I have an opportunity to relocate to Las Vegas for work from Arizona. I have been with the company for 17 years and plan to retire with a pension. My current situation seems like golden handcuffs. I have had initial conversations about salary, which would increase by 10%. There is a standard relocation package: two months of salary, moving costs, a house-finding trip, 30 days of hotel, moving all my stuff, etc.
My wife and I currently own a home that is like none other for the money. RV Garage with another two-car garage. Full A/C shop worth of tools and equipment to make anything. Beautiful 3K SF home, pool, infrared sauna, office, an oasis of a yard, etc. Of course, this has a low-interest rate and has more than tripled in price since we closed in 2017. Neighbors' homes are listing and selling above $1.5 million.
I am having some serious issues knowing that I want to continue to grow in my role with my organization. However, the house is worth 10 times my salary, and I wonder if my new salary is even worth it. I know that I will be able to grow when I move to our corporate office, meaning more opportunity and money; I just can't seem to put the numbers together and convince my wife that this is possible. Long story short, the pool builder had a meeting with the concrete supplier and come to find out, the contractor for the pool company had them add 20 extra gallons above the maximum water that they had already added (the supplier gave me the paperwork and had it documented). It’s my understanding that this is extremely excessive. I intend to build a balcony/patio on top of this concrete, and had footings poured into the concrete. I’m fighting with the pool company, and it looks like it’s going to get legal involvement unfortunately because they have denied any wrongdoing (there’s a lot of other issues as well). Hello! I am new to Tucson and am job hunting for case manager, care coordinator, intake coordinator positions.
I was looking to stay working for the county or state, as I was in my home state, however the state of Arizona’s pay is… horrific. $17 an hour for a case manager position?
I’ve looked into the for-profit areas because (I need to bring home the bacon) and they’re all terrible positions that seem to go after the uneducated , providing FREE services for a cost.
I am currently looking for non-profit companies where their mission is clear and for the greater good, so far I have found Emerge! DV center, Youth of their own, council on aging,
Can anyone point me to the right direction towards non-profit companies that working for wouldn’t feel like selling my soul to the devil?

If you book with Jetsmart, a Chilean flight company, it's not uncommon for them to cancel the flight and not give the money back. For us and others online, you're gonna have to fight to get that refund.
What happened to us was that we booked an expensive trip for two people about a month in advance, trip got cancelled one week later, and after 6 months and a lot of work we finally got the money back.

Surprisingly, the customer service of JetSmart appears to be helpful and they do respond to phone calls. The one flight did take with them was pleasant, with a new airplane.
How we got the money back
- First, we followed JetSmart's procedure for obtaining a refund after a cancelled flight.
- We contacted their support by phone several times, using Skype for international calls.
- We also created several support cases via email.

So I'm on call for work this week and last evening I got an alarm about a technical problem at the lab (I'm a lab technician). The maintenance company couldn't access the server f to see what was the problem so I had to go to the lab to check it and fill them in on the problem.
The FU part is, I was making myself soup at this point. My pot was heating on the electric cooking plate when I answered the call and, instead of getting it off the plate, I just turned the heat wheel to the off position.
Or so I thought. I actually turned the heat all the way up.
I then left to the lab, leaving my pot unattended because my GF is at her mother's for the week.
The technical problem was a solenoid valve not answering on a nitrogen liquid tank. I'm a lab technician in BIOLOGY so I didn't get it either.
It took an hour and a half to determine what it was and how to fix it with the maintenance guy on the phone (had to resort to keep to parts in place with a rubber band, not kidding), and then I had to call a biologist to see if it could wait until Monday for a proper repair.
I went back home, opened the door and my poor dog ran out of the apartment, completely panicked.
That's when I noticed the smell. I ran to the kitchen and I saw a smoking cooking pot, soup stains all over the wall and the counter, and a strong burning smell.
I quickly realized I could have started a fire, destroyed the apartment and most importantly killed my dog, even if the fire alarm had alerted my neighbours.
I immediately turned everything off, put the cooking pot in the sink with water to cool it, and opened the windows. The vegetables had burned and formed a thick black crust in the bottom of the pot, and my plastic ladle and melted and fused with it. I tried to get it off today but I gave up after an hour of nothing budging.
My dog was shaking and she wouldn't go back in the apartment, the poor thing was terrified.
By the time the smell was gone, my dog was calmed and and everything back to almost normal, it was past midnight and I still hadn't eaten. I ended up ordering a pizza, and of course it costed extra for delivery after midnight.
I spent my morning cleaning up my mess, trying to salvage the pot then giving up, and finding new spot where the soup stains got.
My dog still won't enter the kitchen and the smell is still there, even if it's fainter.
My GF is gonna be pissed.
TL;DR: Answered a call from work while I was making soup, left to work with the soup still on the plate, went home 2 hours later to a burnt soup, a ruined pot, a disgusting kitchen and a traumatized dog. All because I didn't check if the plate was actually off.

My boyfriend has been unemployed for 6 months and we’ve had several arguments about how he’s driving himself into debt and refusing to get a job.
He keeps saying he’s gonna get a job, he’s gonna show me he wants to build a future with me… well guess what: the entire last month every time I asked him if he had applied for jobs he would say yes but it wasn’t true. He showed me his phone today and he went an entire MONTH without applying for jobs.
We moved in together last month and I told him I wouldn’t move in with him unless he was proactively looking for a job. He told he was… so basically I moved in thinking that he was applying for jobs when it was a lie. I’m really a fool.
I want to break up with him because honestly I feel as if there’s no more trust in this relationship.
I feel manipulated, betrayed, hurt. I feel like he was my best friend and my family and he went behind my back and did this.
I feel like I’m being harsh but at the same time he saw my cry multiple times about how I was unhappy with his lack of ambition and job searching and he spent the last month telling me he was looking just so I’d stop crying. This went on for a MONTH even though I had weekly conversations with him about it.
I feel lost and lonely and I’m in a foreign county and I just don’t know where to go and what to do. I’m so blown away because he’s been so kind and loving to me and I would never think he would lie.
He was saying this entire time how no companies would hire him and how he felt frustrated when in reality he wasn’t even applying in the first place!!
I asked why he lied and he just shrugged his shoulders and said “idk”. He said he just broke the agreement we had about no lies in the relationship and no particular reason which hurts even more because he did this without any remorse or consideration for my feelings.
We had hours long arguments over this and honestly I’m just done with this. He did apply for multiple jobs today and yesterday but that’s because I was at home with him and asked to do it.
He just stares at me when I argue and cry and have mental breakdowns and when the argument is over he gets on the video games and I go to my room and cry.
I can’t even be near him now.
Is this salvageable? Is this the end? I feel so depressed.
TLDR; boyfriend lied about looking for jobs for a month and now I don’t think I can move forward with this relationship.

- I was contracted to work for a company under conditions that mirrored those of a full-time employee (reporting from 9 AM to 5 PM), leading me to believe that I was misclassified as an independent contractor.
- My contract has since ended, and I have submitted a final invoice with an outstanding amount of around $3,000.
- Payment and LLC Structure:
- The contract was with an LLC specifically used by the company to hire contractors. This LLC is the entity that handles payments.
- However, the work I performed and the projects I developed were for different LLCs owned by the same individuals, which are the actual businesses interacting with the public.
- Location Details:
- I am based in Arizona.
- The LLC responsible for hiring contractors and handling payments is based in Florida.
- Concerns about Payment:

2024.06.09 05:06 zactschp2 I have a carfax report on a used car I’m interested in with a flood/rebuilt title. Is there a way to track down more detailed info?
As the title says, there is a 2023 Hyundai Palisade Limited I'm interested in. Per the carfax report, the vehicle was serviced on 11/21/2023 with 18,298 mi. Then on 12/18/2023 it was declared to be a total loss due to flood damage. More water damage reported on 12/20/2023. Title was updated on 01/18/2024 and vehicle purchase reported on 01/23/2024. Title or registration was then issued to insurance company on 01/26/2024 and on same day was given a salvage and flood damaged title. Declared a total loss vehicle due to flood damage on 02/13/2024 with odometer reading of 19,797 mi. Vehicle service report on 04/29/2024 with odometer reading of 19,921 mi. Current odometer is 20,300. Is this worth taking a shot on? I can have private mechanic look at it. Any way to tell if it's a safe buy or at least get more details about the flooding and why it was totaled?
EDIT: Is it realistically possible for a mechanic to give a thorough assessment of whether he/she thinks it would be safe to drive and that the critical systems of the car would likely work?

Late 2020 India banned DJI to sell drones in India.
Before the same I had DJI pocket 2, action and tello drone.
Mimo App worked fine and website too. You could buy most stuff from DJI online and offline.
After the ban, getting drones was super difficult. Ban was mostly on drones other DJI stuff was available.
Drone sellers might appear online for sale buy they were mostly scammmers.
At offline stores you won't find drones displayed, but if you know the guy he will help you get one.
Because of this drones had to be smuggled.
So now DJI drones cost 2x.
To clarify the BAN was on sale and service from DJI. Flying was not.
So how does it affect.
Once you have the drone, you can register it with official Indian regulators, you can get specific permissions without local police issue ( bruh local police uses DJI drones daily for search, rescue, surveillance etc that too expensive ones).
Even tough you can't buy them straight from DJI, all new and old Dji drones can been seen in the registration list.
Now this is the most painful part.
PARTS AND SERVICES.
Some dealers who were authorised DJI service places. Still unofficially reply, but parts are either salvaged from other crashes or imported through back channel from China. This makes a simple rubber seal repair cost excess of $150.

TL;DR : 23(M) in bay area trying to figure out how to position myself for the future in order to survive the shit show without too many scars and be able to be apart of the rebuilding process in an impactful way. What skills/direction do people think are good bets for myself and people my age or anyone reading/interacting with this?
Gonna share my Situation for background as well as perspective on areas that I see decline in across the board. Feel free to build off anything you resonate with or disagree with.
Boomers are locked into houses with low rates and massively high equity but instead of passing that on to the next generation they choose to lord it over everyone and tell people to not buy coffee because that's obviously gonna make the difference in terms of being able to afford a downpayment. Telling everyone to work harder when they have literally have had it the easiest of any generation in human history without showing any gratitude or recognition of that fact.
Myself personally I am a little neutral in terms of if or if not the dollar will remain the world reserve currency for the next 150 years. My gut would say that it won't but that being said things don't really look too much better anywhere else in the world. People talk about BRIC but but they all have worse problems than the US. India is a shithole with poor infrastructure hence so many Indians moving the America specifically the bay area but also they consistently get outsourced by Americans once companies realize they need an ounce of quality in their service or product. The high quality ones leave and the low quality ones stay. Both China and Russia while boasting huge amounts of natural resources and reasonable militaries have dire demographic problems and have been lying about their numbers for years. Europe doesn't look any better either. Realistically I know it sucks in America but it kinda is better than anywhere else. What makes me hesitate is the cycles of history that Ray Dalio talks about where the world reserve currency is kind of destined to change every X amount of years. Have heard some interesting contrasting theories on this specifically the Dollar milkshake theory which I suggest checking out.
Things also don't seem to be getting easier. The pandemic was extremely profitable for everyone but ever since then it has been harder and harder with no real let up or cooling off. I don't see how this can continue without turning to resentment or potentially complete stagnation since young people really don't have any reason to work. They are unable to find someone to have a family with in a healthy way. Unable to afford a house. Can't keep a job to no fault of their own. And can't afford to have kids.
Also the general lack of beautiful design in people's lives makes our lives even more dull than they currently are. Living or working in a McMansion that looks like the inside of a Chick-fil-a is fun for the first five days until its not and then you are back to keeping up with the Jones' in order to fit in: falling back into consumerist culture. I think debt and peoples personal finances are being stretched which makes this problem slightly disappear more and hurt the corporations' pockets but it doesn't solve the problem just reveals the cancer underneath.
Another huge issue is homelessness and specifically illegal immigration which I think partly is done by the Democratic party currently in order to bolster their election chances with November coming not realizing that they are turning away their existing demographics. Another feature of homelessness specifically but also crime and illegal immigration is it inadvertently destroys third spaces which are currently and rightly so being talked about a lot. I will go into this more on the next section.
In terms of physical health again, I am proud of my generation(and others) for caring more about the products that they are putting into their body. Seeds oils, red dye, processed food, micro-plastics, animal and plant products raised in the right way, etc. However the way the food industry is currently set up, being able to have access to clean healthy food is a lot of times unaffordable to most people or the food itself is up for speculation by the media because why would industries do studies on products of hygenic methods that can't make money? Again this seems to be an issue that there is awareness and information on but day by day it seems to be harder and harder to give your body what it needs to feel good based on the current decaying environment.
I'm also going to add a spiritual section here because I feel it needs to be added. We need to hold religious organizations more accountable. I am seeing more and more people being turned away from ideologies that are legitimately beneficial to their lives because of poor leadership, predatory behavior, and fraudulent/scam activities. This may be a result of a society being submerged in decadence but it is really disheartening seeing people being moved away from spirituality because it has been weaponised for the personal gain of those at the top. Feel that needed to be added since it is something I want to engage with more meaningfully in the future.
I said it before but this will be the breaking point in my opinion. If people don't feel like no matter how hard they work, they won't be able to get what they want in terms of normal human desires and needs; Then they will fight and rebel for it which is where I think we are headed, especially concerning young dudes.
I feel we are headed towards extremely turbulent times within the next 4 years. With the boomers dying and leaving the workforce to the rising animosity and resentment that younger people feel with the system regardless of your political ideology it seems we are moving towards some kind of global or civil war. We already see China preparing to invade Taiwan, Russia looking to move further west for expansion and I think similar conflict will happen in the United States. The United States and its dollar are weakening by the day which is why you see the dollar being removed from countries trading oil and why there have been more international conflicts like Armenia, Israel, and Ukraine with more to come.
We are due for a war , turbulent time period, rebalancing, whatever you want to call it but its coming(@ Ray dalio cycles of history)probably this November if I had to guess. I feel like I am gifted to be able to see this stuff and put it into words as many of you guys reading this also probably are but I am feeling lost currently and don't want to lose hope. I know that this is an opportunity for me to go through a hard time and become stronger because of it and hopefully become a responsible and respectable steward for the future when the rebuilding happens assuming I survive without too many scars. But what do I do now? How should I act? Should I go back to college and continue to try and go the old path with the clarity of what I think will happen waiting for my moment to adapt? Or should I be proactive and try something new in order to put myself in a more advantageous position when things inevitably get turned upside down? Combination of both?
My current focus is on my body & mind in terms of food, drink, substances, exercise phone use, media, information, agendas, and mental frameworks since that is all I can realistically invest into currently. I'm naturally an over thinker and a pessimist but think it is important to take the white pill on this one and look to the future with hope in terms of seeing opportunity in the decay of the current flawed system we are in regardless of the fact that I feel as though myself and people around my age currently have it pretty tough right now across the board. I'm emphasizing this because I feel as though this reddit(especially the posts) sometimes just reports the pain and fear instead of trying brainstorm the best ways to adapt and handle what we currently face. I want to have a wife, kids, and a family and feel it is my responsibility to make the best of what I have and be positive in order to get what I want in this life.

Housing market is obviously fucked right for various reasons economically. The new houses that are being built are all of terrible quality by companies such as DR Horton in order to maximize profits which lead to inefficiency when it comes to home value retention and resell ability if they are able to sell at all. The new construction are like I said all shitty but are also being built in general in really shitty areas that don't have high qualities of life or massive weather problems among other cultural, energy, water, immigration or political issues(ie. Texas, Florida, Arizona, etc.) Not saying that other places in the country (New York & California) are perfect or even close to it, but people moving like they are moving to these places is like putting a band aid over the wound(the economy) instead getting to the root of the problem and currently we can see the result of this in said areas. Rising Unaffordability, crime, insurance rates, property taxes(Daddy government always gets his), and general gimmicky shit. Now those same people are moving back to California or New York if they can afford it or most of the time north to the rust belt to do the same thing with probably the same outcome. The Dollar:
Its been talked about on here non-stop but national debt is absurd and currently unrepayable unless..... we just print more. Which is what the government does. I don't know if this is fueled by private banks( Look up private banks effects on history specifically during world wars; here is a solid video). But lowering the value of tomorrows dollar to pay off todays debt seems to be the government's only plan in terms of paying things off. This strategy is the only reason the media is able to manufacture delusion in the populous that stocks are high and real estate won't crash. What's really going on is the the prices are staying the same relatively or slightly increasing but that is because the value of the dollar is going down not because the value of the asset is going up. Job Market:
Job Market is ridiculous especially for younger people my age. Even my colleagues who went to an alright university are having a hard time getting and keeping a job due to the market. There are tons of ghost jobs that don't actually exist and are only posted in order to make it seem like the company is currently profitable. Just to get a job you not only need to apply to probably around a thousand jobs with a 3% response rate but also you need to be messaging recruiters and people who work at the company in order to get a referral. Even if you were able to get a job, most people I know are searching for another job whether it be part time or full time because they are afraid of being laid off.Things also don't seem to be getting easier. Design and Consumerism are in my opinion evidence of a decaying society currently. There is very little differentiation in design from cars to houses to public or government buildings to art and even products at retail stores. Everything is designed with speed and Price in mind which spirals consumerism further downward(look up refinement culture on google). This promotes things like fast fashion and previously mentioned single use products which make corporations a large amount of money but isn't sustainable for the environment or for individual people's wallets.Also the general lack of beautiful design in people's lives makes our lives even more dull than they currently are. Crime obviously is increasingly on the rise and not just with violent crimes. Shoplifting as you know is a huge issue as well as personal stealing to such a prevalence that the sentences on those crimes are being reduced because prisons and jails are being maxed out completely. Being able to socialize and hang out with people casually and at no to low cost is becoming increasingly impossible. Being out in public now costs money and that cost is rising day by day exacerbating isolation especially among young people who don't have that much money do begin with. This is a huge reason why I think young people are still willing to go to college the way they still are. even if they go into debt they want access to these third spaces to improve their social, physical and mental Health. I KNOW, myself included, that young people are desperate for third spaces and community even though many are addicted to their phones, don't have good social skills or it costs a significant amount of money to engage in it which is unfortunate and leads to people kind of giving up or at least having a general feeling of hopelessness. The predatory nature of social media companies and targeted advertisers don't help this issue at all either leading to worse mental health as well as more consumerism. Dating/Families:

The destruction of third spaces, addiction to phones, predatory corporations profiting of loneliness(regardless of sex), inability to buy a house, inability to afford kids, etc have really made people sit back and wonder is any of it really worth it. Should I just indulge in primal desires since my self actualization needs seem so unattainable @ Maslow.I said it before but this will be the breaking point in my opinion. Grew up in Middle class home in San Jose and had a pretty normal childhood. Don't remember anything too ridiculous around 2008 but we were also renting as well. Things however really ramped up when I got into college specifically during the Pandemic. I spiraled downward and had severe mental and physical issues that resulted in me hitting rock bottom(don't want to play oppression olympics here). Now I'm currently heavily considering going back to finish my degree in Philosophy just to have it. Afterwards looking at sales, one of the trades, or any other opportunity that presents itself in order to get by while things get adjusted.I feel we are headed towards extremely turbulent times within the next 4 years. I've read a lot of comments here that hate on Trump, pretty typical of Reddit mind you, and I'd like to say this post is for sharing my experience only. I don't care why you want to leave the US, if anything Trump haters leaving the US would make me more willing to move back. So, please leave, just don't come to where I'm living.
Now, about 1 year ago I moved to Japan on a study abroad with the intention of using that as a launchpad into getting a full residence work permit in Japan for a highly paying (by Japanese standards, anyway) international company. I succeeded in that endeavor as soon as I finished my study abroad, which I didn't realize was statistically exceedingly rare for someone in my situation, but it has worked for the best for me all the same.
The most difficult part for me was switching from my student status to a work permit, which involved going back for graduation from university to move the things I couldn't bring with me on my first semi-temporary move such as my giant PC, TV and sound set into my checked luggage (all of which survived ANA by the way, highly recommend that airline). After that, I had to come back to Japan on a re-entry permission, go to immigration and pick up my new residence card which wasn't possible until my undergraduate degree was officially "conferred" upon me. So I waited around until I was able to do that and successfully picked up my new residence card which activated my new visa status.
In all of this time back home I rented a storage place a block from my house pre-paid for two years for about $1250 and applied for my pistol and semi-automatic rifle permits in New York before I left. The fact that I was claiming to be a "part-time resident" definitely sussed them out, but they allowed the application because I told them if I ever move back full-time I don't want to be waiting around to take possession of my firearms in NY again. Ideally, if I were to move back at all I'd go to Arizona or someplace to own NFA guns instead, but the permit was useful regardless since I visit family there at least once annually now.
Life in Japan has been great, I got to know all of the top government, NPO, business owners and foreign lawyers in Tokyo; my home in based in Tokyo so I get to benefit from JR and Tokyo Metro's extensive railway system, work even pays for my commuter pass (I live intentionally far away from the office which extends its use case and pays for my bus commute to the station which in turn gives me access to the whole bus line) and I live not too far away from Tokyo DisneyLand being on the eastern side of Tokyo.
Everything here is still fairly cheap, I do need to buy a bike and I'm still working on converting my NYS driver's license over to a Japanese license, but I've been able to use my IDP once while I was moving my belongings over to my new apartment across Tokyo. My social life has also been fairly healthy compared to most new expats, dating is a little rough but other than that there is no lack of friends.\
So why did I leave? I had credible-enough threats of violence waged against me back home, and I didn't even recognize the place in which I've grown up in these past twenty plus years. Additionally, I like Asian culture and living in a country where I'm the minority has definitely made me the protagonist in my own little life's story, that isn't me being facetious either, so much good has happened from this move. I still do occasionally help with US-related things. I work with American commerce abroad, I visit the US military bases on special occasions in which my SOFA status friends invite me over and I volunteer for some US charities here in Japan.
Some tricky things that have arisen are the following:
-I run a business in Japan and hold multiple bank accounts worldwide including HK which has caused for a cluster fuck of a tax situation with the IRS. Unless, of course, I want to get my U.S. Passport revoked and be de facto stateless abroad (technically an Italian citizen by descent too but that process is taking forever) I have to put up with this shit.
-Renewals of my NY pistol permit aren't friendly to majority-year non-resident citizens. I lived downstate which results in me not having to just recertify with the state every 5 years for a "lifetime" license, but do a full renewal every 3 years with the local PD. This is pretty simple with a VPN and a credit card by just paying online, but I cannot upgrade to full concealed carry yet until the state rids of the training requirement or clarifies that it is only required to be done once, something neither the state nor the courts have yet done. I'm in no hurry because with the sensitive locations clause, every CCW is effectively just a glorified premises permit.
-Renewal of DL not an issue when renewing online with a credit card again, but every 15 or 20 years I need to submit a new photograph to the DMV and every 8 years since its a REAL ID I need to get my vision checked in NY.
-I apply for a lot of credit cards (over 20 at this point) to churn their SUBs which help fund me flying ANA and JAL in first and business class between JFK and HND. Sometimes, these issuers (aside from Amex) after uncooperative with me having a overseas address which means I need to phone up my parents to receive the card for me and for me to figure out how I am to use it contactlessly so I can meet minimum spend and get my next free flight home.
-I always have to say "I intend to return" on UOCAVA application forms, otherwise I can only vote in federal elections. I still voted in my local school board/budget elections when I last visited so I could write in all of the candidates and vote no on all of the budget proposals. Why would I want to give that up when I can legally say I "returned" so therefore had an intention to at some point in the course of human history? :>
-The biggest issue: my family is getting older and it's not too unlikely that my grandparents could die and I would not necessarily be able to take the time off to visit their funerals. Hopefully, this doesn't happen for quite some time.
Would I move back?
Well, no, not permanently. I can't agree that it is the freest, but I can agree it is the greatest in the sense I can't go anywhere besides perhaps Russia, China or Afghanistan and other obscure countries to get away from the US' economic pull. Every time I go to open a bank account, brokerage account or make a big purchase or sale the US tax authorities always get involved somehow. We can seriously thank Obama for that one.
And lastly, would I ever renounce my US citizenship?
No, never. Not officially at least. If I happened to become de facto stateless as a political dissident or for tax reasons, etc. I still wouldn't give it up for Japanese nationality because Japanese nationality would cause me to lose Italian/EU nationality as well and my children could never benefit from all that comes with no immigration controls in the US for school and work in the future. If I ever needed to yeet out of Japan in the event of a national emergency like the Fukushima disaster, I would lose that ability immediately. And I would lose my US voting rights. Lastly, renunciation results in a disqualification to ever own a firearm in the US again, not sure how constitutional that remains to be.
I've heard of stories in which some Americans left for Japan, naturalized as Japanese citizens and somehow found their way back in the USA later in life as non-citizens. I know how shit the US legal immigration system is and I never want to voluntarily put myself through that where it is avoidable. The Japanese immigration system while strict and murky in some ways, is pretty understanding of individual circumstances by comparison.

Now, about 1 year ago I moved to Japan on a study abroad with the intention of using that as a launchpad into getting a full residence work permit in Japan for a highly paying (by Japanese standards, anyway) international company. I succeeded in that endeavor as soon as I finished my study abroad, which I didn't realize was statistically exceedingly rare for someone in my situation, but it has worked for the best for me all the same.
The most difficult part for me was switching from my student status to a work permit, which involved going back for graduation from university to move the things I couldn't bring with me on my first semi-temporary move such as my giant PC, TV and sound set into my checked luggage (all of which survived ANA by the way, highly recommend that airline). After that, I had to come back to Japan on a re-entry permission, go to immigration and pick up my new residence card which wasn't possible until my undergraduate degree was officially "conferred" upon me. So I waited around until I was able to do that and successfully picked up my new residence card which activated my new visa status.
In all of this time back home I rented a storage place a block from my house pre-paid for two years for about $1250 and applied for my pistol and semi-automatic rifle permits in New York before I left. The fact that I was claiming to be a "part-time resident" definitely sussed them out, but they allowed the application because I told them if I ever move back full-time I don't want to be waiting around to take possession of my firearms in NY again. Ideally, if I were to move back at all I'd go to Arizona or someplace to own NFA guns instead, but the permit was useful regardless since I visit family there at least once annually now.
Life in Japan has been great, I got to know all of the top government, NPO, business owners and foreign lawyers in Tokyo; my home in based in Tokyo so I get to benefit from JR and Tokyo Metro's extensive railway system, work even pays for my commuter pass (I live intentionally far away from the office which extends its use case and pays for my bus commute to the station which in turn gives me access to the whole bus line) and I live not too far away from Tokyo DisneyLand being on the eastern side of Tokyo.
Everything here is still fairly cheap, I do need to buy a bike and I'm still working on converting my NYS driver's license over to a Japanese license, but I've been able to use my IDP once while I was moving my belongings over to my new apartment across Tokyo. My social life has also been fairly healthy compared to most new expats, dating is a little rough but other than that there is no lack of friends.\
So why did I leave? I had credible-enough threats of violence waged against me back home, and I didn't even recognize the place in which I've grown up in these past twenty plus years. Additionally, I like Asian culture and living in a country where I'm the minority has definitely made me the protagonist in my own little life's story, that isn't me being facetious either, so much good has happened from this move. I still do occasionally help with US-related things. I work with American commerce abroad, I visit the US military bases on special occasions in which my SOFA status friends invite me over and I volunteer for some US charities here in Japan.
Some tricky things that have arisen are the following:
-I run a business in Japan and hold multiple bank accounts worldwide including HK which has caused for a cluster fuck of a tax situation with the IRS. Unless, of course, I want to get my U.S. Passport revoked and be de facto stateless abroad (technically an Italian citizen by descent too but that process is taking forever) I have to put up with this shit.
-Renewals of my NY pistol permit aren't friendly to majority-year non-resident citizens. I lived downstate which results in me not having to just recertify with the state every 5 years for a "lifetime" license, but do a full renewal every 3 years with the local PD. This is pretty simple with a VPN and a credit card by just paying online, but I cannot upgrade to full concealed carry yet until the state rids of the training requirement or clarifies that it is only required to be done once, something neither the state nor the courts have yet done. I'm in no hurry because with the sensitive locations clause, every CCW is effectively just a glorified premises permit.
-Renewal of DL not an issue when renewing online with a credit card again, but every 15 or 20 years I need to submit a new photograph to the DMV and every 8 years since its a REAL ID I need to get my vision checked in NY.
-I apply for a lot of credit cards (over 20 at this point) to churn their SUBs which help fund me flying ANA and JAL in first and business class between JFK and HND. Sometimes, these issuers (aside from Amex) after uncooperative with me having a overseas address which means I need to phone up my parents to receive the card for me and for me to figure out how I am to use it contactlessly so I can meet minimum spend and get my next free flight home.
-I always have to say "I intend to return" on UOCAVA application forms, otherwise I can only vote in federal elections. I still voted in my local school board/budget elections when I last visited so I could write in all of the candidates and vote no on all of the budget proposals. Why would I want to give that up when I can legally say I "returned" so therefore had an intention to at some point in the course of human history? :>
-The biggest issue: my family is getting older and it's not too unlikely that my grandparents could die and I would not necessarily be able to take the time off to visit their funerals. Hopefully, this doesn't happen for quite some time.
