Dylan Thomas is both a VERY specific reference ... but also a bit of an English 101 reference, yet St. Vincent has a stronger connection to Dylan Thomas than, say ... Healy appears to (at least on the surface.)
And Annie strikes me as very much "Patti Smith," even if she's not, in fact, Dylan Thomas.
Only part that doesn't fit is that St Vincent has very publicly said "nope never not me" to tattoos.
At minimum, I wonder if this is a "new romantics" thing, or if they all just worship at the same artist alter, if it really is that easy to "make connections" if we want to, or ... if there is something to it.
At maximum, this is my new headcannon that erases Healy from the narrative.

Readers who are familiar with the history of The Hobbit may know that for a long time, the name “Gandalf” belonged to the chief dwarf, who became Thorin Oakenshield; while the wizard was originally called “Bladorthin.” Tolkien recycled the latter name in the description of Smaug's hoard.
Here are some similar displacements of names that took place during the writing of LotR. Probably the most surprising is that “Aragorn” first appears in the manuscripts as a possible name for – Shadowfax!

Narothal (“Firefoot”), the first name given to Gandalf's white horse, was replaced later in pencil by the suggestions: “Fairfax, Snowfax,” and penciled in the margin is “Firefoot Arod? Aragorn,” but these names were struck out.

HoME VI p. 351. Note that “Firefoot” and “Arod” were also reused, but for horses not Númenóreans. Aragorn did not receive that name, while simultaneously changing from a hobbit with wooden shoes to a Man, until the beginning of HoME VII (pp. 6-7). (But see below.)
Frodo: Some people will know that for a long time, Frodo Took – along with his brother Odo and Merry Brandybuck -- was one of the three companions of the Ringbearer, who was originally named “Bingo-Bolger-Baggins.” Frodo Took dropped out when Sam Gamgee appeared (HoME VI p. 221; Odo turned into Pippin. (This is a simplification of a complicated history involving many shifts and permutations.)
But that was the second Frodo Took. The first Frodo Took belonged to an older generation; he was none other than the Old Took, identified by Christopher Tolkien in the Index as “Frodo I.”. The name never appeared in the narrative, only in a scrap of family tree reproduced at HoME VI p. 267. The Old Took first became Gerontius in the updated version published at p. 317. The name, which appears in the text only once, in “Treebeard,” is a joke. “Gerontius” is a Latinized form of a Greek word meaning “old man.”
Ingold: In RotK, Ingold is the Gondorian soldier in charge of a work detail repairing the Rammas Echor. But for a considerable stretch of Book II, the name belonged to Aragorn. When Celeborn greeted the Fellowship in Caras Galadhon he said “Welcome Ingold son of Ingrim!” (HoME VII p. 246); according to Christopher Tolkien, the erased name “Elfstone” can be made out underlying “Ingold.” The reason for these changes is found in a pair of notes dated to this stage of the writing; the first reads:

NB. Since Aragorn is a man and the common speech (especially of mortals) is represented by English then he must not have an Elvish name. Change to Elfstone son of Elfhelm.

HoME VII p. 277. Another note reproduced in the same place says:

Instead of Aragorn son of Kelegorn and instead of the later version Elfstone son of Elfhelm use Ingold son of Ingrim; since Trotter is a man he should not have a Gnome-elvish [Sindarin] name like Aragorn. The Ing- element here can represent the “West.”

Ibid. Ingeld, so spelled, appears in both Norse and Old English legends. In Beowulf, he is the son of the king of the Heathobards, with whom the Danes were at feud – a feud which led to the destruction of Heorot, despite Hrothgar's giving his daughter to Ingeld in marriage.
As the quoted passages indicate, Aragorn was “Elfstone” before he was “Ingold.” and afterwards as well.“Elfstone” is a modernization of *Ælfstan,* a fairly common Old English proper name; Onomasticum Anglo-Saxonum, an 1897 catalogue of all personal names found in documents from the period, lists 68 people called Ælfstan, and 20 named Ælfhelm. Each time Tolkien changed his mind, he changed the name in some earlier passages; see, e.g. HoME VII p. 146, which says that “Elfstone” was penciled in for “Aragorn” wherever it appeared in the manuscript of “The Council of Elrond.” But each time, he missed some. Christopher Tolkien worked through the resulting confusion and concluded that the sequence was Aragorn > Elfstone > Ingold > Elfstone > Aragorn (HoME VII p. 278). “Aragorn” reappeared for good in the draft of “The Departure of Boromir” (HoME VII p. 381).
Note that “Elfhelm” is another name that was reused, for a marshal of Rohan.
Morthond: In RotK, the River Morthond or Blackroot arises from the southern entrance to the Paths of the Dead. It is first mentioned in the “Minas Tirith,” when Pippin and Beregond watch the arrival of the contingents of the Outlands; the bowmen of Morthond Vale are led by “tall Duinhir with his sons, Duilin and Derufin,” (In the book, Aragorn's journey through Morthond Vale is told in direct narrative in “The Passing of the Grey Company”; in the manuscript, it was described retrospectively by Legolas and Gimli in “The Last Debate.”)
But the name “Morthond/Blackroot” had originally been attached to another river – the Celebrant/Silverlode:

“It is for Dimrill-dale that we are making,” said Gandalf. “If we climb the pass that is called the Dimrill Stair under the red side of Caradhras, we shall come down into the deep dale of the Dwarves. There the River [Redway rises in the black wat(er) Morthond Blackroot > ] Morthond the Cold rises in the Mirrormere.”

• I read this quite blindly due to a friend's recommendation and enjoyed it more than I expected. The concept itself - Cara being such a valuable world-traveller due to how unlikely it is for her to survive to adulthood - is a great selling point by itself, but the book doesn't only deliver on the execution of that concept, but also captured me quite well with regards to Cara's complicated relationship to her abusive ex lover Nic as well as to her coworker Dell.
• I listened to the audiobook narrated by Nicole Lewis and found it a very good rendition, I can recommend the format. If I misspell things, this is why.
• Cara comes from a poor background and has gone through numerous traumatic events from a young age - it's what makes her suited for her job. I liked that her trauma obviously informed her character and choices and felt weighty and real, but that the book never lingers on it to the point of feeling edgy.
• The story has a certain beautiful, visceral feel to it. All in all I wouldn't exactly call it literary, but... I'm not sure how to describe it, it's just really well crafted imo.
• The main thing that this book does really well imo is exploring how different people's lives turn out based on a few key choices or events, and I really liked how it explored those
• The worldbuilding (on Earth 0) is kind of basic, you have the rich, clean, safe, modern Wiley City and the dangerous, poor, polluted Ashtown, with little mention of any territory outside of the two territories. Ashtown being ruled by a violent Emperor gives it a more post-apocalyptic fantasy feel, while Wiley feels like a different world entirely. It's basic, but imo it worked perfectly fine for the story.
• Honestly there's not that much I even want to talk about in the spoiler-free section because there's so many neat little twists and reveals that shape the story as it progresses. I really just thought this book did that all really well.

Discussion

• There's a handful of minor twists and revelations that I found well constructed and that were (for me) just foreshadowed enough that I guessed some of them but didn't find them too obvious. For example, that the main Cara is not actually from Earth 0 originally, or that the reason Dell is so cold with her is due to her kissing Caramenta right after meeting her and getting shot down hard. It's not super duper special but it just worked well and was satisfying to read imo.
• I loved the complicated feelings this book gave me about Nic: Obviously, the Nic from Caralee's past is horrible with few redeeming qualities, but then we see an Earth 175 Nic who's turned out so completely different that they end up as something like friends. That in turn then made me find Earth 0 Nic somewhat sympathetic, as he and Cara become allies, even though he too takes the first opportunity he has to get violent with her. I really liked that these different versions felt plausible, for the most part.
• That being said, idk if I buy Caramenta being such a complete asshole to Dell after living such a sheltered life. That could have perhaps used a bit more exploration, idk.
• I really liked the scene where Cara goes to the House after Jeane's death and just cries in Exlee's (idk how to spell it sorry) room. That acknowledgement that she just needs someone to go "what do you need, child" and hold her felt very visceral and lovely to me.

Conclusion This book was cool and I liked it. No hot takes from me today, so this might not be my most interesting review, but I wanted to write it anyway because I haven't seen many people talk about this book and I'm looking forward to hearing other people's opinion on it.
