2024.05.15 14:20 AliosPony Best Day to Release Music for a YouTube Musician

Hey everyone, I'm seeking some advice.
I lead a music band primarily promoted through YouTube, where our niche animated music videos occasionally go viral. Although we have a following on Spotify, it is considerably smaller than on YouTube. Traditionally, we've released new material on Fridays to coincide with international release day and take advantage of the New Music Friday playlists.
However, recent statistics from our YouTube channel show that the vast majority of our audience is online on Saturdays, with Fridays attracting significantly fewer viewers. As a YouTuber, I understand the importance of the first few hours after release for future algorithmic promotion. Given that most of our audience comes from our YouTube videos, I'm considering switching our release day to Saturday. But I'm concerned that this change might affect how well the Spotify algorithms promote us.
While I don't care a lot about making it onto the Billboard charts—our music is too niche to appeal to a broader audience—I do care about organic promotion on Spotify, like Release Radar and Spotify Radio, which certainly helps with stream counts. Now, I'm torn between optimizing for YouTube's algorithm and Spotify's, I'm unsure which has the greater impact on our projects.
So, my question is: am I overthinking this? If I release on Saturday, will my tracks still reach potential listeners on Spotify, or are my chances much reduced? How can I make an informed decision about this? I haven't found much information online, so I thought I might ask here.
Thanks!

I can always add a question/answer to this post if it becomes a common question as well!

Common Questions

If the signed version SOLD OUT, will it restock??
  • Sometimes they do a quick restock with cancelled orders but they are usually gone very quickly. Consider checking back every so often.
The website I went to only has a "Random" version option for the album. Can I pick which version I want?
  • Not usually. Most sites at least on the Korean side like Withmuu and places are usually pretty good at giving you 1 of each if you order one of each version. They tend to "try" to give you an even amount of each version if you bulk buy. For Target they were bad about giving you duplicate albums for Formula of Love so order at your own risk if you buy multiple copies. Can always go to the store and try to exchange if you get duplicates.

2024.05.14 20:21 Ill_Variation_2480 TTPD's new nickname "Female Rage: The Musical" should upset you.

Edit: If you are going to comment on the length of this post, please don't. This is not a simple snark but rather an actual critical think piece about feminism and Taylor Swift.

Introduction

Pertaining to Taylor Swift, "Female Rage" has deviated from its intended meaning after Swift debuted a new performance of The Tortured Poets Department during the Eras Tour. Now, according to Swift's use of the phrase, female rage is interpreted as public backlash against Swift's dating choices rather than as a response to the broader injustices against women and women's rights. This post examines Taylor Swift's flawed feminism, philanthropy, branding, and the controversial trademark petition for the phrase "Female Rage: The Musical". Swift's background as an entertainer, indeterminate politics, and alignment with capitalism over feminism pervades her legacy, again threatening her public tolerance as not just an individual but as a brand.

Once Upon a Female Rage...

If you were cognizant in the early 2010's, you've heard countless jabs at Taylor Swift in the media. Magazines, radio, or online. Music critics did not take her seriously as a songwriter; parents put a woman on an unrealistic pedestal as the ideal role model for their children; she dated too much and used men as lyrical fodder. No matter the story, it inevitably spread, conjoined with everyone's respective opinions, and you'd be left to wonder, "Why does everyone hate this girl so much?"
Taylor's target demographic has always been young or adolescent girls, more so when Swift herself was one. She made music that spoke to the awkward misfit, cultivating a para-social relationship with fans on MySpace, then later twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, where Taylor posted relatable vlogs showcasing the life of a homegrown American girl. Taylor had a delayed public "growing up" and, compared to her female pop contemporaries, Swift never "gratuitously sexualized her image and seems pathologically averse to controversy" (and, apparently, never even had a sip of alcohol until she turned 21). She was more than happy to spin this narrative to allude to an inherent moral superiority above other women in the industry (Better Than Revenge, heard of it?), engaging in the very slut-shaming that she herself endured (the Madonna and Whore archetypes). The victim complex arose with the need to prove Taylor as a different type of pop girl. Based upon her holy and clean image, Swift had been dubbed "a feminist's nightmare", and that "[To Swift] other girls are obstacles; undeserving enemies who steal Taylor’s soulmates with their bewitching good looks and sexual availability." Feminism and Tennessee-Christian country values don't exactly mix, it seems.
Years later, Swift befriended Lena Dunham and thus experienced white feminism osmosis, where Dunham taught Swift that real feminists defend rapists, makes insensitive jokes about rape and abortion, and prioritize all-white casts. Swift then declared herself a feminist in 2014, saying,
"Becoming friends with Lena – without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for – has made me realize that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so."
I suppose the male-centric songwriting subject that permeates Swift's discography contained covert feminism and that we just didn't see that. Perhaps, the "Bad Blood" song and music video were written only in jest and not about poor Katy Perry, for Swift, as a feminist, would "never make it a girl fight" or tear other women down (though all Katy did was date your terrible ex-boyfriend and allegedly steal three backup dancers from your tour). In 2013, Swift said, in response to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's joke towards her serial dating, "There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women."
There was that time in 2015 Taylor said that Nicki Minaj was "invited to any stage [she is] on" (as if Taylor expects to have access to every stage, award, and platform that Nicki might not otherwise have as a black female artist...yikes!) in response to Nicki's criticism of the white + thin VMA nominations. Later, Nicki responded with confusion, as Swift continued, "It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..". Of course, this 'beef' was 'squashed' when Nicki performed with Taylor at the VMAs, with Nicki quite literally only having 38 seconds of stage time without Taylor. Maybe all that parading around with a legion of famous white women - similar to the way Taylor might've done with her numerous 1989-era handbags - was in fact a stance against gender inequality, and that this display of "girl power" should be enough to constitute Swift as a feminist icon.
Even while Swift says that Dunham informed her feminist outlook, she dances around the exact contents of those beliefs: "what she believes, what she says, what she stands for" is not exactly insightful towards what beliefs Swift might have inherited. Taylor never broaches women's rights topics such femicide, FGM, forced pregnancy & marriage, sex trafficking, women in slavery, women's financial and political oppression, women's educational rights, women's health, or women's autonomy, so we can assume she only gives a fuck about "girls supporting girls" (whatever that fucking means).
Despite some questionable (and sometimes vindictive) behavior, Taylor as a young woman did not deserve every media lashing that she received. We cannot deny that most headlines and criticisms perpetuated a misogynistic rhetoric which has plagued Swift for a majority of her career. Acknowledging events such as the development of her ED, her sexual assault trial, "Famous" lyric and MV depiction of Taylor, and the explicit Twitter deepfakes, for example, as both disgusting and unfortunate things that happened to a young woman in Hollywood does not negate the fact that Taylor is mostly a performative feminist.

Get Your Fucking Ass Up and Be a Philanthropist, It Seems Like Nobody Wants to Be a Philanthropist These Days

In 2013, Taylor Swift cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the Taylor Swift Education Center at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. The donation amount - $4 million - was the largest individual artist gift ever donated to the Country Music Hall of Fame, which is, of course, mentioned on Swift's website. The two-story facility features three classrooms, an instrument room, and an interactive children's exhibit gallery. Swift also performed at "All for the Hall" charity shows and has donated numerous artifacts from her career (such as notable guitars, tour costumes, etc) to the museum.
This was over 11 years ago, and it is still the only notable philanthropic contribution Taylor Swift has made.
For a woman of her net worth and stature, and a woman who recognizes the difficulties for women in film and music, you would think that Taylor Swift might establish a scholarship program for women to study the arts or something. Perhaps Swift might even consider becoming a member of organizations that support female artists, or one that supports LGBTQ+ causes (since she is now proudly an ally), yet she remains superficial with her graces. Broader philanthropy, such as donating relief aid to Palestinian women or women impacted by violence and discrimination will probably never receive any financial support from Miss Swift because then she'd be using her money towards philanthropies involving anyone but white entertainers.
She even says herself in Miss Americana, "My entire moral code as a kid and now is a need to be thought of as 'good'." Well, she's certainly thought of as good, though her actions say otherwise. She's more than happy to do a vaguely altruistic song and dance for a clip-worthy interview quote and mass appeasement, then fuck off to one of her mansions on a 20 minute private jet flight, rather than actually contribute to anything pertaining to the causes she has endorsed. Yet, far too many people continue to give a woman such as her their money, time, and energy, and she hoards these resources to herself.

I Like Some of the Taylor's Songs, But What the Fuck Does She Know About Feminism?

Swift continued with her self-proclaimed feminist campaign, positioning herself as a political activist and LGBTQ+ ally in the Miss Americana documentary. The primary focus of the documentary consists of the sexual assault trial, Andrea Swift's cancer diagnosis, Taylor's ED and body dysmorphia, media scrutiny, and, largely, finally speaking up about her politics publicly, mostly her opposition to the 2018 Tennessee Republican senate candidate, Marsha Blackburn, and Blackburn's beliefs. Swift says, following a scene discussing her experience during the trial,
"I just couldn't really stop thinking about it. And I just thought to myself, next time there is any opportunity to change anything, you had better know what you stand for and what you want to say."
We must ask ourselves, though: when has Swift ever spoken up to change anything? Okay, pulling her entire catalogue from Spotify because they didn't pay their artists enough and similarly pulling her catalogue from Apple Music are changes that she leveraged due to her revenue potential and power, but they are not pertinent to the average woman's rights. Moreover, these are issues that directly impacted Taylor's income, which was enough reason for her to protest in the first place. Swift has sold the most units for a female artist in first week sales, is the first female artist with 100k monthly Spotify listeners, is the first female artist to win the Album of the Year Grammy 4 times, and is the first female artist to do X, Y, and Z, all while being inoffensive and family-friendly to boot. The actual Taylor Swift seems unwilling to compromise the brand of Taylor Swift by contributing in meaningful ways to feminist causes, especially if it is for women outside of America and Hollywood.
The reason political anthems such as "The Man" and "Only the Young" of the Lover era feel disingenuous and corporate is because, well, it is. Taylor has taken every opportunity to advance her career or public image at the expense of other women. What is truly genuine to Taylor's outlook on other women is vying for male attention, taking down female competition, and vocalizing feminist injustices only if they directly impact her and her money. Some will argue that it's satisfactory for a woman with such a huge platform to even TALK about feminism, but that just isn't enough. It's even less impressive when you candidly look at the scope of her feminist lens: "If I was the man, then I'd be THE MAN", or "I really resent the ‘Be careful, buddy, she’s going to write a song about you’ angle, because it trivialises what I do", and, of course, "We all got crowns". Feminism, but only when it happens to me. It gets worse when you look at Taylor's track record of copying other famous women and removing other female artists as potential threats to her pop prowess.
It's good for PR to align yourself with certain blanket feminist and political beliefs, therefore good for branding, therefore good for ticketing and merchandise sales, therefore good for business. And Taylor Swift is a business.
She's not a feminist. Taylor Swift is a capitalist.

I Can't Pay Those Sweatshop Workers a Livable Wage or Benefits! How Else Would I Make My Billions?

Recently, Taylor's team filed to trademark the phrase "Female Rage: The Musical" after Taylor said during Paris N1 of the Eras Tour,
"So you were the first ones to see The Tortured Poets at the Eras Tour...or as I like to call it, 'Female Rage: The Musical'."
This trademark petition was filed last week on Saturday, and news comes about just as numerous unofficial fan-made merch designs have cropped up with this phrase plastered on Fruit of the Loom basics. I'm of the opinion Swift's team motioned for a trademark so that they can send out cease & desists to all those that make knockoff merch, which disrupts potential sales for Bravado, UMG's choice merchandising company; however, since it was filed earlier, perhaps Swift has bigger plans with the bizarre use of the gendered phrase. One Swiftie referred to the phrase "female rage" as "a funny Eras Tour joke". Could it be a possible fourth version of the Eras Tour Movie? Whatever the reason, the motion to capitalize off of such a concept is disgusting, but not unsurprising, for a woman that profits on her vain feminism.
Swift, through her company, TAS Rights Managements, has also trademarked over 200 phrases, including "1989", where she owns the property rights to this calendar year on keychains, phone cases, sunglasses, stationary, bags, beverage ware, clothing, entertainment services, your subconscious, and, of course, Christmas ornaments.
The vapid consumerism in Swiftie culture is, frankly, disgusting. Bravado's sustainability statement is non-existent, the quality control is abysmal, and the materials they use are horrible. The materials, such as acrylic and polyester, are made from petrochemicals. This means they are non-renewable, shed microplastics, and are quite toxic in production. The manufacturing process to make all of those lazy-rushed Eras Tour logo graphic tees is a huge blow to environmental well-being. Apparently, though, Swifties don't give a fuck. They sell out products in seconds and either have to face the manufactured scarcity or buy from a scalper that resells for 200% of the already ridiculous retail price. This doesn't include the environmental impact of vinyl records, CD, and cassette production, of which Taylor produces many variants that sell unsustainable amounts.
If we're talking about women's rights violations, why is no one acknowledging the women that work in the inhumane sweatshop conditions that have to pump out fugly t-shirts and hats? The millions of plastic microfiber dander they are inhaling, or the toxic dyes that touch their bare skin? Are they being compensated fairly for their skilled labour and are they in safe working environments? Do these women have minimal bargaining power, and do they have authority over their worker's rights? Is Taylor Swift female raging at their injustices? Does Taylor Swift ever feels bad that her wealth was built on the backs of women of color, disadvantaged by the demands of the global economy and garment industry? Do you think she ever says a little white feminist prayer for them before she goes to sleep at night?
What's even crazier is not that Taylor herself doesn't care, it's that Swifties don't care. There CANNOT BE ethical billionaires. You only make a billion dollars if you are exploiting other human beings for capital gain. Based on public perception of the possible "Female Rage: The Musical" trademark, it seems like Swifties are already asking for merch with this phrase. "If Taylor made it, I'd buy it." Oh, cool. So not only do you champion Miss Swift's avarice and billionaire status, but you also are unashamed to admit to your blind consumption of her music and merchandise, no matter where they might originate in production or sincerity. Just as Swift takes and takes and takes, Swifties' consumerism of Taylor Swift cannot be quelled.
The tortured artist's most vulnerable and sincere poetry...available now in 21 different versions!

I Am Tortured Poet, Hear Me Whinge

Look - even if Taylor's intention is to characterize TTPD as more "tortured" and "angry", the main thread of the album is "I was ghosted by my decade-long situationship with a controversial indie boy and my fucking stupid fans wrote a 'Speak Up Now' open letter prompting me to drop him" anger, which is adequately expressed in the lyrics and performances. The extent of Taylor's "female rage" on TTPD is on tracks such as "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?", which contends with relentless media scrutiny; "But Daddy I Love Him", where Swift firmly states she'll date whoever she likes no matter how "Sarahs and Hannahs" may react; and "The Albatross", a track mythologizing her reputation and the consequences of dating her. Of course, these coincide with deep psychological wounds that formed during Swift's early years in the media, and so, from her feminist perspective, these subjects tackle the misogyny and double standards that she faced.
Yet Taylor Swift still has no grounds to be claiming that TTPD best exemplifies female rage and therefore she, in the context of this album, is female rage incarnate. As the daughter of a stock broker and mutual fund marketing executive, Taylor was born into wealth and allowed privileges like trips and subsequent relocation to Nashville all so that she might get a record deal. Her father even invested at least $120,000 into the then-fledgling label, Big Machine Records, which ensured Taylor's place with Borchetta after leaving her dead-end development deal with Sony. The fact that her parents were able to buy her a fucking brand new guitar for Christmas and pay for music lessons says so much about the financial security and safety of her childhood.
Money is privilege and protection, and despite Swift's experiences with misogyny and loser boyfriends, she does not know what female rage is.
Her rage is derived from her frustrations with her obsessive fans pulling the moral superiority card on Taylor in response to her rebound with Matty Healy. That's literally it. She's just pissed that the monster she created is no longer obediant, it's become a feral, sovereign entity that depletes the world of its natural resources and thinks it is more intelligent than it actually is because it's mommy has started to talk to it with big words. Apparently, 'illicit', 'elegy', 'nonchalant', and 'precocious' are considerably big words for the oafish monster, and I find it strange that this level of literacy is present in a group of fans that allegedly have GPAs of 3.5 or higher, but I digress.
Taylor Swift has never been one paycheck away from destitution. Taylor Swift has never experienced racial discrimination. She may have instances of gender discrimination, but she possesses the ideal white, blonde American beauty standard and therefore reaps the benefits of being a conventionally attractive woman. Taylor Swift has sufficient social capital. Taylor Swift is a billionaire woman prolonging her victimhood though she, as a woman, has mostly had control over her image and music (unlike her contemporaries). Taylor Swift is NOT entitled to be championed for her "female rage", nor should she be. Taylor Swift has never even been the struggling artist, for fuck's sake. I don't give a fuck if she's trying to fill the empty lunch tables of her past. Taylor Swift purporting herself, her unpolished album, and her lukewarm feminism as a musical bleeding with female rage is asinine.

Sigh Try and Come For My Job, Poors

Out there in the world right now is a 23-year-old woman, a recent college grad, who works as a barista. She has to wake up and get ready to go into a minimum wage job because she cannot get a job in her field. She doesn't have healthcare benefits or sick time, so she has to go into work no matter how she's feeling. All day long she is berated by vicious customers and creepy men, and, exhausted from being on her feet, she knows she has to go home to her shitty roommate that never does the dishes and her roommate's shitty dog. To comfort herself, she considers getting a treat, but thinks against it when she remembers that matcha lattes cost $15 and they taste like milky dirt. She knows that she needs to buy groceries this week, and so the woman resolves to go home, but notices that her gas tank is low. She goes to put gas in the car, but the pump stops at $27.86 because that's all that she has in her checking account. The woman, bereft and reeling, sinks into the driver's seat. "Well," she thinks, her head in her hands, "at least I don't have Taylor Swift's job. I just couldn't imagine."
Fame is somewhat of a choice. If at any moment Taylor feels that she is misunderstood, misconstrued, or overwhelmed by public opinion, she can LEAVE the public eye - Lord knows she has the retirement fund and residuals to do so. In "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart", the TTPD song about meeting the demands of your career-zenith mega-tour while in the relationship trenches, Taylor ends the song by rambling,
"You know you're good when you can even do it with a broken heart...you know you're good...and I'm good, cause I'm miserable, and no one even knows!...try and come for my job."
Yeah, obviously we wouldn't know, you recently passed the billionaire threshold and are the most famous and in-demand performer in the world right now. Taylor Swift makes an estimated $10 to $13 million dollars A NIGHT on the Eras Tour. Furthermore, the Eras Tour movie grossed $261.6 million globally, (which, as the producer, Taylor takes home 57% of the ticket sales) not counting the streaming revenue from Amazon Prime Video and the estimated $75 million deal that Disney paid to have it on Disney+. We're not even considering the income from cheap plastic popcorn buckets and drink cups plastered with colored squares in her Era-specific likeness.
It's funny. Taylor Swift often said that being famous wasn't hard, that she "isn't complaining". I'm sure it is difficult to always have to present in a good mood, else you'll end up misrepresented in the media, and I'm sure it's invasive to virtually have no privacy or semblance of anonymity. Still, Taylor Swift shows up each night of tour and performs. For a majority of her career, she has penned her sad songs while on the road. Most of "Red", her breakup album, was written in the thick of the Speak Now World tour. Now, some Swifties say they almost "feel bad" for attending the Eras Tour with Swift's revelations in this song, that they have had a 'dimmed experience' upon hearing Taylor's misery whilst performing. Despite the fact that Taylor said that "this was the happiest she's ever been" at Gilette Stadium in May, the lyrics "boohoo, woe is me, smile for the cameras and make the fans happy!!!" are jarring for Eras attendees.
While Taylor Swift was making double-digit millions a night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and feeling miserable, Ana Clara Benevides Machado passed away due to heat exposure. The concert promoters, Time For Fun, are now the subject of a criminal investigation due to their lack of adequate hydration and safety. Taylor Swift cancelled the Sunday show that was to follow and offered VIP tent tickets to Benevides Marchado's family, which was a kind gesture, but perhaps incongruous to the incident of which they were offered as consolation. Everyone grieves differently, of course, but I'm not sure attending the very show at the very same venue that my daughter or sister passed away in two days prior, where the singer CONTINUED the show despite her death, would be healthy for closure.
There was no female rage at the show as Swift never saw Benevides Machado pass out. There was no female rage towards the disregard for fans as humans while Swift elected to proceed with her Brazil tour dates despite the country being in historic heatwaves (at risk of overheatting herself). If Taylor Swift was so shaken by touring with a broken heart or a fan's passing, she wouldn't have added an additional North American leg of Eras just two months after the Matty breakup. She's brokenhearted but willing to mend the cracks with your money and move onward with her worldwide female rage induced pillaging.
No matter what happens, even if you die at a Taylor Swift concert, Taylor collects a big fat check and flies away. She doesn't know you as anything other than a conversion rate or earning potential despite what her nearly 20-year long parasocial relationship with fans might otherwise indicate. She knows that, while some Swifties are without disposable income, they feel obligated to spend on a "48 Hours Only!" exclusive vinyl variant instead of necessities because they are so entrenched in Taylor Swift's intoxicating celebrity, they'll prioritize materialistic fandom before their needs. This is good enough for her because this means she can expand her real estate portfolio and finance her cat's lavish lifestyles. They're worth an estimated $100 million dollars. Her three cats could pool their net worth and solve world hunger.
While you and I might be denied bereavement leave and barely surviving the current political and economic climate, Taylor Swift has to, instead of gets to, perform for stadiums at full attendance for three nights in a row across the globe. You and I might be replaced by AI at our longtime jobs, but Taylor Swift is threatened with losing more and more money each time you listen to a "Stolen Version" of her songs. If we don't buy every variant of all of her albums, then who is going to pay for the fucking cats?
It is tone deaf to spend as she spends and lives as she lives in this economy, but this is her reality. She was able to donate $100,000 to all of her tour truck drivers, and that's wonderful, but it leads me to wonder about the ethos of the 2020s where one woman can hoard such life-changing amounts of money. Remember in 2014 when she gave a fan $90 ($120 in today's money) to get Chipotle because she had no fucking clue how much it cost? This is a 34-year-old woman who is increasingly out of touch with the reality for working class people and women in general. Normal everyday adults must wake up and go to their thankless jobs, and yet Taylor Swift, despite all her riches, incessantly references the lows of her life and career as a public figure and entertainer to farm sympathy and drive sales. And still, the corporate women have latched onto "I cry a lot, but I am so productive! It's an art!" as their cubicle battle cry.
Do you think that, from up in her private jet, Taylor Swift gazes at the world through her poetic, tortured eyes, and thinks, "All the little people, in their cars, walking, going about their lives...all those girls that don't support girls...do they know that I've made an album about female rage?"

Conclusion/TLDR

Thank you for reading. I would love to hear your critical insights towards this entire ordeal: TTPD, the trademark, the implications of it all.
TLDR: Taylor Swift is a bad feminist and is delusional to think that the TTPD eras set exemplifies female rage at women's injustice.

2024.05.14 17:32 Freckledd7 Is there something weird going on with the housing market (specifically long term renting)?

While walking around I saw some billboards with rent listings and they are insanely cheap. Like from 30k to 80k. I understand that location plays a big role and I have no clue where the good areas are but online I find similar prices for renting. Is there something I am missing? Are people just desperate to get vacancies filled? Are these really shit houses? Are there other costs I am not aware of?

LinkedIn SEO is all about optimizing your profile and content to boost your visibility and ranking, offering a myriad of opportunities for career progression, business networking, and establishing a prominent presence within your industry.
When you fine-tune your profile’s headline summary, work experience, and skills section with specific keywords, you can boost the likelihood of appearing in LinkedIn’s search results.
Imagine someone searching for specific keywords or skills related to your professional background – a well-optimized profile significantly increases the chances of your profile being featured in their search results.

2024.05.14 04:14 TheCryptoCrow Are there any big Theater Productions in Tampa?

My wife and I are fairly new to the Tampa area, up from Cape Coma about 8 months ago. As a passion project we have been producing a play for the end of the month (in my profile banner so as not to be spammy) but I've been finding it very difficult to market the event as there doesn't seem to be many options. Am I missing something?
Have you gone to a play in the past year? If so, how did you find out about it?
The most I've been able to do so far as billboards starting next week, facebook ads that perform rather poorly and event calendars online.
I would GENUINELY love to know more about any options I should be considering to get the word out better. The play is a story woven through a variety of performances. I dont want to get too much into it here because I really dont want to "spam" as I'm genuinely interested in learning more about the area. I'm struggling a bit.
Thank you so much.

Key Principles of Graphic Design

Understanding the key principles of graphic design is essential for creating visually compelling and effective designs. These principles serve as the foundational guidelines that ensure your work communicates the intended message to your audience, especially within the South African context where cultural diversity and historical background profoundly influence visual communication.

Layout and Structure

The layout and structure form the backbone of graphic design. Utilising layout software, designers position text, images and incorporate features such as columns and advertisements to achieve a balanced and visually attractive product. For instance, in crafting layouts for newspapers, magazines, or books, the arrangement dictates how readers process information, making it crucial to guide the audience through the design in a logical sequence. South African designers must be adept at using tools like InDesign to create layouts that not only look good but also respect the cultural nuances and readability preferences of the local audience.

Typeface Design

Creating or selecting the right typeface is key to conveying your design's intended tone and personality. Each font carries its own weight and style, impacting how text is perceived. Original fonts designed for specific digital applications, including websites and adverts, must be readable, scalable, and aesthetically pleasing. South Africa's rich cultural tapestry offers an opportunity for typeface designers to explore unique font styles that reflect local heritage and language diversity, enhancing the global richness of typeface design.

The right colour palette can evoke emotions, communicate messages, and influence actions. In South Africa, with its vibrant landscapes and diverse cultures, colour holds significant importance. Ever wondered why your "I'm a Nigerian prince" email campaign didn't work? Well, it turns out AI is onto us... I mean, onto those who try such shenanigans.
Let me introduce you to the world where AI isn't just a cool feature in your smart home but is actually policing digital marketing like a pro. That’s right, artificial intelligence has become the lie detector test for online advertising, and it’s pretty darn good at sniffing out the fibs.
1. The Bot Police: First up, we've got AI systems that can detect bot traffic. These aren't your average mall cops; they're more like the cyber version of Sherlock Holmes. They can tell if your so-called "website visitors" are real people or just bots disguised in digital trench coats. If your traffic numbers are too good to be true, AI is ready to call your bluff.
2. The Click Fraud Crackdown: Next, there’s click fraud - the act of inflating ad clicks to drain competitor’s ad budgets or increase earnings for website owners. AI tools are now trained to pick up patterns that look fishy. Like if the same IP address clicked on your ad 500 times at 3 AM, AI’s going to raise an eyebrow (if it had one).
3. The Fake Influencer Filter: And don't get me started on fake influencers. AI is becoming adept at spotting anomalies in follower counts and engagement rates that scream "I bought my followers on eBay!" It’s looking at the quality of engagement—real people talking about real experiences, not just emojis dropped by bots.
4. Phantom Ad Placement Patrol: AI also targets schemes where ads are shown in non-viewable spaces or under layers of other content. It’s the digital equivalent of putting a billboard in the basement—nobody sees it, but you’re still paying for it. AI’s job here is like that friend who tells you when your tag is showing; it keeps things honest.
So, if you’re thinking about bending the rules in digital marketing, just remember: AI is watching. It’s getting smarter, faster, and more sarcastic (okay, maybe not the last one). So, keep it real, or you might just get a virtual knock on your digital door from AI saying, “I think you dropped this... your ethics.”
Let's chat about this - got any funny bot encounters or AI mix-ups to share? Or better yet, any tips on how to stay on the right side of our AI overlords?

2024.05.12 12:26 Time_Explorer9885 Thinking about a girl from my past constantly

I made a post about this situation a year ago, and didn't get much advice. I'm still in the same boat, so I figured why not try again. I don't know if this is the right subreddit for this, tell me if it isn't.
Basically, for over a year now, a girl from my past has been on my mind. We were at elementary school together. We were good friends. Then I moved away. She contacted me twice. The first time was a couple of months after I'd shifted. She said she really missed me and hoped to see me soon (my departure was abrupt - she didn't know I wasn't coming back). The second time was two years after I'd left - she asked how I'd been. I left her on read. By this point I hadn't thought of her in a long time. Apparently she did think of me, hence the message. Five years passed. I forgot about her. She likely forgot about me too.
Then, last year in March, I came across a photo of her online. Ever since then, can't get her out of my mind. I found myself developing feelings for her. I started seeing her name everywhere. I started seeing repeating numbers. 10-20 numbers a day. 1111, 2222, 3333, etc. Every day for months. Now they've lessened in quantity, still see a few each day. For example, yesterday, I saw 111 five times. I see them on car license plates, billboards, online, phone numbers, everywhere.
Could she be thinking of me too?
I personally really don't know, I don't even know if all this stuff is real or its all just coincidences and I'm just deluded. Which may likely be the case. Which is why I still haven't contacted her, after all this time. My doubts and fears are too strong. I hope to get some advice.

2024.05.12 00:30 ladyutopia7 Theory about why they tryna finish Drake

Theory about why they tryna finish Drake
  1. Niggas tired of him being on top. You not from here, lightskin and feminine (nail polish/hair beads/lip puckers/fruity drinks). Fuckin with Ja, Common, Harden, Serena’s Husband, Drama, Jorja Smith, Baby Keem girl, Future girls and who knows else. (Budden 52:25). Yet they still used him all these years.
  2. Strategy: He wasn’t outrapped, he was outlapped. Soon as he dropped Family Matters with the visuals, you can tell the nigga put a lotta energy and time into that. That’s probably why he was baiting him to drop. Not knowing he’d drop an hour after. Kendrick came with a strategy, foreshadowed by Q telling Cole fall back. “Oh yall taking it this way? I thought we was playin.” Joe speaks on this 1:25:00. It’s recency bias.
Plus, hating on Drake gets rewarded with likes and engagement online. 95% of people are followers and copy what others do so if I see Johnny get 40k likes off “Drake the type of guy” comment, shit lemme get mines too.
“But he’s a pedophile” Each girl did speak out in his defense.
“Drakes silent policy” Most companies have them. Similar to having assets in a holding company or LLC instead of your personal credit or name in case you get sued.
But I really think it’s the Universal Theory: Drake owns a piece of each artist at Universal and Gamma.
Lucien & UMG ties Cuz I’m lil ain’t no way everybody coming at you so hard. Ain’t that much hate for no nigga in the world. This really Thanos. So I’m like damn. What he do to make these niggas so mad? Then it hit me — a broken clock is right twice a day.
In that Justin LaBoy interview where he displayed equestrian levels of meat riding, Ye said Drake has a rich baby daddy named Lucian and UMG". Even in the Like That (Remix) he said again "Where's Lucian? Serve your master, nigga. You caught a little bag for your masters, didn't ya. Lifetime deal, I feel bad for niggas." And he was obviously left off the album and leaked it himself. But he seemed to eager from jump.
Lucian Grainge is the CEO of Universal Music Group (UMG) and the most influential person in the music industry. Some artists in this beef signed to him like Drake (Republic Records), Metro Boomin (Republic Records), The Weeknd (Republic Records), Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Bad Bunny. UMG dropped Kanye in 2021 after his antisemitic remarks.
So what this beef gotta do with Lucian? Might be cause favors Drake. One time, he got asked about Drake's budget and said, "If ever Drake or whenever Drake calls up and says he needs something for his project, I give it to him. He's the greatest." Drake mentioned Lucian and Universal in some songs:
  • "Shit done changed, billionaire talk to me different when they see my paystub from Lucian Grainge" (Having Our Way, Culture 3)
  • Only signin' the gang, we the new Lucian Grainge" (Pussy & Millions, Her Loss)
  • "Who the CEO of Universal? They mistaken. Cause Google sayin' Lucian , but that just doesn't make sense. Who fillin' up the piggy bank? Who bringin' home the bacon?" (Away from Home)
  • “Major distribution, labels call me. Bad Bunny numbers, it's a robbery. Five hundred millions, just for Aubrey" (Major Distribution, Her Loss).
See how that could rub niggas the wrong way? Imagine working a job and your boss says in front of the next staff meeting “He’s my favorite.” Everybody gone hate that nigga and he’s probably gone feel a lil too bigheaded/isolated when dealing with peers. Vice had a luxury hotel manager speak on how they would divide and conquer the cleaning staff by race to better performance. They’d say to the black team “The Mexicans are killing yall today, better catch up!”, saying it was intentional among management to prevent them from banding together. Not only at that hotel but it’s a known strategy in the hotel and other industries. Seem like the same shit, given everyone in this beef are coworkers at Universal.
Now, in late 2021 Drake’s contract was up and that was bad for Universal and the industry. Cuz it’s stick up time.
  • “Drake is about to get the biggest bag in the history of the music business by far,” said Stoute, chief executive of United Masters
  • Russ, who said: “You think that if Drake right now, completely independent … if Drake posts a picture on the ‘Gram of his new album, link in bio — fuck a link in bio, “new album out” — and he was fully independent, Drake will make $10 million a week for fucking 60 weeks.” Added Stoute: “If Drake goes independent, the music business is over.”
  • Says one top music attorney: “Drake has the bargaining power to negotiate a net profit split with the best deal terms and a humongous advance up front.”
The last quote is crucial. Drake and everyone knew it was in the industry’s best interest financially to give him whatever he wants but the thing is — Drake costs a lot. What incentive do you give the biggest artist in an industry where A) labels aren’t really wanted or needed and B) like LeBron, paying what he’s really worth will bankrupt the already downsizing industry? Well, you give him equity. Money on the back end. But from where? Other artists and labels. Keep in mind this was around the time he resigned for the $400m.
  • Under me, I see all the people that claim they over me and above me, I see nobody I'd have to be dead for them to say you took it from me. The 20 percent I own of you that we own is in my tootsie's money." (Champagne Poetry, Certified Lover boy)
  • Please don't google my net worth, the numbers are way off. I mean, if you comparin' it to what I really made off with I'm more like Bernie with all the earings that they came off. Trust me it was nothin' light, holmes **they tried to give me slice of the pie and I took the knife home." (Remorse, Certified Lover Boy)
  • There’s also a bar on the leaked version of Splash Bros that Drake sent the C&D for. “Lucian and me are like Kobe & Shaquille - that’s the reason going independent never had an appeal” (Maybe he sent that cease and desist because he was talking too much and people would catch on. But like the Streisand Effect says, trying to hide something usually makes it bigger).
Larry, Apple & Gamma On Family Feud, Drake raps “somebody get Larry Jackson on the phone, I need some ownership if we pressin go” and Larry was vacationing in the Maldives not doing much career wise and said that was a wake up call and had him asking is there another level to this video game?”
Now, Larry Jackson worked at Apple and was key in signing deals for Apple Music when it launched, mainly Drake and OVO Sound Radio. It was a good deal for both; Drake gave Apple Music exclusives to compete with Jay-Z and friends at Tidal (before they all realized this was dumb af and put their music on every platform) while Apple gave money, visibility and placements. Larry maintained the position at Apple until 2023 when he founded “gamma.” with the previous Interscope (UMG) CFO Ike Youssef.
Yousseff said gamma was an idea from their Interscope days. Larry said he wanted to create something “that will see him acquiring or joining forces with major artists and brands, with endeavors in music, films, merchandise, fashion, web3, and other areas,” Variety reported. But it's not really a label, more like a private equity company who buy shares of artists' publishing. Private equity usually buys companies that are new, or underperforming and find ways to revamp it. It raised a billion dollars with partners like Clive Davis, Apple and majority investor Todd Boehly (remember Todd). Gamma also acquired a distribution platform, Vydia who owns Shade Room, and distribution rights for artists like Usher, Rick Ross. Under gamma is Sexyy Red, 4batz. Which makes sense why he always promoting them. Because why promote Ross and Meek’s album but not Chainz and Wayne’s album?
But the partner Eldridge Industries is the key. Todd Boehly is a very wealthy powerful business owner that has dozens of companies in every sector under his holding company Eldridge Industries. Boehly is the largest investor in gamma followed by A24 and Apple. Eldridge Industries also owns all of the following in music, media, entertainment and sports: eldridge.com/businesses
  • gamma.
  • Billboard/Billboard Music Awards
  • PMC, Billboard’s parent company
  • Rolling Stone
  • Deadline
  • Variety
  • A24
  • SXSW
  • The Shade Room
  • Deadline
  • Daily Hits Double
  • Luminate
  • Dick Clark Productions
  • The Hollywood Reporter
  • VIBE
  • Life is Beautiful
  • Golden Globes
  • Latin Music Awards
  • American Music Awards
  • Streamy Awards
  • ViralNation
  • Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Chelsea FC
You ever wonder why Drake said fuck the Grammys but still showed up every year to Billboard Music Awards? And how A24 got to executive produce Drake’s Euphoria? Remember when Drake “rented” Dodger stadium? And his love for soccer? LeBron too? Same Chelsea team. And notice Drake start hanging around content creators more the same time Boehly invested in Viral Nation? A social media management and brand partnership company based in Toronto. Now see how that meeting happened to call for a truce and articles claiming Kendrick won that feel a lil premature? Look at the sites.
Now It’s funny how the line “Kendrick just opened his mouth. Somebody hand him a Grammy right now.” is true. 6 BBA, 17 Grammys. Drake? 39 BBA, 5 Grammys. Unlike like the Grammys, where a group of artists, producers, songwriters, and engineers vote, the Billboard Music Awards winners are based on album and digital songs sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring, and social engagement. And they use the same data where Drake’s friend owns a part of. Luminate formerly Nielsen, reports music sales after merging with the Rolling Stone charts, now running how charts and data is counted. If Kendrick can buy bots for engagement in this beef to skew public opinion, who’s to say Drake ain’t been doing for a minute? Reminds me of what Russ said on Schulz’s Flagrant about how streaming farms work. Maybe Kendrick was right too when he said “It ain’t just me I’m what the culture feeling. The fact Drake’s peers ain’t voting for him or coming to his defense right now says something.
Now lines like “If your pub was up for sale, I’d buy the whole thing.” make more sense and Kendrick painting him as Mike and himself as Prince given how Michael Jackson bought half of Sony’s catalogue to spite them (and Eminem’s when he dissed him) versus how Prince hated the labels and was set on owning masters, how Kendrick has pGLang. It’s funny because Sony would end up going against Mike, sabotaging his releases, similar to how fans think Universal’s and streaming services are doing to Drake now. Especially if you’re collecting publishing money in a silent recession that the label and other artists could be using, not so far-fetched to think backdoor meetings start happening. Or when you collect hip-hop memorabilia that belongs in the African-American Smithsonian.
Even down to the servicing and Push Ups being mysteriously taken from streaming. It felt like that Not Like Us was proper and mad quick release. Heard it playing on TNT in the playoffs hours later. Then you get the odd dislike ratio…And videos of actual Kendrick bots on Twitter. Listen to Joe’s takes. (1:39:25)
So with all that, you can see how it’s bigger than Drake and Kendrick. Kendrick represents every artist, executive and person who ever felt slighted by or just tired of Drake’s reign. Drake likely has a quiet deal or a cut of gamma thru his relationship and heavily back by Larry Jackson, Lucien and Todd. Some think this is why Todd made Rolling Stone write Kendrick won. Drake 'middle manned’ relationships between corporations and artists, for execs who ain’t have pull with rappers but now, his peers found out Drake been eating off them and ain’t even tryna share the splits.
If that’s true, I can see how they could want this nigga outta here. The casuals gotta chill though. That dick ridin shit corny. Until any legal shit happens, it’s wraps. People always hated Drake but never had the heart to say it until everyone else did. Thats hoe shit to me.
The beef is great for hip hop. It’s similar to Pac and Big, even down to coasts but moreso Nas and Hov how it’s just rap and ain’t gone spill into the streets. Almost like Mase responding to Cam after he kept poking him in the head. Everyone wants to hear from the quiet nigga whether it’s school, work, whatever. And I’m sure Drake’s house getting messed with is XO’s retaliation work or fans looking for likes. But the more time passes, the more truths gone come out. I’m interested to see what music looks like after this. How stingy Drake get with features, who aligns with who. If he replies or if he goes ghost for a minute. Lord Knows.

2024.05.11 19:31 theitgirlism Boroughsburg Custom World Issue

Hello! I apologize for this post. I can't currently post screenshots (I go in and between two computers) but I will provide them asap if needed. I recently downloaded the custom world called Boroughsburg, the creator hasn't been online in a while, so I can't ask them directly. I did everything mentioned in the read me file, I also have downloaded all the packages, including the additional ones, I own Riverview, and such.
However, everytime I open the game (both new game and save file) I am greeted by tons of billboards and black, non-existent lots. I also have no bridge, no train. My options are set on high. I tried creating a new Sims 3 folder and reinstalling the world. Nothing helped.
Does anyone know where I could go wrong? Does anyone have similar issue? Thank you.

2024.05.11 18:19 Ambitious-cow-2971 Best business to start

Tell me some ideas u guys have or which u think is best from the ones I listed
I was thinking sneaker biz - there very cheap on Alibaba, very good market for them I think, and can scale them well, I think the only complicated thing for me is knowing what shoe sizes to get and amount of pairs of the same shoe or size
Clothes - Alibaba kuna bales za shein clothes men and women and ziko cheap sana like $1/kg and kama hujui shein they just have really nice trendy clothes and the market is there but I feel it’s super competitive juu kila mtu anafanya hii biashara
Farming food/animals - niko na acres mingi lakini I also feel this business is competitive , I already do some of it with fruits and animals but finding people to sell too at good prices is hard
Smokies- hii ni kama kitu id employ someone to do on weekends, nikiwa out, at popular clubs ama matatu stage ama cbd naonaga watu mingi wako kwa hizo stands, me personally I can spend like 200-300 there juu I’m obsessed so I feel like at busy places there’s some money there lakini si kitu kubwa hustle ndogo too
Marketing agency - this just seems to me like a biz in demand that’s not really saturated , niliona mtu ako na 600M kwa statement yake na biz yake ni marketing firm I’ve been inspired since although their also an investor. I feel it’s profitable as a lot falls under the umbrella of a marketing agency consulting, photography, billboard ads, social media ads, influencer marketing, web design, branding, and probably some more I can’t think of.
Wig business - I did some math the other day and was inspired, naona izo high end beauty pages on IG selling human hair wigs from 20k-100k and people actually buy. I did some math, to make just 2M, I’d only need 100 people to buy a wig at 20K each , na iyo bei ni kidogo sana for wigs juu it’s almost the average price if not lowest for real human hair. Sasa shida ni kama like the shoes, knowing which lengths to get and how many of them, and styles, also thought I could learn myself how to make them or hire someone to make them n just buy bundles and could price them higher since their custom? Sijui
Cleaning company - aki hii ni kitu ingine, once I was shopping for professional cleaning, Nikienda online, calling businesses, they were quoting me from 10-20k na nyumba si kubwa ni services tu, ata kwa jiji wameniambia 2500 for bathroom only , Aki I was shocked by this market, then I saw what the government is paying cleaners (millions) probably lies but still I’m sure they pay a bit hefty, nikienda tiktok naona cleaning companies na extermination talking about 60k for service, just so shocked but these people I talked to were so firm on their prices which made me believe people actually pay these prices and it would be a good biz.
Real estate company - sijui mambo ya agency vizuri najua tu mambo ya commissions watu wanapata wakiuza nyumba na ni mingi sana na niko na connections mingi in this field in terms of ppl who’d be interested in buying and people who know people na even then, naona tu all it takes is good marketing and content creation na ig and TikTok wataonesha your target audience. @sydiatherealtor page is full with people in the comments ready to buy and it inspires me. I think finding house renters/buyers is a good field for the unemployed to go in juu u need nothing but a phone with a camera and Instagram account and a lot of determination. I’ve worked with a lot of them and they make money from viewing and commission from when they rent, it’s really good.
Travel agency - hii ni popular kabisa na I feel the market is not oversaturated, people really pay over $10,000 for a trip planned for them to come to kenya I think it’s mind blowing. I think the biggest hurdle would just be marketing and getting the clients.
Furniture and household items- hii niliona when I was shopping for furniture, it’s very overpriced here, these same things I was buying I was finding on aliexpress and Alibaba for half the price and it made me think it’s a really good business, from beds, tables, mattress , kitchen stuffs, chairs, lots of shit. But this one would be more tailored towards watu wanafanya bnb, naona robes ziko like $2 ppl here sell for 1000bob, towels $2, custom and embroidered toiletries 🧴
T shirt printing - I feel this one is just ok but can be lucrative
Land scaping - very lucrative business especially in places like Karen or runda or places with new developments and I think it’s high paying
Moving business - hii niliona ni Kali, once got a quote for 100k flat rate just for moving 😭

2024.05.11 08:42 Trick_Minimum3190 About Her Voice: A conversation on Mariah Carey with author and critic Andrew Chan

About Her Voice: A conversation on Mariah Carey with author and critic Andrew Chan
About Her Voice A conversation on Mariah Carey with author and critic Andrew Chan BY DANIELLE AMIR JACKSON DECEMBER 21, 2023
Photo by Raph_PH via Flickr. Artistic rendering by Oxford American. Courtesy Wikimedia Commons This exclusive feature is an online extension of the OA’s annual music issue. Order the Ballads Issue and companion CD here.
Singing is “the most enigmatic of performing arts,” the author, editor, critic, and self-professed “diva lover” Andrew Chan writes. It’s a simple matter of air and anatomy: breath moves through closed vocal folds which then vibrate and resound throughout the throat, chest, head, or sinuses. But when we listen intently, transcendence is available to us. Raised hairs on the upper arm, a tingle on the back of the neck. The irrepressible urge to tap one’s toes. Transcendence is something we can feel–a physical sensation that unleashes the emotions and connects us to the divine. That’s why a host of spiritual traditions embrace the human voice as a conduit for worship, and in secular music, many of the most popular traditions–r&b and its variants, country, even rap—foreground some sort of vocal virtuosity. A skilled vocalist can “seduce us, haunt us, heal us regardless of the text they’re delivering or even the culture that surrounds them,” Chan writes.
In his first book, published just this past fall, Chan highlights the thirty-plus year career of Mariah Carey, whose five-octave vocal range; agile, multisyllabic melisma; and well-honed aptitude for catchy hooks and witty wordplay turned her into one of the most successful pop singer-songwriters of all time. Carey has earned five Grammys and nineteen number ones on the Billboard pop chart—the highest of any act besides the Beatles, surpassing Elvis. Two of her fifteen full-length albums are certified diamond, with sales of ten million or more in the United States alone. Why Mariah Carey Matters, part of the University of Texas Press’s Music Matters series, is the first book-length critical assessment of the artist’s wide-ranging career.
Chan makes the case that from the beginning, Carey’s vocal dexterity and range set her apart—her mastery at blending piercing whistle tones, fluttery, feminine whispers, muscular belts, and “leathery low” notes, often within the same song. “There’s something irrational, bizarre, and hazardous-sounding about the way Mariah hopscotches over and across vocal registers without warning or transition,” Chan writes. She also blended and mixed styles of singing, infusing both big, sentimental ballads and buoyant, weightless bops alike with gospel fervor; in the ’90s, alongside artists like Mary J. Blige and Jodeci, she contributed to the creation and commercial dominance of “hip-hop soul.” In her house remixes, often painstakingly re-recorded versions of her mainstream pop hits, she frequently scatted and improvised in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan. Equally impressive, and critical in understanding Carey, Chan says, is her “artistry outside the vocal booth.” She wrote or co-wrote all of her most enduring hits, including “Vision of Love,” “We Belong Together,” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” She’s produced herself and other artists, and is one of few women nominated for the Grammy Award for Producer of the Year (Non-Classical). It was an early honor, from 1992, for work on her second LP, Emotions.
Chan is one of my favorite writers and an important voice in contemporary music and film criticism. He’s vivid in his assessment of Carey’s musical gifts. He layers in details of his own upbringing to help us understand why certain songs and singers turned him into a student of the art. I love the way he brings the reader along with him—we’re watching and listening together as Carey delivers her gospel-drenched rendition of “America the Beautiful” on the NBA Finals in 1990, hearing her sing the climactic sea-ahhh as she “evokes rolling vistas and open water.” He acknowledges the blemishes on Carey’s career and the unpredictability of her voice, which he insists is not a recent phenomenon. He situates Carey in refreshing context: with Black singers of the ’80s who influenced her sound, and with other female songwriter-producers like Patrice Rushen, Teena Marie, and Angela Winbush, who don’t often receive credit for their prowess behind the boards.
“So much of the culture and money created during this era is the product of Black female creative energy,” writes Danyel Smith, another of my favorite music writers, in Shine Bright, her sweeping history of Black women in American pop. She’s talking about the middle of the twentieth century, when recordings like the Dixie Cups’ “Chapel of Love” achieved mammoth success that the performers—who came up with the arrangement we all know and love—were not credited for. Carey has received commercial rewards, and, as of late, critical adoration from outlets such as Pitchfork and Rolling Stone.
But Chan suggests we still haven’t absorbed the magnitude of Carey’s genius, that our cultural blinders have hindered our ability to understand the breadth of her labor and mastery. Carey’s upbringing as a biracial daughter of a white mom who raised her largely on her own; her sense of not fully belonging among Black or white people; her insistence on femininity in an industry that privileges masculine presentation when it doles out points for credibility. She used it all in her art—especially in her ballads. Over a long and wide-ranging conversation, Chan and I discussed Carey’s melancholy, artistic lineage, the feeling of singing, r&b, gospel, and transcendence.
Courtesy University of Texas Press Danielle Amir Jackson: Can we start with your background? I know you grew up in some American suburbs and in Malaysia. When did you begin to pay so much attention to Mariah Carey?
Andrew Chan: I moved around quite a bit as a kid. I was born in Minneapolis, in a great music city, but I didn’t live there long. My family moved to Tampa, Florida and then to Malaysia. After moving back to the States, I lived in Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina—the metropolitan New South.
In the nineties.
In the nineties. I moved to Atlanta… I think in ’97. I remember Butterfly had just come out. And I remember Usher was number one on the charts with “You Make Me Wanna…” Living in Atlanta and Charlotte in the nineties, I was one of the few Chinese Americans in school. For much of middle school and early high school, half of my friends were Black. So, there was a lot of exposure to the music that they were listening to. Hip-hop and r&b were becoming mainstream and dominating the charts. Having friends who were Black exposed me to more than just what was crossing over.
I also felt connected emotionally to Malaysian culture. My parents exposed me to some of the great Asian divas of the eighties and nineties. Mandarin and Cantonese pop were important for me until, maybe, first grade. So, I was listening to people like Anita Mui, Priscilla Chan, and Teresa Teng and was completely obsessed with them before I had much knowledge of American pop music. Even then my ear was attuned to how different they sounded. Anita Mui had this beautiful contralto voice. Teresa Teng was more of a mezzo soprano. And they had different vocal approaches. Even if I didn’t have the language to analyze that or express that at that age, I was really drawn to the variety of women’s singing. That fascination carried over to the period when I started becoming obsessed with American pop music and American divas, mainly through Whitney and Mariah. When I heard “I Will Always Love You” and the whole Bodyguard era, I’d never heard something like that before. That drew me to the soul tradition of American singing.
I don’t often hear people discuss Carey in the lineage of great American interpreters of ballads like Ella Fitzgerald or Frank Sinatra, and I really appreciate that it’s the note you lead with in your book—which parallels the way that Carey started her career. The OA’s annual music issue is a dive into ballads and the elasticity of the form. What’s special about ballads? Why might an artist like Carey launch her career with ballads?
Even though she became frustrated with Tommy Mottola molding her into an adult contemporary ballad singer, the demo was full of ballads. She co-wrote all those songs. She found different ways of making the ballad fresh and interesting for herself.
The ballad has always meant different things across time. If you were to compare Sinatra, singing an old jazz standard ballad like “Angel Eyes” or “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” what does that have in common with Mariah Carey’s “Can’t Let Go?” They’re slow. They’re about passionate love. This does a couple of things for a singer: It gives you space to really milk every note and moment; the listener is drawn into the space of the ballad and is invited to listen very closely in a way that you just aren’t if you’re competing with an up-tempo beat behind you or if you’re singing fast. The feat is more about rhythm than it is about holding out long notes. The ballad accentuates the tone of the singer’s voice. It creates an intimate connection with the listener. It also puts the singer at risk of being uncool because ballads are kind of forbidden. And that is why we love them. They can be uncool. They almost feel like something that we shouldn’t admit we listen to or respect because they, especially the sad ones allow us to wallow, which we’re not supposed to do if we’re grownups and we want to be serious and mature. We’re not supposed to sink into our feelings of longing and despair. But this is one of the places in our culture where we get access to that intensity of emotion, and the slowness of the music mimics the infatuated person’s inability to let go of love or inability to stop thinking about the beloved.
Mariah is an unabashedly sentimental singer, and that’s why it took so long for her to garner any kind of critical respect. She is in that tradition of musical wallowers. She loves her heartache. She loves to long and pine. She’s a bit of a masochist.
Many interesting people are.
Yeah. Ballads can be transportive to sing. The tempos are slower; you can really get your mouth around the words and feel each one of them. Because the song isn’t whizzing by at a crazy pace, you can build to a satisfying climax. You can go from low to high in this drawn-out, dramatic way. That shows the full capabilities of your voice.
When you say ballads are transportive, are you talking about a transcendent experience? The Holy Ghost?
A little bit. It’s to the point where you’re moving with your own performance, which is why singers sometimes get choked up when they’re singing their ballads, because it is such a vulnerable place to be. In karaoke, which most people don’t take seriously, if I’m singing a particular song and I’m really feeling it, I can get so lost in it.
“She loves her heartache. She loves to long and pine. She’s a bit of a masochist.”
ANDREW CHAN
I like what you said about ballads being almost contraband. I remember when people realized Beyoncé was starting the Renaissance tour with slow songs. It seemed almost like an anachronism.
Yeah, for her big house record. She’s a great ballad girl too. In terms of them being contraband, back in the Maoist era in China, love ballads were banned because they were seen as counterrevolutionary. If you were part of the revolution, you wouldn’t indulge in these individualistic displays of your own personal emotions. I do get into that a little bit in the book where I even had a moment in my teenage years where I was just like, These are pathetic. They’re a distraction from the real business of politics and liberation and revolution, you know?
We include a song by Fannie Lou Hamer on our compilation accompanying the issue. You made me think of Elaine Brown, who was chair of the Black Panther party and recorded songs and some of them are balladlike. They’re propagandist, one-note songs.
There is the political ballad too. I think there’s something about love ballads where it’s like surrendering and succumbing to feelings of longing, loss, yearning, desire. Of course, there’s misogyny involved in that too, because these are “feminized” emotions. Ideas about feminine hysteria are built into this hyperbolic style of singing as well. People forget that Whitney was booed and disrespected for much of her career. It’s funny that she and Mariah had a reappraisal where they’re legends now, but at the beginning of their careers, they were criticized for over-singing and being excessive.
I wonder why people didn’t say that about Luther Vandross. He’s super indulgent.
He’s so indulgent. “A House is Not a Home” or “Superstar”—those songs are seven minutes long or something. He had some pop crossover appeal, but he never hit it as big as Whitney and Mariah. But also, there’s a bit of misogyny in that, the difference between women doing it and men doing it. I mean, Al Green is a show-off. They’re all show-offs.
Let’s talk about the eighties. You say that “Can’t Let Go,” is a revision of “Make It Last Forever” by Keith Sweat and Jacci McGhee and compare Carey’s work as a songwriter-singer-producer to Teena Marie and Angela Winbush. And you go into quite a bit of depth into all her references and homages in Glitter: Indeep, Zapp, Cherrelle. I’m having a moment right now—perhaps I’m where Mariah was back in ’99 and 2000—but I’m so obsessed with the sounds and sights of the Black ’80s. Miki Howard, whom you also mention, has been heavy on my mind, alongside Anita Baker, Patrice Rushen, Regina Belle. In your opinion, what was special about that era in music, particularly in Black pop, and how was it connected to Carey’s debut?
I didn’t come into writing this book as an expert in eighties Black music. That is one of the areas where I felt a bit insecure because I felt I knew sixties and seventies r&b and nineties onward in terms of r&b, but for some reason the eighties were an area that I hadn’t explored sufficiently. I knew the major names and their works, but it is a decade that, when it comes to Black popular music, it’s so defined by one-hit wonders. Aside from the Whitneys and the Michael and Janet Jacksons and Lionel Richies, there weren’t a lot of a long-lasting careers that crossed over to non-Black audiences in a major way. Sometimes, DeBarge would have a pop hit, but for most of their significant catalog, mostly Black listeners were listening. I had to do a lot of catching up to get those sounds into my ears and really hear how they influenced Mariah. I think part of it is because eighties r&b is less canonized than the seventies and nineties. Even the nineties have experienced this resurgence of critical interest, but the eighties are almost like a blip. Part of it is where it came in the history of popular music—after the demise of disco, which really was a shaming of Black music by the white rock establishment. I’m sure it’s more complex than that, but that was certainly a dimension to that whole culture war. In the eighties, you have r&b coming out of the ashes of disco and utilizing the electronic elements that disco had been criticized or seen as superficial for. You get a lot of experimentation like Zapp—so kooky and goofy. The use of the talk box to manipulate vocals. You get club music, like Cherrelle, a sort of post-disco dance music, people having a lot of fun. Just like really deep grooves that went on for like six minutes. Gap Band, all that kind of stuff.
There’s the kind of fun side of eighties r&b, but then on the other side you have this luxuriousness, the plush textures of Quiet Storm, which began in the seventies, but really came into its own commercially in the eighties with people like Luther, Anita Baker—who sort of took the slow-roasted, slow-jam, boudoir sound of Isaac Hayes and Al Green and Smokey Robinson—and pushed it to a whole new level. Even when they were singing at the tops of their lungs, it was still smooth.
I hesitate to just generalize all eighties r&b, but I see those as the two parallel tracks. I think they both deeply informed Mariah’s aesthetic. I think Aretha is a huge influence on pretty much all r&b women singers. I think Mariah would cite her as the ultimate female influence, but I think when it comes to sonics, the luxuriousness, the Quiet Storm sound is so evident in songs like “Underneath the Stars” and “Fourth of July.” Those are what you would think of as Quiet-Storm Mariah, but you [also] hear it in the stuff that’s more hip-hop like “The Roof.” The way she’s stacking her vocals, the way she’s creating texture with her voice. It’s very Luther. The way she is manipulating her voice, the way she’s showing it off but not for its own sake, but to create an environment that you sort of wrap yourself in. When I think of Luther showcases like “Superstar” or “Forever, for Always, for Love,” it’s very much like some kind of texture that you can wrap yourself.
This is quite different from the approach of the belters of the sixties and seventies, like Aretha or even Gladys or Chaka, powerful singers who really prioritized the belt. Mariah is a phenomenal belter—one of the greatest. Where she really distinguishes herself from other divas of her time is the subtler parts of her voice. I think a lot of that is influenced by Quiet Storm. When it comes to the zanier side of eighties r&b, you hear it in her sense of humor, her effervescence, especially as she became more of a jokester lyrically in her later years. You can sort of hear the lyrical experimentation and the kind of devil-may-care attitude of eighties Black music.
One of my favorite live performances of Carey’s is where she sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “If Only You Knew,” her Patti Labelle homage. I love that era in her voice where there is that level of rasp.
That performance—it’s very eighties Patti. “If Only You Knew” is so eighties. I think Mariah’s samples, too, are so interesting and root her in the time of her youth. She’s such a radio-head, the way she talks about listening to the radio in her memoir and her devotion to soaking up all those sounds. That was before streaming, where you really had to be glued to the radio. I don’t know if she had MTV back in the day, but the radio was the thing. And she wasn’t just listening to r&b. She was listening to Pat Benatar. The range of her musical references is so fascinating.
I’d love to discuss Carey’s gospel moments. You spend a great deal of time on her rendition of Dottie Peoples’ “Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child” and note that while Carey didn’t grow up in the Black church, she joined one as an adult. What’s Mariah’s connection to the gospel of the ’90s? I’m thinking of artists like BeBe and CeCe Winans or Commissioned?
I love gospel music, but I would never claim to know it. I love gospel music because that’s where r&b comes from. R&b is my portal into gospel music. It remains the source of so much great singing, even today. Le’Andria Johnson is one of my favorite singers alive. In terms of Mariah and gospel, I think it is so interesting to me that she didn’t grow up in a Black church and yet was so committed to singing in a gospel style, even from the beginning. There may not be songs that feel explicitly gospel on the debut album, but you do have moments. “There’s Got to Be a Way” has a gospel choir that feels kind of in the style of BeBe and CeCe Winans. That pop, commercial gospel that was happening in the late eighties and nineties—the kind of gospel that you would hear in Sister Act 2. Then she employs background singers like Kelly Price and Melonie Daniels—virtuosos of that sound.
In the book, you note that Kelly Price had been trained by Mattie Moss Clark.
Yes, I found that in a video of Kelly Price. She talked about doing some kind of workshop with Mattie Moss Clark when she was younger. [Carey’s] commitment to surrounding herself with not just skilled r&b background vocalists, who could do a commercial sound, but vocalists like Kelly Price and Melonie Daniels, who could bring a church sound, specifically a COGIC sound to her music is completely fascinating to me. The Clark Sisters were playing on r&b radio back in the seventies. Gospel had been having these kinds of crossover moments, but Mariah’s knowledge of the music surpasses just knowing “Oh, Happy Day” or “You Brought the Sunshine.” She was listening to Vanessa Bell Armstrong. From the very first album in interviews, she is citing Vanessa Bell Armstrong and the Clark Sisters as influences.
I have to think that in her teens, she had been exposed to gospel music. I’m fascinated that she came to the music and absorbed its influence without having a longstanding background in the Black church. I bring this up, not so much as a point about appropriation, but more as another example of Mariah being someone obsessed with records and listening to music and soaking up any influence she could find, whether it was Journey—when she covers “Open Arms”—or gospel or hip-hop or what have you.
To go back to gospel and “Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child,” she has moments where she wears her gospel influence on her sleeve even before that. “Anytime You Need a Friend” was one of the most significant gospel moments; she’s singing with a choir behind her and doing a lot of riffing and running and belting in the way of the great COGIC singers. “Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child” is significant because it sounds live. I read somewhere that it was recorded live in a church. The vamp is unlike anything that had come in her discography before. It is a gesture toward a kind of gospel authenticity. It’s no longer just gospel-pop. It’s going there and trying to recreate the spirit and the atmosphere and the feeling of a live gospel setting.
I’m interested in her study of gospel as an example of her being a constant and abiding student of different forms of Black music. I love her later gospel songs like “Fly like a Bird,” “I Wish You Well,” and “Heavenly” where she combines a James Cleveland song with a Mary Mary song. There is a song called “I Understand” that’s one of those multi-megastar performances. There’s Rance Allen, Kim Burrell, and Mariah does just whistle at the very end.
Do you think Mariah is fundamentally an r&b artist?
We first have to acknowledge that genres are constructs. These terms have historical origins that are usually rooted in marketing and promotion. Most people track [r&b] to the 1940s. It replaced race music as the designation or the category for whatever African Americans listened to that was popular music. It’s a shifting signifier. The idea that there is a commonality between the music of Ray Charles and Lavern Baker and Fats Domino and Mariah and SZA—all these artists sound so different. I think there is something a little bit unhelpful about these genre markers.
That being said, constructs take on their own reality for people who engage with them. For Mariah, and her listeners who gravitate to the r&b side of her catalog, r&b represents something. It’s as different as the music has become over the decades. There are still certain stylistic and sonic continuities. It’s very improvisational. There is melisma, runs. In classical music, you perform it as its notated. Melisma defies notation. You can sing so many notes so fast that you can’t really even transcribe it. It’s rooted in gospel. It’s rooted in a certain passion for delivery, a centrality of the voice and individual expression. An idea about struggle and transcendence, because it’s rooted in the Black experience and an acknowledgement that life is sometimes totally unbearable, and music is a vehicle to help you get over, to get through. People who gravitate to r&b are connecting with that.
Of course, not every r&b song is about that. But even in a slow jam, you can hear that whining, that struggle, that tension. You hear all these elements in Mariah’s discography. For her, r&b became, at a certain point in her life, a way of expressing her Black identity, which had been dismissed or misrepresented or misunderstood. She was constantly asked about her race in interviews, constantly having to remind people of what she had said from the very beginning, that her father was Black and Venezuelan, and her mother was Irish American. Embracing r&b as her heritage was an important part of her owning her identity as a Black woman. R&b is so interesting as a cultural and political marker, because now we’re in an age where white artists like Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake, or whoever, say that they’re r&b. I’m less interested in saying, “This person’s not r&b; this person is,” and more interested in what is it that makes people so desperate to align themselves with this genre. I think it’s the historical lineage—the gravity of the heritage. It’s the connection to the idea of soul, which is a spiritual idea.
I’m not sure if any artist can be definitively anything when it comes to genre. But I think certainly Mariah perceives herself as an r&b artist and has conducted her artistic life in a way that shows that she’s committed to a certain ideal of what r&b is—passionate, soulful singing; a connection to music as a form of spirituality.
“Even in a slow jam, you can hear that whining, that struggle, that tension.”
ANDREW CHAN
You have this part of the book where you’re talking about her covers of power rock anthems. You don’t say that she’s reappropriating, but you say she’s showing how permeable rock and r&b boundaries are. They have a shared origin, and they come together in her choices of what to cover and what to sing and how to sing them and her arrangements.
For sure. If you think about Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” that she covers, that’s an instance of a white band bringing gospel influence into a rock song. These boundaries are always permeable. Rock at one point was called r&b when it was sung by Black artists. What she demonstrates with her music is the variety within r&b and that the music is not a monolith. She’s giving you quiet storm. She’s giving you girl-group songs. She’s giving you New Jack Swing. She’s giving you hip-hop soul. She’s giving you power ballads. She’s giving you deep soul, in the tradition of Aretha with “Mine Again.” She is committed to a vision of herself as an r&b artist, but for her it is many things.
All the things you were saying about the struggle and resilience r&b signifies—I think that’s also reflective of the queerness that many sense in a lot of Mariah’s songs.
Absolutely. One song I want to write about is “Ain’t No Way.” Carolyn Franklin wrote that. I don’t know if we know definitively if she was queer, but I think all the history kind of shows that she was. There’s definitely a [queer] reading of that song. You have Luther as a queer artist and Sylvester, so many of the pioneers of the r&b. Little Richard. It makes sense because gospel was pioneered by queer people. Otherness and survival, the longing for transcendence is something so baked into the music. That’s certainly what I was responding to as a young closeted gay child, who’s experiencing racial otherness in the American South as well. Obviously, my experience is very different from Mariah’s, but I think there’s a longing to transcend the arbitrariness of what oppresses us through sound.
And she does transcend and break through.
She achieves it. What is beautiful about a Mariah Carey ballad is that she takes you into the depths of despair, sorrow, but through the sheer beauty and power and mastery of her voice, she is carrying us over. No matter how sorrowful or despairing it gets—and some of them really are quite dark and fatalistic—there’s something about the voice. The voice can be the vehicle that carries you over.

2024.05.11 06:12 PurpleSpaceSurfer Christina Aguilera's Genie in a Bottle turns 25

25 years ago today, the genie was freed from her lamp for the very first time. Christina Aguilera had gotten her start by singing locally in the Pittsburgh area, before appearing on Star Search in 1990 at the tender age of 9, performing Etta James’ “Sunday Kind of Love”. 3 years later, she won a spot on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, alongside future stars Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Ryan Gosling. Christina appeared on the final 2 seasons of the show before it was canceled.
Shortly thereafter, Christina recorded a series of demos that would later be released without her consent as Just Be Free in 2001. In 1997, she moved to Japan to pursue a singing career, but commercial success evaded her. The following year, Disney was looking for a young singer to perform the pop version of “Reflection” from their upcoming film Mulan. Christina spent hours rehearsing and recording a karaoke version of Whitney Houston’s Run to You. Fitting a required note, she was chosen to record “Reflection”, and soon caught the attention of Ron Fair, an A&R executive from RCA Records. He signed her to the label, and in late 1998 she began recording material for her debut album.
“Genie in a Bottle” was written by David Frank, Steve Kipner and Pamela Sheyne and produced by Frank and Kipner. Frank had gotten his start as a session musician, playing keyboards and synthesizers on hits such as Chaka Khan’s cover of Prince’s “I Feel for You” and Phil Collins’ “Sussudio”. Kipner had already written hit songs, such as Olivia Newton John’s smash “Physical”. Sheyne had gotten her start as a session singer and backing vocalist for numerous artists such as Elton John, Celine Dion, and Cyndi Lauper.
Sheyne said that 3 artists were interested in recording “Genie in a Bottle”: up-and-coming girl group Innosense (who were managed by Lou Pearlman and Justin Timberlake’s mom Lynn Harless, and whom Britney Spears was briefly a member), Paula Abdul surprisingly, and of course Christina. Since most of Christina’s debut album was already recorded, and the other two artists did not have albums ready (Abdul has yet to release a new studio album since 1995), the song was given to Christina and earmarked as the first single.
Released on May 11, 1999, as the lead single from Christina’s self-titled debut album, Genie in a Bottle reached #1 in 21 countries. In the United States, the song peaked at #1 for 5 consecutive weeks starting on July 31st, becoming a song of summer 1999. It is also certified double platinum in the US, for sales and streams of over 2 million units. The song also received positive reviews from critics, who praised the suggestive lyrics and Christina’s vocals. A music video shot in Malibu featuring Christina dancing on a beach received heavy airplay on VH1, BET and TRL.
The success of “Genie in a Bottle” helped propel Christina’s debut album to #1 in its first week on the Billboard 200, selling over 8 million copies in the United States and nearly 15 million worldwide along the way. Christina also earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Genie in a Bottle”. Whilst she lost that award to Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You”, she did score the 2000 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, beating out heavy favorites Macy Gray and her fellow Mousketeer Britney Spears. In her acceptance speech, Christina expressed disbelief that she had won the award, as “Genie in a Bottle” was her only single out in time for that year’s Grammy eligibility period.
“Genie in a Bottle” was voted the 18th best song of 1999 on The Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop Poll, and ranked as the 7th biggest song of 1999 and the 43rd biggest song of the 90s according to Billboard. It also ranked #38th on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s and #228 on Billboard’s 500 Best Pop Songs of All Time list published in 2023. Christina has recorded “Genie” twice: A Spanish version titled “Genio Atrapado” (in English, “Trapped Genie”) for her first Latin album Mi Reflejo, and an electropop remake titled “Genie 2.0” on her greatest hits compilation Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits. Also of note, an unauthorized mashup by The Freelance Hellraiser of Christina’s a capella vocals from “Genie” and the backing track of The Strokes’ “Hard to Explain” was released in the fall of 2001 under the title “A Stroke of Genius”. It received considerable attention online and even some radio airplay. In 2009, The Guardian described the remix as having “defined the decade” as an early example of remix culture.
A quarter century later, “Genie in a Bottle” remains a highwater mark of turn of the millennium-Y2K pop, as well as one of Christina’s signature songs and most enduring hits.

Discussion

  1. Thoughts on “Genie in a Bottle”? Thoughts on the music video?
  2. Were the lyrics too suggestive and mature for Christina and her target audience? Why or why not?
  3. Thoughts on “Genie 2.0”? Was it a successful remake?
  4. Thoughts on “A Stroke of Genius”?
