Help with Elsie De Wolfe Furniture piece?
details: This was the only information I could find online about a similar item.
An element of classic traditional decors conceived by interior decorators such as Elsie De Wolfe, Sister Parish, Jansen andMario Buatta, red lacquer case pieces--such as this glass-door vitrine set atop a commode with three drawers lined in decorative paper--came into fashion in the eighteenth century. This unique example, signed and dated, was painted in 1951 by James Reynolds (NÉ Harold Warner Reynolds, 1891-1957), an award-winning costume and set designer, book illustrator, author , and wallpaper and textile designer who was born in New York City and died in Bellagio, Italy. His works include murals for the Palladian Ballroom at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., the Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri, Italy's Villa Torrigiani, near Padua, and Manhattan's House of Hellas, the headquarters of the Friends Of Greece. He also painted a portrait of Happy Landings racehorse owned by beer heiress Mrs. August Busch, and designed costumes for the 1921, 1922, and 1923 editions of the Ziegfeld Follies as well as for Jerome Kerns musical "Sunny", Cole Porter's "fifty Million Frenchmen", and Charles Dillingham's production of "The Last of Mrs. Cheney", Reynolds's paintwork on the item offered here reflects a postwar evocation of the European craze for chinoiserie in the 1700s, its coral-red lacquer finish richly embellished monkeys, and Thai-costumed figures building a pair of caparisoned elephants, the howdahs sheltering a mandarin and his wife. The fantastical effect recalls the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I", which had its Broadway premiere the year that Reynolds painted this extravagant furnishing. The presence of shells, both carved and painted, underscores the exotic impression. It is made in two pieces: the electrified vitrine sits atop the commode. Reynolds signed the piece, as well as a matching cocktail table with his initials, J.R., followed by a five-pointed star and the the date. The case piece install, styled after 18th- century Genoese furniture , likely was sourced from Lavezzo, Inc., the Manhattan furniture shop of Reynold's friend Daniel H. Lavezzo (his family long owned the old0guard pub P.J. Clarke's), which was noted for "Period Reproductions". per a 1945 guidebook, and for its Italian-style furnishings, per Reynolds's book "Baroque Splendour" (1950). Lavezzo's firm provided vintage furniture and lighting to Vizcaya, the great Miami mansion of James Deering, and designed a custom-made headboard for actress Marilyn Monroe: John D. Rockefeller was also a client.

2024.05.13 12:23 ZiggyMaster123 Brit Fox - 7 Rings and Short Notice

Brit Fox's organic cover release of Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" has already been streamed over 20,000 times on YouTube, demonstrating her ability to put a unique spin on popular tracks. Her production style often focuses on her "favorite thing" - string instruments, with the violin being the first instrument she learned at the age of five.Capturing the "city Cinderella" part of her upbringing, Brit Fox has drawn inspiration from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" to infuse her productions with a lighter, more playful energy. The much-anticipated "Mazuma" is set to release soon, with a recorded 100 pre-saves already, and will be featured at the Cannes Film Festival before coming to a studio near you.Brit Fox is a talented musician with a unique sound that blends electronic, hip-hop, and alternative rock. Her ability to create intricate rhythms and atmospheric vibes is truly impressive and captivating. Brit is also passionate about promoting diversity and inclusivity in the male-dominated music industry. Her mission to put Cleveland's music scene on the map and redefine the boundaries of rock music is very admirable. However, it's important to approach this goal with caution, as disrupting the status quo can lead to backlash and unintended consequences.Brit collaborates with local musicians, giving them a chance to showcase their skills on a global stage. This is not only cool but inspiring too. Her initiative is changing the game and inspiring a new generation of artists and fans who embrace diversity and reject old stereotypes associated with rock music. Brit's efforts to amplify diverse voices and challenge outdated notions within the rock music scene are truly heartening. By uplifting local talent, she's not only providing invaluable exposure but also fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates artistic expression in all its forms.Brit is rapidly gaining popularity as a rising star in the entertainment industry and has been making appearances at prestigious events such as Cannes, which has been creating a lot of buzz. However, it is important to approach this hype with caution, as the entertainment industry can be unpredictable. While Brit's talent and impact are undeniable, it is wise to avoid getting carried away with the hype and take a level-headed perspective. The journey to becoming a successful celebrity is often full of challenges and obstacles.

2024.04.08 17:16 BeardedBard83 Ken Watanabe - The Mandarin

Ken Watanabe - The Mandarin
Love Ben Kingsley in pretty much any other role he’s done, but he was not the Mandarin. Horrible casting, as is most of the MCU. He spent pretty much that whole film chewing the scenery, as does most of the MCU. He looked more like a guy that wants to wash my car windshield for some spare coin.
If you haven’t already surmised, I hate the Marvel films. Like, vehemently hate. But I find a certain enjoyment in finding actors that resemble characters

2024.02.25 07:21 ChloeforytheW I don’t know what to do

My family owns a few houses, but we only live in one in Texas and one in Louisiana.
The LA house has burned down. It is in a remote location, and the fire department would take a while to get there. It’s not even there yet, my house is gone.
I live in Texas, but I grew up in the Louisiana house.
It’s all gone.
My the 3 people at that house are my brother and father and my brothers girlfriend, but they are all okay.
I had so much stuff there. My Kinect bar for my Xbox, a lot of my Xbox games, my revolver, and also my and my brothers baby books.
I have had a few pets. A Pomeranian-chihuahua mix named Luxe, a big dog (she’s a mix idk what) named Lola, and my baby kitty. Luxe died a while ago, Lola is with me in Texas.
Baby kitty died, and my aunt sissy (she is a cat, my grandmas last). It’s all gone, my friends from there (and here) are asleep and I have nobody to talk to.
My mom is currently preparing to go to Louisiana because my dad and brother left their car keys inside (my brother is dumb so that’s why) and nobody is responding to my texts.
I think god is punishing me because I’ve been so mean to them. Last week I had a chance to go visit and I begged not to go, now everything gone.
My brother had many friends that he could only talk to on his PlayStation, but I think he has their discord too. I asked him via text if he wants my Xbox to still play with his friends, but he hasn’t responded. Probably not focused on that right now, but we don’t have much money right now so I don’t think we could buy him a new one.
I’m gonna have to get new ids too because ALL of my identification is over there so I could lowkey commit a crime rn because legally I don’t exist.
Just venting, but it’s actually really bad. I hope mom brings my brother to Texas and he just goes to school here. I miss him, and his girlfriend had to go back to live with her parents (can’t live with him if they have no house).
Hey, on the vaguely bright side, insurance gonna give us money so maybe momma will let me go to Holmat? Life was just about to get good. Dad was about to get paid, so by extension I was getting paid! I was gonna go CRAZY in hobby lobby! But now, I don’t feel like any of that. I’m just going to watch a bunch of Rodger’s and Hammersteins movies with my little brother.
TL;DR The house I grew up in burned down, and now half of my shit is gone. My cat died, my Kinect bar melted, my games melted, clothes burned, house burned, cats burned, car keys burned (cars did not), dads phones burned, brothers PlayStation burned, all legal identification papers burned, and I legally do not exist as of right now.

2024.02.18 23:28 devoted-to-athena23 I wanna talk about the iconic Deborah Kerr for a moment

I have watched most of Deborah Kerr's total 45 films (although one is just a voice role and the other her scenes were cut so I don't count them). Growing up I loved The King and I - and as much as I love that movie and Deborah Kerr in it, it occured to me I had never seen any of her other movies. So I set out to watch them.
The first thing to note, is that she plays repression so well - out of every kind of emotion, it is this one that makes her so captivating to watch...in fact, she is the master of subtle repression. You see it done the best in Black Narcissus. She manages to convey an arrangement of emotions the viewer can pick up on - all in the most infinitesimally small glances, smirks and vocal quirks. She plays this subtle repression throughout her film career, from the vulnerable forbidden subtleties of Black Narcissus, The Innocents and Heaven Knows, Mr Allison to the more obvious Tea and Sympathy and The Grass is Greener. Especially when this form of repression is of a sexual nature, Kerr blesses it with grace, class and with all the unique accesibility of a close friend confiding their innermost secrets. It is never vulgar in her expert hands, but incredibly raw, human, and identifiable. Even the movies in which she plays an adulteress can draw sympathy from the viewer - she really makes you believe fate is out of her hands and she has no choice but to love a man who isnt her husband - and she plays it with so much pathos you almost feel sorry for her and not the other man!
She is also an extremely underrated comedic actress - the way she delivers her lines in the first half of 'The Night of the Iguana' makes you truly believe in the slight kookiness and ethereal nature of the artist character. And yet when she delivers her moving soliloquy in the final act, she completely grounds the viewer in a sentimentality and vulnerability so touching it can reduce you to tears. Her emotional breakdown at the end of Bonjour Tristesse is only a minute or so, but really gets in your bones...and when you realise what happens at the end of the movie, it feels soul-crushing.
The witty and often biting English humour she delivers in these other light comedies also come from within so naturally, and a few scenes still replay in my head hours and days after having watched them. Her inner monologues in I See A Dark Stranger are brilliantly devised and her back-and-forth with Robert Donat in Perfect Strangers is sharp, quick and real.
When I've watched these films it feels shocking to me - if not downright crazy - that this is the same actress who plays Anna in The King and I. Maybe its the musical element that makes it so different, but from movie to movie she shapeshifts so brilliantly I can't quite believe they're the same actor. For the first time, I watched From Here to Eternity, a classic in its own right. Of course, I'd seen the famous beach scene before...but I had no idea it was Deborah Kerr romping on the beach with Burt Lancaster! Deborah Kerr, the Anna Leonowens from my childhood, how was she also this audacious and complicated character in From Here to Eternity? How did I not recognise her from so many screenings of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical? It wasn't just the bleached blonde hair...it was Kerr's chameleon acting that shocked me.
From early on, she did many, many war films...all of which she improved with her presence - whether it was playing the shy, young girl or the confident, mature lady - together with a pretty impressive range of accents. From there she has been a nun at least twice, a governess at least thrice, and worked incredibly well with David Niven five times. As much as her comedic chops are underrated, her romantic lead is convincing, and her dramatic war-film conviction is arresting, its the horror genre I wish she had worked in more - The Innocents is perhaps her best, and in my opinion, one of the best showcases of acting I have ever seen. The tension, suspense and facial reactions make this movie what it is, combined with the incredible cinematography. Black Narcissus also gives you that horror-like thrill at the end, and is just as psychotically seductive. Other shoutouts go to The Naked Edge, in which Kerr plays the wife of a man she starts to suspect is a murderer. Her portrayal is fantastic - and the way she builds upon her fear, suspicion, and hesitation from act to act really touches you. She fully pulls you along and immerses you into the complex feelings of loving a man you start to fear, and as a viewer I couldn't tear my eyes away. The other is Eye of the Devil, a movie that some might say is a waste of an hour and a half...but as a lover of all things slightly dark, twisty, weird and kitsch, I found it to be an intriguing little cult film with some great cinematography and atmosphere. Deborah Kerr shines once again under the pressure, fear and anxiety...her wide eyes and physical expression are just so extraordinary. I especially love the way she acts out an argument or dispute - in this film and particularly when butting heads with Yul Brynner in The King and I and The Journey. She dishes it out with incredible conviction, believability and heartbreak all in one. The same with The Sundowners - I have to admit its also become quite a favourite - again another example of how well she adapts and adjusts to completely different roles. She spars with Robert Mitchum and doles out affection sometimes in the very same moments...it's a great film and a refreshing insight into the different kinds of characters she plays throughout her career. And one cannot talk of Deborah Kerr's career or her distinct character portrayals without mentioning The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - giving the viewer access to three different personalities over three hours and never faltering.
I could go on and analyse each and every movie she's been in without stopping, but for now I just wanted to give my opinion on one of the best loved actreses of the 20th century - she is still, in my view, criminally underrated and incredibly overlooked - and any virgins to her film career should encourage themselves to watch a movie or two...you won't be disappointed.

2024.02.15 17:30 Vegetable_Comfort366 Cinderella-inspired S4 titles

Now that we have the S3 titles and all but confirmed that Ben and Sophie are our S4 couple, something came to me while I was sleeping last night. While not many people are fans of the Cinderella trope (even though it only applies to the first half), this would be a good opportunity to give homage to various Cinderella adaptations with their episode titles. Here’s what came up with per episode.
  1. Million To One
Based from: Cinderella (aka the Camila Cabello version). It was one of the songs from the movie. Just using the title because I couldn’t care less about the actual song.
For both of them, it’s a million to one chance they’ll see each other again. Scene used for: Cavender’s party to the ride to My Cottage
  1. Loneliness Of Evening
Based from: Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (the Broadway musical version + 1965 version). It was one of the songs from the movie and musical. It wasn’t used for the 1957 or 1997 versions. But it hints all of that foreshadowing.
Both shared episodes of loneliness in their lives. It’s also a nice tribute to Julie Andrews, who played Cinderella in the original 1957 version. Scene used for: flashbacks from the ball, flashbacks from Sophie’s past, Ben’s fever
  1. Utopia
Based from: Ever After (aka the Drew Barrymore version, aka the best Cinderella movie). It’s a reference to the book Danielle’s father gave her before he died and what she and Prince Henry chat about.
My Cottage moments as both begin to heal in many ways Scene used for: My Cottage time to the Lake
  1. An Offer From A Gentleman
Based from: DUH! The actual source material
Unlike the first three seasons where the couple actually gets together, they do… and don’t. Scene used for: THAT DARN OFFER to arriving at Number 5/Bridgerton House
—————
  1. Courageous and Kindness
Based from: Cinderella (aka the Lily James version, aka the other best Cinderella movie). It’s from Ella’s mom final advice before she died: “have courage and be kind.”
Violet and the remaining Bridgertons show her kindness and treated her more like a houseguest than an employee. Scene used for: London to seeing Araminta/the Cowpers nearby
  1. Sing Sweet Nightingale
Based from: Cinderella (aka the 1950 animated one). It’s the song Cinderella was singing while moping the flooDrizella rehearsing at the same time.
Things happening at Ben’s place (if he gets his own place by then) or room. But to reference to Romeo & Juliet, reality sets in when the lark sing its song at dawn. Scene used for: the couch 🌶️ and its fallout
  1. The Long Drought
Based from: A Cinderella Story (aka the Hillary Duff version, aka the only ACS movie that matters). It’s from the line Sam gives to Austin: “waiting for you is like waiting for rain in this drought: useless and disappointing.”
Droughts are broken. Ben finds his “LIS”. Araminta finds her “thief”. Sophie finds her inner voice to walk away. Scene used for: the reveal to arrest
  1. I Can’t Forget The Melody
Based from: The Slipper and the Rose (aka the most underrated adaptation of Cinderella ever, aka Jess and Shonda should take some inspiration from this movie). Cinderella sings this in exile after the Court told her she and the Prince can’t marry and sent her away.
The ultimate climax but personally I hope Sophie does the saving. Sorry Violet, even though you’re the MVP in the book) Scene used for: the ending in all of its glory!
Sorry that it’s long but thoughts? Other suggestions?

2024.02.01 16:27 90Dfanatic My thoughts on 5(ish) fairy tale musicals – what are yours?

After seeing Once Upon a Mattress last night, I realized I’ve now seen 5 fairy tale shows over the last 3 years – two revivals (Mattress/Into the Woods) and three new shows (Bad Cinderella, Once Upon a One More Time, and &Juliet has a very similar premise). Thought I’d rank them and share some thoughts, so here we go from worst to best (and apologies in advance for rambling on):
  1. Bad Cinderella: Just weak. The story makes no sense, the characters are unlikeable, the most hummable song is based on the Rogers & Hammerstein original and the costumes/choreography are borderline sleazy. Meanwhile, Cinderella still gets a glam makeover and is paired off with a prince at the end (albeit in her original Hot Topic look). The only good thing was the number “I Know You” between the two mothers.
  2. OUAOMT: Although a big step up, the over-complicated story and muddled feminism references (written by a man) don't really work. Lots of fun Britney numbers and Justin Guarini is a real highlight, but as with many jukebox musicals a number of songs seem wedged in. The choreography is also mixed, with emoji hands being used so much that at one point I thought I was watching a special ASL performance.
  3. Mattress: A wonderful production of a show that knows what it is – a breezy entertainment. Mattress is a true accomplishment given that it was written in 3 weeks for the available cast at a summer resort camp. It’s got a few lovely, lyrical songs that have become standards and lots of slapstick Sutton Foster really sells, but the second act does drag. It makes you wonder what Mary Rodgers could have done with more luck on the business side – she worked on so many shows that never saw the light of day.
  4. &Juliet: Although I didn’t love &Juliet, I had to admit it was well done. Another overcomplicated plot, but there was some real emotion in Anne and Will’s relationship that was lacking in most of the others. The team had more songs to choose from and did a much better job fitting them into the story, the choreography was a standout and the show was entertaining throughout.
  5. Into the Woods: After seeing all these shows, it’s clear that Sondheim is playing 3-dimensional chess while everyone else is stuck on some form of checkers. From the same starting point, he’s created an incredibly nuanced meditation on raising children and what it means to grow up. His lovely score is an inventive marvel, repeatedly using the same musical motifs to underscore characters’ thinking. And the show is also very entertaining and funny – truly the work of a master.
Some common themes throughout include Cinderella (featured in 3 shows), conceited princes/knights (in all shows, and I saw Cheyenne Jackson in two of them!), LGBTQ/non-binary couples in all the new shows and refusing to pair off the heroine in the end (in 3 shows). But honestly, the most radical feminist take I saw was the refusal to glam up Princess Fred in Mattress – Sutton dominates the stage for two hours without a high heel or pushup bra in sight ;-). Thanks to everyone who makes it this far and I’d love to hear your take on these shows!

2024.01.30 20:00 Relevant-Tap-6248 Pat mcafee

Are the people that complain about him having success on the network purposely obtuse? I get Aaron Rodgers is polarizing and pat milked that partnership for far too long but he’s the least interesting routine interview. Weekly conversation with Nick Saban? Jj watt? Pat did a 40 minute interview with Tom Brady today. These guys have interviewed shaq phil mickleson Barry sanders just random legends on an almost daily basis. Current coaches/coordinators like Arthur smith ex coaches like Chuck pagano on every week. No other nfl themed show on a network has the unfiltered insight that the mcafee show offers. The only other personality on pat’s level that can get a list interviews from people in the sports world whether active or alumni is rich eisen, that’s it.
ESPN for all the gimmicks they’ve failed at of late and as bad as some of the shows have been over the past decade with the subject matter being regurgitated show to show for 8+ hours a day which were criticisms by many; I don’t see how these same critics bash the Pat mcafee show? With ratings going down and how popular athlete led podcasts have become and with pats charisma on the mic and experiences and connections— any idiot can see why Bob iger made the deal. Stephen a will not be espns leading man for long. Go watch pats monologue from the espys last year, case in point why espn threw a truckload of cash at him and axed a lot of on air talent. It’s why college game day brought him on it’s why wwe made him a commentator like him or not dude is obviously a talent at being a personality. If the network is smart they give him whatever he wants because he’s one of the few names in sports media who could go make their own network and become a juggernaut much like bill Simmons created the ringer when espn axed him.

2024.01.13 12:22 JulieSongwriter Good day, Ladies: #50B

Happy Saturday, Ladies! And a happy start to the MLK Jr Weekend.
I can't believe how the Park is hopping. People just pop out from their cars, pile into their RVs, and enjoy the weekend. Part of their deal with us is that the day before we raise the thermostat or fire up whatever so they move into a relatively warm space. We have activities planned to help everyone leave on Monday completely refreshed.
Let's conclude Part 5, "The Mystic Law Is the Unsurpassed Treasure Possessed by All," of Ikeda Sensei's lecture on "The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings." We are currently studying the "Belief and Understanding" chapter of the Lotus Sutra. Today we complete the final section, "Dialogue That Brings Hope and Courage" (link).
Ikeda Sensei concludes the section with:
Let’s take pride in our philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism, a “cluster of unsurpassed jewels,” and dance together confidently with the joy of gaining a supreme treasure unsought!
Ladies, isn't this the perfect quote to launch MLK Day Weekend? "Pride in our philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism," appreciating our “cluster of unsurpassed jewels,” "dancing together confidently," and "the joy of gaining a supreme treasure unsought." Let's celebrate and dance this holiday weekend!
True and the Queen Bees and Chariteers have transformed the weekend into a week-long experience! They tell us they are up in Seneca Falls NY now exploring The Womens Rights National Historical Park. Next they are off to Auburn NY to visit the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park. Then they will be taking the long drive to Florence MA to learn about Sojourner Truth. Thanks, True, for providing us with the links!
And to Muma and Lita, you are full of Dr. King's spirit as you travel around Maine living and spreading Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific message of tolerance!
Of course, for Dee and me, the MLK Weekend is the time to "dance together confidently." We mark this weekend as our Fam Anniversary and "the joy of gaining a supreme treasure unsought."
Let's keep the chat going over the weekend, Ladies! Don't forget to share any stories about planting 2024 seeds!
Love, Julie
TAG: I adapted this post from Part V in the January 2024 Living Buddhism portion of Ikeda Sensei's lecture "Key Passages From The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings." To make it easier to read, I've edited out brackets and I have done some minor paraphrases of quotations. I've also left out sources and footnotes. If you are curious about them, please refer to the original article.

2024.01.12 05:42 JamaicanTransplant And why did Benjamin ask us to pack swimsuits and bring them today?

Muma and I got up early to do a whisper quiet gongyo and chant a lot of daimoku. Today has to be successful! The company of two casts needs to unite. We need to do our best. We need to communicate the heart of Rodgers & Hammerstein. Let me and Caressa become the best of friends. Let our two families get close. Overcome differences of race, politics, and geography? Fuck! That's too much to chant for! So I'm just chanting that I can make everyone around me feel upbeat and hopeful.
About a dozen company members showed up for the 5K run/walk. The weather was cloudy and windy but no rain. The custodian opened the track for us. My mantra: "Let's warm up. No injuries. Take it slow, if you don't have running experience." I and a couple of others did 8 laps. The Phys Ed Dept let us take showers so we began the rehearsals without stinking.
I am seeing that a part of Benjamin's directing strategy is tightening, loosening, like kneading dough. The morning was tightening time. Cast B did a complete run through. Benjamin said their performance was "credible". I think it was outstanding.
Tonight is the dress rehearsal, done by Cast A. I wasn't surprised when Benjamin did his loosening up cycle in the afternoon. He got us into one of those yellow cheese buses and we traveled around the besutiful sights of this part of Maine. We got out to take pictures of the beautiful scenery as well as with each other. It was such a wonderful bonding experience.
One of the districts that is supporting our company has a to-die-for olympic-sized swimming pool. At the end of the tour the school bus stopped at the school. The swim coach met us and led us in a game of water volleyball. We had so much fun!
Back to our main school. Hair, costumes, makeup. The orchestra was ready and warmed up. Cast A did our version of South Pacific. This time we had an audience of Middle School students from around the district. It was our best performance yet.
After the show, Benjamin gave a critique. But I could see that he was in the loosening cycle and his main goal was giving both casts more confidence. Then he shifted to the tightening cycle. He told us that for tomorrow night's performance, he plans on mixing up both casts. Here is the building up of tension again. He said we won't know who plays what until it's time to get into costumes! Fuck your games, Benjamin! I just know we will do fine.
He wanted us to have a good night rest and asked us to head straight for home. Caressa's dad had prepared barbecue for us. Wow!
I knew it was going to come up and it did. Blue and Red, Biden and Trump. The culprit was Caressa's BF. Nope, I'm not going down that rabbit hole. Not going to damage all the work we've done so far. Nope.
Muma just piped up. "You all want to hear Lita's impression of Joe Biden?" Nobody was going to turn that one down. I had everyone laughing. "Can you do President Trump?" Yes, I can, yes I did. "Nancy Pelosi?" Yup. Caressa asked me to do Benjamin. Yup. "Bernie Sanders?" Yup. "Janet Mills?" Who's Janet Mills?
Laughing together is better than fighting together. We went to bed happy.
Caressa and I have gotten very close. We both shared personal things with each other. She knows I keep an online journal here. She crafted a message that I could use here. "In real life, I am Nellie Forbush. A cockeyed-optimist on the surface, but there is a real storm brewing underneath."
Tonight she asked me to explain some of the differences between Buddhism and Christianity. Very good question and I tried my best, not sure whether or not I did a good job. I asked her to tell me some of the things she likes most about her church and she did.
Just read Lita's post. Wow!

2024.01.11 05:27 JamaicanTransplant Running and run-throughs

About a dozen cast members showed up for the 5K run/walk. We said yes but the weather said no. The custodian opened the gym for us. "Let's warm up. No injuries. Take it slow, if you don't have running experience." We just did a lot of laps. I have no idea how far we ran. The Phys Ed Dept let us take showers so we began the rehearsals without stinking.
The stage crew needed a lot of work to practice setting up scenery, changing scenes, breaking them down, and following lighting cues. So the actors worked in classrooms.
Benjamin called a cast meeting at some point. He asked the same question as in the bus: "What is the meaning of Bali Ha'i in the play? What does Bali Ha'i mean in your own lives?" Nice answers. "But I don't feel authenticity," he said. The room became tense.
So he dug deeper. "Let's talk about You've Got Be Carefully Taught. Again, the conversation was sweet but not authentic. "What do you think about our casting of a black Nellie?" No problems. "Did the Nellie-Emile kiss work?" Yes, it did, good chemistry. "Why was Emile able to transcend racism?" He was French, maybe not the same type of racism. "Well, why was our black Nellie so able to kiss Emile while at the same time she found his two mixed-race kids so upsetting?"
Bingo. No one could respond. Speechless. I knew it was coming, and it did. "Lita, you and I have talked about this. Can you share what is going on in your mind when you are playing this role?"
I'm an actress, I have to play authenticity even when I'm not feeling authentic. That's what actors do. The Actors Studio here I come.
"I was an emergency replacement and had to learn a very long part very quickly. At first, I didn't have time to think about this question. But little by little I had to deal with it. I believe my identity is me, not a Jamaican American. I'm also a Buddhist and I've studied about the difference between my essential and transient identities."
"So at first, I played Nellie the same way Audra McDonald played Mother Abess in Sound of Music Live! with Carrie Underwood. What? I'm black? Who would ever notice? What difference does that make? By the way, Benjamin and I did some research and found out there were black nuns in Europe at that time."
"I felt sure I could pull off a colorblind Nellie. But as I researched my role I began to see the courage of Rodgers & Hammerstein to raise the issue of racism. Did you know that at the time of this production, interracial marriage was prohibited in California? That black soldiers were not permitted during the War to serve next to white ones? That Georgia tried to ban South Pacific, claiming it was communist, unAmerican, and inspired by Moscow?"
"So I decided I had to go deeper into my character's subtext. Why was she so abhorred by Emile's young innocent kids? Because they are part-Asian? Whether you know it or not, there is racism within the black community. The racism is directed against Jews, Asians, Latinos...and other black populations. For example, people out of Africa and the Caribbean tend to look down on African Americans. It's a big dirty secret. Not all people, or even most, but it's there. Now you know."
"So I decided I had to be more courageous than I ever had to be in my life. Why did Nelly react this way to the children? Right now I am combining two hypotheses. One: she's really discovering the racism in her own heart which meant looking down on Asians. Two: up until now my relationship with Emile was fantasy. And in seeing the children she pictured herself as the mother of her own future interracial kids and this threatened her to the core. I decided I had to overplay the scenes with the children."
I think Benjamin does these things on purpose. Just as we getting from meh to authentic, he said we had run out of time and the PTA had prepared a beautiful lunch for us. But everybody was stung. Especially me. I had never spoken about race so personally. I see myself somehow as an ambassador to the dominant culture. At that moment, I determined to play Nellie with every fiber of my being.
Two partial run-throughs after lunch. Act One for Cast A, Act Two for Cast B. There comes a time in productions, I have learned, when the director steps backward and hands everything over to the stage manager. Quark ran the run-throughs. He's a hard ass with his fucking microphone. "Cut! Look at the audience!" "Cut! Double your voice production!" "Cut! Look at the audience!" "Cut! Double your intensity!" "Cut! You have to act even when you're not acting!" "Cut! Look at the audience!" "Cut! Double your voice production!" No one will ever forget these instructions again.
In the late afternoon, the orchestra showed up. Fifteen pieces which is a real luxury these days, I learned. Now we had to learn to follow the conductor. Not easy at all! When we think of a Broadway band, we always think about the songs. But that is only 50%. We practiced the segues, getting ready before the curtain rises, the all-important Curtain Call, how to step out of character and handle applause after numbers, reading the audience and how to respond to calls for an encore, etc.
We broke very late. By the time Caressa and I got home, the Jamaican dinner and burps were long finished. They saved some food for us, of course, but we were really tired and went to bed soon after a few bites. Lights out but we were still giggling and gossiping about the day.

2024.01.08 06:23 JamaicanTransplant I get some tough love

12:30 Lunch in New Haven, a pizerria called Pepe's. I was told this was a famous place. "Try out the seafood pizza, Lita!" Mi have inner luv for Pepe now!
1:30 Company meeting in the bus. We passed the microphone from person to person and shared our impressions of Friday, both of the production and our work with the students. Everyone thought the high school students and teachers were incredible and very well-prepared. The concept is working. Benjamin moved our performance from "credible" to "highkey." Huge upgrade.
Then Benjamin became master teacher. He said that as actors we should try to understand what was happening inside the minds of the writers and the times as well as the subtext of our characters. "We will talk about World War II another day. But now, let's look at Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein." He asked us to open our phones to the Wikipedia article on Oklahoma! and follow along.
"R&H were no strangers to struggles. Hammerstein had produced six flops before Oklahoma! and Rodgers saw his partnership with the lyricist Lorenzo Hart dissolve because of Hart's alcoholism. Both R&H were also artistically frustrated by the conventions of musical theater in those days."
"They wanted to continue to develop the idea of what's called a book musical. Musicals at that time were more like song-and-dance reviews tied together by a thin plot. R&H wanted to explore operatic ideals of a dramatic story full of emotions. The music and dance would feed the plot line instead of the other way around. The show incorporated a 15 minute ballet which was a unique idea at the time. In their creative process, lyrics came first, then music. Words really counted! No stars were hired for the main roles. In casting they looked for singers who could act, rather than actors who could sing."
Benjamin said directly to me: "You need to train your voice more, Lita, and not rely so much on your acting." Ouch, that hurt! "Julie Andrews began singing when she was 12 years old, in a bomb shelter no less. She was hired for the role of Eliza Doolittle when she was 19 and began performing My Fair Lady! when she was 20. Can you imagine that? You have to wake up and take your talents more seriously! Don't waste a second!" Public humiliation. "Julian, can you make time during the tour to work with Lita one-on-one? Work her hard and don't pamper her." Gulp! I just show-kissed him and now he's my teacher? "Muma, you and I seriously need to talk."
From that time, everyone addressed Muma, "Muma." Back to the Wikipedia history lesson.
Producer Mike Todd walked out after the first act during the tryout and wisecracked, "No girls, no gags, no chance."
Hmmm.
Brooks Atkinson wrote in The New York Times that the show's opening number, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" changed the history of musical theater: "After a verse like that, sung to a buoyant melody, the banalities of the old musical stage became intolerable."
The production ran for 2,212 performances, over five years. Unprecedented, a record that held until My Fair Lady.
The show's creativity stimulated Rodgers and Hammerstein's contemporaries and ushered in the "Golden Age" of American musical theatre.
"Then came Carousel, another revolutionary show. We'll talk more about it another time. Next was Allegro into which Oscar Hammerstein poured his heart and soul but is today regarded as a flop. This wounded Oscar to the core. We need to talk more about that another time. But the bounce back was South Pacific. And that's the wave we are surfing."
"I'm going to pass the microphone around now, I want everyone to share your thoughts about the symbolism of 'Bali Ha'i'".
We went on and on. Many times laughing. I can feel us becoming a company now.
5:30 Dinner
6:30 Back to the bus. Schedule for tomorrow.
7:30 Hotel, gongyo, bath, homework. Long talk with Muma, mainly about Benjamin's comments to me. Honey, you have no idea how much I wanted to get up and slap him in the face with my purse. Mom, I'm glad you didn't. I can take it. I'm trying to be a professional comment, not a kid. The truth hurts but the truth can set you free.
We talked like only mothers and daughters can. She cradled me in her arms and brushed my hair. I really needed that. We talked about my fake-marriage and how much I love Heidi. Then we talked about school.
"Muma, I want to change my academic program. I don't want to take the AP classes anymore. I don't see how I can keep up with them with the South Pacific work schedule. I don't want to go to an Ivy college, not at all. I just want a good basic education, get my high school degree, and take it from there. When this job is over, I want to load up on dance, acting, and now singing classes. I want to audition."
Long conversation. We decided to call up the school in the morning and discuss our options. Quick text exchange with Heidi. I told her she'd have to wait to read this post to find out more about my day!
It's too late but I just had to put this all into the record. GN.

2024.01.03 06:03 HeidiInWonderland Sweet Sixteen a minute ago

Mom and Dad both working late. But we decided to celebrate my birthday tomorrow tonight. Why? I need a new phone! That's my Sweet Sixteen birthday present. An iPhone with lots of memory. Blue. No more freezing, missed shots because memory is maxed out, factory resets, or forgotten PWs. No more asking friends to put things up on social media for me because I can't access my accounts. No more emailing myself to keep journaling my day.
Clock struck 12. I'm 16.
Any rate, from earlier today..."Finished My-First-Day-Of-School-Minus-Lita."
Of course I miss Lita at school. But I refuse to stay in that space. What good does it do for me to miss her? What good does it do for her? Periodt.
English class slaps hard. Mr. Litman says in the 3 weeks until the last day of the semester, we are going to learn everything about grammar that we never even suspected existed! I am actually looking forward to this.
My Global teacher slips a Post-It to me: "Paper was good. Real good."
Our Band teacher is absent and the instrument room was locked: The substitute teacher asks class whether anybody wanted to play anything on the piano. "What the fuck, come on!" I thought. I raised my hand. "I want to play Let's Start the New Year Right by Irving Berlin. I go to the piano and accompany myself. Javier picks up the tune on his guitar which gives me the chance to do my flute part. Clap, clap.
Phys Ed, French, Living Environment, Calculus. The day goes by and I make it through. After school some of the girls from the volleyball team check up on me and we hang out.
So I put up quite a good show, don't I? But when I get back home I start tearing. Time to call Julie. She listens very patiently and then sends me a link to Ikeda Sensei's quotes on love and relationships. We go through a few of them:
Happiness in life is not determined by marriage. The secret to happiness lies in building a strong inner self, a self that no trial or hardship can diminish.
Ideal love is fostered only between two sincere, mature and independent people. It is the inner struggle to polish these attributes that is the key. . . . Real love is not two people clinging to each other; it can only be fostered between two strong people secure in their individuality.
If you are neglecting things you should be doing, forgetting your purpose in life because of the relationship you’re in, then you’re on the wrong path. A healthy relationship is one in which two people encourage each other to reach their respective goals while sharing each other’s hopes and dreams. A relationship should be a source of inspiration, invigoration and hope.
This is what I needed to hear and I promise her I will go through the rest. So I put on my jogging shoes and do my 5K run/walk. I come home, shower, do my homework, and practice chords and scales on the piano and guitar. I am going to get my left hand stronger!
Dad and Mom are working late so I ordered some sushi for all of us. Gongyo.
Lita calls after dinner. She held her own in the run through. Completely off book. Her director called her performance "credible" which translates as good enough and a high compliment for a last minute hire. Tomorrow is the first rehearsal with scenery and props. Thursday add costumes. Friday is dress rehearsal. Saturday is off. Sunday they leave for the first residency.
But the real surprise for her was the cast meeting after the rehearsal. The director talked about the criticisms of South Pacific over the years and the psychological space that Rodgers and Hammerstein were in at that time. He also talked about the mood and backdrop of the country. Lita said the discussion was very disturbing to everyone but they had to leave the studio for the next group. They will pick up the conversation tomorrow.
She hopes to make our session with Susan tomorrow but is not certain.
