2024.05.16 19:20 dfaire3320 Hey SoD Devs...you know you want to do this! you KNOW you want to do this!!!!

Yet another Raid Idea....
A low level instance. Could you imagine discovering a new chasm somewhere in Wailing Caverns where there's a new load of creatures that have never seen the light of day. so much stronger than anything you've ever gone up against.
The Serpent Lords were only the gatekeepers. Minions compared to what was waiting ahead. Bigger Dino's and Oozes with crazy new abilities.
Mutanis, Kresh, Skum, Verdan, even the Deviate Fairy Dragon. All youngsters who just went out wandering the caves and got lost Land Before Time style...And their Parents are much bigger and angrier.
At the back of the Cavern, there is a huge sparkling pool of life where these creatures got their energy from. A HUGE Octopus type boss comes out. and you have to split into groups to make sure each tentacle dies at the same time all while 2 or 3 tanks rotate holding aggro on the body.
And at the end...when you think its all over, There is a body of an old adventurer on a Pyre, you awaken him and defeat him...but each raid reset, he is a random class (Mage, Warrior, paladin, Hunter...etc.) with abilities that match that class type. and you must defeat him. BUT YOU DONT KNOW WHAT CLASS HE IS UNTIL PHASE 2. where you think you defeated his frail ass and he falls into the water and reawakens into his younger self. and the Epic weapon he Drops is always that coinciding classes BIS weapon and a random epic manual of another class that was too difficult for him to learn, teaching an all new spell or ability.
For example. the Warrior boss drops either a massive 2h weapon or a 1h/shield combo and a Warlock Manual that a warlock can use to add a new summon spell for an all new demon pet. Or maybe a new hunter shot that can momentarily leech or net a mob.
....yeah, thats what it should be.
In exchange of Blizz using this idea and raking in the millions upon millions of dollars. They can just name the last boss after me. make an opening cinematic in his (my) image, give me a free wow sub for life, and make a blizz shop pet Octopus that slithers behind you and donate a portion of each sale to Jack and Jill Foundation for Children with parents with cancer....Oh. and a mount that only I will ever have!!!!!! (thats not too much to ask, right?)...all negotiable of course.

2024.05.16 19:11 doppelganger3301 Starting at the End

I’m about to start Tomb of Annihilation next week and I’m excited for my plan and thought I’d share.
I’ve asked my players to create 2 characters each, one at level 9 and one at level 0. The level 0s are inspired by their corresponding 9s, some positively, some negatively. The characters may be related, it may just be someone they look up to, it may be a lover, or someone they hate and swear to be better than. The level 9s will also get a cool magic item.
Our first session will start far underground at the very core of the Tomb with a team of level 9 adventurers as they confront Acererak. He’s going to wipe the floor with them, it’s a scripted loss (and I may buff his stats to ensure this happens). He’ll never be properly named, they’ll just know they’re fighting a powerful lich.
Then we move to a funeral that Syndra has arranged at personal cost for the adventurers. For various reasons, the level 0s are there (some as family, some just passing through, etc). After the funeral, a group of undead rises and attacks the civilians and the level 0s are forced to try and defend them. Each level 0 will level up to 1 during this fight (the warlock may have a fiend arise and make a deal with him, the paladin may take an oath, etc). There will be a moment for each to go from being a passive commoner to an actual level one in their class, whatever that means for them.
Then, syndra will pull them aside, impressed by their boldness, and asks if they would consider going to Chult. This way, the players have a motivation to avenge their fallen heroes and when they get back to the Tomb they can find their lost magic items that I gave the 9s.
Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

2024.05.16 17:09 TandrDregn And just like that, the first encounter of #IntoTheDepths comes to an end, the Inquisition patrol being defeated with an epic final showdown between Prince Craiven and Captain Hierlock (This is basically just a slightly edited copy+paste of the RP me and u/Sleep_eeSheep did)

Captain Hierlock eyed Craiven. As young as the prince was, he WAS an impressive leader.

Hierlock:”Shame you’re a traitor, kid. You could have been a lot of help to the kingdom. Instead, you caused Morrion to burn.”

He charged, hammer high. Craiven, seeing the Captain's charge, quickly swung his lantern to the side. Bracing himself, he narrowly managed to cast a shield spell.

Craiven:"The Andricari are the ones responsible, captain! We are only trying to help get as many people out of there as possible."

The captain roared.

Hierlock:”Nobody would have gone to Morrion if you hadn’t made camp near it in the first place! That is all you rebels do! Hide in cities and towns, hoping the civilians will serve as meat shields!”

Hierlock swung his hammer sideways, going for Craiven’s head. Just as Craiven manages to duck, the hammer narrowly missing his head frill by an inch, he keeps trying to reason with the captain.

Craiven:"That is not why we came here. We came here to free Morrion, not see it razed to the ground!"

The captain charged forward with his shield, the glowing blade protruding from it aimed at Craiven’s torso.

Hierlock:”Oh really, free it from who? Morrion was fine until you treacherous fucks came along!”

Dodging just an inch to the captain's right, the Prince used this chance to grab a shield from off the ground.

Craiven:"From Acidor! He is using you, just as he is using the royalists! Think of it, Captain! If we sought to harm the people of Morrion, why would we have come this way? Why would we have fought alongside your home's leader in Morrion's hour of need?"

Hierlock:”Acidor? Using us? He’s just not on the priority list yet.”

Curiously, the captain evaded the question of why would the rebels come to the Black Pit, as if he didn’t have an answer. For just a moment, he paused his onslaught to think.

Hierlock:”And yet you ask for my trust, when many of the rebels are just traitors. You, your father, and many others, all just bastards breaking their oaths!”

He swung again, a devastating overhead attack. Even as Craiven shielded himself with the discarded shield, this crushing blow still sent him crashing to the ground. His heart began thumping erratically, seeing the Captain standing over him. He only had a second to think, grasping onto his hand-crossbow.

Craiven:"B-Blinding flash!"

As he called out, as a streak of light shot out from the hand crossbow.

Hierlock:”Arg! Fuck!”

Hierlock rubbed his eyes with his gauntlet, careful not to stab them out with his hammer. Though his vision was blurry, he kept attacking, just with less accuracy, a mighty swing of his hammer followed by a slash using the blade on his shield. Hurriedly clambering to his feet, Craiven uses this opportunity to grab his faithful shield. He was able to bat aside the Captain's bladed shield, but as he raises the Coward's Yelp above his head....an ear-splitting sound of crunching metal signalled the end of his trusted shield's service. As the bifurcated shield landed on the ground, split in half by the hammer's might, Craiven's focus shifted from engaging the Captain at close range to grabbing the nearest polearm in the hopes that he could stall the giant's furious onslaught. Hierlock was ready and winding up for a blow that would hit Craiven so hard his ancestors from five generations ago would flinch in their graves, when doubts stopped him. Once again, his mind wandered back to the question. WHY would the rebels go all the way out here to hurt Morrion? Were they seeking some of the magic artifacts the late (but not missed) Inquisitor Skurtap was rumored to be hiding? Or were the traitor prince’s words true, and were the rebels really seeking to help Morrion. Either way, his thoughts stalled the captain. Steeling himself, Craiven readied the battle-damaged polearm gripped tightly in his hands. He could see that the Captain hesitated. Were he a mere soldier, he could have used this opportunity to exploit Hierlock's weakened state.

Craiven:"My word as Prince of this realm may not mean anything to you or your peers, Hierlock, but it is the truth! For the sake of our people, for Duke Zorrual, you must allow us passage."

Hierlock looked around. His troops were getting overwhelmed despite their numbers advantage. He growled.

Hierlock:”Enough!”

His hammer igniting with divine light, he swung it towards Craiven, cracking the ground with a destruction wave (that’s the correct name for that spell, right?). Between his frustration and doubts, he lashed out with his paladin might. Grasping the polearm, Craiven leapt backward. The moment he lands, he fumbles, tripping over a discarded helmet.

Craiven:"Oof!"

Shaking his head, he then held the discarded soldier's polearm ready. Raising himself into a kneeling position, he braces the polearm steady, grasping the haft with both hands as he lifts it above his head. As the captain was about to follow up on the powerful spell, he nearly charged head first into the raised polearm, almost stabbing his own eye out. Stopping just barely, he instead spun around, swinging his tail at Craiven. Craiven gruntsed as he wass knocked to the side by Hierlock's tail. He winced, before rolling to the side as his hand wrapped around the hilt of a discarded sword. Standing back to his feet, the Prince's eyes met the Captain's. His left shoulder felt like he had a boulder thrown at him. The captain glared at the prince, a mix of rage and doubts on his face.

Hierlock:”I gave you rebels a chance to surrender! You CHOSE to fight! As they did in Morrion!”

The captain, still full of rage and doubts, charged at Craiven, his head lowered as he went in for a charge not dissimilar to a bull or a rhino. Ducking out of the way, Craiven scarcely realised he had dropped his weapon until seconds after the Captain's charge.

Craiven:"And yet we chose to fight FOR Morrion's sake, against those who would see it burned to the ground!"

As the captain stormed past, he charged right into a tree. Dazed from the impact, he barely heard Craiven’s words. But even barely, he DID hear them. Still torn between doubts and fury, the Captain charged again, this time going in for a kick to the chest. Rolling again onto his side, Craiven grabbed the haft of his prior weapon. With only a second to aim, he used his good arm to throw the spear directly at the Captain's lower body.

Craiven:"RRRAAAGGH!"

Hierlock:”RAGH!!”

The captain roared as the spear hit him right below the knee. Dropping his hammer, he pulled it out and threw it at Craiven, though as he did his leg gave out, forcing him onto one knee. Hitting the dirt in front of him, Craiven could hear the spear whistle just inches from his head. When he looked up, he could see the injured Captain on one knee. Cautiously, the Prince walked over to Captain Hierlock. He glanced down at him, his hand curling up into a fist, before he breathed a laboured sigh.

Craiven:"Call off your men."

Hierlock looks around, seeing only one man still standing, a venator in the back.

Hierlock:”Grrrrr. I yield.”

The lone venator looked shocked at the captain as the captain put his hammer down, glaring at the prince with a mixture of hatred and confusion, as well as a sliver of respect for his combat prowess.

Hierlock:”Now what?”

Follow up comic soon for the first major decision

2024.05.16 16:56 Yeetaway1404 Warcraft Series MUST happen. Here's why:

I know I know... yet another Warcraft movie shill post, but hear me out:
Warcraft movies have long been a fan's daydream. As a long time fan and active player I'm no different. In fact I might have gone a bit overboard with fantasies about it, but I did some thinking and research and here's an outline of what I think can make the franchise a success and launch a potential WoW cinematic universe. I know most of this has already probably been said before, but I want to put it all in a single place where we can see if theres any way to push this to Blizzard/Microsoft and make it finally happen.
A three-part telling of the story of Arthas in streamable series format.
Part 1: The Fall of Lordaeron - We follow Arthas from his young Paladin days through the events of discovering the scourge and ending with the Purging of Stratholm. The ending with "This whole city must be purged" is an amazing finale foreshadowing the downfall of the main protagonist.
Part 2: Frostmourn Hungers - Arthas, now on a downwards spiral goes to Northrend and finds Frostmourn. This part would cover his Northrend campaign, slowly corrupting him into the Lich King's will. Includes the return to kill his father, the destruction of Quel'Thalas, resurrection of Kel'Thuzad and ultimately ends with Arthas putting on the Lich King armor and helm.
Part 3: The Lich King - Starting with the WotLK cinematic, it would follow the story of the WotLK expansion and shift focus slightly on the world banding together to defeat Arthas. The ending should be kept exactly the same - the champions of the Horde and Alliance together with Tirion defeat the Lich King exactly as it was told in the game.
Cast ideas:
It is important that the main cast and director crew are fans of WoW and its story, so they represent it well. I've picked a list of several casting choices that have either played WoW or would just fit too well with the character they portray in my opinion. The following list is more of a wish-list, but as with any production - known names bring audience.
Director - Sam Raimi. He is a WoW player and was allegedly "desperate" to direct the first Warcraft movie. Having a good director who is a fan of the lore and game is critical for the success of this (see Last of Us for example)
Arthas - Henry Cavill is the obvious, well-known, best choice. Apart from being so close to how Arthas looks, he would inevitably bring an enormous audience of non-WoW fans and almost guarantee success.
Jaina - Mila Kunis or Cameron Diaz. Both have played WoW and both can portray Jaina in a slightly different way but close to the depiction in the game. Even Ella Purnel (the Fallout role of Lucy) could do a great job here.
Tirion - Gary Oldman. He not only fits the visual representation of Tirion, but even his voice is similar. His previous roles have resemblance to the character arch of Tirion (e.g. Gordon in The Dark Knight)
Uther - Jeff Bridges. Requires no further explanation. He just is Uther.
Bolvar - Travis Fimmel. He did great as Lothar, but he would do even better as Bolvar in my opinion.
Kel'Thuzad - Ralph Fiennes. We dont have much to go off of for his visual depiction in his Human form, but Fiennes portrayal of Voldemort and Hades fits very well with this character.
Darion Mograine - Christian Bale. This is a an important character and Bale's representation of complex conflicting characters could be amazing for this.
Antonidas - Ian McKellen. Simple - nobody can portray an old wise archmage as good as him so far.
The list goes on and on and I wont try to be exhaustive here as the goal is to just give an idea of what it could look like with a star studded cast. Theres an infinite number of good choices, so theres no point in getting stuck on casting. Frankly the only choice that is non-negotiable is Cavill as Arthas in my opinion.
Main reasons why now is the time for it:
Creating a series, rather then movies, is quite crucial. If Last of Us showed us anything, it is that series allows you to tell peripheral stories really well in isolation, without distracting from the main narrative. I dont see a realistic way of telling all the different plots going into the Arthas story without butchering it. Things like The Wrathgate, The Ashbringer, Tirion's backstory, Illidan and his quest against Arthas, etc. would feel out of place in a movie, but quite natural in a series. There is no other way to tell WoW lore along the main story and open up the doors for cinematic universe of movies and series stemming from this main branch.
Streaming services have allowed series to evolve and tell stories in a way that movies never could. They have started a great trend of bringing games to the big screen. This trend seems to be getting stronger and stronger. Classic WoW showed that Warcraft fans are here and hungry for the epicness of the original games. The hype is there. WotLK just ended, so the nostalgia will start crippling in. We just defeated the Lich King, now its time to see the story told in its full potential.
Blizzard appears to be on a downward trend with WoW subs and are seemingly desperate for cash and ideas of bringing the playerbase back into the game in full swing. What better way then telling this story and potentially turning the whole world to fans who would at least want to try the game after watching a great series? Just think of Cavill as Arthas and the amount of wives/gfs who would suddenly find out that WoW might be cool :D
Microsoft taking ownership of Blizzard is another positive - Fallout is part of Microsoft and it is doing great as a series. This might suggest that Microsoft understands the potential of those franchises coming to the screen and being very successful on their own, while bringing lots of new players to the game, thus increasing profits in two separate streams.
If Last of Us, Witcher and Fallout are doing so well - think of the game that everyone and their mother knows. If there was ever a game that virtually everyone knows, has a story that is perfect to film and has great names in the industry passionate about - it is World of Warcraft. Jumping on this band wagon, WoW has a history of coming to the scene and becoming the king. It would be no different as series - the one that makes them all pale in comparison.
It is what WoW has been leading up to. It is what it was destined to become.
This wont be just a success. This would be a grand slam.
P.S. If you agree with me, help me get a petition or buzz going. I'm a noob at this, but classic wow happened with community effort. This can happen too if we will it into existance. If anyone knows how to do this - let me know.

2024.05.16 06:13 Xzandr1003 In your opinion whats the best archer/ranger follower in Skyrim

In your opinion whats the best archeranger follower in Skyrim
Right how im playing the modpack Nolvus so if you know a modded follower on there i'd also accept that. Im trying to make a kinda balanced party. I have a modded follower right now named Tocatta and shes a kinda paladin build with sword and restoration. Im a 2 handed spellsword as I can attach spells to my swords and fire them at will. Im looking for an archeranger, rogue, and full blown mage to complete my party. For mage on just thinking Jzargo but im up for suggestions. For archer im thinking Aela but I dont want to have to complete the companions questline to get to her. So any suggestions would be helpful (sorry for the long ass paragraph)

So I just finished episode 17 and I feel like I missed something with Fig becoming paladin. I remember when she talked about being Cassandra’s Paladin but in the latest episode they talk about Porter getting Ankarna’s champion to write his name and that was Fig. When did she become Ankarna’s paladin?

2024.05.15 23:34 clinical_Cynicism You did WHAT to my Sister?!

After the great scattering and the unification of Terra and the Sol system. The Emperor ventured out to conquer the galaxy and search for his Primarchs. During this great crusade many Primarchs were found, and despite some setbacks, reunited with their legions. His Primarchs were tasked with the further unification and subjugation of the fragmented remnants of humanity throughout the stars. In this they were told to keep a lookout for their fellow creations. Some Primarchs like Vulkania, Hathor and Sanguinia were devoting great efforts to find and rescue their lost Sisters while the more coldly pragmatic ones like Ferra, Perturaba and Ellanor treated this task as more of a chore with the expectation of unearthing a new weapon for the war effort. So in Year 888 of M 30 of the imperial standard calendar the blood angels legion and their primarch Sanguinia were carrying out the expansion efforts in the borderzone of the growing ultramar exclave. As it happened they came across a civilized human world, that its residence called Nuceria. Sanguinia, ever the charming diplomat, had first contact messages sent out on all possible vox channels and frequencies and even utilizing communication methods from the dark age of technologie in hopes of reaching the planetary authorities. After managing to establish a reliable method of communication she scheduled plans to send an envoy for a planetary landing and subsequent negotiations about the integration into the imperium. As they were loading up the landing crafts with gifts and weapons and diplomats and space marines, Sanguinia was walking across the main hangar bay of the Red Tear. Looking left and right over all the busy people, her wings swaying in the breeze of the air conditioning. At the end of the hangar hall she saw admiral Ares DuCade hurrying towards her with his entourage. She took a moment to stand still and look at him coming, her moment of peace would soon be over.
“There you are my lord, I have been looking for you all morning! You weren’t on the flight deck, you weren’t on the command deck nor on the Bridge nor in your personal quarters and not even on the observation deck could I find you. Landing group alpha primus were worried to terra and back, that their main asset wouldn’t show up in time for take off. First officer Morel almost cried at the thought of having lost a Primarch! Just what in the Imperiums name has possessed you to roam the lower bowes of the ship!” Sanguinia smiled and laughed: “Oh I just wanted to ensure that the ensins and marines of objective group two and three were well rested. I know they don’t mind doing the less glamorous security work but I don’t want them to feel left out just because they couldn’t take part in the parade today.” DuCarde sighed: “Please at least tell your personal security detail before going on such an unscheduled escapade”. He looked at his Primarch, then blushed and looked away. “But thank you for caring about the men”, he couldn’t stay mad at her, not with that smile. “Well then, let us proceed, before we cause a delay, If we go now we should just about make it in time”, Sanguinia winked at him and led the way.
As predicted the transport shuttles departed just in time and the descent to Nuceria was smooth and without issue. Group primus would head down towards the capitol and land just outside in a spectacular flight show before parading into the city where they would engage in the negotiations. Sanguinia knew the importance of making powerful and benevolent first impressions. Group secundus and tertius would make a less impressive descent and position themselves near the military, logistics and communications centers, just in case the talks went sour or the planetary authority would try to pull a fast one on the Legion. But so far everything went to plan, they were almost at the main square, their diplomats had engaged the planetary politicians and even though her personal honor guard was tense, looking for danger around every corner, Sanguinia made a calm and relaxed impression. She had to make a conscious effort for this impression but she knew as soon as this was done she could return to her beloved little dove and spend with them the time that was otherwise allocated for the conquest of this planet. The Desh’ean nobility welcomed Sanguinia and one man stepped forward and introduced himself as lord Thal’kr, leader of the ruling clan. His pompous attitude suggested he saw himself as an equal to Sanguinia, from one lord to another, this was a nuisance that she would just have to deal with. Usually putting pretentious mortals in their place wasn’t an issue for any primarch and she could do it tactfully too, but something about this seemed to give the red angel a headache. Regardless they followed the planetary customs to the necessary degree and were soon invited to a spectacle in the colosseum. Sanguinia, her honor guard, her remembrancer and various other guests were placed in the royal lounge with servants, wine and a grandiose view over the arena. While she was half heartedly listening to the japping of lord Thal’kr her gaze glanced over the rest of the stadium. It was packed. Bread and games seemed to keep the populous obedient. Her headache was still not going away. It was a weird feeling, not even her prescience would allow her to divine what it was. She tried to direct her focus back to what the noble was saying. “...So anyway we have this great gladiator, basically a giant, and the best part is, She’s basically indestructible. Any wound and any torment we inflict on her she recovers from. The populus loves her, especially when we have her fight great beasts like mammoths and nucerian mountain lions. But personally I think her best performance was when we had her fight alongside her adoptive father in an impossible fight, and then when they survived, we told them to kill each other! HAHAHAHA.” The laughter of the fat, opulent tyrant made Sanguinia want to cringe and turn away, but something told her to pay attention. Sanguinia became envious of her bodyguards, for they had helmets behind which they could hide their disgust. This man's ruling ethics could not have been further apart from her own. She tries to distract herself by looking at the faces of the other attendance. To her dismay the only other local that seemed to find anything wrong with this story was a young mortal standing by the balcony and holding a bouquet of flowers. Lord Thal’kr seemed to notice. "Oh? Do you fancy the little one? They are one of my Children. I’ll introduce you.” He turned and called out: “Hei Yarrow come here and give the nice lady the courtesy will you?” The young mortal hurried over, almost tripping over their light robes. They stood in front of the red angel and bowed deeply; clearly they had been raised to be polite and respectful in anticipation for a marriage alliance. “H-hello your highness my name is Yarrow, I’m blessed to meet you,” they blushed but stayed composed even in the presence of someone as intimidating as a primarch. “Come on little one be nice and subservient and maybe the lady will take you away and show you the stars beyond our world,” the tyrant laughed, “what were you doing over there by the balcony anyway? You weren’t thinking any bad thoughts about the gladiators again were you?” “Ah n-no father. Of course not.” “That’s still ‘my lord’ to you.” He shooed young Yarrow away. “Anyway, where was I? Ah yes, And then they thought they could be slick by refusing to fight each other, but we won’t be defied that easily, so we pumped her full of stimulants and had neural-anti cognitors placed in her head. Oh you should’ve seen her then, ripped her father apart like a squealing rabbit. And how she cried afterwards, like a little bitch. Oh what wouldn’t I give to hear that again.” Another noble chimed in:”But what about the time we made her fight her lover?” “Who do you mean?” The tyrant asked. “Gladiolus the beautiful but fearsome young Gladiator,” the noble replied. “Ah yeah HAHA. Well not so fearsome in the end were they?” Lord Thal’kr laughed again. “You have to know, when we learned about their relationship, they had apparently gotten close after the death of her father, we brought the two into the arena. They thought they would be fighting beasts but in reality they would have to fight each other. We gave her just enough time to realize her predicament before we pumped up the pressure on those anti-cognitors and turned her back into a wild savage animal. You should have seen them. Gladiolus pleaded with her to ‘snap out of it’ but she fell upon them and crushed their skull between her thighs like a watermelon. It was a delicious spectacle.” This man seemed to relish in the memory and just as Sanguinia contemplated if it was worth keeping him around he went: “Look! There She is. Child of the mountain, Mistress of the red sands along with our finest gladiators. Hail to those about to die!”
Sanguinia looked down into the arena and got hit with a wave of realization like an orbital bombardment. As she stared down she knew what the feeling was that had plagued her all day. It was this presence that she sensed and her prescience that had been screaming at her what her mind didn’t want to comprehend. But now it stood there below her, clear as day and no longer deniable. She thought no primarch could be more haggard than Morrigan and no such demigod could be more disheveled than Corvess. But she was wrong. Before her eyes stood, wrapped in chains, beaten and broken, her own flesh and blood. And as Angron looked up at the red angel standing at the parapet, all that Sanguinia could do was to close her mind to the visions of what was to come.
“You did WHAT to my Sister?!” The red angel spoke, dry and sharp, hair fell across her face and droplets of black blood fell on the parapet. “Well… we…”, before the tyrant could even speak she fell upon him. A massive hand clamped around his jaw and ripped it off. The guards reacted fast but the astarties reacted faster, thow they could not do much more than dispatch of the armed men before Azkellon ordered them to stand down. They looked over at their primarch who, in this brief moment, had already torn her way through seven other nobles with bare hands and was now about to reach her sword. Azkellon saw that the situation had turned most dire and knew he had to take charge. He turned on the vox:”all channels, situation’s fubar. Proceed with operational backup plan. Don’t go near mother, she is violent and unresponsive.” He then turned towards the brothers standing next to him and shouted: “Sanguinary guard evacuate the premises, ensure the retreat of all imperial non-combatants and most important of all: rescue that Primarch!” He pointed down into the arena, the lower levels of the stadium hadn’t yet realized what was happening, but sure enough there would be mass panic and a stampede. The Astarties split up and Azkellon along with his squad hopped down into the upper levels of the stadium. They did so just in time because the roof of the lodge began to buckle as the red angel cut through men and stone pillars as if they were straw. Azkellon cursed under his breath. He should have insisted on jump packs for this operation. It was no use now, they had to make their way down into the arena by foot, cut a way if necessary. When they were finally in the bottom rows the roof of the lodge above them collapsed and they heard an ear ringing scream: “HOW DARE YOU!” and “MY BABY SISTER!”. Clearly the primarch had finished massacring the major nobles in attendance and was now carving a bloody canyon through the minor ones. The stadium was now in full panik and mortals were scrambling over each other to get out of their own slaughterhouse. The Astarties hopped another fence down into the arena. A few bolter rounds dispatched of the remaining guards and Azkellon made his way over to the still restrained Angron. The next few words he spoke would be crucial to ensure the primarchs' cooperation; he had to choose them carefully and he had to choose them fast. “Mistress of the red sands, we are the angels of the Godemperor of mankind sent to aid you in your escape from this wretched place!” He prayed to Terra that she didn’t actually want to stay here. But to his relief Angron nodded and spoke:”My thanks. Get me out of these shackles, I can fight for myself.” Azkellon hurried to get out his multi-tool and got to work on the primarchs bindings. As he did so he looked her in the eyes and said: “it’s okay, you no longer need to fight for or by yourself.” Angron tried to stay stoic but he could see that the primarch was fighting to hold back tears. She looked as thow decades and decades of prayers prayed cold and lonely cells had finally been answered. When the shackles cracked and broke she turned away: ”They come with me”, she pointed to the other gladiators in the arena. “Very well”, Azkellon knew he couldn’t refuse her or the tenuous trust they had just built would be null and void. His squad freed the gladiators and they hurried out of the arena as Askellon ordered another thunderhawk for evacuation. As the last to leave the arena he looked back and saw the seating area had been filled with so much gore and viscera that blood began to spill over and run down the walls into the sand of the fighting pit. He made another vox call to the red tear and ordered them to get Dove on that thunderhawk along with as many tranquilizers as they could muster. They would need any help they could get if they wanted Sanguinia to calm down.
Angron led the astarties through the underbowels of the arena; clearly she knew her way around. However, that also meant that she chose a way that went past all the prison cells to free as many of the caged slaves, gladiators and animals as she could. Azkellon did not complain, he just wanted to get out of here. When they finally managed to leave the colosseum for good they stopped to take a brief respite. Angron turned to Azkellon and said: “I am grateful for your efforts but please, may I ask, you remove your helmet if you are able to, I’d like to see your face if you have one.” He did so and confirmed what he had felt for a while. Tears of black blood streamed down his cheeks and seeped out of his helmet. She looked shocked. “I’m sorry miss, this doesn’t usually happen, but our mother … your sister… it must be the deep connection we have with her that causes this.” Before he could apologize further for the undignified display, they saw a figure rise above the colosseum. The red angel had spread her bloodstained wings and was flying towards the ruling palace at the other end of the city. Over the vox the voice of the enraged primarch could be heard: “LET NONE LEAVE ALIVE! SHOOT ANY THAT ESCAPE THE CITY!” Azkellon had to quickly amend those orders to ensure that the slaves they rescued would survive. Then he voxed in with the other squad of sanguinary guard to get a status report on the evacuation of the imperial diplomats. Luckily they were almost out of the city and operational groups secundus and tertius hadn’t said anything so it was to be assumed that their part went to plan and there wouldn’t be any planetary reinforcements arriving in the city anytime soon. The squad tended to the malnourished slaves and wounded gladiators as best they could and then embarked on the safest possible route out of Desh’ea. The mortals would slow them down but leaving them behind wasn’t much of an option. Besides, mother had always reminded them that they were once mortal as well.
When they were about half way towards the extraction zone, they passed a squad of blood angel terminators carrying heavy equipment and escorting a young mortal. “Barbiel, is that you?” Azkellon shouted over to them. “Yes, great herald, we have the assets you requested.” “Good, the primarch went that way towards the palace. See if you can stop her madness. … Barbiel?" The crimson paladin seemed to stare off into the space behind him. But when Azkellon saw that it wasn’t just him but the other terminators and the young Dove as well he realized what it was. “This is primarch Angron Thal'kyr. we are escorting her to the thunderhawk for evacuation.” The terminators composed themselves, nodded and then hurried along.
And so passed another tense hour of walking through empty and abandoned streets while avoiding the panicking crowds. The hysteria had spread throughout the entire city and rightfully so. There wasn’t a gutter that didn’t have a trickle of blood running through it. Azkellon knew the power of the primarchs but he was still taken aback at how much carnage a single entity could cause. If there was a god of slaughter, he would surely smile this day.
When they reached the edges of the city Azkellon was relieved to hear the turbines of the thunderhawk. Angron stood still behind him, apparently needing a moment. Surely this was the first time she saw a spacecraft. “Where will this take us?” she asked. “Far away from this sight of misery,” he answered. It wasn’t untrue. “I’ll gladly go but first I need one more person to come with me,” she turned around and walked back towards the city, “I need my Yarrow, I need my desert flower, I cannot leave without them.” Azkellon was glad he had put his helmet back on, as he was certain all the color just drained from his face. He quickly voxed in with the terminator team asking if they had managed to calm down Sanguinia. Indeed they had somehow managed to stabilize her with a combination of Doves' kind words and enough tranquilizers to kill a horde of grox. Then He asked about the Tyrant's Child and after a moment of silence got the answer he did not want to expect. The red angel had slain the young mortal in her episode of unending rage. Azkellon thanked the emperor that he was the only one who could hear that answer. He told them to bring back the body of the slain Yarrow and tell Angron that they were killed by their father. He also stressed that they should ensure that no one ever finds out the truth, especially not Angron or any member of the war hounds legion.
When Angron heard news of the perishing of her second lover, she was inconsolable. She wept until they brought her the lifeless body and she wept over them the entire flight back, and she wept at the funeral when they let their corpse drift into the sun over Nuceria and she wept for several days after. These were a rough couple days despite the planetary conquest going off with very few issues. As Sanguinia read the report her legions apothecaries made about Angron and the butcher's nails in her head, she too fluctuated between rage and sorrow. She cradled and comforted her sister trying anything to lessen her pain. Finally she decided on the surgical removal of the butcher’s nails. When her apothecaries warned her of the dangers and the possibility of killing or stunting her sister, she almost tore one of their heads off shouting: “I’d rather have a brain dead sister than a suffering one.” Alas Sanguinia decided to perform the procedure herself. Her apothecaries suggested returning to nearby Ultramar to take advantage of their medical facilities, but Sanguinia denied them for she could not bear to see her Sister in agony for a single second longer.
Preparations were made and when the day of the surgery came all the medical staff of the red tear that could attend, did so. Even the ones who weren’t required sat in the amphitheater and watched the tense procedure. Sanguinia walked onto the operating floor covered in sterile white robes and a surgical mask over her face. Even her wings were covered in sterile white bindings. They would not remain white for long. Angron was rolled in and placed upon the operating table. Sanguinia looked at the sedated and still body of her sister; she was only covered in a ghostly thin sheet. “Father give me strength”, she muttered under her breath. A dozen astarties and two dozen mortal doctors huddled around the two. One of them handed Sanguinia a custom made pair of operating gloves. She dawned them, flicked them to ensure they sat tight and spoke: “let us begin”. A mortal brought her the scalpel. ‘This shall be the blade I wield today’, She thought to herself.
The surgery was long and arduous; it took three whole days before it was over. By the end Sanquinia was exhausted, she had to focus on making perfect nanometer cuts while simultaneously concentrating on using her prescience to ensure the best possible outcome. She slumped into a chair; her otherwise perfect hair was sweaty and messy. When a doctor came in to tell her that Angron's vital signs read normal, her exhausted face managed to curl into a mellow smile. Dove wanted to comfort her after all the work she did, but she only allowed it for a moment. For Sanguinia knew that her sister would soon awake and she needed to be there. When Angron awoke and looked into her sister's eyes she smiled, feeling as if she had awoken from the nightmare that was her life on Nuceria. But when she saw Dove standing by her sister's side she broke into tears, for she remembered. She remembered not only how she lost Yarrow but she remembered how she lost Gladiolus too. The butcher's nails prevent memories from being formed while in a state of rage but that is only effective in normal men. Angron's nails had prevented her from remembering how she murdered her father and crushed her lover in the arena but now she saw it again, clear as day. She wept and wailed in the arms of her sister, soaking her hair and wings in tears.
The pain of the nails was gone but the pain of the past was one that could not be lifted. Angron engaged with her sister, for Sanguinia managed to take her mind off of the grief she still felt. But this would not last long, for soon the Conqueror arrived carrying the war hounds legion, forcing the two sisters to separate. After this Angron fell into a deep deep depression. Ordered to lead men she barely even knew and on board of a ship she found to be unfamiliar, Angron felt even more alone than in the slave pits of Nuceria. Not even the slaves she rescued were there to accompany her for she had sent them away to a paradise world, far away so they may never again be forced to fight. Angron was alone again, she was frightened again and most of all: she was in a cage again. She locked herself in her chambers, where she sank deeper and deeper into grief and sorrow. When her marines came and tried to talk to her she lashed out in desperation, killing more than a few. Even though the nails were removed, she still felt like she was only here to endure a life of suffering and torment.

2024.05.15 21:44 W00LYS Cust feat balance help

If the names "Pip & Beans" mean anything to you, please stop reading.
I hope this is an appropriate sub to post this, sorry if not!
Hello, I've made custom feats for each of my players and id like some guidance on balancing.
Bard -
2 new uses of bardic inspiration;
Diving Keel; while flying, move more than 25 feet in a straight line and attack. On a hit, add the number rolled on your bardic inspiration to the damage. If attacking a huge or smaller creature, the creature must make a strength save against your spell save DC. On a failed save they are pushed 10ft in the direction the PC is travelling.
Offensive blockade; if a creature that has been given inspiration and uses the inspiration to add to a melee attack, on a hit the enemy creature's movement speed is reduced by 10ft until the start of the player's next turn. This reduction is increased to 15ft if the PC is within 20ft of the creature. // Wizard -
"Wins" about engagement with information allows the Player to access "Intellectual Aegis", this condition grants the following benefits;
Advantage on intelligence saves and checks. Gain temporary hit points equal to intelligence modifier. Gain cold resistance.
This lasts 4 hours or until the PC experiences an "L".
*I recognise this is very subjective and so balancing for those not in the game might be difficult - for context this player as part of their character notes down wins and losses day to day. An example of a win is "knowing things others don't and explaining these things to them", and example of a loss is "someone correcting my information". // Rogue -
Gain advantage on initiative checks.
Can use a bonus action to access "Blitz", this condition grants the following benefits;
15ft movement. Advantage on dexterity saves and checks. +1 AC. This Lasts 5 rounds (30 seconds)
Can activate this a number of times equal to the PC's constitution modifier. // Paladin -
You can spend 10 minutes exercising with your companions, shoring up their physical prowess. When you do so, choose up to six friendly creatures (can include yourself) within 40ft of you who are participating in exercise with you. Each creature can gain advantage on their next Constitution save and Strength save/check. A creature can't benefit from this feat again until it has finished a short or long rest.
Player with this advantage must declare it after the roll but before they know the result. // Druid -
At the start of everyday, the PC can choose to speak to animals, this has the effect of the "Speak with animals" spell but lasts the entire day. Once the PC can access 3rd level spells, he can choose between speaking to animals or plants for the day. Speaking to plants operates the same as the "Speak with plants" spell but lasts the entire day.
Possibly helpful extra information;
Party composition is - Aaracockra Bard, Merfolk Wizard, Changeling Rogue, Firbolg Paladin and Warforged Druid. All are level 4.
Some of these are obvious riffs on spells/magic items. Sorry for any poor spelling/formatting!

2024.05.15 21:41 Chair1511 My Clancy Pre-Album Ranking

I know I'm super late to this trend but I wanted to wait until all of singles were released to do a pre-album ranking. Since the listening parties are this Friday I figured I would just go ahead and throw my hat into the ring.
  1. Midwest Indigo - This one seems to be the most anticipated songs off the album and I can see why. Ever since I saw the name I've wanted this song. I'm hoping it'll be the Morph of this album.
  2. Next Semester - I just love this song. It's a perfect song and is probably top 10 TOP for me.
  3. The Craving - This one for sure is the strangest song title wise and we joked about it for a while but after hearing the live version I absolutely love this song and I can wait to hear the live version.
  4. Paladin Strait - This is another one of the most anticipated songs on record and for good reason. The final song in the story and the true end to an era. It's going to be amazing just like all of their album closers but usually the album closer don't end up as my favorites of the album surprisingly enough. I know it'll be great and it'll probably be one of TOP's best but for now I'll put it here.
  5. At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb - I'm not the first to make this connection but it reminds me of We Don't Believe What's On TV and that's by favorite BF song.
  6. Oldies Station - It reminds me of Legend and I absolutely love that song. I'm hoping it'll be like Legend and be a super powerful and emotional song in an upbeat and hopeful package.
  7. Lavish - It sounds super interesting and I could just imagine it sounding similar to Backslide beat and genre wise given the title and video sneak peak.
  8. Overcompensate - a great song and a great start to this album and era.
  9. Backslide - I really like Backslide, it's a fun song with a great flow and is so emotionally and lyrically dense. I'm hoping that the rest of the album will follow through being emotionally powerful like this song and especially Next Semester is.
  10. Routines in the night - I hate that have to put some of these song this low in the ranking but I think that's a good testament to how great I think this album will be. I think this will be a great song but lower down in the list comparatively. Based on what I've heard other people saying this song could be the Neon Gravestones of the album.
  11. Vignette - Super Interesting title wise and I feel like it could be another somber song where it retails a moment of weakness or mental vulnerability.
  12. Snap Back - This one to me sounds like it could be similar to Overcompensate. A high energy and a song where Clancy is truly feeling himself and is ready to take down Dema.
  13. Navigating - based on title alone it seems like the most basic song of the album. I'm super it'll still be good but I think it has the least potential given title alone.

2024.05.15 20:30 Shalidar13 Last Weeks Writing Prompts (6th May to 12th May)

Hello Readers
Here is this week's collation of WritingPrompts responses!
As always, if you see anything you would like to see me expand upon, or have questions on why I went that direction, please let me know!
6th May: With the last of her power the witch cursed the knight so everything they say is twisted the worst way possible. So the knight decided to simply never talk.
7th May: You and your team have everything you had to defeat the enemy. With their dying breath(s), they tell you that there are two more even stronger than them! And they’ll arrive in 6 months tops.
8th May: "Heroes always want to uphold order while villains want to create chaos. I however want to create perfect order out of total chaos."
9th May: It's been days since the world has found out not only that you have superpowers, but the ability to give others superpowers as well. You are constantly getting calls from religious leaders, governments, celebrities and activists trying to get your to give them or the world superpowers.
10th May: “We’re sorry, we didn’t know she was your daughter!” “And that’s your justification? You’re sorry because the vulnerable little girl you kidnapped was the wrong little girl? Are you saying you wouldn’t be sorry if it was any other little girl?”
11th May: Your Paladin companion died, and you, a Changeling, have worn their shape since and continued their mission. The Order your friend belonged to knows who you are and politely rejected you, but does not stop you. No one else knows.
12th May: You are an Eldritch being as old as the universe but you want to befriend the humans and see the world from their perspective, enjoy the little things.

2024.05.15 19:47 VicariousDrow Canonical Origin Companion Multiclasses

Hey guys, took a break from BG3 for a bit but recently came back for my, I think, 7th playthrough and recently finished the first step I always take when starting anew; Setting up my companion's classes beforehand lol
Idk how many other people do this, but I always plan out what classes I'm gonna make each companion before starting, each time being slightly different, and I refuse to have any subclass overlap and I always try to keep each canonically accurate. This time I decided I'd go back to their main starting classes but I'd make them all unique multiclasses, again with zero subclass overlap and all entirely canonically accurate.
Normally I just go about this on my own but a friend was asking me about it and was asking for help cause as he put it he's really bad at making multiclasses that work but wants to "mix up" his companions for his 2nd playthrough, so I shared my current "load out" with him and he loved it all so much he said I should share it "online or something" lol Well I'm sitting here at work waiting for some crap to load before I can actually do anything with it so figured I could pass the time with sharing my newest origin multiclasses for anyone interested in smaller mixups!
This is gonna get long, also there will be spoilers as I'll be talking about WHY some of these work based on their lore, sometimes lore that's revealed later in the game, you've been warned lol
  1. Shadowheart - Life Cleric lvl 6/Gloom Stalker lvl 6
For starters, Trickster Doman sucks ass, secondly this idea leans more into Selune anyways. The premise of this one is to lean into the fact she's a "torn person," even if she doesn't know it at first she's stuck between this divine rivalry of Selune and Shar, so splitting the classes evenly is kind of a representation of that.
Gloom Stalker more represents not only Shar and her influence but also her earlier upbringing, we know her parents were druids and she had to go through some sort of rite about going off into the woods at a young age, so her being a Ranger by default works in my mind (can also choose Sanctified Stalker for lore). Life Cleric leans more on Selune thematically, but is also chosen to mechanically make such an even split work.
The Life Cleric's ability to increase the amount healed works based on a flat amount plus the spell level, so you don't need a lot of specific class levels to make it work, and getting at least lvl 5 in Ranger provides extra attack, placing such a multiclass in the role of damage dealer but with a fairly substantial amount of healing compared to other options. You will be lacking in higher level spells but as the main focus will be as a Ranger I don't think that'll be a hindrance to effectiveness in the slightest. Ranged will also work better, imo, as you want to have access to your bonus action for healing words and hunter's mark usage so dual wielding won't be as good and no other melee option available to Ranger will match the effectiveness of focusing on archery, but that doesn't mean you can't do it if you want to lol
I changed her stats slightly to focus on Dex and Wis, mostly just syphoning points from her Str into her Dex and leaving most everything else as it is, then started by leveling the Ranger first, fit better for the early game being all about Shar, and also getting to extra attack asap.
2. Lae'zel - Battle Master lvl 4/Great Old One Warlock lvl 8
Now I know the most common reaction will be "warlock!?" But here me out lol
Githyanki worship Vlaakith, their god, but she isn't actually a god, she's a powerful lich trying to become a god. So making Lae'zel some sort of Cleric doesn't actually make any sense, since her deity technically shouldn't be able to grant any divine powers, but we do see her more powerful followers having abilities, specifically psionic abilities, almost like a GOO Warlock. Now I know Gith all have latent psionics so that's largely why they also have such powers, but why not accentuate that further with Pact Magic? You can also play it off as not actually being a warlock, since it's never mentioned in game regardless, and it's just her own psionic abilities manifesting, simply choose the most psionically reminiscent spells, even if they won't be the most effective her spells won't be her main strength anyways.
Obviously make her a PotB Warlock, and focus on melee combat with BM maneuvers, but having access to Hex and potentially even Eldritch Blast will just make her that much more powerful as a damage dealer. Both subclasses also recharge on short rest, adding some points for convenience lol
Initially stat wise I was a bit torn, cause she's NOT a "charismatic" person, but then I remembered that Charisma doesn't just mean "social skills," it's also "force of person," it's why Sorcerers use it for spell casting, and Lae'zel is most definitely a very confident and expressive person, so I think it actually works. That being said I still focus her Str more then her Cha, just taking some points out of all her other stats to boost it but keeping them the same relative spread, so more in Dex and Con then Int and Wis. Starting her in Warlock until lvl 5 is also advisable, then I like to go straight to Fighter lvl 4 to get BM and a feat, then gonna finish the last few levels in Warlock to get to 4th level spell slots.
3. Gale - Abjuration Wizard lvl 10/Fighter lvl 2
This one in particular is more about mechanics then lore, but I think it still works for both.
Obviously Gale has to be mostly Wizard, he talks about it SO MUCH that it wouldn't make as much sense if he was mostly anything else even if thematically it would work, like Bard or Sorcerer. However I find most Wizard schools to be boring and the ones that work best as multiclasses work better as dips, like 2 levels into Evocation for spell sculpting. Abjuration though works very well as a focus, and feeds into being quite tanky. That's why Fighter, for armor proficiencies, so either need to start as it for heavy armor, use a feat to get it asap, or just give him 14 in Dex and use medium armor. This gives him a high AC while being able to reduce the damage that does hit him, all while still being able to focus on a lot of high damage spells, with lvl 2 in Fighter you also get Action Surge for a round of double spells (double fireballs are great lol).
I think any Wizard school works for Gale canonically, honestly, and Fighter may not make the most sense but he is a well off human with a stellar education from one of the richest cities on the Sword Coast, so part of that education being in the basics of martial combat (no subclass, need lvl 10 in Wizard and makes sense he doesn't have one if it wasn't a focus) makes just enough sense for me to say it works lol
Stat wise you can honestly keep it the same as default, he just needs Int and going for Con secondary works very well, I also just like to give him some Cha cause he's a well spoken man.
4. Astarion - Swords Bard lvl 10/Rogue lvl 2
First things first, I think Astarion simply works better as a Bard by default then he does a Rogue, what with how he apparently would seduce people non-stop to bring back to Cazador, and going College of Swords fits that same "stabby stabby" theme lol
Also yes he can still be your lock picker since Bards get expertise as well.
So in reality I would actually just go all 12 levels into Bard for him, but I did that a number of times and wanted everyone to have their canon class in a multiclass, so 2 levels in Rogue works best. You kinda need lvl 10 in Bard for Magical Secrets, as it's super strong and a lot of fun to add what-the-fuck-ever you want into any build, and 2nd level in Rogue gives cunning action, so go for the Dueling fighting style, focus on bows anyways, and keep your bonus action open for cunning actions as well as his bite.
I redo his stats a fair amount though, to focus entirely on Dex and Cha ofc, but I also tank his Int and Wis to 8 cause it makes sense to me (he's clearly not the wisest and the writers have said he's probably the dumbest of the OG cast lol), and I think a vampire spawn should still have decent Str and Con anyways. For leveling I go straight to 6 in Bard for that extra attack, get 2 in Rogue cause cunning action is fun, then finish the rest of Bard.
5. Wyll - Fiend Warlock lvl 2/Draconic Sorcerer lvl 10
In this case I'm taking some liberties but here me out, again lol
So obviously need Fiend Warlock first, but lvl 2 is important for those first invocations, namely Agonizing Blast. Afterwards just go full Sorcerer! The stretch for how it works is that we know about Ansur now, a bronze dragon confirmed to have been living in Baldur's Gate for YEARS, so who's to say he *wasn't* involved with someone in Wyll's genealogy? lol I know it's HIGHLY unlikely, but it's still possible and I wanted at least one Sorcerer!
So ofc go Bronze ancestry, for the lore, but obviously Red would have the most synergy if you don't care, and make sure to grab quickened spell when you can for meta magic, why? DOUBLE ELDRITCH BLASTING! LOL That's the whole thing with this build, yeah you'll get a lot of spells, high level ones too, so it'll increase his versatility, but doubling down on Eldritch Blasts is incredibly powerful and thematically still sticks with the whole Warlock thing. I like to focus fire based spells to go with the whole Fiendish Patron stuff, but like I said the spells are secondary, believe it or not lol
This is another case of being able to leave his stats as they are, but I personally like to give him a bit of strength, as he is "The Blade of Frontiers," higher then average Str makes sense to me, and I just drain his Wis for it cause dh lol But a focus on Cha and a secondary on Dex is the important part.
6. Karlach - Berserker lvl 8/Thief lvl 4
I think this one is the most straight forward one but also one of my favs mechanically.
Build her like normal as a Berserker, but have her dual wield weapons with finesse, even if she's using Str for them they'll still sneak attack, and when you get the second bonus action her damage will become pretty crazy. Other then a pair of bracers you can find in Act 2 from Dammon I think, there isn't really any way of getting two weapon fighting without a third class dip and I just didn't want to, but at some point some how it'll be necessary.
The reason this works is cause of her upbringing. We all know why she's a Barbarian, but she tells us she was a ruffian when she was younger, even worked for Gortash as basically a thug, so Rogue fits well for me and if she wasn't keen on the law for a while then her being a thief also fits, imo.
Where this build takes off those is all the throwing! lol With Berserker and Thief you can throw a TON of shit per round, you can even take Tavern Brawler if you want to focus on this and carry around a bazillion daggers, the damage actually gets so insane sometimes that I specifically avoid Tavern Brawler cause I already find the game too easy and don't need to clean house THAT effectively lol
Her stats can also be left alone, I like to focus on Str regardless even if Dex might be stronger without Tavern Brawler, but it's an option if you want. Once again though rush through Berserker to lvl 5 for extra attack, then go to Thief lvl 4 for the subclass and feat, then just finish off with Barbarian afterwards.
7. Halsin (yup I also do all the other companions LOL) - Moon Druid lvl 2/Open Hand Monk lvl 10
Dude is a giant, I want him to punch people super hard with those tree trunk arms, it's THAT simple lol
I honestly wouldn't even bother with Druid levels if not for the fact it's so engrained into his character, but grabbing two levels to get the subclass allows for the bonus action wildshape which just provides some further versatility, and he gets a Bear shape regardless so might as well keep access to it. This is also where I might recommend sticking in a Tavern Brawler build, as I obviously want to focus on Str for this big man, plus it kind of makes sense if you forget about the actual name of the feat. He grew up in nature, is a mostly self taught druid to my understanding, so using the Tavern Brawler feat also kind of implies a degree of "self teaching" when it comes to unarmed striking, ya know? Open Hand is also just the best Monk subclass, Four Elements miiiiiight make more sense but not enough for me to not just use Open Hand.
Stat-wise I shift them around a lot, as they don't make much sense to me to begin with, keeping his Int low (he grew up in the wild even if he is a smart dude) and I drop his Cha (again grew up among animals, even if he is well spoken and kind it makes sense if his social skills are lacking), then focus on Str with a decent spread between Dex, Wis, and Con.
He also starts at a higher level so I grab 2 lvls in Druid right away then just rush down Monk afterwards.
8. Minthara - Vengeance Paladin lvl 2/War Cleric lvl 10
Here's the endgame Cleric for ya! lol
I have found it's super helpful to have a Cleric with lvl 5 spells in the later portions of the game, not necessary ofc but I personally wanted one and Shart was more of a Ranger with this setup, and this is a build I've always liked even in regular DnD.
You will ofc be forced to make her a Cleric of Lolth despite her having renounced Lolth, but if you know how Lolth works then it actually still makes sense. If Minthara is still upholding her oaths and actively in the midst of some chaotic shit, then OFC Lolth would continue to approve, no joke! Plus with how all female Lolthsworn are raised her being some degree of Cleric actually makes far more sense then being a full Paladin. If you're unaware, female Drow of Menzoberranzan ALL go to learn divine (cleric) magics in an elite school before they're allowed to really join their houses, it's actually a requirement that Minthara (being a Beanre) would not have been able to avoid.
The reason it works so well though is cause of smites and the War Domain. She'll have the high level spells for utility, damage, and healing, but she'll have access to more smites being mostly a full caster AND if you can use her War Priest bonus action attack it can also smite! With this build she's far more of a caster and support character then a smiting machine, but give her the auto criting tadpole power (since she has extra tadpoles anyways) and you can nuke something with this CLERIC lol
I personally swap her to sword and board and use a finesses weapon, so I can focus her stats on Dex and Wis, with Con secondary and I spread out her last three stats evenly, cause she is strong, charismatic, and smart, so I couldn't bring myself to dump any of them fully lol
Just like Halsin I always start her off with 2 lvls in Paladin then just jam through Cleric afterwards.
9. Jaheira - Spore Druid lvl 7/Champion Fighter lvl 5
This one in particular was specifically so I could keep her as a dual wielding combatant since that's always kind of ben her canonically preferred style.
I don't think this is an uncommon build at all, getting 5 levels in Fighter for extra attack then just jamming Spore Druid for all the damage and survivability, so I won't go into too much detail on it, but the reason I chose Champion was cause I wanted Lae'zel to be a Battle Master but also she's literally a champion of Baldur's Gate, it works fucking perfectly! lol Spores actually fit less well but hey, it's still druid and the build is super strong, so I'm not losing any sleep over it.
I mostly keep her stats the same, but I do put a bit more into Dex, usually drop Wis a bit and dump her Str to get Dex up, but that's about it and technically it could still work without any stat changes. I mean you could get the dual wielder feat on her then give her the rapier Wyll gets from Mizora when you save her, keep one of the Scimitars she starts with, and she'll then be attacking with her Wis entirely at that point, so that is also an option, I just like to keep the rapier on Wyll and not even bother with that feat for Jaheira.
10 Minsc - Hunter Ranger lvl 4/Wildheart Barbarian lvl 8
This one should be obvious, ngl. He's already known as a Ranger, loves animals, is a Rashaman berserker, he even gets his own custom Barb screams done by Matt Mercer (unlike Halsin, disappointingly enough). There should be no question why this combo works for him lol
Make sure to take Colossus Slayer as a Hunter, then go Bear Barbarian, give him a big two handed weapon, and you've now got one of the heaviest hitting and tankiest combos in the game, straight up. He has very little versatility, that's the main downside, he pretty much just rages, run him in, and attack shit, but even THAT fits Minsc perfectly.
For his stats I pretty much just swap his Str and Dex, maybe put a bit of his Wis into his Dex as well to hit that comfortable 14 and give him medium armor instead of using his unarmored defense, but this is ofc flexible. At the time you get him as well you should be able to just fully build him to lvl 12, maybe 10 or 11 if you rush to him, so order of levels doesn't really matter.
BUT THERE IT IS! All done, hope someone out there finds this useful or at least interesting, and thanks to anyone who read the whole thing, I know it was a lot lol
As a final note, I'm not interested in arguing how good or accurate any of these are, or of other options (like Shadow Monk/Cleric Shart, for example, but my Tav is a Shadow Monk/Assassin so didn't want that to overlap), like I said I'm on my 7th playthrough and I haven't done their standard classes and subclasses since my very first run and I've always tried to keep stuff that fit them accurately, this is just the current one I'm using and so far has been one of the most fun "load outs" lol
If you give any of them a try then I sincerely hope you enjoy it :D

2024.05.15 18:03 KamchatkasRevenge Out of Cruel Space Side Story: Of Dog, Volpir, and Man - Bk 6 Ch 18

The next day finds the military part of the Bridger family waiting in one of the larger cargo bays. Paladin company and Shark Platoon are on hand, all in full power armor except for Makula, with the exception of Jaruna who's standing next to Jerry in a family uniform with her shotgun and sword slung over her back. Jerry had also elected for a dress uniform today, though he'd paired it with a 'ceremonial' curaiss that could still take a hit from a plasma cannon or two... and concealed a small shield generator. Mixed with his cloak and the Crimsonhewer war ax on his belt, Jerry thought he looked every bit the barbarian warlord... if a bit too clean cut for a Hollywood depiction of such.
The situation reminded Jerry of a similar reception back on Serbow... but this one was a bit less ceremonial and a bit more... dynamic. They didn't have any formal bonds with Clan Karchara, or their Khan, Komugai. So as a meeting of two new to each other factions, things could get... exciting. Which considering they were talking about Cannidor meant that things could potentially get very violent, very quickly.
They usually didn't. Not any more. Yet... it never helped to play it safe, even with a clan that had a decent reputation like the Karchara. More cut throat clans had been heard to disguise themselves for meetings like this for meetings so they could ambush their targets after all. Plus as always, there was tradition to observe and satisfy. Tradition which could be best summarized as 'Offer one hand, but arm the other.'. The Cannidor were ready to fight a war naked among any people but their own. They were beyond dangerous. So an armed society wasn't so much a polite society as the unarmed were likely mentally infirm, and to be politely left to their own devices.
A sharp whistle from the 1MC draws Jerry from his thoughts.
"Now hear this! The Clan Karchara envoy is arriving!"
The Karchara drop ship slides into view out of the black and makes it's way towards the docking day with all the leisurely grace of a terrestrial shark swimming towards a coral reef. Whoever's piloting it is clearly a hot hand on the stick because the ship moves as smooth as anything Jerry had ever seen out of Cruel Space, extending it's landing gear and coming to a halt with nary a hint of a bounce in it's suspension and shock absorbing gear.
"Hmmm. The Karchara..." Jaruna rumbles. "An interesting contact in Cannidor space to be sure. So to recap what we talked about, they're somewhat on and off again allies of my old clan. Decent types for the most part. No idea who the Khan is now, and a little searching online didn't turn anything up. Don't think the intelligence weasels had anything either. Save that they've been having some internal structural changes. Seized a new planet too, lighting raid, unconventional tactics, whatever that means. Gives them complete control of... ten decently populated and industrialized star systems I think. They're firmly in the middle of the power band for the Khans by that measurement, exact position depends on the number of warriors under arms they can bring to the Golden Khan's muster."
"Right. Well. Guess we'll have to see what Khan Karchara wants to chat about, and hear about this plan of hers."
The Karchara drop ship settles onto it's landing gear, and it's flight crew leaves the engines running. Tradition. You never knew if a reception was actually friendly after all, and it was also a mark of respect for the hosts. You might be asked to fuck off after all.
The forward assault ramp drops, and the honor guard warriors of the Khan march out, in power armor, but with their helmets off, fanning out to cover their leader. The lack of helmets was very much a declaration of intent, the human equivalent of open palms for a Cannidor in power armor.
Jaruna's brow instantly furrows as she scans the faces of the honor guard.
"...Wait. I know some of those girls. One of my aunts, Norkath is there on the left, and that's... but that."
Jerry can hear Jaruna's brain crunching that information.
"...Komugai. You said the Khan's name was Komugai? Not Jelvuna?"
"Definently Komugai."
"...Unless she changed her name... but then would Aunt Norkath join the Karchara proper without her...?"
Jaruna mutters to herself, clearly trying to puzzle whatever's eating at her out, when the sound of heavy boots on the assault ramp sound, and an utterly massive Cannidor woman starts to come into view. She cuts an imposing presence. Her uniform not too far off from Jerry's, a mix of barbarian warlord and modern dress uniform. The massive war ax over her shoulder tipping the scales on the barbarian - modern officer scale towards barbarian. It was easy to miss her other various weapons in the sheer scale of her. Her stark white fur, the three brutal scars across her muzzle, and another two over her left eye, which had a cybernetic replacement.
Khan Karchara stands for a moment, surveying the room silently... and before anyone can say anything, Jaruna breaks the silence;
"...Mom?"
Khan Karchara cuts loose with a booming laugh that reminds Jerry of Khan Isuras, and if this is indeed Jaruna's mother, he can immediately see exactly why the two women cut palms and swore sisterhood. He wouldn't be hard pressed to believe they were actual sisters.
"Heh. Glad to see all that time on Centris hasn't dulled your powers of observation! Always said you were a sharp one."
There's no sarcasm there, a little maternal teasing perhaps, but she's not mocking Jaruna. Anyone with eyes can tell Khan Karchara is damn proud of her child.
"And this'd be my son in law... bit small but hell just from your first date with my little girl I know you're a first class head kicker, plus you already gave me four grandbabies to spoil! Hahah. I suppose these bigguns here are the older girls? I... say. I thought there was three of you."
Karchara points at Makula.
"You're a bit old to be Hippolyta considering she was born a couple weeks ago. Who are you, girl?"
"Makula Sa'Bridger, I was adopted a few days ago. Honored Matron."
Karchara grins, her numerous teeth gleaming in the light of the hangar.
"Matron? Not Khan?"
"You are my mother's mother, standing in my family's clan hold. To refer to your title by right of blood is most appropriate."
Another bark of laughter.
"Well drilled and whip smart I see. You know the ways of our kind well, granddaughter." Karchara smirks, looking smug before turning to her honor guard.
"See girls? Five now! Haha! What a stud of a bull!"
Khan Karchara turns back to Jerry and Jaruna.
"Ah but I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's get the formal bit done so we can go jaw a bit and then hopefully I can visit with my eldest daughter, my son in law and these fine young ladies."
She quickly shifts her body a bit, drawing herself up to her full, imposing twelve foot height.
"I am Komugai, Khan of Karchara. I come to broker peace and fellowship between our clans, to join them in a bond of steel that will stand the sword storm for all time."
Jerry nods slowly. More than they'd expected actually. That was laying out intent to conduct some very, very serious negotiations.
"I, Jeremiah, Khan of Bridger, Admiral of this fleet, lord of these proud warriors before you, bid you welcome, Komugai of Karchara, bring your banner among ours, that they might rest together while we discuss the business of peace, and of wars yet to come."
"Well spoken indeed... and the steel in your eyes." Komugai nods slowly. "Yes, I see what you see in him, Jaruna, well past his considerable combat skills. All the better my dear son-in-law that you have already begun working on my grand design... but come, let us dismiss our warriors that they might go and eat, drink and enjoy themselves. We need only you, Jaruna, and perhaps my granddaughters for this business, so that they might learn the ways of leadership."
"I think we can accommodate that." Jerry says before turning and pulling the ax off of his belt and raising it high, an ancient Cannidor signal for attention from the leader of a warband to their warriors.
"Warriors, we walk with friends, show them to the promenade, that they might share our table while we discuss business."
Jerry and Jaruna guide Komugai to the conference room they'd prepared, while Joan and the girls quickly hustle to get their armor stowed and get their tails to the same spot. None of them wanted to miss a minute of this!
Still, the tension in the room's fairly heavy when the door closes, and Jaruna turns on her mother.
"Alright. We got a couple minutes till the girls get up here. What the hell, mom? You changed your name? Took over the Karchara? What the heck is going on?"
Komugai settles herself in a Cannidor scale chair, grinning all the while.
"You should be happier, daughter. This was inspired by you after all. When you left our band. Left the old clan... I knew you were right. We won't speak of that business, but we were obligated... and I should have been brave enough to refuse, but I lacked the standing... and perhaps the courage. So I did what any good Khan worth her blades would do and crammed it down their throats. Broke that clan, took them in, then subsumed the Karchara with my new band. They've got the older name, so I became Khan Karchara instead of remaining Khan Jormuntide. Your Aunt's got the title now. I'd offer it to you, but you've got your own clan now."
"So Jormuntide remains at least." Jaruna shuts her eyes for a second and lets out a slow breath. "You really did all this because of my idealistic and childish temper tantrum nearly a century ago?"
"Hardly childish. Idealistic? Absolutely. There's something to be said for actually trying to live up to our own ideals though. Especially as warriors. However, that is personal business, and we have business to discuss for the Undaunted first."
Komugai turns to face Jerry square on.
"Admiral Bridger, I'm prepared to offer two things to the Undaunted. One. I want to ally myself and my clan formally with the Undaunted. Second, I prepared to gift an entire star system to the same from my holdings. It is populated, but sparsely across three habitable worlds. Ripe for ongoing colonization and industrialization. To keep things fair, people within my clans will be given a chance to move to or from as they please if for some reason they don't wish for Undaunted citizenship. The Undaunted will then have the standing to select a Khan for your Cannidor population, both in Cannidor space, and Undaunted wide. A non voting position at first, but as the clan grows you will achieve that status quickly I believe."
Jerry stops dead. "...Did you just offer us a star system with three habitable worlds?"
"Yes."
"...Okay, I'm on board, but why?"
"Simply put, the worlds are marginal. They need investment. They need settlers. You need worlds. A strong alliance with humanity... and being the first Cannidor clan to extend that hand formally, even having your realm within my space... only benefits me. As I grow my own territory I might even cede another system to the Undaunted. If the Undaunted Khan helps me in those battles I damn sure will." Komugai chuckles. "We'll see how many Khans are stupid enough to try to fight me in the next few decades of course. The other thing I'm trading on is Undaunted naval power. As you just learned, we don't really do navies. I want a professional navy, the Undaunted have agreed to help me get it... and help secure my space once we secure them my end of the bargain, that, Admiral, is where you come in."
Jerry arches an eyebrow and gestures for Komugai to continue.
"Simply put, you need to do what you just did with that border bandit Khan Irgalas, but across Cannidor space. This isn't a done deal. It's up to the Grand Council and I'm but one vote. You already have an in with some of the other Khans, and the Undaunted are doing business with Cannid Solutions. That's an excellent start, and you just made a stellar formal introduction of yourself to Cannidor space. A flawless orbital and ground fight like that'll make sure word gets around that the Undaunted are here... and as dangerous as their rep says they are. I got a little list of the other movers and shakers you need to press the flesh with to win over key parts of the council. You make the rounds, and I'll be doing the same on my end. We meet on Canis Prime for the council meeting, and then we either have a huge brawl to make our point or toast victory with some top quality booze."
"You make it sound pretty simple." Jerry says, clearly not believing there's all there is to it.
Komugai shrugs. "It is simple in its concept. Pressing the flesh and winning the various Khans over won't be. They'll all have their little tests and challenges for you to get the measure of both humans and the Undaunted. We've seen a lot on the trivid as a species. A lot of us have heard stuff in the news or from kin. This is your chance to just straight up show people who you are and what you're about. Because now you're here, and therefore 'real'. If that makes any sense. Cannidor don't really care much about shit happening on the other half of the galactic disk. Undaunted, Humans, being here? Now? Now people will really start paying attention besides idly seeing if there's some interesting amateur porn or more combat footage available."
The Khan points over at Joan, Boudicca, Khutulun and Makula. "These four will likely be very critical to the warrior house's opinion of you... your next generation of warriors, your daughters. How are they treated? How are they trained? What's their mettle like? If they're strong, and worthy, you will impress the khans in a very good way. If my granddaughters are found wanting, they'd question a great many things... and could cause trouble when the Grand Council meets to discuss my little proposal, among other orders of business."
Jerry looks over at Joan and the girls, all four of them are suddenly looking very tense, especially Makula. "I have every confidence in all of my daughters to deal with anything the Khans can throw at them. Even Hippolyta if a trial suited for an infant is on hand."
That gets a chuckle from the girls, relaxing them a hair.
"Still. We'll burn that bridge when we get there. No sense borrowing trouble that hasn't come yet."
Komugai nods. "Wise words. Your diplomats have already approved this plan on their end, they'll send you the itinerary and all the fussy details shortly. Unless you have other questions for me?"
"I've heard there's a grand council of patriarchs too. Would getting in good with them help?"
That gets a full on shrug from the massive warrior woman. "Yes? I mean. Probably. No good way to arrange that though beyond asking my hubby, and I have. He said their council will handle things if it's deemed appropriate, and I don't need to fuss about it too much, and I know a polite way to be asked to fuck off when I hear one... so keep your head on a swivel on that one Jerry, I'm sure the patriarchs are well aware of the Undaunted... and are looking at a possible way to make warriors out of their sons without making their wives piss their frilly panties."
The khan's brilliant white teeth glitter in the room. "Back when we were the more traditional kind of savages back on our homeworld, the bulls did a lot of the leading and the fighting on an individual basis. Women however have always fought the wars. As we grew as a species, developed power armor, space travel, had our population bloom, a bull fighting another in single combat became less practical, and the other traditional male roles of shaman, guide, and brain trust came to the forefront. The council of patriarchs is an old body Jerry. Pre space flight. One of our first forms of international diplomacy between the khans. The matriarchs hold all the power... but when the council of patriarchs speaks, people know to shut up and pay attention."
Jerry nods slowly. Seemed like he'd just have to wait and see... and make sure he made a good impression when the opportunity presented itself.
"Well. I think that concludes everything we need to talk about professionally. Unless you have something else Khan Karchara?"
"Aww, just call me Mama like my big fuzz ball over here used to when we're not working! I've heard a bit about this little fortress of yours, could you all give me the tour? I'd like a chance to talk to all my new granddaughters after all."
Jerry shrugs. "Sure, we'll head up to the Den for a bit, then head down to the promenade to join the girls for some drinks and skewers. Our Cannidor eatery's got the best skewers in wild space whenever we're there."
"Don't I believe it, get to try some more Earth meats too! Bought a little sampler pack from a friend and good goddess, if you start exporting that bacon stuff in bulk, I'm going to invest in a chain of gyms, because there's going to be a lot of girls fighting to keep their girlish figures!"

2024.05.15 17:11 fortuneandfameinc How to deal with death... That isn't mine...

Back when I first started playing in around 2005, a friend, we will call him Martoth, because that is his in game name since then, joined me for our first adventure into Azeroth. We learned the game together and he kept playing long after I hung up the spurs. He was a solid paladin healer and healed on a shammy as well. I'm sure he has leveled most classes and done a majority of the end game raids through the years. He is an excellent healer. Top notch.
I brought him back to join us in hardcore. We were in our 40s and before we knew it, he had caught up. I mean sure, he took the trip back to elwynn 4 times in his first weekend, but martoth the 5th was our level within a week. Then he died while soloing. Pulled too many turtles in shimmering and went down. He was tired.
No problem. Marathon the 6th caught up to us again at level 52. He found edge masters and made a cool 2k gold. He kitted martoth the 6th to the 9s... top level profs, massive gear boosts, every consumable.
One happy Saturday morning, he decided to grind timbermaw rep in felwood. Got some funky respawns, goes down... with 700g in his back pocket...
Every time he dies he gets defensive and says he was fine, he was fine. All of his friends try and encourage him to change his behaviour. He says of course of course.
So out comes martoth the 7th. He still has some bank so he's reasonably geared. Hits 18, all his friends talk about trying to do DM that night. He gets working to make 19 before it gets late. We're all on comms. Then we hear, I'm going to die, I'm going to die...
He was clearing dead mines trash to mine... of course, we also hear 'I was fine, I was fine.'...
I know I can't change his behaviour, we've tried and tried. But what I can't get over is how frustrated I keep getting at deaths that would have been so easily avoided. I want to play with my old friend, and I really want my awesome pocket healer (no martoth has ever died in a dungeon). But I can't come to grips with my own crushing defeat when this keeps happening. Again and again.
I need a grief counselor or something (jk obviously). I know I have no control over the situation, but it keeps getting me in the guts every time I log on and he's 20 levels lower than the last time I logged on.

2024.05.15 15:45 tangytablet Kira Kira Pretty Cure A La Mode Villain Rewrite

I like Kira Kira a lot, but the villains were just one of the things I was not a fan of for the season. So I thought maybe trying to rewrite some of them so they better fit the narrative a little more theme-wise while still retaining some of the good things about them in their original incarnations:

Memory Transcription Subject: Elder Researcher Slira of the Vyr Exploration Initiative
Date [standardised Vyr time]: Day 102/321, Year 110
I remembered when they drilled to the top of Rime.I had been studying to be a computer engineer at the time, only a single course away from graduating. My home city of Frozen Perch had been chosen for the project, something that no local really paid any mind to. Almost no one believed there was anything to find within Rime’s depths, for she didn’t have any of the gifts her Sisters did. There was no ore or soil like Stone had, no warmth or light like Glow’s magma. Even Abyss held corrupted treasures of Tide’s life which members of her Second and Third Church used with enthusiasm to survive and thrive in places were the very water would crush you to nothing.
We all knew they’d give up after drilling up for a few kilometres and Vyrkind would be content that nothing lay above our heads up Rime’s endless ice, that reality was only so big and that we had explored almost everything that exists besides for some patches within the dark deeps.
I admit, I didn’t have much passion for my career of choice. I’d likely end up as a system admin somewhere, managing networks and improving what we already had, never creating anything new because we already built everything we needed.Born too late to explore the world…
When the engineers working on the drill reported that the ice was thinning, that they were getting faint signals from beyond… curiosity and passion ignited in my soul, in the soul of nearly every vyr that lived and breathed. The drilling project went from a boring little science project only a choice few geologists and industrialists held any hope for to a global event which caught the eye of all vyrkind.
I remember lying in my nest, surrounded by pillows and swaddled in blankets while my eyes were glued to a livestream of drill’s progress. My tail was playing with a tassel of a stuffed toy, which if I remembered rightly was modelled after my first pet, a grumpy but sweet crab named Admiral Cookpot.I remember the smell of burnt squid, because my father had been cooking a meal at the time and got distracted by world events, same as me. The only sound in my room was the tideheater’s propeller whirring softly.
I was too scared to breathe, worried that if I was too loud I’d scare away the most interesting thing that had ever happened in my entire life. And when the drill finally pierced the top layer of Rime I and every Vyr caught our first sight of a world beyond our little planet. The sky a black void so unlike that of Abyss, my eyes filled with the light of thousands, millions of…
Stars.
A luminous field as beautiful as any glittering reef or magma vent, uncountable jewels and embers. I stared at them for over an hour, until the blazing personification of Glow herself arose from beneath the horizon, which I’d later learn… no, discover was our own personal star.
I knew what I’d dedicate my life to then and there. My life’s mission would be to uncover the secrets of this strange new realm beyond Rime, which scientists named and priests baptised as Space.
-][-
It has been many rotations around our star (now named Beacon) since I was a young college student. I got a degree in physics and with my computer simulations I managed to not only chart the movement of celestial bodies, but predict their movements as surely as the currents. I hadn’t intended to become one of the founding mothers of the field of Astrophysics but I was more than happy to lead the charge, to explore this new frontier as thoroughly as possible.
Now I was being invited to a meeting of some of the most important people in my country, perhaps of vyrkind. Sure, I had spoken to some of them before, but only over text or video chat. Only ever about theories and possibilities.
Now it would be in a physical location, all in one big room, still about theories but now much more tangible, life altering things. And I wasn’t going to be an advisor or a consultant. Just as some people were seen as leaders of armies, planners of cities or managing agricultural regions, I was being invited as our foremost expert on… Space.
It was funny and terrifying how one can wake up one morning and suddenly realise you are a world leader, responsible for guiding the fates of every creature you or anyone else had ever met.
As scared and nervous as I was, this was no time for imposter syndrome. I was one of the oldest, most experienced astrophysicists on the planet. Of course I was, I helped invent it dammit! I was still as passionate about Space as the day I started, because it was the first time we realised what a day was. I had worked with members of fields related to mine for so long I was practically an expert at those too, including engineering. There is no one more qualified to do this than I, Elder Researcher Slira! Vyrkind needed me!

Great, now I also feel nervous about being too arrogant. Still, I managed to clear some of my self-doubt and packed my bags. I had an elevator to catch.
-][-
Castle Yarshu was absolutely filled with people, busier than I’ve ever seen it before. Normally it’s just a museum, filled with old relics from the time of the last Forge Lords. Technically it’s owned by the Ka’lai Militia though and their leader has made sure to keep it well renovated. It is that very leader, General Taraksus, that has invited us all to the Castle’s massive Roundhall, filled with trophies and spoils of conquests that exist only in memory. The hall’s centre stage was covered in posts, perches and seats for the over one hundred representatives the General had invited, with boxy camera drones jetting here and there to capture the discussion for all to see.Around the hall Vyr crowded and swarmed to get a look at us, even clinging to the pillars and ceiling to see the “action”. The castle and our meeting was open to the public after all, and anyone could enter as long as occupancy allowed and they brought nothing dangerous with them besides their claws and fangs.
From my perch I spy Taraksus sitting atop the old Forge Lord’s throne, on its headrest to be precise, discussing something with a fellow general curled up on the armrest and an aide lying at the foot. The seat itself was filled with a sponge-stuffed dummy dressed to fit any monarch, albeit with a sign around its neck with a slur word written on it in a language few speak anymore.
Taraksus themself wasn’t too impressive a sight, well below the size average for females and decently above it for males. Their only ornamentation was a black stripe painted over his head to create a striking contrast as it went over their eyes, and a chain which held a few dozen metal strips, each with the name of a fallen comrade written on it. Or so I hear.
Taraksus ends his conversation and takes up a spear from a guard, the rear of which he uses to stamp the ground.
“Pipe down you lot! I’m calling this meeting to order!” Their voice pierced through the cacophony with a clarity that surprised me.
“As ridiculous as it feels to say, we’ve been contacted by aliens. You all saw the translation broadcasted live from our friends over at the VEI. Suffice to say the contents of their message to us is… concerning. I’ve already forwarded recommendations to our R&D sectors to start working on designs for military spacecraft. Certainly not something I or most anyone else here thought or hoped would ever be needed. I’m hoping that the consensus we reach here will keep that true. Before any of that however I call upon one of the most prominent members of the aforementioned VEI, Elder Slira, to clue us in on the nature of what we face and go over her team’s conclusions.”
I quickly check the notes on my portable computer which my assistant Neeran had so kindly organised for me before erecting myself on my perch.
I could feel everyone’s eyes on me, coupled with the near oppressive silence. I took a steady breath, trying to gather my courage. “You can do it Slira!” echoed a voice from the back of the hall. The chuckles that followed was evidence enough that I hadn’t imagined it, and I felt some of my fears dissipate.
“Greetings, vyr from across the world. I’ll jump right to the meat of the issue and start with an analysis of the ‘Sivkit’ that spoke to us. One of the most startling discoveries we uncovered in our investigation was the incredibly high possibility of them breathing… gas.”
I spotted the ears of more than a few vyr shoot up in shock, including those of the stout administrator of the Vrental Commune’s heartlands, Ireni.
Gasbreathers? Surely such a thing is not possible?”
“The footage clearly indicates a lack of liquid, and the sivkit’s chest is clearly contracting and expanding in a manner that indicates breathing. We could be wrong, but likely we are looking at an organism that defies our current understanding of how complex life can develop.”
I typed away at my computer, bringing up my second point.
“Next we have their next statement, something about us being Arxur…”
A delegate I do not recognise raises a claw.
“Do we know who these Arxur are? The Sivkit seemed ready to bolt at the idea of them.”
“We currently have no information on the Arxur. All we can extrapolate is that they are another sapient alien species, that we resemble them somewhat except for our eyes and that they represent a clear threat to the Sivkit. Also, for whatever reason, the sivkit mistook us for a prey species because our eyes are on the side of our heads…”

“That’s… no, I don't have a way to soften that, that’s stupid as shit.”
“It’s… not scientifically correct, no. But it made them mistake us for fellow kindred among the stars, their captain even going so far to gift us translator technology.”
“Was it a mistake?” Taraksus asks, seemingly in thought. “I mean clearly they mistook us for something we are not, but is it impossible for us to be kindred?”
I understood his question, and sadly had no real answer.
“I don’t know General. The kind of friendship you describe is a two-way street, and if they are not willing then there is nothing we can do. But that does not mean we can’t do anything about it. Diplomat Zhara, your turn.”
A vyr across the stage from me straightens herself. Her body is wrapped in colourful fabrics and her various bits of jewellery show a clear love of ornamentation and precious stones.
“Thank you Elder. The Sivkit Captain promised to return at a time less than [3 weeks] away. Irrelevant of any bigger picture, he seems to care mostly about establishing relations with us and getting access to the deposits on our planetary neighbour Turqo. Whether for personal wealth or aiding his kin, who’s to say. He seems to assume we are part of a larger civilisation, likely unable to sense us underneath all the ice and mistaking our surface city for some kind of local outpost. Whatever the case may be, our diplomatic strategy is simple: lie through our fangs and trade metal.”
An uneasy murmur fills the hall.
“I know, lying may come back to bite us. But we need to be cautious, we know nothing about these aliens and if pretending to be a larger civilisation of peaceful herbivores will put them at ease then so be it. In addition my friends in the industrial sector tell me we don’t have any need for such a vast amount of heavy metals, so mining the deposit and trading the resources to the Sivkit for what they have in abundance seems good business. It will also help further the ‘small mining outpost’ facade and aid us in getting more information about who these ‘meat-eating humans’ are.”
“Excellent! We’re right on time!”
A gasp passes through the crowd. My eyes dart around and my ears swivel every which way, trying to identify the source of the shout. The crowd of onlookers to my left were making way, clearly shocked at… some new arrivals? What under Rime…?
Two vyr had entered the hall.
The first was a small male, their body wiry and covered in scars. Even the tip of their flat tale had a V-shaped chunk cut out of it. A sash of black cloth covered in white pictograms was wrapped around his chest, and attached to the sash was a broad, bladed weapon almost comically large for him. The second was a rather average female, still almost twice the size of the male. Black robes and a hood hid her form, though I noticed a pair of silver reading glasses sitting on her snout and a… by Glow, was that a fucking tome? An actual book, with thick kelp-fibre pages and bound in Nesis bark.
My brain almost refused to recognise the two, but finally sense overruled logic. The male was Krattron, and the female was Kahltrak. The highest authorities of the Second and Third Churches of the Abyss respectively.
Krattron swam up to the stage, eyes brimming with what I could only describe as maniacal glee.
“Greetings, children of Vyrkind! When do we set out to hunt the demons of Void?”
Kahltrak follows shortly behind. I would have been able to hear her sigh from the surface.
“Hello delegates. We’ve come to pledge our aid, and to discuss how we shall be dealing with our enemies.”

2024.05.15 10:53 RatBarrage Some Notes on The Tale of the Student and His Son

First time reader of Wolfe and I'm having an amazing time working my way through shadow and claw. I had to read this chapter a couple times to try and grasp it; it's extremely dense. I'm still finishing Claw of the Concilliator so my thoughts may change. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
The Tale of the Student and His Son Analysis
“Once, upon the margin of the unpastured sea, there stood a city of pale towers.”
“In it dwelt the wise. Now that city had both law and curse.”
“The law was this: That for all who dwelt there, life held but two paths: they might rise among the wise and walk clad with hoods of myriad colors, or they must leave the city and go into the friendless world.”
“Now one there was who had studied long all the magic known in the city, which was most of the magic known in the world”
“And he grew near the time at which he must choose a path. In high summer, when flowers with yellow and careless heads thrust even from the dark walls overlooking the sea.”
“How may I - even I who know nothing - have a place among the wise of the city? For I wish to study spells that are not sacred all my days, and not go into the friendless world to dig and carry for bread”
“ Do you recall how, when you were hardly more than a boy, I taught you the art by which we flesh sons from dream stuff? How skillful you were in these days, surpassing all the others! Go now, and flesh such a son, and I will show it to the hooded ones, and you will be as we.”
“Winter came stalking into the land from his frozen capital, where the sun rolls along the edge of the world like a trumpery gilded ball and the fires that flow between the stars and Urth kindle the sky. His touch turned the waves to steel, and the city of the magicians welcomed him, hanging banners of ice from its balconies and heaping its roofs with glaces of snow.”
“In spring, the most beautiful maidens of the city, the daughters of the magicians, were clothed in green; and while the soft winds of spring teased their golden hair, they walked unshod through the portal of the city, and down the narrow path that led to the quay, and boarded the black-sailed ship that waited them. And because of their golden hair, and their gowns of green faille, and because it seemed to the magicians that they were reaped like grain, they were called Corn Maidens.”
“Looking from his window saw the maidens filing by, he set aside all his books and began to draw such figures as no man had ever seen, and to write in many languages, as his master had taught him aforetime.”
“ At first it seemed to him that all the skill his master had taught him of old had deserted him, for from the first light to the moonlight he was alone in his chambers save for the moth that fluttered sometimes to show the insignia of Death at his undaunted candle flame.
“Then there crept into his dreams another; and he, knowing who that other was, welcomed him, though the dreams were fleeting and soon forgotten.”
“Then the student dared turn himself where he sat, and he saw standing before him a youth haughty of port, wide of shoulder, and mighty of thew. Command was in his firm mouth, knowing wit in his bright eyes, and courage in all his face. Upon his brow sat that crown that is invisible to every eye, but can be seen even by the blind; the crown beyond price that draws brave men to a paladin, and makes weak men brave.
“Often I have seen, like a green serpent called by the notes of a pipe, a column of green slip down the cliff below our city to the quay.”
“At this the young man’s eye flashed, and he demanded: ‘Who is this ogre, and what form has he, and where does he dwell?’”
“His name no man knows, for no man can approach near enough…His harbor is an isle to the west, where a channel with many a twist and bend, dividing and redividing, reaches far inland. It is on the isle, so my lore teaches me, that the Corn Maidens are made to dwell; and there he rides at anchor in the midst of them, turning his eye ever to left and right to watch them in their despair.”
“For I am Noctua, the daughter of Night, and the daughter too of him whom you have come to slay…For though he did not know why, being of the stuff of dreams he was drawn to her; and she, who eyes held starlight, to him…At this the princess took pity on him, for all who have the stuff of dreams about them seem fair in some degree at least to the daughters of the night, and he fairest of all.
“At length Night came, and they saw her striding from islet to islet with her bats about her shoulders and her dire wolves dogging her steps. No more than an easy carronade shot from their anchorage she seemed, yet they all observed that she passed not before Hesperus or even Sirius; but they before her. For a moment only she turned her face toward them, and none could be certain what her look conveyed. But all of them wondered if indeed the ogre had taken her without her will as her daughter had said; and if so, if she had not lost the resentment she might be imagined to have felt.”
“In ancient times, so it is said, a tattered child, the daughter of a fisherman, found on the sand a stoppered flask, and by breaking the seal and drawing forth the cork became queen from ice to ice. Just so it seemed, an elemental being, strong with the strength of the forging of creation, debouched from the tall smokestacks of their ship, tumbling over himself in dark joy and growing with a rush, as the wind comes.”
“Then he strode to the rail and looked down; but with such an expression that no one, not even the most brave, dared to look at him. When he lifted his eyes at last, his face was set and grim and with no word to any man he took himself to his cabin and barred the door.”
“But on the morning of the third day, the young man fleshed from dreams came out of his cabin and began to walk up and down the deck as he was wont to do”
“At this he looked up into the very vault of the firmament. And some thought he prayed, and some that he sought to restrain the anger he felt against them, and some only that he hoped to gain inspiration there. But so long did he stare that they waxed afraid, even as they had when he had peered into the water, and one or two began to creep away. Then he said to them: “Behold! Do you not see the sea birds? From every corner of the sky they stream. Follow them.”
“None of them ever forgot that night”
“Certain of the Corn Maidens wed those princes who, having spent years so long enchanted that they are loath to leave that life (and have in that time learned much of gramary), build palaces on lily pads and are seldom seen by men.”
“And when he beheld their dark sails, smutted by the burning tar that had blinded their enemy, he believed them blackened in mourning for the young man, and he threw himself down, and so perished. For no man lives long when his dreams are dead.”

2024.05.15 09:56 InsaneComicBooker Wizards...Nine? A proposal

UNMARKED SPOILERS BELOW, I will sadly go into spoiler territorry so often the post would look like a bad SCP Foundation article if I tried to black out every single one.
First thing I thought upon finding out about the Wizard Three in Sigil was to notice an opportunitty to include more iconic characters. As we learned more about their role I noticed several complaints about them. Like, "why are we having epic level NPCs relegating the work to mid-level party"? Or "isn't Tasha evil? What is she doing here?" Or "how the hell did Kas fool Tasha, who knows Mordekainen very well?". And so an idea to fix these issues all at once presented itself to me.
In this version of adventure, the PCs are summonned not by Wizard Three, but Wizard Nine. Nine iconic, high-level wizards or other magic users from across D&D worlds or even beyond. They were all summonned to Sigil, to each tap into one of Outer Planes of appriopriate aligment and channel that power into Wish, so the Will of the entire multiverse wishes of Vecna's death. You could even call it something like "Wish of All", make it some greatest magic avialable, maybe something you can only cast from Sigil. Once it fails, the wizards realize it means one of them must not be who they claim, but an imposter misaligned with their designated plane, possibly an agent of Vecna. So they immediatelly lock themselves in Sanctuary - only PCs can enter and leave because they weren't in the room during the casting. And every time they return with next piece of the Rod, they find Wizards in most disfunctional game of Among Us ever, often probably erupting into violence - this is nine geniuses working AGAINST each other as everyone suspects everyone. Obviously all these people are warded against all common means of discovering an impostor - Zone of Truth, mind-reading, etc - because you don't get to be this powerful of a Wizard without guarding all your secrets safer than national treasures.
Now, you could keep the original reveal, where Mordekainen is the imposter. If you do, I would advocate against bringing any magic users who know him, like Tasha, Elminster, Storm Silverhand or Dalamar the Dark. If you decide to change the imposter's identity, you can happily bring in some of them, but I would avoid those who know each other (so if you want Elminster, then no Mordekainen or Dalamar).
Evil characters can work with this group because of several reasons, which they should be open about. They may vary from "You think I don't realize Vecna is going to screw ME over alongside everyone else", through "uppity gods need to be put in their place, especially this one" to "I would love what the guy is promising to do to all creation, but I'm not bending my knee to NOBODY!".
Below is a list of proposed characters to use from as many worlds I could think of. I will be comign back to this post to add more names and more worlds with further research, potentially going even beyond strictly D&D settings. You ca drop your own suggestions, I will happily add them to the list with next edit. All requirements are that the character is able to cast 9th level spells, if you have any notes for potential DM willing to use them, please provide them as well.
Eberron - I noticed most of suggestions for Eberron are of evil variety, due to the setting's lack of high-level heroic NPCs (with two exceptions that cannot leave their seats of power), but we'll work with what we have
Exandria (Critical Role) - I noticed most Exandria characters don't reach this high level - even Circle of Brass from Calamity were level 15. However, I found two options to provide a bit of fanservice for any critters at your table, both Chaotic Good:
Krynn (Dragonlance)
Magic the Gathering - there are many worlds in this franchise, but they're often very shallow, so I will group this stuff together.
Mystara - one of my beloved classic worlds, poses an issue because it never conformed to classic 9-types aligment, isntead opting for lawful (defined as "altruistic") and chaotic ("selfish"). A rare exception, 2e book Glantri: Kingdom of Magic, was a big help here.
Oearth (Greyhawk)
Toril (Forgotten Realms)
Other - here I will put characters who somehow seem the only candidates from their respective worlds.
Domains of Dread (Ravenloft) - I put this one last because of unique use we could have out of Domaind of Dread in this campaign. You see, we know that characterstrapped in Demiplane of Dread cannot leave that easily, they need Dark Powers' permission. And Dark Powers are backing up Kas. In the comments u/Zahariel pointed out if wizards realize there is an imposter among them, Kas would fail all tests an archmage would easily pass. I have also seen multiple complaints how both main antagonists of this campaign - Vecna nad Kas - are absent from most of it, with many ideas being thrown around about having Kas as an active rival that competes for pieces of the Rod. It occured to me that he may play that role, while we still have an impostor - another character trapped in Demiplane of Dread could be working with Kas and the Dark Powers in exchange for their freedom. This way we could even allow PCs to sherlock holmes who the traitor is between collecting different pieces of the Rod, and still can have Kas show up with hordes of monsters to steal the Rod later. All that matters is they do not impersonate a character of the same aligment and wield strong magic on their own. Here are some candidates for this role:
That's for now, but rest assured, I shall be returning to this post to update it with more characters, potentially more campaign worlds even. Your suggestions whom to add are always welcome.
