2024.05.13 22:51 adventurepaul E-commerce Industry News Recap 🔥 Week of May 13th, 2024

Hi - I'm Paul and I follow the e-commerce industry closely for my Shopifreaks E-commerce Newsletter. Each week I post a summary recap of the week's top stories, which I cover in depth with sources in the full edition. Let's dive in...
___
STAT OF THE WEEK: Kohl's sales have shrunk by $2.3B since 2019. During that same period of time, the company lost 1.3M customers who no longer shop with the retailer.
___
BigCommerce is exploring a sale after attracting takeover interest, according to sources who chose to remain anonymous due to the confidentiality of the information. The sources said that BigCommerce asked investment bank Qatalyst Partners to solicit interest from potential buyers that include private equity firms, but that the discussions are at an early stage and no deal is certain.
___
Squarespace announced that it will be going private in a $6.9B all-cash deal with private-equity firm Permira, who agreed to pay $44 per share (a roughly 30% premium). Although Squarespace never lost 90% of its share price like BigCommerce, it has experienced a tumultuous time on the market since its IPO in May 2021 — opening around $49.50 and at times trading in the low $20s. Shares rose nearly 13% to $43 in pre-market trading upon release of the news.
___
ByteDance filed a lawsuit in US federal court seeking to block the new law that would force the sale or ban of the app within the country. The lawsuit challenges the law on constitutional grounds, also citing commercial, technical, and legal hurdles, as well as opposition from Beijing. Legal experts say the legal battle will play out in the courts in coming months and likely will reach the Supreme Court.
___
OpenAI unveiled its newest model, GPT-4o, designed to turn ChatGPT into a digital personal assistant that can engage in real-time, spoken conversations and interact with users using text, screenshots, photos, documents, and charts. The new version of ChatGPT also has memory capabilities, which means it can learn from previous conversations. It will be available to both unpaid and premium customers alike. OpenAI also announced that it would be launching a desktop app with the GPT-4o capabilities, giving users another platform to interact with the technology outside of a web browser.
___
Amazon launched in South Africa last week, marking its first marketplace in sub-Saharan Africa, and bringing its total number of marketplaces worldwide to 22. To launch the new marketplace, Amazon is offering free delivery on first orders and on subsequent orders above R500 (about $27), access to 3,000 pick-up points, status updates via WhatsApp to track orders, 30 day refunds, and 24/7 customer support. The marketplace was supposed to launch in the country in 2023, but got delayed due to changes in priorities within Amazon.
___
In an unlikely partnership, Instacart is partnering with Uber Eats to expand into the restaurant delivery business. Instacart will add a new tab for restaurant delivery to its app in the coming weeks, the listings will be provided by Uber, and the food will be picked up and delivered by Uber Eats drivers. Customers will receive the same prices on both apps and Instacart will receive an affiliate commission on orders. It's a strange partnership though given that Instacart and Uber Eats actively compete on grocery delivery. Are they planning to merge? Uber says no.
___
Apple's advertisement for its latest iPad Pro sparked criticism for showing an animation of musical instruments, paint cans, cameras, record players, and other symbols of creativity being crushed by a giant machine, with the output being the new iPad Pro, which the company says is the thinnest Apple product ever. In this context, “crushing” was supposed to symbolize “consolidating” and “compacting” — with the visuals meant to showcase how the new iPad Pro puts the power of all these tools into the hands of creators in one thin device. However online commenters criticized the ad as insensitive and as symbolizing a “destruction of the human experience.” The ad hit the web on Tuesday, and by Thursday, Apple issued a mea culpa and apologized for the campaign.
___
Google is encouraging merchants to enable conversion annotations on their Google Shopping ads, which offer social proof that highlight a product's popularity. Conversion annotations like “best selling” or “3K shopped here recently” would provide visual cues about a product’s popularity or sales performance directly in the ad unit. Annotations like these are par for the course with e-commerce retailers including Amazon, Walmart, and Temu, which all employ similar tactics. They can provide valuable info for shoppers and also help with conversions. However they also open data privacy concerns, given that Google is not the actual retailer or marketplace selling the items, so a merchant would have to share this purchase history data from their e-commerce platform with Google — which technically most already do by giving access to GA4.
___
Shein is attempting to join the National Retail Federation as it pursues regulatory approval to go public in the US. The company believes that NRF membership would boost its chances of receiving SEC approval. However so far, Shein has been rejected numerous times. An anonymous source familiar with the matter said someone with heavy influence at the NRF is strongly against the Shein's admittance. However board members who spoke to CNBC said that Shein's membership application hadn't come up in meetings, and that they aren't involved in deciding which companies are granted access.
___
Amazon is leading the way with selling home goods, capturing 18.8% of consumer home furnishings spending, compared to Walmart's 7.3% market share. Notably, Amazon’s gains in the furniture category come in spite of the company’s decision to phase out two of its three furniture brands last year.
___
Stanley, which is projected to do $750M in sales this year, up from $73M in 2019, after seeing its water bottles become a status symbol thanks to TikTok, is now expanding into trendier accessories. The company is launching a line of bags called the All-Day Collection which include a mini cooler, backpack cooler, and Quencher Carry-All, designed for someone to sling their Stanley over their hip.
___
Jack Dorsey left the Bluesky board and deleted his account on the service he helped kickstart, claiming that Bluesky was “literally repeating all the mistakes” he made while running Twitter. Dorsey says he never intended Bluesky to be an independent company, but rather, an open source protocol that Twitter was supposed to be the first client of. He also confirmed that he is financially backing Nostr, another decentralized Twitter-like service popular among crypto enthusiasts and run by an anonymous founder.
___
Amazon is deploying 50 electric trucks in California, which it claims is the largest EV fleet in the country, as part of its mission to eliminate pollution from its global operations. The trucks will be integrated into first-mile operations, moving goods from container ships at the ports to fulfillment centers, as well as middle-mile operations, transporting packages from fulfillment centers to delivery centers.
___
Wix launched a new tool called AI Portfolio Creator, which allows a user to upload and organize large-scale image collections, select the type of portfolio they want, and then have the AI tool sort and generate a portfolio with clustered images, recommended titles and descriptions, and personalized layout options.
___
Amazon is now requiring all dietary supplements to be verified by a third-party testing, inspection, and certification organization — which is something that not even the FDA requires. Amazon is the largest supplement retailer in the US ahead of Walmart and Target, and its new requirements are expected to put more pressure on the industry, which is being scrutinized more than ever.
___
Alibaba is revamping its flagship retail website Taobao for the first time in seven years with a focus on providing a smoother search and buying process. The website overhaul comes ahead of the 618 sales event, China's second-largest annual shopping event. A few weeks ago I reported that Eddie Wu, the CEO of Alibaba Group, would now be directly overseeing its domestic e-commerce arm which includes Taobao and Tmall Group, and it sounds like he's hitting the ground running with his new responsibilities.
___
Amazon is hosting its first-ever Amazon Book Sale, a new shopping event starting on May 15th that offers up to 50% off print best sellers and up to 80% off Kindle Books. The six day shopping event will exclusively run in the US, and Prime-membership is not required to take advantage of the deals.
___
FTX reported that nearly all of its customers will receive the money back that they are owed, two years after the cryptocurrency exchange imploded. The company owes about $11.2B to its customers and estimates that it has between $14.5B and $16.3B to distribute to them. The caveat is that customers will receive the USD value of their holdings at the time of the exchange collapse, and not the actual crypto holdings themselves, which means that they'll miss out on all gains during the past two years during which BTC went from around $16k to now over $60k. Better than nothing though, that's for sure.
___
800,000 consumers in Europe and the US were duped into sharing card details and other sensitive personal data with a network of fake online designer shops operated from China, which comprised one of the largest scams of its kind with 76,000 fake websites created. The scammers used expired domains to host its fake shops in order to help avoid detection by websites or brand owners, and more than 1M orders were processed in the past three years alone.
___
Beyond Inc, which owns Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock, and Zulily, reported that its Q1 net loss swelled to $72M from $10M a year ago, while its operating loss widened to $58M from $8M. The company's active customers grew to 6M, up 26% from nearly 5M a year ago, however, its average order value dropped to $173 from $220 a year earlier.
___
TikTok will begin automatically labeling AI generated content when it is uploaded from certain platforms like DALL.E 3, Adobe Firefly, Photoshop, and Microsoft Copilot. TikTok will also start attaching Content Credentials to content, which will remain on the media when downloaded, allowing other platforms to read the metadata.
___
eBay is testing an Add To Cart button in search results that opens a Quick View window, allowing buyers to skip the listing page. Technically the button should probably not be labeled “Add To Cart” since it doesn't perform that action, but rather, displays a quick view window with three buttons: Buy It Now, Add To Cart, View All Details. Sellers are worried that buyers will miss crucial details in the product description that may lead to increased returns and negative feedback.
___
Amazon is planning to launch its fleet of drones in Tolleson, Arizona, but the city's extreme temperature is hampering its efforts. Drones can't operate in temperatures exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature that Tolleson crosses for a full three months of the year.
___
A US district judge dismissed X's lawsuit against Bright Data, a data-scraping company accused of improperly accessing X system and violating X terms and state laws when scraping and selling data. The judge basically said that if X owned the data, it could perhaps argue that it has exclusive rights to control it, but then X wouldn't be able to enjoy the safe harbor of Section 230, which allows the platform to avoid liability for third-party content. Can't have it both ways!
___
Nintendo is discontinuing its X integration for the switch on June 10th, which means users will no longer be able to post screenshots or videos to the platform from their device. The drop in support also affects games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which had game-specific options to send out tweets. Microsoft Xbox dropped support for X in April 2023 and Sony Playstation dropped the service in October 2023 due to the increase in X's API access fees.
___
Amazon claimed that its recordable incident rate — a metric that comprises all injuries requiring “more than basic first-aid treatment” — at its US warehouses has improved by 24% since 2019. However the National Employment Law Project challenged Amazon's injury data in a report last week, claiming that Amazon's overall injury rate in 2023 was 71% higher than that of other employers in the sector at 6.5 cases per 100 workers.
___
Amazon Ads announced three new advertising formats for streaming TV including shoppable carousel ads, interactive pause ads, and interactive trivia ads. Amazon did not say when the new ad types would officially launch, but noted that it will formally present them at a presentation on May 14th.
___
Meta is rolling out an expanded set of generative AI ad tools that can create full image variations with text overlays, expand images to fit across different aspect ratios, and generate alternate versions of headlines and other ad text. The features will become available globally to advertisers by the end of the year.
___
Square introduced a tool called Square Kiosk to allow self-service ordering at fast food restaurants. The device is a combined software, hardware, and payment solution that allows customers to select exactly what they want with customization options, upgrades, and add-ons.
___
The European Parliament announced new measures to make packaging more sustainable and reduce packaging waste in the EU, including reduction targets of 15% by 2040 — which sounds far away but is only 16 years away?! As part of the new rules, the EU will set maximum empty space ratios for e-commerce transportation, ban certain single-use plastic packaging types, and beverage distributors and take-away food will have to offer consumers the option of bringing their own container.
___
Indians who pre-ordered Teslas in 2016 are giving up and seeking refunds of their deposits after Elon Musk canceled another visit to the country last month. Disillusioned Tesla enthusiasts in India say they will now buy a car from the company only if they see it in a showroom, or they'll buy a different electrical vehicle from a company that actually exists in the country.
___
Target is limiting its Pride Month collection to select stores this year instead of rolling out the merchandise nationwide like it typically has for the past decade, due to backlash the retailer experienced last year. Last May customers in certain stores knocked down LGBTQ+ merchandise displays, angrily approached store employees, and posted threatening videos on social media from inside the stores.
___
E-commerce spending from Jan 1 to April 30, 2024 rose 7% YoY to $331.6B, according to Adobe Analytics. One trend Adobe identified during the period is a shift of online spending to purchasing the cheapest goods across personal care, electronics, apparel, home & garden, furniture, and grocery.
___
Plus 7 seed rounds, IPOs, and acquisitions of interest, including Shopify's acquisition of Peel, a tool that integrates with a merchant's tech stack including Klaviyo and Recharge and helps them analyze their sales data to improve customer retention.

2024.05.13 10:10 cognitive_courier Is Europe currently experiencing a tech boom?

Microsoft Corporation has revealed plans to allocate €4 billion towards expanding cloud and AI infrastructure in France, marking a significant investment in artificial intelligence technology. The initiative aims to train one million individuals and support 2,500 startups by 2027 within the European nation. This announcement aligns with France's strategic focus on advancing AI, with national funds and local support fostering the growth of startups like Mistral AI and Kyutai. President Emmanuel Macron's "Choose France" summit, designed to attract foreign investment and establish France as a financial center within the EU, serves as the backdrop for Microsoft's commitment. Additionally, Amazon.com Inc. has pledged €1.2 billion towards infrastructure and computing projects, among 56 initiatives unveiled during the event.
Microsoft's substantial investments in France mirror its global strategy of bolstering Azure cloud and AI tools. In addition to the €4 billion allocated for France, earlier investments include €3.2 billion in Germany and $1.5 billion in Abu Dhabi's G42. However, amidst its ambitious spending, Microsoft faces heightened antitrust scrutiny, particularly regarding its cloud business and AI investments, including its significant stake in OpenAI. Despite these challenges, the company continues to forge ahead with its commitment to advancing cloud and AI technologies, cementing its position as a key player in the evolving digital landscape.
The ramifications of Microsoft's €4 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure in France are multifaceted. Firstly, it signifies a significant boost to France's technology sector, enhancing its competitiveness in the global digital economy. The investment is poised to create opportunities for local talent development, job creation, and startup growth, aligning with France's ambition to become a leading hub for AI innovation within the EU.
Moreover, Microsoft's commitment underscores the increasing importance of AI and cloud technologies in shaping the future of industries worldwide. By expanding its Azure cloud platform and related AI tools, Microsoft aims to solidify its position as a key player in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. However, the investment also brings attention to potential regulatory and antitrust challenges, highlighting the need for careful scrutiny of the company's market dominance and its impact on competition and innovation.
Overall, Microsoft's investment in France signifies both opportunities and challenges. While it promises to accelerate technological innovation and economic growth, it also prompts discussions around regulatory oversight and the balance of power in the tech industry.
**
Hi all!
I’ve been seeing more and more tech firms popping up in France. For me, this is interesting for a couple of reasons - the regulatory environment the EU operates in is not the friendliest to tech firms amid severe privacy concerns.
However, it is not just large players like Microsoft who are popping up. The article above is one written as part of my newsletter, and I have had the chance to speak to smaller players who are also setting up shop in France.
I live in the UK, where the government is actively trying to encourage tech firms to come, and would be interested to hear if this is just a French phenomenon, or if other countries in Europe are seeing the same?

Bonjour a tous! J'espère que vous m'excusez d'écrire en anglais.
Have you seen a growth in the number of local startups appearing in the tech sector in France? Do you feel there is a local ‘AI’ boom? If so, why do you think this is?
I’m curious to hear locals thoughts and opinions on the matter.

2024.05.11 15:52 tempmailgenerator Resolving CSS Issues in Outlook Email Templates

Overcoming CSS Compatibility Challenges in Outlook

Designing email templates that render consistently across various email clients can be a daunting task for developers and marketers alike. The complexity arises primarily due to the different ways email clients interpret HTML and CSS. Among these, Microsoft Outlook is notorious for its unique rendering engine, which often leads to unexpected and frustrating discrepancies between the email design and its appearance in Outlook. Understanding these challenges is the first step towards creating more robust and universally compatible email templates. This necessitates a deep dive into the intricacies of CSS support across Outlook versions, as well as the adoption of specific coding practices tailored to mitigate these issues.
Moreover, the problem is compounded by the fact that Outlook uses Word's HTML rendering engine, which is less forgiving and less standard-compliant than web browsers. This can result in common CSS properties and HTML elements not displaying as intended, leading to broken layouts and impaired user experiences. To navigate this landscape, developers must leverage conditional CSS, use inline styles, and sometimes resort to table-based layouts to ensure compatibility. The goal is to craft emails that not only look good in Outlook but also maintain their integrity across all major email clients, ensuring a consistent and engaging experience for every recipient.
Command Description
Inline CSS Using CSS directly within HTML tags to ensure styles are applied in Outlook.
Conditional Comments Outlook-specific HTML comments that allow inclusion of CSS for Outlook only.
Table Layout Using table-based layouts instead of divs for better compatibility with Outlook.

Strategies for Outlook Email Compatibility

Creating HTML emails that render effectively in Microsoft Outlook requires a nuanced approach due to its unique rendering engine. Unlike most email clients that use web-based rendering engines, Outlook relies on the Word rendering engine. This fundamental difference means that many modern web standards and CSS properties that work seamlessly in browsers and other email clients might not work as expected in Outlook. For instance, CSS styles like flexbox and grid, which are staples for responsive web design, are not supported in Outlook. This limitation necessitates a shift towards more traditional and robust layout strategies, such as table-based layouts, to ensure consistency across all viewing platforms.
Furthermore, to address Outlook's idiosyncrasies, developers often resort to conditional comments. These Outlook-specific conditional comments can be used to target styles or even entire sections of the email exclusively to Outlook users. This allows for the inclusion of fallback styles or alternative layouts that better align with Outlook's rendering capabilities. Additionally, inline CSS is crucial for email compatibility across all clients, including Outlook. By placing styles directly within HTML tags, developers can circumvent many of the limitations imposed by email clients' CSS parsing. Careful attention to these practices, along with rigorous testing across various versions of Outlook, is essential for achieving the best possible user experience in email campaigns.

Strategies for Optimizing Email Templates for Outlook

Creating email templates that perform well in Outlook involves understanding both the limitations and capabilities of this platform. Microsoft Outlook, unlike most email clients, uses the Word rendering engine to display HTML emails. This fundamental difference means that many modern CSS properties, particularly those related to layout and animation, do not work as expected. Developers must therefore adopt a more conservative approach to email design, focusing on compatibility and reliability. Utilizing table layouts for structuring content is a key strategy, as tables are consistently rendered across all versions of Outlook. This approach, while seemingly outdated, ensures that your email's layout remains intact, providing a uniform experience for recipients regardless of their email client.
Another important consideration is the use of inline CSS. While external stylesheets are a staple of web development, they pose significant challenges in the email world, especially in Outlook. Inline styles are more likely to be supported and render consistently across email clients, including Outlook. For advanced styling that cannot be achieved with inline CSS alone, conditional comments targeted specifically at Outlook can be used to include CSS or even entire sections of HTML that will only be displayed to Outlook users. This allows for the creation of emails that look great in Outlook without compromising their appearance in other email clients. Adhering to these practices not only improves the visual consistency of emails but also enhances their accessibility and readability across diverse platforms.

  17. Question: Can I use animations or interactive elements in Outlook emails?
  18. Answer: Outlook has limited support for animations and interactive elements, so these should be used sparingly and tested thoroughly.

Wrapping Up Email Template Design for Outlook

Designing email templates for Outlook demands a nuanced approach that respects its distinct rendering engine. By embracing table-based layouts, inline CSS, and conditional comments, developers can navigate the challenges posed by Outlook's Word-based renderer. This approach ensures that emails not only look good but also function well across the diverse landscape of email clients. It highlights the importance of adaptability in email design, where understanding and leveraging the peculiarities of each client leads to more successful and engaging email campaigns. Testing remains a critical step in this process, enabling designers to identify and rectify issues before emails reach their audience. Ultimately, the pursuit of Outlook compatibility is a testament to the meticulous and thoughtful approach required in modern email marketing, where reaching every recipient effectively is paramount.

2024.05.11 05:16 tempmailgenerator Mastering Element Positioning in HTML Emails for Outlook

Crafting HTML emails that look consistent across various email clients, especially in Outlook, can be quite the challenge for developers and marketers alike. The key lies in understanding the peculiarities of Outlook's rendering engine, which often requires specific CSS and HTML practices to achieve the desired layout. Positioning elements within HTML emails for Outlook demands a nuanced approach, as traditional methods that work well in web browsers might not yield the same results in this email client. This intricacy stems from Outlook's use of Microsoft Word's rendering engine for HTML emails, introducing unique limitations and behaviors not found in other email clients.
To navigate these challenges, it's crucial to employ a combination of CSS and table-based layouts, tailored specifically for Outlook's rendering quirks. This involves understanding the role of inline CSS, the significance of table properties, and the strategic use of VML (Vector Markup Language) for more complex styling tasks. By mastering these techniques, developers can create HTML emails that not only look great in Outlook but also maintain consistency across a wide range of email clients, ensuring a professional and engaging experience for all recipients.
Command/Technique Description
CSS Inline Styles Directly styling HTML elements to ensure compatibility with Outlook's rendering engine.
Table-Based Layouts Using tables for structuring the email layout, a method highly compatible with Outlook.

Navigating the Challenges of Email Design in Outlook

Designing HTML emails for Outlook often presents unique challenges that can perplex even seasoned email developers. This complexity arises primarily from Outlook’s use of Microsoft Word’s rendering engine for HTML emails, which interprets CSS and HTML differently than web browsers. For instance, certain CSS properties, such as float and position, which are commonly used in web design, are not supported or behave unpredictably in Outlook. This necessitates a shift in approach, leaning towards more traditional and robust methods like table-based layouts and inline CSS styling. These methods provide a more predictable rendering across different versions of Outlook, ensuring that the email appears as intended for all recipients.
Moreover, the introduction of Vector Markup Language (VML) by Microsoft adds another layer of complexity and opportunity for email design in Outlook. VML enables designers to include advanced styling options that are not possible with standard HTML and CSS, such as complex shapes, gradients, and even conditional comments specifically for Outlook. However, utilizing VML requires a good understanding of its syntax and behavior, as well as how it interacts with HTML and CSS. Despite these challenges, mastering VML and other Outlook-specific techniques allows developers to create rich, engaging email experiences that look consistent across a wide range of email clients, including the notoriously tricky Outlook.

Strategies for Effective HTML Email Layouts in Outlook

Email marketing remains a vital tool for businesses to engage with their audience, but creating emails that look consistent across different platforms, especially in Outlook, can be a daunting task. Outlook, unlike most email clients, uses Microsoft Word's rendering engine for HTML emails, leading to various display issues if not properly addressed. Developers must use specific CSS styles and HTML structures to ensure their designs are rendered correctly. Understanding the limitations and capabilities of Outlook's rendering engine is crucial, from handling background images to controlling text and image alignment. This knowledge enables the creation of emails that look as intended on Outlook, providing a seamless experience for the recipient.
One common strategy involves using table-based layouts, which are more reliably rendered in Outlook than CSS-based layouts. Inline CSS is also a necessity, as external stylesheets are often not supported or inconsistently applied by Outlook. Additionally, for complex designs requiring background images or buttons, Vector Markup Language (VML) is used as a workaround to achieve compatibility. VML allows for the inclusion of graphical elements that are otherwise difficult to implement in Outlook emails. By mastering these techniques, developers can ensure their HTML emails are not only visually appealing but also functional across all versions of Outlook, enhancing the overall effectiveness of their email marketing campaigns.

  11. Question: What is the best way to test HTML emails for Outlook compatibility?
  12. Answer: Use email testing services that simulate different versions of Outlook to see how your emails render across them.
  13. Question: Why is my email design breaking in Outlook?
  14. Answer: It could be due to the use of unsupported CSS styles, incorrect HTML structure, or not using Outlook-specific hacks where needed.
  15. Question: How important is it to optimize emails for Outlook?
  16. Answer: Very important, as a significant portion of your audience may use Outlook, and ensuring a good user experience across all email clients is crucial for effective email marketing.

Ensuring Compatibility Across Email Clients

Developing HTML emails that are compatible with Outlook requires a deep understanding of its unique rendering engine and adapting strategies accordingly. The challenges posed by Outlook's reliance on Microsoft Word for HTML rendering necessitate the use of inline CSS, table-based layouts, and occasionally, VML for complex designs. These practices ensure that emails maintain their intended appearance, providing a consistent and professional experience for recipients. As email continues to be a critical communication tool, the importance of optimizing emails for all clients, including Outlook, cannot be overstated. By adhering to these guidelines, developers can create effective, visually appealing emails that reach and engage their audience as intended, regardless of the email client used. This approach not only enhances the effectiveness of email marketing campaigns but also reinforces brand consistency and message clarity across the digital landscape.

2024.05.10 06:55 aPieceOfMindShit Spam but how? (Outlook.com)

For the last couple of years I was bombarded with spam and phishing mails on my Outlook.com email address.
Microsoft cleaned their act up and since couple of months is now maybe 1 or 2 mails a day.
But yesterday I experienced something weird.
I have a demo environment on Microsoft 365 with totally new email addresses and on 1 account I subscribed to a newsletter of a pretty big clothing store.
I forwarded that mail to my personal email address and suddenly I receive multiple spam mails on my personal email address again.
I'm totally lost what this caused this!
I can see the spam mails containing my demo / test email adres in the name of the sender. But the sender email is like casino@stupidwebsite.com and it's name demoemail@demodomain.com.
I subscribed to 1 newsletter. And forwarded that email to my personal email address.
How does the spam system knows the relationship between my personal email address and the demo email address?
I never used my personal email address combined with details of the demo email address. It's a new email address also.
I'm lost and I'm afraid my email is hacked or something.

Another sign that the economy remains robust despite the current interest rates. ‌
The app economy takes a hit: A few key disrupter tech middlemen had a tough Wednesday. Today's Takeaway is by Hamza Shaban, Senior Reporter. ‌ ‌ A fresh Big Tech boomlet has arrived. ‌ Shareholders aren't just seeing their stock prices swell, they are getting paid too. The dividend, its importance demoted over the past couple of decades by the tech boom, is having a moment again thanks in part to the same companies that made it passé. ‌ In February, Meta initiated a dividend, and Alphabet followed in April. And then came an increase from Apple last week. ‌ But why are tech companies initiating payouts, and why now? ‌ The dividend trend reflects the double role that tech giants hold in society and on Wall Street. They want to be perceived as growth engines, obsessed with frontier tech and fixated on reshaping the future. But they are also mature, cash-rich companies with market caps that start with a "T." ‌
The former fledglings are now apex predators, seasoned with decades of experience balancing new investments with their core business, which happens to be expanding to virtually every domain of life. ‌ Startup versions of these companies would scoff at the idea of paying back a dividend. It suggests their growth days are behind them, that executives don't have a vision for how to deploy their resources. But in this post-pandemic, pre-AI moment, Big Tech wants to prove they can do two things at once: build the infrastructure to dominate the coming era and show investors they have the fiscal discipline and confidence to return value consistently. ‌ That the recent wave of dividend announcements has come alongside disclosures of ballooning AI spending reinforces the dual message. ‌ But it also reflects a reenergized corporate America that has shaken off fears of the recession that never was.
Earnings are rising and with it are massive stock buybacks. The recent wave of repurchases, including Apple's record-breaking $110 billion plan, is the largest sum of buybacks since 2018. ‌ "These companies have seen record profits for some time now and are finding value in passing that profit to shareholders rather than capex," said Alex McGrath, chief investment officer at NorthEnd Private Wealth. "Not to say they are not still heavily investing in growth, but the cash flow has now reached a point where this begins to make sense." ‌ Shareholder payouts, even modest ones from the tech companies, also grant them entry into funds that require a dividend. They are broadening their pool of investors, drawing from portfolios that seek steady income from dividends and people who simply want to see the "number go up" on their brokerage accounts. ‌ It was the staggering gains of internet companies that played a part in making the dividend seem stodgy and antiquated.
Top members of the "Dividend Aristocrats" come from the consumer staples and industrials sectors. When you typically think of dividends, you're disconnected from ideas of rapid growth, more risk, and big gains. ‌ But the mega tech companies have changed. And so has what a dividend company looks like. Just look at Mark Zuckerberg's glow up. ‌ "If they keep the money internally, there is a tendency to have waste. By paying it out, it instills discipline," said Jennifer Koski, professor of finance at the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington, who has been teaching dividend cases for the Big Tech companies since before Microsoft initiated its own in 2003. "The AI spending is their signal we still do have growth opportunities." ‌ In a sign of where things are headed, Koski is planning to teach her next payout policy case. This time, on Amazon.
Big Tech is embracing a hallmark of pre-internet stocks The stock market's rebound from a rough April has been led by some of the most unloved sectors over the past year — the ones that typically outperform when the economy is in a downturn. ‌ This was again the case on Wednesday, with Utilities rising about 0.9% compared to the S&P 500's near-flat return. ‌ Since April 16, around when the S&P 500 hit its recent bottom, Utilities has led the charge, rising nearly 12% and accounting for all of the sector's gains year to date. Consumer Staples has risen almost 5% in that same period. ‌ While these stocks are often tabbed with the phrase "defensive," referencing their outperformance amid sub-par economic performance, Wall Street equity strategists told Yahoo Finance a catch-up trade is the most likely reason for the surge, not recent weaker-than-expected economic data.
Considering both sectors had been among the worst performers in the S&P 500 over the last year, Truist co-chief investment officer Keith Lerner reasoned there's an aspect of the move that is merely investors rotating into an area that has yet to participate much in the recent market rally.
Chart of the day "With markets up so much as we're up since October, people get nervous," Lerner told Yahoo Finance. "They want to rotate into something a little more defensive, take some profit taking ... It's also just saying, 'Hey, what hasn't worked and what could have an opportunity to do some catching up or hold up better should the market correct?'" ‌ Charles Schwab senior investment strategist Kevin Gordon concurred. ‌ "Things had gotten so pessimistic for [Utilities] and you know, in turn, and relatedly, kind of making it more attractively valued for anyone who's looking for deeper value," Gordon told Yahoo Finance. ‌ — Josh Schafer, Markets Reporter

2024.05.09 18:09 TodohPractitioner Happy Tree Friends Is Shit (Remake)

This show gets an F on a A+ to F scale. I wish there was a grade lower. But let that be a sign of things to come, because you’ll see why.
Contrary to what people in the original post thought, my biggest issue with the show isn’t even the gore. Mortal Kombat X is my favorite Mortal Kombat game, and Elfen Lied is currently my favorite Seinen manga. So what’s the problem, you might ask. Why am I not shitting on those for having gore? Easy. It’s the fact that this pathetic excuse for a show has ZERO story, writing, and characters. I could probably make a book a thousand times longer than whatever the longest book in the world is explaining why that’s a problem, and why this show is shit, but I’ve got bigger fish to fry.
I don’t think the show itself knows how repetitive, offensive, juvenile, mean-spirited, unfunny, and senseless it is. It’s pathetic and out of touch. It’s the same dumb unfunny crap every single fucking episode. Is the chicken crossed the road joke funny after the millionth time? I don’t see how anyone could like this show unless if they have severe mental problems, and don’t understand nor speak a single language. You’d also have to be one of those people who legitimately believes the sun is a planet, and the Earth is flat. If so, go get help ASAP. If you made Albert Einstein watch this show, that’s literally the most evil thing you could do to a human being that’s smart. You’re insulting his high intelligence by making him watch this crap.
I don’t care if it’s only three minutes long. So what? I’ve seen YouTube videos that are equally as long or shorter that have a story and characters. Annoying Orange is only a few minutes long yet that has a story and characters. So you have zero fucking excuse. This show shouldn’t even be three minutes long to begin with. If it’s gonna be an official show, then it should be at least eleven minutes of character development and storytelling. The show should be like Breaking Bad. The show is extremely repetitive, disgusting, juvenile, unfunny, retarded, offensive, mean-spirited, and a complete waste of animation potential. Im repeating myself because I want to emphasize how repetitive the show is.
The character designs are horrendous and hurt my eyes. They look like they were made on Microsoft Paint. They’re all lazily designed, as well as copied and pasted. I can and have done a better job designing characters both on a piece of paper and on Microsoft Paint. The nastiest houses in the TV Show Hoarders are much nicer looking. Diarrhea is much nicer looking. Not to mention the characters aren’t even characters. They have no personality, are all stupid, and don’t talk, only speak in this incredibly whiny, incomprehensible baby noise that hurts my ears. The characters are just as much as characters as much as a piece of plastic. My non existent pet Tyrannosaurus rex with arthritis and cancer that is mute has a personality. Lighting McQueen, a car, a thing that isn’t alive has a personality. Groot, a literal piece of wood, has a personality. A dirty diaper has a personality. I’d rather look at diarrhea and have a million fire alarms at full volume go off next to my ears.
But guys, another thing that grinds my gears is that this show also has pedophilia. No joke, the adults in the show are dating kids, and even making out with them. There’s also necrophilia; in one episode where the characters turn into zombies, the yellow rabbit and pink thing are kissing. But there’s a ton of unanswered questions. Where’s the rest of the parents of these characters? How does the guy in ice move, eat, etc. if he’s dead? Why does the yellow rabbit wear slippers? Why do these characters have such stupid and immature names that sound like a fucking preschooler named them if adults made the show? How does that one beaver do stuff if he has no hands? How does the mole guy do stuff if he’s blind? How do these characters come back the next episode if they were killed? But my biggest question, how the fuck is this a show? There’s zero characters or story. Anyone like me who’s highly educated and intelligent will know this show is bottom of the barrel garbage that is a complete waste of time. I can’t believe I even watched most of the episodes of this crap. I was hoping what I was watching was some kind of pilot or something of something like Breaking Bad. But nope. What a letdown.
The fact that this show was made let alone considered reminds me of something Ian Malcom said in the first Jurassic Park movie. “You were so preoccupied with whether or not you could, you didn’t stop to think if you should.” The people who made this garbage clearly should’ve listened to him.
To make actual garbage you’d find in a trash can look good in comparison is one thing, but to make the Cartoon Network show The Problem Solverz look like the Mona Lisa in comparison is another. At least The Problem Solverz was so shitty, it’s funny, and it doesn’t piss me off. This show is even worse than Velma. At least Velma has a story and characters.
I had to jump through hoops to calm myself down from watching this pile of pig shit. It was arduous. It doesn’t just piss me off. My lungs felt like they were getting squeezed, I was sweaty, I wanted to scream, and I wanted to throw my iPad at the damn wall. I’ve never been bothered by such incompetence, immaturity, and laziness in my whole life, and it deserves nothing but scorn.
I wish I was Thanos, or had the Dragon Balls. I would do anything to have this show’s mere existence disappear forever. I would shove glass up my genitals. I would go through the electric chair. I would jump off of Mount Everest. I would rather play E.T. Atari than to watch this crap again.
But yeah. I’ve wasted enough time on watching this crap. I’m not watching more, since there’s zero point. The same thing is gonna happen, and unless if there’s some major overhaul where there’s actually characters and story, then this show can eat a dick.
This is undoubtedly the worst cartoon I’ve watched, and definitely the worst web series I’ve watched. It needs to be completely reworked and have some actual story and characters in order to even be remotely worthy of praise from me, if not, then permanently erased from existence.
To call this show a diarrhea mountain on fire is accurate and appropriate. Fuck this show.
Ian Malcom: “That is one big pile of shit.”

2024.05.09 15:17 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: Literal Brain Worms by Crooked Media (05/08/24)

"A worm... got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died." - RFK Jr. explaining an earlier case of mental fogginess and memory loss in a 2012 deposition.

Judge Naught

Disgraced former President Donald Trump is having a rough week in Manhattan court. He’s doing much better at subverting justice elsewhere.
These delays put the question of Trump’s accountability directly in the hands of voters. If he can’t scramble back into the White House, he’ll stand trial, eventually, like anyone else.

Look No Further Than Crooked Media

Special guest hosts were just announced for Lovett or Leave It LA! For those of you catching up, Jon Lovett’s taking a few weeks off to work on a project. While he’s out, Lovett or Leave It has lined up an absolutely bonkers lineup of guest hosts including Andy Richter, Larry Wilmore, Matt Rogers, Ian Karmel, Langston Kerman, and Guy Branum! Don't miss tomorrow's show with Andy Ritcher at the Lyric Hyperion. Get your tickets now at https://crooked.com/events!

Under The Radar

The Trump campaign has a zombie problem: It’s being chased around the country by the undead presidential candidacy of former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. Her campaign simply will not give up the ghost even though Haley bowed out of the race in March.
Last night in Indiana Haley bagged 22% of the vote, or more than 128,000 votes. Two weeks ago, Haley captured 17% of the GOP electorate in the Pennsylvania primary, or 160,000 votes. She pulled down similar numbers in Arizona.
It turns out there’s a pretty darn big group of Republican voters who are willing to drag themselves all the way across town to a primary voting booth to pull the lever for anyone but Trump, including for someone who’s not even running. These are moderates, women, and democracy-minded conservatives — including some who are watching their party’s presumptive nominee sit through a criminal trial over his hush money payments to a porn star and wondering how their party got into this mess (as we noted yesterday). The question becomes how many will return to Trumpworld by November — and how many are lost to him for good.

What Else?

President Biden told CNN the U.S. will stop sending weapons to Israel if the country launches a major assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah. He also acknowledged that American weapons have been used to kill civilians.
The U.S. withheld a large arms shipment to Israel last week to signal concerns over a possible Rafah invasion, senior administration officials told NBC News. The Biden Administration also missed a deadline today for releasing a report on whether Israel is using U.S.-sourced arms in accordance with international law. State Department Spokesperson Matt Miller said the legally-required report to Congress should be completed by tomorrow.
Independent presidential candidate RFK Jr.’s campaign confirmed that a parasitic worm once got into his head, ate part of his brain and died there, resulting in memory loss and fogginess. The campaign, which has presented the 70-year-old Kennedy family scion as the younger and more-vigorous alternative to Biden or Trump, insists he’s feeling fine now. And yet… we have so many questions.
Amazon turned off the torrent of negative online reviews for South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s book, the notorious tome in which Noem boasts about shooting her dog and tells a bogus story about staring down North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. But don’t worry, you can still write reviews on Noem’s forthcoming follow-up book, “Saving America from Wokeness Through Dog Murder.”
Meanwhile, Noem, whose book is called “No Going Back,” may finally be backing down from days of insisting that shooting the family dog is simply what strong leaders do. She ditched a planned appearance with Fox’s Greg Guttfeld on Tuesday night. Man, you know it’s bad when you’re a Republican afraid that Fox News will ask you the tough questions.
Marge did it! Rep. After days of talks seeking concessions from Speaker Mike Johnson, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) surprised everyone by triggering her long-threatened motion to oust Johnson from the chair. Republicans quickly moved to kill the motion, but eleven of them voted against Johnson, which means there would have been enough votes to oust YET ANOTHER GOP speaker had Democrats not come to Johnson’s rescue.

Enhancing Communication with ASP.NET Core 7

Email has become an indispensable tool in the digital era, facilitating rapid and efficient communication across the globe. As developers strive to enhance user experience, the ability to send rich, formatted HTML emails has become increasingly important. This capability allows for the transmission of not just plain text, but also styled content, including images, links, and complex layouts that mirror the sophistication of modern web pages. ASP.NET Core 7, the latest iteration of Microsoft's robust framework, offers enhanced features and tools for developers to send HTML emails, thus enabling more dynamic and engaging communication with users.
Integrating HTML email functionality into ASP.NET Core 7 applications involves understanding the framework's email sending capabilities, configuring email services, and crafting emails that are both visually appealing and functionally rich. This process not only requires technical know-how but also a creative approach to effectively communicate messages. With ASP.NET Core 7, developers have at their disposal powerful libraries and services that simplify this integration, making it possible to send emails that stand out in the recipients' inboxes and convey information in a more interactive and appealing manner.

Mastering HTML Email Delivery with ASP.NET Core 7

Email communication has become an integral part of modern web applications, enabling businesses to connect with their customers in a more interactive and personalized way. Sending HTML emails allows for rich content presentation, including styling, images, and links, enhancing the user experience. ASP.NET Core 7, the latest iteration of Microsoft's open-source and cross-platform framework, offers developers robust tools and libraries to implement this feature efficiently.
Integrating HTML email sending capabilities into an ASP.NET Core 7 application involves understanding the framework's email sending infrastructure, configuring SMTP settings, and crafting the HTML content. This article aims to guide developers through the process, ensuring they can leverage ASP.NET Core 7 to send visually appealing emails that can engage users and drive action. Whether you're sending transactional emails, newsletters, or promotional content, mastering HTML email delivery in ASP.NET Core 7 is a valuable skill in the developer's toolkit.

Deep Dive into HTML Email Integration in ASP.NET Core 7

Sending HTML emails through ASP.NET Core 7 applications is a powerful way to enhance communication with users by delivering rich content directly into their inboxes. Unlike plain text, HTML emails can include various formatting options, images, and links, making them an essential tool for marketing campaigns, transactional emails, and customer service communications. The core of sending emails in ASP.NET Core involves setting up and configuring an SMTP server which will relay the emails to your recipients. This setup is crucial as it affects the deliverability and reliability of your email communication. Furthermore, developers must ensure their emails are responsive and well-formatted across different email clients, which can be a challenging task given the variety of email clients and their handling of HTML and CSS.
ASP.NET Core 7 simplifies the email sending process with built-in services and third-party libraries, such as MailKit, that provide more advanced features than the default SmtpClient. For instance, MailKit offers better support for asynchronous operations, improved performance, and more detailed control over the sending process. Security is another critical aspect, as emails often contain sensitive information. ASP.NET Core developers can implement security measures such as SSL/TLS encryption for email transmission and careful handling of user data to prevent exposure to phishing attacks or other security threats. By leveraging these capabilities, developers can create robust, secure, and user-friendly email communication systems within their ASP.NET Core 7 applications.

Enhancing User Engagement with ASP.NET Core 7 HTML Emails

In the realm of web development, the ability to send HTML emails is a crucial feature for enhancing user engagement and providing a rich user experience. ASP.NET Core 7, with its advanced features and capabilities, offers developers the tools needed to create and send visually appealing emails. HTML emails, as opposed to plain text, allow for the inclusion of styles, images, and hyperlinks, making the communication more interactive and engaging. This is particularly important for marketing campaigns, customer notifications, and other communications where branding and user engagement are key. Developers must pay attention to the design and content of these emails to ensure they are effective and accessible across various email clients and devices.
However, sending HTML emails involves more than just crafting a visually appealing message. Developers must also consider technical aspects such as email deliverability, spam filters, and email client compatibility. Ensuring that emails reach the intended recipients' inboxes and display correctly across different platforms requires knowledge of best practices in email development, including responsive design, inline CSS, and testing across email clients. Furthermore, with ASP.NET Core 7, developers can leverage integrated services and libraries to streamline the email sending process, implement security measures, and manage email templates effectively, making the development of sophisticated email functionality more accessible and efficient.

2024.05.08 05:00 Andre3000RPI Yahoo Morning Briefing

Tuesday, May 07
📷 Good morning! The S&P 500 gained over 1% Monday. Disney headlines a big Tuesday for quarterly results, releasing its report card before the bell — an early day for the California-based company.

And once again, tune into Yahoo Finance Live to catch our folks on the ground at the Milken Institute Global Conference in California. (And make sure to keep scrolling for a dispatch from Executive Editor Brian Sozzi.)
What we're watching
📷 Disney reports results: Disney will report second quarter earnings before the bell Tuesday. With its high-profile proxy fight behind it, the company returns its focus to other significant challenges, including the transition to streaming profitability. Investors will be watching any news about an ESPN streaming platform, Disney+ subscribers, and any possible updates about CEO Bob Iger's succession plan. Its stock is up 28% over the last year.

📷 2024's best three-day period: The S&P 500 notched its best three-day run of the year, closing 1% up Monday, as commentary from numerous Fed officials added to the good feelings brought on by the April jobs report.

📷 Fed officials saying the right things: After April's hawkish commentary from a slew of Fed officials before the quiet period, central bank members are once again telling investors what they want to hear. New York Fed president John Williams and Richmond Fed president Thomas Barkin gave investors hope for 2024 rate cuts by soothing rate hike worries on Monday. Williams said specifically that he thinks cuts will happen this year. But, of course, the officials reiterated the central banker mantra: They will be looking at the totality of data as it comes.

📷 A busy day of corporate results: Tuesday features a busy corporate calendar besides Disney. Lyft, Reddit, Match Group, Twilio, TripAdvisor, Ferrari, Crocs, BP, Celsius, Rivian, EA, and IAC also feature on the calendar. Something for everyone. And as you can read about in our Takeaway, Reddit has a new way to field questions on its earnings call — its own product.

📷 Companies are, in fact, earning: We're not done yet with Q2 earnings season, but with 80% of the S&P 500 results recorded, it's safe to say companies are doing far better than expected. As our Josh Schafer writes, the 5% earnings growth companies have reported for Q1 is the most in nearly two years and consensus estimates expect that growth to continue. Even if companies are being lauded a little less and punished a little more in the stock market for exceeding or missing expectations, the fundamentals are improving.
Morning Brief is written and edited by Ethan Wolff-Mann. For the web version, click here. Follow all the action throughout the day on Yahoo Finance and on the Yahoo Finance app.

Reddit's first quarterly report follows Elon Musk's lead
Today's Takeaway is by Myles Udland, Head of News.

On Jan. 30, 2019, Elon Musk launched one of his more unheralded innovations in the business world: He began Tesla's earnings conference call with questions from retail investors.

On Tuesday, Reddit, whose message boards helped fuel the 2021 meme stock rally, will report its first quarterly results since going public and launch its own innovation of a sort, taking questions from the investing public that will be posted, but where else, on Reddit.

Since Tesla's call back in 2019, we've seen several companies take a different approach to explaining their results since going public.

Robinhood, to no one's surprise, has been at the forefront of remaking these quarterly updates, beginning their own calls with questions from retail investors. The company will report its latest quarterly results on Wednesday.

In 2021, Robinhood also acquired Say Technologies, the company behind say.com, the service that powered shareholder-submitted calls for Tesla back in 2019.

Coinbase, which, like Robinhood, made its public market debut in 2021 with a focus on its retail users and investors, began its call last week with questions from shareholders.

And AMC, one of the most prominent companies in the meme stock craze, mixes in several questions from shareholders during its quarterly call. Its meme stock counterpart GameStop, for its part, hasn't taken questions from analysts or shareholders following quarterly results since December 2020.
And taking questions from investors isn't the only way conference calls have changed through the years.

Years before Tesla's move to bring in shareholder questions, Netflix began its own innovation in the space, tasking a single analyst or IR exec with hosting what it calls an "earnings interview." The company continues the practice today.

This past weekend, many investors spent hours listening to Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett hold court with shareholders inside a basketball arena in Omaha, Neb. Berkshire has never hosted quarterly earnings calls.

Over the years, the rules have considerably changed regarding how analysts can interact with company management and how companies communicate with the investing public.

In short, more people have more information, and fewer people know anything special.

Corporate communications has boomed. Sell-side research has dwindled. And the research arms of financial firms now resemble media companies, complete with newsletters, podcasts, and their own personalities.
When Musk took his first question from shareholders, the appeal was immediately apparent.

According to a transcript from S&P Global Market Intelligence, the first question was about "service," which Musk had already addressed "at length," according to Tesla's IR head Martin Viecha.

The next question resembled much of the fare executives are accustomed to responding to from Wall Street analysts — "How are you feeling about demand right now across the product line?"

In the five years since this call, the rise of the retail investor and the "meme stock" movement has continued to reshape this quarterly ritual. And Musk, for his part, has turned holding a colorful earnings call into an art form.

Perhaps it's fitting, then, that at the end of Tesla's earnings call last month Viecha announced that it would be his last.
Chart of the day
If you chart the S&P 500's rough April, there's a notable bottom on Friday, April 19. It was the last day before the Fed's quiet period when its officials went silent.

And while the correlation between a muted Fed and happier market might be somewhat spurious — many other factors drive the market — Bank of America put a fresh new chart to something we all know instinctively: In the world of markets, no news is good news.

In this chart, BofA's equity and quant strategy team tracked the median weekly returns against key macro releases like GDP, CPI, PMI, FOMC meetings, retail sales, and jobs reports.
📷
"Since 2014, the S&P 500 has risen 0.6% during weeks with no key macro data releases vs. +0.2% in other weeks on a median basis. So no news is typically good news for stocks," the team, led by Ohsung Kwon, wrote. "Historically, the equity market has favored quiet macro weeks."

Unlike the VIX vs. S&P 500 relationship, which shows an inverse relationship between volatility and stock prices, this chart speaks more directly to what actually causes that volatility: uncertainty. Waiting for the other shoe to drop is stressful.

And in weeks with fewer macro readings to be uncertain about, like this one, stocks have fewer reasons to stray from their historical path up and to the right.
Dispatch from Milken: Top CEOs see risks in investing in the Magnificent Seven
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — What's a glitzy investing conference without a little Mag Seven banter?

"The risk is simple — those stocks don't do well," Avenue Capital Group founder and CEO Marc Lasry told Yahoo Finance at the Milken Institute Global Conference on Monday.

Lasry was answering a question about the risk of overcrowding into tech names such as the Magnificent Seven.

"What has happened is when people are nervous, they invest in things that they know really well and they believe are going to be around," Lasry added. "But I don't know what happens in the next year. I do know on the credit side, you've got all these opportunities."

The former co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, Lasry has been investing in credit markets for more than four decades, giving him a reported net worth of $1.9 billion.

So suffice it to say, Lasry has seen a few investing cycles and market crazes.
And the Mag Seven could be viewed as a craze.

Altogether, the Mag Seven were responsible for about 37% of the S&P 500's 10.2% gain in the first quarter, according to data from S&P Global Indices. In 2023, the cohort constituted roughly two-thirds of the S&P 500's advance.

The optimism on the group reflects profit enthusiasm on everything from Nvidia AI chips to Microsoft's Copilot productivity tool.

But with investors now more closely scrutinizing the Mag Seven amid higher interest rates, shares have come back down to earth.

Explained Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan, "I'm not in the stock picking business. But very few people come in every day and try to buy 45 or 50 P/E stocks. It's just not what we do." (Disclosure: Apollo Global Management is the parent company of Yahoo Finance.)

"I look at the broader trend. We used to have 8,000 public companies. We now have 4,000 public companies," he added. "People think most of the action is in public markets. 80% of companies over a hundred million of revenue and 80% of employment is in private companies."
