2024.05.16 09:36 Kaizerguatarnatorz Chinese map of United States of America from 1849

Chinese map of United States of America from 1849
from 瀛環志略 (A Short Account of the Maritime Circuit) by Xu Jiyu in 1849.
A high ranking official in Qing China, Xu Jiyu was the governor of Fujian where he met many foreigners and missionaries and learned many information of the outside world while trying to find the reason for China's decline, he would later published "A Short Account of the Maritime Circuit".
The book was ahead of its time for depicting the world from a non sinocentric viewpoint, the author not only introduced the history and culture of other countries but also their technology and governance where he points out that the west have since surpassed China in many ways.
Xu Jiyu had expressed his admiration for democracy like those in Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as US governance and British parliamentary system, even comparing Switzerland to a utopia, as a free and peaceful land despite surrounded by warring countries.
Xu on George Washington:
"George Washington was truly a figure unlike any other. His courage in leading the rebellion surpassed that of Chen Sheng and Wu Guang, and his strategic acumen in governing a region exceeded that of Cao Cao and Liu Bei. Though he wielded a sword like Liu Bang, conquering vast territories, he did not covet titles or positions, nor did he establish hereditary succession, instead instituting an electoral system. This practice of entrusting the world to the people echoed the traditions of Yao, Shun, and Yu's era of abdication. His governance emphasized compromise, care for the people, and a lack of emphasis on military force, setting him apart from leaders in other countries. I have seen portraits of him, and his appearance and dignified demeanor surpass those of ordinary individuals. He was truly a hero among men. The United States, with its vast expanse of land, does not confer titles like kings and dukes, nor does it adhere to the norms of hereditary peerage. Instead, it entrusts the power of the state to the public, creating an unprecedented situation from ancient times to the present. How remarkable is this? Perhaps no figure in Western history can surpass Washington!"
Today the words could be found on a stone tablet in the Washington monument, donated by a group of Chinese Christians from Ningbo in 1853, which was mentioned by President Bill Clinton during a speech at Peking University, China in 1998.
Unfortunately, upon the book's release Xu was criticized by the Shidafu (scholar officials/gentlemen, an elite class in Imperial China), he was denounced as a traitor and was questioned his patriotism, the book would be banned until some time after the second Opium War.
Ironically his work would spread to Japan where it became popular which helps the Japanese to understand the world after the Meiji Restoration, Xu Jiyu was called "Galileo of the east" by the New York Times.

2024.05.16 06:59 Own_Tailor9802 Do you know a country called South Korea?

My name is Emily. I'm from the United States and I wanted to end my 20's with a bang, and I'm happy to say that I ended my 20's in Korea.Actually, Korea was not a country that I had much to do with.Originally, I was a person who was immersed in Japanese culture since college.Japanese anime became my friend. There's a lot of interesting things about Japanese anime, like the fact that they depict real places in Japan, and they depict real food, and so I fell in love with Japan, and I even traveled to Japan a couple times, and I thought that Japan was the sum of everything that I longed for.
But then, in my late 20s, I met a friend who would change my life. It was a simple meeting with a long-lost college classmate, Sarah, who had gone on to work at a large firm in New York City, and whom I had shared anime and Japanese food with in my dorm room in college. She told me honestly that she had recently traveled to Korea and was seriously thinking about moving there. Unfortunately, the large company she worked for in New York had recently gone through a business crisis, and she was laid off.
She said that she was confused by the sudden betrayal of a well-known company, and to clear her mind, she went to the airport with the intention of leaving anywhere. She thought she would go to Japan, but when she arrived at the airport, she changed her mind. When she thought back to the places and restaurants she frequented most often while working at the company in New York, she remembered that she often went to Korean streets and Korean supermarkets in New York, and she thought that going to Korea on an impromptu trip was a really good idea, so she chose to go to Korea rather than Japan, which she already knew.
And buying a plane ticket on the spot at the airport was more than twice as expensive as booking a ticket in advance, but Sarah said that she didn't care, because she was depressed after being fired from her job, and she went to the airport to leave, but the curiosity about Korea that came over her made her want to leave right away, even if she had to pay for the expensive plane ticket.
He expressed that although he went to the airport courageously, he knew that the plane ticket would be too expensive, and he thought that maybe he should just go back home again, but his curiosity about Korea came from somewhere deep inside him, and it exploded like a bomb, and he was naturally drawn to it.
Sarah, who likes emotional things like essays and poems in college and enjoys such poetic expressions, but even so, I wondered if it was a little overdone, but when she said that she had been to Korea, I became more focused on her story.
However, I was able to understand why she expressed herself in such an over-the-top way after listening to her Korean stories.
"Korea is an amazing place, the people are so kind and warm, and most of all, the employment system is very well organized. There are many programs and support for job seekers, which is very helpful for people who are in a difficult situation like me."
When Sarah started with this story, I realized that she was really traumatized by being laid off. Now, she had been through a big ordeal and was in the process of recovering from it through Korea, so I decided to focus more on her story."You said you traveled to Korea, so what else did you do?" I asked."For example, what kind of programs were there?" I asked her.
"I happened to visit a job fair in Korea," she said, "where job seekers can get free career counseling and get the training they need." "I got a lot of help there, and it gave me the strength to get back on my feet, and maybe even get a job in Korea." "And most of all, the work culture in Korea is really family-like," she said, "I was impressed by how much my coworkers cared about each other and supported each other."
Sarah said that she was curious about what Korea was like, so she visited a large convention center in Korea and participated in various fairs, one of which was a job fair, and she interviewed with several Korean companies, and the Korean companies were ready to accept her as a colleague if she applied as an American. I also learned that Korea has many companies with global reach, and they are open to foreigners with various experiences, but in Korea, unless it is a large company, people don't prefer them, so if it is a small company, they want foreigners, but there is a sad reality that no one applies.
Unlike in the U.S., where you have to report your performance every week, and if you fall short, you are threatened with termination, Korean companies are definitely not more performance-oriented than in the U.S. They value their employees and do everything together to grow together, not threaten them with termination. In the past, I knew that corporate culture in Asian countries such as Korea was more collectivistic than individualistic, and as a student, I thought that such a collectivistic culture was a bad culture with a high level of disease in Asia, but after experiencing social life in the United States, I heard that the tendency of companies to be extremely individualistic, talking about job insecurity, and treating people ruthlessly, caused me to be fired from a good job overnight, and the future plans I had planned in advance became uncertain, and I even talked about envying the Korean culture that does not have such disadvantages.
Sarah, who has never worked in Korea, but was always afraid of being fired, said that she learned a lot about Korean corporate culture by interviewing many Korean company officials.
She said that she even considered settling down and living in Korea because, besides the culture, there were so many other conveniences and benefits.
She talked about her experience of working in New York, being left alone in the office to get things done because of her performance, having to leave late at night and being afraid to go home, sleeping in the hotel next door, and having to live with the exorbitant rent in Manhattan and the two-hour round-trip commute to work, and how she realized that unlike in the U.S., where it is difficult to see a doctor, she would not have to worry about these things in Korea.
Sarah's story made me even more curious about Korea. The warmth, systematic system, and various charms that she experienced in Korea couldn't help but have a great impact on me.I've been experiencing a lot of stress every day due to the pressure of performance and the threat of being fired, and I've recently been undergoing expensive psychotherapy.I decided to learn more about Korea, and eventually decided to travel to Korea.
Of course, I didn't travel to Korea with the intention of moving to Korea or settling down in Korea, but rather to spend my last 20s in a new country, Korea, and to see a different world than the familiar Japan.
I made my preparations and headed to Korea sooner than I expected, arriving ten days before my birthday and extending my itinerary beyond what I had originally planned, staying in Korea until after my birthday and then flying back to the United States.
The first day I finally arrived in Korea, I started walking around the streets of Seoul. The first thing that greeted me was the warm spring weather in Korea. The sky was clear and the air was crisp.I was told that it is common for Asia to have very bad air quality in the spring due to the influence of China, but I didn't have to deal with that during my trip.
The streets of Korea are very different from the United States, and everything was new to me.There were many beautiful flowers in bloom, and the well-maintained trees were really beautiful. It has been a long time since the common people's neighborhoods in the United States have such beautiful landscaping because of people who destroy these trees and flowers for no reason, or secretly take them and sell them. But this was not the case in Korea. The streets were like a beautiful flower garden.
I was walking down a beautiful street lined with flowers, and I was looking at them, looking at the big big map that was displayed on the screen at the bus stop.I was just curious to see what my neighborhood looked like, so I was looking at the map and taking my time, and a middle-aged woman came up to me and said, "Where are you looking for?" She didn't speak fluent English, but I was so grateful that she was trying to help. I was too embarrassed to tell her that I was just looking at the map, so I told her one of the destinations I was planning to go to, and she gave me direct directions to the place I was looking for, and I was able to get there without any difficulty. This unexpected kindness opened my eyes to the Korean people and warmed my heart at the same time.
I was ready to accept everything in Korea with an open mind. The first impression was very good, I was touched by the kindness of the people.I couldn't ask for anything more from Korea. The food was so fresh and amazing to me.I visited Gwangjang Market, a famous traditional market in Korea.
Unlike a regular restaurant, it was a place where you could sit down and try a variety of food. As a traditional market, it was full of Korean food. There were no pizza, pasta, or burger joints, but I liked it better that way. It was a place where you could see the traditional look and feel curious about everything.
I also tasted foods such as tteokbokki sundae and hotteok.Everything else was fine, but I was a little worried when I first tried sundae because it looked so strange and a little gross, but I decided to give it a try and the moment I put it in my mouth, the rich flavor filled my mouth.Korean food often seems difficult to eat, but when you try it, you can see why it is so popular in Korea.
I stayed at Gwangjang Market for a long time and tried a lot of different foods, especially kimchi and pajeon, which I still remember because of their crispy texture and spicy flavor. I would recommend them to everyone.Experiencing the deep flavors of Korean food firsthand made me fall in love with Korean food.
And then there was a shocking thing that happened to me in Korea.I was having a lot of fun traveling around Korea and everything was interesting, because Korea is really the best place to be, you know, you're running around, you're busy, you're going from place to place, and I had the misfortune of losing my passport, which was really stupid.
I was traveling in Korea, and I got an international call. Someone was calling me from Korea, and when I saw the international call indicator on my phone and realized that the call was from Korea, I had a million questions.
I thought I shouldn't answer the call, but then I realized that it was an international call, and I thought maybe they were calling me because they had some business to take care of. I answered the call, and I was told a really crazy story, because I heard a calm English voice asking if it was Emily, and she introduced herself as a police officer and asked if I could come to the nearest police station.
I thought I had done something terribly wrong, because I had just eaten delicious tteokbokki and sundae, kimchi and pajeon, and I was so happy to eat them, and afterward I was just walking around the streets of Korea, smelling the flowers and seeing the pretty trees.
I started to check my belongings one by one and realized that my small pouch containing my passport and some of the money I had exchanged was missing.
I quickly headed to the police station, which was where I was told to go, and from the front gate, I was controlled as to what I was visiting.
The great thing about Korea is that even for someone like me who doesn't speak Korean, it's not difficult to navigate these government offices. Not all Koreans speak English, but at least the ones I've met have been able to communicate with me in a simple way. Even if they don't speak perfect sentences, they understand most of the words, so I was able to communicate the reason for my visit to the police station.
I had never been to a police station before, even in the U.S., but here I was in Korea, and I was greeted by friendly people. The pouch with my passport in it had my contact information written on the inside, and they said they would contact me with that. The bag was found in a marketplace, and the first person to report it was the stall owner of the place where I had my first sundae. It also had all of my clean, new Korean money in it, which I had exchanged separately.
I was so impressed with how conscientious Koreans are and how good they are that I was able to find the pouch, sign the paperwork, and walk out of the police station.
I went back to Gwangjang Market, and when I got there, the owner recognized me and looked like he was about to say something. I held out the bag and showed it to him, and he smiled and liked it.
I thanked the Korean boss, and we ate another snack on the spot. It was an experience that made me realize how heavenly Korea is.
And like Sarah said, I didn't just want to see how clean and pretty Korea is, I wanted to see what an American working in Korea could do and what life would be like.Through the Reddit community, I was able to get in touch with Americans working in Korea and even met some of them in person.
David, the American I met, works for a company that is not a large Korean company, but rather a small or medium-sized company. As Sarah said, Korea is a country where products are produced for the global market, and many things are actually exported overseas.
However, in Korea, unless it is a large company, every company is experiencing a job shortage, and because of the atmosphere in Korea, where foreigners are not welcome at all, it is not difficult to get a job in a company that specializes in exporting overseas, even if you are in the United States.
And David told me that he put all his passion into the first company he worked for in the U.S., and even made a lot of money for the company, but when he didn't perform, the company fired him without mercy, and he said that he was so shocked, not to mention the feeling of betrayal, that he took depression medication at that time, and it was so hard that he took depression medication, and then he found Korea by chance and settled in Korea, and now he is so happy. He told me that he was fired from his job because of the unrelenting treatment in the U.S., that he found a second chance in Korea, and that he is happy with his life here.
I'm not sure I have the courage to move to Korea right now, but I learned that there are a lot of people like Sarah and David who have been hurt so badly that they end up leaving the country. I'm scared that this could be my future, but I also learned that Korea is an option for me if it happens to me.My trip ended like this: experiencing the culture, food, and hospitality of Korea, and getting to meet and talk to Americans living in Korea, made my trip much more rewarding than my trip to Japan, which could have been an anime trip.
Korea has given me new perspectives and experiences, shattered my notion that Japan is only good, broadened my horizons, and opened my eyes to another gem that is Korea.
I now like to say to my friends, "Go to Korea, you'll see how good it is." Korea has taught me so much, and I will cherish my experience in Korea, which now holds a special place in my heart.
If Sarah goes to Korea and settles down, I will be there to congratulate her and support her in her new relationship in Korea.

OUSD (R&E) CRITICAL TECHNOLOGY AREA(S): Advanced Materials

The technology within this topic is restricted under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), 22 CFR Parts 120-130, which controls the export and import of defense-related material and services, including export of sensitive technical data, or the Export Administration Regulation (EAR), 15 CFR Parts 730-774, which controls dual use items. Offerors must disclose any proposed use of foreign nationals (FNs), their country(ies) of origin, the type of visa or work permit possessed, and the statement of work (SOW) tasks intended for accomplishment by the FN(s) in accordance with the Announcement. Offerors are advised foreign nationals proposed to perform on this topic may be restricted due to the technical data under US Export Control Laws.

OBJECTIVE: The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) seeks to promote responsive, best value supplies of related materials, components, and systems to Department of Defense (DoD) customers and other DoD stakeholders. DLA investigates advancements in technologies and business processes for new and improved materials, more efficient means of their production, and competitive domestic supply chains which will lead to greater innovation in current and future defense systems combined with benefits to other commercial and government applications.
DLA is interested in exploring future defense industrial base uses for scandium (Sc) because of its unique properties as a pure metal and, as an alloying agent, to significantly increase the performance of traditional aluminum (Al) alloys, and therefore expand the use of Al alloys. Further benefits include, substituting aluminum-scandium (Al-Sc) alloys for incumbent expensive materials (e.g., titanium) and/or replacing material forms that are both costly and difficult to source (e.g., forging, complex machined parts, and extrusions), as Al-Sc alloys are highly compatible with additive manufacturing techniques.
Scandium can impart high strength properties to Al alloys which allows for reduced weight designs (compared to traditional Al alloy) and components for a wide range of defense platforms and other military items. Al-Sc alloys exhibit increased resistance to high temperature and corrosion when compared to common Al alloys. Of further interest, is the high weldability of Al-Sc alloy. Alloys with high weldability can reduce manufacturing labor and other costs associated with joining components and structures. Al-Sc alloy can be especially useful when used as a powder or wire in additive manufacturing. Potential DoD applications for Al-Sc alloy include the production and sustainment of missiles, aircraft, space launch vehicles, satellites, solider systems, military ground vehicles, marine applications, and other weapon systems (e.g., small arms and artillery).
While Sc metal has many attractive material characteristics, its cost is frequently considered prohibitive for Al alloying purposes compared to other alloying elements. In addition, the supply of Sc metal and compounds is limited and highly concentrated in a small number of foreign countries including China and Russia. As such, there is reluctance to develop wide scale uses for Al-Sc alloys for many applications including DoD weapon systems and large-scale non-defense applications (e.g., commercial aviation and automotive manufacturing).

In the United States mining operations for Sc ore are being planned and developed to feed a domestic supply chain and, recently, new sources of Sc now exist in Canada (an important member country of DoD’s National Technology Industrial Base). There are also established defense industrial base companies and other businesses in both countries that can significantly contribute to development and commercialization of Al-Sc supply chains for both military and commercial applications.

Given the important properties of Sc, and in anticipation of increased affordable domestic supply, DLA is interested in engaging small businesses with the capability to develop and expand expertise and industrial base production capacity of Sc-containing materials, especially in areas relevant to the supply of Al-Sc alloy components for DoD end-uses.

Specific materials, processing and manufacturing areas of interest include:

  • Raw material refining
  • High purity Sc metals, compounds, and alloys
  • Additive manufacturing feedstock
  • Additively manufactured DoD systems prototype parts

Research and Development (R&D) efforts selected under this topic shall demonstrate and involve a degree of risk where the technical feasibility of the proposed work has not been fully established. Further, proposed efforts must be judged to be at a Technology and/or Manufacturing Readiness Level (TRL/MRL) 6 or less, but greater than TRL/MRL 3 to receive funding consideration.

TRL 3. (Analytical and Experimental Critical Function and/or Characteristic Proof of Concept)
TRL 6. (System/Subsystem Model or Prototype Demonstration in a Relevant Environment)

DESCRIPTION: DLA seeks SBIR project opportunities in new and innovative materials, processing, and manufacturing of Sc compounds, Sc metal, Al-Sc alloy and master alloys, and related areas of additive manufacturing. While Al and Sc are the primary metals of interest for this solicitation, it is anticipated that additional alloying elements may be included to tailor the final alloy properties. Specific areas of interest include:

  • Processing mining ores (and/or scrap waste streams) into high purity Sc compounds (ex., Sc-oxide) feedstock for production of pure Sc metal, Al-Sc alloy, master alloys, etc.
  • Commercial production of high purity Sc metal (domestic feedstock preferred)
  • Commercial production of Al-Sc alloy powder and wire for additive manufacturing
  • Demonstrating additively manufactured Al-Sc alloy parts for DoD weapon systems.

DLA seeks opportunities that include strong industry supply chain collaboration with established materials companies relevant to the above areas of interest in Sc materials processing, as well as strong collaboration with traditional or non-traditional DoD weapon systems suppliers. DLA similarly desires SBIR opportunities that include collaboration with interested DoD weapon system program offices and/or relevant DoD RDT&E organizations.

PROJECT DURATION and COST: Proposals exceeding these limits will not be evaluated.
PHASE I: Not to exceed a duration of 12 months and cost of $100,000.
PHASE II: Not to exceed a duration of 24 months and cost of $1,000,000.

PHASE I: Phase I will demonstrate proof of concept in one or more of the above areas of interest in scandium materials and processing. A technology development and commercialization roadmap will be produced along with a preliminary business case analysis for transition and industrial scale up. Strong industry supply chain collaboration with established materials companies relevant to the above areas of interest in scandium materials and processing is expected, along with involvement of one or more traditional or non-traditional DoD weapon systems suppliers. Strong support from one or more interested DoD weapon system program offices and/or relevant DoD RDT&E organization required.

PHASE II: Depending on Phase I results, Phase II will consist of establishing pilot scale or low-rate production of technologies that are successfully demonstrated in Phase I. Additional activities may include further materials and processing testing, characterization, and data base development of related materials and processes that can be used by future producers of scandium materials of interest (e.g., compounds, metals, alloys, and master alloys as well as related additive manufacturing powders and wire, and fabricators of aluminum scandium end-items). Development of a detailed business case analysis and commercialization plan will be required.

Strong industry supply chain collaboration with established materials companies relevant to the above areas of interest in scandium materials and processing, along with involvement from traditional and/or non-traditional DoD weapon systems suppliers, is required, along with strong support from interested DoD weapon system program offices and/or relevant DoD RDT&E organizations.

Innovative materials and processes, and commercially viable sources of their supply, shall be developed with the goal to readily transition to production in support of DoD and its supply chains.
PHASE III DUAL USE APPLICATIONS: Phase III is any proposal that derives from, extends or completes a transition from a Phase I or II project. Phase III proposals will be accepted after the completion of Phase I and or Phase II projects.
There is no specific funding associated with Phase III, except Phase III is not allowed to use SBISTTR coded funding. Any other type of funding is allowed.
Phase III proposal Submission. Phase III proposals are emailed directly to DLA SBIR2@dla.mil. The PMO team will set up evaluations and coordinate the funding and contracting actions depending on the outcome of the evaluations. 1. Conclusions Noting that AA7075-T6 is widely used by both fixed- and rotary-wing military aircraft, as well as in space structures, the initial objective of this study was to directly compare crack growth in identical AA7075-T6 and Scalmalloy specimens tested in the same servohydraulic facility under the same stresses and by the same operators. The experimental data reveal that Boeing Space, Intelligence, and Weapons Systems AM-built Scalmalloy appears to be more damage tolerant than the conventionally built aluminium alloy AA7075-T6. As a result, Boeing Space, Intelligence, and Weapons Systems printed Scalmalloy would appear to be particularly attractive for use on a range of military aircraft, as well as for space applications. It also highlights the potential for Boeing Space, Intelligence, and Weapons Systems Scalmalloy to be used to extend the operational lives of military aircraft through the on-demand printing of limited life Scalmalloy replacement parts. The results of this initial test program have led to the hypothesis that the da/dN versus ∆K curves associated with Scalmalloy and conventionally built AA2024-T3 should be similar. This hypothesis was, subsequently, validated by comparison to AA2024-T3 da/dN versus ∆K curves taken from the Nasgro database. This observation subsequently led to the conjecture that the small crack da/dN versus ∆K curves associated with Scalmalloy and AA2024-T3, which are needed for a durability analysis, should be similar. If this hypothesis can be confirmed, then given that: (i) Scalmalloy has a yield stress significantly greater than that of AA2024-T3; (ii) AA2024-T3 is widely used in both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft; (iii) MIL-STD-1530D mandates that there must be no yield at 100% DLL and the US Joint Services Structural Guidelines JSSG2006 states that there should be no yield at 115% DLL, the use of Scalmalloy for both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, and drones would appear to be very attractive. As such, the next stage in the study will involve the determination of valid upper bound da/dN versus ∆K curves for the growth of short cracks in AA2024-T3.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (August 14, 2023) – A phased program to establish U.S. commercial production of aluminum-scandium (“AlSc”) master alloy took another step forward recently as NioCorp Developments Ltd. (“NioCorp” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ:NB) (TSX:NB) and its development partner Nanoscale Powders LLC (“Nanoscale”) successfully produced scandium metal at pilot-scale at a facility owned and operated by Creative Engineers in Pennsylvania.
The next step in the pilot-scale program is to produce kilogram-sized ingots of AlSc master alloy for independent testing and commercial product samples. The first of these AlSc master alloy ingots is expected to be produced in the coming weeks.

Three-Phase Commercialization Program

NioCorp and Nanoscale are pursuing a three-phased development plan for commercial production of AlSc master alloy. The goal of this program is to achieve full-scale AlSc master alloy production at approximately the same time as the Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project (the “Elk Creek Project”) achieves commercial operation and planned production of approximately 100 tonnes per year of scandium oxide.
  1. Pilot scale batch production of 10 kilogram master alloy ingots**. Master alloy produced will be fully analyzed (metals and gases) at independent test facilities. Ingot samples will be available for third-party examination and prospective customer testing / sampling.**
  2. Commercial demonstration production of 100 kg ingots**. NioCorp expects to perform this work at a third-party ingot casting facility, which is expected to significantly reduce development timelines and cost as well as leverage existing facility permits and operator experience. The objective of this stage will be to optimize the production process and operating conditions.**
  3. Full scale commercial production of master alloy**. Assuming successful results at the pilot scale and commercial demonstration stages, and once project financing is obtained, NioCorp intends to secure an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contractor to construct, start up, and commission a full-scale production facility with the capacity to consume up to the Elk Creek Project’s projected scandium production of approximately 100 tonnes (Sc metal contained in master alloy) per year. NioCorp intends to co-locate the full-scale production facility with the Elk Creek Project in Nebraska in order to take advantage of the infrastructure (i.e., low-cost power, water, and natural gas) that will be in place for mining operations.**
NioCorp and Nanoscale also plan to develop recycling approaches for scrap alloy, including work-in-process material and post-production scrap.

***SEE RESPONSES FROM NIOCORP/JIM SIMS FROM AUGUST 14, 2023 ~Good morning - Jim!

While waiting for Niocorp’s 2023 F.S. Release… The announcement for Scandium Alloy Production & Scandium alloy funding are most welcome!

Leading me to add to my line of questions regarding Scandium & (Niocorp).

A) Would Niocorp qualify for a portion of this recent funding once approved by Congress? Moving forward.
RESPONSE:

"This funding was placed in the FY24 DoD Appropriations bill at the request of Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, for the purpose of helping to fund NioCorp's effort to establish domestic commercial production of AlSc master alloy. There is always a process within the DoD to select appropriate projects with funding provided to it by Congress. In this case, however, the House and Senate Armed Services Committees provided additional guidance to DoD on this topic in their respective National Defense Authorization bills, including prioritizing domestic production of such materials. "

Next Question ~ For context:

(Imperial mining, CleanTech, & Scandium International all have patents on Scandium & Sc aluminum alloy products. Rio Tinto has established a North American domestic supply(@15 tons/year with expansion capabilities) & has established a working relationship with Boeing.
Niocorp has produced Scandium aluminum with both IBC (under Chris Huskamp now with Jabil) & with Ames Lab, but has yet to patent any process or materials.
Niocorp has established a working relationship with Nanoscale to produce patentable Scandium Aluminum products in the years ahead…)
Jim-
B) How Does/will Niocorp’s expected Scandium production & future patentable Scandium materials be utilized by management moving forward? Once realized…. ; and How do/would they compare to those materials & alloys already developed or patented?
RESPONSE:

"Latent markets for scandium oxide and aluminum-scandium master alloy – both commercial and military -- are quite large, and we are working with a number of potential scandium consumers and related technology companies interested in scandium. We will make announcements in this area as developments require. In general, we don’t comment on detailed commercial business strategies except in the course of necessary announcements and/or public filings. "

C) In addition to Niocorp’s collaboration with NanoScale. Is Niocorp currently working/engaged with other entities such as (Ames Lab, DoD, DoE, Chris Huskamp/Jabil & others) on Scandium Materials/patents?
Or on Niobium, Titanium, or Rare Earth future products (Oxides, Magnets…)
Please comment where possible.
RESPONSE:

"There are multiple such engagements ongoing now for each product in our planned product offering. In general, we don’t comment on commercial business strategies except in the course of necessary announcements and/or public filings. "

D) Are other Entities besides EXIM Bank and Stellantis still interested as possible Debt/Equity finance or Anchor Investos partners moving foward?
Leading to a Final Elk Creek Finance package?
RESPONSE:

"YES!"

The committee recognizes that China is a major producer of high-purity scandium oxide, which has many powerful applications in defense technologies, including strengthening and light-weighting defense and commercial aviation systems. As scandium oxide pro-duction is established in the United States, a missing supply chain component is the conversion of scandium from its oxide form to aluminum-scandium (AlSc) master alloy. This process step is required for utilization of U.S.-mined scandium by many defense applications. At present, production capacity of AlSc master alloy is limited to one facility in the United States. The committee recognizes that the United States may soon become a major producer of highpurity scandium oxide by virtue of a proposed mine and mineral processing project in Nebraska. The committee recognizes the defense-wide importance of a vertical domestic supply chain for both Scandium Oxide and AlSc master alloy and the critical importance of both materials for the production of air-, land-, and sea-based combat systems.

2024.05.16 00:36 5h0rgunn The Confused Envoy (1551 – 1552) The Xin-Mei Wars Ch. 3.3

[First] [Prev] [Next]
The Treasure Fleet of 1551 arrived in the last week of July that year. One ship was particularly large, well-armed, and well-decorated with Ming imperial insignia. Onboard was a man named Cui Hejing, an envoy on a mission given to him directly by the Jiajing Emperor (though not in person, given how reclusive the emperor was). Cui was politically unconnected to either Yan Song or Xu Jie, meaning that he was, theoretically, neutral in the rivalry between them, and this is why he was chosen for this mission. His orders were clear: these 'Meixigou People' would have to be brought into China's orbit. During its heyday, the Chinese overseas empire had included tributaries from all over the western Pacific and the Indian Ocean too. Things had deteriorated since then, but the Ming's self-confidence had not. Surely, after the thrashing they received at Acapulco, Meixigou would be all too happy to send a tributary embassy to Beijing to talk things out and make a deal that would allow for the unimpeded flow of silver into China (and other goods as well: Yan Song was fond of a good cup of hot cocoa in the morning).
Any deal made with the Meixigou People would need to have the support of both Wei Chengjia and Bai Guguan in order for it to hold. It didn't please the emperor to have North Province and South Province sponsoring pirates to raid each other's shipping. Actually, to be honest, the emperor didn't care as long as he got the full tribute from both provinces every year—but currently that wasn't happening.
The first order of business, then, was to meet with the two governors.
Dongguang was the eastern terminus for the Treasure Fleet in those days, so Cui met first with Bai in Dongguang, then with Wei in Ningbo. Finally, the three met in Dongguang and hashed out what they could agree to. Without the NSS under his control, Bai Guguan had turned to piracy once again to obtain the silver he needed, and was still falling well short of what he owed the emperor (This was called the Third Silver War, a conflict on the high seas that began in 1550 with Wei's reinstatement). That would have to stop, Cui told him. Bai was happy to cease sponsoring pirates if Cui could convince the Meixigou People to let DSS members purchase silver. Cui asked Wei why he hadn't done more to convince the Meixigou People to remain peaceable, to which Wei responded by pointing out that Bai had sent a military expedition to wreck a Meixigou port. Bai countered with the accusation that Wei started the Silver Wars by attacking the Cabrillo Expedition under false flags, which Wei denied.
Cui Hejing sighed.
Negotiations carried on for several days in the first week of August, with Wei and Bai frequently arguing while Cui played the peacemaker. Wei Chengjia agreed to support South Province's right to trade with Meixigou in exchange for a concession near and dear to Bai Guguan's economic policy.
In 1450, the Treasure Fleet had officially been established as an annual convoy sailing between Xinguo and China, sanctioned by the imperial government and given a naval escort. The Jingtai Emperor who ruled China at the time set the fleet's terminus at Dongguang in order to hurt Wei Shuifu, whom the emperor deemed to be too powerful already. As the discoverer of Xinguo and the biggest proponent of settling the New World, Wei Shuifu had immense influence in the early colonisation period. Having the Treasure Fleet stop in Dongguang was of profound importance for the city's economy. Establishments such as hotels and pubs thrived on the business brought by the Fleet, farmers and fishermen sold their products to restock the Fleet for the return trip, and even Ningbo had to come to Dongguang to deliver its annual tribute to the Fleet, while NSS merchants had to come to purchase Asian wares for resale in Xinguo. All this gave Dongguang a significant edge over its rival. Over the years, the fleet had occasionally stopped in Ningbo instead, when emperors felt they needed to send a message to Dongguang, but they always switched it back to Dongguang within a few years. In 1551, however, Wei Chengjia's requirement for his support of a deal with Meixigou was that Ningbo be set as the permanent terminus for the Treasure Fleet. Bai Guguan agreed to this, albeit begrudgingly. Both men shook hands and signed a paper agreeing to these terms. Two copies were made of the paper, one of which was kept by each governor while Cui Hejing kept the original. No chances were to be taken on either man reneging on his side of the deal.
The hard part was done. Now it was time to deliver a message to the foreigners requiring their presence in Beijing at the earliest possible time.
Cui Hejing sailed his ship down to Acapulco, arriving on August 18th, 1551. Fortunately for him, Chinese ships arriving at Acapulco were an everyday occurrence so soon after the Treasure Fleet's arrival. Pirates were on a campaign of plunder all around Acapulco and the Spaniards still couldn't tell the difference between a North Province freighter, a South Province freighter, and a Wokou pirate ship. Sometimes, pirates pretended to be merchants until they got close, then opened fire. This made the Spaniards rather trigger happy for most of the year, wary as they were of ambushes. With so many North Province merchantmen showing up in the preceding week, however, Cui made it into the harbour without difficulty. The harbour was now overlooked by Fuerte de Oñate, a newly-constructed star fort on the west side of the bay named for Cristobal de Oñate himself. Colloquially, it was called Fuerte del Vasco, or Fort of the Basque, in reference to Oñate's heritage. In 1551, the fort was rather bare-bones and parts of it were still under construction, but eventually it would be expanded into a sprawling defensive network, making Acapulco the most heavily fortified city on the Pacific coast of Spanish America. It was home to a permanent garrison of 1,000 men and 8 warships, who were constantly on the lookout for pirates. Bai Guguan's privateers often ambushed ships exiting the bay or even sneaked into the port at night for a little moonlit robbery. The Spaniards had already picked up the word 'Wokou' from their North Province trading parters as 'Oacao,' which they applied indiscriminately to all pirates or privateers originating from north of Mexico and operating in the Pacific Ocean. In later centuries, 'Oacao' would even be applied to British, Portuguese, and Russian privateers in the Pacific.
Upon Cui Hejing's arrival, he introduced himself and his mission to the mayor of Acapulco. This was conveyed to Mexico City, where it was received by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza. Mendoza invited Cui to the capital. Upon arrival, Cui Hejing delivered a letter inviting Meixigou to send a tributary embassy to Beijing so that they could establish diplomatic ties with the Ming Dynasty. This was standard Ming practice. No one could have diplomatic ties with China without bringing tribute for the emperor. The emperor would respond to the tribute with a gift of his own, although this part doesn't seem to have been communicated clearly enough.
The viceroy, however, didn't have the power to authorise such a mission on his own, so he penned a letter to Madrid and sent it, along with Cui's invitation (together with a Spanish translation), to Spain. Two months was the minimum time in which to expect a reply, but three was more realistic.
Cui Hejing was incensed upon being told he'd have to wait for three months, give or take. He decried this as an outrage—how dare a mere king like the ruler of Meixigou make the emperor's envoy sit and wait? Mendoza reminded Cui that he, Mendoza, was just a viceroy, and that he needed authorisation from Madrid to get such a thing done. Then he told Cui again to settle in and wait. Cui was given comfortable lodgings, but simply couldn't contain his anger at being forced to wait. Every day, he sent complaints to the viceroy's office along with requests to see the king of Meixigou.
In truth, Mendoza had no patience for Cui Hejing's antics. He was preoccuppied with making a choice he'd been given by Emperor Karl V of the Holy Roman Empire, who was also King Carlos I of Spain. Since the viceroy of Peru had been killed by rebels in 1546, Peru needed a new one, a position which had been offered to Mendoza. In fact, a week after Cui's arrival on the Pacific coast, a man from Spain arrived on the Atlantic coast with orders to take up whichever viceregal position Mendoza turned down.
There were plenty of other, more pressing matters on Mendoza's plate as well. The Chichimec War was still blazing, cutting into New Spain's potential silver output. The war was so expensive New Spain kept having to beg Madrid for money to pay for it. In addition, conquistadors were still pushing the frontiers ever northward and southward, Maya city-states on the Yucatan peninsula were giving them trouble, and there was the matter of the New Laws. When a conquistador conquered a new area, he effectively installed himself as feudal lord of that area. Madrid gave a stamp of approval to this practice by creating the encomienda system, which converted the indigenous population of the area into the conquistador's serfs. Madrid dislike the practice, however. Unlike China, Spain took an active role in colonial administration and was loathe to allow conquistadors to establish hereditary control of large swathes of the New World. Therefore, they'd introduced a series of laws in the 1540s in the hopes of curbing the power of the encomenderos. Enforcement of these laws in Peru led to the viceroy being killed. In New Spain, Antonio de Mendoza adopted a policy which he described thusly: “I obey, but I do not comply.” In other words, he applied the New Laws very carefully and very selectively, so as to avoid the fate of Peru's viceroy.
All in all, Cui Hejing had come at a bad time. Furthermore, he seems to have been profoundly confused by the situation. As discussed previously, 'Spain' was referred to by the Xinguans as 'Meixigou', or some variation thereof. This was taken from 'Mexica,' which was the Aztecs' name for themselves. Xinguans saw the Spaniards as being akin to a new dynasty ruling the same land that'd long been one of their prime sources of silver. The land was still Meixigou, and its people were still Meixigou People, regardless of who was ruling there. Thus, officials back in China were given the impression that 'Meixigou' was a kingdom existing in the New World presided over by a viceroy, whom they interpreted as the equivalent of a prime minister. Meixigou's king was, presumably, residing in Mexico City, or in a country house somewhere nearby. They had no concept of Meixigou's connection to Spain—not that they would've known what Spain was anyway. Despite an overwhelming air of superiority over all others, China has traditionally been a rather insular place that prefers to deal with its own matters and doesn't pay a lot of attention to things far from its own borders. Europe was very far away indeed, so China had little idea of the political geography of the continent. Europeans were likewise rather ignorant about Asia in the mid-16th century.
Hence Cui Hejing's angst. He seems to have been under the impression that Mendoza was making up a story about a capital city (Madrid) on the other side of another ocean purely to snub to Cui. There was no reason in Cui's eyes why he shouldn't be allowed to see the king of Meixigou, and it was making him madder by the day. Mendoza wasn't helping things either. He was busy with other matters and anyway, he was pretty confident Karl V wasn't about to send tribute on demand to another emperor on the other side of the globe (Mendoza also doesn't seem to have caught the part where the Jiajing Emperor would reciprocate the tribute with a gift of his own—or perhaps he simply didn't care).
On August 29th, Cui Hejing announced he wasn't going to wait any longer. He told his hosts that they'd be sorry they snubbed an envoy of the emperor, then he packed his bags, headed back to Acapulco, and set sail for Xinguo. Mendoza made no attempt to hinder his departure.
Upon his return to Xinguo, Cui Hejing considered what he'd done. Going back to China without accomplishing anything was out of the question. He didn't want to end up being banished to the western frontier like Lin Weishi and Peng Chao'an. That would end his career, or at best would be a long hiatus before he might be allowed to return. Therefore, Cui resolved to get at least half of his mission completed.
To that end, he met with Wei and Bai again and informed them about what'd happened in Acapulco. However, the fact of Meixigou's non-compliance didn't have to be a problem. Circumvention of Meixigou's ban on DSS merchants coming to Acapulco wouldn't be hard. All they needed was for NSS merchants to purchase twice as much silver as they needed and sell the excess to the DSS. That way, South Province could still get the silver it needed. Wei agreed readily, but he still wanted the Treasure Fleet to switch its destination to Ningbo. Bai took a day to mull it over before finally agreeing. There was one condition, however. Wei would purchase silver from the NSS merchants out of his own pocket and then sell it to Bai at cost. This would mean Bai wouldn't have to pay an exorbitant mark-up for the silver he needed to pay the tribute. Wei agreed. Once again, three sets of the agreement were written out and signed by both governors. It might as well have been a treaty between foreign nations.
Cui Hejing returned to China with the Treasure Fleet in July 1552, with the agreement between the two governors in hand. Although it wasn't strictly necessary for him to wait to return with the Fleet, he thought it best to present the emperor with news of his trip at the same time as he received full tribute from both provinces, including the back-tribute South Province owed from 1551 and '50. Yan Song was incensed at Cui Hejing's account of how he was treated in Mexico, as was the Jiajing Emperor when Yan relayed the story to him. They were also upset at Cui Hejing for his reckless initiative in coming up with a solution all on his own. That being said, the Jiajing Emperor was now getting what he wanted. Needless to say, tribute wasn't coming from Meixigou. However, Bai Guguan had agreed to stop sponsoring pirates, which put an end to the Third Silver War (1550 – 1552), and South Province was now able to meet its tribute obligations. This was... an acceptable outcome.
Far from the banishment he'd been fearing, Cui Hejing was rewarded with a position as permanent commissioner to Xinguo. A commissioner was a man who was given the power to represent the emperor in order to accomplish a specific mission. Typically, any such commission was temporary, but in Cui's case it was a permanent posting. He would travel to Xinguo every year to relay the emperor's will to the governors and collect their reports on happenings in the colonies before returning to China to hand these in to the emperor (or at least, to the senior grand secretary). True to his agreement with Wei Chengjia, Cui Hejing managed to convince Yan Song to divert the Treasure Fleet to Ningbo. It took some persuasion, but it wasn't too hard since Yan Song viewed Bai Guguan as an ally of his arch-rival Xu Jie ever since Lin Weishi's expedition.

Occupation of Paradise A House Divided
Ever since the rise of Japanese influence within the Pacific, seeking to stake early claims as European eyes increasingly sought out to mark out their own territorial ambitions as had happened to the likes of Africa or China, the Kingdom of Hawai’i found itself under the Japanese thumb for decades. Reduced to a mere vassal until being annexed outright and placed under the direct rule of Tokyo, life for Hawaiians living in the country became as much as one would expect to a territory seen as on the imperial periphery of the Rising Sun’s ambitions for the broader Pacific at large. Crackdowns on dissenters and supposed enemies, and increased deployment of Japanese soldiers to the island territory to keep order.
Whilst the process technically began when Hawai’i was a vassal state, following annexation, the policy of forced Japanification of the island chain’s populace ramped up. Involving the stifling of the Hawaiian language and customs whilst enforcing the Japanese language at the intentional expense of the locals regardless of origin prior to Japanese annexation. Such a system would prompt a slow migration out of the island chain, mostly by Hawaiian-Americans to the United States following the turn of the 20th Century with some of the more notable examples being the likes of Hiram Bingham III who’d go on to serve in the Rocky Mountain War, and later as US Senator for the Solidarity Party.
This status quo would exist unchanged until 1934, which would see the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War. The United States under President John Dewey expressed support for Russia, vowing to deliver aid to the battered Russian army only to be stymied in Congress by Isolationist Social Democrats, something that’d later go on to be a precursor to the larger schism that’d take place in the party years later. In response to the American pledge for aid, the Japanese presence in Hawai’i increased with the stationing of more troops and especially the arrival of Kempeitai agents to be on the lookout for suspected spies for the United States, as military commanders in Tokyo now started to contemplate the prospect that the US and Japan may come to blows against each other in the relatively near future.

Such an anti-American sentiment would increase the Hawaiian-American drive for those who didn’t feel secure within the country to leave to the United States, something that’d continue up until the summer of 1939 following the declaration of war upon Japan by the US under the Hayes administration.
What followed was the effective declaration of martial law in the islands. Civilian movement in or out of the chain was strictly forbidden unless given permission to do so by the local government, and American-Hawaiians meanwhile, were to be rounded up and placed in internment camps until the war was over. This however would be changed as Japanese military commanders would rightfully suspect American military plans would depend on taking the islands, and the bombings at San Diego and in general along the West Coast were mere delay tactics. Thus, the use of forced labor would begin to be used in Hawai’i, at first by convicts but later would be drawn in to include inturned American-Hawaiians, local native Hawaiians and migrants to the territory to erect military fortifications with the full intent of making the Americans bleed for every inch of the island chain.
The suspicions of the Japanese commanders would be proven right during the battle for Midway in 1943, to Hawai’i’s northwest. Whilst the battle was inconclusive, and Japanese forces took it as a sign that Hawai’i’s defenses were practically impenetrable, it did still linger in the backs of their minds of the prospect of an American invasion of, potentially, an encirclement.
Needless to say, the conditions that many had found themselves to work in by force had led to a dramatic decline in the quality of life for many as the forced labor resulted in many dying for a variety of reasons. To replace the dead, the Japanese would start bringing in captured civilians from occupied territories or POWs. One of these surviving POWs would be US navy pilot George H. W. Bush, who’d go on to recount to Congress his experience as a slave on Hawai’i in 1948.
“I was with a small group of other people. We were tired, barely eaten and constantly being yelled at. Not like I, or anyone else I was with could understand much of what was verbally bombarded at us. We could barely understand each other, considering I was an American stuck with a Filipino, three Chinese men, a Mexican, two guys from India and a German. But we all understood one thing.
Do as they gestured for you to do, or they’d shoot you. Saw it happen more times than I could count.
It was bad enough that we weren’t armed, but they also made sure to try and starve us. To exhaust us. Break out will of even looking at them funny.”
Photograph of early forced labor being used in Hawai'i.
Once the war swung decisively against the Japanese and Hawai’i found itself navally encircled, the Imperial army’s mindset of never surrendering kicked in. Slavery on the island expanded from the construction of military fortifications, now with the full intent of fighting for every last inch of Hawai’i from all sides, but to also farm and mine for raw materials to sustain operations for as long as possible. The nearly four remaining years of the war would go on to be the darkest in the modern history of Hawai'i.
The situation in the islands up until Japan’s surrender in 1947 matched the ferocity and desperation to never surrender at gunpoint, with the remaining IJA forces clamping down harder and harder upon the territory. Even the most wealthy landed Hawaiians who were previously exempt from the Japanese wrath started to feel the heat. Mass executions for the most minor of crimes took place as famine started to creep in thanks to the agricultural efforts happening in soil that lacked fertility due to the influence of Hawai’i’s elite to make sure their properties were untouched.
It would only be until the broadcast of Japanese surrender broadly by the Emperor himself that’d get the majority of IJA troops in Hawai’i to stand down and also accept surrender. Following this, Hawai’i found itself under military occupation by the United States, who was tasked with first stabilizing the situation as by this point, the islands had fallen under a litany of crises that tested the capacity of the occupied government greatly as the chain was on the cusp of entering a famine with looters out on the streets of major cities, medical supplies scarce in the face of disease outbreaks of Black Death and ultimately, an inability to provide more housing than it currently could.
Tasked with the responsibility of overseeing Hawai’i was the newly promoted lieutenant general; William Howard Arnold. Starting off as a humble division leader, Arnold would find himself moving up the ranks of leadership over the course of the war until being promoted to Lt. General to serve as Allied Commander of Hawai’i.
William Howard Arnold; Allied Commander of Hawai'i.
First order of business upon arriving in Honolulu was securing the logistical situation on the island. While food and medical imports started arriving to Hawai’i shortly after surrender, Arnold discovered the rate was woefully insufficient. Fortunately he didn’t have to look far as the US army would organize the distribution of relief across much of the Pacific. Making use of America’s economy still being in a state of war-time production, Arnold and his men would ensure the stabilization of Hawai’i’s medical crisis and risk of famine through 1947 to 1949. It’d be during this time too when those forcefully taken to Hawai’i during the war to serve as slave labor would be brought back to their nations of origin. Often, this would involve Arnold’s staffers needing to make several dozen phone calls a day to ambassadors of the various nations that these prisoners came from to help organize their return.
As the worst excesses of Hawai’i’s troubles was being resolved, now came the matter of governance and the creation of a provisional government. With no real royal family left, and under orders from the White House, Arnold agreed to ensure the establishment of a republican government. The orders to establish an independent Hawai’ian republic came from President Alvin York himself, following the same principles that led to the independence of Taiwan, Indonesia, Manchuria, the Philippines, and Korea in an attempt to keep the perspective of America being an anti-colonialist liberator, rather than a conqueror.
To serve as the president of this provisional government, Arnold would meet with Samuel Wilder King. King was a former member of the Honolulu City Council, upon the Board of Supervisors and also representative for Honolulu within the local territorial government, but would find himself forced to resign and later placed under house arrest for objecting to the usage of forced labor and unlawful violence against prisoners of war for the duration of the war until the arrival of American GIs shortly after Japan’s surrender.
Samuel Wilder King; President of Hawai'i.
King would accept the proposal, but would also go on to point out to Arnold that the island was majority populated by Japanese, native and other Asian-Hawaiians and whilst he may have been a native, it was on the grounds of being mixed with an American-Hawaiian father. If the role of president in Hawai’i, following the model seen in other republics, is to purely be ceremonial and the real power would be expected to be in the Prime Minister, getting a man from one of these majority populations would work better in bridging the gap.
Given the difficulties facing the people living in Hawai’i, King suggested crossing the ideological aisle and attempting to convince Koji Ariyoshi to perhaps serve as Prime Minister. Ariyoshi for his part was a labor activist, and later served as an anti-war dissident that’d have him partake in forced labor for a brief period of time. Arnold however, had different plans. Viewing Ariyoshi with suspicion and frankly unsure if York would’ve even accepted a socialist becoming the first Prime Minister of Hawai’i, he instead turned to Pai’ea Chung-Hoon. Chung-Hoon himself was a relatively low profile individual who served in the Imperial Japanese Navy, often being used as more of a propaganda piece for the Japanese empire on the Co-Prosperity Sphere. Chung-Hoon resented the position but found it difficult to leave and it has been something that has hung over him since the end of the war.
Pai’ea Chung-Hoon; Prime Minister of Hawai'i.
When Arnold arrived to meet him, Chung-Hoon had fully expected that he'd potentially be placed on trial, only to be surprised when offered the role of Prime Minister of a provisional government though quickly accepted upon Arnold’s insistence. By the start of the 1948 summer season, Hawai’i had a head of state and head of government. Drafting the constitution of Hawai’i would take the rest of the summer, seeing the remodeling or outright bulldozing of Hawai’ian government institutions to make way for the government.
However, there was another aspect that York, although gone by this point, had insisted with President Merriam also insisting to Arnold. Hawai’i must tolerate an American military presence on the grounds of overall Pacific security. Meeting again with King and Chung-Hoon, the two men and Arnold would come to a deal in allowing the presence of American forces in the country, however it’d come on the grounds that the US navy gets to use Pearl Harbor as a major naval installation for its Pacific fleet, and effectively handing over the island of Kaho‘olawe to serve as a military base for the Americans, under a legally binding lease that would last over eighty years and under the expectations that the Americans would be the ones paying for the installations.
Pearl Harbor for its part was a major port before the war, and would be at times home to fleets of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Kaho‘olawe meanwhile, being entirely uninhabited, was used as a munitions testing ground and target practice for training naval crews at Hawai’i.
Photograph taken of Japanese munitions testing on the island.
Whilst President Merriam and Congress would sign off on this agreement with the 1948 Treaty of Honolulu, the move back in Hawai’i was met with mixed reception. The loss of an uninhabited island and a major port being repurposed for another power for eighty years wasn’t the most shocking, yet it seemingly did question the legitimacy of the claim that America was liberating the Pacific, yet taking an entire island for itself to have a practically for many, permanent troop garrison in the country.
Koji Ariyoshi himself, becoming a writer for the Honolulu Record, an effective mouthpiece for the newly formed Hawaiian Labor Party, would write critical essays, calling the United States hypocritical in his pledges when such demands could’ve been sorted through treating Hawai’i as an equal and not a subordinate. This however wouldn’t stop either Hawai’ian legislature from giving their approval of the treaty.
Come the turn of the new year in January of 1949, Arnold would resign his position as the Allied Commander of Hawai’i following King’s proclamation declaring the new republic’s independence to join the leagues of newly created nations that had sprung up in the post-war springtime of nations across much of the Asia-Pacific region. With the pledge of a general election to be held in August of 1951, what happens to Hawai’i shall be up to its voters to ultimately decide.

Etymology and other trivia:
  • Jariot is a portmanteau of jari (Japanese for "gravel") and chariot.
  • The Gray in Gray-Bronze Dragon seems to be a contraction of great.
  • Hybridrive is a portmanteau of hybrid and drive—a mass-storage hardware device in which the mechanism for reading and writing data is integrated with the mechanism for storing data.
  • Releaslayer is a portmanteau of release (the OCG term for Tributing), lily, Lilith, and slayer.
  • Inko is the Japanese name for the true parrots
  • Mekuru is Japanese for "to turn over" or "to flip over," and is the OCG term for excavating.
  • Ku comes from baku—a Japanese supernatural being resembling a tapir that is said to devour nightmares.
  • Cyberspyce is a portmanteau of Cyberse, cyberspace, spy, and spice.
  • Hotpot is likely based on BellaBot—a versatile service robot with a cat-like appearance for serving guests in hotels, restaurants, bars, and events. A hotpot is a mixture of meat and vegetables, sometimes including sliced potatoes, cooked slowly in a covered dish inside an oven, or in a special heated pan.
  • Demeter is the Olympian goddess of the harvest and agriculture, presiding over crops, grains, food, and the fertility of the earth.
  • Garam masala is an aromatic mixture of ground spices used in Indian cuisine. The rest of the Cyberspyce monsters are mostly named after spices used in this mixture.
  • Dark matter is a theoretical substance existing in space that does not give off any light.
  • The yell used in Dead-Yell's name is Japanese wasei-eigo for cheering (esp. for a school sports team).
  • Craydoll seems to be a portmanteau of cradle and doll.
  • Hazardoll is a portmanteau of hazard and doll.
  • Freya (Fureiya) is a pun on furē (the Japanese pronunciation of "hurray"), a phrase commonly shouted during cheering, and Freya or Freyja—one of the preeminent goddesses in Norse mythology.
  • Gareking is a portmanteau of gareki (Japanese for "rubble" or "debris") and king. Machine (Mashin) is a pun on the Japanese word mashin (meaning "devil" or "demon god").
  • Geist is German for "ghost."
  • Imperial Guard of the Wise Emperor has a similar name and effect as the OCG's Imperial Guard of the Flame Emperor (Royal Firestorm Guards in the TCG).
  • Tribern is a portmanteau of tribe (the OCG term for "Type") and wyvern.
  • Fadrawnir is a portmanteau of Fafnir (a lindworm from Norse mythology) and draw.
  • Sumskull (Tasudokuro) is a pun on the Japanese word tasu ("to add numbers").
  • Swellskull (Masudokuro) is a pun on the Japanese idiom masumasu ("more and more").
  • Beidai is based on Daikokuten—one of the Seven Lucky Gods and the god of commerce and prosperity. He is sometimes considered the patron of cooks, farmers and bankers, and a protector of crops. He is also often depicted as riding on a rice bale, hence the kanji for "rice" appearing in the card name. Beidai is also used in the Japanese phrase beidaitōryō, used to refer to the President of the United States of America, and fittingly this card's artwork is drawn in the style of an American comic book.
  • God Demon Beast - Garzett is a reference to God Mazinger—an anime, manga, and novel series created by manga artist Go Nagai.
  • Karipandrapery (Karīpandoraperī) is meant to sound like a typical name for a Hindu deity and is a portmanteau of Kali (a major Hindu goddess associated with time, change, creation, power, destruction, and death), karē-pan ("curry bread"), Pandora, and drapery (due to all the Cyberspyce cards also having a cloth motif).
  • Enigmata is a plural form of the word enigma. It is also a pun on the Latin māter ("mother").
  • Enigknight is a portmanteau of enigma and knight, while Zuwieger is a pun on Zuwijo (a character from the GO RUSH!! anime) and Sieger (German for "victor" or "champion").
  • Tribe-Mirror Dragon's name in Japanese (Toraibumirā Doragon) is made up of sounds from the other FGD-related monsters in this set: Gray-Bronze Dragon (Gureiburonzu Doragon), Water-Mirror Serpent, and Fusionic Tribern.
  • Spycecloth (Supaisukurōsu) is also a pun on cross.
  • Hybridrive Bumper is a reference to Jointech Bumper, which has a similar effect.

2024.05.15 18:07 ChillyGraham Authentic and popular Corner 21 to open second Springfield restaurant

TIL the owners of Corner 21 Chinese Cuisine named their business because it's located near a busy intersection and they were taking a gamble on Springfieldians loving their authentic dishes (21, as in blackjack). The restaurant has been successful enough that co-owners Jiapeng Lu and Yuming Han are going to open a second location. They're taking over Sugarfire Smoke House's spot at 1730 E. Republic Road.
Ryan Collins of the Springfield Daily Citizen reports the new location is much larger, giving more customers a chance to dine in. Lu and Han are special ordering furniture and equipment from China, including a grill that will allow them to make authentic Peking Duck.
You can read Ryan's story here if you're interested: https://sgfcitizen.org/economy-growth/business/authentic-and-popular-corner-21-to-open-second-springfield-restaurant/

2024.05.15 17:28 Sangenkai Morihei Ueshiba on Aikido - 1941

Thanks to Scott Burke for pointing out this Doka ("poem/song of the way") by Morihei Ueshiba that appeared in "Aikibudo o Kiku", from Shin Budo Magazine, October 1941.
Aikibudo o Kiku - 1941
”惟神光と熱の合気道, 世をば清めん八紘の玉”
Kannagara hikari to netsu no Aikidō, Yo wo ba kiyomen, Hakkō no tama
Aikido,
The Light and Heat of Kannagara,
Jewel of the Eight Directions,
Purifies the World.
Briefly, "Kannagara" refers to the "Way of the Gods", a metaphorical reference Morihei Ueshiba often used to refer to the interaction of Yin and Yang.
The interaction of Yin and Yang creates heat and light - a reference to the creation of internal power - martial power.
The "jewel" is a term that Morihei Ueshiba often used to refer to the Dantian - so, the interaction of Yin and Yang here creates internal power, martial, physical power through the Dantian.
What about the last section about the eight directions? Well, here we see, once again, Morihei Ueshiba's fondness for multiple layers of meaning.
In one layer we see that he is saying that the interaction of Yin and Yang creates internal power, martial power, physical power, through the Dantian, expressed in all directions through the body.
But that's not all! Yin/Yang and Heaven-Earth-Man cosmologies in China and Japan were commonly seen as kind of "universal field theories" that explained physical theories of martial body usage, mental theories of psychological balance, health oriented theories, and socio-politically oriented theories.
Here Morihei Ueshiba uses the Kanji for "Eight Cords", in reference to "Hakko Ichiu", the Japanese political slogan meaning the divine right of the Empire of Japan to "unify the eight corners of the world.", a slogan that formed the basis of the empire's ideology. It was popularized in a speech by Prime Minister Fumimaro Konoe, Morihei Ueshiba's patron and student, on January 8, 1940. Konoe was also on the board of directors of Morihei Ueshiba's Kobukai organization, the predecessor for the modern Aikikai.
In other words, there was another layer of meaning, in which Aikido was meant to be a process through which one worked to purify the world in order to unite it in a ultra-nationalist right wing Empire under the aegis of Japan and the Japanese imperial family.
Ellis Amdur referred to this concept in "Hidden in Plain Sight":
"Ueshiba saw himself as a kind of avatar, instrumental in ushering in a golden age of redemption, the unification of Heaven, Earth, and Man. To a considerable degree, he was unconcerned about whether others became avatars like himself. He regarded aikidō practitioners as living out their fate as appointed by their ‘chief guardian deity,’ doing the work of the ‘spiritual proletariat,’ accumulating merit and energy through aikidō practice, just as the followers of the Byakkokai did by prayer, while Goi, another avatar, did the hard work."
Morihei Ueshiba restated this basic idea in 1960:
合気道は宇宙万世一系の大いなる道なり。
"Aikido is the Great Way of the Universal Bansei Ikkei."
"Bansei Ikkei" is the "unbroken Japanese Imperial line", and here Morihei Ueshiba again refers to one of his primary goals for Aikido, expressed both before and after the war, as a way towards establishing a "paradise on Earth" - in other words (as he would say elsewhere in the same post-war lectures), a right-wing ultra-nationalist religious utopia under the aegis of the Japanese empire.
One last thing - notice the interesting use of the word "Aikido"? The Aikikai states that the name "Aikido" was adopted in 1942. Minoru Hirai, who often claims credit for the implementation of the name through his work with Dai Nippon Butokukai, also stated that this occurred in 1942. But here we see that the phrase was actually in use somewhat earlier, concurrent with "Aiki Budo" (as in the title of the article).
This persisted after the war, as recounted by Hiroshi Tada:
"GuillaumeErard.com: When you started, was it already called "Aikido"?
Tada Hiroshi: When I was admitted it was not called that yet, it was called “Aiki-Budo”. There was no official name. "
Morihei Ueshiba himself stated in a post-war interview that the name "Aikido" was adopted some time after the war, at the suggestion of an official from the Ministry of Education, which throws another issue on the pile.
What does the naming mean? Likely, much less than many people think. It's common to read significant meaning into name changes, but the name of Morihei Ueshiba's art changed many times over the years, primarily, it seems, due to the influence of parties...other than Morihei Ueshiba, who was, as far as I can tell, massively disinterested in what the art was actually called.

2024.05.15 15:58 Hanzoisbad Crocs Inc (CROX) DCF Analysis

Introduction:

CROX was introduced in the early 2000s, It was an instant hit with consumers despite CROX's unconventional designs. However, the company got too greedy and started introducing multiple products that diluted the core branding of CROX coupled with the financial crisis of 2008 led to the stagnation of CROX in the early 2010s. However, CROX had a huge boost in popularity during COVID-19, as people stayed home and prioritized comfort, purchasing a lot of athleisure products including Crocs. CROX learned from its past failures and capitalized on its resurgence through limited edition releases and collaboration with famous artists, this combined effort allowed CROX to reach nearly 4 billion in revenue in FY23.

Market:

According to the 2023 Q4 Earnings Conference, management sees strong growth potential for China, the UK, South Korea, and Australia. There are also a few large but challenging markets such as Japan and India.
In Korea, CROX’s products are popular, especially clogs due to the current fashion trend “Y2K”. Y2K is a fashion trend that celebrates the fashion trends of the early 2000s and that coincidentally happens to be the era where clogs were popular.
In Japan, CROX’s products are popular due to Japan’s strict culture around the removal of footwear in certain places e.g. Onsen, Restaurants, and Temples. This emphasis on the removal of footwear makes CROX the ideal product for Japanese consumers as CROX’s are easy to slip in and out.
India is a market with a large potential for CROX, this is due to the warm weather in India which leads consumers to prefer wearing sandals over covered shoes. However, the largest issue with CROX is that it is too expensive for the Indian consumer. A Clog costs about 3000 Rupees but the average median household income in India is 22,000 Rupees. This large price tag on CROX’s products limits the number of consumers who can afford CROX’s products.
Birkenstock is CROX’s closest competitor, creating shoes that are designed for comfort. However, Birkenstock is pivoting to becoming a luxury brand at a higher price point compared to CROX and is much less personalized to maintain its luxury look. Birkenstock is committed to maintaining its brand image as a luxury brand, even going so far as to leave Amazon. This brand image was further solidified as Birkenstock was acquired by LVMH in 2021. However, this is good for CROX as it has a significantly larger total addressable market compared to Birkenstock.

Revenue:

Shoes Sold
When forecasting the total number of Crocs sold, I assumed that CROX’s growth rate will grow at an elevated level for the next 5 years as CROX expands its presence into the new markets coupled with the rise of jibbitz, CROX's products that allow for personalization. The growth rate tapers back down.
When forecasting %DTC, Crocs is taking a leaf out of Nike and Adidas’ books by reducing their reliance on wholesalers (SOURCE). Even their closest competitor Birkenstock is pivoting towards DTC. I assumed that %DTC would grow to 60%.
Crocs Physical Revenue
When forecasting the number of company-operated Crocs stores, I assumed that the growth rate would pick up 3 years into my forecast as the interest rates environment improves which allows for CROX to expand its physical presence easily before the growth rate tapers back down.
When forecasting Revenue/Store, opting for less granularity I forecasted growth rate as a % of historic averages tapering towards the perpetual inflation rate.
Crocs Digital Revenue
When forecasting the %DTC Digital sales, opting for less granularity I assumed it remained constant as a % of historic averages.
When forecasting Price/Shoe, opting for less granularity I forecasted growth rate as a % of historic averages tapering towards the perpetual inflation rate.
Crocs Wholesale Revenue
When forecasting the price/shoe, I assumed that over time as CROX becomes more independent and less reliant on wholesalers they will be able to negotiate for more favorable terms from their wholesale partners. So I assumed that the price/shoe would grow at an elevated rate before tapering back down to the perpetual inflation rate.
HEYDUDE Revenue
When forecasting the total number of shoes sold, I assumed that the total number of shoes sold increased to a great extent in the earlier years of my forecast to reflect CROX breaking into newer markets. However, I believe that for HEYDUDE to successfully take off and become a multi-national brand it would take a long time and hence I did not reflect that in my valuation.
When forecasting the price/shoe, I assumed that the price did not grow at a fast rate in the earlier years as CROX has to appeal the HEYDUDE brand to more consumers through a lower price point. In the later years, as CROX gains pricing powers they can increase the price it charges per shoe.

Cost:

COGS and Others
When forecasting COGS and Others, opting for less granularity I forecasted it as a % of historical averages.
SG&A
When forecasting the total number of employees, I assumed that the number of employees per store remains constant with historical averages for CROX to maintain high-quality customer support in each store.
When forecasting cost per employee, I forecasted it as a % of historical averages before tapering wage growth rate at a rate in line with the perpetual inflation rate.

CapEX and D&A:

When forecasting CapEX and D&A, opting for less granularity I forecasted it as a % of historical averages.

WACC:

10Y T-Bond Yield (1M Avg) = 4.49% Beta (SOURCE) = 2.04 Stable Market ERP (SOURCE) = 4.60% COE = 13.87%
CROX’s bond is rated “BB” (SOURCE) COD (1M Avg) = 6.56% Marginal Tax Rate = 21.00% AT-COD = 5.18%
Stock Price (5D Avg) = $140.16 Shares O/S = 60.50M Market Value of Equity = 8479.68M Weighted Average Maturity of Debt = 6 Years FY23 Interest Expense = $161.35M Market Value of Debt = 2077.25M
%Debt = 19.68% %Equity = 80.32% %WACC = 12.16%

Conclusion:

Ultimately in my base case, I value CROX at $158.15 per share. I believe that CROX is undervalued by the market due to the market's wariness about the success of the HEYDUDE brand and whether CROX will be able to continue pushing higher growth rates now that the athleisure trend is over. I believe that CROX's brand will continue to improve in value given how management embraces the same scarcity strategy that elevated Adidas and Nike to legendary status. CROX is also pivoting into other core products beyond the clogs in a bid to serve the diverse needs of consumers.

2024.05.15 09:59 TheseStaff Tenkaichi AU idea : China 1928

Synopsis :
In the year 1928, the Chinese warlord era has been ranging on for more than a decade. Tearing the nation apart in to multiple fiefdoms ruled over by local warlords. Who fought each other more times than not.
China is being threatened by foreign powers, China can move forward is if united.
Reunification has been attempted many times in this era, but so far all have failed.
But a radical solution was proposed, that the most influential warlords will sponsor a fighter on their behalf. To fight in a brutal tournament, with the last fighter left standing determines who rules.
The 16 major Chinese warlords have agreed with these terms.
Roster :
IP Man - a well known & accomplished Wing Chun master from Guangdong province. Teaching his fighting style to those within his home city. His skill attracts challenges from other martial artists, that he has a tendency to accept.
Shi Jianqiao - daughter of a killed military officer turned assassin for hire. After her father was killed by a rival warlord, she trained and dedicated herself to revenge. Leaving a trail of death until she can kill the one who took her father.
Konstantin Petrovich Nechaev - former officer in imperial Russia, during the civil war he sided with the whites. After the Bolsheviks won, he like many others took up mercenary work in China. Where he became highly sought after for his combat experience, working for various warlords.
Du Yuesheng - notorious gangster, enforcer, and drug lord in the Shanghai triads. More than willing to get his own hands dirty, if it guarantees he ends up on top. While he does have experience taste, he still enjoy the occasional simple bloodshed.
Gao Shuxun - loyal elite soldier serving under the infamous Shi Yousan, played a role in burning down & desecration of ancient Shaolin monasteries on Shi orders. Though in secret Gao saved a few ancient shaolin martial manuscripts for later use.
Ma Zhongying - born to the infamous Ma family clique in China northwest, practically raised on the battlefield since he was teenager. Made a name for himself by leading massacres and hunting bandits on west China frontier.
Morris Abraham Cohen - the personal British bodyguard of Sun Yat Sen himself. Fought off multiple assassination attempts on Sun’s life. Nicknamed "Two gun" because he is skilled enough to duel wield pistols in combat.
zhang xueliang - son of the warlord of Manchuria, a natural born strategist. Unlike his father, he is pragmatic enough to learn from non Chinese tactics and training methods. Gaining him notable victories, he is also a practicing swordsman.
A/N:
only 8 fighters on the roster for now .
Like my other tenkaichi AUs, they all take place in the same very violent timeline.
In this universe after the original Oda Nobunaga's tenkaichi in 1600, it set a precedent for future tournaments of a similar nature to settle domestic disputes. Inspiring future tournaments both in & out of Japan through the centuries.
Japan would eventually have another tenkaichi in the mid 1800s.
From Josen era Korea & post revolution France, to Victorian England, ect.
America would have at least one per century, starting in 1787.
Basically instead of outright rejecting what Oda did, a few others thought Oda might have been on to something. Seeing it as a high risk yet valid political strategy.
The 1928 Chinese tenkaichi in-universe is considered by most as the first "major" tournament of the 20th century.
The American tournament occurring just 5 years later, in 1933
And the Soviet Union tournament in 1953.

2024.05.15 09:51 hackrevealblog The Restaurant Review Scam on Google

The Restaurant Review Scam on Google
A new internet fraud has arisen, in which criminals encourage people to write restaurant review on Google and offer ratings, only to take their money. A West Sagarpur resident recently filed a complaint with the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. He said that a woman approached him over WhatsApp. This woman offered the option to make money by reviewing restaurants on Google.
Not a few, but certainly a popular scam in India is taking advantage of unaware individuals searching for quick money online. One of the biggest scam of the year. Exposure reveals the involvement of over 15,000 people in India, resulting in a total loss of more than INR 700 crore. It turns out that the scam works by convincing innocent consumers to leave Google reviews and like YouTube videos in exchange for monetary rewards.
Someone in Hyderabad reported the most recent instance of this fraud. According to him, the complainant lost INR 28,00,000/- to the scam and reported it to the local crime branch.
The criminal branch said that 48 bank accounts were created against shell firms. Resulting in a total theft of INR 584 crore from consumers. It later discovered an additional 113 bank accounts worth INR 128 crore, bringing the total to more than INR 700 crore.
Later, they will transport the money to China via Dubai and convert it into untraceable cryptocurrency. The Hyderabad Police discovered that the terror group Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, participated in the scam, funneling part of the money to themselves.
The police have detained two persons in Ahmedabad, three in Mumbai, and four in Hyderabad, while six more are awaiting arrest in connection with this fraud.

I also got a scam

https://preview.redd.it/dri8x9cgpj0d1.png?width=942&format=png&auto=webp&s=217cd317a1802ecce0a5c9b5131984a1ec67363e
I once received a Whatsapp message offering a freelancing work for submitting reviews on Google Maps. With each review costing 50rs and paid after completing three jobs. Total of 24 jobs every day, however in between these activities. The prepaid tasks required you to spend an amount ranging from $2,000 to $90,000, and after 10 minutes You would receive your money back plus 50% more.
They will invite you to a Telegram group and you will start reviewing and getting paid. When jobs are done. In that group, a lot of fraudsters upload screenshots of paying for prepaid tasks like 10, 40, 90k and earning additional money for it. It’s only a trap. Initially, they pay you to establish trust, but eventually, they trap you with an enormous amount of debt.
An unknown caller asked me to write a review of an Indian restaurant for payment.
I believe it’s a scam. Today a girl contacted me from unknown number,
Because I was already aware of it, I chose to play them. They first paid me 200 rupees to submit a review on Google Maps. So that I would believe them, and then they invited me to a group with a large number of individuals in which they gave daily tasks.
The drawback is that you won’t get paid if you skip any of the tasks. In my situation, job 6 required me to give them at least 1000 rupees. So I completed 1-3 tasks in order to scam them for an additional 90 rupees. Never pay money to an unknown person, even if they show they’re real.
https://preview.redd.it/g5q9rz6opj0d1.png?width=888&format=png&auto=webp&s=dd7dbfd5c27446688911b0c375266772e218f085

Yes, it’s a scam. A bot contacted me about a work opportunity and connected me to a Telegram group. They paid me 200 INR for a review on Maps.
https://preview.redd.it/l113qpjtpj0d1.png?width=752&format=png&auto=webp&s=3acc03268a0eafe62b92cc01626d18d5bce9f20a
This is 100% scam, careful of these scammers, do a few reviews, take money, and if they ask for any money for any task. Do not pay from your end. Make few INR and block their numbers; don’t fall into the trap of completing all tasks.
They have come to scam you. They will ask you to pay a few thousand for this work after earning your confidence. The moment you pay, you are took away, and they succeed.

History of Bird Nests in Singapore

The use of bird nests in culinary practices dates back centuries, with its origins rooted deeply in traditional Chinese medicine. Initially, bird nests were consumed for their supposed health benefits, believed to improve skin complexion, boost the immune system, and enhance overall vitality.
In Singapore, bird nests became popular through the influence of Chinese immigrants who brought their culinary traditions with them. Over time, the consumption of bird nests evolved from a medicinal practice to a gourmet delicacy, enjoyed in various forms, from soups to desserts.

Types of Bird Nests

Bird nests are categorized into three main types: white, red, and yellow.

White Bird Nests

White bird nests are the most common and are highly valued for their purity and delicate flavor. They are typically harvested from swiftlet's nests found in caves and man-made structures.

Red Bird Nests

Redbird nests, also known as blood nests, are rarer and more expensive. Their distinctive color is believed to result from the oxidation of minerals absorbed during the nesting period.

Yellow Bird Nests

Yellowbird nests fall between white and red in terms of rarity and price. They have a unique color and texture, making them a popular choice for gourmet dishes.

Health Benefits of Bird Nest

Bird nests are highly nutritious, offering a wealth of health benefits. They are rich in proteins, amino acids, and essential minerals, which contribute to overall well-being.

Boosts Immunity

The high protein content in bird nests helps strengthen the immune system, making it more effective in fighting off infections.

Enhances Skin Health

Bird nests are often used in beauty treatments due to their collagen content, which is known to improve skin elasticity and reduce signs of aging.

Supports Respiratory Health

Regular consumption of bird nests can help alleviate respiratory issues, such as chronic coughs and asthma, by soothing the respiratory tract.

How Bird Nests are Harvested

Harvesting bird nests is a meticulous process that requires both skill and ethical practices to ensure sustainability. Swiftlets build their nests using saliva, which hardens into a gel-like structure. Harvesters carefully collect these nests without disturbing the birds or their habitat.
Ethical harvesting practices are crucial to maintaining the swiftlet population and ensuring the long-term availability of bird nests. In Singapore, many suppliers adhere to strict guidelines to promote sustainability and animal welfare.

Traditional vs. Modern Bird Nests

The production and consumption of bird nests have evolved significantly over the years. Traditional methods involved harvesting nests from natural caves, a practice that was often dangerous and labor-intensive.
Modern methods have introduced the use of swiftlet houses, where birds can nest in a controlled and safe environment. This shift has not only increased the supply of bird nests but also improved the quality and safety of the product.

Buying Guide for Bird Nests

Selecting high-quality bird nests can be challenging, especially for first-time buyers. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice:

Examine the Texture

Smell the Nest

2024.05.15 08:43 Shinosei No, Aang is not Tibetan.

I’m probably gonna get downvoted for this but I got into a discussion with others about this and I want to put my view forward somewhere.
Aang is not Tibetan. Zuko is not Japanese. Toph is not Chinese. Katara and Sokka are not Native American/Inuit.
They’re just not. The places these races and nationalities are based on do not exist in the Avatar world.
Aang is an Air Nomad. Is his character inspired by Tibetan culture and people? Yes. But he’s not Tibetan.
Zuko is of the Fire Nation. Is Zuko and the Fire Nation based of Japan? Contemporary Japan? No. Imperial Japan? Yes. But the visuals of the FN and FN people’s attire look nothing like Japan and look more like China and SE Asian countries.
You can say these characters are INFLUENCED by real life cultures. But calling them races and nationalities that exist in real life when those nationalities/countries don’t exist in the Avatar world is just nonsensical.
