2024.05.13 23:41 fievelm Three bucks

A family friend (70) asked me for help with her internet after her & her husband returned from their snowbird home. I hadn't seen them in a long time so I drove right over to their absolutely massive house.
She gave me a tour of all the work they'd had done, while bemoaning her $800/mo property taxes. When she showed me her husband's old office, a detached ~300sqft outbuilding, she explained she would be turning it into a rental and listing it for $1400/mo. This place is in the middle of nowhere and the building would have no privacy, living in their driveway essentially. Absolutely crazypants.
Their wifi router had given up the ghost while they were in their vaca home, so I drove down to the local big box store and grabbed a cheapo. Setup the new router, configured the new wifi on all of their devices, TVs, etc. About two hours work with the shopping trip.
I got an earful of all the latest talking points from Fox News while I worked, one of which included something about Sesame Street being too woke? I don't fucking know.
I handed her the receipt for the router, with tax it was $54.30. ANYBODY else and I would have just said, "It's on me, welcome home friends.". But these people can afford $50. Their garage is bigger than my house.
She gets her wallet out and starts laying bills down on the counter in front of me.
She lays down a $50, starts sifting through her wallet, lays down a $5. Keeps sifting through bills, and pulls out three $1 bills and lays them all out for me.
I grabbed $55 and said, "This'll do, you put down too much.".
She goes, "Oh no, the rest is for YOU! Thank you so much!"
In no way was I expecting to be paid for labor here. These are family friends. But that $3 tip was just insulting.
$0 would say: "We're friends, we dont pay each other" $100 would say: "I appreciate that your time has value"
But $3? That's what I leave for a tip at a restaurant when I'm ticked off. I know she didn't mean anything rude by it, but SHEESH. Somehow her concept of cash value sits in the extreme both ways.

2024.05.13 21:13 Mr_Noh (Greenville County, SC) Oven not working right, property manager not helping

The oven that comes with the property I'm renting is having troubles with getting up to the set temperature. Until a few weeks ago it worked fine, then it started taking much longer to preheat, adding about ten minutes to the preprogrammed six minute preheat time.
I contacted the property manager about it, and they said they'd send someone over to check. They finally did after some prodding (that's an issue too, but for not for this post), but said that they didn't find anything wrong with it. I wasn't present when it was checked, but I'm pretty sure they just sent over their regular general maintenance guy, who AFAIK isn't trained as an appliance technician.
(My suspicion is that whoever came just turned on the oven and stuck their hand inside to feel the heat, ignoring the oven thermometer I put in there to verify that there was a problem in the first place.)
SC's Residential Landlord and Tenant Act doesn't qualify an electric oven working improperly as "essential" so 27-40-630 doesn't apply, and I have nowhere else to go so 27-40-610 (written notice of problem, with lease termination 14 days after receipt of said notice if problem isn't addressed) is of no help.
Other than figuring out which lawyer(s) around here actually do rental law and shell out money I don't have, is there anything else I can do?

2024.05.13 16:48 AnIntelleltualNibba Alberta Car Accident with a Rental

I got into a car accident with a rental car in Alberta. I am from Ontario and have an Ontario driver's license. I did not have any insurance on the car, my credit card company does not cover me, and I do not have insurance in Ontario either (I am a student and never have owned a car). I wanted to explore what legal options I had or what I should do next.
Edit: There was no other vehicle in the accident, the car did not have snow tires and it began to snow, as a result I lost control and hit the curb on the side of the highway

2024.05.13 15:50 cpharrigan My experience with 2013 Hyundai Sonata Engine Failure (Theta Recall - Settlement)

We have been the only/original owner of the vehicle. the Car has about 108k miles. My vehicle broke down about 1k miles from my home on a cross country trip my son was taking. It was initially towed to a repair shop who immediately told me the engine was seized. I became more aware of the engine recall and called the Hyundai Customer Care Center for engine recalls and opened a claim. They answered the phone quickly and were fairly responsive (although not always completely helpful). I wont be able to put all the details here but for people can reach out to me with questions:
  1. you have to tow the car to a Hyundai service center to be "inspected". They wont set this up for you.
  2. The dealership "inspection" seems to be confirming the seized engine, sending the vehicle maintenance records (per CarFax) and taking a picture of the engine. They will look at the color in the engine and see if sludge appears.
  3. I performed several of my own oil changes which were not appearing on the CarFax report and they questioned "periods where the car wasnt maintained". I explained I did them myself, but didn't have receipts from purchasing oil, filters, etc from many years ago. they seemed to indicate this shouldnt be a problem.
  4. my claim was rejected. It seems that the settlement allows for rejection of claims based on "neglect" (lack of maintenance) or failure to install the KSDS sensor (a recall item on the vehicle). I had the sensor installed, but the rejection was based on the periods where I couldn't prove oil changes occurred.
  5. I found out there was a formal appeal process through BBB (search for: BBB Class Action Arbitration Program)
  6. I filed an appeal. It is an all written process and can take 60-ish days to finish.
  7. They wouldn't provide me with the CarFax report, but I paid for my own. I found the periods they were concerned about and looked through my credit card records and my Autozone account history and found receipts for the purchase of oil, filters, etc. I also had my mechanic perform an review of the photo and provide a statement indicating the car was well maintained.
  8. I won my appeal and the decision is binding. You should be detailed in your appeal. I can share what I documented. I am now waiting for the car to be repaired. It is my understanding that they are responsible to ship the car to the dealership closest to me following the repair (because the car is 1k miles from my home).
  9. Winning the appeal also allows me to submit for reimbursement of expenses related to the towing to Hyundai and rental car expenses (since the car broke down far away from my home). I have submitted the expenses/receipts online last week. I have not received any response (although they confirmed receipt of the claim). I believe there is a limit for rental car expense per day.
  10. while the car is being repaired they should provide you with a loaner (if one is available). The problem for me is the car is being repaired far from my home.
I was a little lost going through this process so happy to help anyone else. Just a few points:

2024.05.13 07:53 cherylc522 Cancel rental agreement before start

I have a question about a rental agreement. I'm living in the US, I agreed to a 6 month rental in ontario starting june 1st. The rental agreement has the date as may 25th saying that's when we all signed it but today is may 12th. I need to back out of the agreement and the landlord wants to keep the last months rent we gave as deposit, but they are also asking we pay June's rent because they have to find someone else to rent. Is that legal? Are we responsible for June if the agreement hasnt technically been signed since it says may 25th as the signing date and since we gave them time to find someone else?

2024.05.13 06:46 Twister_Seester AISH + CERB/CRB - friend told to repay $16,000 total.

I’ve been on AISH myself for 9-10 months now and we have a family friend who’s been on AISH since 2016.
He has been self employed going back to 2014 and has submitted tax returns like clock work on the 1st day allowed every year.
He just got the dreaded letter from CRA indicating he needs to repay $16,000 of the total $19,000 for benefits approved for CERB and CRB.
While on AISH he is eligible for approx $1800 per month but he says the majority of that financial benefit is clawed back dependent upon his self employment earnings he reports monthly.
This may be the worst situation I’ve seen with a benefit review to date.
Normally he receives as little as $100 a month from AISH to a maximum of $400 in his off season which is typically January - February - March - April - May and months from June through the end of December he averages around $100 a month.
So when COVID hit before the lockdown was announced he was making approx $2400-2600 a month. During his peak season he makes $2800-3100.
The problem here is how his AISH benefits changed from the drop combined with how his income dropped.
He tried contacted anyone at CRA that could provide assistance to the specific questions of how AISH benefits would affect the receipt of the CERB and CRB benefits.
He said he did call in and talk to the people who asked questions specific to review and was explicitly told they couldn’t guarantee he was eligible but from the information he provided it two agents told him to apply for the benefits if wasn’t 100% sure hed just need to repay benefits he wasn’t entitled to if any when a review happened.
The problem here. As his income drops his AISH benefits drop.
Now he’s not being forced to repay every single period.
Just the periods where the AISH benefit + employment income made him ineligible.
The problem here is though.
Depending on how it’s calculated a person on AISh and even ODSP I believe would have to calculate multiple things to determine eligibility.
What I don’t get is his income would have dropped by 50% total for every period of CRB but from how they calculated there ends up being several periods where he would have Earned maybe $10 to $20 more than allowed.
The other problem is the income reduction requirement.
They look at the 2-3 months before COVID and his income was approx $2100 to $2440.
So they were calculating the reduction based on this number as they indicate it was the level of employment income that he lost as a direct correlation to COVID.
They won’t let him use his summer income where he made $2800 to $3060 from June 2019 to December 2019.
He was told he can use it for the qualifications of the $5000 income but the reduction eligibility is at the discretion of the review officer.
I am trying to assist him to provide evidence for a review as I’ve successfully won my own case in 2021.
I just don’t get it. You basically need to read their mind on how they calculate the reduction amounts and how they determine Covid and Covid only dropping the income.
And I hate to say it. Being on AISH he can’t afford even $25 a month repayment. He and his partner live in a subsidized rental unit with a program through the city of Calgary.
He also did not apply for every period which is why the repayment is $16,000 and not more like $28,000.
Have any AISH or ODSP people successfully challenged the review?

2024.05.13 06:10 Realistic-Piglet4751 UHAUL stole my rental truck and damaged my items.

On April 1st, I rented a 19ft truck from U-Haul for a period of 3 days. However, due to an illness, I had to extend the reservation, which was granted by the U-Haul manager. I continued to pay for the rental and was not charged any late fees.
On April 17th, I received an email from U-Haul, closing out my rental and thanking me for being their customer. A few minutes later, my son called to inform me that the U-Haul truck was no longer parked by the Hospital. I then received another email from U-Haul, informing me that I had rented a storage locker and received the first month free, which was a promotion by U-Haul.
To my surprise, U-Haul recovered the truck with all my items inside and proceeded to rent me a storage unit for my items. Unfortunately, they threw all my boxes and furniture in the storage unit, which caused damage to equipment worth over $10,000. The boxes were not stacked but instead, they were tossed carelessly.
I am confused as to why U-Haul recovered the truck since I was current on my payment, and they had never charged me a late fee. Moreover, they did not attempt any communication with me, and actually, I overpaid $590, which U-Haul has documented on my final receipt. What's more, U-Haul also forged my signature by signing the storage agreement without my knowledge.
I need to be compensated for the damaged items, any thoughts or similar experience?

2024.05.13 02:41 kyonkun_denwa Insurance company is refusing to fix our car, even when market value exceeds cost to repair

My brother was recently involved in a minor accident in his 2011 Volvo S80. He was driving on the Gardiner Expressway in stop-and-go traffic and someone rear-ended him. The damage is not super severe, the car can still be driven, but it needs a bunch of new parts, repair to the trunk lid, and repairs to the rear quarter panel. We took it to a reputable body shop and the cost they quoted us was approximately $8,000.
This car is not very common, and my brother was only able to find a single listing for a similar S80 in the province of Ontario (for approximately $10k). We engaged a third party appraiser who I've previously used (when my wife's Mini Cooper was totalled in 2022) to come up with a value for the car. The appraiser said given the condition, mileage, recent parts upgrades, etc, it was worth $12,500.
The insurance company has informed my brother that they want to total the car. They've offered my brother $9k for the vehicle if we total it, and $2k for the car if he wants to do the repairs himself and re-certify it as a salvage title. This, to me, seems insulting; the $2k offer is basically scrap value. And the insurance company's own assessed value exceeds the cost to repair. The adjuster is essentially refusing to acknowledge the third party appraiser's report, saying they have their own "internal process" to determine the value, and they are refusing to negotiate, saying their offer is final. Furthermore, the adjuster has lied to us on multiple occasions, stating that the body shop claimed the car was "not repairable"; however, we have been in contact with the shop and they are adamant that they made no such claim. We've tried to contact the adjuster's manager, but she simply is not responding to emails. I get the feeling that rather than restore the value of the vehicle as they are supposed to, the insurance company is trying to minimize their own cash outflow and essentially screw us out of a few thousand dollars in value. The insurance company has even tried to pressure my brother to close the file by immediately discontinuing rental car coverage (this has minimal effect on him since he lives in downtown Toronto and can get around fine without a car).
When my wife's Mini was totalled in 2022, I found the negotiations very straightforward. The adjuster (same company, different employee) initially offered $16k for the car, I countered with the third-party appraisal that showed the car was worth $18k, and we settled on the higher number. But this time around, things are much more difficult. The adjuster refuses to budge and seems to be acting in a deliberately officious manner, and the insurance company is being very, very opaque on the appeals process.
I'm wondering what our options are. Not only do we have a dollar amount that I feel we are being screwed out of, but this car has sentimental value to us as well, as it belonged to a family friend who has since passed. How do we appeal the insurance company's decision to total the car? How can we get them to acknowledge that their offer is too low, and force them to repair it rather than try to sell it off for parts? If they refuse to cooperate, what information and documentation would we need to launch a small claims court action against the insurance company? And at what point should we consider engaging a lawyer?
As a bonus, does anyone know why insurance companies have suddenly started acting like such jerks?

2024.05.12 23:24 ProblemWithMyBrain Can landlord sue for normal wear and tear if it is written in the lease?

Just wondering if a landlord can sue for something that is considered normal wear and tear if the lease agreement says that the tenant is liable?
I remember for example if it’s written in the lease agreement that the tenant cannot have dogs, the law trumps the agreement and dogs can still be allowed in the rental unit, wondering if it’s the same for normal wear and tear in Ontario.

2024.05.12 22:24 Unhappy-Exit-4597 Move out list advice

We have lived in this rental for 2.5 years. Closing on a house soon so we have decided to leave. We have kept this house immaculate. No damage what so ever. The rental company sent us a list of things we have to do before we move. Am I crazy or is this a little over board? Trim bushes(not that bad) Pressure wash house and drive way Professional carpet cleaning (with receipt as proof) Professional flea treatment because we had a dog (no fleas though) Paint the walls if there’s any holes Replace any broken blinds Replace any burnt out light bulbs There’s other things but not to crazy. I just feel like those are things they handle after we move out. I’m 100% going to have the house spotless but I feel like they’re asking a lot.

2024.05.12 19:54 SnooPets7711 Parking Rental in Ontario

Hi All,
I rented a parking space in a condo in Ontario, under a 12 month contract (from Oct 2023 to Oct 2024). The owner of the parking space has now informed me that he’s selling his property and needs the parking spot back. The parking rental agreement does allow “Either the Tenant or Landlord may terminate the agreement by providing 2 months notice to the other”. He has provided me with 2 months notice and wants it back in July (before the lease end date of Oct 2024).
I guess (maybe stupidly) I assumed the 2 month termination notice period was only if the contract was beyond the initial lease period (I.e., Oct 2024) and was on a monthly basis, similar to a tenant agreement for a home. Otherwise why would the contract have a lease end date if it can be terminated earlier.
Apologies if this is a dumb question but I wanted to see if I have any options here, or if I have to give it back by July?
Many thanks!
edit: thanks everyone! I misunderstood. I’ll start looking for another parking space!

2024.05.12 15:05 mutumu5591 The Nightmare That Is Kampala House Hunting

I have been searching for a house to rent in the areas of Kisaasi, Kyanja, Kungu, Kulambiro, and surrounding neighborhoods in Kampala, Uganda. My budget range is between 500,000 and 750,000 Ugandan Shillings (approximately $132 - $198 USD). The primary reason for focusing my search in these areas is that I own a business located in Kisaasi, so I need to live nearby.
Yesterday(Saturday the 11th of May), I reached out to a broker who had previously assisted me in finding a shop, hoping they could help me find a suitable house as well. During our phone conversation, the broker mentioned having four houses to show me that fit within my stated budget range. We agreed on the pricing, and I met up with the broker to view these properties.
The first house we looked at was located in Kyanja and priced at 600,000 UGX. However, when we arrived, the house was currently occupied by tenants. The broker assured me that I could view the property the following day, which I did. Upon inspection, I found that the house had issues with mold growth and paint chipping from both the interior and exterior walls, presenting potential health hazards for any occupants. Additionally, the kitchen appeared to be an afterthought in the design, poorly integrated into the overall layout.
The second house, also situated in Kyanja, was approximately one kilometer away from the main road. Not only was the location somewhat isolated, but the area did not feel particularly safe. While the house itself was decently sized, the kitchen once again seemed like an ill-conceived afterthought. The asking price for this property was 690,000 UGX.
The third and fourth houses we viewed were located in Kisaasi. Unfortunately, neither property was particularly impressive. They were both quite small, lacked adequate lighting, and were situated far away from the main road, which could present accessibility issues.
At this point, I began to doubt whether this particular broker was truly familiar with the area and my specific requirements. Against my better judgment, I decided to reach out to a different brokerage firm that I had been seeing advertised on TikTok. Before proceeding any further, I insisted on meeting them at their physical office location to ensure their legitimacy. Surprisingly, they did indeed have an actual office space. I explained my housing needs and budget constraints, and they informed me that they had three properties that seemed to match my criteria. After paying the required fees and obtaining a receipt, we embarked on viewing these houses.
The first property we visited was located in Kulambiro. Situated near the main tarmac road, the house was decently sized. However, as had become a recurring issue, the kitchen was essentially non-existent – a mere afterthought in the design. The broker quoted a price of 500,000 UGX for this house. Initially, I considered it a potentially viable option given its convenient location and my budget constraints. However, just as we were inspecting the property, the caretaker arrived and informed us that the house had already been rented out to someone else. In hindsight, this situation raised suspicions that it may have been a carefully orchestrated ploy between the broker and the caretaker.
The second house we viewed was located in Kungu and priced at 800,000 UGX. Despite the cost, the property itself was quite underwhelming and failed to meet my expectations.
As for the third house in Kyanja, I did not actually get the opportunity to see it in person despite going to the place. According to the caretaker, someone had paid for and secured the rental overnight, leaving the broker seemingly 'surprised' by this sudden development.
The fourth and any remaining houses I was shown continued to be disappointments, offering nothing noteworthy to report.
In the end, after spending approximately 200,000 UGX on broker fees and transportation costs, I was unable to secure a suitable rental property. From this experience, I have made the following observations:
  1. Brokers often lack integrity and will prioritize making a commission over genuinely fulfilling the client's needs and requirements. This seems to be a vicious cycle, with dishonest practices being a common occurrence regardless of which brokerage firm one engages with.
  2. There appears to be an acute housing shortage in Kampala, with demand far outstripping the available supply of rental properties. This imbalance likely contributes to the stark disparity between the cost of housing and the actual quality/condition of the units.
  3. Many of the houses I viewed were of substandard quality, with poorly designed layouts, lack of basic amenities (such as properly integrated kitchens), and overall inadequate living conditions – yet commanding prices that seem unjustified given their shortcomings.
Based on my previous experience living in Nairobi, a budget of around $185 (which is equivalent to 700,000 Ugandan Shillings) would typically be sufficient to rent a good one-bedroom apartment with a separate kitchen, a spacious balcony that can accommodate a washing machine, as well as additional amenities like an elevator and a rooftop terrace. In fact, when I lived in Nairobi, I was paying only $175 for an apartment with such features.
In comparison, the houses I viewed in Kampala within my budget range of 500,000 to 750,000 Ugandan Shillings (approximately $132 to $198) were substantially lacking in quality, often with poorly designed kitchens, smaller living spaces, and a general absence of modern conveniences like elevators or common areas. This stark contrast highlights the disparity between the housing standards and rental costs in Kampala versus what one might expect for a similar budget in a city like Nairobi.
The root cause of these issues may be linked to the low GDP per capita in Uganda, which stands at approximately $946 USD. With the average Ugandan contributing only around 300,000 UGX (approximately $79 USD) per month to the economy, there appears to be a significant wealth gap. A small portion of the population can afford high-quality housing, while the vast majority live in poverty, with little to no options for decent, reasonably priced accommodation.
In light of these challenges, I am appealing to you good people of Reddit for recommendations or insights that could aid my ongoing search for a suitable rental property. I remain open to considering studio apartments as well, provided they are conveniently located near my place of business and fall within my stated budget range. Any guidance or suggestions would be highly appreciated, as I find myself at my wits' end after this disheartening experience.

2024.05.11 16:19 MaximusRubz Loaner/Rental Car Coverage with Dealership (while waiting for delivery)

[GTA, ONTARIO]
Hey, we're going through this situation right now.
Looking for some advice/success stories
We've already put down a deposit and signed the bill of sale (May 4th) - this is because the sales rep told us that the car would be here in a week.
According to the sales rep, the car is at the port as of April 26th and it's just waiting to get to the dealership. (He told us the date a few days later via phone call - not at the time we were negotiating a deal)
So not sure where along the process it is (i.e. Halifax waiting for a train/truck? Or in Vaughan/Scarborough Railyard waiting to get to dealership)
We're currently renting a car (due to a car accident) - insurance has stopped paying for the rental since they paid out the settlement. So we're paying out of pocket now.
I've been thinking of the following three options - please let me know thoughts, concerns, etc.
1) ask the dealership to cover the rental cost? (50% to 100% of cost)
2) ask the dealership to reduce the final price of the vehicle by our rental costs? (Again - 50% to 100%)
3) ask the dealership to refund our deposit and cancel the bill of sale?

2024.05.11 10:05 DisasterNaive1971 I (25F) don't know what to do with my bf (30M)

So we met online in July 2023 and started talking. I'm from Finland and he's from Estonia so we're relatively close even though in different countries. Everything went nicely, we were chatting for a few weeks until he completely disappeared for almost 2 months. Then 1st of october he came back saying he had a heart attack and mental issues. We continued talking from there because I was trying but didn't manage to get over him in those 2 months and I believed his story so it kept me attached. During our early stages he always talked about his own, 45m² apartment and told me he is born in 1995.
In december 2023 we were planning to meet but he disappeared again. I called the emergency line and hospitals in Estonia to find him in case something had happened. In that situation I realized I didn't know his address, last name or anything. I managed to find a person on facebook that I was 99% sure was him based on his interests so I told the cops this as his last name. It was him and they found him. They went to his door asking if he's okay and that his gf is dead worried and he told the cops he doesn't know me. I wad devastated but decided to believe him and gave him space so he came back around a few days later.
Finally we met when I went there in January and since then we've been meeting regularly. It just kept bugging me how some of the things sounded that he told me. For example, the heart attack thing, I wanted to believe but I have an education in health care field and one of my specialties is physiology and the whole story just didn't add up so it kept bugging me.
When the police went to him in december I also discovered FROM THEM that he's actually born in 1994, not 1995 and that he's living in a rental/airbnb company's apartment so he cannot own it and he never did. I even asked him about it and told him I went to the company's website and they don't have bigger than like 20m² and he still kept insisting that the site must be wrong... But eventually he confessed the age thing and also the apartment situation. I was so disappointed that he lied but these were so ridiculous that I didn't think too much of it back then.
Everything went smoothly for a while until he told me he's playing poker online. I asked if it's a problem and he became very defensive about it so I already knew. I just told him that as long as it's under control I don't mind and he got very offended that I called it gambling (but it is what it is???) Oh well it wasn't a problem, at least I didn't know it was. Then we started having our first real arguments and one of them was money. He's always staying at my place and I'm paying rent, utilities and bills and everything including netflix etc other broadcast services and he promised to pay all our food which he has. But somehow during this argument he told me I'm taking advantage of him financially which I responded by showing him all the expenses I'm paying and then the grocery receipts(also we eat out a lot) and they were pretty much even so he did apologize. We had no more arguments about money except when in January he promised to pay half of my accommodation because I'm a student so I don't really have a lot extra. Also, he didn't want me to his apartment because he didnt like his place(?) so we took an airbnb. Although I stayed for a week and paid like 600€ for the nice airbnb and he never paid me the half even tho he wad staying there with me. Then he promised again a few weeks ago but then when I asked "I remember you told me you could help me with the 300€ you kinda owe me from the airbnb so I have bills due so could I get it" and he lashed out on me saying that I act weird and refused to pay because he was being paranoid that I'm tricking the money from him and then leaving??? And before that he was at my place and we had an argument when I asked for help with the dishes in the kitchen after baking and he refused and then I told him that if he doesn't want to contribute in any way, I don't feel like baking those cinnamon rolls for him. I said it with a calm tone and then he lashed out and said I'm acting like a bitch. The next morning I woke up and didn't say a word and he only made himself breakfast and when I asked why didn't he make any for me, he just said I should've opened my mouth and asked (yeah true but why couldn't he ask?) So I had enough and I did something I shouldn't have done: I got up and poured his breakfast to the trash and told him to leave. Then he rage packed and kept calling me a bitch and insulting me in other ways and rushed out. We didn't talk until the next day and then he apologized and we moved on from that.
Then a bit under 2 weeks ago, a week after he left he wanted to come clean about things. He explained that he had lied about so many things. He has a gambling problem and he had kept from me that he has a 40K debt taken for poker. He also never had a heart attack, he did have heart problems but he didn't seem to understand how much worse an actual heart attack is and how much worry it would cause to lie about such a thing... I took almost a week to think about everything and want to forget those lies and built trust again but I'm so tired and I have those breakdowns when I just want to fall asleep and not wake up because this all seems like too much. I also want to point out that he immediately started acting on the gambling problem by creating himself a global restriction that prevents any gambling anywhere with his ID and I saw it happen. I also told him I will not contribute with a single penny to paying off his debt and he knows it. I just feel like I'm a bit lost and I suggested couple's therapy to process all of this and first he said yes but later recently when he came over a few days ago he said that "we don't need it, we can just talk the things through ourselves" but I think I really need therapy.

2024.05.10 22:14 Mission-Iron-7509 How to Find Appropriate Rental Price?

My family has purchased a 1-bedroom condo to rent. After 2 months we haven’t had any interested offers. We’re at the conclusion the asking price is too high.
How to calculate an appropriate rental price?
It’s in Southern Ontario, large city, very close to school, groceries, 15 minutes drive from a large mall. If you need more info just ask, or could point me in a direction to find the answer.

2024.05.10 22:02 ChronicallyWheeler PCCC beg-a-thon now on

So given a previous post said a PCCC donation was added to a user's order without agreeing to it, Loblaw must be doing a PCCC beg-a-thon... one more reason to avoid this company. Unlike Walmart and Sobeys, Loblaw does not, as far as I know, match customers' donations at all in any of their charity beg-a-thons, nor do their franchisees, e.g. the owners of the No Frills store here in Renfrew, Ontario. I know the local Metro and Giant Tiger stores do beg-a-thons maybe once or twice a year, but not sure if they match donations either, and Walmart Canada usually has a chain-wide ceiling on matching donations when they do match.

Re the donation being added, when there is a beg-a-thon going on at a Loblaw store, there will be a small card on top of the point-of-sale (POS) system's cashier display, above the keyboard. On one side is usually a "please donate" message for the customer, and on the other is the verbiage for the cashier, with a barcode below it. The cashier would have added the "donation" by scanning that barcode, or keying in the barcode's digits manually. This is why it's important to watch the cashier scanning/entering your items, and the customer display (the LCD monitor near the receipt printer) which shows a "virtual receipt" with the last few items scanned/entered... you never know when a cashier will double-scan an item and not void the second scan, or ring up a charity donation without you agreeing to it.

I know most of these beg-a-thons in general across the industry are done mainly for good PCSESG/etc. and not a tax break, but what they rake in from customers' donations is a drop in the bucket, and corporate and/or the franchisees could easily give that much on their own and be done with it, without asking customers to donate. To me, giving their own funds would look a lot better on a retail/grocery company than begging customers to chip in.

Also worth noting is that when the LCBO does beg-a-thons, provincial legislation forbids "the liquor store" giving their own funds to any cause; every cent of their net revenue must go to the province.

2024.05.10 18:13 philosopherrrrr Diminution of value claim seems unjustified

TL:DR: Rental Car company is asking for $3,000 diminution of value for an accident I was at fault for, are they allowed to ask for any amount without proof of value, or what are my rights?
Background: I was in a car accident, determined as my fault with a rental car from "A" Company. My insurance paid for the labor and parts to repair the damages. However, the A Company was also asking for a diminution of value of $3,000. My insurance company was not covering this so I then came responsible for this cost. However, it seemed odd for a few reasons; the cost was very high and also too specific (after speaking with my friend who is a insurance claims adjuster he mentioned that these amounts are usually based on market value of sales/repairs, etc. So, it's rare to be an exact amount such as this because these values vary greatly). I'm a US Servicemember stationed in Germany, where this happened.
I have since (about 4 months now), been asking for any documentation to prove or validate their request for this amount ($3,000). The only documents they have garnered are the repair receipts (parts, labor, etc), nothing that indicates any evidence or market information to warrant asking $3k for the diminution of value.
I have read the rental agreement and there is nothing stated which mentions a diminution of value.
Legally, do I have grounds to contest this?
Do they have the right to ask for this amount without provided any documents to support their claim?
Should I seek legal counsel? If so, what type of lawyer?
Thank you for the help
