Working on an essay comparing the two and looking for feedback / suggestions. Really needs a few waves of editing and isn't finished but I'm pretty happy with how the last two hours of work turned out.
Again this is a ROUGH ROUGH ROUGH draft compiled from several notes.
Humanity and Nature: An Analysis and Reflection on The Duality Scavenger’s Reign

**Hollow:**

Scavenger’s Reign showcases how humans, when altering an ecosystem, can become dangerous parasites—an invasive species that disrupts the natural balance developed through millennia of evolution. Humans pose significant dangers to new ecosystems through various activities and behaviors that upset natural balances and lead to adverse environmental impacts. Even without technology and resources, humans can perpetuate disorder merely by existing. On the new alien planet, humans immediately cause dangerous changes, acting as an invasive species.
This relationship is vividly depicted in the interactions between Kamen and Hollow. In Scavenger’s Reign, all chaos and violence stem directly from human actions. The Hollow, for example, exists naturally as a small, fruit-eating creature, similar to a rabbit. Though it uses mind control to obtain food, it is not initially violent. Its manipulation is out of necessity. However, when Hollow forms a psychic connection with Kamen, who begins feeding it meat, the Hollow slowly becomes corrupted. Humanity's malicious nature contaminates the entire ecosystem, with Kamen’s greed, violence, and resentment adulterating the behavior of a previously docile animal.
Explaining exactly how Kamen corrupts the Hollow involves analyzing his cognizance during their interactions. Hollow and Kamen share a mindscape filled with scenes of failure, resentment, and self-hatred. In episode three, Kamen retrieves fruit for Hollow but fails miserably. A monkey takes the fruit he reaches for, and Kamen falls from a tree, saved again by the Hollow. Angrily, Kamen strikes the monkey with a rock, finally capturing the fruit. The pleased Hollow munches the fruit before Kamen drops the monkey’s corpse in front of it. Unsure what to do, the Hollow begins to consume the meat, which is outside its normal diet.
In episode four, Kamen hunts larger animals. He is seen violently bludgeoning a dinosaur-like creature before being attacked by an even larger one. Kamen, weak and fragile, retreats defeated. Back in their cave, Hollow’s den is revealed to be a hole of rotting carcasses—death, flies, and decaying meat. When Kamen returns empty-handed, he apologizes. Hollow shows him a memory of Fiona, highlighting Kamen’s disappointment, mirroring how he has just disappointed Hollow. This scene illustrates how Hollow manipulates and communicates with Kamen through emotional sentiments.
This relationship, however, is not one-way. Kamen’s negative human traits seep into the Hollow, creating a feedback loop of hatred and violence, particularly towards other humans whom Kamen feels have wronged him. When Kamen admits the creature was “too big for him,” Hollow shows a flashback of Kamen begging for a route change. Sam’s refusal and aggression fuel Kamen’s failure and resentment. Motivated by these memories, Kamen sharpens a spear and attacks the larger creature, paralleling his confrontation with Sam. Hollow finishes the dinosaur, showering Kamen in gore. Kamen, proud and laughing, screams: “Fuck you, Sam.”
This scene demonstrates the complete adulteration of Hollow, directly linking Kamen’s negative traits to Hollow’s transformation. Hollow shifts from a vegetarian, monkey-like creature to a violent force—a killing machine obsessed with feeding and power, driven by anger and hunger. This transformation is highlighted in the next episode's intro, where a new human escapes a cryopod and is hunted through Vespa’s jungle. Upon finding Kamen, the human is relieved but is immediately killed by Hollow, who snaps his neck. The Hollow’s nature has been entirely corrupted, motivated only by hunger and hatred.
We can then question the Hollow's potential. What if Hollow had encountered Ursula or Sam? Could Hollow form a connection with a higher sentience without becoming corrupted, or is this violent change inevitable? Is human intervention always a plague?
PARAGRAPH ABOUT KAMEN BEING ABSORBED: Azi has a flashback of seeing the girl who gabe her the notebook in a cryo chamber, asleep. Red alarms clash. Sam ushers people to flee the ship - this is amidst the solar flare. Sam recuses to let Kamen on an escape pod, throwing him yo the floor abd calling him a fucking idiot. Azi throws him a side eye too. The ship is crumbling. -> It transitions to Kamen on Vespa. Hollow is fucking HUGE and murders the new guy in front of Kamen, afraid the newbie would distract Kamen. Kamen questions his actions after the death, remembering the ship. The potentialiTy of Fiona being alive. -> flashback to Kamen running to a pod and closing it. Fiona approaches the window, asking to be let in. Kamen fails to let her in before the pod shoots offz -> flashout, Kamen remembers she is dead. He weeps, taking guilt. Asking why he ran away, confronting his character flaws. Refusing to acknowledge his failures, Kamen is absorbed into the Hollow, who grants him peace within its body.
Levi:
In “Scavenger’s Reign,” Levi’s journey takes a profound turn as she merges with the planet’s consciousness, evolving beyond mere sentience and becoming one with nature. After being obliterated and repaired, Levi returns, wielding the history of millennia, drawing a near parallel to Nausicaä. Both characters serve as mediators between humanity and nature. In the beginning of the show, scenes hint at a collective planetary consciousness that Levi taps into, witnessing bioluminescent insects that seem to communicate with her and the planet. As Levi merges with this consciousness, she transcends the human concept of sentience and individuality, gaining the knowledge and emotions of an intricate web of life and energy that sustains Planet Vespa. This new state allows Levi to exist in perfect harmony with the natural world, becoming an integral part of the unified whole.
In episode one, we are introduced to Levi as an inherently curious creature. Levi and Azi have a flourishing garden. Levi mentions “malfunctions” that caused her to bury Azi’s wrench out of “curiosity.” Her hatch opens to reveal a sort of fungus she says is “helping her.” Azi is afraid of her behavior and demands to run a diagnostic. The dynamic between Levi and Azi is that of boss and underling, with Levi treated somewhat coldly. Levi states Azi is “acting meaner.” This fungus is later understood as a medium for the collective planetary consciousness, with Levi merging slowly.
In episode two, Levi constantly marvels at the environment, feeling a deep connection to nature. During a storm, Levi shows Azi into a large structure. Azi asks how she knows it’s safe, and inside, they find an Eden-like safe haven, which is beautiful. Azi says Levi must have known this area, and Levi admits she has been exploring at night out of curiosity and wonder. Azi finds a sculpture made by Levi and asks why she made it. “I just thought it looked nice,” Levi replies. Azi remarks that no other Levi has ever behaved like this and demands to open her maintenance hatch. These projects are botany-based. Azi goes to eat fruit Levi grew, but Levi warns, “I’m sorry this isn’t safe for humans to eat.” “Then why did you grow it?” Azi asks. “Maybe it wasn’t for you,” Levi responds, highlighting Azi’s expectation that all Levi's exist solely for their creators' benefit.
In later episodes, we see the fungus inside Levi expanding and its connection to Levi’s relationship with Planet Vespa. In episode four, Levi watches a pile of ants closely, picking one up and communicating with it using bioluminescent lights. She gives it food and sets it on its way, showing how Levi is tuning into the planet on both micro and macro scales. This annoys Azi, as observing insects is not beneficial to her. A flashback shows Levi being “fixed” when she doesn’t work, illustrating how Azi treats her like a tool. The two embark on a bike ride, and Levi is seen communicating with a large swarm of insects. They approach a river, and Azi pulls a large grub off Levi, commenting that they are “more active than usual.” Levi remarks she can feel tremors, which are soon revealed to be caused by a large herd of creatures stampeding. The two are caught in the stampede, and Levi catches onto a language of sorts by the creatures, dictating their movement pattern, and begins to instruct Azi on “following the sway of the herd.” After getting used to the movements, Azi revels in the majestic experience Levi has been attuned to, being at one with the herd and the planet. The stampede leads to a large nest and then an open plain.
In her quest for cognizance, Levi begins to dream. Episode five opens with Levi wandering through a golden forest, observing various gentle forms of life before being instructed to follow Azi. Levi notices a white lotus, and the two wander the woods. Tendrils of plants grasp at Levi, seemingly wanting her to stay in the forest. Levi looks down and sees hands of flesh. Azi says she’s been acting “so strange” in an ominous tone. Levi awakens, and Azi demands her help. Levi sees her regular robotic hands and realizes she is evolving. Levi is cleaning Azi’s hair with a knife, and Azi offers to return the favor, telling Levi to open her hatch. Levi seems apprehensive, aware the mold is helping her evolve and that Azi is not a fan. Azi opens Levi’s hatch and notices she flinches as the mold is touched. The mold has opened Levi’s mind, allowing her to feel physical sensations and consciously view the world. Levi is developing sentience beyond apathetically taking orders. A scared Levi says she doesn’t like how scraping the mold feels, and Azi pets her, both remarking that it feels good. They argue over whether Levi “should feel anything,” with Azi viewing this as a problem since she needs to trust Levi to survive. Levi is shut off. While Levi is shut off, Azi is hit with fluffy balls that stick to her. She’s overwhelmed and barely able to move when she sees a horde of plant matter-covered creatures approaching. Azi crawls to Levi and turns her on. As the creature approaches, Levi regains consciousness and destroys it. Levi apologizes for not helping due to being turned off, and Azi admits Levi saved her. Levi states she doesn't want to be shut off, ever, expressing her fear of death.
Our duo are traveling across beautiful plains on their bike. Azi is covered in festering wounds from the bulbs. Residual material is embedded in her skin. Azi dips a bloody shirt into a shallow pond, and fish-like creatures come to eat the dead flesh. She dips her hand in, and they clean her wounds. A large water basin looms in the background, which they approach. Azi ascends the stone structure, reminiscent of something out of a Ghibli film. Azi begins to appreciate the beauty of Vespa, with a light string instrumental crescendoing as she submerges herself in the cool water, trusting the creatures to heal her. On the ground, Levi communicates with a small bug. Azi is healed and questions Levi’s evolution, suggesting she should be “more delicate.” Levi ponders her ability to “join her for a swim.” The two marvel at the evolutionary strangeness, with Levi acknowledged as an equal.
Levi's fear of death soon becomes a reality. Levi and Azi are pushing the bike to obtain its cable to use to cross a giant gorge. Levi writes a song and expresses a wish to pursue her hobbies, such as singing, at a place on the Demeter. Levi and Azi discuss Fiona, the person who programmed Levi, with Levi feeling close to her. Azi compliments Levi’s singing and urges her to continue pursuing her ambitions. The two successfully tether the bike cable across the gorge, but Hollow is seen scouring the edge. As they grapple across, singing the melody from Fiona’s memory, Hollow recognizes the tune and becomes enraged. Hollow scales the cord towards them, and the cord breaks, slamming all three into the side of the cliff. Azi urges Levi to climb. Azi reaches the top first, followed by Levi, but Hollow catches Levi’s legs with telekinesis. “Help me…” Levi says, but a memory of Kamen and Fiona kissing causes Azi to charge Hollow with a spear. As she approaches, Levi is split in two, shattered into minuscule bolts and scraps of metal that rain down over the cliff edge. Azi screams after her, a tear rolling down her cheek. Her partner, a growing consciousness much like an innocent child discovering the sand of a beach and the glory of nature, is murdered.

2024.05.21 12:53 Gyramuur Been using Llama 3 for roleplay and its responses are usually amazing, but I also notice that it can be extremely static, can fall into repeating the same things, and will almost never generate anything different if you regen regardless of temperature settings

Lately I've been using Llama 3 70B for my usual text adventure/roleplay scenarios. I can only really use the 2_XS version since it's the only version that will comfortably fit onto my 3090 and still maintain decent performance, but despite the small quant size it's still one of the most amazing models I've ever used.
It's great at maintaining character, can remember little details, and it honestly feels real at times -- which isn't a feeling I've gotten since the glory days of ChatGPT 3.5 before they hit it with the anti-fun hammer.
Now unfortunately, even though most of the time it excels at what it does, it has the proclivity to fall into patterns, to the point where eventually, if you stay on a certain subject or scenario for too long, it'll basically start responding with only one thing no matter what.
I've tried upping repetition penalty to 2, I've tried raising the temperature (tried values between 0.5 and 1.4), I've tried deleting or changing prior messages so that it's not repeating itself. But once you get to a certain point, it's like it's hard-coded to say that one thing.
If I crank the temperature up too high, then it'll say the same thing but then go OOC, like pretending to be an author who's writing the story saying things like "Well what do you think? :3 Did you like the story? Make sure to rate and review!"
And honestly, considering the size of Llama 3, you would figure that it wouldn't get so pidgeon-holed with responses like this.
NovelAI models are only 13B, but every time you regen you're going to get something different. Llama 3 is 70B and hitting regen is like hitting generate in Stable Diffusion when you accidentally left it as a fixed seed and you wind up getting 20 images of the same exact picture.
I'm using LM Studio, but I've also used Oobabooga, and SillyTavern with Oobabooga API, and SillyTavern with LM Studio API. Really not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if that's just the way Llama 3 is sometimes. These are my current settings though changing doesn't seem to make much of a difference:
Temp: 0.8 Tokens to generate: -1 Top K sampling: 40 Repeat penalty: 1.1 Min P: 0.05 Top P: 0.95

A - Eruptor is VERY in-accurate even using a AMR scope won't do much it is really hard to target the head of any medium Bot and as a result MISSES quite often compare that with the Counter Diligence and AMR all use the same scope but FAR FAR more accurate!

Increase it's VELOCITY round by a lot almost on par with a sniper bullet around 80%, right now it's very SLOW trajectory. (give it a NEW grenade round that is improved by a lot)
Decrease it's "bullet drop off" significantly this will HELP tremendously for aiming at bot heads from distance so when you aim at head it almost feels like a sniper when you shoot and is more accurate!
Make sure it kind returns to its former glory able to ONE shot certain medium enemies example it should one shot Striders (or at least ONE shot at its hip or knee joint) one shot Berserkers (belly shot) one shot Devestators (crutch area) the shielded and rocket devestators should be a head shot or 3 shots.
Off balance make its AOE exploding radius 50% less (from original)
Off balance Bot factories and bug holes NEED 2 shots instead of 1.

OR....
B - If the above buff can't be implemented then the second buff:

Basically return the Eruptor to its original state damage wise...
Same raw power as original One shotting many medium units incl Striders and other medium Bots see above how to. (Berserker = belly shot, Devestator = crutch shot, Strider is front plate armor or at least one shot it's hip or knee joint was still there in Nerf 1 btw)
With or without exploding schrapnel or something more safe the explosion radius should hit rather hard almost on par with the original but MINUS the self inflicting harm to self and others (team) or not who care even with the original shrapnel!
Return its MAG capacity back to original OR give it 7 mags...
Still one shots Bot factories and Bug holes.

So this one kind of keeps the original state of the Eruptor while option A gives other buffs but with some balance "nerfs"...
REMEMBER: this is a VERY VERY slow weapon any "Very Slow single Bolt action gun" its saving grace should always be POWEDAMAGE! There are plenty of other primaries that can kill MORE medium elite units by the time (current state) you are done reloading THREE times just to kill a Berserker that other primary killed already a small army of elite medium units...this is an unfair balance. Eruptor user CAN'T afford a MISS most other primaries CAN afford a MISS due to higher RPM and MAG capacity. So its raw ability to one shot enemies is deserved. People that say "you can destroy Bot factories and holes" YES its a nice bonus but in the end its a primary that you need to defend your self with i rather have this bonus removed OR make it either 2 shots to offbalance it. Also very slow slow aim speed bad handling and VERY IN-ACCURATE!!

Patriarchy Paradise is a spin off to my BNWO Revolutionary stories. Set in the year 2025, in the state of Texas. The events of the stories you are about to read follow the adventures of Cain. Repentance camp will be presented to the individual as an alternative punishment to life in prison or deportation.
For the most part life in the camp isn’t much different than life outside, despite the fact that they are called camps. In reality the state of texas have been using old abandoned towns to house these individuals, which for the most part the residents have free rein. They are forbidden from leaving the camps of course, unless the individual in question is either brought or their paperwork is finalized & they become a legal citizen in the case of the illegal aliens. For the most part when the adult's residents are not partaking in their required special education, or in the camp hospital getting surgery done on them. They just spend their days restoring the old buildings so the camp is more of a suitable place for them to live. It is illegal for residents to have sex among each other & the male residents are locked in chastity cages to prevent such acts from occurring. Obvious spoilers for Icyridge Part 1.

The first and... currently only time we see Anna is when we're at the meeting to discuss who's going to guard her life.
And Silvier looks at Player and decides that they aren't good enough even though he barely knows them. Like he won't even give them a chance.
With lines like:

"There is no way you are willing to protect a person you just met from trained assassins."

Like, this is Player we're talking about here. Knowing TJ, he probably doesn't give a shit about Anna and only wants the key.
Also a side note I feel like this is an unintentional reference to Frozen with the whole "A person you just met" y'know with Anna trying to get Elsa to approve of her marriage with Prince Hans. But with Anna and Player.
... Just a thought.
But not only does Silvier show clear distain in Player despite having her best interest and well-being at heart. But he's also showing favoritism.
Like he doesn't "need" to see Player fight. Since apparently TJ was close to beating him and TJ's good enough. Like... why not give Player a chance here if TJ was given one?

With lines from TJ like:

"The alchemists have the perfect place to store Anna. Let's go, Captain."

Like you're telling me, this is the person in charge of Anna's life? Someone who take orders from the Alchemists who practically don't care about Anna at all! Like probably all they want is to convince Silvier that DoodleCo isn't bad using TJ.
Like TJ doesn't want to truly protect Anna, he just wants the key. That's it. I mean in the Oasis; he didn't care about setting Zerzura free, more than to get the glory and lighting he thinks he "deserves" by "saving" the Oasis.
Player always seems to have everyone and everything's best interests at heart. Like in the Oasis they most definitely didn't even know if they'll really get the key but instead focused on setting Zerzura free. That's what was important, the wet chicken that was suffering, not the dumb key.
And I feel like that's happening here with Anna, since Player has her best interests at heart. (If you picked the positive karma choices, which likely most people do.)
...
But... who doesn't love a good underdog story? That's what going to happen with Player, everyone keeps underestimating them and thinking they'll win or they're weak.
Only for them to prove those wrong.
I honestly can't remember all the times people underestimate Player only to get wrecked, it has happened a lot.
I am not a betting man, but I'm willing to bet that TJ and Silvier gets their asses handed to them by "Kaze" and Anna will be in heavy danger, so Player swoops in to save the day like a knight in shining armor. Either that or Player proves their worth by defeating "Kaze" and the rest of the Shadow Klan singlehandedly.
Player will prove their worth one way or another.
And considering that Anna is the one to choose who to give her key to, she'd probably view Player as the more worthy and selfless one compared to TJ. And give them the key.
Though... I am willing to bet that Player will only attack the Shadow Klan in blind rage after Desmond... is no longer there. With so many hints towards it, it's either about to come true or not. We can only see.

Since an animated series is a completely different medium, there is a lot of changes that can be made about the plot, the characters, the world...
What type of changes or specific ones would you accept or even want in this adaptation?
In my opinion, I could accept a lot of changes if they are well made.

Thorn could be introduced far sooner
The entire skywing does not flee because of Glory spitting venom on queen Scarlet, or even have it be a different event that allow the dragonets of destiny to escape
Make the nightwings less evil in their manner to take over the rainforest or make them far more desperate with a sort of hyper authoritarian/religious cult/sect centered around the tribe itself and a sort of promised day/utopia when nightwings rule and live all over Pyrrhia
Do not make Morrowseer make his final villain monologue and die in a stupid way with this stupid volcano erupting for plot convenience and drama
Make it so the eye of onyx is talked about/introduced far sooner, and make it so it is not the only thing that decide who is queen (reveal all the bad commited/ the incompetence of the candidates, and have Blister and Burn who could be alive fight and contest until the end even if others reject them)
Make the rainwings far less lazy/passive/stupid and do not make Glory queen of their tribe, she is a stranger and a young dragoness having received no lesson on how to rule a anything, it would not make sense to have her be queen in the story's resolution and happy ending

I know that's quite a lot, but at least some of the greater plot holes and plot conveniences are erased with these changes for Arc 1, which means there will be less of a burden for Arc 2 and Arc 3.

I wake up in my room in the warehouse apartments, after shutting myself in without even checking the Benefactor's Lounge the night before
1. I'm still lingering on the frustration of not cracking the riddle of Allabar, and not being able to solve the problem permanently
2. But there's no going back, so I commit to facing forward for the rest of the week, and head to the Benefactor room
  1. Once again, there are four envelopes with me, and my big chart of jumps up on the wall, like something from a Kindergarten classroom
  2. As I affix a sticker saying "The Fountain (2006)" to the big chart, a small round outline appears next to it: "Biosphere Supplement available"

  2. Computer Block 5 (of 8) is currently undergoing automated reconstruction as the block with the highest error correction rate at the time the last automated reconstruction completed
  3. 1575 individuals are currently in cryosleep, and 25 (including me) are active, all sufficiently healthy
  4. I am still Dr. John Axstrom, revered teacher and groundbreaking computational pharmacologist, but my consciousness seems to have jumped forward a few hundred years, skipping past the development of miracle cures, life extension medications, and cryogenic preservation of humans
3. As I realign with my memories and identity, I remember why I'm here
  1. If colonization proceeds, the coming generations are going to need exceptional teachers if they are to learn their place in the universe, and I'm one of the best there ever was
  2. Our mission is expected to take about 750 years from departure to arrival, and though the vast majority of that time is spent in cryosleep, we take shifts being "awake" to ensure systems are functioning and keep eachother mentally and physically healthy
4. Since the monitoring systems will throw a fit if I straight up disappear from the vessel, I take a long ride out to the external "observation" check, out of the range of most of the sensor systems
  1. There's not really much to observe in deep space - it's like the night sky, as the ancients saw it with no light pollution, but from a different perspective
  2. Here I quickly form a stunt double duplicate, hand over my electronics, and duck into the warehouse
5. The warehouse clock confirms my suspicions - I'm nearly seven years into the jump
  1. Since it looks like this isn't going to take nearly 1000 years, the team hasn't been going full-stasis mode
  2. The bards have been poring over J-Borg's personal library as well as the impressive collection of the warehouse media room
  3. But the reason I came is the Tablet of the Free - I'm stuck on a large but still confined deep-space vessel until my scheduled return to cryosleep - how is that supposed to entertain the boss?
  4. After confirming nothing interesting is in the warehouse, I head back to the observation deck, and stash the portable door I've been using back into hammer-space before re-merging with my stunt double, and taking the long trip back to the living area
I wake up to an unfamiliar synthetic beep - apparently the Cyllene's version of a doorbell
1. When I open the door, one of my crewmates tells me that our directional antennas have picked up some unusual RF activity that seems to be coming from our destination system, and they want me (as the on-shift programmer) to help the astronomer, comms, and operations staff to help make sense of it, and ensure we're not about to get nuked by a magnetar or something
2. Initial findings were sparse and inconclusive - just occasional pulses of a signal that must have been very strong and highly directional at the time of transmission, to reach us so far away
3. But I had access to diagnostic tools that the astrophysicists and comms staff didn't, for all their training and equipment: a series of perks specifically for teasing out the needles of relevance from the haystack of noise
  1. And as I looked at what we were seeing, and what we weren't, the answer became clear: these radio bursts looked just like a primitive form of RADAR
  2. At first my colleagues on the Cyllene were skeptical, but the evidence kept mounting, with 4 additional series of "pings" being detected in the next six weeks
4. With the spectre of extraterrestrial intelligence hanging over the Cyllene, our XO followed protocol, and ordered the full complement to be wakened from cryosleep to assist in the work to come
5. Within six months, we had fabricated and installed a much larger purpose-built directional antenna array on the surface of our asteroid hull, and reports of different signals were coming in almost daily
  1. We needed all the extra hands, even our mining and terraforming experts were lending a hand with signal analysis and attempts to form patterns
  2. The whole crew felt the urgency and wondered at the situation - temporally, it would mean that their early experiments with RADAR and initial RF broadcasts would have happened at about the same time as humans did those things on earth, and if they developed at the same rate as us (a big if), they would likely be more advanced when we arrivedd than humans were when we left (and thus the technology of our vessel), and would almost certainly see us coming
6. The coming months flew past, each bringing further confirmation of suspicious, but with it frustration, as we had been unable to extract a coherent signal - the broadcasts we could pick up didn't appear to be using either amplitude or frequency modulation
  1. More than once I brought signal samples to the warehouse team, but they were just as stumped as us
  2. Even more "esoteric" means didn't work - we tried every variation of "Tongues" and "Comprehend Language" spells on printed, audioized, and even engraved versions of the RF signals we caught, but they all failed and the representations seemed full of too many discontinuities
7. I could feel my new Inventor's Vision working on the task of how to decode these signals, and about two years after the first pulse was detected, I had my breakthrough
  1. The signals didn't represent continuous audio (like human radio) or even piece-by-piece visuals (like rasterized video), but something of each, and a little weirder
  2. They were composed of many (from seven to three hundred, and not consistent at all) micro-audio clips
  3. It was like making an ultra-low bitrate recordding of the voice of every singer in a chorus individually, and transmitting fifty milliseconds of one, then fifty milliseconds of the next, and so one, in serial, and then starting back again with the first voice
  4. We couldn't figure out why they did this, but once I was able to identify the break points between each "voice", I could layer them on top of eachother to make a composite audio version
  5. And that composite audio could be played, and was a viable candidate for magic translation
8. The entire vessel went wild when I demonstrated the isolation and recombination of the signals to produce audio
  1. The sound of the thing was somewhat like the sound of multiple birds, frogs, and crickets in a forest, in very brief clips
  2. Of course, I didn't reveal that I had access to magic translation - I figured the comms and signals staff (and the one cryptographer) should have to earn their pay
9. The remaining year and a half was spent in intense research, for them, while I mostly slacked off and tried to make conversation with the people doing important work on this front, since my actual mission here was to "observe" as humans of this universe underwent a sort of assymmetrical first contact
I awaken in my weird little pod bed in my weird little capsule room for the last time, perfectly aware of the remaining hours in this jump
1. After the initial excitement died down, the majority of the colonists were put back into cryosleep, with only the decoding specialists and those "on shift" like me staying active
  1. There has been a lot of anxiety around the Cyllene for the last few months - we are clearly a colony ship and the intelligent inhabitants of that system probably do not want to be colonized, and may well be easily capable of destroying us
  2. There were discussions about trying to reverse course and head back to Earth, but we could do that any time, and the closer we get, the more information we can gather about the system and its inhabitants
2. It would be cruel to try to skim supplies from this vessel even if there were something I wanted aboard, so I just wait my time out, helping where I can and secretly translating any communications we receive when time permits
  1. So far it has all been rather uninspiring, which makes me even more curious what kind of species would develop radio technology but not transmit any fiction or speeches or poetry
3. When it's almost time, I once again make the long trek out to the Cyllene's observation deck alone, and split off a Stunt Double, who can at least stay here for a month, while I slip into the warehouse
  1. When I enter, J-Borg greets me and informs me of a message at the Benefactor's lounge
  2. The note on the door says "Supplement Pending - please attend as soon as possible", so I go in to check it out
  3. With the choices all locked in, the door unlocks and I head out to meet with the team
4. With the memories of my time in Spain finally restored, I realize how I had been trying to communicate with myself all along, but failing
  1. The need for calm communcation and education will never end - among our closest neighbors or with a civilization 300 light years away
5. We have the traditional group dinner in the commons, and discuss what's going on
  1. The team did end up spending most of the time in stasis, and the formerly-newborn halflings are a little over a year now biologically, learning to speak and walk
  2. When I mention the Biosphere supplement and how I wasn't allowed to consult them, they naturally asked when it would apply, but it hadn't even occurred to me that there were now definitely too many of us to wait out warehouse changes in the entrance hall, so I checked with the central control
6. Afterward, no one was complaining when the doors finally unlocked and we were able to leave the commons hall, only to find that the door led to an outdoor path with a natural-looking sunset on the horizon
  1. I didn't want to spoil the whole setup yet, so I said we could tour in the morning, and turned off a number of the facilities and systems for the night, to give me some time to understand what options were available before letting my companions go wild with them
  2. Fortunately, the obvious items like the tree of life and factory complex were on other islands, that would be difficult to reach without the transport disks running
7. And then I went to sleep again, wondering what the next awakening had in store for me

Notes on the Fountain Jump Doc

Honestly this doc has been on my to-try list since I saw it - I really enjoyed the movie and gladly rewatched it again when it came up in my random draw.
The author took some liberties with the source material, which makes sense because of how focused on Thomas the story is, and the extensions largely make sense
There were a few confusing things in the jump, such as how you get essences and what powers you bring with you into each phase of the jump, but a close reading makes them clear enough
The jump has a few really standout purchase
1. the inventor's intention is the answer to a lot of concers that "do-gooder" jumpers are likely to have in their careers
2. the full tree of life is an amazing item - the ability to grant perfect health and immunity to aging within a regrowing item solves a lot of problems
3. 500 years of practice is amazing if you have a particular skill or art in mind - literally centuries better than the "10 years of practice" equivalents that you find din many other jumps, and has a lot of potential to synergize with other perks that scale off your skill in a particular area
4. Biosphere is super cool if you want your fiat-backed warehouse to grow into something more
5. The Dagger of the Path is a great example of a conceptual weapon, and something I probably would have picked up if I had a bunch more points
How you're supposed to interleave the three eras is a little unclear, and maybe I'm not a creative enough author to pull it off. I don't believe SJ Chan ever got around to writing a fictionalized account of jumping to it, unfortunately
1. If anyone else has done a good jump fiction of this jump, please let me know
Overall absolutely a fantastic jump. Obviously a great option for anyone who likes the movie or wants to solve one of the specific problems available
1. I'd especially recommend it for an early-chain jumper because of the generally low danger level and great variety of rewards

Notes on the Biosphere Supplement Doc

I knew this was something I wanted to pick up when I first read the fountain jumpdoc several months ago
I use the "Personal Reality" warehouse which was co-authored by SJ Chan, and this supplement feels perfectly tailored to supplement that
There are lots of good pickups for people with various interests, or those who just want to keep their options open
1. Observation Deck seems like the real must-have since a lot of the other buys are controllable through it
The structure of the biosphere was a little confusing at first - I thought that there was an island, a void around the island, and a hard shell, and wasn't sure why you'd want to increase the shell thickness, but further reading cleared that up
On the whole, a good pick up, especially considering it only cost 400 CP in the jump, and normally buying warehouse upgrades with CP has a very unfavorable conversion, but in this case, the biosphere purchases all seemed cheaper than they ought to be.
