2024.05.14 12:41 PunCala New player here, my two cents about CP2077 after beating it for the first time

Not sure if anyone cares, but I wanted to share my thoughts. Buying and playing Cyberpunk 2077 in 2024 gave a fresh look to the game now that the game is 'fixed'. My conclusion:
Base game: 8/10 Phantom Liberty: 10/10
Phantom Liberty, while being the best DLC I have ever played, had an unexpected effect of dampening the base game. After coming back from the excellent, thought provoking, technically polished missions of PL straight back to a base game, mission where completing a mission consisted of walking 20 meters to talk to guys on a motorcycle (one of which is glitching), was quite rough. PL feels like it showed the full potential what this game could have been.
Regarding the technical state of the base game, it is still unacceptable. This game is not finished, not even close. I don't really mind the constant glitches usually, but when the main plot quests glitch out constantly, it's too much. Even the final mission, the one and only that's supposed to work, glitched twice. Still, if CDR ever releases a remastered version that's done properly, I'll buy it.

2024.05.14 08:54 Meister_Cow Fitting Dielectric Data to a Cole-Cole Model

I am currently doing a research project in which I need to fit some dielectric data to a single pole Cole-Cole model, however am having trouble with the fitting function. This is my code currently:
% Read data from excel file, with data listed in 3 columns (called 'Frequency;, 'e_' and 'e__')
data = readtable("melanomatest.csv");
% Remove frequencies below 2GHz
data(data.frequency < 2e9, :) = [];
% Filter outliers using moving median
filteredData = rmoutliers(data, "movmedian", 50);
% Smooth real and imaginary components separately using Savitzky-Golay filter
fe = sgolayfilt(filteredData.e_, 3, 101);
fi = sgolayfilt(filteredData.e__, 3, 101);
% Define Cole-Cole equation
cole = @(p, xdata) p(1) + p(2) ./ ((1) + (1j .* 2 .* pi .* xdata .* p(3)).^(1 - p(4))) + p(5) ./ (1j .* 2 .* pi .* xdata .* 8.85e-12);
% Adjust initial guesses for parameters
p0 = [5, 31.4, 5.96e-12, 0.066, 0.005];
% Optimization options
options = optimoptions('lsqcurvefit', 'Algorithm', 'levenberg-marquardt', 'FunctionTolerance' ,1e-20);
% Fit the model
[p, resnorm, ~, exitflag, output] = lsqcurvefit(cole, p0, filteredData.frequency, fe, [], [], options);
% Check if the optimization was successful
if exitflag > 0
disp('Optimization successful!');
disp(['Residual norm: ', num2str(resnorm)]);
disp(['Exit flag: ', num2str(exitflag)]);
else
disp('Optimization failed to converge.');
end
% Plot original data, fitted curve, and residuals (optional)
times = linspace(min(filteredData.frequency), max(filteredData.frequency), 1000);
fitted_curve = cole(p, times);
residuals = fe - fitted_curve;
figure;
subplot(2, 1, 1);
plot(filteredData.frequency, fe, 'ko', times, real(fitted_curve), 'b-');
xlabel('Frequency');
ylabel('Real Component');
legend('Original Data', 'Fitted Curve');
title('Fitting Cole-Cole Model to Data');
subplot(2, 1, 2);
plot(filteredData.frequency, residuals, 'r.');
xlabel('Frequency');
ylabel('Residuals');
title('Residual Plot');
The fit produced does not accurately match the data points, and I think the reason is that only the first parameter (p(1)) is being adjust from the initial values, but the other parameters are not altered from their initial estimates.
Note: I am currently only fitting for the real part of the measured data ('e_') in this code, and the last portion of the code (from "Check if the optimization was successful" to the end was done with ChatGPT).

2024.05.14 08:34 milimji Blue Moon... Reawakened?

Good evening nerds, after perusing last week’s thread about synergies with Jace Reawakened, I wanted to try to start a more in-depth discussion of the archetype that I think might best leverage his abilities: Blue Moon. While the most obvious place for Jace is slotting into the Mystmin-style Dimir Lurrus control shell (and that’s probably just stronger overall regardless of synergy), I think there are some clear benefits to going in another direction, namely: 3MV sorcery-speed value spells to leverage the plot ability, more situational spells to leverage the loot ability, and snap/bolt to leverage the ult.
Before we get too far in, I should note that I don’t have a meaningful match history to show off here. Results have been mediocre as I’ve tweaked toward this current iteration, and I haven’t tested exhaustively enough to thoroughly map out all the matchups. With that being said, it’s a fairly fun deck to play, and I think it might have enough general quality to be somewhat competitive with a refined list and play. With the disclaimer out of the way, let’s get into the deck:
Jace + plot targets:
Interaction:
Other:
Sideboard:
Other cards under consideration:
Thanks for coming to my TED talk. I’d love to hear about any experiences y’all have had with blue moon in the current timeless meta, as well as any suggestions for adjustments to the deck.

Presidential
Liberal candidate John Kennedy receives 115 electoral votes
Margaret Smith received 38.57% of the vote
John Kennedy received 20% of the vote
Henry Jackson received 41.43% of the vote
Jackson defied poll numbers
While polling has consistently showed the election as a close race, almost all polls had the incumbent President, Margaret Smith, winning by 1 or 2 points up until the election. The last poll conducted on October 28th had Smith leading by 1 point, and Kennedy far behind both major candidates. Some have already begun to blame the Liberal Party and Kennedy for stealing moderate voters from another Republican victory. Regardless, The ever-ambitious Senator Scoop Jackson will enter the White House come January 20th.

First 100 Days

Revenue Act of 1965
The Revenue Act of 1965 would take a more progressive approach to taxation, increasing income taxes up to 7% in the highest tax bracket; all while lowering income taxes down by 4% for lower income households. The Act would also increase the Social Security Tax to 8%.
House voted 228-207
Senate voted 52-48
Mass Transit Tax Act of 1965
The second Mass Transit Tax Act would lower short range rail and air transport by an average of 5%, while increasing long range rail and air transport by an average of 2%. International flight tickets would be increased as well, by an average of 6%.
House voted 236-199
Senate voted 62-38
Minimum Wage Act of 1965
The long-standing federal Minimum Wage of $0.80/hour has been around since 1949, with no increase on the federal side of things. President Jackson and other Laborites were able to pull their weight and increase the federally-mandated minimum wage to $1.30/hour. Although the Labor Party advocated for a higher hourly wage, others in Congress feared a wage any higher would result in another economic panic following the near-collapse of the National Debt Ceiling a few years prior.
House voted 227-208
Senate voted 52-48
Department of Health Foundation Act of 1965
Founded the Department of Health and Welfare to help administer and regulate various healthcare practices and the distribution of Social Security, medical tax breaks, and more. Though indirectly, Congress soon changes the Executive budget to cut the Department of the Interior's funding by 40%; most of that money going into the new Department of Health and Welfare.
House voted 249-186
Senate voted 64-36
National Environmental and Water Policy Act of 1965 (NEWPA)
Championed heavily by the President and young members of the Labor Party in Congress like Edmund Muskie, NEWPA places greater regulations and laws into place regarding water safety and treatment, water pollution, trash allocation, dump sites, and recycling; unseen since the progressive era of the early 1900s. These regulations are expected to greatly improve the environmental state of decay for decades to come.
House voted 221-214
Senate voted 54-46

Death of former President, Theodore F. Green: May 19, 1966

This morning, former President Theodore Francis Green passed away in his Rhode Island home at the age of 98, marking the oldest President at the time of his death. Green was a member of the Democratic Party and briefly the Anti-Fascist Alliance, taking charge from his previous position as Secretary of State after the sudden assassinations of sitting President Earl Browder and Vice President Upton Sinclair. President Green helped uncover the “Business Plot” orchestrated in part by J.P. Morgan Jr. and Prescott Sheldon Bush Sr, the latter being the father of sitting Texas Congressman George Bush.
President Theodore F. Green led us through the horrors of the second world war after the sudden attack on Pearl Harbor, resigning his post and organizing a special election the year following the conclusion of the war itself. He was instrumental in the foundation of the United Nations and eventual foundation of both NATO and EATO two Presidents later. He was, and still remains a national hero in our hearts. President Henry Jackson, among former Presidents and dignitaries are expected to show up for his public funeral in Providence, Rhode Island. The public has been allowed to pay their respects at his grave site before his proper burial et to take place from May 19 at 9:00 AM to May 20 at 9:00 AM.

Foreign Policy Ventures prior to the 1966 Midterms

Embargo Act of 1965
Supported already by the majority of the country, Scoop Jackson directed Congress to pass a full embargo of all raw and manufactured Cuban goods on entering the United States through any port or checkpoint.
House voted 313-122
Senate voted 76-24
With the law being signed by the President in August that year, he would make a speech in Miami celebrating the passage of the act, glorifying its protections of American, anti-communist goods. Scoop would face some backlash over his anti-communist posturing, as the Labor Party has a small (but noticeable) sect of Communists in their ranks.
The Saigon Summit
In July of 1965, after riots against the French government in Saigon, and the breakout of a guerrilla war in French Cambodia, a summit was called in Saigon to determine the future of the city. President Jackson, President Ho Chi Minh, and President Charles de Gaulle met within the French administrative building to discuss the recent riots in the city and future between Saigon and Vietnam. Although much of Vietnam was granted total independence from French rule in 1950, French Saigon remained a thorn in Vietnam's side. France wished to keep as much of its dying empire as possible, and no one would fight harder at that than Charles de Gaulle himself. President Jackson wished to keep the peace and eventually coerce Vietnam into rejoining EATO.
Talks were messy at times, as yelling could be heard from the chambers the talks were being held in, but the three would come to an agreement. Saigon would be administered by a joint Vietnamese-French government, and policing and law would gradually transition to local and Vietnamese systems. In return, Vietnam would promise to not get itself involved in the Cambodian guerilla war.

Invasion of Saigon

In December 1966, a clash between Vietnamese and French police during a riot led the Vietnamese side of the Saigon Transitional Government to call on Vietnamese military aid. Within hours, the Republic of Vietnam marched into the jointly occupied city. Rumors immediately began amassing that the Saigon police force worked with the Vietnamese government in order to cease Saigon before the transitional period was up. Although these rumors were just that, President Jackson was surely worried when the news hit him the next morning; alongside the French Ambassador asking for an audience with the President.
French Ambassador Hervé Alphand would share with Scoop three things:
  1. France intends to treat the invasion of Saigon as an act of war.
  2. France is already mobilizing troops to southern Cambodia for a naval invasion of Vietnam.
  3. France intends to call on the force of NATO and EATO to defend “France in her hour of need.”
No matter how Jackson tried to argue, Alphand was keen on these points. Jackson would argue that the incident be investigated by the United Nations to determine whether it was an act of war; while Alphand threatened that American delay on the issue could lead to French withdrawal from both NATO and EATO. Jackson, reportedly furious, refused to be threatened by a “dying empire”. He denied meeting with any French foreign dignitary for the time being until they promised to allow the UN for an investigation.
The French response was quick, with France officially leaving both NATO and EATO on December 18, 1966. The French declaration of war and further campaign into Vietnam began on the 20th. With naval and air landings concentrated around Rach Gia, Can Tho, My Tho, Saigon, and Vung Tau, the Second Indochina War began. Although Australia would provide weapon assistance, the other nations within both NATO and EATO held their breath on what to do. France had left the two most powerful military and economic alliances in the world, and President Jackson could not be more angry.

Glasgow Conference of 1967

With the war having gone on for nearly three months, and French military forces having begun to get bogged down by the Vietnamese harsh tactics; Can Tho remained the only major French-held territory in the young Republic. And although Vietnamese war tactics were questionable at best; much of the world was united in believing the French declaration of war was not entirely justifiable; with President Scoop Jackson and General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev at the forefront of organizing peace efforts within and without the UN. Although the United Nations have begun investigations into both the Vietnamese invasion of Saigon and the French declaration of war, they both had gotten bogged down by the surrounding war effort.
It was agreed upon by several major powers to meet in Glasgow with French and Vietnamese delegates to discuss an armistice. The United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union, and the People’s Republic of China agreed to enforce the following terms:
  1. Saigon and surrounding territories that formerly made up the French Vietnam Territory following the 1950 Treaty of Manila shall be ceded to the Republic of Vietnam. Saigon and the surrounding territories shall become a United Nations sponsored demilitarized zone until an official peace treaty between the 5th Republic of France and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
  2. French military and bureaucratic personnel shall be allowed free and safe passage out of the cities of Can Tho and Saigon; sanctioned by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force. The French and Vietnamese governments must release all prisoners of war; sanctioned by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force.
  3. Saigon officials implicated in the initial invasion of the city on December 16, 1966 must release all official, personal, and private documents to the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs for investigation.
  4. Vietnam must retain its promise from the 1964 Saigon Summit to not aid or abet Cambodian guerilla forces or rebels.
  5. All combat between the 5th Republic of France and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam shall cease and abide by the above rules, the United Nations, and Geneva Conventions.
Although both nations had much to say and change in their favor, the above is the final version of the armistice agreed upon by all parties. The armistice paper was signed by:
  • President Henry Martin Jackson of the United States
  • General Secretary Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev of the Soviet Union
  • Prime Minister James Harold Wilson, Baron Wilson of Rievaulx of the United Kingdom
  • Chairman Mao Zedong of the People's Republic of China
  • Foreign Minister Ernest Charles Lucet of the 5th French Republic
  • Foreign Minister Nguyên Duy Trinh of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
Military Aftermath of the Second Indochina War:
  • 57,000 KIA (66% Vietnamese)
  • 12,000 MIA (81% French)
  • 72,000 WIA (52% French)
  • 134,000 Civilians KIA/MIA (89% Vietnamese)
Although the Glasgow Conference was seen as a great triumph of diplomacy between the major powers, Taiwan (the Republic of China) was greatly hindered in its geopolitical influence for the time being. President Jackson had recognized the People’s Republic of China the week prior to the Conference; Communist China would replace Taiwan's spot as a permanent member of the UN Security Council within the month.

The Better Society Plan

Plans drawn up between Pro Tempore Lyndon Johnson, Representative Claude Pepper, and Speaker Adam Powell Jr. would be taken to the President's desk following the first relatively calm year in the administration's history. Although much of the work on marketing the plan would be placed on Scoop himself; Johnson, Pepper, and Powell would act as the main sponsors of each piece in Congress. What would become the beginnings of the “Better Society Plan” would officially pass both houses of Congress throughout mid 1968.
Cheap Food and Housing Act of 1968
A large bill authored primarily by Speaker Adam Powell Jr. and Secretary Hubert Humphrey; the Cheap Food and Housing Act would cover extensive social programs. Although, with weak support in Congress, many Republicans were able to push to soften these programs and add their own agendas on top of them. The final contents of this massive bill were as follows:
  1. A federal Food Stamps program would begin and be administered and funded by the Department of Health and Welfare. Certain imported foodstuffs would receive a 15% higher tariff. All American citizens that either fall below or are less than 6% above the poverty line would be eligible for the Food Stamps program.
  2. Store-bought meat products will receive price controls to fit the monthly income of the average family. The Federal Government will cut 60% funds toward GMO Agriculture, Meat, Fish, and Poultry research.
  3. Houses that take up less than a certain area size will be price capped based county-by-county income. This job is in the hands of State Governments. (Apartments are not covered in this)
  4. Housing discrimination shall be made illegal based on identity.
House voted 241-194
Senate voted 53-47
Medical Bill Reduction Act of 1968
This bill was authored by Representative Claude Pepper and Secretary John Gardner in order to fundamentally reduce medical expenses for the youth, elderly, and medically unable. The bill however was weakened significantly by the Republicans in Congress, only allowing for those receiving Social Security benefits to have reduced medical expenses paid for partially by the Department of Health and Welfare; no matter if the recipient is signed on with private insurance or the Public Option.
House voted 220-215
Senate voted 53-47

Apollo 8: Americans on the Moon in November 1968!

Thanks to streamlined efforts by Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Margaret Smith the past 11 years, NASA and furthermore America were able to place the first men on the moon on November 12, 1967. In a speech made on national television that night in the hour following the conclusion of the live coverage of the moon landing, Scoop Jackson would put much of his thanks on the “Greatest mind our nation has ever had,” referring to Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer, since 1961, has been placed in a secondary charge of the Apollo missions and a potential moon landing until his resignation in January 1967 and death the following month. Dr. Oppenheimer's expertise in theory and former President Smith's dedication for space exploration are likely candidates as to the victory America achieved that night.

The United Nations has concluded their investigation into the potential legality and coercion in the events leading up to the invasion of Saigon.
“While France has made compelling arguments for the contrary, regarding available documents and other pieces of evidence, the Vietnamese military occupation of Saigon was not a result of coercion, manipulation, embezzlement, bribery, or corruption within the Republic of Vietnam. The invitation of Vietnamese armed forces into the territory limits was done by the legal Vietnamese co-government of said territory, and therefore, is deemed a semi-legal occupation of the city. The United Nations upholds the results of the Glasgow Conference.”

Gearing up for Reelection: A look at Potential Challengers

Notable Republicans that have declared candidacy
Former Vice President, Richard Nixon
https://preview.redd.it/s64vumfxub0d1.jpg?width=3739&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1bff3f91005f9ed3559abb1334db75eac181ae75
Richard Nixon is back at it with his 4th attempt at a Presidential run, and if he wins the nomination or is selected as a running mate, 3rd attempt on a Presidential ticket. He is generally a moderate, but is definitely the wildcard. Despite his past of losing elections, he is somehow the safest, and perhaps most dangerous, to the Jackson administration.
Governor Ronald Reagan
https://preview.redd.it/bjb887w4vb0d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7cdd34a9a2caf74d4b7b2a18233bc141bc975e20
The Governor of California has perhaps one of the most charismatic voices in the nation, and is definitely a threat should he receive the Republican nomination. While he is charismatic, he is also the most Conservative of the major players for the Republican nomination. Reagan has instituted a mix of conservative and liberal policy as Governor of California, but has spouted rhetoric like all the former dixiecrats; just without blatant racism. Scoop believes Reagan is not only a credible threat to his Presidency, but also a threat to minority groups nationwide.
“Draft Jack Kennedy” and “Draft Bobby Kennedy”
https://preview.redd.it/s601w5x9vb0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b99970534ba3ec17d1e7147231d0b5b45ad22e3
Despite neither Kennedy having decided to throw their hat in the ring this year, 1960 and 1964 Presidential candidate John Kennedy has received some support among anti-nixon moderates for the head of the ticket later this year. He has an air of charisma around him, much like his fellow Republican Ronald Reagan, but Kennedy has only commented on the matter stating he is “far too tired” for 3 Presidential runs in a row. The Senator's health is seemingly beginning to fail, as well. Despite the unlikeliness of the matter, Jackson is prepared to deal with Jack Kennedy again if he wins a draft.
Opposed to his older brother, Governor Robert Kennedy has remained Non-Partisan since the fall of the Liberal Party 3 years prior. Bobby has had moderate support from both parties since the beginning of his governorship in 1963. Despite this, and probably with wishes to go against one of his brothers, Bobby Kennedy has denied to run or entertain a draft movement in his name. Scoop has declared Bobby to be of little threat.
Other potential challengers
Senator Russel Long
https://preview.redd.it/vazyz7xevb0d1.jpg?width=223&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4693e838065dc8a3f31cf21f5d3cb8bece24dfc6
The long-serving Senator and son of former President Huey Long has walked the line of conservative, liberal, and progressive support throughout his career. In recent years, he has become more supportive of progressive social policies, and definitely leans economically toward Labor; but his reach across rural southerners matches a more populist approach. Long has already declared his independent candidacy for President. If Nixon isn't one, Long is certainly the most dangerous wildcard if he plays his hand right. Scoop will closely watch him.

Chris and Freya's goal in the WCS was to try and put themselves and the rest of the team on the map by making it to the top 50. They are close to succeeding at this, but when the new fights are scheduled, it becomes clear that they may be able to go even farther, possibly even finally defeating a regional champion, if only they can make their way through several gruelling battles against their very own 'Elite 5'.

2024.05.14 01:32 Desperate_Writing101 Wool’s Orphanage

I’ve been googling to try to find out the common practices of ‘dingy orphanages ’ in the 20s/30s but maybe someone with a better grasp on history could help me out. I was just wondering what life may have been like for Tom prior to Hogwarts. Looking for general ideas and theories anyone might have/what the ‘norm’ would have been.
Would he have been taught to read/write? Would he have possibly been working already, helping out on farms like a few programs I’ve seen were developed in that time period for orphans? Was his ‘magic’ possibly a bad omen to some around him - would excorcisim/religious intervention been attempted or possession suspected?
It’s for a FF, so I know I could be a bit creative, but it’s not the main plot by any means so historical accuracy is something I am interested in following. I mostly am curious about how much education Tom may have had prior to Hogwarts; obviously he was very gifted and excelled in later years, but during the first few months would he have been playing ‘catch up’ given his background?
Thanks!

2024.05.13 23:50 Lisbeth_Salandar Peaches & Honey by R Raeta: love that lasts centuries

I just finished {Peaches & Honey: These Immortal Truths by R Raeta} and had to come straight here to rave about it!

Synopsis

Anna is a young, poor woman in England 1184, outcasted for her vitiligo. Struggling to survive on her own, she one day saves a girl in dire circumstances. This girl - actually a god in disguise - thanks her with the gift of a divine peach. Anna eats the entire thing, intrigued by its hollow center and lack of a seed. The peach grants Anna a gift: her wounds heal faster than they can kill her. But this gift comes with the challenges of outliving everyone she has ever known or will ever know. As the centuries pass, the only constant in her life is that her creator - Khiran - always returns to see her.

Review

The often-made comparison between this and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue are very apt. That book is pretty polarizing, but I actually liked it quite a bit. However, I liked this one even better. This is the first book in a duology.
This book was excellent for a lot of different reasons:
  • Beautiful, lyrical prose
  • Anna is a deserving and kindhearted FMC, with not an ounce of sass or irony
  • Khiran is an intriguing MMC, a powerful and somewhat depressed man who wishes to live in a world of Anna's creation
  • Khiran's chemistry with Anna leaps off the page
  • Lovely historical settings, cultures, time periods, and people give each chapter a fresh feel
  • More character driven than plot driven, but with characters this great, that's a good thing
  • Deeply romantic pining over centuries
  • Third person POV
My only complaints about this book are quite minor:
  • At some point, it does seem a little silly that Anna just so happens to experience many major world events that a freshman in high school would learn in history class. I mean, yeah she just so happens to be in London during Jack the Ripper and in the US during the Civil War and underground railroad and in Italy during the initial spread of the black plague and in Spain during the first circumnavigation of the world and expansion into the New World and in Boston during the Boston Tea Partyand she's in Germany leading up to WWII At some point those coincidences do seem improbable and very western-centric (only one chapter focuses on the east; a chapter on China and piracy).
  • In addition, there are a 4-5 times in the story that anachronisms pop up that really stood out to me; calling the War of the Rebellion / War for Southern Independence the "American Civil War" in the 1860s just doesn't make sense. Referring to German LGBTQ+ people as "gay" in the 1930s when that term just didn't exist in that context then...
These complaints are very minor, however, because the prose is so beautiful and the characters are so wonderful to read about and experience all these different events through their eyes. The occassional incorrect, anachronistic word used every hundred pages or so is truly not a stumbling block to enjoying this book.
I couldn't put this book down and I am very eager for book 2 to come out in early June!

This book is for you if you like:

  • Flowery, purple prose
  • Slow burn romances
  • Subtle, slow-moving fantasy elements
  • Historical time periods
  • Character-driven stories
  • Mature, complex, deeply human characters
  • The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and/or wanted a kinder, more loving version of that book
  • Books that are free on KU (and currently on sale if you wanna buy it)
  • Stories where even minor characters feel like real humans
  • Stories where the FMC is loved because of her genuine kindness rather than for her beauty or some inexplicable quality that draws others to her
  • Books featuring insecurity due to feeling like an outsider
  • A really cool take on magic / gods / powers that feels almost mythical

Quotes

That night, when she curls up under the blanket and lets the tears drip silently from her cheeks, she wonders how it’s possible to grieve the loss of something she never expected to have.
.
“What we want isn’t always what we need,” Eira says, setting the jar on the table before reaching out and setting her ancient hands on Anna’s shoulders. “Immortality is a fickle beast, dear girl. Stay too long in one place and you’ll rot there.” “But I’m happy—” “No,” she interrupts, “You’re not unhappy. It’s not the same.”
.
Truths are for those who can afford to live it, not for those struggling to find any bright spot of light in a world that casts them into darkness.
.
“It’s easy to be righteous, to be angry, when you weren’t there to see all the blood and misery that came before you,” he says. “Most of these soldiers will only ever see one war firsthand in their lifetime. The ones who survive will grow old and sit in front of their hearths and pass stories of this battle to their children and grandchildren. They’ll romanticize it. Sing praises of how bravely their battalion fought. They won’t speak of the squelch of their fellow friend and soldier’s blood in their boots, or the fear that painted every soldier’s face. Enemy and ally alike.”

2024.05.13 21:06 unfortunatelymade Identity switch discussion

Identity switch discussion
okay so I have been going over lore again and have once again opened up the pandoras box that is identity swapping. There are a few theories I'm running with, and I'll explain them below.
  1. Identity switch is just characters hallucinations based on their perception of the character (drug plot)
This one mostly stems from fools gold and memory. Fools gold is one of the few characters who have had multiple 'canon' designs. One from go hunting where we see a much beefier version of fools gold, and the one we have in game where he's a bit more... slay. We know that this fools gold is from Orpheus' perception of Norton, so when the pov swapped to Alice it can be assumed that the fools gold in game is from Alice's perception of Norton. In both scenarios, Norton isn't actually turning into a giant rock monster, but instead Orpheus and Alice respectively are imagining Norton as a bloodthirsty monster after seeing him 'kill' (unconfirmed) Melly.
Additionally for this theory we have two other identity swaps: Nightmare and Memory. Both of these are connected to Orpheus, Nightmare being a manifestation what Orpheus imagines his 'evil' half as, and Memory as the manifestation of his childhood memories with Alice. We also have the case of Clown, where we are told that Margaretha mistook him as the Smiling clown, Sergei, under the influence of drugs in her 2022 letter. This is probably the most explicit mention of a hunter being a hallucination we get, but there are still some points that I think are worth mentioning that I will get to later. In all of these scenarios, the hunters aren't actually real but instead just illusions manifested from the characters' point of view.
With this theory, we can confirm which version of the character is 'canon' and which one is fictitious. For all of these scenarios, there is no identity switch where the hunter version is canon. This isn't to say that there are no hunters at all however, as we know several hunters are 100% without a doubt canonical. For instance, both Mad eyes and Bonbon are completely canon to the manor, as Burke is one of the main architects ensuring the manor's functionality and even interfering with certain games as necessary. Bonbon, as a creation of Burke's, is also a real concrete hunter we know for certain exists in canon. I wouldn't say we should worry that all hunters are 'actually just drug induced hallucinations' because that isn't true. I do hope we get more identity swaps that go the other way though, where the survivor isn't real.
  1. Identity switch is just characters at different points in time (Supernatural plot)
This theory is from both Clown and Lizard, because they both have similar inconsistencies with their stories if we were assuming drug plot was the be all end all, and why I made this post. Both of them we know for certain were once in their survivor forms. Lizard arrives at the manor for his first game as professor, we know this from his 2021 letter from the point of view of seer, where he describes him looking exactly as we see his survivor form. Hence we know that this is really how Luchino arrived at the manor. However, unlike the others we actually have evidence that Luchino as a hunter was also real. Not only did he survive the first game, but the baron in his letter specifically calls out "In the information we previously gathered, the ignorant fishermen spoke confidently about the "mysterious existence" within the lake. I, too, have seen a similar monster, but perhaps I'll be lucky enough to observe and conduct experiments to form a more rigorous theory on it (...) The Group 6 experiment can be restarted by placing Luchino Diruse back at the Lakeside Village test site with other "unique but dangerous" test subjects from other groups." This implies that the baron plans to allow Luchino to undergo some kind of exposure to these 'mysterious existences' at the lake, and further in his next letter we get an excerpt echoing a similar statement, "I discovered something akin to medicine that exceeded my understanding, and at this very moment, it is eating away at my sanity. This trip is not long, but I've spent my nights suppressing the inhuman desire within me and battling against that ""instinct.""
This seems to imply that Luchino is in fact going through some kind of metamorphosis of his own, after all he had his reality shattered by the existence of Seer having powers beyond his comprehension, and what seems like something that echoes the exposition of supernatural forces. It's also worth mentioning that we have no written media from Luchino as a hunter, at least not as far as I've seen. It is entirely possible that this is because during this second game, he had already lost his mind and become the lizard man we all know and love. This would also confirm the existence of the gods at lakeside (Who I am assuming is either feaster or dream witch, I don't know enough on their lore to speak on it) which would also be a plausible cause for him going full lizard.
Weeping clown also has a potentially similar deal, where we know that he was once a pathetic circus clown, and described as being a thin man hence his Weeping Clown form being real at one point in time. The issue I have with him is that there's some parts worth calling out to give credence to the hunter Clown being real as well, but also parts as mentioned above where it seems to be implied to also be a hallucination. I thought these details were worth calling out regardless. There is however a peculiar segment in Mike's diary he specifically remarks that his face is the same as he remembers it. This detail is interesting because it calls out 'his face', which we know is the face of Sergei that Weeping clown stole in a fit of revenge after killing Sergei. It is possible that Mike mistook him for Sergei after his 'metamorphosis' into him. In the same passage, Mike also comments "Ugh, their deformed bodies used to bring people joy. Why are they so scary now? I don't want to think about it anymore!" which can also be an additional indication that the 'clown' in his game is already the hunter we have now. This however could also just be an off hand comment about how they act now, it is difficult to tell. With the above mention of Margaretha hallucinating him as Sergei, that also doesn't completely remove the idea that he isn't the clown we see now. Margaretha continued to stay in touch with Joker after Hullabaloo burned down, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say that him undergoing this slow transformation into someone who could essentially replace Sergei for her is out of the question either. She would still recognize him as Joker despite this physical transformation, but would only hallucinate that he actually was Sergei under the influence of drugs. Either way, it is a little vague but I still felt it was all worth bringing up.
So... yeah that's basically my thoughts about the lore regarding identity swaps right now. Technically both of these theories can coexist, but it would feel a little inconsistent if both existed at once. It's a bit troubling though because Luchino is such a clear outlier of the initial 'character perception hallucinations' theme. We don't have anything about a character imagining him as evil reptilian, and even less about his second game, plus with the game outright stating that supernatural events exist it doesn't seem entirely not plausible that Lizard Luchino never existed. I'd love to hear everyones thoughts about this tbh! I don't see many people discussing it since it always gets washed into 'well it's an unreliable narrator deal so we can't expect to know everything' or 'well netease is just bad at writing lore' because we do have a lot of pieces in place that mesh well together, I think it's just a matter of putting the pieces together and figuring out what is and isn't real.
Bonus content: based on my theories, here's a list of characters I think will and won't get identity swaps. Will be interesting to be proven very wrong in the future. How current identity swaps work, usually a character needs to have probable malice for someone to imagine them as a hunter or be looked at with enough reverence in the eyes of a character for them to imagine them as a survivor, or in reality probable reason to imagine that they were once a real normal human and not a monster, or has the potential to BECOME a real monster.
EDIT: this list is a complete aside and not the focal point of the post whatsoever. It is also not entirely accurate!

2024.05.13 18:05 So_be Having an issue why my X and Y values on a Scatter Plot Graph. When I apply the data in my Column Z to the X axis, excel chooses to use the Row Number as the X axis data instead.

You can see in the attached image below highlighted in the red boxes the data is organized by date with the newest on the left (lowest row numbers) to the oldest at the right (highest row numbers) In the red circle you can see the data has ignored the 8.47% that should be assigned to the X axis and inserted the number 939.
Both X and Y data is formatted as a Percentage and the data is not entered as text. However, in this chart the X axis data is calculated by a formula and the Y axis data is hard coded.
I will post further information in the comments.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

This week we are celebrating u/musicalharmonica
Musicalharmonica has been around these parts for a fair few years now and has treated us with many a delightful tale in that time. But rather than just me rabbiting on this week, here’s what the nominator had to say:
I stumbled across one of their recent stories today, and have been going back reading through several years of contributions, which are uniformly excellent. They've written fun 90s pastiche and love stories that touch on social injustice -- and that's from the last week alone. Their prose is as uniformly clean as their styles are varied, and really showcases the creativity this community can facilitate.
And having looked through their back catalogue to make this post, I have to say I agree with their nominator. You can find more of their work on their profile and I definitely recommend you give some of it a read.

We are going to create a MS Excel Solver of chemical equiibrium constants of COMBUSTION reactions in consideration of NOx formation. Also, these equilibrium constants will be plotted automatically in a graph as a function of temperature, so it will be shown if the combustion reaction is favored. May I know what formula we are going to use to solve the chemical equilibrium with respect to temperature? Our available database is Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook.

2024.05.13 10:49 GuardianBug What campaigns / modules are on your ‘must run’ list?

I love reading campaign modules. Some are so stunning I immediately find myself imagining how I would run the sessions.
What’s on your ‘must run’ list and why does it excite you?
My list: - Red hand of Doom. A 3,5e module I’m currently reading (it’s great). The PC’s have a few weeks to try to stop an advancing army that they can’t possibly defeat themselves. I never thought something like this could be shaped into a campaign. The consequences are strong in this campaign and there’s a real strategy / underdog feeling. Module is excellent quality as well. Can’t wait!

2024.05.13 08:41 Thoughtful_Tortoise Making Changes to the Show (Spoilers)

I have been thinking about how the show could be improved without much rewriting, and I think that the seasons would be better off like this:
1-4: Same. If I were to make any changes it would be for Season 3 to start with Laguerta and Batista earlier, it feels like they've barely been together when they start having problems, and Angel's romance from S3 goes nowhere.
6: I would place Season 6 directly after Season 4. If Dexter was ever going to fall into religion, it would be in the aftermath of Rita's death. They toy with Deb finding out about Dexter in S5 then kick that can down the road by a year, I would rather she found out a little earlier. I also think the Lumen love interest comes too soon after Rita's death. A lucklaster antagonist isn't such a big deal here, as the real enemy of the Season should be Dexter's grief.
5: Placing Season 5 here is because of the Lumen plot, as mentioned, but also because I think if Dexter was ever going to win Deborah over to his side as an ally, then the Jordan Chase gang would be an excellent way to do it. I could see her helping Dexter and Lumen, reluctantly, from the inside.
7: I would make this the final season of conventional Dexter, and have Dexter go on the run at the end following some confrontation that results in Deborah and Laguerta's death. I didn't like this ending in the original run, but it's the only way we get New Blood. At least Laguerta as a final villain makes sense.

New Blood: Give us 2 seasons, and have Quinn be obsessed with finding Dexter (not much screentime, just a reason for his character to exist... he'd blame Dex for Deb's death and still be convinced he's alive, years later). This could give us a reason to check in with Miami Metro from time to time.
Aside from that I'd keep the Season as it is but change the ending to make it less rushed. Have the final season be a trial or jail season with Dexter coming to terms with what he's done, talking to Harrison, haunted by various ghosts, maybe even trying to kill someone within prison (unrealistic but he killed someone in an airport and smuggled the body out, so that ship has sailed some time ago). Let him see his old colleagues give testimony against him in court (Angel, Quinn, even Masuka). Give us the confrontation with Angel they teased. Matthews could admit to Dex that he knew what was going on, but can't help by this point.
End with lethal injection. "Tonight's the night" (can't take credit for that, I read the idea in another post here and loved it).

What do you think? I believe that even just small changes could have made a huge improvement to the second half of the show (admittedly I suggest some larger ones too), but I'm curious if you all agree with what I propose, or whether you'd change some or all of it.

  9. "The future of all men relies on the Guardian of Maarihk. Will his Sight be true? Or will his impure Firstblood prove the ruin of us all?"
  10. Natharr is Guardian of Maarihk, one of a long line of protectors dating back to the Firstborn Age, before the Aa Conquest. Natharr's is an ancient role, rooted in his Firstblood, giving him Sight to see what is yet to be. He adheres to his sacred duties even in the centuries since the Firstborn were forced to the brink of extinction by the Aa. Natharr still stands guard over all men, Aa or Firstborn, Seeing what will come to pass, deciding what is unavoidable and what is not. He spends decades planning how to save the life of the newborn Crown Prince Vikari so he may one day reclaim the throne of the land where Mankind was created, back in the time when the Olde Gods still walked.
  11. • "I've been won over by Crown Prince! The world is deeply conceived. The prose is well crafted. The solemn, almost-inhuman Guardian/seer standing guard during a deadly siege as the young queen gives birth makes for a hell of a great start! That weightiness to his character was a key point of interest to me that comes across right from the opening pages, plunging right into the thick of it for a wonderful change of pace. Crown Prince is intriguing, grand, strange, and shadowed by ill-omens. It is Shakespearean." — Tom Mock, author of The Long Nights • "A very good book ... [and] a very great read! Natharr is very much tested as he strives to save the life of newborn Crown Prince Vikari. This book reads wonderfully, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know the story. It is full of pulse-pounding adventure and also features great, extensive world-building! Definitely a recommend from me!” — Philip Chase, Ph.D., medievalist and author of The Way of Edan • 5/5 Stars — "Author W.D. Kilpack III presents an atmospheric and immersive journey into a richly crafted fantasy world, balancing a strong character-led adventure with a wider web of plots, setting up a highly complex and enjoyable fantasy saga to follow. There’s a clear flair for character, dialogue, and attitude from the start, with Natharr's intense presence affecting all who encounter him and making for some really dynamic clashes. The weightiness of his responsibilities and the depth of the world-building immediately gripped my attention and, as the story unfolded, the way the characters’ attitudes and actions were shaped by the realism of the worldbuilding was totally compelling. This book delivers on every promise of pulse-pounding adventure — thanks to the swift pacing of the plot, coupled with dark storytelling, strong descriptive skills, and captivating character development that balances emotion with duty well. Overall, I would certainly recommend Crown Prince as an incredible opener to an exciting new fantasy series, and I’m all the more eager to continue exploring this fantastical realm." — K.C. Finn, USA Today best-selling author of The Book of Shade for Reader's Favorite • 5/5 Stars — "The literary creator in his act of creationism. Such is W. D. Kilpack III in his intriguing invention of Crown Prince: Book One of New Blood. Intermingling real world matters of both realm and state, and legendary phenomena of ancient times, Kilpack builds a mythical epic of worlds within worlds, all suspended in time and universal fantastical realism. He has crafted an imaginative tale perfect for lovers of mysticism, magic, ancient battles, romance, and supernatural fantasy. Natharr, the Guardian of Maarihk, is one of the Firstbborn [with] abilities like the gift of prophetic Sight, and he [is] charged with protecting and preparing the newly born prince of the realm, Vikari, until he is ready to take his rightful place as heir to his father’s throne. Set in a richly imagined and described enigmatic world, the story explores themes of family, love, friendship, destiny, time, and power. Adventure and action keep the reader quickly turning the pages ... deliver[ing] a strong narrative of structure, character development, and world building, which smoothly paves the way for the next book in the series, Order Of Light, which I cannot wait to read. Crown Prince is a masterful example of original storytelling, a phenomenal literary creation!" — K.L. Davidson, author of Ten Thousand Fields (British Columbia, Canada) • 4/4 Stars — "Crown Prince stands out with amazing descriptions, complex characters, and intriguing supernatural elements. Book one in the New Blood [Saga], the storyline is incredibly promising. The author has a flair for setting the scene and creating memorable characters. I absolutely loved the descriptive prowess of this author, the thing I enjoyed most about the book ... W. D. Kilpack III genuinely takes the time to help us immerse in the fantasy world, no matter if he describes a battle scene, a peaceful moment, or a mythological creature like a Hamadryad or a Manticore, he always manages to conjure the best images in our minds. The author does a great job of incorporating the supernatural elements in a general atmosphere of myth and legend ... there was nothing I disliked about this novel. I am rating Crown Prince 4 out of 4 stars ... fans of sword-and-sorcery fantasy will definitely find this novel a delightful read ... the series has the potential to acquire epic dimensions ... I am looking forward to reading the sequel, Order of Light."OnlineBookClub.org • 5/5 Stars — "I absolutely love Crown Prince! It is a very dark epic-fantasy story following a very intimate cast of characters. The way things unfold, you’re thrown into the thick of the action right from the beginning that sinks you in right. The way events unfold to the way characters come together, you cannot help but keep flipping the pages. By the end, I was so invested, I felt so intimate with these characters, that I had to find out what happens next, so I immediately ordered book two, Order of Light! It’s such a good story! It’s such a dark-but-good story, with very good character work, you get really close with these characters, and you can’t help but want to know what happens next!" — Usman, host of Bards and Books YouTube channel (British Columbia, Canada) • 5/5 Stars — With the maps and appendix, "the characters' names, titles, and the names of fascinating places all conjured up by the mind of W. D. Kilpack III [helped] me better understand the intricate facets of this novel. Creating worlds and characters is not a easy, but the author did an excellent job. Crown Prince has everything you want: intertwining sword scenes, the battles of a war, kings, queens, knights, magic, fairies, love, sex, great beasts, and unthinkable dangers thatNatharr has to endure. Kilpack puts you in the middle as Vikari starts to grow and learn. So does Natharr for he begins to love the child as his own. Kilpack's ability to crystally describe a scene [was] like I was taking part in a meal or a sword fight. Crown Prince flowed smoothly and any fan of fantasy will rejoice [and] if you have never read a fantasy novel (like me), this one will get you hooked into the genre." — Jose F. Nodar, author of Books, Pens & Larceny (South Wales, Australia) • 5/5 Stars — "Crown Prince is one of the most brilliant fantasy novels that I have ever had the pleasure of reading and a book I am now obsessed with! Crown Prince is an incredible, thrilling and memorable story that will take its readers on a journey like no other. Crown Prince captivated me from the first page thanks to the book's sharp literature and strong opening ... [the author] is not only a phenomenal writer for his flawless ability to capture his reader's attention, but he is also a great writer for his descriptive powers and characterization of characters which will hook his readers! Crown Prince is a sensational, thrilling and addictive story that will thrill you as well as entertain you." — RedHeadedBookLover.com • 5/5 Butterflies — "Crown Prince was such a delight to read! Normally, we don't see the child growing up ... or really get a chance to get attached to whoever raised him. This author took that trope, shook it up and turned it into something amazing! We get to see the heir as a baby, to see him grow up [and] develop that close bond a son has with his father. It's a really beautiful thing ... normally glazed over in this type of story ... but you get to see how strong their bond is. I'm so grateful! Something else I really enjoyed is how well Darshelle and Natharr played off each other. Often, they have deep conversations that involve a culture clash, where they may not agree with each other's perspective, but they are willing to try to understand. I [also] loved this author's world building, especially the magic forest and all the interesting creatures that live in it! The village of the cat-people was such a fun scene and so interesting showing the cat-people society and how it was different. It was really fun! If you don't grab yourself a copy of Crown Prince, you're doing yourself a huge disservice! It's a wonderful story and such a fun read!" — Madam Crystal Butterfly • 5/5 Stars — "Kilpack delivers a stunning blow to the belief that Indie-Fantasy is worth any less that its salt. Crown Prince is a well-crafted epic with unique plot mechanisms, well-developed and believable characters, and a world grounded in the visceral and the real. I could not recommend this series any higher!" — Clay Vermulm, co-host of Sinister Soup Podcast • 5/5 Stars — "A fantastic world of swords and magic! A very strong start to the series! W.D. Kilpack III does know how to draw a reader into a world of swords and magic. I found myself unable to put the book down, diving deeper into the fantastic world. I can say, that I am a fan of his work and will soon be reading Order of Light, the second book from the New Blood [Saga]." — BooksShelf.com • 5/5 Stars — Crown Prince is "a great mix of fantasy and action and adventure! It kept me on my toes the whole time and I was completely hooked! The world building in this book is amazing. I could read 20 books in this world. The fight scenes and characters are amazing. They pull you in so deeply ... that I didn't want to stop reading way past when I should have!" — Jay.Rae.Reads • 5/5 Stars — Crown Prince illustrates "the burden of knowledge and the responsibilities involved in being able to see the future. Natharr is a great hero: think Aragorn/Alanon/Teddy Roosevelt. He bears the burden of being Guardian of Maarihk with dignity but, at the same time, is human and has flaws, like having a bit of a temper. Darshelle is conflicted and a walking contradiction, being proud and strong, while still insecure and flawed. I love the world, where magic is more subtle, while there is another element that reminded me of Greek mythology, because the gods are real and took direct action in history. There is some violence, which seems to fit well within the framework of this world where epic fantasy and realism are intertwined." — Critic, Salt Lake City, UT • 5/5 Stars — Crown Prince is "a fantastic tale filled with all things beautiful, dark, and magical! Filled with adventure and drama! The author's world is absolutely stunning, and I can't wait to read the next installment in the story!" — Cherumanalil (Bangalore, India) • 4/4 Stars — Crown Prince is "an adventure full of thrilling moments [that] hook you right from page one. Each page has a new secret to unfold. This book made a mark on my mind and now I cam curious to read the other books in the series. I loved reading it and have rated it four stars. Books like these deserve the hype!" — Read With Emilee • 5/5 Stars — "From the start you are drawn into a world of fantasy. With each page, you want more. The author gives the feel you are the character fighting for your life and those you defend. A great read, with the power to keep you from putting it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in something new, with a twist and feel of a classic fantasy!" — Tom Carr, author of Talking to Yourself in the Dark • 4/4 Stars — Crown Prince is "an absolutely brilliant fantasy read ... [Kilpack created] a master introduction. The plot building was incredible. The journey sucks you in so much that you immediately want to carry on with the series. I'll definitely complete this series." — Twilight Reader (Wales) • 4/4 Stars — "If you're looking for something new with a a twist of classic fantasy, this is for you. It amazes me that someone can create an entire world from scratch with everything that this involes. Character building is wonderful and the descriptions of what happens are good. It is very detailed, so you get immersed in the story. Lots of things happen in this book. [Crown Prince] is a good and strong start for a new series!" — June.Reads (London, England) • 4/4 Stars — Crown Prince is "a lovely fantasy. Great read! Great characters! Writing style amazing! I loved this world. A new author I discovered and hope to read more from this author in the future!" — Rhianny DD Morris (South Wales, Australia) • 4.7/5 Stars — Crown Prince "transported me into a world where life-and-death situations were commonplace and everyone had a cause to fight for! The distinction between the Firstborn and the Aa was fascinating [and] really got me hooked! The characters are fantastic, descriptions of battles draw in you and there's a shock in every chapter! I love fantasy books and I'll add this to my pile of highly recommended sagas!" — Books with Gina (England) • 4.5/5 Stars — Crown Prince is like "watching a movie. The author has narrated ... in a very fluent and visual way. It is an adventurous and twisted novel that will always keep the reader wanting more. Every page is a new unfolding and a new mystery. The plot is exquisite and emphasizes important values like willpower, determination, and truth. A captivating read [especially] those in search of something abnormally smart!" — Reads.Nancy • 4.5/5 Stars — "Crown Prince is one of the most fantastic fantasy books that I have read so far! The book is a blend of thrills, mystery, fun, excitement, and drama! It has got everything that a good book should have. The plot is unpredictable and twisted. So much is happening all at once, but the smooth narration takes care of it all." — Just Pratibha (India) • 4/5 Stars — "A fantastic read! What a grand story in Crown Prince. I am very impressed with the writing and storytelling. Kilpack does a great job of building a world filled with princes, pasts that dictate the future. Kilpack details the scenes, filled with action, and brings the creatures to life! Crown Prince is filled with swords and sorcery, magic, myths and legends, that really bring it as believable. This author is a great storyteller. The story brings the reader on a superb journey. Who could ask for more when it's filled with magical/fantastical creatures and other interesting beings?" — Amy's Bookshelf • "Once I got into [Crown Prince], I struggled to put it down! The world Kilpack has created is so detailed and imaginative you can't help but be drawn in. This book is a fantasy that give you war, knights, romance and hidden dangers. It covers it all! As the first in the series, it sets the scene brilliantly ... I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy books and fairytales!" — Kat Books Teas Cakes (UK) • "I had the pleasure of reading Crown Prince and Kilpack — he makes maps, folks! — emphasizes detail. The characters are living real lives, even though it's a fantasy. It was well done! He built his world with great care and precision." — Ken Weene, Ph.D., co-host of the Let's Talk It Over videocast

  9. "The future of Mankind relies on the Guardian of Maarihk. Can a mysterious Order help him repair the damage of choosing happiness over duty?"
  10. Despite the Guardian of Maarihk being condemned as anathema, and his very existence relegated to legend, Natharr resumes his ancient responsibilities as Mankind's protector. He joins with a mysterious Firstborn companion, Ellis the Elder, to journey into the snowy reaches of Biraald, where his Sight promises he will find those who secretly adhere to the ways of the Olde Gods. Although Biraaldi bloodlines show their Firstborn heritage more clearly than even in Maarihk itself, the two nations have never enjoyed peace. It has been far worse since the rise of Brandt the Usurper to Maarihk's throne. Natharr and Ellis must navigate threats not only against the Firstborn, but the Maarihkish, as they seek out the sympathizers he Saw who are brave enough to resist Maarihk's tyranny. Only then can the damage be repaired from when Natharr chose personal happiness with Darshelle and the young crown prince over his weighty responsibilities as Guardian of Maarihk.
  11. • 5/5 Stars — "W. D. Kilpack III's Crown Prince captivated me. His vivid descriptions plunged me into a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and emotions. I devoured the first book in the New Blood Saga, desperate to see where the tale would lead. So, it was with bated breath that I cracked open Order of Light, the series' second instalment. Kilpack doesn't disappoint. The themes that resonated in Crown Prince deepen and twist in Order of Light. He has a way of making words just flow vividly on the page. On page 106 of my Australian paperback version, a revelation about Natharr, the Guardian of Maarihk, floored me! His journey of self-discovery weaves flawlessly with the Crown Prince's own remarkable growth. New fantastical creatures emerge from Kilpack's boundless imagination. The Quiet One and Bu, meticulously detailed in all their wonder, are testament to his storytelling prowess. But fear not, I won't spoil the magic! Suffice it to say, fans of epic fantasy, your search is over. Kilpack is your new literary lord. From exhilarating battle sequences to poignant moments of reflection, Order of Light is a masterpiece. If I could, I’d give it a six! Both it and Crown Prince deserve a place on your bookshelf. Trust me, you won't regret immersing yourself in Kilpack's world." — Jose F. Nodar, author of Books, Pens & Larceny (South Wales, Australia) • 5/5 Stars — "What an incredible story! A brilliant followup to an amazing first book. One of the most well-written and well-developed stories I have ever come across. Kilpack III is a fabulous book. It is magical and captivating. I was immersed in the story from the beginning till the end. The characters and the plot were both so well-written that [it] made me feel I was with them. A wonderful novel that I enjoyed 100% and recommend to all. " — BooksShelf.com • 5/5 StarsOrder of Light is "just as good [as Crown Prince], just as quick-paced. Kilpack has an amazing ability to storytell. That's an amazing quality that makes you want to read one more page, one more chapter. This lovely book has events and descriptions that make the reader become invested in the characters and, thus, the story. I can't wait for the next book!" — Clairey Reads (Coventry, England) • 5/5 Stars — "A great followup to Crown Prince [which was] one of the most fantastic fantasy books that I have read so far! New characters are introduced and I'm impressed by his storytelling ... from characterization to event building ... everything is lucid. I'm eagerly waiting for book three." — Just Pratibha (India) • 4/5 Stars — "W.D. Kilpack does it again with Order of Light. Following on from the fantastic Crown Prince, we get to find out more about Ellis and Natharr as they go on their quest to find the sympathisers they need to get the Prince back on the throne. In a supposedly sleepy village is where they find the people they are looking for, who have been under the careful watch of the garrison for years. However, behind closed doors, there is a different story to tell and Natharr has to work out how they can use this to their advantage. A great fantasy book with all the world-building you'd expect from this author. Getting more back story and introducing different, important characters and how they've been affected gives you even more insight into where this story is heading. I really enjoyed this book!" — Books with Gina (England) • 3/4 StarsOrder of Light's "best part is vivid description. Each character is outlined with distinct traits ... these details bring them to life, making them more realistic and relatable. I recommend this series to those who love fantasy novels, especially ones with medieval elements." — OnlineBookClub.org • 4/5 Stars — "The author writes beautifully, with swaths of description and rhetoric, prose equal to the stories intricacies. Although Fantasy is not my favorite genre, I really enjoyed Order of Light! If Fantasy is your thing, then you will be in your element!" — Daisy Hollands (Shropshire, England)

It's astounding how these kind of movies are the ones that get the green light these days from major motion pictures, but hey, I ain't complaining! This nice little romp is just what the world needed to wash the taste of all those reboots and sequels with thousands of pencil pushers changing a fun picture into something it is not. That is EXACTLY why I said it's astounding that it got the green light. It would not spoil anything to tell you what this movie is about because it basically tells you going into it, even in the trailers, which some people took exception to. In this case, I do not think that is the case. A team of six mercenaries with their own separate abilities kidnap a 12 year-old ballerina and are tasked with watching her for 24 hours, then they will be paid a $50 million ransom. Sounds simple, right? Well, not if the 12 year-old ballerina is a centuries-old vampire! What ensues is a cat and mouse game covering a mansion that twists and turns more than the plot even attempts to do. You see, in movies like this, you are always facing an uphill battle because the story and characters are what are deemed paramount. Or universal. I should say “universal” because they are the ones that distributed it. You could say that this movie suffers from that, but I don't think so because once you realize what kind of movie this is, it really does not take anything away from it. The characters are not very rich or deep, but they solve that in the very beginning of the script when it is revealed that the six mercenaries do not know each other, so back stories are not really important. They are all just greedy. Problem solved! Once this movie gets going about halfway in, it really is held together with a lot of fun in ways the 5 most interesting characters make this whole thing work. The dialogue is drab, but poignant, sometimes hilarious. The acting is sub-par, but that is not why one would sit down and watch this. The special effects and gore are top notch though, so once that kicks in, you won't even know where the time went. Radio Silence Productions initially started writing the film almost immediately after the SAG-AFTRA strike in April 2023, then casted and started filming almost immediately afterwards. The excellent director duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, as well as screenwriter Guy Busick, that all had worked on Ready or Not and the new Scream movies to great acclaim. With a budget of $28 million against a box office of $35.6 million, it would be a huge stretch to call this one a success, but I have a feeling this one will have some legs in the horror, cult classic circles for a long time. The final words in the film are a simple “What the fuck?” Yes. What the fuck, indeed, movie. What the fuck, indeed.
