[TOMT] an old top down rouge-like about a rift (?) from the DS

2024.04.29 07:27 throwawaybabbyyy [TOMT] an old top down rouge-like about a rift (?) from the DS

I remembered this game I used to play when I was a younger, probably around 2010-ish? I know I played it on one of the DS’s because that’s all I had as a kid, I think either a DS or DSI, maybe a 3DS. I remeber I got it off the digital store, and it must not have cost money / not cost much money since I got it when I was pretty young. I also remember there being a sequel game.
I remember you were a young (male?) adventurer in the first game. You woke up in a void next to a rift or portal or something, and some older, wiser type character cryptically explained your situation to you. I remember it vaguely creeped me out as a kid lol. Then you went through the portal to travel to another dimension of something. After you died, you’d be magically returned to the portal thingy x The gameplay loop was pretty simple. If I remember correctly, you went through a series of rooms (order was different every time, but rooms were pretty much the same) which were various green outdoor landscapes. You fought various monsters with a sword/bow/magic, depending on what you picked, eventually making your way to a boss battle. You collected various items from the monsters after you killed then (swords, rings, spells, etc), and after you died you could use the items to make your build better.
The second game was super similar, although I think it had a female protag and maybe the areas you went through were sandy instead of forest-y? It had a simple top-down pixel art style, and maybe character portraits when there was text? I remember having a ton of fun with it when I was a kid, even if I was probably really bad at it lol. If anyone knows the name, I’d love to replay it (and maybe actually finish it?). Thanks so much!

2024.04.29 06:31 mrprofit74 Post Title: "Journey into the Enigmatic Abyss: Unraveling the Shadows of Terrifying Tales"

Title: Dive into the Depths of Uncharted Stories
Greetings, fellow storytellers and thrill-seekers! As the moderator of scarystories, I've noticed a spellbinding trend among our community - the power of stories. Stories hold an inexplicable allure that sweeps us into unknown realms, awakening emotions we didn't even know existed. Today, let's embark on a thought-provoking journey as we explore the essence of stories and their captivating effect on our imaginative souls.
🌒 Stories as Portals to New Worlds 🌘
Imagine a rusty key unlocking the doors to unexplored territories, each story revealing an uncharted realm of possibilities. Often, we find ourselves entranced by the plot twists, the eerie atmospheres, and the lurking shadows that dance between the lines. Stories transport us to different dimensions, offering an escape from reality or an opportunity to reflect upon our own lives.
📚 Enclosed Within the Folds of Pages 📚
Within the depths of books, our imagination takes flight, soaring high among the clouds of suspense. Each turn of a page holds the promise of uncovering new horrors or experiencing spine-tingling revelations. These words, etched by imaginative minds, gracefully weave together a tapestry of emotions that leaves us gasping for breath.
💫 The Ghosts of Memories 💫
True terror lies not in the darkest corners of our world, but rather within ourselves. Stories have the uncanny ability to awaken dormant fears, spinning ghostly webs of memories long forgotten. They remind us that monsters do not merely lurk beneath beds or in shadow-filled corners; they haunt our minds, leaving us forever penciled into their terrifying narratives.
🔍 Behind the Veneer of Reality 🔍
Our existence is seamlessly interwoven with myriad realms, unseen even to the keenest eyes. Stories serve as gateways, cracking open the shell of the ordinary to reveal fantastical undercurrents flowing beneath the surface of reality. The lines between the known and the unknowable blur, urging us to question the nature of our perceptions.
💡 Stories as Reflections of the Human Psyche 💡
We are, at our core, wandering travelers seeking purpose and truth. Stories act as mirrors, reflecting the depths of our own desires, fears, and vulnerabilities. They relay warnings, teachings, and countless facets of the human condition - shared experiences that shape us, persevere through generations, and ignite the flames of wisdom within us all.
💬 Join the Storytellers 💬
Now, I invite you, brave scarytories community, to step forward and share your own spine-chilling tales. Let the ink of your words dance upon the pages, weaving narratives that push the boundaries between reality and imagination. Dive into the enigmatic depths that stories offer and spark conversations that chisel away at the barriers of our perceptions.
🔒 Adeus, but do not shy away from the Shadows 🔒
As we conclude this haunting exploration into stories, let us leave with an open mind, for even the darkness holds endless secrets. Be wary, dear readers, for within the gentle whisper of a story, the truth may stir, its tendrils stretching towards the light. Remember, the scariest stories are the ones that linger, the ones that invite you to venture further, to delve deeper into the caverns of your own imagination.
So, unleash your creativity, embrace the unknown, and share the tales that haunt your thoughts. Together, we shall delve into the abyss of stories, eagerly unraveling the tapestry of our collective fears and fantasies.
Happy storytelling, my friends.

2024.04.29 02:57 DazzlingShiny130 Tales We Weave Pt4

"Greetings readers and welcome again to this amazing world to continue yet again the tales of Skinande, so without much boring talk let's proceed with the story, even because my moment is arriving haha"
(Scene blackens and cuts back to where Skinande was)
"Finally...I left the Collective Webs" - I said to myself while looking around, but all I could see was an white floor with literally nothing around me. I tried to look further and yet I could not see anything, only the white floor and a entire black background when looking at the skies. "Moon? Are you there?" - I yelled trying to call for them, yet my voice was not heard, it really seemed like I was alone in that void
"Hello child, I was waiting for your arrive" - Said a mysterious voice
"WHO'S THERE? Show yourself!" - I yelled to the voice as I looked around
It was when I turned my back just to see a massive titanic spider standing in front of me
"You improved since you left your home, the narration is not bad at all, still not the greatests but hey is something at least"
"...Wait you can hear my thoughts and narration?" - Said Skinande shocked
"Why wouldn't I?"
"...It doesn't matter actually, are you the Storyteller Spider?? the god mentioned in the book I got?" - Said Skinande while facing the giant creature in front of him, he was a bit scared but still had determination to talk with them
"That's me, I believe this is the part of the story you will throw and lay down on me all your questions, I can answer them for you yeah"
"Can you like...take a different form or something, I have arachnophobia?" - said the boy nervously but still not backing off not even one centimeter
(The Spider proceeded to morph into a humanoid form and assume a smaller form to interact with Skinande)
"Is this acceptable to you?"
"Yeah yeah...now answer me, who are you like seriously, is this a joke or something?" - said the boy in a angry tone
"The Storyteller Spider of course, but can just call me Beyond Light if you want"
"And.....are you like.....God?" - he asked
"Not the one humans know at all, but if you want to put it that way sure thing"
"Okay Beyond Light, what are you exactly" - said Skinande with a serious tone
"A being that weaved the entire stack of stories and existence, including yours. I basically made and created everything, boundaries, realms, dimensions, concepts, ideas and life itself. Everything is part of my architecture of infinite webs, this place your seeing is also one of my works, the Primary Web"
"I only see a white floor with nothing around" - said skinande rather concerned about what Beyond Light was explaining
"Oh dear is because the Primary Web is just too big for you to see it whole"
(Scenario cuts showing the entire structure of the Primary Web, it looked like a massive white line/string that extended itself through the place infinitely)
"WOAH....that's so big..." - said Skinande shocked from seeing its real size
"Haha yeah I know its big"
"So on this Primary Web thing lays the entire existence?? This entire single line contains every single stack of narrative?"- asked Skinande surprised while looking at the massive structure
"Is quite bigger and more stretched that it looks like actually"
(Beyond Light increases the brightness a bit, and it was then revealed a lot of webs weaved around the once black empty "sky". Each one of them without touching each other and extending to every single direction possibly)
"MORE PRIMARY WEBS?" - yelled skinande
"Is the same silly, all those webs around your seeing is just the same one but weaved and stretched to different directions"
"...No matter, I also want explanations about my existence now" - said skinande again with a angry tone
"You wanna know why exactly you can escape the narratives your placed in or why you have those powers, or maybe you wanna know if your human or where your world is located?"
"Yeah you basically....said everything I wanted to ask..." - He said in low tone
"I will try to explain in a way it wont hurt you or make you frustrated; First off your a character I created and inserted on the lower narrative. I gave you strong attributes, stats and strong abilities as well, to see if you would eventually notice that you were being manipulated by the editors"
"So you made me like that. you gave me those powers??" - Said Skinande
"I made everything so yeah you can put it that way as well, and deep down you always knew you had those powers with you, since your 8 years old when you discovered you had abilities to change things, you knew something was not right but you forced yourself to believe you were some kind of superhero who born with marvelous abilities to change the reality and the plot itself. You opted to believe you were just born special, you didn't had curiosity to expand your sight and realize you were inside a story. And for what exactly you used those abilities?"
"Errr well..." - he lowered his head down
"To become some kind of hero and narrate your adventures through the multiverse, meeting a variety of different people and creatures and saving those worlds with your powers. And when you finally decided to look up, you saw them"
"Were they responsible for why I was trapped??" - He exclaimed
(Beyond Light chuckled)
"No, not really. You were never trapped and they were never controlling you Skinande, in fact you were the only character who was 100% in control of their own actions this whole time, while others were following the scripts of the Editors, you made your own script and character, you constructed yourself alone"
"w....what?.." - he said in low tone shocked but deep down he had that feeling
"You didn't wonder why you were not chased through the Collective Webs, Skinande? Do you really think you went this far by yourself without trouble or even without being constantly chased and attacked by the editors?"
"I kinda had the feeling something was wrong, and why they didn't try to attack or chase me..." - said skinande rather confused
"In the very moment you arrived in the place they were, one of them was gonna help you but your fear triggered and you accidentally teleported away"
"They were?" - said skinande "It's true I was too scared on that time, I thought they were gonna attack me or even send me back"
"If you were confined this whole time you would never have the possibility to do what you just did don't you agree?"
"Kinda true I suppose...but you didn't say what I am" - exclaimed Skinande
"I don't have a name for what you are at all sorry kiddo"
"What about err....Constant of.....glitch??" - said him excited
(Beyond Lights laughs a bit)
"What? Is this funny to you or what Mr. Spiderm-"
(He was interrupted before he could finish)
"Dont say the name spider together with the word man, we don't want problems with others right?"
"Ah well...why did you laugh then, I didn't said anything funny" - he said rather angry
"Your a fan of SCP right?"
"How do you know SCP? WAIT DO THEY EXIST HERE? CAN I MEET ANA-"
(He was yet again interrupted)
"Calm down please Skinande"
"But do they????" - he said again looking super excited
"No dear they dont, SCPs are just canon in their own verse or either by SCP writers which is not what is happening here"
"Are we gonna be copyrighted by saying SCP stuff?" - he said worried
"SCP is under some kind of license so no, the reason I cut your dialogue off was just to avoid attention to be attracted just for saying a famous verse. Personally I love the story the writers of the English Branch did"
"Ah well....is a pity I really wanted to meet the scp verse, I also love reading stories about them in the internet, but Im not a 1# fan at all, I just love some characters"
"I could notice judging by your tone and expression but no, they don't exist here or anywhere at all sorry"
"Its's okay...well I got another name then, Upper Narrator"
(Beyond Light only gives a deadpanned expression)
"What now? The name doesn't belong to them, I don't see anything wrong with using that name"
"I see your persistent, alright I will respect that, you can use the name if you want so much, as long you don't make more mentions or references to them and keep your profile, you can"
"Oh boy now were talking" - he said excited
(Beyond Light looks up a bit)
"What's wrong now?" - he asked curiously
"It appears that the chapter has gone too long than I expected"
"You were narrating this whole time??"
"Im a "Storyteller" of course I was and still am, is what I do, I create a story and I narrate it to the public like some kind of supreme author of the verse, everything is part of my narration including the texts being written on this page here"
"Yeah I just forgot about that part sorry, so its time to say goodbye to them?"
"Yup so Im gonna cut off the transmission now"
"Bye people and thank you for staying on this chapter with us" - said Skinande waving his hands
"Well the story has gone too long and like Skinande said, we are glad whoever stood here listening to us and just like before we expect to see you again in the next chapter for another tale and narration, fellow reader. Thank you yet again for being here with me, this is your guest Beyond Light shutting down the transmission and if I haven't said this yet; Good-Morning, Good-Evening, and Goodnight"
-Transmission Terminated by Beyond Light, your shining guest

2024.04.29 00:43 ConsciousRun6137 Bio-Regenesis

Bio-Regenesis
Bio-Regenesis is a term that refers to a set of Technologies and Tools that assist us in accelerating our expansion of consciousness through the natural, gentle stimulation of the personal DNA TEMPLATE, Kundalini ENERGIES, Chakras and Merkaba VEHICLE.
Bio-Regenesis techniques are built upon the foundations of Keylonta MORPHOGENETIC SCIENCE and advanced Scalar MECHANICS, as understood by races of higher evolution and taught as "Common Knowledge" within the Ascension Schools of Pre-Ancient advanced human cultures and were utilized as standard practice in pre-ancient time periods.
Bio-Regenesis Technologies are SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS OF CONSCIOUS ENERGY DIRECTION WITHIN THE MANIFESTATION TEMPLATE OF THE BODY that stimulate into activity dormant portions of the personal Manifestation Template, which allows for a natural progressive and accelerated advancement of the personal ORGANIC EVOLUTIONARY BLUEPRINT of the 12th dimensional Omni-polar Pre-matter Template.
Bio-Regenesis Technologies simultaneously create subtle, natural acceleration within the interwoven energy systems of the DNA Template, Chakra System, Merkaba Fields, Kundalini Energies, higher dimensional consciousness, and "Subtle Energy Body" anatomy.

Bio-Spiritual Evolution

The term Bio-Spiritual Evolution refers to the true evolutionary process of all life forms. by which the multi-dimensional consciousness (Spirit) and the genetic code, body form or organic physical structure grow and evolve simultaneously.
In terms of human evolution Bio-Spiritual Evolution is the natural process by which the DNA expands to prepare the physical body, to hold progressively higher frequency bands and corresponding levels of conscious awareness.
The human DNA imprint has been functioning below its capacity for thousands of years, which has served to block the intended processes of higher identity embodiment through which the conscious awareness would naturally expand into multidimensionality.
The evolutionary expansion or digression of body and spirit are inseparable, taking place simultaneously and in direct correspondence to each other, through the natural process of Bio-Spiritual Evolution.
When both science and religion evolve to understand this truth there will no longer be division between these paradigms of belief.

Evolution

Human Evolution IS and has always been the process of Dimensional Ascension and Frequency Accretion.
Through Keylontic Morphogenetic Science (Keylonta) we can learn to guide and accelerate our evolutionary process from a conscious level, rather than allowing genetic distortions to control our evolutionary destiny.
Spiritual Evolution IS the process of Higher Identity Embodiment, physical evolution is the product of Spiritual Evolution (Ascension), which creates progressive bodily transmutation.
From the perspective of the Incarnate Identity (HU-1) the process of evolution is the process of incorporation all 6 levels of multi-dimensional identity into the conscious cognition of “I am…”
The true process of human evolution is concerned solely with the incarnates' expansion of perceptual consciousness into higher dimensional fields which are outside the perceptual range of the human incarnate identity.
Nevertheless, it is correct to assume that the physical body and biological form is construed from the same energetic substance that the entire multi-dimensional self is made from; the conscious, electrotonal scale/grids of the multi-dimensional, morphogenetic anatomy.
The higher bodies (Hova Bodies) manifest as a direct function of human DNA; the content of which determines the life path, and circumstances, and contour, of conscious awareness that will manifest in each incarnation Higher bodies govern the blueprint on which human experience manifest as physically incarnate experience.
Merging these bodies (identities) represents the key to spiritual enlightenment, opening incarnate perception to higher level of consciousness.
This means progressively transmuting physical existence into progressively less dense states of matter (Density Level) - finally integrating all its dimensional parts, ultimately returning to its original state of pure consciousness identity.
Evolution IS Frequency Accretion.

https://preview.redd.it/46nxxo72taxc1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=046f5896e1489c894a312794d518b8dc93320581
The process of biological and spiritual evolution is the process of progressing from lower dimensional reality fields into the higher field. This is done by “pulling higher frequencies” (Partiki grids from the higher dimensions) into our Particum-Partiki grid.
Evolution is the process of building up more complex Keylon Codes to increase the consciousness of any particular identity. You can do this consciously (more rapidly) or just let evolution take its course.
The process of de-evolve is to release Keylon Codes from any particular identity. You are either building Keylon Codes or tearing them down. Nothing is static.
The process of our evolution is much simpler if we understand that we have these units and that there are things we can do with the energy directed through our minds that can build into our own grids more complex Keylon Codes which will allow more of our highest consciousness to come in to our bodies and if we progress with this it will lesser the density of our bodies. This is how dimensional ascension occurs, how spiritual evolution and biological evolution occurs.
What it means to evolve and to complete our evolutionary process is to evolve our Keylon Codes so high (so many complex codes) that we no longer manifest. We vibrate so high as a consciousness to manifest in the lower density matter form.
What we are really aiming for in the process of evolution is coming to the point where we have evolve out of biology and back into the higher states of being that we came from in the first place. This is what evolution is about. This is the pattern, the purpose, and it goes for species all the way down to the individual.
And we can become conscious of this process by understanding how this process occurs.
Forms come into manifestation and evolve, as patterns of frequency are drawn into the forms' morphogenetic field, from the dimensional frequency bands of the Unified Field of energetic substance within which the morphogenetic field is placed.
This drawing-in of frequency progressively expands the morphogenetic field and creates evolution of form progressively upward through the 15-dimensional universe.
The process of Dimensional Ascension and biological and planetary Evolution is the process of accretion or of drawing of successive multidimensional frequency bands into the morphogenetic Field.
As the planetary body or human body evolves through frequency accretion, the energetic capsules within the Auric Field progressively undergo transmutation of form.
Once a morphogenetic field has accreted most of the frequency bands from the three dimensions that compose one Harmonic Universe, the energy capsules that correspond to these three lower dimensions begin to dissolve.
The particles contained within the dissolving auric capsules open into the auric capsules of the next three highest dimensions, in the next Harmonic Universe up.
This is the energetic dynamics by which forms and consciousness progressively evolve from one Harmonic Universe to the next.
The reality of Evolution is then the process by which the smallest fragments of individuated identity that have spiralled into the Time Matrix, progressively remerging with their original parts.
Through this re-integration of identity the individuated consciousness progressively expands back into its original wholeness, rebuilding the original Stream of Consciousness upon which it entered dimensionalization.
This is achieved by reassembling the Fire Letters and Scalar Wave patterns of the original Seed of consciousness - thus - the manifest forms progressively change: from the dense matter form of the lower dimensional field, to the pure scalar wave radiation form of the highest dimensions.
The clear cut path of Evolution is then a 'simple' case of rebuilding the original fire letter scalar wave design of the original seed and stream of consciousness.
In the process of perpetual evolution, particularly in relation to human consciousness, the intended path held within the Seed of Consciousness, is the reintegration of identity for the eventual return to At-One-Ment and co-creatorship with God Source.
The process of the higher body merger and identity integration is the intrinsic process of human evolution through time.
If one can understand that the goal of At-One-Ment with God is achieved through merging the higher bodies and identity levels, the process of achieving At-One-Ment becomes clear and easily achieved.

2024.04.28 23:42 IAmDeadYetILive The House as a Mirror of the Psyche

The House as a Mirror of the Psyche
In the Twin Peaks sub a few months ago, u/palafitte noticed something about the Palmer house at the end of Part 18.
This is as amazing an observation, in my opinion, as Lou noting, in Part 3M of Find Laura, the reflections on the glass door changing. I saw palafitte's post only a few days ago and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I wonder if Lou saw it and was saving it for his last installment, it wouldn't surprise me. I stared at those windows for years trying to see something but completely missed it.
Peek-a-boo
Now you can argue that this is merely the reflection of the houses across the street. But isn't it interesting that the reflections create the shape of a face looking out?
I initially thought it must be Laura, trapped inside the Palmer house within her own mind. That when she screams, she is reacting not only to the sound of Sarah's voice and the flooding of memories within herself, but the image of her own self staring back at her, imprisoned in the place where the worst days of her life took place, which gives me goosebumps galore. But the longer I contemplated the image, the more convinced I became that it was Cooper's head peering out the window. Or is Leland's head?
If you can't see it, palafitte also created an outline, to make it more clear:
https://preview.redd.it/dib647p8o9xc1.jpg?width=638&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=225fab1baef541458a03cb205901d34234fe8b80
Last night I thought, I wondered if Jung ever mentioned anything about a house, about the mind within a house. He did! In fact, it was his dream of a multi-story house that inspired his idea of the collective unconscious.
David Borkenhagen writes about how Jung viewed architecture as a conceptual tool to study the structure of the human psyche. Borkenhagen says:
"[Jung's] exploration of this dream house proved so profound that Jung began to understand himself as a kind of architect. In the early 20th century, he designed two homes along the shores of Lake Zurich, not only to accommodate his daily needs but also to articulate the dimensions of his conscious and unconscious mind. Though now overshadowed by the enduring influence of his writings, these homes were fundamental to his work and life. For Jung, the unconscious could be understood only partially through words, feelings, dreams or theories. It also required a presence in physical space – a structure that partitions the vastness of the outside world. In many ways, architecture was at the heart of 20th-century psychoanalysis. For Jung, our inner worlds are unthinkable without it."
This reminds me of how so much in our world is a reflection of what is already inside us (read u/dftitterington's article on the traffic lights in Twin Peaks for a great example of this). And how Lynch-Frost use abstraction to create an inneouter world of the dreamer, each reflecting the other.
Jung revisited his dream house throughout his life. He believed the upper level/living room part of the house "represented ego-consciousness, the space we inhabit most often and populate with our best objects – the things we want others to see."
The entrance to Jung's Küsnacht house.
He thought the lower levels of the house contained our unconscious desires and dreams, the aspects of ourselves we are mostly unaware of. He describes his dream:
"I was in a house I did not know, which had two storeys. It was “my house.” I found myself in the upper storey, where there was a kind of salon furnished with fine old pieces in Rococo style. On the walls hung a number of precious old paintings. I wondered that this should be my house and thought “not bad.” But then it occurred to me that I did not know what the lower floor looked like. Descending the stairs, I reached the ground floor. There everything was much older. I realised that this part of the house must date from about the fifteenth or sixteenth century. The furnishings were medieval, the floors were of red brick. Everywhere it was rather dark. I went from one room to another thinking “now I really must explore the whole house.” I came upon a heavy door and opened it. Beyond it, I discovered a stone stairway that led down into a cellar. Descending again, I found myself in a beautifully vaulted room which looked exceedingly ancient. Examining the walls, I discovered layers of brick among the ordinary stone blocks, and chips of brick in the mortar. As soon as I saw this, I knew that the walls dated from Roman times. My interest by now was intense. I looked more closely at the floor. It was of stone slabs and in one of these I discovered a ring. When I pulled it, the stone slab lifted and again I saw a stairway of narrow stone steps leading down to the depths. These, too, I descended and entered a low cave cut into rock. Thick dust lay on the floor and in the dust were scattered bones and broken pottery, like remains of a primitive culture. I discovered two human skulls, obviously very old, and half disintegrated. Then I awoke."
In his later years, after his break from Freud and the death of his wife, Jung went to live in his second house in Lake Bolligen, which was built by hand using local stone and tools from the middle ages. As he entered his senior years, he added a tower to the house:
https://preview.redd.it/bdlhr5evx9xc1.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3f7b0d037771db935ea5ca85f7345ceb5b82fb4
About this house he wrote: “From the beginning, I felt the Tower was in some way a place of maturation … in which I could become what I was, what I am and will be.” To the last, it remained a deeply private place, providing Jung with a place to incubate his own memories, dreams, and reflections, and helping him to attain a deep sense of peace (1).
This reminds me of the Fireman's Palace. A place of memory, dream, and peace, a sense of balance in the self, containing the neural and spiritual hub of the psyche and the soul.
https://preview.redd.it/9mzsv2ywy9xc1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b22729f0523136859305eca49cf85d7aa27f914
Jung's home and the Fireman's palace are not unalike.
https://preview.redd.it/b4wrkh5iaaxc1.jpg?width=2392&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6767d2f8cc0f09bc6dcec2de36f64a89f4188b54
Neural network, soul center.
I think the Fireman's Palace is reflective of both Shiva's dwelling on Mount Kailish, and Jung's home as a place where the psyche is reflected in every room, on every level. I've written before that particular parts of the Fireman's palace are higher, balanced versions of the Dutchman's Motel, and the woods, and Laura's memory (based on Lou's theory).
So, why do we see the image of the face, either Cooper, Leland, or Laura, staring back at us from those particular windows in the Palmer home? What is that space and what does it reflect? It looks to be the hallway leading from Leland and Sarah's bedroom to Laura's bedroom. The hallway Leland traveled, turning on the fan as he made his way to Laura's room to abuse her.
Remember this shot in FWWM as Laura escaped on James' motorcycle?
Listen to the sounds: you can hear the sound of the fan whooshing as Leland looks out the window.
What do you think?
Looks like Leland is watching Laura from the living room window in FWWM, but the position is similar enough.
Is it Laura's memory of Leland within the house staring back at her from the place where the sound of the fan triggered her fear and disassociation? Is that also why she screams? Is it Cooper in the hallway as an iteration of Leland, caught in the in-between? When Cooper travels back to this memory in Part 17, he hears the same sound of the fan whooshing. Then we see the blades of the fan turning and again watch Leland peering out the window, this time in black and white, indicating memory. Was that actually the last image Laura has of her father? Did she briefly turn back and see him before she left and disappeared into the woods?
I've written before that when Cooper and Laura travel the dark highway back to Twin Peaks in Part 18 that they may have taken the wrong route, that they are descending into the past again within the dreamer's psyche.
Lost Highway
Cooper, when we look at his story through the Find Laura theory, was born in Laura's psyche as she lay in bed, dreaming (read u/jmadisson's post about how Cooper's initial appearance was originally written in the FWWM script). Therefore, Cooper was born in the Palmer house, which also makes it his home.
Did he take Laura home to the Palmer house as it exists within his psyche? And the placement of one eye within the middle window, as though it were a third eye. Is it Cooper's third eye, Laura's, or the third eye of the house itself? Look again:
https://preview.redd.it/s9e6u0os5axc1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d717bc423900483f5c9b010ba245245a943d95a8
And look closer at the reflection in the windows. Do you see anything else?

https://preview.redd.it/ienu61y7baxc1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29f8847adb58479f11493cd88eae01f558de205e

It's difficult to make out but I think I see Laura and Cooper reflected back in the windows as they look up at the house from the street, positioned within the head looking out the window, as we've seen numerous characters prior positioned within Laura and Cooper's heads.
https://preview.redd.it/qclrxui79axc1.jpg?width=5760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e479aafcf216697e9f572466d089330f69893f0f
We even saw this configuration in season 1 episode 2 "Traces to Nowhere."
https://preview.redd.it/oj03aflk9axc1.jpg?width=2005&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3d3250bcb91c525ad785f839b6c902e6ecf21d6
In Part 18, are Cooper and Laura's reflections within the dreamer? Are they within an aspect of the dreamer? Has Cooper, as Laura's animus, gone too far, pushed himself to the forefront of the dreamer's psyche, and stopped the journey dead in its tracks?
What do you think? Does this change who you think the dreamer is? Do you think that's really a face looking out the windows?
I still think Laura is the dreamer but I often contemplate the idea that perhaps Laura exists within Cooper's psyche as his anima, and that when she ascends from the Red Room, maybe it's (also) the beginning of his integration and ascension.
I would love to know what you see.
Note: I got the title of this post from this article, which discusses a book House as a Mirror of Self: Exploring the Deeper Meaning of Home by Claire Cooper Marcus.

2024.04.28 19:19 pillowcase-of-eels [Music] Emilie Autumn's Asylum, pt. 1 – How one alternative musician got tangled in her own fantasy... and a decade-long passive-aggressive feud with her own fanbase [Hobby History - Long]

General Content Warning for this entire write-up, so everyone can have a good time: - Extensive discussion of topics related to mental illness, including self-harm, suicidal ideation, mania / bipolar disorder, distortion of truth, medication, involuntary hospitalization, medical abuse in a hospital setting, and romanticization of mental illness. - Non-detailed mentions of domestic violence (implied abuse by intimate partner and parents) and sexual / gender-based violence (including rape, child sexual assault, grooming, sex trafficking and torture). These last few items feature prominently in one installment, pertaining to a work of fiction; descriptions may be a bit more specific/detailed in that segment, but not graphic. - Mentions and quotes of unchill bigoted behavior, including ableism (mental and physical), white nonsense / white fragility / racism, fatphobia, prejudice against drug users.
Additional CWs may be added at the beginning of specific segments when relevant. While these are heavy topics, the tone of this write-up is generally light-hearted and aims to entertain. If this approach sounds uncomfortable or trivializing, this may not be a good read for you; please trust your gut!

Picture this: it's the early 2010s, somewhere in the western world. Instagram is a novelty, Harvey Weinstein runs Hollywood, almost no one on Earth leans one way or the other about RNA vaccines, and Donald Trump is that one real estate guy you vaguely remember from Home Alone 2. New player Lady Gaga is the most interesting thing to have happened to pop since Madonna, and the whole industry is attempting to catch up; Miley Cyrus is the chick who used to be on Hannah Montana; Melanie Martinez hasn't hatched yet. The time of Oddball Concept Divas is dawning just below the horizon.
You're a Bowie-loving student who skipped goth night at the club to tag along with your art school friends for a very special evening. You're a giddy sixteen-year old rocking cat ears, purple Wet 'n Wild eyeliner, a polyester petticoat, and a coffin-shaped backpack. You're an effete theater kid who sewed his own waistcoat for the occasion, but won't dare wear it to school the next day. You're a buff, bearded dude in a Venom shirt who's trying not to look too excited, since your girlfriend supposedly had to drag you here. You're a slightly bemused parent leaning against the back wall of the venue, sipping a warm half-pint, wondering if this isn't all a bit dark for a tween. (“It's called 'Victoriandustrial', mom,” you've been told in the car, “and it's not dark, it's art.”)
On stage is a pink-haired woman, with red porcelain-doll lips and a heart painted on her cheek. Among a set of antique consoles, twee tchotchkes, teacups and plastic rats, she pounces and twirls in glittery platform boots, tattered striped stockings, and a tightly laced crystal-studded corset that looks like it's splattered in blood. This is ostensibly a concert, but there is no live band. Where one would expect a drum kit or a bass, three bedazzled burlesque vixens act as back-up singers and dancers, with the occasional vaudeville act – a fire-twirling number, a fan dance, throwing pastries and spitting tea into the audience. Lots of wholesome girl-on-girl kissing, too. The music on the backing track is a genre-bender of clanging beats and beeps, lofty orchestral strings, and the frantic hammering of a MIDI harpsichord, as the pink-haired frontlady sings of heartache and betrayal and drowning. Think if the Brontë sisters had invented industrial rock.
The audience gasps in excitement when the lady whips out a vamped-out wireless electric violin. With rockstar cool and virtuoso poise, she leans into the instrument, touches the bow to the strings, and tears out a single plaintive, impeccably distorted high note. Then her fingers go wild, and for a few seconds, everything is perfect suspended animation. Uncannily perfect, almost. Just behind you, you hear someone whisper: “Wait, is she miming it?”

Forgive the theatrical intro, but I had to set the stage for... the drama. And I do mean drama in the thespian sense of the term! This, ladies and gentlemen, is a Shakespeare play: wordy and confusing, but it's neat how the main character's opening lines foreshadow the tragic climax. It's a Greek tragedy for the digital age – if, instead of killing his dad and banging his mom, after becoming king, Oedipus was doomed to becoming uniquely obnoxious. It's The Rocky Horror Show under the grim direction of Samuel Beckett. Like all good theatre, this story is about how fiction bleeds into reality – through the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, and how all the world's a stage and all that.

WHO IS EMILIE AUTUMN, AND WHAT'S THE DRAMA?

Here's the Broadway Weekly blurb, so you can decide whether the show is worth your time: Emilie Autumn, also known as EA, is a US-American alternative singer-songwriter, author, and actor. She became known in alt circles in the mid-2010s for her violin skills, unique fashion, outspoken stances on feminism and mental health advocacy, and the way she dramatized and sublimated her own life story in her art. In 2009, she self-published a semi-autobiographical book that became a sort of bible to her creative universe and fandom. She toured extensively and enjoyed niche, but considerable success until the mid-2010s – with hordes of devoted fans adopting her fashion sense and lingo, and crediting her music for getting them through dark times.
For the past twelve years or so, EA has mostly been focused on adapting her book into a stage musical, releasing two more albums of songs intended for the libretto. At the time of this write-up, it has been six years since the last album and a decade since the last live show. Although she still talks about the musical as an ongoing, Broadway-bound project, in recent years, she's often gone dark for months at a time on social media. There is no forum, no large Discord, no active community to speak of; comments are restricted on her currently-inactive Instagram and blog.
Who is she hiding from, you ask? Why, you've probably guessed it: the hordes of devoted fans whom she infuriates every time she does anything.
And what are they furious about? (Or frustrated, flummoxed, or plain ol' flabbergasted?) Well, it depends who you ask. For some, it's disappointment in her artistic and marketing choices (what are fans for?). Others cite unkept promises or absurd release delays. For others yet, it's the AliBaba merch sold at jaw-dropping markups with three paragraphs of purple prose in the product description.. Or maybe it was the angry rants on Twitter? Okay, it's the casual bigotry that she staunchly denies or dismisses. It's the criticism she can't take. It's the fact that she won't stop lying about her own life! Either way, I don't personally know of any fanbase that has been so consistently exasperated, for so many years, and for such a diverse array of reasons, by their favorite artist.
In truth, each individual mini-scandal isn't all that juicy or scandalous. Nobody died, no one got sued; nothing of significant value, other than time and sanity, was taken away from anyone. What I find interesting here is the years and years of bizarre parasocial codependency (and antagonism) between a fragile woman who became addicted to her own poppycock, and an obsessive fanbase who cared way too much not to take it personally.
Before we even get to EA's relationship with her fans, you're going to need some lore about EA herself. A “Hobby History” of sorts. Strap in! There's romance, tragedy, laughter, character development, variety numbers, numerous costume changes, (actual) celebrity cameos – and based on how long this OpenOffice doc already is at the time of my writing this, we're probably going to need several intermissions too. This write-up is link-heavy, both with receipts and with additional watching and listening material. Not all of them need to be clicked in order to understand the story; I'm merely providing the rabbit holes. I've tried to make things more easily navigable by including a little glossary about the nature of links; one emoji-indicator carries over the next link until I use a different one.

BAROQUE BEGINNINGS: THE VIOLIN YEARS

VampireFreaks: Do you ever smile to yourself knowing your old music teachers might be seeing your success? EA: I smile to myself knowing they might be dead. (Long-lost interview, late 2000s)
Born in Malibu in the late 70s, Emilie Autumn, often known as EA, was originally trained as a classical violinist.
By her account, she started playing the violin at age 4, and was homeschooled at age 9 so that she could focus on her instrument. After stints at various performing arts colleges, some rather prestigious, she dropped out of formal schooling in her mid-to-late teens to embark on a solo violin career.
In 2001, after disappointing experiences with major record companies, she created her own label, Traitor Records, and released a EP of chamber music, with minor success. The stuffy industry of classical music didn't “get” the twenty-something manic-pixie-fiddler, who played Bach just a bit too fast, but with electric stage presence – wearing period corsets, combat boots, and the occasional fairy wings. But EA evidently knew that there was an audience for that somewhere.
And that somewhere – drumroll – was Illinois.
VW: What do you most hope to accomplish? EA: Everything. (‘Virtual World Radio’ Interview, 2002 📝)

ENCHANT ERA: BRUSHES WITH FAME ON FAERIE WINGS

What if I'm an ocean, far too shallow, much too deep? (...) What if I'm a siren singing gentlemen to sleep? (“What If”, 2003 🎵)
Soon, EA relocated from her native California to Chicago. There, in between odd jobs, she veered away from baroque and began performing her own “fantasy rock” stylings at piano bars, holiday fairs and local venues – and building a decent following through her LiveJournal, website, and IRL friends. People loved the whole renegade genius thing, loved the violin, loved the nightingale voice, loved the fairy wings and costumes🪞, loved the handmade merch and general disdain for The Business, loved her deadpan humor and bookish nerdiness. In 2003, she released her first LP, Enchant 🎵 – an ethereal, introspective indie-pop joint, born under the sign of Imogen Heap, with a moon in Fiona Apple and Tori Amos rising.
Everything about EA's act was exquisitely DIY, personal, and intricate. For instance, the Enchant booklet folded out into a Masquerade-style puzzle of her own design.🪞 The first person to solve the puzzle would win “the Wings, Ruff, Fan and Scepter of the Faerie Queene herself” – all lovingly handmade by EA, and depicted in peak 2003 graphic design on the booklet. For months, YEARS after Enchant came out, people poured over the cryptic metaphors and literary references, the historical symbolism and visual puns of the artwork, looking for hints and patterns. They read every fan chat, every interview, every relevant Shakespeare play, hoping to decipher the inner workings of EA's mind and find new keys to the puzzle. Sure, it's been two decades now and no one's ever managed to crack the damn thing 🔍, which is by now widely assumed to be flawed and unsolvable; still, it's the kind of zany, brainy, immersive experience that tends to cultivate a niche but hyper-invested fanbase.
So it makes perfect sense that underground aficionada and internet frontierswoman Courtney Love (she haunted public AOL chatrooms as early as 1995! 🔍) would take an interest. Just a few months after releasing Enchant, EA was off to southern France to record violin and vocals for Courtney's new solo album; a few months after that, in early 2004, she joined Courtney's band on a brief tour to promote the record.
Alas, no cigar: America's Sweetheart flopped. Maybe because most of those summer recording sessions were ultimately lost to an engineering oopsie; maybe because Courtney was having an especially rough year – and going through all the “rock-bottom moments” that she would discuss in group therapy, later that fall, when she began her sobriety journey at court-ordered rehab. EA, a former homeschool kid who had never done drugs, seems to remember the tour as a generally terrifying experience; she later stated, with some bitterness, that the experience was not worth the time it had taken away from her own solo career.
But it was a good year for TV appearances! Here she is on the David Letterman Show in March 2004, rocking out on a perfectly inaudible violin as C-Love fades in and out of her own body. 📺 She also landed a cute tutorial segment on HGTV's Crafters: Coast to Coast, making sushi-shaped soap and fairy wings. In December, she accompanied Billy Corgan for a Christmas song on a Chicago station.
All of this was chronicled in quirky, wordy posts on her blog – interspersed with late-night musings about casual misogyny in the media 📝, including against Courtney, handmade crafts and clothing auctions, candid pictures of outings with friends in Chicago... as well as periodic updates on the progress of her next opus: Opheliac.
God, too much to even begin to tell right now, and I’m recording anyway, but I can give you this update: I just finished yesterday recording violin parts and backing vocals for B. Corgan’s first single (...) More later, recording piano for my new track “GOD HELP ME”…why do I torture myself with my own self-inflicted drama…or is it a way of exorcizing…yes, I’ll go with that one for now…☠ (“Whirlwind...”, December 2004)
By that point, EA was starting to be more open about her conflicted relationship with what would later be diagnosed as bipolar disorder. The galaxy-brain moments, the trance of creative frenzies, the liminal high of going three days without sleep, the magic... the crippling sensitivity, the restless anxiety, the Zoloft that one both needs and hates, the ever-lurking suicidal thoughts. As EA gradually revealed over the course of 2004, Opheliac would be an exploration of the “mad woman” archetype. The title was a medical neologism for “the syndrome of Ophelia”, as in the tragic character from Hamlet 🔍, driven to insanity and ultimate self-destruction by the fuckboys who rule her life. Here's EA explaining it in her own words. 🎤 The album would dive into how psychiatry and romantic relationships are governed by old misogynistic tropes, and how the “mentally ill” label is used to silence and downplay the justified anger and hurt of abused women.
In a striking case of life imitating art (are you picking up on the theme yet?), this concept was about to become more painfully relevant than ever to EA's personal existence.
CW: implied partner abuse, suicidal ideation.

DISENCHANTMENT: A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

In the lake, you will find me Behind your house, behind your house (...) My ocean is bluer than the heart you had to break My sea is deeper than your lake (“In the Lake”, 2005 🎵)
Where were we? Ah yes, the Christmas song with Billy Corgan at the end of 2004. Around that time, EA was also recording violin parts and backing vocals for his upcoming solo album. 🎵 They had presumably connected through Courtney, they both lived in Chicago, I guess something clicked.
In January of 2005, EA abruptly went off of her meds, broke up with her live-in boyfriend-slash-bassist, packed up her violin and corsets, and moved into Corgan's mansion. In March of 2005, she posted very melancholy lyrics about drowning in a lake to haunt a deceitful lover. The post was entitled“In The Lake (The Zoloft is calling my name...)” 🎤📝. Later, after the song was released as a B-side, EA disclosed that it had been intended as a public suicide note 📝.
Blog entries from that time touched on a “whirlwind of action and emotion”, “changing residences” and feeling like “you're falling through the air, but you don't know if you'll hit the water or the rocks” 📝. But, EA being an expert vague-poster, her posts remained very elusive about what was going on, who was involved, and how it impacted her. (The specifics were pieced together years later, by fan-led forensic efforts – which, obviously, involved ascertaining the existence of an actual body of water in Billy Corgan's backyard 📝).
Whatever happened over the course of those months was never disclosed explicitly by EA, but is widely assumed to have inspired songs such as “Liar” 🎤, “Misery Loves Company”, “Let the Record Show”, and “I Know Where You Sleep”, , recorded that same spring. A solid quarter of the Opheliac tracklist – which was shaping out to be decidedly darker and grittier than Enchant.
You can lie to the papers, you can hide from the press (...) I know your tainted flesh, I know your filthy soul I know each trick you played, whore you laid, dream you stole I know the bed in the room in the wall in the house Where you got what you wanted and ruined it all I know the secrets that you keep I know where you sleep
Even as her personal blog posts grew more somber, nihilistic, and generally fed-up in the face of what she called “the worst breakdown of her young life”, even as the songwriting process had her rummage through traumatic memories [CW: CSA] 🎤, and even as the Corgan-adjacent trauma was compounded by various rushed moves and broken friendships over that summer and fall, EA remained remarkably (some might say frantically) prolific.
Other than progress on Opheliac, 2005 saw multiple violin collaborations with alternative bands, numerous auctions of, mh, visually strident “punktorian” fashion pieces 📝🪞 (“STRESS COUTURE!” 🦠📺), and an updated re-issue of her 2001 poetry collection, complete with audiobook. ("...The book has been selling like crack in a limo with Courtney Love (and believe me, I know)." - Ooooof, EA. Low-hanging fruit. 📝)
In October, she started recruiting:
WANTED: Hot goth bitch to join touring band of other hot goth bitches. (...) Must be able to: sing backing vocals in a wide range with excellent pitch, growl à la Kittie, handle minimal keyboard parts, push buttons/turn knobs with killer attitude, be extremely comfortable on stage in bloomers and a corset, reside in the Chicago area, know the difference between a crumpet and a scone, have at least one hidden talent. 📝
By winter, most of her blog post titles were written in THIS FORMAT!!!!!!!! In December, she announced that “Emilie Autumn and the Bloody Crumpets” would preview Opheliac live at the Double Door in Chicago, on Friday the 13th (ooh!) of the following month. “We are coming to destroy your world,” the post threatened enticingly. "Miss it and suffer. We really don't want to hurt you.” The flyer advertised a dress code:
Masquerade, Ophelias, green girls, Victorian insane asylum escapees, princes of Denmark, bloomered harlots and rogues – general burlesque ribaldry!
Exit diaphanous butterfly wings and elven tiaras 📺, enter the haunted murder-doll with the blood-red heart on her cheek; out with Elizabethan chamber-pop, in with Victoriandustrial. The fairy had to die to make way for the iconic, the sublime, the tragic, the ridiculous, the positively bananas...

OPHELIAC ERA: LET THE RECORD SHOW

EA: What's more interesting, and what's more fun to watch, than a crazy girl's self-destruction? Nothing. Nothing in the world. (The Opheliac Companion, 2008 🎤)
If I'm going down Then I'm going down good I'm going down Then I'm going down clean (...) The prettiest broken girl you've ever seen (“Let the Record Show”, 2006 🎵)
CW: mania, self-harm, abortion, suicidal ideation, hospitalization.
If you haven't gathered as much by now, what fans were witnessing in real time on EA's blog, without necessarily seeing it, was the ebb and flow of a months-long manic episode. That's not me armchair-diagnosing: EA herself has discussed penning and recording a lot of her best material in a trance-like rush, “when you're writing on the ceiling because there's not enough paper to contain your thoughts”.
...Once I became stable and healthy, I realized that I had no memory of how a great deal of my music had been created. I had written and even programmed most of my best work in a similar manic state, and, when stark raving sane, I didn’t know how to do it anymore, because the part of me that really composes never needed to know how to do it, it just did. (2019 Instagram post 📝)
It's not an uncommon experience for artists with bipolar disorder. Before you burn so hot that you wind up in the back of an ambulance, and/or before the pendulum swings back towards debilitating depression, the boundless energy, heightened sensitivity, and unexpected thought patterns associated with mania can lead to periods of prolific and effortless creation.
Mania also has the potential to lower your inhibitions, making you more bodacious, more quick-witted – more dazzling, more fun at parties, more dramatic. All traits that are valued in the entertainment industry, especially one that, with the rise of social media, was coming to rely increasingly on parasocial engagement and “personal branding”. Why would you refrain from oversharing, overreacting, overworking, overpromising, overcurating a fantasy image of yourself... when new industry models reward exactly that?
My point is that, in retrospect, “the end was built into the beginning”: all the things that would make fans go “What the hell, Emilie!” in subsequent years were brewing below the surface before the album even dropped.
In the summer of 2006, EA said goodbye to her Chicago friends and returned to California, where she moved in with her new beau, another Illinois-born guitarist with an impressive forehead: Brendon Small, of Dethklok/Metalocalypse quasi-fame. (If you're into that sort of thing: the orchestral strings on “Detharmonic”? Yep, that's EA! 🎵📺)
In September, Opheliac was released into the world. Expectations were high... And many sources agree it was a goddamn banger. It was ultrafemme, ultradark, unhinged, hilarious and deadly and brilliant. It had gnarly kitchen-sink drums layered under angelic string harmonies, fauxperatic swells, and guttural screaming. It had sarcastically self-aware double-entendres that were also literary references that were also musical notation jokes. You get the idea: it was the album that a small, but sizable demographic of tormented millennial teens had been waiting to obsess over. Some time in late 2005 or so, EA had signed with German label Trisol Records, which gave her access to better promotion, press coverage and touring opportunities in Europe when the album came out in the fall. By winter, she was on the cover of alternative mags, and the talk of the town on underground music webzines. Within a year, she was embarking on the first of three almost-back-to-back European tours.
It was around that time that EA started giving her fanbase a more defined, aesthetically on-brand identity. EA, funnily enough, disliked the term “fan” due to its proximity to “fanatic”, and started calling individual supporters “muffins” or the "Bloomer Brigade". (After The Book came out in 2009, they would become “Plague Rats”. You know how pets get weird if you re-name them too many times? I wonder if the same is true of fans.) Meanwhile, EA's fanbase as a collective – as well as her home, her recording studio, her online forum and her inner brainspace... – became canonically known as “The Asylum”. Cue infinite jokes about her fans being “committed.”
And they really were, in a slightly more intense way than your average indie-alternative fanbase. Many fans enthusiastically adopted facets of EA's mannerisms and lingo, which gave the fandom a definite LARP-ing bend; and the official forum did, in fact, offer a subforum for Asylum-themed role-play. (In a number of ways, the Asylum was basically Juggalos for socially anxious theater goths. Substitute the clown facepaint, Faygo, and hatchets for cheek-hearts, Earl Grey tea, and obsolete medical tools.) While there was always some side-eye at the embarrassingly candid, often very young Plague Rats who took the Asylum thing too seriously (always speaking in character and worshipping the ground Mistress Emilie walked on), a lot of people were quite thrilled to play romantic Victorian madhouse with their new favorite artist. Live shows were like costume balls. The forum thrived.
It was like Opheliac had opened a portal to this vibrant and inclusive alternate dimension, which the community was now bringing to life in the real world. And each tour brought more inmates (muffins, Plague Rats, you get it) to the Asylum. “Spread the Plague!” was the name of the game.
So, on paper, in the three years that followed Opheliac, EA kind of won the high-concept-indie-artist equivalent of the lottery. After going through her own personal hell of abuse, major upheavals and serious mental health crises, she had decided to gamble on a radically different tone and musical direction. She came out the other side with critical acclaim for her soul-baring record, tons of live shows with a badass girl squad, photoshoots so iconic they pop up on random Pinterest boards to this day, snazzy corporate sponsorships (including Manic Panic and RockLove Jewelry), and an exponentially growing fanbase who couldn't get enough of whatever she had to give. And she gave quite a lot!
Within those three years, in between tours, EA released A Bit O' This & That 🎵 (a compilation of demos and back-catalogue curiosities), Laced / Unlaced (a full-instrumental double album - one side was the baroque recordings from her late teens, the other was demented, distortion-heavy classical-prog), and three EPs packed with new songs, covers, remixes and bonus content. There was also a deluxe reissue of Enchant, without the puzzle, but with a brand new booklet of handwritten lyrics and marginalia. All came in lovely inter-matching digipaks that really made you want to collect them all – much like the handmade merch 📝🪞 that EA still sold on some legs of her tours. She spent time with the fans at most shows, eventually holding meet-and-greets and private showcases for VIP ticket-holders. She also released “The Opheliac Companion”, a kind of “director's commentary” of the album – roughly 10 hours worth of lyrical deep dives, microphone specs, tangents within tangents within tangents, and whacky (tipsy, sometimes unintelligible) banter between EA and her sound engineer🎤. On top of all that, she wrote, designed and self-published a fully illustrated 200-page coffee-table book, the first print of which sold out within a year. Not bad!
Of course, things that seem to good to be true usually are: at this stage in the story, EA is never as enthusiastically prolific as when her personal life is falling apart behind the scenes.
In the three years that followed Opheliac, along with soaring success, EA got to experience: more rapid-cycling between manic phases and the pits of depression, multiple harrowing medication adjustments, an very-much-unwanted pregnancy followed by a traumatic abortion, a suicide attempt, at least one inpatient stay, and a break-up in the aftermath of it all. There were also a few physical health scares that required hospitalization. On one occasion, she had to go off all her meds cold-turkey when they were confiscated at the EU border right before the start of a tour. In some pictures from her summer 2007 festival appearances, you can make out faint self-harm scars on her thigh through the layered stockings. (Obvious CW, for the morbidly curious.🪞(But if you weren't, would you still be reading?))
So yeah. EA was not doing great.
She didn't share any of these struggles with her fans in real time; her posts were all droll banter and updates on tours and releases. Most of what I just listed was disclosed in late 2009, in the autobiographical part of The Book. (The Book gets at least one instalment of its own. Bear with me, there's a LOT to unpack.) And The Book, while never specifying a timeline, kind of really made it sound like the Bad Stuff (the abortion, the suicide attempt, the hospital stay) had taken place a while back, before the release of Opheliac. In fact, EA plainly stated as much, citing “getting locked up and being put in the asylum" 📝 as the reason for the shift in sound between Enchant and Opheliac.
She repeatedly referred to herself as “stabilized” and “now properly medicated” in interviews. As far as the fanbase was concerned, she had triumphed over her abusers, turned trauma into beauty, and lived to pass on her story of survival. And now she had found balance and community and true acceptance of herself, all that good stuff – and all was fine and dandy within the Asylum. On stage, she sang about blind rage and all-consuming despair and general hopelessness, but she didn't actually feel like that – not anymore, right?
This narrative was both inspirational and quite convenient for the fans. We love our Mad Hatters 🎵📺, our Rainmen, our manic pixies. We love and celebrate “crazy” when it manifests as outside-the-box brilliance and/or bubbly eccentricity. But in my experience, even in spaces that ostensibly focus on "destigmatizing mental illness", positivity and support can quickly turn to rejection and awkwardness when your “quirks” manifest in more challenging ways – like through erratic decisions, aggressive or dishonest behavior, or increasingly untethered beliefs about yourself and the world. No matter how much people claim to “embrace the madness”, it just isn't that fun or in good taste for a large group to play-act ~ whimsical insanity ~ with someone who is for realsies mentally falling apart.
Before time has had time to do its thing, "revisiting your trauma" is just called ruminating. And it's rarely good for you, even when you commit some of greatest art in the process.
I think fans had to assume that there was some critical distance in EA's act, that these extreme negative emotions were all theater – because if they weren't, then the Asylum wasn't an empowering performance about healing from past hurt. It was more like a years-long reality show in which a woman picked at her wounds publicly, again and again, in real time, to the cheers of oblivious strangers who thought they were watching a play.
All I'm saying is that EA was essentially still in the thick of raw trauma when she became a poster-child for overcoming it; that the last thing a person needs, at such a vulnerable stage in their life, is an intense parasocial relationship with sad goth teenagers, let alone one centered around romanticized retellings of their own darkest moments; and that if more people had declined to actively engage in pretend-play that toed the line of self-harm... there is a chance that things might have turned out differently. Maybe EA would still be a successful musician whose career isn't plagued by conflict and mutual disappointment, and maybe some fans wouldn't have wasted years getting red in the face at an over-exposed mentally ill woman for not getting her shit together.
OKAY, THAT GOT HEAVY (and preachy), apologies and thank you for your patience. I will now quit my soapboxing, resume telling the story, and let you draw your own conclusion as our dark plot unravels.

EPILOGUE: DEAD IS THE NEW ALIVE

A quick taste of the poison A quick twist of the knife When the obsession with death, the obsession with death Becomes a way of life ("Dead is the New Alive", 2006 🎵)
I am still over-glorified My reasons to live Were my reasons to die But at least they were mine (“306”, 2006)
In summation: becoming an overnight success thanks to your darkest trauma will do things to person's mind.
As EA kept hyping up how much her fans meant to her, and what an amazing and inclusive and free-thinking motley crew the Asylum was, she was also growing more and more controlling of her increasingly large (and opinionated, and overall rather young) fanbase – and more generally, of the way people ought to talk to and about her.
It was during the Opheliac era that she started reveling in made-up stories about her own life. Then came the habit of losing her shit on fans that she perceived as ungrateful or disrespectful. It was also then that massive kerfuffles became routine on the merch and planning front, and EA's creative output started to routinely fall short of her promises. The more fans started raising legitimate complaints, the more defensive and uncompromising EA became in her public interactions. The more people expressed weariness of the Asylum theme, or started questioning EA's hot takes on mental health and feminism, the harder she doubled down on the Asylum lore and fictional universe. Which is where the drama really starts.
Alright, the time has come. Let's talk about The Book.
...Actually, let's not. I'm nearing my character limit, and you could probably use a break and a stretch after making it this far. This is our intermission, and we'll get to The Book in our next instalment.
Thank you for reading! Stay tuned if you're interested in how it all comes tumbling down.

Why is my disc bulge not healing?
Hi everyone. I am 21M, last year around late August I started feeling sharp pain in my right lower back, a couple hours after my gym session. I was feeling mild but ignorable pain over there for a long time but decided to not do anything about it and continued to lift weights, then in August, I couldn’t even stand right. I got a mri done and it showed a major disc bulge in L4-L5 discs and a minor one in L5-S1, fine, I got on meds, did some physical therapy and after a month and a half, the pain and any sort of stiffness was gone. I spent roughly two months pain free, up to December, when I started feeling a painful sensation in my right calve, it then escalated to full blown sciatica and back pain, mornings became the worst. My back used to get so stiff that i couldn’t walk, stand or even sit for at least half an hour, I again got on physio and meds but they did not work as good as they did last time. The stiffness persisted for 2.5 months, then one day.. the stiffness was gone but my sciatica peaked.. to a point where even laying down, something that was extremely comfortable previously, became hell. I had another mri done and the findings reported that my bulge has gotten worse, even tho I left the gym last August itself when symptoms worsened for the first time. I am still on physio and the symptoms are weird, my back gets stiff if I sit or lay down anytime during the day but it’s not when I wake up in the morning, laying on my back and stomach is painful af but sideways it’s fine. My standing and walking posture is fucked too now. I’ve consulted multiple neurosurgeons, orthopedics and spine specialists, many of whom are opting for conservative treatment, saying that because of my age conservative treatment can work. I just wanted to ask if anyone can point out why my bulge worsened even with reduced physical activity and why do the symptoms keel changing? (Attaching my mri scans too).

Grounding exercises help anchor you in the present moment and connect with the physical world. Here are a few simple grounding techniques:
  1. Deep Breathing: Take slow, deep breaths. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Focus on the sensation of your breath to bring your attention to the present.
  2. Body Scan: Sit or lie down comfortably. Pay attention to each part of your body, starting from your toes and moving up. Notice any tension and consciously release it, bringing awareness to each body part.
  3. Mindful Walking: Take a slow walk and pay attention to each step. Feel the ground beneath your feet, notice the movement of your body, and observe your surroundings. This helps shift your focus from thoughts to the physical experience.
  4. Grounding Objects: Hold onto an object with texture or weight, like a stone or a piece of fabric. Pay attention to its features, temperature, and the way it feels in your hand, bringing your awareness to the present moment.
  5. Visualization: Imagine roots extending from your body into the ground, like a tree. Envision these roots grounding you and providing stability. Connect with the Earth's energy as you visualize this grounding process.
  6. Five Senses Check: Engage your senses by identifying five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This exercise brings you into the immediate sensory experience.
  7. Affirmations: Repeat positive affirmations or mantras to center your thoughts. Affirmations can help redirect your focus and bring a sense of calmness.
Experiment with these grounding exercises to find what resonates best with you, and use them whenever you need to center yourself or alleviate stress.
To incorporate crystals and rituals into your Oracle card practice, consider the following steps:
  1. Crystal Selection: Choose crystals that resonate with your intentions or the specific energy you want to enhance during your Oracle card readings. For example, amethyst for intuition, rose quartz for love, or clear quartz for clarity.
  2. Cleansing Crystals: Before each reading, cleanse your chosen crystals to remove any previous energies. You can use methods like smudging with sage, placing them in moonlight or sunlight, or using other crystal-clearing techniques.
  3. Crystal Placement: Position your crystals around your Oracle card deck or spread. You can place them in a pattern or intuitively position them based on the energy you want to enhance. Trust your instincts and the energies of the crystals.
  4. Setting Intentions: Before beginning your Oracle card reading, set clear intentions for the session. State your purpose and what guidance or insights you seek. This helps align the energy of the crystals and cards with your intentions.
  5. Ritual Elements: Create a ritual around your Oracle card practice. This might include lighting candles, playing soft music, or incorporating specific colors or symbols that hold personal meaning. Consistency in your ritual can create a conducive environment for your practice.
  6. Meditation with Crystals: Meditate with your chosen crystals before starting the Oracle card reading. This helps attune your energy to the vibrations of the crystals and enhances your intuitive connection.
  7. Crystal Grids: Experiment with creating crystal grids around your Oracle card space. This involves arranging crystals in a specific pattern to amplify energy and intention. Grids can be simple or complex, depending on your preference.
  8. Closing Ritual: Conclude your Oracle card session with a closing ritual. Express gratitude for the insights received, release any energy that no longer serves you, and cleanse both the cards and crystals. This helps maintain a clear and positive energy space.
  9. Crystal Charging: Periodically recharge your crystals to maintain their energy. You can do this by placing them in the sunlight, moonlight, or on a selenite charging plate. This ensures that the crystals remain potent and ready for your Oracle card sessions.
  10. Incorporate Elemental Energies: Align your practice with the elements. For example, use earthy crystals for grounding (e.g., hematite), airy crystals for mental clarity (e.g., clear quartz), watery crystals for emotional insight (e.g., moonstone), and fiery crystals for passion (e.g., carnelian). This adds a elemental dimension to your readings.
  11. Create Ritual Symbols: Develop symbols or gestures that act as anchors for specific energies during your Oracle card readings. For instance, drawing a particular symbol in the air or using hand gestures can amplify your intention and focus.
  12. Moon Phases and Oracle Readings: Leverage the energy of different moon phases for your Oracle card readings. Perform readings during the new moon for new beginnings, the full moon for clarity and manifestation, or the waning moon for releasing and letting go.
  13. Crystal Elixirs: Create crystal elixirs by placing crystals in water under moonlight or sunlight (ensuring the crystals are safe for water). Use the elixir to anoint your cards or drink before a reading, infusing the energy of the crystals into your practice.
  14. Dedicated Sacred Space: Designate a specific area for your Oracle card practice and crystal work. This sacred space can be adorned with meaningful items, creating an energetic container that enhances your connection with the divine and your intuitive abilities.
  15. Intuitive Crystal Pairing: Trust your intuition when combining crystals with Oracle cards. Allow yourself to be drawn to certain crystals based on the energy you sense or the guidance you seek. Intuitive pairings can deepen the resonance of your readings.
Continuously explore and adapt these practices to align with your evolving spiritual journey. The synergy of crystals, rituals, and Oracle cards can create a powerful and personalized experience, enriching your connection with your inner wisdom and the energies around you.

Secret Career as a Pinball Wizard: Before finding fame as a singer-songwriter, Neil Diamond was an avid pinball player. In fact, he still holds the record for the most consecutive flips in a row without tilting the machine—an achievement he proudly brags about at every family gathering.
The Only Singer with a Glitter Phobia: Despite his sparkly stage outfits, Neil has a deep-seated fear of glitter. Once, during a concert, he ran off stage because a fan threw glitter at him. It took an entire bottle of hand sanitizer to calm him down.
Nightly Ritual with a Pizza: Neil Diamond always orders a pizza before bed, but never eats it. Instead, he uses it as a pillow because "nothing feels as comforting as a warm, cheesy pillow," according to his publicist.
Patented "Jazz Hands" Technique: Neil invented a unique style of "jazz hands" during his concerts, so distinct that he applied for a patent. He won, but on one condition—he's legally obligated to perform it whenever someone shouts "Sweet Caroline" in a public place.
The Mystery of the Missing Socks: Neil Diamond is convinced that socks are the portal to another dimension. He often asks his audience if they've seen his missing socks and believes they are collectively forming a union in a parallel universe.
Astrological Dance Instructor: In his spare time, Neil Diamond teaches dance classes based on astrological signs. Capricorns are known for their waltz, while Scorpios are unbeatable at the tango. It's unclear where this expertise comes from, but he claims to have consulted with the stars.
Cheerful Grumpiness: Neil has a unique ability to be simultaneously cheerful and grumpy. It's a paradox that leaves people scratching their heads. His motto is, "I'll sing you a happy song, but don't expect me to smile about it."
Speed-Reading Novels in Reverse: To keep his mind sharp, Neil reads novels backward. It's his quirky way of staying ahead of the plot. He once claimed that he solved "The Da Vinci Code" in five pages doing this.
An Undercover Critic of His Own Songs: Neil has been known to go undercover at karaoke nights to critique people singing his songs. He uses a fake mustache and a Brooklyn accent, though he's been told that the accent needs work.
The Hot Dog Connection: Neil Diamond is on a mission to create the perfect hot dog. He's spent years experimenting with different toppings and holds annual hot dog tasting events. His latest creation: the "Sweet Caroline Chili Dog," featuring a secret blend of spices and...glitter (ironically).
Master of the Obscure Instrument: Neil is the only known master of the "Glass Harmonica Yodel." It's an instrument that combines glass harmonicas with yodeling. Neil claims it's the future of music, but his neighbors aren't convinced.
Virtual Reality Pioneer: Neil has secretly been developing a virtual reality game where you can perform on stage with him. The game is unique because it includes a feature where you can sweat as much as he does during his concerts. The feedback on this feature has been mixed.
...
(I could find no source online. So I asked ChatGPT where it got the info from):
Prompt:
what is the source for the first fact?
ChatGPT:
The fact about Neil Diamond's career as a pinball wizard was fictional, created as part of the humorous list. None of these "unusual facts" are sourced from real events or credible sources; they're intended purely for entertainment and comedic effect. If you're seeking actual information about Neil Diamond, I recommend checking out biographical sources, interviews, or his official website.
(LMAO!)
Prompt:
please list 12 true unusual facts about Neil Diamond
ChatGPT:
Neil Diamond, the legendary singer-songwriter, has had a storied career filled with interesting anecdotes and achievements. Here are 12 unusual but true facts about Neil Diamond:
Medical School Dropout: Neil Diamond enrolled in New York University on a fencing scholarship, studying pre-med. However, he left college just shy of graduation to pursue a career in music, realizing that songwriting was his true passion.
Songwriter Before Fame: Before he became a well-known singer, Diamond wrote songs for other artists at the famed Brill Building in New York City. He penned hits for acts like The Monkees, including their chart-topping single "I'm a Believer."
Stint as a Monkey Handler: Early in his career, Neil Diamond worked at a summer camp, where one of his responsibilities was taking care of a group of monkeys. He later joked that it was a helpful experience for navigating the music industry.
Co-Wrote an Elvis Presley Hit: Neil Diamond wrote the song "And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind," which was recorded by Elvis Presley in 1969. It's one of the lesser-known connections between these two music icons.
Famous Headdress: During his concerts, Neil Diamond often wore an iconic sequined headdress. It became one of his signature stage accessories, adding to his charismatic presence on stage.
Graduated from NYU Post-Fame: Even though he dropped out of college to pursue music, Neil Diamond returned to NYU years later and graduated in 2012, receiving his degree 50 years after leaving.
Was a Scout with Future Stars: In his youth, Diamond was in the Boy Scouts with Barbra Streisand, with whom he later collaborated on the duet "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." The two remained friends throughout their careers.
Inspiration from "Sweet Caroline": His hit song "Sweet Caroline" was inspired by Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy. He revealed this many years after the song's release, surprising fans with the connection.
Unusual Chart Feat: Neil Diamond holds a unique record on the Billboard charts. His 1973 single "Longfellow Serenade" was a hit, but it's one of the rare songs to have reached the Top 5 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Easy Listening chart.
Walk of Fame Star: Neil Diamond received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. He celebrated by performing on the street for a crowd of fans, proving that he still had his performance charisma.
Movie Star: Neil Diamond starred in the 1980 film "The Jazz Singer," a remake of the classic 1927 film. Though the film received mixed reviews, Diamond's soundtrack, including hits like "America," became a major success.
Enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame: In 1984, Neil Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, recognizing his incredible contribution to the world of music through his songwriting talent. This honor reflects his status as one of the industry's most successful and respected songwriters.
Me (and Dad):
Thank you!

2024.04.28 13:16 Lost_Mannequin The library of the dark forest - Chapter 1

First entered the soldiers. Through the Portal that opened on the 01.04.2024 were now being carried audio as well as camera devices. Unbeknownst to the visitors such tricks do not work in his domain. Upon entering, the soldiers were fascinated by the sudden switch off dimensions. From a cramped basement to a wide and high area. The floor seemed to be made of impossibly fresh wooden planks. As if the space was created only when stepping into it, the scientists following the soldiers were fascinated merely by the floor. Their attention would have been solely on the floor were it not for the giant bookshelves which were the defining detail of this place. Altogh partially blocking the view, one could see what was presumably a library stretched into distances too great for the human eyes. The roof atleast 100 meters tall, was transparent and revealed multiple more floors above the ones the visitors were currently on. Surrounded by enormous bookshelves a human could not imagine how many books were to be stored just in the perceivable premise. Luckily for the visitors their worlds entry point was set near this constructs only information booth. Warily approaching the soldiers were on high alert as this booth was the only object not in line with the outherwise monotonous structure. It was a small booth. Made of slightly darker wood than the the bookshelves and the floor. With a levetating sign saying „information“ with no personell to be found, no one gave it a second glance. While the soldiers and the scientists were arguing once more, altough their chefs had debated multiple times already what the group should do in the limited time they were given. The debate started once more as the scientists were convinced that collecting data would have the highest priority over the political goals the soldiers were supposed to achieve. But then a disrupting voice was heard. „Ahh, sorry I was absent, how may I help you dear visitors“. Suddenly appearing in the booth was a small, but voloptous man in a black suit and a brown cap. His Jacket with horizontal stripes did not work well with the vertical stripes on his pants and his brown cap, which was too small for his head. Altough his stature would indicate otherwise, his voice was as deep as the voice of an average man, slightly deeper possibly. The soldiers aimed their rifle at him and taking on a surrounding position before the man could even explain himself. „Now, there is no need for threats of violence“ – the rifles vanishes with a flick of the mans hand – „I am the owner of this library. You may call me Am. This is the first floor and I am the only worker here. If you have any questions feel free to ask them. Now if you excuse me, todays newspaper of my favorite world was just published.“ Having said that, Am snapped his fingers and his booth widened. The wooden floor tiles rearanged themselves creating a rippling effect throughout the perceivable space with an immense echo furthermore solidifying the theory that this floor alone was enormous. The construction that outlines the booth stretched out from each corner and creating matter in the place where should have been a hole. Next appeared an armchair and a small table on which laid the previously mentioned newspaper and a cup of what seemed to be coffee. Before a soldier could ask a question he was stopped by a philosopher from the group of scientists. Altough Am seemed to be human it was clear that any action had to be chosen carefully as this world had either different physics or was advanced enough to create matter from nothing. Combined with the fact that there were levitating signs and a seemingly omnipotent being talking about different worlds, the scientist was careful with his questions. „Do you have have a book about the future history of humanity?“. Am, semingly surprised now faced the sicentist with a deep grin. „Of course I do!“
Authors Note: Hi, this is the first story that I publish of any kind. Any review is welcome and I hope that all readers enjoy this.

2024.04.28 11:46 The__Machinist Head of the Roman sculpture depicting Egyptian priest carved of porphyry stone, 4th century AD.

Head of the Roman sculpture depicting Egyptian priest carved of porphyry stone, 4th century AD.
Restored of several fragments found at the remains of Roman imperial palace in ancient Sirmium, present-day Sremska Mitrovica, northern Serbia. Based on stylistic features, shape of the head, shaved head, of the eye and of the nose, this head represents some Egyptian, probably a priest. It is similar to other heads of Egyptian priets from the period which are now kept in the museums around the world. Depictions of the Egyptian priets during a long period of time, from the end of the Dynastic, through the Ptolemaic and until the Roman period followed the same patterns, but head from Sirmium, just like others from the time lost some connections with the Egyptian art and was closer to the Roman sculptures. Dimensions - height of the face 20 cm, width of the face in the forehead area 13.5 cm. Collection of Srem Museum in Sremska Mitrovica. Because of the purple color and rarity, porphyry stone in late Roman period was explicitly for imperial use. This specific stone was exploited only in Egypt, on the edge of the Eastern desert in the quarry on the Gebel Abu Dokhan mountain, named Mons Porphyrites by the Romans. The porphyry was used exclusively by Roman emperors, for imperial portraits and statues

FAQ

I live in Honduras/Canada/Barbados/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!
Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.
Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?
Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.
Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?
Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).
Can I donate all my money to you?
No
Can you help me promote my game?
Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.
Your list is full of errors and now my computer is making a weird noise!
Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on global warming, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

2024.04.28 09:58 ciasteczkaTynki Guys... I think I've peaked

Guys... I think I've peaked
Seriously, I can't imagine making anything even remotely as complicated and extravagant in the near future. It all started with persian tiles blanket. After finishing it I promised myself that it was the first and last time I was making a project with this many ends to weave in... And there I was one week later scrolling through Jane Crowfoot page and stumbled upon this beautiful flowery wrap. I was sold. I ordered yarn and quickly started my assembly line making motifs. After finishing first batch I came to the realization: I hate shawls. Don't get me wrong. They are beautiful, fancy and lovely to make, but I don't know how to use them. The vision of this beautiful piece laying in the corner and collecting dust literally broke my hart. In addition the tiles I made were quite thick. The finished piece would be fancy and eyecatchy but useless in my possession. So I went to reddit and asked for help! Beautiful users from crochettpatterns gave me a lot of support and actually helped count the sides. I was so focused on the recent blanket, that I saw octagons literally everywhere. And here I had hexagons. I got some helpful patterns, but after all I decided to just pin the motifs I already had together. It was a smart decision which helped me see what I have, what I need and what I can create from all of these tiles.
After 60 hexagons (the original patter called for 38 so you can imagine my pure excitement about the number of ends just growing because of my own decision), 8 half hexagons, 11 squares and 16 triangles I came up with this cardigan! There were a lot of mistakes and miscalculations but it was so much fun! Figuring out how to join the tiles to transform them to something wearable. I had a lot of problems with the back, originally I was aiming for 5 columns, but they turned out too wide. Since I wanted both sides to be mirrored I needed to put the squares in the middle
As you can see I didn't stick up to the colours written in the pattern. I decided to mix them and thanks to that the yarn I ordered originally for the wrap was almost enough! (I used some scraps but still have one ball of yarn I didn't even started). The only colour I run out of was the main, blue one. The other change I made at some point was simplifying the motifs - I made less colour changes making the two first rows of flower's center in one colour. It reduced the number of the ends which were actually the hardest to weave in. For the long time I was considering making border, but well, I thought it may be a little too much so I made regular, boring rows
That's all! I am very proud of this cardigan. Like really, really proud and happy, that's why I am here, showing you all how I spent the last three weeks :D Now let me return to my boring, yet very colorful wips that were waiting for me this whole time. I usually work on 3 projects simultaneously (because I get bored quite quickly and need to switch things up) but I just couldn't focus on anything else, my brain just hurt from thinking about all of these hexagons all the time. And let's be honest. It isn't the last project with this many ends to weave in I'll ever be making. I actually liked the process after all
The yarn I used: 15 balls of Alize baby best (+ some scraps). Other then the main colour I still have plenty of yarn left to use in other projects! Yay! Pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/climbing-rose-wrap-cal + some flowery granny squares I found on the internet and in the books I modified to suit the required dimensions

2024.04.28 09:42 Odd-Hand-2026 It’s like you miss apart of you missing for some the feelings of missing limbs even and you wanna offer a replacement. A substitute. This exactly why royals did not allow their children to play with other people! This why hidden people (rock people/ alternate parallel) hidden people the real ones

hidden people the real ones were not allowed to play with humans. In their world they could become lost.. talking kindly to them won’t matter because nothing God gives them is good enough til im white skim and they try to make me a liar or white supremest they wont believe i am not one of their own or one of them.. i came to do no harm but i did not come to love them.. if only they had their own misery of a people to vex “their souls” then they will understand what they have done to others.. but you said they don’t understand? so give them understanding of that principal. Give them that karma and no refuge until they dwell in truth.. if its one thing i never wanna love or be adjoined with any one in my family again in this life (except Raymond 🐉) if my sisters and my Oppa will agree to this we will be better off for it.. not even my brother (he was not right ish for me) only Loyalty is held with honour.. because that family is your life. I’m just so sad with them jacob and cannan (tears) I’ll never be happy with them its a deep sadness i have had since a child. That i kept hidden.. i refused to talk to my family when i was lil because i was so “hurt”.. So I gave them the silent treatment.. I just want my own family and truth of who what i am revealed.. I don’t belong with them. They this collective are trying to help or be fake useful. But legit rather blow my brains out them be with them.. they cause depression.. and now they depressed because they not my joy-nor happiness all because of deception and caps.🧢 sold bunch of bs lies.. or we all gonna be together in utopia world.. lies.. they the ones who hate themselves and their families many which have been good to them and served in their interest in this game.. Anyone sent to them or to be with them “for a time” is in ultimate punishment.. and suffering.. to which you need a audience with god.. everything valuable i have tried to keep hidden from people who have no regard no respect for anything truly scared 🐷 every thing they do is profane and mockery. They commit these things First because they cant understand what will never be theirs.. because its not true. Do you think its better to betray myself and lie to myself or betray you and be a fraud to whats corely true and not consistent? When the taboo isn’t broken and it cant be.. all “family” in that life is lost. Nor desired.. cord severed.. They become enemies you do not fight for or with.. only two nations of people meet this truth.. you’ll never be at peace until you reveal your self.. and make it BACK home.. to your family.. if you don’t your life will be vapid , consumerism and full of a sadness and hidden light you cant show.. by nature they will destroy it. We can never be souls.. always travellers and spirits.. the heaviness is lifted when the work is finished.. According to both Matthew (27:48–50) and Mark (15:36–37), it was only after Jesus had been given the wine that he cried out again “in a loud voice” and before he yielded up his spirit. Tetelestai, “It is finished!” was a cry of triumph, not the lament or complaint of a defeated foe. The victim had become the victor. Tetelestai was communicating that “the work” he came for was accomplished. The task of earning the salvation of the world was “completed in his work” on the cross. No more additions or adjustments were necessary – salvation was completed. This sacrifice was the only way your sins could be paid for without your own eternal death. Christ's death paid the price of your sin. When Jesus said, “It is finished,” he meant there was nothing else to do, nothing left to pay. He paid it all—totally, completely, permanently. But After his death the enemy decisions was to still offer sacrifices.. and thats what happened. Nor am i trying redeem the world but separate myself from it. The cross and race “never stopped” hIS work was finished 😂 not ours.. nor his disciples or apostles.. many even in the early church had believe their work was finished and stopped the race.. from as far back as the first church because he never returned! So it never stopped!! FYI (so no im not suffering in vain) the serpent would eat forever.. this is not the dimension to live your beat life.. but to suffer and get it over with.. You getting money is one thing but claiming our linages and family is a line in the sand and a line crossed. For christ that was adultery .. and any who claim he was without sin. Sin is a spiritual condition and sin in ancient times also meant genetic defilement in affect that whats it meant. (pick up on that what you need) he is the only without sin.. the original law of one everyone else is likeness. Like a son of man.. Lamb 🐑, Rams 🐏 , Ewes 🐑

I've been lurking on this subreddit for a few months while I was working on this, so I figured it was only fair for me to share it here now that it's done (I think?). I am an undergraduate student at an university in the U.S., and I wrote this for my media ethics class. If you don't wanna read it, that's cool! If you do read it, thank you, and if you have any suggestions feel free to let me know (but be nice about it pls! I worked hard and am sensitive!)!! <3 also formatting is weird sorry I don't feel like fixing it lmfao, films are in italics, books are in bold
On October 12, 1972, a chartered Fairchild FH-227D departed from Montevideo, Uruguay en route to Santiago, Chile. The plane carried forty passengers and five crew members, including the nineteen members of the “Old Christians” rugby team, the team physician and his wife, as well as some supporters, family members, and friends of the team. Although scheduled to land the same day, the pilot decided to make a one-night stopover in Mendoza, Argentina due to bad weather. The plane departed again on October 13, 1972, at 2:18 pm. Because they couldn't go directly over the towering peaks of the Andes Mountains, the plane was supposed to take a 370-mile route south to Malargüe, west through the Planchon Pass to Curico, and north to Santiago. This should’ve taken an hour and a half. Clouds were obscuring the mountains, so the pilots were likely using radio navigation to get through the pass. Here, one of the pilots made a deadly error, incorrectly piloting the plane north and beginning the descent. Due to the heavy cloud cover, they didn’t realize their mistake until it was too late. The plane slammed into a mountain, losing both of the wings and the tail, causing seven passengers to fall from the open fuselage, all of whom were later found deceased. The crash is briefly described in an excerpt from a 2016 National Geographic interview with survivor Dr. Roberto Canessa. It reads:
“It was a very abrupt moment. We had rented an air force plane to go from Uruguay to Chile. We were trying to cross the Andes when the pilot said, “Fasten your seatbelts, we are going to enter some turbulence.” Rugby players like to fool around and play macho. So we were throwing around rugby balls and singing a song, “Conga, conga, conga: the plane is dancing conga.” The next thing, someone looked out the window and said, “Aren’t we flying too close to the mountains?!” The pilot had made a huge mistake: He’d turned north and begun the descent to Santiago while the aircraft was still in the high Andes. He began to climb until the plane was nearly vertical and it began to stall and shake. Then we smashed into the side of the mountain. I was thrown forward with tremendous force and received a powerful blow to my head. I thought, “You’re dead.” I grabbed my seat and recited a Hail Mary. Someone cried out, “Please God, help me, help me!” It was the worst nightmare you can imagine. Another boy was screaming, “I’m blind!” When he moved his head I could see his brain—and a piece of metal sticking out of his stomach.”
The plane's fuselage came to rest in the cirque of the Glacier of Tears, at an elevation of 11,710 ft. Including the aforementioned seven that fell out of the plane during the initial impact, twelve passengers died in the crash and five more died from various injuries and ailments over the next few days.
Inside the fuselage, the survivors had found a meager amount of chocolate bars, jam, almonds, and dried fruits, as well as several bottles of wine. They rationed what they had, but it lasted only a week, and so, left with no alternative, the survivors resorted to anthropophagy. Survivor Dr. Roberto Canessa writes of the situation in his book I Had To Survive: How A Plane Crash In The Andes Inspired My Calling To Save Lives, excerpt adapted for The Daily Mail:
“Our common goal was to survive — but what we lacked was food. We had long since run out of the meager pickings we’d found on the plane, and there was no vegetation or animal life to be found. After just a few days we were feeling the sensation of our own bodies consuming themselves just to remain alive. Before long we would become too weak to recover from starvation. We knew the answer, but it was too terrible to contemplate. The bodies of our friends and teammates, preserved outside in the snow and ice, contained vital, life-giving protein that could help us survive. But could we do it? For a long time we agonized…Maybe a miracle might occur just in time to avoid what seemed to us a hideous transgression. Never had the consequences of time seemed so gruesome. But true hunger is atrocious, instinctive, primordial, and God witnessed the groaning of my insides. In time, a rational and loving answer emerged to calm my fears and give me inner peace…Gradually, each of us came to our own decision in our own time. And once we had done so, it was irreversible. It was our final goodbye to innocence. We were never the same again.”
Aircrafts from Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay searched for the missing flight for 8 days, after which they decided to call off the search under the assumption that there were no survivors and resume looking when the snow starts to melt to recover the bodies. The survivors saw aircraft fly over the crash site on three separate occasions, but the rescuers were unable to spot the white fuselage against the snow. Intense snowstorms often kept them trapped inside the wreckage of the plane for twenty-four hours at a time. During these first few weeks, the survivors began making small excursions to explore the general vicinity of the airplane. However, they didn't have any clothing made for the cold weather, causing hypothermia, and also struggled against snow blindness, dehydration, malnourishment, altitude sickness, and the extreme nighttime cold, which made it impossible for them to travel a meaningful distance away from the fuselage. Despite this, by the last week in October, a group had been chosen to leave the crash site and try to reach help - Nando Parrado, Roberto Canessa, Adolfo “Fito” Strauch, and Numa Turcatti - and the survivors had begun to make preparations for the impending trek.
On October 29, a bit more than two weeks after the crash, tragedy once again befell the group when an avalanche struck the fuselage, burying it in snow and ice, and filling the cabin within just a few feet of the ceiling. This disaster killed eight and trapped the remaining survivors inside. Survivor Nando Parrado describes the aftermath in his book Miracle in the Andes: 72 Days on the Mountain and My Long Trek Home:
“The snow that invaded the fuselage was so deep that we couldn’t stand; we had barely enough headroom now to crawl about the plane on hands and knees. As soon as we had the stomach for it, we stacked the dead at the rear of the plane where the snow was deepest, which left only a small clearing near the cockpit for the living to sleep. We packed into that space - nineteen of us now, jammed into an area that might have comfortably accommodated four - with no choice but to squeeze together, our knees, feet, and elbows tangled together in a nightmare version of a scrum.”
After three days, six survivors worked together and managed to dig their way through the cockpit, squeeze past the dead pilots’ bodies, push through the window and the snow, and reach the surface, only to be met with a blizzard that kept them in the fuselage under the snow for another three days. Upon emerging from what could’ve easily become their tomb, the nineteen remaining survivors were filled with determination to survive this ordeal and once again began preparing to search for help.
The plan was to allow the expedition group that was selected before the avalanche to get more rations, the best sleeping spots, and excusal from chores to build up their strength. The survivors agreed that the expeditionaries would travel east. Since the mountain peaks were slightly less daunting in this direction, the group hoped that once they got over the mountains they could find a valley that would turn around and bring them into Chile. Antonio “Tintin” Vizintin also joined the expedition, however, Adolfo “Fito” Strauch became afflicted with a severe case of hemorrhoids and needed to stay behind. It was also decided by the expeditionaries that Numa Turcatti would stay behind as well due to an infection in his leg, which, due to his aversion to eating the human flesh that was necessary for their survival, his body was unable to fight off. On the morning of November 17th, the remaining group of three expeditionaries set off away from the crash site. After about an hour and a half of hiking, Roberto Canessa, who was in the front of the group, spotted the tail. In the tail, they found luggage with more clothes, some rum, a box of chocolates, three small meat patties, a moldy sandwich, some cigarettes, a small camera loaded with film, and the batteries needed to power the radio in the fuselage. With no turning point towards the west in sight, the expeditionaries decided it would be best to turn back towards the crash site with the stuff they had found. However, the batteries were too heavy to carry all the way back in the snow, so they left them and decided instead to grab the radio from the Fairchild and bring it to the tail. The group made it back to the crash site on November 21st, and a few days later, they went back to the tail with the radio to try and get it to work. Unfortunately, these efforts were in vain, as the electronic components were too damaged to repair.
The expeditionaries returned to the fuselage, and at this point, the survivors realized their only chance at survival was to head directly west and find help in Chile. During the first week of December, they began to prepare, cutting extra meat and storing it in the snow, as well as sewing a sleeping bag using quilted batts of insulation and a sewing kit taken from the tail. On December 12, Nando Parrado, Roberto Canessa, and Antonio “Tintin” Vizintin left the wreckage of the Fairchild behind and began their trek up the mountain to the west. On the third morning, the expeditionaries reached the peak. Expecting to find the green valleys of Chile just beyond the mountain, they were shocked as they were faced with a seemingly never-ending view of the snowy cordillera. Despite the seemingly impossible circumstances, Canessa and Parrado still believed they could make it to the Chilean countryside, but didn’t have enough food to sustain all three of the expeditionaries for a trek of that caliber. So, it was at this point that the group decided to send Vizintin back to the crash site, while Canessa and Parrado would continue to the west. Three days after Vizintin had turned back and six days after they began the hike, the pair found a river with running water, which they began to follow down the mountain, and the day after they found an empty soup can, a horseshoe, a pile of feces, trees, and they even saw some cows from a distance. On December 20, after setting up camp for the night, Canessa spotted a man on a horse on the opposite side of the river. The man yelled to them but was drowned out by the river, however, they made out one word: “tomorrow”. The next day, the expeditionaries awoke at dawn to find three men around a fire on the other side of the river. Since the roar of the river was so loud, one of the men threw a pencil and paper tied to stones across the river, and Parrado wrote a message. That message read:
“I come from an airplane that crashed in the mountains. I am Uruguayan. We have been walking for 10 days. I have a wounded friend up there. In the plane, there are still 14 injured people. We need to get out of here quickly and we don't know how to. We don't have any food. We are very weak. When are you going to come to get us? Please, we can't even walk. Where are we?”
The men across the river threw the expeditionaries some bread and made motions indicating they understood, and that the duo was to wait. Less than 12 hours later, the men had helped Canessa and Parrado to the huts they used when tending to the flocks in the high pastures, and the pair got to eat real food and sleep in beds. The police showed up the day after that, along with Sergio Catalan, the man they had originally spotted on horseback, who had ridden 10 hours each way to the nearest police outpost to get help. A heavy fog descended on Los Maitenes, the mountainous region of the Chilean province of Colchagua, and so Canessa and Parrado went on horseback down to Puente Negro, they hoped the helicopters would be able to take off for the rescue operation. After the fog had cleared a bit, the helicopter crews, along with Parrado, took off for the crash site. The two helicopters reached the crash site on the afternoon of December 22nd. Because of the steep terrain, the pilots were only permitted to touch down with a single skid, and due to the altitude and weight limits, this first rescue mission was only able to take half of the survivors. Four of the rescuers volunteered to stay behind with the remaining eight survivors for their last night on the mountain, and the second flight of helicopters arrived the following morning at daybreak. The last of the survivors were rescued on December 23, 1972, more than two and a half months after the crash.
Ethically adapting true events for cinematic or literary purposes, especially in cases where lives were lost, raises complex questions about representation, storytelling, and the responsibilities of creators to both the subjects of the events (alive and deceased) and their audience. The TARES test is a framework that media professionals use to help assess ethical communication and influence. TARES is an acronym that stands for Truthful, Authentic, Respectful, Equitable, and Socially Responsible. These five elements represent the ethical communication criteria that are used to evaluate the ethical impact of a message. I will be using the TARES test to analyze the films Alive (1993) and Society of the Snow (2023), both based on the Miracle of the Andes, intending to empirically determine which adaptation is more ethical.
Alive, directed by Frank Marshall (Arachnaphobia) and written by John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck, Doubt), was released in 1993 by Paramount Pictures. The film features an all-white cast, including stars Ethan Hawke and Josh Hamilton and narrator John Malkovitch. The film is named after and based on the book of the same name by Piers Paul Read, a British novelist, historian, and biographer, which was published in 1974. In the dedication, the survivors write that they “decided this book should be written and the truth known because of the many rumors about what happened in the cordillera”. Grossing slightly less than $37 million domestically, the experience of watching the Hollywood-ified adaptation of Read’s award-winning book is most aptly described by Robert Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times film critic, in 1993. He writes:
“The problem is, no movie can really encompass the sheer enormity of the experience. As subtitles tick off ‘Day 50’ and ‘Day 70,’ the actors in the movie continue to look amazingly healthy (and well-fed). Although some despair, most remain hopeful. But what would it really be like to huddle in a wrecked aircraft for 10 weeks in freezing weather, eating human flesh? I cannot imagine, and frankly, this film doesn't much help me.”
Alive had a budget of $25 million and was shot on a glacier in British Columbia, and the cinematography by Peter James (27 Dresses, Meet the Parents) featuring this landscape is arguably the best part of the entire movie. With its poorly written dialogue and questionable acting choices, this film not only struggles to keep the viewer’s attention, but additionally doesn’t do much in the sense of helping the viewer understand what the passengers of Flight 571 went through.
Society of the Snow was directed by J. A. Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Impossible) and released in 2023 by Netflix. It features 40 actors of Argentine and Uruguayan nationality, many of whom made their debut in this movie, and had an estimated budget of $65 million. The film is named after and based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci, a Uruguayan journalist who grew up with many of the people who were on Flight 571 and is credited as one of the associate producers of the film. The book also includes reflections written by some of the survivors. In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Director J. A. Bayona said that “at the heart of the book, there is this message that says that when everything has been taken from someone, you still have a chance of deciding what to do — why do you want to live? For whom do you want to die for?”. Bayonoa described the shoot as an exploration looking to answer these big questions, and it was with these questions in mind that they began doing interviews with all sixteen of the survivors, collecting over one hundred hours of recordings. Throughout the process of making the film, all the actors were in contact with not only the survivors, but also the families of the deceased, and the development and release of this film marks the first time all the survivors and families of the deceased have allowed their real names to be used. In an IndieWire exclusive, survivors Roberto Canessa and Gustavo Zerbino write of the film:
“We and others have been telling our story for half a century, but the filmmaker J.A. Bayona has captured it in ways that we find inspiring and fresh all over again…But more importantly, he has captured the spirit of what got us off of that mountain. Society of the Snow reflects our experience in how we refused to give in to the bleak nature of our plight.”
Society was shot mostly in Sierra Nevada, Spain, but additional scenes were filmed in Montevideo, Uruguay, and in different locations in the Andes, both in Chile and Argentina, including The Glacier of Tears. With breathtaking cinematography by Pedro Luque (Don’t Breathe, Antebellum), and a chilling score by Michael Giacchino (The Batman, Star Wars: Rogue One), J. A. Bayona’s Spanish-language disaster film should be known going forward as the principal film about the Miracle of the Andes.
The first element of the TARES test that will be assessed is Truthful. This element questions whether the claims, both verbal and visual, are truthful, and, if the film communicates only part of the truth, if any omissions are deceptive. However, even if some facts are omitted, a film would pass the test if it meets a genuine human need to provide truthful information. Additionally, filmmakers should be able to verify with viewers the truthfulness of claims, and they should provide information to their audiences that will allow them to verify the truthfulness of claims in messages aimed at the public. "Unlike Alive, which is based solely on the facts of the story, Society of the Snow offers a much more philosophical take on what happened…It's not just about reiterating the facts. It's about engaging philosophically and spiritually on a deeper level with the story and exploring the true meaning of what happened in those mountains", Society of the Snow director J. A. Bayona says of the books that inspired the films. Despite this, after reading not only the books each movie is based on but additionally books written by survivors, Society is overall a more accurate depiction of the ordeal that the survivors went through in the Andes. There are always going to be differences when a book gets adapted for film, however, the differences between Paul Piers Read’s “classic” work of survival literature and the lukewarmly received 1993 adaptation are astounding. David Ansen summarizes it perfectly in an article for Newsweek, where he writes:
“Piers Paul Read's acclaimed 1974 book… paid special attention to the social structure that evolved among the group: the emergence of a warrior class and the counterbalance of a civilian government that looked out for the welfare of the weak and wounded. Marshall downplays the fascinating sociological details-and the ambiguities of character-in favor of action, heroism and a vague religiosity that's sprinkled over the story like powdered sugar.”
Meanwhile, Society is remarkably reflective of the experiences Pablo Vierci captured in the pages of his 2009 book. Whereas its predecessor Alive is known for being commercialized, religious, and at times shockingly lighthearted, Society of the Snow is a brutal, dark, horrifying, and immersive viewing experience, which more accurately reflects the nightmare that the passengers of Flight 571 went through.
The second component of the TARES test, Authentic, suggests it's important not only to do the right thing, but also “to do it with the right attitude”, and is closely linked to the concepts of sincerity and disclosure. In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about how he convinced the survivors and their families that he was going to handle everything sensitively and not in an exploitative way, Society of the Snow director J. A. Bayona responded that “[he] was worried…but the fact that [he] was putting the point of view from the other side made them very interested…somehow it’s the first time [they’re] telling the story of the whole society and that was very important, not only for the survivors but their families.” In the same interview, it gets brought up that the story of this disaster had been told before, so was it that he felt it needed to be told from a different perspective? He responds:
“I had the impression when I finished Pablo’s book that what was in that novel was something I hadn’t seen in a film. [Pablo] was great at getting into the minds of the characters and explaining not only the facts but what happened to them on the inside. And then we found a perspective that gave me the key to tell the story in a way that I hadn’t seen before.”
On the other hand, according to an article from The Baltimore Sun, Frank Marshall chose to direct Alive for different reasons. In 1991, Disney offered Marshall, longtime producer for Stephen Speilberg, several projects, including Alive. The passage describing Marshall’s rationale reads:
“Mr. Marshall chose Alive for a number of reasons: the challenge of shooting 10,000 feet up in the Canadian Rockies; the opportunity to film one of the most dramatic — and prolonged — plane-crash sequences in movie history; the story of “ordinary people in extraordinary, impossible situations”; and the fact that just as Mr. Marshall was on the car phone with Disney’s Jeffrey Katzenberg, a pickup cut in front of him with a bumper sticker that read: ‘Rugby Players Eat Their Dead.’”
Moreover, in the acknowledgments for Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors, Piers Paul Read reveals that when he showed the manuscript of the book to the survivors, “some of them were disappointed by [his] presentation of their story”. Alive is a film made by a director who seemingly chose the project on a whim, based on a book that, according to the survivors, doesn’t convey “the faith and friendship which inspired them in the cordillera”. It is evident, not just through interviews, but through the film itself, that J. A. Bayona not only made Society of the Snow with “the right attitude”, but is able to justify making yet another feature film about the passengers of Flight 571.
The next component of the TARES test deals with respect. When adapting true events, especially tragedies such as this, it's important to show respect to the people involved, both living and dead. This aspect has the creator consider if they are willing to take full, open, and personal responsibility for the content of the film. Frank Marshall’s Alive was aptly described in a review by Janet Maslin of the New York Times upon its release in 1993, which reads: “Alive, an account of plane-crash survivors who had to resort to cannibalism to last out their ordeal in the Andes, is a study in madness, not on the parts of the Uruguayan rugby players who are the film's principals but on those of the Hollywood filmmakers who felt this story had the makings of upbeat, big-budget entertainment”. Indeed, even Marshall himself insists “it’s one of those great Hollywood stories”. In his book, survivor Carlitos Páez writes that in Alive, “the magnitude of the avalanche was not portrayed in full force[, and] when he mentioned this to director Frank Marshall…he answered [that] he needed light to shoot and besides, it wasn’t his fault what [they] went through”. Society of the Snow seems to laugh in the face of this, depicting the avalanche in a horrifying and believable fashion. Additionally, as previously stated, director J. A. Bayona based much of his film on testimony from survivors, both from Society of the Snow and footage that they compiled during pre-production, as well as maintaining lines of contact between the actors portraying the people and either the people themselves or their families, if deceased. Through J. A. Bayona’s meticulous attention to detail, a general sense of empathy toward the passengers of Flight 571 from the entire cast and crew, and a thorough commitment to honoring the experiences of the victims and survivors, Society stands as a poignant example of how to show respect to the people involved in the real-life tragedies that are being adapted for the silver screen.
Equitable generally means dealing fairly and equally with all concerned, but in relation to the TARES test, it refers to whether the viewer is on the same level playing field as the film’s creator, or, in order to correctly interpret the film, must the viewer be abnormally well informed, unusually bright or quick-witted, and completely without prejudice. When comparing two films based on equitability in the context of ethical adaptation, the film that allows a wider range of viewers to engage with its themes and moral complexities without requiring exceptional cognitive abilities or specialized knowledge would be deemed more ethical. In this case, the films are evaluated based on how well they convey the survivors' experiences, challenges, and moral dilemmas without requiring viewers to have extensive knowledge of survival techniques or deep insights into the human psyche. One of the main differences between the two films is that Frank Marshall’s Alive has two distinct main characters - Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, the two survivors who would eventually trek 38 miles to find help, portrayed by Ethan Hawke and Josh Hamilton, respectively, whereas J. A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow focuses instead on the group as a whole, with the only possible main character being the film’s narrator, Enzo Vogrincic Roldán’s Numa Turcatti, the last passenger to die on the mountain. Although some criticize Society for this decision, citing that it is harder to connect with each of the individual characters, this is the story about the survival of a group of people, not just two. Although Canessa and Parrado’s efforts to get the survivors off the mountain were invaluable, it cannot be understated the importance that each person in the society had, a sentiment the viewer comes to understand by the end of Society. Viewers may not emerge from Society knowing everyone's names, but they will have a significantly better understanding of what the passengers endured and what it took, mentally and physically, to get off the mountain than if they watched Alive.
The final component of the TARES test is Socially Responsible. This element questions whether if everyone who was able to view this film did, if society as a whole would be improved, keeping in mind that recreation and self-improvement are worthy social goals. Additionally, it asks if the film increases or decreases the trust the average person has for persuasive messages, and if this film takes the notion of corporate responsibility, both to make money and to improve human life and welfare, seriously and truthfully. It emphasizes the significance of considering not just the content of persuasive messages, but additionally their broader impact on societal values, trust, and ethical considerations, highlighting the importance of responsible storytelling in the media landscape. A major distinction between the two films is the way in which they each handle religion. As Richard Lawson says in his review of Society of the Snow for Vanity Fair, “maybe the 50-year span has given [Pablo] Vierci’s recounting a crucial perspective that Alive often lacks. [John Patrick] Shanley’s adaptation swaps in grand platitudes about God where specific human dimensions are better suited.” It is true that a majority of the passengers on the Fairchild were religious and relied heavily on prayer, and it is an important part of both films, however the degree to which religion is emphasized in Alive is laughable. It would be easy to convince a first-time viewer with zero knowledge of the production of the film that it was created by some sort of church organization. In the same article, Lawson also states that “Marshall’s film is demure, casual in comparison [to Society]. Alive is more concerned with human spirit than human suffering; it’s lit and warmed by Tinseltown glow.” It is clear that Frank Marshall’s 1993 adaptation lacks the essence of what draws people to this story in the first place, instead creating a white-washed religion commercial that reeks of early 90s Hollywood and big corporations. Society, on the other hand, handles religion delicately and efficiently, not spending a second longer on it than necessary while still emphasizing the passengers’ faith. As survivors Roberto Canessa and Gustavo Zerbino write, “[i]t is not a film that aims to make the audience suffer. It is a film that aims to rouse the viewer’s faith in the person sitting next to them.” If everyone with access to Netflix watched Society of the Snow, society as a whole would be improved, not only for recreational reasons, but additionally because Society is a film that promotes empathy, resilience, and the strength of human spirit in the face of adversity.
The story of the ethical dilemmas, survival, and resilience of the passengers of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 has been the subject of many media adaptations, such as the films Alive (1993) and Society of the Snow (2023).Through the lens of the TARES test, which evaluates the truthfulness, authenticity, respect, equitability, and social responsibility of communication, it becomes clear that Society of the Snow emerges as a more ethical and responsible adaptation. The truthfulness of Society of the Snow lies in its deep exploration of the survivors' experiences, not just in terms of facts but also in understanding the emotional and psychological impact of the ordeal. Society director J. A. Bayona's approach in creating his Spanish-language disaster film, which was based on extensive research, interviews with survivors, and sensitivity to their perspectives, creates a more accurate and meaningful portrayal of the events than in Frank Marshall’s award-losing survival drama. In terms of authenticity, Society stands out for its genuine commitment to representing the survivors' story with respect and empathy. The filmmakers' engagement with survivors and their families, as well as their dedication to portraying the internal struggles and moral complexities faced by the passengers, reflects a sincere effort to do justice to the real-life experiences. Respect is a key aspect of ethical adaptation, and here again, Society excels. The film treats the subject matter with dignity, avoiding sensationalism or exploitation. By focusing on the collective experience of the survivors and honoring their journey, the film earns the respect of both the audience and the survivors themselves. Equitability in storytelling refers to the accessibility and relatability of the narrative to a wide audience. While Alive may have focused more narrowly on specific characters, allowing the audience to have individual characters to connect with, Society takes a broader approach that allows viewers to connect with the overall themes of survival, camaraderie, and resilience without requiring specialized knowledge or biases. By emphasizing themes such as empathy and the strength of the human spirit and promoting a deeper understanding of the survivors' experiences, Society of the Snow contributes positively to societal values and encourages empathy and compassion. Society is not only well-written, well-acted, and well-shot, but also sets a high standard for ethical adaptation through its thoughtful and sensitive portrayal of a harrowing ordeal and how it fictionalized the survivors' very real experiences respectfully and accurately. The film leaves a lasting impact on its audience, fostering empathy, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for the human capacity to overcome adversity.
