2024.05.15 08:00 Furrandor-JOLF AITAH for telling my mom not to turn the WiFi off for my oculus and that I don’t want to do her chores….

Now I know that this sounds like I am but I feel like context would help my case. My mom (45 f) can be a wonderful person don’t get me wrong, but she dose things that are really controlling and shity I’m not gonna lie. For example my mom took away my phone (she wouldn’t tell me for how long and it ended up being for three months all because at 17 I had social media and identified as a trans woman still do I’m a MtF transy) and wouldn’t let me contact any of my friends and made me leave the crush that I had at the time on read and they were going through tough times literally couldn’t afford food and I was trying to be there for them my mom knew about this. Three months later I get my phone and friend/crush no longer wanted anything to do with me (witch was hard because she was one of two friends who stayed in contact with me after I moved towns). I told my mom that that’s why I wanted to keep in contact with them and she just said “Oh well I guess she just wasn’t a good friend and didn’t actually care about you.” So that pissed me off and she said I was overreacting and disrespectful for telling her she needed to apologize for saying that.
Anyway back to the thing I was originally talking about. On may 8th was my birthday and I got a Oculus quest 2 and as you can tell by my pfp I’m a furry so what’s the first thing I get? VRCHAT for all the furry avatars because who doesn’t want to be a pink cat running around being goofy. Also on my birthday I got my own phone (I bought it myself so mom can’t control what I do on it) and that’s how I’m posting. I’m also paying rent to live in the house even though I just turned 18 and she just let me get a job for the first time a few months ago. I’m also paying my phone bill by myself because I don’t want her to have any control over what I do with my stuff.
The day before I’m posting this my mom calls me into her room and tells me to get off and that she turned off the WiFi for the oculus. I then tell her “please do not ever ever turn off the WiFi to my stuff” especially since I’m paying rent and it’s my gift she didn’t even get me I feel like it’s a pritty normal thing to ask. (Before I go on she said rent is for me living there WIFI and phone and it $250/month and I’m not complaining about rent being that much and I I agreed to paying rent to get into the swing of adulting.) But she said no and said she’d only turn on the WiFi if I took a shower (witch I was planing on after I was done playing) and then did some chores again for the millionth time and I just got off work a few hours ago. I told her no and that she needed to turn on the WiFi because I pay to be able to use the internet and my quest and she still hasn’t turned it on. AITAH? Side note I’m dyslexic and have ADHD so sorry if I spelled things wrong.

2024.05.15 07:59 Sherrif1c Seeking Advice on Identifying and Extracting PHI/PII from Millions of Unstructured Documents

In my company, we have a project where we need to process millions of unstructured PDF files. These files come in various formats and contain a wide range of content, such as medical invoices, bills, medical records, tax documents, and more. Our goal is to identify which of these PDFs contain PHI (Protected Health Information) or PII (Personally Identifiable Information) and then extract that information.
I've been researching different AWS tools that might help us achieve this, including Textract, Comprehend, Macie, and Bedrock AI, but I'm a bit confused about how to best use these tools together to create an efficient workflow. Here’s what we need help with:
  1. Identifying PDFs with PHI/PII: What is the best process or combination of tools to scan and identify PDFs that contain PHI/PII?
  2. Extracting PHI/PII from Identified PDFs: Once we have identified the relevant PDFs, what is the most effective way to extract the PHI/PII from these documents?
If anyone has experience with similar projects or insights into how to leverage AWS services for this kind of task, your advice would be greatly appreciated. Essentially, what would be the recommended workflow/pipeline to do this task?
Please help.

2024.05.15 07:46 HighStrungHabitat I feel like my therapist made this entire session about herself so idu why she thinks I don’t understand boundaries?

So I’ve been seeing my therapist for two years now, and we haven’t had many issues for the most part. But I have noticed a pattern of my therapist bringing up the topic of power struggles/imbalances, and it always leaves me feeling very confused. For example, a while back after my first dog passed away, I tried to explain to her that it was hard for me to navigate our sessions bc I was so drained, and I asked her if she could help guide me through it by asking direct questions, etc, so it would be less overwhelming. Her response really caught me off guard bc she was acting very defensively and kept talking about power struggles, I felt like she was accusing me of questioning her ability to treat me, all bc i said it was too overwhelming to have the ball thrown entirely in my court every session, and it made me really angry, I felt so invalidated/degraded. That conversation definitely affected my trust in her and overall comfortability in therapy, I didnt feel like it was safe to keep bringing up so I tried to just move on, but as time went on I noticed that since it was never resolved, it was bleeding into the present, bc I stopped feeling like I could be completely honest but never addressed it again. I made the decision recently to bite the bullet and talk to her about it…. it didnt go well.
I am now even more confused and hurt than before bc I don’t understand what I did to warrant my therapist to respond so out of charecter, she is usually such an amazing listener, but today when I was trying to explain the situation, she became extremely defensive before I could even finish what I was saying. She thought I was accusing her of lacking empathy when my dog passed away, and that wasn’t at all what I even said, but she jumped in and snapped at me before I even finished what I was saying. I tried to clarify things, but it became increasingly harder to do so without crying, bc I didn’t understand why she was so frustrated with me. I never once raised my voice, or anything of the short but she just kept saying she didn’t understand and she was confused, no matter how many times I tried to clarify things. She then, once again kept bringing up power struggles, and mentioned that I apparently have this pattern of challenging/questioning her, in a way that isn’t helpful every couple of weeks, and she mentioned this was in her notes.
I seriously don’t get it, how does questioning a therapist automatically mean you are trying to engage in a power struggle? And how is anything I said even questioning her? She also, mentioned feeling devalued, and said that bringing up things from the past is passive agressive even if i don’t feel like it is. I felt like she wasn’t allowing me to have my own thoughts/feelings about any of this, bc even though I tried to clarify what I meant/my intentions, she was still defensive. I feel completely defeated, like no matter what I do it’s just going to lead to what is actually an argument, even though it’s not technically. My therapist always tells me any feedback is good feedback and that no emotions are bad, she won’t personalize anything, etc. But doesn’t her behavior kind of seem like she is taking it personally? bc if she wasn’t, then why is she getting so defensive?
Also, not to mention my therapist knows that I have a hard time confronting something in the moment, due to issues in my family/social life, I’ve sort of been programmed to feel like it’s unsafe to say something in the moment, and it’s better to bring it up later. So to be told it’s passive agressive when she knows why I do it, makes it even more hurtful.
My therapist also randomly brought up the fact that I have resentment issues with healthcare providers bc of past medical neglect, and experience with doctors dismissing me, etc. (I’m chronically ill) and she said it in a way where it was like she was trying to blame my feelings on that, instead of accepting that she had hurt me personally, I felt like I was being gaslit.
But What really struck me, was the fact that she accused me of being passive aggressive and then wouldn’t accept that it wasn’t my intention, but then proceeded to make a passive aggressive comment at the end of our session, about how she wasn’t going to say what she had been thinking bc it “would sound nasty” like exuse me??
I just don’t understand how she could be so frustrated with me for apparently making therapy about her, but then proceeded to make the entire session about how she felt. That’s extremely hypocritical to me and imo comes off like she’s developed a superiority complex, like she can talk about herself when she’s offended and she needs clarification, but when I’m offended and I need clarification, I’m not allowed to ask for it bc then I’m trying to be the therapist. How does that make sense?
I just feel so hurt and invalidated, I’ve been through hell this past year and I’m currently going through the most difficult time in my life, bc I lost my grandpa recently, This definitely didn’t help.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any insight y’all might provide lol, but I just want to say before anyone suggests finding a different therapist, that isn’t going to be helpful. My therapist has been with me through hell and back and she genuinely knows everything about me, things I’ve never even told anyone about. This isn’t the normal at all, I’ve thanked god for her every night bc she’s helped me so much, so her behavior was very out charecter and I want to be able to work things out and talk through it with her. Having to start over when I am in hardcore grief right now, would be a disaster, I don’t have the mental capacity for it, I’ve been considered inpatient treatment bc of how crippling my depression has been, it wouldn’t be a good idea to start over .

2024.05.15 07:38 UhWhateverworks MIL is nuttier than a fruitcake

My husband and I have been married for nearly 8 years and are parents of soon to be 3 young children (I’m due with our last kiddo next month). We are in our early 30s but have known each other since our early teens. We both have established, full time careers, are well educated, etc. We are in many ways what I would say is the suburban modern family. Life is hectic but we also have been very fortunate due to a combination of luck and consistent hard work and good decision making.
My husband’s family is quite the opposite. His dad has worked construction/carpentry since his early teens and been the breadwinner of the family, but has, for the most part, struggled to make ends meet. He is all in all a very charming, kindhearted guy though, and despite our vastly different lifestyles, I genuinely like him.
My MIL…she’s something else. While we have a mostly cordial relationship, she is truly one of the most self-absorbed people I’ve ever met. And not in a malicious manner— she just genuinely is narcissistic and thinks she knows best. Mostly this an annoying nuisance to occasionally deal with. She has said and done some unsavory things in the past that have resulted in short NC periods.
But this mentality ramped up to an 11 on a scale of 1-10 back in late February/early March.
My husband and I were going through an extremely stressful period in our marriage due to a number of issues. I was— and still am— pregnant with our third, we have a 5 and 2 year old, we were both working full time, and my husband’s job kept requiring him to travel out of state for a couple weeks at a time. Running a household as essentially a single mother while working full time was very stressful in itself, but then my grandmother had a stroke while he was out of state. By the time he got back, it was clear she wasn’t going to recover. She died with 48 hours of his return— which had given me just enough time to travel to visit her.
Almost simultaneously, my MIL was diagnosed with CLL. MIL has dealt with recurrent minor illnesses for some time (sinus and ear infections, the flu, etc.), so the cancer diagnosis wasn’t particularly surprising to me. But as most would do, we all spent some time reading up on this particular form of cancer, the general prognosis and treatment, etc.
My own parents happen to have both had cancer. My dad is a stage 2 prostate cancer survivor, having undergone treatment about 15 years ago. My mom unfortunately was not so lucky with her diagnosis— anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid— and from diagnosis to death was less than ten months. It’s been about a decade now. Needless to say, I feel I am fairly well versed in the oncology world for an average person and able to provide some insight on the experience.
CLL, as I understand, and from what I’ve now heard from her original oncologist, is generally not a very aggressive cancer. I have heard some people refer to it as more like autoimmune disorder. It often requires little treatment and more “watchful waiting” of symptoms. My MIL was told by the oncologist that this is exactly what their plan was, that her cancer was not aggressive or requiring treatment, and that she could essentially live a normal life with occasional blood draws for monitoring purposes.
From the moment she was diagnosed though, it has been all about her. Her cancer diagnosis overshadowed my grandma’s actual death. My husband had to be gone for a day and a half to attend her first appointment, even if I was balancing life as a single working mom who was grieving at the moment. Before her first consultation, everyone was sure she was dying, even though it didn’t take an expert to look over her bloodwork and realize that she was likely in a very low stage of this non-aggressive cancer.
When she attended her consultation, her, FIL, SIL, and my husband had to go to support and were relieved to hear the good news. MIL was mortally offended that the oncologist poo-pooed her ridiculous made up, self-enforced diet that had already caused her to lose 10lbs. She’s not a big boned lady, so that was not weight she needed or should be losing. MIL is convinced that homeopathic and naturopathic remedies are the way to go, that “big pharma” is out to get us and make a buck off of our treatment, etc. She quite literally took ivermectin for covid previously, folks. So the fact that an oncologist would tell her that her diet was downright silly pissed her off and she quickly tried to find others more aligned with her viewpoints.
Life resumed more normally for a couple of weeks, but her random “cures” added to her diet and lifestyle have gotten increasingly bizarre and frankly inconvenient for her entire family.
This past weekend, we visited them, and MIL was insistent that she was dying and the next oncologist would recommend chemo for treatment. I fail to see why one oncologist would be so nonchalant about treatment and another would propose aggressive treatment, but I digress. She brought up Dr. Oz, a holistic massage therapist that uses oils and massage to cure cancer, and worst of all, a new item she’s added to her diet— roasted apricot pits. Now if you’re like me, you might be wondering what would possess someone to eat an apricot pit— after all, don’t they have cyanide in them? Precisely. My MIL is intentionally ingesting apricot pits because “cyanide kills cancer.”
As my husband eloquently put it, “No, cyanide kills *everything.”
Today my husband received a phone call asking if he’d be willing to petsit for them this weekend. We have a follow up ultrasound for a small abnormality detected in our baby on Friday, but MIL wants him to drive to their home two hours away and spend the night so he can watch their cat and SIL’s dog. Meanwhile MIL, FIL, and SIL will drive eight hours (and eight hours back) to visit this massage therapist/oil salesman to “cure her cancer.” Mind you, they are using SIL’s car because they have no other vehicle that works well enough to drive that far, they are constantly tight on money, and again, her oncologist has stated she does not need treatment.
I am at a loss. My husband, FIL, and SIL are all frustrated and have come around to the idea that maybe she is being a little over the top finally, but no one is putting their foot down to stop her. SIL is going to drive them instead of just saying no and not letting them take her car. FIL repeatedly drives to the store to pick up whatever weird ass product she wants to try next. And my husband despite having way too much to deal with at home, keeps dropping everything to tend to her.
It is mind boggling obnoxious and honestly in some ways offensive given my family history with cancer. My mom’s diagnosis was death sentence from the get go and she faced it with bravery and tenacity and selflessness. My MIL has a minor health scare and everyone is expected to drop everything to help her.
I am glad my husband is finally seeing reason and logic— but what now? I have told him I strongly believe he needs to speak up and encourage her to follow legitimate medical advice— both for her own good but also to bring himself peace of mind in the long run— but it’s like this woman WANTS to die.
I could go on for hours, but really I’m just wondering how the heck to toe this delicate line of supporting my spouse while prioritizing my family.

2024.05.15 07:01 DocWatson42 The List of Lists/The Master List

My lists are always being updated and expanded when new information comes in—what did I miss or am I unaware of (even if the thread predates my membership in Reddit), and what needs correction? Even (especially) if I get a subreddit or date wrong. That also includes new lists that you think I should create. (Note that, other than the quotation marks, the thread titles are "sic". I only change the quotation marks to match the standard usage (double to single, etc.) when I add my own quotation marks around the threads' titles.)
The lists are in absolute ascending chronological order by the posting date, and if need be the time of the initial post, down to the minute (or second, if required—there are several examples of this). The dates are in DD MMMM YYYY format per personal preference, and times are in US Eastern Time ("ET") since that's how they appear to me, and I'm not going to go to the trouble of converting to another time zone. They are also in twenty-four hour format, as that's what I prefer, and it saves the trouble and confusion of a.m. and p.m. Where the same user posts the same request to different subreddits, I note the user's name in order to indicate that I am aware of the duplication.
I compile my lists manually, from what shows up in my feed. I choose what interests me (thus the low incidence of romance—I'm not a fan of the literary genre, though I'm fine with the theme, and like romantic movies—and of pure horror, and the preponderance of science fiction/fantasy lists, as well as the large portion of nonfiction), and questions that are asked repeatedly.
Thread lengths: longish (50–99 posts)/long (100–199 posts)/very long (200–299 posts)/extremely long (300–399 posts)/huge (400+ posts) (though not all threads are this strictly classified, especially ones before mid?-2023, though I am updating shorter lists as I repost them); they are in lower case to prevent their confusion with the name "Long" and are the first notation after a thread's information.
booklists, the sub that hosted my lists, went private on or before Sunday 29 October 2023, so all of my lists at the time were blocked, though I have another home for them. That's the sub Recommend_A_Book (with one or two exceptions).

2024.05.15 06:57 guccitragique I owe the IRS so much money and I'm not sure how it came down to this? How did you learn how to do taxes?

I use a CPA I pay $400/year for. We don't meet in person, I just send my docs to him. I've never met him in person, just have phone calls. Another freelancer referred me to him in the LA area.
I feel like I would get large returns with him so I kept using him. In 2021 I freelanced at multiple places, some long some short, some overlapping. I keep a spreadsheet of all of my income every year so I'm not sure how this happened but I missed two tax forms.
IRS says I owe $4654. So I pay it, done. Now they've come back and said it's recomputed and I owe $3886 more?
I already paid the IRS $3491 for 2023 for transferring money from my work IRA (layoff), to my Rollover IRA, and into my Roth IRA.
I just feel like every time I make progress on my savings I have to start over. It's been like that for the past 3 years. This year I've only had one contract, I get paid well for LA, and I moved into a friend's house for $800 rent in Pasadena. I'm doing everything to save money and every effort goes to taxes or sudden bills I completely didn't expect.
My dad hasn't been able to work as an uber driver because of chronic pain and my mom is going through the aftermath of a kidney transplant and one of the cysts on her liver popped, so lots of medical bills and blood tests. They're over on the east coast, so I send over money and do what I can.
I guess this has turned into a, why is this happening I don't know what I'm doing type of post. I thought I did. I made a 12 Week Year plan for how much to save every paycheck, wrote goals, calculated how much of my auto loan and student loans will be paid off by EOY. It's like no matter how much I make I'll still feel financially strained by my circumstances.
I'm so frustrated that I want to learn more about taxes and what I'm actually doing. The CPA is $400 because he's also a financial advisor mixed into it but I just don't think he has the time or is that attentive for that. What are some resources to learn taxes? Surely if it were that simple everyone would be their own CPA but I actually am so fed up, I need to learn this stuff.

2024.05.15 06:39 Avocadoyumm I live in California what would happen if I tell HR my boss is bullying me?

I live and work in California, I am an “at will” employee have been at my job for 3 months. My boss and I are the only people in our department, since day one my boss has been giving me work tasks with what at first sounds like 100% of information, when I finish the task, she gets mad that some information is missing. She has said incredibly rude statements to my face along the lines of “you need to calm down” while calmly speaking to her, my she has told me on several occasions how I need to defend my job because there is not enough money in the budget. (This is not true, even though I am new to the job, this position has been in the company for the last 4 years) and she has blamed me for things she has done. I.e A poster design, that she made, wasn’t up to her standards, however she was the one who designed it.
My question is, is bullying and a hostile work environment possibly the same thing?
If I bring this to HR and my boss leaves the company do they have any obligation to keep me at the company even if it’s in a different department?
Would it be easier to find a new job and just not address anything that has been going on? I know 70% of work place harassment isn’t reported and I don’t want to be a statistic. However I have bills to pay.
I have record of some of the issues and statements she has made. There are witnesses from when she yelled at me for things that didn’t require yelling.
Others in the office have had issues with my boss, she has lost money, yelled at hirer ups and has even had a meeting with HR about her behavior in the past.
The person who had my position before me put up with my boss’ behavior for a year and a half. I don’t think I can last that long.

2024.05.15 06:36 drakashgoel1 How can sports injury surgery help athletes recover and return to their sport?

Sports injury surgery plays a crucial role in helping athletes recover and return to their sport by addressing significant injuries that may not heal properly with conservative treatments alone. Here's how it helps:
1. Repairing Damaged Tissues : Surgery can repair torn ligaments, tendons, muscles, and cartilage that are common in sports injuries. For example, procedures like ACL reconstruction can restore stability to the knee after a ligament tear.
2. Restoring Functionality : Surgery aims to restore the normal function of the injured body part. This may involve realigning bones, repairing joints, or removing damaged tissue to allow for proper movement and function.
3. Reducing Pain : By addressing the underlying cause of pain, surgery can provide relief to athletes who have been dealing with chronic pain due to their injury. This enables them to engage in rehabilitation more effectively.
4. Facilitating Rehabilitation : Surgery often precedes a structured rehabilitation program. Surgeons and physical therapists work together to create personalized rehabilitation plans that gradually reintroduce movement, strength training, and sport-specific exercises to rebuild strength and flexibility.
5. Preventing Further Damage : Left untreated, some sports injuries can lead to further damage or complications. Surgery can help prevent these issues by addressing the root cause of the injury and stabilizing the affected area.
6. Expediting Recovery : While surgery itself requires a recovery period, once healed, athletes can often return to their sport more quickly and with better outcomes compared to non-surgical treatments alone. This is especially true for injuries that require immediate stabilization or repair.
7. Improving Long-Term Outcomes : Successful sports injury surgery can have lasting benefits, allowing athletes to resume their sport at pre-injury levels of performance while reducing the risk of future complications or re-injury.
However, it's important to note that surgery is not always the first or only option for sports injuries. Many injuries can be effectively treated with conservative measures such as rest, physical therapy, and medication. The decision to undergo surgery should be made in consultation with medical professionals, taking into account factors such as the severity of the injury, the athlete's goals and expectations, and the potential risks and benefits of surgery.

2024.05.15 06:35 _kaleb_ Me 32M, wife 28F, with child 7 together 11 years married 5. Years of hardship/bad luck, recent affair. LONG story. Advice?

So the last few years have been rough.
*note* if you're a "cheaters will always be cheaters type" tldr is don't bother reading or commenting
BACKSTORY 2019-2023 child nearly annual broken bones, lots of stress and specialist visits.
2018-2024 my wife got her associates as a medical assistant and is almost done with her bachelor's and final quarter internship while working full time and that has been hard for me. The lack of time for me and my son has really made an impact.
2019 I was injured at work and 2020 had my first surgery to try and preserve an ankle joint. That surgery ended up failing and while recovering I ended up mangling 2 fingertips in a wood jointer. 2020 I had to make the transition to a sahd on workers comp and have been since then. My lifestyle of hiking and fishing was upended because I could barely be on my feet 3 hours a day and uneven ground killed me not to mention the whole covid thing was pretty isolating.
All of 2021 was supporting her being a surrogate for a couple in City X (their egg/sperm). So, lots of trips checks and giving her injections. It was kind of proving myself to her because I was terrified when our son was born in 2017 and didn't help as much as I should have. Especially the first 3 months. Really, I didn't find out until later. We had conversations and fights at the time and id step up to do more and she would agree and tell me it was all okay. Then another fight saying I wasn't doing enough/anything and asking more and me being upset and confused. I guess at the time she was afraid to ask more, or tell me what she wanted, or her feelings, and the postpartum depression and initial feelings of abandonment didn't help.
Anyways the surrogacy went okay. I was there and supportive. Rubbing her feet and back. taking on extra load when she was tired etc. And hey I didn't pass out at delivery this time XD The end was a bit hard with 2 inductions needed and a massive 9.5lb baby and a stuck shoulder.
Then a few weeks after birth in November 2021 the nightmare began.
Out of nowhere she started hemorrhaging. She had to have an emergency D&C to stop the bleeding and scans showed a mass. Turned out the surrogate baby's placenta had some cells turn cancerous and attach to her uterus (Choriocarcinoma). 3 months later and the first 3 agent chemo failed, and her numbers were skyrocketing because it turned treatment resistant. They had to hit it with 5 types of chemo (EMACO) leaving future fertility a coin toss but more than a hysterectomy. By May 2022 the tumor marker was gone, but it was 6 months of intense monitoring and 6 months of monthly monitoring. The whole time she was in an intense spiraling depression questioning life. The meaning of all it, and how all her childhood trauma was fair. That no god would let a child live that. And questioning every decision in her life and wondering what things could have been like if she went a different direction. Feeling like she missed out on opportunities early in life. If this might be all there is (we have been together since she was 17). She said she felt like reality wasn't real and this was make believe at times.
Summer 2022 she made a new mom friend. She was pretty toxic and selfish. She used my wife for personal benefit and to go places. Yelled at her kids and treated the oldest from a prior marriage as less than (girl doesn't know her dad and when she mentioned she was part Mexican she freaked out and denied it because of how conservative and anti Mexican her new dad and his family is). Like never offered a dime, but expected food, gas, tickets, and gifts. She drove my wife nuts with that behavior. but she was desperate for a friend and loved her kids. Her friend would just talk shit about her partner pretty constantly and say my wife should be unhappy in her relationship too. Shit talking husbands behind their backs became like a mutual thing and I def hated it
Sometime 2023 she jumped into fantasy romance and fantasy smut /erotica. This progressed to an AI chat smut generator.
May 2023 monitoring was over and she was officially cancer free and had been on a health/mental health quest..
The mental health part started early in the year and she was seeing a therapist for depression and anxiety alone as well as her long list of childhood trauma. Off hand her therapist told her a few times she didn't know maybe just divorce me or something. I was super uncomfortable with this as it was completely outside her practicing scope and I didn't feel she should be providing relationship guidance, especially without me or the rest of the story. I felt a bit attacked and didn't even get the chance to give my perspective or account and felt that is pretty important after being here for a decade. A lot of negative points get omitted by her.
Summer 2023 she had some tough diagnosis for other chronic issues. Narcolepsy Dissociative Identity disorder Depression And a sleep disorder
I initially rejected this as I didn't want to accept these chronic and incurable conditions and insisted it has to be something else, that she's okay. It was taken as rejection of her.
Fall 2023 she reached out to a childhood ex bf a few states away and started an emotional affair. They kept in infrequent contact over the years and nothing ever came of it before. He has been unable to move past her or have meaningful relationships in 13 years. At first he pushed her away and rejected it, but after a month by Nov it was a thing. Texting saying I shouldn't worried because they dated before, but he ended up coming out as gay, calls in private, staying later after work. I gave it the benefit of the doubt but got burned. I found out in December the second time she wanted a private call in the car, and I checked her phone.
We started marriage counseling in Jan and I started my own therapy search as well as a condition of hers. She agreed to no longer contact the boy showed me the sent message ending it and blocked him. By Feb I found him listed in her phone as Saraa and found deleted texts and calls. In therapy she wanted to keep him as a friend and only friend and I tried this. She asked if a PO box would be okay for a birthday present, and I said no. That it crossed a line. It was also super close to Valentine's day. Next therapy I couldn't handle the anxiety and feeling physically ill when she used her phone, and we went through Jan again break off block etc.
In Feb the therapist recommended a separate space for conflict as we work on things. That too much conflict triggered her dissociative identity disorder. It was either a hotel as needed or a rv/camper. My wife was set on a camper and the only way to get a newer one was to add my credit/income to hers for a loan and I was uncomfortable on a $20k purchase. She assured me the intent of the camper was working on us and not separating/divorcing. She brought up me not having chores completely done all the time and I poured myself into it if that was making her unhappy over the years.
During this time in March I found out she got the secret PO box and had yet again resumed texting entirely deleting her logs. She had valentines gifts. birthday gifts, long distance electronic bracelets, and had an easter basket coming. Everything was put together into a box to be gotten rid of. That effort I had for chores and making everything spotless kind of died. Like there was that recognition that that obviously wasn't the problem. We lived completely separately for a few weeks until she could make a choice. We split our son and had almost zero interaction. Eventually she chose and I saw a notebook she used once in December. Basically she has started outlining a story envisioning herself as the lead character in once of her romantic fantasies and cast me and the other man as competing love interests
April and early may there was nothing. We did therapy and tackled our issues slowly. Together. Our future plans: college vs baby and the ticking clock of fertility and ifs after chemo. Etc
Last week she was going out for lilac picking and didn't text me for 2 hours and said she was at the beach. Later she showed me something in her email and I saw discord emails about a pw change and login. One bad gut feeling later and the next morning I see she deleted the discord emails and check our phone plan and her phone and see missing texts. I put in a phone record request for recent texts and text/call logs. She woke up and I said it did it and she said I was disgusting. Then admitted I was right.
She says after breaking it off she was worried he would hurt himself and just wanted to be sure he was okay and admitted to 3 texts and the discord call which i verified. Said that he was in therapy for his issues. She said she didn't want to bring it up to me because I would make it a fight and she thought she could just get away with a few texts to make sure. That she felt responsible for how much he had been hurt too.
So I did what I do with extreme anxiety and checked her work bag. I found an old journal they shared Jan to mid-march. Kind of confirmed again what was going on. Also revealed she lied to me about the trailer, or him? She couldn't get it without me and told him it was to work on separating from me easier. Yeah I kept pics in case this goes downhill because yeah, I'll gun for EVERYTHING. I'm sure that being tricked into signing a $20k contract under false pretenses for her personal benefit, secret po boxes, lying to our therapist repeatedly, secret texts, expecting gifts from the other man, career over spending time with family and a serious personality disorder on top of narcolepsy making a job hard to keep down wont do her favors at divorce/custody hearings.
So its all fresh for me again. I already have extreme anxiety and the autism doesn't help with reading/understanding people the best, although my gut intuition and pattern recognition are catching stuff fine.
WHERE I THINK I AM
Looking back, I can see that the personality disorder and narcolepsy are apparent. Dream delusion and memory issues from the narcolepsy make separating dream from reality hard as well as just recalling what happened. So whether not the "not feeling like reality is real" was a dream delusion or a full-blown dissociative episode... I can also see that messaging him was a "new" personality state. Maybe it's a manifestation of the trauma of nearly dying from cancer, maybe it's a fragment of her young identity that was created to survive her traumatic childhood resurfacing after nearly dying. But her interests and perspective massively shifted at that time and there was a clear separation between her with me and her with him. It was like this regression back to 15. Like she was molding an identity to fit his desires and interests. She took up tarot and witchy books, different music, painting, rockhounding (my interest), dried bouquets, dyed her hair and got multiple piercings. Even getting caught there was that click in her whole demeanor.
I can see how her friend may have jaded her towards me by all the shit she talked about HER husband. I can see that throwing herself into fantasy smut to cope flooded her with portrayals of unrealistic romance. That she progressed that by using an AI smut bot to hold those conversations with. Then she directly tried to process her own reality through the lens of those novels in that journal.
This "relationship" was "I love you, we can be together in 10 years". He wasn't going to leave his cushy job. Or his state. He didn't want to be a stepdad. He didn't want to support her career or have any involvement in it. She couldn't leave my state. Never saw illicit photos. No discussion of sex. It was like exactly what you think some lovestruck preteens would come up with. Like just a fantasy. No talk of bills or finances. Of moving. Of any substantial tangible entanglement.
Somehow that's easier to handle
I love her and don't want to leave her. But i desperately think she needs serious help and have told her I want her to do therapy 2x a month (on top of marriage therapy 2x).
I also think if a secret or deleted text happens again, I've got to take off the kid gloves and fight for it all. Cause well showing up at the dude's door would end in prison.
I'm sure this happening right as I fully got over last time and took a trust leap of faith on a "gay" friend that burned me will make it harder. I get the last few years have been garbage luck and I get almost dying can have profound affects though. She had been utterly loyal for 5 years (believe me I checked as we agreed to ie open book). Tying to see this with an open mind.
I get my exact expectations are muddy and part of this is just putting it into words to process for me, but I value if someone has any good input

2024.05.15 06:21 gilleykelsey Weird Voice Mails TX

I don’t exactly know where to start here. Since turning 18 I’ve had many financial struggles and long story short I have a TON (~70-80k after interest added) of school debt, a bit of medical debt (~3000 from an emergency surgery), and some personal loan debt (~2000). No credit card debt because I’ve never had one and don’t plan on having one.
Needless to say, I get a ton of voicemails from debt collectors and scammers pretending to be debt collectors. So it’s really hard for me to weed out the legit debt collectors. I’m always too afraid to call them back and ID myself in case I screw myself over. Especially since I finally just now started making enough money to just pay all of my regular bills on time. Sometimes I do have to pick between eating for the day and gas in my car but it’s becoming a bit less frequent now. I’m so scared all these debt collectors will sue me for the debt I cannot repay yet before I’m officially “back on my feet” and plunge me back deeper into the hole.
These two recent voice mails I received are concerning in a different way. The voice mail said “This is (Name) calling from the law office of Brett Boylan please return this call when you receive this message.” That’s it. Every other debt collector call I’ve ever gotten has been “This is (Name) calling to speak to (My Name). Please return this call etc”.
I looked them up and they are in fact a real law firm that specializes in “Corporate, Municipal, Elder, Environmental, Estate Planning, Plaintiff’s Negligence Litigation, and Real Estate as well as Trust and Estate administration” (taken directly verbatim from their website). So that further confuses me as to why they have my number and are calling me since it seems they don’t do anything involving debt collection. But I’m not a lawyer so I may be mistaken.
Now, I know legally they probably can’t leave a voice mail detailing what the call is for (I wish they would it would relieve my anxiety a lot) but it’s weird that they didn’t even mention my name.
I’m just worried and so lost. If I barely make enough to pay my bills now how will I ever pay them if they garnish my wages? Should I call this law firm back or does it seem like another scam?

2024.05.15 06:16 superhoffy We need to wake the hell up

Social Media and smartphones are warping how we see the real world and our reality is losing nuance rapidly.
Take the man or bear debate as a recent example. The whole premise is unhelpful and based on a glaring falsehood. It's like a 13-year-old's first essay on a topic they know next to nothing about. I'm pretty sure actual survivors of sexual abuse don't give a single damn about this "dilemma". They have real issues to deal with that those of us who are engaging in this discourse have the privilege of not having to deal with. All this fad is doing is spread the paranoid notion that there are male predators waiting around every other corner. How is that helping survivors of abuse with real trauma and fears that they carry with them in public places on a daily basis? It is absolutely not a show of solidarity to those who have actually suffered, yet people do genuinely believe they are "raising awareness", or "taking a stand".
I mean it's a far-less improbable yet ironic scenario to imagine someone walking the dim city streets at night alone with their necks bent square over their smartphones, going round corners oblivious to their surroundings while texting "I'll take the bear lol". Those same people will say they're afraid to walk alone at night and they yeard for the bear. I made that scenario up, but I've literally seen people bumping into walls and into other people in a smart phone-induced trance and just continuing like nothing happened and I've also seen people gleefully (not ruefully) opt for "the bear". What I mean is a lot of people are claiming to be terrified when they're not.
Like with the Tik-tok trend that's been dangerously telling people they have "high-functioning anxiety" without professional diagnoses, where if everyone is mentally ill then no one is mentally ill1, it also stands to reason that if everyone is afraid, then no one is afraid. It's a dangerous way of "showing solidarity" to let pervade through society. I'm no Jordan Peterson fan, but this is a good example of the dangers of fake solidarity*. It's not just fake; it's damaging.
The whole bear vs man thing just seems to polarise people into two camps who perceive the other either as man-haters or rape-apologists. But you know what? it's not even close to being real and does absolutely nothing to bring people of differing views any closer to understanding each other. I also 100% guarantee you that those who "choose the bear" don't actually practise what they preach in their lives to even the slightest degree. One example I witnessed was at a recent social occasion where a female high school teacher whom I know quite well told her boyfriend and father to ask her if she was alone in the woods, what she would prefer... Before she even said the words "bear", or "man", I knew where where we were heading and intuitively knew what her answer was going to be.
It wasn't a debate from the very beginning. It was more like a joke - a weird joke about sexual assault told in the first person. Before she'd even got to her supposedly mind-blowing punchline (which was, in case you're a bit late to this party, "I'd choose the bear because the bear won't rape me!"), everyone seemed to know what it was going to be. Given the expectant grin on her face when she said these impactful words, It didn't turn out to be the “gotcha” she thought it was going to be. This was quite an awkward experience. I can only guess that the "gotcha" aimed at the men in the room was supposed to educate them to be ashamed to be male on the spot. It didn’t. I explained why I thought the whole thing was flawed and I was informed I needed to lighten up. I was definitely mistaken in thinking that it was a chance to talk philosophy (is it ever these days?), but perpetuating the idea that "male rapists are everywhere" while simultaneously trivialising real suffering of abuse goes completely unchecked because when we engage in this form of discourse we reduce ourselves to vacuous, infantile creatures who ironically think they're acting like fully-developed adults. Rape is light-hearted; yet - and this is where the cognitive disonance gets really odd - you're either standing up for it or you're standing up against it, but no matter what side you're on, it's funny. Instead of thinking, "why is she grinning?!", we're thinking, "what side am I on and how can I also somehow make it funny?". When in reality, it's surface-level shock-value statements with zero nuance that we allow to insincerely represent us (the wide-grinning rape denouncer doesn't practise what she preaches: she isn't a raging man-hater; she's a decent person, but for some reason, she's adopted an inane comic-strip view on something as serious as rape - and incredibly, it's all in the defence of victims!).
And this way of engaging in discourse is everywhere. On Reddit, Facebook, Twitter etc., the finger-pointing and artificial coralling of all of us into fake dualities of misogynist vs virgin-for-life simp, misandrist vs patriachy-enabler, racist vs communist and many others are rife and it's finding its way into real-life discourse at the dinner table, the classroom and the office.
If we artificially and insincerely self-separate into these 1s and 0s, are we making it easier for the A.I. on our devices to "understand" us, classify us, manipulate us and ultimately annihilate us?
OK, maybe I went too far there, but is this jarring lack of nuance really the only way we want to "talk about" serious topics now? Is it only going to get worse? I feel like it wasn't long ago you could have real discussions about issues, but this art is dying - and rapidly. You can probably sense my frustration at how society is organising itself right now and I'd love to know if anyone has any suggestions on what we can do to encourage healthy conversations and debate with each other. Maybe I'm the problem. I used to be surrounded by people who took part in stimulating, nuanced debate and now I'm not. We used to tolerate different viewpoints and we didn't confront and "block" each other on a hair-trigger. Maybe I'm old and the kids are actually all right. Let me know.

2024.05.15 06:15 MostlyLurking6 New US tariffs on "certain" respirators coming?

I just saw this posted on bluesky (RIP twitter), and couldn't find any more information, so was wondering if anyone here knew anything. The respirator info is in this link, way at the bottom under Medical Products:
For certain personal protective equipment (PPE), including certain respirators and face masks, the tariff rates will increase from 0–7.5% to 25% in 2024. Tariffs on rubber medical and surgical gloves will increase from 7.5% to 25% in 2026.
I'm honestly not sure how big a deal this is, as there doesn't seem to be an enumeration of these "certain" face masks and respirators. This could be very minor, and only targeting off-brand respirators made in China that have poor filtration anyway, but it would definitely be nice to know.
Note the news articles about this say the tariffs wouldn't take effect for at least 90 days, so at the very least we have a few months to figure this out and stock up...
Edit to add: OK I found a shred more on this from the US Trade Representative, which says more info -- including public comment instructions -- is coming next week

2024.05.15 06:09 tonyc402 Mom (62) is driving my brother and I up the wall.....Really worried about everything

I dont know if I'm trying to look for answers or just trying to rant but here it goes.
For context, I live in Ontario (Canada).
These past couple of months have been really hard for my brother (34) and I (36). Two months ago, my dad (63) had a hemmoragic stroke. The first few weeks were scary as he couldnt talk and his whole right side was paralyzed. Since then, he has been recovering quite quickly with rehab and is now able to speak ( albeit with difficulties word finding and short term memory issues) and has some mobility on his right leg and arm but still extremely weak that he cannot do much with them. Since then, we have been taking care of our mom who suffers from psychosis, bipolar , depression and diabetes for the past 5 years or so and dad was the one always taking care of her. We are really scared on what the future entails now that this will likely be our new normal. POA for Property and Health is in place and brother and I are now officially appointed.
With our dad still going through rehabilitation, my brother and I have been attending to our mom's needs and their finances, however , it has been a constant struggle. She is extremely needy and cries the freaking blues when there is any kind of inconvenience (most of it caused by her ) such as the fridge going out (she buys an egrigious amount of groceries that she will never finish), the sink garbage dispenser being clogged ( she puts EVERYTHING in it ) and broke it more than once, and now we are getting a text from her that her toilet and shower is clogged (even though we told her she has more than one toilet and shower she can use in the interim). All she cares about is money and that she needs to buy things (her disability pension from her work is quite good, but she spends like it grows on trees and we had to limit her credit card usage and take her debit card away and making sure their bills are paid). We are thinking this is probably a high risk for dementia. Everything seems to be breaking with her being alone ( brother and I have our own place and both live in the same city as our parents)
I dont know what to do and its only been two freaking months of this and im already at my wits end. She CANNOT take care of herself (ironically , she knows to take her diabetic medications consistently) but refuses any other appointsments to help with her mental issues. We are scared that once dad is discharged from the hospital that their living arrangements will need to be changed and seperate, as there is no way mom will have the capacity ,both physically and mentally, to take care of dad (for f*** sake, she didnt even stay 1 hour at the hospital with dad when he first got admitted for his stroke because she said she was tired). Im extremely exhausted as I have my own issues with taking care of my business ,which is not doing so hot, and now helping take care of my dad's business ( we are both in the hospitality industry) but his is very profitable. All my family members tell me to make sure to take care of myself in order for us to take care of our parents. But how the heck can I when I'm being pulled left , right and center in everything. I barely have time for myself personally. My brother is doing as much as he can as well and I am lucky that we have a pretty good relationship and see eye to eye on a lot of things. I feel like at some point I'm going to spiral. Am I complaining too much? am I just weak?
Again , i dont know why im writing this. Maybe looking for others who have had similiar situations. I just want this nightmare to end.

Throwaway for obvious reasons.
My (17F) stepmother "Jane" is a wonderful, wonderful woman. She and my father got married when I was 4, and she's been a rock in my life ever since. My mother was always my primary caregiver, but up until that point her relationship with my father was acrimonious and I basically never saw him. Jane was the reason they developed a stable co-parenting relationship, she encouraged everyone having a good relationship with each other and was always there to support me and my mom when things got rough.
Jane was always a really hard worker. When she met my dad, he was living out of a hotel and my mother was doing everything in her power to keep me away from him because she was petty and angry that their relationship didn't work out. Meanwhile Jane had a great job, a nice house, helped my dad get back on his feet, negotiated a visitation schedule with my mom (who hated her for a long time), and made sure my dad sent us money every week because neither one of them could afford an attorney to negotiate child support payments. Jane had no reason to do any of these things but as I got older she made it clear that she loved me as much as she loved my (half) brothers who were born a few years later. I even have my own room in her house because at the time we lived with my grandparents / various boyfriends of my mom and Jane felt that I needed a more stable environment than that. She's like the opposite of the evil stepmom.
When I was 15, Jane won a big lawsuit against an airline company and got awarded upwards of a million dollars. She used the money to build sizable trust funds for me and my brothers so that we would be taken care of later in life. Despite having a lot more money she still wanted to live a fairly modest life, so she paid off the house she has and has been living there ever since with my dad. Sure she bought a new car and they went on a few nice vacations but she didn't blow all her money on stupid things, which I respected.
About a year ago, things started getting really weird. Whenever I saw Jane she seemed to look sicker and sicker, but no one would tell me or my brothers why even though I know they knew. All we knew is that she was at the hospital a lot. Around the same time, my mom has been coming around my dad a lot more and acting really strange, basically like she was trying to romance him. Whenever Jane was in the hospital my mother would insist on spending the night at their house and playing mom to my brothers, which was so weird to me because she never liked them or Jane. She'd be the perfect little housewife and my mom is NOT like that at all. It was super fake.
Worst of all, my dad started falling for it. I'm not stupid - I'm pretty sure they were sleeping together. I tried to shield my brothers from it but they're not dumb either. I tried talking to my dad too but he insisted it wasn't like that.
Then a few weeks ago, my mom started talking about all the places she'd like to visit, how she wanted a new car and was looking to invest... which is weird because my mom has been a bartender her whole life and has lived paycheck to paycheck since before I was born. She was acting like she was about to get a lot of money, which started to make me really suspicious. Between Jane being sick and my mom acting all nouveau riche, I had a lot of questions.
Finally I decided to visit Jane in the hospital and ask her about my trust fund. I found out that if anything happened to her, that my dad would inherit all the money including full control of the trusts for me and my brothers. She asked me why I was so interested in the trust fund so I told her what's going on with my parents and how my mom has been acting with my dad. I didn't want to but after everything she did for me, she deserved the truth. It really hurt me to break her heart like that, especially once I found out that she was basically in hospice at this point because of irreversible kidney failure. She's only got a few more months. We both cried so much.
Then, two days ago everything came to a head. My mom stormed in furious and started arguing with my dad. Apparently Jane met with her lawyer and changed the trust so that my dad would get nothing and all of the trusts would be controlled by my step-aunt. She demanded to know how Jane found out about their relationship and I came out and told them that I told Jane everything. I told them that if they wanted to play stupid games they would win stupid prizes and that I wasn't going to let them screw Jane over after all the help she gave my family when she didn't have to.
My mom slapped me and my dad just looked so defeated. Then my mom told my dad that she didn't really love him, that she was just pretending to so he would marry her and she could get all of the money. The worst part about it is that my brothers witnessed the whole thing and now on top of their mom dying they have to deal with a cheating dad and his vindictive ex. Our whole family is in ruins and I feel like it's my fault even though I know it's not.
Yesterday I visited Jane again and told her about the fallout. She apologized and said that she had to dissolve my trust fund to make sure my mother didn't get a hold of the money, but that as "her oldest" I will inherit the house/property after she is gone and that's worth more than the other two trust funds combined. My father won't get anything because she's going to divorce him before she dies, and honestly I'm happy for her. She made me promise to take care of my brothers and told me that once I turn 18 this summer I can kick my dad out of the house if I want to. And I FULLY plan to do that btw.
I haven't talked to my dad since and I can't even look at my mom. I can't believe they would conspire to do this to Jane after all this time. Just proof that they deserve each other and I'm embarrassed that they're my parents. Once I turn 18 I'm going to cut my dad out as much as I can and cut my mom out completely. I hope she rots. Meanwhile I'm going to try and be at the hospital as much as I can until Jane passes away.
Anyways. I just needed to vent. I'm really messed up about the whole thing and I feel super betrayed, although I can't even begin to imagine how Jane feels. I'm gonna be so f-ed up when she dies. I can't even think about that right now. But at least she's not surrounded by people who just want to bring her down.
Thanks for reading.
Edit: Some people are asking a lot of the same stuff so I'll just clarify here --
My brothers - My plan is to use some of the estate money fight for guardianship for my twin brothers so that they can live in the house while I kick my dad out. If I can't get guardianship then I will have to let my dad stay in the house. However once I turn 18 I will technically be an adult so even if my dad leaves I'm still legally able to be responsible for them. The only thing I won't be able to do is stop him from taking them if he leaves. But they will be 18 in six years so even if they do have to leave they will always be able to come back whenever they want. In a perfect world my dad would just leave and let my brothers stay with me which I'm sure my bio-mom would be very supportive of because right now she hates all of us and I doubt that will change anytime soon.
The trust - from what I understand, my brothers will inherit 1/3 each of the estate and the remaining 1/3 will be used to keep the house running until they turn 18. After that it will be up to me if I want to keep the house or sell it. At that point my brothers will still have money left in the trust so they can branch out or do whatever they want, otherwise I will not sell the house and just pass it on to them or keep it and maintain it myself and they can just stay with me as long as they need to.
(Edit to the edit) So I just spoke to Jane and she told me that the reason she dissolved the trust is because originally it was going to be split 3x between us kids and my dad would inherit the house. She dissolved my 3rd and switched it over to make it to take care of the house maintenance, and instead put the house in my name so my dad wouldn't get it. Plus by doing that at least financially I would be getting a much bigger share (the house is worth about 1.5x the amount of my brothers trusts) I just wouldn't be able to do anything with it until my brothers are 18, which I'm totally cool with. Sorry if I don't have a better answer but I'm just trying to translate what she told me.
My parents - The big fight happened on Sunday and I haven't spoken to either of my parents since, I think they're both at my mom's place right now but that's fine with us because we're all still mad at them so they can stay gone for all we care. I know technically that's not legal to just leave us alone but I've been taking care of my brothers for over a year I can handle a few days while he gets his shit together. Screw both of them.
Hope that clears some stuff up.
TLDR; My bio parents tried to screw my terminally ill stepmother out of trust fund money, but she caught on and now no one on my side of the family gets anything.
Additional Information from OOP on her parents, stepmom’s health, trust funds
OOP: (Why isn't Jane on dialysis) - I don't remember the exact details but Jane has a genetic condition where she gets cysts on her kidney. She already had a transplant a few years ago but now she developed problems with her arteries or something in her legs so she doesn't qualify for dialysis. She could get another transplant but she doesn't want to because the last time was so traumatic (rejections, etc). So she decided to just let herself go onto maintenance medications to prolong her death until she gets her affairs in order. She has a few other health problems that make the typical treatments really dangerous and according to her she'd rather die surrounded by loved ones than on an operating table.
(Dissolving the trust fund) - Jane told me she didn't technically have to do it, but she didn't trust my bio parents not to do something shady and get a hold of the money before I turn 18. Even if my aunt controlled the fund my dad would still be able to collect if something happened to Jane before I turn 18. Her lawyer suggested it's better safe than sorry and I agreed that it was the best option. I'm not an expert tho I don't know the details.
(How my mom knew) - Like I said before I'm pretty sure Jane told my dad, who then told my mom and that's how the argument started. I can't think of any other way and I didn't really care enough to ask.
(Jane's thoughts on my mom) - she didn't know my mom was doing all of that. My mom has her own place and would only come over whenever Jane was in the hospital for a few days at a time. I've been living with my dad for a little over a year so he probably told Jane that my mom was there to spend time with me, if he told her at all. Besides she didn't "move in" until a few months ago, which I guess is when they started hatching their plan. Jane never outright banned my mom from visiting so there really wasn't anything she could do.
Hope that helps.
Edit for the last part: The remainder of the money belonging to the estate that hasn't been put into trusts for my brothers is going to be used to maintain the house (utilities, taxes, etc) until my brothers are 18 and then I can either choose to sell the house or keep it and maintain it myself if I'm able to. I plan to go to school in that time and get a better job with the goal of keeping the house, but if I can't then I have the option to sell it. Not that I will but that's how it was explained to me.
OOP on her stepmom and their relationship, provides thoughts on her bio mom
OOP: Honestly it's because she's more of a "real" mom than my actual mom.
My bio mom is kind of ambiguous about my existence but Jane was always extra involved, sending me to sports teams and paying for dance classes and just showing interest in my hobbies as I got older. Plus as the only girl I think we bonded on a level she can't with my brothers so she always made sure to let me know I was on equal terms with them. When I was younger we would watch movies and have girl time where it was just us 1:1 and those are some of my best memories with her.
Jane is also really mature and someone I wanna be like when I get older whereas it feels like my mom is a teenager in an adult's body. She was constantly picking fights with my dad about dumb things and Jane was always there to smooth things over and keep my best interest at heart over her own feelings. I know my mom made Jane's life really difficult for a long time but Jane never complained or said anything to me about it whereas my mom CONSTANTLY complained about Jane. As I got older I just always felt more at peace when I was around Jane than when I was around my mom.
If you want your step kids to love you just be there for them and treat them like your own. Ignore whatever drama you have with your husbands ex and just love your kids. Trust me if you really care about them they will know.

mattdvs1979: My only advice is make sure you work with a lawyer once she passes so you get your inheritance and your parents can’t try to intervene, and then you keep your promise to use that money for you and your brothers’ welfare.
OOP: Oh absolutely, Jane already gave me the lawyer's info and between him and my step-aunt I'm sure I will be able to do what I need to do for them. I don't even care about the money, most people don't have trust funds and turn out just fine. I'm actually more glad that she gave me the house because you can be damn sure it's going to be a safe space for my brothers whether I end up getting custody of them or not. My brothers are basically Jane's legacy so my goal is to give them the life and guidance that I got from her, and that they won't get because she'll be gone.
OOP on the relationship between her father and her stepmom before they got exposed
OOP: Honestly it hurts a lot because before Jane got sick they seemed to have the perfect relationship. Until my birthgiver (I like that) came in and fucked everything up with her toxic personality. Honestly in a perfect world my mom will end up broke and alone and in a shitty nursing home with bed sores. And when she calls me and begs me for a relationship (because she needs the attention) it'll feel so good to hang up on her over and over again.
OOP on Jane (stepmom)’s health and if Jane is mentally okay on the whole situation
OOP: I think so. Apparently it's a genetic disease so she always knew she was going to get sick she just didn't know when so mentally I think she was prepared for it. I just hope that she can find peace knowing the truth and knowing that I'll be there to make sure her sons don't grow up all fucked up.
OOP on her brothers getting therapy to deal with their mom/step-mom’s health and her imminent death
OOP: Yeah. I've already sat them down and talked to them about what's going on, they seem to understand but they're understandably really sad about the whole thing. I told them that when they go to school they should ask about a grief counselor and I'm trying to get their health insurance info from Jane so I can find them a therapist for kids. As much as all of this sucks I think it's brought the three of us a lot closer together.
Thanks a lot. I really love my brothers and I know it's my job to take care of them properly now that they won't have a mom around. Jane did so much to raise me and my brothers won't have the opportunity so it's only right that I help them.
Since finding all of this out my plan has always been to have my brothers live with me, I'm already in charge of taking care of them and the house for the most part the only thing my dad does is help pay the bills. Unfortunately I won't be able to kick my dad out as long as he's their legal guardian which is why I'm trying to find some other solution to that. But if/when that gets resolved he can live under a bridge for all I care.

Update: May 8, 2024 (3 months later)
Please check my profile for my previous post. :)
Hi guys it’s me again, a lot of you asked me for an update on my situation with Jane and my family so I’ve come back with a few things that have happened since I initially posted. I will try to organize this in a way that addresses the major points of last time.
Jane is still alive and doing surprisingly well considering the circumstances. She’s always been a fighter and although her disease has been progressing she’s keeping a positive attitude with everything that is going on. She says she’s grateful that she was able to see everyone’s true colors before she passed so she could go into the next life knowing the truth. We have become so unbelievably close in the past few months and it’s getting harder and harder to know that she’s getting close to the end. She doesn’t ever talk about it though and I know it’s because she doesn’t want to hurt me but we both know the situation so we’re just making the best of our time. I'm also not being completely transparent about all of the drama at home but tbh I don't think she needs to hear all of that.
We did end up having that surprise celebration of life that I planned, a lot more people showed up than I thought but they all got an airbnb near the hospital where Jane is and we were able to take her out and spend some time at the lake near the facility. It was super lowkey which I know Jane preferred and I was even able to get her old college friend to come after I found him on Linkedin lol. We had food and there was music and we played games and it was overall a really great time, except Jane started crying at the end but she promised me it was just because she was grateful.
My brothers are also doing okay, my aunt (Jane's sister) is currently paying for them to go to therapy and they've become a lot more open about talking about the situation. They just turned 13 but a lot of the time it feels like I'm talking to actual adults lol. They've become really independent lately (in a good way) and aside from me driving them places I don't really have to do much for them anymore. Their grades aren't super great but they're not failing and considering the circumstances it could be a lot worse. They still hang out with friends and I'm keeping an eye out for like depression symptoms and stuff.
The situation with my mom is as funny as it is embarrassing tbh. She spent a few weeks ignoring us and then she tried to crawl back into my life basically begging me to let her move in because her lease is about to expire and she has nowhere to go. That convo went about as well as you'd think and she ended up calling me an ungrateful b**** and that I couldn't just ignore her because she's my mom. I told her to get out of the house before I call the cops and to go back to my dad (who at that point was only coming home every few days to "check on us" and grab some clothes.)
After that she tried coming by a few times and when I wouldn't open the door she would lose her mind and start yelling through the neighborhood. After three instances of this I finally called the cops but because I'm 17 they told me there's a possibility that I would have to go home with her since technically I'm a minor and need to be with the custodial parent. I told them no way because I was the only one watching my brothers atm. That led to a whole thing where after a few hours my dad basically showed up and I was allowed to stay there because there was finally an adult present and I'd basically lived there for over a year.
After that the cops firmly told my mom that if she keeps showing up and causing drama (my neighbors confirmed that she'd been there a few times screaming) that they would arrest her for trespassing since technically it was Jane's house and not hers. She left and hasn't tried coming to the house anymore but for a while she would call me constantly telling me I owed her and all kinds of stuff. She's now blocked on everything and anything she needs to say to me gets filtered through my dad.
As for my dad... well, since he's basically required to be here for another 2 months until I turn 18 we've basically just avoided each other. It's not too bad though because I've been heavily relying on guilting him for everything to get my way. For example he was going to contest the divorce but I threatened to kick him out when I turn 18 if he does that so he just signed all the paperwork for a "quickie divorce" and is basically doing whatever Jane tells him to do. I don't openly disrespect him or anything (he's still my dad) but I've made it clear that I have no intentions on doing anything he says ever again and he doesn't fight me on it. Most of the time he's just in his room and sometimes he'll go back to my mom's but only for a day or two before they argue and she kicks him out again lol. I haven't decided whether or not I'll kick him out yet and we haven't talked about it either so I'm kind of playing it by ear.
As for me, I'm handling everything as good as I can. I found a new job where I make a little more money so I've been focusing on saving as much as I can and just being there for my brothers. Between working and school and visiting Jane I've been so busy I haven't really had time to really stop and think about everything, but I know it'll come. One of my friends has really stepped up and helped me manage everything and I'm super grateful to him for being there for me and my brothers so we'll see how that goes.
Anyways I wish I had something more exciting to share but that's what's happened since my last post :) Thanks again for all the support on my last post.

OOP on the possibility of her stepmom being poisoned from her parents to get Jane’s money
OOP: Hi there,
A few people have mentioned this and yes we are absolutely certain she is not being poisoned, it’s a genetic disease causing her kidney failure and we have known about it for a long time but she shielded us from the worst of it hence why her “sudden” decline in health was such a shock to us, we thought she had more time.
My brothers have also been screened for this disease and thankfully neither of them have it.
Edit to add: I’m turning 18 in a few weeks so I don’t need to get emancipated and my dad has already agreed that my brothers will stay in the house with me because they have nowhere else to go.
OOP on Jane making video clips for her brothers
OOP: Yes actually a few people suggested this on my last post and we have been doing this for a few weeks now. Jane has a little digital recorder that she’s been putting her thoughts down on and she’s also written a few letters to us for major milestones. My brothers do not know about this as we want to surprise them but that said they have been coming to the hospital more now that they’re in therapy and able to deal with it. I know they do not want to have any regrets even though it’s a difficult situation.
OOP on her father after being exposed and her bio mom trying to manipulate him
OOP: I do think he’s remorseful, he hasn’t said it but the way he’s acting is telling me that, he’s being really passive when normally he gets a little belligerent if he really feels like he didn’t do anything wrong. Also I know I have every reason to kick him out but he’s still my dad even tho what he did to Jane was terrible. He’s just kind of a weak minded person and my bio mom really manipulated the crap out of him and continues to manipulate him but I can tell he’s getting tired of her BS because he’s spending less time with her.
He didn’t know she was showing up at the house and when he found out he was super pissed at her, they’ve been fighting nonstop and I can tell he’s not as much under her spell anymore because he’s at home more but who knows.

Saying It with Flowers: Why Graduation Bouquets Matter
As graduation season approaches, the air is filled with excitement and anticipation. It's a time of celebration, achievement, and new beginnings. One tradition that has stood the test of time is the giving of graduation bouquets. These floral arrangements symbolize more than just a gift; they are a heartfelt expression of pride, love, and support for the graduate. In this article, we'll explore why graduation bouquets matter and how they can make a meaningful impact on this special occasion.

The Symbolism of Graduation Bouquets

Flowers have long been used to convey messages and emotions. In the context of graduations, bouquets symbolize growth, accomplishment, and the start of a new chapter. They are a tangible representation of the graduate's hard work and dedication, making them a thoughtful and meaningful gift.
Different flowers also carry their own symbolism. For example, roses are often associated with love and admiration, making them a popular choice for graduation bouquets. Lilies symbolize new beginnings and purity, while daisies represent innocence and joy. By choosing flowers that convey a specific message, you can personalize the bouquet to reflect the graduate's journey and aspirations.

Types of Graduation Bouquets

Graduation bouquets come in various styles, ranging from traditional to modern and creative. Traditional bouquets typically feature a mix of flowers in a classic arrangement. They are timeless and elegant, making them a popular choice for graduation ceremonies.
On the other hand, modern and creative bouquets offer a fresh take on the traditional arrangement. They may incorporate unique flowers, colors, and textures, creating a stunning visual impact. These bouquets are perfect for graduates who want to stand out and make a statement on their special day.

Choosing the Right Bouquet

When selecting a graduation bouquet, it's crucial to keep the graduate's preferences and the event in mind. Consider their favorite flowers, colors, and styles. Purchasing from online retailers or local shops is an option, with online retailers offering perks like same-day delivery. Floral Garage Singapore is a notable example, offering a wide variety of flowers to suit your budget. Additionally, think about the theme of the graduation ceremony or party to select a bouquet that complements the overall decor.
If you're unsure, you can never go wrong with a classic bouquet of roses or a mix of seasonal flowers. These timeless arrangements are always a hit and are sure to be appreciated by the graduate.

DIY Graduation Bouquets

For those who want to add a personal touch to their gift, consider making a DIY graduation bouquet. Not only is it a fun and creative project, but it also allows you to tailor the bouquet to the graduate's tastes and preferences.
To make a simple bouquet, start by choosing a variety of flowers in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Arrange them in your hand, starting with the largest flowers in the center and gradually adding smaller flowers around them. Once you're happy with the arrangement, secure the stems with floral tape and wrap them in a ribbon for a finishing touch.

Popular Flowers for Graduation Bouquets

Some of the most popular flowers for graduation bouquets include roses, lilies, and daisies. Roses are a classic choice that symbolize love and admiration. They come in a variety of colors, each carrying its own meaning. For example, red roses symbolize love and passion, while yellow roses represent friendship and joy.
Lilies are another popular choice for graduation bouquets. They symbolize new beginnings and the transition to a new chapter in life. Lilies are elegant and beautiful, making them a perfect choice for a graduation bouquet.
Daisies are a symbol of innocence and joy, making them a cheerful addition to any bouquet. They are perfect for adding a pop of color and a touch of whimsy to the arrangement.

Graduation Bouquets for Different Personalities

When choosing a graduation bouquet, consider the graduate's personality and preferences. For example, if they are romantic at heart, a bouquet of red roses would be a perfect choice. If they are more laid-back and casual, a simple bouquet of wildflowers might be more appropriate.
You can also incorporate personal touches into the bouquet to make it even more special. Consider adding a handwritten note or a small keepsake, such as a graduation cap charm or a personalized ribbon, to add a personal touch to the gift.

The Impact of Graduation Bouquets

Receiving a graduation bouquet can have a profound impact on the graduate. It is a tangible reminder of their hard work and achievements, and it can serve as a source of motivation as they embark on the next chapter of their life.
Graduation bouquets also create lasting memories. The sight and smell of the flowers will remind the graduates of their special day for years to come, serving as a symbol of the love and support they received from their friends and family.
In conclusion, graduation bouquets are more than just a gift; they are a meaningful gesture that conveys love, pride, and support. Whether you choose a traditional bouquet or a modern arrangement, the sentiment behind the gift remains the same. So, as you celebrate this momentous occasion, consider saying it with flowers and making a lasting impact on the graduate's life.

2024.05.15 05:54 SecretDrag My friend says I rant too much

I’ll keep it as short as I can, but essentially, I have a friend who is very sensitive to aggression due to RSD and ASD.
A few months back, he had mentioned that he feels “turned off” by our friendship when I complain about things or vent. He perceives it as aggression and it stresses him out. I never had any issues with him, or pinned any blame on him for any of my issues of course… I also wasn’t much of a complainer, but here and there I sprinkled in some rant-worthy topics to kickstart a conversation. But anyways, I was asked to stop complaining about things, so I did.
LATELY though, he had been really up and at it with his own complaints about life, so I perceived it as the open door to continue sharing my qualms with day to day stuff. For example, I made a negative remark about how the person ahead of me in a line of ten people was paying for their medication in all quarters. I texted my friend while waiting for this person to pay for their things, saying something like, “come on, someone ahead of me is paying in quarters. UGH!” Then later on in the day, my SO did something that bothered me, and I brought it up to, again, just have a conversation. Both times I “ranted”—which by the way were 1 line sentences, and nothing more— my friend acted very sullen and withdrawn, not really responding to what I said.
A day later, he hits me with, ‘remember how I said I hate it when you rant?’ And I explained that, well, he’d been ranting a lot too so I thought it was an invitation, if not fair for me to reciprocate. Kind of like mutual support. And, in fact, I was very wrong about that, and now we aren’t really talking because I’m really fkin tired of it not being a two way street.
I’m constantly a positive force in his life, providing feedback that makes him feel better, and when I’m feeling down and don’t really want to talk, he gets sullen instead of perhaps… giving back some of the sunshine I shared with him. Then when he asks what my problem is, and I share just a sliver of MY day to day issues, he gets up in arms about it! Like I’ve really done him wrong by opening up. There’s no winning it feels like. I’ve told him that I’m sorry for the inconvenience, sometimes I just want someone to tell me, “let it roll of your shoulders”. I want that pep talk that makes me forget the little issues I have in that moment. I guess it’s too hard to ask for.
