2024.05.14 05:33 Tiao-torresmo Was Bill Clinton the best president for economy in the US history for you guys?

Looking back at Bill Clinton's presidency from 1993 to 2001, it’s often seen as a golden age for the U.S. economy. Here’s why:
  1. Balanced Budgets: For several years, the U.S. government actually spent less than it collected (very rare in the history, hahaha). The US had surpluses from 1998 to 2001, something that hadn’t happened since 1969.
  2. Strong Growth: The economy grew at a healthy rate, driven by the rise of the internet and tech industries, which led to more jobs and higher productivity.
  3. Low Unemployment: in 1992 was 7.5%, he dropped to 6.9% in 1993, and keeped around 4% in 1997 all the way to 2001.
  4. Stable Inflation: Inflation was low and stable, helping keep the cost of living manageable while wages were rising. 1993: 3.26%; 1994: 2.52%; 1995: 2.80%; 1996: 2.73%; 1997: 3.04%; 1998: 1.57%; 1999: 1.67%; 2000: 2.74%; 2001: 3.73%
  5. Stock Market Boom: The stock market soared, reflecting strong investor confidence and economic optimism. Also, the tech companies starting their business in that time.
What is your opinion about the Bill Clinton years? Was he the best president for the US economy?

2024.05.14 05:22 dassix1 What vehicle should I purchase for under $40k?

Wife currently has a 2017 Honda Pilot base model. It's a little large and lacks features (hence the base model). Looking for something perhaps a little smaller, a sedan or crossover, etc. that is under $40k (can be under or over after taxes, etc. doesn't matter) and either new or very low miles.
Open to a hybrid, but no full plugin-EV. Due to age of vehicle and how my wife drives, the Pilot is getting 18mpg and she puts on about 15k miles per year commuting (no highways). So if we could get something with much better MPG, could perhaps go higher than $40k at least to rationalize it.
Size: Something 4 people can comfortable fit in and no larger than a Pilot (which she thinks is already a little too large slightly)
Needs:
Nice to haves:
I appreciate any suggestions! I don't keep up on cars much anymore and all the various trim levels has my head spinning. Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to respond in a timely manner.

2024.05.14 05:20 JoshuaSingh11 Scientific studies on mercury and adverse effects

  1. A Cross-Sectional Study of Blood Ethylmercury Levels and Cognitive Decline Among Older Adults and the Elderly in the United States
    • "Significantly increased risks for lower animal fluency test (odds ratio (OR) = 13.652, p = 0.0029) and CERAD W-L delayed recall test (OR = 6.401, p = 0.0433) scores were observed among the higher ethyl-Hg exposure group as compared to the lower ethyl-Hg exposure group. This study supports the hypothesis that increased ethyl-Hg exposure is associated with significant cognitive decline in older adult and elderly Americans."
  2. Thimerosal-Derived Ethylmercury Is a Mitochondrial Toxin in Human Astrocytes: Possible Role of Fenton Chemistry in the Oxidation and Breakage of mtDNA
    • "Ethylmercury causes a 50% collapse in membrane potential in astrocytes at 1 hour. Accompanying this collapse in membrane potential we observe a significant increase in the levels of various ROS. The internal mitochondrial steady state level of superoxide increases by 70% in treated cells and is matched by an increase in cellular hydrazine reactive carbonyls. Using H2DCF-AM we observe a 200% increase in steady state production of reactive oxidants, which from deconvolution we know to be mitochondrially generated (Figure 2). Mitochondrial DNA, and not nuclear DNA, is far more vulnerable to ethylmercury-induced damage. We observe a 240% increase in the levels of mitochondrial DNA breaks, a 300% increase in 3′OH DNA nicks and 460% increase in the levels of oxidized bases/apurinic or apyrimidinic sites"
    • "At higher concentrations (>7.2 μM Thimerosal) a loss of mitochondrial signal and of DCF is observed."
  3. The relationship between mercury and autism: A comprehensive review and discussion
    • "This review found 91 studies that examine the potential relationship between mercury and ASD from 1999 to February 2016. Of these studies, the vast majority (74%) suggest that mercury is a risk factor for ASD, revealing both direct and indirect effects. The preponderance of the evidence indicates that mercury exposure is causal and/or contributory in ASD."
  4. Examining the evidence that ethylmercury crosses the blood-brain barrier
    • "22 studies from 1971 to 2019 show that exposure to ethylmercury-containing compounds (intravenously, intraperitoneally, topically, subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intranasally administered) results in accumulation of mercury in the brain. In total, these studies indicate that ethylmercury-containing compounds and Thimerosal readily cross the BBB, convert, for the most part, to highly toxic inorganic mercury-containing compounds, which significantly and persistently bind to tissues in the brain, even in the absence of concurrent detectable blood mercury levels."
  5. Comparison of blood and brain mercury levels in infant monkeys exposed to methylmercury or vaccines containing thimerosal
    • "These studies indicate that ethylmercury-containing compounds and Thimerosal readily cross the BBB, convert, for the most part, to highly toxic inorganic mercury-containing compounds, which significantly and persistently bind to tissues in the brain, even in the absence of concurrent detectable blood mercury levels."
    • "The results indicate that MeHg is not a suitable reference for risk assessment from exposure to thimerosal-derived Hg. Knowledge of the toxicokinetics and developmental toxicity of thimerosal is needed to afford a meaningful assessment of the developmental effects of thimerosal-containing vaccines."
    • "The average concentration of inorganic Hg did not change across the 28 days of washout and was approximately 16 ng/mL (Figure 7). This level of inorganic Hg represented 21–86% of the total Hg in the brain (mean ± SE, 70 ± 4%), depending on the sacrifice time. These values are considerably higher than the inorganic fraction observed in the brain of MeHg monkeys (6–10%)."
    • "Absolute inorganic Hg concentrations in the brains of the thimerosal-exposed monkeys were approximately twice that of the MeHg monkeys."
  6. Exposure to Inorganic Mercury Causes Oxidative Stress, Cell Death, and Functional Deficits in the Motor Cortex
    • "It was observed that chronic exposure to inorganic mercury caused a decrease in balance and fine motor coordination, formation of mercury deposits and oxidative stress verified by the increase of lipoperoxidation and nitrite concentration and a decrease of the total antioxidant capacity. In addition, we found that this model of exposure to inorganic mercury caused cell death by cytotoxicity and induction of apoptosis with a decreased number of neurons and astrocytes in the motor cortex. Our results provide evidence that exposure to inorganic mercury in low doses, even in spite of its poor ability to cross biological barriers, is still capable of inducing motor deficits, cell death by cytotoxicity and apoptosis, and oxidative stress in the motor cortex of adult rats."
  7. The retention time of inorganic mercury in the brain--a systematic review of the evidence
    • "Estimates from modelling studies appear sensitive to model assumptions, however predications based on a long half-life (27.4 years) are consistent with autopsy findings. In summary, shorter estimates of half-life are not supported by evidence from animal studies, human case studies, or modelling studies based on appropriate assumptions. Evidence from such studies point to a half-life of inorganic mercury in human brains of several years to several decades. This finding carries important implications for pharmcokinetic modelling of mercury and potentially for the regulatory toxicology of mercury."
  8. Astrocytes in the central nervous system and their functions in health and disease: A review
    • "Because astrocytes contain metal-binding proteins such as metallothionein, they are also involved in the uptake and sequestration of some heavy metals."
  9. Proximal tubular transport of Metallothionein-Mercury complexes and protection against nephrotoxicity
    • "MT has a very high affinity for Hg; thus, mercuric ions that are not already bound to MT may bind to MT within the cytoplasm to form large Hg-MT complexes that may be retained in the cell. This will be particularly true in segments of proximal tubules that have higher levels of MT, i.e., cortical proximal tubules. MT is capable of binding 6–11 molecules of Hg (He et al., 2021); thus, it is logical that cells and tissues with higher levels of MT will accumulate more Hg."

2024.05.14 04:22 chooseyourwords49 Mini's partnership with Great Wall Motors and 'Straight-to-Market' Strategy, what are the reasons and impact on our beloved Minis?

I'm reposting this as it was edited by AI to be a bit more grammatically correct and "editorial" sounding, and came out completely wrong, my apologies - my writing generally sucks. The below content is important to me, so I'm looking for serious reflection, debate if anyone is interested. Thanks.
There's obviously been some discord with the new Mini line-up pitting Mini loyal purists against the fresher minded Mini lovers who prefer the new styling. We're all entitled to our opinions and that's okay, I'm not here to convince anyone of one trend or styling over the other. But we should be looking at the reasons of why Mini has made these style/business choices. I feel that some of these reasons are largely being ignored by some fans, being accepted as "the new trend, accept it", versus the 'straight-to-market', market cap gaining, cutting costs to get there, loss of prestige, quality of materials, and loyalty be damned - as I and others see it.
I obviously sit on the side of mostly disliking this new generation not because of their style choices (while ugly) but their decision to sacrifice quality in order to gain market cap, and their decision to partner with Great Wall Motors and produce an awful end-product out of China that mostly mimics the likes of the South East Asian market.
The Asian market isn't so much the problem, it's the en mass production of said materials, "recycled", "faux", and low quality plastics that are being used in their vehicles. A lot of people have said "this is the trend" and where all mass marketed cars are heading. But I think Mini's decision to partner with Great Wall Motors and produce the car out of China has a huge impact on their intention to go straight-to-market, cost cutting, streamlined parts, and therefore (in my opinion) loss of quality, and diminished/minimalist styling and impact on general design.
For example, I've said this in other places, but Great Wall Motor's 2023 Ora EV is a near clone of the Mini Cooper EV of which is made out of the same factory as the Ora. This partnership started in late 2017, early 2018 and didn't just happen yesterday. If you see the URL's below of the Ora you can see that they're pretty much clones, the round headlines, "unique" colorful interior, faux leather, low quality plastics, and minimalist approach.
Sorry for the length of this, but I'd love a friendly discussion about the above because it seems to be that BMW/Mini along with GWM are really just trying to gain as many customers as they can while doing it from a straight-to-market, cost-cutting designs, while largely impacting the former prestige and "luxury" feel our beloved Minis once had. What do you think?

HELP! 1981 CB125S idle/throttle issue, high RPM with intermittent rev issues. Video to demonstrate issue. I am also leaving a description in the reddit comments. Thanks!
Hey everyone, I just picked up this 1981 CB125S, and have begun doing a little bit of work to it. It has mostly original parts, other than the obvious that I have changed out over the past few days. It was a barn find, with only 738 km on it.
I stripped and cleaned the carb, and have brand new 87 octane gas in the new tank. Lines are clean and clear. Fuel/air ratio has been set to a nice comfortable idle, but it only reaches this randomly once it has really warmed up, and the choke it fully off.
Sometimes, the bike won't come down to a normal rom idle after starting, sometimes it will. Sometimes it doesn't come down at all. If I touch the throttle while it is as a comfortable idle, it may bot come back down for se ones, or ever after releasing the throttle. But the throttle cable isn't stuck, isn't pinched, isn't bent, isn't rusted, and doesn't change when it wiggle the cable anywhere.
The problem existed before I started messing around with it, and was actually worse. The bike wouldn't run unless it was at full choke. I have since resolved this, and it now runs, just at a high rpm, unless it feels like giving me a low idle rpm when it feels like it. The problem also existed before I swapped out the air box for a pod filter for this who may mention it.
The throttle cable isn't bent, and it isn't pinched anywhere. It doesn't matter if I wiggle it, or tug on it, and will come down in RPMs for idle when it wants.
Any help, suggestions, comments?

2024.05.14 04:13 Emrald2007 Why is the resonator on a g37 so prominent?

I was noticing, videos of g37 with straight pipes or muffler+resonator deleted sound horrible and extremely loud. However, a muffler delete alone isn’t very loud at all and imo sounds pretty good being low and unnoticeable at cruising and idle but loud at high rpm’s for revving and accelerating. The real question is, why is it that the resonator alone makes such a huge difference between the simpleness of a muffler delete and the horrible trumpetness of a straight pipe? Resonators are only supposed to be in the exhaust to remove annoying tones and rasp, I don’t understand why they play such a big role in sound difference for infiniti’s.

SoCal HVAC advice
Hello. I understand very little about home hvac but understand auto hvac. I just had some hvac work done to my home on Thursday and the AC went out on Saturday again. Does the price and repairs sounds right? Currently I’m at $747 and will be added $690 after this repair in Socal.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Below are the notes that were on the invoice I received
Ignition module Limit switches 2 year warranty Arrive to system did see that unit was shutting off and would have the system for the outside staying on. Did check all electrical components and saw that everything is checking out okay. Did see that unit was older. Did let the owner know about the systems. Did also see the dirt and dust on the blower motor. Did recommend on getting a few things on the system to pro long the system. Customer agreed on just getting the repairs done and wants to check on the HOA and see what they can help him with on replacement. Once done with repairs did see that unit was having a low charge to the system and is having a leak on the system did let know and most of the electrical componets on the condensing unit, most of the parts will go out. Will happen this summer on it breaking down. Customer will follow up with me on what’s the next step for the system.

2024.05.14 03:28 da-noob-man Why does my 2022 G14 constantly hovers around 96C when playing a demanding game like Helldivers?

Hi guys, I just intalled helldivers this weekend (this game is so fun lmfao).
However when I play on relatively low settings (mostly low and some mediums), I notice that although I get around 60-80 framerate, but my CPU will head to 96C and stay there a long with my GPU hovering around 87-90.
I'm currently using G-Helper with standard dGPU enabled and balanced power mode and disabled CPU boost with default power limits and undervolting (I have been too lazy to undervolt, but I think this might be the time).
With fan curves that jump to maximum 6000 RPM at 80C. I even tried the solution here
https://www.reddit.com/ZephyrusG14/comments/gho535/important_update_to_properly_disable_boosting/
But I think its just the CPU boost option in GHelper. I also have my laptop on a stand with a 50 degree, however I really don't want to buy a laptop cooler, I even tried rigging up a fan and having it point upwards into my computer.
Is the 96C accurate and sustainable long term for my computer? I already put 10 hours of helldivers in merely 2 days and I think the temperature is going to damage my CPU.
Is it because I'm not undervolting or another issue?

Knocking noise on uneven/ bumpy road or when turning at slow speed from parking
Hi! Pls help a girl driver here. My mazda 2 demio has been making clunking/ratting noise when going over rough roads or sometimes when turning wheel at low speed from parking.
Initially thought it was the strut mount as it sounded the same when my rear shock mount was broken.
IMy mechanic recently already replaced my cv joints, front shock absorbers and strut mounts and he said that the remaining part to replace is engine mounts. The vibration has gotten strong that my phone holder vibrates when accelerating.
Im not fully sure but I think the noise comes off the driver side inside the engine bay. Does bad motor mount cause noise like this?
Thank you in advance to those who will answer.

2024.05.14 03:19 LeaveAggravating545 Need some help!

2014 Jetta TDI
So my wife hit a transition from road to driveway pretty hard it some how the radiator fan broke on the right side and got into one of the wiring harnesses a bit and I'm not 100% sure if this is all related to the wiring harness but now the engine is shaking like crazy and practically shuts itself off while idling and when you shut it off it keeps shaking like crazy for a couple seconds. Almost feels like the motor wants to jump out of the hood lol
She said after she did that it was fine on the highway “she drove 1.5hrs after” but at low RPM and speeds it was doing it. I've been super busy and haven't got the chance to really tear in to it but was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

2024.05.14 03:01 movealongnofire Current switch, addressable input module and SLC wire inside 208V motor disconnect/contactor enclosure?

Retrofitting a building which has current sensor switche inside 208V three phase motor disconnect and contactor enclosure. The current switches close a low voltage circuit going back to the conventional panel. That low voltage circuit wiring is run from the current switch in the enclosure, through its own conduit back to panel.
In converting to addressable, three possibilities ities: (1) can an addressable input module for the current switch be placed inside that contactor enclosure and existing low voltage signal wire used for SLC? (2) Or can the addressable input module be mounted in its own box to side connected via nipple with the existing low voltage signal wire used as SLC? (3) Or do both the input module and DLC need to be out of the contactor enclosure?

2024.05.14 02:15 ZeroCentsMade It's the End, But the Moment Has Been Prepared For…No Seriously We've Been Preparing All Season – Doctor Who Classic: Season 18 Review

This post is part of a series of reviews. To see them all, click here.

Season Information

Review

In retrospect I really shouldn't have called Season 15 "The Transitional Season". Because, well, Season 18 is obviously the Doctor Who season most clearly transitioning between eras. So much so that by the end of the season the only thing left of the 4th Doctor era is the 4th Doctor himself. Through this season, the 4th Doctor, Romana and K-9 become the 5th Doctor, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan. And it leads to kind of an odd feeling.
It's also notable that there's a serious tonal change that happens this season. While Graham Williams never quite got to make the comedy era of Doctor Who that he wanted to, he did give it a more relaxed and free-flowing atmosphere. Under new Producer John Nathan-Turner, as well as new Script Editor Christopher H. Bidmead, the story veers right back into being a more serious show. And for the first time, there was real effort being put into grounding a lot of the stories in real science. And while the actual science involved isn't really accurate, I do think it has a positive impact on the season as a whole. The science on Doctor Who is always made up, but at least this way it feels like we're pointing in the vague direction of something real.
It's certainly a refreshing change of pace from the rest of the 4th Doctor era. The 4th Doctor era, at least from Season 13 onwards had a tendency to feel very gimmicky. During the Hinchcliffe era it was taking popular horror stories like Frankenstein or The Mummy and adapting them for Doctor Who. During the Williams era, that shifted more towards genre parodies, with some journeys in to Greek mythology. Season 18 feels kind of refreshing in large part because…there's not really any obvious influences. Sure we're pulling from real science, both in individual episodes and in a more general sense with the broad theme of entropy, but that feels a lot less invasive than pulling from more famous media.
Which leads us nicely to the entropy thing. Season 18, at least in theory, has an overarching theme of "entropy". Or more accurately it has an overarching theme of "decay" that sometimes takes on the form of entropy. Because look, there's nothing especially entropic about the vampires in State of Decay or the way the Argolins are dying out in The Leisure Hive, but it still falls into the larger umbrella of decay. Which gives this season a fairly melancholic tone to it on the whole. Throughout the entire season, things seem to be falling apart, especially once we get to E-Space. Warriors' Gate is full of all of this imagery of past riches fading into nothing, Keeper of Traken is literally about an entirely way of life nearly falling apart, and Logopolis is where we, really and truly, get the entropy theme, for real this time. But also…
Logopolis, in which the Doctor dies, briefly turns into a man with white cracked skin only to sit up looking about a decade younger, is probably the best indication of the other half of our decay theme. Because Doctor Who is a show where things generally work out for the best, this is a season that is as much about rebirth as it is about decay. The Argolins from Leisure Hive are given a chance at new life for their civilization. The peoples with meet in the E-Space Trilogy all ultimately get delivered from their decaying societies and given a chance to build back up to something new. In Meglos…I guess at the end there the people of Tigella do ultimately get to live on the surface of their planet…somehow. Even in Keeper of Traken the story leaves the Trakenite people on something of a hopeful note, with a new Keeper installed to look after it. Sure, in Logopolis we learn that the Master apparently blew up Traken off screen (if I had a nickel for every time the Master blew up a planet off screen…) along with its entire solar system, but at least at the end of Keeper things are looking hopeful.
And that idea of renewal kind of extends to the show itself right? Like this is clearly a season that's transitioning into a new, renewed version of itself, at least in theory. That's why we lose Romana and the robot dog, and replace them with a couple of kids and a fairly young flight attendant. John Nathan-Turner felt that the trio of Romana, K-9 and the Doctor were too invulnerable, which is why he decided to write out the two surplus geniuses. You can see this in how stories are structured. Generally speaking in the five stories that Romana and K-9 are in this season, Romana is either confined to her own subplot or taken out of commission, while K-9 is so constantly dismantled or on very low power, it begins to feel like a running gag by the time he leaves.
And at the same time, this season shows us Romana at the absolute height of her competence. She's basically the Doctor's equal by the time we enter E-Space. I think that's why I feel like it was the right time for Romana to leave: she'd done all the developing she needed to. There was nowhere to take the character without making the show just as much about her as it was about the Doctor. So while losing Romana, and Lalla Ward with her, is a shame, it was the right time to drop her. Losing K-9 on the other hand…look the TARDIS is already about to get exceptionally crowded and unless you don't bring Nyssa back in Logopolis there really isn't time for the robot dog, but I'd argue that there was no need to drop K-9 from the show. His presence making the TARDIS team "unassailable" just doesn't hold up, as him continually being dismantled throughout this season proves. And, as Tom Baker once observed in one of the funniest outtakes in Doctor Who history "you [K-9] never fucking know the answer when it's important".
But we do eventually have to introduce the younger folks. It starts out with Alzarian teenager turned TARDIS stowaway Adric. Adric has a reputation as an awful companion, though personally I've never been that down on him. I don't love the character, but he's perfectly acceptable in small doses. The biggest issue I take with him is that he plays into the sullen teenager a bit too much. The moody teenage genius is just not an enjoyable character to follow along with, and it's only going to get worse next season. However, there are moments, particularly in Keeper of Traken where the student/pupil dynamic with the Doctor makes him genuinely likable. Also, his obvious crush on Nyssa, more seen in Logopolis is fairly endearing. But a lot of the time he's just, and I've used this phrase before, an arrogant little shit. And I think it is fair to point out that Matthew Waterhouse, inexperienced as he was, often gives a very wooden performance.
Nyssa is introduced in Keeper of Traken. There we see her interacting on her own homeworld. She takes initiative a number of times in that story, mostly during the jailbreak section which she organizes. In Logopolis she's out searching for her father and that's when she has the rug pulled out from under her. She learns that, in short order, the Master killed her father and then that he destroyed her home system. Between the two stories we get a really solid setup for Nyssa, and Sarah Sutton is really solid in the role, though whether the show will follow through on any of this in the next couple seasons…is a story for another time. And speaking of characters whose somewhat tragic first couple stories often get overlooked, in her first story Tegan learns that the Master has killed her aunt, who she was clearly quite close to. Sure, it's not on the level of Nyssa's loss, but it's not a competition. Tegan, like Nyssa, gets a strong introduction, and like Nyssa we'll see in the future how successful the followup to that introduction is.
And then, there's the Doctor. Amidst all of this change, he's the one thing that stays constant from the prior era, and he ends up feeling a bit out of place by the end of season as a result. Some of this is in retrospect of course. It's only weird seeing the 4th Doctor with Nyssa and Tegan because we think of these two as 5th Doctor companions. But I do think that there's something to the idea that the 4th Doctor belonged to the 1970s. We've now reached the 1980s and the scarf man has somewhat been left behind. Or that may be because Tom Baker just seems tired this season. He's not putting in bad work, because he knows the character too well to do that, but he does seem more disconnected than ever. Of course if I'm going to mention this, I should mention that Baker was getting over an illness during the filming of the E-Space trilogy. And he has his moments of higher energy, particularly in Keeper of Traken for whatever reason. But there are also times, even before the illness, where Tom looks like he's sleepwalking through all of this. I think it's fair to say it was time for him to leave.
On a technical level there are some changes. The Doctor's costume changed substantially, and the rest of the cast will be wearing the same clothes they were introduced in for the rest of next season (well okay, Nyssa's outfit will undergo some minor alterations). It's one of the less well-handled elements of the JNT era: people stop dressing like people, but end up stuck in costumes. This will somewhat ameliorate as time goes on, but it's something worth noting: it starts early, and was very intentional. JNT explicitly wanted all of his main cast to be wearing "uniforms". Musically we've undergone a big change as well. Dudley Simpson is gone and he's been replaced by a rotating cast of composers from the BBC Radiophonics workshop. These are all solid at bare minimum, with my favorite probably being Paddy Kingsland. As a result of this change, the style has changed considerably. Over the course of Simpson's time as composer, the show became more and more orchestral, whereas under the Radiophonics composers we've gone in a more electronic direction. It's a big shift, but by the end of the season it feels natural, and I think Doctor Who does well with a synth sound.
Season 18 begins the reign of Doctor Who's final producer. Eventually JNT will stay on too long, as even he would admit, but at this point all of his ideas feel new and fresh. They aren't all improvements, though some are, but Season 18 does feel entirely different from what came before it, and there's value in that. More than that though, other than enforcing a more serious tone than the Graham Williams era, Season 18 ends up feeling like it's going back to basics. Sure it's got an arc (two of them in fact) but all of the stories feel a lot less constrained by a style than earlier 4th Doctor era stories, which works to it's advantage. Genuinely, this is a strong season, a strong start to John Nathan-Turner's run as producer, and a strong end to the 4th Doctor era.
Even if, you know, it already felt like the show had left him behind well before he regenerated.

Awards

Best Story: State of Decay
What can I say, I like it when old Uncle Terry does horror. It's odd, I'll admit, to have talked up so much how refreshing it felt to have a season that didn't rely so much on gimmicks and then to say that my favorite story from said season to be the vampire pastiche but…I'm allowed to be self contradictory if I like. And genuinely, State of Decay works so well that it's worth highlighting my own inconsistency to highlight the story.
Worst Story: Meglos
Meglos (the character) has no motivation, the stuff on Tigella is the most boring version of a conflict we've done…probably dozens of times at this point, none of the characters are at all memorable…what a waste of the return of Jacqueline Hill.
Most Important: The Keeper of Traken
Logopolis has the regeneration and introduction of block-transfer computation, so this was a closely run thing. But Keeper introduces the version of the Master that will be sticking around for the remainder of the show, sets up a lot about Logopolis, and introduces a new companion. Like I said it's close, but this feels like the right call to me. I also could have gone with Warriors' Gate, but Keeper and Logopolis both feel much more significant to me.
Funniest Story: N/A
Often times when there's not really a comedy in a season, I go for the strangest story as a sort of proxy for the funniest story. But the strangest story this season was Warriors' Gate, and it's not the right kind of strange to qualify for this award. So we're leaving this space blank, as JNT intentionally tries to move the show away from what Graham Williams was doing with it.
Scariest Story: State of Decay
I had to chose which was scarier between the destruction of the universe via entropy or vampires and went with vampires. I think my sense of scale might be borked.

Rankings

  1. State of Decay (8/10)
  2. Warriors' Gate (8/10)
  3. The Leisure Hive (7/10)
  4. The Keeper of Traken (7/10)
  5. Logopolis (7/10)
  6. Full Circle (7/10)
  7. Meglos (1/10)
Season Rankings
These are based on weighted averages that take into account the length of each story. Take this ranking with a grain of salt however. No average can properly reflect a full season's quality and nuance, and the scores for each story are, ultimately, highly subjective and a bit arbitrary.
  1. Season 7 (8.1/10)
  2. Season 10 (7.5/10)
  3. Season 4 (7.0/10)
  4. Season 11 (6.5/10)
  5. Season 18 (6.4/10)
  6. Season 12 (6.3/10)
  7. Season 6 (6.3/10)
  8. Season 1 (6.2/10)
  9. Season 14 (6.2/10)
  10. Season 13 (6.1/10)
  11. Season 3 (6.0/10)
  12. Season 5 (6.0/10)
  13. Season 15 (5.9/10)
  14. Season 2 (5.8/10)
  15. Season 9 (5.8/10)
  16. Season 8 (5.8/10)
  17. Season 17 (5.8/10) *
  18. Season 16 – The Key to Time (5.6/10)
* Includes originally unmade serial Shada
I'm genuinely considering abandoning the season/doctor era rankings portion of these posts. Do I think that Season 18 was good…absolutely. The 5th best season of the first 18 though?
What's happened here is that a lot of very solid scores (4 sevens…) have skewed the results up higher than they would otherwise have gone to the point that, even me giving Meglos a 1/10 hasn't affected it that much. The end result is a season going much higher than I would otherwise put it. Granted if I were as high on Warriors' Gate as some, I'd probably feel better about this, but if I were as high on that story as some it probably gets a perfect score and borks these rankings even further. I don't know, I guess the rankings serve their purpose as a snapshot of how good I felt any given season was on average, but I less and less feel like they're a reflection of my actual rankings of the seasons
Next Time: Somehow, I've reached the end of the 4th Doctor era. Now I just have to write about him. That's…going to be a lot.

2024.05.14 01:48 Aborigine29 Car having a rough idle

Recently I’ve been experiencing a random rough idle. It could happen when I’m not moving, or when I’m going slow, under 1500 rpm. It seems to be completely random, sometimes it’ll happen at the start of a drive or in the middle or the end. Other times it won’t happen at all or be perfectly fine after doing it at the start/middle.
I’ve used an OBDeleven to look at codes and there was misfires in all 4 cylinders but I replaced the camshaft position sensor and those codes went away and the tool doesn’t show any more misfires, even though it was just doing it yesterday. The only code showing up is a coolant fan issue
Any suggestions?

2024.05.14 01:35 AutoLolo519 Golf Alltrack Advice

Hey all, I've been interested in the Alltrack for some time. I've never been in the position to get one, so I haven't really even looked for one yet. That is until I stumbled across one at a local used lot. The Alltrack is the same yr, w/ the same motor, trans, seats, radio, ect, ect. Even the same colour. Basically the same car w/ a more family friendly bosy and AWD.
I am wondering how rare the Alltrack really is? I'm fairly well set with the Jetta Highline I have now. Although it's currently worth approx 1.5x what I have left owing on it but to low km and other factors. I can pay it off no problem today, then finance the Alltrack. I'd do this to keep some sort of solid loan payment continuing to keep growing my credit score. Doing he payments would be almost half, and insurance would be almost the same.
I guess what I'm asking is are they rare enought to sink that chunk of cash right now, or do the people of Reddit think I'd be able to find another in a 1.5yrs when the Jetta is naturally paid off?

2024.05.14 01:34 Extension-Unit7772 Seeking advice re: fat intake for weight loss

High Fat? Low Fat? Minimal Fat? that is the question
My main purpose for Carnivore WOE is for dropping excess poundage for a healthy vibrant weight. Thankfully I do not have any illness to reckon with 🤞. I am puzzled as to how to best 'melt' my excess fat.
My initial 3 month foray into strict carnivore did not bring any loss except for body volume recomposition around my face and upper arms.
My food intake was 0 carbs, organic/grass fed beef meat : 80/20 ground beef, steaks (skirt, tips, and on a splurge rib eye), calf liver, kidneys, pork rinds, bacon, eggs, little chicken (thighs) and occasional tongue and tripes, Generous amount animal fats, butter and cream, cow & goat cheese which I later reduced and then eliminated.
Dropped the occasional cafe/ mocha, kept the black tea with milk, then reduced it by drinking every so often decaffeinated black tea with a 'cloud' of creamy
In searching why so little results, I saw somewhere (wish I could remember where/who) that the leanest the protein the faster the body would turn to its own surplus of fats for energy therefore accelerating journey to being leaner.
So now I am totally confused as it seems to go against the high fat concept that seems prominent in Carnivore literature.
HELP… Does it make sense in strict carnivore? trying hard to not be discouraged.
What are your thoughts? Advice?
I am a 65F and want to release at least 75lbs not just for esthetics but for overall well being and getting back to being as active as I would like with minimal discomfort and/limitations that comes with extra lbs.
Yes I felt the overall benefit (skin, lack of pain in feet/legs, healthier hair). I 100% understand how our human race does not benefit from any of the so called vegetable oils, processed/ packaged/transtormed foods and other products stemming from large manufacturing agro-business along with plants and their defense mechanisms.
Thank you

2024.05.14 01:19 Kodokama Homozygous C677T T/T - COMT (Slow) MET/MET Homozygous - What supplements should I take/avoid?

Some backstory: 20+ years of low function depression, motor tics, anxiety, apathy, insomnia, executive dysfunction, etc. No meds really helped until I got my Genesite testing and got on some meds in the green zones. I'm on several things like a mood stabilizer, antidepressant, antianxiety, ADHD med, and 15mg Lmethylfolate. Psychiatrist is concluding ADHD, Bipolar, and potentially some Autism.
I could have an IV of caffeine and still need a nap. I have an extremely labor-intensive job that requires me to balance many things and not stop moving for 8+ hours straight. I thrive in this kind of environment, but when I sit at my computer to do any of my other work I nearly fall asleep within minutes. I barely get out of bed in my off days and I wake up every day and have to force myself to even eat or do literally anything at all.
I've seen people on here mention Folinic Acid, SAMe, other B vitamins. What should I absolutely avoid in my case, but also what should I be taking additionally? Thank you all so much for your time <3
