China complicit against capitalism

2024.05.14 21:28 Witext China complicit against capitalism

I’m kinda disappointed with China’s foreign strategy
They’re the biggest stronghold of socialism in the world but they seem to have no interest in ridding the world of capitalism & are okay with the exploitation of workers in other countries.
I know it’s not their job to radicalise the people of America or any other nation, but not even trying or even trying not to spread socialism just seems completely against the core ideals of socialism.
For example, one of Chinas earliest & most famous luxury car brands, Hongqi, has become quite popular abroad. Being the brand that the CCP uses for their parades, & their name translating to “red flag” I was hopeful & looked at their website but even on their page about their history, not once do they mention socialism or the meaning of their name.
To me, that seems like they’d rather not promote socialism in hope more people will buy their cars instead of promoting socialism.
I’m not saying every Chinese brand should promote socialism, but they’re not even trying, going out of their way to not mention socialism & happily exploiting capitalism in other nations.
It’s like they don’t care about the socialist movement at all

HEADLINES: COLOURS BLESSED IN THE VATICAN

ST.PETER'S BASILICA, VATICAN CITY - After much teasing and anticipation, the Colours of the UNKNOWN Trading Company had finally been blessed in St.Peter's Basilica, officially making the flag sacred. Irishkaiser specifically chose the 6th of May as it is the annual date the Swiss Guards swear in new members and in remembrance of the 468 Swiss Guardsmen who bitterly resisted to the death, in spite of insurmountable odds. The same mentality and unbreakable morale that is prevalent in his regiment.
Irishkaiser had to remain pure at this time and just before the blessing, confessed his sins to the priest who absolved him of his sins. He then got it blessed by the same priest at around 17:35-17:37, Central European Time.
The Colours had passed through four European capitals and was supposed to be presented in the Tomb of Napoleon, before deciding that the vainglorious Napoleon would be inappropriate, considering the more important of 'Purity of Arms' - where a warrior and his equipment shall be used honorably and never for evil or selfish purposes.
No European general or statesmen could fulfill the standards of martial excellence and purity of character - except perhaps General Alexander Suvorov - who is buried in Annunciation Church in St.Petersburg.
The sanctity of the flag blessed in one of the holiest sites of Christendom, renders it an extension of Christian morality. Whenever the flag is presented, all members are to ensure that in that moment, the Christian perspective on 'sin' should be considered an affront to the flag.
The same will be true for all flags blessed by holy men of different religious perspectives.
No war crimes, boys. Sorry.

HEADLINES: IRISHKAISER INTERVIEWS THE MAGIC JEW - EXCLUSIVE INFO!

MILAN, ITALY - Irishkaiser had met up and interviewed legendary Majicou asking him questions and secrets about MineZ and its history - bringing new light and perspective on things never before realized! Irishkaiser had learned a lot and was even surprised at who was responsible for what.
I also learned that Majicou is actually a cat guy... Huh... Europeans, am I right..?
As I am editing this, I would like to give a forewarn that European food fattened me up in a short amount of time. Everyone keeps recommending me as the 'cultural' ideal of what makes an 'X' meal of a Milanese, a Madrileno, a Parisian... A Roman... Holy shit, it's just meat and fucking carbs. Majicou told me Ossobucco with Safron Risotto was the most Milanese thing to eat... So I ate it. What is a Carbonara? What is a Beef Bourgingnon? What is a Conchinillo? Even the Madrid Stew. Goddamn and Switzerland. Don't get me started about Swiss Germans... AND HOLY SHIT GREECE. The only thing that had enough vegetables in it was the Asparagus because it was fucking Spargel season. Motherfucker. I literally have a wider hitbox now. Fucking hell, no wonder the TIF girls are vegetarians or vegetable heavy. I AM DYING OF MEAT IN THAT CONTINENT.
Yes, I am trying to cope with the fact that I look fat on camera. Don't judge me. That's bodyshaming.
Tune in to see when Irishkaiser is done splicing the interview and... Holy fuck, I really hope I don't suffer in putting in subtitles.
___
EDITORIAL - Our War, Everyone's War.
Irishkaiser - While in a cat cafe in Milan, I had a rather intense conversation with Majicou regarding the states of our worlds. It was like a scene from the turbulent times in Europe such as the Enlightenment, the Revolution, the Spring of Nations... Learned and concerned men discussing the times. Except we were surrounded by cats... And the gayoids...
Majicou had insisted that nobody there understands English, so we continued on with our heavy conversation, invoking the name of great powers, great orders and great ideas.
I had noticed that the chatter behind us died down and I was sure people were listening to what we were saying... But he STILL INSISTED NOBODY UNDERSTOOD ENGLISH.
I had policed my words because I was in TIF territory... I was sure they were gonna jump me... Especially this one fucking cat that gave me the stink-eye...
We had discussed about the state of our nations and the character of people today. The general consensus of course was that we are unworthy of our ancestors, and that our futures look rather grim.
I had adopted the more callous outlook and stated that it is better to grit our teeth and go through with the suffering in order to secure the better future.
Majicou stated that some people cannot take that suffering anymore and it is wrong and somewhat too much to keep asking people to suffer more when they have been betrayed by their governments and promises time and time again.
He had a point. When will the demands stop?
But the greater threat of a totalitarian socialist power was ever looming. We cannot even afford a stalemate with them. Because even if a conflict with RedChina is inconclusive, I fear we will begin to adopt their methods and lose our way of life to compete with them. I have no doubt of our victory and the superiority of a society that values freedom... But many people will learn from the Communists... And adopt their god-awful way of life, same as they adopted our strengths to make themselves stronger.
What's worse... Is what would happen if they win?
It was a difficult question as we both had different priorities. I concentrated on looking to the people after we secured victory. Majicou wondered if victory would matter if there is nothing worth defending in the first place.
While a product has a fixed value upon its completion, people are dynamic. A person with good work conditions and good tools and good pay can churn out something worth more than he is even paid for.
These are difficult, turbulent times. We have to balance maintaining the standards of today in order to ensure that it will be better tomorrow.
I'm sure a lot of Italians speak fucking English, Matteo you fucking liar. Even the fucking cats were staring at me.

2024.05.14 20:28 GodofWar1234 How important is Thailand to the U.S. strategy in the Asia-Pacific region?

IMO I like to think that Thailand is a critical ally. Already a designated major non-NATO US ally, in any potential new conflict with China, I think Thailand would/should play a key role in any U.S. strategy in the Indo-Pacific region.
Seeing as China has managed to develop warm relations with both Laos and Cambodia (and Myanmar too to an extent IIRC) and has a vested interest in controlling Southeast Asia, it only makes sense to harden our alliance with Thailand. To put it mildly, Thailand has always had historically rough relations with its neighbors, especially with Myanmar and Cambodia (e.g. Myanmar and Thailand historically fought several wars against one another, conquering each other’s territory and imprisoning/displacing each others populations. Doesn’t help that Burma burned down and looted Ayutthaya in 1767, a traumatic event in Thai history).
Compared to the other mainland Southeast Asian nations, Thailand is an already developed nation and therefore has the economic base to support itself w/o completely going to China.
In mainland Southeast Asia, it appears as though Thailand and Vietnam are the only stable nations left. Myanmar has effectively collapsed on itself due to the ethnic civil war while Laos and Cambodia has a ton of Chinese influence.
Thailand’s geography also lends itself strategic value, seeing as it can help reinforce any U.S. defensive positions providing overwatch over the Strait of Malacca and the Bay of Bengal. If Thailand can coordinate with Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and India, it can limit the reach of the PLAN, forcing them to be contained at least to China’s east coast. If Laos and Cambodia do anything, Thailand could help by keeping the two nations occupied on the Indochinese Peninsula. Seeing as Vietnam is having a shift of wind blowing towards the US, I don’t see why Thailand can’t be held to the same status so that two U.S. allies in mainland SE Asia can help close in on China.
The problems I see with this approach however are these:

2024.05.14 20:20 Kirati_Warrior316 So someone made a post about Nepal, here's my reply.

Namaskar.
This post is a reply to the post by u/Effective-Neat-7251. I agree pal, there's a lot of disinformation on the net so just chill and let me clarify your doubts and concerns.
The Reply:
This is one of those dumb posts on Nepal which makes me realise again and again the fact why ground knowledge is so fkin important. No offence to you OP, you are not alone and this post isn't the last of it's kind.
Nepal rushes headfirst into this whole democracy gig without really thinking it through. They slap together a constitution like it's some kind of last-minute homework assignment and expect everything to magically fall into place. Well, surprise, surprise, it doesn't work like that! You can't just declare yourself a democratic republic and expect everything to be sunshine and rainbows.
It was a long, brutal civil war spanning two decades of fighting, which only ended after the abdication of King Gyanendra who was crowned as King of Nepal after the very unfortunate incident of the "Royal Massacre", in which most members of the Nepali Royal family were murdered, including the former King Dipendra and the newly crowned Birendra. To this day, leaders of the Nepali Congress and maoist are seen as the ones who plotted the massacre.
The decision of turning into a republic was not of the people, it was infact forced upon the people.
And then there's the whole identity crisis. Nepal can't seem to make up its mind whether it wants to be secular or Hindu. It's like watching a kid trying to choose between two flavors of ice cream and ending up with a melted mess. Make up your mind already! And don't even get me started on the monarchy nonsense. Yeah, let's bring back the kings and queens because that worked out so well in the past, right?
I'm going to say this very clearly. Nepal is a Hindu country through and through. You can watch documentaries about the Nepali civil war, you'll find that so called Maoists prayed to Shiva and local Gods before going to battles.
Heck, the leader of Maoists, the so called the "leader of the revolution" and the current PM of Nepal is a Brahmin and goes to Temple in full Bhagwadhari saffron clothes and posts pictures of himself celebrating dashain (Durga Puja) with red Tilak on his forehead.
These are your so called communists.
But wait, it gets even better. China swoops in like some smooth-talking charmer, waving around its Belt and Road Initiative like it's the answer to all of Nepal's problems. And Nepal? Well, they're eating it up like candy on Halloween. Meanwhile, India's standing on the sidelines, twiddling its thumbs and watching its neighbor slip further and further away.
The important Araniko Highway was built by China, several bridges are built by Japan and Korea, the current ring road is being built by Chinese money, trains have returned to Nepal through India. Fk it there are even brigdes in Nepal to this day which were made through Soviet help.
Nepalis don't give a damn where the money is coming from. As long it's being put to good use and for the betterment of it's citizens, I don't think anyone should be bothered.
I don't even get the idea of why Indians fear Chinese presence is Nepal, which is but a grain of sand compared to Indian presence. We have pegged currency with India, an open border which allows for easy travel, billions of dollars of grants are given to Nepal every year by India, India is also Nepal's biggest trading partner.
Fk it we also have yearly military exercises and not to mention the people, culture, history and religion. WTF does China has over such things? Absolutely nothing. It's ridiculously hilarious to hear such things time and time again.
And speaking of India, what's deal? We are playing it cool like we are too good to get involved in Nepal's mess. Newsflash, We can't just sit back and watch while our neighbour gets cozy with the competition.
Trust me brother, and the people and governments of both countries, if there ever were to be a war between China and India, the most probable outcome is either Nepal remains neutral or joins India. It is more likely of Bhutan and Bangladesh to betray India than Nepal.
All in all, Indians need to chill and stop irritating the only other Hindu country in the world and also it's only real "Friend" in the world.
Again, not an ally of interest or of mutual benefit, but a real friend.
Btw the currency thing is only a move by dumb politicians, currency notes for Nepal in fact gets printed in India, not in Nepal, so you all can see how that goes.
Anyways, have a nice day/night!

2024.05.14 19:54 ewk Why doesn't meditation work? Why has NOBODY ever been enlightened through meditation? Why waste your time?

Common knowledge: No koans of sitting meditation enlightenment

One of the dirty little secrets of the vipassana, zazen, and neo-christian "awakening" movements is that no Zen Masters ever said that they were enlightened by meditation.
Why would people say that meditation is part of Zen if meditation NEVER worked as advertised?

Zen Masters warn against meditation

On of the most strident rejects of meditation comes from Zen Master Wumen, who's book of instruction was banned by the Zazen church at one point in history:
TO UNIFY AND PACIFY THE MIND IS MENTAL "QUIETISM" AND FALSE ZEN
One of Wumen's other warnings is:
Sitting blankly in Zen practice is the condition of a dead man.
That's right... sitting meditation is just practicing being a corpse.
And Wumen was basically paraphrasing the last Zen Patriarch on that one.
So why would anyone think that Zen was related to meditation?

Zazen invented by a Buddhist priest

It turns out that Zen basically kicked Buddhism out of China... and the Japanese Buddhists were afraid the same thing was going to happen to them.
So a Buddhist priest, ordained and everything, told everybody he "learned" a meditation method from Chinese Zen Masters... a claim that was entirely debunked in 1990 by Stanford scholarship.
But like many conspiracy theories, this new Buddhist meditation method helped keep Zen out of Japan, and to this day Japanese Buddhists are still arguing about what "Buddhism" means to them.

Will the real Buddhism please stand up?

www.reddit.com/zen/wiki/buddhism doesn't mention meditation at all... in fact, many prominent Buddhists are quoted but none of them mention meditation!
This, it turns out, is the motivation for people to keep a dirty little secret about meditation like "it never works"... because meditation has nothing to show for itself religiously, and has no doctrinal connection to Zen or Buddhism.
There are several interesting books about this... but why bother reading them? If meditation never produced enlightenment, and people have to lie about it being Zen just to promote it, isn't that enough to prove that meditation is a scam?

Meditation as prayer

If meditation doesn't work for enlightenment, why do people keep doing it?
Well, just like prayer, which also doesn't work, meditation gives people hope right up until they burn out and quit (very common). You won't meet anyone on the internet that has been meditating for 10+ years.

2024.05.14 19:49 Scary_Ad_8919 Chinese Professor's Remarks to Take Korean Food

I am Andrew, a high school student who is currently learning various fields of cooking at a professional cooking high school linked to Harvard High School in the United States.
Since I was young, my taste buds have developed well, and I started attending a professional cooking high school earlier than other friends, and now I am classified as a second-level student chef who can cook in a total of three specialized fields, including Korean food, which is my representative field.
Perhaps because of the direct connection with Harvard, a famous university in the United States, our high school often offers various kinds of dishes to Harvard students to test the dishes we are learning or to be evaluated for their taste.
However, not long ago, I went to take a lecture on Korean food, a high school department program offered by Harvard, and I experienced something really shocking.
As I was a professional chef focusing on Korean food, which is currently the hottest in the world, I was interested as soon as I heard that Harvard was giving a lecture on the history and ingredients of Korean food, but surprisingly, what I heard as soon as I arrived in the classroom was really ridiculous.
There, a Chinese professor began his lecture with an introduction that he had immigrated to Korea for about 10 years and an absurd remark that the roots of Korean food began with Chinese food. "My name is Sun Yue, a professor from China who immigrated to Korea as a culinary researcher for more than 10 years. Before we proceed with today's lecture on Korean food, Korea's representative dish, we need to first know the fundamental roots of Korean food. Currently, Korean food is gaining huge popularity and influence around the world. Some may taste good, but in line with the recent trend of health-conscious modern people, it is so easy to reprocess into a diet that rarely uses inappropriate ingredients. As such, Korean food must be amazing, but did you know that the roots of Korean food began with Chinese food? In other words, the field of Korean food itself is included in one of the fields of Chinese food, so it can be said that it is a representative dish of China. It means that Korean food is included in the composition of Chinese food. However, many culinary researchers, chefs, and even Korean chefs who directly deal with Korean food are not aware of this at all. This is the first reason why we need to check out the information on the marinade, the main ingredient used by Koreans. They make the most of the fermented sauces like gochujang and soybean paste for Korean food. Surprisingly, these sauces are traditional Chinese sauces from the traditional Chinese fermentation method. Many of you probably don't know this. But right now, Korea is making unscrupulous exports of its flagship sauce, Gochujang, by even adding the word K-food. Why is Korea so anxious about not stealing Chinese things?

2024.05.14 18:14 universitytown2424 Should I stay or should I go

Hi all, my first year teaching in Shenzhen. I’ve enjoyed my time here but I think it’s time for a change of pace. Shenzhen has been a decent first city, modern bustling metropolis, hiking, beaches but I think it lacks soul. Life has been a little boring after my close friends lost their jobs and moved back to old Blighty. My public school working conditions are good but the pay is quite low and will raise by only a couple peanuts if I re-new the contract. Staying in Shenzhen is the safer option in my head as my school is calm, I have a couple Chinese friends and I have a flat mate.
I now have an offer in Nanjing. Considerably higher salary but I’m sure means an increased workload especially as it’s in a private school. I haven’t read much on Nanjing all I know so far is that it’s got history and it’s bloody humid. Nanjing is more risky as I’ll have to start over again but I would like more monies and a fresh start would help reinvigorate my slightly disillusioned first year here potentially.
What I’m looking for in my next step in my China extravaganza is: keep improving my piss poor Chinese, find some new friends foreigners and locals alike, live in a new city (this will also be my final year in China), hiking, and a night out here and there.
So should I stay in Shenzhen or go to Nanjing ?
Any advice on what I should do or info about Nanjing would be much appreciated :)

2024.05.14 16:43 frostdemon34 Yesterday we discussed kaiserreich USA factions. Now we're talking about fallout factions. Who are you loyal to?

Yesterday we discussed kaiserreich USA factions. Now we're talking about fallout factions. Who are you loyal to?
For those who don't know, fallout is a game set in the US (now tv show I recommend watching), where USA and China goes to war, starts ww3 and with it ending in nuclear holocaust with the whole world gone to shit. With the US ceasing to exist those who survived are in vaults (very big fallout shelters). Everyone else just straight-up died or survived but heavily irradiated. Now people are walking around in tribes wondering what to do. So here are the factions.
The Brotherhood of steel: the Brotherhood is a paramilitary faction founded by a US Military officer with the goal of preserving technology and keeping it out of the hands from those who wants to do harm. preventing another apocalypse. Although they have good intentions, the barely have any moral compass when it comes to treating settlers.
The Enclave: like the brotherhood, they're a paramilitary state that believe in social darwinism and racism towards ghouls and mutants. They are what's left of the US governments deep state. They seek to "purify" the world from mutants, ghouls, and kill anything that isn't genetically pure and "true human."
The great khans: in simple terms, their Raiders. Inspired by Genghis khan and the Mongolian empire
New California Republic: yes California being it's own republic, with old ideas of democracy, liberty, and personal freedom. They seek to expand their borders throughout America to reunite the continent. However the NCR is not without criticism. Much like the US government, it is rampant with political corruption. Outsiders see them as a imperialists and genocidal since the NCR is known to take over territory and "civilizing" the locals. The NCR has 2 sides, they can be nice and offer diplomatic treaties that ultimately benefits everyone, or the NCR can be assholes who will force you to join the republic. However, the people would much rather be under NCR influence then their greatest enemy.
Ceasers legion: simply put, some dude read about history of the Roman empire and just called himself ceaser in order to bring his own version of the Roman empire. His Army is entirely built up of enslaved tribes who are indoctrinated into becoming extremely loyal to ceaser. Like the NCR, ceasers legion wishes to expand its borders but under a totalitarian, imperialistic, slave society dictatorship.
Mr.House: the city of New Vegas is led by a man named Mr.House. all he wishes to do is keep New Vegas safe. Literally his entire life revolves around New Vegas and keeping it under his control. He is 261 years old and he keeps himself alive by putting himself on life support.
The minutemen: based on the minutemen of the American revolution, their mission is to protect the people of the Commonwealth (new england) in a minutes notice. As it stands they're a militia built up on volunteers from different villages and towns. Probably the only faction who is objectively good.
The railroad: set in the Commonwealth, they seek to liberate synthetic humans (robots) and protect them from the Brotherhood and the Institute.
The Institute: a society entirely built up by scientists. Developing new and more advanced technology such as the synths (robots who look like humans) and teleportation. Their goal is to advance and preserve human society, but for the mean time, they are in hiding. They are well known throughout the Commonwealth as people who kidnap Commonwealth citizens and replace them with synths.
That's all the major factions, but there is so much more tiny factions. I didn't realize how much there is when looking more into the fallout lore.

Today illustrated that the Democrats have become America’s cheerleaders, emphasizing how investment in the nation’s infrastructure has created jobs and rebuilt the country. This week, the Biden-Harris administration is touting its investments in rebuilding roads and bridges, making sure Americans have clean water, getting rid of pollution, expanding access to high-speed internet, and building a clean energy economy, contrasting that success with Trump’s eternal announcements of an “Infrastructure Week” that never came.
The White House today announced that it has awarded nearly $454 billion in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including more than 56,000 projects across more than 4,500 communities across the nation. Those include fixing more than 165,000 miles of roads and more than 9,400 bridges and improving more than 450 ports and 300 airport terminals. It has funded more than 1,400 drinking water and wastewater projects and projects to replace up to 1.7 million toxic lead pipes, as well as more than 8,000 low- and zero-emission buses. It has funded 95 previously unfunded Superfund projects to clean up contaminated sites. It has improved the electrical grid and funded 12,000 miles of high-speed internet infrastructure, and exposed internet junk fees.
The White House explained that this investment is making it cheaper to install clean energy technology and lowering families’ monthly energy bills, and highlighted today the available rebates to enable people to take advantage of the new technologies.
On Wednesday, May 8, a report from the Semiconductor Industry Association and the Boston Consulting Group explored the “breathtaking speed,” as the president of the semiconductor organization put it, at which the industry is growing. In the Financial Times on May 9, John Thornhill reported that the CHIPS and Science Act, which provided a $39 billion investment in the semiconductor industry, has “primed a torrent of private sector investment.” With the influx of both federal money and an additional $447 billion of private investment in 83 projects in 25 states, the report forecasts that the U.S. will increase its share of global manufacturing capacity for leading-edge chips from today’s rate of 0% to 28% by 2032. Thornhill compared this investment to that spurred by Russia’s 1957 launch of the Sputnik satellite.
The Economist yesterday announced that the U.S. “is in the midst of an extraordinary startup boom,” and explored “[h]ow the country revived its “go-getting spirit.”
In contrast to the Democrats’ confidence in America, the Republicans are all-in on the idea that the country is an apocalyptic wasteland. At a rally in New Jersey Saturday, Trump announced: “On day one we will throw out Bidenomics and reinstate MAGAnomics.” He promised to extend his 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations.
But the gist of his speech was an angry, vitriolic picture of a failing nation full of “enemies” that are “more dangerous” than China and Russia and who are “going to destroy our country.” In his telling, the criminal case against him in Manhattan is “bullsh*t,” and President Biden has done more damage than the “ten worst presidents in the history of our country” combined: “[h]e’s a fool; he’s not a smart man…[h]e’s a bad guy…the worst president ever, of any country. The whole world is laughing at him.”
Trump lied that other countries are “emptying out their mental institutions into the United States, our beautiful country. And now the prison populations all over the world are down. They don’t want to report that the mental-institution population is down because they’re taking people from insane asylums and from mental institutions.” Then he riffed into “the late great Hannibal Lecter,” the fictional murderer and cannibal in the film The Silence of the Lambs, apparently to suggest that similar individuals are migrating to the U.S.
House Republicans this week are working to pass a nonbinding resolution to condemn Biden’s immigration policies, although it was Republicans, under orders from Trump, who killed a strong bipartisan immigration bill earlier this year.
The only way to turn back this apocalypse, Trump and his supporters insist, is to put Trump and his team back into the White House. From there, Republicans will return those they consider “real” Americans to power.
The last few days have added new information about what that means. On Thursday, May 9, Senators Katie Britt (R-AL), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Kevin Cramer (R-ND) introduced the More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed (MOMS) act. Britt—who is best known for her disastrous response to Biden’s State of the Union speech from her kitchen—said the measure would provide a federal database of resources for pregnant women and women parenting young children, but that information excludes anything that touches on abortion.
The measure is clear that it enlists the government in opposition to abortion, but more than that, it establishes that the government will create a database of the names and contact information of pregnant women, which the government can then use “to follow up with users on additional resources that would be helpful for the users to review.”
A government database of pregnant women would give the federal government unprecedented control over individuals, and it is especially chilling after the story Caroline Kitchener broke in the Washington Post on May 3, that a Texas man, Collin Davis, filed a petition to stop his ex-partner from traveling to Colorado, where abortion is legal, to obtain an abortion. Should she do so, his lawyer wrote, he would “pursue wrongful-death claims against anyone involved in the killing of his unborn child.” Now Davis wants to be able to depose his former partner along with others he says are “complicit” in the abortion.
Antiabortion activists are also seeking to make mifepristone and misoprostol, drugs used in many abortions, hard to obtain. In Louisiana, state lawmakers are considering classifying the drugs as “controlled dangerous substances,” which would make possessing them carry penalties of up to ten years in prison and fines of up to $75,000.
More than 240 Louisiana doctors wrote to lawmakers saying that the drugs have none of the addictive characteristics associated with dangerous controlled substances and warning that the drugs are crucial for inducing routine labor and preventing catastrophic hemorrhage after delivery, in addition to their use in abortions. “Given its historically poor maternal health outcomes, Louisiana should prioritize safe and evidence-based care for pregnant women,” the doctors wrote.
Louisiana lawmakers also rejected a bill that would have allowed anyone under age 17, the age of consent in Louisiana, to have an abortion if they became pregnant after rape or incest. Passionate testimony from those who suffered such attacks or who treated pregnant girls as young as 8 failed to convince the Republican lawmakers to support the measure. “That baby [in the womb] is innocent.… We have to hang on to that,” said Republican state representative Dodie Horton.
Today, at the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization promoting Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander participation and representation at all levels of the political process, Vice President Kamala Harris encouraged young people to innovate and to move into spaces from which they have been traditionally excluded.
“So here’s the thing about breaking barriers,” she said. “Breaking barriers does not mean you start on one side of the barrier and you end up on the other side. There’s breaking involved. And when you break things you get cut. And you may bleed. And it is worth it every time…. We have to know that sometimes people will open the door for you and leave it open. Sometimes they won’t. And then you need to kick that f*cking door down.”
Harris’s advice reflects the history that happened on this date in 1862, when the enslaved mariners on board the shallow-draft C.S.S. Planter gathered up their families, fired up the ship’s boilers, and sailed out of the Charleston, South Carolina, harbor. The three white officers of the ship had gone ashore, leaving enslaved 23-year-old pilot Robert Smalls to take control. Smalls knew how to steer the ship and give the proper signals to the Confederates at Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, and three other checkpoints.
Smalls piloted the Planter, the sixteen formerly enslaved people on it, and a head full of intelligence about the Confederate fortifications at Charleston to the U.S. Navy. In Confederate hands, the Planter had surveyed waterways and laid mines; now that information was in U.S. hands. Smalls went on to pilot naval vessels during the war, and in 1864 he bought the house formerly owned by the man who had enslaved him.
A natural leader, Smalls went on to become a businessman, politician, and strong advocate for education. After serving in the 1868 South Carolina Constitutional Convention that made school attendance compulsory and provided for universal male suffrage, he went on to serve in the South Carolina legislature from 1868 to 1874, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served until 1887. When President Barack Obama signed an executive order establishing the nation’s first national monument concerning Reconstruction, he cited the life of Robert Smalls.

2024.05.14 15:38 copperjester Villedieu-les-Poêles: The history of the city's copper workshops after WWII from the perspective of Yves Gautier.

An article published in a French newspaper in 2022. I did a makeshift translation into German at the time and have now translated it into English. I hope it is reasonably comprehensible.
Coppersmithing is a family history that goes back several centuries to the Gautiers. Yves Gautier, born in 1948, was trained in the craft by his father Paul and several coppersmiths from Villedieu (Manche). He himself trained his son Hervé in this trade. Alongside the production workshop, the Gautier family has been running a copper store in the city center since 1973.
Copper would have gone out of fashion
The development of Villedieu, city of copper, Yves rejects it by heart. The town reached its peak in the years 1960-1975, when copper was omnipresent in the town center. Even the stores that were engaged in another activity also sold it in the summer. The decline began in the 1980s. Sixteen copper stores have closed since 2002. Before that date, thirteen had already brought down the curtain, says Yves Gautier. Most of the producers have disappeared and many of their machines have gone to Africa. In 1999, there were still eighteen craftsmen working with copper. Today there are only four of us left in the business.
The reasons for such a fall are obvious to him: "Copper, like antique furniture, has gone out of fashion. The highway caused by the detour of the road river that previously ran through Villedieu also hurt.
To prevent imported brass from taking over the Villedieu copper brand, Yves Gautier had founded the Fabricants cuivres de Villedieu association in the 1990s. Now dormant, it aimed to differentiate itself at the time from some copper objects that were sold locally but came from Morocco, China and India.
A loyal clientele
Today, however, Villedieu's copper craftsmanship has a good reputation and is still sought after by a loyal French and foreign clientele, the latter particularly looking for beautiful pieces. Cookware, pans, jam pans always sell well, as do some decorative and indoor copper pieces, he notes. You have to be creative. I make kerosene lamps, umbrella holders, kettles, small bells, tins, insulated buckets by combining copper, pewter, brass. Not to mention the rarer pieces of old steamed coppersmiths that are very present in the store.
For the future of Villedieu's copper, we must continue to innovate by producing new models, working at the top of the range and having a long-term vision. I hope that the two stores in the city center will remain and why not, that new ones will open in the future, he hopes.
At the age of 74, Yves Gautier still has the satisfaction of seeing a professional life dedicated to copper craftsmanship being passed on from father to son once again. Hervé will take over the family store in a few months' time.

2024.05.14 15:11 TheGoHistorian New book: Encyclopaedia of Classical Go Problems, Volume 1

New book: Encyclopaedia of Classical Go Problems, Volume 1
ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF CLASSICAL GO PROBLEMS
Volume 1: "Wangyou Qingle Ji" and "Xuanxuan Qijing"
by John Fairbairn
New book by John Fairbairn
You want a book that makes learning life & death go problems fun, that helps you understand and remember all those wrinkles, that makes sense of all those knotty themes, that provides comprehensive solutions at pro level? In short, a book that can be considered definitive?
Well, here it is. This is the first volume of a projected series of problems from the Chinese classics. Japan and Korea often rehashed these works - as did the Chinese themselves, of course - but their main sources were the Chinese editions that go back a millennium.
This definitive volume goes back to the earliest two known collections, the Wangyou Qingle Ji (Carefree & Innocent Pastime Collection) and the truly seminal Xuanxuan Qiqing (Gateway to All Marvels). It thus covers over 500 problems, ranging from superhard to cute. Each one was named. Many are beautiful, difficult, highly practical - or all three - but all are memorable. The names enhance the interest, understanding and memorisation if the problems, while also usually offering a clue to the solutions. The name of every problem is explained here, often in some depth (so giving a unique insight into Chinese history and culture). The fullest possible solutions (over 1,400 solution diagrams) are given on the basis of several centuries of opinions by the most expert players of the time in China, Japan and Korea. Sometimes the professionals differ among themselves! Some problems have over twenty variation diagrams. All known variants of each problem are given. This sometimes means a different solution to each alternative! This, too, promotes deep understanding of the problems.
In addition, all the various themes - around 70 - that occur in the problems (many newly identified here) are listed and explained in the solutions and in an overall thematic index. Not only are problems categorised, but the themes can be seen in order of frequency and thus importance. The combination of names, interesting allusions, and identifiable themes further ensures that reader can truly absorb both the shapes and the dynamic principles inherent in each problem. The large number of variants further allows the reader to understand and remember the wrinkles within each theme.
The modern Chinese characters for each name are given and indexed, and a character-conversion appendix is also provided for those familiar with traditional characters via Japanese or Korean. There is also a very comprehensive general index (10 pages) to the text.
The book is in a large and well illustrated "coffee-table" format of 500 pages, and employs colour. It is the sort of book that graces and justifies that expensive kaya board you invested in.
WYQLJ = 37 problems, 90 solution diagrams
XXQJ = 466 problems, 1,313 solution diagrams
Total = 503 problems, 1,403 solution diagrams
Available worldwide on demand from Amazon/Kindle Publishing from May 2024.
[Note that, in some respects, this book is a paper representation of the e-book Gateway To All Marvels (GTAM), but has been significantly expanded as regards problems, and the Wangyou Qingle Ji section is new. It does, however, exclude the old texts and other GTAM material not relating to the problems.
Volume 2, already approaching the proofreading stage, will present the problems of the Shichi Xianji and Xianji Wuku (both Wood and Leather volumes) in similar exhaustive format. Volume 3 is planned to be the Guanzi Pu.]
Details of many other go books available on www.gogodonline.co.uk.

2024.05.14 15:11 ThatKir TuesdAMA: ThatKir

Regular public interviews given in formal and informal settings are a defining feature of the Zen records across their history.
The formal public interviews weren't limited to Zen Masters "ascending the chair" in the monastic commune and answering questions from regular Preceptors, long-distance travelers, or laypeople; the Zen records also show that we have Zen Masters being invited to the court of various potentates with Zhaozhou, Huangbo, and the various "National Teachers", such as Huizhong being prime examples. In attendance at the court interviews were occaisonally religious leaders of a Buddhist or Daoist persuasian that tried (and failed) to shut down the conversation.
Naturally, these sorts of formal interviews would be known for some time in advance and everybody would have ample time to come up with a real good question to try and nail the Zen Master with. Records of formal interviews, such as Huangbo's Transmission of Mind text involve highly educated people asking questions and follow-up questions that are evidence of the high-stakes nature of it all.
One slip up and it ends up written down.
Just as a therapist might start an engagement by asking "What brings you to therapy?" or a hiring manager might start by asking "What's your educational background?" Zen Masters and their communities frequently start of an engagement by asking a question.
A couple examples of this are the famous "What do they teach where you come from?" from Yangshan as well as the less-famous Budai's "What do you call this?"
(Found below is part of case from Budai:)
At times when the crowds on the boulevard would swell, Budai would open up his bag, dump it all out on the street, and exclaim, ”Look, look!”
He would then pick things up, item by item, whilst asking passersby, ”What do you call this!?”
Over the years at /Zen, we have put together some "standard questions" that test both people's willingness to sincerely engage with the Zen tradition of public Q & A as well as their understanding of this tradition.

Standard Questions

1) Where have you just come from?

Seeking for no dharma within; establishing no dharmas without.

2) What's your text?

I've been reading and taking extensive notes on Mingben's Illusory Man. That's the text I've come back to again and again since we first received an English translation of it from Mr. Dufficy a few years back. Part of the charm of reading Zen texts is that every single engagement involves answering the questions that the text poses as well as bringing forth different aspects of it for consideration.
It's a lot like coming back to Romeo & Juliet by watching a theatre production of a it, listening to a recording of it, or watching a film adaption of it, having read it in print.
Mingben is at the tail-end of Zen in China and the type of instruction he gives in his text seems very clearly tied to the collapse of society, literacy, and conversation around him. To wit, "Why are crows black?" is very much a non-starter for dharma-conversation in Zen.

3) Dharma low tides?

In general, people going around trying to find imaginary "high tides" to escape "low tides" just aren't engaging in Zen study. Conceiving of the Zen dharma as a matter of "tides" is like chasing after an imaginary haze in the distance in the belief that it will satisfy thirst.
Part of the history of this question on /Zen comes from the fact that religious-meditators in the not-Zen Dogenist religion were not satisfied with the results of their asceticism since it didn't resolve the doubts that initially spurred them to engage in prolonged sitting for medically and mentally unhealthy lengths of time.
As evidenced by the the decade of attempted AMA's (some of which are recorded here), the only type of answers that the religiously inclinded provide to the obviously-distressed askers of this sort of question boil down to stuff like "pray-meditate harder", "just believe", or "discuss with your Priest".
That is not Zen.
It's also the sort of stuff that pisses Zen Masters off.
Deshan:
I see that wherever you go you determine to learn Buddhism in the assembly of some old baldy, taking on a load without concern for your body or life. All of you have had your eyes nailed shut and your root of life severed. You’re like two or three hundred whores. You say your regal sway sets up the banner of the teaching to open the eyes of later generations; but can you even save yourselves?
Yunmen:
"These old shavepates everywhere! Sitting on round chairs and long [meditation] benches, they want to acquire fame and profit. Asked about Buddha, they answer 'Buddha,' and asked about patriarch they answer 'patriarch,' and they shit and piss. [What they say] is just like information passed around among boondock grannies. They don't even know good from bad!
"You're all just like them; [you ought to] have trouble to consume even water [with a good conscience]."
Zhenjing:
For no reason [people that claim to know] sit in pits of crap fooling spirits and ghosts. When people are like this, what crime is there is killing them by the thousands and feeding them to the dogs?

2024.05.14 14:42 EnvironmentalMix1643 It subreddit turned me into a self-hating Chinese person for a few months ago...

I hope I'm not the only one who is having this phase.
I'm ethically Chinese, but I was born in Canada. Ever since my birth, I've adopted Western philosophy into my life. A few years ago, my parents were concerned for me because they though I was losing touch with my Chinese heritage. I agreed with them and decided to educate myself on Chinese culture. Long story short, I found myself diverging to Chinese history rather than traditional Chinese culture. I've learn some horrible events the CCP, as well as many other freedom oppressing political parties for that matter, has commited. It was until I discover this subreddit where I really went down the rabbit hole. Some of the things I've saw on this subreddit made feel ashamed to be Chinese. I think this sounds fucked up, but I used to make fun of my own race by playing the typical stereotypes and shit talking about Chinese people. I had an identity crisis since I don't associate myself with the People's Republic of China not Canada (I think it's foolish to be proud of your birth country since I can't chose it). I was essentially "countryless Chinese". Thankfully, I was able to pull myself out and I can confidently say I am proud to be Chinese.
edit: sorry for the grammer mistake. I was typing on my phone which Im not proficient
