Oahu marathon

Kay Borleis was running a marathon in 2019 through a dense rainforest of Oahu, Hawaii when a terrifying dark figure lurking in the trees staring directly at her. After doing some digging, she discovered a legend about a group of ghosts inhabiting Hawaii called Nightmarchers. There is a video of it.

2023.12.11 06:10 29r_whipper Cyclist #3 launches himself into a car trying to get two free throws.

There's some activities where you laugh the whole time, cycling is not one of them. That all changed today and I couldn't stop laugh. Here's why: As I was riding down the Ala Wai (one lane road on Oahu) a group of five cyclist got together and were riding in a line. Due to the marathon, the road was nothing short of a cluster, but we made due with what we had, until a Toyota Sienna got a bit too close for cyclist #1's comfort. Cyclist #1 smacked on his window and she yelled, "Watch it! Bike lane." This prompted cyclist #2 to smack on his window as well. THEN, there was cyclist #3. He was on a mid 2000s road bike and had a cooler in his left hand on the drops. I guess cyclist #3 didn't think smacking the glass was enough so he slammed himself and his cooler into the side of the Sienna and damn near jack knifed his bars. He did this despite having a good 3.5-4' of shoulder room. I was cyclist #4 and started laughing and so was cyclist #5. We both managed not to flail ourselves into any vans and continued riding. I haven't stopped laughing all day. The cooler guy did the cycling version of the basketball flop.

2023.12.06 20:38 MikeyNg COVID-19 Update for 12/6/23

503(+195) cases this week. 386 on Oahu, 54 on Maui, 26 on Hawaii Island, and 37 on Kauai.
5(-1) deaths this week, bringing the statewide total to 2,096
DOH's 7-day positivity rate is 4.5%(+0.1%)
Will update hospitalization numbers later (35/3)
31(-4) in the hospital and 3(-) in ICU
Vaccination info: 3,690,540 vaccine doses administered so far. That is 21.8k over the past week (3,668,760), which is considerably higher than the 8.0k the week prior. Health officials say that 79.4%(0%) of the state's population has completed their primary series. Looks like 14.3% (+0.6%) had their booster in the last 12 months. (That seems like quite the jump)
Last 4 weeks of cases: 376, 471, 308, 503
Last 4 weeks' positivity rate: 6.5%, 5.4%, 4.4%, 4.5%
Last 4 weeks' of hospitalization (7-day ave): 48, 36, 35, 31
Last 4 weeks' of ICU usage (7-day ave): 3, 3, 3, 3
Commentary: The relatively large increase is probably due to decreased testing because of Thanksgiving than an actual increase in overall COVID in Hawaii. That's my guess though.
So things seem around normal for the time being, although we should expect to see increases soon simply because of holiday travel, the Honolulu Marathon, and COVID cases increasing on the continental US. Estimates are that the US will peak in late December. We've been a bit of a wildcard lately though.
It's not just COVID that's out there, but there's also the flu and RSV. (And anecdotally some little cold that gives people runny nose and sore throat but only lasts a few days) So get your shots. Yes, the latest booster does help against the JN.1 variant that is rising.
As always, stay safe everybody!

2023.11.22 22:29 MikeyNg COVID-19 Update for 11/22/23

471 (+95) cases this week. 328 on Oahu, 55 on Maui, 43 on Hawaii island, 40 on Kauai, 4 on Molokai, and 1 out of state.
7(+4) deaths this week, bringing the statewide total to 2,085
DOH's 7-day positivity rate is 5.4%(-1.1%)
36(-12) in the hospital and 3(-) in ICU
Vaccination info: 3,662,076 vaccine doses administered so far. That is 8.0k over the past week (3,654,094), which is less than the 10.4k the week prior. Health officials say that 79.3%(0%) of the state's population has completed their primary series. Looks like 13.8% had their booster in the last 12 months.
Last 4 weeks of cases: 667, 632, 376, 471
Last 4 weeks' positivity rate: 9.4%, 8.0%, 7.3%, 6.5%, 5.4%
Last 4 weeks' of hospitalization (7-day ave): 49, 50, 48, 36
Last 4 weeks' of ICU usage (7-day ave): 5, 2, 3, 3
Commentary: Not bad. While cases went up, positivity and hospital visits went down. Things will probably creep up in a few weeks between Thanksgiving, Honolulu Marathon, and holiday travel. But we seem okay for now.
Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving everybody!

2023.11.18 00:07 caramelthiccness Here's a recap of my trip this past week.

We flew hawaiian airlines. The comfort seats were worth it. My husband is 6'3 and he still had about 3 inches of leg room for his knees.
We used thrifty car rental, and I wished I had read the reviews before hand. When I got to the rental counter, I kid you not, there were about 60 people in line. It took an hour of waiting to get my car. When I went downstairs to get it the employees were basically just giving people any car, no matter what size you reserved. They ran out of small midsized. They gave us the option of dodge charger or Chevy spark. I WISH I GOT THE SPARK. It would have been much easier to drive and park everything was so small.
Our Airbnb was beautiful, but the garage was a hassle. Garage had dead ends that you had to carefully back out of if there were no available spaces. People driving in and out of the garage also would cause dead standstill traffic on the street.
We landed at 2:30 friday, but with the car rental, traffic, etc, we got to the airbnb around 5. We went to the American wagyu food truck and went to Kapiolani park beach to eat and watch the fireworks. We then ate dinner at Aloha Melt. This was the best part of the day, they made damn good grilled cheeses. We spent the rest of the night walking around waikiki, which seems more fun at night. To be honest, this first day was awful.
The next day was much better. We went to the Kaka'ako farmers market. I wanted to eat at Little Sparrow, which is a Spätzle fusion place. I think that was my favorite meal in Hawaii. Then we walked around, got Dole whip, and hung out at the beach for a bit. We went to Salt at our Kaka'ako, we had Hanks Haute hot dogs, which were okay. Then we had gelato at 7gradi gelato, which was amazing. The ube and riso flavors were my favorite. From here we drove to Foster's botanical garden. I loved this place. I felt so small next to the giant trees. I really loved it and highly recommend. We drove back to waikiki and walked around a bit, then ate at Topped Waikiki, a bibimbap place. This was my least favorite thing I ate in Hawaii. We stopped at dukes for pastries. The canelle and ube roll were delicious.
Sunday morning we had a circle island tour with go Hawaii tours. This was my least favorite thing we did on the trip. It was mostly sitting on the bus, then having to rush at every place we stopped. We also didn't go to all the places due to a marathon, ect. We weren't able to go to diamond head, or the Makapu‘u lighthouse, we stopped at halona blowhole, stopped at a beach to watch sea turtles, went to a local Macadamia nut farm but they didnt have any coffee to try or purchase, fruit stands, China man's hat, Tanaka shrimp truck, which was flavorless and rubbery, sunset Beach but we couldn't go down toward the water, Dole plantation, which was a total tourist trap, and Byodo Inn which was the only good place we visited. After we walked around waikiki, we ate dinner at Guava Smoked, had boba and Junbi, walked around more before heading home for the night.
Monday, I ate my first acai bowl at Waffle and Berry and I am now hooked. They also had amazing waffles. We went to diamond head to hike up the top and I discovered I love hiking. We were hungry after so went to Cafe Kalia, which had very fresh brunch and breakfast food. Then we went to Manoa falls. This was a beautiful hike through the rainforest. BRING MOSQUITO SPRAY! I forgot mine at the airbnb and didn't wanna pay 15 dollars for one at the gate, so ended up getting eaten alive the first 5 minutes. We reached the falls, but due to the drought Hawaii had been having there wasn't much of a waterfall, but was beautiful nonetheless. The way back I made a turn to go Aihualama trail. THIS WAS NOT FOR NOVICES. We had to turn back because we thought we were gonna get lost in the woods and it was getting dark, but I had so much fun and I felt like an adventurer. We were so done after these 3 hikes. We had walked about 10 miles that day. We ate at pit stop burgers for dinner.
Tuesday we went to Aroma Cafe. I had another acai bowl, which was amazing. Then we had coffee and pastries at Kona Coffee Purveyors. Line was long, but it went quick. I totally get the hype tho. The coffee was super good and so were the pastries. The banana Nutella croissant was incredible. We headed toward Kualoa ranch, but stopped at Ho'omaluhia botanical garden. It was lovely here as well. We did the novice Ebike tour. I LOVED THIS TOUR SO MUCH. Daryl was our guide and our group was small. Only 2 other couples besides us. It was raining and windy, but I had so much fun, he was a great and fun guide, and the views were so beautiful. Then we called ahead and ordered at Adelas country eatery. This was the sweetest lady ever. I got the ube noodles with pork, brisket and green beans, and 2 ube Cheesecake slices. It came out to about $75, but worth it to me. The noodles were delicious and the cheesecake was to die for.
Wednesday we went to the swap meet. It was okay, a lot of stands had similar things, but I got a few nice gifts here for way cheaper than in Waikiki. I forgot to visit Pearl Harbor and didn't realize until the flight home. After the Swap meet we ate at Munch and Brunch, which was very tasty. Then we went to Hanauma Bay. I can't swim, but I saw some fish without snorkeling and the life vest helped a lot. I will have to practice with a snorkel more. I rented one but wasn't able to do it due to my anxiety. I let my husband use it and he saw a lot of fish. Definitely need water shoes for this. I know not to step on the reef but further down there were lots of rocks in toward the shore and I got a lot of cuts. I would Def do this again but try a different part of the beach. We went at 1230, but when we left at 2:30 the beach started getting empty, so I would try a later reservation next time. After this we wanted to do Koko head trail, but it looked way too steep and we were kinda tired. We went to Makapu‘u lighthouse trail instead. THE VIEWS AT THE TOP WERE BREATHTAKING. I seriously think those were the best views on Oahu. Then we walked down to the tidepools. They were beautiful. After, we ate at beastside kitchen. Then I got boba from CowCows tea.
Had my last acai bowl Thursday before heading to the airport. Car rental drop off was much easier. Only took 5 minutes.
I was definitely glad we got a car to get out of waikiki, because it was beautiful. I would skip the circle tour and use Shaka tours and drive around myself. Next time I will get the smallest car possible. I wish I had more time to chill on the beach, and wish I tried more Hawaiin food. I should have carried my umbrella with me.
Things I wish I did, but didn't have time.
North shore area
Yokohama bay
Waimea valley and beach
Koko head trail
Try poke and eat fried fish
Frankies nursery and trying more fruit
Buying hawaiin chocolate
Going to 7/11
Here was the cost for Nov 10-16
Airfare : $1244
Luggage fee : $120
Airbnb : $1496
Car rental : $271
Activities/ tours: $550
Restaurants : $500

2023.11.15 21:30 mh942 Recommendations - solo female, week in Oahu this winter

I am a solo late 20s female and going to be visiting Oahu for the first time this winter. I'm trying to keep the trip relatively budget friendly as I have a lot of other travel leading up to this trip and on the horizon. I am staying half the trip in Waikiki (Shoreline - $390 for 2 nights, can't beat this price so far) and the other half in Ko'Olina (at Aulani on timeshare points). Mainly looking for recommendations of places to visit that aren't super crowded tourist traps (i.e., Dole Plantation and Polynesian CC - unless you really think those are worth seeing).
-The only attraction I'm certain I want to visit is Pearl Harbor / USS Arizona (I know this is a tourist hotspot but I teach a college course that uses FDR's PH address for one of its major assignments so it feels necessary). I've looked into the ticket system and some tours on Viator so I have a general idea of the need for a reservation/ticket.
-I'm not looking to be super active, as I am doing a half marathon the day before I fly to HI (I'll be in CA the week before). If this wasn't a factor I would want to do Diamond Head, but don't think it's the smartest idea this trip. I don't know how to surf but I'm open to trying a (very) beginner lesson or watching others surf.
-I'm open to something besides the Shoreline if the price is similar. I've tried to shop around and Shoreline is the winner in terms of price (plus has a decent location and respectable TripAdvisor rating). Personal comfort level, I am not open to Airbnb/VRBO or hostels.
Any recommendations would be appreciated - attractions to see, good places to eat (both quality of food and deals like happy hours), etc. Thank you!
ETA: Now considering renting a car based on suggestions - initially mentioned in list I wasn't planning on car.

2023.11.15 00:44 bigdyllystyle Non-tourist trap destinations!

Hi friends! I’m going to be visiting Oahu from Minnesota this coming December to run the Honolulu Marathon! I’ve been to Oahu once before, but I felt like everywhere we went was a tourist trap. Could you guys give me some good recommendations for destinations and restaurants during my stay! Thanks so much ☺️

2023.10.13 15:09 brwalkernc It's Photo Friday - let's see your running pictures!

Last time, on Photo Friday:

Left_Gene_7065 grabbed the first runner-up spot.
MV Matthew docked at Cobh, Co Cork. This ship was intercepted in the Irish Sea the week prior, leading to Ireland’s largest cocaine seizure (€157m). Cobh was the last call of the Titanic before she set sail across the Atlantic, and plays host to many cruise ships today. Historically this part of the port of Cork was surrounded on both sides of the channel by the palatial houses of the merchant princes, watching the comings and goings of their stock and cargo. Much of the meat and timber for what was the British Empire at the time sailed out of these waters, leaving behind the scraps for what has become Cork’s traditional dinner of Tripe and Drisheen (stomach and innards boiled in milk, with seasoning)

2023.09.20 20:46 RunForestRun28 Oahu Marathon Training

I’m going out to Oahu in October and I’m training for the NYC Marathon in November. That said, I need to do a 16-17 mile long run. Can anyone recommend where I can run this where it’s mostly road, I won’t get hit by cars, and isn’t an elevated hike. I don’t need for it to be totally flat, but a good stretch. Rolling hills and slight incline is okay. I’m staying in Waikiki but I’ll have a car. Thanks in advanced!!!

I’m visiting Oahu next month in the thick of my marathon training. I’m staying at Queen Kapiolani and looking for some routes or loops to run 15 or so miles. I don’t mind doing some miles on the treadmill but I’d really love to do most of my running outside. I will not have access to a car. Thanks in advance!

2023.09.07 20:00 DTG_Bot This Week in Destiny - 09/07/2023

Source: https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/Article/twid_9_7
Moin moin [Hello in German], Guardians! I gotta say, what World First Race. Fireteams from across the world competed at the highest level and, in the end, it came down to a photo finish between two of the best teams around. I couldn´t believe what I saw and how close the race was. I want to say props to all of you who have encountered Crota´s End in Contest Mode because it was huge challenge—and I know that from experience, too! Before we get to today's TWID fun, let's have a look what we discussed last week and what we’re talking about this week.
Last week in Destiny:
  • Crota’s End raid and Bungie Rewards.
  • Iron Banner dates.
  • Turtle power.
  • Cabbage patch.
  • But what about Stasis?
  • Prime Gaming update.
Topics for this week:
  • Final call for the Guardians for Maui Fundraiser.
  • Update from our PvP Strike Team.
  • Show us those Tessellation clips!
  • New ritual armor sets.
  • World First Race winner interview.
  • Player Support Report.
  • #Destiny2MOTW and #Destiny2AOTW picks. ###Guardians for Maui – four days left
Just a few weeks ago, one of the deadliest U.S. wildfires of the past century devasted communities across Maui. Guardians from around the globe responded immediately with their support via the Bungie Foundation’s Guardians for Maui fundraising campaign. To ensure that the funds raised have immediate impact, the campaign will close at 11:59 PM PT on this Sunday, September 10.

All profits from the Mālama Maui T-shirt and Kūlike Kākou emblem will go to our partner Direct Relief and their recovery efforts already underway. Don’t miss out on your chance to own these two specially designed items, made in collaboration with Asians@Bungie and a local artist from Oahu, while lending your support to the people of Maui.

PVP Strike Team

Image Linkimgur
In case you missed it, Destiny 2’s fearless Game Director Joe Blackburn recently announced some exciting PVP news in a video a few weeks ago. During the video, Joe detailed the ongoing work of the D2 PVP Strike team which, in addition to other improvements, will be creating a brand new map pack coming next year. This team’s goal is to make Destiny 2 PVP experiences more fun for players who enjoy facing off against other Guardians in glorious combat. Our objective is not to increase player numbers by forcing players who don’t enjoy these activities to feel obligated to play them. Instead, we want to create fun experiences that entice players who have shied away from Shaxx’s calling to dip their toe in. The team has a few changes coming up in the short term and are also working on long-term plans for what other improvements we can make. For example, in today’s update we added a high chance for non-Adept Trials weapons to drop from any Trials match wins.
Our PVP Strike Team wants your input, too! We’ve collected a lot of feedback so far, and we wanted to give you all another opportunity to share your freshest ideas on how you would like to see PvP continue to improve. As a specific example of feedback that would be very helpful for us: What game modes or rulesets would you be interested in seeing in the Competitive playlist? We’ve set up some collection posts on our Bungie.net forums, Reddit, and Twitter. We value your input as we start to put together additional changes going forward, in addition to what we already have planned.
Right now, the new Relic game mode is live in the lab for testing.Another new modifier for multiple modes, Checkmate, is starting up on September 19. These mode tests in Crucible Labs are going to help us evaluate the success of these modes and how they might fit into other playlists in the future.
Speaking of other playlists, one thing we are currently working on is a complete restructuring of our current playlists to create clearer identities and purposes for each playlist. We are looking at everything from which modes and maps are in each playlist and matchmaking tuning to lobby balancing and rotation details.
In addition to the playlists themselves, the PVP Strike Team will be focused on many of the things that touch our Crucible experience, including sandbox balance, spawn issues, rewards, and the addition of quality-of-life features. As we start to solidify more of our plans, we will share details along the way. Until then, please go share your feedback!

New ritual armor set

A couple weeks ago we mentioned that we would be adding a new ritual armor set in Destiny 2 this Season. Today is the day that the following armor sets can be earned as new ritual rewards!

Last weekend thousands of Guardians entered the World First Race and tried to be the first to beat Crota´s End and claim the raid belt. But there can only be one, and it was a photo finish. A lot of teams reached Crota, but the son of Oryx wasn´t going to give up easily. The first team who reached Crota was the Clan Elysium. It all looked like an easy win once more, but Crota had other ideas. Elysium tried and tried, but Crota did not fall. Finally, after 5 hours and 51 minutes, Crota was defeated, earning Elysium their fourth raid belt. Seriously, what an incredible achievement! Congratulations!
After the race, we reached out to the winning team and wanted to know how it felt to be four-time champs.
Congrats on your fourth win! How does it feel to win the Destiny 2 World First Race not one, not two, not three, but four times?
Saltagreppo: Very, very good. The moment you kill the final boss while thinking of being the winner and everyone pops off is always awesome. At times, it’s almost hard to recognize how crazy what we did is. I find myself thinking: Damn, we really won so many times? And thinking about that makes me proud of us.
What kind of preparation goes into getting your team raid ready? Clearly you all have something special with so many wins under that shiny raid belt!
Moople: I think simply being around everyone once the race gets closer is what really prepares me, mostly mentally. If we didn't have such a mutual desire to keep going for our wins, I don't think we'd be where we are. I think that’s the special string that runs between all of us, the fact that we are all so very sure that we are capable of doing it again and again.
Has your goals for winning WFR changed through the years? Do you see yourselves stopping any time soon?
Saltagreppo: No, competing and possibly winning doesn’t get old. Day-one raids are and will remain the main reason why I love and play Destiny, and no other game offers anything similar. I definitely don’t plan on stopping and really hope there are other raids planned for after The Final Shape.
Kyros: At first, my goal was to complete a day-one raid because I never completed one for Crown or Garden. Then I placed second in Deep Stone Crypt. After getting second, I knew first was definitely possible, and I wanted to get first. I don't intend on stopping anytime soon. I'll keep placing the best I can.
What's the highlight for you and your team when winning something like this? Any pitfalls?
Moople: More than anything the highlight will always be the winning pop offs. I really exploded this time around, but that aside, it's always the pop offs for any races, even the races we don't win. Nothing brings a bigger smile than hearing that pure excitement and happiness from anyone.
Cruz: The moment we finish is just... everything. It summarizes the entire feat in one singular moment of pure energy.
What's your one tip to WFR attempters to help them pursue their own goals of one day taking home that belt?
VileFate: My one tip to others trying to go for World First is always to make sure you’re playing with people you are good friends with and who have similar goals. If you listen to our World First clears, you’ll definitely hear us yelling at each other, but no one on the team takes these personally since we all know we have each other's best interests in mind. Since we’re all very close friends, nothing is taken personally and we continue focusing on the race. In my opinion, playing with people who you can have this dynamic with is very important when competing in any competition. In addition to this, always remember that the main point of these races is to have fun. This is something that only comes around twice a year, so you have to remember to enjoy yourself, even if some parts of it may be frustrating.
What was your favorite moment from the reprisal of Crota's End? Did the challenge satisfy that urge for an earned clear?
Moople: The recreation of Deathsinger is probably my favorite. It's a fantastic fit for Crota's End and keeps the pace going. I think I have a soft spot for the fully recreated encounters (like the Gatekeepers from Vault of Glass) in the reprised raids. The difficulty of this raid was so much more in line with what I want from races, in terms of encounter design, making sure everyone has to pay attention on some level, and the mechanics in tandem with the combat difficulty forcing that feeling of everyone needing to be involved.
Kyros: My favorite part of the raid was being the only person with a sword versus all the gatekeepers at the end of the Normal Mode bridge. Everyone was just yelling at me to keep going, and I'm just laughing as I'm defeating the gatekeepers one by one.
What was the hardest part of the raid for you and your team? Most frustrating, most rewarding?
Quazz: I'd say the hardest part was the bridge challenge. We took quite a long time to figure it out, and I believe we should have picked up on it sooner. By far the most frustrating part was us failing two final stands against Crota on Challenge Mode that I believe we should have been able to beat, which nearly cost us the race. And winning is the most rewarding.
Cruz: I would say the most difficult part was either figuring out the bridge challenge or finishing off Crota during his final stand on the Challenge Mode run as well. Both were frustrating, as I believe we should've solved the challenge on bridge quicker than we did, and both wipes on Crota's final stand had some bad luck to it. I'd say the most rewarding was completing the Challenge Mode run without losing the lead as it's, in my opinion, the toughest aspect of winning a reprised day-one raid.
Any final thoughts as you await the fourth belt to join that impressive collector's shelf?
Saltagreppo: Thanks to everyone on my team for allowing me to live this awesome journey, love you guys! And thanks, Bungie, for continuing to make the game we all love! After seeing this reprisal, I’m very excited for The Final Shape and looking forward to what you guys have in store!
Moople: Above all, a massive thank you to my team and to Bungie for putting the raids in the position they are. I went from never racing to now feeling like I can't experience these races without the mindset I have now. Here's to The Final Shape and finally taking on the Witness. ❤
And that’s a wrap on the latest sit-down with the World First crew. Massive congrats again, including to all of those teams that got out there and made the race for first.

And the winner is.....

And that’s a wrap on the latest sit-down with the World First crew. Massive congrats again, including to all of those teams that got out there and made the race for first.

2023.08.30 22:19 breadxgoat Jennie lake trail- Jennie Lakes Wilderness CA questions

I am planning my first backpacking trip, which I will likely have my gear ready by October. I would like to plan a 2 day (1 night) backpacking trip on the Jennie Lake Trail in late October for my first backpacking trip. It’s supposed to be about 17 miles and 3k elevation.
I’m a regular gym go-er (3x a week weight training at a intermediate level) and I’m currently training for a half marathon (at which I could run 5/6 miles straight so far without issues). Does this trail seem to be do-able at my current fitness levels? I plan on doing more hikes here soon as well to put more mileage on me. I’d say the hardest hikes I have completed are upper falls at Yosemite and Koko head in Oahu.
Also, does anyone know what the weather would be like in late October? I heard it gets cold at night? I think my current sleeping arrangements are only for 35+ degrees, so any recommendations on good sleeping bags for below 20 degrees?
Any tips for beginners are welcome. :)
Thank you!

Training – First marathon for me, mistakes were made. I’ve run for fun and for exercise for several years now. At one point I was building up for an Ultra (50 miler) but never quite got there due to injuries. My brother was planning to do the St. Jude’s and asked if I’d like to join. I’ve got some social anxiety and don’t like running in crowds, but I agreed and we also invited our other brother. None of us had run a marathon before, but we all had at least some endurance training for different reasons. I run at a faster pace than they do so we decided I’d run my own pace and they’d run it together. I had a base of around 40 miles per week during the previous year or so. Planned to do a 16 week workup with peak of 68 miles/week, but had a bit of a brain malfunction and miscalculated the time left to the marathon. Went on a 3 week vacation where I didn’t run at all and when I came back only had 12 weeks to the race. What to do? Well you just sort of wing it right? I skipped the first month of the plan and built up very quickly, ignoring the 10% rule. Felt alright all the way up to and including the first 68 mile week. The next week though I felt a pain in the right knee during one of the shorter runs. Kept with it but the pain got worse until one run I just walked the last 4 miles. Did not get it checked, diagnosed myself with runners knee with a remedy of not running for a while. Called my bros and told them I might be out, but I’d see if I could recover in time. Had about 8 weeks left. For the next 4 weeks I just biked and walked, until near the end when I started with short runs to see if the knee was alright. Knee felt ok. Spent the remaining 4 weeks building up to a 20 miler (but keeping the weekly miles a bit lower than I’d like) which I was able to do, then tapered until race day. Knee wasn’t giving me trouble, but I was definitely worried it would blow up during the race. All this training was in the Southeastern US and it was hot and humid the whole time. I had no real tempo runs or anything. One 15 miler when it was just a bit cooler I was able to maintain an 8 min mile for most of it, so I figured that might be the best pace to try for the race.

Pre-race – Picked up packet the day before. Was put in Corral A. Could that be right? When signing up I had guessed a 3:30 time and that put me in the front? Anxiety crept in and I thought I’d made a mistake. Visions of people blowing past me on race day danced in my head. Nothing to do about that now, I figured I’d just line up in the back of the corral and do my best to stay out of the way. Brothers were in Corrals J&K.

Race day, woke up at 3am. Coffee, bagel with jam. To make sure we got OK parking we headed out early but found parking pretty easily within a mile of the start. Walked to the starting area, found the port-o-potties. Temperature was perfect, but some gusty wind. Could have been much worse, it rained the day before and the day after. Did a quick warmup with some stretches. Split up from the bros and headed to corral A and stood in the back about 45 min prior to race start. Anxiety rising again, everyone looks really fit. No one is wearing Mizzuno shoes that I can see. Some more stretching and deep breaths, tried to keep calm, pulse was slowly rising. Just need to think of it as a regular run, no big deal, you like running, what’s the worst that can happen? Oh right, people running over me at the start, my knee blowing out, my pants falling down, a heart attack. 5 min to start. Remembered to take a couple of Bloks. Planned to start at a pace that I felt I could maintain for at least 20 miles, just run by feel, don’t even look at the watch until at least mile 6.

Miles 1 – 7: race starts and I immediately feel much better, just good to get moving. Lots of people around though and I don’t much like running near other people (heh). Oh well, just try to focus on breathing and look around at the funny signs and the folks on the sidelines cheering us on. So much energy out there, really an awesome crowd and awesome feeling. What was I so worried about? People are not passing me, I’m passing people. Was I running too fast? I felt ok, so guessed I’d keep it up. First hydration stop, grab a cup of Gatorade and try to drink while running. Half of the Gatorade splashes on my face and shirt. Guess I’ll need to drink more at the next one. Is that a table with shots of whisky? Is that another one with beer? Next hydration stop grab a cup of water by the top and try to pinch most of the top closed, a little trick a friend told me that I’d totally forgotten about. Try to drink water from the bottom hole and it comes out the top hole and half the water is on my face and shirt. A little went up my nose somehow and it feels like I just dove in a pool. Oh well, at least it washed away some of the Gatorade. From now on, I will stop and walk to drink. It’s mile 7 already! Where did the miles go? Check the watch and I’m running under a 7:20/mile pace. Wow! I feel great, guess I’ll keep it up, hope I don’t blow up at mile 20. Eat another Blok and some sour patch kids. There are some very small hills and quite a bit of wind. Hard to maintain a steady pace.

Miles 8-14 – Mostly a blur. One time I stopped to drink and someone nearly crashed into me. Need to grab a cup and move out of the way. Somewhere in here the half marathoners peeled off and it opened up a whole lot. That was nice, my mind could settle down a bit. Mile 11, take another Blok and more sour patch kids. Around mile 13 we start on the first of two 4-mile loops through a park area. Someone is handing out bottles of water and I grab one. I can finally run and drink without stopping for a while. Stops are easy at first, but they seem to be getting tougher as the miles are building up. I should try to figure out how to deal with that for the next one. Legs are still feeling strong. More Blok and sour patch kids at mile 14.

Miles 15 – 20 – Guy flies past me at mile 15. Where the hell did he come from? Was he stuck in a port-o-pottie at the start? Ohhhh, no, he’s on the second lap already. This dude is 4 miles ahead of me. That’s a little demoralizing, but I should have expected it. Just keep it up, things are going pretty well. Around mile 17 I start the 2nd loop and meet up with all the people who are 4 miles behind me. See, I’m doing pretty good. It’s a bit tougher now weaving around people but it’s still pretty clear. Legs are starting to get a little tired, but still feel pretty good. Force myself to swallow the last Blok and sour patch kids at mile 20. I’m feeling sick to my stomach with all this sugar. Spirits are high though, I’m almost done, right?

Miles 21 – 26 – at around mile 21 we’re heading back towards the start/finish and there are marathoners coming in for the first of the loops. I calculated our paces and figured there was the slimmest of chances I could see my bros at that stretch. I looked for them but, alas, they were too fast and had already run though (later they said they were tracking me and saw it wouldn’t work out). I notice my pace is creeping up a bit. Still have a bit left in the tank I think, so I’ll try a little harder and maybe I can maintain pace. Next mile I feel worse, and pace is worse. Uh oh, is this the blow up? Just gotta try to run this thing out, no walking except to drink. Mile 23, breathing is getting really heavy. It’s almost over, pace nearly 7:50 now. Gotta hold on. Barely able to maintain 7:50 pace for miles 24 and 25. One more mile to go. So close. Mile 25.5, there’s the smallest, tiniest, cute little hill. I’m dying. Can’t stop though, no walking. Who put lead weights in my shoes? Made it to the top, I can see the finish and it’s Glorious!! Slight downhill to the finish. I’m running near two people, should I try to pass them right at the end? Would that be considered rude? No, this is a race, you’re supposed to try to pass people. I sprint out the last couple hundred meters and pass them both. Was there a camera I was supposed to be looking at?

Post Race – legs made it, no knee pain, no cramps! Under 3:15. Wow! That’s much better than I was expecting. Can’t believe I was able to maintain that kind of pace, especially the way the training panned out. Proud of myself. So glad my brother talked me into it. People handing out blankets, passed them up, don’t need that I’m hot. Still a little sick to my stomach. Walk into the baseball stadium area where there’s drinks and food. Drink a coke, that calms the stomach a bit. Get some soup. Get some more soup. Soup is a great idea! Stomach feeling better, I think maybe I can drink my 2 free beers. I drink one and have to toss the other, stomach not feeling good anymore. Was planning to hang out in the stadium, but figure my bros are about 2 hours behind me. I should go get my phone from the car so I can track them. Head back to the parking lot and it’s cold. Very, very cold. Turning down the blanket was a bad idea. Good thing I brought a fleece in the car. Warm up in the car and remember we locked my phone in a safe and I don’t have the key, so I can’t track my bros. Call my wife using my watch and ask her to track my bros and text me updates on their progress while I warm up. When they get close I head back to the stadium to greet them when they come through. We all finished! Pretty damn proud of them. They didn’t even try the free beer; stomachs are a mess. We hang out for a bit then head home. Brother has good beer on tap anyway and our stomachs clears up by the time we get back. What’s next – nothing for a while. Glad to be back running for fun. A friend told me I’d run a BQ for my age! Holy crap! I thought a BQ was always under 3 hours or something. Thought about signing up for the BQ but clearly I know nothing about it. It’s only open for a short period and we’re already past the time for 2023. Maybe I can sign up for 2024? Checked the times for the last Boston Marathon and I’d be something like 2500th with my time. Brother wants to do the next Oahu marathon. Maybe. That does seem more my speed.
