Buckle up as we dive deep into the stats, odds, and a sprinkle of humor to predict the outcome of this high-stakes NBA clash.

Team Overview

Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets, often referred to as the "Mile-High City" team, have been a force to reckon with in the NBA. With a solid roster and a home-court advantage that literally takes the breath away (thanks to the altitude), the Nuggets are a formidable opponent.

Key Players

  • Nikola Jokić: The reigning MVP, Jokić is a triple-double machine. His ability to score, rebound, and assist makes him the cornerstone of the Nuggets' offense.
  • Jamal Murray: After recovering from his injury, Murray has been a scoring dynamo, providing the much-needed backcourt firepower.
  • Michael Porter Jr.: Known for his sharpshooting and athleticism, Porter Jr. adds depth to the Nuggets' lineup.

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Timberwolves, on the other hand, have been the perennial underdogs. However, this season, they've shown glimpses of brilliance, making them a team that can't be underestimated.

Key Players

  • Karl-Anthony Towns: The big man with a soft touch, Towns is a double-double machine and the heart of the Timberwolves' offense.
  • Anthony Edwards: The young phenom, Edwards, has been electrifying with his scoring and athleticism.
  • D'Angelo Russell: The floor general, Russell's playmaking and scoring ability are crucial for the Timberwolves' success.

  • Michael Porter Jr. vs. Anthony Edwards: This matchup of young stars will be exciting to watch. Edwards' explosiveness is a wild card, but Porter Jr.'s consistency is a safer bet.

Prediction

2024.05.14 06:57 Complex-Text-9105 Just sick and tired

I am 36 years old. I don't have any friends. I haven't been in a relationship in two years. I don't make as much money as I would like. I am have a really slow recovery from a tonsillectomy and I am just having a hard time getting myself motivated to do anything.
I had one pretty good friend, an ex, and we went on a platonic trip together in March. I had a really good time and generally enjoyed myself. Got to see Chichen Itza and get some fun in at the cenotes and beach. Since then we haven't hung out though. In her texts she said the guy she has been seeing is moving out of town in a few months so she is spending time with him. She has dated him off and on for 20+ years and this has never been an issue before so I do feel like some of this is also just fatigue of hanging out with me. We didn't get in any fights on the trip but it did show we have much different priorities/personalities. She brought her dogs, they go everywhere with her, and one is incontinent so it was dictating quite a bit of our schedule but I am pretty used to this so I felt like I handled it fairly well. I also do think some of this is her boyfriend not wanting us to hangout, which is understandable. I just said No worries and we haven't talked since. She didn't message me on my birthday, but I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't remember. We have been hanging out regularly for 2-3 years so it is a bit of a hit, but it was something that felt ultimately was going to happen so I am not mad, just a little sad. I haven't hung out with anyone other than my dad since the middle of March though.
Just hurts to not have anyone to hangout with at all. I have talked to two coworkers and one of them has bailed on me multiple times and the other just said he was too busy to make any plans in the first place. I have done meetups in the past but I always just feel so awkward not knowing anyone and I am awful at initiating contact with anyone, guys or girls. I also just don't really have that many interests, even though I tend to enjoy most things I do. I own a dirt bike but haven't gotten out to use it because it is really hard to load by myself and I am just not that confident with it. And if I am doing anything alone without somebody else keeping me accountable I tend to just blow it off. I have also tried Bumble BFF but honestly was so turned off by it. I kept on getting hit on, creepy af, and it just feels awkward.
I feel like I am bad at making friends because I am not very personable and also tend to overshare and say stupid things just because I haven't talked to anyone in so long it is just kind of like a dam bursts.
I would like to get back into judo or jujitsu, but with college and my mortgage I am barely squeaking by financially, and 200+ a month is a little too much for me. I even canceled my cable plan to save some money for bills despite loving basketball. I also don't really have enough energy for active hobbies due to my tonsillectomy right now.
I work full time and am taking college classes at the same time. I was never the best student, but I have finished 9 computer science courses and a statistics class over the last 2.5 years. I have 5 classes left for my bachelors and am on course to graduate Spring 2025. Straight A's and one B+ so far so I have been really happy with my grades, but the industry has completely fallen apart over the last year or two and I am worried that after investing all this time and money into going back to college I might not be able to get a job. The best student I know wasn't able to land a single internship this summer and that really shocked me. He is an amazing programmer, better than anyone I know.
Because I have a mortgage on a little duplex I cannot really afford to do an internship to try and help my job prospects, I am going to really have to rely on doing well in the interviews. I am also planning on trying to take advantage of the career fairs and other on-campus opportunities next fall but that is so not my comfort zone that I don't want to set my expectations really.
With how busy I am it has also been a great excuse for myself to not pursue more social outlets and the only thing I do for dating is online apps and while I can get the occasional date I don't think I have ever actually had a real connection through it. I am just bad at connecting with people on a personal level, be it friends or dates. I have been on so many first dates it is kind of depressing. The town I live in isn't small, like 150k, but I feel like I am running low on options after years of failures.
I had been suffering from chronic tonsillitis over the last year. I had 5 bouts in total, three of which were back to back episodes from January to March this year. I got a tonsillectomy on April 20 and am still having problems swallowing food. I am basically still on a puree diet.
Getting the tonsillectomy was a real eye opener for me because with my ex not being a contact anymore I didn't have anyone to rely on so I had to have my father fly out and spend a week with me. I didn't have any friends to rely on and it really just kind of hit me how depressing my life is. All of my old high school friends, who I don't keep up with, have families.
The one thing I had going for me is that I had a decent physique. Due to a lack of a social life I was pretty good at going to the gym and lifting regularly. I was 6'1 and 180-185 pounds, nothing impressive but I was happy with myself. I am down to 160 pounds now since my tonsillectomy though and I am just extremely low energy all the time. My summer class started today and I am having a lot of issues just focusing after an 8-hour work day, even though I only work remotely on a computer.
During COVID I really made leaps and bounds to improve myself. I quit cigarettes after 15 years, I started going back to class. Got my own place and gained 40 pounds (in a good way) but after losing half of that weight and generally being miserable from my tonsillectomy it is just so hard to motivate myself to even go to the gym anymore and for 3 years I never had a problem getting off my butt to go to the gym, even if it was just for a mediocre lifting session.
I used to love playing video games and watching tv shows/movies but now I just find myself mindlessly watching youtube or reading and don't even have the attention span or interest in booting up a video game anymore or trying to find a show or movie to watch.
I always wanted a family, but I have never really had a successful relationship in my life and now since my tonsillectomy I have become a lot less sexually motivated than before. I don't even have the urge to masturbate anymore, and sex was never a strong point of mine in the first place, leading me to believe it will be even worse moving forward. I also just have never connected with somebody on like a really deep level and feel like years of failures/insecurity just kind of burden me a this point. And I am getting to the age now where I feel like I am almost beyond the point where this is still possible. It is weird telling somebody I am 36 and my longest relationship was only 4 months long.
I feel like I am on the right track on paper with only one year left until I graduate and I kind of really want to move even though I love where I live just so I can get a fresh start, but at the same time I am terrified I will graduate and just be in the same situation I am currently in. I also could never afford to buy another place without a better salary. The only reason I was able to afford what I currently have is because I bought during the 2020 market and got a 2.34% APR. But even with that my mortgage is close to 40% of my take home right now and I have one of the cheapest places in town.
I don't really have anyone to vent to or destress to so I just wanted to post something from a throwaway account. My dad has been texting me daily because I think he realizes how unhappy I am and I really appreciate that.
I have been wanting to go see some Nuggets games at the bar, but I still cannot drink alcohol until I am eating food again so I have just been following highlights on youtube. I also have never been a fan of hanging out at bars. I enjoy shooting pool but I am not good at social settings like that.
I will leave it at this for now. A very long, poorly formatted ramble. But I have seen much worse. Thanks.

2024.05.13 21:45 Butterfans12 Isaiah Yocum - Career Review

Isaiah Yocum was destined to become great. A concensus #1 pick, Yocum had a unique prospect profile that had never been seen in the league before. He was drafted by a struggling Indiana Pacers team that had not made the playoffs in the previous 25 years. Isaiah had an immediate impact, winning ROY, leading the league in blocks, and leading the Pacers to the 7 seed, only to be eliminated in the first round by Marquise Andrews and the Miami Heat. Yocum followed up his rookie season with a statistically similar year and led the Pacers to the playoffs again, this time a second round exit. As his rookie contract was nearing an end, Yocum felt the pressue put on him by the media. He helped bring the Pacers all the way to the conference finals, only to lose again to Marquise Andrews and the eventual champion Miami Heat.
During this time, Andrews was a 3-time MVP (15 over his career) and was averaging an astounding 40 pts, 14 trb, 4 ast, 2 stl, and 2 blk over that 3 year strecth. Recognizing Andrews’ dominance, Yocum decided that he wanted to leave the Eastern Conference and joined the San Jose Venture Capatalists. San Jose was a new and highly successful expansion team, reaching the finals in just their 8th season. Recognizing the potential for success, San Jose made a few cap space moves and signed Yocum to a 5 year deal.
In Yocum’s first season in San Jose, he would average career highs in every statistical category and lead the Venture Capatilists to their first ever championship. He would then lead them to 3 more championships, becoming 1 of 6 teams to ever 4-peat. As the team got older, Yocum had to take a larger role. While his scoring averages would increase, San Jose would not win a ring for the following 4 seasons. Seeing that their aging star might leave soon, the Venture Capitalist overhauled their roster for Yocum’s 5th and final championship in 2056.
With Yocum entering his age 34 season and the Venture Capitalists missing the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, San Jose traded Yocum back to Indiana before the 2058 draft for a package of prospects and picks, including the #1 that year. Yocum led the Pacers to the #7 seed, their first playoff appearance in 10 seasons, before losing in the first round.
Entering his age 35 season, Yocum opted to enter free agency and signed with the Miami Heat, recently trying to figure things out following Marquise Andrews’ retirement in 2057. Isaiah Yocum would finish his career in Miami and retire in 2066.
He finished 5th in GOAT Lab rankings, 6th in scoring (35,286), 22nd in rebounding (12,479), 7th in steals (2,603), and 1st in blocks (3,473)

Oklahoma City Thunder VS Dallas Mavericks Prediction 2024-05-13 21:30:00-04:00

Thunder vs. Mavericks: A Clash of Titans or a One-Sided Showdown?

As the clock ticks down to the highly anticipated matchup between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Dallas Mavericks on May 13, 2024, the air is thick with anticipation, and the smell of freshly popped popcorn wafts through the arena. Fans are on the edge of their seats, not just because of the excitement of the game, but also because they can't wait to see which team's mascot will win the halftime dance-off. But let's not get distracted by furry creatures busting moves; we're here to dissect the impending basketball battle.

The Odds Are Speaking, But What Language Are They Speaking?

The bookmakers have spoken, and they're singing a tune that's music to the ears of Mavericks fans. DraftKings has the Dallas Mavericks at a price of 1.8, while FanDuel offers a slightly more generous 1.83. The Oklahoma City Thunder, on the other hand, are the underdogs with a price of 2.05 on DraftKings and 2.02 on FanDuel. But as any seasoned sports analyst or fortune cookie reader will tell you, the odds are just numbers—like the number of times you've regretted your team's draft picks.

The Tale of the Tape: Team Stats and Player Performances

The Mavericks, led by their star who's been breaking more ankles than a clumsy podiatrist, have been on a tear this season. Their offense is as smooth as a jazz solo, and their defense is tighter than the lid on a pickle jar. The Thunder, while not as flashy, have been grinding out wins with the tenacity of a toddler refusing to eat their vegetables.
Player performances are key, and the Mavericks have a roster that's been lighting up the stat sheets like a Christmas tree. The Thunder, while they may not have the same star power, have a group of young guns who've been hustling like they're trying to earn their allowance.

Historical Matchups and Current Season Trends

In their previous encounters, the Mavericks and Thunder have traded blows like two old friends arguing over the last slice of pizza. However, this season, the Mavericks have been the ones leaving with the cheesy prize more often than not. They've been riding a wave of momentum that's been as unstoppable as a toddler on a sugar rush.
The Thunder, while they've had their moments, have been as inconsistent as Wi-Fi on a budget airline. They've shown flashes of brilliance, but they've also had moments where they've looked more lost than a tourist without a map.

Weather Conditions: Because Why Not?

Now, you might be thinking, "What do weather conditions have to do with an indoor basketball game?" And to that, I say, "Have you ever tried to play basketball in a thunderstorm?" But in all seriousness, the only storms we'll be seeing are the ones the Thunder hope to bring to the Mavericks' parade.

The Prediction: Who Will Reign Supreme?

After careful analysis, and considering the odds, team statistics, player performances, historical matchups, and current season trends (and ignoring the weather because, well, it's indoors), the prediction is in. Drumroll, please...
The Dallas Mavericks will emerge victorious in this clash of titans. They've got the stats, the swagger, and the odds in their favor. The Thunder may put up a fight, but in the end, they'll be like a paper airplane in a hurricane—valiant effort, but ultimately futile.
So there you have it, folks. The Mavericks are set to lasso the Thunder and ride off into the sunset. But remember, in the world of sports, anything can happen. The ball is round, the hoops are high, and the mascots are still practicing their dance moves.
And as for the halftime show, my money's on the Mavericks' mascot. After all, who can resist a horse doing the moonwalk?

Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers: An NBA Showdown of Epic Proportions

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, basketball enthusiasts of all ages, buckle up for a rollercoaster ride of hoops hysteria as we dive into the much-anticipated clash between the mighty Boston Celtics and the underdog Cleveland Cavaliers. The stage is set for May 13, 2024, and the air is thick with anticipation, popcorn, and the faint musk of mascot costumes.

The Tale of the Tape

Let's cut to the chase. The odds are in, and they're singing a tune sweeter than the Boston Pops Orchestra for Celtics fans. DraftKings and FanDuel, the oracles of the betting world, have spoken, and they're not whispering. With odds of 1.27 and 1.28 respectively, the Celtics are the Vegas sweethearts, while the Cavaliers, with odds of 3.95 and 3.9, are the long shots hoping for a Hollywood ending (DraftKings, 2024; FanDuel, 2024).

The Green Machine: Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics, a team with more banners than a medieval jousting tournament, are no strangers to the limelight. Their roster, a veritable who's who of basketball royalty, has been slicing through the competition like a hot knife through chowder. With a defense tighter than a Bostonian's grip on their Dunkin' Donuts coffee, they've been stifling opponents and leaving them as bewildered as tourists on the Freedom Trail.

The Cavalier Attitude: Cleveland Cavaliers

On the other side of the court, we have the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs, with a chip on their shoulder bigger than the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, are the scrappy underdogs that everyone can't help but root for. They've been grinding out games with the tenacity of a Cleveland winter, and while they may not have the glitz and glamour of their Beantown rivals, they've got heart – and sometimes, that's enough to make the magic happen.

The Numbers Game

Now, let's talk turkey – or should I say, let's talk stats. The Celtics have been putting up numbers that would make a mathematician blush, with offensive efficiency that's as smooth as a Harvard grad's pickup lines. Their shooting percentages have been hotter than a Fourth of July barbecue in the North End.
The Cavaliers, while they may not have the same statistical swagger, have been the David to many a Goliath this season. They've been rebounding with the ferocity of a Lake Erie storm and have shown that they can hang with the big boys when the pressure's on.

The Weather Factor

Ah, the weather. As unpredictable as a game of Plinko on "The Price is Right," but let's not forget that this game is played indoors. So, unless the roof decides to take a day off, the only storms brewing will be the ones on the court.

The Prediction

Drumroll, please. It's time for the moment you've all been waiting for – the prediction. Taking into account the odds, the stats, and the sheer firepower of the Celtics, it's hard to bet against them. They're like Paul Revere on his midnight ride – except they're warning everyone that a basketball beatdown is coming, not the British.
The Cavaliers, bless their hearts, will put up a fight that'll be talked about in Cleveland sports bars for years to come. But when the final buzzer sounds, it's the Celtics who will be raising their arms in victory, much to the delight of the leprechauns and Larry Bird impersonators across New England.
So there you have it, folks. The Boston Celtics will emerge victorious in this epic showdown. And remember, in the wise words of the great philosopher Shaquille O'Neal, "The only difference between a good shot and a bad shot is if it goes in or not."
May the hoops be ever in your favor, and may the best team win. But really, it's going to be the Celtics.

2024.05.13 18:19 RusevReigns How I know deep in my heart the woke have ruined the internet

Hi, I’m that guy that keeps making threads in that forum.
I want to give a longer explanation and life story that makes me so certain I’m right that the woke are messing things up. I grew up having social troubles since I had emotionally unavailable/narcissistic parents and I never really learned to connect with people. So around 12 (1990 born) I got into social media in a big way, particularly message boards. I originally posted on much music board in Canada (no longer exists) and there was a basketball board I still post on, but probably the most meaningful one was a movie forum I discovered in 2005, I feel like it helped raised me. People competed with each other to make best box office predictions in addition to overall film discussion, and then sections like the casual conversation area were once on fire. By 2018 I became co owner and mostly the one keeping it afloat. At this point the posts are down to maybe 10 per day or something, it was around 25=30 when I took over 6 years ago. I was looking at the average statistics and the lifetime numbers are still over 300 posts and 11 threads, so at its peak it was idk… probably 800 posts and 30 threads or something?
What was it like back in the day? It was like a party, as opposed to now when the internet is more of a school board meeting. It seems like everyone had an identity and unique way they talked, energy, enthusiasm. They had chemistry with each other, became online friends or enemies. That’s how you end up with such a wildly active off topic type of section. The floodgates were completely open in terms of personal interactions.
Now, this is just one forum, and a detractor could say "That's just your personal forum becoming less popular", well I visit other forums and they lost character too, so someone could say "Well forums overall have become less popular and now just have bored middle aged people instead of Gen Z-ers". But I don't see the old internet energy around anywhere else either. All these interactions are now filtered through what group you're an activist for, what you're allowed to say, and expectations of how you're supposed to act or think. It feels repressed, walking on eggshells, etc. I believe if you filled a reddit or twitter community full of modern leftists and the energy in the online room is going to be full of so much of this pressure on them about what they're supposed to be. It's a repressive environment. Most people are either true woke believers at which point they're acting cultish and not really with us psychologically anymore, or they're people who've interacted with woke people enough that they've adjusted to trying not to offend people or just are left struggling with how they're not connected with the woke person anymore, or they're feeling the woke person put pressure on them at all times and then cracking. And no, the return for this isn't a less offensive internet, minorities probably have to face more racism and trans people more anti-trans posts now because of how the woke has emboldened people to piss them off for the sake of it.
Again, if you want to, you can claim my experience is not the truth. But having seen the internet 15 years ago and having seen it now, I just know it's true. It's not just about logic to me, it's about feeling as much as anything else. I practically want to dedicate my life to smashing woke because I want to free human beings from this repressive emotional cage that's been put upon them. I want them to be able to connect and have chemistry with others, I want socializing on the internet to be a fun experience for them instead of stressful, because god knows a lot of us have other struggles in our lives and need the escape.

2024.05.13 17:49 MaHcIn Can't get my SwiftUI view to update

Hi,
I have a SwiftUI view like this:
ScrollViewReader { proxy in ScrollView { VStack(spacing: 0) { ForEach(viewModel.timelineRows) { timelineRow in switch (timelineRow) { case .Data(let calculation): let contentView = ContentView( // This is the view that won't update type: type, calculations: calculation, showBalanceForToday: viewModel.showBalanceOnToday, responseBalanceType: viewModel.responseBalanceType ) let timelineRowView = TimelineRowView( date: calculation.date!, contentView: contentView, showRightArrow: viewModel.canNavigateToHistory ) .id(timelineRow.isToday ? "today" : timelineRow.id) if viewModel.canNavigateToHistory { NavigationLink { HistoryViewController.SwiftUI(date: calculation.date!) } label: { timelineRowView } } else { timelineRowView } case .Separator(let date): TimelineMonthSeparatorView(text: date.formattedText(format: "MMM. yyyy")) } } } } .onAppear { proxy.scrollTo("today", anchor: .center) TimelinesHostingViewController.ViewMediator.shared.onTodayButtonPressed = { withAnimation { proxy.scrollTo("today", anchor: .center) } } } }
The `ContentView` is quite simple, it just has some logic that decides which struct to return depending on the parameters:
struct ContentView: View { var type: TimelineType var calculations: UserCalculations.DailyCalculation var showBalanceForToday: Bool var responseBalanceType: SystemSettings.ResponseBalanceType var body: some View { ZStack { let isCalculationTodayOrEarlier = calculations.date?.isBeforeDate(DateInRegion(region: .current) + 1.days, granularity: .day) == true if type == .Balances && isCalculationTodayOrEarlier { let shouldShowBalance = == false showBalanceForToday BalanceView(showBalances: shouldShowBalance, responseBalanceType: responseBalanceType, runningValue: Double(calculations.calculationResultSummary!.runningBalanceValue!), dailyValue: Double(calculations.calculationResultSummary!.dailyBalanceValue!)) } else if type == .Schedule { ScheduleView(timePolicy: calculations.timePolicy, absence: calculations.absences?.first) } EmptyView() } } }calculations.date?.isToday
The field that's changing at runtime is `showBalanceForToday` and it resides in `ViewModel` like this:
u/Published var showBalanceOnToday = false init() { ClockStatusManager.shared.$clockStatus.map { status in status?.status?.isClockedIn == true } .assign(to: \.showBalanceOnToday, on: self) .store(in: &cancelBag) }
I double checked that the ClockStatus value gets propagated to the `showBalanceOnToday`, however, the SwiftUI view who utilises this Published variable still doesn't get updated.
What could be the issue here? My only suspicion is that the Views inside `ForEach` loop won't get updated unless the ForEach parameter itself gets modified, but that wouldn't make any sense from coding perspective since other independent state variables could make their way into the ForEach block.
Edit: Per request, adding the TimelineRowView code:
struct TimelineRowView: View { var date: DateInRegion var contentView: Content var showRightArrow: Bool var body: some View { ZStack { // Background date.isToday ? Color("TimelineRowHighlight") : Color("List") // Content HStack { // Day VStack { Group { Text(String(date.day)) .font(Font.system(size: 24)) Text(date.date.formattedText(format: "EEEE")) .font(Font.system(size: 9)) } .foregroundColor(date.weekday == 1 ? Color("Red") : Color("TextBlack")) }.frame(width: 64) // Content View Spacer() contentView Spacer() // Arrow if showRightArrow { Image("arrow_right") .renderingMode(.template) .foregroundColor(Color("TextLight")) .padding(.horizontal, 16) } } // Divider VStack { Spacer() Divider() } } .frame(height: 56) } }
Edit 2: Adding ViewModel
class TimelineViewModel: ObservableObject { @Published var timelineRows: [TimelineRow] = [] @Published var error: NetworkError? @Published var showBalanceOnToday = false private let user = LoginManager.shared.user private let client = StatisticsClient() private let systemSettings = SystemSettingsRepository.shared.systemSettings private var disposeBag = DisposeBag() private var cancelBag = Set() var responseBalanceType: SystemSettings.ResponseBalanceType { return systemSettings.responseBalanceType } var canNavigateToHistory: Bool { return user?.canViewHistory == true } var isUserClockedIn: Bool { return ClockStatusManager().clockStatus?.status?.isClockedIn == true } init() { ClockStatusManager.shared.$clockStatus.map { status in status?.status?.isClockedIn == true } .assign(to: \.showBalanceOnToday, on: self) .store(in: &cancelBag) } func loadTimeline() { error = nil let from = (Date() - 1.months).dateAtStartOf(.month) let to = (Date() + 1.months).dateAtEndOf(.month) client.getLatestUserCalculations(fromDate: from, toDate: to)? .subscribe(on: SerialDispatchQueueScheduler(qos: .background)) .observe(on: MainScheduler.instance) .subscribe { (response: ApiResponse) in if let error = response.error { self.error = error } else if let calculations = response.responseObject { self.timelineRows = self.calculateTimelineRows(calculations: calculations.dailyCalculations) } }.disposed(by: disposeBag) } private func calculateTimelineRows(calculations: [UserCalculations.DailyCalculation]?) -> [TimelineRow] { let sorted = calculations?.sorted(by: { $0.date!.isBeforeDate($1.date!, granularity: .minute) }) var rows: [TimelineRow] = [] for calculation in sorted ?? [] { if calculation.date?.day == 1 { rows.append(TimelineRow.Separator(date: calculation.date!.date)) } rows.append(TimelineRow.Data(dailyCalculation: calculation)) } return rows } }

2024.05.13 14:05 Karstaagly r/nba Playoff MVPs: 2016

Throughout most of its history, the NBA has annually granted Most Valuable Player Awards to recognize its best competitors in the regular season and in the NBA Finals. These are the most substantial honors that an NBA player can receive. And since 2022, two Conference Finals MVPs have also been awarded each year to further celebrate achievement in the postseason.
Unfortunately, though, there has never been an award for the most valuable player in the entirety of the playoffs. For the vast majority of the league’s history, the only individual postseason award was entirely based on one series and only available to one team. As a consequence, some of the most incredible performances in the history of the sport have gone without any official recognition. So this project intends to retroactively celebrate some of those performances by asking this subreddit to award Playoff MVPs for every playoff tournament from 1980 to the present.

Previous Winners

1980: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 1981: Larry Bird 1982: Magic Johnson 1983: Moses Malone 1984: Larry Bird 1985: Larry Bird 1986: Larry Bird 1987: Larry Bird 1988: Magic Johnson 1989: Michael Jordan 1990: Michael Jordan 1991: Michael Jordan 1992: Michael Jordan 1993: Michael Jordan 1994: Hakeem Olajuwon 1995: Hakeem Olajuwon 1996: Michael Jordan 1997: Michael Jordan 1998: Michael Jordan 1999: Tim Duncan 2000: Shaquille O’Neal 2001: Shaquille O’Neal 2002: Shaquille O’Neal 2003: Tim Duncan 2004: Kevin Garnett 2005: Tim Duncan 2006: Dwyane Wade 2007: Tim Duncan 2008: Kevin Garnett 2009: LeBron James 2010: Kobe Bryant 2011: Dirk Nowitzki 2012: LeBron James 2013: LeBron James 2014: LeBron James 2015: LeBron James

How to Vote

I will provide three different comments beneath each post representing three Playoff MVP candidates for the season being discussed. Additionally, if anybody feels that another player is deserving of candidacy, they can add a comment for that player to nominate them for the award using the process described in the following section. You can reply to these comments with arguments for or against any of the players to convince other voters of your position. Whichever player has the most upvotes after five days will be declared the Playoff MVP of that year, which will be announced the following week.

Nominating Players

If you would like to nominate a player, simply post a comment for that athlete using the same format as the comments for the other candidates. This should include the player’s name and a link to the Basketball Reference page of the team that they played for that season. Here is an example that you can copy:
PMVP Candidate: J.R. Smith - Stats and Record

Voting Criteria

Since the NBA doesn’t have any official criteria for how the MVP is decided, I’m not going to provide any specific criteria for this award either. However, I will suggest that voters judge the playoff MVP by the same standards that they use to judge the regular season MVP, such as individual statistics, team success, and overall impact on the game.

2024.05.13 10:35 rationalinquiry Have a fight, see who wins! - a free tool for analysing win rates

I love this community and our hobby!
That said, the lack of good, statistical analysis of team win rates for metawatch is frustating. GW and other analysts seem to never actually take into account the (often substantial) uncertainty present in these numbers, usually presenting them as fixed point estimates. With that in mind - and because I'm a massive nerd - I made a little web app, called "Have a fight, see who wins!", that uses a Bayesian statistical model to analyse win rates.
All you need is a spreadsheet (.csv/.xls/.xlsx) of data containing the faction names, total number of games played, and number of wins, and the app will calculate the win rate and its associated uncertainty (based on what win rates we'd reasonably expect to see prior to seeing the data, and the data itself). You can then play around with the interactive plot and tabulated results 'til your heart's content.
All the code is open-source and freely-available on GitHub.

2024.05.13 09:12 taggerungDC So I asked AI to figure what was wrong with NBA2K and come up with some solutions. This is what it came up with

As the title says, I asked Windows Copilot to find the key problems with NBA2K and come up with a few solutions. This is what it said was the game's key issues

Key Problems

According to the data it used (consisting of player feedback and reviews)
  1. Microtransactions: The game has been criticized for its heavy reliance on microtransactions, which are seen as essential to compete online1.
  2. MyCareer Mode: While it has potential, the mode could better reward skill and effort rather than "open-wallet shortcuts".
  3. Fast-Break Gameplay: This aspect of the game has been lacking for over a decade and still needs improvement.
  4. Newcomer Experience: The game is not very welcoming to newcomers, which could be improved for broader appeal.
  5. Online Tournaments: There is a lack of online tournaments with playoff brackets or seasons to use squads.
And these are the solutions that Copilot came up with:
  1. Reduce Microtransactions: Make the game less dependent on in-game purchases. Provide more ways to earn competitive items through gameplay.
  2. Enhance MyCareer Mode: Implement a system that rewards players based on their in-game performance and progression, not their spending.
  3. Improve Fast-Break Dynamics: Work on the AI and mechanics to make fast-breaks more fluid and realistic.
  4. New Player Onboarding: Create tutorials and beginner-friendly modes to help new players get accustomed to the game.
  5. Introduce Online Leagues: Add structured online leagues with tournaments and seasons to enhance the competitive experience.

Let's break these down, shall we?

Reducing Microtransations

While we all know Take-Two ain't doing this under any circumstances (blame the whales just as much as you would blame Take-Two), here's what Copilot and I came up with to reduce microtransaction reliance
  1. Balanced In-Game Economy:
    • Adjust Pricing: Reevaluate the cost of virtual currency (VC) and items. Make sure that the prices are reasonable and not excessively high.
    • Earning VC: Increase the ways players can earn VC through gameplay. Reward skill, performance, and achievements rather than just relying on purchases.
    • Daily Rewards: Implement daily login bonuses or challenges that grant VC. This encourages consistent play without pushing players toward microtransactions.
  2. Transparency and Fairness:
    • Clear Information: Provide transparent information about what items can be obtained through gameplay versus microtransactions. Players should know what they can achieve without spending real money.
    • No Pay-to-Win: Avoid making microtransaction-exclusive items significantly better than what can be earned through regular play. Cosmetic items are fine, but gameplay advantages should not be locked behind paywalls.
  3. Cosmetic Customization:
    • Expand Customization Options: Offer a wide range of cosmetic items (skins, hairstyles, tattoos, etc.) that players can purchase with VC. This allows personalization without affecting gameplay balance.
    • Unlockable Customization: Include unlockable customization options through achievements, challenges, or leveling up. This gives players goals to work toward.
  4. Alternative Progression Paths:
    • Skill-Based Progression: Introduce skill-based progression systems. For example, players could earn attribute points based on their performance in games, which can be used to improve their player’s abilities.
    • Career Achievements: Tie microtransactions to optional shortcuts rather than necessities. For instance, players can choose to buy a skill boost or earn it through in-game achievements.
  5. Community Feedback and Testing:
    • Engage with Players: Listen to community feedback regarding microtransactions. Regularly communicate with players through forums, social media, and surveys.
    • Beta Testing: Involve players in beta testing to identify any issues related to microtransactions early on. This helps ensure a fair and balanced system.

MyCareer Improvements

Again, while Take-Two won't likely implement these, here's what Copilot and I came up with:
  1. Player Progression and Development:
    1. Attribute Upgrades: Streamline the process of upgrading player attributes by making it more intuitive and rewarding. Players should feel a sense of accomplishment as they improve their skills.
    2. Performance-Based Rewards: Tie attribute improvements directly to in-game performance. For example, hitting a series of three-pointers could lead to an increase in the three-point attribute.
    3. Diverse Challenges: Introduce a variety of challenges that cater to different playstyles and reward players with attribute points upon completion.
  2. Narrative and Immersion:
    1. Dynamic Storylines: Create a more dynamic and responsive storyline that reacts to the player’s actions and decisions, providing a unique experience for each playthrough.
    2. Off-Court Activities: Expand off-court activities that impact player development and career trajectory. This could include training, endorsements, and personal life decisions.
  3. Customization and Builds:
    1. Deeper Customization: Allow for deeper customization of player builds, including more options for physical attributes, skills, and playstyles.
    2. Template Builds: Offer a variety of template builds that players can choose from or modify, reflecting the styles of current NBA stars and legends.
  4. Economic System:
    1. Balanced VC Earning: Adjust the virtual currency (VC) earning rates to ensure players can progress at a reasonable pace without feeling forced into microtransactions.
    2. Incentivize Skill: Reward players with VC for skillful play and reaching milestones, rather than just time spent in the game.
  5. Accessibility and Difficulty:
    1. Newcomer Friendly: Offer tutorials and guidance for newcomers to help them understand the mechanics and strategies of basketball within MyCareer instead of just in the 2KU section.

Team Play Mode: An Upgraded Pro-Am mode.

This one was an idea I had in my head honestly, I'm glad Copilot also shared the same thoughts. It would work the same as Pro-Am, but with the following changes:
  1. Player Classes and Customization:
    1. Specialized Player Classes: Introduce various player classes that cater to different playstyles, such as Sharpshooter, Playmaker, Defender, etc. Players will be able to pick from these and form a team with one player per class (to avoid a whole team of Sharpshooters. Copilot and I learned from Overwatch's whole Bridgitte situation). This would be independent from your MyPlayer build, so you can't bring your current build in the mode.
    2. Customizable Attributes: Allow players to customize their virtual athlete’s attributes and skills to fit their preferred role on the team. Your Pro-Am League build will be different from your MyCareer build, it will grow and get better as you play this mode.
  2. Progression and Rewards:
    1. Skill Points and PlayStyles: Earn skill points through gameplay, which can be used to unlock new mode-specific PlayStyles, enhancing your character’s abilities. Once you max out a PlayStyle in Pro-Am League to 99 OVR, you'll unlock it for future MyPlayer Builds.
    2. Team Progression: As the team wins matches and climbs the ranks, unlock new customization options and rewards. These can range from Shoes in your teams colors, your team's jersey to wear outside the mode, etc.
  3. Community and Social Features:
    1. Social Play: Encourage social play by allowing teams to set up friendly matches, tournaments, and special events. Start up rivalries with other teams or even try to recreate Kuroko no Basket if you wanna.
  4. League System:
    1. Divisional Play: Similar to real-life conferences, teams can play within their divisions and qualify for playoffs and championships. Teams are sorted into "divisions" and play in inter-divisional tournaments, the team with the most points getting to play in the Season Championship game for various prizes (all cosmetic, but still pretty cool).
    2. Dynamic Leaderboards: Maintain dynamic leaderboards that display team rankings, player stats, and other achievements.
  5. Events and Tournaments:
    1. In-Game Events: Host regular in-game events with unique themes and challenges that offer exclusive rewards.
    2. Official Tournaments: Partner with esports organizations to hold official NBA2K tournaments with significant prizes. They could even integrate it into the NBA2K League if they wanted to.

Miscellaneous Improvements:

  1. Spectator Mode: Allow players to watch live Pro-Am Rec, Theater, or Park games as spectators. This promotes community engagement and provides entertainment. You can even put VC on it.
  2. Fair Play Enforcement: Implement strict anti-cheating measures to maintain a level playing field. Detect and penalize cheaters.
  3. Improved Anti-Cheat: This one is a no-brainer to stop the Zen and Titan users.
  4. Stop porting to PC if you don't plan it to match the Next-Gen version: Self-explanatory. You have no excuse to match PC to Next-Gen.
  5. In-Game Reporting: Again, self-explanatory
This is quite a lot I know. And just for transparency, these are nothing more than a list of things and AI came up with to improve this game of ours. If any of this stuff gets implemented, the River Styx will be a hockey arena for the Arizona Coyotes. Also, I'm putting this in a google doc and a word doc in case this gets deleted

2024.05.12 17:19 ffinstructor What’s the point of the L2M report?

The NBA needs to make some changes to the L2M report and what it actually means. As in, if a close game is littered with incorrect calls in the final two minutes, the NBA needs to do something about it. What’s the point of just acknowledging it, if no one is held accountable?
I don’t really understand, why players and coaches get fined for complaining about poor refereeing when the NBA is acknowledging incorrect call after incorrect call (and that’s only in the final 2 minutes!). Why not start fining refs, or docking them from getting the chance for big games if they are constantly messing up? It doesn’t really make sense to me, the refs Union is too strong at this point. And the NBA acts as if they can do no wrong. With two (about to be three playoff games) decided on incorrect calls the NBA clearly has to step in and do something. Now I don’t think the final two minutes should be replayed or anything like that, but their needs to be a change. I’m thinking a larger input from outside ref crews (ie more calls to new york), fining refs for game changing incorrect calls, and also maintaining statistics on each individual ref in the last two minutes to decide who gets the big games.
Here are the three games in question:
  1. Maxey in bound foul
  2. Maxey travel game
  3. Luka jump ball (nearly 100% sure this will be ruled incorrect)
And there are arguably even more game changing calls, but these prob had the largest impact.
On a side note, the NBA needs to also do something about ref consistency on a game to game basis, but also on a throughout the game basis. Consistency is nearly as important as accuracy in reffing in regards to eliminating biases to one team. In baseball, this is a critical component to tracking ump performance. Now it doesn’t translate as easy to basketball, but the NBA needs to figure out how to create a consistency score for refs and track it.

Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers: An NBA Showdown of Epic Proportions

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and basketball enthusiasts of all ages, gather around as we delve into the crystal ball of sports analytics to predict the outcome of the much-anticipated clash between the Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Set your calendars and alarms for May 13, 2024, because this is not just a game; it's a prophecy waiting to unfold.

The Tale of the Tape

Before we jump into the nitty-gritty, let's set the stage with some cold, hard facts. The Boston Celtics, with their illustrious history and a trophy cabinet that would make Fort Knox blush, are set to take on the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team that knows a thing or two about overcoming odds (remember 2016, anyone?).
According to the latest dispatches from the bookmaking wizards at DraftKings and FanDuel, the Celtics are the clear favorites with odds of 1.29 and 1.31, respectively. The Cavaliers, on the other hand, are the underdogs with odds of 3.75 and 3.6. But as any seasoned sports soothsayer will tell you, the game isn't played on paper or decided by odds alone.

The Celtics' Conundrum: A Juggernaut or a Gilded Lily?

The Boston Celtics come into this game with the swagger of a team that's been there, done that, and got the championship rings to prove it. But let's not forget that pride comes before the fall, and even Goliath can stumble when faced with a well-aimed stone.
The Celtics' roster reads like a who's who of basketball royalty, with players who can shoot the three, drive the lane, and play defense like their lives depend on it. But will their bench depth be enough to withstand the Cavaliers' onslaught? Will they be able to maintain their composure when the going gets tough, or will they crumble like a cookie in the hands of a toddler?

The Cavaliers' Quest: David's Slingshot or a Quixotic Adventure?

The Cleveland Cavaliers, bless their hearts, are the quintessential underdogs. They've got grit, they've got heart, and they've got a fan base that would follow them into the fires of Mount Doom if need be. But will that be enough to topple the Celtics' empire?
The Cavaliers' key to victory lies in their ability to play as a cohesive unit, to hit their shots with the precision of a Swiss watch, and to defend like their lives (and contracts) depend on it. They'll need to channel the spirit of their 2016 championship run and hope that the basketball gods are feeling particularly generous.

The Prediction: A Battle of Wits, Will, and Weather

Now, let's talk turkey. The game is set to take place at the Celtics' home court, where the ghosts of legends past will be cheering from the rafters. The weather, while typically a non-factor in the climate-controlled utopia of an NBA arena, could play a role in the players' journey to the stadium. A sunny day could see the Cavaliers basking in the warmth of optimism, while a stormy forecast might mirror the Celtics' thunderous approach to the game.
Taking all of this into account, along with the odds, the team stats, and the phases of the moon (just for good measure), the prediction is in. Drumroll, please...
The Boston Celtics will emerge victorious in this epic showdown. Why, you ask? Because the odds are more than just numbers; they're the distilled wisdom of countless sports oracles. The Celtics have the home-court advantage, the historical pedigree, and a roster that can turn the heat up faster than a microwave on the popcorn setting.
But fear not, Cavaliers fans, for in the grand tapestry of the NBA, every thread has its place, and your beloved team will fight with the valor of a thousand knights. They may not claim the victory this time, but they'll leave it all on the court, and that's a win in itself.
So there you have it, folks. The Celtics will reign supreme, not by the grace of the gods, but by the sweat of their brows and the strength of their skills. Mark my words, come May 13, the basketball world will bear witness to a spectacle that will be talked about for ages—or at least until the next game.
And remember, in the grand scheme of things, it's just a game—albeit one that ignites passions, fuels rivalries, and gives us an excuse to eat nachos on a weekday. Enjoy the game, and may the best team win (which, according to my infallible analysis, is the Celtics).
