I thought I’d add a trip report for Universal Studios Japan as I found some of this detail was hard to find online (e.g. the opening time!) My husband and kids (aged 8 and 11) visited USJ on a weekday in mid April.
Tickets: All purchased through Klook without any problems. Printed at home to save the hassle of flicking through four passes on my phone every time. We bought the 7 Express Pass which was worth every cent. We also bought the Early Entry studio pass, designed to let us in 15 minutes early. That wasn’t entirely accurate, see paragraph below!
Entry times: We had read online that the park opens an hour before the posted time. Not today! The posted time was 9am, and we turned up at 8:15. The park opened at around 8:40. At this time, the regular lines and the Early Entry lines opened all at once. But it was still definitely worth buying the Early Entry pass, because the lines were much, MUCH shorter. If you’re using an Early Entry pass, just show the attendants when you turn up and they’ll direct you to the Early Entry lines.
Super Nintendo World: We had already reserved an entry time for Super Nintendo World at 10:50 through our express passes, but we didn’t want to wait. We checked the app as we walked in at 8:50, and we could get an entry time to SNW at 9:10. We went straight there, lined up, and they let us in 15 minutes early! We found the same for all of our express passes too: They would allow us in at least 10 minutes earlier. Perhaps it’s because it wasn’t a particularly crowded day (still crowded, but not a weekend or holiday). In brief, SNW is everything you’ve seen online, but so spectacular in person.
SNW power up bands: We bought these at the first kiosk, but should’ve followed the advice online and walked further into the area. There were power up band kiosks with no queues inside. We didn’t really get much value for money out of these: the kids had fun hitting the blocks and coins and interacting with them a little on the rides, but they couldn’t be bothered to wait in the long queues for the more elaborate games. There’s a big challenge which requires playing several games to collect keys to enter a boss level. It probably would have taken an extra hour or two, but we were ready to go on more rides.
Jaws: We went on this next, but there was no need for a fast pass as the queue was very short. It was entertaining enough despite being in Japanese. We would have preferred to ride the Hollywood roller coaster; our 7 express pass had that as an alternative to Jaws, but unfortunately it’s currently closed.
Minions Mayhem: This was the best 3D movie ride I had ever been on (until we went on Soaring at DisneySea!). Both are excellent. The intro videos have English subtitles; the main 3D movie ride didn’t, but there wasn’t much dialogue. Very fun, enjoyed by all. Walked past the other Minions ride, Freeze Ray Sliders, but looked like a version of spinning teacups, not worth the ever-lengthening queue times.
Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge: Probably our favourite ride for the day. It’s a combination ride / 3D movie / interactive experience with virtual goggles – worth every bit for the express pass, and worth the queue if you don’t have an express pass!
Yoshi’s Adventure: Very much a young kids’ ride and can be skipped! Even our kids looked bored. There are good views, but not much that you can’t see elsewhere. (As an aside, the two best views of the not-yet-opened Donkey Kong Country were found at the peak of the Flight of the Hippogriff rollercoaster, and on the Tempozan Ferris Wheel which we visited the day before.)
Flying Dinosaur: Our 11-year-old doesn’t like extreme roller coasters, but our 8-year-old was unsure as she has liked some bigger roller coasters before. We decided that my husband and I would ride it while the kids watched (and took videos, hilarious) and we could tell her afterwards if it was too scary. DEFINITELY too scary, haha. I love roller coasters, and I closed my eyes in parts. I’m so glad I did it, but it’s not for the faint-of-heart.
Jurassic Park meet and greet: We happened to walk past as the dinosaurs were coming out. Cute for the kids, but not worth structuring your day around. I wish the Jurassic Park log flume ride was open, but it’s currently still closed.
Waterworld: We queued for this 20 minutes before show time, but we needn’t have bothered, as the seating area was huge. They were still letting people in as the performance began, and none were having trouble finding seats. We could have chosen the front row, but we sat slightly behind the ‘splash zone’ so we wouldn’t get wet. Sitting higher up afforded a better view too, but views would have been good from anywhere. The plot was simple enough to follow without understanding Japanese – fun and good for a long rest for our already tired feet!
Hogsmeade: Utterly stunning, all of it: The shops, the food, the performances (singing frogs and magical beasts turned up regularly). We ate at the Three Broomsticks, which appeared crowded with a long queue, but with an app to order, it cleared quickly enough. There were plenty of empty tables out the back, with a view across the lake to Hogwarts! My kids had wanted to try butterbeer for so long, but it was sickly sweet, like bubbly maple syrup. It was quite difficult to find a place to dispose of the rest of the drink so we could take the souvenir cups home, but eventually we just dumped the contents in the bathroom sink.
Interactive wands: These were much better value for our kids, and they took part in five of the seven interactive spells before exhaustion hit at the end of the day. The first (wingardium leviosa!) was not being managed by staff, so it was hard to get it to work. It had about a 50% success rate. The later ones were all managed by very kind and patient staff (who also happened to speak excellent English) who allowed each guest to keep trying until it worked. It meant the queues were slow-moving, but most were short enough, and my kids were happy to wait while they watched others attempting the spells.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey: We were so excited for this one, but it scared both my kids a bit! The 8-year-old because of the giant dementors (both on-screen and big animatronics), and the 11-year-old because the chair actually tipped a really long way back and forward. She was worried we would go right upside-down, but we didn’t. It was a lot more intense than we had expected. I really loved it, but be careful if you have sensitive kids.
Flight of the Hippogriff: This is a pretty tame roller coaster, and I’m not sure why people would queue two hours for it. The kids loved it, though. One warning: my six foot tall husband had to be moved to the front row as his legs didn’t fit!
Minions Mayhem again: We noticed on the app that there was only a 10 minute queue for Minions Mayhem, so my husband and 8-year-old had another go. A 10 minute queue means no queue at all, as it takes 10 minutes to walk through and watch the intro videos. We checked the app, and all the more popular rides still had huge queues, so decided to call it a day.
All up, we were there from opening to 6pm, and were utterly exhausted by the end of it. Plan a quieter day for afterwards, if you can! And we were very jealous of the people staying in the hotel right by the park – in hindsight it would have been worth the extra packing and unpacking to shift to that hotel for the night before and/or after.

PUG: Jompiy are quite a lot like Damien Hirst’s spin paintings.
EJ: I liked his figurative paintings that Tate didn’t include any of, in that solo show that had virtually everything else he’d ever done. I think Tate will be showing Heckel’s Horse before long.
PUG: What makes you think that?
EJ: It would be poetic. Darth Vadar comes to his senses and everyone’s rescue. There’ll probably be some new maverick Director that comes along and wants to make an easy name for herself.
PUG: How about a Heckel’s Horse Jr. show there instead? I liked the Heckel’s Horse Jr. book.

PUG: Is there anything planned for Heckel’s Horse?
EJ: As far as I can tell, it’s on the back burner till whoever’s in charge decides the time’s right for a show. Billy’s been trying to push things along for years, pretty much since we started doing them.
PUG: You need this new Tate Director.
EJ: We need someone to forcibly step in with the interest, clout and balls to act irrespective of any commercial consequence or fretting what the art world and its clientele think. Like some benevolent Stuckist ex-hedge fund manager who says “Let’s do a show because of all that stuff in the Stuckism manifesto.”
PUG: Like a hostile takeover. Might Heckel’s Horse Jr. being published speed things along for Heckel’s Horse?
EJ: Apparantly the opposite. It might put them off, but whatever. It shouldn’t be all beholden to any audience thing. There needs to be a punk movement in Contemporary Art. Like Black Ivory but slightly more influential. None of this prissy “We’re not allowed to do this, we’re not allowed to do that. The clients might not like this, the clients might not like that.” I don’t know anything about how the art world functions but there’s an obvious staleness and near-universal obedience to it. Then you get things like Stuckism or our semi-Stuckist-splinter-group Black Ivory that, like opt out of the audience as target idea. That are happy to be a disgrace. I think they asked the bass player from the Manics what it was like walking around dressed up in their band gear, round their local working-class mining village in skirts and makeup, and he says “We just wanted to be hated.” I like that about Stuckism and the seemingly repellent and toe-curling bridge-burning stuff we do. The term “target audience” is business talk for a reason. Target audiences are for things like Persil Automatic, not artists. Artists worrying about this stuff is just depressing and I guess is all counter-productive to what they’re after anyway.
PUG: How would it be counter-productive?
EJ: Because it’s like some saggy-headed donkey that’s given up. Part of the shuffling crowd, which is shame if your art isn’t. Not believing in yourself. That’s how it all looks to me anyway. When I see photos of Stuckists prancing around in clown costumes outside Tate it’s so appealing. They’re building walls between themselves and the people everyone else is so desperate to be approved by.
PUG: So can Black Ivory save Contemporary Art?
EJ: We’ll stack a load of six footer Heckel’s Horse Jr. paintings against the walls. A few in the front room with the sofas, tables and chairs and whatnot. I’ll be walking round with a full teapot. Invite some friends round and do it as Stuckism would do it. Leave the evidence on our YouTube channel as Van Goghian proof for future generations that today’s Contemporary Art wasn’t just the text book stuff.
PUG: Stuckism was quite punk influenced but the art world’s still largely what it was beforehand.
EJ: Stuckism bothered. Like leading a horse to water. It’s like even the anti-establishment are only considered successful when the establishment accept them. The Other Muswell Hill Stuckists should do a manifesto about it. Stuckism‘s not for our benefit, it’s for yours. Our “failures” are your problem. We’re waking up and painting either way. We don’t need the art world. We don’t need the Turner Prize to show us what a decent painting looks like. I’m only talking about it not shaking up the artworld obviously, not the work or anything important, but like we’ve both done loads of Stuckist Turner Prize demos, published a Stuckist Turner Prize manifesto, as far as I know, the Turner Prize is still going strong. So what? Did the demos fail? Are our paintings worse now? If nothing else, it’s nice to get out the house. I like the Turner Prize demos because it’s like getting bashed on both sides. By the establishment and the hipsters. Usually it’s like, choose a team: brand A or brand B and kid yourself there’s a difference. The establishment think they’re winning and the hipsters think they’re cool and anti-establishment. Stuckism chooses neither, which I see as the only real anti-establishment. Stuckism‘s failures, if anything, proove its success becuase punk succeeded in it’s non-musical objectives, it became chart music. No chance of Stuckism falling for that one. How’s that for a theory? Failure isn’t failure. Failure’s success because failure’s longevity and success is failure. Stuckism‘s a roaring failure.
PUG: A new punk Tate for Heckel’s Horse.
EJ: I did some assistant work for Jimmy Cauty years ago, on these glittery riot shields. I think around 2016. The tracksuit bottoms still have the gold glitter and PVA stuck to them. I can’t remember if I was talking about Heckel’s Horse or something else, but Billy and I couldn’t have done too many by then. It might have been something else, but I tell Jimmy we’ve done all this work and nothing’s getting published, and he says ‘So, when’s the bonfire?’ The man who burned a million pounds. Ten years later, he we are, same situation. Thankfully, as far as I’m aware, still no bonfire. So overall, things are going great for Heckel’s Horse. All the paintings are still probably in existence.
PUG: Just a lot more of them now.
EJ: I’ve got this image of Heckel’s Horse paintings being taken at night to some secret billionaires island off the South Kent coast and chucked on a blazing fire with a load of men in white suits standing round drinking champagne, each with a cigar between their teeth going ‘Ha! Ha! Fuck you Edgeworth!’
PUG: Then there’d just be the Heckel’s Horse Jr.’s left and you could sell them for millions.
EJ: You’re a genius.
PUG: All those paintings will end up in a show at some point.
EJ: It’s been eleven years. Could be another twenty, thirty. I had this paranoia, they’d pretend they were by Billy and cut my name out. If Billy and I aren’t around. Even if I’m still around, who’s going to listen to me?
PUG: Do you reckon?
EJ: I don’t even know who it was, but some lying fart-face decided it would be alright to pretend these monoprints Billy and I collaborated on would be better sold off as ‘by Billy Childish’ and not by both of us. So that’s what happened. Like a click of the fingers, “Bye bye Edgeworth.” Pretty unimpressive, I thought.
PUG: Didn’t you say anything?
EJ: No, what’s going to happen? Better to say nothing then moan about it ten years later. The way I see it, I’m not the one lying so it’s not my problem. Do you know what I mean? It shouldn’t be on me to object if they’re doing it on purpose.
PUG: So it’s not like Damien Hirst and his assistant’s painting butterflies.
EJ: No. It’s sort of, not wanting to flatter the people that erased my attribution with the idea they’re worth bothering with. Because it’s not like I was upset or felt hard done by. It was just disillusionment in one thing, addressed by the creation of another, Black Ivory Printmaking & Audio Club. If anything it’s a net positve. “So that’s the kind of people you really are. What a fantastic opportunity!”
Damien Hirst’s different. It’s all declared and everyone knows the deal. There’s nothing dodgy about it. It’s not like some slippery gallerist-type shifts the goalposts after the works done, like they’ve got some licence to change the truth. The buyers know what they’re buying, the artists know what they’re doing. These monoprints were a thick painterly transfer technique I came up with and haven’t seen anywhere else. Until I see any that look similar, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a type of monoprint of my invention. And they think they can just sign that away from me. If people see mine now, the ones I did independently using the same technique, they’ll probably think I copied it from Billy, which I think’s quite a liberty. “Taking Berty’s.” as we said at school.
PUG: Didn’t they ask you about it first?
EJ: No, I just get emailed after with some apparent excuse. If you’re some no-name pushover like me, I guess they think it’s alright. It might all have been a lot more innocent than it looked from my end, but if they’re like this with some few hundred quid monoprints, what’s it going to be like with all these crates of 6ft paintings that are worth a fortune? Not exactly reassuring to think of Heckel’s Horse in these people’s hands.
PUG: Welcome to the art world.
EJ: It might end up for the best. A lot of why I started doing Heckel’s Horse Jr. was to get the Heckel’s Horse story out the door. A lots been done already. Billy and I want to get Heckel’s Horse paintings in front of people. Billy‘s spoken about it in interviews that I’ve super-glue-referenced into the Billy Childish wikipedia page. L-13 have done a load of prints. Things are going pretty well. The less behind-the-scenes Heckel’s Horse is, the harder I guess it is for the truth to get fudged later. Especially if Billy and I aren’t around by the time anything happens.
PUG: You’ve always got Jompiy.
EJ: Yeah, my solid backup plan. I don’t need to worry about Jompiy getting nicked.

So this started 3 years ago. I (now 24,f) worked and studied in a BBW (Berufsbildungswerk). It was the school begin in summer and my class got new students.
INFO: In BBW´s you begin either in February or in mid of august. I live, study and work in one same place as 1000 students. The BBW had two onside dorms.
Amongst the new student was a special student, lets call him David (now 22,m). He was your typical macho guy, who had always strong opinions about certain topics and in the very first 3 weeks we got along well....
Well, so I´d thought. There were a lot of red flags that I didn´t notice at the time about him, that made indeed obvious how he came over to me and all the other was just a facade. He often would ask of me to bring, give and take "his" school supplies, worksheets etc. with me because his reasoning was "I don´t have a bag. I can´t carry my books and worksheets".
In other words he wanted me to be his luggage donkey....
I often would ask of him to get his stuff but he always dodged it with replies like he is getting it next week...
He told me on multiple occasions that I was someone good to talk to with...(he mostly talked while I just listened. He didn´t even let me make any comments)
Now the banger in this story was one certain tuesday that I had. It was in the morning, around a 5 minute classroom change where he asked me "Lunara, can we chill this afternoon after school? And drink some beer?".....
I didn´t reply to his question at all, because I was stressed with stuffing my schoolbag and heading to my next class. (Which is probably my fault that he took my silence and me rushing to the next class as a yes. But I digress)
Now you would think by chilling with someone you don´t know at all or barely, you would want to hangout at a place where many people are. Outside... Just not in your room necessarily, or your apartment....
Now I had earlier off from school and decided to do my laundry which was ... underwear heavy and black.... and while I was changing into something comfy the unthinkable happened...
While being half nude, David aggressively bangs on my door and opens the door without getting from me a reply back that he could come inside. Me, half nude stumbles and rushes to the door trying to shut it but David had his foot between the door and doorframe. He went aggressive on me and made a huge scene in my dormgroups hallway.
I remembered David asking the question and handed him a beer outside and asked him if he could wait a bit outside but I couldn´t finish even asking David, because he pushed the door open and I fell butt flat on the floor. I took my clothes that I wanted to change into and rushed into my bathroom.
Coming out, David sat on the ground with the beer I gave him and blasted his music box. 10 minutes passed by and he started to look around in my room. (Mind you, I do take medications. And at the time I stored my treatments in my room, in a lockable rollcontainer.)
David, overcome with curiosity started to go through my stuff on my desk. He noticed that the lockable part of my rollcontainer was locked and demanded that I need to open the rollcontainer. I said no. David got more angry and demanded it again to which I again said No.
Pissed off, David moved onto my laundry basket and went through it. He made comments like "Oh nice black lace you´ve got. What Cup-Size do you wear? I bet it looks sexy on you." It made my skin crawl and I couldn´t utter a word because I was shocked that he went through my laundry basket.
He continued on going through my bathroom, complaining that he doesn´t see many make up products? that it doesn´t look like that the bathroom is that of a woman. David continued his little journey through my pantry which had buldak noodles in it.(This is important later) He asked me if I could make a portion for him. I told him those were really spicy noodles. David told me that he is fine, since they "supposedly" aren´t that spicy and that he can´t handle that much spice. I told him that I don´t mind making him a portion but that I would start cooking soon "since I wanted to go to bed early". (I tried making a reasonable excuse as I felt immensely uncomfortable and wanted him gone as fast as I could without him getting aggressive)
He moved on from my pantry to my wardrobe, where he would make more comments on my underwear and asking me if I was taken if I ever had something....popable... with someone. If I even knew what a pp would look like... Ignoring all his questions I asked David why he would go through my stuff...
His reply you ask?
"Thats what friends do to get to know each other."
I stood there speechless. Unable to reply anything at all, I took the buldak noodles and went into the community kitchen. My caretakers asked if I was fine and assured them that I was. (Which obviously was a lie. But I also didn´t wanted them to worry or deal with David´s aggressive behavior)
INFO: When David came, the caretakers weren´t there and had a shift change.
I asked David if he wanted Cheese or stir-fried eggs in his buldak noodles to reduce the spiciness. But he declined. When I finished making his noodles he ate 3 bites before rushing to the kitchens fridge and downed a whole milk carton down. It wasn´t enough so he ran to the groups pantry room, to the fridge in that room to get butter milk.
David excused himself saying that he wasn´t feeling well. He ran out of the group like a dog running when its mealtime. My caretakers noticed it and asked me again if something happened between me and David. I shaked my head and went with mine and his portion back into my room.
Next day came...
I had P.E.classes with him and while we played badminton together with other people from different classes, David would complain to them about me. The spice level was to much for his body and he apparently sat four hours on the toilette and had to ask his roommate to bring him many bottles of buttermilk. Apparently 7 x 750ml bottles.
David would go on how he would wanna do it with me and how he liked my underwear. At the end of the P.E. lesson, people asked me if I was okay...
I was not....
I was livid, mad and filled with anger and disgust. I went that same day to my supervisor Mr.Magus and told him everything that happened... I originally wanted to let that day slide. Let what happened go...
But David crossed the line....
Actions were taken. David wasn´t allowed to come near to me, talk to me or work together with me. He wasn´t allowed to step foot into my dormgroup and everyone from our department got to know everything that happened between us...
But it didn´t ended there...
5 weeks later on a Friday, I got called in by my caretakers. In their office I see two yellow trashbags and the caretakers from the group that David was staying in.
They apologized to me and told me that today the caretakers did a room inspection on David´s room as the caretakers received complains from other groupmates staying in that group, that there was a nasty smell coming out of David´s room and found out the source of the smell.
The source was my and other women underwear that he had stolen out of our rooms. Those two bags had my underwear in it and I can´t tell you how vile it was. My underwear was covered in a white yellowish sticky gooey substance that smelled abysmal...
I tried washing them but ultimately had to throw them away.
How he got into my room you ask?
He stole from the cleaning personal a general key that opens literally any room in the dorm. He would often come when I was either sleeping or showering.
I was mad and livid. So I went petty again. I went and made a sign that said "Warning!!! I love spicy food! Hide your milk cartons away or they will be gone." printed and laminated the sign and stitched into his chair.
Next day came and all I hear are cuss words and David´s Supervisor giving David a kickout warning if he wouldn´t quiet down. David never got to know that it was me who ghost stitched on the sign on his chair. and he wasn´t able to remove it at all.
In those 3 years, I had multiple issues continuing on with David. variating from SH to sometimes AS the final straw happened 1 month ago.
I was resting in our breakroom as my migrain got worse and saw that in the breakroom, David had his stuff laying around. I knew David would at some point get his belongings and leave the room.
If he had done that he wouldn´t be banned from the BBW and wouldn´t have been demoted to homeoffice. While I laid on the couch on my side, he came inside, around the table and proceeds to slap my butt. Unable to utter a word due to the lack of mental capacity, I put my leg down and David did trip over it. He went mad and said "you b-word!!!" and punches my head. He punched so hard that my migrain got worse and a few seconds later, I got nosebleed as well.
I was in shock and feared that if I said anything rn it would make him again aggressive. So I went 2 days later to my psychologist and told her what happened.
When the class wanted to know where David was I told them what happened and the whole class went into joy. Like someone gave them a hefty raise or a good grade.
It lasted only 2 weeks due to government regulations but I will never forget the cheer Joy the class had.

I deep apologize if this comes over too visualizing. English is my second language and while people do tell me that I speak it well, I´m not so good on wording things. Not even in my own motherlanguage. But I assure you I am working on it.
INFO: Yes I had to go through those bags on my own and Yes the caretakers do know what my laundry/ underwear looks like as I´m physically not always able to reach the washing machine and tumble dryer and am relying on and off on a wheel chair. (both appliances are on shelves, unless I stand up and risk breaking or dispositioning my ripcage, that's how I have to get laundry done)
The caretakers do have to memorize laundry from people bound in wheel chairs or people who have a genetic issues that makes them unable to reach the appliances due to height issue.
They do check up on us asking standard questions if we got new clothes or items with us. New electronic items or even amenities we do have to list to them.

Obviously online poker not included because shit players just get destroyed and variance isn’t an issue when I can play 4 tables at more than double the number of hands per hour per table.
I’m talking about live poker where you can get bad beat by the same shit reg for a year straight. I made a post a few months back questioning whether someone could run bad in live poker forever after experiencing my most brutal down swing to date. It received a lot of interesting comments offering insight into my situation so I decided I would take a break and pick up the live poker ready to crush after a mental reset.
Then I get a repeat of my experience with live poker variance so far. Start off slow, nice 10 buy in upswing without any super lucky hands, I win $900 worth of high hands (not even close to being rewarded my fair share of high hands considering in the grand scheme of everything though) and then BOOM - doom switch gets activated. AQs vs KQo I 3-bet the fuck out of this lagtard donkey to 5x his 7.5bb open raise while i’m in position. He calls the flop has a Q on it I raise his mouthbreathing flop donk, put him all in on the turn and he spikes a miracle K on the river for an $800 pot. Proceed to lose three pre flop flips in a row, all over $400 pots. Lose two flop flips in a row against the same player. Same set up basically I 3-bet AKo/AQo against their AJo/KJo. They donk the flop with top pair on a monotone board, and I put them all in while holding the nut club/heart.
Lose a $700 pot with TT all in on the flop vs AQo on KdJsTs. Card dead for the next 20 hours, tiny losses. Then the cherry on top last night. JJ $405 effective second to act over one limp, I make it $12, player to my left calls, luckbox shit reg on the cut off calls, limper calls. Flop is QJ2 rainbow, I lead for $20, player to my left calls, luckbox shit reg instantly jams all in for my stack. I snap call, idiot to my left tanks forever before folding Q9s face up (lol). Board runs out 6 8 completing the rainbow, I quietly table my set, and this guy slow rolls me with T9o for no reason.
This is the same shit reg who has cracked my sets and monster hands multiple times. Even though Ive watched them run like moses for the past year they still joke about how much money they’ve lost.
Ive played more than 400 hours at this point, and I’ve still never been rewarded with that massive upswing or $1800 stack at the 1-2 table. I don’t even enjoy live that much, I think the only thing keeping me coming back is the chase of that dragon that has unfairly eluded me for so long. Live poker is such a pathetic measure of skill, naive friends who run good as fuck will flex their massive wins on me. With my quality of play If I ran like that the results would make people think I am gods gift to poker.
Players and somehow dealers have assumed I am some kind of pro before even though I have done nothing to indicate that. Random people will play a few orbits with me and assume I am some kind of crusher waiting for 2-5 even though I am barely breakeven live.
I adhere to strict stop losses and tilt control. Before a bunch of you write comments like “your probably not as good as you think you are and have leaks you aren’t telling us about 🤓” , no I haven’t tilted or spewed whatsoever. I am crushing 50nl at this point, and the live 1-2 play has been so straightforward my bets just print ev. If I ran as good as I have bad these past few hundreds hours I would be a mini end-boss playing 2-5. Rant over, this game sucks.

Couldn’t find anything to this effect in the search and it’s a bit more complicated than it sounds so posting here instead of short questions thread! Sorry this got long, it feels complicated to me but theres a tldr at the end!!
I started running LMoP for 4 inexperienced players and 1 experienced player about a year ago. It’s my first time DMing and there have been hurdles and a lot of learning experience and things have progressed pretty slowly due to both me learning the DM ropes, the inexperience of my players but also their absolutely delightful RP-heavy and VERY silly playstyle. Anyway here we are a year and 6 sessions (we are busy people) later and they’ve only JUST entered Phandalin on our last sesh.
I’ve really personalised the story for them because they pretty much all have important personal quests they want to achieve, or really cool backstories that I want to bring into the game at some point. I’ve also tried to make things the right tone to match how they want to play – I made Phandalin Stardew Valley themed, gave them a shrek and donkey (ie. ogre and mule) encounter prior to arriving, and have a lot of other fun stuff planned in the future. It’s all been really well received, seems to be keeping them more engaged when I was trying to play things by the book, and honestly it has been so FUN planning this stuff.
But I have ended up spending a decent amount of time rewriting parts of the campaign, and inserting characters and encounters. I’m not complaining, because like I said its been super fun. And is definitely teaching me a lot about the creation aspect of DMing and giving me loads of ideas and confidence. But some of the time I’ve been spending prepping and planning is really focused on...teaching the inexperienced players the rules. Even after 6 sessions they get confused about combat and don’t really seem to have done any reading of the players handbook (which they have available as a PDF and there are always 2 of them physically at each session) or even just the starter set rulebook (likewise available as PDF of at the session). So I’ve been trying to come up with ways to get them to retain the rules of combat better. I’ve been preparing a super simple rules book for when they get confused, and also have been formatting some print outs (they already have them available on the table during sessions but I’m wondering if the info is just too dense for them especially when theyre already confused/overwhelmed)
With all this customisation of the campaign, refreshing my own understanding of the rules and making sure I haven’t forgotten any basic concepts (ADHD-brain, it happens), and trying to create ways for them to learn and retain info and STAY ENGAGED during sessions (the silliness sometimes gets the better of them and I have to use primary-school teacher tricks to get them to focus), I ended up spending about 30 hrs between sessions preparing for our last one.
It’s not normally quite so much time. In this case it wasn’t all just for the session, some of it was for the campaign as a whole, or possible pathways for after the campaign. Some of it was working on these printouts and rulebooks. Some was spent fighting with my printer or hassling my players to send me a character portrait so I could print pics to make character tokens with. Here’s the other thing – I am pretty poor but only have a part time job so I have extra time but not much money to dedicate to making this fun!
I recently realised I have to start hosting the games myself. We’ve been rotating through the player’s hosting up until now but I just cant keep doing this at other peoples houses and having to get picked up and lug my stuff around and travel sometimes up to 2hrs depending who’s hosting. I told the group this, and one player has pointed out that I came across as dismissive of other people’s efforts, and sounded selfish. I hate that I’ve made my players feel this way. They also said that they understood DMing involved more prep but it shouldn’t be a chore, and questioned if I even still wanted to DM. The one experienced player thinks this is ridiculous and that I should host without question – my house is central to most of them, and he has DMing experience himself so he knows how much easier it is doing it at your own place. But...I’m starting to doubt myself. I spend so much time planning and preparing so I can run this game for them that it feels like me wanting to host it at my own home shouldn’t be an issue...but if it’s coming across to my players that I see it as a chore and don’t value their efforts then maybe I’m dedicating too much time to planning? I definitely don’t want to stop DMing, I love it! I guess I feel that they don’t understand how much time and effort I put into this. But then I’m also now worried that I’m being extreme and obsessive and putting in an abnormal amount.
Tldr; I spend anywhere from 15-30 hrs between sessions preparing for a session, and the future campaign. Part of this is how my brain works (ADHD perfectionist) and part is because I am going to extra effort for my players so they can grasp the rules properly.
My question is basically: How long do you spend preparing? What kind of efforts do you go to for your players?
Bonus question: Is it pretty typical to want to host an IRL game yourself as DM? (In my experience as a player the DM hosted all but 1 oneshot)

Hi all, I thought I’d share my thoughts after running the quickstart adventure.
We played in person with 4 players, all who are experienced with ttrpgs. We used physical character sheets and cards (I printed and sleeved the cards). We also used physical miniatures and terrain.
Including character creation, our session ran approx 4 hours. We were able to complete the adventure in this time.
The group decided to build characters instead of using the pregens. It took us just over an hour to build characters, including creating connections. The process was smooth and enjoyable for everyone. The whole table were impressed by the character sheet design and clarity of the card system. In that short time, there was some instant story threads I could have explored as a GM.
The experiences was a notable section of character creation as it enabled my players to really lean on a roleplaying trope through their experiences. We had a seraph whose deity was ‘the universe’ and had vibe check and manifest your destiny as experiences. This is just one example but overall the experiences and questions fleshed out characters better than other systems we played.
Combat felt really engaging as a gm. I found myself taking a fear and not taking the initiative to bank up and unleash on players. Being able take the accelerator on and off felt like a good balance of player agency and gm knife twisting.
We used the 3 token initiative system but it rarely came into play. My table on this day was made up of very chill players though so take that with a grain of salt.
PCs felt very thematic in battle. Our fawn rogue jumped around the battlefield stabbing and donkey kicking foes. Our faerie seraph providing some clutch rerolls for the rogue and throwing hammers from the sky. The guardian really shone through as a reactionary class, diving in front of enemy attacks then retaliating for big damage .
The class fantasy was front and centre through play. We played with only one of each domain card which I think I would probably house rule because it ensured more unique gameplay among characters, despite sharing some domains.
The quickstart adventure did a good job of showing the GM how to run this style of play through the prompting questions for the players. My players had some great ideas in the tavern which really helped build the world. I even used this style of play to get each player to describe the trinket left in their boots.
One player described finding a keyring with ‘joes mega blacksmith team building worker annual retreat 74d’. This is a good example of the gonzo approach my players bring but this actually gives me a cool place into the world I could build out.
Overall the sharing of the narrative helped take the heat off me as the gm at times, whilst making the players more invested in the world we were building.
Most of my players found it hard to spend their hope. I didn’t let players use experiences in combat which might have been wrong? I’ll have to double check.
We also didn’t use group attacks which could have been another hope sink.
Stress felt really good and impactful. Short rest mechanics felt good and flavourful.
The group had a lot of fun and I think we will play again at some point soon. I’m interested to see how easy to is to build my own encounters.
The only concern I could see is with new players to ttrpgs.
If you’re asking players to learn how to play a ttrpg but then also layer on those prompting questions about the world I could see it putting off new players. This is all pure conjecture so I’d be interested to hear how this quick start plays out with fresh faced roleplayers.

Edit - I just wanted to add that having low hp numbers made managing multiple adversaries much easier than fantasy d20 systems.

So this post is gonna be part of a series of posts, where the main post will basically tell us about the unsolved mystery criticism in more detail & the themes and creator's intent, that will link to these posts where every season 6 is discussed.
So 6 posts for 6 seasons of this brilliant show. I'll also review the show in future at some point. The main post I'll post here & also television. And later link that post to all the 6 seasons posts.
If you think I missed any mystery then comment. If you are unsatisfied with my answers then also you are welcomed but I'll say watch the respective relevant scenes first. At least at the end we will know the exact number of unsolved mysteries.

I just wanna prove that while Lost has unsolved mysteries no doubt, it's not to the crazy extent people think, this reputation of the unsolved mysteries has blown way out of proportion.

Desmond failed to put the numbers on time which led to a big electromagnetic leak causing the plain to break in half. Season 2 I'll explain it in more detail because that season is all about the hatch.
🟢S1E1- What was the strange voice from the forest and who was knocking down the trees ? & Who killed the pilot ?
-The Smoke Monster , The sound it has is of Electromagnetic powers of The Source.
🟢S1E1- Why is John Locke so happy despite there being a plane crash ?

• Because for John regained the ability to walk again after being on a wheel chair for years.

🟡S1E1- Why did the rain randomly start out of nowhere ?

• The Island moved at that time to a location where it was already raining.

According to the scale of Danielle Rousseau's maps, the Island is 60 km (40 mi) north to south, and about 45 km (30 mi) east to west. The diameter of the Island has been shown to be a several-days' walk, as demonstrated by the Tailies traveling to join the midsection survivors, by Kate and Sawyer's return from the Hydra Island, and by Kate, Locke, Sayid and Rousseau's journey to The Flame and then to the Barracks.
The writers also made a point, several times throughout the show to indicate that Locke had a special connection to the island, and at several instances showed him predicting the sudden weather change, when nobody else expected it to change in a matter of seconds. And the show establishes clearly that the island can move on its own accord when it seems it necessary (without the need for an unnatural movement via donkey wheel), couple with the emphasis on the show of sudden rain fall and weather change, coupled with emphasis on Locke predicting said weather change and sudden rain falls... the hypothesis that sometimes when we see sudden rain fall (especially when Locke is predicting it) is based on strong plausible evidence and not simple correlations.
I am not saying that every time it rains on the island, it means the island moved... but at some instances where the show makes a point to indicate that this is very weird, it is not a stretch to think that it's because the island moved.
Charlie's dialogue when the rain starts "You guys, Is this normal? This kind of day turning into night. The end of the world type weather, Guys ?" It was the most apparent change of them notice, I believe it eventually syncs up
🟢S1E2- Who has the prisoner with Marshell ? - Kate
🟢S1E2- What favour did Kate ask from the Marshall ?

• She said that Ray Mullen should get his 23k dollars.

🟢S1E2- Where is the French message being sent from ?

• Radio Tower.

🟢Who recorded it ?

• Daniel Rousseau

& We find out about others from her so
🟢Why did the Others allow the existence and continued broadcast of the message in the years since Rousseau recorded it ?

• Because the Looking Glass Station prevented the outside world from hearing so negating the need for deactivating the broadcast.

🟡S1E2- What secret did John tell to Walt ? -
How he started walking on the island.
Because he started walking on the island he thought he had a purpose on the Island. There would be no way it just randomly happened that he got feelings in his legs back, That Island gave him this gift for a reason.
So that raises another question
🟡How did he start walking on the island ?

• Because of the Electromagnetic healing properties of the island & he's just special, there's these pockets of electromagnetic places on Earth, one is in a lamp station in L.A over a church which Eloise owns, one over in Australia over Issac Of Uluru's camp.

though it doesn't heal everyone like how it didn't heal Ben, and, Island or the light has a will of his own. John Locke was special ever since childhood he was destined to go there, he made drawings about the smoke monster in his childhood even.
The Electromagnetism can also kill too tough, Getting too much close to it is fatal. But on the island it increases sperm counts in male and heals people of their medical problems.
🔵🟢S1E2- Why was there a polar bear on the Island ?

• It's explained in the epilogue but short answer: Dharma brought them, but we see Dharma's animals in the show so it's not that hard to figure it out even without watching the Epilogue.

Forget that, even In Season 5 Dr. Chang specifically mentions about there being Polar Bears on the Hydra Island, still people who never watched the show carefully thinks that show runners just didn't know. Where do you think Sawyer & Kate were trapped? Polar Bear Cages!
🟢S1E4- Who did Jack see and why ?

• It was his father and he saw him because of Man in Black, he has powers to take form of any dead person and look through his/her memories.

🟢S1E5- Who stole the water bottle ?

• Sawyer but he didn't actually steal it. He borrowed it from Jin & Sun.

Not to be confused with with the bottle Boone steals.
🟢S1E6- Who are the two skeletons on the cave ?

• Man in Black and The Mother, this mystery took the longest to answer, It was answered 112 episodes later.

🟢S1E7- Who hit Sayid on the back ?

• John Locke, he did it cause he didn't want to leave the island, he was looking for a purpose, He was in a wheelchair for years but the man never stopped believing that he can't do anything, He did.

🟢S1E9- Who attacked Claire ?

• Ethan

🟢S1E8- Who Stole Asthma Inhaler of Shannon ?
-She actually lost it outside the caves, We see in Season 6×05 Jack finds it outside the cave.
🟢S1E9- Where is the wire going near the beach ?

• To The Looking Glass station

🟢S1E9- What happened to Danielle Rousseau's crew ? What is the sickness ?

• So In 1988, seven months pregnant Rousseau with her daughter, Alex comes to the Island. It was during this time that her team rescued Jin, who, as a result of the Island's move, was traveling through time.

Shortly after Danielle gave birth, her daughter was taken away by Benjamin Linus, an Other. Rousseau lived alone for sixteen years, and over time became slightly disturbed due to her isolation.
She was in an expedition, operating in the Pacific along with her lover Robert.
She killed the people in the expedition because of the sickness, Man In Black caused the sickness which altered their minds and Robert tried to Kill Daniel. He try to do the same to Sayid in Season 6. He is a good manipulator
🟢S1E9- What is The Black Rock ?

• It's not a rock but a ship which came to the island in 1867 with Richard.

🟢S1E9- Who are the others ?

• They are a group of people living on the Island who were followers of Jacob, intermediated by Richard Alpert. Jacob never showed himself to his people, and they took orders from a succession of leaders They appear to have considerable wealth and power in the outside world, They've had many leaders like John Locke, Ben and Widmore.

One part of them lives art the temple. The old way and after The Purge happened and all the Dharma people were gone, One part of them moved to the barracks.
🟢S1E12- Where is Claire ?

• The Others kidnapped her because she was pregnant and They wanted to do tests on her because pregnant women for some reason die on the island. Who are in their early stages of pregnancy, Claire & Danielle were not.

🟢S1E12- What was inside the suitcase that Kate and Sawyer found?

• Guns and a small plane toy.

🟢S1E13- What's Inside the hatch ?

• Desmond and A Dharma Site named The Swan.

🟢S1E15- How is Claire back ?

• Alex & Danielle Rousseau helped her escape, Daniel warned her about the sickness but it was just a normal fever for Aaron. It was not the sickness.

🟢S1E15- Why doesn't Clair remember anything after escaping ?

• Some sort of Sudden Trauma disorder that happened.

🟡S1E15- Why did a random guy die near the beach?

• Ethan and the others

🟢S1E17- Who burnt the Michael's raft ?

• It was Walt, he burnt it

🔴🔵Why did Sam tooney go crazy?

• Unsolved but hearing numbers being repeated can make anyone crazy. So It's not a big deal, I don't think it's a big unsolved mystery but since numbers are the single greatest unsolved mystery in tv history i think, we can't say anything what showrunners were cooking.

🟢S1E17- Why is Hurley looking for Danielle ?

• Danielle was writing the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 & these numbers are very significant for Hurley so he wanted some answers and thought Daniel would know. She didn't, She wrote them cause Dharma was just always broadcasting those numbers from it's radio station.

🟡S1E19- Why do people have wierd dreams on the Island?

• It's just one of the unique things about the island, tbh this power by the source runs beyond the island itself like the dream Kate had with Claire.

🟢 In the dream John hears "Theresa falls up/down the stairs" What does it mean??

• Theresa was Boone's childhood nanny. Boone loved to torment her by calling her up the stairs all day. One day, when Boone was 6, she fell down the stairs and broke her neck

🟢S1E18- Is Hurley crazy?

• No he's not, He thinks he is cause he sees dead people but in actuality he has a special power which allows him to do so. He has a stronger connection to the source.

🟡S1E19- Why did Locke lose the ability to walk for sometime ?

• So he doesn't die and the timeline happens the way it did, I'll explain this more in the seasons ahead with time travel.

🟢S1E19- Who's plane was crashed on the island ?

• Ekko's Brother Yemi.

🟢S1E19- Who did Boone talk to?

• They were the passengers of 815 from the tale end of the plane on the other side of Island. Specifically Bernard.

🟢S1E23- What made Michael sick?

• Kate and Sun together out something in the water to make Jin sick

🟢S1E24- Why did Danielle stole Aaron?

• To exchange it for Alex.

S1E25- I don't think it's a mystery but there were no foot prints around fire which Daniel set, even Sayid pointed it out. I think she did it somehow with arrow maybe?? Why even mention a line like this??
🟡S1E25- Why was there a Dharma logo on a shark?-
Wierd things by Dharma initiative scientists guys.
🟡S1E25- Why did the others take Walt??-
Walt has powers and he is special so Jacob wanted him.
🟡S125- Why did the others not want the survivors of the flight 815 to return ?
So as Ben said when people find out that there was a man in wheelchair who could just start walking again, many people would come there, and it's not good because of the powers of the source, It can be turned off and it controls time, The others didn't like Dharma so they purged them, & the others are absolutely correct, had the people escaped the island, they would've told everyone about it and it is not ideal.
🔵🟡 What are the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 ?
So in Lost Experience The Valenzetti equation is mentioned it's an equation about the end of the world. Valenzetti theorem was given by Enzo Valenzetti.
" What if a mathematical equation could predict the apocalypse? This man had calculated destiny Itself. 4 8 15 16 23 42 are the numerical values to the core environmental and human factors of the Valenzetti Equation.
The Valenzetti's name was only ever seen once on the show, It was on the blast door map.
The numbers were on The Hatch cause the number is significant to Dharma cause their whole organization was made by Hanso for reversing this equation and saving the world. One of the factors in the equation is the population of humans.
Dharma used it to broadcast it from their radio station that's why Daniel Rousseau knew about them.
Also these are the candidates numbers set by Jacob.
The Light house through which Jacob saw the candidates had the °degrees written to watch them. So for example at 23° in the dial there was Jack's house.
The Numbers are one of the most interesting things about Lost, not all the magic about them is explored.
Most likely showing the candidates there destiny, especially Hugo. Who sees these numbers countless times.
🟢Who was the original Sawyer ?

• John Locke's Dad

🟢/🔴 Was Claire's Psychic a fraud? -
He admitted it to Ekko to being a fraud, Its possible that the psychic also had powers and a greater connection to the source, if he lied
🔵Why did the Bird's scream sound resembled Hurley's ? -
Genetically modified bird who's sound just resemled Hurley, Explained in the epilogue.
🟡Why do the compasses not work properly in some places of the island?

• Because of uneven spread of electro magnetism.

The compass is irritated by Electromagnetism generated by experiments in the Stations, namely The Swan.
So This season had only 1 or maybe 2 unsolved mysteries. & These are minor af mysteries.
