My partner and I have been together for over eight years. We are both 30.
We were initially supposed to get married back in 2020, but with the pandemic and all, we postponed it and life happened. I ended up focusing more on my career and wanted to save more money. My fiancé had three long term jobs in between, and then two seasonal jobs more recently. At first my dad constantly vocalized how he could do so much better because he does find him to be very smart and capable. My fiancé on the other hand doesn't care about going to school, not even for a trade. He's more on the artistic side of things and is more somebody who will get whatever job and try to do his creative stuff on the side. The other issue is how he didn't have a license, but he has worked up to that despite not having a car of his own (can't afford insurance right now which is understandable)
I understand where they are both coming from and I've tried to reason with them both for so long. At this point I am desensitized but a part of me just wants nothing to do with either of them. No matter how much I try to put up a boundary with my father I'll get a lecture once a month, or every other month, about how I shouldn't give my time to someone who doesn't have a stable job. When I talk to my fiancé about this we've come to the conclusion that even when he did have his previous jobs and moved up in management, my father still complained and regardless of it all, my dad will have something to complain about. I also find that the "internet" or the traditional way of things is what tends to convince my mind that my fiancé is supposed to do more. This whole "your partner should never go 50/50, you deserve to be treated like a princess, etc" can cloud my judgment over my fiancé a bit. Obviously it would be nice if he is the one that can pick me up and take us places sometimes, or have him cover the bill because he does have a job and can afford to do so.
Right now he got laid off and has been applying for jobs ever since with constant rejections, assuming because of the job market. I hope this is a lesson for him to start taking things into more consideration when stuff like this happens, but I also know that this is a man who doesn't like Western culture, doesn't really care about how much money he brings to the table or what kind of job he gets. My fiancé CAN work hard, but doesn't have the hustle mentality. My man wants a career doing what he loves, not the typical 9-5 career, but he understand that he needs money to survive.
Yes, I am admitting it would be easier if he saw things in a slightly more different lens, but it isn't who he is and I am no longer trying to worry about a grown man. I am over here still trying to work on myself and get into Nursing school. That will be the main thing I'll be thinking about and nothing else. I literally can't pour my energy into this but here I am, stressed and angry because I am over this back and forth. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this and have any advice for me?

I took the SAT and ACT my junior year of high school as many students do. Back then,I didn't really care for school and the school I attended really didn't teach us much, it was just about the image with that school -- come to school in full uniform and be on time, that's all that mattered.
We were SO behind academically... a huge learning gap between us an public schools. This didn't become evident until years later. A student who was the top of our graduating class did her field placement at my current place of employment and my colleagues tell me now that they kind of looked at the student teacher and wondered how they had mad it this far. like the learning gap was SOOOOO big!
Anyways, where I work now we talk to kids about SAT's and ACT's as well as college. I got curious and was like "I wonder what my SAT scores were 8-ish years ago". Called ColleBoard, found out how to get access to my scores, no problem. I scrolled down and saw that out of a possible 1600.... I scored a 910. OUT OF A POSSIBLE SIXTEEN HUNDRED.... I SCORED... A NINE HUNDRED AND TEN. Never looked at them after I took them and never retook them. When I applied to schools, I got the scores sent for free straight from CollegeBoard to the schools.
Full circle moment, though... I am currently at my top pick school (got accepted junior year of hs with my 910 score but we couldn't afford it at the time) with a 3.85 pga going into my senior year in a dual BSW/MSW program. Wow

My ex and I have had an on/off relationship since we broke up in 2022. We’ve tried working things out over the years and they’ll be good for awhile but ultimately ends in with us going our separate ways but still remaining good friends.
Recently she’s been seeing a dude who I’ve met several times now and we’ve all gone out together and there relationship has started to grow. As much as it sucks to see it unfold in front of my eyes, it’s also a weight off my shoulders. I can break free from the thought that maybe one day we’ll work out our differences and be together again because I’ve now been replaced with someone who has buried that dream. For good.
It’s surprisingly enjoyable to see her light up about someone new though. The way she’ll talk about him reminds me of how we would talk in those first stages of dating. The new and exciting part of wanting to spend time with someone type feelings.
I’m definitely sad about it but at the same time happy for her. Sad because our friendship will be at a distance now but happy that she has someone else that makes her feel special again and lights up her day.
We haven’t really spoken about it bc there’s really not much to discuss but I’m going to go ahead and take the first step in distancing myself and respect that she has moved on with someone new. It’s only going to hurt me in the long run if I try and stick around as friend.
Maybe this is what needed to happen to finally let go and try to find my someone new. I wish them the best honestly and I hope they can build a loving relationship together. Just like I will someday when I meet someone new.
So here’s to letting go and closing this chapter.

I was thinking about how this show is all about perspective. Bear with me cause I probably won’t get everything accurate here but hopefully the gist will make sense. Ruby talks about the elephant being the strongest animal but is tied down with chains staked into the ground. It could pull up the stakes but doesn’t because of how it sees itself, it doesn’t believe it’s strong. The whole idea is the perspective of the one inside the chains. At the beginning Ruby thinks she’s being chained by those at Maxton and so she says she won’t let anyone else keep her staked down. By the end of the series though she says she’s realized she was keeping herself chained there and had to break free from her own limitations. She says that’s true of others too, meaning James. I think that perspective really comes into play with him.
When he and Ruby first interact he comes at everything with the perspective of him being “James Beaufort”, this well-liked, super athlete, son of the school’s wealthiest contributor. She’s some nobody who he expects to fall at his feet. When she doesn’t it throws him off because that’s not the perspective he’s used to. Now we won’t go into whether this is realistic or not because in truth most of these bad guy goes good for the good girl stories are not realistic but that’s not the point. The point here is we like characters that broaden their perspectives when presented with a worldview that’s different from theirs. Characters that change as they’re presented with the opportunity to. That’s James. When Ruby doesn’t cave over and over to James and she presents him with the reality of how he comes across and the pretentious, hollowness of his life when they fight during the prep class, he’s forced to decide if he wants to keep seeing things only from his perspective or through someone else’s eyes. The best example of that was the pool scene.
That was the best sequence in the series but for me it’s not just because of Ruby’s vulnerability or James’s protectiveness. It’s also because it’s when James realizes that Ruby was right about the world he’s been living in. She told him she didn’t want to go to the party because that’s not her world but she went because she wanted to be with James. Him having to see her in that environment, from getting the drink thrown on her, to being tossed in the pool and his friends reactions I think shifted James perspective to seeing his world how Ruby sees it. Judgmental, frightening and shallow. He couldn’t go back to seeing it the way he had before, as fun parties with his friends without being emotionally devoid.
After that I think is why we see James questioning a lot with who he is and everything related to his father, his place in Beaufort and his place among his friends. His perspective changed. He could no longer look at that world the same after seeing it from another person’s point of view. I know it’s just a show but I think it’s fun to see what we can get out of it and for me the whole elephant metaphor was pointing in that direction. Both James and Ruby realizing that it wasn’t their worlds keeping them staked to the ground but themselves and needing to see things from different perspectives. Once James was able to free himself from only seeing things from his father’s manipulative, power means control perspective, it freed him up to dream of a different life and if we get a season 2 I’ll be curious where it goes.

We live in the middle of nowhere. The closest town has a No Frills, Shoppers and Foodland. So No Frills has been our go to for the last 8 years.
I started boycotting early, after they pissed me off with a points offer not received, due to an error at checkout- cashier advised to reach out to customer support because there was nothing they could do. So I did. And they basically told me to kick rocks. That’s when I decided I was done, and consciously started avoiding our No Frills and Shoppers.
Even with the cost of gas- we are saving money each month by visiting other stores, or utilizing online grocery orders. For the most part- we’ve been shopping exclusively at Costco- and doing Walmart deliveries.
I know all the big guys are bad— and this is just the first step, to what I hope is some seriously needed changes. But if you live rurally like me— check to see if Walmart grocery delivery is available in your area. They have THE best grocery/pickup I have ever experienced. Things are fresh. Fresher than what I could pick up in store. If they are out of stock of something- they will replace with your choice- and eat the cost. No extra charges to you. $8.97/month for unlimited delivery (annual is $89/year) you can also get 30 days free to test it out- no commitment.
I know it’s not available everywhere- it’s fairly new to our area- thank goodness though! It’s made a world of difference.

now i sit here getting congratulated by my family for sticking up for the bully…when i still love the bully. i would still go back and run to you. if you flew in showed up to my house i wouldn’t say anything but just to hug you tight. i wanted to have an honest and open conversation and good closure of what our future has to come. because i know the situation is messy. but id rather save up money and run away with you anywhere. even if you didn’t fly to me, id want you to tell me how much i mean to me and apologize for you causing me so much pain. that’s all you’ll ever have to do and we’ll work on us.

I think of myself a pretty smart person. At one time I got into crypto pretty deep and lost my butt, I bought and sold stocks for many years, but when you open up and look at things such as options, I am for the most part lost and everyone around me has no idea what I’m talking about. I am more advanced than they are, I would say I’m an average citizen and as a average citizen, I am not given the tools. I have a hard time getting the tools needed to play fairly.
