2022.08.21 01:47 johnflorin Nokia E72 in 2022

With a kid who's about to start school, I thought about a way to get her a reasonable form of communication which does not involve a modern smartphone.
Previously I had bought her a Nokia 5310 (2020), initially as a headphone-free MP3 player. Love its dual speakers and am still baffled at how tricky it is to get an MP3 player that is not a phone or an iPod Touch and that actually has speakers.
The 5310 did its job music-wise and we recently also put a SIM in it. Since she really enjoyed the messaging & calling aspect, a QWERTY device like the E72 seemed like the logical step up.
So, some thoughts on the E72 in 2022:
- The first thought was updating it to a (somewhat) more modern OS. It had the 022 firmware on it from 2009, so I updated it to the 071 firmware from 2011 (obtained from here: http://www.cpkb.org/wiki/Nokia_E72_RM-530_firmware_data_package_download ). I know that there are 2 newer versions than 071 but couldn't find the downloads and they seem like minor releases anyway. The update was quite a saga, but the short version would be: use BEST (from http://symwld.com/delight/best.php ) - follow those instructions, if it fails (the app stopped responding while flashing with my IKEA cable), don't panic, just select DeadMode in the Flashing tab, select the firmware manually (including the country-specific code!), use a different cable and press the Power button, it will attempt the process again. I tried 3 cables, an old SONY smartwatch one did the trick for me, so you don't absolutely need the official Nokia USB cable. BEST is definitely the way to go for Nokia firmware updates nowadays, the Phoenix software in Windows 11 is trash (gave me BSODs) and at least with Virtualbox the "just use a VM and 32-bit Windows XP or 7" suggestion doesn't work, the VM's device manager would not recognize my pased-through USB cable properly.
- The UI by modern standards (or even by 2009 standards if compared to PalmOS, webOS, Android at that time, etc.) is pretty complex for a kid to understand, but it's workable for the few functions that work properly anyway.
- No contact pictures in the Contacts app, which is a bit of a bummer, as is the lack of threaded SMS, both items are downgrades compared to the 5310.
- The music player is quite nice, including even album art. I had used mp3tag previously on the music she had on the 5310, so it all worked after swapping the microSD card, the key if anyone else is interested is to have ID3 2.3 selected & small album pictures (which makes sense anyway on a 240x320 screen).
- Yeah, the screen...I was looking online at any available E6es due to that awful resolution. But hey, crap resolution = less reason for the kid to stare into the screen all day, so mission accomplished! Even BlackBerries of that era had 480x320 already, so a definite shame.
- Kid loves the voice recorder, BUT, if you select High Quality, why the hell does it scan all the voice recordings in the music player and thus create an Unknown artist with them? They probably also get played back if you play all the other songs. The Gallery app has "Sound clips" separately from the music, but the clips only go there if you select Standard audio quality. A bizarre bug, as with any original content you kinda want the quality to be as good as possible to begin with. On the plus side vs. the so-called music-focused 5310, there's Playlist support!
- Camera's decent - the 5MP stills, 480p video & autofocus support actually make it relatively usable vs. the VGA camera on the 5310 (all the feature phones HMD currently sells top out at 2MP, including the KaiOS ones). The only issue is looking at the pictures on the E72's screen, that resolution is just not great for viewing a 5MP still or even making sure the picture was fully in focus.
- A HUGE plus is being able to send pictures via MMS, the 5MP stills get automatically resized when sending, good stuff!
- I wish whatever emoticon format was used in the Messaging app could appear on the recipient's end via SMS, I just get things like "<3" instead of the actual emoticon. The Lumia 650, for example, can send the appropriate emoticon format via SMS (I guess it's a RCS thing?). Same goes for receiving SMS emoticons, but none of these worked on the 5310 either, so at least it's not a downgrade.
- If not uninstall, I really wish I could at least hide a whole bunch of apps from the menu, there's 0 reason anymore to constantly see things like the SW update or OVI Store icons so prominently and definitely part of the confusion for a 6-year-old is having so many apparently app icons that are more or less just technical settings shortcuts. I know I could make a folder and dump them in there, but it's just not neat :)
- Not being able to sort app icons from A-Z is also pretty silly, even on the 5310 in 2020 they went for a non-modifiable and non-alphabetic list, but at least on the E72 I can move the items one by one to get the desired effect.
- Keyboard's lovely, kid really appreciated having full QWERTY, as the Notes app is another thing she uses a phone for.

So, overall, in 2022 an E72 still feels like a very good choice for calling, SMS & MMS, note-taking, music playback and some light photo/video capture, with solid hardware too - it looks impeccable even 13 years after launch due to the materials used then, no cheap plastic to peel away, etc.

In comparison:

- a BlackBerry 9720 (so, BBOS 7) had issues with an SMS sending error (maybe it didn't like my operator, but it could receive SMS & call just fine, online searching showed it's a pretty common problem with the older BBs nowadays)
- a BlackBerry Classic (BBOS 10 with limited Android app support) I also had around has developed a beer belly from its non-removable battery
- HMD doesn't make any QWERTY phones, can't imagine why they don't have at least one such model given the dozen or so more or less identical numpad models they sell
- from just about everyone else you need to go full screen touch-based, which is a magnet I'd rather keep the kid away from for a while

Hope this is useful for anyone else facing a similar decision :)

2021.01.23 05:11 digitalbiz Short DD on BB 🚀🔥💎

Here’s some short DD for you.
I worked for this company way long ago. Mostly interns work there but that’s how they reduce cost.
Blackberry is not the Blackberry you used to know before. They have a new highly profitable unit called QNX which is into developing embedded softwares for Autonomous Vehicles and EV stuff.
Apart from that, they are into creating security softwares for government. For example, Korean government is high paying permanent client.
If that’s not enough, they are going after all the companies who copied their patents. They are leaving not a single fucking company even if they copied a mere of an emoticon style. Seems like (sorta) this is now a side-income revenue model for them as they don't sue for shit. They sue for near billion amount.
For example this one, https://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/12/blackberry-awarded-815-million-in-arbitration-case-against-qualcomm.html
While I was there they won a lawsuit against Qualcomm (another billion dollar company) and won over 815 million dollars in compensation.
Now, they won against Facebook. I am not sure but they sued Snapchat as well for fully copying their messaging features.
I attended all the town-halls given by John Chen, and he is fucking awesome guy.
In my opinion, they are gonna crush their March Earning's calls. And, there would be a surge right after that. From all three quarterly townhalls, the April ones are generally more exciting and good news types.
It's not just some Canadian company. They have offices all over the world.
There’s lot of growth potential. I am giving this boy a PT of 100$+ EOY.
Buy BB. 🚀🔥

2019.06.08 20:13 Violeteyes1 I'm going to be in middle school this fall!

Yes i know Reddit is for people 13 and up but i'm mature for my age so don't report me ok? I want to get rid of my Silly Bandz but my mom won't let me. I tried to tell her they're only for little kids but of course she didn't even listen. So i'm gonna sell my silly bandz to the younger kids and buy a pair of shutter shades instead. That will almost make up for the fact that I don't have a Blackberry(I have a stupid looking iphone, it's white and has an apple on the back with a bite cut out) and literally everyone i know has one...how can i get my parents to get me a Blackberry?
I'm even going to make a MySpace account :D . Sorry, that was so random! On MySpace everyone uses emoticons like :3 and talks lYkE D1S , it's so cool!

2018.09.13 01:07 Cayotic_Prophet Personal dictionary character limit reduced after update

I have a BlackBerry Priv but I'm sure this probably affects other android blackberries as well.
Back in the day, and even with my first PRIV (am on my 2nd) I loved customizing the dictionary with "Happy Birthday" ASCII images as well as emoticons and what not. As of late, there seems to be a reduction in the amount of characters I can save in these "shortcuts."
Am I the only one that misses the expressive freedom afforded by this level of customization?

2016.10.06 21:36 shawncasemore Why Apple Emoticons Create a Competitive Advantage

My wife recently began using emoticons in her texts. This might not sound too exciting, but I’ve rarely ever seen her use them in the past, so it seemed unusual when suddenly every text message contained some type of emoticon. If you’ve downloaded the most recent version of iOS 10, you’ve likely seen these emoticons pop up as options when typing text messages.
When my wife asked why Apple had added this feature, my initial response was “to provide options,” but upon deeper consideration there’s something else going on.
As of this writing, there are few other mobile devices that offer similar functionality (although that is likely to change soon!). By adding these new options, Apple is achieving three things:
  1. Providing a new option for those with the preference.
  2. Distinguishing their products in the marketplace, supporting their competitive advantage.
  3. Instilling expectations in users around product options.
The first is the most obvious, and most Apple users will now begin using more emoticons due to the convenience. But when you look deeper, what you’ll notice is that Apple is continuing to “train” its users in what they can expect from Apple (continuous improvement in product functionality), and creating a gap between their product and their competitors. This in turn will make it more difficult for users to leave. This later point is the most powerful.
Consider that many of the existing BlackBerry users are still such on account of their desire to stick with a physical keyboard. The use of the “Querty” keyboard was what helped BlackBerry stand apart and “train” their users to retain their products. Unfortunately, as users found new benefits in digital keyboards, their strategy failed to have staying power.
Which brings me back to my point.
In trying to create a compelling competitive advantage with a product or brand, these three components are the ingredients for longevity. For any product or brand to have staying power, it must accomplish all three aspects described above, and do so in a continuous fashion. Apple is likely not going to rest with iOS10 because they know this.
If you’re not a fan of Apple products, look beyond my examples and focus on the three components above. I think you’ll find other long-standing brands and products apply the same theory – Ford, SkiDoo, Amazon, etc.
Creating a compelling advantage isn’t about just having a great product or service. It’s about finding ways to educate customers to the extent that nothing else will do.

Ok, so this is the "Holy Crap, a new transmission is going to cost HOW much??" Sale
My husband's truck broke down last weekend, and the fix is going to be obscene. We also just got dinged for an insurance mix up from last year, which will hopefully get sorted, but we are left holding the ($800) bag right now.
My collection has some gorgeous under-loved smells in here that could go to a new and more loving home, and their proceeds will go to digging us out of this awful pre-Christmas financial hole we find ourselves in frown emoticon
I'm shipping from Canada, so shipping to the US is $5USD. Canada is a little more steep, usually closer to $8USD depending on where the package is headed. If you buy a lot, i will definitely discount the shipping price.
Enough with my sad story - On to the goods!
If you feel like my pricing is off on any of these, let me know and we can discuss.

2015.07.14 06:51 Cepul He Likes Taking Pictures

I need help. God knows that I need help but I have no fucking idea what the hell I'm supposed to do. Everyone thinks I'm crazy but that's only because they don't see the things I see everyday because I swear that my dormmate's a psycho. I just want to move out and be normal again, oh dear God help.
Okay, I'm sorry. I suppose I should just start my story. I'm just hoping that any of you could offer any advice so that I can finally rest in peace. I'd readily kill him but then, I don't want to darken this bright future I already have planned for me. Okay, I'm sorry. I'm blabbering again.
My name is Dan. I just recently moved into University A a month after completing my SPM (this is basically the Malaysian version of GCSE) and I was overjoyed. I was actually skipping a year, since most people my age only got into university a year after completing their SPM. Thankfully, my trials were excellent enough to qualify me into entering their program they dubbed "Shortcut". My parents were so proud of me too and I just could not wait to move in and start learning.
God knows how wrong I was.
I now reside in this old dorm in Block B with five dormmates. Their names are Amar, Sham, Alec, Dani and Zack and we all got along so well at first. It was all merely good times at first and we frequently laughed at the jokes we often made. Three of us were in the same class too. That would be Amar, Zack and I and we had a lot of fun together, struggling through the subjects, only to comprehend them the other second without much effort. We were a band of brothers.
Then, one day, Zack decided to carry out his old hobby. He owns a Blackberry, you see, and he was constantly on it. He told me that it has everything he needs, albeit Whatsapp and Instagram, and that he is more than happy with it despite me telling him that it is outdated and should be disposed of the in the trash. One odd thing about him was that he was always constantly taking pictures of us. Of this I mean my roommates and my classmates. We were freaked out by this earlier but then shrugged it off as normal behavior for him. Soon, we began calling him the Zackarazzi, and that name stuck.
Still, it was always weird for me. He would take all these strange pictures of us. For example, Zack was most fond of taking pictures of people sleeping. I once caught him taking a picture of me at 3AM, sleeping still on my bed. Still, I didn't choose to alert him and just shrugged it off, being extremely exhausted. This continued. He would take pictures of us in our towels after showering or eating our dinners or in couples (whereby there were two people in a picture acting supposedly sweet) and it got on my nerves.
A week ago, I asked him what he did with the pictures he took to which he only shrugged, while smiling really widely. It was kind of surreal, I had to say. I demanded his phone from him and Zack suddenly transformed. He became extremely furious, punching away my arm every time I tried to grab it off him and he screamed at me in my ear, eventually kicking me in the stomach just to fall on my bottom, struggling to breathe.
Still, I became determined. He began carrying it everywhere, even when he was showering or occupied with dirty jobs. He would never once let it go from his glance, his eyes ever mindful of it. It became extremely irritating. Then, just this morning, he accidentally forgot his phone while he was showering I guess and I immediately snatched it and accessed it. Surprisingly, it had no password and it revealed to me that he was deep in a Whatsapp conversation with "Daddy". To my horror, he had posted our pictures to this "Daddy" figure. Every single one of them. However, what surprised me the most was his dad's comments.
"Delicious," he would say or, "Bring him home." The latter was posted just recently after Zack had posted a picture of my friend Epul to his Dad. Zack had sent in an emoticon as a response, one with a smile. I quickly scrolled up and saw basically everybody from the Shortcut program's photos posted with his Dad constantly contemplating about everything.
His dad's last post was simple. "Can I meet Amar?" he asked. I'm terrified and scarred now. I then pressed back to see who his other contacts were and to my surprise, I saw many other contacts. What horrified me was they were all named "Dad" or "Father" or "Papa" and after a brief scan, I discovered Zack was posting the same things to them too. I quickly shut off his phone and ran into the mini library down below, too worried and frightened to think. I don't know what to think but I'm weirded out.
Who were these "fathers"? And what did they mean by delicious? I'm scared for Amar now. He's going to Zack's place tonight. Should I stop him from going? Please tell me what to do.

Specifically without all of the extra emoticons and extras. I work for an IT company and my boss is looking for something that will work with his Blackberry, and the new devices we'll be getting (Android). So far I've seen Kik, GO, ChatOn, and one or two others, but they all have a bunch of stuff we don't need or want (I don't need to send my boss a cartoon). So if you know of any that might be more appropriate for a work environment please help me out! Thanks for your time.

Howdy all! Let me first preface in saying I'm not a blackberry user. My experience with them is limited and probably outdated. So if you tell me to do something, please keep in mind I probably wont know what you're telling me (explain it like I'm 5, kind of thing). If I send Japanese emoticons to my friends 9800, she only sees blocks (unrecognized characters). Is there a way she can see them? Such as installing some kind of font pack? If you can help, I will sing your praises, because my google-foo sucks apparently: ヾ(´□`* )ノ

2010.02.23 05:45 brian21 Why is my iMac so slow?

First off, some vital stats: Late-2006 White Polycarbonate iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 3GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM Running Version 10.6.2 of OSX (Snow Leopard) Hard Drive: 125GB used, 34GB free Connections: Fast enough ethernet connection (up to 11MB/s up/down speeds), external HD, outlet-powered USB hub with a few things like iPod, Blackberry, USB Flash Drive, and so on connected sometimes, a bluetooth apple keyboard, and a mighty mouse
I get the rainbow pinwheel all the time, have repaired disk permissions and recently, repaired my disk (had to boot from install cd), ran the system maintenance in Onyx, and deleted the system cache in Onyx.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Added connections and fixed model year.
