2024.05.15 23:19 Capable_Cockroach_19 Resources that I used as a CPE and EE major

Resources I used as a CPE and EE double major that helped a lot
Hello! I graduated last spring, but I wanted to share some resources for current students that either: - helped profoundly in my classes while taking them - taught me a lot and I wish I had them during my class
I’ll also share some of my thoughts on learning for these subjects that pulls away from just reading textbooks.
Anyways, here’s the list…
  1. “Code” by Charles Petzold. This is an incredible book that walks you through how a computer works from the very basics through solving problems with light switches to advanced computer architecture and software. I wasn’t a beginner when I read this, but it strongly reinforced my skills in the area.
  2. “A Student’s Guide to Maxwell’s Equations” by Daniel Fleisch. This is a short book that carefully walks through electromagnetic fields by explaining core equations step by step with lots of examples. It also includes several helpful problems with answers online on his website. Helped me get an A in my fields class and only took like 2-3 days to finish.
  3. “A Common-Sense Guide to Data Structures and Algorithms” by Jay Wengrow. It walks you through DSA in a simple way with easy problems (including coding) including solutions in the back of the book. Currently going through it and it’s a very enjoyable read.
  4. Professor Leonard’s video series on differential equations. It’s completely free on YouTube and it teaches you differential equations from the ground up with easy to follow videos that include examples he gives you time to solve first and then walks through step by step. Again, it’s literally free!
  5. Ben Eater’s build your own 6502 based computer series. This video series on YouTube shows you how to build an 8-bit computer from complete scratch using computer chips you connect on a breadboard. Teaches you circuits, digital logic, low level coding, and how computers work all in one. You can buy a cheap kit from him to do it yourself along to the videos. I put it on my resume since I led a club teaching others how to do it and I’m pretty sure it’s a big reason I got so many job offers.
So if you’ve noticed a pattern here, it’s that the resources are easy to read and are engaging with problems you can do (very critical) along with actual solutions to check your work or get unstuck. They’re all cheap (or free) and you can probably get all of these for free online. Personally, I found traditional textbooks hard to be consistent with and overpriced.
Best of luck in your studies everyone, I hope this helps!

2024.05.15 22:55 MisterSN95 Need Some Pointers - Underemployed Nearly a Year

I just moved to NYC in February after my wife landed a new role as an HR Manager in Manhattan. It's been a dream for both of us to move to Brooklyn for a while, but this wasn't the most ideal situation. She was laid off last year ($96k total comp) and so was I, but she found work and so we made the move. I was laid off last year making $83k total comp in Houston, TX and I managed to snag a consulting role for a small petroleum company ($50k), and got laid off shortly after by them too after they ran into some major accounting issues and laid off all new hires (HR, sales, marketing). I haven’t been able to land a new job in 8 months. We had a lifestyle built around us making $150k+ and since then we've moved out, sold half our belongings, gotten rid of all of our cars, downsized considerably, but also racked up credit card debt managing health costs without insurance and moving costs to get to NY.
I'm currently working part-time at an app development agency as a Content Marketing Associate in midtown Manhattan, but it's hardly enough to keep up with the cost of living in NYC and I can't lay the full responsibility of taking care of the household at my wife's feet, especially as we have more 2 family members moving in with us next month to finish college in NY. They'll be able to support themselves, so I'm not worried about paying for them - it's just a lot of responsibility that would be better managed if I had a full-time job.
I’ve done product marketing, social media, SEO, sales enablement, content creation and management, video production, and been in B2B SaaS, retail B2C, ERP, and app development since my first internship. Everyone I pass my resume to says it’s one of the best they’ve seen for my level of experience, including a graduate marketing professor from the University of Vermont. I have photography, graphics, video and marketing samples to provide every employer, yet … nothing.
I see ALOT of roles on LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter posting for $45-$60k and I do wonder how that’s enough for experienced applicants with 3-6 years of experience working in Manhattan, even if you lived way out in Queens bc it is NOT cheap. I apply anyways, beggers can't be choosers. But at the same time, are people really getting hired in NYC right now for marketing roles? I was told to shoot for $90-$130k for my level of experience. Alot of my friends are actually earning about $120k with some earning over $200k working as PMs and PMMs, without MBAs.
But I have been getting ghosted or outright rejected and I’ve applied to nearly 800 positions now (since last June). Initially, I was spamming applications, but then I decided to really hone in and just focus on what I'm good at and that's product and content marketing. Nearly 60 or so of my applications have been referrals so my network is pretty used up too. I've also been to maybe 10-12 tech and marketing networking events since getting here, even hanging out around NYU and Columbia's MBA students to see if they could refer me to any contacts they had from their previous roles. My network grew but nobody is actually hiring marketers.
Right now anything over $50k would help my family out with bills, even if it’s not the going rate for the city. But I’m surprised at how many people are suggesting that marketers should shoot for higher in NYC given my experience. I'll admit, I didn't enter into product marketing thinking I'd be making less than 6 figures by the time I was 5 years in but with COVID, inflation, all the stupid short-term contract roles and layoffs, yada yada yada; I'm not being picky. I just want to work for a good company, use my skillset, and provide for my family. I’m working part time as a content marketing associate for an app development agency so I’m keeping my resume up to date but it’s like an intern’s pay and like I said I’m coming up on 5 years of total experience; this current role isn't the most stimulating for me either. What can I do differently?
Also, here's my resume - destroy me or tell me what I can improve. Any help would be seriously appreciated. If anyone's in the NYC area and wants to meet up for a coffee or bagel, I'm so down at this point. I just need some help getting my foot in the door. Reddit has saved my ass a ton in the past, hoping I can find some answers here again! Thank you!!!
TLDR - I'm in NYC, working part time, with 4-5 years marketing experience, can't land a job, need some pointers. Thanks!

2024.05.15 22:39 DiligentAssignment89 Is Technical Writer I to Jr. Technical Writer a step down, or just a lateral move?

I am in a situation where I need to move to another city/state. My current title is Technical Writer I, which is the entry/junior level position at my current company. I'm closing in on an offer in the new city/state I need to move, but the new job uses the title Jr. Technical Writer. The duties actually appear more advanced than what my current job has me doing. It's a smaller team, so I'll have a larger role. And finally, it does pay a decent amount more than my current role ($12k more).
Are these basically the same thing? Will it look bad on resume to have left a job with the title Technical Writer I and move to a role called Jr. Technical Writer. To me, it's worth it on the money alone, but I do wonder how it will look on my resume when I'm ready for my next move (granted, I don't get promoted out of that title before I decide to leave).

2024.05.15 22:30 aznpersuazion Artificial Intelligence is NOT a Good Career

As with most things, the opinions expressed in this post are my own. Consider this as just one data point, and not as a guide to your career.
I've been working in the Data/AI space for 5 years now and I've seen hundreds of starry eyed people wanting to work in A.I. because they want to work with the latest and coolest cutting edge technology. But I want to share with you a few reasons why A.I. is not a good career choice.
  1. A.I. positions could end up like the "data scientist" position. Looking at the history of the data scientist position, in 2010-2020, the hype around data science made it so that millions of people flocked to that position. Companies eventually realized that most them actually didn't need data science, and the impact of the position didn't always help them profit. The demand of the job has plummeted in recent years, leaving millions of aspiring data scientists unemployed or needing to pursue a different career.
  2. A.I. positions will be less than .0001% of tech engineering jobs. In the next few decades, the demand for software and data engineering roles will be much more needed at most companies that A.I. roles. Only a small group companies will a be pursuing A.I. initiatives, while the majority of companies will still need software and data engineers. But because 90% of tech news is A.I. related, there will be a massive influx of people trying to enter the space.
  3. The barriers to entry are huge. To pursue a career in A.I. and machine learning. A person's understanding of statistics and software engineering need to be extremely high. To get to that level of knowledge requires much more dedication and studying than most people imagine. Becoming a decent software engineer or data professional is already difficult for the average person.
Before you decide to pursue this as a career, it's important to consider some of the cons listed below. Perhaps consider taking a smaller step first and trying to land a job as a software engineer or data analyst. If you're already in a technical field, consider not putting all your eggs into one basket, and making sure you know enough skills to stay gainfully employed in the job market.

2024.05.15 22:14 Due_Living4926 Advice for Breaking Into Industry or Academia?

Hello everyone,
I need advice for what to do in regards to starting a career in my industry which is international relations or getting into academia whether as a professor or into administration. For context, I am 27 and earned my Bachelor's degree in 2019 in the US then I decided to pursue my Master's degree in St Petersburg, Russia due to spending my sophomore year (2016-2017) studying abroad in Russia. I started my program in 2021 and then graduated last summer with my Master's being in Russian Regional Studies. I wanted to work with international companies who were possibly interested in expanding into the Russian market, but due to the current political situation that plan went out the window. During my time abroad I hosted and taught English at Conversational Language Clubs and later an English school. My Russian is also at a B1 level but I love the Russian language so I still practice it and desire to eventually reach fluency.
I've currently been back living with my parents since September 2023 and have tried looking for jobs to start my career. I'm interested in administrative work/teaching in academia. In terms of industry jobs, I'm interested in project management and regional development jobs and also considering the possibility of working in the energy sector as my master's thesis was about Russia's Energy Market and Trade Prospects in Asia. I would really however, love to live and work abroad if possible as well so locating internationally is something I have a strong desire for as well. My lack of a car is an issue as well so my focus has been on cities that have strong public transportation systems.
In terms of my resume, the only work experience I have is the English teaching and conversational club host experience I listed above. In terms of skills, my Russian is a B1 level, I have strong research and analysis skills, managing large groups of up to 20 people thanks to running a conversational English club, some lesson and topic planning experience and organizational skills in hosting and teaching whether that be creating a orderly structure for each meeting or ensuring everyone was engaged in the discussions.
I wouldn't trade the experiences I've had for anything because the friends I've made have been some of the most incredible people that I have ever met. At the same time, I know my lack of relevant work experience in industry is an issue. I have talked to my university and they helped me with my LinkedIn profile as well as my resume and have been using major sites like LinkedIn, Indeed and Handshake to look for job postings but so far no luck.
Do you have any advice for where I should look next? I feel lost and spend several hours a day looking for an entry level job that will get my foot in the door and jump start my career.

2024.05.15 22:08 abigail2319 Help Understanding Dexamethasone Suppression Test

Hi! I am a 29F, white, 5'6" being evaluated for hypercortisolism. My doctor is currently doing the workup for Cushing's. I am confused about the dexamethasone suppresion test and where I may be going from here. I do have a followup with my doctor, but that won't be for a few weeks. Is there a difference in what information the low and high dose tests provide?
As far as symptoms, with the earliest starting around 7 months ago, I have had hypertension, tachycardia (Both of these are new onset, and I never struggled with them before this), striae, headaches, recent weight gain, more round face, extreme fatigue, some muscle weakness, and blurry vision. I take atenolol every day now. I don't know if this is related, but I have not had my period since June 2023, no spotting or anything else since then either.
As far as tests, I have had late-night salivary cortisol tests, 24-hour UFC, low-dose dexamethasone test, and high-dose dexamethasone test. Results are
Thank you for any help understanding this!

2024.05.15 21:58 wJaxon Saw the other post about DOD and I am wondering, is it common to be given almost nothing to do?

I have been searching for a job for so long and feel almost envious of the other person's post about the DOD being boring. I do not want to invalidate how they feel as I also graduated and don't know what to expect when it comes to work as I haven't gotten a job at all yet, so I am sure once I have a job that is brain numbingly boring I will eventually feel the same way. But I have no experience, no internships, and can't find an entry-level job at all. I have heard its issues with my resume and lack of in-depth projects which I am trying to address but how are other people's experiences working at the DOD? I did not want even to bother applying for ethical reasons of working for a defense contractor but I might be able to sleep with a lighter conscious if I knew that I realistically would be doing anything, especially at entry-level lmao. I dont want these questions to come off as asking about how other people feel morally or anything, just what the content of your work actually is? Is it as boring as this post or is their post just representative of an entry-level grads experience or?

2024.05.15 21:53 Low-Entropy Yoko's Hardtrance and Rave Sleeper Hits

As a DJ with 25 years of ongoing passion for the craft and a special fondness for the 90s oldschool sounds, Yoko has collected lots of vinyl from the "good old days". Here, he shares 10 tracks from that era which he thinks often go unnoticed, especially when at retro events today the DJs mostly keep playing the well-known tunes from back then.
Since Yoko always wants to keep tracks like these from being forgotten, he regularly streams live mixes on his channels where he aims to repeat tracks as little as possible! Make sure to check out his "Oldschool Mixfest" series if you're into this style (and don't mind German chat & voiceovers).

1. Univers - Univers ["Dance Division Vol. 12" // Pink Records // Spain 1995] Relentlessly forward-pounding Hard-Trancer on one of Spain's best "not-so-Makina" labels, with an awesome melody and high energy vocal sample on top. And as with many of these tunes, works even better when pitched up a few percent!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C-4bNY7OgI
2. Elemental Space - Called You (Roughage Remix) ["Stronglimited" // Time Unlimited // Germany 1993] Similarly full of energy with both awesome arpeggio buildup and lead synth melody, plus typical early 90s "dark bass & drums" arrangement. Imagine a strobe-filled but otherwise dimly-lit dancefloor and you're off to rave heaven!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPOLyNNUPlk
3. Polyphonic - Mamy (Virus Mix) [Do It Yourself // Italy 1996]Italian Hard-Trance is usually more filled with angelic choir sample based melodies, but this track just goes full throttle with a nasty synth line and distorted Acid goodness on top – delicious.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZdQ2m9bJTU
4. M - Das Wunder (Club Mix) ["Running (The Future Is Now!) (Special Mix)" // Blow Up // Germany 1995]Hidden away on the B-side of an (also nice, but slower) Trope Remix of a Vocal Hard-Trance/Euro-Rave tune is this masterpiece of 170 BPM Hard-Trance. You don't expect it from the way the tune starts rather, let's say "level headed" with just some nice drum work and occasional synth stab, but when the main part comes in, you're guaranteed to start jumping!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lG_aDwVBAs
5. DJ Rope & DJ Marco Bailey - Be Free (Wavesong Mix) ["Spice" // Dance Opera // Belgium 1994]Another B-side surprise! This one comes as close to the perfect hypnotic rave melody as it gets, and even though it does work at its original speed, try cranking your turntable up to the max and you're gonna lose your shit to this banger.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqqyPcD2m5Y
6. Unknown Structure - Music For The Brain (Remix) [Frankfurt Beat Productions // Germany 1994] The perfect starter track for a set filled with 90s high-energy Hard-Trance & Rave! You get about a minute of preparation and moody intro vibes, until the main synth starts taking you on a journey you'll never forget. Another breather around 3:30 mins and then you're granted a second ride through this amazing buildup of sounds! "Sound of Frankfurt" at it's finest.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S14CjzUWEc
7. Mental Glue - Accuphase [OverOut // Germany 1995] Starts off already hard with great kickdrum & Acid combo which on it's own already get your heart pumping. But then the break introduces an amazing uplifting melody as counterpoint to the first part that works just perfect. This is the type of "hard-but-still-melodical" tune that could only be made in the 90s!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7asuM5hGjs
8. Secret Alloy - Mon-Ka ["Second Chapter EP" // Pedo Beat Records // Germany 1995] And yet another B-side sleeper hit. Good buildup, then everything gets stripped down and you wonder if this track goes anywhere – but you'll soon be rewarded for your patience! The melody is a perfect example of "simple makes it memorable", only 3 notes but used expertly, and with a nice piercing synth sound to drive it into your brain while raving.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvx2HcrVaCc
9. M-Modulator - Boff ["Sour Lips EP" // Ugly Frog Productions // Germany 1996] If you ever wanted to drift off into Acid-Hard-Trance hypnosis for almost 8 minutes, then this tune is for you. Just enough variation of the sounds, underpinned with a repetitive "flickering" sound loop to keep you in trance the whole time, almost invites you to just play this track on repeat in the background to keep you energized and hypnotized for as long as you need.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X89NrmIY9U
10. Fiocco - Sordo ["Afflitto" // Outline // Belgium 1997]This might be the most surprising B-side bomb of them all...! The main track on this release would later be made famous in cooperation with Kosmonova (renamed to "Celebrate"), and who would expect a fast Hard-Trance/Rave tune on such a slower "clubsound of the late 90s" release? There's also only one pressing where this particular track even exists, but taking this stark contrast of styles into account it's not that surprising. Just take my word for it, and check this 175 BPM banger out. But don't complain if your legs hurt after bouncing to this!

2024.05.15 21:26 flying_cactus To the public accounting managers out there, why are you desperately trying to get senior accountant industry jobs?

Sometimes I look at your resumes and it’s way too strong for the Senior roles I’m looking for, but because your resume and experience is so strong, I owe you the benefit of at least interviewing you.
You guys do understand that when you come into this Senior role in the private sector, you are going to be grinding. You will be on the floor gathering data, doing reconciliations, booking hundreds of journal entries, without staff or interns. You realize my expectations are that you will be happy doing this at a senior level for at least 3 years before I even entertain the thought of promoting you. You realize that no matter what, we will always need seniors to do the grunt work, and that is what you are applying for.
So let me ask you, why are you guys motivated and desperately trying to get these jobs? Cant you do much better? I hate going into these interviews feeling skeptical and feeling like there’s some ulterior motive. Because I know for sure, when I was a Manager in Audit, trying to be an industry senior accountant was probably the last thing I wanted to do after getting burned out by audit.

It's only fair.
Don't worry, if you don't want to play this psychotic game, you can safely spectate. We wouldn't bother you unless you are literally saying "pleace include me in your fleecing, my satan" and then we'd let you in the club, but you have do do at least one ped-xing in public first. In July, personal stories that are stupid or funny or embarrassing are permitted as long as they specifically take place on the anniversary of the day you publish the story. There are no quality removals for these kinds of stories.
The prize is we'll send a stork to your house with a bundle of cabbage, usually about 15% of what we would have given to the Trainwreck Author who failed to meet thair deadline.
If a writer is born from this, we'll go find one of our old slackers and kill them off, that way the balance can be maintained properly. Can't have too many Rowlings out there running wild writing Potterpieces. That would fvck the fictions.
Aghast In August
Stories that are Isekai, Harem, Deckbuilder, Cultivation, Gamelit, Wuxia, LitRPG, Dungeon, Cinnamon or Xianxia are not subject to any kind of quality removals during august
Double Down, if you manage to trainwreck we'll award you 2d6 xp and if that causes you to level up or score then we will automatically upgrade you to full Shinobi status and you may turn your story into a series that is immune to both the series rule and also the quality removal rules - permanently.
Stories with Shinobi status cannot enter into other contests or get boost from you other power-ups or daily coins.
Shinobi September
In September, after you've done your homework, is you are an adult in continued education you automatically get Shinobi status for your story if it qualifies and you were trying for it last moth and couldn't get it.
Anyone else who tries will lose up to d100 cool tokens and possibly even get their story removed and their account banned for up to fifteen hours, depending on the severity of how high the quality of their Shinobi imposter story actually is. Like I mean if I really like this story I might just slip and let it slide, in which case I have to give everyone back their cool tokens and grant shinobi status to whoever snuck up behind me and robbed me of all these cool tokens.
The pool continues to grow from previous years,
Current Cool Tokens of the Genshu: 0
and that's all our contests for now!

2024.05.15 20:35 eli_ashe The 451 Percenters, Puritanism At The CDC And Other Fascistic Fallacies

Bit of a longer post, sorry bout that, but I felt it was time, perhaps once again, to point out the flaws and limitations in the CDC’s stats on sexual violence, specifically as they relate to the National Intimate Partner Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), which is the source of all the fun stats on sexual violence that get thrown around by the 451 percenters. Who are the 451 percenters? Those the folks who believe and spread the lies bout sexual violence being endemic to society. Everyone’s a sexual predator! All 451 percent of women are violated, and all 451 percent of men are violators.
TL;DR: An analysis and rebuttal to the CDC and NISVS’s statistics on sexual violence. The CDC uses NISVS to generate the stats on punny sexual violence that make wild claims, like one third of all women, etc… the 451 percenters’ claims bout punny sexual violence. They use a ‘yes means yes’ method of determining what counts as punny sexual violence, which is aesthetics based. Elevating aesthetical concerns to ethically obligatory concerns is fascistic, and a grave moral fallacy. ‘Yes means yes’ is also puritanical, meaning it overly moralizes sexuality. Putting puritanical fascists in charge of determining how many punny sexual offenses are happening is like putting the KKK in charge of determining how many jews are sexual predators. “All 451 percent of them, obviously!”
Body Of The Post
‘Yes means yes’ is an aesthetical ethical concern, ‘Do I want it or not’. This is what the National Intimate Partner Violence Survey (NISVS) and the CDC use and reflect in their stats on sexual violence. Vibes. They are the ‘emmitt till got what he deserved’ crowd. Whistling at a lady is a criminalizable offense to these folks, a ‘punny sexual violence’.
‘No means no’ is an ethically obligatory concern, ‘Did I refuse it or not’. This is what the criminal stats on sexual violence use and reflect in their stats on sexual violence. Hard data. They are the ‘emmit till did nothing wrong’ crowd. Whistling at a lady is at most tasteless, emmitt till could do far better.
‘Wanting’ or ‘Not Wanting’ something does not consent make. I can want to fuck someone, but not consent to do so. I could not want to fuck someone, but nonetheless consent to do so. The former perhaps because I think it is a bad idea to fuck ‘em even tho I want to. The latter, perhaps because I think it is a good idea to fuck ‘em even tho I don’t want to.
The ‘yes means yes’ folks, the CDC & NISVS stats on sexual violence all mistake ‘wanting’ and ‘not wanting’ for ‘consenting’ and ‘not consenting’; these are not the same things. This is deliberate on their part too. They believe that ‘yes means yes’ is what ought to constitute a determination of sexual violence. Regardless of how y’all view that, it is a deeply controversial notion, and not necessarily reflective of what most people think of when they think of sexual violence.
‘Unwanted’ essentially means ‘I don’t like it’. It is a complaint bout the aesthetical qualities of the sexual encounter, not its consensualism. If this is at all unclear, the simplest method to understand why this is so is to note two unrelated aspects.
One is racism. People regularly ‘feel fearful’ of men for no reason at all, but they also feel fearful of men because of racism all the time. That fear factor ™ is what makes the encounter ‘coercion’ or ‘unwanted’. The person literally does nothing wrong, *just exists* and the other person freaks out.
Note in the quoted sections at the end of this post how much of the stats rely on fear and feelings to generate their numbers.
Two is the person came on too strong or in an undesirable way. The person flirts in a normal and perfectly fine way, but the other person freaks out. Think bout it people, for the love of god think bout it. ‘Coming on too strong’ and ‘an undesirable flirtation’ are being counted as ‘punny sexual violence’ in these stats.
It’s entirely puritanical, and entirely a concern bout aesthetics.
There are other sorts of coercive methods, but the point here is that the terms ‘unwanted’ and ‘coercion’ only really cash out as ‘I don’t like it for some reason or another’ in the CDC’s and NISVS’s stats.
When you see that lady spouting off bout her fears of mexican rapists, she’s reflected in these stats folks. They’re just surveys. People who lock their car doors in ‘bad neighborhoods’ are reflected in those stats.
These all translate to ‘I felt threatened’ (big black boy vibes) or ‘felt pressured’ (scary white guy vibes), or ‘felt in danger’ (native american coming to get you vibes), or ‘felt uncertain if you wanted it’ (arab terrorist vibes) or 'felt like I was being manipulated' (angry asian martial artists vibes) . Doesn’t have to be racism at play here either, women can be irrationally fearful of any man. Vibes.
The actions themselves are not criminalizable.
Non p-hacked stats try to avoid these kinds of obvious ambiguities in the language used to generate the 451 percenters’ stats. These folks however lean into the lies and deceptions, and deliberately use language designed to deceive people reading the stats into thinking that people have been harmed. They take language that means literally ‘I like or don’t like it’ and translate that to mean ‘I was sexually harassed, sexually assaulted, or even raped’.
This is how they inflate the numbers, so we get to the 451 percenters’ wacky ass beliefs; ‘451 percent of women will suffer egregious sexual violence to them at least fifty times in their lives’. All this means is vibes. 451 percent of women get some bad vibes bout some dudes.
You can hear it echoed in the bear or man discourse. Why do women choose the bear? Vibes and irrational fears. ‘We choose the bear because we don’t feel safe!’ translates directly to ‘Emmitt till whistled at me, and he’s a big black boy, that’s scary’ and ‘the mexican rapists are swarming over the border to get me’.
These are the stats that people point to when they try to justify their misandristic hot ass takes. They are self-referential to that same fear based aesthetic the stats are. The stats are reflective of peoples’ irrational fears, and people use those stats to justify their irrational fears, and people spread those fear based stats thereby spreading their unjustified fears. It’s a circle rub.
To criminalize these kinds of things is to be fascistic (treating aesthetics as if they were of obligatory concern), to believe that they are morally reprehensible is to be a puritan (overly moralizing sexuality).
The folks deriving these stats translate ‘unwanted’ (aesthetical ethics) to ‘sexual assault’, ‘sexual harassment’, or ‘rape’ (obligatory ethics), then lump everything together as ‘punny sexual violence’ to get the big numbers used to scare people and terrorize men. That’s called fascism.
“[T]here remains a likelihood of underreporting due to the sensitive nature of SV”.
This justification means that they do not trust people to report SV, ‘don’t believe women when they say they haven’t suffered any SV, manipulate the questions so they say yes to something they don’t think is SV, or which simply isn’t SV, and we’ll just call it SV of this or that sort. Later we’ll propagandize people so they too come to believe our puritanical misandristic hot ass takes.’
There is no lie nor hyperbole in what I am saying here. That is the rationale and the method. If you bone up on your academic lit in the topic, this is, well not verbatim what they say, I am lambasting them here, but this is the crux of what their argument and justifications are, and they explicitly hold that they ought be propagandizing people to their puritanical beliefs.
They push the fascistic (aesthetical ethical) and puritanical (overly moralized sexual ethics) discourse into the public by presenting stats that merely reflect fears and pretend that they are reflective of sexual violence. People then come to believe that those kinds of fear based concerns are actually sexual violence. An ‘unwanted flirtation’ becomes in their minds and only in their minds a sexual violence.
Emmitt till got lynched for whistling at a lady. They only disagree bout the racism, but he definitely deserved to be punished in some way like all men do for whistling at someone they think is hot af. Puritanism.
All just vibes, all but aesthetics, and all fascistically raised to a level of ethically obligatory concern.
“Just as SV is not limited to physically forced penetration, its perpetrators are not limited to strangers. Indeed, perpetrators of SV are more likely to be someone known to the victim. Sexual violence is a problem embedded in our society and includes unwanted acts perpetrated by persons very well known (e.g., family members, intimate partners, and friends), generally known (e.g., acquaintances), not known well or just known by sight (e.g., someone in your neighborhood, person just met) and unknown to the victim (e.g., strangers). “
Be afraid of everyone, any man out there could be your next rapist! That’s right ladies and gents, you’ve been raped several times already, you just didn’t know it. But don’t worry, the statisticians know better. They asked you an unrelated question you said yes to since you were too dumb to know that you were raped, and counted it as rape. Then they informed you that you ought be afraid of everyone in your community, lest they also rape you, unbeknownst to you of course. But again, don’t worry, the statistician will count those too.
As a measure of fear the 451 percenters capture, well or worse who knows, all the racism, sexism, bigotry, and various phobias in the society, and how those fears are transferred onto masculine bodies as imaginary perpetrators of punny sexual offenses. None of it is real, there are not 451 percent of sexual violences happening, 451 percent of men are not sexual predators, and 451 percent of women are not victims of sexual violence.
‘Safety culture’ mostly reflects irrational fears.
Ask the kkk how many black people are rapists, you’re gonna get a high number. Ask puritans how many people are punny sexual offenders, you’re going to get a very high number. Such is the most tame interpretation of what is going on. The 451 percenters are puritans, they’ve overly moralized sexuality, counting offenses to their sensibility rather than criminal actions.
Puritans informing you how ‘vile and wicked’ your sexual ways are; advocating to make their puritanical beliefs bout punny sexual offenses into legally enforceable laws. These are the same kinds of concerns bout a someone dressing too provocatively, such is a ‘punny sexual violation’ to the sensibilities of others.
The less tame version of this is that it is exactly what fascists do. Lie to people especially bout punny sexual offenses in order to ratchet up the fear levels in the population, so they run to them to solve the ‘problem’.
Could be both tho.
Either way, their misandry murders little boys. They celebrate terrorizing men, and rejoice in lynching folks. They’re despicable people.
Solutions?
Ruthlessly love them. Write them love poems, show them kindness and generosity of spirit, but give them not a dime in money, nor ever relent to their irrational fears. Extol their beauty and virtues, make love with them, utterly ruthlessly. Be overtly sexual bout it, in this give them no quarter, bring to an end their puritanism by giving them no plausible cause to be thus. No one under the duress of loves’ enticements and sexual pleasures be puritans. Be relentless, show them masculine sexuality; give them nothing to complain bout, but give them masculine sexuality. Don’t fall for their puritanism, be the boys of summer.
Respect a ‘no means no’ ethic as a code of obligatory actions. Use aesthetical ethics towards good sex with mutual respect given; don’t ever take that as a one way thing. Do not conflate the aesthetics of good sex, 'enthusiastic yeses’ with those of the ethics of obligation ‘no means no’. Don’t be puritans, don’t be fascists, be sex positivists.
Call out the stats when folks bring them up, refer people to these points, feel free to refer people to this post and/or the attached video. ‘But the CDC said’ is not a valid argument; they have put puritans in charge of determining punny sexual offenses. They find punny sexual offenses everywhere they look.
If you’re super coolio, start advocating against the CDC’s use of NISVS to determine what constitutes sexual violence. It doesn’t match with criminal data’s methods, it doesn’t utilize the metrics of ‘no means no’ which are the proper metrics to use, instead it utilizes what amounts to peculiar beliefs bout the aesthetics of sex as a means of measure for punny sexual offenses.
They are spreading a puritanical belief system bout punny sexual offenses, nothing more, and they are causing public health problems by spreading their lies. They are not counting sexual offenses, they are not a criminal justice system, they aren’t technically even in the business of understanding sexual violence. They are the Center For Disease Control, not the ‘center for social engineering sexual practices control’.
Original video on the topic, with some additional resources for understanding these issues in the description.
The Rest Of This Post Is References To The CDC, NISVS, And Crime Data Reports, Along With Some Quotes Thereof With Short Specific Retorts Highlighting The Relevant Info In The Quotes As It Pertains To The Post. This Is But A Small Sample Of How They Use Language Of Aesthetics To Make Their Ethical Claims, And How Their Language Is Misandristic.

Some key quotes from this, Bolded text hereafter are coded for ‘yes means yes’ methods of understanding sexual violence, and sometimes misandristic language. Italicized text are quotes from the sources:
“Rape is defined as any completed or attempted unwanted [unwanted is an aesthetic criteria, not a consent criteria which is ‘a no was stated’ attempted while a real thing allows for further insertion of scary vibes to pad the stats, e.g. the blackness of the lover] ...includes times when the victim was drunk, high*, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent.* [puritanical belief bout drinking and drugs, e.g. one cannot consent if drunk or high. Note that it is separate from being drugged or passed out and unable to consent, and that criminally speaking being drunk or high is not indicative of a lack of capacity to consent, also note this is de facto applied to women only].
“Sexual coercion is defined as unwanted sexual penetration that occurs after a person is pressured in a nonphysical way. In NISVS, sexual coercion refers to unwanted vaginal, oral, or anal sex after being pressured in ways that include being worn down by someone who repeatedly asked for sex or showed they were unhappy; feeling pressured by being lied to, being told promises that were untrue, having someone threaten to end a relationship or spread rumors; and sexual pressure due to someone using their influence or authority.”
Unwanted is an aesthetic category, not a consent category. ‘Sexual coercion’ is not a criminal offense either. It is a puritanical belief bout sexuality that is based on a sex negative view, e.g. that sex is a bad unless and until magical words are said to make it into a good. Calling it ‘sexual violence’ is just lying. Coercion is defined misandristically to only be bout penetration, which precludes all the ways that women use sex and sexuality to manipulate, use, abuse, and harm people; note that there are essentially zero surveys done that include some ‘feminine coded coercive behavior’ into these stats. That is by design. Including not incidentally the way that women have historically and currently used irrational fears over their sexuality to terrorize men and get people murdered.
“Unwanted sexual contact is defined as unwanted sexual experiences involving touch but not sexual penetration, such as being kissed in a sexual way, or having sexual body parts fondled, groped, or grabbed.”
Unwanted is aesthetics, not consent. Also this literally describes flirting. I know they want to try and capture some other sort of notion, grossy mcgrosser pinning someone down and groping them, but all this describes here, and all the stats can possibly reflect, is flirting.
“Non-contact unwanted sexual experiences is defined as those unwanted experiences that do not involve any touching or penetration, including someone exposing their sexual body parts, flashing, or masturbating in front of the victim, someone making a victim show his or her body parts, someone making a victim look at or participate in sexual photos or movies*, or* someone harassing the victim in a public place in a way that made the victim feel unsafe.”
This category is quite broad and puritanical in its disposition, as it assumes there is something wrong with seeing naked images unless and until expressed verbal consent is given, and undoubtedly ignores the en masse flood of naked images of women online to which basically every guy is exposed to. Compare again to people who claim that women ought not be allowed to show their ankles as it causes a ‘harm’ to those who are ‘forced’ to see it. Exact same shite. Aesthetical concerns of wanted or unwantedness, and also notice the expressly stated vibes check ‘victim feel unsafe’. Look out for the black boys, they make them feel unsafe!
Crime/Law Enforcement Stats (UCR Program) — FBI
Quick Facts on Sexual Abuse Offenses (ussc.gov)
It’s worth mentioning that statistically speaking, if one uses the stats derived from crime data as opposed to statisticians making numbers up, the percentages of men who do sexual violence, depending a bit on how you count it, are: 0.0516% or .478% or .0957%. Although the video goes over this all in pretty good depth, just do a little sniff test here; are .478% of the male population sexually violating a third of all women, 55.5 million women?

2024.05.15 20:32 Dnorberg Ski Patrol to the Professional World

I have worked ski patrol and guided fly fishing for the past three years. I studied for the GRE two summers ago. I am getting tired of the seasonal work and want more consistency with a full-time job. I studied economics and business at a liberal arts school. As of now, I have experience running small business marketing campaigns. Marketing was my favorite course in college, however, I received good grades in just about all of my accounting and financial courses. I am open to other business-oriented jobs besides marketing. I am too far removed from school to get accepted for an internship position. Does anyone have recommendations for making ski patrol sound professional on my resume to get accepted into entry-level jobs? My end goal is to get full-time professional work experience so I can eventually apply to a masters program.

A prototype about a dwarf sentenced to the depths, mining to earn their freedom, with monsters, beasts and a touch of magic.
https://preview.redd.it/b3adl5y0pm0d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a210aa3f9d3c712c585c30d4b334a766b6ef9dfb
Good day everyone!
Solo dev here, primarily looking for feedback about this work-in-progress prototype as my influence has no reach and there isn’t a community around this game as you’d expect. And as such, getting feedback, any form of it, even without playing the game and watching footage only, is literally impossible. Been doing this game dev thing for years (long story riddled with hardships) without any form of breakthrough, for one reason or another (some were on my part, but mostly concerned with the lack of resources), which is why I’m posting this prototype here, in hopes of getting somewhere. No idea where, but somewhere else for certain; most of my past projects were pulled from Itch, but remain in a blog, and video form as an archive - more can be found on my website if interested).
As the aesthetics are very rough (have no proper tools so it’ll stay that unfortunately), and all is still heavily work-in-progress, my questions will mostly focus on the viability of the concept:
  • Do you think it’s fun to play or has the potential to be one? (playing or just by watching the video) If not or misses any/a lot of things, please list them if you’ve the time.
  • Do you think it has potential to be turned into a full-fledged game? (with more polish in mind of course)
  • Does the random aspect of “each play is different” appeal to you? (some vague roguelike bits here)
  • Do you think that another game about mining, especially in third person has the right to exists? Knowing that the focus is more on the experience, rather than needing to mine (explained later).
Probably there’s a lot more to ask/say about this, so feel free to chime in if you’ve anything interesting to add, or just voice your first impressions, or whatever else you’ve on mind. Appreciate it all! Now to the interesting bits below.
Main genres: Action, adventure, RPG
Platform: PC (Windows)
Engine: Unreal Engine 4
Specs: Bare minimum, it’s being developed on a ~10-15y old computer (still rocking Win7), so probably it’s going to run on most modern PCs, as it has the bare minimum for graphics as you can see.
No installation is required, just unpacking the file. Although might pop-up a warning from Windows (the game launcher is not certified). Bugs may apply, as I’m the sole developer and tester.
Premise:
A dwarf was sentenced into the depths, to mine until they earned their freedom back. A cold, dark and dangerous place it is, riddled with monsters, beasts and a touch of magic.
About:
Falterstone is a work-in-progress prototype where you control a dwarf in third person and is tasked to mine resources to earn their freedom back; whilst battling the many dangers that lie ahead. While the core loop is kept simple (mining for resources, carrying those back to the base and earning coins), the idea behind the project is to make sure you are engaged with this monotonic experience in a more sensational way, as piling up money isn’t the “true” point of this all: staying in the mine and “surviving” it all is, as you can’t escape.
The design stems from both the influence of the late 90s/early 2000s, when painted models were all the rage (low poly with textures, although if it were to be made proper, would probably looked more like modern hand painted assets, stuff from WOW, or Dota2), and the need to iterate at a blistering speed as a solo developer (arriving to the current version took around a month; everything you see here was made by hand, from scratch; most of the design work is also documented under the community tab and in release videos on Youtube - playlist). Proper art was not just obviously scrapped in favor of speed but the lack of tools as mentioned above (the production is literally running on thin air).
Fueled by a bit of nostalgia, the design, however unpleasant it may feel (both the execution and the forms), stems from old illustrations of fantasy roleplaying books on one hand, where one could find these hideous monsters and beasts, and perhaps a whole lot due to the underlying circumstances. Also, it gives the perfect opportunity to focus more on the gameplay, and not get bogged down on aesthetics that much (proper asset creation usually takes weeks/months in a general studio setting, more so if done solo, because you’ve to do everything yourself, not just have the right technical or artisan skills).
That being said, even though this is technically just a prototype (usually not meant for the public), some greater effort was still put in (especially fairly recently, for the latest update) to make sure the game is a bit more palatable for non-devs and alike.
Currently the focus is on mechanics and making the game more fun and engaging, rather than filling it up with content that would contribute little to the core loop, and would only act as supplement (e.g. more items, weapons, crafting, building): At this stage feel is more important than abundance and updates happen on a case by case (the “what would make the game better” scenario); hoping that this makes sense.
Here you can find a little over 5 minutes of assorted gameplay of the latest version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ec2c7vGzVY
The landing page of the game is at https://theaaronstory.itch.io/falterstone where you can download by clicking the “Download” button and the end of the page description (the only other way to post a direct link is to share keys, if so let me know, and will generate one general key). No fees apply, the prototype is completely free.
What's there to see?
  • walk, run, mine and fight
  • build supports to prevent cave-ins
  • mine stonewood, coal, tin, lead, silver and iron
  • earn coins by throwing items at the cart
  • avoid dangers: cave-ins, drowning and monsters
  • inspect items and enemies
  • enemies with 4 difficulty levels (normal, footman, captain and knight)
  • enemy types: gnomes (melee), pixie (ranged)
  • mobs can have buffs (if they're lower level)
  • drink potions to regain some health (orb, potion lvl1-3)
  • use runes to drain water
  • use a map to know where you've been

Would be interested to find out what others think about the concept, as it emerged alongside a major project that unfortunately went nowhere, thus focus shifted on this one instead.
Thank you for reading and have a nice day!

2024.05.15 20:08 flyinggarbanzobean At what point should you drop College details from Resume?

I graduated in 2022, and I don't love my current job (understatement). I work in tech, as a software engineer.
I'm currently working on fixing up my resume to start applying for other jobs, and I'm thinking that perhaps some of these details don't need to be on my resume anymore. I imagine that I should still include what university I went to and the degree I got.
But what about things like an industry-related club I was president of? Internships I had before my final year? Definitely important things to include for applying for entry level jobs right out of school, but now? Seems maybe
I have some other things I could include to fill up the space, like side projects I've been working on the past two years.
What are your thoughts about what to take off your resume post-grad?

2024.05.15 19:45 beauthentic11 Need Help Deciding On College Path

I'm a 38-year-old woman without a degree who's been navigating through decent-paying jobs, but I'm encountering hurdles in achieving stability and advancing beyond entry-level management roles. After some contemplation, I'm considering pursuing further education to broaden my career horizons.
My strengths lie in social media, branding, and leadership positions. I excel in visual communication, have really strong interpersonal skills, and thrive in collaborative environments. However, I struggle with analytics and numbers, preferring roles that involve connecting with people and design-oriented tasks. I envision myself thriving in PR, social media marketing, branding, and working with influencers potentially.
Living in Massachusetts, I recently discovered a program offering free Community College tuition for residents, which seems like a promising opportunity, especially after losing my job last week. Despite feeling somewhat defeated, I'm trying to stay positive and do something different Admittedly, high school was a challenge for me due to ADD that was disagnosed years later, and while I hate to make excuses, it's a part of my reality that I must admit to. The fear of failure is present as I consider returning to education because I really struggled in school and it wasn't because I wasn't smart.
After years of attempting to climb the career ladder without a degree, I sense that get one might be what I need for my progression but I'm unsure about the best path forward. What major would be versatile across various industries with the interests and skillsets I mentioned above? I'm open to suggestions and advice on how to navigate this transition effectively. Valve Steam Deck vs. ROG Ally vs. Lenovo Legion Go: Handheld Gaming Showdown
Hey fellow gamers,
I've been diving deep into the world of handheld gaming PCs, and here I am making a comparison of three major players: the Valve Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go. These devices are the front runners in the current market, each offering a unique take on portable gaming. However, it's worth noting that there are other notable mentions in this space, such as the MSI Claw, the AYANEO Next 2, and the AOKZOE A1, which also provide impressive specs and features.
So, let's break down the specs, performance, design, operating systems, and overall value of the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go to help you decide which one might be right for you.

1. Valve Steam Deck

Specs:
  • Processor: Custom AMD APU (Zen 2 + RDNA 2)
  • Display: 7.4-inch, 1280x800, 90Hz OLED (7-inch 60Hz for LCD)
  • RAM: 16GB LPDDR5
  • Storage: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB NVMe (expandable via microSD)
  • Operative System: Steam OS
  • Battery Life: 2-8 hours (varies by game)
Performance: The Steam Deck delivers solid performance for most of your Steam library. Its custom APU from AMD balances power and efficiency, allowing for decent gameplay at medium settings for modern titles. Older and less demanding games run smoothly, making it a versatile option for varied gaming preferences. While this is the less powerfull of the devices it is also very well optimized by Valve and game developers.
Design: The Steam Deck boasts a comfortable design with well-placed controls and a new 7.4-inch OLED touchscreen. The OLED display offers vibrant colors and deeper blacks, enhancing the visual experience. The device construction feels robust. The SteamOS interface is user-friendly, especially if you’re already embedded in the Steam ecosystem.
Value: The Steam Deck offers great value, especially considering its ability to run a wide array of PC games on the go. The higher storage models are pricier but worth it if you plan to install many AAA titles. For budget-conscious gamers, the LCD version of the Steam Deck is an excellent choice, providing the same robust gaming experience at a lower cost.

2. ASUS ROG Ally

Specs:
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme
  • Display: 7-inch, 1920x1080, 120Hz IPS
  • RAM: 16GB LPDDR5
  • Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD (expandable via microSD)
  • Operative System: Windows 11
  • Battery Life: 2-6 hours
Performance: The ROG Ally packs a punch with its Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, significantly outperforming the Steam Deck's custom AMD APU (Zen 2 + RDNA 2). The Z1 Extreme offers higher clock speeds and more advanced architecture, enabling it to handle demanding games at higher settings with better frame rates. The 120Hz display also provides a smoother experience, particularly noticeable in fast-paced games, making the Ally an excellent choice for gamers who demand high performance.
Design: The Ally features a sleek, modern design that’s slightly more portable than the Steam Deck. The 1080p display is a significant upgrade, delivering vibrant visuals. ASUS has implemented excellent cooling solutions, ensuring the device remains comfortable during extended play sessions.
Value: The ROG Ally justifies its cost with superior performance and a higher quality display. It’s a solid choice for gamers looking for a more premium handheld experience.

3. Lenovo Legion Go

Specs:
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme
  • Display: 8.8-inch, 2560x1600, 144Hz LCD
  • RAM: 16GB LPDDR5X
  • Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD (expandable via microSD)
  • Operative System: Windows 11
  • Battery Life: 3-7 hours
Performance: The Legion Go is a beast with its Ryzen Z1 Extreme (the same powerful processor found in the ROG Ally). This processor handles even the most demanding titles with ease, providing higher clock speeds and advanced architecture compared to the Steam Deck's Zen 2 APU. The 144Hz display provides an incredibly smooth gaming experience, making it ideal for competitive gamers who demand high frame rates.
Design: Lenovo has opted for a larger 8.8-inch display, which is great for immersion but does make the device slightly less portable, it is as wide as the Steam Deck but slightly taller. The build quality is top-notch, and the controls are responsive. The Legion Go also comes with detachable controllers, similar to the Nintendo Switch and a quite innovative FPS system that allows one of the controllers to dub as mouse.
Value: The Legion Go offers the most advanced specs and features, making it a worthwhile investment for serious gamers who want the best handheld performance and versatility.

A word on Operating Systems

SteamOS. The Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system optimized for gaming and maintained by Valve itself. SteamOS provides seamless integration with the Steam library and features a console-like interface, making it easy to navigate and use. For those who prefer Windows, it is possible to install it on the Steam Deck, allowing for broader compatibility with non-Steam games and applications. Furthermore, SteamOS can also be installed on other devices using open-source projects like Bazzite, ChimeraOS, and HoloISO, giving users flexibility in their operating system choice. This being Linux, it means that not all games are actually supported. For a comprehensive list visit protondb.com .
Windows 11. The ROG Ally and the Legion Go both come with Windows 11. Windows provides full compatibility with a wide range of PC games and software. It offers a familiar environment for PC users, with features such as DirectStorage and Auto HDR that enhance the gaming experience. Windows OS also supports productivity tasks, making it a versatile operating system for gaming and work. The small screen of these devices make the use for gaming cumbersome, and both the ROG Ally and the Legion Go have developed a game luncher to mitigate that, however they pale in comparison with the Steam interface. Additionally, it's worth noting that Windows OS is sometimes the only way to play certain games that have anti-cheat systems, such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Destiny 2, due to their reliance on specific Windows components for anti-cheat functionality.

For those who are budget-conscious, the LCD version provides the same powerful gaming capabilities at a lower cost, making it an excellent entry point into handheld gaming.

The Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor and higher refresh rate displays provide a smooth and responsive gaming experience, particularly for fast-paced and demanding titles. 2024.05.15 19:04 Fuck__Off__ TA or FA

TA or FA
I have taught myself to trade with strictly Technical analysis. I know nothing of macroeconomics nor do I see a need to learn. My strategy isn't complicated. I locate levels/zones that I believe price will turn around and I enter at them. I don't wait for confirmations, check news or anything like that. I just enter with a sl usually about 10-15 pips and let it go. Patience allows me to hold until TPs are hit or sl is hit which I trail behind structures. The A/U trade for example from this morning was a buy limit with a 10 pip sl that filled while I was sleeping. My U/J long hit my sl for a gain of 420 pips and then I found a short entry on a M15 bounce from structure. Anyway if you have questions feel free to ask.
