2024.06.09 09:59 scarchelli Should I just pay this or call?

So I initially filed my taxes in March, received a refund from IRS for $355. I then realized I didn’t include unemployment I received. I amended my return to include it and ending up owing $1. Last month, I received a bill from the IRS for $355. Seems they are essentially clawing back the refund.
I don’t get it. I was already taxed every time I got unemployment. Should I just pay the $355? Is this normal of them? If I ended up getting a refund of say $1200, would I have gotten a bill saying I owe $1200?

2024.06.09 08:23 crasengit Pension help - High salary but poor company pension scheme

Hi everyone, I'm a UK citizen returning after working abroad.
I received a job offer back home and was lucky enough to negotiate a salary of around £120K. Due to this I want to make sure my pension contributions are setup properly due to the loss of personal allowance meaning >60% marginal tax rates.
Unfortunately, for now my employer can only offer a statutory pension contribution of 4% between £6k and £50k, whilst I match another 4% in this £6k to £50k band.
Is there a way I can pay more myself into a SIPP etc in order to effectively salary sacrifice an additional £18k or so per year into my pension? I've already missed out on some years of contributions living abroad so it's definitely a priority!

2024.06.09 08:15 Grxffiti I wrote a literary analysis paper of Wesley's Theory for a school final

I wrote this around May 20th or so, just wanted to share
Here is my teachers feedback: "this is a great analysis of major themes and the musicality of the song...as this is about literature, you should also be discussing the literariness of the song as well."
Wesley’s Theory by Kendrick Lamar serves as the introductory track to his 2015 studio album To Pimp A Butterfly. Rateyourmusic.com claims To Pimp A Butterfly is the top album of all time for any genre. Therefore, the introductory track must have set the tone in a fine way to create the greatest, most cohesive, flawless album ever, no? Lamar and his team of producers, engineers, and writers on Wesley’s Theory do exactly this, each executing their job perfectly and coming together to form a beautiful, funky, conscious introduction describing how the United States systemically takes money from young successful Black people.
The lyrics of the song may be what a listener of Wesley’s Theory might pay the most attention to on the first play. However, the production of the song is near unmatched, as it also adds miles to Lamar’s overall concept of systemic racism. Many describe the song as “funky,” which demonstrates how Lamar chose to combine two predominantly African- American genres: hip-hop and funk. Funk originated in the midst of the United States civil rights movement and stemmed from dance music. The upbeat characteristics of the production ironically contrast with the unfortunate topics Lamar discusses. This may have been chosen to make the song more appealing to a broader audience, and ultimately expand the reach of his message in the lyrics. It might then serve as a critique of the music industry as a whole, for supporting systemic racism and selling Black pain and struggle as entertainment. Regardless, the instrumental was masterfully crafted, including a little beat switch at the three-minute mark to signify the change in voice to become Uncle Sam (will go into this more later). After Dr. Dre’s break, the beat surrounding Uncle Sam’s voice becomes more ominous and cloudy. Listeners question Uncle Sam’s motives and commands, as the production hints he may have evil intentions against the good men such as Lamar himself in the first verse.
Other than Lamar, who is performing on Wesley’s Theory? The track opens up with Boris Gardiner—a sample of his Every N***** is a Star. Upon its release in the 1970s, this song was supposed to empower Black people, so Lamar including this to set the tone of his own 2015 album portrays the persistent presence of racism almost half a century later. Chances are the sample was interpolated to introduce the bulk of the album, versus just this specific song. However, Wesley's Theory’s message is still very similar to To Pimp A Butterfly’s modern racism as a whole to really introduce the main idea of the album to the listeners.
Josef Leimberg’s quick verse after Gardiner is the first mention of the caterpillabutterfly metaphor that actually stays consistent throughout the album. Lamar and other Black people on the streets are reflected in the caterpillar. Caterpillars just consume everything they can, and in this case, pre-fame Lamar would just hustle to the highest level he could to survive by eating and buying his way through his cocoon.
Kendrick’s chorus which starts before his actual verses acts to sum up the whole song. Although it may not make sense upon first listen, it speaks upon Lamar’s complex relationship with the music industry. As stated earlier, he is conscious of music executives selling the pain of Black people as entertainment, and the chorus reflects his shift in his perception of them. He first loved the money, the fame, all aspects of a successful rising star. Later, he found out the truths behind the industry’s intentions and learned his lesson about where his efforts go.
His first verse expands on this idea, and puts the listener in Lamar’s shoes maybe 15 or 20 years ago, aspiring about his goals as a rising Black MC. He would splurge on all sorts of things, from women to cars. Ultimately, he stayed independent and never was pimped, but still the aspirations of spending all this money from his success back into garbage was clear.
There is a section in the middle of the song, shifting from Lamar’s perspective to Uncle Sam. After Dr. Dre’s voice clip, dropping financial wisdom that relates to avoiding the subsequent, Kendrick speaks as the government, going out of their way—although systemically—to take the money from Black creators. They are the ones who instill these expenditure aspirations into a young Lamar. They are the ones making it easy and normalized for such artists to splurge their earnings back into material goods. They are the ones that uphold an environment of poor education causing such people to fail economics class. And they will ultimately snipe Lamar and others if they “slip up financially,” like Wesley Snipes, identifying the meaning behind the title of the song.
Smaller details throughout the song absolutely complete and perfect Lamar’s message. When George Clinton said, “look both ways before you cross my mind,” and his vocals ran from the left ear to the right ear, it emphasizes Clinton’s message in this bridge, of acknowledging where Kendrick’s level of success resides right now, but how quick, easy, and far of a drop can occur with a slip-up. Kendrick’s mixing has a slight reverb to it too, as if there are multiple of him. Which is exactly what he is arguing, as it is a wide systemic issue that affects all sorts of Black creators, he was just lucky enough to not fall for the trap that is to get pimped out. Kendrick’s vocal inflections and slang used throughout the song also add miles toward the words he wants to emphasize and really drill in what sort of environment he grew up in.
Nearing the end of the song, a listener might believe they were just given some insight and behind the scenes information of the music industry and how Black artists are being exploited. The end of the track acts similarly to a conclusion, with George Clinton’s chanting of, “We should never gave n***** money,” intertwined and slowly transitioning with Anna Wise’s chant, “tax man comin’,” to really spotlight and protest against the cause-and-effect relationship.
In sum, Wesley’s Theory combines powerful lyrics with masterful production to critique the systemic racism and exploitation of Black artists, cementing the track’s role as a compelling introduction to Kendrick Lamar’s landmark album.

2024.06.09 05:58 Southern-Living-1038 Is there anyway out of this “contract”?

So my brother and I live in Ohio and he drives truck for autozone. Autozone paid for his CDL school. Since they paid for it, they made him sign a piece of paper that said he’d pay them back if he left before 2 years. He ended up getting a CDL job offer at another company that pays $40,000 more a year and he’d go from a 70hr work week to a 40hr. He went to hand in his notice prepared to pay half of the cost of his CDL school. CDL school in Ohio is $5,000. This is how the conversation went: Brother: hands in notice Manager: “Do you have $15,000?” Brother: “No?” Manager: “Then take this back and go to work” Brother: “I thought CDL school was only $5,000 so I would have to pay $2,500?” Manager: “yes but there’s training fees which total $26,000 so you would owe about $15,000 and if you continue with this notice, we’ll sue you, take you to court, and garnish your wages at your new job”
He talked to drivers that came there already having their CDL and they said that they have no “training fees” and can leave whenever they want.
Is there anyway out of this “contract”?
Since I can’t put a photo, here’s what the contract says:

2024.06.09 04:43 FabulousPlayGaster ULPT Request: International who will never go back to the US. Should I max out my credit cards and never pay it?

Spent some time in the US. My credit score is prestine, it's amazingly good. I have lived an honest life so far, I did everything right. Recently I got fired, my work permit is gone and I will for certain default on my student loans. I left the US as I don't have a job anymore. I don't have a lot of savings. I'm a bit hurt and resentful tbh, the system fucks you if you play by the rules. I'll be in default anyway.
I have a sizable credit card limit. I probably can spend close to 100k in my credit cards. I can buy a very very good home with this money in my home country. I can use US credit cards to buy stuff here. I'll be in default anyway. How to get the best out of it?
I'll never go back to the US. I'll never live there anymore. I may go as a tourist, but I highly doubt unpaid credit card debt affects my ability to get a tourist visa.
What if I don't pay? I can buy a liquid asset - let's say a expensive car or jewelry. Then I sell it and get the money. And never pay it back. I'll probably have to figure out some kind of trick with local IRS, but that's not too hard. I can pay taxes over this money, I don't care.
And honestly, why stop here?.I probably can get some personal loans as I have a credit score and I still can show payment slips for a few months. I probably can get up to 200k doing this. That's life changing money.
What's the worst case scenario here?

Gilgo Beach killings: How Rex Heuermann's 'manifesto' became road map for investigators
By Nicole MilleNewsday. Pasted here in case you hit a pay wall.
Suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex A. Heuermann thought he had long deleted what prosecutors called a “manifesto” on how to kill and avoid detection, a two-paged document littered with bone-chilling references to a “dump site” and burning clothes.
Under the ominous subheading of “body prep,” prosecutors said Heuermann listed “remove head and hands” and “package for transport.”
The existence of the “manifesto” was publicly disclosed Thursday as Heuermann was arraigned on two more murder counts. Prosecutors say evidence, including DNA, links Heuermann to victims Jessica Taylor, a 20-year-old sex worker and Poughkeepsie native living in Manhattan, and Sandra Costilla, a Queens resident who was 28 when she was killed and her body dumped in a field in North Sea.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney on Friday called the “planning document” a major break in the case, telling Newsday in an exclusive interview that its contents prompted a second search of Heuermann’s home in Massapequa Park and the woods in Manorville where three of the victims were found.
The Microsoft Word document, created in 2000 and typed in all caps, was a “planning document” used by Heuermann to “methodically 'blueprint' and 'plan out' his 'kills,'” prosecutors said in a bail letter as part of a superseding indictment charging Heuermann with the killings of Costilla and Taylor, bringing the number of women whom Heuermann has been charged with killing to six.
“The Gilgo Homicide Task Force members believe that the totality of circumstances surrounding the HK Planning Document, including Heuermann's attempt to delete its existence, points to it as Heuermann's self-education and 'homework' on the topic of carrying out serial, sexual murder,” prosecutors said in the bail letter.
It was last July, after Heuermann was arrested outside the Fifth Avenue office of his midtown Manhattan architectural firm and charged in the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello, that authorities found the hard drive during a two-week-long search of Heuermann's home. Heuermann was later charged with killing Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who along with Barthelemy, Waterman and Costello are known as “The Gilgo Four.”
With mountains of other potential evidence to process from the search of the home and two nearby storage facilities, authorities recovered the document, which was thought to have been deleted by Heuermann, from a hard drive found in the basement only recently — on March 7 — during a computer forensic extraction method called “file carving.”
Tierney on Thursday identified the 60-year-old former architect, who has been living in virtual isolation in the Suffolk County Jail since his arrest last July 13, as a suspect in the killing of another Gilgo Beach victim — Valerie Mack, a 24-year-old New Jersey woman who disappeared in October 2000.
The prospect of a suspect indicted on six of the killings was almost unthinkable in the years since authorities found the first remains on Dec. 11, 2010, near Gilgo Beach.
Police had been searching for Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey woman who was working as an escort and had disappeared after seeing a client in nearby Oak Beach in May 2010. In the following months, the remains of 10 people were found — eight women, one man and a female toddler. Gilbert’s remains were later found, but authorities ruled her death accidental.
Until Heuermann's arrest last year, the mystery of who killed 10 people — mostly sex workers — and dumped their bodies along Ocean Parkway had confounded federal, state and local investigators.
With the indictment of Heuermann in the killing of Costilla, who had not until recently been identified as a possible Gilgo Beach victim, the timeline of the case has broadened significantly. The other five victims were killed from 2007 to 2010, but Costilla was killed sometime in November 1993, suggesting that Heuermann began his alleged killing spree much earlier. On Friday, Tierney said there was anecdotal evidence that Costilla was engaged in sex work.
Their killings are detailed in the bail letter unveiled last week.
Two hunters discovered Costilla’s remains in a wooded area of Southampton on Nov. 20, 1993. A native of Trinidad and Tobago, she was living on Long Island and in Queens and Brooklyn before her disappearance and killing.
Costilla was found lying on her back with her arms outstretched over her head, and her shirt was pulled up over her torso and head, exposing her breasts, authorities said. Her naked legs were spread apart. She had several “sharp force” injuries to her face, torso, breasts, left thigh and vaginal area, authorities said. Three hairs were recovered from her remains — one found on her right arm, and two others from tape-lifts of two shirts that were above her head.
Those hairs were earlier tested against the DNA of convicted killer John Bittrolff, long suspected in Costilla’s killing, but he was excluded as a match.
Recent DNA testing comparing Heuermann’s mitochondrial and nuclear profiles to the hairs, could not exclude Heuermann as the provider of the hairs found on Costilla’s body.
“It is significant that two forensic laboratories have now independently determined that male hair recovered from the mutilated remains of Sandra Costilla is substantially more likely to have derived from a personal genetically identical to defendant Heuermann’s mitochondrial and nuclear profiles,” prosecutors said in the bail letter.
Further testing showed, according to prosecutors, that another of the pieces of hair found on Costilla’s remains “shares a common base at all compared positions” with a DNA sample provided by a woman who had lived with Heuermann before Costilla’s disappearance and killing. The woman, who authorities referred to only as “witness #3” in the bail letter, said she could not be excluded as the contributor of the hair found on Costilla.
That woman, whose relationship to Heuermann at the time has not been publicly shared, had been living with Heuermann since 1991 and moved out of their shared residence in September 1993 — about two months before Costilla disappeared and was killed, prosecutors said. Heuermann’s late mother had moved out of the home before the woman, prosecutors noted, without giving a time frame on the mother’s cohabitation with her son.
Prosecutors noted that Heuermann would have been living alone at the time Costilla was killed, giving him “unfettered time to executive his plans” without worrying about anyone coming home to discover a crime in progress.
That’s a theme that prosecutors have said runs through Heuermann’s alleged killing spree: Heuermann’s family was always vacationing out of state when he allegedly committed the killings. In the case of Taylor, prosecutors said, phone records and other documents indicate that Heuermann’s now-estranged wife Asa Ellerup and children were vacationing in Vermont when the young woman was killed.
Someone walking a dog found Taylor’s remains on July 26, 2003, just west of Halsey Manor Road in Manorville and called 911. Lying on her back with her legs bent beneath her, Taylor was decapitated and both of her arms had been severed below her elbows. A tattoo on Taylor’s torso had been “severely obliterated by a sharp object,” prosecutors said, adding that they believe that act, along with the dismemberment of her body, had been done by Heuermann to “inhibit” authorities from positively identifying her remains.
It wasn’t until some eight years later — on March 29, 2011 — that authorities found Taylor’s skull, hands and forearm along Ocean Parkway, just east of Gilgo Beach. Her remains were located less than a mile from where the Gilgo Four victims’ remains were discovered.
Taylor was last heard from on July 21, 2003 — five days before her partial remains were discovered. Police interviewed a witness who said on July 25, 2003, at about 10:30 p.m. they had seen a dark-colored Chevrolet pickup backed into the same wooded area where Taylor’s remains were later found.
Heuermann had owned a dark green 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup during that time, investigators have said. And it was key to Heuermann’s initial arrest.
A New York State Police investigator assigned to the Gilgo Beach Task Force, using a database that can search for vehicles by make and model, first identified Heuermann as the owner of an Avalanche and a potential suspect on March 14, 2022.
A witness in Costello’s disappearance — her West Babylon roommate — also described to police a similar vehicle being driven by a man who was seen with Costello shortly before she was last seen alive.
Costello got a call from a burner phone purportedly used by Heuermann on Sept. 1, 2010, authorities have said. A man that investigators think was Heuermann, described by the witness as appearing like an “ogre” and seeking a paid sexual liaison, came inside the house, but she and others there executed a ruse to take his money, authorities said.
A man posing as her boyfriend showed up and the client said he was only her friend and left. But that same prospective customer contacted Costello the next night and she left with him — the witness telling authorities he saw the dark-colored Chevrolet Avalanche drive away from the home. That was the last time she was seen alive, authorities said.
Police did not appear to act on the witness statements at the time in either sighting of the distinctive-looking vehicle.
After Taylor’s partial remains were found, authorities said, Heuermann searched online for a new Chevrolet Avalanche in bright blue and white and attempted to delete the search.
DNA testing, according to prosecutors, links Heurmann to Taylor’s killing. Heuermann cannot be excluded as the contributor of a male human hair that was recovered from a surgical drape found under Taylor's remains, although 99.96% of the North American population can be, the bail letter said, adding that DNA analysis conducted by two separate labs had reached similar conclusions.
Heuermann is not charged in the killing of Valerie Mack, a sex worker who went missing in 2000, but for the first time Thursday, authorities linked Heuermann to her killing, noting that an analysis of Heuermann's electronic devices revealed a significant collection of violent, bondage and torture pornography, dating to 1994.
The images showed various abuse and mutilation that prosecutors said “notably and largely coincide with how the remains of Sandra Costilla, Jessica Taylor, and Valerie Mack were discovered,” the bail letter reads.
Authorities found Heuermann’s extensive porn collection after seizing more than 350 electronic devices from his home after he was arrested last year.
The HK Planning Document was among the items that piqued prosecutors’ interest. It prompted authorities to search multiple wooded areas in the Manorville area in April, though no new remains were found.
Prosecutors have studied the document and laid out their theories of what it all means. The document lists “finger prints and gloves” and “hair & fiber” as “problems.” Prosecutors said that section of the document appears to be a guide to avoiding apprehension. A section on “supplies,” which lists tarps/drop clothes, medical gloves and saw/cutting tools, are the supplies needed to carry out the killings, prosecutors said.
In another section, Heuermann wrote, according to prosecutors, “REMOVE ID MARKS,” which they argue is consistent with Heuermann’s alleged attempt to obscure Taylor’s tattoo. The document’s “BODY PREP” section, which also notes to “REMOVE HEAD AND HANDS,” clearly relates to the condition of Taylor’s and Mack’s remains, as both victims were decapitated and dismembered at their arms below their elbows, prosecutors said.
Some of the HK Planning Document has origins in the 1996 book written by former FBI special agent and profiler John Douglas entitled “Mind Hunter,” which explored serial killer profiling, prosecutors said, specifically graphic passages on sexual torture.
When authorities searched Heuermann’s home after his arrest, they found another of Douglas’ books: “The Cases That Haunt Us.”

2024.06.09 03:41 certifiedjabroni2241 Finally gone

After a 6 month debacle with t-mobile screwing me over so hard and having to call and write letters I am finally free from this whack ass company. I was lied to and given the wrong devices for a promotion which made my bill go up over a hundred dollars. Once I mailed a letter to the executive office some executive Ken Berry was absolutely no help in trying to keep me as customer and told me I could suck it up and pay that money or return everything and not get shit back, including my phone that I had bought independently that I traded in. I returned it all to get away from tmobile asap and asked him about refunding the taxes I paid when I got the new devices and again he told me I wasn’t going to get those back which I thought was bullshit so I disputed the taxes I paid with my cc company and because I did that tmobile billed me again even after my account was closed. When I’d ask to speak to his manager he’d refuse and I asked is there no one above you and he said there is but he’ll tell you the same so I said ok well let me hear it from him to which he again denied and said if I wanted to speak to anyone else I’d have to mail another hand written letter in like bruh cmon. when I asked to hear our previous calls because he was just twisting everything he said to benefit him like saying “when I said you’d get nothing back (talking about my phones I traded in) I also meant the taxes too” he just flat out said no and nothing else and yea Ken, you can kick rocks. Thank you guys in this Reddit group that suggested I file a FCC Complaint which I did and named him in it as well. Another tmobile executive reached out to me and did read me the fine line policy that no one reads or knows exists about which basically screws over the customer and was like technically ur in the wrong but he was a nice enough person to understand how terrible this experience has been so he cleared my account of any charges and closed my account for good. World needs more Pedro Montalvos and less Ken Berrys. I have never been the type to use energy to write bad reviews or even mention someone by name but out of the MULTIPLE tmobile employees I spoke to over the course of 6 months fighting this, he was the absolute worse and the fact he is an executive who has the power to help people the most is crazy. Plus this means nothing and won’t affect him whatsoever and I’m just being a little whiny bitch so thanks for hearing me out y’all 😂

2024.06.09 02:58 MaleficentWear8398 I left America as a Trump conservative AMA(?)

I've read a lot of comments here that hate on Trump, pretty typical of Reddit mind you, and I'd like to say this post is for sharing my experience only. I don't care why you want to leave the US, if anything Trump haters leaving the US would make me more willing to move back. So, please leave, just don't come to where I'm living.
Now, about 1 year ago I moved to Japan on a study abroad with the intention of using that as a launchpad into getting a full residence work permit in Japan for a highly paying (by Japanese standards, anyway) international company. I succeeded in that endeavor as soon as I finished my study abroad, which I didn't realize was statistically exceedingly rare for someone in my situation, but it has worked for the best for me all the same.
The most difficult part for me was switching from my student status to a work permit, which involved going back for graduation from university to move the things I couldn't bring with me on my first semi-temporary move such as my giant PC, TV and sound set into my checked luggage (all of which survived ANA by the way, highly recommend that airline). After that, I had to come back to Japan on a re-entry permission, go to immigration and pick up my new residence card which wasn't possible until my undergraduate degree was officially "conferred" upon me. So I waited around until I was able to do that and successfully picked up my new residence card which activated my new visa status.
In all of this time back home I rented a storage place a block from my house pre-paid for two years for about $1250 and applied for my pistol and semi-automatic rifle permits in New York before I left. The fact that I was claiming to be a "part-time resident" definitely sussed them out, but they allowed the application because I told them if I ever move back full-time I don't want to be waiting around to take possession of my firearms in NY again. Ideally, if I were to move back at all I'd go to Arizona or someplace to own NFA guns instead, but the permit was useful regardless since I visit family there at least once annually now.
Life in Japan has been great, I got to know all of the top government, NPO, business owners and foreign lawyers in Tokyo; my home in based in Tokyo so I get to benefit from JR and Tokyo Metro's extensive railway system, work even pays for my commuter pass (I live intentionally far away from the office which extends its use case and pays for my bus commute to the station which in turn gives me access to the whole bus line) and I live not too far away from Tokyo DisneyLand being on the eastern side of Tokyo.
Everything here is still fairly cheap, I do need to buy a bike and I'm still working on converting my NYS driver's license over to a Japanese license, but I've been able to use my IDP once while I was moving my belongings over to my new apartment across Tokyo. My social life has also been fairly healthy compared to most new expats, dating is a little rough but other than that there is no lack of friends.\
So why did I leave? I had credible-enough threats of violence waged against me back home, and I didn't even recognize the place in which I've grown up in these past twenty plus years. Additionally, I like Asian culture and living in a country where I'm the minority has definitely made me the protagonist in my own little life's story, that isn't me being facetious either, so much good has happened from this move. I still do occasionally help with US-related things. I work with American commerce abroad, I visit the US military bases on special occasions in which my SOFA status friends invite me over and I volunteer for some US charities here in Japan.
Some tricky things that have arisen are the following:
-I run a business in Japan and hold multiple bank accounts worldwide including HK which has caused for a cluster fuck of a tax situation with the IRS. Unless, of course, I want to get my U.S. Passport revoked and be de facto stateless abroad (technically an Italian citizen by descent too but that process is taking forever) I have to put up with this shit.
-Renewals of my NY pistol permit aren't friendly to majority-year non-resident citizens. I lived downstate which results in me not having to just recertify with the state every 5 years for a "lifetime" license, but do a full renewal every 3 years with the local PD. This is pretty simple with a VPN and a credit card by just paying online, but I cannot upgrade to full concealed carry yet until the state rids of the training requirement or clarifies that it is only required to be done once, something neither the state nor the courts have yet done. I'm in no hurry because with the sensitive locations clause, every CCW is effectively just a glorified premises permit.
-Renewal of DL not an issue when renewing online with a credit card again, but every 15 or 20 years I need to submit a new photograph to the DMV and every 8 years since its a REAL ID I need to get my vision checked in NY.
-I apply for a lot of credit cards (over 20 at this point) to churn their SUBs which help fund me flying ANA and JAL in first and business class between JFK and HND. Sometimes, these issuers (aside from Amex) after uncooperative with me having a overseas address which means I need to phone up my parents to receive the card for me and for me to figure out how I am to use it contactlessly so I can meet minimum spend and get my next free flight home.
-I always have to say "I intend to return" on UOCAVA application forms, otherwise I can only vote in federal elections. I still voted in my local school board/budget elections when I last visited so I could write in all of the candidates and vote no on all of the budget proposals. Why would I want to give that up when I can legally say I "returned" so therefore had an intention to at some point in the course of human history? :>
-The biggest issue: my family is getting older and it's not too unlikely that my grandparents could die and I would not necessarily be able to take the time off to visit their funerals. Hopefully, this doesn't happen for quite some time.
Would I move back?
Well, no, not permanently. After I get permanent residency here I may see if I can't go work in the Midwest while on a re-entry permit for a while or look to Hong Kong/Singapore/Shenzhen/Shanghai to expand my cross-cultural lifestyle, but I have no urge to return to the US. Something people who never leave the US will say a lot is the US is the freest, greatest country in the world. I can't agree that it is the freest, but I can agree it is the greatest in the sense I can't go anywhere besides perhaps Russia, China or Afghanistan and other obscure countries to get away from the US' economic pull. Every time I go to open a bank account, brokerage account or make a big purchase or sale the US tax authorities always get involved somehow. We can seriously thank Obama for that one.
And lastly, would I ever renounce my US citizenship?
No, never. Not officially at least. If I happened to become de facto stateless as a political dissident or for tax reasons, etc. I still wouldn't give it up for Japanese nationality because Japanese nationality would cause me to lose Italian/EU nationality as well and my children could never benefit from all that comes with no immigration controls in the US for school and work in the future. If I ever needed to yeet out of Japan in the event of a national emergency like the Fukushima disaster, I would lose that ability immediately. And I would lose my US voting rights. Lastly, renunciation results in a disqualification to ever own a firearm in the US again, not sure how constitutional that remains to be.
I've heard of stories in which some Americans left for Japan, naturalized as Japanese citizens and somehow found their way back in the USA later in life as non-citizens. I know how shit the US legal immigration system is and I never want to voluntarily put myself through that where it is avoidable. The Japanese immigration system while strict and murky in some ways, is pretty understanding of individual circumstances by comparison.

2024.06.09 02:57 Shoddy-Bumblebee3672 My Depression is creeping into My Life again, please Help me w/ some VERY NEEDED Life Advice ASAP

Hey I’m (F21) going on 22, my birthdays next week. Anyways I see what people do for each other on here, and I could really use that help. I want to change my life and my career but I don’t know where to start because currently I am behind on my car payments (only 2months now but that’s a WHOLE NOTHER STORY IN ITS SELF) but I have that debt the payments are $649.99. And I barely just paid off April but the credit union says I still owe May, and Then Now June. I was fired from a crappy low budget job I worked at back in 2022. And because of filing for and then receiving EDD (the department of unemployment if you aren’t from the US) and the IRS just revised my taxes from that year and are now telling me they’re giving me a precharge and that I either owe them $2,046 . Or that I can send them proof that I don’t owe the money, and I’m thinking I might owe the money bc with EDD they had the option to withhold taxes or to not, and I chose not. And when I tell you I don’t even have 1,000 in ANY of my bank accounts. I said all of that to say I need a job, another job FAST and I’m just tired of living this life and not knowing wtf I’m doing I understand having to learn how to crawl before you walk, and run. But all of this BS is happening to me because I don’t know shit and I’m basically just learning as I go along but I’m so tired of feeling like every time I take one good step forward I get knocked back five steps. So the advice I’m looking for?: *How to budget on a salary of $500-600/wk
*What jobs are ACTUALLY HIRING and paying a Decent amount either per week/ Bi-weekly?
*legal ways to Make extra Money( currently on Feet finders.com, if anyone’s into feet, and reading this I don’t mind DMing my account name)
*where should I start with changing my life?, im first trying to pay off my debt but bc of the interest rate it feels like I’ll never catch up…
*And just over ALL general life advice for my situation
(BTW I am not at all apposed to working multiple jobs, it’s just my depression has put me in a whole where I just felt very defeated and I feel like life is hard like this to force people to unalivé themselves. But up until recently my job cut down our hrs for 40/hrs a week to 24/hrs a week. I personally feel like the extra free time let me FINALLY Rest and be able to just enjoy life again outside of always working.) Sorry if this feels all over the place, But please any and All advice is Welcome!

2024.06.09 02:39 WoahThereThatsWeird IRS letter never got delivered?

I got an email from USPS this morning that my partner was going to be receiving a letter from the IRS this afternoon. I’ve been checking all day and as of 5:35 PM, the letter has not been delivered. He does not have an online account (yet) so we don’t know what the letter is about but the anticipation has been killing me. He made $23k last year so I’m hoping it isn’t anything crazy like he owes $300. He already paid $550 in taxes when he filed in April.
I know he’ll probably have to call Monday morning but if the letter requires him to take action by a certain date, such as submit documents or pay a certain amount, will that date be postponed if the IRS has to resend the letter? Or does he get a shorter amount of time to submit everything than if the letter was delivered on time?
Update: Got the online account and I guess its just a notice removing interest and penalty for late payment for his 2023 although he paid them on time. All this anxiety for nothing!

2024.06.08 23:04 Unusual_Avocado_8983 Amended return IRS letter received

Amended return IRS letter received
Hello I recently received this letter. I believe it’s a response to my amended return for 2022 I submitted Apr 24,2024 according to where’s my amended site. There I’m on the second bar that says adjusted on May 31st and it says I’d receive a notice which I assume is this one.
I amended my 2022 return because I forgot to report a 1099-b and crypto transactions. Overall it resulted in a loss so I expect no tax or refund. This is supported by a 290 code I got “additional tax assessed” with a value of $0. However, I still don’t see my 1099-b or crypto transactions reflected in the transcripts. The only codes on my transcript for the amended return is 970/971 (amended filing and processing) and the code 290z
This letter is labeled LTR 288C and is the only one I received so far and I have some questions. Do I need to submit any forms? It gave the line about additional forms but it didn’t ask for anything specific so I’m assuming I don’t need to do anything. Second, does this letter just mean they adjusted my account per my amended return and no action is needed?
I saw other letters online regarding their amended return being accepted and the letter looked different from mine.
Any help or insight is appreciated!

2024.06.08 21:29 Derp_a_deep Medical service provider sold child's information to marketers?

A while back my very young minor child had to be transported by ambulance from one hospital to another. The doctors called and arranged the ambulance transport.
This ambulance company was quite shady while trying to collect payment. While they were negotiating with our medical insurance company they frequently called and sent letters to me demanding full payment and threatening collections. They eventually accepted their payment from the insurance company plus our nominal copay and closed the file a few months ago.
The thing is, this ambulance company is the only entity who has ever called my cell phone and asked to speak to my small child. Every time they contacted me they would do this. Their collection calls came from SE asia. I'm quite protective of my cell number and VERY protective of my children's information.
Today I got a call from a fake telemarketer pretending to represent a cable company. When I answered they addressed me as my child's name. I am 100% certain the only way they could have gotten this information is from this ambulance company and their collections department. I am not at all happy about this.
I assume selling a child's information obtained through medical records is a crime, or at least a HIPAA violation. Is there any government agency who would care? Anyone I can report this to who may take some action? Should I call the ambulance company and start asking questions about their privacy policies and who they sell information to? I want to see them held responsible for this.
Note that I posted this to legal advice and got no assistance, so I thought this community might have more answers for me. Not trying to sue or get financial gain, but this should not be allowed.

2024.06.08 21:24 LGBTQIA_Over50 My married/divorced/coupled female friends have jobs & I don't

This isn't to ask for pity. It's to generate a discussion.
Google singlism
Google matrimania
I never married and stayed childfree. I would have married, but I was always working, going to school, taking a certification, at the gym, home reading.
I've dated. I'm female and dated men. My handle is, because I am an ally.
I was raised in an abusive, alcoholic home, and had a Narcissistic father who controlled with money.
I don't tell people that because they wouldn't get the complete picture, because its complicated.
I worked in conservative industries, banking, mortgage, insurance, etc...back then (my handle didn't exist), and most people traditionally married and had children.
I just never did. I paid the price for that, again, (my generation), because THAT was expected.
I lost friends in my 20s-30s who started their own families, and I went to grad school.
I am not anti-social when you meet me. I'm not a creepy introvert, but I do cherish my alone time, and enjoy reading and learning.
I can't afford to live alone. * gasp * yes, I am in my car. I was denied healthcare access, (pre to post pandemic) and my perimenopause and menopause happened right at that time, as well as skin cancers. That's when I began to experience ageism. Employers pushed me out of jobs pretextually, because as a new employee, they didn't want me to use their medical benefits.
In the USA, they can make up any excuse that they want to terminate employment. I only began to experience the job pushouts when I entered perimenopause, around 48-49, and post whistleblowing (yes, I am a former corporate whistleblower, but that is for another post). I reported fraud, at a major employer, and, that company got fined heavily and no longer exists.
I am facing the consequences of the choices I've made. I've applied to and accepted low wage jobs, only to be pushed out, either because they realized I was overqualified, the younger boss wanted a younger workforce and I was just a "check the box" we hired someone older, (with the intention to push out, once they learned I can't afford to exist on the pay)....
My health declined.
Homeless services don't offer market rate, viable, long-term solutions for singles who don't fit their funding profiles. Once you get caught in that trap of poverty, its impossible to get out.
The women and men who helped me a long, in this very lonely journey of poverty, while existing in my car, covering my storage and car repairs, couldn't understand why a woman with my credentials and multi-industry skills is STILL homeless.
They believe the marketing brochures of nonprofit services. They fail to see that most single adults have more bills, and expenses beyond housing. In fact, when I tell people IF I had a FT job, I would only be able to allocate 20% of my pay towards housing and not the standard 30% (many people pay more), due to car costs, health, dental, vision and bills...they can't process it.
Not everyone is fit to cohabitate. I have experienced adults my age and older to be "controlling," or "needing me as their roommate-friend," so that is why I avoided roommates, since college.
Cosharing space is a big deal, no matter what. But one thing I listen to, is that most (not all) need a partner or spouse (my age and older) to keep a roof over their head.
And because I'm certainly not marketable to approach dating, or spouse searching, (let's be real, I have nothing to offer at this stage, and a man is going to want a woman who can support herself by my age)...I don't know how I can get hired and pay my debts and rebuild (realistically at my age) 50s.
Its just an awareness I have, as a never married, childfree woman.
Last week, I had a Teams interview, arranged by a woman in her 30s, who lacked the discernment about the role I applied to. (I apply to high end and low end to see what is offered and its always only the low end jobs that are live in your car incomes).
I interview, and the first thing out of the man's mouth, is, "Oh I never interviewed anyone from blah, blah, University where you graduated from, but my daughter and her husband went there...."
This man talked more, didn't ask me what I THOUGHT, KNOW, or can OFFER to support two financial advisors (probably because after seeing my age, he would assume I might want to be an advisor to earn more pay), but he made it clear that he wanted the person to STAY in that role for 2-3 years.
So, I asked, what happened to the other person who had this role. He said, "within 6 weeks, they decided they wanted to be a financial advisor instead of spending time sending out letters and making phone calls..."
The pay would have been my year 2000 earnings and for 2024, it would still render me homeless.
Hotels Due to rising homelessness, I am seeing more and more people occupying hotels. People can't afford their mortgages, apt rents are rising etc...
Wages are stagnant. This is all over the USA, not just in Illinois. Other states that have a lower cost of living, have lower pay.
I ask people who do offer me help, "do you know anyone who is hiring for professional office work?" I'm told based on my education and skills that I "should be in management, a director or running a nonprofit which pays $10,000 min a month...."
Great.Fine.Awesome. BUT I don’t have the connections to get those jobs. And the only jobs I am offered are very low wage jobs that won't cover bills, housing, car, healthcare etc...
The married women who covered my car repairs and hotels, many don't have college degrees. They took time off to raise their children, and then, jumped back into the workforce, without penalty and got into high income jobs. They talk about their spouses, their retirement, their money.
I listen. I get it.
But they can't influence anyone to give me a chance.
I'm part of a section of the population that has been impacted by the poverty and homeless industrial complex, and I can't just work my way out.
The news writes stories that pathologizes the homeless, "mentally ill or criminal or addicted."
How many people can stay hopeful, calm, and joyous, while sleeping in their cars, isolated from society? I try to stay sane by reading. I ration whatever money is given to me, for my car and storage. I don't drink, I don't smoke and I have a SNAP card.
The homeless industrial complex is BIG business, just like the prison industrial complex and military industrial complex. Its a business.
Red States that don't have a State income tax monetize off the poor and homeless and use them as a commodity for Federal funding to add to state funding budgets.
Nonprofits will hire volunteers or married women who have subsidized incomes, to start them out at $35k, $45k, and allow them to increase their earnings.
If a spouse dies, the surviving spouse gets their social security check. They can work, and then if they pick up a new partner who had his or her own income, (without marrying), she can live on the former spouse's social security, their current pay, plus new bf or gf's added wages.
I have nothing. I never comingled my income with anyone. Adults who choose to stay single, and work, and advance their knowledge, should be able to live as a single adult...
But other reddit forums often share the financial challenges that makes living in a 1BR attainable if its 30-40% of your pay. For me, due to my bills, and car, I'd have to restrict to 20% or live in my car which is wearing me down.
Women should be able to live independently and not forced to cohabitate if they want to work FT.
Thanks for letting me share my experience.

2024.06.08 20:37 Anxious_Bowl4378 SF86 Financial Questions

I’ve had a secret clearance since 2017 and I recently just had to update my SF86. No drug use, never had any accounts in collections, no foreign contacts or travel outside of the country, never missed a payment on my credit report.
I am concerned with the IRS part though. My federal withholding was off for a few years so I always had to pay back each year. (2019-2023). I currently owe 6k for 2023. I answered “No” on if i am delinquent on any federal debt because i make payments on it and have never had a lien or garnishments. I fixed my withholding so this is the last year I should be paying back taxes.
Also, when asked have you ever had an account or credit card closed i answered No. I forgot about how i had an overdrawn bank account for like $80 that was closed. Once I found out about it i immediately paid it and the bank opened me another account instantly. This was never reported to any credit bureaus and never went to collections or anything like that so I honestly forgot about it. How do you think this will affect my secret clearance?

2024.06.08 20:34 johnnypham_ I seriously need help.

I seriously need help.
So, I’ve been waiting for a verify letter to verify my tax filing for the IRS. I finally received the letter and entered in my 14 digit control number. After I verified the control number, they asked me to enter my adjusted gross income (line 11 on 1040), refund amount (line 35a on 1040), and last 4 digit of bank account listed on return.
I did all that and they said it didn’t match and to try again, I tried again and now my tax filing has been flagged for ID theft.
What should I do from here? The screen shot I attached doesn’t tell me anything.

2024.06.08 20:10 secretfinaccount Letter Requesting More Info to Process Return but Refund Already Issued

Hi, just received a 12C letter from the IRS asking for “more information to process the [2023] return” and they’ll “issue any refund due to [me] in 6 to 8 weeks.” My tax return was e-filed in April and the refund came through without any apparent issue (dollar amount matches, online transcript shows “846 refund issued”). The letter is asking for form 8995, schedule D, schedule 1 and schedule 3 because they are “incomplete or missing”. Looking at the PDF of the thing that was supposed to be e-filed all of those are on there.
Do I just send in copies of that form and schedules? Or is it worth trying to get through on the phone to figure it out? It’s perplexing to me that they don’t have that part of the efile package and that they sent the refund on the 1040 already.
When they ask for “all supporting forms or schedules, as required” they aren’t looking for copies of the sources of all the numbers, are they? I don’t need to send in the K-1s, 1099s, etc.? I don’t need to send in all the things in the tax package labeled “keep for your records” etc? Each request is “Form/Schedule is incomplete or missing from your return. Complete the form/schedule with information that supports ABC on line X of Form 1040. Also attached all supporting forms or schedules, as required.”
I understand not to file a 1040-X or send the 1040 itself, just the schedules and other requested information. Self prepared with turbo tax.
Thanks!

2024.06.08 19:28 Derp_a_deep Medical service provider sold child's information to marketers?

A while back my very young minor child had to be transported by ambulance from one hospital to another. The doctors called and arranged the ambulance transport.
This ambulance company was quite shady while trying to collect payment. While they were negotiating with our medical insurance company they frequently called and sent letters demanding payment and threatening collections.
I assume selling a child's information obtained through medical records is a crime. At least a HIPA violation. Is there any government agency who would care? Anyone I can report this to whi may take some action? Should I call the ambulance company and start asking questions about their privacy policies and who they sell information to? I want to see them held responsible for this.

2024.06.08 18:54 mooky1977 Schedule 5 question for a family member

Story time, I'll try to keep it brief.
My sister-in-law member came to Canada in 2016, worked, became a permanent resident then brought her daughter here in 2019. She is a single parent and has been legally sole custody since getting the father to approve the daughter coming to Canada required him to legally signing away custody. He did because even back in his home country they were never together as a couple, and he wasn't involved in raising his daughter so my SIL brought her daughter here with the full knowledge from Immigration Canada with a signed and notarized legal letter from the home country that he relinquishes any custody claims and has no problem with her leaving the country permanently. That was good enough for Immigration Canada when the daughter arrived in Canada.
2022 taxes get done, sent in, approved, like every other year. Then later that year in 2023 the CRA says, "amount eligible for a dependant" is under review. She figures out what the problem is, the CRA is unaware of the legal details of her daughters custody. She goes to a Canadian judge with the appropriate paperwork including the original letter from the father, it all gets signed off by the judge. She submits it to the CRA.
2024, her 2023 taxes also get flagged for the same reason as a decision from the CRA is still pending. (insert: "DAMN THE CRA IS SLOW"). In their correspondence they want her to fill out a Schedule 5.
Does anyone have any advice here, I've looked briefly at the schedule 5, and it doesn't really seem to apply to her.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT for anyone who may encounter similar in the future:
I just looked back on her tax return in the u-file software, and though it was prepared, I don't think u-file sends schedule 5 by default when it online submits as it doesn't expect her situation where the CRA f-d up on her status in the first place. Not even technically first place. Her 2021 return is fine, they don't care about that. They just flagged 2022, and now 2023, even though absolutely nothing about the custody issue changed between 2021 and 2022, or ever for that matter. The matter has been settled since the daughter arrived in country.
I just had her save the Sched 5 as a pdf and she's going to submit that separately in response to the CRA inquiry.
Still need to wait for them to fix the whole situation so this doesn't happen again in the future. CRA is such a PITA.

2024.06.08 18:45 marlian2020 New grad OBGYN offer

Hi, all! Very excited to have received an offer in my field of choice, women’s health. A letter of intent was sent over last night and there are a few things I would like to negotiate before accepting.
Here are some of the terms:
Base Salary: $118,000 per annum. You will also be eligible for additional variable productivity compensation of up to 20% of net collections, starting at 18 months of employment.*
Tentative/Floating Clinic Schedule: Monday-Friday 8 am to 5 pm, rotational Saturday shift as needed; (from 12pm to 5 pm at the X location Clinic is currently 1-2 times a month).
Benefits: Additional Annual Benefits: You will receive 10 working days of (PTO) and 5 paid days of CME benefits during your employment. Additional details will also be addressed in the full employment contract details. Employees who are vested over 24 months may be eligible for additional paid time off.
You will be permitted to participate in the following benefits, in accordance with our policies as may change from time to time, and after meeting the applicable eligibility requirements: - Medical and dental health insurance (following 60 days of employment with X, PLLC) - Life insurance benefits - Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D) - Long-Term disability benefits - Short-term disability benefits - Optional dependent enrollment for Health insurance - Optional 401k matched (3%, Safe Harbor Plan) contributions starting at 12 months of employment.
So I would definitely like to negotiate salary and PTO but my question is how high over the base salary should I shoot for especially since most times, they will counter down? And how about a sign on bonus? Is it worth asking for more PTO if the contract says I’m only eligible for more after 2 years? I’m planning on asking about malpractice, DEA and license renewals. Is there anything else I should inquire about or include in the negotiations? Anything specifically pertaining yo the rotating weekends? I did also have a $65/hr offer a while back that I turned down. Is it worth using as leverage? Any help would be appreciated, this is one of my dream specialties and I’m not very familiar with negotiations! Also, how’s the offer overall??
