The code for this, if anyone wants to check it out for themselves, is in events/machine_age_2.txt. The deposit amounts are in common/deposits/13_machine_age_deposits. The Nanite ship generation is in common/scripted_effects/02_machine_age_effects.
So planet size *really* matters when choosing where to put your Nanite harvesters. Here's what a Nanite deposit goes through as the years pass:
Year 0 (Creating the deposit): If can have mining deposit and no research deposit, 0.1 nanites.
Year 5: Double to 0.2 nanites.
Year 10: If size >= 3, double to 0.4 nanites.
Year 15: If size > 6, double to 0.8 nanites.
Year 20: If size >= 9, double to 1.6 nanites.
Year 25: If size >= 12, 50/50 between spawning two ships or doubling to 3.2 nanites and move to next check.
Year 30+: If size >= 15, spawn 4 ships or double to 6.4 nanites and move to next check.
Year 35+: If size >= 18, spawn 8 ships or double to 12.8 nanites and move on.
Year 40+: If size >= 21, spawn 16 ships or double to 25.2 nanites and move on.
Year 45+: If size >= 25, spawn 32 ships or double to 50.4 nanites and move on.
Year 50+: Spawns 64 ships every 5 years.
To be clear, when a deposit spawns ships, they do not advance to the next tier.
So the big takeaway is that nanites from stations take a long time to actually scale up to decent amounts, and you need at least size 12 planetary bodies for them to produce ships. One thing I hope the devs do is adding planetary size to every planetary body, I dont really see why they would hide it from us since the majority of the time it won't even matter, and it would be really useful for nanotech and for Azaryn as well.

TL;DR: My car overheated in the desert and a AAA-affiliate shop says the engine should be replaced at great cost, and provided a P0117 code and low compression numbers for my cylinders in the diagnosis. While I'm sure that P0117 would be expected, I can't believe that it would be the only one if the engine is blown. I'm pretty sure I'm being scammed.
Back-story: I was driving my 2002 Honda Civic EX with just 119,000 miles 75-80mph until it slowed a bit and would not accelerate. Nearby driver shouted that it was smoking. I pulled over. There was indeed smoke but not a huge cloud and it smelled like oil burning. I had my oil changed the day before. There had been no indication of trouble, the temp indicator was not high and I had been checking because I was in the desert, midday. I had briefly turned on the AC but it had been off for a while because I'm paranoid about overheating. I called AAA and after a long wait I was towed to a AAA-affiliated shop in a small city nearly 200 miles from home. During the wait for the tow after letting it cool for maybe a half-hour, it wouldn't start.
The shop charged $160 for a diagnosis, which they said was catastrophic. They said the radiator had been leaking and there was no coolant, which caused the engine to basically fry. I would need a complete new engine and I got the estimate down to about $6200.
At first I rejected the idea of replacing the engine. However, I was stuck and it seemed my only option since I am not earning a lot right now to get a new car. I left it there with the plan to arrange the financing of this bill and then they would order the enginer and it would take about a week to be done. I took a 7-hour Greyhound bus ride home. But since returning home, I began questioning.
I read the docs they provided and it said the diagnosis ran the computer codes but didn't list them. I messaged to request them and he said it was on the repair order. I checked again, it's not there. He emailed me the repair order with the same ID and timestamp but it had been altered with the addition of the code and some other stuff like my email address that I had just given him.
I reiterated that the code was not on my printout and provided photo of it next to the screen of the emailed repair order and he replied in all caps 'IT IS ON ALL VERSION IN THE SAME SPOT.' Clearly, it's not on my printout though. Red flag.
I assumed that a blown engine would generate a list of codes. The only code is P0117, which relates to the temperature sensor. He also provided in the printout these compression numbers: Cyl 1: 55, Cyl 2: 30, Cyl 3: 50, Cyl 4: 80. He had said they should be at about 200.
I now wonder about the radiator leak because I hadn't seen leaks in my parking space, and they may have checked coolant during the oil change (not sure). The shop had gotten it to start, which also makes me wonder if it's really in that bad of condition.
I had trusted this place as a AAA shop but checked the reviews on Google. The average rating is over 4 stars but there are plenty of 1-star "ripoff" reviews. I am now arranging my friend with a GMC pickup to drive up there and tow it back, and not let him know until we get there because now I don't trust them at all. I'll just keep stalling.
Does one P0117 code seem strange? My local mechanic says the alteration of the repair order alone is sketchy.

I am a mechanical engineering student currently doing an internship as a controls intern. Whilst doing my internship I have realised that whilst I do enjoy control systems all of the cutting edge work I was interested in is overkill in most systems and most control problems get solved by slapping on a PID or often just a PI controller and altering the gains till it works. I also didn't enjoy that all of the logic was created in simulink and then C code was generated to be compiled and flashed onto controllers.

2024.05.14 22:30 Potential-Page-3640 for a 25$ permit fee ill drag out the courts and waste more than 25$ of their time

so a tree fell on my shed so i took the pieces and started building a new shed out the old wood, im building it about 4 inches from the house but not touching the house, someone called code enforcement and said the shed was touching the house...the inspector guy comes out and i show him its not touching the house...so he tried to say i need a permit just to build the shed....i have a pink notice of violation with the ordinance that reads

Any party who shall perform such work, or who causes any such work to be done prior to obtaining the required permit or prior to making the necessary filing shall be held in violation of this chapter and subject to the penalties stated herein.

Any owner, person, firm, corporation, or contractor who wishes to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, to include propane or natural gas generators, the installation of which is regulated by the technical codes, shall be properly licensed and first make the necessary application for inspection (filing) with the appropriate section of the department before commencement of any work. Any party who shall perform such work, or who causes any such work to be done prior to obtaining the required permit or prior to making the necessary filing shall be held in violation of this chapter and subject to the penalties stated herein.
(c)
Any owner, person, firm, corporation, or contractor who wishes to replace the roof covering on a one- or two-family dwelling where the replaced roof covering exceeds fifty (50) percent of the total roof area shall make an application to the Code Official. The roof covering shall be in compliance with the Building and Related Construction Codes of Jefferson Parish. Documentation of compliance with the codes shall be provided by photographs or videos which are location verified with geotagging and digitally uploaded to the Jefferson Parish permitting system. Any party who shall perform such work, or who causes any such work to be done, prior to obtaining the required permit or prior to making the necessary filing shall be held in violation of this chapter and subject to the penalties stated herein.
to me it appears they think its constructed on to the occupancy of the house when its not touching the house as if i was adding a room to the house

2024.05.14 22:30 ENickiAz It’s official, my dad is a Boomer.

He is, generationally, a Boomer. He’s had Boomer tendencies, but he retired last year, and the tendencies are becoming full-blown. It’s hard to watch.
He worked for the same company for 45+ years. Weekends, overtime. His life was eat, sleep, work, church. That is about it. Finally retired due to medical reasons. Has always been conservative leaning, gun-toting, religious, and is a Trump supporter. I’m more liberal-leaning, but pretty moderate. We have differing opinions on politics, social responsibility, religion, etc. I live across the country from my parents and we avoid the touchy subjects, so have been able to get along pretty well.
Covid happened (before he retired, but this was the start of it), and he became a staunch anti (Covid) vaxxer - all other vaccinations are ok, though. I can almost get it - it was developed quickly, experimental status. Blah blah. I’m a scientist, I was good with them, know how mRNA works, etc. Didn’t matter what I told him. But whatever. To each their own. His decision. Just don’t tell me what I should do. After COVID vaccines were made widely available to everyone, he sent me a 60 minute video from BitChute of some crazy “doctors” talking about how dangerous the COVID vaccines are. Tried to convince me to not get them. Got mad when I poked holes in the video, source of info, etc. He sent me some off his rocker comments about the China-virus, Chinese killing female babies, and something about Bill Gates being behind it. It was literally a 6 line text message paragraph, and there was so much to unpack. We bickered, and then dropped it. He once said to me “I don’t understand your leftist liberal leanings - we didn’t raise you that way”. Like, wut? Ffs, I have a good career, healthy marriage, am a productive member of society. I am not an addict or in jail. There are worse things than being a little left leaning, me thinks.
Anyway, now that he has been retired, he does not know what to do with himself. He is on his phone CONSTANTLY. God knows what tin-foil hat wearing, extremist bs he is reading and buying into. He and my mom recently came to visit. While they were here, my mom came to me and was like “your dad is on the phone getting scammed and he won’t listen to me”. He’s on speaker, and I’m listening in. He has his credit card out. He’s talking about a password, security code, etc. I tell him to hang up. He does, and goes on to say why he thinks it’s legitimate. I tell him to call the company office he works with locally for his account and to ask them about it. Sure enough, it’s a scam. He then tries to save face and say he was planning to call and check. Bullshit. He said in the moment he thought it was legit! There were so many red flags. He won’t go to the “how to detect a scam” seminar at the senior center because he doesn’t think he needs it.
He and my mom go home, and next thing I know, he’s texting me asking how many COVID vaccines my toddler has had and that he is concerned for her and us because he has been reading “studies” that link cancer with the third COVID shot. I lose it. Ask him where he is getting his info and to send me the studies. He doesn’t. He drops the issue, but not before my husband saw steam coming out of my ears. He is also one of those who pushed “college college college” on me and my sister. God knows what crazy shit he is reading online, but now he has also bought into the “educational system indoctrinating leftist ideals” stuff, probably because his kids have a different worldview than he does. Like, dude. You pushed it on us. Now you are mad we have a different perspective?

2024.05.14 22:29 naftalibp Growing pains from a primarily backend

Story time.
I've been working on integrating voice into my fullstack web application, an ai therapy app leaning on OpenAI's latest API's (with some custom features built around it, like memory, fine-tuning, and researched prompting), and after enough initial success, I've begun implementing my roadmap of features, the first of which is voice integration.
Frustratingly, the front end was really simple. Just GPT-ed my way into some javascript library that leveraged the browser microphone and it worked like magic. Only after realized I need to check for cross browser compatibility, darn it. Oh well, proof of concept first, testing after. But essentially smooth and easy.
Then came the backend. I wanted to use OpenAI's TTS model, since it sounded good and I'm already set up with the api keys and all, so why go to the hassle of using Amazon's Polly or some other service? So my idea, ridiculously flawed in hindsight, was simply to pass ever chunk of generated text immediately to the TTS api, and then return it together with the chunk, streaming both pieces of data to the frontend.
Although it 'worked', in minutes, it was horribly choppy. And having little experience with frontend (thank you GPT, for being my massive crutch that allowed me develop it all with minimal deeper understanding), I assume it was some buffering issue, like I wasn't retrieving the data from the backend fast enough. So I kept playing around and experimenting with buffering. But also GPT kept sending me back to the backend to verify the data was being sent correctly.
No amount of buffering solved the problem. A short break and some calming breaths, and I thought I figured it out. TTS isn't built to work on individual chunks, which are best case scenario single words. It's designed to work on full texts, or at the very least, sentenes. So I refactored my code to generate chunks until end of sentence was identified, then process with TTS, and then send to frontend.
Works quite well.
I wish it was deployed to prod, but unfortunely some bugs still need ironing out and testing before going to production is a big deal once paying customers are in play. And as an automation engineer by profession, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I introduced critical regressions haha.
Anyway, I'm quite proud of my journey, always learning new things, which is exciting and fulfilling, just like the business side of it. Anyway, if you got this far, check it out, and let me know what else I've done wrong as a noob!

"All systems optimal," he transmitted over the secure channel. "Initiating mineral analysis."
The asteroid belt's composition data began filtering through his neural implants. There were indeed rich seams of ractogen to be mined here, enough to fuel the Kin's industry for generations. But something else caused his synthetic receptors to flare - faint traces of unknown machine coding, unlike anything in his databanks.
Orgun's fingers danced over his armored forelimbs, probing the alien data with cyber-mantras of authentication. Whatever this code was, it predated even the dark ages of technology on ancient Terra. Could it be...an echo of the Ancestors themselves?
A deep sense of reverence overcame him. The Kin had come to this uncharted frontier not just for material wealth, but to uncover the secrets of their long-lost progenitors. Orgun would remain ever-vigilant, both in the cyber-realm and the material one, to ensure their quest did not fall into peril.
For he was a cyber-devotee of the Votann creed. And the great virtual vigil over this expedition had only just begun.
