2024.05.14 11:43 mariposa933 being attracted to one teacher at bible school

i(mid 20s) go to bible lessons since january, and we recently got a new teacher(30s). He's not that attractive facially, but he's tall, and excellent public speaker. I didn't get weird vibes from him at all. my attraction started ever since he said he was our "spiritual father" (idk if it's daddy issues but-). I try to avoid him as much as i can, and once he said "you're not sayign goodbye ?" as i was heading twds the elevator after the class ended. Last time i went to class that was awkward bc i was late and he was waiting by the door with another teacher before the class started, and i wanted to enter the room without greeting him, but he closed the door and didn't want to let me enter the class, and said i was being rude for not greeting the teachers. Then i said i had a bad week, which was true, which sort of pacified him. But it made my attraction worse anytime he gives me a bit of attention. Maybe it's daddy issues, idk. never been attracted to a teacher ever in my life. There's no definite time where i'll stop going to the school either, since anyone who's a student right now can then become one of the teachers too, and start teaching to others who will join the school after. A lot of their colleagues now were their students at the time.

2024.05.14 06:52 Mysterious_Lynx_9300 Life

The flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye we lose the world
And still we return from the void
The experience like a fever of flesh and hair
There's no more past to speak of
There is only now and next
I did all I could to tell the truth
I told every lie on earth
I believed you, every time,
And I thought that all of it
Was in my mind, I didn't
Believe that I would tell myself the truth.
That it could be me to hold and heal you.
I must not be
And it need not be.
Slush or ice or boil or steam
I want to make it as water for us
My heart bursts all on it's own imagination
You don't have to tell me what to do
Or what you want
You don't have to tell me anything
But if I'm still on your mind then tell me
Why do we come back?
I'm chased off, I am little, I am avoidant,
My library contains mostly fiction and paperbacks
It lacks classics and class and god
Thats something you have
It's tired but it's true:
I want what's best for you, even without me
And I never wanted to be without you
But I prefer to see you breathe easy and true
No more broken wings blackbird, be whole
Must I say goodbye? Maybe in french
But I don't know what that really means
A mess of thoughts and papers to slip on
Dork holds all his books to his chest
Like he forgot his bag or
Is in a hurry or
Can't share these poems
How water serenely holds aloft
In a paper lantern above
Never to meet the flame
But in the rippled reflections

2024.05.14 01:42 Spirited-Form-5748 Corroded

A short Zuihitsu poem I strung together for the monthly prompt, "New and Old".
Morning. Monday. The sun peeks between the cracks of my window blinds, spilling out onto my floor. He’s tentative – he’d rather not wake me too strenuously, but I have to get out of bed.
A boy wanders under a freeway – aimless, he is – with his little brown eyes surveying the rubbled ground. It’s dark and noisy and clammy down here, but a flash of silver jumps out to grab ahold of his flashlight and yank him its way.
I haven’t forgotten anything, have I? Keys, coat, wallet; I’m always on a time crunch even when I’m not.
Drive to work: upbeat, perfervid, vivacious.
The fork the boy picks up is antique, ancient, like it’d been dumped straight out of a tear in time into the wrong era. It tries to speak to him and tell him all about its endeavors, but the rust coating it muffles its voice.
I’m wearing a new suit today; I bought it a little while back, although the saleswoman wasn't sure I could afford it. Well, I proved her wrong – and as I traipse into the office with as much vigor as I can muster, I wonder if any of my colleagues will comment on it.
My old suit was tiresome and down-at-the-heels. It pioneered for a great while and served its purpose grand and supplemental – I rescued a dog in it, I was promoted in it, I tore a hole in it.
“I mean, it’s corroded–
No one has a lick to say to me about my new suit, but I linger patiently for it anyway – an offhanded quip or a, “hey, nice suit”. I spend the day waiting for something that doesn’t want to arrive.
Had to get that hole stitched up, by the way. It was a whole lot of trouble. I’d hired this old babushka to do it, but she wouldn’t stop giving me dirty looks, as if I did something to offend her. Maybe I looked at one of her thousand cats the wrong way, or pushed open the door to her abode too loudly.
The boy carries his fork all the way home like a lost kitten. He steals – borrows, more accurately – his parent’s tools so he can polish it up all mutton-fisted. For hours upon end, he scrapes away at the rust, fleck by fleck, until the fork's voice isn’t so stifled.
Drive to home: dreary, tedious, toilworn.
–and what’s so great about a used-up fork, anyway? You might as well throw it away and buy a new one, you know? I wouldn’t go through all that trouble.”
As soon as I’m home, I take off my new suit. I place it in the wash. Run a cycle; squeaky clean. I crawl into bed.
His parents remark about the fork that night when the boy uses it to eat dinner. He should sell it off at a pawnshop, they’d simultaneously said; he’ll fetch a good price for it. He argues otherwise. It’s pretty and besides, finders, keepers!
Anyway, I ended up throwing out that old suit. I grew weary and bored of it.
Morning. Tuesday. The sun bulldozes through the cracks of my window blinds, pouring out onto my floor. He’s unabashed – he wants me to know loud and clear I have to get out of bed and wear my suit again.

2024.05.13 17:23 SwitcherooU Maybe the strangest joke in the entire show?

You’ll find it during the Superfan cut of “Goodbye, Michael.”
Right after he tells the office that Phyllis was hot in high school, Michael turns his attention to Stanley, who seems to be doing a crossword puzzle.
Michael pulls out a slip of patter and reads the following words: “Do you hate that I am proud and brown, standing here alive, with baby oil on my Nubian thighs? - Big Mama Angelou.”
Baffling.
After some googling, he seems to be conflating the poem “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou and “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor (not the first time he’s been mistaken about that song).
Then he wants to do a crossword with Stanley, but Stanley refuses. Then they wrestle over the crossword book, and a hentai illustration falls out.
It’s a very strange sequence. For the first joke to land, the audience would have to be familiar with the Maya Angelou poem and also understand that Michael confuses “I Will Survive” with other pieces of media. So I’m not surprised it was cut.
At any rate, it has to be the strangest joke in the entire show, right? I can’t think of one that’s more obscure.
Anyway, I just wanted to share because I was so blindsided by it. I’ve seen this episode SO many times now, and to have this new bit to talk about is a lot of fun.
Thank you for reading.

2024.05.13 16:43 screwetoro 29F super confused about 29M behaviour. Why do men act intense when they only want something casual?

I went on a date with 29M a few weeks ago. It was a nice cute rom-comesque first date playing mini golf with many out of bound, almost hitting people with balls by me. We went on a walk afterwards and it started pouring down raining. We went and got shelter under some trees in the park and had our first kiss there. He messages me the next day saying that he couldn't stop thinking about me and then we continue to talk every day.
He had planned a trip overseas with friends and was flying out 2 days after we met. He messages me the morning of his trip saying that the worst part of the trip was that he didn't get to see me for 2 weeks. He then video calls every night of his trip to tell me about what he was up to and ask about how I'm going. We had planned to meet up 2 days after he got back.
Last Saturday, while he's still overseas he calls me. I told him a story about how I had a colleague of mine ask me out on a date only to then be very pushy about only wanting something casual. He follows that up by saying that he was sorry and probably should have mentioned this sooner but he was only looking for something casual as well. We then bid each other a fairly neutral goodbye and good luck.
I am just very confused about behaviour like this where people act very intense and noncasual manner but then their intention is the opposite?
Also confused about the popularity of casual relationships these days. It seems that the pool of people looking for a deeper connection is getting smaller and smaller
Tldr: 29M acts in a very intense noncasual manner only to then state that he only had casual intentions

2024.05.13 13:03 Fox_Croissant A shitty rejection experience, did I do something wrong?

Hey guys, I posted on here before seeking motivation to ask out the guy I had absolutely fallen for, who is a colleague of mine. After weeks of doubt, I took a shot and my rejection felt far worse than I could’ve expected. I need some advice on how to deal with it.
The entire situation is in my previous post + two updates. The rejection just happened an hour ago and I feel terrible. I’m still terribly in love with him.
For the people that don’t go back to the old post, here’s a summary without all details:
I liked my colleague for months, we know each other from work conversations that sometimes got a little personal and funny but we never texted much or saw each other outside of work. I wanted more, but my contract was about to end which would result in me never seeing him again. I worked up the courage to ask him out, but I didn’t get a chance to be alone with him. I finally did on my very last day, but due to being unable to handle certain emotions well (underlying problems), I couldn’t ‘speak’ and instead used physical affection. Instead of getting uncomfortable, he accepted it immediately and we held hands for almost the entire day. At some point he told me to chat him to meet up some other time as kissing or anything else at work wouldn’t be professional or allowed. He also hugged me goodbye. I felt so happy that day and texted him right after, apologizing for being so straight up, and he responded asking what was on my mind. I replied right after and got left on delivered for almost a week. I double texted, asking to call him and talk about it. Then he responded, not wanting to call me and straight up rejecting me, seizing further contact.
It was so out of the blue and unexpected and all my happiness is crushed. I need some help analysing the situation and understand if I did something wrong here. Did I miss something? Was he doing me a favor? Why would he basically tell me to text him & meet up, why did he hold my hand..? I keep blaming myself and regretting not just saying what I wanted to say, and now I’ll never see him again. Please help me with this :(

2024.05.13 07:48 Sausage_fingies Space Struck by Paige Lewis

Space struck is a debut collection of poetry from Paige Lewis, and also my first time reading an entire book of poetry.
I just read Space Struck in its entirety one last time, this is my 3rd time. I listened to the audiobook while reading the book in tandem, and omg it was so immersive. I honestly would be content to read this book over and over again for months, it's just so good. And I'm not going to fully "finish" it, Space Struck gives me something I need so dearly and I will revisit many of these poems over and over again until I understand them as I understand my own heart beat. So it's not goodbye, not really. Just time to move on.
This was the first collection of poetry I've ever read and I'm, well, space struck. It was gorgeous. Paige's use of language is just incredible, it's so seemingly simple and minimalistic and yet their imagery is extremely inventive and they manage to say so so much. These poems really really struck my soul. Every one just means so damn much to me, I've let this book become a part of my heart for the past week and I'm so incredibly glad I did.
Another thing that was really cool was the formatting. Most of the poems have a specific shape to each stanza that they adhere to throughout the poem, and I just find that so interesting. It really redirects the flow of the reading, and also gives it such a cool sense of structure.
The heart. The love. The meaning and the depth. Every one of these works I felt so deeply, and I feel like I've come out of reading this book with more of myself than when I went into it. I bathed in Paige's words, I let them infiltrate my mind and unpack their suitcase. Several poems inspired my own work, and the narrative voice really deepened my own, I think.
It's rather crazy just how personal this poetry is to me. I wouldn't feel the same way sharing a paragraph from my favorite book as I do sharing a poem from this. They resonated with me so deeply and changed me and I feel so...not different—I feel so much more. I never knew words could have this much power.
I'm so so happy I read this. It was my first book of poetry, but it will most certainly not be the last I read. Poetry is going to become a part of my life now, I can't believe it hasn't been for so long.

2024.05.13 06:47 za_dorov Have you ever had that feeling that absolutely everything you do and think is pre-digitated? Programmed? I think my friend accidentally found proof.

A few days ago, I received a file from a journalist friend who teaches at a private university in Montevideo. I known this person for years now and the exchange with her on our countless bar nights basically made me want to try to study journalism. After I started my career we became even closer and we shared concerns about the evolution of information, social media and the infamous cerebral callosity we acquired to endure the tragedy.
My friend, let's call her Valeria, was part of a public competition to accompany a minor scientific expedition to the Uruguayan Antarctic base. Her thesis was about investigating how information reception behaves in remote and isolated areas.
I barely read it , but basically tries to show that information circulates and is received in a particular way in these circumstances by a group of unfamiliar people living under extreme climatic and isolation conditions, having as an example, life in submarines and in military bases in Siberia. The Antarctic base gave her the chance to observe some of her postulates up close.
Finally, she was chosen and traveled with this scientific group in a commercial flight Montevideo - Santiago de Chile to later arrive at Punta Arenas and fly to the Antarctic base.
The last communication I had with her before she sent me the almost 90 photographic captures of the Journal, was on March 15, 2024.
We talked over the phone about how the weather was in Montevideo, that it does not stop raining and the cars are practically floating on the streets. She told me that the transport that was going to take them back was having mechanical problems and they would probably have to order spare parts for the plane from Punta Arenas. Then She told me that it is freaking cold down there and his colleagues are all very boring. Nobody has whisky for the evenings. We laughed about that part because I told her to bring at least one bottle of Grappa in her purse.
Before saying goodbye, she told me they had spotted some old metal structures south of the base. The soldiers told her that it was safe to go near that part so she was going to explore them. It wasn't there when they first arrived and that the recent and atypical heat wave probably must have exposed it. I told her to be careful and we said goodbyes.
Three days later I received an email. “Valeria shared a file with you.” As I start to see what it was about she calls me.
“Mauro? MAURO!, can you hear me?” She said in a nervous and excited voice.
“I can barely hear you, what happened?”I asked half asleep, while still lying on my bed.
“Listen to me carefully, don't talk, just listen” I could tell by her agitation that she was walking fast or maybe running. The creaking footsteps in the snow could be heard in the background. in the distance, a catastrophe-type siren was blaring.
“Are you alright? What happened? What's that noise?” I said, now sitting on the edge of my bed.
“I sent you a file. Transfer it to a flash drive, delete history and reset your cell phone, the computer and your email address. I'll explain everything later, it'll be worth it.”
“What? What are you talking about Vale?, what for? Tell me what's going on - I started to yell at her, in slide panic.
“Listen, I found something that is not supposed to exist. In the diary he explains everything. I'm going back to the base, I think someone is following me, I set off an alarm or something. Save that file for me until I get there and remember that... “
There were two loud booms and the sound of water invading the transmission. A choked bubbling and cracking sound reminded me of ice collapsing. My friend had fallen into the water, in Antarctica.
“HEY, are you OK?! What happened?!” - I kept screaming hysterically until the call was cut off.
I looked at my cell phone for a second. My hands were shaking, I tried calling several times but the phone went dead. I looked at the compressed file. I jumped up and ran to the dining room furniture, frantically looking for a white flash drive that had to be in a drawer somewhere. I couldn't find it, so I went back to my desk. I pulled the drawer so hard that it came off the rail and fell to the floor. I started to dig through my belongings on the floor, coins, papers, cards, nothing.
I thought, I struggled to remember where I had fucking put it. Finally I saw my backpack peeking out from behind the desk chair, I jumped on it and in the second small pocket from the inside, there was a cheap white 16G flash drive. I put it in the pc, downloaded the file directly there, took it out and fabric restored the entire system on the computer. I do the same with my cell phone as Valeria said.
At the time I didn't even question if those measures really prevented me from being tracked, and the idea that that was the reason made panic run through my body like lightning. Sitting on the floor of my room next to the mess, my body was numb with tension. After a few seconds, I rebooted my cell phone to try to call Lucia, her sister.
“Hello?”
“Lucia, it's that you? I think something bad happened to Vale, I hear her over the phone as if she fell into the water, and some rumbling. I don't know what I heard, I think she got into some trouble or some place she shouldn't have been - I realized that I was mumble and not saying anything clear. For some reason, I didn't mention the file.
“It can't be Mauro, I just spoke to her on the phone. She was at the airport in Santiago de Chile at the boarding lounge, we talked for about half an hour, she told me she was bringing a fancy bourbon to share and…”
I stopped listening, it didn't make sense, how could it be? what the fuck is going on!
“Mauro, are you ok? Is something wrong? it's too early, are you sure you didn't dream it?”
“Did you talk to her? half an hour ago? But...,” I exclaimed without being able to hide my confusion.
“Are you... sure it was her?”
“Yes, of course you moron, it's my sister! Did you smoke pot again on an empty stomach?”
“No, you're right, nevermind, thanks Lucia, talk to you soon.” I ended the call without letting her say goodbye.
Had I dreamt about it? I erased everything now, how will I know if I dreamt it? I hesitated absurdly.
This is surreal, I thought to myself as I looked at the flash drive in my hand. I refocused my attention and went to the attic looking for my brother's old laptop he left me before going to live in Spain. It was practically useless, but it was enough to see the file. I turned it on, waited for the decrepit Windows XP to load, and put the flashdisk in, opened the compressed folder and found two files.
“LabNotes.pdf”
“PersonalDiary.pdf”
I decided to open the journal first. From what I interpreted from the loading order of the screenshots, after reading it, I opened the image of the last page.
I transcribe as is.
Day 243 of the 2nd mission 10: 40 am. March 12, 2019.
I am the head researcher of the Psychological Area at the UN Antarctic base; I'm currently assigned to Project Sisyphus categorized as the highest classified rank.
This is going to sound crazy, but the person living with my family is my clone.
It still surprises me when I say it out loud, but after being able to replicate the brain-muscular history (a perfect copy of our memory) of any person and having mastered replicating every cell of our bodies at any age, it was only a matter of time before the development of social biotechnology would emerge. Now and by worldwide agreement, as a complete secret.
There is absolutely no shame or a shred of ethics in what we do, there is no longer any constraint on what we can do to the subjects for the sake of research. That haunts me every day.
It all went to shit so fast, I doubt anyone will come to our rescue. The protocol says so, the base in the face of an imminent security risk will erase itself. The structure was designed to collapse methodically following a protocol of incineration and sinking. The immediate perimeter has underwater mines that make the ice collapse almost imperceptibly, but deadly to anyone who tries to leave.
No one can escape from the base, neither the research staff nor the subjects. Our place in the world is already taken.
I only hope that this journal along with my lab notes will be found at some point. I managed to construct a small insulating gasket for it so I trust it will survive in case this part of the building collapses as well.
Please use this data to let the world know what happened here and don't let perversity define us once again.
To my family: I love you and miss you every minute.
B.
At the exact moment I ended the reading I received a video call that made me jump with fright, it is...
Valeria.
With my pulse shaking, I answered the call.
“Hi you! The flight was delayed, can you believe it? This one is absolutely in my top three, worst trips of my life. I'm really hungry and everything is so expensive here. What are you up to? Tell me something, please, I'm soooo bored!”
I looked at her with confusion and I couldn't manage to pronounce words. When I was about to modulate an answer she interrupted me.
“What's the matter Mauro?, are you on pause? Is the signal OK? HELLO! Can you hear me? Can you see me?” She started to walk through the boarding lounge looking for better signal
“Yes yes, Valeria I can hear you.”
She laughed and looked at me with a face between sensual and serious, and continued.
“Do you miss me?” while raising the phone jokingly as she typically does in her selfie pose.
“Valeria, don't you remember calling me earlier today?”
“I? called you? Nop. Why? Ah! By the way, did you know there are penguins in Tierra del Fuego? I would have liked to go and see them.” She continued his verbose conversation in a carefree tone, with her typical hand gestures and playing with his hair.
“Well, at last!” She interrupted herself and shouted, jumping up from her chair.
“We are being called to board, see you in a couple hours!” She said goodbye with a smiling sonority, and began to walk towards the boarding gate.
But at the last second, before ending the call, her gesture changed. She looked directly at the camera with a hardened and emotionless face and almost mechanically, she whispered.
“(I'm going to retrieve that diary).”
My stomach dropped to the floor and I could feel as if my blood was running cold with fear. I could not shake the awful and eerie feeling that this person, who was returning, whom I had never in my life called by her full name, was not my friend.
So, the next couple of hours I put everything in to transcribe the rest of important passages of the diary. Something was compelling me to do it, i can't explain it, Some mix between moral duty, and morbid curiosity. Here is my selection of it.
Lab notes. day 96 of 1st mission 08:00 am December 22, 2016.
Subject JON X012:
First physical assessments: Normal, alert and inquisitive, exhibits some alteration to screens.
We place 100 cc of sedative in room air. The subject attentively follows the narrative of scenario B5 “The last mission”.
The subject responds positively to the premises of the story, where he is asked to address an audience threatened by a natural disaster, convincing them to choose a certain path out of the city.
He offers to collaborate but fails to articulate the message with the power to overcome the simulation.
We resort to pouring 125cc of concentrated Psilocybin into the air as stipulated in the protocol sheet.
The vocal frequency and body language reading receptors in the observation room are activated. The subject manages to formulate a series of premises articulately and with discursive power, circulating around the observation room.
Successful reaction.
We move on to the next stage.
Case is filed under the label “Jobs Project.”
Diary entry: Day 96 of the 1st mission 21:30 pm. December 22, 2016.
Today they transferred subject JON X0012 for psychological evaluation, several in the lab were very anxious about this arrival. I was never the religious type, but I can understand why. Truth be told,
I always imagined Jesus would be taller.
*********
Day 106 of the 1st mission 08:00 am January 02, 2017
Today we received a new lab assistant for the night shift. Much needed as I was covering these shifts myself and am really burned out. The underground operates at full power at those hours, the hum of the machinery becomes unbearable. This must be why the rooms have an insulating structure.
********
Day 112 of the 1st mission 19:00 pm January 08, 2017.
The new integration is not very bright. He labeled the transcripts wrong again yesterday and doesn't seem to fully understand the importance of these. I'm going to have to go through the whole method with him again. I don't have much patience lately, it's not his fault, he seems like a nice guy and it's real that I need a second of confidence. Better train him from now on. Maybe start a sketch of a short explanatory document.
*******
Small introductory guide.
When the subjects conclude the incubation and breeding process (pages 19 to 52 of the manual), that is to say, that they have at least remembered speech and with it, depending on the time in which they lived, reading and writing, they generally begin to perceive themselves. Just before situational curiosity is when the psychology department comes into action. Either to run the “stand by” simulation or the main tests.
In each subject's file is the target of their cloning, the era in which they lived, and the recommended scenarios to trigger the desired response. If the file has X amount on the cover, this corresponds to the generation of the subject, whether it is the first or 10th time it is incubated.
Generally, it takes between 2 and 5 attempts to generate the correct simulation, and administer the appropriate drugs.
It took 5 attempts to come up with the correct amount of methamphetamine that subject AH X005 (Hitler) needed to function in the scenario, as the correct amount bordered on overdose.
Simulations are much easier since the implementation of multisensor AI. We managed to generate almost any scenario including temperature, smells, lights and sounds. We tried not to use familiar ones, as human smells are impossible to replicate. We found this out in a complicated way. We tried to recreate a conversation between RR subject X003 (Reagan) and his mother, but he recognized the fakery by the absence of body odor. His mind collapsed and we had to move him to the Underground. The people in Area C (Private Clients) almost lost a very large Chinese account.
After calibrating the subject, we ran both psychological and behavioral tests, scanned retinas, analyzed blood, as well as vocal and body language. But what has really yielded surprising results are the free interviews. It is amazing what some minds are capable of with the right environmental and chemical stimulation. That's why transcription is vital (!!)
Our area develops BC (Behavioral Algorithms) which are then bought by the private sector, and some government agencies.
To give you some examples: Twitter was an idea of subject JO X008 (Orwell).
Bots in social media and the use of big data was an idea of JG X002 (Goebbels) and KM X014`s worst nightmare (Marx) was bought by Amazon.
It is an arduous process and the success rate is low, but when we achieve the goal per subject, well, these results are a mein part of the latest revolutions of mankind.
So follow the lab rules, never refer to subjects by their actual historical name, and always remember, they are assets, not people.
***********
Day 117 of the 1st mission 16:30 am January 12, 2017.
Today is a rest day all over area D. I miss many things from the old world that I thought I would never miss, taking a bus, standing in line with strangers, and today I miss Sundays. We only have one on the month. So as usual we gather in the rest area to listen to a liberated jukebox that tries to lighten the mood. I know, right? Why I wrote about this “Saturday” photocopy, well besides the same nostalgic drunks, I was approached by a person I didn't recognize.
From what I understood he was a rehabilitated alcoholic, maybe that's why I didn't see him on “Saturdays”. He must be in his 50's, he was portly and wore thick black-rimmed glasses, he seemed to have a slight limp, I noticed it when he went to refill my beer.
I am a very reserved person and find it hard to talk to people. Truth be told, I've lost the desire to talk to people here. What can you actualy fucking talk about here, if it's not about the same thing. Everything revolves around work and some inter-area gossip, which never escalates much.
But yesterday was Clara's birthday and to hide the remorse and sadness of only having shared with her the first 3 years of her life, I had a few too many beers.
We chatted about banal aspects of life in isolation, and the things we miss. For him it was going to the stadium to watch soccer with his grandchildren. I think it was loneliness and nostalgia that brought us together that night.
His name was Sigfried, I don't know if I spelled it right, but it was clearly Nordic, i notice because of some of the words he mixed up with English. He works as the underground level security manager. We all know that it is one of the most restricted areas and what we have learned in these almost 10 years in the project, is that the more restricted, the less questions you should ask.
But that day, I think I felt the urge to hurt myself, to go off the rails, so I asked what we all suspected but no one knew for sure. I asked about the blenders. I wish I hadn't.
************
Day 126 of the 1st mission 08:00 am January 21, 2017.
I almost can't express how furious I am today, but I'm going to try because if I don't, I'm going to punch the new assistant in the face. He has nothing to do with this, he's just mildly irritating.
Anyway, in Genetic Mapping or area A, they approved the incubation of another Anomaly. It seems to be an express request from a major shareholder and there is not much to say. Anomalies are very risky to reproduce, nature is wise, and for some reason it placed them in history moments where they had their limitations.
It seems that after the crisis of 2010 with “The Russian Devil” it is no longer scary enough. New school morons... If they had been there they wouldn't even dare to think about it. I AM FURIOUS.
The arguments are that this case lived longer, that the clone would be in his 70s, and that he possessed noticeably more “civilized” traits. As if the court of the last Zar had not been somewhat civilized.
Personally I think this is a big mistake. Since the discovery that some people possess unknown DNA components and with the 2010 background, they should draw the line. There are certain things, still beyond our ability to understand. But it is delusional of me to think that there are limits, someday the absence of them will consume us all.

Lab notes day 142 of 1st mission 08:00 am February 06, 2017.
Final free interview with JON subject X012
Scenario B-24 or “The Dinner Party” Result: Normal.
Notes: Subject is grateful, positive, docile and hopeful for the future. Offers to cook next time by asking for spices and ingredients of typical Hindu dishes.
The subject is directed to the Underground area.
Attached audio for transcription.
Case is filed under the label “Jobs Project”.

Day 142 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 06, 2017.
Today was the last session with subject JON X012, I managed to extract the last retinal and body language readings, as usual before sending them to Underground level. We ran the dinner scenario, the truth is that is one of the best simulations we have achieved. The subjects are relaxed resulting in the best free interview environment. This one was no exception, I must say I understand the charm of the “messiah” turned out to be quite an entertaining subject. I hope his next generation will be similar.
**********
Day 152 of the 1st mission 19:00 pm February 16, 2017.
I was tasked with the continuous monitoring of subject NT X004. I am not at all happy with this transfer. First of all, I know nothing about area B of engineering and technology. Secondly, I still think this is a really bad idea.
One of the laboratories has been set up with the essential simulation equipment and personnel. Tomorrow we start with the calibration.
**********
Lab notes day 153 of the 1st mission 08:00 am February 17, 2017.
First interview with subject NT X004, we run simulation scenario 54-A, “Signal from another planet.”
Subject is observed to be receptive at first but quickly changes to paranoid. We administer 300cc of MDMA via air, according to protocol.
We introduce the reconstructed figure of a colleague in a cry for help speech.
The Subject laughs and doesn't believe a word, we move to a physical approach plane,
I volunteer myself with a room operator from the engineering area, we show him unfinished plans of an experimental vacuum propulsion engine.
He laughs again and tells us that we are not who we say we are.
We administer 50cc of DMT and move on to the next scenario.
From the screen an astronaut with non-human features sends a distress signal and intergalactic coordinates.
The subject looks thoughtful, reassesses, picks up the blueprints and begins to shout out values and what appears to be mathematical and physical formulas.
Air is charged with percentages of absolute sedation.
Audio recording is attached.
It is filed under the name “Project SpaceX.”
**********
Day 153 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 17, 2017.
I'm not sure what happened today, this is the first time in 10 years that a subject overcame the deception of 3 simulations. We had to place absolute sedation in the air, as risky as we know it is. I recommended that we restart the process from scratch, but it was a resounding no, the client is in a hurry.
I need to get more involved in this case to recalibrate the subject. I don't know if I want to. The words before full sedation still resonate with me. “are you still using DC current? interesting...”
**********
Day 154 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 18, 2017.
Something happened, I don't quite know what. The rooms have an emergency lockdown active. Outside hear security personnel mobilizing. I tried the intercom but it didn't work. The insulation prevents my screams from being heard from the outside. If this goes on another day I'm going to break the lock. I'm going to set my backpack to the bare minimum.
**********
Day 157 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 21, 2017.
Yesterday I heard explosions in the B area. I couldn't take it anymore and broke the lock. Whatever it was I had to go out and see. The corridors were dark, and the underground buzzer went on, at least that worked.
I went right to the north staircase, down the 4 floors in near darkness, the power was failing. The entrance to the underground area was barricaded but I managed to see a figure peeking out from inside as they felt me making noises.
It was Sigfried, he pointed me in the doors direction and I entered through a heavily armored side door. I was surprised by the immensity of this section, it encompassed a large hall below almost all the sectors of the base. In front of us there were 4 large industrial pipes with switches and multiple smaller pipes coming out of their bases. These were repeated like mosaics throughout the area until they disappeared into the distance in the darkness.
Leaning against one of them were 3 officers in formerly white coats and a nearly dead guard bloodied on the floor. Poor guy, his legs were crushed with his flesh in the open. He was lying in a pool of his own blood.
He had a blank stare and was panting, it seemed from the pale of his skin, that his fate was imminent. My asthma began to pound in my chest sharply, so I reached into my bag looking for my inhaler. I told them between visible gasps of bad breath to please tell me what's happened.
One of the doctors had a badge from area B and another from area E which corresponds to bio-armamentistics. The latter burst into tears and said “We deserve it, every one of us, we deserve it”.
I knew the other guy, he is an engineer in area B. I could hear him babbling almost nonsensically about, as why they never thought about it, an issue with electrical power.
He looked at me carefully as if recognizing me and grabbed me tightly by my jacket pulling me close to his face transformed for the panic.
“He let them out, all of them!” but not only that, no no no no... he told them the truth. Nikola fucking Tesla hacked us and told them the truth.”
He began to laugh frantically with a face of absurdity until he burst into a choked cry. At that moment everything went dark. The emergency lights activated, and from far away and getting closer, along with the emergency sirens that began to sound, we heard a large mass of people screaming and running through the corridors outside.
Sigfried looked at me as they started to pound on the shielded door and said.
“We're fucked.”

Day xx of the second mission, month xx of 2017
“()The industrial sounds of spinning blades, the cries for mercy followed by the thunderous, liquid crack, down that big pipe, into the green barrels, with the Monsanto logo, dripped down one side an elongated drop of pink paste ending in the letter E on the chemical label. FERTILIZER.”
**********
After finishing the transcription, my whole body began to want to flee, the walls of my house were tinged with a faint blue light as the cloudy dusk came through the window, the lights turned off by my abstraction at the computer gave way to the dark corridors that began to feel alien. As I gently closed the pc my ears began to ring as if under pressure, my breathing became more present and the vibration of my cell phone interrupted my trance.
A call from the office. It was to tell me that I had a vacation week pending, that by schedule, I had to take it starting today.
Sons of bitches, now they even choose your time off - I thought at first, but at the same time I found the voice on the phone very strange, and to tell the truth, the procedure itself.
The anger turned into confusion that only added to the paranoia. The sounds in the street began to seem erratic, a chaotic and strangely familiar feeling came over me. My senses seemed increasingly acute, and they screamed:
Go away.
I grabbed the old laptop, the flash drive and headed for the bus station. The short trip from my house seemed like a long journey. People on the street looked at me with strange faces, the cell phone kept ringing with unknown numbers on the screen and a strange idea began to formulate in my head that whispered “Them, Valeria is one of Them”.
Already on the platforms I rummaged through my backpack where I confirmed that I had the key to the family beach house in San Luis, 60 km to the east of Montevideo. I turned off my cell phone, got on a bus heading to another and much far away town called Treinta y Tres. Sat near the last seat and slipped my cell phone in my front pocket of the seat in front of me, got off and commented to the driver with a clueless face, “I got confused, I'm going to the coast”.
I almost jumped onto the steps of the correct bus to where I was heading, unable to avoid the gazes of the passengers questioning me for the last minute drop in. I sat in my numbered seat and defragmented in dissociation, trying to understand what I was doing, I was running away, but from what?
The images of the last transcriptions were engraved in my mind, the last paragraph was repeated over and over again making me shake my head from time to time trying to get them away from my thoughts. The road was dark and I lost track of time, the digital clock within sight of the passengers jingling since we left, reading 10:40.
“San Luis Station!” - I heard the guard's shout in low volume.
I staggered to my feet, hurried to get off and with the same impulse I entered the dirt roads.
I zig-zagged through the dark, cold and silent beach town. The moonless night and the smell of the sea calmed me.
When I turned the corner to the gabled beach house of my family, on the steps of the front door lit by a white light, was her. Sitting, waiting for me. I stopped dead in my tracks and a chilling vertigo ran down my torso to my throat. We looked at each other for a short two seconds, until she stopped and started walking in sliding steps towards me, smiling and playing with her hands, crossing and uncrossing her arms. The growing sound of the wind through the trees covered us.
“Darling, how are you? How nice is the summer house, I don't think we ever came here, did we? Is it the one your grandmother left you?”
I felt the adrenaline rushing through my bloodstream, how could such a familiar attitude from such a familiar person transmit such panic to me? I had to answer something.
“Yes, this is it. I came to clear my head for a while, they gave me a few days at work and I wanted to take advantage of it.” I tried to excuse myself with failed dissimulation, since I stuttered in the middle of the words.
“Yes, I know! We arranged it with them, so you can be more relaxed and as a gesture for taking care of the file. Ah! and another thing. I think someone stole your cell phone at the bus station.” She looked at me with a smart-ass smile.
“Anyway, don't worry, they already found it on a bus on the way to “Treinta y tres”. You can get it back later.”
At this point I opened my mouth to ask for explanations, but as terrified as I was I only mumbled a “thank you”.
All this dialogue let us half a body length away, Valeria looked at me now a little more serious and stood at my side. She took my arm petrified and I could feel how a strong smell of neutral soap invaded me, as if she had rubbed herself in it too much.
“Shall we go inside? it's getting cold,” She said, finishing the sentence with a sweet gesture of pleading.
“Emm, shure.” I said.
My trembling hands managed to hit the lock on the 3rd attempt, we entered, turned on the lights and from his backpack she took out a red wine. Our favorite.
“Bring me some glasses, Mauro”. - She said to me as she sat down on the armchair against the window overlooking the gentle hills outside.
She poured wine until he almost filled the ex-cottage cheese glass, looked at me and in a toast gesture said.
“To... Dr. B?”
I slid a little smile and raised my eyebrows. Then I took half a glass in one sip.
“Well!” - She exclaimed, leaning over and resting the glass on the coffee table, and continued.
"You must be very confused, I understand, I saw it many times, the mind trying to adapt to a new, unsuspected reality and in your case all at once. It is not easy. First, make sure that no one is going to hurt you or anyone you know, second, what you read in that file, as you may have noticed, is not intended for public knowledge. Also to tell you”. I couldn't take the stress anymore, I exploded.
“You're not Vale. Who are you?! You're almost identical, but....”
“Ah yes, that one it's a tricky one to explain. Let's try, let's see:
“I'm a version of Valeria that she accidentally gendered when entered the lab. In one of the incubation rooms she touched a scan button that photographs her mind for 48 hours. It contains a micro needle that took her blood and thus generated me.”
“The thing is that we were in a situation of self-destruction of the systems, and that part of the programming code of the protocol was also copied in Valeria's mind.”
“And Valeria? She 's... dead?”
“Well, yes and no. If she tried to leave the base she's probably dead. if she's still there, she's probably frozen to death or killed by the cleanup command, but basically, if I'm here, she's not anymore.”
the coldness with which she answered me made me lose the little calm I had, I got up from the armchair and started to back away with my hands on my head, I couldn't stop repeating,
“this can't be happening, this can't be happening”.
“Hey! Mauro, calm down, it's going to be alright. I'm Valeria too. In every way, I'm still your friend, I know who you are and everything we went through, really, it's me, and when I finish managing the leak, the code, it won't work anymore, it will be erased from my mind and I'll be me. So don't worry. You only have to give me the flash disc and this issue ends here. We go back to normal life and nobody will know about anything.
“I'm not going to pretend that my friend didn't die! Alone, fucking freezing to death, I'm not going to let you take her place, I'm not going to let you!” - She interrupted me.
“Mauro, listen to me” - She came closer to me and grabbed my hands, her big, lined eyes looking at me with sweetness, like so many times before.
“I AM Valeria, I have the same fingerprints, the same blood, the same DNA, the same memories, the same scars, absolutely everything. Are you going to tell my mother that I died? to my sister? Are you going to report me? Nobody is going to believe you at all. If anyone even wants to believe you, how would you prove it? I am an exact copy”. - she told me, smiling with real sweetness and empathy.
I could only cry, for my friend, for the helplessness of the conclusion that she was right. I collapsed on the couch, and watched as the hills swayed in the night.
“Let's have the last glass and I'm leaving.”- she said to me.
“After I give you this, and that part of you disappears, will you remember that you are not... really Valeria?
“No, there is already a simulation on pause about Valeria's last week, she won't remember anything about this situation when she wakes up, because the memory is simply overwritten.”
“So I'm going to be the only one to know about this?”
“Take it as a gift Mauro, a glimpse behind the veil. And if you keep it that way, everything will be fine” - The threatening tone was soft but evident.
“Okay, hand me your PC and the flash drive.”
I looked at her evaluating all possible actions and if this decision was the right one, she stretched out her hand and smiled sympathetically. I gave her the old computer and the black 16G flash drive with the file. She inserted it, typed mechanically fast until the screen went black.
“Perfect, That would be all - She took out the flash drive, threw it on the floor and stepped on it violently with the heel of her shoe, put on his backpack and headed for the door.
“Stop,” I said.
“The things that Dr. B wrote... about the underground…
“Yes, they are true, it was the only way to be self-sustainable and to be able to isolate the complex from the rest of the world. Even the most morally flexible scientists would question the work if they knew where the subjects ended up, and what we were doing with their bodies... Anyway, I'm going home, Lucia called me 5 times already. Talk to you tomorrow.
“Love you,.” - She smiled at me and closed the door behind her. I felt a car slowly drive away from the house.
From my pocket I took out the white flash drive and looked at it. Now I had a decision to make.

2024.05.12 21:32 Pale_Rate4799 I struggle so badly with processing multiple layers of information at once and competing demands for my attention. Does anyone else?

For context, I was diagnosed with ADD at 15. I am now 29. Ever since I was a child, I've struggled to process multiple different informational pathways at once. For example, if the teacher was explaining something to the class, I couldn't simultanously process the kid sitting next to me chatting away. Trying to listen to both at once makes me feel like my brain is being split into two, to the point where it gives me a physically uncomfortable sensation. This continued into adulthood. Here is another example: In the breakroom at work, I'll be focusing on heating up my cofee, when Colleague #1 will come in and strike up conversation, then Colleague #2 will enter and start interjecting about an upcoming report we're working on. I cannot distil everything that's being said at once and feel overstimulated when I try to. I've tried to communicate this to family, friends, my partner, and colleagues. Some people are more receptive and mindful than others.
I've gotten frustrated with my family and partner because they forget I struggle with this and will overload me with multiple layers of conversation, inquiries, and demands for my attention at once. They don't mean to, but it certainly worsens when I'm around family. I try to put a stop to it by very clearly saying things like, "I'm talking to so-and-so right now. When I finish talking to them, I'll get back to you." or "One moment please, I need to (INSERT TASK)". But, especially as my parents get older, it seems like they have more and more difficulty remembering this. It also doesn't help that my larger family has an overlapping conversational style, where the norm is for people to interject while others are still talking.
I've always felt like it was related to my ADD but when I brought it up with therapists, I felt like they couldn't fully understand how deeply it impacts me. When I've discussed this with others with ADHD/ADD, they'll often tell me how they struggle with interupting, but not with recovering from interuptions themselves.
For Easter, my cousin booked brunch reservations for our extended family. Multiple tables were reserved for us, and my parents were split between two tables. My aunt was also there. My mom, aunt, and dad all had strong opinions on where I should sit. From the moment I walked in the door, I was bombarded by suggestions/directives on where I should sit. I couldn't even put my coat down without someone else interrupting and telling me to sit elsewhere. I felt like a ping pong ball, bouncing off of different tables until I firmly said "I can't be 3 places at once. Someone is going to be disappointed regardless." I finally sat down, but in those moments, I become so discombulated it takes me a couple of minutes to regain my train of thought. Then, it takes me even longer before I feel like I can re-engage with conversation or whatever other activity is taking place. It exhausts me.
My brain literally hits a wall at a certain point and cannot process anything else. I practically start disassociating. I essentially have to remove myself from the scenario to get my head on straight again.
I think my dad could pick up that I was overwhelmed because a few days later, he called and said "I'm sorry that so many people were grabbing your attention at once, but we were just so excited to see you! You've been so busy with work, and it's been awhile!" Even though the situation did overwhelm me, I didn't feel right doubling down in that moment and explaining just how disruptive it is & uncomfortable it was for me because he already felt bad and I've tried to explain this in other, similar scenarios already.
Yesterday, I visited my parents again for Mother's Day. My cousin was also visiting and as soon as we got out of the car, he came over to us and began launching into a story about drama with his ex-roommate. I didn't even get the chance to take my bags out of the car before he started talking. I managed to remove myself from him and get inside. Shortly after, I was helping my dad set up an online account to pay bills. Due to an annoying technical hangup, I needed more than one electronic gadget to do it: I was working off both my partners' phone and my own phone to set up the account. My mom and aunt were in the room as well. I finish setting up the account but I am also doing mental math in my head to make sure I calculated all the bills properly. My mom and aunt are chatting with my partner, so I'm also trying to keep up with that conversation. I try to hand back my partner's phone, but accidentally pass him mine.
"That's not my phone," he says, pushing it back. I don't initially take in what he's said, because I'm still calculating bills in my head.
"That's not my phone." he says again, pushing it back towards me. My mom and aunt are still chattering.
"That's not my phone," he said a third time. At that point, my mom asks me another question. I try to respond, but nothing is coming out but stuttering. I feel like my brain is breaking.
"Oh, sorry" I say, managing to wrench my mind away from my mental bill calculation, give him the right phone, and mutter something in response to my mom's question. My mom and aunt BURST out laughing at me giving him the wrong phone, like it's the funniest thing ever. I excuse myself from the room. I just need a break from the cacophony.
My partner can tell something is wrong and follows me outside. I explain that I'm having trouble allocating my attention to all the people tasks that need it, and that it's really wearing on me. We talk it out and I decide to cut the trip to visit my parents short and come home early.
The next morning, my partner and I are grocery shopping and my dad calls again. I tell him I'm grocery shopping. That doesn't stop my dad, he starts talking about how he saw my partner and I talking in the backyard and is worried someone in the family said something to offend me and cause me to go home early. I'm in the middle of grocery shopping and don't have time to unpackage all this right now. I make some evasive comment about how I was just frustrated over forgetting to lock the door back at home.
Meanwhile, I have a carton on strawberries in my hand. I go to put in the cart when my partner comes up to me and says, "I already got strawberries."
I didn't hear him, because I was trying to wrap up the call with my dad.
"I already got strawberries," he repeats himself. I don't respond right away because I'm trying to process what he just said and say goodbye to my dad.
"I already got strawberries," he said a third time.
"I'm on the phone," I mouth and gesture towards him. At this point, I'm annoyed. Why can't he take a moment to see beyond the need to correct me about the strawberries, and realize I am tied up on the phone and struggling to manage both tasks?
I cannot manage talking to my dad and grocery shopping at once, so I leave. I wrap up my conversation with my dad. I text my partner that, as we discussed yesterday, I have trouble processing multiple sources of information at once and I am frustrated that we literally just discussed this yesterday, and yet here I am having a similar experience today. Again, I'm left super discombulated and overstimulated. We live in a major city with public transit. My partner drove us to get groceries in our car. I text my partner that I'm going to head back seperately on the train because I know going back into the grocery store will overstimulate me again. I turn off my phone take the train home. I just need space.
My dad knew I was grocery shopping but continued the conversation instead of calling me later . My partner claimed he didn't see I was on the phone, but if he had taken one more second to be slightly more observant, he would have seen that I was literally talking to my dad as he approached me. My phone was held to my ear, I don't know how he missed it.
I feel like I'm surrounded by pushy people. I do not want to have another conversation with my parents about this. Before, I've brought up to my parents how difficult it is for me to manage multiple, competing interuptions and recover my train of thought. I've talked about how overwhelming it feels to me. Their response was, "Well we're getting older so when something comes to mind we have to say it otherwise we'll forget it."
My partner seems empathetic and receptive sometimes but then other times he contributes to the problem. Despite multiple conversations, I feel like he struggles with self awareness about it too. This feeling of discombulation I feel around others is impacting my relationships. Now I autmoatically associate the overstimulation with family visits as well as certain interactions with my partner. I've started limiting visits with family. I've noticed I've started to hole away in other parts of the apartment if I need to complete a task because I've learned there's a pretty good chance I'll be interrupted if I don't.
I feel smothered and I don't know what to do. Why do these moments impact me so much? I literally feel like I can't regain my train of thought. Does anyone else feel hypersensitive in these moments?

2024.05.11 22:32 za_dorov Have you ever had that feeling that absolutely everything you do and think is pre-digitated?

I'm not going to lie to you, a few times we shared the bed. But in general we are very good friends. I'm venting this last part, because I want you to understand that I trust this person blindly and she trusts me. Especially considering that she decided to send me a piece of information so bizarre and disturbing that making it public could have consequences that I can't even imagine.
My friend, let's call her Valeria, was part of a public competition to accompany a minor scientific expedition to the Uruguayan Antarctic base. Her thesis was about investigating how information reception behaves in remote and isolated areas. I read it at the top, but basically tries to show that information circulates and is received in a particular way in these circumstances by a group of unfamiliar people living under extreme climatic and isolation conditions. Having as an example, life in submarines and in military bases in Siberia. The Antarctic base gave her the chance to observe some of her postulates up close.
Finally, she was chosen and traveled with this scientific group in a commercial flight Montevideo - Santiago de Chile to later arrive at Punta Arenas and fly to the Antarctic base.
The last communication I had with her before she sent me the almost 90 photographic captures of the diary, was on March 15, 2024.
The soldiers tell her that in was safe to go near that part so she was going to explore them.
I don't know what I heard, I think she got into some trouble or some place she shouldn't have been." I realized that I was mumble and not saying anything clear.
Had I dreamt it? I erased everything now, how will I know if I dreamt it? I hesitated absurdly.
This is surreal, I thought to myself as I looked at the flash drive in my hand. I refocused my attention and went to the attic looking for my brother's old laptop he left me before going to live in Spain. It was practically useless, but it was enough to see the file. I turned it on, waited for the decrepit Windows XP to load, and put the flashdisk in, opened the compressed folder and found two files.
“LabNotes.pdf”
“PersonalDiary.pdf”
I decided to open the Diary first.

2024.05.11 18:52 Kirkd002 Poem for loss

I had to say goodbye to my beautiful German Shepherd who I have only had for 6 years a few weeks ago due to cancer. My friend wrote me this poem and I thought it was sweet so I wanted to share. :)
"In the gentle cradle of your arms I rest, Beneath the whispered wind, in soft sunset glow, We know a bond that time can't test, Because over the minutes, hours, days, and years, our love did flow.
Your eyes now are a well of tears unshed and deep, This pain is the weight of love, the weight of care, For me, I dream of sleep, And in my silent aches, you've always been there.
Now, my steps grow slow and my eyes grow dim, You hold my paw and whisper, "Don't be afraid. I love you so much. It's time." A gentle nod, a choice that isn't mine Is but a final act of love, true and sublime.
Don't grieve too long, I have know your heart, In every snoot booped, every ear rubbed, you've played your part. My tail wags slow, my trust in you complete, In these last beats, it is our love that makes me replete.
So when I drift beyond, carry our love, And feel me, in the stars above. Because it was your hardest choice that was kindness true, So I send from me, a gift of peace, returned to you".

2024.05.11 09:24 tombot96 Daily rant!

I know many must have gone through this and still might be going through this situation.
I'm 29M someone who is unable to make contact with women or make friends online. In real life I don't have any female friends I don't consider female colleagues as my friends as we have limited talks only in working hours after that we don't bother about each other lives, I had used many social media platforms but all have been nothing but a disappointment. Even on this sub reddit or any other subreddit in general, people talk sometime and they just ghost u or don't bother to reply you anytime soon!
This only makes us feel pathetic to the point I've lost all my confidence that I will ever make friends and maintain relationships with people overtime it makes me wanna stay away from people as I know that after sometime I'm gonna end up alone.
I thought reddit very different from other platforms as it's more like a community than a social media where people flex only good things so thought I might be able to make friends here. Again all I saw was disappointment hitting hard on my face!
So finally I came to a conclusion that social media isn't my thing will delete this account a couple of days!!!
I had been a part of this subreddit Earlier, to anyone I must've hurted anyone From this subreddit I apologise you for being that way but since this is the last post I'm assured that you will never be troubled by me as I'm leaving this platform too. One thing I can say I have started to accept the loneliness as a fact and acknowledge it so will try to stay alone most of the times as that's what auditing is all about!

2024.05.11 02:56 PhilMathers Sophie V - FInal Days

10,000 Stolen Days

May 10, 2024 marked exactly 10,000 days since Sophie’s life was taken. 10,000 days which had they not been stolen from her in December 1996, must have seemed to be filled with possibility .1996 had been a banner year, she had achieved so much in the previous 6 months, setting up her production company "Les Champs Blancs", and producing three different productions, with more on the way. But it had been exhausting few months with all this work and travel, and although Christmas is a holiday, it is not always a relaxing one.
Christmas had often been a difficult time for Sophie. She walked out her first husband Pierre Jean at Christmas 1981, so suddenly, she left her infant son behind and had to steal him back with a ruse involving a relative. She broke up with Bruno Carbonnet over Christmas in 1993. leaving him a puzzling note;
“Je suis partie là où tu n'a jamais été, là où tu n'iras jamais".
“I have left there where you have never been, there where you will never go”. This didn’t make much sense to Bruno. He waited alone for two weeks in the apartment hoping she would return, he a had bought a bicycle for Pierre Louis for Christmas. In January he left to teach in Le Harve and when he returned the locks had been changed and all his stuff was on the landing. Sophie was deliberate about change in her life she didn't just let things happen to her. Her agenda year planners reflect this. She was meticulous in recording meetings, calls, contact details and travel plans. She brought 1995, 1996 & 1997 year planners with her. There are notes and reminders stretching into February 1997. She even tore off the little perforated corners as each week passed. It's a poignant reminder of how abruptly her life was cut off in full flow - the week beginning 23/12/1996 still has its corner intact.
Sophie’s style was austere, almost minimalist. Her cottage was painted white inside and out, with a except for the ground floor, which was black slate with a shiny varnish. The only decorations were a few sprigs of holly placed by the housekeeper to welcome her. A traditional Christmas week filled with loud music, tinsel and overconsumption was the diametric opposite of her character.
Worse there is the prospect having to trade pleasantries with tiresome relatives.
That Christmas Daniel had decided for the first time to have a big family Christmas inviting his extended aristocratic family to his chateau in Ambax in the South of France. For Sophie, who even after six years of marriage barely knew Daniel’s relatives, this was an easy choice and a hard no.
She bought her ticket on the morning of her travel planning to spend nearly a week in Ireland including Christmas Day and return on the 26th. It may be that this was the only return flight she could get at the time. Or it may be, as she told her aunt Madame Opalka “she was going to go to Ireland to spend Christmas there, because the house in Ambax was full of people”. From what Daniel has said, and from what others have said, it may be he tried to persuade her to come to Ambax for Christmas and convinced her. Sometime during the weekend she got an itinerary by fax at the cottage confirming her flight back on the 24th. But even on Sunday afternoon she told friends she had not made up her mind which flight she would take.
It is difficult to say how well their marriage was going at that time because the reports vary. Daniel said it was "harmonius and peaceful" which was far from accurate. There are several biographies of Daniel Toscan du Plantier, and they paint a vivid picture of a man who though incomparably charming, lived his life his own way without much concern for his family. He married four times and in three cases his wives were already pregnant before they got married. When he married Sophie, his eldest son and daughter were not even told about it, they only found out later in the summer when Sophie turned up at events.
Some witnesses including Daniel said was it was the happiest period, others say she was basically “an official wife” and that “their open marriage was an open secret”. The truth was probably somewhere in between. She had visited Ambax in November and collaborated closely on the documentary Europa 101 with Daniel. Whatever their personal arrangement, Daniel was deeply affected by her death, even though he refused to come to Ireland. His daughter Ariane wrote how she spent months taking care of him, feeding him sedatives and sleeping pills. He was clearly overwhelmed, so Sophie must have been more than an "official wife" to him. Was their marriage "open"? They clearly had a high degree of independence from each and had affairs in the past.
Nevertheless, Sophie may have balked at spending Christmas in Ambax. For one thing, it was far away from Paris, where her friends and family lived. For another, Daniel’s family and entourage knew very little about her. Apart from his second son Carlo, who was friends with her son Pierre Louis and some servants, she would have been on her own. Christmas in Paris would have been tolerable, she could escape and visit her parents and friends whenever she wanted, but in Ambax, she would be cooped up with nowhere else to go.
There is a question of whether Daniel was having an affair at the time. According to a Garda memo, French journalist Caroline Mangez said that Daniel was with a female film producer. However the files are full of unsubstantiated rumours and lies. Even if he wasn’t having an affair Sophie may have suspected he was. If Daniel had invited a mistress, or even a former mistress, or a former wife to Ambax, it would be unbearably awkward for Sophie. Daniel had uncountable affairs, and many of his mistresses knew each other, some remained on good terms.
Daniel may have been faithful at that time, perhaps he was telling the truth when he said their marriage was harmonius, but in any case Sophie had other reasons to skip Christmas. She had wanted to come to Dunmanus for months, but work got in the way. The heating had just been fixed and she needed to pay the plumber and her housekeeper. They preferred cash.
And if Daniel was unhappy that she wasn’t going to be there for Christmas, they were going on holiday together in the New Year to Dakar, Senegal. It would be much easier for Sophie to be with Daniel by himself than his whole family. This trip to Ireland would be a breather for her. She didn’t want to be alone, she asked at least 8 different people to accompany her, including 2 former intimate partners, though there is no evidence that she was having an affair or intended to have an affair.
There is a post-it note with a message in Sophie's hand seemingly inviting someone to spend Christmas: "Je vous laisse le choix : venir ou de refuser histoire que vous passiez un bon noel"
"I leave you the choice: come or refuse just so you have a good Christmas"
Whoever that note was written to, it was to someone she addressed as "vous" so not one of her closest friends or family.

Work

If she had another relationship, it is not obvious from her diary and it was unknown to her friends. What her diary does show though is that she had thrown herself into work.
Apart from her agenda she kept a working notebook, a red hardback book which is filled with a tantalizing mash of different references to famous works of art, music, and contacts details of artists and philosophers. She had recently completed work on three different films. The first work was a documentary on African Art. The next was Europa 101, a documentary written by Daniel showcasing the wealth of European cinema. This was Daniel’s pet project, he loathed US cinema and the dominance of Hollywood. He once likened his wife’s death to a “bad movie”. His life’s work was a “struggle against cheap portrayals of violence, which is what leads to deaths like this” (Irish Independent 12/07/1998). This project involved gathering interviews and footage from dozens of famous directors and actors, including John Malkovich, Ingmar Berman, Pedro Almodovar, Werner Herzog, Nanni Moretti, Jean Luc Godard and many others. It was broadcast on December 8, 1996.
The third was an art house movie called “He sees folds everywhere”, a concept movie exploring the idea of folds and creases in everyday life, in hanging clothes, paper, wrinkles on skin, folds of a human brain. This was a project of the director Guy Girard, and it was the work to complete this that delayed her trip to Ireland. But she had other projects in train in her notebook. She was researching Greek folk music, Rebetiko. She had a project or projects in mind which were somewhat dark in nature.
She was in contact with George Didi-Huberman who had written a book called “The Invention of Hysteria”. This is a photographic history of how Jean Marie Charcot – one of the giants of 19c French science – locked up thousands of women for the imagined maladies of hysteria, lethargy, catalepsie and experimented on them, deliberately photographing them in contrived and frightening poses. It is a very weird and frightening history.
Her next project seems to have been based around human fluids. Her final notes are filled with references to human flesh, death and the four medieval humours of blood, phlegm, black bile, yellow bile. There are extensive notes to what seems to be a lecture given by linguist Jean Claude Milner on the subject of melancholia. Note that “melancholia” is a synonym for “black bile”, one of the four humours.
She was researching the avant garde Irish/British painter Francis Bacon, who was known for producing uniquely disturbing images. She references “Three Studies for the Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion”. There was a Bacon exhibition in Centre Pompidou in 1996 and Sophie must have attended it. Her notebook contains her jottings from a lecture on Bacon by writer Philippe Sollers which seemed focused on blood.
"Why does painting touch the central nervous system?" "We are carcasses of meat, meat above all" "The canvas bleeds, blood spurts red" "Dostoyevsky had a crisis in front of the 16th century Hans Holbein’s painting “The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb She jotted down a quote from the play Libation Bearers from Aeschylus:
Orestes sees the Furies coming and exclaims "O Lord Apollon look! Now they come in troops, and from their eyes they drip loathsome blood!"
The last entry reads "research the Furies"

Friday

Having failed to convince anyone to join her in Ireland for Christmas, she went alone. She telephoned Josephine on Tuesday 17th, told her she would be arriving alone on Friday. She called her again on Thursday to ask her to make sure the house would be warm.
She went to the airport on Friday morning, bought a ticket with the return date on the 26th, carrying with her a rather hefty bag filled with clothes, including some eveningwear. Perhaps she envisaged visiting people at Christmas time. She expected to stay nearly a week. Later, possibly on Sunday she changed her ticket, she called the Aer Lingus ticket desk in Charles de Gaulle airport, Paris and got a return flight for the 24th. She received the itinerary details by fax, as she had a machine in the cottage.
She was not in a good mood when she arrived. She had some words with the woman at the Avis counter who passed her to her colleague. The photos on CCTV show a woman looking tired and drawn, something which was remarked upon by the Avis rep, who estimated she was in her forties, a little older than her 38 years. But nobody looks their best walking off an aircraft. She had also attended the Unifrance Christmas party the night before. This was a lavish party held in “Les Bains Douche”, a unique Paris nightclub combined with a swimming pool. Apart from the late night, the social effort must have been tiring. There was a rumour that Sophie had a row that night at Les Bains, a row with one of Daniel’s mistresses, but I have never heard that confirmed. But other reports say that those who met her there found her "radiant", "in good form", "playful". "She went arm in arm to see friends," one guest at the party told Paris Match, "but she always came back to the table where Daniel was sitting." (Paris Match 09/01/1997) Daniel was quoted years later by Michael Sheridan - “She spent some hours having an intense, passionate conversation with a film-maker” - Alain Terzian, producer of Les Visiteurs, one of the most successful French comedies of the 1990s.
Strangely though, Daniel’s first statement said she left on Wednesday. So perhaps it didn’t register with him that she was at the Unifrance party with him on Thursday 19th, or perhaps he had forgotten the party altogether.
Sophie was captured on Cork Airport CCTV at 14:41 pushing a trolley through the arrivals gate. The scheduled arrival time was 13:20, but because of almost an hour’s delay in departure it didn’t touch down until after 2. It would have taken about 15 minutes to pick up baggage from the carousel.
Cork is a small airport and it is quick to get through the arrival hall to the car hire desks, only a matter of a few meters away.
Sophie hired a silver Ford Fiesta and would have been on the road by 14:50.
The quickest route to West Cork would have been via Bandon and Dunmanway but it is more likely she went via Clonakilty and Skibbereen. She stopped in Ballydehob to buy kindling. She may have stopped in Skibbereen to buy petrol. A pump attendant reported seeing a woman matching her description driving a silver Ford buying petrol. He also noted a tall male companion in the passenger seat. The Gardai discounted this sighting because they accounted for the petrol in the car when it was hired and the mileage thereafter. There were also some discrepancies in the vehicle’s appearance and its description in the statement. Also the Ballydehob sighting is more reliable as the woman got a chance to talk to her. It would seem odd to stop in both Skibbereen and Ballydehob, both petrol stations.
But she seems to have stopped again in Schull because she bought bread and cheese in the Courtyard Deli, and this was most likely on Friday. She talked with the proprietor, Denis Quinlan to ask if there would be live music. At this stage it would have been around 4:30pm and after this she went to the cottage. She called her caretaker Josephine at 5:15, so she must have been at home by then. We don’t know if she went out after that point. She may have stayed in. At 10:15 she called her friend Agnès Thomas and spoke to her for half an hour.

Saturday

Sophie’s whereabouts on Saturday morning are unknown. Perhaps she stayed in, perhaps she went out. Finbarr Hellen was working on his land nearby and saw her car outside the house 12 to 1pm. He didn’t see her and thought it was unusual for her not to come out and say hello. He also remarked her car was parked in an unusual place. He did not elaborate more than this.
The next event we know is that she bought some groceries in Brosnans supermarket on the main street in Schull and took £200 out of the ATM.
For the curious, her shopping list is listed below:
Item Price
Firelighters 0.85
Independent Newspaper 0.85
EP Televised "Chopped" & Her 0.52
Parsley 0.40
Low Fat Yoghurt 1.90
Ballygowan Natural Spring Water 0.85
Napolina Penne 0.75
Rashers 1.26
Courgettes 1.23

Monini Olive Oil 3.45
Ballygowan Natural Spring Water 0.85
Avonmore Carrot & Coriander Soup 0.99
Ballygowan Natural Spring Water 0.85
22.18
This list does suggest she was buying just for herself, but also that she planned to cook moderately elaborate meals with parsley, courgettes and chicory. Together with the cheese, bread and fruit already in the house she had enough food on there to last a few days. This quantity of food suggests she had not decided to travel home on the 24th at this stage.
The till recorded a time of 2:49pm.
Sometime after this or perhaps before Sophie entered Tara Fashions, the clothes shop run by Marie Farrell. What Marie Farrell saw that day and subsequent days has been subject to revision, retraction and details seemed to be added with each telling. But I think the most reliable report is the first and all the subsequent revisions cannot be trusted. Farrell called the Gardai on the 25th but they didn’t get around to taking a statement from her until 27th. Even so we can assume her memory was fresh. Here is her statement, verbatim.,
On Saturday the 21st December 1996 I was working in my shop at Main Street, Schull, Co. Cork. Between 2p.m. and 3p.m. I noticed a weird looking character across the road from my shop. He was approx 5’10” in height, late 30’s, scruffy looking, long black coat, flat black beret, thin build, sallow skin, short hair. He was there for about 10 minutes. On Sunday morning at 7.15a.m. approximately I noticed the same man on the road at Airhill. When I saw him he was walking towards Goleen on the right hand side of the road and I was travelling in the opposite direction. When he saw me he stopped and put up his hand to thumb a lift. I did not see this man before or since. On Saturday the 21.12.1996 at approx 3p.m. there was a woman in my shop. She did not buy anything. I now know that this woman was the deceased woman from Goleen. I recognised her from the photograph on the television.
There is also a record of her questionnaire which may have been taken earlier than this statement.
In reply to question no 8 When/where did you last see him/her alive? She replied "saw her in shop. She bought a "Carrig Donn" aran sweater aran nap coloured, rolled neck late Sat aftemoon. Paid £39.00. Questions No. 9, 10, 11 & 12 were left blank. In reply to question No. 13 "any other help?" Marie Farrell replied "saw a man on Sat afternoon hanging around street. Desc late 30's, 5'10" very short hair wearing black beret. Saw him again Sun morning @ 7.20am walking towards Airhill but thumbed her.
In a later questionnaire, Farrell said the sweater was too big and she didn’t buy it.
What is interesting her is that Farrell does not draw any explicit linkage between the weird character in the long black coat and the woman in the shop. They were just there at approximately the same time. Farrell did say in later statements that the man followed her up Ardnamanagh road, but this was many years later. Her statements that she saw the same man at Kealfadda bridge at 3am on Monday are untrustworthy, but we won't go into this here.
A farmer, Frank Lannin, saw Sophie driving towards Schull from Goleen around 3pm. She saluted him as she passed him in his tractor. The time or the direction of travel must be wrong here.
The final sighting on Saturday she was seen in the Courtyard pub, eating a crab sandwich and left at 3:30pm. Sally Bolger went to feed her horses on Alfie Lyons land at 4:15pm and says she saw Sophie’s car at her house.
Saturday evening is a complete blank. Nobody saw her, she may have called people on the phone but we don’t have precise details. Her husband said she called him twice on Saturday, but we don’t have any confirmation of this.
At some point Sophie changed her ticket home. Her diary has a number listed as “O’Mahony” and the number was the line to the Aer Lingus ticket desk in Charles-de-Gaulle Roissy airport. The new itinerary was faxed to her in her cottage. The reason why she decided to come home early is not known. Her friend Jean Senet said her husband Daniel persuaded her. For his part Daniel said there was no particular plan and he was to pick her up from the airport at Toulouse at 8pm. Another report tells that she came home early to meet her father, so she could help him with his taxes.

Sunday

For Sunday morning we don’t have any reports.
She called to Dunlough at in the early afternoon, perhaps around 1pm. Sophie had walked here several times before. It is a spectacular headland featuring a lake and three crumbling castles. It was cold and dry at the time, good weather for a walk, if bracing. It is necessary to pass the farm to walk the headland and when Sophie did so she met Tomi Ungerer. This was the second time they had met. Sophie had called here in April but it seemed Tomi and his wife were having a row at the time and Tomi had not paid much attention. Daniel said that Sophie feigned a puncture as an excused to call to the farm. In June Sophie had sent Tomi a fax about the death of a mutual colleague, Gilbert Estève. She may have been seeking information or just making contact. Sophie made a habit out of making contacts with important artists and thinkers. It was one of the things that a colleague said of her, she knew all the right people. It is possible that Tomi was one of the people Sophie wanted to meet for a while. Tomi invited her in for a drink after she had finished her walk. She returned an hour later and they had a conversation over two glasses of wine.
Tomi was a renowned visual artist, with a keen eye and a professional interest in culture. Born in Alsace he was marked by World War II and had seen the ravages of the Nazis and the backlash from the French afterwards. He worked for as a cultural ambassador to improve Franco German relations.
The statement that Tomi gave is remarkable in the insight it gives to Sophie’s character her interests and state of mind.
“She was saying how great Ireland was for literature and education compared to France, how France had thousands of books published every year but that there was no good Authors there, how Ireland was vibrant as a centre of literature for a small Country. She discussed her family, moreover her children and their education in France. She indicated that the reason she was here in Ireland was she wanted to be alone for Christmas. I considered this strange but I sometimes like to be alone too. We talked about books and culture and how the language here was more meaningful and truthful compared to the superficial nature of the French.”
“She seemed a very genuine person, a fine person, not pretentious or snobby. I thought she was deep and intelligent, so much so that I made notes of some things she said, “In a language there should be no need of the use of cuteness” “The problem of France is her lack of modesty”. I wrote those saying they might be useful for my work in the futre. I wrote the quotes on a card in which we exchanged addresses before she left. On hindsight now I would go as far as saying she was not beaming, that she had something on her mind. It’s hard when you do not know someone well to say. I offered her a third glass of wine but she did not take any. We gave her some eggs to take with her, half dozen for her supper. We have hens.”
The word “genuine” is telling. Tomi was struck by Irish people, how the highest compliment an Irish person can give about another, is to say that person is “genuine”.
Tomi described her appearance:
“She was wearing some type of black leather expensive looking pants, brown suede hiking boots, a white/cream ribbed polo necked sweater and a beige wool blazer and a navy blue wool jacket with belt and a navy wool cap and red suede gloves, wine/red gloves. She was dressed very well. She had her hair tied back.”
As to her demeanor, this seems to have grown with the telling. The documentaries made much of the legend of the lady of the lake, whose appearance is reputed to be a harbinger of death. This lurid tale does not feature in the early Garda statements. Tomi remarked that “she was not beaming”, that she may have had something on her mind. His wife Yvonne turned up while they were chatting.
“While we were chatting, Sophie told me that while she was up at the castles she felt this great anxiety almost fear. This is not an uncommon feeling for people who visit the castles. She wasn’t in a cheerful mood but she wasn’t really glum either. She talked about her plans for the future and we spoke about meeting up in Paris in the Spring. She seemed happy to be here and she wanted to be here. She said she liked it here but her husband didn’t. She said she would be back at Easter. We made vague arrangements to meet over the next three days. I gave Sophie some eggs and she left here at about 5.45 p.m.” Yvonne’s estimate of the time she left must be an error. It is more likely she left at around 3:45.
After leaving Dunlough Sophie went to Crookhaven to Sullivans pub, a legendary stop. Here she spoke with the proprietor Billy O’Sullivan and his son Dermot, both of whom speak good French and knew Sophie from prior visits. They also knew her friend Alexandra Lewy. One time Alexandra had arranged to buy a cast iron church gate for Sophie’s birthday, Sophie was fond of antiques and bric-a-brac. Dermot had carried this gate up to the cottage. Sophie asked about getting logs for her fire. Dermot recommended she go to a filling station. She said there was only kindling at the filling stations.
It is interesting that so much of Sophie’s alleged stops and conversations were about fire, kindling, logs etc. Despite this, the photos from her house show she had a lot of fuel. There is a stack of logs, several bales of peat briquettes, what looks to be a 40kg bag of coal and one, perhaps two baskets full of kindling. She had enough for days of fires, unless she lit both hearths, which would be unlikely considering the second hearth did not draft properly, and she was arranging to have it fixed. The kindling may have been bought from Camiers Garage when Kitty Kingston reported meeting her on Friday.
She told her friend Alexandra before she left that she was going to sleep in the guest room because it was the warmest room, being directly above the oil range. There was also a brass bedwarmer found next to her bed. All these details point to Sophie being acutely aware of the cold.
A witness heard her discussing the old Coastguard houses with the Sullivans. These are a prominent landmark visible from O’Sullivan’s pub across the water. The witness left before Sophie did at 4:30pm so she must have returned to the cottage no earlier than 5pm.
The witness noted she was wearing “black leather pants and brown suede desert boots and a long chunky jumper”. This matches well with Tomi Ungerer’s account.
Note the "desert boots" seen by this witness and the "suede hiking boots" mentioned by Tomi Ungerer are probably not the hiking boots she was wearing when she died. The hiking boots she was wearing were very worn, the laces had snapped and had been tied halfway down the lace holes. It looks to me she shoved them on without untying/tying the laces. Sophie would not have visited Schull wearing old worn-out shoes. A pair of dark brown suede "desert boots" are visible at the bottom of the stairs in the garda photos. These match better with the shoes seen by the witness.
It’s 25 minutes drive from Crookhaven back to the cottage so if Sophie left at 4:30 she would have been back home before 5pm.
We know she most likely went home, because at 5:32pm she called her friend Agnès Thomas to wish her a happy birthday. Agnès was out so Sophie left a message.
The postman called at 6pm and noted the lights were on. Presumably he was doing a Sunday shift to cope with the Christmas rush. He didn’t see Sophie’s car, but as he only went as far as the lower gate, it is quite possible he missed it.
At 7:30pm she called her housekeeper Josephine but she was out. She tried her again at 9:10pm but again she was out. Josephine returned and called her back at 10pm. Sophie told her she would be leaving on the 24th, not the 26th as she originally intended. They arranged to meet the following day at noon.
Sophie’s phone records were not available, as the exchange she was on was a traditional analogue exchange, with no recording facility. Schull was one of the last places in the country to have such an old system. Days later Garda technicians tried to retrieve call details from her cordless phone but its batteries were flat and nothing was found.
At around 10:30pm she called her husband Daniel, who said he couldn’t take her call. He said he was in a meeting with Unifrance associates. As it was nearly midnight in France, this an unusual time to have a work meeting. Daniel called her back “about twelve minutes later”. He said she was sleepy and probably in bed. Given that the cordless phone was found next to her bed, this seems plausible. He also said that she told him about her visit to the Ungerers and had formed a work project with him. He said she told him she returned home at 9:30pm, but he could be wrong about this. The phone calls to her friend and housekeeper strongly suggest she was at home from 5:30pm.
This was the last anyone heard from Sophie until her body was discovered at 10am the following morning.
From this point all we have is are the police photos and the story they tell is ambiguous, there are multiple possible interpretations.
The fire was lit that evening and there was an empty wine glass on the mantlepiece with dregs of wine in it. There was a loaf of bread, a white crusty “basket loaf” which had been sliced and left open. This is odd as there are no crumbs visible on the table and no plate. Would Sophie have gone to bed leaving the bread out? It’s possible. Another possibility is that the bread was sliced in the morning. But if so where is the plate that she used?
Conceivably Sophie may have left these items from another evening, but it is more likely she consumed the wine that evening, possibly with some cheese she had in her pantry, and the bread she had cut. There was a book open on the table, propped open by a jar of honey next to an empty teacup. However as the cordless phone was found by her bedside, it seems likely this was all left from the previous evening.
It seems the most likely Sophie spent her last night reading, went to bed and then took the call from Daniel.
The book propped open was not a Yeat’s anthology. There is a tale repeated by many true crime authors that Sophie was reading a Yeats poem called “A Dream Death”. It contains the lines
I DREAMED that one had died in a strange place Near no accustomed hand,
Ralph Riegel titled his book after this poem. But this is not the poem she was reading, if any. Yes there was a Yeats anthology found on her bed, but not the bed she slept in, it was on the bed in her personal room which she didn’t use that weekend. The anthology is “Quarente-cinq poèmes suivi de La Résurrection”, a collection of later Yeats poems translated by Yves Bonnefoy. It does not contain the poem “A Dream of Death” but it does contain a poem called “Death”, a meditation on how animals die versus men.
Nor dread nor hope attend A dying animal; A man awaits his end Dreading and hoping all;
But the Yeats anthology is not open on the bed, it is closed in the police photos. Unless the Gardai picked it up before photographing the room, then we cannot be sure what poem or poems she read. As regards the book propped open on the kitchen table, it’s prose and it is French. Journalist Lara Marlowe wrote that the book open on the table was a book about lighthouses.
Among the exhibits the Gardai took are three books
  1. Le Coeur Battant – “The beating heart” – this is the title of a 1960 French movie.
  2. Le Tenes Vert – Unknown – looks like a transcription error by the Gardai, could be “Les Terres Vertes”
  3. Le Cine Monde – World Cinema
Other books in the house seem to correspond well with what we know of her character. On the landing there is another book from an Irish writer, Sean O’Casey, “Les Tambours de Dublin” in French.
On the shelf in her box bedroom we can see a book by Virginia Woolf, the title itself is illegible in the photo but Woolf’s distinctive profile photo is visible on the spine. I wonder if the book might be “A Room of one’s Own”. This essay advocated that a woman writer could never accomplish anything unless she had financial independence and her own space to work in. Even if it was some other book by Woolf, this essay would have been known to Sophie. It hints at what the white cottage meant to her. Her tiny box room tucked under the gable and raised single bed was a quasi-monastic cell - a creative space, a room of her own in West Cork.

Richard Sheridan, a longtime public servant whose Selectboard tenure ended in January, died unexpectedly on April 29. He was 78.
Selectboard members on Wednesday held a moment of silence for their former colleague and Chair Tom Smith praised Sheridan’s commitment to the town.
“Richard was a unique person. He will be greatly missed. He and I could argue but we could also be friends, which is kind of a hard thing,” Smith said. “Richard loved the town of Orange. He fought very hard for the town of Orange and he dedicated a lot of time to the town of Orange, and I will miss seeing him at the meetings.”
A handful of Sheridan’s friends, all wearing black to indicate mourning, attended part of Wednesday’s Selectboard meeting. During the portion designated for public comment, Michael Sinclair read a poem Sheridan penned exactly one month before he died. The five-stanza poem attacks the “oligarchy” that runs Orange and “the few” who supposedly work to destroy it.
“Well I guess it’s the end of my rant / Giving up on freedom … I’m afraid I can’t / Tell them you want to be heard / Stop treating us as some kind of turd,” the poem ends.
Sheridan had served on the Selectboard, the Planning Board, the Economic Development and Industrial Corporation, and the Orange Armory Commission. He also owned a small businesses and worked as a mechanic, a contractor and a real estate agent.
Friend Sandra Fawn Weinstein said she spoke with Sheridan just 24 hours before his death. “It’s going to make these meetings much more boring, for sure,” Weinstein told a reporter after leaving the meeting.
“Less colorful,” Ann Reed added before addressing Sinclair. “Mike, the fact that you read his poem tonight means that he even made this meeting.”
Moments before the start of Sheridan’s final Special Town Meeting in January, Reed read a prepared statement thanking him for his decades of dedication, and Denise Andrews, who once represented Orange in the state Legislature, presented him with an official citation. Sheridan looked surprised and humbled by the acknowledgments and thanked everyone in the audience.
“I’ll still be around,” he said. “I’ll be on the other side, causing problems.”
On Wednesday, Reed said it now feels prophetic and cryptic that Sheridan mentioned “the other side.”
Sheridan was known for being a stickler for the rules and his libertarian leanings. He had also made it his mission to save the 111-year-old Orange Armory from demolition, arguing it is structurally sound and salvageable. In his final Selectboard meeting, on Jan. 31, he warned his colleagues against denying access to the building to members of the Armory Commission.
“If this board is going to decide not to let anyone from the Armory Commission go into that building, it’s my last night here, but it’s not my last day on the Armory Commission — I’ll be back,” he said. He had opted not to seek reelection to his Selectboard position in January’s town election.
Before adjourning the Jan. 31 meeting, Selectboard members thanked Sheridan for his decades of service to Orange. Member Jane Peirce said the two of them had a combined 100 years of municipal experience on town boards and committees. She mentioned the public perception that she and Sheridan disliked each other, but said that was not true. She stressed that their disagreements — which on occasion became heated — were simply the result of their differing opinions on what is best for the town they love.
“I think that the two of us have done some really good work over the years,” Peirce said in January. “The fact is, as a human being, the guy has a heart of gold and he is probably one of the kindest and most caring individuals you will ever find in this town or anywhere else. When we argue, when I don’t agree with him, it’s because we differ philosophically in our ideas about policy and political philosophy and everything else, but I truly love the guy.
“And I will miss having you here,” she said, turning to Sheridan, “just so I can prove you wrong over and over again, as I so often do.”

2024.05.11 00:43 Rare_Cranberry_734 Success after loss

Hey! Longtime lurker, first time contributor here. This sub and all of your stories have given me hope and gotten me through some of my darkest days. At 10 months postpartum I'm finally feeling ready to share my story. This is going to be a long one, but bear with me !
In early 2021 I became pregnant for the first time. The pregnancy progressed fairly normally until I ended up at my local hospitals maternity department at 22w3d with cramping, pressure and spotting. After an exam and ultrasound the doctor told me i was funneling internally with membranes bulging into my cervix. It was decided that an emergency cerclage would most like rupture my membranes so I was given a bunch of medications ( tocolytics, antibiotics, iv fluids) to hopefully stop what was happening. Unfortunately, this did not work as planned and 36 hours later I gave birth to our son. He lived for 2 hours before we had to say goodbye. This was the single most devastating thing to ever happen to me, it felt like a bomb went off in the middle of my perfect life.
At my post partum appointment a few weeks later, my OB told me the doctor who delivered my son suspected I had "abnormal anatomy" . She sent me for numerous tests ( ultrasound, MRI, hysteroscopy) and eventually I was given a diagnosis: uterus didelphys ( 2 uteruses) with 2 fused cervices ( each uterus has its own cervix). After consulting with colleagues my doctor told me that they had never seen anyone with anatomy quite like mine. I was told that surrogacy would most likely be my only option for ever having a living biological child. However, I sought a second opinion with a highly experienced MFM who believed we could get well passed viability with the help of a preventative cerclage.
It was during my research into cerclages and cervical insufficiency that I discovered this sub. Reading first hand accounts of success with preventative cerclages gave me hope and the courage to try again.
In fall 2022, I became pregnant for the second time. At 13 weeks I had a preventative cerclage placed. Due to my unique anatomy, my cerclage was placed around both of my cervices. After the procedure I received bi weekly ultrasounds to monitor my cervical length. Things progressed well until about 21 weeks when I once again began to experience pressure and cramping. I got to the hospital only a few hours after I began experiencing symptoms, and there they realized my cerclage was failing ( about 1-2cm dilated). To this day I feel so very lucky that my MFM was at the hospital that day. When she was informed what was happening she immediately found an open OR and I was wheeled into surgery for a second emergency cerclage within 2 hours of arriving at the hospital. The second cerclage took twice as long as the first as my doctor was adamant that she was going to get this cerclage around only the cervix of the pregnant uterus. After what felt like forever, she was able to do what she set out to. I stayed overnight at the hospital to ensure I didn't go into preterm labour and was discharged the next day.
After my second cerclage I was put on complete pelvic rest and modified bed rest. I also went on medical leave from work. The anxiety and fear I felt during this time was so immense. I tried my best to keep busy from my couch with reading, netflix, and podcasts, but time passed so slowly. I continued to be monitored biweekly and thankfully my cervix never went below 3cm. I felt such disbelief every time I passed another milestone, 24 weeks, 28 weeks, 32 weeks and beyond. My baby was doing so well ,and despite limited space due to my uterine abnormality, she continued to grow right on track. Before I knew it we were at cerclage removal time (36 weeks). My removal was extremely challenging and uncomfortable due to my anatomy and the fact that I had two cerclages. In the end, my doctor was only able to remove one of my cerclages at the appointment. The second would have to be removed at my scheduled c section under anesthetic.
Finally, the day of my csection arrived ( baby was breech due to my uterine size/shape). I could not believe that after everything my husband and I had been through that we had made it to 39w3d! The csection went well and my daughter was born healthy and screaming! The removal of my second cerclage in the OR took longer than the actual csection part, it was so embedded my doctor had to page a colleague to come assist.
It has been 10 months since the birth of my daughter and some days I look at her and still can't believe that she's here. If you had told me two years ago that i would have what I have now, I wouldn't believe you. The journey to get here was so long and so dark at times, but I am so glad that I pushed through. To those of you in the thick of it right now, take it one day at a time, one milestone at a time. To those of you who have courageously shared your stories, thank you. There were days during my pregnancy when I checked this sub multiple times a day, desperate to read the success stories. Some days reading about other women who were going through a similar journey as myself was the only thing to keep me sane.
I hope my story can bring some of you hope and the energy to keep going, the same way your stories did for me.

2024.05.10 22:59 autumnrose22SB I have to get a hysterectomy on Monday

I have a very large fibroid growing in the muscle of my uterus and as I have been processing through what it will mean to have it removed, I wrote this poem.
I wrote a poem to my uterus.
You are leaving. I am not ready to say goodbye. You are the most beautiful part of me. People wonder if there is a God, it is you. You create life. You cleanse everything that needs to be cleansed. You are stronger than any other part of me. And now I have to say goodbye. No more little toes, no more suckling. It is time to say goodbye. But I am not ready. Fluttering heartbeats. Strong movements. I wanted this forever and now it is over. I am lucky. I had time. I had opportunity. Now it is time to say goodbye and I don’t know how. I missed your beauty. I missed your primal, basic, simple and overwhelming importance. I took advantage of your strength. Thank you for holding my babies before I could. Thank you for stripping me of life’s complexities each month. Thank you for filling me with life. Thank you for filling me with love. It is time to say goodbye. And I don’t know how. I could bury you under a tree. I could let you become medical waste. All I can do is cry. It is time to say goodbye. And I don’t know how.

2024.05.10 22:54 Lootlizard GO FOR BROKE

GO FOR BROKE
What’s up Dawgs. Everyone seemed to like the write up I did last week about the 1st Minnesota so I wanted to follow up with a write up about another one of my favorite military units, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
The 442nd perfectly encapsulated the Dan Carlin quote “The Japanese were just like everyone else, only more so.” In the short period that the unit was active they won more awards for valor than any other unit of their size and length of service in the history of the United States military. Their unit won over 14,000 awards including 21 Medals of Honor, 29 Distinguished Service Crosses, 560 Silver Stars, more than 4,000 Bronze Stars, more than 4000 Purple Hearts, and 7 Presidential Unit Citations
The unit was created in February of 1943 and was composed almost entirely of Japanese American citizens, mostly “Nisei” which were 2nd generation Americans. These men were primarily recruited from Hawaii but many were also recruited from the mainland internment camps. The common goodbye that the Japanese American parents gave to their sons as they left for basic training was Shikkari Shinasai which roughly translates to “Do it Right” in English. Appropriately the unit chose the phrase “Go For Broke” as their motto.
https://preview.redd.it/0ijbsbzbvnzc1.png?width=294&format=png&auto=webp&s=7182f6995f0fb8f20ea33bf42551d3d6e7e311c6
The 442nd completed their training and was deployed to Italy in May of 1944 where they would link up with the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate), another all-Japanese unit that had already won a ton of awards. The 100th would then become the 1st Battalion of the 442nd. They would help push the German’s north from the Anzio beaches out of Rome and all the way up to the Arno river in Tuscany.
https://preview.redd.it/6e923mekvnzc1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=28039aef1670f8974deb429e475245b46bd3d5a6
They would then be pulled off the line and redeployed for the invasion of Southern France. Where they would battle their way up through France before leading the rescue of the “Lost Battalion”.
Against orders Major General John Dahlquist committed the 141st Infantries 1st battalion known as the "Texas Battalion" to chasing a German unit that was ostensibly retreating through the Vosges mountains of Northern France. This was only a feint though and the Germans promptly turned around and surrounded the out of place battalion of about 270 men with a force of over 6000 Germans. The other 2 battalions of the 141st made rescue attempts but they were beaten back by the Germans. At this point, with the Texas Battalion desperately low on food and ammunition the 442nd was called in to lead the rescue. Reportedly Adolf Hitler himself was told of the trapped Texan unit and issued orders stating that they should not be rescued no matter the cost to the Germans. Unfortunately for him, for the next 6 days the 442nd would fight continuously at times outnumbered 4 to 1 by the Germans in a desperate attempt to save their countrymen. They continuously advanced, smashing through prepared German defenses one after the other at the cost of massive casualties to themselves. After 6 days the 211 remaining men of the lost battalion would finally be rescued, at the cost of 800 casualties for the 442nd. I Company started the assault with 185 men by the end of the 6 days only 8 men remained unwounded. K Company engaged the enemy with 186 men, of which 169 would be killed or wounded. The men of 442nd truly lived up to their monicker of Go For Broke. In 1962 Texas Governor John Connally would proclaim the veterans of the 442nd honorary Texans for their sacrifice in the rescue of the lost battalion.

The 442nd would then take part in several other actions in Northern France and Southern Germany before being moved back to Italy to assist in breaking through the Gothic Line held by the last stubborn remnants of the Wehrmacht in Italy, until the Germans surrendered on May 5th 1945.
I would love to sit and write of all the great charges and deeds done by the 442nd but this is already getting long and this is a sub reddit for a bunch of borderline autistic guys to express their parasocial feelings for 2 funny guys from Philly not a military history forum so I’ll just talk about 1 guy.
Sadao Munemori was the first Japanese American to be awarded the Medal of Honor. He was recruited from the Manzanar internment camp by the Military Intelligence Service to work as a translator but as soon as he found out a combat unit was being formed, he accepted a voluntary demotion from Technical Sergeant to Private in exchange for being able to transfer to the newly formed combat unit. He would be sent to Italy and serve in the 100th battalion for the remainder of the war fighting in Italy and France. Munemori won his medal and subsequently lost his life on a mountain ridge near Seravezza Italy on April 5th 1945.
https://preview.redd.it/a4vm9y48vnzc1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=569f48bfa0366e247b7b1f19711c4929bda40ed0
Sadao’s squad was pinned down by flanking fire coming from 2 machine gun positions dug in on top of nearby ridge. His squad leader was killed in the initial burst and him and all of his friends were trapped by continuous fire from the machine guns. Seeing the desperation in the eyes of his friends and knowing something had to be done Sadao threw himself out of his cover and charged up the ridge by himself. Dodging from shell hole to shell hole while taking continuous fire from multiple machine guns and dozens of German soldiers, Sadao miraculously made his way within throwing distance of one of the machine guns which he promptly destroyed with a few well thrown grenades. He then dodged across more open ground to another shell hole where he promptly destroyed another machine gun with grenades. Now that the machine guns were destroyed all he had to do was make it back down to his men, while dodging the massive amount of grenades and small arms fire from the remaining Germans. In his 2nd miracle of the day Sadao made it back to a shell hole containing 2 of his men but, just as he was about to dive into the relative safety of the shell hole with his men, Sadao felt something heavy bounce off the top of his helmet. A well thrown German grenade has bounced directly off his helmet and landed at the feet of his men. Without hesitation or a word spoken Sadao jumped on top of the grenade and smothered the blast with his own body. The blast killed him instantly but saved the lives of his men.
A statue Sadao Munemori stands in Pietrasanta Italy a short way from where he died as a memorial to all those who died liberating the area. On March 13th of 1946 Sadao’s mother would be presented the Medal of Honor in his stead. He was the first Japanese American to ever receive the medal and the only member of the 442nd to receive it directly after the war.
Well Dawgs sorry this one wasn’t as exciting as the charge of the 1st Minnesota. I would love to sit and write paragraph after paragraph about all the awesome stuff the 442nd did but this is a comedy sub reddit and I’m trying to keep these relatively short. I leave you with an excerpt from the poem “Let America be America Again” by Langston Hughes. I believe it encapsulates in some small way the feelings of these great Americans. Though their unit was outcast and segregated, their families torn from their homes and detained, themselves demoted and treated like second class citizens they never stopped believing in America. In the promise of this great land and the potential of what it could become. In the belief that the wretched refuse of a thousand foreign shores could come together to build the greatest country the world has ever seen.
O, let America be America again—
The land that never has been yet—
And yet must be—the land where every man is free.
The land that’s mine—the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME—
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.
Sure, call me any ugly name you choose—
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people’s lives,
We must take back our land again,
America!
O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath—
America will be!

2024.05.10 20:29 ACertainThrowawayTag A Brief Review of Trails of Cold Steel IV: Act Three- A Worthy Rivalry

Previous Post-
A Brief Review of Trails of Cold Steel IV: Act Two- New Game, Old Demons by inFalcom
Introduction- Act Three definitely isn't perfect, however what it does right, it does really, really right, Both rivalries have an emotional conclusion, ESPECIALLY, Arianrhod's. I don't think it's all good, however my complaints are minimal in the face of some really satisfying character resolutions, character moments, and the 'what the hell' nature of the final five minutes.
Pros- -The Shrines/Sanctuaries Compared to CS2, this is so much better. Final confrontations with the groups of enemies you've been fighting since Cold Steel 2, hell even Cold Steel 1 in a sense, decent dungeon design (and blessedly short dungeons compared to some of the more tedious parts of Cold Steel 2's shrines), and a nice sense of progression throughout. Good experience overall.
-Rutger Whilst not the plot point I was the most invested in, Rutger's story is a pretty interesting one- the only posthumous awakener, a man beloved by colleagues and enemies alike, and who went out entirely on his own terms, with the daughter he loved having grown up into an accomplished and promising young Bracer, and the corps he built being able to continue in his absence, unlike the first time he died. I wonder what Garcia'd think if he ran into him.
-Maiden Lianne Sandlot The name tag change thing that this series sometimes does really gets me sometimes, and nowhere did it get me more than in the final moments of one Lianne Sandlot. We've known her as Arianrhod, the indomitable Steel Maiden, who's first appearance in Azure led to more questions than answers. We've known her as the Seventh Anguis, member of Ouroboros, and it's most imposing martial force aside from Loewe and McBurn. We've known her as all of these things and more. And yet, in her final moments, surrounded by an old friend, the three women she rescued and helped raise, and the son of the reincarnation of her love, we see her for the woman she was. Serene, compassionate to the end, and with a final trick up her sleeve. It's an almost perfect way to say goodbye to one of the best characters from the series.
-Rufus Rufus appears for about 1 minute in this Act, and it's the best minute a character's had since Osbourne wrote his fairy tale. He kills Arianrhod in cold blood, and flies off without any noticable sense of guilt. In one thrust of a sword he proved all of his character build up and previous actions were not a front, and that this is the man he is. I like Lechter, and I like Claire, but they don't come close to matching up to the charisma that exudes from every part of Rufus' character.
-Bonding Events I have the same problem I had for Act 2's bonding events, but I think they've really stepped their game up here. Visiting the Black Workshop with Altina, going out for ice cream with Duvalie, finding out who the man who saved Ash was, and more. Understated but in places some really beautiful expressions of character. Really good.
-Arc en Ciel It's been a while since we got a patented Trails stage performance bonanza, and this one was so much better than the one we got in CS2. Still doesn't measure up to FC and Zero's, but seeing Estelle be goofy on stage and the sheer comedy of Vita and Bleublanc just teleporting in mid performance really made it special.
-Some of the sidequests Operation: Free Eryn, Super Swimming Showdown with Shirley of all people, the one with Maya and her dad and ESPECIALLY the Interview with Nielsen were all fascinating. They really represent some of the best parts of the series, and how well thought out some of its side content is.
Cons- -Victor I understand the mechanism behind Victor being controlled by the curse, I understand why his mask falling off at the end of the battle was more a sign of his defeat than the reason the curse left him, but why? Why go through all of this? It makes Laura's personal story feel a lot... less interesting. CS12 Laura was not always the best character, but she had some really interesting moments, and was a well-rounded, interesting character with a lot of development potential. Instead, in CS34, her role first got borrowed by Aurelia, and then completely stolen in CS4 by Duvalie who took both Laura's connection to Arianrhod and as the 'young swordswoman' away.
Victor should've died on the Courageous. His wounds could've been too much to recover from even with Olivert and Toval escaping the way they did. It would've been better than what we got.
-Sidequests Even though I liked some of the sidequests, others didn't feel that worthwhile. I feel like in CS34 the sidequests have gotten a little bit samey, or lacking in interest at points. I feel like the series' sidequests reached their peak in the Crossbell series, and aside from some incredible exceptions when they haven't been on that level, they've just not had the same consistent quality since. Maybe that's just me though.
Conclusion- Can't wait for the last set of bonding events at Mishelham and the finale. Don't think I'll review Eventide, but I might. And you'd best believe I'm reviewing the hell out of the finale, alongside the game as a whole. Hope you enjoyed reading, and see you at the end of the Cold Steel saga (unless you count Reverie as part of it).

2024.05.10 19:32 Tigerturm Advice: First Poem "Genius and Madness"

First Poem, my english isn't perfect IK XD. Please if you need any advice, improvement strategies, comments etc just call me <3
Genius and Madness
Genius and Madness are never far away from eachother, they say.
But do they explain how your mind needs to break at first? Slashed apart, drowned in hate and crushed?
When you scratch the corners of reality, expand your imagination in eternity, you forget how to speak, how to think, how to sleep, but instead; you feel. You feel something in a way utterly different then it's supposed to for humankind. And you drown completely in this deep strong sea Full of Beauty, Magic, Sense and Grieve.
Through the bleeding cracks of your heart, Deceitful Tears escape their lifeless hole, ripping it apart. Remorseful Screams & Hidden Schemes
Enchanting pieces sounding just like deadly rumble of thunder, the darkblue sky crashing on the ground, making our planet crumble, The beautiful end of the world ♡
And you should shake in fear and agony, but you are way to distracted by the glory near. By the darkred puddles forming under those grayish bodies, The last goodbye, the last kiss, the last spoken word in this doomed world;
The mesmeric tragic Of our beautiful kind
And while you feel you should break You are meant to observe, meant to create and meant to be alive, for humanities sake.
The shattered heart and dying mind Were just your next platform to fly Grow new wings, fly high, rise upon the starless clowdy nights.
U get lost in the fogging, destructive labyrinth of your chaotic, maximalist mind
And while you break apart, atleast the outcome will make a change large. The true projection of your imagination, an opera and a painting, the most sweet melodies, a beautiful grasp of what you can hear and feel, a rennaisance painting and your mother's love fainting. All of this at once,
This Projection just after a single glance, your soul traveling to places you have never seen before, which must not even be in this time, but in every case cached from a rhyme in your mind. You feel all those helpless souls aching and those visions of those unknown places. This new World, It must not be existing, but in any case your reality is shifting.
You are a dreamer, a creator, an artist of his kind, a poet who will never get to escape his mind.
Terror, Fear, Greatness and Imagination.
You feel so much more, from the deepest of you core, even more on the tip of your bleeding tongue, leaving u either in an utterly compulsive Strangulation or a Ecstatic Fascination balancing between this thin line of Destinarion.
Use your power and extraordinary Expectation, and change the world within your imagination.
The world is yours, you have no rules and no obligations, but surely always keep this advice caught and put away.
Loose your reckless Mind and find your ancient, bewitching Soul!
The Sake of Life is the search for a beauty ripe and your loved childs destinies to immerge & rise high.
All This Love is Art and all this Art is Beauty!
Show the world your meaningfull Creations and captivating Fascinations.
Embrace your tragic Gift and turn the world around in a magic, beautiful Twist.
Time will come where you are going to be treated completely loved and kind, you just need to survive. Your creative visions are going to change this earth as it's given, shout your message into the world, test the limitis of your mind and never tolerate reality just blind!

United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights: A/HRC/55/73: Report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 - Advance unedited version ["After five months of military operations, Israel has destroyed Gaza. Over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 13,000 children. Over 12,000 are presumed dead and 71,000 injured, many with life-changing mutilations. Seventy percent of residential areas have been destroyed. Eighty percent of the whole population has been forcibly displaced. Thousands of families have lost loved ones or have been wiped out. Many could not bury and mourn their relatives, forced instead to leave their bodies decomposing in homes, in the street or under the rubble. Thousands have been detained and systematically subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment. The incalculable collective trauma will be experienced for generations to come. By analysing the patterns of violence and Israel’s policies in its onslaught on Gaza, this report concludes that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the threshold indicating Israel’s commission of genocide is met. One of the key findings is that Israel's executive and military leadership and soldiers have intentionally distorted jus in bello principles, subverting their protective functions, in an attempt to legitimize genocidal violence against the Palestinian people."] (March 25, 2024): https://www.ohchr.org/en/documents/country-reports/ahrc5573-report-special-rapporteur-situation-human-rights-palestinian
