50 Songs You May Have Missed in 2022
2023.02.01 15:00 skylofte2 50 Songs You May Have Missed in 2022
After finding a ton of great new music from
u/Ghost-Quartet’s
post from 2021 and becoming a diehard Chappell Roan stan, I was inspired to make my own list of music that you might have missed in 2022. See their list for last year
here!
Disclaimer: I’ve included quite a few artists on this list that the sub knows very well. I’m not under the impression that acts like LE SSERAFIM and Orville Peck are underground by any means. There are a lot of people who don’t listen to any K-pop, country, men–whatever genre of music it may be–so you’ll see some picks were made with this in mind. In these songs, my intent is to broaden horizons with some safer, more entry-level selections.
FFO = for fans of.
Anyway, in order of release, here’s the list:
Bastille - Shut Off The Lights / from: Give Me The Future
- FFO: Years & Years, WALK THE MOON
- This single from pop rock giant Bastille may have flown under your radar–I admit I haven’t paid much attention to Bastille since I deleted my Tumblr in 2013 (though shoutout to Good Grief, which slaps). Shut Off The Lights has one of my favorite pre-choruses of 2022, and the brass instruments all over the track sound amazing. I’m reminded of my days converting Vampire Weekend and Two Door Cinema Club lyric videos to mp3 files on my iPhone 4 to listen to on the bus to school.
Jordan Stephens (feat. Miraa May) - Big Bad Mood / from: Let Me Die Inside You
- FFO: Mac Miller, Jack Harlow
- Jordan Stephens is known for being one half of British hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks, who in turn are known for their 2011 hit Down With The Trumpets. Fast-forward eleven years, and Stephens is releasing his debut album Let Me Die Inside You. This includes the highly danceable single Big Bad Mood, which is a beautiful combination of electronic and rap. The beat is utterly bumping and Miraa May’s cool voice makes a great addition to the track.
Honey Dijon (feat. Dave Giles II, Cor.Ece & Mike Dunn) - Work / from: Black Girl Magic
- FFO: Beyoncé, The Blessed Madonna
- Honey Dijon is a legend in the club scene, starting out as a DJ in the 90’s. Today, she has production credits on COZY and ALIEN SUPERSTAR to her name, as well as programming credits on CUFF IT. From her latest album Black Girl Magic, Dijon describes Work as “a celebration of [her] love of jazz that slams hard on the dancefloor.” It’s empowering, fun, and makes me want to hire Cor.Ece to emcee my day.
DRAMA - 3AM / from: Don’t Wait Up (EP)
- FFO: Amber Mark, SG Lewis
- Composed of producer Na'el Shehade and singer-songwriter Via Rosa, DRAMA’s music is a blend of genres. What’s more, their work is an entirely in-house project–they write and produce their own music and head their own record label. From DRAMA’s latest EP, 3AM is their signature late-night, R&B-meets-dance sound at its best. Smooth production and an infectious melody come together for a chorus that's hard not to sing along to (one-two, ooh, hallelujah!). Rosa’s relaxed vocals lament the complications of love in what I personally find to be just a bit too relatable.
Blow Pop - Rather Be Mad - FFO: Adele, Christina Perri
- There have been a number of new artists born out of the pandemic, but disco pop duo Blow Pop are one of my favorites. Rather Be Mad is a piano ballad breakup song, but without any feelings of vengeance or spite. Sometimes breakups can be easier when you have something to be angry about, but not this time. Rather Be Mad has a well-crafted melody and an old school sound, but it still feels fresh.
Hadiya George - Balance - FFO: Doechii, Kaytranada
- If there’s a word to describe Hadiya George, it’s smooth. Her singing and rapping glides over the upbeat, soulful instrumentals of Balance. George’s debut single Hot Flavor is also an absolute bop–I’d say she doesn’t miss, but that’s a bit misleading since she only has two songs out. Nevertheless, those two songs are excellent and worth your time.
Sevyn Streeter - Nobody / from: Drunken Wordz Sober Thoughtz (Deluxe)
- FFO: Tinashe, Doja Cat
- Sevyn Streeter has songwriting credits for Ariana Grande, Alicia Keys, Usher, and many more artists. She brings her great lyricism to Nobody, a pop/r&b track with a bouncy bassline and sultry vocals. The verses and pre-chorus are groovy as hell, and when the horns come in on the chorus, it’s just exquisite.
COBRAH (feat. CupcakKe) - GOOD PUSS (Remix) - FFO: Charli XCX, Shygirl
- Citing ballroom culture and Stockholm's fetish scene as influences, COBRAH's music has been shamelessly self-indulgent and hard-hitting since her debut in 2018. She has stated that she makes "gay workout music" and GOOD PUSS is no exception, with its sickening house beat, lustful lyrics, and an absolutely feral outro. In the 2022 remix, CupcakKe blesses the track with her brash and witty wordplay. Hitting us with the lines "the pussy popping like a balloon at a gender reveal" and "this ain't no non-profit pussy, bitch, you payin' my bills" back-to-back, she takes this song from a ten to an eleven.
Only Fire (feat. Chase Icon) - Cheeks - FFO: SOPHIE, Slayyyter
- What started out as a Twitter meme has now turned into a serious music project for Croatian producer Only Fire. Some of his song titles may seem familiar–Cruel Summer, Rain On Me, 7 Rings–but listeners are in for a surprise when they press play. In quintessential Only Fire fashion, Cheeks opens with a text-to-speech engine reciting the song’s vulgar chorus: “I love the sound of my cheeks / As they're getting clapped with dicks.” Only Fire’s robotic raunchiness can seem like a joke, but his beats are nothing to laugh at.
Leikeli47 - BITM / from: Shape Up
- FFO: Bree Runway, Tkay Maidza
- Leikeli47 is fully in her element in BITM (Bitch, I’m the Man), delivering devastating rhymes over a powerful beat. She fits six rapid-fire verses into a three minute song, including the lines ”I wear Nikes with my gowns / Just in case hoes need a lesson,” which is true to type Leikeli47.
Purple Disco Machine (feat. Agnes) - Twisted Mind / from: Exotica (Deluxe)
- FFO: Kylie Minogue, Dua Lipa
- Purple Disco Machine taps Sweden’s deep pool of talented singer-songwriters, enlisting Agnes as a featured artist on his single Twisted Mind. The song is one of three new tracks on the deluxe version of Purple Disco Machine’s 2021 album, Exotica. Twisted Mind is nu-disco to its core. Layered synths and steady drums make the song super dance-friendly, and Agnes’ singing is splendid as always.
Kah-Lo - Drag Me Out - FFO: Charli XCX, Sofi Tukker
- Drag Me Out is just plain fun. It’s about having such a good time at the club that you need to be physically removed at closing time. Kah-Lo’s signature talk-singing gives the song its distinct character as her voice flows over a thumping beat. If it feels familiar, you’ve probably heard her and British producer Riton’s hit Fake ID–you know, the “3-6-9 girls wanna drink wine” song. Kah-Lo is a rising star in Nigeria and one to watch.
MJ Nebreda - Quédate / from: Sin Pensar (EP)
- FFO: Charli XCX, Yaeji
- Sometimes a song scratches a certain itch in your brain, and Venezuelan singer-producer MJ Nebreda does just that with Quédate (“Stay”). I’m convinced the bubbly piano playing and repetitive vocal sample are laced with something because this song is absurdly addictive. Quédate mixes latin and house wonderfully and I encourage everyone to check out her debut EP Sin Pensar.
Kinky - Solo / from: Fierrro
- FFO: Ricky Martin, Scissor Sisters
- I simply don’t have the range to write a proper blurb for Mexican rock band Kinky, but here goes. Formed in 1998, Kinky infuse dance and pop elements into their alt-rock music while still maintaining a Mexican sound. There’s a chance you may be familiar with their 2006 hit song ¿A Dónde Van Los Muertos? and its repetitions of “la la la la la la la.” From their latest album Fierrro, Solo (“Alone”) is a sad but upbeat song. Lead vocalist Gil Cerezo laments how he can’t go on without his love, while his bandmates carry the song's catchy melody.
Orville Peck - Let Me Drown / from: Bronco
- FFO: The Chicks, Kacey Musgraves
- This one is for my Popheads who have a chronic fear of male vocalists with deep registers. Orville Peck is well-known around here, and Let Me Drown is certainly no deep cut, but I suspect there may be some aversion to him as a male country singer. Potential biases aside, Let Me Drown is stunning. This powerful ballad features incredible vocals and heart-wrenching lyrics. Peck’s performance coupled with the song’s dramatic instrumentals make for a beautiful and raw final product.
Whethan (feat. aldn & 8485) - COMPLICATED / from: MIDNIGHT
- FFO: Louis The Child, Flume
- This song goes hard. Melding the punk and electronic genres, it’s brash, jaded, and in-your-face. Featured artists aldn and 8485 have voices that both compliment and contrast one another, and Whethan’s production is sharp and punchy. The harsh electric guitar and drums really amp up the energy. This song was immediately sent to my gym playlist.
Paul Bender - Summer Fool / from: How To Forget
- FFO: HAIM, Anderson .Paak
- Paul Bender–better known for his work as the bassist for Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote–released Summer Fool as the lead single for his album How To Forget. Very much a breakup album, Bender uses the project to work through his feelings. Despite the melancholy subject matter, Summer Fool is a light and airy acoustic song with elements of bossa nova. Bender’s gentle guitar playing is complemented by a selection of strings, which comes to swell in the last third of the song in what feels like a cleansing.
from
RuPaul's Drag Race: Season 14 - I Hate People (Willow Pill) - FFO: MARINA, Lady Gaga
- If there’s anything on this list you should watch instead of listen to, it’s this. Winner of Season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race Willow Pill is known for her absurdist sense of humor, and her finale performance is a perfect example of why that is. Though just over a minute long, this campy song has a lot packed into it. I Hate People enjoys a tropical sound and a fun melody–think Crystal Waters–plus the over-the-top vocals you expect from a Drag Race track. If you enjoyed this (or even if you didn’t), please also watch her talent show performance from the season premiere.
LE SSERAFIM - Blue Flame / from: FEARLESS (EP)
- FFO: BLACKPINK, Dua Lipa
- If you’ve somehow managed to ignore every single K-pop release in 2022, you might not know up and coming girl group LE SSERAFIM. From their debut EP FEARLESS, Blue Flame is something I could see Dua Lipa releasing as a Future Nostalgia B-side. It has a clean sound and strong bassline, and to me feels like a divergence from your standard K-pop music production.
Chappell Roan - My Kink Is Karma - FFO: Taylor Swift, Lorde
- Chappell Roan makes music to touch the stove to. She is known for her adept songwriting and kitschy, drag-inspired aesthetic. Fresh off opening for Olivia Rodrigo’s tour and receiving a nomination for Best New Artist at the illustrious Popheads Music Awards, the singer-songwriter from Missouri had a big 2022. Roan collaborated with industry staple songwriters Dan Nigro and Justin Trantner for My Kink Is Karma. The vocals are excellent, the pre-chorus is to die for, and the production is top-notch. And if anyone has tickets to her Boston show… please DM me, I’m begging you. See also: Pink Pony Club.
Juriji Der Klee - XIXI - FFO: Lady Gaga, Charli XCX
- Drag Race España alumnae Juruji Der Klee is a woman of many talents. The trilingual trans drag artist quickly became a fan favorite during the show’s second season for her cutthroat confidence and strong aesthetic. On her single XIXI, Der Klee shows off her siren-like opera singing over a techno beat. In the refrain, she commands: “Veni vidi vici / Comeme el chichi,” which translates to “I came, I saw, I conquered / Eat my pussy.” It all comes together for a hypnotic and danceable song.
Oliver Sim (feat. Jimmy Somerville) - Hideous / from: Hideous Bastard
- FFO: Caroline Polachek, Lorde
- The xx bassist Oliver Sim delivers a hauntingly beautiful single in Hideous. Dealing with themes of fear and shame, Sim uses the song–and the album Hideous Bastard as a whole–to exorcize his guilt and remorse. He comes forward about living with HIV since age seventeen, wondering if “radical honesty might set [him] free.” Amazing vocals from both Sim and Jimmy Somerville and a wonderful incorporation of strings make this indietronica track a personal favorite this year.
Tom Aspaul - Effigy / from: Life In Plastic
- FFO: Kylie Minogue, ABBA
- We like to throw around the phrase “slept on” here on Popheads, but I swear y’all are really sleeping on Tom Aspaul. He has an acute ear for pop music, with songwriting credits for Kylie Minogue, Snakehips, and LIZ. Tom consistently delivers nu-disco excellence and doesn’t shy away from his queerness. From Life In Plastic (which he did an AMA for in May), Effigy is a trance-inspired bop. With Aspaul’s vocals and uptempo production, it builds up and comes back down beautifully. The track explodes into its final chorus and I’m transported to the crowded dance floor of a gay European discothèque.
4th Corner - Come Back Home - FFO: Donna Summer, Sylvester
- Disco quartet 4th Corner released their debut single this year, and the 6,000 streams it’s sitting at right now is criminal! Come Back Home sounds like it could have been ripped right from the 70’s. The song is complete with a call and response section, guitar solo, and an interpolation of the iconic “ooh ooh” disco chant. What more can you ask for?
mimi bay - helium cowgirl - FFO: Clairo, mxmtoon
- The voice of Sweden’s mimi bay is beautiful in this emotional, stripped-down song, accompanied by just piano keys and a woeful pedal steel guitar. The empty and atmospheric sound matches the song’s theme, as bay laments that the one she loves is “not the kind a cowgirl can tie down.”
Gia Woods - Lesbionic / from: Heartbreak Country, Vol. 2
YUKIKA - Scent - FFO: Utada Hikaru, Jessie Ware
- Japanese-born, South Korean-based singer YUKIKA is back with Scent, an upbeat and jazzy city pop bop. The song is energetic and fresh, with influences from 80’s Japan coming across quite plainly. The bright and summery synths really encapsulate YUKIKA’s signature sound. Ever since she debuted in 2019 with NEON, this lady has not missed.
Jake Wesley Rogers - Dark Bird (St. Lucia Remix) - FFO: CHVRCHES, Magdalena Bay
- St. Lucia’s remix of Jake Wesley Rogers’ Dark Bird is a blissful display of synthpop excellence. Rogers’ voice has such a power and depth to it that I was surprised to learn that he’s just 26 years old. With St. Lucia’s euphoric production, he sounds like the 80’s pop star he would have been if he were born several decades earlier. Every time the song crosses over from the bridge to the bursting final chorus, Rogers’ voice ascends as he hits that high note, and I ascend right alongside him.
DAGR (feat. Rebecca Black & LVL1) - Cafe Racer / from: Fade on Back
- FFO: Danny L Harle, Uffie
- Queer electronic duo DAGR released this “hard industrial bop” with Rebecca Black and LVL1 as a single off their album Fade on Back. If you’re familiar with any of these artists, you probably aren’t surprised by the song’s sound. It’s hyper, abrasive, sexy, danceable, and downright chaotic. I firmly believe Cafe Racer belongs in the upper echelon of gay car songs alongside Vroom Vroom and Backseat (feat. Carly Rae Jepsen).
A Taste Of Honey - Boogie Oogie Oogie (NEIL FRANCES Remix) - FFO: Donna Summer, SG Lewis
- This remix is a lot of fun. Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey is of course a disco staple, and NEIL FRANCES’s clean production puts a modern spin on it. The track has more empty space, which does a great job highlighting the original song’s vocals. It’s a groovy head bopper and an overall good time. See also: Bee Gees - More Than A Woman (SG’s Paradise Edit).
Cuco (feat. Adriel Favela & Kacey Musgraves) - Sitting In The Corner / from: Fantasy Getaway
- FFO: Omar Apollo, Kali Uchis
- This dreamy song from Mexican-American singer-songwriter Cuco mixes traditional Mexican music, bedroom pop, and soft indie rock. Cuco and Musgraves harmonize beautifully on the chorus as the song switches off between English and Spanish. Although the lyrics are of heartbreak and sadness, the song has a light and airy sound.
Moon Boots (feat. Cherry Glazerr) - Come Back Around - FFO: Disclosure, Daft Punk
- Moon Boots makes music for all the Judy Jetson hookers dropping low at the Orbit City nightclubs. On the American DJ’s latest galactic groove session, Come Back Around is equal parts house and nu-disco. The instrumentals are both fast-paced and smooth, and the song’s intermittent breaks allow you to fully appreciate the vibrant production. Cherry Glazerr’s singsong, up-and-down vocals are lush and enticing.
Cataldo (feat. Your Smith) - A Good Moment at the Wrong Time / from: Dumber and Older
- FFO: HAIM, Harry Styles
- Seattle-based band Cataldo released their album Dumber and Older in October of 2022, which included the single A Good Moment at the Wrong Time with vocal assistance from Your Smith. The song is set at a bar as it begins to close, while two people with what seems like a complicated romantic attraction linger. The song is a pop rock track with a groovy guitar and great harmonization, and the vocal delivery gives the song a lot of character.
Honey. - What Now - FFO: ABBA, Carly Rae Jepsen
- I Can't Believe It's Not ABBA! Actually though, you’d think this was ABBA on first listen. Upon further investigation, it turns out that What Now was released by Scandipop newcomers Honey. The song is a lush nu-disco track with shimmery production and wistful lyrics, and the chorus is a total earworm.
INJI - MADELINE - FFO: Charli XCX, Kim Petras
- Honestly? This song is cunt. It’s for the girls on a messy night out–full of alcohol, drugs, and bad decisions. It’s about grungy clubbing, arguing with and attempting to bribe the bouncer, dragging your friend away from her ex, and desperately trying to corral your friends into a goddamn Uber. INJI’s blasé singing is super fun, like this isn’t the first or last time she’s up to no good. The electronic dance beat is fierce and I can’t get enough of the chorus and refrain. Now Madeline, let’s roll! See also: GASLIGHT.
Little Dragon (feat. Stefan Sandberg) - Peace / from: Opening The Door (EP)
- FFO: The xx, Kelela
- In what sounds like it could be from a video game OST, Little Dragon incorporates woodwinds, cowbells, ululations, and more into this fun and atmospheric track. If we were in a universe where Nintendo takes a sudden interest in Swedish electronic music, I see this song playing in Mario Odyssey as Mario hops around a colorful jungle, or in Breath of the Wild as Link explores the remote settlement of a shy but playful water-dwelling species.
Mura Masa (feat. LEILAH) - prada (i like it) / from: demon time
- FFO: Flume, Cashmere Cat
- Mura Masa’s latest album demon time was full of hits, and prada (i like it) is a standout. LEILAH delivers great vocals and the production sounds very y2k. The hook provides excellent buildup, and I don’t know what Mura Masa did on his synthesizer to get that chorus, but it’s ridiculously catchy. prada (i like it) is so good that I think I might even be willing to look past demon time’s album art.
Shaolin Cowboy - Yeh Yeh Yeh / from: A Story Of Innocence Lost (EP)
- FFO: Disclosure, Kaytranada
- If you enjoyed the elevator music bangers that Disclosure released in 2018–including Ultimatum and Moonlight–then you’ll like Shaolin Cowboy. Yeh Yeh Yeh is a deep house track that has a marked jazzy sound. Without any real lyrics, the song is great to just vibe to. If you like this one, you may be interested in All Night All Summer, which heavily samples Lush Life by Zara Larsson.
jaboukie - BBC - FFO: Azealia Banks, Shygirl
- You may know Jaboukie Young-White from his time as a correspondent on The Daily Show or his multiple iconic Twitter suspensions. I certainly didn’t expect to see him venturing into the music industry, nor did I expect him to release such a fire song. BBC (an acronym for bad bitch coochie) takes notes from Azealia Banks and CupcakKe, with jaboukie delivering hilarious and fast-paced bars accompanied by a surplus of confidence.
Isabella Lovestory (feat. Chucky73) - Hit / from: Amor Hardcore
- FFO: Rosalía, Bad Bunny
- At risk of sounding redundant, this song is a hit. Isabella Lovestory always brings it with the production, and her punchy rap-singing flows over the track beautifully. Chucky73’s feature also adds a lot of character to the song. Hit is powered by reggaeton’s signature dembow rhythm and makes for an excellent example of Lovestory’s perreo-pop sound.
SixSaidIt - Spring Break / from: Outside II
- FFO: Bree Runway, Doechii
- October saw the release of the follow-up to SixSaidIt’s debut album, Outside, and the return of her slick storytelling chops. Spring Break is a through-composed track, meaning the song isn’t divided into chorus and verses. It’s simply two minutes of SixSaidIt rhythmically retelling the story of her 2016 spring break over a groovy beat. She details the antics she and her friends got up to, ultimately concluding that she’s just glad no one ended up in jail. Spring Break is a fun and nostalgic song that brings back a lot of college memories, good and bad. See also: Little Bit.
Michael Medrano - DISCO SLEAZE - FFO: Dua Lipa, Mabel
- Disco pop newcomer Michael Medrano has absolutely been doing it for me since I found him earlier in 2022. He has an excellent ear for songwriting, an angelic voice, great production skills, and perhaps most importantly, an impeccable gay cowboy aesthetic. DISCO SLEAZE is a total banger with a thumping bass that’s made just for the debauchery-filled nightclubs that Medrano describes in the song’s lyrics.
Hope Tala - Stayed at the Party - FFO: Kali Uchis, Madison Beer
- Stayed at the Party is a lot like Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves for me. The similarity doesn’t necessarily lie in sound, but in that the song feels like a warm, comforting hug. The gentle vocals, soft acoustics and beautiful melody are just magnificent. And there’s something about the chorus that makes me feel so nostalgic: “So I'll just stay at the party / Dance till my feet hurt / Tell all my friends I love them for no reason.”
Devon Cole - Hey Cowboy - FFO: Olivia Rodrigo, Wet Leg
- I’ve become absolutely obsessed with Toronto’s Devon Cole even since she popped up on my Cowboy Mix playlist. Hey Cowboy is a flirty and playful bop with funky guitar playing and a strong bass line. Of the track, Cole says: "Hey Cowboy is a song where I’m embracing my sexuality (and my affection for cowboys).” The song’s accompanying music video is a gay cowboy pool party that somehow makes this song even more fun than it already is.
STR4TA (feat. Emma-Jean Thackray) - Lazy Days / from: STR4TASFEAR
- FFO: Clean Bandit, Disclosure
- Wii Sports Resort theme, but make it club! Lazy Days is another elevator music banger, this time from British electronic duo STR4TA. It’s a jazz funk song with rapid, near-manic piano playing. Between Emma-Jean Thackray’s singing and the overall crisp production, this track is as lively as it is carefree.
Olivia Knox - Deserve It / from: Smoke Signal
- FFO: Sigrid, Katy Perry
- Olivia Knox says self-care! Deserve It is a positive song about treating yourself and knowing it’s what you’ve earned. It’s lighthearted and upbeat, featuring a chipper piano tune and a subtle yet thumping bass. Olivia Knox released both her debut single GORGEOUS and her debut album Smoke Signal in 2022–consider listening if you have 23 minutes to spare!
Barry Can’t Swim - Like The Old Days - FFO: Disclosure, SG Lewis
- Completing this list’s trilogy of elevator music bangers is Barry Can’t Swim. The London-based producer says Like The Old Days “always felt like a track close to home.” His intent comes through quite clearly, as the song is overflowing with nostalgia. Electronic meets jazz for a cheery and danceable sound alongside bright instrumentals and a wistful vocal sample. See also: Jazz Club After Hours.
Holiday87 (feat. Syd Silvair) - Weatherman - FFO: BROODS, SG Lewis
- Holiday87 is the solo project of Benjamin Ruttner, known as one half of electronic duo The Knocks. Weatherman doesn’t necessarily have a lot going on sonically speaking, but it doesn’t need it. Syd Silvair’s silky voice and sparse piano keys are a constant throughout the track, as Ruttner’s masterful production comes and goes in the form of various percussions and synths. Everything comes together to give the song a cool, serene, and mystical feel.
from
The White Lotus: Season 2 - Renaissance (Main Title Theme) (Extended) - FFO: Crystal Castles, Avicii
- I was going to do a write-up for the theme song from the second season of The White Lotus, but Danielle Cohen from The Cut has already summed it up perfectly: “It has no words. Its genre is neither classical music nor EDM, but also both of those. Its vocals, if we can call them that, sound like yodelers deep in the throes of an acid trip. It starts slow, with a misleadingly placid piano melody, and then builds gradually into an intoxicating frenzy of operatic discothèque music.”
Oleg Miami - Давай уедем далеко - FFO: Bon Iver, Lucy Dacus
- I don’t know what the fuck she’s saying but girl I am living! Russian singer Oleg Miami dropped this single in 2022’s eleventh hour, which I can perhaps best describe as an uptempo Bon Iver pop song. According to my Ukrainian coworker, Давай уедем далеко translates to “Let’s go far away.” I don’t speak Russian, but you don’t need to know the language to enjoy the smooth guitar strums and Miami’s relaxed voice.

Ahh its utada birthday. It's hard to believe she is 37 years old. I found out about her when she first released distance. I clearly remember sleeping with the album on repeat on my cheap mp3 player and waking up to it being dead then pissed cuz I have to walk to school without listening to it. Ah good times. I even met my first love thank to me and her fav song being travelling. Thanks utada for all the memories. Cant wait to see what the new decade has in store but I know I'll keep your music with me thru it all.

2016.08.13 22:29 Kaoskitteh New and Forgetful User Tips
This will be outdated once the site functionality is updated New to Dojin.co? Missing some key details? Been away for a while and can't remember it all? That's fine. The way things work isn't spelled out for you, but hopefully we can fill in the blanks. Keep in mind that these are not official rules, just things that most of us users have picked up on over time.
If I missed something, I'm wrong about something, or something has changed, let me know. I'll try to keep this updated. If something is important and pressing, please email me at Kaoskitteh@yahoo.com . -<
Registration>-
- With the new contribution system, every user will need to have a registered account if they want to make a download. Registering is simple enough that we shouldn't have to spell it out, but if you can't seem to find the link, tap the "Login" button in the top right of the page. If you have issues, contact chromaticRed at their Twitter.
- If you made a mistake, or things have changed, you can edit your account information by going to http://dojin.co/registe while logged in. This will not let you change your username, unfortunately.
- If the site is "under lockdown" (This may occur if major changes are being made), then that means the creation of new accounts will be unavailable without an invitation code from an existing user. If you want to bring a friend to the site during this time, navigate to http://dojin.co/invite/ while logged in to your account, and send them the displayed link. It's only active for a couple of days, but that should be more than enough time.
-<
Navigation>-
- You'll be greeted by the login screen, followed by your user information and recent announcements. We'll display your account name and wallet, and any important news pertaining to Dojin.co.
- Scrolling up will bring you to the "Recent Comments" and "Recent Edits". With this section, there are arrow buttons on the left and right of the screen. Using these will bring you through recent album comments in chronological order.
- Scrolling down will bring you to the music section, where you'll find pretty much everything you've ever needed in life. ( ;3 ) There are four tabs here by default: "50 Newest", "Charts" (changes with events, like Comic Market), "Bookmarked", and "History". All of these are self-explanatory for the most part.
- If you're looking for something specific, we do have a search function. Simply typing at any time while using the site will bring up the search menu, along with ways to narrow down what you're looking for. Alternatively, you can press the "Search" button overlayed across the top of the screen. As you type, suggestions will display below for you to select. These selections include artists and genres that we have in our database. You can select multiple items in one search if you want to get detailed. We don't display album names in suggestions, so you'll have to just search for those plain. When you're done searching, simply press the "Cancel Search" button in the top right.
-<
Albums>-
- Each album displays its' cover art, artists, and genres, as well as a tally of comments and up-votes. Hovering over an album will display the album's title, a button for sampling the music (if available) and a download button, as well as up-vote and down-vote options if you have previously downloaded the album. Right-clicking an album anywhere will bookmark it for your account, which will then be displayed in the "Bookmarked" tab. Clicking on the text of the album will select it, allowing you to browse and edit information, copy direct links to the album as seen on our site, and make comments about the album itself.
- While commenting, you can "Promote" an album. This will bring it back from the dead and display it on the front page as if it were recently uploaded, showing it to all users. To do this, you must type a comment with at least 125 characters, then select the "Promote" option before submitting your comment.
-<
Contribution Points>-
- We aren't a charity, and we don't allow for completely free downloads (anymore). If you want to use the site, you'll need to contribute to the community. Uploading a new album will net your account 15 points, and donating $1 will net you 90 points (Minimum donation of $5, meaning a minimum of 450 points per donation). Each download will cost you 1 point, so choose wisely. Our rates are pretty fair, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting what you want.
-<
Uploading Albums>-
- If you need a few extra points, or want to share a few awesome tunes, uploading an album is more than recommended. Just make sure your upload is:
Independently Made (Steer clear of record labels, for the most part)
Japanese (or heavily Japanese-Inspired. That's part of what makes it Doujin)
Music (Avoid Voice Drama albums, unless music is included in them)
MP3 Format (If another format, label as so in the "Notes" section of the "Edit" tab. Please try to use MP3 though, as other formats may be replaced or deleted)
128kbps Quality or Higher (preferably higher)
Properly Formatted (Make sure we can extract the download from its' archive, and that things are titled with proper information)
Not already on Dojin.co
- Exceptions can always be made, but try to stick with the style of music we have here. If you upload Utada Hikaru or Marcus D, we have a problem (I love them, but they don't belong here).
- If your album meets these guidelines, click on the "Add Album" button in your user information, or on the top right of the screen. This will bring you over to a separate page with a simple sheet to fill out. While typing your title, the site will show albums with similar names that have been uploaded. If you see your album in there, that means we probably already have it. When you type genres and artists, similarly titled genres and artists that are already in our database will display below. Select them to make sure they all get shown together when searched for. If the artist or genre isn't in our database, type it fully and press enter. It will be displayed as new.
- When uploading an album by an artist that uses both Japanese and English names (or only Japanese), please label them in “名 (Name)” format. The English should be translated for group names, and romanized for individual names. If the artist is already in our database but is not in the proper format, let a moderator know and they will fix it promptly (Moderators can change names in bulk, meaning that artists with 10+ albums can all be fixed at once).
- For the download itself, upload it in a zipped format (.RAR is our most common, for which you can use WinRAR). Don't upload the archive password-protected, as it's entirely unnecessary, and tends to cause problems. We prefer MEGA links, but Mediafire, VK, and anything that doesn't ask for an Ad.fly or download timer will do. Bandcamp links work as well, so long as the album in question can be downloaded for free from the site, but please make an upload yourself. If the download is a hassle, poses a risk, or is a Bandcamp link, it'll likely be replaced by someone who's willing to properly upload it.
- Samples are now necessary for all uploads. If any of the music from the album can be found online available for listening (typically through Youtube, Soundcloud, or an MP3 link), then be sure to add that to your upload. If you can't find it, put forth some effort and upload something yourself. We want to know what we're signing up for when we make a download, and with the new point system that'll be even more important.
- Make sure you fill in all information when uploading, use genres and artists as spelled on our site if similar work has been previously uploaded, and please please PLEASE add cover art. We tend to have less issues with image uploads if you add the file directly from your computer, so keep that in mind. If you don't upload cover art, only a moderator can fix it, and that's not something they appreciate. Add in the fact that your album may face deletion if it goes without cover art for too long, and that makes for a poor situation.
-<
Broken Albums>-
- Download links aren't permanent. When they stop working (for whatever reason), we consider the link to be broken. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing this until someone tries to use the link. If you happen upon an album that isn't downloading anymore, head into the "Edit" tab of the album and tap "Report Broken". Slide the confirmation button and the album will be displayed as broken (With a request to fix it for anyone able and willing).
- If you happen to own an album that's displayed as broken on our site, please: Help everyone out. Put all relevant files into a zip folder, title it accordingly, and upload it somewhere easy to get to (See the "Uploading Albums" section above). Once you have the download prepared (and set for public use), paste it into the "Download Link" section of the "Edit" tab, and make sure you delete the original link. You won't be credited, but people will be grateful. That's what counts, right? ( :3 )
- If you come across an album that doesn't have a sample, it would be awesome if you could add one in for us. If you find an album that doesn't have a cover, find an image link for it and throw it into the comments of the album. A moderator will get to it at some point or another.
-<
Sharing>-
- Want to send some particular downloads to a friend? Want to show off a collection of favorites? There's an app for that! If you use the "Sharebox" option in the top right of the screen, you'll be able to make a collection of albums that can be shared as a unique link to the Dojin.co website. For example:
http://dojin.co/c/?a=27459,7142,7139,10403,10406,10409,10413,10416,41736,35461,18883,18877,18874,18880
I have always loved jazz. If you want some excellent doujin jazz, check these out.
- Just find the albums you want to add to the Sharebox and drag them to the right side of the screen. Once you're done, get your link by clicking on the button. This will add it to your clipboard, which can then be pasted wherever. Know that your Sharebox is bound to your account, so you can only have one that is editable at a time.
- If you only want to share one album in particular, skip the Sharebox. Go into the information of the album you want, then check the "Get Link" tab. Our site link to that exact album is displayed there for your use. Just don't go showing it off to the world.
-<
Policies and Moderators>-
- There are some things that only a user with elevated access can do on the site. This includes editing and deleting comments, deleting albums, and changing cover art (along with fixing details in the backend of the site). Moderators are also expected to keep things orderly in general. Some policies under current moderation are as follows:
No FLAC even in comments. The admin has requested this directly.
No Blatantly NSFW Cover Art. Most things are fine, but if the artwork shows gore in detail or shows a bit too much to be seen around others, try to find a censored version. You can get a feel for this by looking around at other uploads.
Keep Discussions Civil. Don't throw insults, don't retaliate to insults, and behave yourselves in discussion. There's no definitive line for this, but comments will be deleted if it gets out of hand. I know this is the internet and all, but don't make others uncomfortable or angry. We're all (or at least mostly) adults, so be mature.
Stay On Topic In Comments. Reviewing, recommending, and complimenting albums is fine, but don't go off on a tangent and stray off topic. If you want to continue such a discussion, please move it to the General tab.
- The current moderator is Kaoskitteh, and can be contacted at Kaoskitteh , or at Kaoskitteh@yahoo.com. They don't like to displease people, so they'll always listen if there's a problem.
- The current co-moderator is Nagas, and can be contacted in General Discussion. They are far more knowledgeable on the subject of doujin music than Kaoskitteh, so keep that in mind.
-<
Tips>-
- Need help with something? Let me know at @Kaoskitteh on the dojin.co board, through a PM, or through any other medium. If they're called Kaoskitteh, they're probably me. I'll always help, even if you're just looking for some suggestions on other sites to use, good albums to listen to, or anything else. - I don't offer emotional support, but I won't deny it either.
- If you upload an album and the cover art doesn't work, upload it again (This time with a direct upload of the image file), then let a moderator know about it. They'll delete the malfunctioning copy (It's easier on them this way in general).
- Think wisely before you comment. Users cannot edit or delete their own comments, so if you make an ass of yourself (or just make a mistake somewhere), it's permanent until a moderator removes it.
- If you upload an album, be sure to test your link as it appears in your upload in a private browsing session ("Incognito Browsing" in Chrome, "Private Browsing" in Firefox, Safari, and Opera, and "InPrivate Browsing" in Internet Explorer). Doing this in a private window ensures that none of your login information for the upload site interferes with your test. Be sure to look for blank spaces in your link, as those will interfere with things. It wouldn't do if you uploaded an album and no one could get to it.
- When uploading Youtube sample links, don't use the shortlink versions (youtu.be). A shortlink will redirect the user to the Youtube site, while a full link will activate our in-site video player. Credit to Miria for this tip.
- Don't go overboard with genre tagging. The less cluttered things are, the better.
- If you come across an upload that is of poor quality (improper file format, low bitrate, bad download site, etcetera), and you have a better version, then by all means: Fix it. We want everyone to be satisfied with their music, and having people willing to keep quality consistent will most certainly help. Credit to Hekyo for bringing this to mind.
- Looking for the best of the best on Dojin.co? Pull up the search menu, leave the search bar empty, and enable sorting by either Votes or Downloads. Searching this way will show you what people like the most around here.
- If you like an album, give it an up-vote. It's a sign to others that this album could be worth their time.
- If you love an album, promote it. Not liberally, of course, but if everything about it was amazing and you think more people need to hear it, shove it in our faces.
- Be nice. Be helpful. People like people who are nice and helpful :)
- And most of all: Enjoy your time with Dojin.co
