I will preface my question announcing I may not be "with it" due to my 41 years of age. Something I noticed maybe in my early 30's is the influence of anime on not only media, but social culture.
I have watched two animes in my life due to curiosity and peer pressure; Claymore and Deathnote.
There appears to be another "side" to anime and I while I'm not opposed to anything that brings anybody joy without causing harm to others, I am just not into that.
I understand though that it's fully mainstream now, so if I just say "hey guys, enjoy your stuff to your hearts content, but can we not draw everything as a thirsting anime girl constantly on twitch, facebook, reddit etc...? It makes this hobby community look weirder than it is" I get absolutely shit on, just like this post might.
I don't post 40k in knitting communities, sports conversations, or any other discourse community, so I guess I just don't understand why anime is all over most of my interests no matter what it is.
Am I just a radical? A curmudgeon? Why does this bother me?

Missouri, in which the two states and several individuals claim that federal officials violated the First Amendment in their efforts to “help” social media companies combat mis- and disinformation about COVID-19 and other matters… This is one of several landmark social media cases the Court is hearing this term, including Lindke v. Freed and O’Connor-Ratcliff v. Garnier, in which they will decide if and when government officials may block private citizens from commenting on their personal social media accounts… Former national security official and current Harvard Law lecturer, Timothy Edgar ’97, believes that both the states and the federal government have valid arguments, and argues that the justices should channel the spirit of that famous 18th century publisher and postmaster, Benjamin Franklin, who was a proponent of both neutrality and rational discourse… Timothy Edgar: Missouri among other states and individuals are arguing that the Biden administration’s involvement in trying to suppress COVID-19 misinformation, especially about vaccines, crossed the line from being public health education to being censorship, by proxy. They argue that the administration was making very aggressive, specific suggestions to those social media companies, either to remove or to downgrade certain kinds of posts, and that by doing that, they transformed the private decisions that those companies made — principally Facebook and Twitter, now X — into public decisions, and that would amount to censorship. The federal government says this was a voluntary, cooperative effort between social media and the government to combat misinformation and improve public health. They also argue that the government has long engaged in public health education and that even if the government expresses its views bluntly, it has a responsibility to express those views. The First Amendment and concerns about censorship, they say, don’t prevent the government from expressing an opinion about what information is or isn’t truthful when it comes to public health…” My opinion is that they’re both right and that we need to get some clarity from the courts about where that line is between engagement and public health… In his early days, Franklin was a printer in Philadelphia and a postmaster. When he was criticized by a number of the citizens of Philadelphia for publishing a controversial essay, Franklin wrote a famous response called “An Apology for Printers,” which is a defense of the idea that printers should be neutral. Here’s the quote: “Printers are educated in the Belief, that when Men differ in Opinion, both Sides ought equally to have the Advantage of being heard by the Publick; and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter: Hence they chearfully serve all contending Writers that pay them well, without regarding on which side they are of the Question in Dispute.” Franklin was defending the idea that there’s a role for service providers — publishers, printers, platforms — to share information and arguing that, if we say that they must agree with everything that’s on their service, then we cut off debate. It is an argument grounded in an enlightenment faith in the idea of rational discourse. Of course, it doesn’t answer the question of whether we should print literally everything — which Franklin did not believe — or when and how platforms should moderate content. But it embodies a certain faith in the marketplace of ideas. Franklin is making two arguments in his essay. One is the enlightenment idea of rational debate: that the truth will win out. But it also has this very pragmatic point, which is that neutrality is good for business. Printers were natural monopolies in a way that social media platforms can be as well…to serve the public, you need a platform — a printing shop and now a digital platform — that maintains some level of neutrality in order to have a democratic system of government… When the government communicates with distributors of information, in that case, book publishers, if they do it in a way that makes those businesses feel like they have no choice but to comply, then those actions will be seen as government actions. And they will be seen as a form of censorship that is prohibited by the First Amendment unless there’s some legal basis for censorship… You can look at this example from Franklin’s life and see some of both sides of what the justices will be deciding in this case. The platform should be neutral. In general, they should aspire to further public debate and that, even when they think something they allow to remain posted to the platform is wrong, they should have some faith in rational discourse. But there is a line, and the platforms or the printers can draw that line where they choose... The government has a responsibility to inform the public and to engage with digital platforms. They may even criticize digital platforms if they feel that their moderation decisions are being driven by private profits at the expense of the public interest…The government can make rational arguments. What it cannot do is to invoke its power — even implicitly — in a way that makes platforms feel they have no good option but to do what the government says… The government has an important role and responsibility here to be engaging with private platforms, and not just on public health, but on issues of terrorism, and extremism and violence, on issues of taking down illegal content like child sexual abuse material. When there are foreign, state sponsored disinformation campaigns, the government is uniquely positioned to let the platforms know about them. So, they need to be involved with Facebook, X, Google, YouTube, all the big social media companies… …there’s a difference between X and Facebook and the New York Times. Platforms make content moderation decisions. The New York Times makes editorial decisions. Both are protected by the First Amendment, but they are different decisions, and different considerations apply when deciding when government pressure crosses the line. And this gets back to our discussion of Benjamin Franklin. In the social media space, content moderation may deprive a speaker of the practical ability to have access to digital public square... |

So I just got a message on Instagram that I had only encountered once before on Facebook. This person was asking if I had art commissions open. Now I rarely use my Instagram so, that's already a red flag. Once I asked what they're looking for, they said "Good" with a blushing emote and then asked me to draw 2 pictures of their daughter with an offer of $600. And even sent 3 pictures of their kid. Almost word for word, this is the same from the Facebook incident. Only difference is, that person asked for artwork of their dog. And when I told the person on Facebook I wasn't confident in my art skills to open up commissions at the time, they kept insisting on it. kept offering it. And my mind is telling me the exact same thing is gonna happen if I decline and if I accept, but say "You gotta pay upfront" I'm either gonna be scammed, blocked, or left on read. Anyone else encounter this before and can confirm or deny this?

Hello everyone, I Will be finishing in 2 years, and during weekends or after working hours ( during my private time), I am into cosplay. I draw and do other stuff but with everything else my face is hidden. I go to conventions in cosplay and last convention I spotted one of my students from my TA duties there . She didn’t recognize me but definitely stared and had her doubts. On another incident, today My PI told one of my colleagues that she should stop uploading her normal clothes casual pics to SNS as it is unprofessional . In my case, i do enjoy uploading and posing as the character i am acting as but do it all from a side account that not a single person in our lab knows about. Some of my anime circle know but they’re pretty chill about it . Otherwise I made the side account with another email and linked it to a facebook with another name and don’t follow myself or my colleagues from it to avoid suspicion. I have always loved portraying different characters ( nothing being revealing in the outfits tho) and usually i am quite reserved and out of the spotlight but this was for a very long time , “ my only spotlight”.

Usually, the complainant will assume that there is an entrenched friend group operating for their own benefit, and sometimes it is claimed that some political disagreement or misunderstanding has rendered a member persona non grata. This has troubled me, but I have also assumed that there was little I could do. For one, it may be that the complaints came from genuinely undesirable candidates or, even if not, it was possible that the judgment of the various groups were guided by a system that was effective in weeding out most of the worst candidates most of the time, with some candidates being unintentionally wrongly disregarded, and maybe that is the best any of them can hope to do. In any case, I felt there was little I could do about it. For the good of the organization I intentionally put myself at a distance from our ministry and congregations, giving them the space to manage their activities themselves.
That distancing myself from the ministry and congregations could be for the overall good of the organization might be a counter-intuitive claim to some, but I arrived at that position after a history of failed local chapters and internal melt-downs that typically result in people decrying me personally, regardless of how little interaction with me they may have actually had. Regardless of what the situation may have actually been, it was always more attention-grabbing to claim that any problems were the result of some type of background personal battle with me. Though never having had contact with me at all never really prevented anybody from going this route, I assumed that if structurally it was all but certain that they needn’t have my permission to operate, and did not take instructions from me at all, at least internally people would be able to better recognize a lying opportunist making false claims, and lying opportunists making false claims would see less opportunity in creating false narratives at the expense of the organization. Committees of peers operating under pre-established organizational guidelines with my general non-intervention as known policy seemed the best way to go. In any case, I already have enough responsibilities that I attend to in service to The Satanic Temple, and it is hardly plausible that I take on more. And it is, I can say in complete confidence that I am not merely expressing a failure of nerves, a high-stress job. I do not think many people would do the work I do the way I do it. I do it because I believe in our cause, I believe in the value and values of Satanism, and I believe that efforts to advance theocratic interests in the United States and elsewhere pose an existential threat to democracy. Our lawsuits, tracking of legislation, strategy, structure, messaging, media, protocols, advocacy, testimony, etc, are all things I have a first-hand role in (along with a small team or teams), and it is often difficult for me to find the time to create the content for which I actually get paid. The ministry does not pay me, nor do we pay it. Ordained ministers have the potential to profit from their ordination by way of ministerial work, such as weddings and funerals, but beyond paying a nominal fee for ordination coursework, there is no buy-in and there are no dues or start-up fees.
The fact is that our ability to finance our projects waxes and wanes based upon our presence in the media, public support for our lawsuits, campaigns, and various publicly-facing efforts that drive support. Our ministry, and other branches of The Satanic Temple, have had their own internal schisms and breakdowns through time that are indicative of our polarized times, and not entirely unexpected in any social environment. However, somewhere along the line a narrative took hold among some: the narrative that myself, and the small team that composes the Executive Ministry, are not working on behalf of the organization while maintaining the relative autonomy of ministry and congregations, but that we are irrelevant to The Satanic Temple overall. Not only are we irrelevant, but counter-productive, preventing them from doing the things that they think The Satanic Temple should really be doing, almost always in reference to demands that we allow absolute political positions in our name, or allow them to sell merchandise bearing our name and/or imagery. These are not new standards, but there often seem to be fresh complaints.
This has been an irritating fact for some time, but again felt as though it was something I could do little about. People like to speak ill of the boss, apparently, even when that “boss” is making zero demands, and I assumed they might be mortified to learn just how often I actually do see them denigrating me and misrepresenting my work. And the sad fact is that it is impossible to not feel, to some degree, held hostage in an environment where any negative exchange is certain to be placed online, without context, with some constructed whistleblower narrative that claims to show my true colors, included with various accusations about my nefarious ways. But I have had a suspicion that a prevalent mood of hostility against the organization from within the organization was creating broader counter-productive social dynamics that go beyond disparaging Executive Ministry. Despite a clear majority of dedicated and reasonable ministers, disagreements between ministers amongst themselves or with other membership have sometimes revealed disregard for any sense of professional ministerial conduct, an unwillingness to engage in open non-judgmental dialogue or act as a judicious mediator, as one might hope a minister for any religion might. Over the past year, people — good people — have left feeling ostracized, attacked, and even betrayed by this behavior. In the meantime, still without intervention from myself or the rest of Executive Ministry, open contempt against us has grown, with some congregations taking to the practice placing bizarre disclaimers on their public-facing materials inappropriately advising that they are somehow not affiliated with the global organization. It seems to have all the makings of another schism, the likes of which people seem to work themselves up into regardless of the circumstances: if we intervene in any way and try to direct people’s work, the wannabe rebels cry that we are exercising inappropriate authority, we leave them to manage their affairs, they stir revolt against our somehow oppressive irrelevance.
But while I had grown despondent in thinking that such dynamics were an unfortunate expression of human nature, and that there was no point risking further damage by trying to mitigate an uncontrollable fire, growing silent internal support has let me know that they see the toxic dynamics, disagree with the positions propagated by the aimless malcontents, and wish to see changes that will open new avenues for participation. Some time ago, we began considering structural models to unify the Executive Ministry with the ministry, so that they are in collaboration with us. All of this is a slow process with minimal personnel and resources. In the meantime, we have seen politicians attempt to outlaw Satanism, ban The Satanic Temple specifically from public accommodations, we have been navigating threats to our safety, and experienced a bombing attempt upon our headquarters. In all that time, the people who habitually denigrate me and the Executive Ministry never seem to have changed their focus from drawing internal suspicion toward us and our worth to confronting the very real existential threats we face on the outside. The past number of months have been harrowing, and I have found myself having to choose between one high-priority item or another equal high-priority item at a time. Last week I had to miss going to court for our oral arguments in order to attend a meeting with the FBI. In consultation with security analysts, I am overhauling some aspects of my life in ways that are less than convenient, and all the while I am compelled to create content often enough to keep paying subscribers.
It was against this backdrop that I was sent a series of screenshots the other day of a group of our ministers complaining on Facebook. A minister had posted a series of memes generally conveying my perceived worthlessness and ineptitude, mostly decrying the fact that we canceled SatanCon this year. The same people who seem to have nothing to say when politicians openly try to render our religious practice and expression illegal, the same people who have nothing to say when somebody tries to kill us in our headquarters, have something to complain about when we fail to finance and organize our annual gathering for them. Further, I was mocked for apparently doing nothing more with my time than posting on Patreon while they congratulated themselves for neither subscribing to nor reading my work. A bizarre and delusional dialogue unfolded where it was suggested (again) that they have done all the work that is attributed to me. There was chatter about how they had “outgrown” TST. To be clear, this was a group consisting, in part, of TST ministers. Ministers, representatives of The Satanic Temple, on Facebook, presenting themselves this way. I sent an angry email to the minister responsible.
He had no apology in his reply. I fired him. I am not sorry about that. My apology is to those who have suffered in this toxic environment waiting far too long for action to be taken. You are heard, and we are going to build a better, unified TST.
There are, of course, others in TST who are outraged by my audacity in this. So far I have seen none of them consider that their conduct may have been unprofessional, counterproductive, or even worthy of mention. Some people have resigned.

Our lawsuits, tracking of legislation, strategy, structure, messaging, media, protocols, advocacy, testimony, etc, are all things I have a first-hand role in (along with a small team or teams), and it is often difficult for me to find the time to create the content for which I actually get paid. The ministry does not pay me, nor do we pay it. Ordained ministers have the potential to profit from their ordination by way of ministerial work, such as weddings and funerals, but beyond paying a nominal fee for ordination coursework, there is no buy-in and there are no dues or start-up fees.
The fact is that our ability to finance our projects waxes and wanes based upon our presence in the media, public support for our lawsuits, campaigns, and various publicly-facing efforts that drive support. Our ministry, and other branches of The Satanic Temple, have had their own internal schisms and breakdowns through time that are indicative of our polarized times, and not entirely unexpected in any social environment. However, somewhere along the line a narrative took hold among some: the narrative that myself, and the small team that composes the Executive Ministry, are not working on behalf of the organization while maintaining the relative autonomy of ministry and congregations, but that we are irrelevant to The Satanic Temple overall. Not only are we irrelevant, but counter-productive, preventing them from doing the things that they think The Satanic Temple should really be doing, almost always in reference to demands that we allow absolute political positions in our name, or allow them to sell merchandise bearing our name and/or imagery. These are not new standards, but there often seem to be fresh complaints.
This has been an irritating fact for some time, but again felt as though it was something I could do little about. People like to speak ill of the boss, apparently, even when that “boss” is making zero demands, and I assumed they might be mortified to learn just how often I actually do see them denigrating me and misrepresenting my work. And the sad fact is that it is impossible to not feel, to some degree, held hostage in an environment where any negative exchange is certain to be placed online, without context, with some constructed whistleblower narrative that claims to show my true colors, included with various accusations about my nefarious ways. But I have had a suspicion that a prevalent mood of hostility against the organization from within the organization was creating broader counter-productive social dynamics that go beyond disparaging Executive Ministry. Despite a clear majority of dedicated and reasonable ministers, disagreements between ministers amongst themselves or with other membership have sometimes revealed disregard for any sense of professional ministerial conduct, an unwillingness to engage in open non-judgmental dialogue or act as a judicious mediator, as one might hope a minister for any religion might. Over the past year, people — good people — have left feeling ostracized, attacked, and even betrayed by this behavior. In the meantime, still without intervention from myself or the rest of Executive Ministry, open contempt against us has grown, with some congregations taking to the practice placing bizarre disclaimers on their public-facing materials inappropriately advising that they are somehow not affiliated with the global organization. It seems to have all the makings of another schism, the likes of which people seem to work themselves up into regardless of the circumstances: if we intervene in any way and try to direct people’s work, the wannabe rebels cry that we are exercising inappropriate authority, we leave them to manage their affairs, they stir revolt against our somehow oppressive irrelevance.
But while I had grown despondent in thinking that such dynamics were an unfortunate expression of human nature, and that there was no point risking further damage by trying to mitigate an uncontrollable fire, growing silent internal support has let me know that they see the toxic dynamics, disagree with the positions propagated by the aimless malcontents, and wish to see changes that will open new avenues for participation. Some time ago, we began considering structural models to unify the Executive Ministry with the ministry, so that they are in collaboration with us. All of this is a slow process with minimal personnel and resources. In the meantime, we have seen politicians attempt to outlaw Satanism, ban The Satanic Temple specifically from public accommodations, we have been navigating threats to our safety, and experienced a bombing attempt upon our headquarters. In all that time, the people who habitually denigrate me and the Executive Ministry never seem to have changed their focus from drawing internal suspicion toward us and our worth to confronting the very real existential threats we face on the outside. The past number of months have been harrowing, and I have found myself having to choose between one high-priority item or another equal high-priority item at a time. Last week I had to miss going to court for our oral arguments in order to attend a meeting with the FBI. In consultation with security analysts, I am overhauling some aspects of my life in ways that are less than convenient, and all the while I am compelled to create content often enough to keep paying subscribers.
It was against this backdrop that I was sent a series of screenshots the other day of a group of our ministers complaining on Facebook. A minister had posted a series of memes generally conveying my perceived worthlessness and ineptitude, mostly decrying the fact that we canceled SatanCon this year. The same people who seem to have nothing to say when politicians openly try to render our religious practice and expression illegal, the same people who have nothing to say when somebody tries to kill us in our headquarters, have something to complain about when we fail to finance and organize our annual gathering for them. Further, I was mocked for apparently doing nothing more with my time than posting on Patreon while they congratulated themselves for neither subscribing to nor reading my work. A bizarre and delusional dialogue unfolded where it was suggested (again) that they have done all the work that is attributed to me. There was chatter about how they had “outgrown” TST. To be clear, this was a group consisting, in part, of TST ministers. Ministers, representatives of The Satanic Temple, on Facebook, presenting themselves this way. I sent an angry email to the minister responsible.
He had no apology in his reply. I fired him. I am not sorry about that. My apology is to those who have suffered in this toxic environment waiting far too long for action to be taken. You are heard, and we are going to build a better, unified TST.
There are, of course, others in TST who are outraged by my audacity in this. So far I have seen none of them consider that their conduct may have been unprofessional, counterproductive, or even worthy of mention. Some people have resigned.

Those for whom it is impossible to work with TST without disparaging other branches of the organization, the organization as a whole (“TST Global”), or individuals in the organization, it is not for them. There are a lot of people already working with us and willing to work with us, understand the gravity of this moment in the battle against theocracy, and wish to help and support us in our mission. It’s been almost 2 months since I had to have contact with my nex (to get my chihuahua back) Before that it was 5 years together, 2 of them married, before I was discarded and ended up in the psych unit. Things have gotten easier, day by day, but today for some reason, is hard. I feel alone. I picture my nex getting all the attention she seeks because she’s a mom (who cares more about her image than she does her own child). I picture her new supply showering her with compliments and love. I picture her 9 year old daughter (who I had a bond with, and was a loving step dad towards) being alone in her room, drawing, doing art, while mom is having a grand old time. And here I sit, without my former family, feeling sorry for myself in a new town, alone. Just my dog and me. I shut down all my social media, so I picture my nex and all my friends (and all my former friends) having a great celebratory weekend and posting their awesome day on Facebook. I sit here ruminating and creating scenarios that I have no proof of , happening. I wish nighttime would arrive, so I can sleep the rest of this loneliness away. I have recently started a gardening business. I’ve joined three local facebook groups and make a post as per their guidelines. They draw no attention, well that’s a lie - I did get one quote when I posted free labour, with a nominal fee of £5 to cover petrol costs. Unfortunately, it was quite a large job, so quoted higher, therefore didn’t get the job. Move forward two weeks, I now have a Facebook page, google business profile and a website https://firstlightlawns.co.uk . I don’t have the budget for expensive marketing, so need creative ways of publishing my business for less. Facebook ads are an option but I’m not sure it’s right thing to do. What are your thoughts? The snap I used has absolutely zero ties to any of my socials and the pictures I sent draw zero results when image searching on Google.
