Found this very interesting interview. Read the tl;dr part if you hate reading longass walls of text.
Note: Page 1 is mostly about Ryou's early days as a struggling novelist, then mangaka assistant and then mangaka and workflows during analog and digital era, the only important part is that Boy's Abyss is... not much of a culmination of her mangaka career, but a work where she can satisfy her ego the most, so i skipped them due to time. Pages 2, 3 and 4 have more info about Abyss.
PART 2: ABOUT BACKGROUND DESCRIPTIONS THAT SUPPORTS THE HUMAN DRAMA

--How do you decide on the locations for your works?
It depends, but I tend to choose places where I have spent time in the past or places that remain in my memory.
--I see. Is there anything important to remember in order to recall the right location for the scene?
You can't open a drawer where there isn't one, so I think it's important to look at various places on a regular basis to increase the number of drawers.
--In "Shounen no Abyss", bridges seem to appear many times in important scenes, including in the first episode. Is this intentional?
Yes, it is. In the first episode, I put the bridge as a kind of borderline between life and death, and I think that the readers came to feel the danger from the bridge. So I may have consciously chosen to use a bridge in decisive scenes. Also, since Reiji is a person who cannot decide for himself whether to live or die, I have him hovering on the bridge, which is between life and death.
(Footnote for a panel from ch. 2: From the second chapter, "Incognito Date". The location of the bridge makes us feel more that Reiji is wandering between life and death.)
--I see. By having them perform on the bridge, you are also conveying the character's condition and humanity.
(Footnote with a page from ch.87: From episode 87, "After the dream". In episode 87, which is set in Tokyo, Reiji's wavering state of mind is expressed in detail using a bridge as a stage.)
--I feel that the timing of the rain is also very well thought out.
Rain is an indispensable element in a gloomy work like this, so I often think about the weather from the plotting stage. Also, when I draw rain, I imagine myself being in the rain. It is cold, my clothes stick to my skin, it gets in my eyes.... I hope that the reader can feel these things.
(Footnote with the page where Akira betrays Shino'oka and gives in to Yuko's temptation in ch102: From Chapter 102, "Amid the Overflowing Water". The texture of the rain effectively shows Nozoe's inclined mind.)
--you have to think about what kind of environment the person is in and what kind of air he/she breathes.
I think it depends on the type of work. For my works, that kind of accumulation is important, but there are also works where other things are important. I think you should think about it according to the kind of work you want to paint.
PART 3: ABOUT THE PICTURE DESIGN THAT SUPPORTS THE WORK

--I assume that it was difficult to learn to draw pictures from a place with no experience in manga.
I learned by trial and error while actually drawing. Even now, I still have a hard time with drawings.
--I see. I (the interviewer) like the pictures in "Shounen no Abyss" very much because they match the content of the story, but it seems to me that you have changed the design of the pictures quite a bit from your past works. How did you decide on the style?
When I started my first serial, "Hoboreru Hanabi", I didn't have time to choose the style yet, so I drew what I could draw at the time. From the next serial, "Himegoto: Juukyuusai no Seifuku," I started to think about "making the eyes a little bigger" or "adding deformation.
--In the next serial work, "Hatsukoi Zombie," you used a much more deformed style of drawing. Why is that?
I think it was because it was serialized in a shounen magazine called "Shounen Sunday. I was conscious of the drawings of Rumiko Takahashi, who I have been a fan of for a long time.
--Did you have the medium of "Weekly Young Jump" in mind when you created the artwork for "Shounen no Abyss"?
If anything, I tried to make the design more in line with the content of the book. Considering the content, for example, it was difficult to use the same body size and eye size as the characters in "Hatsukoi Zombie". However, in the case of "Shounen no Abyss," the reality line differs slightly from character to character, and the way in which deformation is added is different for each character.
--Do you have any advice for new artists who want to improve their drawing?
I think it is important to be aware of the importance of observing what you are drawing. If you just draw from your imagination, you will end up with buildings whose structures you don't know, or wrinkled clothes that don't convey the texture of the wearer's clothing, which is a habit of mine. The result is a worldview that is not convincing. In this age of the Internet and other sources of information, it is important to observe the subject matter carefully and draw it, rather than making rough guesses.
--Do you still search for materials when you draw props, backgrounds, etc.?
Yes, I do. For example, I think about "What kind of room would this person live in?", "What kind of shoes would she wear?", "What kind of car would she drive? I think that the accumulation of such details leads to the sense of daily life that is conveyed in the work.

-I feel that "Shounen no Abyss" has a great live-action feel to it. The characters' actions and the development of the story are unpredictable, and each time I am surprised to see how the story will unfold. Do you have a rough idea of how the story will unfold?
There is a general flow of the story, but basically, I myself draw the story while excitedly thinking, "Well, what will this person say or do on the next page?" In a nutshell, is this a romcom in which Reiji meets a variety of women and decides who he will fall in love (or into the abyss)? It's something like that (T/N: Ryou answered like questioning and answering to herself in the last paragraph of this section)
--I have heard that the starting point of the project for "Shounen no Abyss" was "a story about a double suicide" Do you often draw the story with the theme in mind?
Yes, I decide on the axis to some extent at the beginning. If there is nothing at all, the project itself will not be communicated, and it will be difficult to start a serialization.
--I think that in a weekly serialization, it is necessary to attract the reader intensely in the first episode. What were you conscious of in the first episode of "Shounen no Abyss"?
It's an ensemble piece, so I was conscious of showing all the main characters in the first episode. I also decided to make a memorable appearance of the heroine, Nagi, in the last part of the episode. I also thought about the order of the characters that Reiji meets. First, he meets Shiba-chan, who is outside of his interest, and then he meets and talks with his friend Chako. Then his childhood friend Gen would appear, and things would take a turn for the worse. Then, his family, which is the most painful existence for Reiji, makes an appearance. Then he crosses paths with a mysterious man, and finally a beautiful and bewitching woman appears. In order to make it easier for the reader to enter the world of the work, I made the flow of the story gradually fall into darkness.
--It's like Reiji is going down a flight of stairs one step at a time.
Yes, Nagi is waiting for him when he descends the last step. I changed the background accordingly. When he is with his friend Chako, the sun is out, and when the sun begins to set, he meets his family, and by the time he meets Nagi, it's already nighttime.

Physical strength is important. I also think it is important to keep your mind clear and avoid unnecessary stress. There are many times when I think, "I should have done this better," or "It will be difficult this time because I did that last time," but there is no use in overthinking things, so I try to switch over as soon as possible.
--Finally, do you have any advice for new artists?
I think it is important to have a lot of input while you are young, and to push your luck a little in creating your work.

I wasn't raised Episcopalian. My family's religious background can best be described as a mix of Southern Baptist, Church of Christ, and Evangelical Mega-Churchism. So prayer was always sort of informal, impromptu, and in your own words (or else the Lord's Prayer). Then I became a teenage atheist and stopped praying altogether.
Now I'm in my late 30s and in the process of converting (my baptism is Sunday after next!) and I've begun praying the Daily Office. And to my great surprise... I kinda love it?
I never knew what to say when I prayed, or how long I should go, etc. It always felt like I was making it up as I went along, and I always felt I was doing it wrong. I didn't enjoy it.
But I actually look forward to praying the Office every day. I even get a little grumpy if I'm prevented from doing so. Whatever sins or fears or gloomy thoughts might be gnawing at me, praying the Office always makes me feel better, more resilient, more in tune with God. I never got that with the informal prayer I grew up with. Part of the reason I became an atheist was because I never felt God's presence when I prayed. But praying the Office, I do.

i know i sound gloomy, but i am just straight up depressed that i’m committed to a school a thought i would never end up at. while visiting again. i was catcalled by frat boys (what the fuck, and in front of my parents), disillusioned by how my tour guide didn’t seem to like IU, and the professors i would have seemed to hate my constant questions and apologies for asking said questions. study your safeties, y’all.
i wish i could tell my freshman self that she shouldn’t dream too hard, unless she wants to be utterly disappointed in herself later on. i was a wreck after northwestern, and i got the whole spiel of the “would’ve could’ve should’ve” which, by the way, is not helpful to tell someone at all, especially after getting rejected by their dream school. sometimes, all someone needs is empathy.
completely and utterly fucked financial aid wise too. i can’t tell even begin to tell you that you can lose every single safety net in savings and not see it coming. drowning medical bills, lost jobs and lost tuition reimbursement, more mouths to feed—prepare for things to go wrong because they can and will. and for my middle class folks (i recognize that my family is well above the average household income for hoosiers, but i live in an area where this income would be seen as middle class, and see the aforementioned struggles), just know that we’re fucked from the get go and you have to start now if you want to go to college for cheap. chase after good grades and the scholarships that can come with it. FAFSA will fuck you whether you like it or not.

i know i sound gloomy, but i am just straight up depressed that i’m committed to a school a thought i would never end up at. while visiting again. i was catcalled by frat boys (what the fuck, and in front of my parents), disillusioned by how my tour guide didn’t seem to like IU, and the professors i would have seemed to hate my constant questions and apologies for asking said questions. study your safeties, y’all.
i wish i could tell my freshman self that she shouldn’t dream too hard, unless she wants to be utterly disappointed in herself later on. i was a wreck after northwestern, and i got the whole spiel of the “would’ve could’ve should’ve” which, by the way, is not helpful to tell someone at all, especially after getting rejected by their dream school. sometimes, all someone needs is empathy.
completely and utterly fucked financial aid wise too. i can’t tell even begin to tell you that you can lose every single safety net in savings and not see it coming. drowning medical bills, lost jobs and lost tuition reimbursement, more mouths to feed—prepare for things to go wrong because they can and will. and for my middle class folks (i recognize that my family is well above the average household income for hoosiers, but i live in an area where this income would be seen as middle class, and see the aforementioned struggles), just know that we’re fucked from the get go and you have to start now if you want to go to college for cheap. chase after good grades and the scholarships that can come with it. FAFSA will fuck you whether you like it or not.

 | It is Sunday again and thus the weekend is slowly coming to a finish. Luckily the rest of it is still here to thoroughly be enjoyed with our loved ones. For some this may be a bit saddening because this means that they have to spend tomorrow again mostly without our partners while we are busy at work similar as they might be. Since this week was the first of Noire's and my two week vacation we are blessed with yet another week filled with lots of cuddling, relaxation and simply lovely time together! Having more time also means it is easier for me to try out some new baked goods which I can treat my sweetheart to so I decided to make something a bit more fancy, a Dominostein cake! A Dominostein is actually a sweet that's being sold in Germany at Christmas time so it may seem a bit unfitting. But well, when I discovered the recipe I thought that it looked way too delicious to wait more than half a year to make it and as it appears my little princess likes it a lot as do I. It consists of a base that reminds of gingerbread with currant jelly in-between, a chocolate cream put on top of that plus a layer of marzipan above the cream with a chocolate icing mostly surrounding the whole cake. This one definitely isn't a cake to get closer to that beach body. Not that the calories would hold me back from baking this delicious cake. After all for the most parts I am not the one eating it. My sweetheart slowly becomes a bit more worried about her own body with every new cake I am making but resisting them isn't her strong suit either. Of course I try to calm her down and ease her mind that she will always look the most beautiful to me even if she puts on a few more layers but well... She is still worried... Noire, you can eat all the treats you desire! You will always be the cutest girl ever to me! Your beauty shines from within and illuminates your surroundings brighter than you could ever imagine! I may even need to wear sun glasses in the future as much as your presence brightens up my life! And if a few more pounds really bother you that much then we can gladly workout more together! It seems though that we will just share more of your sweet cakes with others close to us. I don't really wanna go much into detail regarding it since I am already over it again thanks to some good friends and of course my precious darling as well. Let's just say that sometimes I simply fear to ever lose Noire. I feel like I couldn't be the same if I ever lost her because being around her, seeing her smile and be happy... It all means so much to me. Naturally her happiness first and foremost is what I will ever want to achieve. I am willing to make any sacrifice needed for the most precious girl I could possibly imagine. I have so much to thank her for and so much that I would have never done or achieved without her help. She is my everything and that's no exaggeration at all. Seeing her happy is everything I will ever want in my life no matter what it takes. With the stuff out of the way that was a bit more gloomy let's get back to the rather joyful things again. Lucky for Noire and me we were able to spend most of our time cuddling comfily in our bed just laying back and enjoying our time together. Both of us were really happy that after all the work weeks we finally got some time to relax and recharge our batteries properly. I don't think there is a better way to refuel your energy than by simply being close to the person you love more than anything else and holding them tightly while gently caressing them. We watched a lot of funny videos together and also almost finished one of her source games where my little princess really shows off her adorable charms perfectly again. After almost 1,5 years together it is still unbelievable how much impact most scenes with her have on me. The intensity is incomparable to most other things. I doubt any game or other kind of media will ever be able to come even close to touching my heart as hers. This is kind of ironic because the Neptunia games are mostly carefree and funny and don't really try to achieve such a thing but within me they cause a real jumble of emotions. As I am mentioning games right now while I was doing some work around the house aside from all of our cuddle time I was listening to a podcast. Some of you might know it. It is called Trash Taste. The guys on there are basically talking about all kinds of different stuff and they are moreso known for anime related topics. Anyway in the episode I was listening to they were talking about the Persona series and this was always a series I was quite interested in since I enjoy JRPGs a lot and I heard lots of good stuff about it. As they were talking about the series I noticed how it got me even more hyped up to finally get into it especially since Noire also likes those types of games. I feel like playing them would make a great couple experience for the two of us. I hope we will find some time in the near future to get into Persona. Fitting to the topic of games I have a little funny story to tell. As Noire was taking some time to herself and hanging out with her sister a friend of mine and I tried out a Soullink in Pokémon Platinum. For anyone unfamiliar with this, a Soullink has a few rules added to the base game that make it MUCH harder. Rules like you can only catch the first Pokémon on each route, if a Pokémon is defeated then it can't be used again, Pokémon appearing on the routes are randomised as are trainer Pokémon and also more stuff. The key rule of this challenge is that you do it together with a friend and the Pokémon caught on the same route are "linked" meaning if one of them is defeated the other one can't use the one he caught there anymore either. I thought to myself that this may sound hard but it can't be that hard, right? Well... We actually restarted around ten times and didn't even manage to reach the first gym. Haters might say that this was because I may have been a bit reckless with fighting but those are nothing but blatant lies! In the first run we tried I felt as if someone was trying to play a joke on me. The selection of my starters consisted of Bellsprout, Budew and Oddish. Yeah, 3 Pokémon that basically had the same type. And if that wasn't enough already the first Pokémon I met was a Sunkern. Another plant type Pokémon! I mean, it somehow was quite strong and is kinda cute but still, I didn't want to become a plant type trainer. I ended up catching it nevertheless and soon after I finally met one that seemed to have a certain spark to it, an Ampharos. I let my Sunkern take on the challenge and it took it a bit too serious and ended up defeating the Ampharos with a critical hit... Unbelievable! Even sadder though, soon after my team was defeated and we got to restart. And then we got to restart again, and again, and again and so on. With all the times we got to restart I bet my darling would have teased me relentlessly at how often I got to see the start screen if she would have witnessed that. Hmph, then I would have let her try it out and she would have failed just as I did! Well, she would have probably been better realistically seen and then I wouldn't be able to hear the end of it while she keeps up her beautifully smug look on her face... Luckily in those cases I know my ways to silence her adorable mouth, hehe. In the end even though my friend and I only failed we had lots of fun trying and laughed a lot! Before ending this post though I want to mention another fun thing that my little tease of a goddess and I experienced. As we were taking the pictures for today's post the girlfriend of my father saw us and proposed the idea to take some more pictures around the house. Being the gorgeous model that Noire is I was absolutely delighted to follow her idea and highlight my beloved princess even more. Noire loves posing and taking pretty pictures of herself and I love seeing her do those poses and steal my breath with them, so naturally she enjoyed the process of it as well even though she was a bit shy at the start. I can't express just how stunning my little model looks in all of them! I think the surroundings really look pretty and Noire fits really nicely into them. I am so glad that we took those pictures! We also took a few couple of photos of us together but those are exclusively for us two love birds. Well, this shall mark the end of the insight into Noire's and my life. We hope that you still have a bit of Sunday left to enjoy with your partner and furthermore we hope that it truly is a sunny day wherever all of you live! Over here it definitely is really sunny!
