2024.05.15 15:53 Plane-Manufacturer96 Subclass 500 enquiry on behalf of a friend.

Hello!
On behalf of my friend (he doesn't use reddit) I want to ask a few question in regard to his upcoming visa application (Subclass 500) for his Master studies at UNSW, he asked me because I'm currently studying in Melb but I honestly don't know the answer so I'll post it here.
He was an exchange student from RMIT Vietnam to RMIT Melbourne in 2023 for 6 month and he was granted a 6 month subclass 500 visa for that purpose of study, he left Australia just 3 days before the visa expired because he spend the majority of the semester break touring Victoria, SA, and WA (He didn't work, it was self funded by his family), some people said when he applied again, the immigration department will raise eyebrows on the fact that he left so close to being an overstay and they might assume he will want to stay in Australia after his next studies, and possibly become an overstayer, he wanted to know if this is true or people just want to scare him because of the recent changes in immigration law that make the process stricter.
Additional information: he didn't travel much and his exchange to Australia last year is his first and only time traveling abroad, and he won't intend to stay in Australia after finishing his Master because he will take over his family's business back in Vietnam so no 485 or anything after.
Cheers.

2024.05.15 11:32 LogicalGround1201 Redundancy and Annual Earnings - 190/189 ROI

Hi Everyone, I am a Spatial Scientist, currently on a 485 VISA. I had put up an ROI for 190 VISA,from Victoria in December 2023. I was recently made redundant at my job.
My 485 VISA ends next year in March. I am really worried and would like to know what impact this sudden redundancy can have on my 190 and 189 visa application.
Also if I an not able to find a new job quickly do I need to update my Annual Earnings in ROI?
I currently have 90+5 points for 190 Visa and 90 points for 189. I also have 2 years of experience working full time in my field in Australia.

2024.05.14 11:56 Defiant_Bad_9070 Leasing a property and keeping pets. The ACTUAL facts.

I've seen quite a few posts recently about REAs declining pet requests and people just accepting it.
Fact is, since March 2020 your rights are very cut and dry about this and they're in the TENANTS favour. They can be found here. Note: These laws are current as of today 14th May 2024. Pets in rental properties - Consumer Affairs Victoria
I'll attempt to lay it out as simply as possible.
Firstly, all pet requests must use the following form. One for each pet. https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/search-results?s=pet+request+form
You submit this form to the REA. They then pass it on to the landlord. At which point the landlord then has 14 days (from the day after they receive the application) to notify the tenant that they have applied to VCAT to deny your claim. The notification can't say that they will be applying, but that they already have and it must also include a copy of their application to VCAT.
If you do not hear back from the landlord within 14 days, you are in the clear and well within your rights to go and get the pet.
If you do receive the correct notification that the landlord has applied, you must NOT get the pet until VCAT has reached a verdict.
There are however potential reasons to deny your application without need for applying to VCAT. If for instance you live in a flat, unit or apartment, there is potentially a body corporate that has it's own rules regarding pets. If this is the case, the landlord must again, notify you within 14 days and also provide the relevant documentation from the body corporate.
Just because they apply to deny your application, this does not mean they will be granted a right to deny. They cannot unreasonably refuse your application. You want a cat in your apartment? Provided the body corporate is fine with it, there won't be an issue. You want to keep a large dog like a Doberman, Rottweiler, Labrador or whatever in your apartment? Expect it to be rejected... Lets be reasonable here!
The pet must also be allowed be under your local council laws. This one is on you to know.
Now, some landlords may agree but give you stipulations. You don't have to agree to them. In which case, the landlord must again apply to VCAT. Some landlords may demand you pay an additional "pet bond" ...thats nice, tell them very politely to get fucked. You do not have to pay it.
Now look, they go on about pets causing damage to the property and you being responsible. Yep. Very true. Cat pisses all over the carpet and creates a stench... thats on you. Don't be a dick. Do keep in mind though, that when the landlord makes a damages claim to VCAT to fix that piss soaked carpet, VCAT will keep in mind fair wear and tear plus age and condition.
This is not a guide on how to make nice and be friendly with your REA and Landlord. This is a guide to your rights and what you can and can't do. If they just say no pets and deny your application without applying to VCAT and knowing your rights you wait the two weeks and then go and get the pet as you're allowed too... don't expect the REAs to be all pleasant about it. They're going to be cunts. Because REAs are cunts and their word is above law and God almighty... Just ask them! Ha!
Hopefully, this has cleared some shit up for people and is also a post that can be referenced when this question comes up in the sub. Did I miss anything or does anyone want some clarification on something? Happy to answer!

2024.05.14 05:23 Street-Medium-9156 Possible to re-apply for TRP after getting ejected?

I am inadmissible to Canada due to a DUI in Washington state in July 2014. (Not realizing it would extend my inadmissibility, I made minimum amount, interest-free payments on my court fees and didn’t get them all paid off until 2021) I’m trying to participate in a boat race that goes from WA to Alaska but unfortunately there is a mandatory layover in Victoria BC. I applied for a TRP at the border and was rejected because my trip didn’t provide economic benefit to Canada. I’m trying to figure out if I can reapply with a revised application. My idea was to a) provide a copy of a study from the Canadian government about the importance of funding tourism via events such as this b) highlight that 40 boats will be paying moorage, eating in restaurants, provisioning etc and c) do some fundraising for a Victoria-based non-profit. Does anyone know if I can re-apply? I’m not very optimistic even if I can, but not sure what else I can do. I’ve been dreaming of doing this race since it was created (which happened to be around the time I got arrested), but when I applied for the TRP I kinda realized I’m just another American asshole with a DUI trying to go on vacation in BC. They don’t seem keen on granting TRPs in that scenario. TL;DR: don’t drink and drive.

2024.05.14 04:35 Shannon_Canadians Got accepted to both UVic and UBC BSW programs!

Hi great people of socialworkcanada
I've posted this about a couple of months ago - as of today (May 13th 2024), I got accepted to both UBC and UVic BSW, which are also the only two BSW programs I've applied to!
https://www.reddit.com/socialworkcanada/comments/1ac35vu/ubc_or_uvic_social_work_for_bsw/
My approach to the supplement forms for both schools:
UVic BSW - As for the UVic personal statement, I mostly focused on speaking about my heart to advocate for equity, and not necessarily about intersectionality. Though I still indirectly said something about my social position (saying I am a heterosexual cis-male, healthy, etc) based on a very confidential case where I assisted someone experiencing a crisis and needed immediate assistance for their safety.
As for the work/volunteer experience portion, I kind of discussed how my first social service experience led to B, then C, which eventually helped me perform better at D, blablabla... just like that. Like, for instance, at my practicum the Senior Caseworker taught me how to conduct casework with each client and I've explained how that casework experience later helped me at my actual paid social service job later on which was actually true.
UBC BSW - As for the UBC personal statement, I narrated my personal stories of being an immigrant who came to Canada (Victoria BC originally) as a Grade 8 student without family or family friends, etc and how that led to wanting to help people as a Social Worker. I did talk about my strengths which are immigrant experiences, compassion and cultural sensitivity and on the other hand, as for my limitations, I had to think from an intersectionality perspective and discussed on how my privileges as a young healthy man might be a barrier to understand people who are socially disadvantaged than I am.
As for the work/volunteer experience portion, I did focus more on the combined 500+ hour volunteer and practicum experience over my 6000+ work experience since the volunteer experience portion seemed to be more detailed than work experience with UBC's. I still kind of followed the same format as I did with my UVic work/volunteer experience portion. However, I referred to my job description in my job offer to write about my work experience in the UBC application.
Something to note:
Please keep in mind that I was probably quite advantaged in my application compared to some other BSW applicants due to the fact that I had lots of worked/volunteepracticum experience of total 6500+ hours and that I am a racial minority, also a 1st generation immigrant from overseas who moved to Canada and has lived in 3 different Canadian cities (Victoria, Toronto and Vancouver) by himself since the age of 14. Average GPA in the last 10 1st and 2nd year university courses including the 2nd year Intro Social Work courses were probably at least 3.60/4.33 ish.
If you're looking to apply to these schools in the next years, I hope this might be helpful in the slightest with your supplementary applications.

Thousand Sons Cultist Conversions / Prints Advice
I personally don't like the look of the normal chaos cultists and I'm not a big fan of using Tzaangors as it may be a bit confusing.
So I was looking around for inspiration via either 3d printing or kitbashing as right now both are an option.
I came across the Dawn Of War 2 Retribution Elite Mod. They were exactly what I'm looking for, hooded figures with a touch of Tzeentch. As cultists should be. So firstly a began looking for 3d prints but couldn't find any models that fit the vibe I was looking for.
https://preview.redd.it/yrd6qfluba0d1.png?width=388&format=png&auto=webp&s=e780f36d99d3c3b7e6c9914200faa567e9e83c0e
I then began a short rabbit hole of model extraction from video games into printable files but I'm not the best modder or anything like that and the application to do so was hidden behind a paywall so I strayed away from that.
So next, I looked at official models to see what I could muster. I liked the hooded look of the Aledari Rangers but their hoods were a bit revealing and getting an Eldar head out of those hoods seemed annoying but I don't know if the hood is a separate piece so it's an option.
https://preview.redd.it/o9q887exba0d1.png?width=771&format=png&auto=webp&s=60ac65762ed549e95894d9d4bf657ee7324dc544
Then I found the Astra Militarum Tempestus Scions and they look like they may fit perfectly within' a Thousand Sons army so buying 2 of those boxes is another thing I'm looking at.
https://preview.redd.it/sdlk3dgzba0d1.png?width=772&format=png&auto=webp&s=8033a227beea58ff9074f6a53cd958172038fc5e
Turning my eyes to Age Of Sigmar. I found 2 Warcrys that may do the job. The Jade Obelisk and The Cypher Lords. The obvious issue being their lack of guns and the kitbashing it would take to have them carry the guns.
https://preview.redd.it/wfzs73q1ca0d1.png?width=772&format=png&auto=webp&s=bae20befc5801400218c7c9b2fab9a931df81750

So, is there any advice my fellow Thousand Sons players can point me towards? What do you guys use for cultists if you have any in your army list. What would you use if you don't? Any advice or guidance towards 3d files that may be what I'm looking for?

2024.05.13 12:57 thathalfasiankid DSA to JC for multiple talent areas at once

Ok, lets say that I apply to Victoria junior college for football and have submitted an application, however, I would also like to apply for volleyball to VJC as well. Is it allowed? Would the two applications cancel out each other and none would work or will they allow me to go for both interviews and let me pick?

2024.05.13 04:42 PortentousChordata Let's collaborate on interstate anaesthesia/ICU SRMO job applications.

Hello aspiring anaesthesia/ICU SRMO applicants from around the country!
I'm a PGY2 surgical resident from Victoria. I'm interested in training in anaesthesia and have been for a long time. I'm very familiar with the landscape of jobs in VIC but am less sure of other states. The highly coveted, competitive PGY3+ "critical care" resident/SRMO/HMO positions are all opening for application now. At least one of the VIC applications closes as early as this Friday.
While I know a lot about the landscape in VIC, I know very little about other states. Individually trying to research different states and hospital networks without knowing much about them is a poor use of time. I'd like to crowd-source this information, from those in other states who know their state's job landscape quite well. In exchange I'd like to offer everything I know about the VIC job applications.
So here's my proposition:
To those of you who live in states other than VIC, who would like to discuss the application process with me, could you please reach out to me? I'd love to exchange information with you about your state, and share all that I know about the applications in VIC. My hope is that I could help you apply to VIC hospitals, and that you could share knowledge helpful to me to apply interstate.
I'm happy to work this out privately with individuals, or to create a community resource.
To start, please reach out - I'm very keen to hear from you if you're an applicant from another state.
Cheers,

2024.05.13 01:26 chronic314 Backlash, parental alienation syndrome and co-construction

https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Backlash%2c+parental+alienation+syndrome+and+co-construction.-a0179570828
Work on the issue of sexual abuse in children and adolescents lays bare the power relations between genders, generations and social classes. The issue of gender is seen in statistics from UN agencies that report that "one in four girls and one in nine boys will be sexually abused before they reach the age of 18."(1) Generational power relations are clear because the perpetrators are adults, and the power relations of class are evident in the backlash generated by powerful sectors that have attempted to prop up the myth that child abuse is only a problem among the poor and working classes.
Webster's Dictionary defines "backlash" as "a strong adverse reaction to a political or social movement." More plainly, backlash is a negative reaction to a positive and constructive step forward. Professor of law John Myers identifies the positive step as the progress made in the past two decades with regard to child abuse and the backlash as the escalation of criticism against professionals involved in child protection.(2)
David Finkelhor was responsible for pioneering work on the sexual abuse of children in the United States. In his 1979 book, Sexually Victimized Children, Finkelhor recognizes the important contributions of the women's movement and professionals involved in child protection lobbying in drawing attention to the realities of sexual violence against minors: "If the sexual abuse of children has risen to prominence as a social problem rather quickly, it is because it has been championed by an alliance of two constituencies by now rather experienced in the promotion of social problems."(3)
In the United States, a backlash began in the 1980s under the Reagan Administration's return to stale and reactionary values following the struggles of the women's movement and the children's rights movement the 1960s and 70s.
What was once secret was now openly debated, and controversy wracked the most idealized institutions, including church, family and school. Socially consecrated myths of long-standing were crumbling: "The home is the seat of love, support and safety for children"; "Good families don't talk about sexuality"; "Churches reflect the highest moral standard with regard to sexuality"; "Children are safe in school."
By drawing attention to the realities of child sexual abuse, a solid blow was dealt to the "powers that be"; hypocrisy was uncovered; and unquestioned assumptions were challenged. This frontal attack was met with denial by means of a range of strategies developed by the fundamentalisms of faith and the market.
One of these backlash strategists was prominent forensics expert Richard Gardner, who coined the term "parental alienation syndrome" in 1985 to describe a supposed psychological disorder that he had observed in lengthy and bitter custody battles. His original paper on the subject uses the following description:
"The term I prefer to use is parental alienation syndrome. I have introduced this term to refer to a disturbance in which children are obsessed with deprecation and criticism of a parent—denigration that is unjustified and/or exaggerated. The notion that such children are merely 'brainwashed' is narrow."(4)
However, supposedly citing his original work several years later, Gardner re-describes this phenomena somewhat differently.
"[t]he parental alienation syndrome (PAS) is a childhood disorder that arises almost exclusively in the context of child-custody disputes. Its primary manifestation is the child's campaign of denigration against a parent, a campaign that has no justification. It results from the combination of a programming (brainwashing) parent's indoctrinations and the child's own contributions to the vilification of the target parent. When true parental abuse and/or neglect is present, the child's animosity may be justified, and so the parental alienation syndrome explanation for the child's hostility is not applicable."(5)
The two different definitions demonstrate the changes in this argument over time with the goal of developing a different strategy for discrediting the hard research work and harder-won social gains of the women's movement and the professionals lobbying for child protection.
Maria Jose Blanco Barea has studied the many works that Gardner published up to his death by suicide in 2003, and she suggests that "perhaps the psychological causes that led to his suicide should be taken into consideration." With regard to Gardner's professional career, Blanco Barea recounts that "Gardner dedicated the first part of his professional life to working as a forensics expert in cases of sexual abuse brought by children against their parents, students against professors, members of the faithful against representatives of organized religions and within military families. Gardner often stressed that he was a former captain [in the U.S. Army Medical Corps] and as a psychologist treated members of the armed forces who had served in Korea. He specialized in techniques to 'deprogram' U.S. soldiers who had been prisoners of war. His methodologies and expert testimony were used to question the credibility of sexual abuse victims, to prove that the accused were innocent and that the accusers were guilty of perjury. Gardner testified in cases of sexual abuse in the context of hearings to determine custody, visitation and guardianship, and he himself explains that he developed his research over the course of his career. In other words, he directly applied the scientific method of trial and error in real-life court cases that were settled while he was still carrying out his research. When he decided to publish his theories in 1985, Garner failed to provide the scientific community with the necessary data to scientifically analyze his conclusions."(6)
Richard Gardner's books were published by Creative Therapeutics, which he himself owned. Some of his articles were published in Issues in Child Abuse Accusations, a publication of the Institute for Psychological Therapies, which is directed by Dr. Ralph Underwager who is well known for an interview in the Dutch journal Paidika […](7)
In the 1970s and 80s and prior to his publication of the parental alienation syndrome, Gardner developed the "Sex-Abuse Legitimacy Scale" (SAL Scale), which he used in his own courtroom testimony. Nonetheless, Gardner's ideological stance clearly shows that he did not view child sexual abuse as a problem, except when it is denounced.
"It is of interest that of all the ancient peoples it may very well be that the Jews were the only ones who were punitive toward [adults who had sex with children]. Early Christian proscriptions against [adult-child sex] appear to have been derived from the earlier teachings of the Jews, and our present overreaction to [adult-child sex] represents an exaggeration of Judeo-Christian principles and is a significant factor operative in Western society's atypicality with regard to such activities."(8)
"The child might be helped to appreciate the wisdom of Shakespeare's Hamlet, who said, 'Nothing's either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.'"(9)
"And her [the mother's] increased sexuality may lessen the need for her husband to return to their daughter for sexual gratification."(10)
"… except for a certain amount of sexual frustration that was not gratified, the four-year-old had not been significantly traumatized by these encounters."(11)
Elsewhere Gardner had the following to say about child sexual abuse: "The sexually abused child is generally considered to be the victim, though the child may initiate sexual encounters by 'seducing' the adult."(12) Gardner even proposes that [child sexual abuse] serves procreative purposes; he maintains that although the child cannot become pregnant, a child who is drawn into sexual encounters at an early age is likely to become highly sexualized and thus will crave sexual experiences during the prepubertal years. Such a "charged up child" is more likely to transmit his or her genes through his or her progeny at an early age. Gardner states: "The younger the survival machine at the time sexual urges appear, the longer will be the span of procreative capacity, and the greater the likelihood the individual will create more survival machines in the next generation."(13) He also recommended that the incestuous father "has to be helped to appreciate that, even today, it [adult-child sex] is a widespread and accepted practice among literally billions of people. He has to appreciate that in our Western society especially we take a very punitive and moralistic attitude toward such inclinations.… He has also had back [sic] luck with regard to the place and time he was born with regard to social attitudes toward [adult-child esx]."(14)
The two definitions of parental alienation syndrome are interesting because the first reveals that the intention of the original strategy was to minimize the devastating effects that child abuse has in the victims. However, the 2002 definition added: "When true parental abuse and/or neglect is present, the child's animosity may be justified, and so the parental alienation syndrome explanation for the child's hostility is not applicable."(15) But curiously, the indicators of parental alienation syndrome also coincide with the indicators of sexual abuse that have been established by international studies on this problem.
At the time of the revised definition, the international study of child abuse and the movement to prevent the victimization of children was much further advanced. Some examples are the five European seminars "Secrets that Destroy" held in 1998 by the Save the Children Alliance; the 1999 "Vision and Reality" reports that address women's and children's rights; and a series of later publications by experts in the matter.
Although the SAL scale has been widely disregarded as a tool for diagnosing sexual abuse, Gardner's real thoughts are evident in the above citations from his works. Both the SAL scale and parental alienation syndrome represent a scandalous violation of the human rights of women, adolescents and children.
In numerous publications, Gardner uses supposedly scientific but paradoxical arguments to rationalize his denial of violence against women, defined in the Belem do Para Convention as "a manifestation of the historically unequal power relations between women and men."(16) Making use of children, he creates a new and sophisticated form of violence against women that involves complicity of the justice system.
Gardner proposed a series of symptoms that reveal three types of parental alienation syndrome (severe, moderate and mild) and specific treatment for each type. The treatment that he proposes for parental alienation syndrome involves both legal and health-care professionals, who Gardner says should have the power to administer the appropriate treatment based on the coercion, threat, change in living arrangements and, as a last resort, the internment and "deprogramming" of the child. As Blanco Barea observes, "Parental alienation syndrome makes a fraud of the law. It makes use of the declarations against discriminations against women and of the rights of the child to protect the parent and escape the application of the Conference of Vienna that protects against torture and degrading treatment, especially in the case of women and girls, and to escape the application of the Convention on the Rights of the Child."(17)
As law professor John Myers explains, "Gardner is an outspoken critic of certain aspects of the child protection system. Apparently, Gardner believes America is in the throes of mass hysteria over child sexual abuse. He writes that 'sex-abuse hysteria is omnipresent' (True and False Accusations of Child Sex Abuse, 1992, p. xxv). In his 1991 book titled Sex Abuse Hysteria: Salem Witch Trials Revisited, Gardner is harshly critical of an unspecified portion of the mental health professionals, investigators, and prosecutors trying to protect children. For example, Gardner accuses some prosecutors of gratifying their own sexual urges and sadistic tendencies through involvement in sexual abuse cases. […] It seems clear that Richard Gardner cannot claim to be balanced or objective when it comes to allegations of child sexual abuse."(18)
Although Gardner and his theories can be questioned for their misogynist and perverse ideology, in Argentina former family court judge Eduardo Cardenas published "El abuso de las denuncias de abuso" (The Abuse of Claims of Abuse) in La Ley, on September 15, 2000. Cardenas's article supported Gardner's theories and sparked backlash in our country, which has provoked widespread reaction among well-known professionals.
Perhaps the best summary of what occurred in Argentina after 2000 is found in the book Maltrato infantil: Riesgos del compromiso profesional (Child Abuse: The Risks of Professional Commitment), a collection of essays by known specialists on the issue, edited by Silvio Lamberti. As the introduction to this book describes:
"As long as the problem was associated with the lower classes, more and more cases were reported. When it began to be suspected that family violence affected all social classes and the middle and upper classes were scrutinized, a reactionary movement used the guise of good intentions to put limits on professionals that supposedly 'abused the reports of child sexual abuse.'
"This was the reaction of:
  1. Fathers who were engaged in custody battles or other legal disputes regarding visitation rights.
  2. Lawyers who preached equanimity and warned against the feminist bias that they claimed had affected the reports.
  3. Experts who tried to pass off the backlash literature from the U.S. as scientific evidence to support their own conclusions.
"This brutal attack tends to carry into an ideological realm a debate that crosses legal and psychosocial discourses, ethics and society as a whole and tries to undo the advances already gained, discouraging those who have worked to achieve these gains. In short, they intend to:
  1. Discredit reports of child abuse.
  2. Turn anyone who denounces abuse into a suspect.
  3. Blur the boundaries between victim and victimizer.
  4. Confuse the matter by citing the rare cases of violence against boys or adult men committed by women.
  5. Discredit the specialized treatment services even though the law recognizes the value of their diagnosis.
  6. Ignore constitutional norms from the Convention on Rights of the Child.
"Thus, the meaning of abusive conduct is inverted, with abuse being attributed to the person who reports the abuse and requests the fulfillment of the law.
"This reactionary backlash supports the persistence of family violence and condemns all girls and/or victims of the perpetuation of incest and abuse while attempting to stymie the legal system and the work of other professionals who until now have born the heavy burden of this process."(19)
This scientific alert went out over three years ago; nonetheless, today there are increasing obstacles to working on this issue. The notion of false reports of abuse is now firmly rooted in the courts. Sexual abuse trials are tremendous ordeals that seriously damage the children and the adults who report the crime and place a heavy burden on the professionals who take the children's part and who often face accusations of malpractice, libel or slander.
The discrediting of psychological experts is of serious concern. What started with Gardner has continued with followers who have discredited indicators, treatments, techniques and prevention campaigns. Brandishing the concept of co-construction on the part of the family members of the victims or the professionals, the testimony of the children is discredited, accused of being childhood fantasy and tale-telling.
The efforts of Gardner and his followers have been echoed by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, an institution that claims to represent the social sexual moral but which has promoted a policy of smoke-screening sexual abuse.
The Red Latinoamericana de Catolicas por el Derecho a Decidir (Latin American Network of Catholics for the Right to Decide) has undertaken a study on the secret system of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church.(20) The ecclesiastical hierarchy always has been aware of these crimes and has implemented a policy of covering up the abuses committed by priests. This policy is summarized in the following ten points adapted from the studies carried out by the Spanish journalist Pepe Rodriguez(21) and corroborated in the studies of the Catolicas por el Derecho a Decidir:
  1. Discreet investigation of the incident. The prelates of the diocese often have ecclesiastical informants, people who desire to rise in the esteem of the hierarchy through their reports. They keep the bishops abreast of the transgressions of the priests under their authority. These reports are given orally.
  2. Initiation of actions to dissuade the aggressor and/or the victim(s). Once the prelate recognizes the situation of sexual abuse in which the image of the Church could be tarnished, the aggressor is rebuked. Then the bishops dedicate themselves to convincing the victims and their families, assuring them that the aggressor will be punished and that he has repented. They persuade the families to not report the crime so that no one in the Church or the family will suffer the consequences.
  3. Covering up the incident and the identity of the aggressor so the case never becomes public. In this effort, acts are undertaken to confuse the matter, including transferral of the priest to another parish, bribery of the victim and their family members or the use of threats and suspension of benefits (for example, expulsion from school).
  4. Measures to reinforce the cover up. When the case escapes the closed doors of the Church, the hierarch opens an internal investigation against the aggressor to defend against eventual accusations of passivity in case there is external pressure from the media or society or a civil suit. Generally, the investigation is paralyzed indefinitely. At this stage, the priest usually is transferred to another parish, another diocese or another country, depending on the situation.
  5. Denial of the incident when the case becomes public, under the argument that the priest is a man of virtue heeding God's call, a holy figure who could never commit a crime of this nature. When denial is no longer possible, the matter is treated as an exception to this rule.
  6. Public defense of the aggressor, stressing his good service to the Church and his personal merits. If he did do anything wrong, he is profoundly repentant and was not conscious of his acts. An appeal is made to the Christian sentiments of pardoning a repentant sinner.
  7. Public discrediting of the victim(s). Rodriguez uses the metaphor of ants defending an anthill to describe the corporativist attitude of the clergy when one of its members is accused. The guilt is reversed; the victim(s) and/or their family members are blamed.
  8. Paranoiac accusations of the denunciation being linked to campaigns orchestrated by "enemies of the Church." When the number of accusations is so high that discrediting the victims is not enough, the hierarchy complains that there are national or international powers or cults conspiring against the Church.
  9. Possibility of negotiation with the victim. This negotiation frequently occurs before the case is made public when the intention of the Church is to buy the victim's silence to preserve the image of the institution. When there is a public scandal, the hierarchy tries to minimize the damage by trying to negotiate the withdrawal of the accusations against the aggressor.
  10. Protection of the priest/aggressor. When the accused is found to be guilty, the hierarchy stands by him and in some cases even pays him homage or praises him, doing everything possible to erase the incident from the public memory.(22)
As the Church silences and covers up the abuses committed within its institutions, it resembles Gardner and his followers in that it denies the realities of domestic violence and the sexual abuse of children and adolescents and hampers investigation of these matters. Alliances with key judicial figures lead to perverse and scandalous rulings, such as the Melo Pacheco case in Mar del Plata, the Storni case Santa Fe or the stalling in the Grassi trial, to name the most notorious cases. Many others remain anonymous, which demonstrates the existence of a model that favors the impunity of the abusers, the suffering of the victims and the punishment of those who are working within the framework of human rights.
A sturdy thread connects those who deny, discredit, silence, minimize, distort and negotiate the rights of children: the perversity that has subordinated their ethics to systems of belief that are authoritarian, patriarchal and/or favor the domination of adults.
This ideological combination stacks the deck against victims who, for the most part, are children, adolescents and women. Women are the most discredited. In the cases in which priests are accused of sexual abuse, most people take their side, doubt the word of the victim(s) and even blame them or imply that the priests were victims of a conspiracy. Girl victims are not considered credible because they are presented as easily influenced, prone to fantasy or liars. If they are adolescents, their morals are questioned: it is argued that they already had had sexual relations before the abuse or are guilty of seducing their abuser.
In the case of domestic abuse, especially in cases of father-child incest, the mother is accused of maliciously attempting to distance the child from the father, inventing the abuse out of revenge or because she is hysterical or any other argument that serves to safeguard the figure of the father of the family or the Father of the parish. In both cases, the common sensibilities of the population are exploited: tolerance of male sexual behavior fed by the dominate sexual morality, which makes the argument of false reports even more credible than the martyrdom and accusations of the victims.
To compare the consequences that a child may suffer with the separation of his or her parents, even in a messy divorce, with the short- and long-term consequences of father-child abuse is a perverse strategy that denies the serious and profound attack on the victim's subjective integrity, which Jorge Barudy calls "attempted moral murder."
Parental alienation syndrome, the "malicious mother" and co-construction are non-scientific theories, and when used in the context of a trial, they violate the victim's constitutional rights as well as the Convention on the Rights of the Child, CEDAW and other agreements incorporated into our constitution in 1994.
We must remember that Richard Gardner's theories were developed in the United States through a method of trial and error that was applied directly in the courtroom in bitter divorce cases, which were ruled upon as Gardner was undertaking his research. In addition, the U.S. is one of the few countries that has neither ratified nor incorporated into its constitution the Convention on the Rights of the Child or CEDAW.
As Blanco Barea explains, in legal contexts based on human rights, those professionals who can carry out the therapy or treatment recommended by Gardner or his followers (such as "aversion therapy" plus the vicarious treatment of deprogramming and, as a precaution, the guarantee of visitation rights or the reversal of custody and/or total separation of the "alienating" parent and the "alienated" child) "are committing crimes of torture, obstruction of justice and legal fraud, and if they are related to the minors in question, they are also guilty of domestic violence."(23)
Child abuse, especially sexual abuse, is an alarming, universal problem. Increased attention and effective protection skills and prevention measures are necessary at family, local, national and international levels.
After a long tradition of silence, sexual abuse of children is being denounced more frequently and is becoming a topic for public and political discussion.
To alert governments and civil society organizations to the need to play a more active role in the promotion of and respect for the rights of the child (as put forth in article 19 and 34* of the Convention on the Rights of the Child) and to contribute to the prevention of child abuse, the Women's World Summit Foundation, WWSF, launched the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse in 2000. The Day is commemorated every November 19 together with the anniversary of the International Day for the Rights of the Child (November 20). The objective of the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse is to rally around the issue of child abuse and the urgent need for effective prevention programs.
To consolidate the global call for action, in 2001 WWSF launched an international NGO coalition that marks the World Day with appropriate events and activities to focus on and increase prevention education.

2024.05.12 14:59 Eldritch-Nomad Denied Entry To Vic Pol General Info Event.

Hey Everyone,
Just wanted to share my experience with others & hopefully share some stories, hopefully.
A while ago I decided to start investigating new career paths, as I am sick of financial services. Id been doing it for nearly a decade and it makes me feel like a bloodsucker. No matter how I try to be a good representative of the industries by helping anyone in any way I can, insurers are the worst.
So, I've taken a sabbatical and look at some career jobs which would let me give back and help the community
I saw an ad and booked a ticket to attend for a general info night to discuss careers with Vic Police. Shortly after, I was told my ticket had been cancelled due to and I quote the following:
"Upon receiving your booking, we have undertaken a review of your applicant profile/background. Whilst we appreciate you are interested in joining Victoria Police, due to the outcome of your security check you will not be permitted to attend the event.
Based on the above circumstances, we have cancelled your ticket to attend the Information Session."
To elaborate I got in trouble when I was a teen, (17 & 18) and one DUI driving offence, well over a decade ago. (I'm now 37 years old.) I got no convictions for the 17 and 18 year old offences.
Has anyone else experienced this? Seems pretty rough of them to make a decision like this, when I've been trying to be the best person I can be and I'm a completely different person now. Turned my life around and created a new life for myself on the straight and narrow.
Just curious to see if anyone experienced the same thing? Luckily I don't particularly want to be a policeman, it was more due to the fact it matched my career test.
FYI: For any haters, I did my community service, took full responsibility for my actions and have been doing everything I can to be better than the day I was before.

2024.05.11 22:07 currentfso Foreign Service Super FAQ

This is third version of an FAQ first posted several years ago by u/watts52 . The second version, posted by u/brassage is here. The primary changes have been to update links that have changed or are no longer active, and to add a few more resources and recent threads on the existing topics. Primary credit goes to u/watts52, the original poster.
This FAQ covers many common topics discussed on foreignservice . All answers have been pulled from public sources and without any information covered by NDA. Error reports, additions, and clarifications welcome in the comments. (Last update 11 May 2024)

Foreign Service Super FAQ

  1. How do I become a diplomat? How do I work in the foreign service? The best place to learn about this is in the Careers Section of the State Department website. Start here.
  2. What are the differences among FSO, FSS, LNA, CF, CS, and EFM?
  1. Is the Foreign Service the same thing as the State Department? No, the State Department consists of the foreign service (employees who are typically overseas) and the civil service (all other employees who are typically serving in DC). In addition, the term "foreign service" may also include:
  1. Where can I find answers to nearly any question I might have about getting in to the foreign service?
  1. Why should I consider the foreign service? Why not?
FSO Career Tracks / Cones
  1. Which cone is the best fit for me? Take the Career Track Quiz to find out. It's really important for you to pick a track that you have a passion for.
  2. What are the differences among the cones? How do I choose a cone?
  1. Which cone gives me the best chance of getting in? Which cones are hiring the most people right now? It depends on your background and your own desires and motivations, and it depends on the needs of the service. Even if we could tell you which cones are hiring the most people now, the hiring process can take one to three years and things may be different by the time you are eligible to receive a job offer. Do not make the mistake of choosing a cone based on what you think your "chances" are. Too many people make this mistake. If you choose a cone this way, you will probably find yourself in a job you dislike, and you'll have wasted a lot of time and energy "getting in" and you'll be looking for a way to be "getting out." Further discussion here...
  2. Can I change cones? Would it be a good idea to come in as a Consular Officer and later switch to a Political Officer? In theory it's possible to change cones. In practice, it's difficult to do so, and you shouldn't plan on it. Some discussion here.
  3. Can I choose one cone and then simply do out-of-cone work? Maybe, but that's a silly game to play and it's likely counterproductive to your other career and non-career goals. If you are really interested in one cone, choose that one when you apply. Too many applicants attempt to game the system by choosing an "easy" cone with some scheme to actually end up switching to or working in a different cone, but experienced FSOs on this sub have stated repeatedly that such schemes never really work out. That said, there is a lot of variety in foreign service work. Pick a cone that is of interest to you, and you will have plenty of opportunities to serve in different roles. More thoughts here and here.
  4. I have a terrific idea for how to game the cone system that is not listed here. No, you don't. Somebody has already tried it and ended up being sad. Please don't try to game the system - it won't work the way you're hoping it will. Instead, just choose a cone based on your interests, talents, abilities, and passions, and work from there. You'll be happier and more successful in the long run.
Posts, Assignments, and Worldwide Availability
  1. How do post assignments work?
  1. I have an interest in working in country X or at least in a certain region of the world. How can I do that in the foreign service? During your first two tours, you're "directed" meaning you have a restricted list of places you might end up. Beyond that, you'll be responsible for finding your own assignments. It would not be uncommon for someone to develop regional expertise over time, but regional expertise doesn't mean you'd be bouncing between Paris and Geneva for the rest of your career. It's also easier to specialize in bigger countries or regions like the PRC or former Soviet Union than it is to specialize in smaller countries or niche sub-regions like Austria or the Gulf. Further discussion
  2. I have a terrific idea for how to game the assignment system that is not listed here. No, you don't. Somebody has already tried it and ended up being sad. Please don't try to game the system - it won't work the way you're hoping it will. Instead, just be prepared to be "worldwide available" and understand that might mean Paris or Bangui, Caracas or Tashkent, Wellington or Bamako, Tijuana or Toronto. If you are not comfortable with that type of availability, this is not the career for you.
  3. What are the popular or unpopular posts? It depends on the person, on the people you work with at a given post, and on environmental factors, among other things. A lot of people come in imagining they'd love working in a western European capital city only to find the cost of living, culture of the post, personality of their direct supervisor, commute to the office, or some other factor makes life less fun than it would've been if they'd simply visited that same city on vacation. Posts in other parts of the world such as sub-Saharan Africa or central Asia may have tighter-knit expat communities or post culture or better housing options or other benefits that make them more desirable for some people. One person's best post might be another person's worst. Many people on this sub have indicated that they've hated posts they expected to love and loved posts they expected to hate. One frequently mentioned bit of advice on this sub is not to think of Foreign Service posts as you would think of vacation destinations. Here is a good discussion of this topic. And here is a longer discussion of various posts that current or aspiring FSOs either like or don't like for various reasons.
  4. Where can I learn about what life is like at different posts? Try reading these real post reports.
Hiring process
  1. Why does the hiring process seem so opaque/confusing/mysterious/complicated? It's not really opaque, as State tells you exactly what they're looking for in candidates and provides study materials and resources for preparing for each stage. That said, a lot of candidates seem to feel frustrated or confused by the process for a variety of reasons. These may include:
  1. How can I improve my chances of passing?
  1. Approximately what percentage of people pass each of the stages? No one outside State really knows exactly, and numbers can vary from year to year, depending on hiring projections, but based on various reports (example) and conjecture here are some approximate guesses. Feel free to disagree.
  1. How long will it take me to get through the process? Assuming everything goes perfectly, at least a year but possibly much longer. For example: if you take the FSOT today, it will be a couple of months before you get your results. You'll have three weeks to submit your essays to the QEP and then another couple months of waiting. You'll then have to schedule your oral assessment (another 2-4 month wait) and if you pass that, you'll enter the medical and security clearance stage which will take at least 6 months in most cases, but possibly much longer. (Yes, there are anectodal exceptions to all of the above.) You'll then go through final suitability review, which will take anywhere from a week to several months and only at that point will you be on the register. You will then have to wait for hiring to be authorized and to receive an offer. You'll be on the register for 18 months, and if you don't get an offer during that window of time, your candidacy will end. If an offer doesn't come through (or if you fail any of the steps of the process), you'll have to start over by taking the FSOT again the next time you're eligible. So if you take the FSOT today, the best case scenario would be for you to be joining the foreign service a little over a year from now, but a more likely scenario is that you'll be working through this process and doing a lot of waiting for a couple of years or more. Use the time productively - there's no benefit to sitting around and stressing over the what-ifs of State Department hiring.
  2. How can I use my time productively?
  1. What if I fail one of the stages? Then you are human and you've had an experience not unlike ~98% of applicants each year. If you're interested in the foreign service, try again. Some people have taken the test more than ten times and many of today's FSO's were hired on subsequent tries because they persisted and improved themselves each time.
  2. Is there a hiring freeze? Should I wait to apply until after things return to normal? Whether there is a hiring freeze in effect or not doesn't matter. As one person said, "It'll take a long time from test to diplomat, so I don't think the temporal minutia will really matter by the time we're on the register." If you're interested in the Foreign Service, go take the test and get the process started. It's free. Worst case, you fail and you'll take the test another time (which is what you would've done if you had tried to wait out the hiring freeze). But it might be that you succeed and find yourself well-positioned on the register in time for the next big round of hiring.
  3. Is there going to be an A-100 soon? Will [cone] spots be available? How should I interpret the remarks of [important person]? Are they really only going to hire [number] of people this year? I can't deal with the stress! Why are they making me put my life on hold? Why won't they extend my time on the register? How many people will retire/resign/take an early buyout this year? How many Rangel/Pickering fellows are there and what percentage of the jobs will they take? What is the status of [funding legislation in congress]? Does [random thing I read in the news] mean we should expect to see a new A-100 now? Why does FSI have training classes on their schedule if no invites have gone out yet? etc. As an exasperated someone humorously posted on another forum, "Seriously chill. Even if you were provided this information, which isn’t likely, it has no effect on whether there are spots left for you. Enough with trying to predict what happens this year. Wait it out like any job interview."
FSOT - The Foreign Service officer Test
  1. What is the difference between the FSWE and the FSOT? The FSOT is the Foreign Service Officer Test. Its predecessor was the FSWE, the Foreign Service Written Exam, and is no longer administered. You can sign up to take the FSOT here.
  2. What are my chances of passing? There is no way to know without trying. If you're interested, take the test and see how you do. People on this sub won't be able to tell you how you're likely to do, and if you try and fail and then try again, you may find that you perform better and pass the second (or third or fourth) time around. Remember: taking the test is free. (You only have to pay if you sign up and then fail to take the test.) So you have nothing to lose - get out there and give it a go.
  3. How can I prepare?
  1. Where can I find more information about the FSOT? Try the FSOT Frequently Asked Questions on the Pearson site. (Pearson is currently the company that administers the FSOT and some of the subsequent steps of the hiring process.)
QEP - The Qualifications Evaluation Panel
  1. What is the difference between the QEP and the PN's or the PNQ's? People use these acronyms to talk about the same part of the process, even though they mean different things. The QEP is the Qualifications Evaluation Panel, and its job is to evaluate, based on a set of short essays, the likelihood that someone who passed the FSOT will also pass the FSOA. FSOT passers write one essay (a "personal narrative" or "PN") for each of six prompts (each a "personal narrative question" or "PNQ").
  2. When will I know if I made it to the QEP? You will get an email from Pearson a few weeks after the close of the FSOT testing window. Your results will also appear in your online account with Pearson. When you are notified that you made it to the QEP, you will have approximately three weeks to write your essays and submit them through the Pearson interface.
FSOA - The Foreign Service Oral Assessment
  1. Where is the FSOA held? As of May 2024, it is now held virtually, over the course of two days.
  2. When will I know if I made it to the FSOA? You will get an email from Pearson a few weeks after you submit your personal narratives to the QEP. Your results will also appear in your online account with Pearson. When you are notified that you made it to the FSOA, you will have the opportunity to schedule your FSOA date through the Pearson interface.
  3. How can I prepare?
Clearances
  1. What is the process for getting my security clearance?
    1. After you pass the FSOA, you will receive a packet of information describing how this process works. Basically, within 30 days you will fill out a lengthy questionnaire electronically on the e-QIP system. (Read e-QIP FAQs here.)
    2. The e-QIP is the electronic version of the "SF-86," a standard PDF/printable form with essentially the same questions. Although not necessary, some have recommended using a printed SF-86 form to collect all of your responses to the e-QIP and then transcribe them into the electronic system when you are ready. (The e-QIP system does allow you to save and return to work again later.) Start early: many have reported that tracking down all their foreign contacts or previous addresses has taken a long time.
    3. You will wait for a period of time (say between a few days and a few months) and then you will be contacted by an investigator from Diplomatic Security. You will set up an interview with him or her. The investigator will let you know if additional information is required; you can speed up the process by disclosing everything up front. Don't try to hide the negatives; be up front and transparent.
  2. Will X affect my ability to get a clearance? It depends. Here are the guidelines.
  3. What percentage of applicants are denied a security clearance? Only about 0.1% of initial cases, per the 2015 ODNI report. However the report notes State may discontinue security processing due to automatic disqualifiers found during a suitability review before the case reaches the security clearance adjudication phase. These cases are cancelled by Human Resources before security clearance determinations are rendered and are not, therefore, categorized as security clearance denials. {HT: Christabel34}
Register
  1. Where can I find the shadow registers? How can I be added? What is my position on the register? Contact the volunteer maintaining the shadow register for your career track or specialty
Languages
  1. Do I have to know a foreign language to be in the foreign service? No, but if you do know a language well, you will receive bonus points and may be hired before a similarly-qualified candidate without language ability. Also, every new FSO must learn a language within the first few years of service. You are on so-called "language probation" until you have passed the appropriate language exam. FSI will provide the language training for any language-designated position in which you are to serve.
  2. How do language bonus points work? When you pass the FSOA, you will have a score, usually between about 5.3 and 6, though scores can be as high as 7. You will be ranked by score against other people in your cone, and the higher scores will be hired first. So if you have the highest score for your cone. The only way to improve your score (unless you are a veteran) is to pass a language test. Most languages will get you an additional .17 points if you can demonstrate a "general professional proficiency" on the Interagency Language Roundtable Scale. For examples of the level of proficiency you would need, watch these videos. Harder languages that are in higher demand by the State Department can get you either .25 or .38 points. A list of languages for which State offers bonus points is here. And this thread has some excellent advice on languages.
  3. If I speak language X, will I get sent to a post where that language is needed? Not necessarily, unless you received language bonus points for a super critical needs language. In that latter case, you can expect to serve in a position designated for that language at least twice in your career. The super critical needs languages are listed in the bottom table on this page. But if you come in with a fluency in, say, Spanish (which is not a super critical needs language), there is no guarantee that you'll be sent to a Spanish-speaking post.
Life & Work in the Foreign Service
  1. What is it like to find out what your next post will be? Read many flag day stories here.
  2. How does pay work? How is my salary calculated? What allowances do I get? Read this excellent Foreign Service Officer Salary Guide. You can also look up information about various posts, but be advised that the data on this site is not necessarily official and may be out of date.
  3. Will I be required to serve in an unaccompanied post? You are "worldwide available," so in theory it can happen. In practice, there are a lot of people who volunteer to serve in unaccompanied posts for various reasons, and it would be unlikely that you would be forced to serve in one if you didn't want to.
  4. What is it like to be LGBT in the foreign service? Review GLIFAA's website and resources, read read real post reports, which have a specific section for LGBT info, by post and these threads - LGBT, Foreign Commercial Service LGBT, same sex marriage, Robyn McCutcheon's book about her career Foreign Service, including as the first trans FSO.
Will it help/hurt my chances if...
  1. ...I have a graduate degree from a really good school with a high GPA or I have no degree at all? No, it really doesn't matter.
  2. ...I did drugs or committed a crime or did something stupid a long time ago? It could hurt you, but it really depends on what you did, how you dealt with the problem, and what you've been doing since then. Go ahead and apply.
  3. ...I did drugs or committed a crime or did something stupid recently? It could hurt you, and if you're continuing to show poor judgment in life, it's going to be next to impossible for you to join the foreign service. However, no one on this sub will be able to tell you definitively what your outcome is likely to be. Fix whatever it is and try again. You won't know if or how this will affect your candidacy unless you try.
  4. ...I have dual citizenship? Your clearances will take longer, but it's not a deal breaker. Read details here.
  5. **...I have a foreign-born spouse or I have many contacts overseas or I have lived overseas for a long time?**Same answer: your clearances will take longer, but it's not a deal breaker. Read details here and here.
Miscellaneous
  1. What happens after I receive my Orientation offer? Orientation 101 is the initial training class you take when you officially start work in the foreign service. Congratulations! It is a time of a lot of changes. Here is a description of what happens.
  2. How can I become an Ambassador? You probably won't become an ambassador, and it's not worth the brain cycles to try to plan for it. But even if you have the right set of skills, knowledge, and luck through a career spanning many decades and you end up as an ambassador, you will still have spent far more time as a rank-and-file career employee than as an ambassador. So make sure you are interested, first and foremost, in the job and lifestyle of a foreign service officer, which is where you will spend the entirety of your career.
  3. I am outraged over what the President / Secretary / someone else in power just said / did! Nothing wrong with feeling outrage, but what you do with that feeling may matter. And while you may dissent through the appropriate (private) channel, no matter who is in power and no matter who you voted for, your duty as a foreign service officer is to publicly advance the interests of the U.S. As a simplistic example, take a look at who came in first or second in the presidential elections going back ~20 years. Any of them could've been your boss (with small differences in electoral returns for the runners-up, of course): B. Clinton, Dole, Bush, Gore, Kerry, McCain, Obama, Romney, H. Clinton, Trump. Those individuals hold a pretty diverse set of policy views, and the next twenty years of presidential elections will probably result in a similarly diverse list. So if you want to be in the foreign service, think of your job as representing the U.S. regardless of who is in power. If you can see yourself representing the U.S. when person A is in power but not when person B is in power, this may not be the best career for you in the long run.

2024.05.11 06:20 tempmailgenerator Exploring UTF8 Characters in SMTP Display Names

In the complex world of email communication, the nuances of technical standards play a pivotal role in ensuring messages are not only delivered but also displayed correctly across various platforms. One such aspect is the use of special characters within the display name of an email address, a topic that sits at the intersection of SMTP protocols and RFC 5322 guidelines. The introduction of UTF8 encoding has broadened the possibilities for more expressive and diverse display names, accommodating a wide range of international characters and symbols. This advancement, however, raises questions about the legality and compatibility of these characters, especially when they are not quoted within the display name.
The challenge lies in balancing the flexibility of UTF8 encoding with the strict syntax rules established by RFC 5322 for email headers. Unquoted special characters, while offering the potential for more personalized and culturally relevant display names, can introduce ambiguity and compatibility issues. Understanding the legalities and technical requirements of incorporating unquoted UTF8 encoded characters in email display names is crucial for developers and email service providers alike. This not only impacts the technical implementation of email systems but also influences user experience, potentially affecting how email senders are identified and how their messages are received.
Command Description
MAIL FROM: Initiates the email sending process by specifying the sender's address.
RCPT TO: Specifies the recipient's email address.
DATA Begins the transfer of the email body and headers.
UTF-8 Encoding Specifies the character encoding format for supporting a wide range of characters beyond the ASCII set.
Quoted-Printable Encodes special characters in email headers to ensure they are transmitted correctly over SMTP.

Setting Up an Email with Special UTF-8 Characters

Python - smtplib and email libraries
import smtplib from email.mime.text import MIMEText from email.header import Header from email.utils import formataddr sender_email = "example@example.com" receiver_email = "recipient@example.com" subject = "UTF-8 Test Email" body = "This is a test email with UTF-8 encoded characters." # Setting up the MIMEText object with UTF-8 encoding msg = MIMEText(body, "plain", "utf-8") msg['Subject'] = Header(subject, "utf-8") msg['From'] = formataddr((str(Header("Sender Name – é, è, ñ", "utf-8")), sender_email)) msg['To'] = receiver_email # Sending the email with smtplib.SMTP("smtp.example.com", 587) as server: server.starttls() server.login(sender_email, "password") server.sendmail(sender_email, receiver_email, msg.as_string())

Navigating the Complexities of UTF-8 in Email Display Names

The integration of UTF-8 encoded characters in email display names presents a significant advancement in electronic communication, enabling the representation of a vast array of international characters and symbols. This capability is crucial in our increasingly globalized world, where email exchanges cross linguistic and cultural boundaries daily. UTF-8, as a variable-width character encoding system, can encode every character in the Unicode standard, making it the ideal choice for supporting global email communication. However, this flexibility also introduces complexities in compliance with existing email standards, particularly RFC 5322, which outlines the syntax for email messages. While RFC 5322 supports the use of non-ASCII characters in email headers through encoded-word syntax, the nuances of encoding and proper character representation pose challenges for developers and email service providers.
To ensure seamless integration of UTF-8 encoded characters in email display names, it is imperative to understand the specifics of character encoding and the potential for misinterpretation by different mail clients. Misconfigured or improperly encoded characters can lead to issues such as garbled text display, incorrect sender identification, or even email rejection by receiving servers. Therefore, a thorough understanding of MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) standards, alongside SMTP protocols, is essential. MIME extends the format of email messages to support text in character sets other than ASCII, as well as attachments of audio, video, images, and application programs. Adhering to these standards while incorporating UTF-8 encoded characters requires meticulous implementation to ensure compatibility across diverse email clients and to maintain the integrity of international communications.

Understanding UTF-8 in Email Protocols

The intricacies of email protocols and the UTF-8 encoding system present a nuanced landscape for both developers and end-users. At the core of this discussion is the compatibility of UTF-8 encoded characters within the SMTP protocol and, by extension, their adherence to RFC 5322 standards. This intersection is critical because it dictates how email systems handle a wide array of characters beyond the basic ASCII set, allowing for a more inclusive range of linguistic expressions. The adoption of UTF-8 encoding in email display names introduces a layer of complexity, particularly when dealing with special characters that are not traditionally used in email headers. This complexity arises from the need to balance user expressiveness with technical constraints, ensuring that emails are not only accurately rendered but also compliant with existing email transmission and reception protocols.
This balance is further complicated by the necessity for backwards compatibility and the potential for misinterpretation by older email clients that may not fully support UTF-8 encoded characters. Consequently, the legalities surrounding the use of unquoted special characters in RFC 5322 email display names are not just about technical feasibility but also about ensuring a seamless user experience across diverse email platforms. Developers must navigate these challenges by implementing encoding strategies that respect the specifications of RFC 5322 while also embracing the flexibility offered by UTF-8. This careful consideration ensures that emails are delivered and rendered as intended, preserving the richness of global languages and symbols in digital communication.

Frequently Asked Questions About UTF-8 in Emails

  1. Question: Can UTF-8 encoded characters be used in email display names?
  2. Answer: Yes, UTF-8 encoded characters can be used in email display names, but they must be properly encoded to ensure compatibility with various email clients.
  3. Question: Are unquoted special characters allowed in RFC 5322 email display names?
  4. Answer: Unquoted special characters are generally not recommended in RFC 5322 email display names due to potential compatibility issues, though UTF-8 encoding provides mechanisms for their inclusion.
  5. Question: How does UTF-8 encoding affect email deliverability?
  6. Answer: Proper use of UTF-8 encoding should not affect email deliverability, but incorrect encoding can lead to issues with how email addresses are interpreted by servers.
  7. Question: Do all email clients support UTF-8 encoded display names?
  8. Answer: Most modern email clients support UTF-8 encoded display names, but some older clients may have limited or no support, potentially leading to display issues.
  9. Question: How can I ensure my UTF-8 encoded characters are displayed correctly in all email clients?
  10. Answer: Testing emails across different clients and using encoded words syntax for special characters in headers are best practices to ensure correct display.

Wrapping Up the UTF-8 Encoding Journey in Email Communications

The exploration of UTF-8 encoded characters within the realm of SMTP and RFC 5322 guidelines illuminates the intricate dance between advancing technology and established email protocols. As the digital world becomes increasingly global, the significance of embracing a wide array of characters and symbols to represent diverse languages and cultures in email communications cannot be overstated. However, this inclusivity brings forth challenges, notably in ensuring that these characters are accurately rendered and understood across all email platforms. Developers and email service providers are tasked with navigating these complexities, implementing solutions that allow for the rich expression of global languages while adhering to the technical constraints of email protocols. The journey through UTF-8 encoding in emails is a testament to the ongoing effort to bridge communication gaps, promoting a more connected and expressive digital world. As we move forward, the collective aim should be to refine these processes, ensuring that emails remain a reliable and inclusive mode of communication for all users, regardless of language or locale.

2024.05.11 05:35 Street-Set-670 BPT exam pass rates

Are the exam pass rates of the BPT training programs available anywhere? I have done some googling but it seems that this is not something hospitals usually publish. The most I could find was some hospitals saying their results are "excellent" or "above national average". Does anyone know where I should look for some more exact numbers?
As a side question, does anyone have thoughts on how much exam pass rates should play a role in my decision when choosing a BPT program? I'm a current final year med student applying for internship in Victoria (open to going interstate too), and I know some BPT programs tend to heavily favour internal applicants, so I want to intern somewhere I could see myself doing BPT. Should the BPT exam pass rate play a big role in deciding where I want to go?

2024.05.09 08:00 doyouevenlisten Secondary Teaching Post Interview (international candidate)

Hi folks,
I am a history/citizenship secondary teacher in the UK. I applied for a post at a state school in Melbourne/suburb specifically advertising for overseas applicants.
I’ve been offered an interview and the prospect of potentially emigrating seems a little real right now. I just had a few questions I wondered if people wouldn’t mind answering?
  1. It’s about 45 minute drive north of the centre of Melbourne. Would most teachers live in the city of Melbourne itself and drive to commute or live locally to the school? Part of the reason I want to move is to be in the city and near the coast etc. Is a commute of that length (not including traffic obviously) doable in Melbourne?
  2. The interview is 5pm (Victoria time) and so 8am for me. I don’t want to tell my current school I’d need the morning off for an interview as they don’t know I’m applying. Are the school likely to offer an earlier slot?
  3. Are there any tips you’d give for the interview process in order to be best prepared? I’ll be looking at the guidelines etc and standards for teaching in the state to assist me in answering questions effectively.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

2024.05.09 04:03 No_Cartographer1492 For the life of me, I can't read hand range "short hands"

Hi, I'm still learning to play (Texas Hold'em, mainly) and decided to sit down and try to learn hand ranges.
After looking around about what a hand range is, I came across a hand range chart from Automatic Poker. I don't know if they are bad, good or great, but I was trying my first time with a "Range editor" and I can't really make sense of the "short hand" used by that website. First let me reproduce a table with the "pre-flop range chart" and then complain/make my question.

Pre-flop range chart

Early position Middle Position Cut Off Button Small Blind Big Blind
Open Raise 3x: 66,AJT,XQT 2.5x: 55,AT9,XJ9 2.5x: 22,A72,XT8 2x: 22,Ax,X76 2.5x: 22,Ax,X76 Isolate Limpers: 66,AJT,XQT
4-Bet 2.5x: KK+ 2.5x: KK+ 2.5x: QQ+,AK 2.5x: JJ+,AK 2.5x: JJ+,AK
Call 3-bet JJ-QQ,AK TT-QQ,AQ+ 88-JJ,AQ 66-TT,AJT,XQJ 66-TT,AJT,XQJ
3-Bet 3x: KK+,T9s-87s 3x: KK+,T9s-87s 3x: KK+,T9s-87s 4x: KK+,T9s-87s 4x: KK+,T9s-87s
Resteal 3x: QQ,AK,A5s-A2s,T9s-87s 4x: QQ,AK,A5s-A2s,T9s-87s 4x: JJ,AKQ,A5s-A2s,T9s-87s
Call Raise 88-QQ,AQ+ 77-QQ,AQ+ 55-QQ,AQT,XQJ 88-QQ,AQ+ 88-QQ,AQ
Call Steal 44-JJ,AJT,XQT 66-JJ,AT9,XQT 22-TT,AT,XJ9
And then, the author tries to clarify the shorthand coding for the hand ranges, clarification that I fail to understand for the most part:
To save space on the charts, I use a common hand range shorthand. It may take a bit to master, but once you do you will appreciate the simplicity.
Here are the guidelines:
- If applicable, pairs come first. You will either see a single pair, like 66 for example. This means 66+ and includes all pairs from 66 up to AA. If you see a range, like 88-JJ, that means 88, 99, TT, and JJ.
- If you see a single hand listed, it includes both suited and unsuited and all hands greater. For example, X9 is all non-pair hands where the kicker is at least a 9. This would include K9s+, Q9s+, J9s+, T9s+, T9s, K9o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T9o+, and T9o+.
- XJT means all hands with an unsuited kicker Jack or better and all suited hands with a Ten kicker or better. So 55+, ATs+, ATo+, KTs+, KJo+, QTs+, QJo, JTs
I don't understand:
Further clarification of each row usage is given, you can check the landing page for the charts to know more.
Please help me understand, I want to put the ranges in the editor and begin practicing but this short handing thing is a stumble block. Thank you!

2024.05.08 19:25 AbeilleMarketing What I learned from years of burnout and chronic pain

What I learned from years of burnout and chronic pain
In 2017 I fell on my knees. I was going to work, I was late, a lady with large bags was blocking the exit of my carriage on the District line in Victoria station. I stumbled and I fell on both knees, on the choir of a synchronised “Ohhhh” from the other passengers. Somebody picked me up, I didn’t even see who that person was and I was on my feet. So typical English, something I love about this culture, it doesn’t matter how deep you went down, just lift yourself up and you are good as new. Only thing, I wasn’t. At the office both knees started to swell and were very very painful. I called my boyfriend to pick me up. We went to the hospital where nobody found anything wrong, it almost seemed I was inventing the pain. So there started a long battle against the NHS, medications, specialists, transports, cancelling my busy London schedule for the following 6 months, work, sadness, weight gain, etc.
Why did I fall? I didn’t fall because I was late, or because of the cumbersome bags of that lady. I fell because of stress. I had a good job, the team was nice, my boss was cool, the office had showers and lockers, I could cycle to work and get changed there, it was comfortable. But I didn’t want comfort, I wanted challenge! I wanted the excitement of a tough role and this one was boring. My previous job was amazing, I was in charge of two marketing channels at my favourite museum. I loved it there, but I was overworked and underpaid. I had a great mentor, but when she left the new boss clearly hated me, I never understood why. She outright bullied me, pushing me to leave, and I was so tired of working late that I believed all her lies. So instead of reporting her to HR, I ended up accepting a boring job, which anyway lifted my salary by 50%! Less than a month in my new role I had already realised that I was not going to get the experience and the thrill I was looking for, so I started to look around again. For normal people “looking around” probably means checking out Linkedin once a week, but I am a 500% kind of girl, so I started “looking around” night and day. I was calling recruiters during my lunch break, sending applications from the toilet, going to interviews before and after work… It became my second job, much more demanding than the one paying my rent. So I had a boring job, but I was stressed as hell. I was restless, and I fell on my knees.
That was just the beginning The pain was terrible, and doctors were worse, they kept telling me that I was inventing the pain, I hated them for it. I was forced in bed or on crutches, but to them I was hallucinating. Not being able to walk for 6 months really messed me up, my back started to ache, I blocked it several times until only anti-inflammatory injections brought some relief. MRIs were out of the question, over £1000 just for the scan, not counting the specialist’s fee. In the meantime, I changed jobs two or three times, I didn’t like anything, nothing seemed enough. I was hopping around town to attend interviews, swallowing pills, calling cabs because of the pain. It was a nightmare, but I couldn’t stop. My boyfriend kept telling me to let go and settle in any job, but that was only making me more determined. I had no more free time. It was constant anxiety.
Could it be the place? London is a wonderful city, if I had to choose one adjective to describe her, it would be “majestic”. But she’s like a teenager on cocaine, she would take everything from you if you don’t have solid boundaries. In my case, London swallowed my time. I didn’t have any left. I was feeling a tremendous pressure to do more, be more, have more and quickly! I had to be thinner, have more money, a better title, go to events and parties, I HAD TO. I also had to own a property, but the cost of real estate in London is prohibitive, so it was clear that I had to move. My boyfriend - who at that time became my fiance - is French, so we both started to look for openings in France. We liked Italy and Spain too, but nothing came from there. To my surprise, in less than two weeks I got a marketing job in Bordeaux, we were really going to move!
Apnea I moved to France in 2018, the job was complex, it seemed to be the challenge that I was looking for, it was perfect. But my back was a mess, even breathing was hurting. In France I could afford seeing specialists, but some did nothing but pausing my life. I had appointments three times a week, I worked nonstop during the day so I could leave early and see doctors, what a great time. They found two herniated discs in my lower spine, so my connection with the knee injury seemed sci-fi. I was hallucinating again. Almost two years into my new job and I was still unable to spend more than 30 minutes seated without horrible spasms and stabbing pain. I had to lay down, but as it is not possible to do that in an open space in front of everybody, I had to hide in the toilet and rest next to stains of piss and who knows what else. My spirit broke.
Digging deeper and deeper and deeper In January 2020 I woke up with 5 little dots on the side of my right eye. I thought it was spider bites, but a couple of days later I got diagnosed with herpes zoster. My GP forced me home for three weeks, prescribed a ton of pain medications and told me that that was stress crawling out of my body and I had to take a break. I cried so much in front of him. I had no hope, I couldn’t take a break from my body, and my body was in constant pain. I was given the address of an osteopath near home, and the advice to seek psychological help. When I went back to work I had a million things to do, I started feeling that pressure again. My to-do list never actually recovered from those three weeks of sickness.
Like an onion The new osteopath was a magician, we’re still in touch today. He told me that he was going to work on me like an onion, peeling off the layers until we found the source of the pain. We started by talking. I explained my theory of the back pain being caused by the knee injury and he didn't laugh or reply that I was crazy, instead he listened. We talked about all the injuries and the sports of my entire life and then he taught me some exercises to do every day from home. I healed in 2 months. And no, the herniated discs had nothing to do with my pain. Instead, being in bed for 6 months and walking on crutches around London atrophied my muscles. After two years in France I could finally travel the country and go to restaurants and wine bars… ah no wait, covid arrived.
2020 was a good year… I know, covid was terrible, the deaths, the fear, the isolation. But I convinced myself that for me 2020 was great! I healed from chronic back pain, I got married, I finally got to work from home… But I was unquestionably depressed. The past years between work, stress and pain had dug a crack in my soul. I couldn’t recognise myself in the mirror, I felt like an empty husk. On top of that covid made my job a living nightmare. My assistant left, I had millions of extra campaigns every week, tons of new regulations to learn. Many colleagues left, others were fired. That pressure had become a pneumatic hammer in my ears. I started seeing a therapist, an Italian girl more or less my age. I was sceptical initially, I approached therapy like work: a task, a project to complete efficiently and quickly. I found her because I was looking for something fast and effective, and I read about CBT. She accepted me as a patient, and when I asked how long until I was healed she said that since my life was full of pain it would have taken a bit longer than usual. Therapy was like finally someone switched on a light on my darkness, I could see what was happening! And once I understood what was going on I thought I could manage it on my own.
Severing connections, frying circuits 2021 started with a growing feeling of loss. I had just got married, but I was feeling so lonely. All the people I connected with in my almost 3 years in France had moved and my other friends were spread across the globe. To amplify the feeling, in February my grandfather died, and there were no planes for me to go say goodbye or reunite with my family. One morning in March, I switched on my work laptop, began my day and suddenly I saw all white. I thought that it was already some time since I started having this strange symptom: while looking at the screen suddenly my peripheral vision would go blurry and white. And then I realised that actually it was a while since I started having a lot of strange symptoms, from dizziness to urticaria. I wasn’t sleeping much, I had lost a lot of weight, my hands were always shaking, and another long long list of strange feelings including the most unsettling one: not recognising myself in the mirror. I talked with my GP and one year after the herpes zoster he forced me home again, this time for two months, with the taunting diagnosis: burnout. Two months became six and I was not better at all, actually it went worse. Even thinking about work was making me feel sick. The smallest stressor, like a rude lady at the supermarket, could crush me. I started seeing my therapist again. Eventually the company called me and we agreed on me leaving the job. It was not an easy choice, even if I felt relieved once I signed the papers.
My (big) break It happened to me in the past to take time off work, a month, maybe two or even three, but this was going to be epic! I was home already for 6 months, and I had completely lost track of reality. I was living inside a bubble where I wasn’t me and reality didn’t feel real. But the irony in taking a break from your life is that life doesn’t really take a break from you, strangely enough, things keep happening! So during my break I had to transform into an architect to manage the renovation of our new home, bought before the final short-circuit. I also had to become a bit of a lawyer to navigate the different legislations about sick leave, chomage, CPAM money claims, etc. I invented myself as an accountant to figure out why my taxpayer profile didn’t exist. And since there weren’t enough irons on the fire, one of my two cats, Kali, died under a car, so that really helped dig another hole in my heart. In this same period, my husband and I also discovered to have fertility problems, but that’s material for a different article. To sum up, the first year of break was no break at all.
A year and a half off work In summer 2022 something happened: my bubble exploded. Quite suddenly I started remembering things that happened during the previous years that I had completely forgotten. It was like recalling a dream, the timeline was totally mixed-up. But I was finally waking up, I was me again even if that person was someone new. I felt energy coming back, I felt alive and I started planning how to build a new path forward. I met several times with counsellors at Apec and Pole Emploi, and all these appointments highlighted one thing: my career as a marketing employee was over. I had no plans of repeating that sad show of waking up on Monday morning yearning for the weekend to start again. Tests like Myers-Briggs and MAPP showed potential for many different jobs. But I didn’t want to throw away years of studies and work experience, I had to find a compromise, so I went back to the roots. I ended up in marketing because I am a creative person, not an economist. My journey started with website creation and community management, and I really enjoyed that! Also, I didn’t like what marketing per se had become, all the brainwashing and consumerism doesn’t represent me. Bombarding people with ads and slogans disgusts me and I know that many people see it the same way. The foundations for Bee l’Abeille du Marketing started here.
Rewiring It’s been three years since I fried my brain. I’m fine now, but things have changed. Some emotions are not felt the same as before, other feelings are not as clear anymore, I have to think before feeling. But I’m good, I slowed down, I took that break and I can recognise when too much is too much. Rewiring my brain also meant finding another way forward, and I had great help. From my therapist to my GP and the osteopath who listened! Apec was wonderful, they really helped me understand my nature and how to go back being part of society without burning myself out again. I discovered that I could have been an artist! Pole Emploi, Adie and the Bordeaux team at Passerelles et Competences gave me the confidence of launching myself into a new venture. My friends and family, my cat Miso, all participated in my recovery. My husband was so supportive, he is the best of all humans, I couldn’t have made it without him. I realised how stupid I was years before; he was telling me to slow down and I didn’t listen. And when I got hurt, he was there, tending to my shattered spirit. Overall I think I was very lucky: my body shut down, but that forced me to change. Some live in constant anxiety and don’t have this fortune, they just keep going. Also, I had this network of people who helped me even from far away, they felt close despite different cultures and time zones. Thank you.
What helped I am a creative person, but I have a very analytical mind. I need to understand things. So I read a lot of articles, I learned terms such as adrenal fatigue and vagus nerve dysfunction. I came to realise that what happened to me was very tangible, and that it was self-inflicted. Understanding the science behind it helped me recognise that I had to stop feeling guilty about what I was not. No one is perfect and I had to allow the idea that I wasn’t going to be perfect either. So I let go of that pounding pressure that accompanied me for so many years. Not working helped, but I didn’t like it, I felt like a burden to society. So I went from spending 12 hours a day on my laptop to cleaning the house, cooking, tidying up, etc. But that wasn’t healthy either. I pay taxes after all, I can be a burden sometimes! Unfortunately though, I reached the opposite side of that coin. For a while I could not lift myself from bed. At this stage I hated when people around me pushed me to make an effort. But it actually really helped. Little by little I was leaving the house on my own again. CBT worked like magic. It made me understand my feelings and this taught me how to use them, when to listen and when to let them go. I was given tools to associate thoughts and sentiments, to identify and shut down dangerous ideas and live happier. Talking with career consultants highlighted my best skills. I realised that I could do a lot of different jobs and this encouraged me to test myself in different environments and re-discover self-confidence. Painting was another way to let go of the anxiety. Sometimes I would paint non-stop, one subject after the other, just to let out the stress. It was like meditation.
What did not help At the beginning of my journey into disconnectedness I was prescribed medications. Everybody told me that I had nothing to fear, meds were just a little help to go through the worst time. So I tried, for three long days, and then I stopped them when all the possible side effects had come up. I even stopped peeing for one full day, like the most rare side effect of all. I understood that this was a process I had to do on my own, without chemical support. Some of the people around me understood what was happening inside of me, or even if they didn’t, they figured out that I was not well. However, not everyone got it, and I perceived a lot of anger (or perhaps jealousy?) from those who saw me as an opportunist and a liar. I had to prove my condition to a series of specialists, and that really hurt. Every expertise was like going back hundreds of years, falling hard on my butt and having to get up again. Any contact with my previous job was like being stabbed. I had to ask work friends and ex colleagues not to contact me for a while, thankfully they understood.
The lesson In a nutshell that would be “listen-to-husband”, but it is slightly more complex than that. I learned that no matter how strong we think we are, there is always something that could break us. We have to be aware, we have to carefully listen to our body because nature always knows what’s best for us. Our body loves us. I learned that humans are amazing. We have incredible resources within ourselves, we can heal from awful traumas and grow stronger than ever! I learned that work is overrated. Our society incites us to compete and to accumulate items and titles and prestige that taken alone mean absolutely nothing. A walk in the forest is worth millions of “Head of Marketing” positions. I learned that it is never too late to change life. In my journey back to reality, I met people of all ages converting to something new. From 30-something like me to others close to retirement who always wanted to be someone else and they finally decided to make that happen at 62. Follow what you love, and be true about it. Finally, I am still learning this now: time is never lost. Everything happens at once after all, right?

(1) The Company reports non-GAAP measures which include cash costs per silver equivalent ounce produced, cash costs per gold ounce produced, all-in sustaining cost per silver equivalent ounce produced, all-in sustaining cost per gold ounce produced, total production cost per tonne, average realized silver price per silver equivalent ounce sold, average realized gold price per ounce sold, working capital, adjusted EPS and free cash flow. These measures are widely used in the mining industry as a benchmark for performance, but do not have a standardized meaning under the Company's financial reporting framework and the methods used by the Company to calculate such measures may differ from methods used by other companies with similar descriptions. See "Non-GAAP Measures" below for further details of these measures.
FIRST QUARTER FINANCIAL RESULTS
Revenues generated during the quarter totaled $106.0 million compared to $157.0 million in the first quarter of 2023. The decrease in revenue was primarily attributable to a 37% decrease in the total number of payable AgEq ounces sold, resulting from the temporary suspension of mining activities at Jerritt Canyon in March 2023.
The Company realized an average price of $23.72 per AgEq ounce during the first quarter, representing an 8% increase compared to the first quarter of 2023 and a 2% decrease compared to the prior quarter.
Operating cash flows before movements in working capital and taxes in the quarter was $12.6 million compared to $21.9 million in the first quarter of 2023.
The Company reported mine operating earnings of $(0.3) million during the quarter compared to $(6.4) million in the first quarter of 2023. The improvement in mine operating earnings was primarily attributed to a decrease in operating loss of $29.7 million at Jerritt Canyon compared to the first quarter of 2023 following management's decision to temporarily suspend mining activities at Jerritt Canyon in March 2023.
Net earnings for the quarter amounted to $(13.6) million (EPS of $(0.05)) compared to $(100.7) million (EPS of $(0.37)) in the first quarter of 2023. Adjusted net earnings, normalized for non-cash or non-recurring items such as share-based payments, unrealized losses on marketable securities and non-recurring write-downs on mineral inventory for the quarter was $(18.4) million (adjusted EPS of $(0.06)) compared to $0.9 million (adjusted EPS of $0.00) in the first quarter of 2023.
As of March 31, 2024, the Company had a cash and restricted cash balance of $229.3 million consisting of $102.1 million of cash and cash equivalents and $127.2 million of restricted cash.
OPERATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
The table below represents the quarterly operating and cost parameters at each of the Company's three producing mines during the quarter.
https://preview.redd.it/d18xng7t27zc1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf35fc68898cf2a8fdf12e4062f7e62775d9054e

(1) Jerritt Canyon was placed on temporary suspension in March 2023, in-circuit recovery efforts performed in Q1 2024 resulted in production of 647 gold ounces. (2) See "Non-GAAP Financial Measures", below for further details of these measures.
Total production in the first quarter was 5.2 million AgEq ounces consisting of 2.0 million ounces of silver and 35,936 ounces of gold. The Company notes that silver and gold production is aligned with its 2024 guidance production plan and anticipates improvements in H2 2024 due to planned higher ore grades and throughput rates.
Cash cost for the quarter was $15.00 per AgEq ounce, compared to $13.01 per AgEq ounce in the previous quarter. The increase in cash costs per ounce was primarily attributable to a 22% decrease in AgEq production mainly from San Dimas in addition to the impact of the strengthening Mexican Peso. San Dimas production was impacted by reduced ore grades as mine sequencing transitioned from the Jessica and Victoria veins into the Roberta, Robertita and Elias vein systems. Additionally, ore flow and processing rates were impacted by slowdowns by union workers while negotiations on base pay, bonuses and headcount are ongoing and continuing into the second quarter. Management anticipates improved production and efficiencies in H2 2024 which is reflected in the current guidance plan.
AISC in the first quarter was $21.53 per AgEq ounce compared to $18.50 per AgEq ounce in the previous quarter. The 16% increase in AISC was primarily attributable to higher cash costs, lower production, and the continued strength of the Mexican Peso.
Total capital expenditures in the first quarter were $28.2 million, consisting of $13.3 million for underground development, $9.9 million in exploration, and $5.0 million in property, plant and equipment.
Q1 2024 DIVIDEND ANNOUNCEMENT

2024.05.08 12:52 lionbrown CR-1 interview experience in London, UK

Hi all - I benefitted a lot from the posts on this sub, and I wanted to contribute my own experiences too. My wife is a US & NZ citizen, and we submitted my application through consular processing. I'm a New Zealand citizen. My interview was this morning, and it was a good experience.
  1. I-130 submitted - 02 March 2023
  2. Active review - 17 August 2023
  3. Active review 2 - 05 February 2024 (I could see my approval notice that evening)
  4. I-130 approved - 06 February 2024
  5. Transfer to NVC - 11 February 2024
  6. Documentarily Qualified - 04 March 2024 (delays were in getting UK & NZ police reports, and 2023 tax filing)
  7. Interview letter - 29 March 2024
  8. Interview - 08 May 2024 (verbally approved, not updated in CEAC)
All round quick & positive experience with the interview, though with a small moment of stress after my first interview. This is perhaps too detailed, but I benefited from the very long reviews of this consulate when I was preparing.
I was lucky to have received at 08.00 appointment, so there were very few people waiting & I was seen fairly quickly. The embassy is a 10-15 minute walk from Vauxhall tube station (Victoria line & National Rail). I followed Google Maps, which had me walk to the 'Official Entrance' and past that to Consular Services. I recommend bringing some water and maybe a book - there is free WiFi. I completed my medical 16 days prior.
At 07.30 I first went to the US Citizen queue (just after the visa queue) after getting confused from reports on this forum about which line to take. They directed me to the Visa queue, but told me to go directly to the security desk & push in line. It felt uncomfortable to do that, but you need to - there were easily 30 people in line waiting to enter the security queue, which was already 30 people deep too. I told the gentlemen at the desk I was there for an immigrant visa interview, he asked for my DS-260, passport, to confirm my full name and appointment time. He told me that I was too early & to get a coffee from the cafe down the road, and to come back at 07.50 and to skip the queue again.
I had a flat white at Sendero Speciality Coffee, which is within viewing distance of the queue. Excellent coffee, and they have lockers for storing bags if you need it.
At 07.47 I made my way to the security queue desk again, and they took my passport & took me to the front of the queue. Phone & passport in the jacket pocket, through security, if you bring water they ask you to take a sip of it. After that is your check-in for your interview.
I believe this is where the red & blue tents/lines are that are mentioned in other reports. There were two queues - one for US citizens (no one in it), one for non-immigrant visas. The queue was very short so I just waited a few minutes in the non-immigrant visa queue. I was checked in at 07.53, so that's how short it was. If the queue was longer, I would have gone in the blue line (citizens). They checked my DS-260 & passport again, and then assigned me a ticket number with directions where to walk.
Being first thing in the morning & early, there were only a few people in the waiting room. It's well lit, very clean, and the seats were comfortable. At 08.18 my number was called up for the document checking part of the interview. It was completed shortly after at 08.25. I was asked:
I was then asked to provide originals for:
My fingerprints were scanned. I was not asked to provide photocopies, but I had them ready.
The NZ police report is not provided to the individual - it's sent electronically to the US Embassy in Auckland, and the gentleman taking my documents said that it was not in their system. I asked him to double check, given there are reports that the embassy uploads it in the wrong place or with the wrong name sometimes. He went out of sight to look, and then returned a few minutes later saying that they did not receive it from the embassy in Auckland. He was aware that they send it electronically, directly to the embassy. This was bad news to me, and I was drafting up an email to send to the embassy in Auckland and NVC for when I leave. I was then given a document about spousal rights in the US.
At 08.57 I was called up for my second interview. I was very stressed about this one, now knowing that there was no police report for NZ & I was expecting to be denied & sent to administrative processing. I was about to ask the lady if she could again please double check, but she said she'd talk about that later (in a polite way). I was asked:
It was a very casual, very comfortable interview. She was polite but professional. The lady then informed me that the questions were over, and we would now talk about the police report from New Zealand. She managed to find it uploaded in their system - I'm not sure if it was in the wrong place, but after my very stressed 30 minutes of waiting I couldn't have been happier. She told me that we're all done, that I was very prepared with documents, and that she has approved my CR-1. I might have been a little bit too loud celebrating, because everyone in the waiting room looked at me when I was finished. Sorry if you witnessed that - there's not as much privacy in the booths as I had first thought!
I received my original documents back after this interview, but they retained my passport to put the visa in.
I'm now awaiting the confirmation email, and when I can pick up my passport from DX on Chancery Lane.

2024.05.07 06:10 Responsible-Roof9851 Waiting time for healthcare professionals

Hi I just lodged my application for visa 190 in Victoria. I heard that for healthcare professionals the wait time is usually slightly shorter, so was wondering what that would be like based on the experience of those healthcare workers who got their 190 recently.
