2024.05.14 17:53 Aniform I just want some advice on my choices in terms of candle vessel and wicks and I just need a sanity check.
I'm just struggling to weigh out what would be the best choices for me. My entire brand is sort of a witchy vibe, with candle names that might be like "Mystic Cauldron" or something like that. So, I've taken great care to try and create a theme and choose fragrances that fit. I had planned on my candles being black with a black label with white font. Now, here's where I'm sort of running through it all in my mind. I'm offering a 8oz and 10oz candle and currently the 10oz candle comes with a bamboo lid, which of course adds to the COGS, but where I'm pricing that candle, it works out fine. I'd very much like a lid for the 8oz candles too, but with the lid added to it, suddenly the 8oz is too costly for the customer in my opinion. But, I keep looking at the similar 8oz offering in clear and the price is so ideal that if it were clear, I could get a lid AND still be under the price point I'd like. I just don't know how I feel about my all black label against clear glass. (Obviously that would be white wax and a black label.) And, here's the thing, I keep hearing from people who have yet to see the black candle vessel with the black label, but when I tell people about it, they often say, "black on black? I think it'd be more of a contrast if it were a black label on clear glass." And, that has me second guessing myself as well. I just decided to print up my label and put it on my black glass and I think it looks fine. There's a border around the outside edge and then the text.
Ultimately, my main concern is regarding clear glass. I just don't think the theme works well with clear glass, even though, omg, the price point of clear glass is beyond ideal. But, I look at other folks using amber apothecary jars and while I like those, I feel like they're more common. Even at one of the craft fairs I intend to go to, there's a seller there who is using them. I don't want to have customers see their amber jars and then see me with the same, just a different label. I feel like the black ones set me apart. And considering the witchy themes, black makes sense to me.
The next thing is, the wicks. I love the look of the wood wicks. I think they fit my theme well, they certainly can elevate the look of the candle. But, that said, they are pricier, I mean, I can get the wood wicks from Makesy + shipping = 43c per wick. Versus I buy cotton wicks from CandleScience + shipping = 11c per wick. That brings down my COGS so well. I'm still in testing phases and if you had asked me last night, I'd have said, screw wood wicks, I'll do cotton! But that was because in multiple tests I've had, the wood wicks are so temperamental to get going, if you don't trim just right, it's a pain. It's a pain to get lit, even if you follow best practices. And yet, once it's lit that first time, every time I reignite them, they work beautifully. I just don't know if I'm comfortable selling them when customers may not read directions or care for their wicks. I know prior to getting into candles, when I was just a consumer, I would literally light my candles with no wick trimming, burn them for 10hrs a day, and then light them again without any wick care whatsoever. It seems like a big ask to get customers to care for finicky wood wicks.
Anyway, I just have no one else to bounce things off of and would really like for some opinions.

Haven't been active on this subreddit in quite a while, and not sure if boards still sell on Reddit the way they used to back in the day Always knew this day would come and, at this point in my life, the board deserves a better home like the unused toys in Toy Story 3.
My relationship with this board was similar to what I imagine most people have with their first car, and I tried my best to treat it the same way Cameron's dad did his Ferrari in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. This board was my horse throughout college, taking me between the campuses of Rutgers New Brunswick so I could avoid the lengthy & crowded trips of the buses. It's never failed me.

Description: One and only owner. ~500 miles. All electronics OEM. Original wheels, trucks, deck, etc. XR battery. Grip tape needed to be replaced at some point and, being a purist, I reached out to Boosted to see what grip tape they used for the front and back. I bought the same types they gripped the Dual+ with and did my best to use the original grip tape as a stencil for the branding. Pride myself on taking extremely good care of my stuff. Would personally label as Good/Very Good condition. Still charges & operates like the first day I got it. Has never needed to be serviced or has had any RLOD related incidents.
Accessories: 3D Printed truck risers and/or tail/nose bumpers (independently printed, not Flatland 3D) but will include the original ones. Just specific things I want to point out to be completely transparent about the condition. Will do my best to include specific close-up pictures of all things mentioned below:
- Grip tape job is not perfect. Obviously pretty easy to re-grip a board with a single new piece of tape but, having tried to replicate the OEM job, it is certainly not perfect.
- Slight chafing on nose and tail.
- Back wheels are slightly chewed from use.
- Seems to be a staple or something lodged very deeply in the back-right wheel. Honestly, super hard to get a picture of. It seems like it's lodged so deeply in there that it is now actually integral to the wheel. I imagine if I (or you) ever tried to dislodge it, it would take a significant chunk out of the wheel. I honestly don't think it's anything to worry about. Been there for most of the board's life & has never caused issues. Always thought it was more trouble than it was worth to try and extract.

So I got freckle tattoos last Saturday. This is not the first time, i got them done a year and a half ago by the same artist and it was an awesome experience, she let me place them for the stencil and rlly worked w me to make sure it was how i wanted since im very particular about the freckles. It took about 2hrs the first time and i felt the price was fair for that amount of time. I went back to her last week despite her now being 8hrs away from me (she was only an hour away the first time). Another thing to note is that the freckles from a year and a half ago, at least some, are still there! So i was excited to get a refresh.
First she tried to cancel/reschedule knowing this would be the only time i'm in her city. I ended up going and they did end up cute. She did not do a stencil this time, and due to things she mentioned prior to me arriving I felt like i was inconveniencing her by being there and didn't want to take longer than I had to, so I didn't ask. She didn't do numbing cream this time, no biggie i don't really need it. She went right in after we discussed what I wanted, and like I said it did turn out cute, but we only spent an hour together and retrospectively I really regret not pushing for more and getting my moneys worth.
And finally, it's now only a week later, almost every single freckle she did is completely gone, most I can't even tell where they were, some are just extremely extremely light.  | Long story short, the lady I scheduled this tattoo for got busy and had asked if another artist in the shop could do it instead and I agreed. They didn’t let me know she was an apprentice and still learning but when she put the stencil on I loved it and was very happy. Flash forward 10 mins and I look down and the sun part was done and I started getting nervous but I’m not confrontational at all and didn’t want the apprentice to feel bad so I just let her do her thing. When we got to the heart it was really bad so I just asked if she’d fill it in. Paid full price and a $30 tip because that’s just who I am. I’m not mad at the artist at all as I should have said something. What would you get here? It’s a sentimental peice so if I could fix it I’d want to but I’m also not opposed to covering it up and getting this somewhere else with a trusted artist.  | Used all Montana gold paint, and flat clear. Put painters tape on cricut mats and used the wife’s cricut to cut the stencils then just threw on at random. Hello! I'm a beginner sewer who recently completed a weekend bootcamp on sewing. I sewed my own dress from scratch with facing on the collar and cuffs. I also learned to hand sew. I have a $300 budget to get set up to machine-sew and hand-sew 100% wool and 100% linen clothing (with some limited silk) for medieval-themed historical re-enactment events. These will be outfits for myself, my elementary-aged children, and occasionally for friends.
This budget does not include cloth or patterns (just tools). I would like to include tailoring/measurement/cutting tools, key reference/learning books (I can check some of these from the library), and beginner tools for simple hand-sewn embroideries, stamping clothes with stencils and paint, and applying wool applique. I'd love to figure out how to make custom cloth-covered buttons as well to match dresses and coats.

- a Singer XL-400 Futura sewing machine (no embroidery attachment, but I have a pedal).
- a Brother CS-6000i sewing and embroidery machine (with all attachments).
- Multi-color starter kits of thread sets and bobbin sets, plus white, black, and gray thread.
- a dedicated table and chair for sewing and cutting material.
- a decent ironing board, iron, cutting surface sheet, a see-through tailoring ruler, and a few sizes of non-fancy scissors - one from Joann's for cloth.

on real skin, almost everytime i put a stencil on the lines start to thicken while waiting for it to dry and it even gets as worse as details becoming just a blue blob. this is very annoying as even the most perfectly applied stencil gets messed up after 15 mins of drying. this way i can't see the smaller details of a tattoo i'mdoing and it's driving me nuts.
what's the problem here? i'm using Electrum green gold stencil gel. is it the gel? is it tge amount i'm using? am i not waiting enough before applying the stencil sheet? is it the skin prep? how do i fix this???

Nothing sucks more than almost clinching out a challenging run just to be snuffed out by these bosses. The whole goal of Balatro is to get a high score or to get a score that's good enough to beat the stake. These bosses don't encourage any strategy change or counterplay that's different then what's expected normally, they just move the goal posts to an insane degree.
I remember having a stencil run and getting Crimson Heart. In order to counter the boss I filled up on useless jokers so that the boss was less likely to choose my stencils. I then sold the debuffed joker and others so that my stencils could score optimally. I also tried to grab some judgement tarot cards as well just in case I needed to score twice. I remember this so long after because it was fun to strategize in order to beat an otherwise run ending boss. This is the type of gameplay boss blinds should encourage and Violet Vessel and The Wall just don't engage the player in a meaningful way. Getting these bosses when you're losing feels like a cheap blow and getting them when you're winning makes them nothing more than a "win more" check.
And because Violet Vessel is only one of five finisher blinds, you'll see it once every five runs. That is a lot for such a shitty blind.

I'm trying to recreate the pants from this character's outfit (Gado from Bloody Roar) and so far I've gotten a few reference images and ripped the models and flat texture from the game as a reference. As for methods to make them, I'm pretty lost. Research so far showed that I should probably go with either cotton or a cotton-nylon blend material for that military vibe, and for the markings I was thinking stencils and fabric paint might do the trick?
In any case, though I've been looking up plenty of tutorials on my own, if you've got any tips on the process please share those too!
