2024.05.03 18:58 Oiyouinthebushes Good Law Project crowdfunding for legal advice on NHS trans youth guidance

Had this passed to me by a friend if anyone has a few spare pennies to throw into the pot. The NHS being underhanded with trans people? Who would have thought?
Here’s the full text:
“Good Law Project has seen an alarming leaked document from NHS England regarding children and young people’s healthcare. The document, which does not bear the name of any NHS professional, asks providers of mental health support to children and young people (CYP) to invite those on the national waiting list for gender services for a face-to-face appointment. Providers are told: “We request all CYP who have been allocated to your service for mental health review are assessed as soon as possible.” One group is asked to be “reviewed and or assessed by… 30 June 2024.”
To enable providers to satisfy this request, they are allocated further funding for an initial face-to-face assessment – but no recurrent funding. We assume what is being sought and funded is (at best) an assessment and onward referral to already long waiting lists for mental health services or for autism/ADHD support.
As part of this process, children and young people on the waiting list for trans healthcare have been sent a “Gender Experience Summary Form”, asking them or their families whether they are receiving support from “the private sector or from abroad… such as… hormone treatment.”
The reality for all but a tiny minority of trans youth is that treatment is not available on the NHS. And regulatory harassment has diminished the pool of UK-based private providers of trans healthcare to almost nothing.
Against this background, the document recognises that many trans youth will have sourced hormone treatment from “unregulated providers or unregulated sources.” It states that the largest “unregulated provider” is a service called GenderGP, which it says is “registered overseas and is therefore outside the reach of the UK health regulators.” Good Law Project holds no brief for GenderGP but obviously “registered overseas” is not the same as “unregulated.” Nevertheless, the document seems to treat the two as one and the same.
At the assessment, providers are asked to “advise” the child or young person and their parent/carer not to take puberty blockers or gender-affirming hormones obtained through these routes without appropriate care. NHS England does not identify what “appropriate care” is and it is hard to see what available care it would describe as regulated.
Providers are told not to prescribe or to stop prescribing puberty blockers or gender-affirming hormones. They are also told that if the trans child or young person and/or their family “disregards your advice and you consider that this puts the child/young person at increased risk, then a safeguarding referral may also be appropriate in line with standard safeguarding approaches.”
It seems to us – and to those inside the NHS who have leaked the document to us – that what purports to be an “assessment” in fact an exercise in bringing very significant pressure to bear on trans youth and their families to cease private treatment, backed up with a threat of a safeguarding referral to social services if they do not.
Good Law Project has also seen a sample email sent to a parent of a young trans person. It tells a very different story to the internal NHS England guidance. It says:
“We understand it cannot be easy for [name] having to wait a long time to be seen by specialist Gender Services. Therefore, the NHS wanted to offer them some support through local Children and Young People Mental Health Services [CAMHS].”
Of course, no new funding is being made available for support – just an assessment. In the last year, the average wait time for CAMHS was over three months and more than 40,000 children had been waiting over two years for treatment.
The email goes on to suggest the provider may decide “clinical support would be best provided by your GP”. However, the NHS England document tells providers “not to continue prescribing puberty blockers or gender-affirming hormones”, so this also feels rather misleading.
We are concerned about what appears to be a misleading exercise in gathering data on which trans youth are obtaining private treatment from abroad, for the purposes of seeking to cause or compel them to stop treatment.
Good Law Project is taking urgent advice from a specialist King’s Counsel and solicitors. We do not know whether it will be possible to take legal action. In the meantime, we suggest that families receiving these emails think very carefully about whether they participate in an exercise that is not fairly described.
If you would like to contribute to the costs of our legal advice, you can do so on this page.”

FAQ

I live in Panama/Canada/Barbados/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!
Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.
Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?
Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.
Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?
Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).
Can I donate all my money to you?
No
Can you help me promote my game?
Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.
Your list is full of errors and now my favourite Facebook ads won't load!
Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on not green M&M's, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

2024.04.14 10:44 senpai57000 PEL - Wustenrot

Hi guys,
Wondering if anyone of you has ever had the same issue and how you dealt with it.
I have opened a PEL with Wustenrot to deduct it from my yearly taxes. So far so good.
Today, I would like to use the money to partially pay my mort gage from my main residence, which falls under the allowed criteria.
I contacted the company, explained them that I would like to attribute the savings and use the funds. They 1st reply that I must reach 40% of the amount subscribed, which is fine I just need to transfer 2,000€. And then, said that I cannot because the contract is less than 10 years old.
The only way to get the money is to terminate the contract but if I do so, they will communicate to the tax authority for me to pay what I have deducted the past 6 years …
I don’t understand, the whole purpose of this contract was to finance my main residence and now that I need the money they refuse … especially they don’t even pay 0,5% interest per year.
I have reached out to the ACD but they said I must check with the company to « attribute » the sum and as explained they don’t want before 2028 …
I feel a bit robbed here

Financial Condition / Capital Resources
During the three months ended January 31, 2024, the Company recorded a net loss of $685,928 and, as of January 31, 2024, the Company had an accumulated deficit of $47,536,228 and working capital of $2,316,098. The Company is maintaining its Woxna Graphite Mine on a “production-ready” basis to minimize costs and is conducting ongoing research and development to produce higher value specialty products. The Company is also evaluating a potential restart of production at the Woxna Graphite Mine. The Company anticipates that it has sufficient funding to meet anticipated levels of corporate administration and overheads for the ensuing twelve months however, it will need additional capital to provide working capital and recommence operations at the Woxna Graphite Mine, establish a production facility for the Anode Project, to fund future development of the Norra Karr Property or to complete exploration activities in Romania. There is no assurance such additional capital will be available to the Company on acceptable terms or at all. In the longer term the recoverability of the carrying value of the Company’s long-lived assets is dependent upon the Company’s ability to preserve its interest in the underlying mineral property interests, the discovery of economically recoverable reserves, the achievement of profitable operations and the ability of the Company to obtain financing to support its ongoing exploration programs and mining operations.
Outlook
We continue to see European policy initiatives increasingly taking shape as industrial policy, hardly seen in the western world since WW2. The object of improving European competitiveness is clear. We have in previous notes followed how this has developed via the general climate agenda, the Critical Raw Materials Act and the Net-Zero Industry Act. Relevant to us is that one of the fundamental starting points is access to raw materials and process technologies of these.
Woxna Graphite Mine
We maintain our built and permitted Woxna graphite mine and plant on care and maintenance, while monitoring market signals to consider a restart of graphite concentrate production, as the first step to developing a downstream anode business. Despite the looming demand-supply deficit, flake graphite prices have remained weak this past year. [1] Increased capacity in Chinese synthetic graphite production has been an important factor [2] [3]
Of course, this offers Sweden a great opportunity as a producer, and Woxna a first mover advantage to help address this.
Norra Kärr Heavy Rare Earth Project
At our Norra Kärr development project, we are working fully focused on our mining lease application. We aim to have this submitted within 12 months from now.
As this is done based on the new 2021 design of this project, we are benefitting from authorities and other stakeholders evaluating the merits of the project based on recent plans that substantially reduce the potential for environmental risk. During this year we plan to establish an office near site from which this work and the important initiatives around social license and stakeholder engagement will be carried out.
Norra Kärr, as one of the largest HREE deposits globally, and the most advanced one in the EU, has the potential to be a cornerstone supplier to Western magnet producers [4]
Additionally, with Sweden recently having joined NATO, we feel the importance of Norra Kärr may become more pronounced also outside the EU.
Bihor Sud Nickel-Cobalt Exploration Project
Since having obtained permission to enter our underground galleries last year, this project has been advancing rapidly. As we have reported during the past year, we have encountered and assayed high grades of Co-Ni-Au and Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag mineralization’s over large distances underground.
These results confirm our belief that this is a high prospective exploration project with potential for both scale and high-grade mineralization.
We have retained possession of an underground drill, which is being prepared to be put to work in areas from the inside of the G4 and G7 galleries.
During spring we plan a surface drill program on 50-100 m deep geophysical anomalies and to explore the depth extent of G7 Co-Ni-mineralization.
Additionally, we have entered our next target, Gallery 2, for which we have high expectations.
As far as exploration projects go, we feel that this is an exceptional one, and we are hopeful for plenty of news flow during the coming quarters.

2024.02.01 16:20 AWierzOne Weekly development round up 2.1.24

It was a busy week!
Lancaster halts commercial residential projects for 1 year (buffalonews.com)
The moratorium is necessary, according to the law, because Lancaster “has experienced significant and rapid growth” and its zoning code does not adequately address commercial residential development. The temporary halt is also needed to address issues such as “adequate water supply and sewer capacity, potential road improvements and the continued maintenance of green spaces.”
Marrano Homes starts construciton on Stonham Place townhomes in Williamsville - Buffalo Business First (bizjournals.com)
Marrano Homes is ready to begin construction on a new townhome community in Williamsville.
Stonham Place will be a 27-unit development on just over 3.5 acres of land off Main Street. The price for units will go into the upper $500,000s, according to Marrano.
Each will feature two bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a full basement and a two-car garage.
Ellicott seeks green light for 880 Elmwood Lofts project (buffalonews.com)
The Buffalo-based developer wants to construct a wood-framed apartment house at 878-880 Elmwood, bringing nine apartments to a pair of vacant lots in the Elmwood Village, between Lafayette and West Delavan avenues. One of those lots, at 878 Elmwood, formerly had a century-old house that was recently torn down, while the other previously had a house that was devastated by a fire.
New Marine Drive Apartments in Buffalo will be smaller (buffalonews.com)
Instead of 738 apartments as originally planned, it will have 686 – a reduction of 52 units but still up from 616 currently. And it will create a new configuration of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units to fit the current and expanded population, along with 855 parking spaces, 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and commercial space, a community center, a public plaza and green space.
State awards $10M downtown revitalization grant to Tonawanda, $4.5M each to Gowanda and Aurora (buffalonews.com)
The City of Tonawanda, the Town of Aurora and the Village of Gowanda have been awarded state grants totaling nearly $20 million to help the communities revitalize their downtowns by capitalizing on their waterfronts, natural assets and small-town charm.
The funds, through the state's Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward programs, are designed to accelerate transformations of municipalities with walkable urban cores that have the potential for change but need financial help to get there.
Big Reveal: Park75 - Buffalo Rising
Cedarland kicks off Emerald South redevelopment into Park75 (buffalonews.com)
The Buffalo-based developer owned by Dr. Fadi Dagher and Kevin Dagher is undertaking a $16.75 million conversion of the 58,000-square-foot building at 1175 Delaware, creating 84 new apartments in the neighborhood adjacent to Canisius High School.
Dubbed Park75 to evoke a higher level of housing, the new high-end complex will feature a mixture of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments – of which 30% will be fully furnished to capture a segment of the market that seeks a turnkey option.
The Barton Apartments Opens in Elmwood Crossing - Buffalo Rising
Sinatra and Co. opens luxury apartments in Elmwood Crossing - Buffalo Business First (bizjournals.com)
Sinatra & Co. Real Estate has finished renovating a former hospital building into 24 luxury apartments, part of the larger Elmwood Crossing redevelopment in the Elmwood Village in Buffalo.
The Barton Apartments at 140 Hodge Ave. was once part of the Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. Sinatra has transformed half of the four-story building into The Barton Apartments.
People Inc. led the redevelopment of the other half of the buliding, and last year opened Folwell Senior Apartments, a 44-unit affordable housing community for residents 62 and older.
Next phase of Buffalo's Northland expansion gets closer (buffalonews.com)
The third phase of the project, which is currently in the planning stage, involves redevelopment of 541 E. Delavan Ave. and a secondary building at 612 Northland, plus new parking and creation of a clean-energy microgrid with upgrades to an electrical substation that Buffalo Urban Development Corp. owns.
Tesla to install $500M supercomputer in Buffalo (buffalonews.com)
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that two giant computing projects totaling more than $900 million in state and private-sector investment are coming to the Buffalo area, as advanced technology and especially artificial intelligence take on an increasingly prominent role in business and life in general.
Tesla Inc., the electric vehicle maker, will spend more than $500 million over five years to install the Dojo supercomputer it is developing at its RiverBend gigafactory in South Buffalo, Hochul said.

On marketplace I keep getting people saying that my account needs to be upgraded to a buisness account in order so they can pay me and for that they have to send an extra like 300$ is this even a real thing? I swear it’s like every person that reaches out does this I’m so confused

2023.11.13 01:35 Britannia_Saxonica The UN and WHO take a stand against the mentally retarded Psychiatric establishment :

Psychiatrists routinely commit crimes against humanity. In October, the WHO and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights jointly published a lengthy document, Mental Health, Human Rights, and Legislation, It is a full-throated call for liberty and freedom for those that historically have been called “mad” :
https://iris.who.int/bitstream/handle/10665/373126/9789240080737-eng.pdf
https://www.madinamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/9789240025707-eng.pdf
This is a call that challenges how psychiatry is practiced today and ultimately challenges its power in society. Psychiatry asserts that it has the medical authority to deem certain people “mentally ill,” and that such people can be forcibly treated because they suffer from “anosognosia” and thus lack awareness that they are ill and in need of treatment. That assertion is what gives psychiatry and society a moral fig leaf for locking people up and injecting them with a powerful antipsychotic against their will: Such treatment is for the person’s own good.
However, with this publication, the WHO and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights are stating, with great clarity: no more. Forced treatment should be understood as a gross violation of human rights and must end.
Psychiatrists are relatively mentally retarded :
A study by Drs. Phillips and Kronlund of the University of Washington showed that most doctors' assessments of the risks of various operations, procedures, and medications (even in their own specialties) were way off the mark, often by several orders of magnitude. I once had a conversation with a doctor who, within approximately twenty minutes, stated that a certain procedure he was contemplating (a) had a one-chance-in-a-million risk associated with it; (6) was 99 percent safe; and (c) usually went quite well. Given the fact that so many doctors seem to believe that there must be at least eleven people in the waiting room if they're to avoid being idle, I'm not surprised at this evidence of their innumeracy.
Prescription drugs are the third leading cause of death after cancer and heart disease in the USA and Europe.
In the 1970s, psychiatry was facing a legitimacy crisis , so the American psychiatrist Robert Spitzer blatantly rigged the DSM field trials with a linguistic sleight of hand. So we have the situation today where the DSM-5 field trials were a complete failure e.g. the social construct of schizophrenia cannot be reliably diagnosed between different clinicians e.g. the intra-reliable statistical kappa scores for schizophrenia is only .46 but it needs a score of .70 or above to be satisfactory or better. Furthermore, mathematically the concept of schizophrenia is too diffuse to be usable in the scientific context e.g. two different people can be diagnosed , with it, using two different non-overlapping sets of symptoms . Picture a venn or venn-like diagram :
A “set” : a group of mathematical elements or objects
*it is important to note the DSM-5 field trials were a mathematical or statistical failure not just for schizophrenia but all or most so called ‘mental disorders’ or ‘mental illnesses’ in general :
But Haven’t Brain Scans and Genetic Research Proven Brain Disease?
Published in the journal Neuron in 2022, Raymond Dolan—considered one of the most influential neuroscientists in the world—co-authored “Functional Neuroimaging in Psychiatry and the Case for Failing Better,” concluding, “Despite three decades of intense neuroimaging research, we still lack a neurobiological account for any psychiatric condition.” Reflecting on the more than 16,000 neuroimaging articles published during the last 30 years, Dolan and his co-authors concluded: “It remains difficult to refute a critique that psychiatry’s most fundamental characteristic is its ignorance. . . . Casting a cold eye on the psychiatric neuroimaging literature invites a conclusion that despite 30 years of intense research and considerable technological advances, this enterprise has not delivered a neurobiological account (i.e., a mechanistic explanation) for any psychiatric disorder, nor has it provided a credible imaging-based biomarker of clinical utility.”
What about genetic correlates to “serious mental illnesses”? A 2020 study in Schizophrenia Bulletin reported that no genetic variants have been found to predict schizophrenia; as no significant difference was found in the genetic variance of people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and people without such a diagnosis. Similarly, examining mood disorders, a 2021 investigation published in the Journal of Affective Disorders(that included 5,872 cases and 43,862 controls, and examined 22,028 genes), reported that the study “fails to identify genes influencing the probability of developing a mood disorder” and “no gene or gene set produced a statistically significant result.”
In 2011, Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) from 2002-2015 , acknowledged: “Whatever we’ve been doing for five decades, it ain’t working. When I look at the numbers—the number of suicides, the number of disabilities, the mortality data—it’s abysmal, and it’s not getting any better.” In 2017, Insel told Wired: “I spent 13 years at NIMH really pushing on the neuroscience and genetics of mental disorders, and when I look back on that I realize that while I think I succeeded at getting lots of really cool papers published by cool scientists at fairly large costs—I think $20 billion—I don’t think we moved the needle in reducing suicide, reducing hospitalizations, improving recovery for the tens of millions of people who have mental illness.” In 2021,New York Times reporter Benedict Carey, after covering psychiatry for twenty years, concluded that psychiatry had done “little to improve the lives of the millions of people living with persistent mental distress. Almost every measure of our collective mental health—rates of suicide, anxiety, depression, addiction deaths, psychiatric prescription use—went the wrong direction, even as access to services expanded greatly.”
Psychiatrists are relatively mentally retarded superstitious primitive witch-doctors :
B.F. Skinner's famous experiment, performed on pigeons is one which should be read, marked, learned and inwardly digested by not only people involved in self study, but also religionists, astrologizers, superstitionists, allopaths and others of their ilk. What Skinner did was to place hungry pigeons in a so-called Skinner box, which would drop food grains to the pigeon at random times. What Skinner found is that, if food were dropped when a pigeon was performing some particular action (e.g., strutting, grooming, scratching, etc), the food would "reinforce" the behavior, so that the hungry pigeon would tend to perform such behavior in order to get more food. Thus a pigeon, after some time in a Skinner box, would be found to be performing some action over and over, thus indicating that it had developed a "superstition" about how it could cause food to appear -- a superstition which would become more and more strongly reinforced as the pigeon was "rewarded" for this behavior by the random appearance of food. (Note: Skinner was a behaviorist, and thus did not believe in the existence of mentality apart from its behavioral manifestations; hence superstition to him meant merely "behaving superstitiously". Please don't ask me if he knew the difference between when he was awake and when he was not.)
One does not have to be a rocket scientist to see that Skinnerian reinforcement is the basis of not only superstition and religion, but also all kinds of other misbehaviors, particularly allopathy. That is, a person gets sick, he goes to the doctor, the doctor gives him a pill, he gets well, and Voila! -- he (and the doctor) thinks there is a relation between what the doctor did and the fact that he got well, when in fact there may be no relation and -- as many of us well know -- we would probably have gotten well sooner without the doctor. This situation is exacerbated by the so-called placebo effect , i.e., the fact that irrelevant "cures" are successful in curing 1/3 of all diseases anyway -- or at least that 1/3 of us get well after visiting the doctor (please don't ask what happens to the other 2/3).**
The diagnosis of schizophrenia (my current ‘diagnosis’) is so absurd and nonsensical that one would have to be a moronic humanist (e.g. Poet vs Physicist) to believe it :
“With respect to mental illness, validity means calling something a disease or illness that actually is a disease or illness. In every era, we see human conditions that are so disturbing, frightening, and enraging that they are labeled as either immoral, criminal, or a mental illness—and it is taboo to challenge these labels. The DSM criteria for schizophrenia consists of the following: the presence of two or more of the following behaviors with at least one of them being from the first three listed: (1) delusions; (2) hallucinations; (3) disorganized speech; (4) grossly disorganized behavior; and (5) negative symptoms (which include apathy, lack of emotion, poor social functioning, and difficulty following instructions). By 1968, it was obvious to psychologist Don Bannister that DSM criteria makes schizophrenia “a concept so diffuse as to be unusable in a scientific context.” Specifically, it is possible for one individual to be diagnosed with schizophrenia based on two symptoms that are completely different than the two symptoms of another individual similarly diagnosed. Bannister put it this way: “The two people are now firmly grouped in the same category while not specifically possessing any common characteristics.”
When critics of the construct of schizophrenia say that “schizophrenia doesn’t exist,” they don’t mean that people with the above behaviors don’t exist. Rather, they mean that the term “schizophrenia” is used as simply a wastebasket for disturbing behaviors, and it is not a scientifically valid construct. Thus it is no surprise for genuine scientists that schizophrenia cannot be reliably diagnosed, that brain structure correlates are not used for its diagnosis, and that standard treatment of it has been so ineffective.
Delusions, especially bizarre delusions, are a hallmark symptom of schizophrenia. However, as previously noted, culture and politics dictate a great deal of what is considered to be a bizarre delusion; and studies show that senior psychiatrists cannot reliably distinguish between bizarre and non-bizarre delusions. With respect to hallucinations, the other hallmark symptom of schizophrenia, as previously noted, many individuals hear voices that they are not troubled by, don’t enter medical treatment, and find their voices to be meaningful parts of their lives.
Even if one ignores the problem of validity of the construct of schizophrenia, there is the undeniable scientific problem of the diagnosis of schizophrenia being an unreliable one. Recall that in the DSM-5 field trials, the agreement between raters was established as poor to weak (with the kappa being .46).
Scientifically speaking, it’s the end of the discussion. Without a scientifically valid construct that can be reliably measured, there is no scientific value in looking for brain defect correlates.” [1]
"Who are the witch doctors ? Psychoanalysts and psychiatrists , of course... We live in an unscientific age... Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts." --Richard Feynman [2]
The world is full of average people and stupid people who at mediocre at science and bad at maths -- that includes psychiatrists.
In common with most sensible people, I believe that public funding for higher education in the United States, including student-loan support, should be strictly limited to mathematics and the real sciences—physics, chemistry, biology, and a few borderline areas like linguistics.
If you want to study law, accounting, business, journalism, education, history, classics, English, theology, or anything ending in the word ”studies,” fine: finance it yourself or find private sponsors. College stopped being for smart people 80 years ago; now college is merely high school 2.0.Women have more college degrees than men, now ? Of course, college is now worthless with them taking courses in “14th Century Lesbian Pygmy Sculpture” or “Diversity and Ethno-Centrism Privileged Studies” etc.. So American genetic peasants , who can trace back ancestry, to the genetic scum of Europe, can now use the term ‘schizophrenia’ to denigrate a natural genetic English Norman aristocrat.
The term ‘schizophrenia’ comes from the genetic turnip peasant kraut -- Emil Kraepelin, so it cannot apply to me :

2023.09.30 08:47 lailasage My puppy has me so worn down emotionally and financially

I just adopted a 6 month old ACD mix puppy named Sava. I went through our local animal care and control. I thought I was doing everything the right way. Her medical records seemed up to snuff, she seemed happy and healthy and so so sweet. I was so excited to take her home and start our life together.
It’s a week in and I feel so worn down emotionally and financially. First off, she tore a tendon in her leg going down the porch steps last night. Now she’s walking around with a limp while I scrounge together and GoFundMe the 2k for surgery.
I’ve been home stressing out and trying to sort that all out. I go into the kitchen and notice she had an accident. “No big deal,” I think. I start cleaning it up and that’s when I see them- worms. Literal worms. She has worms.
I have no idea how she got them. She was treated for intestinal parasites while she was at animal care and control, and i’ve had her for almost two weeks and haven’t noticed a single worm until today.
I want to take her to the vet tomorrow because I can’t imagine the discomfort of having literal worms inside your body, but i’m literally financially wiped out. The ER vet visit was $500 alone last night.
I feel like i’m failing her at every turn and I just want her to be safe and healthy and happy. I’ve been bawling my eyes out for an hour just trying to think of what I could possibly do.
I love her so much, and I will get her taken care of. I just feel so hopeless right now.

2023.07.27 04:28 Ok_Status_3169 Question from a Noob

Hello datahoarder,

Long time listener, first time caller. I am very much a novice when it comes to IT work, datahoarding, etc, but I find it interested and have been subbed here for a number of years. I have been very remiss with my data, and I'm ready to take things into my own hands - but I have a few questions.

For a long time now, the bulk of my data has been stored in Amazon Cloud Drive. I know, I know... I joined many year ago when they offered unlimited data for $60/year, and just stuck around as they progressively made the deal worse. I only have about 2tb, but it's all personal data and very important to me. I don't have any physical backups (I know!).

Now, as you're all probably aware, Amazon plans to turn off ACD at the end of the year. I'm using this as an excuse to finally be responsible and build myself a NAS, learn rsync, back things up to google drive, etc etc etc.

However, my problem is that ACD sucks. It sucks really bad, and in particular the desktop app is terrible. Files fail to download, the app crashes all the time, and what is causing these things is not transparent. My plan is to download everything to an external hard drive (or just my NAS if I have the funds to build it before the end of the year), and then also setup a new cloud account with google and do backups to that.

My question is this. How can I ensure data integrity in this very janky process? Amazon's desktop app is not ideal. Downloading to an external hard drive (spinning rust) is not ideal. Should I download twice and like, checksum things? Is there a more robust way to download from ACD which has a way to make sure things are working correctly? As you can tell, I'm a novice - but I would really appreciate any guidance. Thank you.

2023.06.29 22:09 TheMysteriousITGuy Concern about preparation for possible job loss

I am about to turn 57. I live in the northeastern U.S. and dwell in a smallish house with my wife (in her lower 40's and a homemaker) and five crazy, funny, cute cats. My professional work history consists of a good many information technology/help desk positions starting in the later 1990's up through the present day. I have two bachelor's degrees, in political science and business administration, along with some credits for courses at the local community college in the realm of information systems. So I have much experience, but it predominantly is a ground leve/tier 1 forcus.
My present position is that of a help desk agent at an online school that services the entire state; I provide support for internal personnel and have no involvement in the student-/customer-facing contingent. I have been there more than five years now, and there is one other guy that does the same. Between ticket submissions and phone contact via the ACD system, we handle 5-15 cases each per day, 8 hours daily and on a Mon-Fri daylight schedule only. I very much like this job and have aspired to remain there until whenever Lord willing I can retire in a few more years.
Unfortunately, due to some squabbling and rushing ahead in the state legislature, the education committee of one of the chambers therein has hastily presented for a floor vote a proposal that would significantly reduce funding for non-conventional public school systems to where online and other charter schools might be so heavily impacted that they would have to close outright (or reduce their programming and, by extension, the staff employed there). The implications from funding reductions would not necessarily be fully realized until a year from now when the law supposedly would take full effect. It seems to be playing along party lines, with Democrats on the one side and Republicans on the other.
My basic question is as follows: Is it better to see how this might play out politically in the legislature, or is it wise and prudent to pursue other possibilities in the job market now? If, God forbid, the law takes effect as currently produced and both houses ratify it and the governor signs it and the results are as feared, I would want to be ready with minimal delay to recover from the jolt of being laid off permanently. And what might be most helpful in my being able to sell myself strongly based on being not far from 60 at this stage? My wife cannot work a full-time job, but I need to be gainfully employed for at least another 8 years before I can draw regular Social Security (which will not sufficiently cover our costs without other sources anyway). Realistically, the results of such legislation being enacted might take a year or so, but this does not negate my apprehensiveness or anxiety once that day has arrived. I am well-versed and competent w/t Windows 10/11 setup and implementation along with software support and have also done hardware servicing of various kinds of computer systems for many years.
Additionally, what information shall I leave off a current resume/CV in order not to be turned away based on age or other factors that should not have an effect but usually in fact do? And would I make a coverletter brief and largely point the reader to my resume?
Might it also be good to tell some of my friends with potential network connections about my possible predicament and ask them to tell me if they are aware of any good matches?
Thank you for reading this and offering whatever insights you can.
