2024.04.21 17:02 Myth_of_Progress A Different Sort of Silent Spring: The Quieting of Birdsong 🎶 🐦[Science Sunday][In-Depth]

Silent Spring, Rachel Carson (1962)
There was a strange stillness. The birds, for example—where had they gone? Many people spoke of them, puzzled and disturbed. The feeding stations in the backyards were deserted. [...] It was a spring without voices. On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds, doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh.

World faces ‘deathly silence’ of nature as wildlife disappears, warn experts, Phoebe Weston – The Guardian (April 16, 2024)
As technology develops, sound has become an increasingly important way of measuring the health and biodiversity of ecosystems: our forests, soils and oceans all produce their own acoustic signatures. Scientists who use ecoacoustics to measure habitats and species say that quiet is falling across thousands of habitats, as the planet witnesses extraordinary losses in the density and variety of species. Disappearing or losing volume along with them are many familiar sounds: the morning calls of birds, rustle of mammals through undergrowth and summer hum of insects.
Today, tuning into some ecosystems reveals a “deathly silence”, said Prof Steve Simpson from the University of Bristol. “It is that race against time – we’ve only just discovered that they make such sounds, and yet we hear the sound disappearing.
“The changes are profound. And they are happening everywhere,” said US soundscape recordist Bernie Krause, who has taken more than 5,000 hours of recordings from seven continents over the past 55 years. He estimates that 70% of his archive is from habitats that no longer exist.
Prof Bryan Pijanowski from Purdue University in the US has been listening to natural sounds for 40 years and taken recordings from virtually all of the world’s main types of ecosystems.
He said: “The sounds of the past that have been recorded and saved represent the sounds of species that might no longer be here – so that’s all we’ve got. The recordings that many of us have [are] of places that no longer exist, and we don’t even know what those species are. In that sense they are already acoustic fossils.
Numerous studies are now documenting how natural soundscapes are changing, being disrupted and falling silent. A 2021 study in the journal Nature of 200,000 sites across North America and Europe found “pervasive loss of acoustic diversity and intensity of soundscapes across both continents over the past 25 years, driven by changes in species richness and abundance”. The authors added: “One of the fundamental pathways through which humans engage with nature is in chronic decline with potentially widespread implications for human health and wellbeing.”

Bird population declines and species turnover are changing the acoustic properties of spring soundscapes, Morrison et al. (2021)
Natural sounds, and bird song in particular, play a key role in building and maintaining our connection with nature, but widespread declines in bird populations mean that the acoustic properties of natural soundscapes may be changing. Using data-driven reconstructions of soundscapes in lieu of historical recordings, here we quantify changes in soundscape characteristics at more than 200,000 sites across North America and Europe. We integrate citizen science bird monitoring data with recordings of individual species to reveal a pervasive loss of acoustic diversity and intensity of soundscapes across both continents over the past 25 years, driven by changes in species richness and abundance. These results suggest that one of the fundamental pathways through which humans engage with nature is in chronic decline, with potentially widespread implications for human health and well-being.

Over half the world’s population now live in cities1. Rapid urbanisation, along with increasingly sedentary lifestyles associated with a rise in electronic media, changing social norms, and shifting perceptions around outside play2,3,4, are reducing people’s opportunities for direct contact with the natural environment. This so-called extinction of experience5 is driving a growing human-nature disconnect, with negative impacts on physical health, cognitive ability and psychological well-being6,7,8,9,10. [...] Global biodiversity loss13 is also likely to be driving a dilution of experience, whereby the quality of those interactions with nature which do still occur is also being reduced14 but we do not yet know the extent of such changes.
Sound confers a sense of place and is a key pathway for engaging with, and benefitting from, nature15. Indeed, since Rachel Carson’s (1962) classic book “Silent Spring”, nature’s sounds have been inextricably linked to perceptions of environmental quality16, and the maintenance of natural soundscape integrity is increasingly being incorporated into conservation policy and action17. Birds are a major contributor to natural soundscapes18 and bird song, and song diversity in particular, plays an important role in defining the quality of nature experiences15,19,20,21. Widespread reductions in both avian abundance22 and species richness23, alongside increased biotic homogenisation24, are therefore likely to be impacting the acoustic properties of natural soundscapes and potentially reducing the quality of nature contact experiences25. Indeed, given that people predominantly hear, rather than see, birds26,27, reductions in the quality of natural soundscapes are likely to be the mechanism through which the impact of ongoing population declines is most keenly felt by the general public.
However, the relationship between changes in avian community structure and the acoustic properties of natural soundscapes is nuanced and non-linear28—the loss of a warbler species with a rich, complex song is likely to have a greater impact on soundscape characteristics than the loss of a raucous corvid or gull species, but this will depend on how many, and which, other species are present. The implications of biodiversity loss for local soundscape characteristics therefore cannot be directly predicted from count data alone.

49% of bird species worldwide have declining populations — Source: Haskell et al. - BirdLife International
State of the World’s Birds 2022: Insights and solutions for the biodiversity crisis, Haskell et al. - BirdLife International (2022)
Data from the IUCN [International Union for Conservation of Nature] Red List show that 49% of bird species worldwide (5,412) have declining populations, while 38% (4,234) are stable[;] just 6% (659) are increasing and 6% (693) have unknown trends. Declines are not restricted to rare and threatened species – even common and widespread species are declining rapidly in some cases. Although decline rates in these common species may not be great enough to classify them as globally threatened, the substantial reduction in the number of individuals is likely to impact ecosystem function and the provision of ecosystem services.
The most comprehensive long-term monitoring data for birds come from Europe and North America, where surveys started almost 50 years ago. Analysis of these survey data reveals the scale of loss of total bird abundance. There has been a net loss of 2.9 billion birds (29%) in North America since 1970. These losses have been most severe in species associated with grassland and those that migrate, with respective net losses of 700 million individuals across 31 species and 2.5 billion individuals across 419 species.
A similar trend has occurred in the European Union, which has experienced a net loss of 560-620 million birds (17-19%) since 1980 from an area five times smaller. Patterns of loss are similar to those in North America – long-distance migrants have fared worse than resident species, while farmland birds have shown the most significant declines. In both regions, losses are driven primarily by declines in a subset of common and abundant species.
Data on long-term trends in bird abundance are much scarcer in other parts of the world. However, there is increasing evidence that population declines are occurring around the globe. Recent reports have highlighted declines in near-ground and terrestrial insectivores in Brazil’s undisturbed Amazon rainforest, and resident, insectivorous and specialized species in the agricultural countryside of Coast Rica. In Kenya, 19 of 22 raptor species have declined since the 1970s, while Uganda’s forest and savannah specialist species have also suffered declines. Citizen science is helping to fill data gaps in some countries, revealing declines in grassland/shrub and wetland specialists in India and seabirds off south-eastern Australia.

Bird population declines and species turnover are changing the acoustic properties of spring soundscapes, Morrison et al. (2021)
Natural soundscapes are under ever-increasing pressure from global biodiversity loss and our results reveal a chronic deterioration in soundscape quality across North America and Europe over recent decades. Although we focus here on birds as the main contributors to natural soundscapes, it is likely that the reduction in quality has been even greater, given parallel declines in many other taxonomic groups that contribute to soundscapes46,47. Furthermore, pervasive increases in anthropogenic noise48 and other sensory pollutants49 are also diluting the nature contact experience. For example, as well as directly impacting human behaviour and well-being50, noise pollution impairs our capacity to perceive natural sounds51 and can limit the acoustic diversity of soundscapes by constraining the bandwidth within which birds sing52,53.
A scarcity of historical recordings means any assessment of changes in natural soundscape characteristics over longer time periods is vulnerable to the impacts of shifting baseline syndrome54, as future soundscapes can only be compared to the potentially already degraded soundscapes of today [...]

Threats to Globally Threatened Bird Species (IUCN Red List Categories: Vulnerable, Endangered, and Critically Endangered, representing 12.8% of all extant bird species) - Source: Haskell et al. - BirdLife International
State of the World’s Birds 2022: Insights and solutions for the biodiversity crisis, Haskell et al. - BirdLife International (2022)
A wide range of threats are driving the extinction crisis, almost all of which are ultimately caused by human actions. [...]
The threats currently impacting the greatest number of globally threatened species [1,409 species identified] are agricultural expansion and intensification (1,026 species, 73% ), logging (710 species, 50%), invasive and other problematic species (567 species, 40%) and hunting (529 species, 38%), while climate change is already a significant threat (479 species, 34%) and will pose even greater future challenges.
These threats drive declines in bird populations through a variety of mechanisms. The most important is habitat conversion and degradation (1,336 species, 95%), while others cause direct mortality of individuals (862 species, 61%) or indirectly affect population, for example, through reduced reproductive success (510 species, 36%) or increased competition (134 species, 10%). Most species (90%) are affected by more than one threat, and many threats are interrelated – for example deforestation and climate change increase the risk of extreme wildfires.

Bird population declines and species turnover are changing the acoustic properties of spring soundscapes, Morrison et al. (2021)
Although visual, auditory, and olfactory senses are all important modalities characterising the nature contact experience19,20, sound is a defining feature15. Our analyses of reconstructed soundscapes reveal previously undocumented changes in the acoustic properties of soundscapes across North America and Europe over the past few decades that signal a reduction in soundscape quality and imply an ongoing dilution of experience associated with nature interactions. While we expect these changes to be evident throughout the year, they are likely to be most pronounced during spring, when birds are most vocally active. Better understanding of exposure to changes in soundscape quality, by mapping them onto spatial patterns of human population density and locations at which nature is accessed, and of the specific soundscape characteristics that support and enhance the nature contact experience15, is now needed to fully appreciate the implications for health and well-being56.
Reduced nature connectedness may also be contributing to the global environmental crisis, as there is evidence it can lead to reductions in pro-environmental behaviour5,57,58. The potential for declining soundscape quality to contribute to a negative feedback loop, whereby a decline in the quality of nature contact experiences leads to reduced advocacy and financial support for conservation actions, and thus to further environmental degradation7, must also be recognised and addressed. Conservation policy and action need to ensure the protection and recovery of high-quality natural soundscapes to prevent chronic, pervasive deterioration and associated impacts on nature connectedness and health and well-being.

State of the World’s Birds 2022: Insights and solutions for the biodiversity crisis, Haskell et al. - BirdLife International (2022)
We are in the midst of an extinction crisis. It is widely acknowledged that the planet is facing its sixth mass extinction event, with the current extinction rate tens of hundreds of times faster than the average over the last 10 million years. Up to a million plant and animal species are now estimated to be threatened with extinction, many of which may disappear within decades. The extinction risk of birds has been repeatedly assessed by BirdLife International for the IUCN Red List since 1988, providing the longest trend data for any species.
At least 187 bird species are confirmed or suspected to have gone extinct since 1500. The majority of these extinctions have been endemic island species, including 33 from Hawaii, 32 from the Mascarene Islands, 20 from New Zealand, and 16 from French Polynesia, most of which were killed off by introduced mammals. However, more recently there has been an upsurge in continental bird extinctions, particularly in highly fragmented tropical regions. Brazil has lost two bird species endemic to its Atlantic forest in the last two decades – Cryptic Treehunter Cichlocolaptes mazarbarnetti and Alagoas Foliage-gleaner Philydor novaesi – which a third, Pernambuco Pygmy-owl Glaucidium mooreorum, has not been recorded since 2001 and is therefore also suspected to be extinct.

2052: A Global Forecast for the Next Forty Years, Jorgen Randers (2012)
So, if you would like to see great biodiversity in the flesh, do it now. If you [...] prefer electronic tourism, you can relax. Most great biodiversity has already been recorded electronically—and in detail. Future audiences will still be able to experience beautiful biodiversity after the original is gone. But the real firsthand experience of the staggering beauty and intrinsic harmony of undisturbed biodiversity is something different. See it now; soon it will be too late.

World faces ‘deathly silence’ of nature as wildlife disappears, warn experts, Phoebe Weston – The Guardian (April 16, 2024)
For many researchers, disappearing soundscapes are a source of grief as well as of scientific interest. “It’s a sad thing to be doing, but it’s also helping me tell a story about the beauty of nature,” said [Prof Bryan] Pijanowski. “As a scientist I have trouble explaining what biodiversity is, but if I play a recording and say what I’m talking about – these are the voices of this place. We can either work to preserve it or not.
Sound is the most powerful trigger of emotions for humans. Acoustic memories are very strong too. I’m thinking about it as a scientist, but it’s hard not to be emotional.”

World of Akáhn
Welcome to the world of Akáhn!
In physical characteristics and indeed in the presence of life, Akáhn is very similar to Earth. Its uniqueness is displayed, however, in the layout of its continents and the unique flora, fauna and even intelligences that inhabit its wide and lush lands.
This planet is 3° C warmer on average than our world, with no permanent ice caps. Deserts, savannas and tropical rainforests dominate the landscape, with Mediterranean and temperate climates pushed to higher latitudes.
Magic, as we would call it, exists on Akáhn, as in the universe Akáhn inhabits consciousness is able to more directly interface with reality. Indeed, if it were to be plotted on a line, Akáhn would lie somewhere between Earth, with its free will but hard physical laws, and a dreaming state, where consciousness has total control over its reality. On Akáhn, minds can often bend the physical laws that govern them.
As such, the lines between "consciousness" and "magic" are blurry. "Magical energy" and "consciousness" are really the same thing, composed of a single particle, the Thaum, countless of which permeate all of reality. Theories differ on whether these so-called particles are part of the normal model of particle physics, or are something more esoteric, flowing from a source outside of normal existence. Regardless their origin, When arranged in special ways, these particles give rise to consciousness. The exact reasons this happens are likewise unknown, but the secret may lie in probability - notably, thaums are known to have subtle effects on the probabilities that govern other more traditional particles, allowing minds in tune with the ebb and flow of these thaums to control multitudes of individual probabilities, and thus, influence reality.
Because these magic-particles so thoroughly permeate Akáhn, physical phenomena can sometimes cause thaums to self-organize and give rise to personifications of themselves, or beings commonly known as gods. These gods most often serve as protectors of their respective phenomena - Anátel for example, patron goddess of death, sorrow and the passage of time - and act to keep mortals in check who might otherwise tamper with the way of things. On occasion, however, gods will intervene in the physical world for other reasons, usually to catastrophic effect.
The chief example of this was Endoliossar, god of the earth, who materialized eons ago and razed the continent of Erhondor to protect his favored followers, the Athazai, who are also known as Giants or Earthenfolk, thus prompting the War of the Firstborn (or Endogíataran) between him and many of the other gods.
Self-organizing consciousness like in the case of gods, however, is rare. More frequently, chance fluctuations of thaums will cause wild magic to occur. This can have any number effects, including storms, strange effusions of energy, and curious geological effects. And with the prevalence of wild magic on Akáhn, throughout the eons of its existence, lifeforms of all kinds have made good use of this ephemeral but powerful resource.
The natural life of Akáhn is diverse, encompassing not only biological organisms, but other kinds, with there being at least two known "trees" of life to exist on Akáhn. The first is Biota, containing all the traditional kingdoms of carbon-based life (or analogs of them) that we are familiar with here on Earth. The second, Atházan, contains lifeforms animated not by carbon and chemistry, but by minerals and magic. The most lofty of these creatures are the Giants, bipedal organisms of stone with crystalline minds inside their chests, who thrived before the rise of hominids several million years ago, and persist in small numbers today, narrowly avoiding their wholesale destruction in the War of the Firstborn.
The diversity of both the Atházan and biotic organisms on Akáhn is immense, but I have not the room to describe it here. Future glimpses at the world of Akáhn will take a look at the unique cultures, organisms, tales and nations that occupy its vistas and echo throughout its ages.
How did I make this map?
This map has been in the works for just over five years, but most of it has come together in the last one.
The climate zones and topography you see were done by Nikolai Hersfeldt of worldbuildingpasta (an excellent blog that I recommend taking a look at), in a commission based on my previously existing hand-drawn world map. The two separate maps I received from the commission I then used to assemble the satellite map you see here in this post. In the future, I intend to digitally paint a more realistic version with finer detail.
I used paint.net to recolor the climate map according to a satellite map of Earth, and used a few simple blur, noise and layer effects to achieve everything else. The ocean detail was drawn by me and had the same effects applied.
For map projections, I used the handy program Map Designer to convert my Equirectangular base map into the Wagner V projection used in the center and bottom and the Perspective projection at 50% for the hemispheres at the corners.
I applied the text in Inkarnate, but exported it text-only as Inkarnate is pretty horrible for editing raster images, and then applied the text as a layer in paint.net.
Thank you for reading! All questions and feedback are welcome. :)

2023.11.03 14:56 ghostgabe81 Respect Godzilla (Godzilla: The Series)

In 1998, the world was changed when a gigantic mutated lizard made landfall in New York City. Named Godzilla, it destroyed several buildings and laid hundreds of eggs before being killed by the United States Air Force. But unknown to the heroes of the hour, a single egg survived.
The egg was found when Dr. Nick Tatapoulos, a scientist who helped bring down the monster, was investigating the wreckage of the nest. The egg hatched, and the hatchling imprinted on the only other creature in the area; Nick found himself an adopted father.
This new Godzilla (often referred to as "Zilla Junior" by fans of the franchise) proved to be much more benevolent than his father, as well as intelligent, loyal and powerful. He'd often follow around his "father" as they investigated reports of new mutations appearing around the world, fighting off monsters that threatened his new family.

Note 1: The DVD release lacks subtitles, so be sure to turn on sound on Imgur!
Note 2: As with many giant creatures in cartoons, Godzilla's size is incredibly inconsistent. At times a human takes up a lot of space on his head and at others they're smaller than his individual teeth. At the highest extremes a mini-sub has been piloted through his circulatory system. The closest we get to an official height and weight is in the episode Clash of the Titans, where he's stated to weigh 60,000 tons.

2023.08.10 02:12 rubixcubesforcharity My first draft at creating a "conventional" fantasy world and story in a futuristic sci-fi setting, taking place in the year 12001. A long time from now, in a galaxy not so far away....

Mercury
Desert waste. Populated by solar farmers and scavengers, every day in the harsh environment is a fight for survival. Maglev trains and skippers serve as cargo or public transport for Mercurian civilians. Shipbuilding companies are regularly located here for immediate access to solar batteries and to abuse auto labor. In the Badlands, where no life can remain, “haunted” ghost towns founded by colonizers that either backed out or died off still stand.
Our hero (Saguaro?) is a thief and gambler, regularly running heists on freighter shipyards. A former solar farmer, his life turned for the worse when his younger brother was killed in a Titan raid. Now looking to make enough cash to get his own ship and enact revenge on Titan. Wields a quad-chambered slugslinger, a cable-whip, a switchknife, and an electric lute. His skipper experience makes him a great pilot.
(Basically space cowboys with a little robot racism thrown in. Function as the humans in the world. Skippers are hoverbikes and slugslinger is jargon for revolver. Expect some robots to take over the Badlands with the help of our heroes, since they're the only ones that can bear the lethal sunlight. Shade is still appreciated.)
Venus
Wild jungle. After the annihilation of Terra, agricultural scientists transformed Venus into a lush and tropical rainforest where they learned how to coexist alongside nature without destroying it. Using their genetic technology, evolved hybrids of almost any animal or plant in history can be found on the planet, either in the wild or in expansive biodomes. Venusians themselves have greatly enhanced physiology, senses, and longevity. They claim no land, believing it all belongs to Venus.
Our hero (Malachite?) is a retired ranger and biologist, who monitors wildlife to study and support any life she can. When Titan begins raiding Venus for its resources, she denounces her pacifistic oath to stand up and fight against another annihilation. Wields a scythe, a twinbow, and a hand-axe. Has a bond with her loyal raccoon-mouse, fox-wolf, and Venusian dragon. Carries herbs, spices, and spores to mix for various biotic and necrotic effects.
(Feathered dinosaurs, giant carnivorous plants, rivers of sulphuric acid, and DRAGONS; Venusians are elves, but they don't exactly live in a peaceful paradise. Techniques from Venus were stolen to terraform more planets and alter genetics system-wide. No one's results are quite as successful as theirs, though.)
Luna
Market city. The first Terran colony, Starport, has become a bustling economic metropolis. Lunar inventions such as automatons and universal maglev are highly valued throughout the system. Lunar quantum physicists have discovered “refraction”, allowing detailed control over the electromagnetic spectrum using conductive metals, such as gold, copper, and silver. Lunar coins are ring-shaped for immediate use in refraction. The Nexus, a virtual world created by Lunar programmers, is used for entertainment and socialization.
Our hero (Andromeda?) is a prodigy and the heir to the Nexus fortune, striving to follow in her father’s footsteps in connecting the entire system. However, when a Titan raid is discovered to have been planned using the Nexus, she uses her wealth and position to fight internal corruption as the slicer “Warloque”. Can manipulate heat, cold, electricity, magnetism, light, gravity, and even spacetime. This further allows hologram casting, cloaking, laser emission, levitation, telekinesis, time inversion, and wormhole generation.
(Wizards only, fool. What if wizards cared more about money and pretty things instead of making the world better? Gravity tech beneath the city keeps Starport at Earth-like gravity. Earth, or Terra, has become Luna's personal dumpster since its fiery destruction. Autos, or robots, are generally treated more equal here.)
Mars
Frigid tundra. Home to the Vulcan Facility, located on Olympus Mons, where volunteers train to become Peacekeepers and vow to protect the system. Spacecraft carriers remain in orbit to deploy troops when necessary, such as fighters, bombers, cruisers, and dreadnoughts. Watchpoints found within the Asteroid Belt allow Martians to monitor the system and patrol the inner planets. Peacekeepers stationed on land often pilot drop-tanks, massive mechs with quadrupedal treads and fully articulated flak cannons.
Our hero (Ramiel?) is a soldier and the youngest of four brothers in a military family. When Vulcan is attacked by a Titan raid, he agrees to undergo a treatment to become the first Martian super soldier. Taken to the secret, subterranean xeno-cloning lab of Floor -44, he underwent genetic and cybernetic experiments granting him superhuman strength, endurance, and regeneration. Equipped with industrial standard power armor, a machine rifle, a boomlance, and shatter mines.
(Martians generally have large, stocky builds to make up for the decreased gravity. Despite an average eight-foot figure, these are our dwarves. Not much mining though, mostly for water. Also, there's probably more Ramiels running around. With less and less volunteers coming in, drafting clones seems better than kids.)
Titan
Stormy ocean. Caught in a permanent tempest, Titan is a dark and unforgiving world. Long in service to Kronos, a cosmic entity who they believe created the universe. Titans are easily recognized for their pale skin and six digits, wearing masks of upside down skulls during raids. Their territory is not just limited to their homeworld, however, expanding to other outer planet moons such as Ganymede, Callisto, Io, Europa, and Triton. The six worlds are collectively known as the “Hand of Kronos”, with the intention to conquer more.
Our hero (Janos?) is a former member of the Imperial Guard, raised in a gladiator ring to fight since birth to become a master swordsman and assassin. Having a sudden change of faith during a Titan raid, he killed the Emperor when he could no longer witness any more cruelty. In response, the Empress had him imprisoned, his left hand cut off, and his left eye removed. Equipped with an energized greatsword and a wrist-mounted blade. He was personally taught Titanspeak by the Empress, allowing him to forcefully command others with his thoughts.
(Your baddies. Your orcs. Your dark elves, monsters, demons, undead, etc. All they really care about is expanding their crusade, more virus than man, leading from their flagship "The Singularity". What happens when you finally wake up from the nightmare all used up and you're left to fester in a dim, damp cell?)
EDIT: Each banner raised by the planets are represented by different colors as well.
Mercury - Yellow, Venus - Green, Luna - Blue, Mars - Red, Titan - Purple.

2023.04.27 09:18 Trueheart_RavenOmega Mass Effect: Naval Engineering Part 0 "Canon Observations and Implications"

Although I Tagged this as "Original Story", the story doesn't start here, rather It would at part 1 (when, or If, I get around to it), sorry. This here is rather the things I noticed in the mass effect canon, be it in cutscenes or codex. Now It's been years since I last touched the series so I might get some things incorrect here.
Asari:
The asari homeworld, Thessia, is the core of the largest economy in the Milky Way. The planet's reserves of element zero are so vast that they affect its price galaxy-wide. Because life on Thessia evolved in an eezo-rich environment, the world is home to a wealth of both biotically active and eezo-resistant species. (Codex Entry)
Furthermore, being uplifted by Protheans, their biotics capability skyrockets and are also given a Prothean beacon to make the Asari the most dominant species on Thessia and probrably the galaxy.
This Biotic dominance informs us on how they perform warfrare, with small groups of Biotic Commandos and Justicars surgically assassinating the opposing leadership rather than any straight forward fortress assault.
The above Biotic dominance, combined with the Prothean beacon left behind, combined with the natural reserves of eezo, also changes their technological evolution. It would be far more likely for them to realize eezo-levitation hovercraft before they play around with boats. And given that their eezo craft is gonna be more energy efficient than whatever water-traversal technology they had, boats would most likely be relegated to fishing boats (If they even fish to begin with).
In fact, it is when they went to space is the time when they would first encounter Naval Engineering, and it shows in their ship design. 2-4 static main guns that points anywhere except forward, points towards their naval doctrine. It's their Biotic Dominance doctrine, but in space. Use Advanced eezo drives to warp into the middle of the enemy formation, dump a few shots to assassinate a couple of ships, then warp back to a safe point before the enemy shoot back.
They found the citadel at 580BCE, to be generous, I would argue that their naval engineering started at ~700BCE.
Salarians:
Alternating between large oceans and landmasses covered in flora, the salarian homeworld, Sur'Kesh, is known for its humid climate and lush vegetation. As with the rainforests that once covered Earth, the planet's many forests enjoy a rich biodiversity. (Codex entry)
When in the series did we ever encounter a Salarian warship? I mean it must exist, given we are given 1 small fleet IF we saved the salarian counselor twice in ME1&3. So what gives?
It is most likely their war doctrine, both on ground and in space, that affects their ship designs. A focus on technological supremacy, stealth and electronic warfare, and the idea of "Winning the fight before it happens" mentality would mostly lead to Salarian ships being Cloaked ambushers.
Their planetside doctrine follows much the same, highly mobile cloaks and daggers, like the STG (and their various predecessors) would form the basis of their ground warfare doctrine. And it is a lot harder to hide a ship out at sea than it is to hide a tank or an airbase in the middle of the forest.
So once more, it is likely when they went to space is the time when they would first encounter Naval Engineering, given their first contact with the Asari in 574BCE (6 years after the Asari found the citadel), combined with their shorter lifespan and technological desire, I'd argue I would argue that their naval engineering started at ~625BCE.
Turians:
When the turians were introduced to the galactic community, an asari diplomat poetically described their homeworld, Palaven, as “a silver world of fortresses and fire.” Because Palaven's weak magnetic field is a poor shield from its sun, most of the planet's animal life developed metallic carapaces as defenses against solar radiation. (Codex Entry)
We would expect that the ever so militaristic Turians would have encountered Naval Engineering much sooner. Except not, apparently. Having metallic carapaces massively increases their body density (Anyone who works at nuclear plants can attest to the weight of their radiation suits), and thus can very quickly sink and drown in water. Combined with the fact that Water is by nature reflective, means that the surface level of oceanic bodies of water would have a lethal double dose of radiation. All in all, it means that a Navy is a big, big no no.
This impacts their war doctrine and in turn their space naval doctrine. On the ground, the turians have to rely only on tanks and aircraft. How does this change their aircraft design? Imagine you're an aircraft designer: but you need to design a plane that could fly from Washington to Berlin and back, as well as perfom air to air dogfighting, all of it in 1 takeoff and 1 landing, with no mid-flight refuel and re-arm. Any valid design is bound to be big, slow, and trade agility for long flights. Even in the advent of eezo, the turians would still value their operational range over fighting ability.
Proof of this can be seen in ME3, in the cutscene where turian "fighters" shows up in the "Priority Tuchanka" mission. Look carefully, and you would notice that, their "fighters" are really slow, like painfully slow, I'm pretty sure human WWII planes can move faster and more agile than that, and that's saying something.
For Space navy designs, they have much of the same, a single spinal mount cannon, to what basically amounts to a giant floating pistol, in space. And the only difference between a frigate from a cruiser and a cruiser to a dreadnought is purely size.
First contact happens in Krogan rebellions, at 700CE, I'd argue I would argue that their naval engineering started at ~600CE.
Other Species:Krogans: Uplifted by Salarians, No Navy post-rebellions.Vocha: No NavyHanar and Drell: No Known NavyVolus: Turian Protectorates. Merchant ships only.Batarians: Slavers, likely stole technology when and where they could, thus own naval engineering is irrelevant.Quarians: Whatever Naval Engineering traditions they had died out after they became the migrant fleet.
Humans: (Time to break canon for a bit of a history)
The first recorded sea battle was The Battle of the Delta, the Ancient Egyptians defeated the Sea Peoples in a sea battle circa 1175 BC. (Wiki)
Humans have started naval engineering for warfare since 1175BCE, and even likely earlier given that that's our first recorded naval battle we knew of. We knew naval engineering long before the Asari and Turians even started.
But what does this change? Everything. We started from Archers firing on boats leading a naval invasion, before transitioning to Archers on boats firing on archers on other boats before going for ramming boarding actions. From that, we went to fitting weapons onto our boats to fight other boats, eventually filling our broadsides with cannons with the advent of gunpowder. Then came Ironclads and turreted weapons, followed by torpedo boats, destroyers, battleships. Then the Carriers came along.
Our Aircraft technology has been influenced by our naval technology. While we started out with strictly land based biplanes, and sure our long range bombers follow much the same as Turians would, but our fighters turned out much much different. After all, what use is a 6700Km operational range fighter if my carrier parked 35km away launches much more faster and agile planes to swat yours out of the sky? Even with the advent of missiles and jet aircraft, you don't see Military experts arguing for slower and less agile fighters, do you?
Similarly, when we do get to space, I refuse to believe that our space warships would devolve into "Giant Floating Rifle with a thruster" style designs many sci-fi would go to. No, we would likely bring our carriers into space, and with mass effect technology, bringing back some of our older gun based ships to escort said carriers.
We got DDs, CLs, CAs, BBs, CVs, SSs, and various other classifications of ships with the revival of those class types in the advent of mass effect technology.
As a result, even with our inferior technology, our naval engineering and naval tactics should be far more advanced than the galaxy at large. (Also, A turian cruiser is 500m long, our Gerald R Ford class carrier is only 333m long. Take that as what you will.)
Heres a bit of maths. A 20kg slug traveling at 2% the speed of light from a Turian Dreadnought main gun (Mass effect 2 makes the claim that the human Everest class dreadnought fires a 20kg slug at 1-1.3% the speed of light in a funny moment) makes 3.6x10^14 Joules of energy, equal to 86 Kilotons of TNT, with a momentum of 1.2x10^8 Ns. Meanwhile were we to fire a 1 tonne (1000kg) slug fired at 0.5% would hit with 1.12x10^15 joules, or 268.5 Kilotons of TNT, with over 11 times the momentum at 1.5x10^9 Ns. Even if we reduce it to 500Kg at 0.05% light speed, tough it only has a 1.34 Kiloton yield, it still have 7.4x10^7 Ns of momentum, an impressive 70% momentum vs a turian dreadnought.
Why did I mention Momentum? In Mass Effect, Shields work by using mass effect decelerators to slow down the projectile until 1 of 3 happens: The projectile stops, The shield deflects the projectile enough to deflect away from the ship, or the projectile is slowed enough to be useless against the ship armor. Hence the higher the momentum, the harder it is for the shield to stop a shell, regardless of how much energy it actually yields. The Yield determines how much damage the shell does after it hits the target.
Combined with the fact that the classic BB layout (The Iowa-class BB is ~262m long and the Yamato is ~263m long) would have 3 triple turrets for a salvo of 9 shots, A human BB, firing 3x3 shots of 500Kg at 0.05% light speed would instantly flatline a Turian Dreadnought's shield, and 9 shots of 1.34 Kiloton yield can very easily cripple said Turian dreadnought, them being about 1km long.
This of course, is ignoring our carriers, if a single carrier carry 100 fighters, each with a 1000lbs torpedo with ~200kg of tritonal HE, with a sortie rate of 160 sorties per day... Sure, each torp momentum is low, but a Turian Dreadnought shield won't last forever, and when it breaks, the dreadnought's dead. And If the turians launch their own fighters to counter ours? Our fighters are faster, nimbler, and with our longer history with carrier operations and better fighter tactics, we would turn the turian fighters into flying coffins, despite their technological superiority.
And my plans for Mass Effect: Naval Engineering would be a story, not as humans as galactic newbies suffering a catastrophic first contact and playing catch-up while under the council's thumb, but as humans as the Naval Engineers we always were.

2023.01.31 10:47 Tobuzzu My attempt to explain leafspeak and leafwing photosynthesis.

(Looking for feedback and critique of some headcanons I sketched up. This is my attempt to explain leafwings and their abilities while trying to tie it down to biology. I know this is a universe with giant fire breath lizards, but it’s still quite fun to try. I’ve also made an attempt to explain and expand upon leafwing coloration and such. This is still very much in its rough draft stage)
How plants “speak”
In real life, plants are capable of communicating with each other through the air by releasing volatile organic compounds (shortened to VOC). VOC’s are used for a variety of different functions, from warning surrounding plants of danger, mapping out surrounding plants and their current health, attracting pollinators, or to attract predatory insects to prey on pests.
Below the surface, a plant can secrete enzymes from its roots into the surrounding soil. Such enzymes are able to be picked up by surrounding root systems, or be transferred across larger distances by a mycorrhizal network;
When put in enough stress, a plant may begin to silently scream, though such sounds are far beyond our hearing.
How a leaf speak dragon can “hear”:
A leafspeak dragon possesses a modified olfactory organ, allowing them to detect VOCs, though understanding what they mean is an entirely different issue. Plants possess their own rudimentary language that can't be understood at a moment's notice. The plant tongue isn’t something that can be easily described with words either, making recording learned info rather difficult. Leaf speak typically has to be learned through trial and error out on the field, learning by doing in a sense. The VOC’s of plants can vary between families, so learning how to understand the signals of a rose bush may not guarantee perfect understanding of an oak tree..
Pungent smelling plants like the corpse flowers are incredibly difficult to communicate with, as their stench can interfere with one’s ability to detect important VOC particles.
In some instances a leaf-speak dragon may be born with their ears fine-tuned for low frequency hearing, allowing the dragon to hear the screaming of plants.
How a leafspeak dragon can “speak”
A leafspeak dragon possesses a specialized gland in their palm and wrist, allowing them to produce a VOC of their own. This can be used to relay info back to a plant.
Other Applications for a VOC Gland.
A veteran leaf speaker can use their glands to attract bugs. For example, they could mimic the aroma of the marigold to attract any surrounding wasps and to repel pests. Or they could use the very scent as a weapon, mimicking the miasmic smell of a corpse flower.
(Perhaps this last one might be a bit of a stretch?)
How Leaf Wings are able to photosynthesize.
(Taking a look at our world, animals that rely on photosynthesis to survive typically require the assistance of algae. Lichens, Sponges, and Coral are an example of this.)
The green pigments on the scales of a leaf wing are the result of a biotic relationship with an algae colony. A leaf wing scales possess many microscopic nooks into its surface, allowing algae to take root and grow. From there the algae is capable of accessing the leaf wing's bloodstream to take or give back nutrients.
There are a great many types of algaes, each with their own environmental and dietary preferences. Species may affect the host in a variety of different ways, perhaps by using the dragon ti spread spore in a commensalistic partnership, or leech off as a parasite. In the recent thousand years, many strains of algae have been domesticated and selectively bred using leafspeak for more favorable results like improved disease resistance, durability, and speed of growth.
It's technically possible for leafwing to miss and match different species of algae on themselves. Such a practice remains rather rare due to the large amounts of maintenance and care required to do so.
Leaf Wings are all born colorless, but will quickly develop an algal colony of their own within a few days. Dragonets obtain the algae by accident, either picking it up through random algae particles lingering in the air, or from scraping algae off the scales of whatever leafwing was taking care of them at that time.
A great many ailments exist capable of harming algae, from viroids, funguses, or even from other species of algae. An algal colony is also heavily interlocked with a leafwing’s immune system, so if a dragon's health begins to decline, so will the algae’s.
A theory on how leafspeak came to be
A leaf-speaker's wrist glands are similar to some certain hivewing abilities, most notably the “super stink powers” (as Luna calls it) that some hive wings have. The location of the VOC glands also coincides with where silk glands are kept on a silkwing. Because of this, It's suspected that some form of proto-leafspeak might’ve originated from the Beetlewings before eventually developing into the ability we have now today.
Strains of Algae
Over several hundred of these dragon specialized algae have been recorded, with many more undiscovered species suspected to exist.
Notable examples: (Names aren't finalized)
Neverhome’s Mark: a dark green colored algae adapted to low sunlight, high humidity tropical environments. When the exodus occurred and the leaf wings were pushed into the Poison Rainforest, the tropical algae would quickly faze out any prior algae. This resulted in a large majority of the leaf wings developing a homogenous shade of green.
Raw Water: A vibrant pink colored algae adapted to high salt environments. Since salt water typically causes bleaching of most freshwater strains, Raw water algae would be primarily used by coast-line inhabiting leafwings. This rare type of algae originates from the pink lakes of Pantala.
Leviathan Blood: A vibrant orange or red algae, adapted to high salt environments. Similarly to the Raw Water variant, Leviathan Algae would be commonly used by coastal dwelling leaf wings as a salt water alternative to fresh water algae. This strain of algae is fairly old, and is theorized to have originated from a non-toxic red tide event centuries ago. (The cause of Cobra Lily’s red markings)
Things I can't explain
Plants growing exponentially fast: I'm pretty sure a plant going from a seed to a fully grown adult in a matter of seconds is physically impossible and there isn’t really much of a way to explain this other than magic.
Rainwings potentially having photosynthesis: I have seen some theories that the leaf wings and rainwings are related, which is why the rainwings gain energy from sleeping in the sun. I'm not entirely sure how they would do this whilst being able to change scale colors at the same time.
Feel free to ask questions and such, cheers!

2022.10.31 18:03 AbbydonX Robot Zombie Necrobot Spiders for Halloween

Robot Zombie Necrobot Spiders for Halloween
Real World
Since it is Halloween I thought it appropriate to write a post about necrobotics which is the recently developed study of the use of dead organisms as robotic components.
Necrobotics: Biotic Materials as Ready-to-Use Actuators
In this work, an inanimate spider is repurposed as a ready-to-use actuator requiring only a single facile fabrication step, initiating the area of “necrobotics” in which biotic materials are used as robotic components. The unique walking mechanism of spiders—relying on hydraulic pressure rather than antagonistic muscle pairs to extend their legs—results in a necrobotic gripper that naturally resides in its closed state and can be opened by applying pressure.
This early work repurposed a spider cadaver to act as a "necrobotic gripper" by insert a syringe into the spider's body and applying pneumatic pressure to replace the hemolymph pressure that would normally extend the spider's legs. When the pressure was removing the spider legs curled back up again.
https://doi.org/10.1002/advs.202201174 licenced under CC BY 4.0
Clearly this "technology" has lots of potential for Halloween inspired fiction, though it doesn't have to be limited to pneumatic pressure and spider corpses...
Sci-Fi Horror
On the metal poor planet of Arachnos, the native intelligent alien life have taken an interest in the field of remote controlled animals as pseudo-robot bodies. However, it has been discovered that controlling dead bodies can be more efficient. In particular, there is a large spider-like species that is particularly suitable in the dense rainforests of Arachnos.
A small control unit consisting of a processor, sensors and a syringe array is attached to a spider cadavar. The array then dynamically integrates with the hydraulic system and learns to take control of the cadaver. This provides a necrobotic platform to which various payload actuators can be attached.
When human explorers arrived on Arachnos they were horrified to find huge swarms of robot zombie spiders attacking at night. Discovering some of the necrobots carried projectile weapons was a further shock but the true horror was when they realised why the corpses of their dead colleagues had been dragged away...
Speculative Evolution
Perhaps a spider wasp could evolve such that after its endoparasitic larva had killed their host they remain inside like a macabre hermit crab. By manipulating the internal pressure their host body could perhaps twitch slighty until it was in a more favourable location to pupate. Over time their control could increase until they could lurch around with more purpose for longer. By secreting a waxy substance they could even seal in moisture to keep the spider corpse functional for a few days long.
Maybe the adult spider wasp continues to use the corpse as "mobile" camouflage from which to emerge and surprise its prey. Or perhaps its adult form becomes adapted to hunting from within a spider husk? In either case, perhaps the old corpse is only discarded when a replacement has been found?
Perhaps it is a little implausible but it seems a "fun" idea. What ideas can you come up with for necrobots?
Happy Halloween.

Twilight Resurrection
Part 2
“Alliance Headquarters this is SSV Normandy requesting to dock.” Joker smiled as he sent the standard request.
“Roger, SSV Normandy, clearance granted.” The Dock Operator said. “Dock 43 is yours.”
The man known as Joker smiled and nodded to his robotic companion with a happy confidence.
“You have not yet spoken to Anna.” EDI said.
“Yeah well, I'm not sure what I'd say to her. 'Hey, sorry your dad died saving a whole lotta lives.' I mean he sought out my family for Christ's sake. He...” Joker sighed. “How am I supposed to approach that?”
“Most people start with that.” Anna said as she walked onto the bridge with Captain Ashley Williams. ”Then they go where it takes them.”
Joker turned and looked at Ashley.
“Come on Ash, little warning next time.” Joker sighed and shook his head.
“It's all right.” Anna said. “Dad has a weird martyr complex where he doesn't quite see the value of his own life. He puts a lot of people before him, but if went to find your family wanted to help.”
“Yeah I know, but it's still a shitty end of the deal you got.” Joker said with a flippant tone.
“No arguments there.” Anna laughed as she looked out the window. “I've never seen Earth like this. It's gorgeous. A lot more green than mine probably has.”
Joker looked back at Anna with a tilt of his head.
“Lots of deforestation.” Anna sighed. “Especially in North America.”
“Damn.” Joker sighed. “Why? Do they not like breathing?”
“Oh the Rainforests are heavily protected, buy anything not qualified like that, its fair game.” Anna shook her head. “Probably going to get worse now...”
Ashley looked down at the young woman. “What's wrong now”
Anna took a breath. “Oh you know, an authoritarian government experimenting on genetics against people's will with a Cold War going on. Likely gonna be a wasteland by the time I can get back.”
“Damn.” Joker just whispered. “Captain the shuttle's ready when you are.”
“Come on Anna. Let's get you a closer look and meet Shepard.” Ashely smiled.
Anna nodded and followed Captain Williams to the shuttle where their pilot was waiting with Garrus, Grunt and a blue alien woman with tendril-like extensions that extended from the back of her head.
“Ok.” Anna nodded as she approached. “That's a new look.”
“Not used to aliens?” The woman asked. “My name is Liara T'soni, I'm a good friend of Shepard and Miranda. They asked me to ensure there was a biotic guarding....” Her head snapped as she watched Jack walk in.
“Uh, boyfriend's kid.” Jack scoffed, “Like I'm gonna let anyone hurt her.”
Anna chuckled. “Can we all fit?”
“Yeah.” Ashley nodded. “Who wants shotgun?”
“OH!” Grunt raised his hand wildly.
“Trick question, Captain gets it.” Ashley smiled and shook her head.
“Aw...” Grunt sighed and kicked at the metal floor.
The group then filed into the shuttle and sat Anna in the middle between Liara and Garrus. Grunt and Jack took standing room. Then the trip started and Anna watched as the bay became a field of stars once more, then Earth slowly filled her view.
“First time seeing Earth from space?” Liara asked.
Anna nodded and looked at the alien woman. “So was my dad a friend of yours too?”
“I briefly knew your father. His power was unparalleled. I have the last recording of him, he attacked Harbinger, the lead Reaper with an asteroid. The amount of power needed to move the rock at the speeds he did are astounding.” Liara sounded awed and terrified.
“Well TK has some advantages in space. Limited friction and weight being one.” Anna said.
“He never complained.” Jack shrugged.
“He wouldn't.” Anna said. “It's almost like working a muscle. The mind needs to get used to the idea that the weight isn't actually there, it takes time but once a mind can overcome that limit with telekinesis they're on a dangerous level.”
“And your father was able to manipulate and visualize in all three dimensions with ease.” Liara said. “He shredded several men with his mind without blinking when we all met up on Mars.”
“Bad guys?” Anna asked. “Or just enemies?”
“Bad guys.” Ashley and Jack said in unison then followed it with “Jinx!”
“No.” Garrus sighed, “Not that.”
“Cerberus.” Liara explained. “A splinter group of human supremacists who tried to control the Reapers.”
Anna gave a laugh that easily surprised Ashley. “Human supremacists? Have they read our history? Wait no, let me guess we're space orcs or something here?”
Ashley then laughed. “Some see us like that, yeah.”
“And these guys made it worse?” Anna sighed. “Yeah dad would shred them.”
“I understand you have your own abilities in addition to your fathers.” Liara said.
“TK, Telepathy, and my aura.” Anna said.
“And what's that?” Liara asked, pointing to a red ball on her side.
“Oh, that holds Rio. She's a pokémon. She helps me out and keeps me safe, she's like a sister and a partner.” Anna explained as she pulled it out. “May I?”
“As long as she doesn't weigh over two tons.” Ashley nodded.
Anna chuckled and released the pokeball, it bounced and Rio popped out doing her standard spin and salute.
“Rii!” She happily trilled.
“Oh my god that's adorable.” Ashley laughed.
“It is strong.” Grunt nodded.
“Ri!” Rio smiled and raised her paws.
“She.” Anna corrected. “She understands you all.”
“Amazing.” Liara said.
“Apologies, She is strong. You can see it in how she holds herself.” Grunt nodded.
“Ri!” Rio nodded.
“And she protects you?” Garrus asked.
“Sometimes things take focus, and she's great at watching my back.” Anna nodded. “But she also eats so much.”
“Rio-ri.” Rio scratched the back of her head nervously.
“I can't really understand her, but she's highly empathic so we can communicate on a basic level.” Anna explained.
Rio then hopped into Anna's lap and sat there.
“She's also a lot heavier than she looks.” Anna rolled her eyes.
“Ri...” Rio hugged Anna apologetically.
Anna just smiled and patted Rio's head.
“Well then she's officially part of the protect Anna team.” Garrus laughed. “Sound good Rio?”
Rio pumped her arm and cheered.
The shuttle's view then shifted from the fire of re-entry to a full view of the forests and snowy plains of Northern Canada. Anna watched as she saw places she could almost recognize. A loneliness she hadn't even considered then lifted from her heart as she immediately felt at home.
“Hey, I have a question.” Garrus said. “You're from Canada. Where's your dad from? He always skirted that question.”
“Technically he's from a place called Dross City, it's basically his home reality's version of Detroit.” Anna said. “But I guess he doesn't like arguing about that.”
Jack gave a barking laugh.
“Or he just got tired of explaining it, but I get that question a bit more often than I would have ever expected.” Anna sighed.
Over the next few minutes Anna watched the forests and animals below zoom in and out of view and then she saw a large cabin in the middle of the forest. The shuttle then landed and by the door to the building was a dark skinned man with a goatee and a smile waving at the shuttle.
“Ahoy!” The man shouted.
“Steve!” Ashley laughed as she got out. “How are you?”
“Doing good, they asked me to greet you all, they're on their way in from the city.” Steve said as the doors to the shuttle opened. “This her?” He asked as he saw Anna.
“That's his kid.” Ashley nodded. “Well daughter, she isn't a kid anymore.”
“Could have fooled me.” Steve laughed as he approached. “Anna, I'm Steve Cortez. Shepard's driver and head of Security.” He offered his hand.
Anna took it and shook it. She felt the emotions of a man who felt he owed a great deal tot he man he worked for. Then Steve shook the hands of everyone else and gave a few hugs to his old friends. After that he led them all inside the large cabin.
The cabin was clearly a modern home out in the wilderness, but that didn't bother Anna. The walls were mostly made to appear as logs as well, but felt like plastic or metal in places when she touched them. She also found a humongous kitchen that she was certain was half the size of her and her father's place back home. Then Rio jumped from her arms and stood in front of a large fireplace.
“Oh...” Steve stared in confusion, “Is that a pet?”
“More like a friend.” Anna laughed. “She's just as sapient and aware as all of us and can understand what you say.”
“Huh.” Steve nodded.
The group then slowly gathered in the same room. A few minutes later a door opened and shortly after that a wheelchair guided by its passenger rolled into the room, next to him was a tall black haired woman Anna could only describe as aesthetically perfect. The man in the wheelchair had a clean shaven head with multiple scars across the right side of his face. He had a blue suit on with a black shirt that had a letter and number on it, but Anna couldn't see what they were. Anna realized immediately that the man's right leg was missing and his left hand did not move. Steve dismissed himself to go get dinner picked up.
“Annalise Quain?” He asked as he made eye contact.
Anna nodded.
“My name is Dean Shepard. I'm a friend of your father's.” He smiled and leaned a bit forward. “He wanted me to keep an eye on you while you're here, but I don't think that’s required. Still they're not gonna stop.” He nodded to Garrus, Grunt and Jack. “Especially that one.” He pointed at Jack with his good hand.
“No.” The woman with him smirked. “One of her redeeming qualities.”
“Hey...” Jack said, then forced a burp. “I got plenty of redeeming qualities.”
Miranda rolled her eyes in disgust.
“Miranda, could you get the box?” Shepard asked as he took the woman's hand. “Both of them.”
Miranda smiled. “We have a gift for both of you.” She nodded to Jack.
“The hell did that sentimental ass do?” Jack sighed as she tried to hide a moment of grief. Anna felt it though as did Rio and both moved closer.
“Can't hide behind toughness with these two.” Garrus laughed.
“It's alright to miss him.” Anna smiled. “Would you like a hug?”
Jack blinked. “Would I like a hug?”
“Jack.” Shepard laughed. “Say yes.”
“Yeah.” Jack said as she looked at Shepard.
Anna gave the woman a hug and felt her father connect through the woman. She saw moments of happiness, sorrow and the last moments of him not wanting to leave. Jack felt something similar as her mind was shown Anna growing up with her father, moments of levity and then the last terrible moment of his death on a live feed.
“Jeeze.” Jack, who had been standing until this point, now sat and was eye level with Anna. “Christ, you had to watch that?”
“For two weeks it was everywhere.” Anna nodded. “Then I got shown how to leave and I'm gonna rip that jerk apart.”
Jack smiled. “Don't forget to ask your friendly Psychotic Biotic for help.”
“Oh no.” Miranda said as she came out with two boxes. “Do not encourage her, Anna, she's actually a good influence on her students and we don’t need old habits returning.”
“Students?” Anna smiled. “Dad likes to teach too.”
“Yeah, him and Shepard had a hand in me taking that up.” Jack smiled as Miranda put a small box in her lap. Jack just put it beside her.
Miranda then handed a larger box to Anna.
“We weren't sure what kind of clothes you'd have.” Shepard explained, “So we got you a pretty simple jacket and shirt.”
Anna opened the box to reveal a long coat in a deep burgundy made from a heavy synthetic leather. She looked it over carefully before realizing the coat had some light armor built into it.
“It really says something that the majority of my clothes are now armored.” Anna laughed.
“I know that feeling.” Liara sighed. “One moment I'm studying protheans, the next...”
“Threatening to flay a man alive...” Shepard laughed.
“I was never going to do it.” Liara sighed.
“Oddly, I get a similar vibe on that.” Anna sighed. “Studying psychology and now I'm fighting monsters from outside normal realities and have inter-dimensional mercenaries chasing me.”
Liara stared and blinked. “Mercenaries?”
“Call themselves the Mechanimals, they work for the guy that killed my dad. They're supposed to be capturing me but I think the leader likes tormenting me.” Anna sighed. “Jackass calls himself 'March Hare'.”
“I'll break him in two.” Grunt snorted.
“You can do that, if you can catch him.” Anna laughed. “Or before Polar Bear takes you down.”
“That is not a friendly name.” Garrus sighed.
“He's genetically modified to have all the strengths of a Polar Bear.” Anna explained. “Then there's Elephant, he rides in a large mech with an elephant theme. Mud Dauber is a woman in powered armor. Then there's Voltai. He used to be a friend of mine from home, now he's...” Anna stopped talking.
“It's all right.” Miranda smiled. “You're safe here.”
“Besides, you beat Kai Leng.” Jack smirked. “Those chumps don't stand a chance.”
“She what?” Miranda half suppressed a shriek.
“Someone used our old friend. Still not clear on who, but he was waiting for Alan to circle back around.” Garrus nodded.
“How did you beat him?” Miranda asked. “Kai Leng was so heavily augmented he could match Shepard back then.”
Anna winced. “A friend helped. A being called a Scion. They're helping me.”
“Why help you?” Shepard asked.
“They needed to question him.” Anna said. “They manage parts of the multiverse. Like when something tries to invade another reality, they work on that. Or if a reality has a sudden change in how its own rules work they fix that.”
“So they're gods?” Grunt asked
“No.” Anna shook her head. “They don't even want people to know about them. The less said the better.”
“Why?” Garrus chuckled. “They gonna give us a wedgie?”
Anna went pale.
“Oh they will, won't they?” Garrus sighed.
“Oh, one definitely will if he can get away with it.” Anna looked around carefully hoping that Garrus' statement hadn't tempted the Scion.
Garrus also looked around as well.
“I wouldn't worry about it.” Ashley said with a nod. “It sounds like a war is brewing outside this reality.”
Anna slowly nodded. “I think you're right, and I think my dad is picking it. He's free now so it makes sense.”
“He's free.” Miranda asked. “Why isn't he here now?”
“Our timelines are skewed from each other now. If we meet up, one of our timelines is going to take precedence.” Anna sighed. “And either way, we lose each other permanently if that happens.”
“That's fucked.” Jack scoffed.
“I'm trying to find a specific reality now.” Anna continued. “He left me something there that can sync us up. After that I find him.” She made a fist as she focused on her goals.
“And then the war breaks out.” Shepard said with a nod. “Once he knows where you are he's going to unleash hell a thousand fold upon his enemy.”
“Darkseid.” Anna nodded then let her voice and face harden. “Good he deserves it.”
“I wonder how many people he's recruited so far?” Miranda asked aloud.
“Knowing him, every angry bastard in the multiverse.” Jack smiled. “Hell he won't even have to ask me.”
“I don't think he will, Jack.” Shepard said. “He already asked you to do something he considers far more important.” He nodded to Anna.
“Yeah, well he should know I'm here.” Jack said with a smile.
“Oh god he's gonna get Vegeta.” Anna blinked as she realized who would be at the top of her father’s list.
“The anime character?” Grunt asked.
“Anime? Wait yeah Salem had a shirt like that.” Anna thought for a moment. “But yeah he's a friend of dad's. He's also just who dad would reach out to for a war.”
“Well is that good or bad?” Ashley asked.
“I don't know.” Anna admitted. “Because I don't know how collateral damage in the multiverse works.”
“Ominous.” Garrus sighed.
An alert went off from Shepard's chair.
“Ah, Steve's on his way back.” Shepard smiled. “Anna, you are welcome to rest here as long as you need and please relax.”
Anna smiled and nodded.
“Ri...” Rio said as she approached Shepard's chair.
“Well hello there.” Shepard smiled.
“She's a friend, she can understand you.” Anna said. “What's up Rio?”
“Ri-Olu.” Rio tried to feel for Shepard's leg.
“It's not there Rio.” Shepard smiled. “I lost it when I burned out the Reapers by turning their own signals against them.”
“Wow.” Anna blinked. “You beat giant metal space squids with math?”
Shepard laughed loudly and happily. “Yes I did. They didn't see it coming and I caused a signal loop that disabled all their ships long enough for us to counterattack. It cost me a good friend. My legs and the use of my arm, but I survived and they didn't.”
Rio then climbed up on Shepard's lap and hugged his chest.
“Thank you Rio.” Shepard said as he patted the small pokémon.
“I hope you ordered a lot.” Anna said. “Otherwise she's gonna be sneaking food from us all.”
“Oh I ordered a lot.” Shepard looked at Grunt, Jack and Ashley.
“Don't include me with them.” Ashley snorted.
“I like food.” Grunt said happily.
“Biotics take calories.” Jack grinned. “What are we getting?”
“Galaxy Exquisite.” Miranda smiled. “The Galaxy sampler times 4.”
Grunt made a happy sounding noise Anna could only describe as a childish squeal.
Garrus clapped.
Ashley nodded in approval.
Jack pumped her arm with a happy “Yes!”
“I'm assuming this is good.” Anna laughed.
“Samples of food from all the galaxy's races.” Liara explained. “It is quite a treat. You must have had this planned since Joker sent you the mail.” She looked at Shepard.
Shepard nodded. “It was on my mind.” Shepard smiled.

2022.06.19 20:38 Exotic-Intention1566 Athyrmagaia: Geography

Athyrmagaia: Geography
A rundown of the geography of Athyrmagaia, the homeworld of the Athyrmatherians! A big thanks to Planet Map Generator for providing the tools needed to make this map.
World Map
Biome Map
Athyrmagaia is a habitable exoplanet comparable in size, mass, atmosphere and gravity to Earth, and its home star is a yellow dwarf not unlike our own sun. Though it is not the only planet in its solar system to harbor complex life, it is easily one of the Earth-like planets ever discovered, to the point that some researchers have even referred to it as an "alternate Earth" of sorts. Even the distance between Athyrmagaia and its star is roughly similar, the main difference being a longer orbital cycle of about 413 Earth days. Athyrmagaia is also significantly older than Earth, with estimates as high as 8.043 billion years. Days on Athyrmagaia are about 28 hours long, and the planet's axial tilt is 24.2 degrees, resulting in highly varied seasons throughout the year. Two moons, nicknamed "Nicholas" and "Kringle" respectively, orbit around Athyrmagaia clockwise in a resonant orbit. As a result, the planet has an unusual, highly frequent tidal pattern, cycling between high tides, low tides, and even higher tides on a daily, albeit irregular basis. Organic life is also present here, in both unicellular and multicellular forms that can be considered "prokaryotic" and "eukaryotic". Despite evolving independently from Earth organisms, their biochemistry is nearly identical, and they have even converged on the use of DNA that has a double helical structure and four nitrogen-containing nucleotides. There are both producers and consumers in this alien biosphere, many of which can be compared to bacteria, algae, plants, fungi and animals and fill similar niches, though their physiology is nonetheless bizarre. "Plants" construct their tissues using polylactic acid instead of cellulose, and when set ablaze, they melt rather than burn. Microbial decomposers produce ethyl acetate, which has resulted in bodies of water that are mixed with the substance. The "animals", having evolved in constant exposure to both of these substances, are immune to them and even incorporate some of it into their tissues. The planet has also home to the Astutocentaurus, a cosmopoltian genus of sophonts represented by several species.
Athyrmagaia has only three continents, with the rest of the planet being composed of vast oceans. The biggest of the three main landmasses is Borea, a large supercontinent that comprises a majority of the planet's northern hemisphere and extends into both the eastern and western hemispheres. Borea's large size and coverage gives it a vast variety of biomes, and it is also home to a sizable portion of the planet's terrestrial biodiversity. The lowest latitudes are home to tropical rainforests and dry shrublands, while the middle of the landmass is dominated by deserts, savannahs and "grass" lands that are subject to rainy springs and autumns, searing hot summers, and cool and dry winters. This is a landscape that changes drastically throughout the seasons. During the summer, the plants that live here prevent themselves from melting in the heat of the sun by turning their leaves white to reflect the heat, and the star grasses that dominate the landscape survive the winter by dropping their leaves and going dormant underground. These harsh yet competitive habitats are sustained by the Takara, a west-flowing river that connects to the Comedian ocean. The northern regions of Borea are covered in temperate rainforests, and frozen tundras surround an icy north pole. The supercontinent is itself is formed from two smaller continental units (Loborea and Hiborea), and the collision of their plates has formed a mountain range that acts as a border between the southern dry lands and the northern forests and tundras. The forests further north look especially fantastical, with evergreen "trees" that bear festive-looking red-on-white striped trunks. Easily the most prevalent and distinctive land animals on this landmass are the Athyrmatherians, a clade of unique "composite animals" with modular bodies composed of detachable "zooids".
The second largest continent is the rather humorously named "Comedia", which lies just beneath Borea in the western hemisphere. The northern and southern regions of Comedia consist of shrublands and deserts, but the middlemost equatorial part of the landmass is dominated by both tropical and temperate rainforests. Comedia earns its name from the haunting, laughter-like sounds that echo across its landscape on a regular basis. Though these sounds are indeed quite harrowing, these vocals are actually the territorial calls of native predators. Between Comedia and Borea. Much Earth's Americas, Comedia and Borea are in such close proximity that during the ice ages, a land bridge would connect the two and cause biotic interchanges. Just like Borea above it, Comedia's terrestrial biosphere is dominated by Athyrmatherians.
The smallest and most isolated continent is Austrus, a diminutive island continent located deep in the southern and eastern hemispheres, close to the south pole. Austrus' southern half is comprised of temperate forests, while its northern regions are covered in savannahs and shrubland. The southernmost portion is prone to particularly frigid climes, which has lead to the formation of an ice shelf that frequently calves and produces free-floating icebergs. Named after our own planet's Australia, this small landmass has been isolated from the rest of the world for many millions of years, and unlike Comedia and Borea, Athyrmatherians are largely absent save for a number of volant migratory species. Instead, this strange land is inhabited by megafaunal descendants of archaic Enantignathans, terrestrial "vertebrates" with inverted jaws.
The south pole is dominated by a freezing, unfathomably deep ocean. The only landmasses that are present here are Kristiansenland and Frank Young, which are two very small islands that make up a very small portion of this region's habitable surface. While not shown on the map, large fields of ever-shifting ice floes and icebergs cover this area, and both of the islands have large ice shelves growing off of their coasts, which form an unstable yet walkable surface. There are very few terrestrial creatures that inhabit this largely landless place, and the ones that do live here are of Austrusian descent, and tend to be either semi-aquatic, capable of flight, or both.

This has truly been a pleasure. I have tweaked the old and have made new civs for this huge collection. It is quite a lot for a single reddit post. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I have done a lot of research to make these all unique and as accurate as possible. Although I don’t believe we will have any more Civ 6 expansions, it is always fun to think about. Plus, since these aren’t in any game, I don’t have to worry about balancing any of this. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.
But wait, there’s more.
I am not finished. Prepare for an up and coming post about another fictional expansion. Civilization VI: Reunion. The civ family is coming back to lead again. See all your favorites from previous entries lead your favorite civilizations. Eleanor Roosevelt, Augustus, Catherine, Hannibal, Nobunaga, Ramesses, Theodora, Nebuchadnezzar, and others. 20 old leaders return to the game again, with new leader abilities and unique leader units or infrastructure. That’s not all, some leaders are bringing back their entire civilization with them. So, are you ready to make a trade deal with England, or are you going to denounce Venice once more. All this in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.

2022.01.29 16:53 Lonely-Towel-4934 Ecology Project assistance

Hi, I am working on a school project. What you have to do is find an ecosystem of your choice and research on it. There is one tab that is listed as "Working Together" which states that you have to list the biotic and abiotic factors that work together in the environment. I can't seem to find it no matter how hard I try. I have chosen the Amazon rainforest and no matter where I look i can't seem to find anything. Does anyone know anything about this?

2021.11.09 15:46 Fahan17 what is the rainforest??

Rainforests are characterized by a closed and continuous tree canopy, moisture-dependent vegetation, the presence of epiphytes and lianas and the absence of wildfire. Rainforest can be classified as tropical rainforest or temperate rainforest, but other types have been described.

Estimates vary from 40% to 75% of all biotic species are indigenous to the rainforests.[1] There may be many millions of species of plants, insects and microorganisms still undiscovered in tropical rainforests. Tropical rainforests have been called the "jewels of the Earth" and the "world's largest pharmacy", because over one quarter of natural medicines have been discovered there.[2]

Rainforests as well as endemic rainforest species are rapidly disappearing due to deforestation, the resulting habitat loss and pollution of the atmosphere.[3]

Definition of rainforest
Rainforest are characterized by a closed and continuous tree canopy, high humidity, the presence of moisture-dependent vegetation, a moist layer of leaf litter, the presence of epiphytes and lianas and the absence of wildfire. The largest areas of rainforest are tropical or temperate rainforests, but other vegetation associations including subtropical rainforest, littoral rainforest, cloud forest, vine thicket and even dry rainforest have been described.

Tropical rainforests are characterized by a warm and wet climate with no substantial dry season: typically found within 10 degrees north and south of the equator. Mean monthly temperatures exceed 18 °C (64 °F) during all months of the year.[9] Average annual rainfall is no less than 168 cm (66 in) and can exceed 1,000 cm (390 in) although it typically lies between 175 cm (69 in) and 200 cm (79 in).[10]

Many of the world's tropical forests are associated with the location of the monsoon trough, also known as the intertropical convergence zone.[11] The broader category of tropical moist forests are located in the equatorial zone between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. Tropical rainforests exist in Southeast Asia (from Myanmar (Burma)) to the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka; also in Sub-Saharan Africa from the Cameroon to the Congo (Congo Rainforest), South America (e.g. the Amazon rainforest), Central America (e.g. Bosawás, the southern Yucatán Peninsula-El Peten-Belize-Calakmul), Australia, and on Pacific Islands (such as Hawaiʻi). Tropical forests have been called the "Earth's lungs", although it is now known that rainforests contribute little net oxygen addition to the atmosphere through photosynthesis.

Tropical forests cover a large part of the globe, but temperate rainforests only occur in few regions around the world.[14][15] Temperate rainforests are rainforests in temperate regions. They occur in North America (in the Pacific Northwest in Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California), in Europe (parts of the British Isles such as the coastal areas of Ireland and Scotland, southern Norway, parts of the western Balkans along the Adriatic coast, as well as in Galicia and coastal areas of the eastern Black Sea, including Georgia and coastal Turkey), in East Asia (in southern China, Highlands of Taiwan, much of Japan and Korea, and on Sakhalin Island and the adjacent Russian Far East coast), in South America (southern Chile) and also in Australia and New Zealand

A tropical rainforest typically has a number of layers, each with different plants and animals adapted for life in that particular area. Examples include the emergent, canopy, understory and forest floor layers

The emergent layer contains a small number of very large trees called emergents, which grow above the general canopy, reaching heights of 45–55 m, although on occasion a few species will grow to 70–80 m tall.[18][19] They need to be able to withstand the hot temperatures and strong winds that occur above the canopy in some areas. Eagles, butterflies, bats and certain monkeys inhabit this layer.

Canopy layer

The canopy layer contains the majority of the largest trees, typically 30 metres (98 ft) to 45 metres (148 ft) tall. The densest areas of biodiversity are found in the forest canopy, a more or less continuous cover of foliage formed by adjacent treetops. The canopy, by some estimates, is home to 50 percent of all plant species. Epiphytic plants attach to trunks and branches, and obtain water and minerals from rain and debris that collects on the supporting plants. The fauna is similar to that found in the emergent layer but more diverse. A quarter of all insect species are believed to exist in the rainforest canopy. Scientists have long suspected the richness of the canopy as a habitat, but have only recently developed practical methods of exploring it. As long ago as 1917, naturalist William Beebe declared that "another continent of life remains to be discovered, not upon the Earth, but one to two hundred feet above it, extending over thousands of square miles." A true exploration of this habitat only began in the 1980s, when scientists developed methods to reach the canopy, such as firing ropes into the trees using crossbows. Exploration of the canopy is still in its infancy, but other methods include the use of balloons and airships to float above the highest branches and the building of cranes and walkways planted on the forest floor. The science of accessing tropical forest canopy using airships or similar aerial platforms is called dendronautics

2021.11.03 06:02 Benster_ninja Mini-lore: Xith

"Come, our broods. Let us end this destruction and bring peace upon this world; the world of Xith."
Perhaps the most historically important planet in the entire galaxy, Xith is the capital and founding world of the Union of Worlds, the largest nation in the Andromeda galaxy as of the present day. Within the star system known as Eurmichor, the Burgonan name given to the star, Xith is one of seven planets in the system and one of two habitable worlds. It is a super-earth by our standards, having about 1.6 the gravity of our Earth and covered 55% in liquid water. The land is very varied, but deserts and other "wastes" are few and far between grand mountain ranges, flourishing rainforests, verdant plains, and stunning coastlines. The Biodiversity of the planet was of a wide scale before official colonization, and fortunately efforts to maintain said diversity prevented a large amount of damage from reaching its native species. Still, modern Xith has become known for being a very urban planet, with several cityscapes going out for miles on end and each one connected by extremely fast tram systems. It also has a very high population of approximately 17 billion citizens on the surface alone, 19 billion if you count its ring port and other orbital stations, and 28 billion if you count the populations of all planets, moons, and stations in the system. It is a major political, technological, industrial, economic, and cultural center for the entire Union of Worlds, from its founding species to its newest members. But what really is the planet Xith? what's it like to be there, to visit there, to live there? What are it's most famous sights, and perhaps its more unfavorable underbelly? What goes on in the hustle and bustle of politics and daily life of your average Xithian?
Notable Locations(Space):
  • Star Watch Station Prime: One of the oldest structures in orbit around Xith, Star Watch Station Prime (long for the SWSP) is the central headquarters for the navy of the Union of Worlds. It is around 20 kilometers in diameter if you include the ring which encircles it and acts as its first line of defense, armed with point-defense turrets, railguns, fission cannons, and six mass-drivers on-standby. Approximately two million naval and military staff operate at the SWSP, conducting daily and weekly exercises for travel security, spacecraft pilots, space marines, and ship commanders. The SWSP also serves another purpose for being the model for other Star Watch Stations, which act to secure interplanetary travel in Union-controlled systems, more or less as a police force against illegal travel and space piracy. The SWSP is currently manned by Grand Admiral Ber-tora Himorda, a Burgonan fleet admiral who is the semi-official leader of the Union navy and is a veteran of the 24th Silver Crusade from the Silver Empire. So far, very few shifty figures have escaped his watch, and hopefully very few will.
  • the Xithian Ring-port: The Xithian Ring-port is another major structure which encircles and rotates around the equator of Xith, serving as its second line of defense after the SWSP. It is the largest known Ring-port in the galaxy in thickness with a depth of five kilometers and a width of two kilometers, making it essentially its own world. Almost 1 billion people reside in the specialized habitats spread out across the ring at any one time, most of them transitory as they have to go through it to reach the surface of the planet. Larger ships, including freighters, naval warships, and civilian owned starships, are often parked here so they do not need to take their ships closer while they can take one of seven space elevator locations at the equator or the dozen other space elevators which lead to the planets surface. While also holding the title of the most maintained Ring-port, this place is where some of the more unsavory activity in the Xithian system takes place, where corrupt hearts rich and poor do business. As such, police activity is much higher here than on the surface and numerous temporary penitentiary locations are stationed here for convicted criminals before they are transferred to more sustainable containment.
  • L'tuka: Slightly larger than Earth's original moon, L'tuka is a moon of Xith with surprisingly active topology despite lacking in life. The gravity of Xith causes tidal forces to squeeze and pull the moon, causing it to become volcanically active and produce a thick atmosphere of carbon and ammonia. Save for a few scientific researchers, the population of L'Tuka is made primarily of military staff and trainees who use the environment as a training ground. There is also a subterranean super-max prison under the surface of the planet, left unnamed for various reasons but mainly so that the worst-of-the-worst who are stored there don't really know where they are (still, it's better than Helrusia). Let's be hopeful that nothing very bad happens here, or else a lot of bad things will happen nearby.
Notable Locations(Surface):
  • the Xithian Natural Reservations: Beyond the suburban areas of every sprawling city or the borders of small towns are the Xithian Natural Reservations. Here, land is protected by Union international law to sustain and support native life wherever it is found, from the smallest of bacteria to the most impressive of megafauna. The only way to see the wonders of the continent-sized reserves are to either train in the Union Expeditionary Corps. (who train here in preparation of exploring other planets) or find your nearest official reservation tour guide to lead you and dozens of others on a long ride (Despite the relatively high cost, it's still worth the credits). Some say that the political health of the Union is represented by the Biotic health of Xiths' very diverse biosphere and climate, which in recent times is stable but has experienced unexpected turbulence.
  • Union Capital City: With its' name needing no further elaboration, Union Capital City is the seat of power for the Union of Worlds. Spanning an area of over 2,000 square miles, it contains a population of 1.7 Billion citizens of many different species. While some species often need to live in bio-domes for long-term residency, most often Burgonans, Drefen, Unar'ians, and many others, advances in technology have allowed for most to survive and thrive together in the city streets. Major locations in the city are plentiful, including the Central Council Building, the Union Armed Forces Central Command (both detailed below), Transena Starport, the Interplanetary Wildlife Exhibit, and various monuments to events, wars, political and cultural figures, and all manner of other things. While crowded at times, large fusion energy plants and agriponic growing of food has maintained relatively high quality for average living, with sustainable development being a priority in maintaining the city (and by extension all other cities and planets in the Union of Worlds). However, not all is perfect even here, and a few thousand miles away it's a little worse
  • Retribar Gamma: The 2nd largest city of Xith is Retribar Gamma, named after one of the first new worlds colonized by the Union of Worlds as a united force. While originally built simply for extra living space, Retribar Gamma has changed to become the industrial and economic center of Xith. Melkronan Bank has its headquarters here (detailed below) while dozens of government industries and private corporations maintain factories in the city. While wealth is fairly common in the city, the amount of effort needed to run the city, even if using cleaner sources of energy, has caused local problems to accumulate. Mild pollution, waste excess, power outages, and not even mentioning the sewer system, this place has unfortunately been neglected for the most part. Criminal activity is frequent not only among the unfortunate souls who live in the much less maintained areas of the city, but also among the smaller companies who reside here and sometimes fight tooth and nail for any small advantage. This is often a frequent issue in local politics, especially after a break-in at Melkronan Bank only a few months ago by the criminal organization, the Infamous, whose name is now very fitting in Retribar Gamma.
  • Union Armed Forces Central Command: If this world were in a much less fortunate position, than it would be this building which would be the safest place to live. The Union Armed Forces Central Command building is a massive, four kilometer long and three kilometer wide pyramid-like building which serves as the central command station and primary training grounds for the military forces of the Union of Worlds. Aside from a rather large number of railguns surrounding its 4.5 kilometer radius wall, the building itself is protected by a powerful Photon shield at nearly all times, making it more or less immune to orbital bombardment. The building itself houses much of the on-planet High Command Staff (H.C.S.), comprised of it's high ranking Army Generals and Grand Admirals not on an active front, as well as over a million staff members (including soldiers-in-training). Here the examples of training a Union soldier are seen, ranging from active exercise on the outside of the building to combat simulations in the mile worth of bunkers directly below the building. There are even rumors of the deepest segments housing water-borne naval submarines with pathways that connect to the oceans of Xith, which at likely miles long. This is also where members of the Xithian High Guard quarters are located, the most heavily geared soldiers tasked with the security of council members of the Union and the safety of the planet Xith from any potential threats. This building and those who lived in it ages ago have seen Xith itself fall under attack, from Space Pirates to the New Terran Imperium, and still it stands as a testament of strength.
  • The Central Council Building: Directly in the center of Union Capital City, the Central Council Building is where the elected leadership of each sector of the Union and other vital members of its executive branch reside. While more expansive judicial and legislative branches (or at least their equivalents) reside near the building, this building and its vital council members are seen by the public as its most important public figures, acting not just as representatives of a sector but for their entire species. Common policy in the Union is enforced so that each Council member is to best represent the interests of their people, regardless of their internal interests or affiliations with political parties within or between species. Semi-ceremonial seats for the Council members are also reserved for when military leadership and representatives of foreign nations are invited to discuss. While the bureaucracy required is absolutely ludicrous, Implementation of A.A.I. with tandem with large groups of bureaucratic agents with numbers equivalent to a whole civilized planet make the process much easier. Still, even when being such a symbol of a free and just society, the Central Council Building is secured through all manner of protections. Guard patrols, security cameras and sensors, ID-locked doors and photon barriers, and the previously mentioned Xithian High Guard constantly watching their assigned council members. But once you get past all the security checks, the high rise building is almost certainly very comfy inside and you can see almost the entire city from its peak. That is, if you get in legally or without being arrested.
  • Melkronan Bank: Standing at 4 kilometers tall as the tallest, non-space elevator building on Xith, the Melkronan Bank building is the headquarters and primary storage location for the banking company of the same name. It's large, square base extends upwards to the sky, becoming more detailed and thinner as it goes upwards, till it reaches a pointed tip of gleaming gold. Here, quadrillions of credits are digitally stored and accounted for by a vast network on the Sub-net (An Ansible-based equivalent of the internet which is still in its early development). The Melkronan Bank, through its swift and effective action, currently serves as the largest bank in the Union of Worlds and has been for approximately the past 400 years. They have also been known by some to have political influence in the Union, especially in the outlawing of Mercenaries in civilized worlds of the Union and implementation of several social security organizations. While at first glance these seem to be done with good intentions, and they indeed have had beneficial effect, they seem to have ulterior motives when looked more closely. The current CEO of the Melkronan Bank, Irshadan Mu'liru, is publicly seen as a wealthy Burgonan businessman and even a writer of several economic books on his methods. However, whispered throughout the criminal underworld, some say that the Melkronan Bank serves as the center of a small yet influential conclave led by Irshadan which controls much of local Xithian criminal activity, and by extension criminal activity throughout the entire Union. Still, this is all rumor, but even in this there might be truth, and who knows what else is in that massive building save for fusion-powered supercomputers.
  • Sector 19: Once another large Xithian city, Sector 19 is the site of a large-scale quarantine zone which has been going on for decades now. In 5,923 P.F., the area that would become Sector 19 was once a political hotspot for a group known as the Nativist Party, which believed extra-galactic species to be a negative influence on the Union of Worlds and to an extent the galaxy. During the largest protests of the movement, a group of New Terran Imperium aligned terrorists unleashed a bio-weapon upon the millions of demonstrators as a retaliatory attack for violence against human populations in the city. Within only a few days, much of the city was infected with a virus known only as NTIV-5923, and was spreading quickly. The incident itself would cause years of conflict on the borders of both the Union of Worlds and the New Terran Imperium, while on Xith efforts to contain the virus became more and more extreme. The physical and mental effects it had on all species afflicted made it difficult for civil quarantine to be achieved, and a hard decision was made to physically isolate the city from the rest of the galaxy. Efforts to cure the disease were difficult, especially considering NTI modifications made to it, but a vaccine and eventual cure was found. But by the time it was, Sector 19 had become blighted not only by disease, but by corruption, fear, violence, and anarchy. To this day the city still suffers from remnant variants of NTIV-5923, made worse by decaying infrastructure and a criminal underground which still thrives even under Union police forces. It is a stain on the beautiful world of Xith, and one which the Union is try its hardest to clean up at every moment possible. While progress is going, it still has a long ways to go with smaller quarantine zones popping up every month, further hindered by extremists and criminals that make this effort to fix just one city even harder. Still, nothing is impossible as they say.
And with that, we conclude our overview of the planet Xith and life in its gravitational pull. An attempt at a utopia, born from an awakening and living in a fight against blindness, constantly in action. Up next, one more Andromeda related post, but this time a BIO which some of you may already be familiar with. So, until next time, farewell.

Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

1. Maysev - Onward EP 💎 [NËU]

Recommended if you like: Circumference, MISSIN, Synergy
Of course. In the one week that I’m busy raving in the UK, a complete newcomer drops a gem like this EP. You know what though? I’ll still talk about it even if it’s not technically from this week, it’s just too good not to feature.
For anyone who has followed these weekly posts it shouldn’t be news that I love nearly everything that’s part of the huge wave of newschool techy hybrid drum and bass spearheaded by the likes of IMANU, Buunshin and The Caracal Project. Furthermore, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that I love German DnB legend Phace & Misanthrop’s newcomer label for exactly that sound, NËU. They are consistently on the forefront of the best experimental weirdness to come out of our scene, most of the time from names you’ve never even heard of.
Speaking of, let’s talk about the latest new up-and-coming artist on the label: Maysev! Even though he currently only has 20 years of living on this planet under his belt, the German producer has already acquired a set of insane production talents that rival some of the biggest names of the scene. I would honestly love to include some specific tidbit about his hometown Regensburg like “I bet he’s only so good because of the super clean air in Regensburg”, but I know exactly nothing about the city and my internet in this train is too slow to find anything interesting out. Just as a little behind the scenes funfact for you all. Aaaanyway, let’s talk about this debut EP of his, the Onward EP, which is also this week’s Hidden Gem Of The Week™️!
Maysev kicks things off with the wonderfully dark and weird Tunnel Drive. With a little introductory descend into madness designed to sound like a train rattling over the tracks into a tunnel, the collaboration with fellow NËUcomer Matens shows the listener just how unique this whole experience is going to be within the first minute. As we continue on in our tunnel drive, the rattling continues just as much. In the first drop we’re treated to a techy-glitchy kind of version of said rattling, which cuts through the great ominous atmosphere in the background. In the second half M&M play around with the rattling so much you start to think we’re now getting a differently paced drop, but then they hit you right back with the techy goodness, with a few fun twists.
Then there’s All Out. Holy moly. In a sea of tunes that are essentially using the “standard” buildup-drop-buildup-drop structure (not that there’s anything wrong with it), something like this track hits differently. Over nearly two minutes of buildup Maysev shows us just how well he can manipulate all kinds of sounds to create a truly beautiful and engaging atmosphere. Just when you might think you know where this is going you’re swiftly hit in the head with an extremely unique yet powerful drop. I think “wow” might be the right word to use here. From there it goes back and forth between this all-encompassing madness and a stripped-back version of it, which is also bringing back and emphasizing the atmosphere established in the intro. After this, we slow down into a bit of half-time, allowing us to process what exactly just happened to our ears. Insane track.
Next up, we’ve got the quick-firing rolling sounds of Koram. After a relaxing buildup full of beautiful otherworldly melodies and newschool sounds you don’t hear very often, Maysev and his collaborative partner Secula plunge into an arrangement composed of very distorted rapid-fire drum rolls, the aforementioned weird sounds, and a whole lot of great glitchy sidechain action. That formula is flipped on its head in the second drop as the duo switch over to a good old 174 techno beat, syncopated every now and then to still keep the weirdness levels of it all high.
Last but not least Maysev takes us on a little ride through the tempos on Realize. First, we slow down to half-time, where the German talent shows us just how well his impeccable sound design works even in the slower tempos. As a fan of hiphop, I really felt the groove he was aiming for with this excursion into the slowness. However, my favourite part has got to be the second drop. Especially when he briefly switches over to full-time (not quite 174 apparently, but close enough) in the second drop, before returning back to the more relaxing halftime. I can’t even properly describe the sounds I’m hearing, all I know is that everything just works.
Even in the NËU-niverse, this EP and its uniquely beautiful weirdness stands out. When you consider that this is just his debut release, you’ll realize that this won’t be the last time we hear of him.
