2024.03.11 14:34 IndieRex The Wild Beyond the Witchlight: Reimagined - Part XXII: Yon (The Trial and Lost Things)
| Welcome to Part 22 of The Wild Beyond the Witchlight: Reimagined, an expansion and alternative take on the The Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign. If you'd prefer to read with full formatting, see my blog at IndieRex.com. https://preview.redd.it/0kv0uxouipnc1.jpg?width=656&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9dc04883e65521f5d35931ebf82ed899b77c82b3 Introduction With the fomorian king Malabog slain the party is now faced with a difficult truth - Zybilna tried to have them killed through The League of Malevolence and consorted with the monstrous fomorians to overthrow Queen Mab . If they hadn't figured it out during the murder investigation, it is likely now clear that Zybilna is also behind the death of Lord Albert Frostwood. There is now only one left thing to do, return back to Arctis Tor and bring all of this to light. A Triumphant Return? Unexpectedly, the party will quickly find themselves on trial Through King Malabog's fortress of Mag Tureah, there should be an easy route for the players back out of the Feydark. The party's sleds and winter wolves will be ready and waiting and can take the characters back the palace without issue. However, when the party returns they will find themselves confronted by Kaltar Starlight, the leader of the Selenian Guard, and a large contingent of guards. Kaltar will explain he is placing the party under arrest as agents of The Summer Court and for the murder of Lord Frostwood. Astrid Frostwood will also be present and beg the players to not resist and that she will meet them in the prison help them to clear up this misunderstanding. - When the League of Malevolence failed to kill the party, Zybilna put in place a Plan B to deal with the characters by arranging to have them framed for Lord Frostwood's murder
- It's very important to try and avoid the players resisting the arrest. Emphasize the overwhelming force of guards that have come here. Have Astrid push hard for them to not fight back and her confidence that she can help them.
- If necessary, consider having winter eladrin present to help knock the party out with a sleep spell or something similar
- Kaltar is completely loyal to the court and cannot be convinced to not arrest the characters
- If the characters ask what will happen next, Kaltar or Astrid explain there will be a trial where they can profess their innocence and put forward their own case
- As the players are arrested, Astrid will convince Kaltar to allow the party to keep their items
Preparing for Court The characters will be imprisoned in a shared cell within the depths of the winter palace which is heavily guarded by the Selenian Guard. The prison is covered by a permanent antimagic field that has been attuned to let through only one other spell - arcane lock, which has been cast on all of the cell doors. After a short while, Astrid Frostwood will come to visit. She will explain a trial for Lord Frostwood's murder has been fast tracked for the next day and that this whole thing smells of a conspiracy. Nonetheless, she advises against trying to escape as it will be seen as the party being guilty and lead to a death sentence. If the party suggests that Zybilna is behind all of this, she will remark that it's entirely possible, though the Nightwalkers are also a possibility. Astrid explains that having a defense planned out, including any evidence to present or witnesses to call, will be very important and suggests they talk through this together (you may want to encourage your players to take notes here). Have Astrid ask leading questions if the players have trouble thinking up items to raise during their defense. She will also share that they will need to represent themselves during the proceedings and that casting spells during the trial is illegal. Most of this information can be found in Part 20, but in summary, potential items to have ready for court (if they have been discovered) include but are not limited to: - Anything learned by engaging / capturing the assassin Nephalex in Lord Frostwood's chambers
- The letters in Lord Frostwood's chamber don't match his handwriting (if compared to other of pieces of his writing, such as the poem found on his body). His family has also been very clear he is anti-war and certainly not an ally of the Summer Court
- A witness (Urmas from the Selenian Guard) saw a different nurse visit Lord Frostwood the day of his death – a red tiefling which is a rarity in Yon. Nephalex, the assassin, is a red tiefling
- Coins on the body of the assassin in Lord Frostwood’s Chamber are from the land of Oerth. Zybilna is the only member of the court with Oerth currency in her palace account
- An autopsy shows Albert was killed by shatterheart poison – the key ingredient for which is Inferno Tongue (a piece of which may have been found in Zybilna’s quarters)
- Balen Heartstone may have admitted that Zybilna ordered him to delay Lord Frostwood’s autopsy
- There is no direct evidence of the party's involvement with the Summer Court and they have no motive. Meanwhile, the party learned that Zybilna directly dealt with King Malabog based on their travels in the Feydark and has been seeking to free the fomorians
- While this is technically heresay, knowledge of recent fomorian sightings is common knowledge at this point
- Zybilna has a direct motive (how much of this the party uncovered will differ campaign by campaign)
- Zybilna had been working to stoke tensions between the Winter and Summer Courts. Zybilna’s goal in this was to convince Queen Mab to provide Zybilna with the resources for magical research she needed to accomplish her own true motive to grow her own power
- Eliminating Lord Frostwood not only took out Queen Mab’s closest other confidant, but also killed one of the most vocal anti-war proponents (and one of the nobles who was the most suspicious of Zybilna)
- This also had a side benefit of distracting the court while Zybilna arranged to free the monstrous fomorians from their prison in the Feydark. She struck a deal with their king to give them the winter court in exchange for serving her. To delay things further, Zybilna had Balen (the grand steward) temporarily block an autopsy
The Trial With the next morning it is time. The Selenian Guards will escort the party to the courtroom. I used the Court of Justice (blue variant) map by Czepuku to represent the courtroom. You are led into a grand courtroom, with high ceilings and large windows letting in streams of light. The room is packed with spectators who whisper and murmur amongst themselves, but your eyes are drawn to the figures that seem as if they will be overseeing the proceedings. At the center on a raised platform is a harengon dressed in finery, and on either side of him are various members of the Winter Court. - The harengon is judge named Hopwell Carrotsworth who will manage the trial. The court specifically has non-eladrin serve as judges as a form of impartiality, though it is still the nobles themselves who cast judgement
- The members seated as the "jury" of sorts are Rian Coldmoon, Astrid Frostwood, Gwen Frostwood, Zybilna, Lysander Coldmoon, and Lord Yeth
- You can adjust who you would like to have there though you need to keep Zybilna
- Members of the Winter's Legion are present to keep guard, though Kaltar Starlight, the leader of the Selenian Guard, is also present
- A number of members of the public watch from the audience, including the Witchlight Carnival owners, Mister Witch and Mister Light
- The players should situate themselves at the defense table and will be responsible for defending themselves. Sven Nightwalker will represent the case for the prosecution (his son Toren will be with him as co-counsel of sorts)
- Queen Mab and Isolde are not present
To start the proceedings Kaltar will interrupt any chatter and announce loudly. "Court is now in session. The honorable judge Hopwell Carrotsworth presiding." From there the judge will make opening remarks. Unfortunately for the party, the judge is quite insane. "Yes – yes! Lettuce proceed. By the twitch of my whiskers, I call this court to order!" Hopewell points down at the defense table as he continues. "You there, yes you, you stand accused don't you? Of offing our good Lord Albert Frostwood? And as if that weren't enough! Conspiring with the Summer Court – you say? What's the punishment for this... let's see let's see –HAA! oh yes... I say death!" The honorable Judge Hopwell Carrotsworth The way the trial will work is we will use a concept from another game ( Blades in the Dark) known as a clock. - Draw a circle with 8 segments on a piece of paper or screen. If the party makes an argument that seems convincing to the majority of the jury during the trial, fill a segment of the circle. Similarly, if the plaintiffs do then erase a segment.
- If something is especially convincing – feel free to make this 2 segments instead. The circle should be public as the party can discern from watching the nobles how they are feeling.
- For arguments you may choose to call for Persuasion, Deception, or other checks as appropriate (or have no check at all). If the players have made friends or enemies with members of the nobles overseeing the trial, they might get advantage or disadvantage on certain arguments
- At the end of the trial if the circle is full then the party is found not guilty. If 6 or more segments are filled they are found not guilty but certain nobles are not happy about it. Otherwise they are found guilty
The trial itself is split into the following phases. The judge will announce as the trial moves from phase to phase. - Opening Statements: The plaintiff (Sven) and then the defense (players) make opening statements (free-form arguments with no interruption by the other side)
- Present Cases: The plaintiff and then the defense call witnesses and provide evidence. Every witness can be cross-examined by the other side
- Most NPCs can be called as witnesses, except members of the jury and Queen Mab; if it's not feasible for someone to be called due to distance then they would also be ineligible (i.e., a NPC from the Fields of Spring or Murkendraw)
- Closing Arguments: The players can make a free-form closing argument if they wish
- Verdict: The nobles reach a verdict (guilty or not guilty) and the judge will announce it
Presenting Cases Sven's arguments during the "present cases" phase will include the following. Feel free to add any examples specific to your campaign as well (e.g., if players were caught breaking in somewhere, doing or saying something that could be misinterpreted). - The characters being a group of outsiders who arrive just before Lord Frostwood dies is quite a coincidence!
- If the party fought Toren Nightwalker at the ball, Sven will highlight how they attacked his son (and potentially killed his guards)
- Witnesses:
- If the players let Erik Coldhollow go in Part 15, he will unfortunately be captured and called up to the stand to show that players let a summer court spy go free - clearly a sign they are summer agents themselves
- If the players did not kill Endelyn, she may be called up to the stand if the party caused any commotion at Motherhorn
- If the players break into Zybilna's quarters and are caught by Toren Nightwalker, Toren might be called up to testify as to their actions
As mentioned, Judge Hopwell Carrotsworth will oversee the proceedings who is a bit of a character. - The judge is forgetful and easily distracted, frequently losing track of his train of thought and hopping between unrelated topics during the trial
- The judge has an insatiable appetite for carrots and snacks throughout the trial, occasionally offering one to participants
- The judge is also partial to puns and sayings. Some that you could consider using include:
- "I must say, your argument seems a hare off the mark."
- "Let's burrow down to the heart of the matter."
- "This is quite a hare-raising trial!"
The Verdict Once both sides have finished presenting cases it's time to move on to the verdict. Read the following as the judge addresses the courtroom. "The court has heard all of the evidence, all the testimonies, haven't they? The time is upon us, my dear carrots and cabbages, time to hop to the finish line! Time to reach... a verdict!" Based on the progress of the circle laid out previously, the judge will read a guilty or not guilty verdict. - If the party is found not guilty:
- Give everyone a point of inspiration for successfully navigating the trial
- If you would like your party to have a exciting combat to close out Yon then Lord Sven Nightwalker will demand a trial by combat, eliciting gasps from the room. The judge will explain that any noble has the right to call a trial by combat for a verdict they don't agree with. If the party wins then their innocence will hold.
- Otherwise feel free to skip to the "Enter Isolde" section below
- If found guilty
- The judge will gleefully call out: "Off with their heads!"
- Lord Sven Nightwalker will chirp up. "I will take pleasure in this – let me do it myself!"
The Confrontation Lord Nightwalker will fight the players inside the courtroom (see below for his stat block). If the players were found not guilty he fights alone as per the rules of trial by combat, but if he is executing a guilty verdict then two knights of the winter court will help him (see Part 19). If the combat is going south for him he will ask his son Toren to help him. Toren's relationship with his father is strained though, and he can potentially be convinced to stay out of it. https://preview.redd.it/n8hn33rcjpnc1.png?width=256&format=png&auto=webp&s=70ee744ec06cc3138b0f539b9451ea2c9f6c4143 https://preview.redd.it/rsrfcnpdjpnc1.jpg?width=848&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f19883b1bde7a2f02fcdcabfa65d5a80096e009a https://preview.redd.it/z1abgjqfjpnc1.png?width=494&format=png&auto=webp&s=5fd3a8ca345439365e9bd12bb771c3ccdc67f3f3 Enter Isolde When Nightwalker is almost defeated, or the party is not doing well and you want to toss out a lifeline, Isolde will throw open the doors of the courtroom and step inside, her sword Nepenthe drawn, interrupting the melee. She uses her stat block from Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. This section plays out a bit like a cutscene, but feel free to adjust to your needs. The heavy courtroom doors burst open with a resonant clang. All eyes snap towards the entrance as Isolde strides in, the determined clack of her boots echoing off the stone floors. In her grip, she wields a glowing red blade. With a swift, deliberate motion, Isolde extends the sword forward, pointing its tip directly at Zybilna in silent accusation. "The witch killed Lord Frostwood. She's behind everything." Mister Witch and Mister Light will gasp and moan from the audience as Isolde enters, as them all being together may potentially break the fey bargain that gave them ownership of the Witchlight Carnival (see Part A of The Witchlight Carnival if you need a refresher). Isolde will stride past them towards the bench - "Enough squeaking mice. No one cares if you lose your carnival." Zybilna stands up from her place amongst the nobles, her stoic face breaking into a smirk. "Oh dear, whatever happened to courtroom decorum?" She pauses for a moment and then lightly claps her hands. "Well, I suppose you're right. I did have our dear Albert killed." The unseelie nobles gasp and the guards in the room put their hands at their weapons. Zybilna chuckles in response, "How quaint, don't all be so taken aback. Was he any more important than any other? I have witnessed the rise and fall of empires. Do you think any of you are more than my little puppets?" Isolde grimaces and then charges forward. "Enough of this. Face me you devil!" At this point start a new combat. This will only last one round (or two if you're feeling spicy) but the intent is to showcase the danger and power Zybilna possesses. It's crucial that Zybilna is not killed or disabled. Remember she has negate spell and legendary resistances/actions. Don't be shy about using them given it is only one round, or even fudging rolls if needed. - Include Isolde and any other members of the court who you think would help fight in the initiative order as allies
- Use the winter eladrin stat block (MotM) for nobles who don't have one
- For Zybilna use the Iggwilv stat block from the campaign. If you're using a VTT like Roll20, make sure the stat block is named Zybilna (and not Iggwilv) so a roll doesn't give away her identity
- It's fine if Zybilna kills anyone in the winter court – if anything it is a good show of her power.
At the end of the round the air grows cold as the radiant form of Queen Mab floats into the room. She will yell out "Enough!" and fire a blast of cold energy that causes Zybilna to be slammed backwards against a wall. "That's my cue, until we meet again!" With a wicked grin, Zybilna disappears in a flash of magical energy (note: using her amulet of the planes), leaving the courtroom in shock and disbelief. - Isolde disappears soon after, seemingly giving chase using her plane shift ability
- If the players never broke into Isolde's quarters you can have her accidentally drop her pack when she disappears. Inside are the items they would have been found in her room from Part 20.
- If Zybilna happened to kill any party members, I would recommend having Mab resurrect them
- The events of the courtroom make it clear to everyone that Zybilna is the true guilty party here. Even if the players were found guilty during the trial they will now be absolved
- Feel free to have the players talk with whomever inside the courtroom, but at some point they should be approached by Queen Mab who will state: "We have made a grave error and you have my apologies. There is much to speak on but for now I think it best if you retire to your quarters while I address this."
- Once the players have settled back in their rooms have Astrid pay a short visit:
- She will share that the queen has arranged to collect and return their Lost Things as well see them through a fey crossing back to the Material Plane. They will all meet in the morning at the fey crossing outside the palace
- She will thank the party for all of their help with investigating her father's murder. While it's unfortunate that Zybilna got away, at least she knows the truth and has closure
- The rest of the court is still reeling from the revelation about Zybilna
- Note: The players will be returning to the Feywild later in the campaign. However, if you don't want the players to leave the Feywild (or don't think they will want to) there is an option for handling this that I'll cover in the next entry but will involve skipping content. In that case the portal in the next section should likely go to Vale Crossing instead
Departures and Leavetaking https://preview.redd.it/r9oqhw0hjpnc1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c48d5d0bde136deee7cb9172392d82cc601328d2 In the morning Kaltar Starlight will escort the players to a ridge outside the palace where a fey crossing is located. He will apologize for any mistreatment on his part and for having them arrested. I used the Fey Village (night gate variant) map by Czepuku for this scene, though a map isn't strictly needed here. - Have any key NPCs from Yon waiting on the ridge when the players arrive to say their goodbyes. I would recommend Astrid and Luca at minimum, but anyone the party had a good connection to would be a safe bet. Mister Witch and Mister Light, still recovering from the encounter with Isolde could also be here - if so, you should decide whether or not they've lost ownership of their carnival
- Give the players a chance to speak with everyone
- Once they're ready, Queen Mab will be waiting by the fey crossing to speak with the party
- She will finally bequeath the party their Lost Things!
- She will also provide a few updates:
- After the confrontation at the courtroom she personally checked the seals on the Feydark. Luckily the entrance the players used was the only one currently down, and she restored it
- A large host of fomorians was amassed near the main entrance of the Feydark, as if expecting to be let out of their underground prison soon. It seems they were just in time in stopping Zybilna from having them let free to attack the palace
- While this part of Zybilna's plan was stopped, the fact that she admitted to Lord Frostwood's murder, likely means she likely succeeded in some of her other machinations. Mab promises to be vigilant
- Once the party has finished, Queen Mab will activate the fey crossing back to the Material Plane and bid the characters farewell and good luck
Resources I have highlighted some of the resources I used for this portion of the campaign below. Music - Yon Background Music
- Location Specific Music
- Combat Music
- Lord Sven Nightwalker
- Zybilna
What’s Next? Our travels in Yon have come to an end. While this may seem like a happy ending of sorts, the characters finally reunited with their Lost Things, Zybilna has now solidly placed herself as a serious threat to be dealt with. Will our characters be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor, or they will be called back up to deal with this menace? As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any comments, questions, or suggestions and…see you in the Feywild! submitted by IndieRex to wildbeyondwitchlight [link] [comments] |
2024.02.29 04:37 jdubsworld_ [Arm-chair GM] Where the Sabres problems are and what I believe GM Kevin Adams should do this off-season.
Before everyones like: Wow this is long I'm not reading. There's a TLDR for you at the bottom :) I think I have a slightly different approach/take on what I think the Sabres should do this off-season and I'm curious on what others think. Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about.
So first I'd like to dive into the teams overall stats to build some context with my overall thinking. Currently the Sabres have played 59 games and this is where they sit among the league in (what I would consider) some key metrics:
- Corsi (CF%): 12th
- Some teams above the Sabres: CAR (1st), FLA (2nd), EDM (3rd), LAK (4th), DAL (6th), COL (9th)
- Some teams below the Sabres: TBL (13th), VAN (15th), TOR (16th), NYR (20th), DET (29th)
- Shots for% (SF%): 6th
- Some teams ahead of us: LAK (1st), CAR (2nd), EDM (3rd), FLA (4th)
- Some teams below us: A lot
- Goals For% (GF%): 13th
- Some teams ahead of us: WPG (1st), VAN (2nd), BOS (4th), FLA (5th), VGK (6th), EDM (7th), CAR (9th), COL (11th)
- Expected Goals For% (xGF%): 19th
- Teams ahead of us: A lot
- Teams below us: TBL (20th), NYR (24th), DET (29th)
Some Secondary stats that I also like to keep track of: - Scoring Chances For% (SCF%): 16th
- Some teams ahead of us: CAR (1st), EDM (2nd), FLA (3rd), LAK (4th), COL (6th),
- Some teams below us: BOS (18th), NYR (19th), VGK (22nd), DET (30th)
- High Danger Chances For% (HDCF%): 23rd
- Teams above us: A lot
- Teams below us: DET (29th), then a lot of bad teams like CHI, SJS, etc
- High Danger Goals For% (HDGF%): 30th
- Teams above us: Every single one except CHI and SJS
Those are pretty much all the team stats that Natural Stat Trick tracks. You can find them all here:
https://www.naturalstattrick.com/teamtable.php.
So looking at the above numbers it's pretty clear where the Sabres problems are. At 5v5 their possession numbers are top half in the league. We are actually a good to even very good 5v5 possession team. We generate more shots than the opponent and even when you look at GF%, we are still in the top half. Our expected goals are a little below average but nothing that I would say is too concerning. I think its important to talk about these stats because it shows how, in my opinion, the standings don't accurately reflect the Sabres skill level. Are they a top 5 team in the league right now? Or even top 10? I don't think so. But I think we are in the 11-16 range for sure. Especially when you look at our 5v5 numbers.
You can see all the teams at the top in these categories: CAR, FLA, EDM, LAK. These are all top teams in the NHL at the moment. Of course these stats aren't everything and there is room for fluctuation. The team with the overall best numbers doesn't always win the cup. It's probably more likely they don't. Even still it gives us a really good idea of where we stand. We are consistently ahead of teams like BOS, NYR, DET in almost all of these metrics but below teams like CAR, LAK, EDM, FLA, DAL.
The real problem comes when you look at the High Danger chances and high danger goals we give up each game. We are sitting right around all the bad teams that are literally tanking like CHI, SJS, etc. This is a problem and it needs to be fixed. In my opinion you fix this, the powerplay and stay healthy and this team is in the playoffs easily. How does this get fixed? Honestly, I don't know. I think getting a top4 D and having Ryan Johnson in his 2nd season playing full time should help us. Not having EJ play all night will do us good. But I think its just up to the coaches. I'm not a professional. I don't know what the best way to fix this problem is. It's their job to identify this as a MAJOR issue and fix it. We will NEVER become a good hockey team if we give up more high danger chances than we create. Your top 6 teams in that catagory are EDM, FLA, CAR, DAL, COL in that order. Out of the top 16 teams in HDCF% only 3 are not in a playoff position. 1 of those teams (NJD is currently 5 points out). This needs to get addressed.
To conclude this portion: The Sabres are an average to above average 5v5 possession team but are bottom of the league in High Danger chances and goals foagainst. To provide a bit more context. We are an above average possession team with our top2 centers having down years, having EJ/Clifton play every night, Quinn injured all season, Sammy injured for a long time (still injured) tons and tons of other injures. These things I listed can all be fixed without acquiring new players or making crazy trades. Cozens/Tage need to re-gain form, stay healthy and dont keep playing bad vets and we are already much better.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next up: Special Teams - Power Play: 27th
- Top teams in the league: TOR, TBL, EDM, CAR, FLA, NYR, COL, DET, BOS
- So not only are EDM, CAR, FLA and COL really good possession teams, they also have really good powerplays. Look at NYR and BOS. These are two teams that the Sabres have better possession numbers than. But people will say, 'well it doesn't matter, look where they are in the standings.' Well this is one of those major reasons why. DET included. They are a bad 5v5 team. Like very bad. But they have a top 10 powerplay and PK and win many games because of it.
- Penalty Kill: 18th
- Top teams in the league: LAK, CAR, FLA, DAL, PHI, DET, BOS, NYR
- See any pattern? Well first off, LAK, CAR and FLA are top in possession and special teams. So theres no reason to wonder why they are very good. But look at teams like DET, BOS and NYR again. These are teams with not very good possession numbers but are top 10 in the PP and the PK. PHI was a team most didn't think would be very good this year. Their possession numbers are okay. But they are top 10 on the PK. Is the PK the reason for their success this year? Not all of it. But possibly a part of it.
The fact of the matter is the Sabres are not getting ANY help AT ALL from their special teams. You can be as good at 5v5 all you want but ALL good teams need to have a good powerplay and penalty kill. Doesn't need to be the best. But it has to be at least top 15. It needs to be able to bail you out, win games you weren't supposed to, etc. This is how you put together a full season and make the playoffs. We need better here.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay so now that the Sabres team metrics are done and we have a full context of where this team is.
Let's look at the Salary cap, who is coming off the books and who needs to get re-signed. This is going to assume the cap is $83.5m. I expect it to rise however we'll just keep it at $83.5.
Players coming off the books that won't be re-signed:
- Oloffson ($4.75m)
- Girgensons ($2.5m)
- Okposo ($2.5m)
- Jost ($2m)
- Robinson ($1.6m)
- Erik Johnson ($3.25m)
- Bryson (RFA)
- Comrie ($1.8m)
- Riley Stillman (RFA)
Players who I'd like to re-sign
- Casey Mitts
- Peyton Krebs
- Joker
- UPL
Before we begin. IDK what prices are the best for these players. Price shouldn't matter for this. Just the sentiment that I want to keep them. Don't get mad.
Not going to spend time on the people leaving. You all know why they should leave. For Casey Mitts I'd sign him to the Cozens/Tage contract. I spoke about this in another thread, what's the point of risking to sign Tage/Cozens early so that we could get them to really good cap hits if we are not going to utilize that cap space? One way to do that would be to sign your best player this year (also top 3 on the team in possession) to the same contract as the other guys. Hes just as good as them. Doing this would give us a ton of flexibility in the lineup each night and it would help us sustain injuries a bit better knowing we have really nice depth down the middle. One of the 3Cs can move to the wing as well. It doesn't matter. As you will also see below, we will not have any issues with cap space. He gets like 5-6 years or something at $7.1m.
Next will be Krebs. I'd give him the earlier Tage contract. 3 years at $1.4m-$1.6m. Or something along those lines. Hes a good player for the bottom 6 and given better linemates (like we've saw) he can play even better. I think at his cap hit it would be real value for us.
Joker I would also like to re-sign. Hes not a great player but he does so many things well. Hes also still super young. In my opinion hes going to be in the NHL for 10 more years and have a long career playing between the 2nd and 3rd pair. Whether that with us or another team. Hes not the fastest but hes also not slow. He doesn't have the hardest shot but it good, smooth skater and MOST IMPORTANTLY hes good at exiting the zone. I think on a good team hes a very good 3rd pair guy. Which is where I'd want him for us. Give him 2-3 years at $3m or something and I'd be happy.
For UPL I'm not sure what the price would be. I'd use Gustavsson as the comparison I guess. I've saw other people mention him. His contract was 3 years at $3.75m. I'd be happy with that.
That would give us 10F 6D 1G with a cap hit of 76.8m. Leaving us with: $6.7m in cap space. I would then buy-out Connor Clifton. This would save us $2m off the cap in 2024-25 and 2025-26, but then cost us $1.1m for 2 years after that (his current cap hit is $3.3m for 2 more years but a buy-out would be $1.1m for 4 years). That would bring the cap space to: $8.9m not including if the cap rises which it's expect to
So this is what it would look like overall:
https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/4930482 10F 5D 1G for a cap hit of $74.5m. Leaving us with $8.9m in cap space.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Positions of need: - 4th line wingers (2): Assuming we bring back Mitts, Krebs will be the 4C. We will need new 4th line wingers to play with Krebs. I'm not sure on specific names but I'd be looking into heavy, two-way possession players. I don't need brawlers or idiots looking to take off heads. I need good possession players that play a heavy game.
- Back-up goalie: I am sending Levi back to Roch next year. Let him cook. No reason at all to rush him at this point. UPL is the starter so we just need a vet backup goalie. Someone who is capable of playing games in a row incase of injury (which UPL has be known to get often) and won't be a liability.
- Top 4 RD: Pref a top pair D but top 4 works. Targets would be one of either Pesce or Skjei. Whoever CAR doesn't re-sign. I'd like to go into next year with Dahlin, Power, Sammy, Joker, RyJo and Signing as my d core. We can also trade for one (talk about it below)
That would give us 12F 6D 2G. We will probably also need 1 more dman as the 7th guy. Let's assume the cap goes up to $87.6m which is what is expected. That's a $4m increase giving us $12.9m in cap space. Let's say our top4 D costs us ~$6m. We have $6.9m for 2 4th line wingers and a backup goalie. I think that's reasonable. ~$2m for each player, give or take and 900k for the last guy. Keep in mind the Sabres might not be a team that spends to the cap right now and have an internal one. So instead of $12.9m in space you might only have $9-10m in space. Either way you would be able to make it work.
The lineup would look something like this:
Skinner-Thompson-Tuch
Greenway-Mitts-Peterka
Benson-Cozens-Quinn
Signing-Krebs-Signing
Dahlin-Signing
Power-RyJo
Sammy-Joker
UPL
Signing
I consider the 2nd and 3rd line both interchangeable.
Kulich, Rosen, Savoie and Ostlund would be first call-ups I would assume. Unless they are traded. Bottom line is we have help in Roch if we need to call-up someone incase of injuries.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coaching Staff:
This post has been quite long so I'm going to try and keep this part short and simple. For me, I'd give Donny one more year. Before everyone rolls their eyes here is my logic:
His first 2 years here we were rebuilding and he did a very very good job with all our prospects. He developed them really well. We didn't make the playoffs but that was never the goal or realistic. His 3rd year we had some more expectations. We were still unsure where we would stack up BUT playoffs didn't seem so unrealistic anymore. We finished 1 point out and I think many would still call the season fun and entertaining and a pretty good success. This was the first year the team has fell below expectations under Donny. I talk a lot of shit about him too but I just don't think all the problems are his. I'll explain more below but yeah. I would keep him to start the year.
Some things he needs to improve on and I would need to see improvement throughout the season or hes gone
- More accountability with his players. From vets all the way to rookies. There is no accountability on this team. EJ should of been sat a long time ago
- Team selection. I don't know why Okposo is on PP1. Or why EJ is playing over RJ every night. These roster blunders need to be fixed.
- In game management. Whether it be not calling a time-out or not knowing how to pull your goalie, his in-game management is lacking.
- Those are the 3 key areas I would need to see improvement on.
His assistants though I would fire them all. The power play and penalty kill sucks. We get scored on in the first 5 min of every game as if our game prep is non-existent. I feel like the coach responsible of scouting the opponent isn't even there half the time as it always feels like our game plan is lacking. I'd fire them all and replace them with experience assistants with a record of success.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Potential Trades - If we can't find a top4 D in UFA then I'd move one of the top 4 prospects plus a pick or two for one.
- I'd also look into moving Skinner. Will have to retain salary but saving that money would be huge and in my opinion we would be way better off for it. He plays a lot of minutes in the top 6 and does not drive possession. Hes just a finisher. I think the Sabres would be even better with a different player taking up those minutes. We have Quinn/Peterka that would take his spot. Let's say we have to retain $2-3m for 3 more years. Well we just saved $6-7m off the cap and can now re-sign Peterka and Quinn. Everyone moves up the line-up and you would have something like this:
- Quinn-Thompson-Tuch
- Benson-Cozens-Peterka
- Greenway-Mitts-Signing
- Signing-Krebs-Signing
- We could use that saved money on a middle 6 two-way beast and improve the team greatly. Not only would Quinn (for example) be better on the top 6 by improving their overall possession numbers, we can to insert another good possession player into the lineup and in general our whole team gets stronger.
- These are the only trades I'm looking at. Or if a 4th line wingegoalie option is available for late picks or something.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CONCLUSION / TL;DR The Buffalo Sabres are an average to above average 5v5 possession team but lack defensive discipline and are one of the worst teams at giving up high danger chances. We also have one of the worst power plays and a below average penalty kill.
On top of all that the Sabres have had major injures to Jack Quinn (top6 player on this team) and Sammy (top 4D on this team). Not to mention week+ long injuries from UPL, Levi, Girgensons, Greenway, Tuch and Cozens. This certainly has not helped the Sabres chances.
For me, blowing things up, trading Mitts or another player just to change things is not the answer. I think overall this core group of players is really good. There does need to be some changes. I think we need to get heavier. Which is why I'd bring in 2 wingers for the 4th line. Players that are very good at hockey and drive possession but they also play a heavy game. Like Greenway but even a bit heavier. But hes the type of player I'd be looking at. I think we need to do some changes on D as well. I'd buy-out Clifton and bring in a new D via UFA or trade. We also need a backup goalie to play behind UPL. A vet who has experience and could provide value to UPL as he navigates being a #1. Also someone able to take the load in case of injuries throughout the season.
After that I'd surround Donny with some actual good assistants and make it a focus to find good special team assistants. We need to be in the top half of the league in those areas.
I think right now with this team if we had average special teams and Quinn not hurt we'd be in the playoffs. That's why its my belief to stay the course and round out the team a bit more rather than making drastic moves. With better coaching and special teams, less injures and an upgraded defense/4th line, I think playoffs is expected. If GMKA wants a new coach than go for it. But I think blowing up this team and trading Mitts or something is a mistake. We are so close.

2024.01.29 17:28 Weary-Sheepherder425 Random Coincidence I noticed
Chicago and Ottawa appear to be cursed with serious injuries, Out of the 12 times the medical staff have brought out a stretcher for an injured player since the 2021/22 season. 8 of those times have either had Chicago or Ottawa involved, whether they've had the player getting injured or them being the opposing team of an injured player
Jacob Trouba (CHICAGO vs. NY Rangers) Tanner Kero (Dallas vs. CHICAGO) Connor Murphy (CHICAGO vs. OTTAWA) Anton Forsberg (OTTAWA vs. Edmonton) Samuel Savoie (CHICAGO vs. Minnesota) Erik Brannstrom (OTTAWA vs. NY Islanders) Dylan Larkin (Detroit vs. OTTAWA)

2023.12.03 22:10 jdubsw0rld A realistic look at the Sabres organization and our current problems (The long, ADHD version) Read at own risk
Woke up this morning to a rant blaming the Pegulas for the Sabres lack of success. I don't think that's necessarily a fair statement and I figured I'd do a deep dive here. This is going to be another long one, so I understand if you don't want to read it. Just skip to the conclusion.
The Pegulas and their ownership First, lets go over the ownership history of the Sabres to build some context. Before the Pegulas, the Sabres owner was Tom Golisano. He purchased the Sabres in 2004 after they were owned by the league in 2003. Pretty much saved us from getting folded/moved. Gary Bettman is also a huge reason we are here has he wanted to find an owner and keep the team in Buffalo. We missed the playoffs for 2 years at that point and were in financial ruin. Now every Sabres fan should be thankful for that as without him I don't think we'd be here. He was only the owner for 6 years but I am very great full he stepped up when he did. He wasn't perfect but he saved us and I think every Sabres fan should understand that. If you'd like to read more about the situation at the time:
https://thehockeywriters.com/sabres-revisiting-tom-golisanos-purchase-to-save-the-franchise/ Then in 2010 comes Terry Pegula and he purchased the Sabres from Golisano for $189m. Terry & Kim have been the owners from 2011-2023. During that time we have not made the playoffs once. Not going to lie, that's pretty bad. But lets take a look at what the Pegulas have done since they got to Buffalo and see if they are the problems with this franchise.
The hires. I think the one problem the Pegulas had since purchasing the Sabres is the poor management hires and the lack of consistency. There has been a ton of turnover throughout the years and that is obviously on the owners. When the Pegulas purchased the franchise we retained Darcy Regier but then moved on from him for Pat LaFontaine. From there we hired Jason Botts & Tim Murray. So there is no denying the Pegulas GM hires have not been fantastic in that department. They do deserve blame there. But they also hired Kevyn Adams and there is no question he is the best GM we've had since Regier. So while they do deserve blame for the past hires for the Sabres, I do not think they are the problem today in 2023 as the man they hired has been really good.
Some other things I don't necessarily like about the Pegulas. There has been times where constant turnover and a lack of leadership seemed to be the Sabres problems. We've had players like O'Reilly and Eichel refer to being here as some of their darkest days. How much of that is on the Pegulas? I'm not sure. But they do deserve some of the blame. They are the owners after all and they set the tone from the top. So I do think you can look at the Pegulas and want more. But lets look at today, 2023. As of today the Sabres have arguably the best management and scouting staff we've ever had. This is mainly due to GMKA who the Pegulas hired.
Here is a link to the Sabres staff breakdown from the owner all the way down to the financials and stuff:
https://www.nhl.com/sabres/team/staff. We will mainly focus on the Executive, Management and Coaching staff sections.
General Manager: Kevyn Adams He is 49 years old and has been the GM of the Sabres since 2020. In my opinion there is no argument that GMKA has done WAY MORE good than hes done bad in his career as a GM. Lets go over them because I think this is important.
- GMKA staff hires: Jason Karmonos (Associate General Manager) and Sam Ventura (VP of Hockey Strategy and Research). These two hires alone make GMKA worth it no matter what he does. Both these hires have been instrumental in the Sabres drafting success since 2020. They both came from Pittsburgh and are huge analytics believers. You know how everyone says the Sabres front office is one of the best in the league? It's because of these guys. GMKA deserves tons of credit for these hires. Karmonos is going to be a GM one day. If the Sabres were smart they would move GMKA to Pres of Hockey Ops and move Karmonos to GM. But that's for another thread. (Quick mention to Nightengale, Forton, Devine and the rest of the scouting staff who also have done a fantastic job but were here before Adams).
- GMKA drafted prospects (4 years of drafting): Jack Quinn & Jason Peterka (2020), Owen Power & Isak Rosen (2021), Matthew Savoie & Noah Ostlund & Jiri Kulich (2022), Zach Benson & Anton Walberg (2023). These are all touted as top tier prospects and make up the top end of the Sabres prospect pool. The best prospect pool in the league (or at least top 3 depending who you ask). Now will all these players be good? Nope probably not. But that's why you draft a bunch of them so you can afford a few to bust. This does not include players like Poltapov, Kisakov, Nadeau, Novikov, Kozak, Neuchev, Komorov and even a few others who are more second/third tier prospects but have all made strides and improved since drafting them. I don't think there is any argument from any Sabres fan about our drafting. We've been the best drafters in the league since GMKA took over.
- Lets look at some of the trades GMKA has made and grade them.
- Jul 2021: Sabres acquire Robert Hagg, 2021 1st round pick, 2023 2nd round pick from PHI for Rasmus Ristolainen. Sabres got away with highway robbery. The 1st round pick turned into Isak Rosen and the 2023 second was Anton Wahlberg. Both very highly touted prospects while also dumping that $5m contract. One of GMKAs best trades. Sabres win this one by a mile.
- Jul 2021: Sabres acquire 2022 1st round pick and Devon Levi from FLA for Sam Reinhart. When this trade happened people were not happy with GMKA but man has this trade aged well for the Sabres (and Florida!). Devon Levi has established himself as one of the top young goalie prospects in the league and that 1st round pick ended up being Jiri Kulich who is one of the Sabres highly touted prospects. The Sabres ended up doing extremely well with this trade. Reinhart has also been great for FLA so they should be happy with the trade as well. But keep in mind, at the time GMKA didn't have many options/teams to trade Reinhart too. He was kind of dealt a shitty hand and had to do the best he could. Reinhart wasn't going to stay so we needed to make a decision. I call this one an even trade for both sides but give GMKA a ton of credit here and am happy with the prospects we got.
- Nov 2021: Sabres acquire Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs, 2022 1st round pick, 2023 2nd round pick from VGK for Jack Eichel and a 2023 3rd. VGK obviously gets the better player but due to the circumstance GMKA had to deal with, he did a fantastic job. Tuch is a top 6/top line player and Krebs, while we expected more offense, has still played good and is a fan favourite. Hes still only 22 with a lot more potential. The 2022 1st turned into Noah Ostlund. GMKA didn't have much to work with there and his hand was pretty forced. Due to the circumstances he made a great trade.
- Mar 2023: Sabres acquire Jordan Greenway from MIN for 2023 2nd round pick and 2024 5th round pick. So far this has been a great trade for the Sabres. Greenway has been fantastic.
- There are some other smaller trades but I didn't want to go through them all. To check them out head here: https://www.capfriendly.com/trades/sabres. The ones I mentioned are the big ones. All the others are small, sideways moves IMO.
So in my opinion when it comes to staff hires and trades, GMKA has done really well so far. Has he 100% won every trade? No. But he hasn't got fleeced and has come out ahead multiple times. Now lets look at a few mistakes I think GMKA has made so far:
- The first one is I think he took a little long to fire Ralph Kruger. I remember at the time it was weeks overdue. He eventually did it though and replaced Ralph with Donny.
- I think after the Ralph firing I didn't really have any issues with GMKA until this off season. I don't have the doomer mentality against GMKA like some in this subreddit but I do think he made a few mistakes. I do think re-signing Okposo/Girgensons this off-season was a mistake. These seem like 'thank you' contracts or contracts to keep them around 1 more year to keep the vibes going. If this year has shown anything, we could've benefited from a 4th line re-vamp.
- I think the Erik Johnson signing was poor. His numbers were poor last year so we kinda knew what we were getting. But hes a vet and GMKA thought the adding defensive depth would help. Clearly it has not worked out.
- To a lesser extent the Clifton FA signing. While I don't want to be really critical of Clifton because hes playing with Erik Johnson on a nightly basis, he has not been great or good so far. Again, I am pumping my breaks on him as I'd like to see how he plays with a better D partner.
To me those are GMKAs mistakes so far as a GM. His first 3 years were very good but this off-season is where many people seem to be angry with him. Now lets go over a few quick things before we move on from the ownemanagement:
- GMKA choice to not sign a Goalie in the off-season was the correct move. There were no good goalies available. Look at Kopi with Ottawa and that terrible contract. He made the correct choice to not budge and risk us signing a terrible contract and fucking us later on.
- People say we should of signed another forward in the off-season and I think that's fine to think but I don't think it was 100% needed. I think if GMKA knew the injuries and poor play from Okposo/Girgensons would happen, he would of signed another forward. If we weren't so injured this wouldn't be as big an issue. Having just Quinn out doesn't justify getting more top 9 help. Most people wouldn't have wanted that and would've rather had one of the young kids up. In hindsight of course another top 9 forward would be pretty hot right now.
- Side note. Going into the season our healthy forwards here: Thompson, Tuch, Skinner, Cozens, Peterka, Mitts, Greenway, Krebs, Girgensons, Okposo, Benson, Jost and Olofsson. Thats 13 players. Let's say Girgensons and Okposo played like they played last year. Perfectly fine, acceptable 4th liners, your weak links in the lineup would be Jost/Olofsson as the 12th/13th spot. Let's say Olofsson is traded. At best we have 12 forwards with one top 6 on IR, so signing one forward could make sense. But this signing is going to be a depth playebottom 6 guy and I'm not sure how much that would move the dial. GMKA was never going to sign a top 6 guy in FA or trade. So while this could be seen as a mistake, I don't think not having an extra 3rd or 4th line guy drastically helps us.
- Let me make this extremely clear: GMKA has constructed a roster good enough to make the playoffs. Full stop. Even with the injures. The Sabres problems is not a personnel issue and lack of good hockey players. GMKA has done his job in that department. Core players like Mitts, Cozens, Tuch, Skinner, Dahlin, Power etc should be good enough to win. Is the bottom 6 going to lack in some areas? Sure. But plenty of teams have dodgy bottom 6s.
Okay that's all for GMKA. Theres much more I could talk about but I'd be here all day.
The Roster Let's breakdown this roster. Starting with the forwards:
- The good: Thompson, Tuch, Skinner, Cozens, Peterka, Quinn, Mitts, Benson, Greenway and Krebs.
- The okay: Jost, Olofsson
- The bad: Girgensons, Okposo
The Defense
- The good: Dahlin, Power, R. Johnson & Joker
- The Meh: Mattias Samuelsson
- The Bad: E. Johnson, Connor Clifton, Jacob Bryson
In my opinion this is pretty self explanatory. We all know who the black holes are and who the bright spots are.
The problems with the roster:
- Erik Johnson & Kyle Okposo getting way to much usage and playing on a nightly basis. They are the worst two players on the team and just having them off the ice would help drastically.
- Injuries. Injuries had played a part in all of this of course. Quinn out half a season and Thompson out like 2 months does not help things. Minor injuries to other players like Greenway, Cozens, Sammy, etc did not help the situation. It's safe to say if we were healthy we would have a better record and a bit less problems.
- Clifton has not played up to expectations. Like mentioned above, this has to be partly due to having Erik has his defense partner. But it's also due to poor play. If he improves his play and can be a really effective 3rd pair, this helps the team a ton.
- Young, inconsistent roster. Probably the most important one. We are still young! The youngest team in the league in fact. With this comes inconsistency on a nightly basis. Our best goalie is still very young for goalies (24). I think as the team grows and gets old, we will by default just get better and become more consistent.
It's safe to say, skill wise this roster has enough to win. Could GMKA added another forward? Sure. That would of resulted in 3-4 more wins this year? I don't know man. The main players on this team haven't stepped up. This isn't a roster issue I'm telling you that right now. For me I really like the roster construction. I think this off-season GMKA will focus on the bottom 6 with Okposo, Girgensons, Jost and Olofsson all gone and all playing those roles. I think our D-core will be much better next year having Dahlin, Power, Sammy, R. Johnson, Joker and Clifton as the 6 starters. I expect us to keep UPL and sign/trade for another goalie (if a realistic option is available). I think all of this helps us improve. It's easy to find the spots on the roster to improve. What's not as easy to talk about is what we'll be talking about next. The coaching!
Coaching Before we begin. Let's disclaimer this by saying I don't coach Hockey. Never have. So this means theres just going to be things about coaching and in a locker room that I might just not get. I accept that. So take my opinions with a grain of salt.
Let's start with the staff breakdown. You can find the staff here:
https://www.nhl.com/sabres/team/staff:
- Head Coach - Don Granato: Rookie coach at the NHL level.
- Assistant Coach - Mike Bales: Goalie coach. Not a rookie. Has been an assistant in the NHL before.
- Assistant Coach - Jason Christie: Rookie assistant coach at the NHL level. Coached the OHL and the ECHL before joining the Sabres. Was a Donny hire as they are friends. Christie was chosen over Mike Peca. Peca was our AHL coach and wanted to make the jump, since Donny didn't want him he went to NYR.
- Assistant Coach - Matt Ellis: Rookie assistant coach at the NHL level. 4th line grinder for the Sabres when he played. Was a hard worker every shift.
- Assistant Coach - Marty Wilford: 3 years of NHL assistant coaching experience before joining the Sabres
- Video Coach - Justin White: Rookie assistant coach in the NHL. Was in the AHL previously.
- Video Coordinator - Matt Smith: No coaching experience I can find before joining the Sabres in 2022.
- Assistant NHL Coaching Staff - Dan Girardi: Rookie NHL coach at the NHL level. Good player though.
So on the Sabres coaching staff Donny, Christie, Ellis, White and Smith all had 0 NHL coaching experience before joining the Sabres AND Donny hired them all. Girardi also had 0 NHL coaching experience before joining the Sabres but was here before Donny. Bales and Wilford were also not rookies. 5/8 of the coaching staff are rookies.
Let's talk about Donny. I'd first like to start off by thanking him for that hes done so far. Mitts, Thompson, Dahlin and Greenway have all thrived under his tenure. Hes been great at the development aspect of things. I felt very comfortable the last few years with him managing the kids and thought he was the best for the job. But I do think this year has been rough for him and highlighted some holes/problems in his system and staff.
Some problems I feel are the coaching staffs fault:
- Where has the offense gone from last year? Last year we were zipping up and down the lineup with pretty much the same group of guys minus Quinn. People will say "well we've been playing more defensively so offense was sacrificed." It's just simply not true. We are not better defensively this year compared to last year. Just not true. No metric will support this. Not only can't we score but we get scored on a lot. Donny has tried to be more defensive but it's just made us worse overall and has not even improved our D.
- The Powerplay is just so bad I don't know what to say. The talent is there. This isn't a talent issue. It's a system issue. It's a gameplan issue. Matt Ellis does the PP I believe and he has not done a good job. IDK why hes doing the PP when he was a 4th line grinder at the NHL level, but I digress.
- The PK is starting to regress and the coaching staff is starting to see Erik Johnson is not the PKer they thought. Again this isn't a personnel issue.
These are the big bullet points where I think the coaching staff can do better and should do better. This is entirely on them. Next lets just look at Donny specifically and issues I think he has:
- The big one. He refuses to sit Erik Johnson and Kyle Okposo and its entirely because they are veterans in the league. I don't know what they contribute in the locker room as I am not there but whatever it is, it's not translating into wins. Donny's inability to keep the vets accountable is a big red flag. When any of the younger, more skilled players has a bad game they sit (See R. Johnson). But when any of the vets have poor games they don't. This is now how a team should be run.
- Why is Kyle Okposo playing on PP2 AND the PK1. Are you kidding me? If theres one thing Donny has done that's fire-able (and I don't want him fired) it's this. He uses Kyle Okposo like hes one of the most important forwards on this team. Why is Okposo on PP2 over Krebs? Pick literally any player on the PK outside of Okposo as he cannot/does not play defense on 5v5 so why would this change on the PK? Last night we were on PP and Tuch took a shot to the hand and went to the bench (20 sec into the PP). Who comes off the bench for him? Kyle Okposo. Give me a break. Kyle has more playing time then Benson yesterday.
- His lineups are so weird. Examples: Why is Rosen sitting just so Biro can play 3C/4C? What does Biro provide lmao? Why is Krebs not 3C with Rosen and Greenway yesterday? Greenway got hurt ofc but he didn't know that when setting the lines. Our 3rd line was Jost-Biro-Olofsson. What. I can make you a better 3rd line right this second. Greenway - Krebs - Olofsson/Jost. Every night its just weird lineups that make zero sense. Stop playing E. Johnson/Clifton. It doesn't work.
- 11-7. I'm not even going to say if we should run the 11-7 or not. What I'm going to address is WHY we played 11-7. Lets get this clear right from the bat: It's not for any other reason other than Donny couldn't make the hard decision to sit one of Clifton/E. Johnson. It's not for any other reason. He simply just can't sit Erik. R. Johnson sat last game which was perfect for Donny because he could roll 6D. The problem is my coach cant make tough decisions. It's not about 11-7. Its why we were running it.
- His player usage and in game management is really bad. Like mentioned above, putting Okposo is important positions on the PP2 and PK1. I don't know if you guys remember but against WSH when Wilson scored in the 3rd with like a min left, Okposo and E. Johnson were on the ice for the final mins of that game. That can't happen Donny. That's a terrible mistake. Yesterday he had Samuelsson, Erik AND Okposo on the PK together. Of course Carolina scored. What is that group of guys? He doesn't call timeouts to save his life. There are so many times I think we should call a timeout to slow the game down a bit but it never happens. He doesn't pull his goalies. They could let in 10 and they'd still play. Its 3-0 and the goalie has played bad. Pull him. Just little things like this. When we weren't looking to win it was a bit less noticeable but now its glaring.
So those are my issues with the coaching staff and Donny. I think the coaching staff is way way way way to inexperienced. Especially when the head coach is also a rookie. Do I want Donny fired? No way. I believe coaches can grow just like players. Hes learning on the fly just like everyone else. This is his first season of really trying to go for it. I don't think firing him helps us. I do think the assistant coaches need to be fired though and replaced with quality, experienced coaches. I need someone new for the Powerplay. I just need experience behind the bench because our team is so young we can't have the blind leading the blind here. I'd like to see some changes in that department over the offseason.
In Conclusion In conclusion, I do not think the Pegulas are the problem for the Sabres success in 2023. Sure you can point to things in their past where they made mistakes, but as of today they are not the issue. They hired GMKA who has been great for the Sabres. GMKA has brought in fantastic people for his front office, drafted incredibly well and has shown to be able to hold his own in trades. The mistakes hes made come during this off-season. Especially with the Girgensons/Okposo re-signings. A new 4th line would of been nice and possibly 1 more forward for the top 9. Him not signing a goalie was the right move considering who was available. Overall I think hes the best GM we have had for over 10 years and I would nothing to do with people wanting him fired. Hes been great.
The players skill is not the issue here. We have plenty of skill to win hockey games. Injuries have hurt us but we should have the ability to fight through that. For me, the performance on ice has a lot to do with the coaching staff and how inexperienced they are. I think Donny has had a lot of struggles as well and he needs to address how he utilizes players. He needs to stop leaning on bad vets and be able to sit them if they are not playing well. I'd personally like to see some of the coaching staff behind Donny to be changed this off-season. I don't think Donny deserves to be fired yet at all.
The combination of the players being young and inexperienced, the coaching staff being inexperienced, some players not living up to expecations and playing bad, and injuries all lead up to where we are right now. It's not the owner. It's a bit on the GM (off-season), a bit on the players, and a lot on the coaching staff.
