Flashback Friday: Wrap-up and Retrospective

2022.04.16 10:41 nowast3ddays Flashback Friday: Wrap-up and Retrospective

When I first started poring over the archive, and its more than a decade’s worth of releases, it felt like swimming through endless photos and copy. There were so many cool pieces, which felt fun enough to discover as a latecomer, that they seemed to warrant another collective, retrospective look. It’s been really rad catching up on so much Outier lore, combing through the old product shots and technical prose, learning about old pieces and fabrics (and using that research as a jumping off point to orient myself in the broader wild world of threads), going through the comments on old Reddit posts, testing out some of the pieces that I could get my hands on, and hearing firsthand feedback and general musings on some of the other garms.
My goal was to make it to a full year of Flashbacks; last week was Flashback Friday #58, and I think it’ll be my last one for the foreseeable future. I’ve covered the majority of old products that got me sufficiently hyped or curious enough to really dive into, and this feels like an overall pretty optimal spot to call it.
As a final/coda Flashback, here’s a deep throwback to when Outlier’s website first launched and to that time Abe and Tyler met.
Anyway, I‘ll still be around, I’m still stoked on Outlier and the pieces that are coming down the pike, now I just feel like I’ve finally “caught up” on the more than a decade I’d missed out on, while also getting to share some moments of reflection with y’all. It’s still my aim to do more write-ups and reviews in the future, I’m just gonna chill on the archeological archive digs now.
Huge shoutout to u/ciyer for maintaining illposed as a resource for us all to dig through, to the Outlier crew (past and present) for everything they put into making all the cool creations that inspired this series, and to everybody for the convos, comments, and for reading along the way.
Guess this is that Forrest Gump moment, thanks for joining me on this journey. Time to refocus on what the future holds.

2021.11.12 22:10 greysunlightoverwash Soft classic necklines: go!

I find that the neckline is an overlooked piece of style. Once I've got the neckline right, a lot more makes sense!
As a soft classic, I get shown a lot of collared shirts (like a man's dress shirt) but they never look inspiring on me (although with some tweaks, they can.)
Invariably, the necklines that look best on me are very clean with a minimal amount of stitching and detail. If there needs to be a closure, moderate-sized buttons that aren't too contrasty are generally better than a zipper or snaps, which look a bit cheap on me. If I have to have a zipper, a zipper in the same color as the garment is better than contrasting.
Here are some necklines I think really flatter my features, and ones that don't:
YES
Soft, wide scoops, cleanly hemmed. This will always be my best look—not too revealing, not too plungey, not going off the shoulder, just a nice airy openness really flatters my whole face and shape.
Moderate cowls and oversize stand collars (like not overdone funnel necks): so good.
Mock turtleneck without a seam like this.
Slouchy turtlenecks that softly fold over (like a sweater).

Not sure
Boatneck. I have a dress that leans curvy-boatnecky and its lovely, but I haven't tried on a true boatneck in forever. Guessing it's a no.
Square. Well, I am sure it doesn't look GREAT on me, but it's not a full no. More rounded is obviously better.
Henleys. Honestly the buttons just irritate my chest but I always think I would look better in something simpler. I can pull off a henley if it kind of blends in (small buttons) and isn't very noticeable.

NO
V-necks. Might get downvoted for this. I can sometimes pull this off like on a wrap dress, or collarless silk shirt, because there's enough softness and curvature to balance the rest of the garment. But typically, a v-neck is an automatic strong no on me. The worst is a small v-neck, like on men's undershirts. Deeper or wider can be a bit more doable.
Half-zips. I'm sure there's an exception but generally these just look tacky on me.
Crew necks. I don't know why, but I look ridiculous in plain t-shirts, even dressy ones.
Folded turtlenecks that are tight around the neck—nope.
Excessive cowlnecks and super slouchy big funnel necks. I look like I'm drowning in there!
Strapless. I just look a little too naked.
Asymmetrical or off the shoulder—I look lost.

What else? I've found a flowy scarf can be a good way to fake a good neckline on a shirt that wouldn't work otherwise.

2021.10.10 00:32 DianaInTheWoods 14-Day Edinburgh + Highlands Gig/Vacation Packing List

I've seen folks doing this, and I'm strangely attracted to and comforted by reading through other's packing lists. I figured I would do my own, as this is the first time I've minimally packed for an extended trip during slightly cooler temps that didn't involve going to the ol' childhood home.
End of OctobeEarly November, I'm going to Edinburgh/Glasgow for an opera gig (7 days with "dark day," aka non-show day, hike included) and tacking on a quick Highlands tour (3 days)- not counting 4 airport travel days.
I'm packing a North Face Base Camp 32L duffel and because it's also a work trip, a personal item bag for my score, laptop, and costume...sorry, absolute purists, but mama's gotta get paid. If it wasn't for those items, I'd stuffing it all in the duffel.
Note: Unless indicated all clothing is black. Everything is black. Being goth-y has its perks.
MISC
SHOES (I have old injury issues, so my shoes are non-negotiable)
UNMENTIONABLES
SLEEP/ACTIVE/OUTERWEAR
STREET CLOTHES
TOILETRIES
I'm planning on getting a scarf there (almost always what I get as a travel souvenir), but other than my active gear, I've got 3 decent outfit bases plus one dress. I'll be changing from regular clothes into costume 4 of those days, so doesn't seem to matter too much. Based on the weather reports, I shouldn't need fleece-lined leggings or a cable-knit sweater, and my jacket is 3M lined and my socks are wool.
I feel naked without my leather moto jacket, but given the weather and wanting to just focus on the trip and not hauling stuff, this seemed reasonable.
Thoughts? Anyone with experience with the climate at that time think I do need a thicker sweater?

2019.12.08 21:49 nejenkins EXP195 Gostwyck Alphacore Vest Review

For the thirsty, here are the FIT PICS.
I love a Vest. I already own a Futurecharge Vest (EXP116; though I really would prefer to size up to a Large, so hit me up if you have one) and an Alphacharge Vest. I basically wear a vest outdoors and indoors from Fall to Spring. I generally run hot and prefer to roll up my sleeves, so jackets and sweaters aren’t really my thing unless the occasion calls for it.
So when I saw EXP195, I was initially excited (OMG VEST!) but then immediately started worrying about the cowl neck. It just looked too... extreme for me. Too showy. I basically decided to ignore the release.
Then Tuesday happened and I watched the IG Live. u/abe1x talked a bit about how he’s been wearing it a lot and I remembered that I had also switched to nearly full time Dreamweight T’s based on his recommendation. Dreamweight has been a game changer for me in the summer. It’s much more manageable for my body temperature and when I do sweat (which is a lot), it at least doesn’t show and dries quickly. I’ve basically just continued to wear Dreamweight as the temperature drops, along with the occasional Runweight. So hearing that Abe preferred the vest made me think that it might work for me. I purchased, figuring that I would probably just lose the $20 return fee because the cowl neck wouldn’t work.
Well, I was wrong. I like this vest. A lot. I’ve worn it on travel and at home over the last week, both inside and out. Temps outside have ranged from 60 to 30. In colder weather, I’ve layered it under the FCTJ.
Pros:
Cons:
So I’m glad I tried this out (thanks, relatively liberal experiment return policy and easy returns!). It gives me something totally different in my rotation and is cozy AF. A great combination.
BTW, add me to the voices that loves Dreamweight and hates the unfinished raw cut look, especially in the neck. Though to be fair, I guess the cowl of the vest hides the neck. But I want to wear it in the summer with no vest and not have my wife ask WTF is up with the hobo look.

2015.12.22 01:37 juicemagic You guys... I just realized I'm wearing an entire thrifted outfit

Hey haulers,
I just realized I'm head to toe in thrift today, and it makes me so happy. I'd link pics, but I don't have a full length mirror available.
I'm wearing a purple cowlneck seater I pickled up last week, a pair of Dockers that fit perfectly (I can never find that at the regular store!), and some low-heeled loafers I picked up yesterday. My undershirt was picked up at super extra clearance months ago, socks were thrifted months ago. Also, my purple leather jacket from a local resale store, and a gorgeous purple and gold star scarf I got from a free box at work last week.
I only paid full price for my underwear. This is a win. I love you guys.
