You could be swingin' on a star A House Divided Alternate Elections
The anti-Pact picture \"Casablanca\" helped to create public sympathy for the Grand Alliance and promoted war bonds through various scenes
Even though the American public voted for an interparty coalition of politicians who supported intervention in varying degrees (along with a noticeable minority of voters who opposed any and all intervention) and behind the scenes the federal government has been silently working for years to intervene in Europe and the Far East, the vast majority of the American public did not at all expect the outright declaration of war on Japan the 76th Congress managed to produce. As a result, there was opposition from the start to the war effort through strikes despite the partial success of President Hayes in preventing the miners' strike. Although the brutality and scale of the attack on San Diego succeeded in temporarily uniting the American people (indeed, along with most of the American continents joining to the Grand Alliance), the divisive elections of 1940 along with the stubborn opposition of the SWP to President Hughes in the constitutional crisis of 1941 led to fear among most Americans of defeat on the battlefield and civil war at home. Together with the speed of President Hughes' handling of the crisis (by ordering the return of all forces from North Africa to deal with the escalating domestic insurgency), Hollywood entered the picture.
The basis for the creation of the cinema was a variety of new technologies and inventions mainly through the ability to photograph and record images and sound. In the United States, in 1893, the inventor Thomas Edison together with his assistant William Kennedy Dixon introduced the kinetoscope; A device through which films could be watched by inserting a coin and the viewing was done using a "peek box" - a rectangular box that contained the projection mechanism, when the viewer saw the film through a glass lens at the top of the device. Edison's shady conduct in his business and legal issues will also be the motive for the migration of those involved in the fields of cinema from the New York state to the Los Angeles area, and for the establishment of Hollywood (along with a favorable weather for shooting outdoor scenes most of the year).
During humble beginnings of the Post-Grant's New America when the film industry was still in its infancy, many immigrants, mainly Jews, found employment field as a result of not being accepted in other more established industries in the competition for the job market and therefore even though the pioneers of American cinema such as D.W. Griffith were American directors who for the most part represented a sentimental southern and traditional Grantist world view there were already those who opposed Integralist concepts like Charlie Chaplin. After the Great War, various filmmakers and actors such as Marlene Dietrich immigrated from Europe. They joined a long line of film actors born in the United States, most of whom flocked to Southern California from Western New York after the first talking motion pictures were shown there as the new industry slowly but gradually took on an image of glamor and investments from various tycoons.
A typical motion projector during the \"classic Hollywood\" era
In the period called the "classic era of Hollywood" or the "golden age" from approximately right before the start of the 1930s all the way to the start of America's involvement in World War II, different high-budget studios already competed in films with complex and long plots and produced westerns, "film noir" films, musicals, animated cartoons and biographical films. At that time, thousands of people were employed by the film studios - actors, producers, directors, writers, stuntmen, and technicians. The movie studios owned hundreds of movie theaters in different cities across the United States where their realized products were shown to the public, who was eager to pay the entrance fee. Thus by the beginning of the fifth decade of the 20th century, Americans had long since become accustomed to the culture of viewing news broadcasts about the state of the world through screenings at the local cinema before the start of the motion picture for which they had come for their leisure.
As soon as the Japanese bombing of California began, it seemed that the industry would collapse or at the very least shut down for a long period of time until it could be rebuilt in New York. However, President Hughes understood its potential and insisted that filming continue despite the situation in the state. He ensured that funds and federal technical equipment poured in (both directly and indirectly) with direct instructions for directors to begin the production of propaganda films to mobilize public opinion in support of the war. Nevertheless, prestigious film premieres were indeed often canceled, even though these films that were shot in California got distributed with haste all across America.
Therefore, Hollywood underwent another transformation and a new variety of films were created which hinted (and some of them did not hint at all but were in fact a blatant propaganda product) the importance of the fight against the Pact.
The history of collaboration between the US military and Hollywood was long-standing at this point. The first collaboration between the Army and Hollywood took place in 1923 in the Mitchel era (that was also a certain indirect tribute to the former president who was fond of the world of aeronautics) with the production of the film "Wings" that aimed to encourage recruitment to the Army Air Corp. The film, which was shot on a huge budget for its time dealt with a triangle involving two pilots and the girl they are in love with - a combination of the romantic and heroic genres without any criticism of the military and its actions. However, it paled in comparison to World War II and the sense of "what is at stake" by both the federal government and Hollywood. This period brought the cooperation to a new level. The military recruited Hollywood stars such as William Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, and Henry Fonda, and used them in propaganda films for the US military and the war effort. For this purpose, some of the most important Hollywood directors were also recruited - John Ford, Howard Hawks and Frank Capra. Capra particularly excelled: Between the years 1942 to 1946 he directed a series of eight propaganda masterstrokes called "Why We Fight" in which each episode presented in length the audience a different enemy combatant nation of America while actors went on tours of different fronts around the world to boost morale and present their film works to the soldiers.
With the end of the war, Hollywood tried to adapt to a brave new world, but the cessation of the flow of funds and equipment was something it was not ready for. Combined with the beginning of the television era, Hollywood had to reduce the number of its film production, although quite soon in the strong post war economy, tycoons even allowed directors to increase their quality of film production. As a result of the changes, the studios began to focus mainly on the production of entertainment content that the television medium could not provide to viewers – an even bigger and more spectacular show for the eyes. Although television broke the hegemony that the American film industry had in the American entertainment industry, as a result of the direct competition there were many changes that benefited the film industry. That was due to public opinion beginning to see cinema as a more serious artistic medium worthy of respect compared to home Television.

2024.05.15 00:55 Tuckychick Fully confused on what bird I just saw!

For context, I live in the Louisville area of Kentucky in an area surrounded by fields, small lakes and trees. I was walking tonight and spotted a medium sized (think Cooper’s hawk sized) bird swooping after another bird and then flying around the corner of a house. By the time I got to where it was it was nowhere in sight. The bird was fully white on the back with tan coloring in the wings. It soared to have a darker underbelly but I didn’t spot much of that. I have searched and can find nothing resembling what I saw. Does anyone have any ideas?

'Jonathan Bailey doesn’t like to bare it all. But vulnerability fueled his best performance yet' - Jonny interview with the LA Times

“This is where all the cruising happened.”
Jonathan Bailey and I are standing in Pershing Square on a bright, blustery spring afternoon, nearing the end of a homemade queer history tour of downtown L.A.: One Magazine, Cooper Do-Nuts/Nancy Valverde Square, the Dover bathhouse, the Biltmore Hotel and this, the city’s former Central Park, a haven, since before World War I, for “fairies” and “sissy boys,” servicemen on leave and beatniks on the road.
“Is it still happening now?” he asks.
“Probably not as much,” I venture.
“Well, you let me know if it’s happening,” he teases, a mischievous smile lighting up his face.
Bailey understands the uses of the charm offensive. As Sam, the handsome Lothario of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s delightful pre-”Fleabag” curio, “Crashing”; Anthony, the romantic hero of “Bridgerton’s” second season; and John, the jerk of a protagonist in Mike Bartlett’s love triangle play “Cock,” the English actor, 36, has swaggered up to the precipice of superstardom. With roles in such studio tentpoles as “Wicked” and “Jurassic World” on the horizon, he may just break through. Yet he delivers career-best work in Showtime’s queer melodrama “Fellow Travelers,” as anti-Communist crusader-turned-gay rights activist Tim Laughlin, by leaving behind the self-assured rakes and tapping a new wellspring: soft power.
Tim may be, as Bailey puts it, “an open nerve,” but as it turns out, the devout Catholic and political naïf — who falls for suave State Department operative Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller (Matt Bomer) just as Sen. Joseph McCarthy tries to purge the federal government of LGBTQ people — is formidable indeed.
Stretching from the Lavender Scare to the depths of the AIDS crisis, in scenes of tenderness, cruelty and toe-curling sex, Bailey’s performance communicates that little-spoken truth of relationships: It takes more strength to submit than it does to control. The former demands discipline, courage, trust; the latter requires only force.
“In ‘Bridgerton,’ [Bailey] is like a Hawkins Fuller character — he is very sexy and has lots of power, has that kind of confident charisma that absolutely is not Tim at all,” says “Fellow Travelers” creator Ron Nyswaner.
But any doubt about Bailey’s ability to mesh with Bomer, who boarded the project early in development, was put to bed with the actors’ virtual rehearsal of a meeting on a park bench in the pilot. “‘Well, that’s a first,’” Nyswaner recalls an executive texting him. “I cried in a chemistry read.”
‘Am I inviting people in?’
Bailey grew up in a musical family in the Oxfordshire countryside outside London, and this, coupled with an appreciation for the morning prayers, choir practice and Mass he attended as a scholarship student at the local Catholic school, fed his precocious talents. (“I loved the performance of it,” he laughs. “Not to diminish the celebration of religious process, but I did love the idea of wearing a gown.”) By age 10, he’d appeared in the West End, playing Gavroche in a production of “Les Misérables,” an experience he now recognizes as an encounter with a queer found family — albeit one shadowed by the toll of the AIDS crisis, which peaked in the U.K. in the mid-1990s.
“When I’m asked about my childhood, there’s so much I don’t remember, and I think that’s true of anyone who’s been in fight or flight for 20 years,” he says. “I would have been in a cast of people whose friends would have died in the last seven years. I think of where I was seven years ago. I had all my gay friends then. It’s only retrospectively that I can retrofit a real gay community around me [in the theater], that I just wasn’t aware of [then].”
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, American and British culture presented queer adolescents with a bewildering array of mixed signals. As beloved celebrities came out in growing numbers, and the battle for marriage equality became a central locus of LGBTQ political organizing, the media continued to propagate harmful stereotypes of gay men as miserable, lonely, perverted or worse — and, Bailey remembers, callously turned George Michael, arrested on suspicion of cruising in a Beverly Hills restroom in 1998, and Irish pop star Stephen Gately, who revealed his sexuality in 1999, fearful he was about to be outed, into tabloid spectacles.
No wonder Bailey, like many LGBTQ people of his generation, should feel the “chemical” thrill of “validation and acceptance” during London Pride at age 18, then embark on a two-year relationship with a woman in his 20s.
“Dangerously, if you’re not exposed to people who can show you other examples of happiness, you think that’s the easiest way to live,” Bailey says. “It’s funny. You look back and you can tell the story in one way, which is that I always knew who I was and my sexuality and my identity within that. But obviously at times, it was really tough. I compromised my own happiness, for sure. And compromised other people’s happiness.”
https://preview.redd.it/9q0vkj3djd0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c631452122b5fb2c401e95352dcc0c21d54d0d7
Disclosures about his personal life have become particularly thorny for the actor since the premiere of “Bridgerton,” the blockbuster bodice-ripper from executive producer Shonda Rhimes.
“The Netflix effect does knock you off center completely,” he says, recalling the experience of finding a paparazzo waiting outside his new flat before he’d even moved in. “Suddenly, you do start having nightmares about people climbing in your windows... Even now, talking about it makes me feel like, ‘Am I inviting people in?’”
He is also critical of the media for churning out headlines about the smallest details of celebrities’ private lives, often detached from their original context. In an interview with the London Evening Standard published in December, Bailey described a harrowing encounter in a Washington, D.C., coffee shop in which a man threatened his life for being queer — and, in recounting the experience, offhandedly mentioned the “lovely man” he’d called, shaken, after it happened. Although Bailey acknowledges that the original story handled the subject with aplomb, he felt dismayed that more attention wasn’t paid to the intended warning about rising anti-LGBTQ sentiment: “The only thing that got syndicated from that story was that I had a boyfriend, and it wasn’t true,” he sighs. “It was kind of depressing, if I’m honest.”
Still, Bailey, who once turned down a role in a queer-themed TV series because it would have required him to speed along revelations about his personal life he wasn’t ready to make, is prepared to embrace the power of vulnerability when it feeds the work. Although a member of his inner circle expressed doubts about “Fellow Travelers’” steamy sex scenes, for instance, the actor intuited that they were what made the project worth doing: “I was like, ‘I’m telling you, they are the reason why this is going to be brilliant.’”
‘He’s changed my trajectory in my own life’
To those who would complain about the state of sex in film and TV, “Fellow Travelers” is the perfect riposte. All of it matters, from Tim’s first flirtation with Hawk to the finale’s closing minutes, because the series, at its core, is about the importance of soft power: the strength required to bend, but not break; to adapt, but not abandon oneself; to survive without shrinking to nothing in the process. And depicting that through sex, specifically gay sex, makes “Fellow Travelers” radical indeed.
Bailey understands that baring so much comes with certain risks. When I tell him that research for the story has filled my algorithmic “For You” feed on X (formerly Twitter) with speculation that his onscreen relationship with Bomer has a real-life element, he notes that “shipping” fictional couples and costars alike has long been part of Hollywood fantasy. But he bristles at the implication that he and Bomer are anything but skilled actors at work.
“I would love for people to know that the success of our chemistry isn’t based on us f—. It’s actually about us leaning into the craft,” he says. “It’s a vulnerable situation to be in, talking about it on record. I don’t want to rob people of their thoughts. But I do have a set of values, and as an artist, you don’t need to be f— to tell that love story.”
Underlying that craft, Bailey adds, is the confidence to speak up, as with one scene in “Fellow Travelers” that was adjusted because he said, “I don’t want to be naked today.” He learned to use his voice the hard way: In his early 20s, he recalls, he was once “bullied” on set when “someone was threatened” by him and vowed to himself, “I’m never going to do that to someone. I’m never going to allow that to happen."
https://preview.redd.it/4qwts4jrjd0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b9be4bb693aa886389f599b4e82c0f6a520be45
This impulse to direct his influence in support of others has blossomed further with “Fellow Travelers.” On the day of our interview, Bailey enthuses about an upcoming meeting with legendary gay rights activist Cleve Jones and shares his idea for a docuseries recording the stories of elders in the LGBTQ+ community while they are still here to tell them. He describes lying in a hospital bed on set on World AIDS Day, in character as Tim, surrounded by gay men who had lost friends and lovers during the crisis, and finding himself thinking, “What do I want to leave behind?”
“I think he’s changed my trajectory in my own life,” Bailey says.
This is, perhaps, the most common reaction I know to diving deep into queer history — the understanding that we, like our forerunners, are responsible for shaping the queer future, whether in politics, society or art. No one is going to do it on our behalf.
As we stand on the nondescript corner now named for her, I relate the story of the late queer activist Nancy Valverde, who was arrested repeatedly while a barber school student in the 1950s on suspicion of “masquerading” because of her preference for short hair and men’s clothing, and later successfully challenged her harassment by the police in court.
“What a hero!” Bailey exclaims, wondering at Valverde’s bravery. “The thing that’s so interesting with power battles is, ultimately, identity is the thing that gives you the most strength and power in your life, isn’t it?
“Because that’s one thing people can’t take away from you: who you are and how you express yourself."

[New Update]: My family forgot to invite me to my grandparents funeral, but they are convinced I was there.
Trigger Warnings: death of loved ones, emotional manipulation, gaslighting, harassment
RECAP
Original Post: November 14, 2023**
I’m 30s F and caused a major blowup in my family and now none of them are talking to me. For background, my hometown is tiny (500pop) and when I went 2 hrs away to “the city” (15,000pop) for college, I loved it. I ended up staying after graduation, got married, and am happy here for a decade. I visit my home town every few weeks or so, call/text my family near daily, and thought we were all good. My family’s pretty small. Just my brother, mom, step dad, dad, step mom, and an aunt and uncle (mom’s siblings, never married, no kids). My mother's grandparents moved to my home town when I was in high school and were just down the street from us. My family has always been pretty drama free (aside from my parent’s divorce when I was a kid) and we’ve been happy. The step-parents were blended in perfectly and we share holidays and celebrations together. We’re all super close and just the perfect little group.
Ever since I moved away, the topic of “when am I moving back?” is constant, and I’ve always laughed it off. My home town has nothing. You have to drive 30 minutes for milk and bread. 60-90 minute one-way commutes to work. And floods shut down the main road every Easter. I love the town, but I love here more. I have parks, stores, community events, a library! The “city” is great. My family grumbles that I need to move back, but I refuse. I've been trying to encourage them to come here, especially since it's not an hour drive to the nearest medical facility.
Now to the meat and potatoes: both my grandparents passed over COVID times. They were both old and their health had been failing for a while so it was only a matter of time. Thankfully they didn’t catch it, but it made visiting them impossible and we survived mostly through FaceTime. They both passed in their sleep months apart. Both were cremated and kept securely under the kitchen sink for safe keeping while the pandemic blew over. That was 2021.
Well, I just found out my family held a funeral for them and scattered the ashes in my uncle’s maple grove over the summer. No one said a word to me about it. I’ve visited numerous times before and after and not one word. I only found out because my great uncle from California posted on Facebook a few weeks ago that he is entering hospice and was so thankful his health stayed strong enough for him to see his little sister (my grandma) to her final resting place. I was confused and called my mom. She was all “Yeah, the funeral we had in July, remember?” Ya’ll, I visited them for the 4th of July. They did the funeral the 8th. Not a word about it to me. They had planned this for months. Long enough to arrange for my infirm great uncle to be brought over from the other side of the country. Apparently, they talked about it “all the time”.
Everyone is convinced I was at the funeral. They SWEAR I was there. I can prove I wasn’t because Google’s got my location history. My hubby is baffled because he was supposedly there, too, but he had to work every weekend in June and July. Time clock doesn’t lie. My family straight up forgot about me. I’m hurt. I’m sad. And they’re pissed at me “for lying”. They think I’m causing drama over nothing. Nothing I say can convince them I wasn’t there. My family is united in this. And they’ve all put me “on read” until I admit I’m wrong. They think I’ve gone nuts. Either there’s a doppelganger of me attending events, or my family doesn’t want to admit they screwed up. I’m not backing down.
Thanksgiving is coming up, and my family’s been vague posting on Facebook about “forgetful kids” and mental health. It’s so freaking weird and I don’t know if I’m in bizzaro world or what’s going on. My mom’s best friend reached out and said I should just admit I was wrong and apologize, that I’m causing my mom so much unnecessary stress. I asked her if she’s checked everyone’s home for CO2. She hung up on me. (We checked our CO2, and our testers are running just fine.) I have reached out to a few people in my home town to check in on my folks, and they all say they're fine. I even spoke with the local volunteer fire fighter group to see if they could check for gas leaks. Not sure if they were able to.
I don’t know what to do. I’ve shown them the proof I wasn’t there, but they know I’m tech savvy and just assume I’ve Photoshopped it. Hubby says we need a break, and we’re going to be staying home this holiday season.
Edit: I don't know the update rules, so I'll post updates to my profile should anyone want them.
Update #1: November 27, 2023
Not sure how to do updates on posts, so figured I'd post anything on my profile. Folks have private messaged me and this will be easier I think?
It's 11/27 and Thanksgiving just happened. Hubby and I stayed home. We got a small turkey and made our own little thanksgiving. It was nice. We ate around noon, then watched a movie, and later sat outside with a bottle of wine to watch the sun set behind the trees and neighbor houses.
We usually take the day before off, drive to my folks, stay the night, and help with the Thanksgiving Day cooking. So it wasn't until Wednesday night that my mom broke the silence. Mom called and asked when I was showing up, and I told her we were staying home this year, but for them to have a happy Thanksgiving, and to give the rest of the family my love. She was quiet for a long time after I said that, and I think she eventually mumbled an "okay", or something, and hung up. It wasn't an angry hang up. Just a hang up. On Thanksgiving day, I sent a group "Happy Thanksgiving!" gif to our family group chat. I received a few "happy Thanksgiving"'s back. No one's said anything else. There's been no posts on Facebook.
Update #2: December 12, 2023
So, I think I mentioned in one of my comments that my dad and I usually talk on the phone every Sunday morning. We're both early risers so we'd chat over our morning coffees and watch the sunrise. Him and I haven't really spoken since this all went down and it's been tough. I'm used to talking to him, you know?
Well, I was sitting outside in my usual spot, watching the sun rise and freezing my butt off, and he called me. I'm not entirely sure how to describe the emotions I felt. It was a mix of panic, hope, terror, happiness, and dread. I ended up answering because I just had to know what he wanted. It was an awkward conversation. He didn't address the current "drama", but instead tiptoed around the situation with all the grace of an cow on stilts. For instance, a simple "How are you doing?" Type question was answered with a "Not good." And the whole conversation would stall out for a bit because he knew why I wasn't doing well. So we ended up talking about the weather, the various winter birds we'd seen in our feeders, and the Christmas decorations around town. Things like that.
Eventually he asked if we were coming out for Christmas, and sounded sad when I told him we weren't. He asked if him and step mom could come visit us instead, and I told him it wasn't a good idea this year. That hubby and I were going to spend a quiet holiday together. I let him know he should be receiving some gifts at his PO Box any day now, so to please pick them up from the post office and put them under the family tree for everyone. He said he'd ship ours to us as well.
And that was pretty much it. No crazy drama to report. The only posts on Facebook have been the usual Christmas excitement ones, countdowns, photos of Santa, silly gift ideas, photos of company Christmas parties.
On a personal note: Hubby and I are doing alright. Our health is good, our spirits high, and we're as solid as ever. We each got Christmas bonus' at our jobs, so we're excited about that. They're not large, but we're happy to have them. We have also done advent calendars for the first time ever. I got him a Lego one, and he got me a hot chocolate one. We're going to do the calendars again next year. Maybe make a tradition out of it.
Everyone please have a safe and happy holidays.
Inheritance: December 16, 2023
I've received a lot - A LOT - of messages and private DMs urging me to check into inheritance and such. I'm really touched a lot of Internet strangers are worried about me and I wanted to ensure everyone that inheritance is most likely not an issue here. I'd almost be relieved if it was, because then it would at least make some sense. Money does weird things to people, you know?
No one in my family is wealthy by any means. After my grandparents' passed, their small estate was used to pay for their end of life expenses and remaining assets split up. Everyone directly related got an equal split (so excluded my dad and the step parents). I don't remember the exact amount I received, but it was around $5k if I recall. My brother gave me his share, too, so I could finish paying off my college debt while the interest freeze was active.
The great uncle from California has kids and grand kids, and great grandkids of his own, and also isn't wealthy. I think one of his kids makes good money doing something in finance, but I'm not entirely sure. I can't imagine he left us anything, as we hardly knew him. My mom, aunt, and uncle only met him a few times in their lives, and my brother and I even less. Grandma and him were close, but I don't think he liked my grandpa much.
Christmas: December 25, 2023
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I've received a lot of support through my posts and I'm really grateful. Writing these updates have had a therapeutic effect.
Yesterday was Sunday, but I didn't answer my dad when he called. I just really didn't feel up to a pointless chat, so let it go to voicemail. He tried to reach me a few times throughout the day, but I didn't answer.
Our bestie last minute invited us over to his house for Christmas day lunch (today), so husband and I were busy all Christmas Eve making cookies, peanut brittle, and homemade suckers/hard candies for his kids. Mom tried to reach out as well, but I also ignored her calls.
We had a BLAST at lunch! Our friend's kids are a lot of fun to be around. They got some techy presents from their grandparents (Quest vr headset and steam decks, lucky little rascals) Friend and his wife aren't good with tech, while hubby and I are, so we helped get them set up while our friend played a good host to his folks and inlaws. The grandparents didn't realize that a Steam deck required a Steam account, so we got the kids all their own accounts set up, added them to our steam friends lists, and gifted them some games. We also bought them a few VR games for their headset, and they were off to the races with Beat Saber in no time.
As for my folks: My brother texted and asked if we could talk sometime tomorrow. I think me ignoring mom and dad has caused some kind of upset. Which they deserve.
Brother’s call: December 26, 2023
Spoke with my brother over the phone this morning.
For starters, he apologized for everything. Him and I are good (for now). For a bit of background, my brother and I are only 2 years apart. There weren't a lot of kids around growing up, so the two of us were often stuck doing stuff together. So we have a lot of shared interests and passions. He's been pretty silent on this whole matter, but still "part of the group", if you know what I mean. I think the thought of losing him out of my life was probably the most painful, because he's always been there. He was my rock until I met my husband. He's definitely a Mama's boy, though, so anything mom wanted, he made sure she got. I'm happy to have him back.
Without further ado, here's the story from the horse's mouth:
Mom apparently had a cancer scare late last year (which no one told me about, go figure), and dad had a stint put in his heart back in January (which I did know about). This "sense of mortality" has apparently lit a fire under Mom's ass to get me back home. But since I wasn't reacting to her passive aggressive hinting, she and step mom decided to go full crazy. My great uncle's health was bad, and he'd been asking about funeral arrangements for his sister (my grandma) for a while, so the moms decided to plan it. And use the event as a giant middle finger to me. They kept all the planning pretty hush-hush between the two of them, so no one on our side of the family actually knew about the funeral until like 2 weeks before. The moms said they'd invited hubby and I. No one thought anything about it. No one thought to mention, confirm, or check with me.
The plan was to scatter the ashes, say a few words, and maybe head to town for lunch. It was a small affair. The mom's didn't even tell the family that our great uncle was coming for it. Like I said, it was a small thing. Barely a footnote. No one thought it was odd because we're pretty chill people.
4th of July happens. Hubby and I are out. No one thought to mention it, as we were all busy celebrating and having a great time. Any time the topic of "this weekend" would start, the conversation would be quickly shifted by one of the moms. We went back home.
8th of July happens. Great uncle rolls into town with a few of his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, and it's a surprise to everyone (but the moms). Everyone drives to the maple grove and the moms have brought a ton of food and stuff. It's a full blown party. No one on my side noticed I wasn't there, because there were so many extra faces outside the usual group. They did the spreading of the ashes, they said their words, they ate, they had a great time. It wasn't until our great uncle left, and all his side left with him, that they realized I wasn't there. And hadn't been there.
And this is where the crazy went up a notch. My brother says the moms were happy no one noticed I wasn't there. And that this was proof to everyone that I needed to move back because I was so easily forgotten about. Because none of them thought to reach out, right? They basically did a ton of guilt tripping manipulation bullshit and it made everyone upset at me for not showing up. Somehow it was my fault for being excluded. So suddenly everyone was on their side with "sticking it to me".
But then a few months went by, and tempers cooled, and then I guess the horror of it set in. Followed by the shame, but by then they were "in too deep". How do you undo something like this? And since I hadn't brought it up, I guess they figured they would all just stay quiet about it and hope I never asked about a funeral.
That's when I discovered the situation from my great uncle's Facebook and called my mom, who panicked and went with the stupidest solution. Claiming I was there. Don't I remember?
I ended up talking with a few friends from high school, mentioning the situation, and word got back to those in town. So suddenly town gossip and little old church ladies got involved. Was I, or wasn't I at the funeral? Did my family forget to invite me to the funeral of the only grandparents I'd ever know? Or am I just causing a ruckus? My brother said they all just went with mom's answer. Of course they wouldn't forget me. Of course I was there. Of course they're good people. And it just snowballed.
The family expected me to eventually fold. I'm usually a nonconfrontational person, so me sticking to my guns was unexpected. And then I missed Thanksgiving. And now Christmas. With no sign of backing down. And I guess the realization that I could just stop being part of their lives is setting in and my parents are panicking. He's tried just getting them to apologize and explain, but stubbornness prevails. They want to rug sweep, but I'm not letting them.
My brother is upset with everything that's happened. He's realized just how crappy it all has been and he wants nothing to do with it anymore. But since he lives with my mom, he can't "get away from it".
He has asked if he can come stay with us for a little bit. I spoke with hubby, and he's in agreement with me that my brother can come crash in our spare bedroom for as long as he wants. Brother works remotely, so it's no trouble for him to pick up and go. I believe he's making the trip today or tomorrow. Not entirely sure, but I expect crap to hit the fan when he arrives.
On a side note, hubby's stoked that my brother and I made up. The two usually game together, but haven't due to "the situation". He's downstairs right now setting up his man cave in preparation for my brother's arrival. I'm happy to see him so excited.
Brother's Here: December 27, 2023
My brother rolled in late last night. He'd obviously been crying and when I opened the door, he just held me and sobbed. I'd never seen him like that before and soon both of us were just standing in the doorway crying into one another. He kept apologizing. Over and over again. Said he wasn't sure why he went with it. Just kept saying sorry. Hubby got him all set up in the spare bedroom while brother and I talked. My brother's a wreck. He's always been a big guy, but he's lost a lot of weight and his clothes just hang off him. If I didn't know better, I'd think he was on drugs. We talked for a little bit before bed and he re-explained everything for my husband. I'd told hubby the story, but it was just so weird that hearing it again helped.
This morning my brother was up at dawn making some coffee and getting his work day going. Hubby's off all week (lucky) so hubby made us working folk some pancakes and bacon. So far everything's peaceful. We've decided not to answer any calls from our family. They've been made aware that he arrived safely, and that we are going to spend the New Years together, and that we're not answering any calls until January 1st. They may text if they wish. I'm sure they're losing their minds. Serves them right.
Everyone, have a safe and happy new years! Don't drink and drive!
Happy 2024!: January 2, 2024
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holidays, and may the new year be full of joy and happiness!
Not too much of an update. Things here have been quiet. My brother's settled in nicely and he's a great housemate. Our place isn't very big, but we have full basement and a nice outside patio/porch area so it doesn't feel crowded at all with the extra addition. He's a quiet and clean guy. No hassle at all. He got some fresh clothes from the Walmart, a haircut, and trimmed his beard, so he's more "presentable" now. He's a lady killer when he gets cleaned up. He's made nice with the (very nosy, but kind) retired couple next door and is adapting to "city living" nicely.
Folks back home have been mostly well behaved. There's been a few texts back and forth, as we're not answering calls. Mom mainly wants to know when brother's coming back, but he's keen on staying here for a while. Mom said I can't "keep him" and I told her he's a grown ass man and can do what he wants. Brother says he has her blocked after she ORDERED him to return home.
Brother has tentatively asked if he could stay long term, should he decide to, or at least longer than a usual visitor would stay. Which we're fine with. He has a good paying job and could afford an apartment, but he's never lived on his own and I would guess he has some anxiety about it. Should that be the case, he'll start paying us some rent and we'd probably adjust to give him the basement as his own space.
Had to change the locks: January 17, 2024
My brother is officially staying with us for the long haul. Hubby and him spent all Sunday organizing the basement and shifting things around so he now has his own area to be comfortable in. He's pretty handy and has also started fixing little things around our house. Our windows and doors have never closed and locked/unlocked smoother. He even fixed one of the closets we never use because we can never get the darn door open. Sadly, he also had to change the locks on our house and get us all new keys.
This is because while hubby and I were out this Saturday, the moms showed up. They'd been calling and texting us all week, but we weren't really answering them, so I guess the two decided to drive over and hash it out in person. They have emergency keys to my place, and just let themselves in. Brother told them to leave, they argued, and my nosy (but kind) neighbors called the police when they noticed the commotion. So, we get a call from neighbor's wife, return home to some cops in our yard, all the neighbors out "vacuuming their trees", and my nosy (but kind) neighbors standing on my porch with my brother behind them, doing their best Gandalf "You shall not pass" impression.
Had to talk with the cops, explain that we were having a family dispute and word vomited. I don't really remember what all I said, and was shaking a lot. Our local cops are really great. Fantastic guys and gals in blue, and took it all in stride. It's really cold here, so one had me join him in his cruiser with the heat on, and gave me a bottle of water to calm down while we talked. They asked if we wanted the moms trespassed but I wasn't sure if that counted as a criminal charge so just asked the cops if they could just make them leave, which the cops did with no fuss. I think the moms were shocked we were taking this so seriously. They didn't fight or scream at us. Just left quietly.
My dad promised me he'd make sure his wife left us alone. "Or else". He said he'd also have a stern talk with my mom. Him and I talked Sunday morning, and he seemed absolutely at the end of his rope. Husband jokingly told my dad he could move in, too. To which he declined.
Not sure where to go from here, but we're getting some ring cameras installed once they arrive. And everyone but my dad is blocked. Hopefully they all just leave us alone.
Nothing New To Report: February 2, 2024
Had a lot of DMs for updates, but don't have much anything to report on. The moms are behaving themselves. All's quiet on the western front. Felt weird ignoring or copy/pasting "no updates" to everyone, so here's what we've been doing, should anyone care.
Dad got a new bird/squirrel feeder from Amazon (looks like a little picnic table for a child's dolly but has a mesh top for the bird seed. I think it's supposed to be for chickens?) It's totes adorbs. To his horror, it also works as a Cooper hawk feeder, so now he's "fortifying his defenses" and putting up some trellises around it. He'll have to wait till warmer weather before planting anything to grow on them.
We had some ring cameras installed and put in a motion-activated camera that double functions as a light bulb. It goes in the light fixture outside the front door and is pretty cool. Video quality isn't all that great, but it's a nice addition I guess. It does overlook the bird feeders, so I've been watching it on my lunch breaks on the days I have to go into the office.
Hubby and brother are feuding. They started a coop farm in Stardew Valley a few days ago and they both want to romance Leah. My husband confided in me that he's also been romancing Sebastian as a backup. I'm not sure why he's keeping this a secret, but he's pretty smug about it.
RELEVANT COMMENTS
fractal_frog I hope your dad can outsmart the hawks!
OOP: He'll be able to, I just know it. He's used to dealing with the wildlife and having hawks about, but he just wasn't expecting one to snag a meal right from his new feeder.
I told him it was "technically" still a bird feeder. Just....for bigger birds. Which he thought was funny. He said he might make a little "no hawks allowed" sign to put up next to it.
MissOP: keep the updates coming. the moms are so close to folding it's just a little bit more. LMAO also, the bro mance between your husband and brother is so cute. lol Honestly, I think your husband making sure he has a side piece of Sebastian is absolutely the play.
OOP: So far still no word from the moms, but I hope you're right. I would love an apology and for us to begin moving past this. But I NEED that apology. I feel selfish saying that, but I refuse to "be the bigger person" on this. I just won't.
As for my brother and husband, yeah, they're basically soul mates. The two hit it off immediately when they first met, and they've been thick as thieves for years.
Update: February 27, 2024
My dad came out for a visit over the weekend. We had a good time and the weather was lovely for some grilling and beers. It was really nice to see him again and he seemed healthy and in good spirits.
Here's his report from back home: Step mom (dad's wife) has started to realize she's screwed up. I credit her change of mindset to the fact that my dad sat her down and laid it out for her: she leaves his kids alone, or she's getting divorce papers. That apparently shut her up right quick, because they had a prenup done when they married and I'm not sure the details of it, but it wouldn't end favorably for her. She hasn't worked in years, so I imagine she'd be eligible for alimony? But I'm not versed in any of that legal mumbojumbo. Dad didn't seem too worried about it, so I'm not gonna worry about it.
Step dad was pissed the police were involved in the last "mom visit" (despite no one getting arrested or anything) and was in a "the kids are out of control and need to be reigned back in" mindset. When my dad pointed out that "the kids" in question were all in their mid-30s, it took some of the steam out of stepdad's sails. According to my dad, even my mom looked a little surprised when he said that. So, part of me is wondering if a good chunk of this whole thing is my mom not truly realizing that her kids were grown, and no longer children she could make demands of. Both of the moms have left us alone. I expected my mom to continue to kick up a fuss, but I think the cops spooked her.
There was a wonderful suggestion by a comment or to get their pastor involved, which I passed along to my dad. Dad has since spoken to their pastor about everything. He's a young guy, relatively new to their church, and joked that his first month on the job he had to do 3 funerals in a row and his new "flock" were just dying to get away from him, so he's got a sense of humor which is nice. The new pastor agreed to sit down with everyone and help the family hash it all out in a true "Come to Jesus" type moment next month, so that maybe we could celebrate Easter together as our first holiday as a family. Dad said the pastor was aware our family was having some troubles, but unsure of exactly what was going on, and since he was new, the pastor didn't want to pry. He has also agreed to do a small service down at my uncle's maple grove later in the summer, as it usually floods and is a muddy mess all spring. According to my dad, my aunt and uncle are so over all the drama and just ready to move on, so I expect hugs and apologies from them when we next meet.
Stardew Valley Update: My brother was victorious in the grand fight for Leah. It was a hard battle. Well fought. When my husband exposed his plans to woo Sebastian all this time, it was quite the betrayal. Dramatics aside, their farm is really cute and I'm so happy they're enjoying the game!
Update 4/1 - Final one I think - April 1, 2024
Happy April Fools everyone! I hope you all check your caramel apples for stray onions before taking a bite! I also hope your Easter weekend was a delightful one.
It is with great joy that I tell you all about our most recent update! Possibly even a conclusion to this whole ordeal.
The entire family (aunt, uncle, moms, dads, brother, me, husband) and pastor met at my dad's house and we all sat down to hash the situation out. As expected from what my dad said, my aunt and uncle greeted us all with apologies and hugs, which was nice. My uncle usually helps host the Easter egg hunts with the church and he brought our Easter baskets to give to us in case us kids weren't sticking around the for the weekend. I'm not sure why but seeing it made me tear up and feel stupid, because it was just a basket of candy but it meant a lot to me for some reason.
The pastor led us in a prayer and talked about forgiveness and such. He then asked us all to talk one at a time about how we're feeling and what we want the end result of today to be. No one was allowed to interrupt so everyone got to talk. It was nice. The consensus for the group was that most everyone wanted things to go back to "normal". The only ones who had any variance off this was my mom and step dad. They both wanted all us kids to move back to the area.
The pastor asked them why they wanted us back, and neither could give a good reason other than "because family", and the pastor asked us if we were thriving where we were. And we said we were. He asked if we were happy there. Which we were. He then asked my mom and step dad if they wanted us to give up our happiness to make them happy.
And Mom broke down and said no. We all had a good cry. The pastor then asked about the funeral and lies that led up to it and followed it and how it made us all feel and what we wished we'd done differently if we had the chance. It was all very emotional, but in a good way, you know? Everyone apologized and admitted they f-ed up and did a really crappy thing.
We all talked for a long, long time and the pastor was a great mediator. Eventually we all reached some sort of resolution and I think we're good now. Emotions are still high and a little raw in areas, but we stayed for Easter weekend and had a nice time. We're going to keep moving forward slowly and try to repair the relationship, but I believe we're well and truly out of the woods.
As for my brother, he's still staying with us, and mom will stop trying to guilt trip him back home. He's thinking about renting a small apartment in our area but we're not pushing him to make a decision. He knows he's welcome to stay as long as he wants. I think he wants to try dating (he's had a few girlfriends but never anything serious) and is embarrassed to bring any girls around our place, lol. He's been going to a few random classes/bookclubs at the local library for something free to do and hitting it off with all the little old ladies who attend, and they keep trying to hook him up with girls his age who they know. He has been on a few lunches/coffee dates with a couple girls, but I think he's too embarrassed by the attention to give it a real try at "dating" any of them. He's happy, though, which is all I could ask for.
I'm not sure if there will be any more updates, as I think it's all be resolved about as much as it can be at the moment. I wanted to thank you all for your words of advice and giving me a place to vent and scream into the void. Please be kind to one another and to yourselves. Thank you.

emjkr: What a nice and hopeful update, I’m really glad you stuck to your guns when everyone threw sanity out the window!
But, could your mother explain how she thought this would work out in her favour?
OOP: I don't think mom thought too far ahead. I believe she assumed it would all just magically work out the way she wanted it to. She said she wasn't sure what she was expecting to happen (which I think was a lie, but I wasn't going to push it).
mak_zaddy: This was a great update! But ummmmmm no stardew valley update? What gives? Has Sebastian been woo’ed? How’s Leah? What’s happening?
OOP: Sebastian has indeed been wooed (and whoohooed) There's kids and cows and chickens. The two are still having a wonderful time at the game. They're working on completing the community center but it's slow going as they aren't trying to speedrun and just doing things as they want. I believe they're thinking about going into the desert mines once they complete that bundle, but they're both super chicken shit about it!
-my-cabbages: I don't really understand what you had to apologize for ... but I'm glad you're happy and the situation seems to be settling down
OOP: There wasn't much of an apology on my end, as everyone agreed I had done nothing wrong. Mine was more of a "I'm sorry you didn't feel as though I would listen." Type apology, which I don't really believe is a proper apology because apologies like that push the blame back on another. I mostly expressed my feelings and the shock of it all, and how betrayed I felt.

----NEW UPDATE----

Small, happy update: May 7, 2024 (1 month later)
Things as wonderful as the moment. Still doing baby steps with The Moms. We're texting and talking on the phones more, which is nice. Very civil.
Dad "accidentally" bought a bunch of hand crafted bird feeders at a craft fair. By accidentally, I mean: he had a little too much fun in the beer tent, went for a stroll while step mom wasn't looking, and stumbled upon a guy's booth and bought "one of each". He wouldn't tell me how MANY "one of each" was, but he cackled like a witch when I asked. Step mom said she's forcing him to give a few to me, so I'm expecting a delivery or a Dad-visit any day now.
My brother is officially "going steady" with a girl. We've met her a few times and she seems like a real sweetheart. She's our age and has a little boy (5-6 years old, I haven't asked) from a previous relationship (The dad's not in the picture from what I can gather). She's the granddaughter of one of his Book Club members, so the old ladies made good match makers in the end. The relationship is still very new and I'm routing for them.
No new Stardew Valley updates. Work has been a little crazy lately and I haven't been able to play much of anything, and brother has been distracted by his new lady friend. So, husband finally started Baldur's Gate 3, and fell for Gale's "magic trick" so now those two are a thing. I expect him to be sufficiently distracted from reality for the next few weeks.

2024.05.12 19:20 EJC28 Packers 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 1, Pick 25 - Jordan Morgan, OT, Arizona:
NFL: This pick reflects the sheer depth of this offensive tackle class. Morgan is an experienced player who will help protect Jordan Love and allow him to flourish in the pocket.
CBS Sports: C+. I might have taken Graham Barton here, but they need help up front so I get it. Morgan can move inside to guard but if they move right tackle Zach Tom to center, he would be their right tackle.
ESPN: If you're going to make Jordan Love one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, which they will soon, you better make sure you can protect him. That's why taking an offensive lineman in the first round for the first time in 13 years made so much sense -- even though Morgan was the seventh tackle to come off the board in the first 25 picks. The only real blemish on Morgan's resume was a torn ACL late in the 2022 season. He had planned to declare for the 2023 draft if not for the injury. Instead, he returned to play in every game last season
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Cried like a baby at the end of Ted Lasso.
Round 2, Pick 45 - Edgerrin Cooper, LB, Texas A&M:
NFL: Green Bay slid back and drafted a top-40 talent on my board in Cooper. He's the classic mold of what this Packers scouting staff seeks in a linebacker, possessing excellent speed, length and pursuit ability. There's a starting spot opposite Quay Walker, and I think Cooper will grab it, but both those players can play a little too freely and loosely at times.
CBS Sports: B+. Young, high-energy off-ball ‘backer. Plus range. Loves attacking downhill and very effective vs. the run. Flashed in coverage too with ball skills. But tackle reliability must improve at next level. Ultra-quick trigger. IDs plays in a flash. Some rawness but plenty of tantalizing traits.
ESPN: This pick was tailor-made for new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who is overseeing a switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 base scheme. He inherited only two starting-caliber inside backers in Quay Walker and Isaiah McDuffie after they released former All-Pro De’Vondre Campbell this offseason. This pick came after the Packers traded back from No. 41 overall with the Saints, who gave up Nos. 45, 168 (fifth round) and 190 (sixth). This after the Eagles traded up to No. 40 to take Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean, a player once thought to be a Packers' target. The Saints then took cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry with the 41st pick.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Can spot the four cloud types: cirrus, cumulus, stratus, and nimbus.
Round 2, Pick 58 - Javon Bullard, S, Georgia:
NFL: The Eagles might lead the NFL in drafting Georgia defenders, but the Packers have been giving them a run for their money in recent years. Bullard fills a need at safety, and he brings the kinds of intangibles this scouting department places a premium on. He can play out of control at times and isn't a tremendous athlete, but Bullard is an intense competitor who can play multiple spots in the secondary and be a four-down player.
CBS Sports: A-. Hair-on-fire stocky safety who can align at nickel CB if needed. Takes great angles against the run and plays with reckless abandon. Runs the alley like a missile. Rarely misses a tackle. Not crazy ball hawk. Smaller with shorter arms. Just a stud football player.
ESPN: After this pick, it's fair to say Gutekunst addressed three of his biggest needs -- tackle, inside linebacker and now safety. Perhaps only cornerback would rank on the same level of need. They're essentially starting over at safety, having moved on from Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens and Rudy Ford. They spent big on free agent Xavier McKinney, but the only other safety with any experience still on the roster was Anthony Johnson Jr., a seventh-round pick last year who played 303 defensive snaps as a rookie. "Obviously the tackle board was stacked, so we addressed that," assistant director of college scouting Pat Moore said. "Then I think Gutey took the best player available at those spots [ILB and safety]."
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Has been trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty.
Round 3, Pick 88 - MarShawn Lloyd, RB, USC:
NFL: This could be Aaron Jones' replacement, even if the Packers added Josh Jacobs this offseason. Lloyd's messy medical history likely was the biggest reason he fell behind some other backs, but his burst, three-down ability and make-you-miss agility make him sort of a poor man's D'Andre Swift.
CBS Sports: A. Older but ultra-sudden thick RB with glimpses of special elusiveness. Speed is a plus to his game. Has a lot of tread left on his tires because he was low-volume back in college. Fumbling issues. Perfect speed acquisition to this stretch-run offense.
ESPN: Yes, Josh Jacobs signed a four-year, $48 million contract in free agency, but the reality of his contract says he's just going year to year. For example, he has a $5.93 million roster bonus due next March if he's still on the team. A year later, his 2025 base salary spikes to $10.2 million. This isn't to say Jacobs will be a one-and-done, but the point is they could move on and save money at any time after this season if they think Lloyd is ready to be the RB1. After letting Aaron Jones go, the Packers have rebuilt their running back room in a hurry.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He may or may not be allowed to own gerbils anymore…
Round 3, Pick 91 - Ty’Ron Hopper, LB, Missouri:
NFL: Hopper wasn't quite as productive last season for Mizzou as he was in 2022, looking a step slow a number of times. Injuries were a big reason why, and Hopper's pro day workout likely was the difference in him landing in Round 3 and not on Day 3. He has pass-rush potential and can drop in zone coverage.
CBS Sports: C+. Ultra-physical off-ball LB. Sleek, exudes athleticism and makes assertive decisions on a routine basis, particularly against the run or blitzer, where he also thrives. Best in that role or as a spy. Long way to go in coverage. Another linebacker?
ESPN: This is what happens when you switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defensive scheme. In fact, Gutekunst didn't hide the fact that he would have to add to the inside linebacker room when, earlier this offseason, he said they will "be a little bit more heavy there, so we're going to have to add some numbers." So drafting Hopper in the third round after taking Cooper in the second round shouldn't have come as a major surprise. Hafley now has some options when it comes to deciding who will line up next to Walker at inside linebacker.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Insists that his pocket sand WILL come in handy one day.
Round 4, Pick 111 - Evan Williams, S, Oregon:
NFL: Williams grew on me as the pre-draft process went on. He might not be special in any way, but he's extremely solid and assignment-sound. He might never be a big playmaker, but Williams can hit and will work to earn some kind of role.
CBS Sports: B-. Not a tremendous athlete but does everything well that teams ask out of a multi-dimensional safety today. Keeps throttle down when flying to outside runs, will make an occasional play in coverage. Not a twitchy nickel type. Best in box or robbing middle of the field. Energy exudes from his playing style. Just not a big-time physical specimen.
ESPN: Gutekunst has never been afraid to double up at a position. He's now done it twice in the first four rounds after taking the two inside linebackers on Friday. He traded up to take his second safety, giving up a sixth-rounder (No. 190 overall, that they got from the Saints a day earlier) to move up from No. 126. There will be an all-out competition for the second safety spot next to Xavier McKinney among Johnson Jr., Bullard and Williams -- who posted some impressive blitzing numbers with 4.5 sacks last season (third-most among FBS defensive backs) and 17 quarterback pressures since the start of 2022 (tied for 10th most among FBS DBs).
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Hopes to be the 111th best player like his idol, Tom Brady.
Round 5, Pick 163 - Jacob Monk, C, Duke:
NFL: Monk played center, guard and tackle over five seasons with the Blue Devils but likely projects to center in the NFL. He's smart and competitive and has above-average athleticism in a smaller frame.
CBS Sports: A-. Hyper-experienced, legitimately versatile blocker who probably plays center or guard at the next level. Athleticism and acceleration off the snap instantly stand out. Doesn’t have immense size or length but can win with quickness or power against smaller upfield rushers. Classic Packers pick. He’ll be a useful depth option for a while.
ESPN: Gutekunst said after taking Morgan in the first round: "You can't have guys that can only play one spot. That's very hard to do. It just puts a lot of stress on your group." Monk embodies that versatility. He began his five-year college career -- which included 58 starts -- at right tackle, moved to right guard for two years and has gone back and forth between center and right guard the last two years. He was one of only seven FBS players with at least 300 snaps at both center and guard last season. Gutekunst traded up five spots with the Buffalo Bills and gave up a sixth-round pick (No. 219 overall).
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Was once attacked by someone’s pet opossum in a Walmart.
Round 5, Pick 169 - Kitan Oladapo, S, Oregon State:
NFL: Oladapo is a nicely proportioned athlete with outstanding length and enough athleticism to be tried as a safety or even a zone corner. He's a bit older but can make his mark at multiple spots because of his willingness to tackle.
CBS Sports: A. Very similar to Jaden Hicks who went a round earlier. Large, strong safety body type but fluid and instinctive in coverage. Could play with a tick more energy but his methodical style keeps him out of trouble re: missing tackles or being baited by misdirection. Huge interception radius. Speed is good, not great. Sound tackler.
ESPN: This should complete the overhaul at safety after the Packers signed Xavier McKinney in free agency and picked two other safeties (Bullard in Round 2 and Williams in Round 4) previously in this draft. The Packers moved on from three safeties who each played at least 500 snaps last season (Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens and Rudy Ford). After starting his career as a walk-on, Oladapo earned second-team All-Pac 12 honors in 2023 when he did not allow a single touchdown pass in 421 coverage snaps.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Is convinced he could pilot a submarine if he had to.
Round 6, Pick 202 - Travis Glover, OT, Georgia State:
NFL: Glover is a typecast developmental OT prospect with so-so movement skills but ideal length and grip strength. He flashed some real finishing ability, albeit vs. a lower level of competition.
CBS Sports: B+. Wide offensive tackle with the frame of a guard but plenty of length. Smooth athleticism for his size and loves to mash at the second level. Balance is good but can get a little overzealous in pass pro. Hand work and punch timing are solid. Another classic Packers pick. Versatile.
ESPN: Stop if you've heard this before: the Packers took another versatile lineman who has lined up at multiple positions. Glover played both tackle spots and left guard in college. He's considered to have a high upside considering his 6-foot-6, 323-pound frame.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Discovered the reddit mods did not spell check the true facts.
Round 7, Pick 245 - Michael Pratt, QB, Tulane:
NFL: If it's me, I am drafting Pratt before both Jordan Travis and Devin Leary, and the Packers aren't afraid to keep investing in QB talents. From the Green Wave to Green Bay, Pratt is good enough to push Sean Clifford to the side and become Jordan Love's understudy -- perhaps as soon as this year -- with his cool, calm, patient approach and quality accuracy.
CBS Sports: B+. Experienced pocket passer with quality arm who was consistent producer at Tulane across multiple seasons. Lights were never too bright for him. Has some improvisational flair to his game. Just not ultra accurate.
ESPN: Gutekunst said he wanted the Packers to get back into the business of drafting and developing (and then possibly trading) quarterbacks. He's now taken one on Day 3 for the second straight year after picking Sean Clifford in the fifth round last year. Clifford served as Love's backup last season, but it appears he'll have to battle for the job again. Pratt, a four-year starter at Tulane and the 11th quarterback selected this year, went 21-3 as a starter the last two seasons.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Brushes his teeth at least ten times a day.
Round 7, Pick 255 - Kalen King, CB, Penn State:
NFL: You can find King's name scattered in some August mock drafts, but his stock continually tumbled after he struggled to match his 2022 performance, didn't test well athletically for his size and lost some Senior Bowl battles. But in the seventh round? King is well worth the small gamble here.
CBS Sports: B+. Previously had RD1 hype but had a disastrous 2023. Athletic chops are there. Has impressive highs just not a natural mirroring type. Plays chippy and throws his weight around against the run.
ESPN: Going into the draft, there was some thought that the Packers could take a corner early -- even as high as the first round. Instead, they waited until their final pick to take one. They seemed to hit on seventh-round cornerback Carrington Valentine last year. King played 84% of his snaps on the outside, splitting it about evenly between the right and left sides.

Who's this guy? [Eastern MA]
I'm pretty sure it's a Cooper's hawk but wanted a second opinion. I've been hearing a red-tailed hawk and a peregrine falcon in my backyard too!
Apologies for the photo quality, this was from our front door camera.

2024.05.12 04:49 Independent-Oven-743 Possible season 4?

David Lynch has expressed an interest in a season 4. If it happens, how do you guys think it will turn out? Do you think Dale Cooper will replace Philip Jeffries in that weird boiler thing as punishment for messing with time? Or Hawk being the main focus and he goes looking for Cooper?

2024.05.11 20:36 klumzyfule66 Escape from Alcatraz tri in 4 weeks

Signed up for Escape From Alcatraz as my first triathlon! This is a super long post and might read kind of diary-y, sorry - there are a couple questions at the bottom (maybe 2/3 down?) if you're not into my stories (I've been told I'm a terrible story teller, so take that for what you will). Definitely a little excited, so it's very much too long. Apologies
Anyway, saw pictures las summer of a buddy of mine that did it last year and I guess you could say it inspired me to finally sign up for it. I've always been fascinated with amazing, infamous, crazy human feats - DB Cooper, the Red Baron (which was my nickname during my wrestling career ), the Alcatraz escape... The story behind the movie Alive, climbing K2/Everest etc. I've been aware of the race for maybe twenty or more years, always thought it would be cool to do.
Never really did I truly think I would, because if I were to get pushed off a boat, I'm definitely more of an "I probably won't die" swimmer. Did swimming lessons as a kid, but never really swam more than maybe 400m at any one time before, which did not go well. And in hindsight was probably one of the most stupid things I've ever done (and I've done more than my share of stupid things). So I always figured 1.5 miles would be out of the question (forgive the unit of measurement switch!)
Anyway, I got selected! Was actually a big surprise. Hemmed and hawed a little bit about the price, about my poor swimming ability, that I should really get ankle surgery, having never actually trained for any long-duration endurance sport... Even though I'm pretty active and am always in a decent level of fitness (example, 2 years ago I decided to run a 10k two days before the event, finishing a respectable 52:24. I don't "go for runs" as part of my fitness.) in addition to the swim, I've never biked more than ~5 miles nor ran longer than 10k... But then I thought to myself: I wrestled at a pretty high level for a pretty long time. I'm definitely a subscriber to the "once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy" mindset. So I said fuck it and signed up, with 3 simple goals (in order of importance, in case it's not obvious):
1) Don't drown
2) Finish before the boats bring you in
3) Don't use the rafts to rest
I did swimming lessons as a kid, so I can do breast/back/side/front stroke. Unfortunately that's in order of skill I think I have for each, which of course is suboptimal for a swim where you're allowed to utilize any stroke.
Fast forward to my first swim in March. Take my kids to swimming lessons and figured it would be a good spot to test my pace. Thinking to myself that cutoff is an hour, so I need to swim only 1.5 mph to make it under limit... But effectively not even that, because if I'm close, they're probably going to pull in the ones furthest away first. And I walk at like 3+, so definitely should be able to swim half that fast. Wrong. I could not do that at all. My first 50 I looked at my watch, just over 1:10. Before you give me too much credit, that's 50 short course yards. Then I would routinely need 20-45 sec rest after each lap. Ended up only 550 yards in like 20 min. Pace just over 3.5 min per 100y. And that was with like a ten min rest in the middle. Oh shit. I don't typically overestimate my abilities, particularly with something I know I'm not strong at. Definitely figured I would've gotten over half mile during the lesson. Now I'm wondering if I'll be able to finish the swim. I HAVE to finish it. Another part of the reason I signed up was as a challenge to myself. We had recently got a house on Topsail Island, NC, and with my kids, I was never confident enough in my abilities to save them - without major injury to one or both of us - if they got out in the ocean too far, or stuck in a rip current, and couldn't make it back. Still don't know how to diagnose a rip current, so I guess that's another thing I need to learn. But anyway, never did anything about trying to improve my swim, so signing up for the Escape seems like THE MOST logical thing I could've ever done.
At any rate, after realizing exactly how poor I was, i had been mentioning to my therapist how my Dr told me I'm definitely a good candidate for ankle surgery, so if it gets close and I'm not feeling confident for the race, I can always do the surgery and take an injury deferral... And they're like "it just sounds like you're trying to give yourself a reason to not do it." Which of course hearing that helped me kick myself into gear.
Signed up for my local Charlotte Masters program and started swimming a lot. I'm much more efficient now, and recently did an OWS and a local tri event, whose times made me officially confident enough that I'm not worrying if I'll finish before the cutoff (aided now even more that the cutoff is now 75 min). Was even pacing under 2 min per 100 for some of the time at the pool today. Weekends is long course so that's per 100 METERS, keep up with the changes! Doing the Pier to Pier swim next weekend in Wilmington, NC as a final confidence boost, as that swim should be longer than at Alcatraz.
Given my initial goals after signing up, I have been swimming like 3-5x per week for the past two months, sometimes twice a day. Did strength training maybe 3x a week, but I haven't really done much for the other disciplines. Back in March I rode 18 miles (bike leg length at Alcatraz) just to see how long it took, and followed by a run to see how well I can run after a ride. Did the bike in 91 min, and run was 57 (6.4 miles when Alcatraz run leg is 8). I basically wrote off the slow bike time, because I use a shit hybrid commuter type (that's probably too small) I got from Costco like 7 years ago that hasn't been tuned up in a few years (Infinity boss.two women's - I'm male but women's was either cheaper or was all they had in stock). Also that was the only time I'd ever done a length like that. The run started hurting my hip/knee so I didn't finish as much as I wanted. I couldn't get my cadence up where it was supposed to. Come to realize it's probably because my bike cadence was too slow and so recent muscle memory kept my feet plodding.
Did the local tri (750m/18mi/3mi) April 27. Outside of riding to/from work (~1.6 miles) or the pool (~2.1 miles) a couple times a week, I rode exactly 0 times in preparation. I knew my bike was not a great option, so my wife let me use her MTB. I'm sure the wheels have a good bit of rolling resistance, but it is a hard tail so probably not a ton of power loss (but I'm no expert). Anyway I did that 18 miles in 77 min. Thought I'd finish it ~ten min faster.
The run I did maybe a little faster than expected, 3 mi in 24:08… long story short (or, I guess.... long), I finished middle of the pack for novices, but I'm terms of individual splits, 10th on swim, 17 bike, 7 run. I beat Luke Kuechly on the run part, so I'm going to bring that up as often as possible maybe until I die! For you ex-US folks, sorry I don't have an equivalent name that's plays rugby (Luke is a future Hall of Fame NFL player). But anyway, if I were to have been 10th on the bike, that means I saved 6+ minutes, putting me within my goal time (sub 2 hrs). Definitely could feel dehydration an issue on the run with the odd low muscle pain/mini cramping for a bit. Once I got the first aid station and a bit of water it went away. I only had one bottle of water on my person for the bike, and it dropped twice so I think some of it spilled onto the roads anyway (no bike aid stations; I thought there was one).
Onto question stuff....
Now that I'm confident I'll be able to finish the swim, figure it's time to work on the bike. I've read its ~1500 ft elevation gain, and many people walk up some of the hills. That's given me a new goal- NO WALKING THE BIKE. Always figured I would just ride my crap bike to train, and then rent a bike there so I could get used to the feel of the different handlebars, etc. ($80 from local shop), then rent the bike out there ($270). But I just noticed that the local charity bike shop has a couple bikes that would fit me (I'm 6', 182 cm, so the frames they have, have been too small) - a Cannondale Synapse ($650) and a Trek ($450). I should probably upgrade my bike just generally speaking (but definitely if I plan to do more races), but I ride the one I have pretty hard, without worry about having do ride over curbs, or paying attention to the terrain on which I ride, gravel, jacked up sidewalks, etc. I always assumed that it would jack up the rims etc since they have smaller tires. No idea about the Trek, but some googling done, and it seems like the Synapse is a 2012 model. We've been using this shop for years, and it seems like (to me, an ignoramus) they do a good job of replacing parts, tune ups, etc after they get donated, to put them back out to sell. So does it really matter that the bike is that old? I'm not sure if they replace with cheap parts for cheap bikes, and nicer parts for better bikes. Is there much of a difference between bikes to someone who hasn't really done much biking? I can't imagine if I ride the bikes a quarter mile I'll be able to notice something that would be a show-stopper either way.
If I buy a bike to take out there, it would "save" me on ~$350 for purchase (from rentals I no longer need), and I'd have a decent bike when I get back. However when I looked a little more, seems like Southwest charges $75 to ship bikes. And it seems like I'd have to take the bike apart and put it in some sort of special luggage (just a cardboard box?!), which of course would eat more into the 'savings' of just buying a bike. If it fits within the guidelines to not be oversized luggage, I'm not sure how they'd know it's a bike. But alas, I couldn't even take off and put back the wheel of my current bike without messing up how the gears move, so putting it all back I'd most likely have to pay a bike mechanic (or are they free for participants of the event?). So I guess the 'effective' cost to buy a new bike would be around $200-250 less than 'sticker.'
Cannondale: https://www.tripsforkidscharlotte.org/inventory?pgid=k859tcnt-29a029fc-69f3-4d5f-b9b2-bbdad07863f7
Trek: https://www.tripsforkidscharlotte.org/inventory?pgid=k859tcnt-2b4930c3-89a5-4d54-b3bd-d7a34901a844
So I guess bike questions:
1) I've heard many complaints about the way airlines ship bikes - would it be worth it to risk it getting all damaged since it's not like it's any big time, high level bike? And is it a huge pain? I'm not looking to compete here, so I definitely want to avoid huge hassles when possible.
2) Are the used bikes even good for the price? The Synapse seems to be a popular model with a decent price tag relative what I saw on the internet during a 15 minute search, even if old and $200 more than the Trek. Don't know anything about the Trek other than I always thought they were more a MTB name.
Nutrition questions:
Given the race should be (at least for me) under 4 hrs, prob 3.5, I get I should be able to finish the race with just water. Of course definitely don't want to do that. I've been reading generally about on-course nutrition, and figured I'll bring some clif bars, gummy bears, watesome type of Gatorade, and probably some kind of caffeine pill and salt tablet just in case.
1) But with my reading, I did notice a couple things conspicuously absent about people's nutrition plans. Why is that?
a) Protein - Is this because of its high fluid/energy needs to metabolize, so one shouldn't 'waste' on that during races? And/or the body doesn't really repair itself mid-exercise anyway?
b) Fiber - Thought this would be helpful to avoid both GI discomfort, and swings in blood sugar. My understanding is that at a high heart rate (don't know exact), blood stops/slows flowing to digestive system and flows more to muscles to continue fueling them, so I thought that bowel movements wouldn't really be an issue mid race? Or also is it that we are burning such an exorbitant amount of calories per hour that it's practically impossible to not race at a caloric deficit anyway, so worrying about blood sugar swings is lower on the priority list?
2) Outside of that, as mentioned I am not a great swimmer and anticipate I will be swallowing a good bit of the salt water of the bay. Should that impact the the amount of salt tablets/electrolytes that I take? Definitely feel like I don't drink enough, but that should be easy enough to fix, bc it's not like I don't drink because I think I'll feel nauseous.
3) Do people (generally) carry water bottles with them for 8 mile run? There is water and isotonic available at each mile. I anticipate pacing 8 or maybe 9 max min per mile, so I should be finishing that in under 70 min. (8 min/mile is ~5 min/km)
I figure I'll probably burn my last match at the top of the sand ladder, and let the last ~25 mins just be mostly downhill, muscle memory, with the excitement of almost being finished, carrying me to the end.
Thanks all- sorry it's so long, guess I got a little excited!!

My Cooper's Hawks have laid Eggs! 🥚🥚🥚
The Male has spent the most time laying on and incubating them, just wondering if anybody knows if this is common? Rarely see the female laying on them but I have caught her once or twice. Wondering what she is doing while he is at the nest?

2024.05.11 14:24 swing_sultan [QCrit] FLIGHT OF THE HAWK - Adult Fantasy, 115k, 1st Attempt

Hi all! I am applying to a mentoring programme where you need to write a synopsis that "includes the main plot and characters, summary of themes, and a hint of an ending". I asked a fellow writer friend about their submission and they've included comps. I know these aren't the most recent but thought I could get away with it as it isn't an official query! Looking for constructive criticism so please don't hesitate to explain how it can be improved.
FLIGHT OF THE HAWK is a multi-POV 115k adult fantasy, the first in a planned series. This journey through a Byzantine/Persian-influenced kingdom will appeal to fans of Chakraborty’s THE CITY OF BRASS, while the necessary yet uncomfortable relationship between mages and nobility is reminiscent of Wooding’s THE WEAVERS OF SARAMYR.
Nahira went mad the day her parents died. Five years later, she is sent from the orphanage to make her own way in the world, accompanied only by shadows that whisper to her at every turn. Her attempts to find work in the capital, Baelport, result in her father’s best friend kidnapping her into slavery. As she develops friendships with both slaves and slavers, she struggles to trust herself in order to win her freedom. After one of her new friends is sold into a gladiator’s ring, she must decide whether to save the children at the expense of the other slaves, or continue to cooperate for everyone’s safety.
Since the Ghost Hawk won his title with the assassination of Duke Beren, life’s been relatively easy. He only has one problem — the rising cost of his mother’s drug addiction. When the high mage offers a princely sum for the capture of the sole witness to Duke Beren’s death, it’s a deal he can’t resist. The part about saving the world from a mad king? Well, that’s someone else’s problem.
As the Ghost Hawk races to find Nahira before his mother’s time runs out, he finds himself confronted with his worst fear of all… socialising. In a world where he can no longer trust himself, he must overcome his cautious nature and learn to put his trust in others.
And all the while, people across the kingdom begin to act on their basest impulse as the king grows crueler and more erratic by the day.

Ginger bug and natural soda
I successfully made my first ginger bug and now I want to store it. I know if I put it in the fridge I need to feed it once a week, but do I need to keep a breathable top on it or am I okay to use a lid with the jar now? Also, I'm trying to make my own soda. I used 1/4th cup of the ginger bug with Cran-grape by ocean spray in a clean pickle jar with a breathable top. I made sure to avoid buying juice with preservatives with sodium benzoate, metabisulfite, or anything that says for “freshness” as instructed by The Fermentation Adventure but it's been a few days and I don't see any bubbles :(

Always touching
My older two have really taken to the lil guy. He's mostly sleeping through the night, and is the quietest puppy I've ever raised. He's about 80-85% potty pad trained, which isn't bad for 1 week at it. He can't go outside yet as we live in the woods and have lurking owl, merlin, cooper's hawk, and eagle, plus the ground critters that carry lepto. So potty pads are the way until he's fully vaxed.

2024.05.10 23:38 spinmaster68 My Wisdom Tooth Experience

Hopefully my experience (24F) will help someone else, I know I was looking stuff up like crazy (and still am -- I'm 8 days post-op). Good luck to all of you!
Also, I'd just like to let everyone know that usually insurance should cover an oral surgeon, imo a good dentist should refer you to one!

Pre Everything

I've been having teeth issues since 6 months prior, got 2 fillings done by a new dentist (old one out of network) and feel like they may have been done shoddily unfortunately (I could go into detail if anyone is curious), leaving me with cold sensitivity among other things. Felt an occasional ache in my bottom left molar, the first molar (not the one at the end but the second to that) but dentists couldn't find anything, except possibly it could be my wisdom tooth which was impacting and coming straight on to my molar.

First Consult

I came in knowing I wanted local anesthetic; surgeon was willing to accommodate but let me know that my molar was close to my nerve running a 5-7% chance at permanent nerve damage. This would entail permanent numbness in the left corner of my chin and tongue, and loss of taste. He was youngish maybe late 30s to 40s. I'm pretty gullible and receptive but it felt like he was using manipulation tactics on me, like looking me really deeply in my eyes concerned, saying this is what he would do for his own kids. IDK maybe he was really concerned but I doubt. When I was there I didn't think much of it, but I agreed to go for the IV sedation because he said it would be much easier for me and less painful for the nerve, while acknowledging that it could be done with local. Also, I know he could have been totally genuine. There is a lot of corruption and greed in the medical field and it's really hard to tell - best you can do is approach things with doubt.
https://preview.redd.it/gkkobijuwnzc1.jpg?width=2023&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac3ec1946e51698b30e3092ac2370554968bb7dc
I went ahead and scheduled with him but after discussing with my mom I wanted to get a second opinion with her surgeon, he is much older and I thought he'd give me a perspective based on his longer experience. 5-7% chance of permanent nerve damage was pretty high for me considering this is a routine procedure (I know it's surgery but still, it was upsetting). He said my teeth look about middle of the road, and went through his spiel of all the risks, but he didn't mention that I was at an elevated risk for nerve damage and it's very rare. He also went on a long rant of how many surgeons in my area refuse to use local, because they get paid more and it's just easier for them. He doesn't because he's older and paid off his mortgage already, and has no student loans to pay off. It was a bit overboard but I was thankful because he seemed trustworthy. I got all 4 removed.

The Day Of

The surgery was the easy part, just closed my eyes because I'm a baby. If you use local you'll hear everything, you'll see the tools, and you'll cooperate with them as they pull the teeth out your mouth. There will be a lot of pressure, but the upside of local is if you feel any pain (very small) you let them know and they can fix that right away. I can't say it was terrifying or difficult, although I was shaking and maybe a tear left my eye. I was able to drive myself home, although I was terrified of messing up the gauze. Surprising because I'm the kind of person that hyperventilates after getting my blood drawn, bawling while driving. My mom got my prescription which was a week of antibiotics and pain meds (narcotics) just in case. I didn’t end up taking them.
I think I made the mistake of changing my gauze too often, looking back every 35-40 minutes should be enough. I ran out of gauze before they turned slightly pink, I kept gauze in about 5 hours after the surgery and changed every 30 minutes. They were still pretty bloody and wet when I stopped using them. Every 20 minutes I put on a new ice pack on one side of my face, and then the other side for the next 20 minutes according to my instructions. Do this all day until you sleep. Use timers. I chose not to use pain meds and the first day I was in the most amount of pain, I just sat on the couch and watched TikTok and twitter. I was close to taking the meds, but the pain was the bearable kind of aching and bruising, not like OMG my mouth is cut open gross. I was warned that day 3 would be the worst, it was not it was definitely day 1 (good news)! My mom made a smoothie before she left town (mango, banana, almond milk NO SEEDS!!!!), and I drank a mini cup of it to compensate for my antibiotics. You may have to eat more for pain meds; I probably should have eaten more for better nutrition and healing, but I didn't feel like it and wanted to take this chance to lose weight. I slept early, in a 120 degree basically sitting. Woke up feeling better.

Day 2-3

Fear of dry socket, lots of researching. Lots of conflicting info, but apparently being a woman on birth control makes you more susceptible, something about high estrogen levels. Luckily I got mine done on day 2/3 of my period which at first I though was terrible timing but that is the lowest your estrogen gets so I felt lucky. Pain subsiding but definitely still painful. I barely talk, I barely eat. I definitely take my antibiotics!!!! Never skip that! Day 2 I drank the rest of my smoothie, which was more than day 1. Day 3 I at broth and ice cream, my mom bought miso paste to mix into the broth. I sometimes did ice, but I heard heat was better. I ended up not really doing either day. In hindsight I would have iced more. I don't move much. Do your own research, but I wanted to make sure my clots were there. I do not brush my teeth until the night of day 2, and I don't go anywhere close to the molars. My teeth were super gritty and gross. I flossed on day 3, not getting close to molars. I saltwater rinse (just move your head from side to side, no swishing). I think I swelled a little bit on day 3 which is what I was told would be the case, but it really was barely noticeable and I think it’s because I iced all day 1.
I almost forgot but swallowing was a big fear. Everyone knows straws and spitting can cause dry socket because of the pressure it causes in your mouth. Every time I swallowed I felt intense pressure it was terrifying. From my research online no one had said it caused their dry socket, but some techniques I used: 1. Drink water every time you need to swallow but it’s hard. I peed a lot. But it helped relieve the pressure from swallowing, which happened when I overthinked my swallowing. 2. Use your tongue to create a suction on the roof of your mouth with your teeth as a border. That should isolate the pressure to the top kind of. I saw that in a Reddit comment. 3. Focus on swallowing near the back of your throat, in your gullet area down your neck. It’s deeper. 4. Go to sleep. First, you won’t overthink your swallowing. Second, you swallow 3 times an hour in your sleep as opposed to 1 time a minute awake, though for me it was more like every 20 seconds bc I was so scared and overthinking it.
I employed these swallowing techniques till day 5/6. At that point the risk of dry socket mostly would have passed. And I was going to my follow up the next few days anyway.

Day 4-8

I was hella stressing about dry sockets. Was really diligent about my saltwater rinses after every meal, still only eating smoothies, broth, and ice cream. I did not eat very much during this whole recovery, maybe 2 small meals a day consisting of broth or smoothie, then desert for the calories. When I brushed on day 4 a bit of goopy blood came out on my toothbrush which freaked me out, doesn't seem to have caused a problem. I can only open my mouth to fit 1.5 fingers still. Talking is much easier, can go on walks, have mobility.
My only issue is that right now I'm getting occasional 30 second aches in my teeth located in the molars in both sides and one top side. This was my issue prior to my extraction so I'm worried it hasn't been fixed. They're not too painful, just worrying and distracting. I also can't eat solids, it is super hard for me and hurts my molars. I'm also worried about getting food stuck. I was given a syringe during my followup on day 7 but I'm not sure if I'm using it correctly, so I'd rather keep eating liquids till I'm totally healed anyway. I did try some noodles and dumpling but it was way too much effort and I pretty much swallowed the pieces whole anyway.
Day 10: up until this point, I couldn’t close my mouth fully even though I felt pretty good. My mouth felt lopsided bc one side of my teeth was touching and I felt pressure from that, and couldn’t touch the other side of my teeth if that made sense. I think there was also a lot of plaque or gritty buildup, so by day 10 I felt comfortable enough to scrub really hard to get rid of the buildup and it actually helped. I can closed my mouth better now, probably because of less pressure pain. I also kind of ate a pasta noodle, it was way to much effort and even though it didn’t hurt to chew on my right (non impacted) side, the noodle pieces went everywhere in the corners of my mouth and I was paranoid it would go into my gum holes (I still can’t tell if I have gum holes yet, my clots are still there but I feel like they’re drying), and I’m not good at using the syringe. With a lot of effort I was able to get the pieces out, but I will just wait until week 2 before eating solids. From what I’ve researched, other paranoid people start eating slowly by then haha. I’m still aching occasionally, but I’m taking vitamin b12 (liquid, usually for vegetarians, yummy) bc I’ve heard vitamin b is good for healing nerves.
if you work i would say day 5 you should be good to return.
If anyone has any experience with a minor toothache pain that caused you to get your wisdom teeth removed, please let me know how it went; if that solved the issue, or if it was something else, or if you had to wait a couple weeks for the nerve to heal?
I'm not sure what else to include, but good luck to everyone on their recovery! I might edit with updates.

Cooper's Hawk
I took a picture of this Cooper’s Hawk while walking along a trail. Used a Nikon camera for this photo. I always like it when I am able to photograph birds of prey.
