Hello, everybody! I'm here with my story about an ongoing series of ransom emails I've been receiving. I'm not scared as they are obviously fake, I'm more between entertained and curious.
Let's start from the beginning. I received an email having the low-effort password I use for non-important sites as a subject. The body is a copypasta in German, only having my password, my email address, the amount to pay and the address where to send the money as the customized parts, written in bold. The text, for whoever is curious enough to analyze this absurd story in depth, is the "Hallo, mein perverser Freund" one.
To summarize the content, this self-declared Big Brother or the All-Seeing Eye ("Big Brother oder das alles sehende Auge nennen") claims to have installed an unspecified trojan on an unspecified device of mine, and with that they recorded me pleasuring myself to highly controversial videos using the webcam. They ask for €1200 in Bitcoins with a 48h deadline to stop them from sending those videos to all my email contacts as well as uploading them online.
What's ludicrous about that, aside from how generic the claim is in order to be a little credible for any victim, is they claims they gained access to all my devices by hacking one. In my case, that's even more comedic as my laptop has a killswitch for the webcam (meaning it always had a black piece of plastic obscuring it, since I never use it), while my phone is an Asus Zenfone 6, which has no front camera (the rear camera flips over when you need one). They have been really unlucky with me. Also, How can they film what I've supposedly been watching while engaging in self eroticism with my front camera?
Other criticalities are: I have no contact in my email account, nor in any application I use it with. That's not how people use emails in 2024, unless it is a business account. Plus, they claim the password they displayed as the mail's subject is my email account password. No, it is not. It is just the zero-effort password I used on some websites that have been breached (eg Linux Mint Forums and the defunct Linux Forums among the others) back in 2018-2020 (they sure took their sweet time to decrypt an all-lowercase 10 letter password).
Also, they say they sent the mail form a temporary account. They did not. They used a regular hotmail account, which has been pwned too (the poor sap, which has the misfortune of having a physical address linked to his email address on a google-able website, used the same password for his email and a website that suffered a data breach). They say, judging from my conversations, people think I'm a decent person. I have no human conversations in my email. Just notices of new replies on forums etc.
To get to the title of my post, let's skip to 3 days later (oops, more than 48h). I received another email. This time in English. This time, apparently from my own address (I suppose it is to show they really have access to my email account), even if it doesn't show in my "Sent" folder (if they want to convince me they have access to my account, they shouldn't delete it from there, I think). They say they approved "a new payment schedule" for some random practice number never mentioned before. This time, they talk about Pegasus. I'm honored to know they used a spyware that costs millions of dollars for each license, and that the DEA refused to use because of its high price, on me. Luckily for me, either they are a different party, or they lowered their price. This time, they ask for $850 dollars. I suppose they don't know much about leverage.
Anyway, I opened the email's header. They were lazy enough to modify the "from" field, but not the "return-path" one. What puzzled me? This field appears to be an administrative address belonging to a private-owned Peruvian online university. I have to admit I don't know much about informatics, and I can't tell if that grants the fact that was the true sender behind the fake self-sent email. But the hypothesis alone has me in stitches. Please help me uncover this mystery.

I'm a second-year undergraduate student getting ready to apply to Summer 2025 internships in the fields of IT, Information Security, and Cybersecurity.
A thing I have not listed in was a 4000-word analytical essay I did back in high school regarding Elliptic Curve Cryptography and Bitcoin transactions. Not sure where I could include it in or if it is relevant at all.

TL;DR: Umdoll tried to impersonate Una from Mydollection, then backtracked when the actual Mydollection posted about it and is trying to act like the naming was just a coincidence. And a bunch of other weird suspicious shit. So don't trust them, and do a chargeback through your bank ASAP if you have done any business with them.
Some of you may already know of the site Mydollection. There is definitely a discussion to be had about them, but I want to focus on Umdoll in this post and will only get into the relevant parts about Mydollection:
Mydollection has changed hands a few times. I don't fully know their whole timeline, but it's relevant that you know they are currenly ran by Una.
Compounding their problems, one of their employees (possibly Una?) was in a car accident a few months ago and sustained an injury to their hand or wrist. They posted about it with pictures, though they are gone now because they share a lot of their information through Insta stories that don't last very long.
Mydollection doesn't have any presence on Facebook. Most of their communication is through Instagram, emails and a chat widget on their website that has been removed. Although one of the previous owners was from Malaysia, the new owner may be from China as they said that's the reason they don't have a Facebook.

A few weeks ago, somebody by the name of "Megan Mydollection" appeared on FB and started advertising for the site "mydollection.shop" and the socials linked with it, which are FB, insta, tiktok and potentially a Twitter, although that button on their website doesn't work. The actual Mydollection posted on their Insta saying that they have no idea who this person is, they aren't linked to them at all and to please not do any business with them.
At this point, the fake dollection was communicating with an email called "uma.dollection" and the blog posts on their website were posted by a "Wang Una", although that has now been changed to "Chen Jacky." They also changed the url to just "umdoll.com."
I don't know what all their social names were previously, but their two FBs are "Bjd doll" (URL dollectionshop) and "Umdoll" (@dollections), their insta is "@dollectionshop" and their TikTok is still the old URL, "mydollection.shop", although the bio has the new URL of "umdoll.com" and an email for "jacky.dollections@hotmail(.)com."
That email address brings me onto the email they sent out, which is how I found out about them initially. I and many others recieved a plaintext email from 'Chen Jacky', "jacky.umdoll@hotmail(.)com" that acted as ad for Umdoll's site. Strangely, I wasn't actually in the 'to' box of the email, but somebody that I don't recognize (probably just another random person from the mailing list, like me) and nobody else. It seems like apart from this one person, the entirety of the mailing list was BCC'd and CC'd in the email was a "megan.umdoll@gmail(.)com."
I had never heard of Umdoll before this and neither had a lot of the other people in the BJD Discord I'm in. All we can surmise is that Umdoll had access to an outdated mailing list from Mydollection, since the only thing we had in common is that we had all spoken to Mydollection via email at some point. It's not that rare for information to be leaked online, especially when you're dealing with smaller vendors, so do with that what you will, I am not smart enough to analyze how they got that list of people.
The site itself is standard, but shallow and obviously quite new. The 'about us' tab has some AI generated art, which sort of goes against their "we love independent and local artists" thing, as does the fact that they were actually advertising a known recaster on their FB at some point. The language on the website is quite different to what was in the email and personally gives me huge ChatGPT vibes. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially if the person writing it doesn't speak English fluently, but it doesn't look great in this context when compared with everything else.
Also, their FB says that they're from California, when their actual website says that they're from Guangzhou, China. It's probably related to China's banning of FB so I think anybody using a VPN in China to access FB would have to put in a fake location. I thought I should give some context for that.

I saw Umdoll advertising on FB myself for the first time and left a comment basically saying "stay away from these guys", they responded saying that they had no idea who mydollection was prior to starting their own pages and that it was a mistake. I responded with some more info and they deleted the post. (Or blocked me. It's an invite only group so I can't just log out to see which.)
Aside from the name Una popping up and then disappearing once they were called out, Umdoll literally reposted the actual post from Mydollection about the car crash and then deleted it.
I think that Mydollection has a lot of stuff going on right now, so it's probably best to hold off on ordering from them for those reasons, until they sort themselves out. At the same time, you should ABSOLUTELY not order from Umdoll, because... all of this.
Maybe somebody was looking for "smaller" BJD sellers to impersonate and didn't realize that Mydollection was already under such heavy scrutiny. Maybe it's more malicious and targeted. I'm not sure, I just wanted to post this somewhere in the hopes that people would see and maybe tell their friends. I'll be looking into the bigger BJD groups on FB and seeing if they allow 'call out' posts or will at least ban Umdoll and give a heads up.
(Not only do scammers suck anyway, but them trying to impersonate Mydollection when so many people are frustrated/angry with them and possibly struggling to get in contact with them, I think it's especially important that people know which accounts are/aren't real.)

Hi, I'm 17 years old and recently I've started applying for jobs anywhere I'm qualified for. I live in Washington DC and i have been looking for part-time work as I'm still in High School. I've done over 150 applications within the past month on indeed, most of the employers have ghosted me. I've applied for most fast food chains, retail stores, and grocery stores on their direct job sites and these employers have also never responded back to me. I've only been selected to go to 4 interviews and 3 of them never responded back to me. I know that's how it usually goes at the beginning. My job searching is limited as i have zero work experience, i haven't done any volunteer work either. During the summer i was enrolled in a program with peers my age, but that was something i would not consider work. I really want to get a job so i can have my own money and become financially independent. So my question is is there anthing i can do to speed up the process of getting hired? Am I missing any steps? Hi Reddit! My grandpa died 5 years ago due to old age, and with that, my grandma has expanded her "dating space." The problem is, they are all scams. We live in the Philippines. Some people here usually try to date a foreigner (AFAM, as we call it) because of money, clout, etc. Some of the people here have spouses or partners who are from the United States. Now, ordinarily, there is nothing wrong with that, but the issue is that the suitors she met online turned out to be scam artists. This happened when the pandemic started, when everyone was on their phones doomscrolling, and my grandma scrolled a lot until she stumbled upon Facebook dating. Ever since she discovered the app, she hasn't stopped. For example, when I was trying to sleep, she couldn't stop talking to her "lover" on her phone with her broken English (probably due to timezones). Even using my laptop (which I use for school) when she wanted to chat with them (yes, they are multiple)... She even had the guts to show our house to her talkmate via video call on WhatsApp. All her suitors have a similar story: either they are a seaman, a firefighter, a doctor, or do any blue- or white-collar job, but even though they have those highly paid jobs, they still ask for some money. I mean, it's her choice to spend her money on whatever she wants since it's her hard-earned money, but knowing that she gives out money for people to deceive her more is heartbreaking as a granddaughter. I don't know, and I don't want to know, how much she spends on her dating scams, since I don't want to be a total snoop. These scams also talk you out into giving your information to them and can possibly hack you with this. There are a lot of times where my grandmother will come to me and tell me about another problem in her phone; it's either her pictures got deleted, her Facebook account is signed out, her Gmail account is signed out, or another ad pops up in her phone. But there is a story that truly broke my heart, and it solidifies my hatred of scams... and love in general. I was the "tech savvy" in our family. During my study session, my grandma called me to go downstairs and write an email for her. It was a letter of paid leave in order for her lover to leave the country and visit my grandma in the Philippines. She was even requesting how much the pay is and how she will send the money, whatever she can, just to help her lover out. In those words, she let me type... "As his soon-to-be wife or his fiance." As I was typing that, it broke me. She has this on-going relationship, and she didn't tell anyone in the family? Has she betrayed her longtime marriage? I was typing it out. I looked at the email, and it is a Hotmail account. From the United Nations. I thought to myself, "An official multi-country organization, using hotmail?". She said to keep it a secret from my parents or anyone else. But I can't help it. I told my mother about this, and she fully agreed with my grandma. This is like how our conversation went: ME: "Ma, I can't help it; if she is falling for those scams, it might cause a domino effect. Next thing you know, we are out of money because of these scams." MOM: "Well, she can't help it either; she is at her old age. If that's her hobby, then go for it, as long as she isn't hurting you." ME: "I know, but there are a lot of Facebook groups for her that are suitable for her. Let her have zumba classes, let her join a baking class, let her join anything! As long as it doesn't keep her in danger." MOM: "She is at the house all day; she is bored; at this age, she is just enjoying life." ME: "You can enjoy life without giving money to other people!" Yadda, yadda, yadda, or something along those lines. It came to the point where she had to go to the airport via taxi (the airport is not near where we live) and wait for her lover to come to the Philippines. Morning to midnight. She waited for her prince to arrive, but it was midnight, and he hadn't arrived. My aunt just told us that she arrived at 3 a.m. that night. Hearing this, my father had enough of it, so he held a "family meeting" with me, my grandma, auntie, and my mother. Everyone knew that she had a "lover" from across the States, but she still continues to deny it. We just advise her to stop it, deleting all contact with them. A few months have passed, and she is at it again. It was during my study session again, and she called out my name, telling me that her WhatsApp data was gone. Even my father is stunned that she uses WhatsApp, as the majority messaging app we use is Messenger. Back to the story: I tried my best to fix the issue, but nothing. I talked to my mother about this, and it's just like the conversation we had last time. "She's too old; let her live!" I want to educate her about this because I love her and I want her to be protected. But considering the norms of the Philippines, if I even try to teach her something, it is considered disrespectful because the elderly are wise or some bullcrap. I can't accept the fact that she has fallen for this again. I want her to have fun while she's safe from anyone. So, here's where I need your help, Reddit. Should I confront her about it directly? I worry that she'll just brush off my concerns or, worse, get defensive and shut me out. But at the same time, I can't stand there and ignore her and continue to be taken advantage of. What advice can you give me? Any insight or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
TL;DR: Grandma's been repeatedly scammed in online "relationships" since Grandpa passed away. Despite warnings, she doesn't care, even planning for a scammer to visit from overseas. The family's attempts to intervene met with resistance.

Edit2- on advice from gwarser I unchecked the ruleset... and now things are not back to normal but at least the second filter is visible for just long enough to click it if you are fast. Otherwise I have to hover over uM and reload until I can do it.
EDIT- I checked option and in Assets " Ruleset recipes for English websites " has the red broken chain link and will not update. I removed and reinstalled it and that is still the same. Ditto purge and Update Now.
So I use a hotmail account. I usually only have to allow two items through uM. One to get the login form to show and one at the end that appears then, to see the emails.
Starting yesterday after noon it has given me a lot of trouble. I have had to allow two items through uM and then at the end it doesn't let me see the last one I have to allow. I figured out how to get around it. I have to hover with the cursor on uM and keep hitting the reload key until it appears for a fraction of a second after the 5th or 6th time then click. If I miss I have to keep going again until it comes back around.
My theory is MS is using AI on their mail logins now to force us to let them past our add ons. Whatever the case just reporting.

Unfortunately because my email is SO old, my back up email linked to the account was my old high schools email, which now no longer exists, so I had to take the 2nd option.
Here comes the tricky part. I grew up in Ireland and Scotland, spent 50% of my time in either country. The security questions are Where was this account set up (I can’t remember if 11 year old me picked Ireland or U.K.)
The other security question is name of childhood best friend. I know the answer to this. However it is an Irish name, so I’m not sure if I spelt her name the English way, or the Irish way with the special markings on the letters (eg. á)
Anyways, I have tried all options and they won’t work. And of course my account has now been Blocked.

So, recently my old email alias being on hotmail.com has been changed due to multiple hacker signing even through mobile with 2 verification. I used to be hacked on both phone and mobile. Long story short, I had to make a new alias yet keep the email. The email that got hacked is no longer available to make nor use nor receive or send. My roblox account is associated with the hotmail account. I am attempting to recover it and change it to my new alias. I have created about 3 tickets each talking to staff and then cutting me off once sending them proof. I have proof from Microsoft Support Team, through online chat that once an email is gone and its alias has been changed, you no longer receive anything to that account nor create an email with that name. I sent many proofs of the account like the date of creation, the password of the account, the email that i cant access anymore and i even sent them pictures of verification of the account and attempts of logging in using my Ip address which is the same on the picture and my laptop. I really need help, because that account contains the only memorial of my brother which died from cancer and is my only method at least remembering him. He used to play roblox and was a big fan. Does anyone know a method or a way i can at least gain the attention of the roblox staff to change the email address from their side?

Hi Guys, 2 Weeks ago my Instagram account was compromised and hacker had posted a post for bitcoin giveaway and set the same as story, it was midnight i was sleeping and my friend call me and notified me that my account was hacked, it was like 10 minutes after the post that i found, then i immediately taken the action and changed my password and removed the account access from hacker. The hacker not deleted any thing or sent message to someone only followed some accounts. I thought this is not serious issue, so I didn't change my other social account passwords. Note : I Have already 2FA connected with that Instagram account.
On the Next Eve, I received the mail from LinkedIn that your profile photo was changed, hacker got access to my account and he had deleted all data from my profile, he had deleted everything from my profile and created a new profile with his username (maybe they sold my account to someone) and sent messages to new peoples (who are not in my connection) to make connection with them. I got to know that my account was hacked (within 2 Hours of hacking) when i received a message from someone else (hacker has sent message to him for making connection). Then i checked that my all information from account was cleared i had 2FA connected with that account and my email and phone was still there. (i am from India) This was my main account as i am student and using LinkedIn for getting job.
On the same night i checked my twitter that it was hacked or not but it was still safe. I scanned my laptop and checked for malicious file but not able to find single one, even i checked my browser for extensions and removed some of them that i do not use. Next day in morning around 11 AM i got mail from twitter that my x account was suspended for Specifically, for: Violating our rules against evading suspension. When i checked my x account post then i found that hacker had posted several post from my x account that has scam links and tagged people.
But i knew that it is really hard to recover x account if it is suspended. So I didn't try anything.
I was using windows PC with chrome browser i do not install crack software i use some of them but i was using them from 2021 so it doesn't make any point, that hacking was done from them, then i found that like hacker has got my cookies and used that for login. I cleared all my cookies and history i generally do not delete my history and i was using single profile for my whole thing (work and personal use)
Today i received mail from meta that in my Facebook an email was added then my password was changed then my email was removed within 2 minutes i lost access to my account.

Although my Facebook account was not important, it had nothing but still it hurts me. This account was not connected with any 2FA and So it was easy for hacker to gain access and remove me.

NOTE : My Instagram, LinkedIn has 2FA on with my mobile number, Twitter 2FA was with google authenticator, Facebook was not connected with any 2FA. My email for Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter was same but for Instagram it was different and even my passwords are unique and strong i do not save my password in chrome (google password manager). Even my emails have 2FA. I store my passwords in google sheets (i know it's not good way to store). I don't know how i was hacked but i wanted to know how should i keep myself safe. I wanted to know what should i do now?

Hey fellow Redditors, I recently got myself a Toshiba Satellite Windows 10 Laptop, and it's throwing some odd issues my way. Firstly, the keyboard mapping is acting up – pressing "?" registers as an underscore, making things a bit confusing. Secondly, it's detecting other Wi-Fi networks, except for my own (although my Hotspot shows up).
Thirdly, attempting to switch the language to English in the control panel proves challenging as there's no English or Unitos Estadios option, and everything seems to be in Spanish. Also, when I tried to log in with my Microsoft Hotmail account in the user section, it keeps saying "invalid login," despite the credentials working fine on my other devices. Any insights on what might be causing these quirks?
