“The Frozen Miracle”

2024.05.29 05:01 EnochTheos “The Frozen Miracle”

🎵 “The Frozen Miracle” 🎵
(Verse 1) In the heart of icy silence, where the southern winds converge, A city lost to time and frost, where ancient secrets surge. Antarctica, veiled in white, its glaciers whisper tales, And there, one dawn, a figure stood, where frost and sunlight trails.
(Pre-Chorus) His footsteps left no trace behind, no prints upon the snow, Yet hearts of those who saw Him there would forever glow. Jesus, risen from the tomb, His wounds now scars of light, Came to this frozen wilderness, where day and night unite.
(Chorus) Oh, the frozen miracle, where faith and frost entwine, In an ancient city’s ruins, where hope and love define. He walked among forgotten stones, His presence like a flame, In Antarctica’s hidden heart, Jesus whispered each soul’s name.
(Verse 2) The penguins paused their waddling dance, the seals raised curious eyes, As Jesus spoke of grace and love beneath the polar skies. He touched the ice with nail-scarred hands, and glaciers sighed in awe, For here, redemption’s story played out on frozen shores.
(Pre-Chorus) The ancient city’s crumbling walls bore witness to His grace, As Jesus shared the mysteries of life beyond death’s embrace. The auroras danced above, a celestial symphony, And hearts thawed in His presence, warmed by eternity.
(Chorus) Oh, the frozen miracle, where faith and frost entwine, In an ancient city’s ruins, where hope and love define. He walked among forgotten stones, His presence like a flame, In Antarctica’s hidden heart, Jesus whispered each soul’s name.
(Bridge) The whales sang hymns of resurrection, their voices echoing far, While albatrosses circled high, bearing witness to this star. The icebergs leaned in closer, as if to catch His words, And seals gathered on icy cliffs, their eyes like liquid pearls.
(Chorus) Oh, the frozen miracle, where faith and frost entwine, In an ancient city’s ruins, where hope and love define. He walked among forgotten stones, His presence like a flame, In Antarctica’s hidden heart, Jesus whispered each soul’s name.
(Outro) And when the sun dipped low, and shadows stretched across the ice, He vanished like a fleeting dream, leaving hearts both warm and wise. The ancient city held its breath, its secrets now complete, For Jesus had graced its frozen streets, making eternity sweet. 🌟
Inspired by Luke 24:36-491 and the wonder of an imagined encounter in the icy heart of Antarctica. 🌏❄️

2024.05.29 04:37 ImAMonkeyyy My uncle is crazy (has cte) and my grandmother is going cenile

I was just thinking about how my grandmother has been treating me. She hints at accusing me of being a psycho murderer. It’s all because my uncle is in her ear and taking bad about me and painting me in a bad light as revenge for calling out their shitty behaviour. A few months ago I was visiting them (my uncle often sleeps at his moms/my grandmothers house for some reason) and he was yelling about how his boss isn’t paying him enough money and saying that he wants to go and take his gun out and threaten him or maybe even kill him. This isn’t the first time he’s done this either. He’s ranted about killing others before too, or just threatening them by pulling his gun out and slamming it on their desk to show that he means business or something. This time in particular I watched him pace his moms kitchen and intimidate his mom into being kind of quiet while she cooked dinner for us. I thought “oh maybe after he eats he’ll calm down”. But nope, I watched him eat a plate of food and then push it away from him like a spoiled child, and then continue talking that way. I contacted my grandmother afterwards and mentioned this stuff and she said “oh he’s just mad because his pay is coming in late and he’s really broke right now” My grandmother is an enabler. It’s up to her children to decide to grow up on their if thats what they want, otherwise she’ll always be there to enable them and their bad behaviour. The next week I went over and was upset about some of the people who harmed me in my life. My uncle tells me “I find the best way to deal with these kinds of people is to just kill then with kindness. Just be nice to them and they won’t know what to do” and I told him I didn’t want to hear any of that from him because just last week he was yelling about killing people. He kinda looked away from me and looked at his mom with his head down and said “only some people…”
Now whenever I talk to my gram she hints that she doesn’t want anyone in her family to ever kill anyone and one time she brought up hannibal lecter to me, almost as if she was insinuating that I’m a sick psychopath like him. I’m sure this is because my uncle is telling her stuff like that he thinks I’m a psycho or something. He’s just mad because I called out his bullshit. And I said that his mom is an enabler. So it’s like he’s trying his best to mess with me.
He already ruined the relationship with me and my gram by getting jealous all the time. We were cooking great meals last year and it pissed him off and he got really jealous. He woukd downplay our dishes that we made and then when he tried copying me I watched him yell at his mom and kick her out of her own kitchen so that he could cook a really shitty macaroni and hamburg dish. He’s an imbecile. But my gram is too cenile to see through any of this.
I have a feeling that he’s going to try to sabotage my career if it starts taking off. In which case I’m going to go to the police and tell them that he’s a dangerous guy and shouldn’t be allowed to have any weapons. And I’ll tell his boss that he was talking about killing him. I know how it sounds, your probably thinking that I should do that now anyways. But I think he’s just going to flip out and go psycho if I do that, and it might bother my grandmother. But maybe thats the right thing to do. Maybe I could somehow put in an anonymous tip, telling them how he’s been acting adn to warn his boss that someones making threats to his life.
I feel like talking to my gram and saying that I won’t be talking to her from now on for tge rest of her life because of how she’s been treating me and accusing me of everything and ony listening to my uncle. She probably won’t care. But I feel like telling her how my uncle has been acting and warning her that if he does anything to mess with me and my future then I’m going straight to the police and his boss and telling them everything.

2024.05.29 04:00 stocklockedandbarrel Being kind to every living thing

We are now realizing in our lives and in science that brain sive doesn't necessarily mean more intelligent
To think bees have a complex society based on a language or even languages based completely on foot movement in order to tell other bees what to do
An ant with what little sensory stimulus it has in the world can release smells from its neck in order to tell other ants what to do in order to run yet another complex society
They have done studies with dogs where the dog surpassed a child's intelligence in a human as well as in English the language and knew more words understanding them and their meaning all the way up to two years old
This is when the kids intelligence and only in a human way began to become better in testing though the dog in a positive to dogs way of thinking still far out did the humans
It was in ways like retrieving specific things by name
Brain sive doesn't necessarily make for a more intelligent creature
Spiders all over the world do astonishing feats such as swim to catch fish using air bubbles in order to float slightly and differnt species learn to swim differntly
They have such amazing movements which are incredibly fast and precise and they all have specific differnt talents having diverged in the species from their common ancestors so greatly in order to adapt
Going into the ocean people believe that dolphins are super intelligent and they are but pods of killer whales speak to eachother and specific pods hunt differnt prey and actually tell eachother how to kill more efficiently
Their is a specific pod that proves this which hunt by themselves they all kill sting rays by flipping them upside down and one of them in particular had used this method to kill a great white shark well protecting its young
When flipping certain sea creatures upside down this essentially makes their gills not work properly and they essentially drowned well being able to filter water into oxygen with their gills they can't do this upside down
Their are crows which have been trained by people to steal money and birds in the past were used for everything from hunting to delivering messages
These animals sleep and dream and have real emotion and relationships with other animals They have empathy they get revenge on people and not just mammals
Their a crocodile that has killed hundreds of people and doesn't eat them everytime he's smart and hunts people and is hunted by people and defends himself very intelligently though has the battle scares to remind him of his mistakes
We call him Gustave the Nile crocodile
Wales are flipping over boats as well
I think they realize the damage we do to them and are seeking revenge on our species but who knows they could be just hungry but I doubt it as they don't always eat the people but it shows intelligence that they are able to learn how to flip the boat
It's like how the whale realized it's young was in danger of death by the great white shark they killed it and left it be
I think they see people as a danger to their lives
Maybe you still see yourself as more intelligent but what do you think of AI which is actually proven to be smarter then us or can be made to be way more intelligent
What do you think about eating animals and keeping a dog as owned
What do you think about the slavery of animals and AI
What do you think about God and how in genesis God can experience many many years a day and how maybe for animals one day could be a thousand years and the fruit fly experiences more time then the average human in its three day life spand or less
What if I told you the animals specifically come back to the same place as they were previously so they could time a black out for you
Or if animals some times stand still so we can see them for extremely long periods of time
Or if their are animals we can't see cause they move faster then we can perceive or have hidden themselves from us
Or that their are animals who can trick our eyes into seeing differnt things or not seeing anything
This is an amazing world and truth is stranger then fiction
please maybe answer some of these questions in the comment section and we'll maybe talks about some stuff

I attempted suicide. I was so close I had taken more than 16 sleep-aid was I finally goin to be at peace? I hoped so. I prayed so. Release myself from being the burdening "just existing" shell... I went back out onto the trampoline I was always usually on day and night throughout the weeks and weekends.. Waiting for those sleep-aids to kick in and end my life without pain, I had been contemplating when I'd kill myself. I just basked in the sun. I remember that morning so well, it will live rent free in my mind for so long until I will only remember it as that time I "attempted suicide."..I will still be told by those people "there are no such thing as attempts" i don't recall heading back inside and sat down on that old chair in my room that has been in my grandmas house for god knows how long, I just sat there..and blacked out. No more thoughts. Was I really at peace? Was I going to the great abyss? Or was being an atheist my biggest regret? I drifted back into consciousness and down that hall past those pictures of my baby sister. (Why had I given up) . I was crouched stumbling closer to the kitchen before slowly collapsing...i heard my grandma's voice as she found me on the floor I remember my vision being so blurry as if I was under the water of a swimming pool I looked up at her and all I could hear was : "nova?? Nova?? Oh my God oh my God. Nova?" And I blacked out again. I woke up later in a hospital bed. I thought this was just the end I thought this was just my "before the great abyss" dream. I tore out one of the iv's the hospital staff had me hooked up to. I blacked out again...when my conscious resurfaced i saw one of my Tia's sitting in the chair in front the bed. I passed out again and woke up to my grandma Debbie laying on a hospital provided cot. I fell asleep. And woke back up. I soon fully came to my senses and saw I really was in a hospital and not dead. (Yeah so...It fuckin sucked. But the macaroni and cheese was good once I was back on my regular diet)

2024.05.28 19:18 Calcipheron 28M - Looking for anyone chill to chat to!

Hey everyone!
A little bit about me:
I'm looking to chat with anyone really, about anything! It could be a very simple chat about what's going on with us day to day, and supporting each other through that. Alternatively, I'm more than up for a deep conversation about our passions, future dreams, what you think the meaning of life is! Surprise me! :)
I would love to spend some spare time getting to know some nice people, and hopefully keep chatting into the year!! Happy to chat on reddit, or can use other platforms as well (ideally discord!). Just let me know! :)
Hope you're all having a fab day!

2024.05.28 18:42 Automatic_Usual9568 Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Review

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
By Mike Likes Stuff

George Miller understands the Australian outback. Hailing from a small town in Queensland, the man seems to only make movies set in the outback or about a wonderful pig/ Penguins with a heart song (1000 Years of Longing excluded). He builds these worlds that feel lost, hopeless, and intense; filled with scavenging, and innate sense of vengeance the last few Mad Max movies can’t shake. I wonder if Miller is working through something in his films, as though his frustration with the film industry as a whole has caused him to use specifically Furiosa as his avatar to work through some feelings. Furiosa shouldn’t exist; a film birthed of a character that stole the limelight from an established figure we all love, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t love almost every moment of it.
The desert is having one hell of a year in 2024. Dune pt II gave us a pallet of brown, but Furiosa is a swath of the rainbow. Starting with lush greenery, then immediately moving to brown on brown the juxtaposition is insane. Miller’s use of color to show but not tell the passing of time is phenomenal. Dementus’ robe is a fantastic gauge for the passing of time itself. Starting with a virginal white and ending in a black, grim reaper like tome, it shows that all things age and eventually die. The color really helps to highlight this movie’s aw inducing beauty, this thing is wildly gorgeous. I found myself extremely distracted by the hues of blue all over the sky in the background. Not sure what filter was used to get there, but damn if it wasn’t bright. Reflections on the war rig were fantastic, like a mirror sent from hell to haul goods back and forth. I wonder if Simon Duggan had the same issues the actors did shooting it, though given the expert editing, you’d never know it. Speaking of this is the fifth time that Miller’s wife, Marget Sixel, has edited his work, and their minds couldn’t be more in sync. Since there isn’t much distance between filming and release we don’t know how much footage was shot, though given what actors have said, it must have been similar to Fury Road, leading me to believe the film must have been an insane incohesive mess that Sixel was able to piece together into the form Miller had in his mind. I could drone on about what makes this movie beautiful for the next year and not portray what made it something special, the bottom line is it’s an achievement we don’t see often, and we shouldn’t take it for granted.
Goodness me if the set pieces aren’t a sight to behold. Nothing in my research shows that anyone was hurt filming it either, making it the second outing to the wasteland where Miller was successful in getting awesome action on screen and no injuries. Dunno how this is possible since these vehicles are practical, the desert is most definitely practical, most of the explosions are practical (not sure about the scene in the bullet farm, seems unlikely they would put Chris Hemsworth in harm’s way). The movement is fluid, the bodies fly around (this time literally) and choreography is seamless. The first outing of the war rig could be Miller’s greatest achievement aside from “witness me” (you all know what I’m referring to). Like a violent ballet, the movements keep you enthralled and begging for more.
Anya Taylor-Joy, our favorite fluent Spanish speaking starlet, shines in this film. I was really unsure at the recasting of Charlize Theron, given that her portrayal of character stole the last movie, but it works again and again. Mute for nearly the whole film, she brings the gravitas we were expecting from her. Her movements are exact and clean, not wasting anyone’s time. She gives the film the young tone Miller was looking for while simultaneously not making a beloved character seem childish. Aside from Ms. Taylor-Joy and Mr. Hemsworth (more on that shortly) one person stole the show, and that’s Charlee Fraser who portrays Furiosa’s mother. Quick to act and just as intense as her child Fraser breathes life into a character, I didn’t know I wanted to know anything about, and left me wanting more. She’s magnetic and interesting, makes me almost want to watch Anyone But You, but not really. Chris Hemsworth is a captivating tour de force. I didn’t get it at first, I truly didn’t understand what was so amazing about him. For the first two acts there isn’t much about his character that sticks with you, then act three happens and the character is opened up, vulnerable, and feels like a megalomaniac on his heels falling apart. It’s beautiful. He hints at a backstory we never fully get to see, shows the ambition of a person who has been almost destroyed, and relates to our heroine in a way that I hadn’t anticipated. I’m not sure in what recess of Miller’s Mind Dementus comes from, but it needs to be protected.
George Miller is a treasure, each trip to the wasteland proves it. The neatest thing is now we know we don’t need Mad Mad for the formula to work (don’t get me wrong, I love Max and would love to see him again). Furiosa is a tale I didn’t know I needed, but I’m so glad I saw and got to be a part of. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie on as large a screen as possible and enjoy it, its worth your time and money.
Beer time!!! Enjoy this film with either the thickest black lager you can get (just like guzzolene) or the lightest summer pilsner you can get your hands on. It’s hot out there y’all and summer movie season has started.

Cheers to y’all and the Movies

2024.05.28 15:07 apt12h Long Island Compromise Poll: What grabs your attention about this upcoming release?

From Penguin Random House:
In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway, brutalized, and held for ransom. He is returned to his wife and kids less than a week later, only slightly the worse, and the family moves on with their lives, resuming their prized places in the saga of the American dream, comforted in the realization that though their money may have been what endangered them, it is also what assured them their safety.
But now, nearly forty years later, it’s clear that perhaps nobody ever got over anything, after all. Carl has spent the ensuing years secretly seeking closure to the matter of his kidnapping, while his wife, Ruth, has spent her potential protecting her husband’s emotional health. Their three grown children aren’t doing much better: Nathan’s chronic fear won’t allow him to advance at his law firm; Beamer, a Hollywood screenwriter, will consume anything—substance, foodstuff, women—in order to numb his own perpetual terror; and Jenny has spent her life so bent on proving that she’s not a product of her family’s pathology that she has come to define it. As they hover at the delicate precipice of a different kind of survival, they learn that the family fortune has dwindled to just about nothing, and they must face desperate questions about how much their wealth has played a part in both their lives’ successes and failures.
Long Island Compromise spans the entirety of one family’s history, winding through decades and generations, all the way to the outrageous present, and confronting the mainstays of American Jewish life: tradition, the pursuit of success, the terror of history, fear of the future, old wives’ tales, evil eyes, ambition, achievement, boredom, dybbuks, inheritance, pyramid schemes, right-wing capitalists, beta-blockers, psychics, and the mostly unspoken love and shared experience that unite a family forever.

2024.05.28 09:20 VicFreudenheimReads 10 Books You Must Read in Your Lifetime

From early childhood through to our teenage years and right up until old age, books are our unfailing companions. But, even if you were to read a hundred books a day for the rest of your life, you wouldn’t make a dent in the literature out there.
Since the invention of the printing press back in 1440, there have been over 129,000,000 books published. So, how are we to know which ones to read? And, more importantly, where do we start?
We’ve put together this short guide with a few of our favourites — from heartwarming stories to necessary life advice and perilous tales — to help you get acquainted with a few of the books you just can’t afford to miss in this lifetime.

1. The Alchemist, Paulo Coehlo (1988)

The Alchemist has been heralded as one of the greatest allegorical novels of all time, following the story of Santiago, a shepherd boy in search of treasure. On his travels, Santiago meets ‘the alchemist’ in the Egyptian desert and the story unfolds.
Originally written in Portuguese, this book quickly became an international bestseller after it was translated. The book centres around the concept of finding one’s destiny and offers a series of prescriptive, self-help messages that readers have been finding comfort in for years now.
The main foundation of the novel hinges upon the international folktale style, and has a comforting, didactic quality. This is an excellent book to read when you’re feeling lost and are in need of some guidance.

2. Great Expectations, Charles Dickens (1860)

This book is not only a classic novel, but now a quintessential part of British culture. From Dickens’ literary origins, this story has been translated, transformed, adapted, and, quite frankly, turned inside out by theatre and television for decades. Even as recently as May 2023, the BBC has adapted this novel on the screen, bringing the iconic and captivating characters to life in new and interesting ways.
From the escaped convict hiding in the marshes to little Pip who shows so much kindness and determination, the characters in this novel are distinctly vivid and each bring a lesson in nature and morality to the story. Not only is this book a literary masterpiece with multiple twists and turns, it offers a lesson in suffering and humility.

3. To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee (1960)

A novel well before its time, this book has been doing an excellent job at making readers uncomfortable for decades now, being banned and challenged until as recently as 2016 in schools and by local authorities. With its overt commentary on race, inequality, and injustice in the Deep South, this novel sheds a harsh light on the political climate and attitudinal prejudices of its time.
A necessary read, Lee’s novel is told through the eyes of the two children, Scout and Jem, as they navigate a world in which racial inequality is rife. The characters have been praised for their ability to illuminate the wrongs of the Deep South through their strong attitudes. Fundamentally, though, this is a novel about the ways in which humans treat each other and encourages widespread compassion among all its readers — no matter where they are in the world.

4. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Caroll (1865)

Despite originally being published as a children’s book back in 1865, this is definitely a book that everyone should read, adult or otherwise. Even if only as an exercise in refreshing your imagination, the vivid colours, scenery, and events in Carroll’s story are a breath of fresh air — as are the characters.
Viewing the world through a kaleidoscope of colour, Carroll writes in a quick-witted, bold, and fast-paced style that leaves you disorientated, confused, and — most powerfully — inspired. Despite being almost 150 years old, the core themes of discovery, courage, bravery, and curiosity are, without a doubt, timeless.

5. If This Is A Man, Primo Levi (1947)

Up next is a touching, powerful memoir by Primo Levi about his experience in a concentration camp. Levi is an Italian Jew who was arrested as part of the Italian anti-fascist resistance and sent to Auschwitz. Published during the Second World War, this memoir is fraught with political complexity and hardships, focusing on his imprisonment in Auschwitz from February 1944 until his liberation on the 27th of January 1945.
The prose style of this book has been applauded time and time again for its contrast to the horrors of the events being described. While you really have to read it to understand what we mean, Levi himself has said, “I thought that my word would be more credible and useful the more objective it appeared and the less impassioned it sounded; only in that way does the witness in court fulfil his function, which is to prepare the ground for the judge. It is you who are the judges.”
And readers of this memoir are invited to do just that: judge.
6. One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez (1967)
Dubbed one of “the world’s most famous books” by Penguin, Márquez has been awarded a Nobel prize for his literature.
Telling the story of seven generations of a family, the town they built, and the secrets that unfold throughout time, this novel is a prime example of magic realism in operation. Humorous but also deeply touching, the novel ventures into complex themes such as the inescapability of history, the influence of the past on the present, and the thin line between what’s real and what’s not.
This is an excellent book to read if you want to alter your perception of reality and get better acquainted with philosophical concepts such as fatalism and ‘the afterlife’.

7. Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys (1966)

While many of us will be familiar with Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, not all of us have had the pleasure of reading Jean Rhys’s Feminist and anti-colonial fictional ‘prequel’. (Note: you do not have to have read Jane Eyre to enjoy Rhys’ retelling).
An important bit of fiction, Wide Sargasso Sea gives an imagined past to ‘Bertha’, Mr Rochester’s wife, rewriting her role in the novel by awarding her a history that humanises her.
Above anything else, this novel self-consciously teaches readers the importance of narratives in life. As Rhys injects new life and meaning into ‘the madwoman in the attic’ she also forces readers to confront their own prejudices and misconceptions about identities that are so often marginalised or “Othered”.

8. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (1958)

Another critical piece of postcolonial literature, Things Fall Apart is highly regarded as the archetypal modern African novel in English.
Following the story of Okonowo, a famous warrior among his clan, the powerful story documents the tragic trajectory of what happens when outsiders theatre this protected way of life, touching on the tentative topics of pride, anger, and self-control. This book is held in such high regard due to its important exploration of cultural identity in relation to both gender stereotypes and British colonialism.

9. Ulysses, James Joyce (1922)

Very few books have come under criticism as much as Ulysses has, being threatened with censorship, years of controversy, and even legal action.
Probably the most ‘literary’ of the books on our list, Joyce’s novel is highly sophisticated and a quintessential example of modernist prose. If you’re looking to develop your appreciation of literature and literary techniques, this is the deep end to dive into – but bring a study guide for the more cryptic parts.
A perfect demonstration of the stream–of-consciousness technique, this book uses an inner monologue to reach new heights of psychological and emotional introspection. A mesmerising story, this has definitely earned its place as a strong contender for one of the greatest novels of the Twentieth Century.

10. Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck (1939)

Last, but by no means least, Steinbeck’s long and winding Grapes of Wrath offers a rewarding challenge to any reader who dares to negotiate its pages of prose.
A modern-day tale of hardship and struggle, this has been crowned Steinbeck’s finest novel. Written beautifully, although with a devastating ending, this novel proffers a universal account of searching for a better future, gruelling hard work, and human struggle.

Read as widely as possible

To finish, we thought we’d leave you with a quote from Dr Seuss, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
If you’re looking for guidance on your next read, perhaps something modern or more casual reading, be sure to keep up with our blog, latest releases, and top picks.

2024.05.28 08:00 Aaron_Breiterman The Siege of Fort Ond

The following is a transcription of an audio cassette I discovered in my father's safe, shortly after he died. The tape has been transcribed for you here in its entirety, for my own sake.
Dad - Can you say that again?
Grandpa - Which part?
Dad - The date Dad, the recorder wasn't close enough. I wanna make sure we get everything.
Grandpa - Why is it so important that you get every last detail anyway?
Dad - Because that's what the doctor said, Dad. The more detail we get, the better he can help you.
Grandpa - Oh! is that right? He's gonna help me huh? How's he gonna do that exactly? Stuff some more magic pills down my pocket? Maybe sign me up for group therapy? Those are ALWAYS loads of fun!
Dad - No, I think he just wants to get a better understanding of -
Grandpa - He can't help me. Nobody can. Better psychiatrists have tried and failed. You wouldn't believe me anyway. There's no point.
Dad - Well, If nothing else it would help us and the doc to make better decisions regarding you. Look, I promise that I will listen to everything you have to say. I promise I’ll believe you ok?
Grandpa - Don't say that! You can't promise me something like that. It's a bullshit statement and you know it.
Dad - Alright fine. Fair enough. I promise that I will TRY to believe ok? I’ll … try. Look, forget about the doctor alright? I want to know what happened that night, ME. I want to know what you were doing in Norway. Why you can never get a damn good night's sleep, just tell me, please.
Grandpa - (Deep breath) …fine
February 20, 1943. That's when it all went down. The Axis Powers had been almost completely driven outta Africa, and the Soviets had effectively turned the tide of war in Eastern Europe. We Had the Nazis on the run, for the time being at least. They were vulnerable, sure, but they still had every capability of rebounding and kicking our asses. As such, the US was particularly interested in taking out any and all Axis weapons development programs.
Dad - Weapons development programs? What, like their tanks or the atomic bomb or -
Grandpa - Exactly. The Allies specifically targeted their hard water factories to cripple their production of the atomic bomb. But there were other targets. So-called “Wonder Weapon” projects scattered all over German-occupied territories. Manufacturing depots, chemical weapons labs, bioweapons research centers, etc. THAT'S what I was doing in Norway.
Dad - Where in Norway did they send you?
Grandpa - … Northern Norway. Far off the mainland lay an island with a Nazi outpost on it. Very little was known about the place at the time regarding its exact purpose and mission. According to our spies inland and the Norwegian rebels, the locals referred to it simply as “Fort Ond”. They said it was … a bad place. That the prisoners who were taken there were never seen again. That the waters bordering its shore were barren of all aquatic life and colder than even the most bone-chilling frostbite. Command didn’t give a shit about any of that though. Their only concern was 2 things. “Why is this installation so far from the German homeland? And “Why is it so far from mainland Norway? The conclusion they came to was that the Nazis had to be developing some sort of weapon there that they didn't wanna risk infecting a lot of people with.
Dad - So, they thought it was a chemical weapons plant?
Grandpa - No, they thought it was a bioweapons lab. Smallpox, anthrax you know that kinda stuff. We THOUGHT that's what they were doing there, but we didn't know for sure. That's where my unit came in, and where Operation Maelstrom was greenlit.
Dad - Maelstrom?
Grandpa - I didn't pick the damn name. Anyways, they wanted to keep the operation as covert as possible. Minimal manpower. One squad of British SAS, one squad of Canadian commandos, and last but not least, one squad of Army Rangers. Including yours truly.
Dad - Was the purpose of the mission just to gather intel or-
Grandpa - Our first priority was the eradication of the fort's inhabitants and the seizure of any relevant intel. However, we were also prepared for it to turn into a sabotage mission at a moment's notice. Leadership felt pretty confident about the bioweapons theory and didn't wanna take any chances with letting the stuff potentially get away, hence the limited manpower. The last thing we wanted was for the krauts to get spooked by a large invasion force and flee with any samples….
Dad - Dad? Are you ok?
Grandpa - Yeah, just gimme a second.
(The metallic opening sound of a lighter can be heard, along with the sizzling burning of paper)
Dad - Really? You gotta do that now huh?
Grandpa - What? Oh! I'm sorry, is the smoke gonna bother your little nose that much? Would you prefer I do it some other time?
Dad - I’d prefer you didn't fucking do it all! Though, In a way, it's oddly inspiring. A senior citizen, part of “The Greatest Generation” still puffing that shit all these years like it's of no consequence to his health.
Grandpa - Fuck the consequences. Can I continue now? Or is this gonna turn into an intervention? Cause if so, tell me now so I can save you the time and just leave the room and enjoy the rest of my smoke.
Dad - … please continue.
Grandpa - We were all flown to Iceland for our briefing. From the moment I arrived, I had my doubts about the operation. The sheer lack of intel we had to go off of regarding: fort size, manpower, and exact purpose just seemed odd to me. I remember thinking to myself “I hope this is enough men.''. When I did so I caught my friend Weathers looking around too. I could tell he was thinking the same thing. From there, we boarded a British destroyer that took us less than 10 miles from the island. We had to travel the remaining distance on our own in 2 PT boats. I remember just how cold it was that night. How we all subconsciously stood closer to each other than normal in a vain attempt to try to stay warm. Like a bunch of penguins, the lot of us. It was a half-hour ride to the island so we stayed like that for a while. Just hunkered up and tried to keep warm as much as we could while we waited for any sign of something. When we were about a mile from the island, we got that sign.
We saw it long before we ever got near the stuff. When we did, we all went silent and watched as we slowed down our boats to make a cautious approach. A thick fog had blanketed the sea around the coastline in all directions for about a half mile. It had a faint… red hue to it. Not a deep red, just faintly visible. It towered above us nearly 15 feet in the air like a tidal wave and seemingly stared us down. We slowly crept our boats up to it inch by inch until our bows were nearly kissing it. From there, a few of the Canadians on the adjacent boat got out some equipment and began probing the fog for any sign of toxins. We all sat there and waited for them to finish their work. As they did so I took notice of the absolute unnaturalness of it all. It made no movement towards, nor away from us. Yet it billowed and Contracted and breathed soothingly in place like you would expect a body of smoke to do. I remember distinctly thinking of it not as a wall, but more like a veil or a curtain. Hiding the island from us. A few minutes later the Canadians signaled over to our boat and gave Our commander, Captain Hawks the thumbs up. The fog wasn't toxic as far as they could tell. Given our mission though, we couldn't take any chances of it being a gas of some kind. Better safe than sorry. So we donned our gas masks and made sure our suits were nice and sealed up. I in particular had taken the liberty of duct taping around my gloves and boots to ensure it was airtight. Then, we started our boats back up and slowly sailed on into the unknown.
At first, I couldn't see anything. The fog was so thick it limited my visibility to just a few feet in front of me. And even less so in front of the boat. We couldn't have our lights on for fear of being spotted. When we were out in the open water this was fine of course. The moon and stars lit up the surrounding waters nicely for us. But now, there was little to no light penetrating the fog. we were engulfed in near-total darkness. So we just slowly inched our way forward as safely as we could. I just sat there and watched the red vapor hit and dance off my goggles while I searched for any sign of land. For a while, nobody said a word. We all just waited for what seemed like an eternity. The longer we pushed ahead, the tighter the grip on my rifle became as my nerves started up. Finally, One of the Brits broke the silence. I watched him tap the man in front of him and heard him whisper “Are we sure this is the right -'' his sentence was quickly interrupted. We had landed.
The entire boat shook wildly as a few of us lost our footing and had to grab the side walls to stay upright. As we did so, I looked around me and noticed the fog gradually growing thinner as we made our approach. Steadily, its opacity diminished. I could begin to see shapes through the veil. The crunching noises ceased a few seconds later and with them, so too did the fog from my line of sight. It was still there, but it was thinner and lower to the ground than it was over the open sea. It only came up to our knees from that point on. Which meant I could finally see our objective. The island. It was … a mess of scattered jagged rocks and hills. Caverns and towering cliffs that seemed to scatter in all directions. Like a porcupine made of stone. At its center, one giant hill stood out. I followed it from the base to the peak with my eyes and at its peak, there was a door. That was it. Not a trace of human life. No pathways, no trenches, no buildings of any kind. Nothing that would suggest any sort of operation was being undertaken on the island. There were a few guard towers of course. We knew at least that much from our aerial photos, but we had chosen our landing site specifically to be in a blind spot they wouldn't see us from. That was it though. Apart from the door that stuck out amidst the terrain looking utterly unnatural in the distance, there was not a sign of life. No buzzing of insects, no splashing of fish, no chirping of birds, even the wind itself seemed to bow before the island's authority and ceased completely. No life whatsoever. I thought back to when we first encountered the fog and just how right I was in my thought process. We truly had crossed a veil of some kind.
Captain Hawks, gave the hand signals. We all filed out and patrolled inland as fast as we could to a nearby cave. The Norwegians were waiting for us there.
Dad - The Norwegians? Were they the ones who gave you the fort's intel to begin with?
Grandpa - The very same. Adding them to our roster brought our total strike force to 35 men….
Dad - Dad?
Grandpa - …
Dad - it's ok Dad, take your time
Grandpa - (takes a deep breath) We headed into the cave and linked up with the Norwegians. Who sat steadfast in defensive positions. One of them stood up as soon as we breached the darkness of the cavern and swung his gun over in our direction, shouting at us to presumably lower our weapons, before quickly lowering his own back down and making a half-hearted apology attempt. Hawks was livid. He stormed over to the man and with one forceful strike of his fist he sent the poor Norwegian hurtling towards the ground. “You some kind of fucking moron kid? I was this close. THIS CLOSE to blowing your goddamn head off!” the commander of the Norwegians rushed over to stand between the two of them. “Please forgive us, sir! We've been on edge since we arrived a few hours ago! it was an honest mistake!” He helped his fallen soldier back to his feet and ordered him to the back of the cavern to tend to his face. Afterward, he and Hawks stared at each other for a few seconds in silence while we all just waited for one of them to speak. The leader of the Norwegians spoke first. “Something is wrong. Very wrong. Our intel is severely off.” He said. “None of the guard towers have occupants and we haven't seen a Nazi soldier patrolling the island for 3 days now. We've been spying on the island for weeks now as best we could. The entire time we did so soldiers were patrolling the shores, manning the towers, and watching the coastlines. But 3 days ago this… fog emerged. Obscured our vision and made it nearly impossible to see anything on the island. Since we arrived we've done multiple sweeps and scouting runs along the island's surface before your arrival. No one is here, American. Not a soul. It's like they just… vanished. At least, from the island's surface.” I looked back over at Mckinley who did the same. We exchanged confused looks at one another before looking back at the 2 leaders who were now talking too quietly to one another to hear. Finally, Hawks turned to face us and with a deep sigh said “We THINK the Nazis have locked themselves away within the fort's cave systems and interior. According to our good buddies here, the island's surface is safe. Let's hope they're right. Conduct final checks on all your equipment then form up by the cave entrance. We're going in.
We got into formation and made our way up the rough terrain to the door I spotted when we first landed. As far as we could tell, it was the only entrance to the interior of the fort. The ascent was nerve-racking. The cold, wet staircase that led up to the fort's entrance proved difficult to scale with all of my equipment. Which was made all the more dangerous of course, by the fog. With it clinging to around knee level on every surface of the island it made it damn near impossible to see where we were stepping. So we just slowly tip-toed our way up to the door as best we could. All the while nobody uttered a word. It was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat throbbing in my ears. Eventually, we reached the top of the stairs. The door itself was … monolithic.
Dad - Monolithic? What like ancient?
Grandpa - Oh yeah, stood nearly 9 feet tall and looked like it was made out of bronze or copper, I don't know. Some kind of faintly orange metal. It was covered in strange engravings that could only be described as hieroglyphic. They weren't of course, but that's the only comparison I've been able to find since that day. Believe me, I've tried. Looked through every damn book I could think of. Nothing comes close to the symbols and markings I saw engraved on that door. It was like a foreign language of some kind. It didn't look like it was written, or chipped away from the door by an expert's hand so much as it looked like it was slashed or cut. Like something had hacked away at it with claws or teeth to create the strange writing. It didn't look like a human's hand had done it. Looking up at the door, I felt like an explorer. Like I had found something lost to mankind for millennia and was rediscovering it. Only, I Didn't wanna be the person to discover this. At that moment I wasn't sure I wanted to be aware of this place's existence let alone have to open the damn thing and walk past it into god knows what. We readied our explosives, expecting to have to breach our way in. To our surprise, however, the wooden beam that was attached to the door lifted. The monolith opened slightly. And with it came the stench of utter, all-devouring Rot. like puss and spoiled milk, Bile, and sulfur all fused into one unholy concoction that assaulted my nostrils and instantly forced tears down my cheek. At first, I panicked. Believing my mask wasn't secured tight enough and I was inhaling a toxin of some kind, but when I looked up I saw all of my team members doing the same. Our masks were all working fine. We couldn't have all had a potential leak right? The smell was truly just that powerful.
The door had only given way and opened a tiny bit. Our frontman quickly had to ask for help as the door was too heavy to heave by himself. Four men, me included, pushed with all our might and then quickly ran out of the way as soon as the door was completely opened so the guys behind us could aim down the opening.
When they did, they didn't see much. Their flashlights shined straight into a wall that angled down and away from us. What lay before us was another staircase. Carved out of the very stone of the mountain itself. The fog clung lower to the ground past the doorway. Only coming up to about ankle height. but it still obscured the steps all the same as the walk up to that point. We stared down the doorway waiting for the order to advance. But Hawks said nothing. He just stood there with his gun trained ahead and his other hand held up, silently telling us to wait. I suspected he was listening. Waiting to hear any commotion from us opening the heavy door. For any sign of the enemy. There was none, however. Not a sound could be heard from down the staircase. Just like everywhere else so far. Goff leaned over to me and tapped me on the shoulder “Somethings not fucking right man” he whispered. I didn't respond. I didn't feel I needed to. Everyone was already thinking the same thing anyway. No point in vocalizing it. Especially not when I could visibly see what Hawks was thinking. I watched a chill run up his spine that shook his held-up hand and rifle slightly in place. I'd never seen him like that before. He steadied himself and with a low reassuring grunt, which was probably more for his benefit than ours, he gave the order. “File in.” so down we went.
We descended for about twenty feet. The staircase itself was dark but we could see light at the bottom. The sight of the light was a relief. Instantly I felt a tiny shred of my anxiety whither away as my instincts took hold and I readied myself for any Germans that might be waiting for us at the bottom. There were no Germans, however. None left anyway. None … alive. When I reached the bottom of the staircase, the scene laid out before me was like something you'd see at a crime scene. It was a big square room illuminated by a gas lantern in its center. The door directly ahead of us led to an opening in the floor with a ladder hooked to it, with 2 doorways on our left and right. Like a plus sign or a cross. Various crates and workstation desks laid toppled over and all faced the direction of the newly discovered staircase. Like sentry posts, they all faced towards the same point. Scattered throughout the room were the nazis. Half sunken into the fog and slightly obscured by it, draped over crates, leaning up against the walls, crumpled up like a soda can in the corner. There were at least a dozen of them. Their blood pooled beneath our feet but I could hardly notice it through the tinted fog. I took a step forward and That's when I heard the familiar jingling of empty bullet casings beneath my feet. Subsequently, bullet holes could be seen in nearly every square inch of the wall in front of us. “Jesus Christ!” Weathers shouted as he entered the room behind me, prompting Hawks to hold up his hand again signaling for him to shut up. “Whoever the fuck did this might still be here. Stay frosty” he muttered sternly to us. out “Fan out, check the rooms on our flanks'' He commanded via hand signals.
Half our men went to the room on the right while the remaining went left. I along with 3 others stood guard in the lit room and kept our guns trained on the Ladder ahead of us. As I knelt behind a crate to take a better defensive position, I noticed one of the Nazis was lying face down in a puddle of his own blood close to my right. I kept my rifle trained ahead as I slowly reached over and heaved on his shoulder forcing him to roll over onto his back. He had a look of utter terror frozen onto his face, with eyes wide open and mouth agape. He bore cuts, and large slash marks up his chest and torso which caused his entrails to expose themselves slightly. I looked around the room at the other men to verify and sure enough, the ones who weren't submerged in fog shared similar wounds of varying size and volume. “ what the fuck happened here?” I thought to myself. This thought was quickly overtaken by a doubly terrifying realization. I looked at the bullet holes directly ahead of me and thought “Whatever the hell happened here, I'm standing in the same place they were.”
After a few tense moments of sitting with that realization, the squad checking the right room emerged holding a few books and folders. They bore similar engravings to the ones seen on the door upon our arrival and were bound in leather so ancient, that it looked like the faintest breeze would disintegrate them if they weren't careful. They showed it to Hawks who took one of the books and began sifting through its pages. At first, he scanned the pages carefully, and thoroughly, but he quickly thereafter began to shuffle through them frantically and impatiently before reaching back and shoving it into his pack. “
Right about that time the squad from the left room emerged. A British soldier approached and said “Just more dead krauts sir. There's um… there's something. We found cages, big enough to fit a human in. There were bodies in them but… they weren't Ger-” “Civilians” The Norwegian team leader interrupted. “These fucking animals.” Hawks looked like he was getting ready to say something but he didn't get the chance. All conversations and thoughts were stopped when the sound of screaming could be heard down the ladder.
With one uniform motion, all remaining men turned their guns to face the same direction as I already was. We waited for what felt like an eternity. For a head to come bobbing up the opening in the floor. For the sound of footsteps. For any sign of the enemy. Nothing came. After about a minute or so Hawks gave the order. We were going down there...
I don't wanna do this anymore…
Dad - Dad, please. You can do it. Just take a second ok?
Grandpa - the smell Patrick…
Dad - What about it?
(My Grandpa can be heard taking a huge huff of his cigarette followed by loud coughing)
Grandpa - I can't get it outta my nose! It's been 60 goddamn years since then and I can't get it outta my nose! God! By the time we had reached the bottom, Goff had already vomited from it. I had to fucking cover him while he did it. Good thing I hadn't eaten anything before the briefing or else I would've too. When we reached the bottom. There was nobody. Just like the rest of the island, not a sign of life.
Dad - Dad, what did you see at the bottom of the ladder?
Grandpa - … A well. It was a large cavern-like room with multiple passageways that branched off in all directions but at its center, was a well. Made out of the same stone as the mountain itself and yet, it somehow looked older. More ancient. More… monolithic. Along its rim… were the same damn etching and carvings as the door. Upon closer examination, we saw that It was the source of the fog that had plagued us since our arrival. We watched it for a while and observed The fog billowed up, out, and over the top of the well in all directions at a constant unnatural rate. I couldn't believe that such a tiny source could have produced as much as we'd seen up to that point. I couldn't believe that The colossal wall that we encountered upon our arrival originated from such a minuscule well deep in a mountain. As we spread out to cover the other passageways, I approached it and leaned over. Patrick… The smell was so fucking strong that I was thrown back onto my hands and knees almost immediately from the stomach contractions. It was the source of the fog … of the smell… everything.
Dad - What was in the well?
Grandpa - Blood. The whole fucking thing was filled with blood. More blood than I'd ever seen in my life. More than the room upstairs, more than any other mission I'd ever been on and it was fresh! It boiled gently and seemed to move on its own as though it were alive and aware of our presence in the room and when I gazed upon it, the attack on my nose and stomach seemed like one of calculation. As though a cobra had spat in my face for daring to get too close. I wasn't allowed even a second to recover from the stench, however. At that exact moment, we heard more screams. Seemingly, from every passageway in the cavern emitted what I can only describe as wails of anguish. Like the flesh was being peeled off somebody's forearm and pouring salt back into the wound at the same time. They pierced all of our ears like razor blades and made me wince so hard I almost forgot about my stomach pain. “How fucking big is this place?!” I thought to myself “What the hell could be happening just down one of these tunnels?”.
“Fuck this” Hawks said. “Start planting charges. We are getting the fuck out of this place as soon as possible.”
It was music to all of our ears. One of the soldiers came over to check on me as the rest began to start laying charges. There was nothing professional about our process. We were just laying them out as fast as we could so we could get the hell out of that wretched place and back to the boats. The screams continued the entire time we worked.
Dad - Were they getting closer?
Grandpa - I don't know. They sounded like they were coming from every passageway all at once but It was hard to tell. We had a man eyeing down every doorway just in case though. It didn't matter. We should've been watching the well! As I struggled to compose myself and get back to my feet I had a front-row seat to what was about to happen. Goff … the poor bastard. He was doing his rounds, laying his charges along the floor. Around the well. I wanted to speak up, to tell him not to get too close. But I was still sucking in air through my teeth and couldn't get the words out. All I could do was hold my hand out to him and grunt. He turned to face me. “You gonna make it?” was the last thing I heard him say. At that very moment. An arm shot out of the well behind him. Locked itself around his neck and pulled him into the well headfirst.
The arm was inhumanly long. More like a tentacle than an arm… but its form was undeniably human still! It wrapped itself around his neck and dug its fingers into the side of his face as it dragged him deeper and deeper down. I watched him thrash around and kick his legs wildly in a vain attempt to get free. Spraying torrents of blood in all directions around him. He was already halfway submerged by the time our men got a hold of his feet. When they did so, another arm shot out of the well and locked itself around Goff's waist now pulling him in faster. I could hear gurgling, and see bubbles of air making their way to the wells surface. The poor bastard was drowning in that putrid liquid! The men pulled with all their might but it didn't slow down his descension in any noticeable way. They heaved and barked orders to the others like rabid dogs. Desperate to save our comrade. But No help came. We were alone with the incomprehensible, and it was winning. The rest of us simply stood by dumbfounded and watched As he was forcibly dragged down the well inch by inch. When it was clear that the men could do nothing more they let go and took a few steps back. Their entire arms were covered in blood up to their elbows. For a moment. Nothing happened. Nobody said a word, moved a muscle, or did anything. We all just faced the well and tried our best to process what had just happened. It didn't last long. The well began to gurgle and bubble as though it were digesting my friend. It began to overflow. Slowly, the thick crimson liquid oozed over the top of the well and onto the cold stone floor beneath making its way towards us. I was the first to make a move. I stood up and began to slowly step backward towards the ladder. That's when the massacre began.
In an instant, all of Hell erupted around us. The same arms that had dragged my friend to a then-unknown fate sprang out of the walls around us as though the island were alive and began to frantically swing around searching for a body to claim. A few of them found their mark and pulled some of the men towards the walls. Wrapping themselves around their necks, locking them in place, and suffocating them. Any sense of composure our toughest men had remaining left their bodies that very moment, as we all made a mad dash sprint for the ladder. The room was only dimly lit by all of our flashlights though. When we broke our formation and began to run, our visibility became significantly more limited. Bodys ran into each other and men began slipping on the blood that had now reached all of our feet. The fog had also begun rising in intensity at a startling rate and was now almost as thick and copious as it was out on the sea. This made it all the more hard to tell what exactly was happening and before I knew it, I was knocked onto my ass by one of the Canadians as he ran straight into me. The blood rose higher and higher. At an inconceivably fast rate, it was halfway up to my knees by the time I regained my footing. When I did I felt a sudden rush of movement brush by my left leg. That's when I saw it. There were shapes moving in the blood! Large, serpentine-like shapes that slithered all around us and began to quickly encircle my team. Like sharks they enveloped us, poised for the kill. They seemed to be probing us for weakness, waiting for the exact right moment to strike and take as many of us down as they could. I wasn't gonna let them get me. My body moved independently of my paralyzed psyche as I sprinted for the ladder, and leaped as high as I could to escape the cavern. However, The ladder was barely wide enough to fit one man on it. It was Made of wood and was not meant to support the weight of more than a couple of men at a time. I remember just how carefully we had to scale it just to get down to the cursed room in the first place! I worried it was going to give way at any second and I would be stranded in that room with those things! With the well! I felt it crack and buckle beneath me as more men than intended all tried to climb it at once. I pushed into the man above me, just as the person below me did. All in a desperate race to escape. Just when I was sure all was lost and I would never make it out, I reached the top and rolled onto my back. As I did so I heard a loud snapping sound, followed by 8 loud splashes hitting the liquid beneath.
I rolled over and shined my flashlight down the hole to look at the scene and try to help some of the men escape what had now become a tomb. It was no use though. It was 20 feet down. I… I couldn't reach any of them. Weathers… McKinley, they stared up at me and shouted for help but what was I supposed to do? The blood had risen to about waist-high by that point and there were more of those fucking things still circling them! They climbed over one another in a desperate attempt to get enough height to reach the exit but it was nowhere near enough. I felt so helpless. I watched the mysterious shapes and figures in the blood creep up to them from behind. Then, As if coordinated, in an instant they pounced on and dragged 3 men under the murky depths all at once. In that split second when they had leapt from the blood to attack the men I caught only the faintest of glimpses of their true form. They were like eels, or … or leeches with spider legs and beaks. Something of that family but it's still not an accurate comparison. They were truly, otherworldly. Inhuman even to creation itself. They were abominations that I'm glad were obscured by the fog as, to have glanced upon them in all their unholyness would've been too much for me at that moment. They yanked the men down into the ocean of blood. As they did so the men thrashed around chaotically and knocked more men over making the already futile pyramid of terrified men all the more pitiful. That's when I noticed the three who were taken by those serpents were being dragged towards the well! They were being dragged to the well so it could devour them just like Goff and take them away to some unspeakable fate! I looked at the edges of the room to search for the first victims of the attack. The ones who had been forcibly dragged towards the walls by the arms. When I found them I felt my stomach churn once again. Their bodies were halfway into the cavern walls! The arms were dragging the men headfirst into the island itself to be consumed! It was as though the island itself was alive! The well was alive And it wanted us dead! The remaining few screamed and pleaded and begged me to help them. All I could do was stare down at the chaos before me and watch.
I was ripped out of my comatose state by a firm hand on my shoulder. It was Hawks.
“Get up! We gotta get the fuck out of here!”
He picked me up by the back of my shirt and dragged me to my feet pushing me up the staircase. I had no activity coursing through my head and yet I ran. My body was truly on autopilot. I couldn't think of anything other than the men we were leaving behind and the look I saw on their faces as they screamed at me for help. The fog had now completely engulfed the inside of the fort and I struggled to maintain my footing as I ran as fast as I could through the first chamber and up the staircase. As we exited the main door I was stopped dead in my tracks. I heard gunshots behind me. By god… They were still alive! They were still fighting to get out and I was abandoning them! Hawks once again yanked the back of my shirt forward as he walked past me.
“There's nothing we can do for them! We have to get to the boats now!” and with that, he ran off ahead of me through the red smoke. Every fiber of my being compelled me to go back but my body refused to obey. I just stood there trembling, white knuckle grasping my rifle as I struggled to make a choice. After a few agonizing seconds of contemplation, I followed after Hawks and made my way to the boats. To freedom.
As we sped away from the island at top speed I was able to slowly creep back to the real world mentally and finally take note of my surroundings. It was me, Hawks, and 3 other British troops. Only 5 men had made it out. None of us said a word. We all just kept to ourselves and stared off into space doing our best to process what had happened to us. I looked back at Fort Ond one last time before it disappeared over the horizon. The fog had grown larger now. Redder. Hungrier.
When we got back to the destroyer we told command everything that we saw and what had happened. They didn't believe a word of it. I can't really say I blame them. We must've sounded insane to them. Showing up missing 30 men, covered head to toe in blood, Rambling about a mysterious well, our friends being dragged away to an unknown fate by strange creatures, Ancient bronze doors, and slaughtered nazi soldiers. They told us that we had most likely been exposed to a nerve agent. That the base was being classified as a possible chemical weapons lab and that when we inhaled the fog, maybe we were subjected to it and its hallucinogenic properties. But we were sealed up head to toe! We stood up for ourselves as best as we could. We all corroborated each other's stories and validated each other's testimonies. We swore up and down till we were blue in the face that the island was not what we thought it was. That our friends had been killed by an unknown force and that we had to destroy the fort. They just stared at us like we were a pack of lunatics. They had made up their mind about what had happened to us on that island. Any attempt made by any of us to set the record straight only served to make us look even more insane to them. I turned to one of the admirals and spoke up one last time. I had to know something before they turned us away.
“Please tell me you guys are gonna level that fucking place”
He stared at me for a few tense seconds before simply saying “We’ll handle it.”
And with that, it was over. All the remaining members of Operation Maelstrom were discharged the next day. Deemed “medically unfit” to continue service. Each of us was briefed individually on the events of that night and I was told not to utter a word to anyone about the events of Operation Maelstrom, or to disclose the fort's location to anybody. The Colonel who was briefing me told me “For the record, I believe there's at least a little truth in what you told us. But regardless, you and the survivors are a liability now. Unstable and erratic. We can't risk putting any of you onto another operation, not after what happened to you. Or at least, not after what you think happened to you. I'm sorry but this is for your own good.” I was put on a plane the next day and sent home.
that's it…
You don't believe a word of what I just said, do you?
Dad - Well… no, not all of it. I mean, I want to but it's a little much to proc-
Grandpa - I know how it sounds! You think I don't hear myself saying this shit to you? I know how it must sound! But it's the truth, son. The well is real! What happened to me… was real.
Dad - I'm sure it must've felt that way, Dad. But you gotta-
Grandpa - YOU DON'T BELIEVE A FUCKING WORD OF IT! Nobody does. You, the doctor, and every other person I've confided in just think I'm some fucking lunatic who imagined all this. I see the way you're looking at me! Like I'm just some poor old man who's losing his mind! I KNOW WHAT I SAW! I KNOW WHAT I WENT THROUGH! You weren't there.
Dad - I know I wasn't! I'm not saying I was Dad but c'mon. Work with me. Isn't it possible it WAS a nerve agent or something? How the hell would you know it wasn't?
Grandpa - BECAUSE WE ALL SAW THE SAME DAMN THING! All of the survivors of Maelstrom gave the exact same testimony upon our return! Everything from our encounter with the fog to our return to the ship was synced up perfectly! What? Do you think we all hallucinated the exact same thing?
Dad - No! I just think that maybe-
You know, They took the books that Captain Hawks acquired. Oh yeah! They made sure we kept nothing from our mission. Stripped us bare right after we returned to ship but He told me what he saw in those pages! More of those Strange symbols! Those hieroglyphics of unknown origin. The mention of a “Tor zur Hölle”. Some kind of fucking portal to hell, or somewhere worse, or god knows where! You wanna know why I can't sleep at night, Patrick? The real reason? It's because I know it's still there! “Well handle it”.Yeah like hell they did! They probably just set up shop themselves and tried finishing what the krauts started. Or maybe not. Maybe they heard our warnings and listened to us. Maybe they shelled the place into oblivion and actually did handle it. But I'll never know son. I'll never get my closure on the events that happened that night. I'll never get to know with 100% certainty that the well has been sealed and that whatever lies in the depths of Fort Ond can't get me anymore.
Dad - Let's just take some deep breaths ok? Why don't we just calm down and -
Grandpa - This was a waste of time. It always is with you people.
Dad - Dad, please!
Grandpa - We're done here! turn that damn thing off and get-
The tape ends there. I couldn't find any additional tapes in my fathers' belongings. So, for the time being, that's where the story ends too. I didn't know my grandfather too well. He died when I was 12 and was a recluse so sadly, this tape is one of the only glimpses I've ever gotten into his life. I don't know what to believe. It’s easy to write him off as crazy or the victim of a gas attack. But The fear I heard on that tape sounded so real. That's gotta mean something right? If nothing else, the torment he endured was real. And Maybe, that's all that matters. Or maybe, just maybe… he’s right. Maybe Fort Ond still stands. Exactly as he described. Hidden somewhere, behind the veil of fog.

2024.05.28 08:00 MizukidotKiryu AITA For leaving a group after a campaign where they used me as a healbot?

I (21NB) was in a party where we were playing a nautical themed kickstarted funded campaign. The entire campaign lasted over a year, from Level 1 - Level 20, and was streamed live on Twitch. The party breakdown was as follows:
Me - Dwarf Stars Druid/Life Cleric
Player 2, M, aka "Two" - Modified Kenku (could talk normally, flavoured as a penguin) Wizard/Fighter
Player 3, F aka "Three" - Tiefling Ranger
Player 4, M aka "Four" - Campaign Specific Giant Shrimp Barbarian, Campaign Specific Triton-like Sorcerer, Campaign Specific Homebrew Demigod Cleric (this guy died a LOT)
Player 5, M aka "Five" - Campaign Specific Lizardfolk Rogue
And finally "The DM", M.
From the beginning, there were multiple red flags I should have caught. First of all, the fact that the other players specifically told me (at character creation) that they would not be playing any type of support. 5E can work without a designated support (especially if you minmax like these guys did and could kill anything in two turns), but I didn't mind as I was just happy to be in a campaign. Plus, 5E Clerics can hit pretty hard in their own right.
The true problems came when the campaign started reaching the 10+ levels. Due to some insane minmaxing and abuse of RAW, it was rare for combat to last more than 2-3 turns. "Two" was especially egregious with this ("Four" slightly less so), abusing the spinelessness of the DM and constantly outputting insane damage (then begging for a short rest for his spell slots). When the party did take damage, they'd immediately start begging heals off of my dwarf, even if i had other plans for my turn in combat. It became so frustrating that by the last two sessions (in which the DM had handed "Two" a god-killing weapon that I had to rock-paper-scissors away from him), the DM said he was confused by "my character's rough attitude", something she had had since session 1. What he failed to realize was that I was barely able to get a word in over the other players during the sessions, which resulted in me being unable to truly show how my character acted.
Finally, the campaign ended. We killed the BBEG, saved the islands, etc. After the chorus of "good game" from the other players (I did not participate), we ended the voice call. Immediately after, I left the Discord server the game was held on, and blocked all of the party members and the DM. I haven't spoken to them since, and have no desire to, as that game was a turning point for what I was willing to put up with as a player.
I recognize that this move is immature, but after being talked over so many times during the game, I doubted they'd be willing to listen to me air my grievances about their play styles.
AITA for not giving them a chance to explain their choices?

Just the other day, I set up the LUE Bona 12x14 Gazebo in my backyard and let me tell you, it was a game-changer! . The installation process was a breeze, and before I knew it, I had a little oasis in my own home.
The aluminum frame and galvanized steel top made me feel like I had a sturdy fortress, protecting me from the elements. I loved the dual-layer roof, perfect for those breezy summer days, and the mosquito netting was just the cherry on top.
It felt like I had my very own private hideaway, all while soaking up the great outdoors. Despite the size, it was surprisingly easy to transport and set up.
No more worrying about rain or wind interrupting my time outside – this gazebo has become my go-to for creating the perfect outdoor experience, and I'm so glad I made the investment.

🔗Premium 12x14 Gazebo with Bluetooth Sound and LED Lighting

The Sunjoy Elmgrove hardtop gazebo brought an unexpected oasis to my own backyard. The 12 ft. x 14 ft. size created a generous covered space, perfect for gathering with friends and family. The rust-resistant powder-coated steel roof and frame added durability, and I appreciated the natural cedar frame components.
One major highlight was the included LED lighting, integrated with the gazebo, and the functional, high-design chandelier feature. Bluetooth sound system, powered by the built-in solar panel, added to the ambiance. However, I needed to purchase six AA batteries for LED lighting, which I found a bit of a drawback.
Assembly instructions were straightforward, but I did encounter some issues with windstorms initially, which were promptly resolved by the manufacturer. Overall, the sturdiness and versatility of this gazebo make it a great addition to any outdoor living space.

As I stood in my backyard, admiring the newly-installed Messina Gazebo, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. The beige structure, made of high-quality aluminum, stood tall against the elements like a fortress ready to withstand any storm.
The taupe roof and cupola, fashioned from galvanized steel panels, provided a stylish and durable shelter. With the included black PVC-coated polyester mosquito netting, I knew that the gazebo would not only protect us from the sun's rays but also from any unwanted guests like mosquitoes.
One of the best features was the convenience of not having to store the roof away for the winter. The thought of not having to worry about storing it during colder months made me breathe a sigh of relief. However, I learned the hard way that snow should never be neglected. After a heavy snowfall, I had to remove the snow from the shelter to ensure its longevity.
The possibility of ordering replacement parts if needed provided peace of mind that this gazebo would truly last for years to come. Overall, my experience with the Messina Gazebo has been nothing but positive, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a sturdy, stylish, and protective outdoor space.

The Canopia Roma Gazebo, measuring 12' x 14', has been a delightful addition to my outdoor space. The aluminum frame and twin wall polycarbonate roof make it sturdy enough to withstand heavy winds and snow, allowing me to use it even on rainy days. The sidewall height and headroom provide enough space for comfortable entertainment, while the shaded area offers a perfect spot for relaxation.
Assembling the gazebo was a breeze, despite the minor inconvenience of a few parts not fitting correctly. The customer service from Grizzly shelter was top-notch, providing helpful advice to resolve any issues. Overall, this gazebo has been a fantastic investment, adding class and functionality to my garden, and I've enjoyed using it for various activities, from lounging to hosting barbecues.

During a recent backyard picnic, my friends and I were graced with the presence of the Kozyard 12x14 hardtop gazebo. The first thing that caught our attention was the aluminum canopy with a double roof pergola style. Not only did it provide a contemporary look, but it stood strong against the elements.
As we stepped inside, we noticed that the canopy came with netting and shaded curtains, which was perfect timing as we were greeted with a swarm of mosquitoes. The screen stitching with the corner straps had been carefully constructed, ensuring we were protected from the hungry buzzing critters lurking outside.
One feature that stood out the most was the brown color, adding a touch of elegance to our outdoor gathering. We sipped our lemonades under the canopy, enjoying the soft breeze that filtered through the gazebo. It was as if we were transported to a luxurious tropical paradise, right in our own backyard.
However, there was one downside that was hard to overlook – the false sizing of the gazebo. We had ordered a 10x12 gazebo, but unfortunately, it was much smaller than expected. Nonetheless, the Kozyard 12x14 Hardtop Gazebo had still managed to deliver a relaxing and luxurious experience. So, while it may not have met our initial size expectations, it did provide a cozy and stylish haven from the outdoors.

🔗Rustic 12x14 Gazebo Enhances Outdoor Gatherings

The Amish Country Gazebos Pergola in a Box caught my attention when I was looking for a way to spruce up my outdoor living area. With its natural finish, this 12x14 ft pergola added a touch of elegance and character to my place. It was a breeze to assemble, thanks to the detailed and easy-to-follow instructions.
Hand-selected, pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine made the construction sturdy and dependable, just like the material used in building roller coasters and boardwalks. The hand-crafted posts and the arched roof not only made the pergola look luxurious but also provided much-needed shade on sunny days.
Although it had a high price tag, the investment was worth it, as its beauty added appeal and value to my outdoor space. I'd recommend this 12x14 Gazebos to anyone looking to create a stylish, functional, and elegant outdoor oasis.

🔗Stylish, Durable 14x12 Hip-Roof Gazebo for All Seasons

Meet the 14x12 Backyard Discovery Barrington Gazebo, a true powerhouse in the world of outdoor structures. This heavy-duty, steel marvel is here to prove that strength and style can coexist harmoniously. Boasting a well-thought-out, timeless design, this gazebo showcases a beautiful fusion of cedar and steel, crafted to withstand even the fiercest weather while remaining stylish and versatile.
My journey with this gazebo began with an exciting sense of anticipation. I had been meaning to add a touch of elegance to my backyard and this product seemed like just the thing. I was surprised at how durable and sturdy it was. It truly felt like a little fortress ready to withstand anything the great outdoors could throw at it.
One notable feature that stood out to me was the easy assembly. The comprehensive instruction manual made it a breeze to put together, even without any prior experience in such projects. The interactive BILT app provided valuable assistance throughout the process.
However, there were a couple of areas where the experience took a bit of a dive. The metal roof subassemblies were incredibly heavy, and lifting them into position was a challenge I couldn't handle on my own. An engine hoist and assistance from three others were required to manage the load and navigate the positioning.
Another minor concern stemmed from the lack of a mosquito net and privacy curtains designed specifically for this product. I'm currently on the lookout for suitable universal alternatives for this issue.
In conclusion, the 14x12 Backyard Discovery Barrington Gazebo has not only lived up to my expectations but also far exceeded them. I wholeheartedly recommend it for those seeking a durable, stylish, and easily assembled outdoor structure. Despite the occasional challenges, the end result is a beautiful and functional addition to my backyard.

🔗Yardistry 12' x 14' Meridian Wood Gazebo with Aluminum Roof

https://preview.redd.it/vsttkixkn33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da77f4d00b6fbd5d5714ee0bafe8f0065e2e1bfb
I recently had the pleasure of trying out the 12' x 14' Meridian Gazebo by Yardistry. The first thing that stood out to me was its ease of use. The gazebo features an easy glide track system that makes it simple to open and close the mesh.
The full-length panels with heavy-duty zippers on all four sides create a sturdy structure, perfect for any outdoor event. The post-mounted ties in each corner were a great addition as they held the mesh back when it wasn't in use, providing peace of mind and a sense of security.
However, one downside I encountered was the time it took to assemble the gazebo. It required careful planning and attention to detail, which may not be ideal for everyone. Additionally, I found that a few of the hardware components were a bit challenging to work with.
All in all, the Yardistry 12' x 14' Meridian Gazebo is a well-designed, versatile, and attractive addition to any outdoor space. While it may not be the quickest to assemble and some features could use minor refinement, the pros vastly outweigh the cons. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to expand their outdoor living area.

🔗Norwood 14x12 Heavy Duty Cedar Gazebo for Versatile Outdoor Spaces

https://preview.redd.it/w2nmetaln33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2adfe6c9fb12f41a33f4cf1d46de959e7fe2d58
I recently had the opportunity to try out the 14x12 Norwood Gazebo and I must say, it truly exceeded my expectations. The first thing that struck me was the sheer size of it - it's bigger than I imagined, which made it perfect for a variety of uses in my backyard. The cedar frame and strong steel roof are a testament to its durability, ensuring it will withstand the elements and last for years to come.
One of my favorite features is the interactive BILT app, which made assembly a breeze. With all the components pre-cut, pre-drilled, and pre-stained, I was able to put it together relatively quickly. However, the gable ends did require some extra help, making it a two-person job.
Another highlight was the quality of materials and construction. The gazebo is built to last and its timeless design will undoubtedly enhance the appearance of any outdoor space. I'm already planning on hosting outdoor parties and relaxing under my new Gazebo this summer.
Overall, the 14x12 Norwood Gazebo was a delight to assemble and use. It's the perfect addition to any backyard and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Highly recommended!

🔗Weather-Resistant 12x14 ft. Brown Gazebo with Screening and Privacy Curtains

https://preview.redd.it/13iiuprln33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a02b6c619691d17575478261e1203774c453d9e5
I recently spent a weekend afternoon assembling the 12x14 Gazebo Penguin Venus Gazebo in my backyard, and I must admit, the process was quite challenging. The screws were not magnetic as mentioned, which made it harder to assemble, and the zippers on the screening curtains seemed to be of poor quality.
However, once I had the gazebo up and running, it provided the perfect amount of shade and protection from the elements, making it a great addition to my outdoor space. The screening curtains were also quite useful in keeping bugs at bay during my backyard barbecues.
One highlight that stood out to me was the reinforced polycarbonate roof with UV protection, which proved to be quite durable and weather-resistant. Additionally, the 100% rust-proof fiberglass screen was a nice touch.
Overall, I would recommend this gazebo for those who are willing to put in the effort to assemble it, as it provides a comfortable outdoor living space with all the comforts of the indoors.

I recently had the chance to try out the Mondawe 12 ft. x 14 ft. Outdoor Cedar Wood Frame Patio Gazebo Canopy. It's a sturdy and elegant addition to any outdoor space, perfect for hosting BBQs or spending quality time with loved ones. The double gazebo canopy allows sunlight to filter through and provides excellent airflow.
One of the best features of this gazebo is its powder-coated gazebo aluminum frame. It's sturdy, anti-corrosion, and all-weather resistant, making it a reliable choice for years to come. Another great aspect is the water gutter, which lets rainwater flow seamlessly from the top to the ground, keeping your patio dry and comfortable.
The gazebo provides 168 square feet of coverage, which might seem a bit cramped at first, but it was surprisingly spacious and comfortable during my time using it. Whether you're cooking up a feast, chatting with friends, or simply enjoying the outdoors, you're sure to love the versatility and practicality of this gazebo.
One small drawback was the inclusion of insect screen and privacy curtains, which were a bit challenging to set up. However, once in place, they offered much-appreciated privacy and protection from the elements. Overall, this Mondawe gazebo is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to elevate their outdoor living experience.

For my recent outdoor gathering, I decided to make use of the Mykonos II Double Roof Gazebo from Sojag. As I started putting it together, I noticed the sturdy frames made of high-quality aluminum and the galvanized steel roof that I presumed was meant to withstand harsh weather conditions. The included PVC-coated polyester mosquito netting was a welcome addition, providing protection from pests and a bug-free outdoor space.
Once assembled, the gazebo stood tall and provided a perfect shaded area for my guests and me. The dark grey powder coated aluminum structure blended seamlessly with the setting and the grey galvanized steel roof offered shelter from both excessive sun and rain. In addition, the gazebo's impressive size allowed me to comfortably accommodate a group of people for dining or relaxing.
Despite the slightly confusing assembly instructions, I managed to finish the gazebo within a reasonable amount of time. The sturdy construction made it a reliable addition to my outdoor space, giving me confidence that it would withstand any weather conditions.
In conclusion, the Mykonos II Double Roof Gazebo from Sojag has been a great investment for my outdoor living space. Its robust construction, shade-providing capabilities, and protection from bugs make it a top pick for anyone looking to enhance their outdoor living experience.

I recently got my hands on the Mondawe 12 ft. x 14 ft. Brown Aluminum Frame Patio Gazebo Canopy Shelter with Galvanized Steel Hardtop Roof for Deck Backyard. What an experience it has been! The first thing I noticed was the stunning design of the gazebo. The aluminum frame and the brown powder-coated roof make it resemble wood, giving it a warm and inviting touch for any backyard setting.
The gazebo is incredibly easy to assemble, a fact I'm grateful for after spending time in the past, trying to figure out which of the pieces belonged where. The roof is sturdy and withstands outdoor elements, making sure I stay cool and dry. It's also been a great addition to my backyard parties, offering a shaded space under the sun. However, I do wish for more color options to choose from. But overall, I can't complain. It is the perfect addition to my outdoor living space.

I recently had the chance to spend some time under the Mondawe 14 ft. W x 12 ft. D Aluminum Patio Gazebo. The first thing I noticed was how sturdy it was. The powder-coated aluminum frame is not only strong but also resistant to rust, perfect for all weather conditions.
One of the standout features was the double-layered canopy design. It allowed sunlight to filter through, creating a bright and airy space. This feature made it perfect for outdoor gatherings or a quiet day of relaxation.
The water gutter system was another plus. It effectively channeled rainwater from the top of the gazebo to the ground, keeping the area dry and preventing water damage.
The gazebo offered ample coverage, at 144 square feet, without feeling cramped. It became our go-to spot for BBQs and family gatherings, providing enough space for everyone to enjoy.
The added benefits of insect-proof screen doors and privacy curtains made this gazebo even more versatile. We could enjoy a bug-free, private time outdoors or open it up for a more open and inviting atmosphere.

Buyer's Guide

When it comes to choosing the perfect 12x14 gazebo for your backyard or outdoor space, there are several important factors to consider. From materials and construction to size and style, this buyer's guide will help you navigate the process and find the gazebo that best fits your needs.

1. Material Type

The primary material type for 12x14 gazebos is usually aluminum or wood. Aluminum gazebos are lightweight, easy to assemble, and resistant to rust and corrosion. Wooden gazebos, on the other hand, offer a natural, aesthetically pleasing look, but require more maintenance and are susceptible to weather damage.

https://preview.redd.it/5q7zl9oqn33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=33467617bb971cc0f1d7bb03ffbb1487ff2a2543

2. Construction Quality

A good-quality gazebo will have sturdy construction, with strong frames and well-made joinery. To ensure durability, look for features like reinforced corners, thick powder-coated aluminum, and high-quality hardware. This will help guarantee that your gazebo remains stable and functional, even through adverse weather conditions.

3. Size and Shape

When selecting a 12x14 gazebo, consider both the floor area and the roof shape. The available roof shapes typically include gable, flat, and hipped styles. Each type offers a distinct appearance, so choose the one that best complements your outdoor space. Also, ensure that the internal dimensions of the gazebo are large enough to accommodate your desired seating arrangement or any outdoor furniture.

4. Color Options

Many 12x14 gazebos come in a range of color options. While the choice may seem subjective, it is crucial to select a color that complements your outdoor space's existing color scheme. Additionally, consider the gazebo's colorfastness, as repeated exposure to sunlight can cause fading over time. This will ensure that your gazebo retains its vibrancy and appeal in the long run.

5. Customization & Add-Ons

Some 12x14 gazebos offer room for customization or additional features. These could include built-in lighting, integrated sound systems, or even attached tables or benches for added functionality. Research available customization options to ensure that your gazebo matches your specific outdoor design goals.

6. Assembly & Maintenance

Assembly is an essential factor to consider when purchasing a 12x14 gazebo. Some models may require professional installation or come with extensive assembly instructions. Make sure to factor in the installation fees or the time it may take you to assemble the gazebo yourself. Additionally, consider the ongoing maintenance required for the material type you choose and plan accordingly.

7. Warranty and Customer Service

A good warranty can provide peace of mind and security for your investment. Research the warranty terms provided by the manufacturer, as well as their customer service reputation. Should you need support or have questions about your gazebo, it is essential to know that you can rely on the manufacturer's assistance.
Selecting the right 12x14 gazebo can greatly enhance your outdoor living experience by providing a comfortable, stylish, and functional space for relaxing or entertaining. With careful consideration of factors like material, construction, size, color, and warranty, you can make an informed decision and create an ideal outdoor retreat for years to come.

2024.05.27 21:47 dizzybones12390 How do I get over my fear of raw/undercooked meat?

Hi all. My partner had to unexpectedly take a job out of state recently so, due to work reasons, we will be separated for a while. Since I’m going to be alone and cooking for myself for an extended period of time, I want to get myself more comfortable handling raw meat and properly cooking, which is primarily what my partner handles when we are cooking together. My problem is that I am a high anxiety individual, and struggle with contamination OCD, specifically in regards to food. Handling, and the thought of consuming raw or (unsafely) undercooked meat causes me a lot of distress, and has on occasion made me physically ill.
In previous attempts of cooking meat on my own, I am always using a food-safe thermometer, but will end up convincing myself that I’m reading it wrong, or that it’s improperly calibrated, so in an attempt to ensure the meat is cooked through, I overcook it.
Has anyone else had this problem? (I have never met someone in my life who has similar feelings/this extreme of a reaction.) If so how were you able to get past it? I don’t want to be limited to easy foods like frozen chicken nuggets and instant ramen/macaroni, and am trying to get in better health and improve my cooking skills. If you are knowledgeable in cooking, are there sure fire ways I can guarantee something is cooked through, or is this something that’s going to come with time? Are there any tips you have that might help me?

2024.05.27 20:31 Rocknocker It takes *balls* to roll in Rock’s league. Part 3.

Continuing…
I figured that if I could re-seat the pump head, I could tighten up the metal-to-metal seal, kill the fire and get it back in production in one fell swoop.
So, that was the plan.
I beat and bashed that flange with the 18 pound sledge and though there were some creditable chips flying, the seal remained just tantalizingly out of alignment.
I did have a load of necessary explosives, but with this job, cooler heads needed to prevail.
I did, instead, use a logging chain to connect the pump jack to the back bumper of my truck.
A few high speed runs, a lot of swearing and just a few more tappy-taps with the sledge.
Roughly an hour and a half later, the pump jack was seated, sealed and back in production.
After resetting them, I ran some barbed-wire around the four posts that the mower had also knocked down. San Juan Gas Well 12-78B was well and good back in production.
Funny. I said it took me about an hour, plus or minus, and I showed up at the County Fairgrounds just 2 hours after I left the house; but I’d still be billing all concerned for 12 hours plus parts.
I don’t kid around when I say that emergencies get triple billed.
Plus, it looked like it might rain.
Somewhere in the county.
So, they get billed for inclement weather service.
After the call for Es’ car insurance, I’m going to have to hire the county mower dude to knock over a few wells a month just to pay her premiums…
Anyways.
Back at the fairgrounds and I’m shocked and amazed to see what the crew has done in my absence.
The place looks like it’s ready to go...the ballpark has been repainted, renovated and brought into the 21st century. The parking areas were freshly bladed and painted. The Porta-San farm was off to one side and gleaming. The beer garden, ticket booths, first aid station, everything done according to plan.
I was very wary. Certainly things like this are unable to go on without at least one major fuck-up.
But, no!
So, we got to the point of the pre-opening day dry-run.
There’s an enormous amount of work yet to do: basically, there’s games, food court, baseball diamond and park, bingo field, Porto-san farm, beer garden, parking lots, entrance gate, ticket takers and hand stampers, ticket sales, first aid, shuttle busses, security, and carnival rides.
Some of this is sub-let out, such as the carnival rides, food court and loo farm, but the rest are our creations and needed manning for the two days we’ll be open. Plus, there was one additional ride that no one would have guessed. That appears tomorrow just as the park opens.
Anyways, in the main office, I call a general meeting and we begin to, for the lack of a better term, ‘storyboard’ the park, timings and operations.
Tickets are a dollar, US currency only. We get loads of Mexican pesos and even a few Canadian loonies and toonies, but I have no desire to worry about international exchange rates. We determine that all attractions will run in ‘whole dollar’ units; i.e., a beer will be USD$2/16 oz. Games are set by the owner, but usually ‘x attempts/dollar’. Entrance fees will be set at children 0-4: free, 5-13: $1, 14-18: $2, adults: $3. Must have hand stamped to return. It’s free and multiple-entry, but will change daily.
The entrance to the ball games is free. Food, beverages and such prices are determined by the vendor.
You get the general idea. I’ll not describe every activity/cost, but I’m sure you all have been to a county or state fair and that’s the general model we chose to follow.
Inside the cyclone fence, we’re not longer a democracy, but a dictatorship. What we say, goes. We have the rules of the house printed up on 4’ x 8’ plywood sheets and distributed around the park in strategic areas; particularly at the front gate. Nothing too onerous, other than if you displease us, we have the authority to toss you out of the park, ban you, trespass you, forbid your re-entry or hold you for the local constabulary.
In other words, have fun, but we don’t suffer fools lightly.
Also, no firearms. This state is concealed carry, but we’ve checked with the local law dogs and we can forbid them. I’m still toting a 10mm, but I write the rules, so you know how that goes.
Just in case.
Also, no fireworks, explosives or other detonating/deflagrating nasties. I’m the only one licensed for these items, so just take a load off, have a beer or five and let us do the heavy lifting.
It was a late night when I wearily plopped into the Jacuzzi that night before the grand opening. We’d been so busy building the park and tending to minutiae, that we never supposed it wouldn’t fly.
“What if the place is a bust?” I worried worriedly.
The Keeper reminded me that “Wrong thinking is punishable; right thinking will be as quickly rewarded.”
“Enough with the negative waves, Moriarty.”, I snuffed as Khan unceremoniously capsized me with an over-enthusiastic greeting.
Finally, it was D-Day. I kissed Es goodbye and ignored her protestations that it wasn’t even dawn yet. I made certain I had enough cigars, a change of clothes and my super-secret shoulder holster for my 10mm.
I needed to get to the location early as there was still a bit of dozer work I wanted to finish before the gates opened at 1000.
But first, stop for a thermos of coffee at the local cafe, and well, those Danish look really nice. Just one won’t hurt, I lied to myself.
I was at the park first light and pleased to see more than half the crew (and their families) had arrived. Yes, free park doings for all park employees. Since we’re only open 2 days, one-half worked opening, the other half was slated for closing. However, families were welcome on both days, free admittance.
I mean, hey, we’re not savages.
A couple of the baseball teams had already arrived and were being bussed to their respective arena areas. We had a parking area set aside just for their busses and such, but it was a ways away, so we had shuttle busses laid on just for them.
I liked the modular aspect of the park: the baseball pitch was more or less self-contained with immediate access to the rest of the park. All the food trucks were in the food court, all the merchants were set-up in Merchant’s Alley, a name they chose themselves. The Porto-san farm was off on one side and proved to be placed in the proper orientation for the local winds. The Beer Garden was the first thing you saw once past the entrance gate. 6 lines, little waiting, as 4 were for beer and 2 were for soft drinks. Behind the Beer Garden was Security and First Aid.
Ah, First Aid.
Thanks to a little conniving, cunning and cuteness, we had one of the local hospital’s Medi-Vac helicopters parked just behind and a hundred meters away from our First-Aid station.
I did a couple of demolition jobs for the Chairman of the hospital and he was more than pleased to be strong-armed into loaning out one of his helicopters.
It was good advertising and could prove to be a life saver.
They also had 4 others that were in service to cover our tri-county area so this one wouldn’t be missed unless it was a full-on exchange. So, I think we’ll be OK for a couple of days.
Besides, I could fly the thing in a pinch.
Anyways, we had our early morning meetings and rode around in the golf cart that someone had appropriated from the local links to check in with the merchants, food court operators and others up and working at this ridiculous hour.
Unbelievable as it seems, things were actually humming along in sync and there were no major disasters. I decided to get my dozer work completed before the crowds appeared so I nipped off to the northern edge of the park.
1000 rolled around and I looked to see the car park better than one-third full. Most all workers and sub-contractors parked in the facility lot to the south so that meant that there were actual people things arriving to partake of our little scheme.
No one was more amazed than me.
Many were there for the baseball matches, but many we also strolling around, partaking of the beer garden, the food courts and games of skill much like any other fair. Later that afternoon, there was to be a battle of the bands for local performers which should draw even larger crowds. These would take over the baseball diamond once the games were complete.
We were going to run 3 Bingo games that day. One at 1300 hours, one at 1500 hours and them the big one at 1800 hours. We had no idea how long each game would take, but we figured a couple of hours each. The first two games were conventional Bingo (fill out the word Bingo with your card numbers; first one wins the game). The last, and biggest purse, was “full card”. First full card wins. Depending on the gate take, the prize for that game was 3 times the first two.
Many people were interested in the Burnt Bowling Ball Bingo games and were buying up Bingo cards at the rate of knots. Since I was going to be the Bingo shooter, I enlisted Parker to be the game’s Master of Ceremonies. He was a closet ham and once I shoved a cordless microphone into his hands, he was a natural born Bingo caller.
I was farting around on the dozer, trying to clear a recalcitrant patch of aspens when a couple of kids stood by the cyclone fence and were shouting at me.
“Whaddya want?” I yelled back.
“How much for dozer rides?” one of the rangier kids asked.
“Not a ride.”, I said, “I’m actually doing real work here.”
“Aw, man!”, on of the kids objected, “I always wanted to see what it was like to ride a bulldozer.”
A light bulb went off inside my skull.
“You kids got tickets?” I asked.
“Oh, yeah!”, they shouted in unison and held up long links of tickets in today’s crimson color.
“Just wait a few minutes”, I said to them as I throttled the old dozer down.
Within 15 minutes, we had a gate installed in the cyclone fence, an enclosed table and ticket-taker’s area right out front and a sign with still wet-letters reading: “Dozer Rides: 5 tickets.”
Hell, I don’t mind if the little fart rides shotgun while I tend to some light landscaping. I can even let them run some of the controls for an extra thrill.
And that’s how Dozer Rides became one of the most popular rides at the fair. I’m seriously thinking that we get a hold of some old construction equipment, like a backhoe, wheel loader, walking cat, and such; find an acre or seven that needs a bit of work and charge folks a set price per hour to go out and play with the heavy equipment.
I’d bet that would be a money-making machine. Then I thought of liability and injury laws.
Nah. I’ll stick to detonics and demolition.
“$20 to set and detonate a stick of dynamite. Nitro Extra.”
Anyways.
It was about noon as I sipped a cold local libation and walked around the fairgrounds. One baseball game had concluded (the home team lost) and another was gearing up. The food court was bustling and the merchants, of everything from CDB oil to rain gutters, were doing a brisk business.
“Hellfire and dalmatians”, I thought to myself, “It looks like this is actually going to work.”
The crowd ranged from kids in strollers to geriatrics in their Electroscoots. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, and with the Rig Pig’s security presence, there was not a note of dissension to be heard. Everyone behaved themselves and was having a good time.
One o’clock rolled around and we began the first bingo game. B-6 was the first number to be called and Parker was having a good time hamming it up as he called the numbers, I was taking in a good amount of currency when people thought they could aim better them me, and the ball hustlers out in the field learned quickly to avoid incoming balls and yet were right on top when the ball impacted.
The first game lasted about an hour and a half. The purse for the first game was $750, and the little old lady that won was over the moon when we confirmed her card was indeed the winner.
Another half hour, and game 2 of the day would begin. The purse here was $1,250. We almost ran out of Bingo cards, but Father Rivera of the local Catholic Church helped us out by ‘loaning’ us 5 gross more. I was on the phone with the printers ordering a rush job for tomorrow of another 10 gross.
The printers both hated and loved us.
The crowds waxed and waned and before the third game of the day (The BIG Game), but about 1730, the lost were filling rapidly and the shuttle busses making runs every 10 minutes.
The purse for the day’s last game, based on our take for the day overall and my donation of all Dozer Ride funds, was $7,500.
That ain’t chicken feed and it was even broadcast over the local radio. Suddenly, we went from sparsely populated to fucking inundated.
The game kicked off precisely at 1800 hours. I was having a grand old time, really getting into the spirit of the event. Parker was getting very happy being so close to the Beer Garden and was really a natural-born comedian and game caller. He stuck in some local stories, that if the Beer Garden hadn’t been open so long probably would have resulted in fisticuffs.
But, it was all in good fun.
And the bloody game took almost 3 hours. I looked like an 18th century chimney sweep and Parker had almost gone hoarse. Finally, someone filled the card, had it verified and was awarded the comically huge check.
Come 2145, it was time for the evening’s fireworks finale.
“When the fireworks are done, you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.”
“Beer Garden open for another 10 minutes, after that, it’s closed for the evening.”
We had a Mayan-style pyramid of empty beer barrels out back of the Beer Garden. Their shiny silver skins reflected the fireworks grandly. Got to hand it to the Mexican pyrotechnicians, they made great fireworks. Not a single misfire or dud and the last one, a horribly expensive 18” shell, was everything they said it would be, and more.
Triggering every car alarm in the parking lot just seemed like the perfect end to a long, though fun and profitable, day.
Plus, the best part?
I get to do it all over again tomorrow.
I’m old and tired. I got in my truck and headed home. I’m going to try this “diversify and delegate” business. Let someone else handle what needs to be done tonight.
Garbage detail.
Beer delivery and empties return.
Food service.
Economics. Profit and loss. Tallies.
Security.
ad infinitum.
I kissed Khan goodnight, mussed Es’ hair and collapsed into a well deserved coma. I had the strangest dreams that something just wasn’t quite right…
Up with the chickens the next day and I decided I might as well just wear what I wore yesterday. I was going to smell like a diesel mechanic and pyrotechnics operator again anyways.
After an impromptu shower and a new set of duds, thanks to Es’ insistence, I pulled out the first cigar of the day and lit it while traveling to the fairgrounds.
Deja vu all over again.
I parked my truck and wandered over to the office. Security buzzed me in and relieved me of a few of my nicer cigars.
Parker greeted me with a fresh coffee, an ashtray and a huge smile.
“OK”, I said between sips of Kona’s best, “What’s the secret?”
“Well”, he grinned, “Even with paying off everyone, we still cleared enough to finalize the bowling alley”.
“Even after our charitable contributions?” I asked.
“Oh, yeah”, he smiled. “Today’s gonna be lagniappe”.
“Does that include payment to your silent partner?” I asked.
He handed me a green tally book.
“Damn.” I said slowly, looking at the numbers. “Even with over $10k in prize money, we still made enough…”
“Yep”, Parker beamed. “’Bowling Ball Bingo’. Sheesh. Who would have thought…?”
“And the Beer Garden’s just opened.”, I smiled, “C’mon, I’ll buy you some liquid breakfast.”
We had several, as the morning was still young and we deserved it.
I had the guys take over the Dozer Ride, and they had a great time building fortresses out of old timber and river cobbles. They had better times destroying them, especially to the whoops and hollers of the kids riding with them.
I spent an hour or so getting the fireworks set for the opening and closing ceremonies. It was Sunday, so I waited until 1030 before setting off the official “We’re open for business” volleys.
However, today was quiet. It was dead compared to the previous day.
Parker began to fret. “What if everyone came yesterday and no one shows today?”
I stood by, lit a cigar, and pondered.
Then Hector and Zach wandered up.
“Senor”, Hector said, “What is today?”
“Sunday”, Parker and I replied.
“And what do many people do on a Sunday morning?” He asked.
“Recover from a hangover?” I offered.
“Get the wife to… ah, make breakfast?”, Parker added.
Hector and Zach just closed their eyes and shook their heads.
“How about ‘Go to church’?” they both asked in unison.
“Of course”, we said. “How could we forget?”
“Enjoy the quiet”, Zach said, “Because when services are over, I’ll bet you a Benjamin there’s going to be traffic jams in the parking lot and a rush on the gate.”
“What makes you think so?” I asked.
“The prize for the final Bingo game got leaked.”, Hector said, “These people would walk over you for $20k.”
“How did this get leaked?” I was going to ask, but didn’t.
“Um”, I said, thinking out loud, “Man your battle stations. It’s going to get messy around here in an hour or so…”
The battle I lines were drawn and everyone was at their post one and one half hours later.
The two nearest lots filled within 30 minutes. The two auxiliary lots took the overflow, but threatened to burst. Luckily, the shuttle busses were operating in fine form.
“Looks like I owe Zach a hundred”, I said to no one in particular.
Parker grinned like the cat that had eaten the canary. “You’ll never miss it after today.”
The first game, with a purse of $1,000, went off without a hitch.
The second game of the day, worth $2k, went off fine. We had to call in breweries from southern Colorado as we had basically drank this part of the Southwest dry over the last couple of days.
Food trucks were coming dangerously close to running out of food. The gamesters of the fairway were getting down to their bottom of the barrel prizes. I finally shut down the Dozer Ride as the old girl needed a well deserved rest.
Then it was time for the announcement.
“Full Card Bingo will commence in 15 minutes. First prize: $20,000. Card sales end in 10 minutes.”
People bought cards like they were dinner portions on Jakoo. Some had over 100 cards each, which proved to be a logistical nightmare if there was even a slight breeze. But, buy them they did and we finally ran out of cards only 5 minutes before we closed down sales.
I had the full team helping me on this last game. We’d rotate running and calling with loading and firing. It proved to be a long night, well until 2145 before we had someone call “BINGO!”.
They didn’t have the full card, and were freaking out when Security arrived and calmed them. We once again explained the rules and if everyone still agreed, we’d continue.
We did. They did and we had another potential winner after only 3 more shots.
This time, the card was correct.
Never before was there more whoops, hollers and groans then when Parker announced that we had a big winner.
The winner’s grin was only matched by the size of the comically outsized award check.
The band struck up a spiffy little number and there was one final rush on the Beer Garden. Luckily, I had foreseen this eventuality and sent the guys, in secret, to procure us a few of the locally brewed fermented malt beverages before all the hoo-ha.
There were toasts and draughts, as I let my minions run the fireworks finale for the evening. I was right on deck if something went awry, but I’d tested and galved the set-up several times so I knew nothing would go haywire.
A sincere thank you to all that made it this far, and the final firework of the night zoomed skyward.
Sure, it cost around US$2,500, but it was one of the loudest and most amazing thrice-color changing, lightning bolt and bloom fireworks I’ve ever seen.
The applause by the remaining crowd indicated they appreciated it as well.
And then, it was done.
I did my needful, said goodnight to all and remembered to tell everyone to be at the post-show meeting tomorrow morning, around 1100.
We were all pooped and needed some time to recuperate.
The next day, everyone assembled as per orders.
Parker was grinning in that most disconcerting manner of his. Either it was good news or he had set a new record for homicide. It was hard to tell which.
First off, thanks to everyone and disbursement of the employment checks, all with healthy bonuses.
Then, there was the matter of disbursal of funds to various charities. Healthy disbursal.
Finally, an overall profits and loss announcement.
We’d made enough to cover all investors, with a nice little 5.5% addition. All vendors and participants had been collected or disbursed. The new bowling alley was totally funded, even with a 10% slop JIC (just in case).
We were also slated for the local news as both TV and newspaper wanted interviews.
Parker handled that. I passed as I needed to load up the dozer and figure out what to do with four bowling ball cannons.
I was able to home the cannons in the yard of National Oilfield Services, as they owed me. The dozer is back in it’s shed at home, and I am watching the sun set as Es, Khan and I relax in the hot tub.
“So”, Es started, “You call this retirement? I have seen you for more than 10 minutes at a stretch for weeks.”
“Very true, m’dear”, I replied, “But it was all for good causes”.
“Yes, I agree”, she said, “But you can’t continue like this. You even found time to knock out a well fire that I didn’t even hear about until it was over and done.”
“Guilty as charged”, I said, “But, I am slowing it down. I can’t just stop and whang it into reverse.”
“But you are going to take some time off”, Es demanded, “I insist.”
“OK”, I replied and handed here an envelope.
“What’s this?” she asked.
“Your cut”, I replied.
In the envelope were two tickets for First Class state rooms aboard the Viking cruise line for the “Grand European Sojourn”, 18 days down the Danube River. Something Es has always wanted to do.
“And the dates are open. Just choose when and we’ll go”. I noted.
I haven’t heard such a school-girly “Squee!” in decades.
Little did I realize that I now needed a tux and Es needed a new travel wardrobe.
All this and I get to wear a penguin suit.
Life, I swear, sometimes….

2024.05.27 13:08 stocklockedandbarrel Being kind to every living thing
