This is late, but my friend and I went to the for-your-consideration event for RWRB. It was a trip.
But it was a work function first. Members of the TV Academy—and their plus-ones, if they received one—gathered in a studio in the sweaty belly button of Hollywood. If you were a normal Angeleno like u/sixfivesteve (the friend), you sat in your car blasting the AC while the valet line bumped forward one car length at a time. If you were from a walking city, you pushed past the slow-moving tourists, hoped the flies circling a mysterious stench didn’t lay eggs on you, and checked in with an attendant who wore a concerning amount of black for someone whose job was to stand in direct sun.
There was a (life-changing) screening of the movie, a panel, and a reception. There was also retail politics. Here’s what happened.

Whoever put together the playlist knew what they were doing

The vibe before the screening was jolly. There was a whole bathroom conversation about 1) therapeutic cannabis, because you’ve gotta, and 2) people everyone has run into.
Ushers handed out mini-servings of popcorn that felt stingy as hell but were probably just nutritionist-recommended serving sizes. Steve grabbed candy and water that came in slightly less environmentally disastrous packaging than the stuff you’d get from most grocery stores.
Whoever put together the playlist had done their homework. This is where I tell you that the event featured strip club music, by which I mean they played “Pony” by Ginuwine. Before and after the screening. It was as if whoever set up the playlist knew that some attendees’ brains—and bits—might explode, reconstitute themselves, and implode again under stimulus (i.e. the movie), work event be damned.

The screening was a case for seeing movies in theaters for the sound. Because…

Something else I’d seen but never before heard while watching the movie in home setups: Bea says “no!” when Henry declines Alex’s call in the meeting with Philip, Tommy, and other palace staff. She doesn’t just mouth it.
Her interjection interrupts Philip mid-sentence, who glares at her and says, “As I was saying…”
It’s also just fun to hear the audience’s reactions. Some of the laugh lines:
  • “You’ve been wanting him to dick you down for years.”
  • “How many guys have you been with?” “Whoa.”
  • “He is. 😏” An audience member let out a sound like a hyena choking itself with a belt.
  • “I’m down.”
  • “I mean, who says ‘make love’ anymore? Are we gonna listen to Lana del Rey while we do it?” You guys, he said do it. Because I'm twelve.
  • “The B in LGBTQ is not a silent letter.” Man, politicians’ kids must hear all kinds of pamphlet-speak at home.
  • “Little lord fuckleroy.” Sarah Shahi is going from lesbian icon to overall queer icon with this role. Zahra/Sarah got massive applause during the end credits.
  • “We have got to get you a book on English history.”
Somehow no one laughed about Stephen Fry’s pronunciation of homosexual. Hummusseggsual. It’s hummus but it’s also seggs-ual.
Speaking of sexual, the crowd held its breath during the sex scenes.
Emmy voters have watched plenty of sex scenes with their colleagues, but after the bravely-repressing-a-wobble acknowledgement of I owe you an explanation, after ~very bad things~ in Alex's room, after the phrase make love—which deserves to be not just roasted but incinerated—the Paris sex scene was…relief? Revel? Revelation?
Look at me trying to talk around the effect the scene (may have) had on the room. People were off-gassing oxytocin. Estradiol. Testosterone. Since it was a work event, the weight and texture of the hush was what you’d get if everyone on a group camping trip was trying to discreetly watch porn. (To paraphrase the dad from Easy A, high-end porn—for governors and athletes—but porn nonetheless.) But I project.

That Rachel Hilson was lithe and and fresh-faced and ready for any cosmetics campaign you threw at her—which, incidentally, has always described Uma Thurman? That Matthew López was extremely cute? That Greg Berlanti was the dad/uncle some of your friends wanted as a mentor and others had wholesome crushes on? That Sarah Schechter was the friend’s cool older sister made good? That if you put the RWRB cast into an early Almodóvar movie, the result would be credible?
Whatever I can say about the panel, you can get more straightforward coverage and footage of it elsewhere, including this subreddit. (Check out the post from the woman who got so horny from watching the movie that she started going after her husband nonstop.) I did a search on Tumblr for “RWRB FYC panel” for you. You’ll get Galitzine saying “the throes of love.” You’ll get TZP talking about matcha. You’ll get Casey McQuiston—that perfectly cast nonbinary creator-god of the RWRB universe—describing their brush with psychological collapse when TZP tried to have a conversation with them while in costume as Alex Claremont-Diaz. Enjoy.

The campaign trail is paved with selfies

Campaigning for nominations—and eventually, awards—is not so different from running for public office. The panel ended and everyone was set loose on the panelists and the “immersive for-your-consideration experience.” (Sure.)
Getting to the cater waiters to pinch mini-tacos, meh crabcakes, fish and chips with tartar sauce instead of vinegar (why?), and tiny cake cubes was like wading upstream. The crowd was moving in the opposite direction. Why?
…oh.
Galitzine was taking photos with people. Elsewhere in the immersive whositwhatsit, TZP was doing the same thing with a swarm of his own.

I’d thought they were on display during the panel, but no. This was what they were there for. They were there to shake hands, talk shop briefly—with occasional promises to follow up later—and take selfies. The reward for all this would (theoretically) be nominations and votes. This was a campaign stop. On-theme for RWRB. Cue montage of Alex Claremont-Diaz making fundraising calls.
Can you get a charley horse in your face? I bet the actors had them, but that’s campaign life. Forward Together and all that.
Matthew López and the producers wandered the floor. At one point, I heard Casey McQuiston tell a small group about how they didn’t have any particular in with agents or publishers. It often is about flinging yourself out there, whatever you want to do.

A vote for RWRB is a vote for softness (stop reading here to avoid egghead content)

While we’re speaking in campaign terms, who and what is RWRB for? It’s for people who love love. It’s for people who love fun—who are fun, dammit. It’s for people with uomosexual tendencies (uomo = Italian for “man”). It’s for the occasional lucky straight guy. Most of all, it’s a refuge from straight-guy culture.
Here’s what I mean. The two RWRB panels and the Roast of Tom Brady happened in the same week-long time frame. If you’re reading this, you’re almost definitely in the tank with RWRB. The Roast is straight-guy culture cranked up to eleventy billion by comparison.
If we go by the Roast, straight-guy culture looks like big men the color of medium-rare steak yelling dick jokes from the dais—but using the less funny and more aggressive and self-regarding “cock” instead. It looks like Gronk pretending he can’t read and using Kim Kardashian’s genitalia to make a beef pun. It looks like Nikki Glaser, the token straight-woman comedian, being a good sport while the men in attendance called her ugly.
Don’t get me wrong. I watched and laughed. A good dick joke takes skill, and some of them were damn good. I even thought Julian Edelman was hot for 20 minutes. But the tonal difference between the Roast and the RWRB event—to say nothing of RWRB itself—was jarring. Straight-guy masculine culture is so committed to not being soft. Don’t go soft is basically its motto.
Meanwhile, RWRB is about—among other things—softness. Henry Car-Crash-of-Last-Names gives the object of his attraction the up-and-down, but in a way that’s more endearing than objectifying. He doesn’t do the hard stare. He’s all-in on Byron, Austen, Zadie Smith, and…Streisand. Unlike Gronk, Henry can read, and he reads with relish.
So does Alex, of course. The American is sweet and proactive. When he develops feelings for a friend with (many) benefits, he’s matter-of-fact about it and doesn’t get defensive or evade his emotions.
In other words, Alex and Henry’s masculinity is soft. Soft masculinity acknowledges the dimensions of a person beyond how well they can slam into other men (sporty or sexual) or women (sexual). For a lot of people, soft masculinity is a fantasy and a gift.
It can be a gift to anyone. Look at Steve. He finds that version of masculinity intoxicating, even as someone who’s already a winner of the masculinity lottery, at least as defined by large parts of straight-guy culture. He’s white and tall and strong and has hoes (houses), not in every area code—sorry, rappers who talk about that kind of thing—but some good ones. He loves RWRB. Everything about it. (Lest you thirsty beasts start having big thoughts about him, he’s married.)
Steve even inserted himself into the height contest/debate Galitzine and TZP sometimes have for lulz. He had a “you’re wearing lifts” conversation of his own. Not with TZP. With Galitzine, who joked about wearing lifts himself. It was still not enough to top Steve. (How funny would it be if this is when I reveal that Steve is Conan O’Brien? To be clear, he’s not. Besides, Conan O’Brien is sixfourconan.)

The next night, while Steve and I were still catatonic from staying up until alarming hours, another panel took place in front of a crowd of people who didn’t need to consider anything about RWRB. They were already real-ass, excited fans who saw Alex and Henry—and for some of them, Galitzine and TZP—as secular saints of cheerful-romantic-triumphant horniness. Avatars of the kinds of guys you could have a crush on in middle- and high school without raising alarms (unless you were a boy being raised by homophobes, in which case I’m sorry).
The audience on that second night got the news of a sequel from Matthew López, who spoke directly to them from the stage. They cheered and whooped and began their vigil for round two. Sí, se puede.

This was my first sanctioned strongman competition and second time competing overall, with the first being this past October. With the exception of the sandbags, which I have at home, I only ever touched the implements for the competition once or twice before the show. Novice was a single class, so there were light weights up through super heavies in the group of 15 guys, by far the biggest group, so much so that we were our own flight. I weighed in at a pretty bloated 229lbs in clothes since I wasn't worried about making weight.

Events

Sandbag Load for Max Reps
This was exactly what it sounds like, 200lbs bag over a 52in yoke for max reps in a minute. This was the first event of the days, so my nerves were pretty high, but I got to practice on this bag two weeks earlier and it was considerably easier than my 200lb bag at home, so I knew I had a chance to put up a good score if I could keep my composure. Based on where I signed up, I think it was like the 9th or 10th guy to go in each event, so I got to see a little of how guys were doing before me and was able to gauge how it was going. I ended up getting 11 reps here, which was good for 1st place in this event.

Truck Pull
This was the one outdoor event of the day. Fortunately, the rain mostly broke for us when we got out there. The ground and tow rope were pretty wet, but at least it was just kind of spitting instead of actually raining. The truck was a 15ft Uhaul I believe, which was lighter than expected. I had pulled an F250 at my last competition that felt heavier. I didn't get the best start here, my leg drive kind of stood me up more than I wanted, but I think that's a good learning experience and something I can clean up with more practice. The times were all fast on this event, and my time of 9.15 seconds was good enough for 2nd place.

Circus Dumbbell for Reps
Going into this, I knew this was going to be a rough event for me. A few shoulder injuries over the years have led me to really baby overhead pressing, and until I made the decision to start competing in strongman, I had move any kind of heavy-ish pressing out of my training to avoid making my shoulders worse. The silver lining is I have started to take my rehab stuff much more seriously, so hopefully I'll have happier healthier shoulders going forward. I had tested a circus dumbbell out twice before this. The first time failing to press a 110lb bell at all and the second getting a sloppy 4 reps with 100, which was comp weight. I watched a few videos on technique and on game day managed to get 7 reps, narrowly missing an 8th. I knew this was going to be a tough event and was hoping to finish mid-pack, which I did tying for 7th.

Plate Loaded Dinnie Stone Walk
I felt pretty good going into this event, knowing that I have been pretty good in the gym at regular farmers walks. The awkwardness of the plates banging against your legs definitely made things harder even though the carry was fairly light, 175lb in the one hand, 125lb in the other. I saw a few guys before me go blisteringly fast, a couple finishing and a couple tripping themselves up, so I went with the slow is smooth, smooth is fast motto as I didn't want to give away points by tripping myself on the plates. I ended up coming in 4th with a time of 6.5 seconds. I was hoping to do a little better here, but the 3 guys ahead of me finished around 4 seconds so I wasn't particularly close.

Last Man Standing Silver Dollar Deadlift
I wasn't entirely sure what to make of this event in terms of where I thought I'd place. Deadlift isn't my strongest lift, but I thought I could compete. I had tried this set up out once a few weeks before and pulled a hard but smooth 660lbs, which at the time I thought was pretty good. When we got into competition, I opened up at 590lbs just to make sure I got something on the board, which was very easy. After that it was 50/60lb jumps. I managed to get 750lb for a huge PR before missing 800lb. At that point I was simply out of gas, I stood no chance. What I wasn't expecting was how many novice competitors would cruise past me. 3 guys hit 800 and 4 hit 900. Fortunately, they start 100lbs jumps at 800, so there were a lot of ties ahead of me. I ended up tied 8th for this event.

Overall

At the end of it all, I ended up coming in 2nd place, holding on by 1 point. The guy who finished 1st deserved it, clearing me by 10 points. This was a really fun competition and I came away with it with a lot of learning experiences and the confidence to know I can be competitive at a local level in the sport.

What's Next

For now it's just continue to get bigger and stronger. I think I proved what I needed to myself to move up to the open class for my next competition. I'm trying to fill out a little more to hit some PRs, so it will be a pretty big shock to the system with how much heavier the 242/265 weights are vs novice. Considering signing up for PA's Strongest Man in September, which looks like it will be fun. Anyone who made it this far and watched the videos, I will happily take any and all advice/critiques on my technique, anything to get better.

Don't flame me. I'm a car enthusiasts but I feel like Honda should have a radical change with the accord or maybe something separate and make a sport line of them.
We need old honda back.
Honda's motto from the very beginning was to go fast and honestly, if they can make a sport car line of the accord, that'd be fucking awesome
Like imagine a Twin Turbo V6 Accord that's RWD or AWD, and a 2.0+ T 4 Cylinder as a base model, and for the almost highest trim one could be a V8 or V10 (referring to the Honda HSV-010 GT that ALMOST got to production but didnt), and for the highest trim, let it be a collaboration with a tuning company that'll boost the HP by a couple hundred.
Honda is known in the car community as a car enthusiasts brand. I feel like if they did this, sales would be through the roof.
Toyota is doing something similar with Gazoo Racing and having them tune their sport cars in general.
This idea fits honda because look at their past and see how many rebellious things they've done with the Honda Fit type-r, Honda Civic si/ type r, and also including Acura Integra, RSX, THE HONDA/ ACURA NSX-R GT
HYUNDAI of all brands similar to Honda are having a radical change in their brand making the N-line, and also that N Vision 74.

Without picnic-boy's pioneering achievements in sophistry this work would not be possible. Now, without further add-do (sic) I give you a sneak peak into the table of contents of How to argue in favor of capitalism and against socialism, a helpful guide: Part 2.
  1. State, often and always without evidence (because none exists), that socialists control all mainstream news media, organized religion (especially the Catholic Church, the Jesuit Order, the Hasidic Colleges and every sect of Islam), academia, K-12 public education, the entire U.S. civil service/bureaucracy (from the municipal all the way up to the federal), the FBI, the CIA, the Justice Department, the Democratic Party, the neoconservative wing of the Republican party, the Fraternal Order of Freemasons, Hollywood, all police unions, the AFL-CIO board, the entire federal judiciary, all the major drug cartels and organized crime syndicates, the Federal Reserve System and the governments of literally every single third and second world country, especially the far-right and non-white majority ones. At the exact same time, and this is really important so pay close attention, accuse socialists of being unpopular teenage losers living in their parents' basement who're too lazy to get a job.
  2. When socialists remark upon how similar the claims in point 1 are to contemporary Neo-Nazi conspiracy theories and start to question how you feel about Jewish people turn around and accuse them of being "the real anti-semites" for "wanting to take all the Jews' money away ". In no way is this conflation of all Jewish people with rich capitalists a form of economic antisemitism. If someone points out that it is simply cherry pick quotes from Marx's "On the Jewish Question" out of context so that none of the parts where Marx makes it clear he is only critiquing Judaism as a religion while at the same time advocating for the political emancipation of the Jews as people are clear to the reader. After that go on to talk about how much you support Israel and how much happier you think diaspora Jews would be if they permanently immigrated there. Also and for no particular reason talk about the "failure" of the Kibbutzim apropos of nothing and don't elaborate on anything.
  3. Always portray struggles of democratic socialists within ML states/the Eastern Bloc as struggles for capitalism. Yes, it is true the people who organized the East German Uprising of 1953, the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the Prague Spring of 1968, and the Polish Solidarity Movement of the 1980's (before the Vatican and CIA hijacked it) all demanded democratic socialism, yes they all said that, but what they "really wanted" was capitalism and don't you let any so-called "historian" tell you otherwise.
  4. Pretend that socialists invented the very concept of the state and thus that all state rulers from the Roman Emperors, Egyptian Pharaohs, Greek Archons, etc. to modern Kings, Kaisers, Tsars and Presidents were/are "socialists".
  5. Don't forget to liberally pepper your psychotic rants with plenty of freudian slips and accusations in a mirror. For example, make the claim that socialists want to destroy the family so that they can isolate, abuse and indoctrinate women and children while at the same time assert that wives and children are nothing more than an extension of "the individual" who need to be shielded by this individual from an unrealistically hostile and confusing world (literally everything and everyone outside the home).
  6. Assert that socialists invented taxation and ignore that the first taxes in recorded history took the form of land-rents set by the first governments (which were councils of militaristic landlords).
  7. Defend rent-seeking and landlordism so long as it's done by private individuals. Remember rent-seeking is only bad when the government does it because they spend that money on social parasites and welfare leeches, unlike landlords who spend it on their second families in the next state over.
  8. Claim fascism is a form of socialism but also defend the legacies of lesser known fascist regimes, military dictatorships and other totalitarian right-wing governments whose symbols and mottos the people in your country haven't developed a learned fear response to yet the way they have the Swastika and the Fasces.
  9. When leftists point out that the main victims of things like the Great Purge and the Chinese Cultural Revolution were socialists, communists, anarchists and other left-wing intellectuals who opposed Stalin and Mao's cults of personality either ignore them and maintain that the "real victims" were the tiny minority of "innocent" religious extremists, ultranationalists (who were "definitely not" fascist collaborators or spies), and grain hoarders or do a complete one hundred and eighty degree pivot and actually defend the Great Purge and Cultural Revolution because "The more left someone is, the more violent/dictatorial they are, therefore anyone to the left of Stalin and Mao would have been more violent than them and it's a good thing they were killed."
  10. If you think any of these points are self-contradicting just remember that doublethink is merely a tool and "communists" (Stalinists) shouldn't be the only ones allowed to make use of it.
  11. Ignore the mountains of evidence that an anti-Stalinist left exists. Portray these leftists as right-wingers and edit their most famous works to leave out the many mentions of their own support for socialism.
  12. Remind your interlocutor(s) that socialism is gay and cringe.
  13. Remember that reading is gay but total illiteracy is still kinda cringe (unfortunately). Therefore read as little as humanly possible without going full illiterate. Our recommendation is to only read blurbs from ancap websites, your favorite conspiracy theorist podcasters' social media threads and your fellow "capitalists' " reddit posts and nothing else.
  14. In keeping with point 13 let the only things you "know" or "learn" about socialism be things you absorbed through osmosis and half remember from your high school history textbooks assuming you even read them at all. Never look at primary sources, never listen to people trying to explain things to you in detail, always complain that quotes provided to you are "blocks of text" or "unoriginal" and can thus be dismissed without serious engagement on your part.
  15. Remember that conformism, unquestioning obedience to authority, an unflinching belief in the correctness of the current socioeconomic status quo and conventional wisdom, and a general Panglossian worldview with a huge heaping of moral nihilism (which is definitely a real philosophical school of thought and not just a rationalization of one's own sociopathic tendencies) are actually somehow radical and that "conservatism is the new punk rock" of the 21st century.
  16. Remember that guy begging for spare change you passed on your way to work? Tell everyone that he was a capitalist. Carefully explain to workers why capitalists are actually worse off than everyone else in society as hard to believe as that may seem. Remind them that when it comes to capitalists' they're "cash poor, asset rich" which means all their wealth is tied up in assets like yachts and sports cars and mansions and designer suits/dresses/jewellery and second summer homes and third winter homes and tropical island resorts where "nothing unethical ever happens so shut up about it already"...and talk about how they can't use these assets to buy groceries or clothing or even pay the "exorbitant" property taxes on their assets. "So you see the real unfortunates in our society aren't the homeless or the victims of police brutality or refugees or the working poor, it's capitalists. These brave men and women take (minor) financial risks by using what little cash they have to found businesses, not for their own benefit but for ours, so that they can give us jobs and provide us with products and services and then what do these generous souls get in return for their herculean efforts? Just a whole lot of ingratitude from socialists and a bunch of tacky junk they can't even use to feed and clothe their many, many illegitimate and adoptive children that they're definitely not doing anything questionable with on their tropical islands that aren't even worth that much anymore because of rising sea levels (which have nothing to do with climate change, which is just a Chinese communist plot to make Americans poor don'tcha know?)".

Considering multiple references to Massachusetts and Boston in general, I thought Nate lived in suburban Massachusetts. He’s a Diehard Boston sports fan, (which I know most Mainers are, but still). In the Social Studies Jeopardy, Gina gets a question about the state motto of Massachusetts, and answers it correctly. I’m not saying Gina couldn’t be that big of a big brain, but the question would only be relevant if they lived in Massachusetts. In my entire 6th grade social studies career was I ever asked about the state motto of even my state, let alone one which would be hundreds of miles away. As for the whole Boston reference, I assume the ballpark shown in the summer poem (“Remember the Ballpark in Mid July?”) was Fenway. I get that Mainers likely do travel to Boston to watch the Sox play, but I know Nate’s Dad wouldn’t drive all the way from wherever Rackliffe is all the way to Boston.

TLDR: The Atlanta Braves baseball team is the only publicly traded baseball team. DFV just posted a picture that was already tweeted by Gamestop, difference being he drew some Red Socks on the image. The Braves played the Red Sox last Tuesday and Wednesday, which led me down an incredible rabbit hole.
I am not a smart man. Just a man, who thinks too much. Even now, I should be getting my last minute Mother’s day gifts together but this won’t leave my brain. Neil Gaiman’s “American God’s” sits unfinished on my dresser but weighs heavily on my mind. This movement feels like the New God’s fighting the Old Gods. Operating software being forcefully updated to keep up with growing technology. It’s still big business and time is money.
Wednesday, Odin’s day of magic, The Braves played the Boston Red Sox and won 5-0 but there was an ill feeling in the air as the message above was broadcast on all the tv’s in the stadium including the big screen over centerfield and for those of us watching from home. Feels like a message was being sent but something caught my eye in the very first sentence. “Bankruptcy”, Cohencidence #1. I started asking myself questions and the most important was, “Who, own’s Bally network?”. The Sinclair Group and Allen Media Group.
The Sinclair Group wasn’t really eye catching for me until I saw Dr. Ben Carson is on the board of directors. Cohencidence #2 as he’s close to Trump, who’s potentially part of this new entity being created. I could taste the tin foil slowly twisting my brain like a hamster named Algernon running non-stop on a hamster wheel, while high thinking “why am I running?”. I click on the about page and see this:

The CEO of Comcast denies of course but the owners of Warner have made it known that everything is up for sale. America’s for sale. It’s estimated the deals cost him 7 Billion dollars. I wonder who advised him.
Ted is a philanthropist. At one time Ted was the largest private landowner in the United States until John C. Malone surpassed him in 2011. Ted brought Buffalo back from dwindling numbers. What once was 30k now boasts numbers well over 400k. He knows how to take things, create something new and make them grow. He’s a 2013 recipient of the Lone Sailor Award, given to Sea Service veterans, who have excelled with distinction in their respective careers during or after their service. John C. Malone started Liberty media and he’s been dubbed “Darth Vader” in business dealings, allegedly by Al Gore. Makes that Dumb Storm Troopers line hit differently from RC. Malone and Ted Turner are really good friends with similar ideals. Malone has said “I would never step on his toes” for the sake of business. Both have a contentious relationship with media mogul Rupert Murdoch, founder of News Corp. Ted and Rupert have beef from a boating incident and of course John has his good friends back. So, much so, that he starts buying up shares of News Corp. I keep searching until I find these two paragraphs on Liberty’s Wiki page:

Howdy to the beautiful people of CFB! Welcome to my ranking of the 2023 uniforms for West Virginia Mountaineer Football! I thought I would rank WVU after their new uniforms were released a few weeks ago. I intend on ranking most of the Big XII teams and new PAC additions (Arizona and Utah) soon. In fact, I already covered Colorado, ASU, Oklahoma State and TCU if you want to scratch that uniform itch. If you are interested in my thoughts regarding the Big XII uniform season, check out my 2023 Season-in-Review Post or my recent 2023 Uniform Awards post, or recent 2023 rankings, which are all up top in my profile. 11. Yellow/Yellow/Yellow - Week 4 vs TTU (W, 20-13)

The Gold Rush tradition in Morgantown started in 2007, and has had a pretty interesting history, including a College Gameday appearance, a 2012 heartbreaker against OU, a 2013 30-21 smash of No. 11 OSU, and several other wild finishes in WV. While I love the history and the crowd involvement, this 2019 jersey template is just too blank to properly allow gold uniforms to shine (I know I put “Yellow” in the combo, that's purely for convenience, I mean no disrespect at all). The new 2024 uniforms - which we’ll showcase at the end - do a much better job of providing a structure to the Gold Rush look, but these are, again, simply too much and too bold.
10. Yellow/Gray/Gray - Week 2 vs Duquesne (W, 56-17)

Ah, the gray. We’ll see another gray example later on, but I think the gray suits just work out better when mixed with blue. The yellow creates an odd balance, and makes the suit feel top heavy. Yellow pants may have helped the look, but I’m not sure I like that idea, either. I do like the complementary yellow font outline to the helmet, and hey, it was a brand-new look! That’s got to count for something.
9. Blue/Blue/Blue - Military Appreciation Week 10 vs BYU (W, 37-7)

Nothing inherently wrong with this look, I think that, again, it falls victim to the monochrome pitfalls of this 2019 update, just like the yellow/gold. The Military Edition state outline is an awesome touch, and the blue really isn't that bad compared with an all gray or all yellow, it’s just not a top pick. This same uniform and decal combo was worn in 2022 against OU, so it must be a tradition thing. The choices start getting a lot harder from here on out.
8. Blue/White/Yellow - Week 1 at Penn State (L, 15-38)

For some reason, this is always a WVU fan favorite. For the life of me I can’t figure it out. Anyone who has tuned in to my tracker knows I don’t really like tri-color looks, and this is another instance where it just doesn’t work for me. Maybe I need some convincing, maybe I’m wrong, who knows? It just doesn’t work for me. On another note, how did WVU select the Mountaineer as a mascot? Well, it's built into the location. West Virginia is known as the Mountain State because it is the only state entirely within the Appalachian Mountain region, out of the 13 states that the Appalachian Mountains pass through. Thus, residents are known as Mountaineers. The word is even featured on the state seal/motto - Montani Semper Liberi (English: "Mountaineers are Always Free"), which has remained steadfast since the state’s founding in 1863. This same phrase is embroidered on the inside collar of the uniforms, new and old. As far as we’re aware, WVU sports programs went by “the Mountaineers” starting in 1890, and have continued ever since!
7. Blue/White/White - Week 7 at UH (L, 39-41)

This was an absolutely psycho game to watch, featuring UH’s wild tip drill antics wearing their black alternates. Here, WVU wore a mostly white uniform capped off by their blue “Cue Country Roads” helmet introduced in this year’s Backyard Brawl. And yes, this look is clean. The font differentiates the white nicely, the helmet is busy enough to compensate for some of the stark white, and the suit is - of course - helped by a night game against a team wearing black. I won’t blab anymore, they're nice. The white is just a little bit too simplistic here. Pant stripes will definitely help in the new suits.
6. Blue/Gray/Blue - Week 13 at Baylor (W, 34-31)

One of the more eclectic away combos I’ve ever seen, this look makes me sad that the gray has been officially put out of commission. It’s actually the first time WVU wore gray on the road and only the sixth gray game usage since 2019. It definitely works better as a road combo against the dark green of Baylor. The blue looks great sandwiching the gray suit, but the yellow outline feels a little out of place in this uniform as opposed to the white or blue majority uniforms. Lots of upside, but just enough complaints to keep it at the 6 spot.
5. White/White/White - Week 11 at OU (L, 20-59)

I can’t get over these beautiful helmets. West Virginia’s helmet is a work of art. Using the decal popularized by the “Cue Country Roads” uniforms from the past two years on an otherwise clean white shell was a stroke of genius. The more detailed logo draws the eye compared to the stark white jersey and pants, while the large blue numbers help in breaking up the field. Still, this look may have looked a little bit better with some blue pants, or at least more blue accessories like shoes, belts, and gloves. The blue facemask is a start, but yeah, I like this look a lot. Still, the helmet puts these way up on my list.
4. Blue/White/Blue - Week 9 at UCF (W, 41-28)

While I like the blue/gray sandwich in #6, this is definitely a more improved version. The overall flow of the uniform feels better here. No outline on the numbers helps keep things clean and matches the top and bottom nicely. How did WVU originally pick their colors? Simple. They’re featured in the state seal. These colors were adopted by the school in 1890, inspired by the West Virginia state seal, featuring a boulder that has been inscribed with the state’s founding - June 20, 1863. In front of the boulder lies two crossed rifles and a Grecian liberty cap as a symbol of the state's fight for liberty. The two men on either side of the boulder represent agriculture and industry. It’s as simple as that! This program really does represent state pride like no other. We're almost to the top spots!
3. Blue/Blue/Yellow - Week 8 vs OSU (L, 48-34) and Week 12 vs UC (W, 42-21)

Ah. The podium is here. These next three picks were all highly debated and could very well go either way. This look is obviously the most traditional of the wardrobe, and has been worn three times since I started tracking publicly in 2022. And of course, it’s one of the most recognizable combos for the Mountaineers in general. For me, I am especially reminded of Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, and Geno Smith lighting up the scoreboard against Baylor with Terrence Williams in 2012. I was just beginning to enjoy and follow college football more often, and this game really sparked an interest in me, especially as 2012 was a good KSU year AND WVU’s Big 12 opener. The yellow pants provide a great contrast to the blue. And the flying WV logo is one of the few “letter logos” that I think works really well. You just can’t beat it despite the pitfalls of the 2019 template. The 2024 version will be a sight to behold and could very well cement itself in first place next year. Beautiful, classic, and a no-brainer pick for a medal.
2. White/White/Blue - Week 5 at TCU (W, 24-21)

What sets this one apart from all the other away combos? Unlike a lot of the other WVU suits, this one almost completely removes yellow while still feeling balanced in color. The only yellow on these are splashed on the helmet and hip logo. The blue may originally seem to weigh the look down, but once you add the large blue logo on the helmet and balance it with the almost all white on the rest of the suit, you get a magnificent away look. It combines the benefit of a crisp white out with the “semi-symmetry” - if you will - from a X/Y/X sandwich look. Just beautiful, and the most “modern” feeling of the year’s combos.

And finally, first place! Last year, we saw the amazing and incredible away version of this uniform. This year’s home version featured a perfect gold usage which felt balanced yet bold. The symmetrical blues, liberal use of gold, sublimated WV road map, the consistent striping on the helmet and pants, “Mountaineers” wordmark on the chest all topped off by that immaculate gold WV state outline is oh so wonderful. I mean, how is it possible to kick this much ass? It’s everything wonderful about the away uniforms added to a more traditional color scheme that, wow. Honestly, the picture itself does a great job. Creative, symmetrical, and a color scheme everyone loves, this is a grand slam design.

The 2024 suits honor the past traditions of WVU uniforms while also improving on the initial 2019 update through the new Nike F.U.S.E template. They maintain the updated 2019 color scheme and font, feature the fairly new state-outline WVU logo from the 2022 and 2023 “Cue Country Roads” alternates (both on the collar and helmet options), and add on some striping, shoulder accents, and wordmarks. The Flying WV returned to the sleeves for the first time since 2012 with wide acclaim. Also a feature of the Don Nehlen era are the pants stripes dating back to the 60s-90s. The most controversial piece of the uniform are those USC reminiscent 2007-2012 shoulder accents. My overall thoughts? It's a great update. 2019 was far too plain. The color scheme helps, but here the colors get a wonderful structure to build upon. The WV sleeves, the wordmark, and pant stripes are amazing touches, but I think the shoulder accents just add a little too much clutter to an otherwise perfect front. Overall, the helmets are mostly unchanged, the jerseys are a slight improvement, and the pants are a massive step up. I’d give the update an 8/10! Additionally, the Mountaineers released an inspired “Coal Dust” alternate honoring the storied tradition of West Virginian coal mining. They use a unique and fascinating coal pattern pulled straight off an actual coal mine tour, incorporate a black and white state-outline logo on the helmet that is to die for, and use gray/white vertical stripes in a way that tastefully mimics high visibility vests worn by miners. The center stripe on the helmet is my favorite touch, featuring the coal pattern used on the uniform, but with a white to transparent gradient mimicking the light of a miner's headlamp. I mean, this is a blackout look done right. I am so excited to see these in action. Combined together, the main and alternate looks for WVU are all very exciting and definite improvements!
If you’ve got some time, send a nice email to the athletics department design team of Kristin Coldsnow, Matt Wells, Michael Fragale, Joe Swan and Steve Uryasz, who designed the brand new 2024 look. The team worked in conjunction with football equipment managers Dan Nehlen and Austin Blake, who also deserve some praise for the fantastic job they are doing. The EQ room is a tough place to work, and these fine folks kill it day in and day out.

TLDR: The Atlanta Braves baseball team is the only publicly traded baseball team.
I am not a smart man. Just a man, who thinks too much. Even now, I should be getting my last minute Mother’s day gifts together but this won’t leave my brain. Neil Gaiman’s “American God’s” sits unfinished on my dresser but weighs heavily on my mind. This movement feels like the New God’s fighting the Old Gods. Operating software being forcefully updated to keep up with growing technology. It’s still big business and time is money.
Wednesday, Odin’s day of magic, The Braves played the Boston Red Sox and won 5-0 but there was an ill feeling in the air as this message was broadcast on all the tv’s in the stadium including the big screen over centerfield and for those of us watching from home:
" Bally Sport is no longer available. The owner of Bally Sports is in bankruptcy proceedings and we have offered them multiple options to continue carrying their networks. They have declined each one and we no longer have the rights to continue carrying their content. As a result, we'll be issuing proactive monthly credits to customers for the loss of this network."
That statement sounds an awful lot like someone chose to turn the buy button off. Feels like a message was being sent but something caught my eye in the very first sentence. “Bankruptcy”, Cohencidence #1. I started asking myself questions and the most important was, “Who, own’s Bally network?”. The Sinclair Group and Allen Media Group.
The Sinclair Group wasn’t really eye catching for me until I saw Dr. Ben Carson is on the board of directors. Cohencidence #2 as he’s close to Trump, who’s potentially part of this new entity being created. I could taste the tin foil slowly twisting my brain like a hamster named Algernon running non-stop on a hamster wheel, while high thinking “why am I running?”. I click on the about page and see this:

Here’s an article from January 25, 2024 talking about Comcast potentially merging with Warner Brother’s Discovery. The CEO of Comcast denies of course but the owners of Warner have made it known that everything is up for sale. America’s for sale. The way this country has been run economically has got everybody’s money “fucked up” and people are pissed. Which is hard to fathom, when it comes to people who have way more money than the combined generational wealth accumulated by your entire family.
One such man is Ted Turner. Like Ryan Cohen, he learned lessons from his father, who built a successful billboard company. He started off with CNN before turning into a media mogul and then he bought, The Atlanta Braves. He managed the team for one day, May 11, 1977. He owned all of Atlanta’s sports teams at one time. Time Warner would eventually sell off the teams. He’s been through economic downturn before as he watched the company he built be sold off after making decisions to merge with Time Warner in the 90’s and AOL-Time Warner in 2001, which resulted in him losing the majority vote to the board. It’s estimated the deals cost him 7 Billion dollars. I wonder who advised him.
Ted is a philanthropist. At one time Ted was the largest private landowner in the United States until John C. Malone surpassed him in 2011. Ted brought Buffalo back from dwindling numbers. What once was 30k now boasts numbers well over 400k. He knows how to take things, create something new and make them grow. He’s a 2013 recipient of the Lone Sailor Award, given to Sea Service veterans, who have excelled with distinction in their respective careers during or after their service. Another recipient of this award, President Theodore Roosevelt at the turn of the millennia in 2000. Cohencidence # 4

With renewed vigor, I keep going. Who the hell is Liberty Media? Why were the Braves transferred and not sold?
John C. Malone started Liberty media and he’s been dubbed “Darth Vader” in business dealings, allegedly by Al Gore. Makes that Dumb Storm Troopers line hit differently from RC. Malone and Ted Turner are really good friends with similar ideals. Malone has said “I would never step on his toes” for the sake of business. Both have a contentious relationship with media mogul Rupert Murdoch, founder of News Corp. Ted and Rupert have beef from a boating incident and of course John has his good friends back. So, much so, that he starts buying up shares of News Corp. I keep searching until I find these two paragraphs on Liberty’s Wiki page:

Thanks to Edwin Barnes it all begins to make sense. He was the first to mention the connection to Trump and $DJT, which allowed me to question everything. Hindi sa pinagtatanggol ko ang ABS -- also worked in the local industry -- pero kasi malamang na magkaiba ang industry set up ng Pilipinas vs Hollywood. Napakaraming layers ng approval ang ABS bago magkaroon ng show. Opposite ng set up ng GMA or ng TV5. It shows sa output nila, and napuna mo rin yun na mas daring actually yung other two networks but they don't have the machinery and the gloss that ABS has. Ang ABS may template, iisang hulma ng mga story but they really know how to market things.

Yes, you read it right. Nowadays, any creative writer can work remotely as long as they have internet access.
Puwede din sa isang isolated island, basta may StarLink.
The year is 2024, and using Zoom or Google Meet for team meetings is the norm.
We also rely on platforms like Discord, MS Teams, and Slack for communication, so this shouldn't come as a surprise to you.
Brainstorming?
As the head story writer and sometimes a creative consultant, I handle everything from sparking ideas to dumping thoughts, conducting research on the market and target audience, conceptualizing (world-building and character creation), outlining, writing the actual story, proofreading, and editing/polishing (countless times) before pitching my idea to streaming companies.
In short, I own my stories, sell the copyrights, and sometimes serve as one of the executive producers.
If I get lucky, I might even become the showrunner of my own TV show — this is my dream para makagawa din ako ng sarili kong TV series, na dito na sa bansa natin ang setting location.
Then, the streaming executives will hire other showrunners, producers, scriptwriters, etc., to bring my story to life — from envisioning it in my head to actually watching it on my TV screen.
Turnaround time?
Real-time naman. Gising ako sa gabi, tulog sa umaga.
Resibo?
Ever heard of the word “Confidential”?
You really think na magse-send ako basta-basta ng mga details at pictures of my work because someone questioned my credibility?
And as for that other concern...
There’s nothing wrong if i-prioritize ng mga local production houses dito ang kumita. Afterall, hindi naman tayo nagpapaka-hirap para lang malugi, hindi ba?
Bihira lang din ang nagpu-pursue ng kanilang passion and at the same time kumita ng tama — so I consider myself lucky, but I also started from scratch.
Ang main point ng incomplete case study at insights na na-post ko last night, with a few snide remarks, is to raise awareness sa mga local creative writers, maging sa mga producers na din.
Hindi por que hinahabol natin ang kumita eh doesn't mean we have to sacrifice the quality of storytelling and plotting in our local shows.
Isn't it embarrassing enough if a show with poor quality ends up at the top spot on Netflix PH? That's why there's no avoiding the multitude of feedback — both good and bad.
It's also inevitable to make comparisons.
As a creative writer, my motto is to aim for about 90-95% polish in my work — meaning, there's always room for improvement because nothing is ever perfect.
But if you look at our mainstream media, they often hit less like 60-70%. And sometimes even lower. That's why the quality of what they put out isn't always up to snuff.
Parang gumawa lang first draft na may kaunting proofreading, and as a result, tons of details get overlooked, leaving gaping holes in the story.
And to top it off, the scripting is just plain lousy. There's no effort to improve it whatsoever.
Sorry, not sorry!
Although maraming natuwa kasi kahit papaano, na-enjoy nila ang CBML, marami ding na-disappoint.
Unfortunately, it’s part of my job na manood ng mga TV series na may bad storyline and storytelling — it helps to improve my work.
Sabi nga nila, minsan may ginto (pera) sa basura, no pun intended.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with giving our target audience what makes them happy.
But... wouldn't it be even better to raise the quality of our work at least a little by improving it further?
No doubt, ABS-CBN is stellar at marketing their products — I mean, I practically grew up glued to their shows whenever I had the chance.
But I also want to see our mainstream media step up their game because I believe they can do it without breaking the bank.
Pinuri ko ang pagiging risk-taker ng GMA’s creative writers but I didn’t fail to mention na sablay din sila sa maraming aspeto maging sa pag-market ng kanilang mga shows.
Pati nga sa pag-market ng mga artista ng GMA eh, sablay din. Insert: Barbie Forteza.
Sadly, recent lang na-recognize ng marami ang galing ni Barbie sa pag-arte — dahil sa MCAI.
And as for TV5, hindi pa nila nari-reach 'yung paki ko.
The truth is, karamihan sa ating mga Pinoy hindi marunong tumanggap ng constructive criticisms and feedback kaya hanggang ngayon yung quality ng mga mainstream local shows natin is same pa din 20 years ago.
And even if there have been changes, hindi ganun ka-drastic.
There's a serious shortage of new elements in storylines, leading to recycling the same old stuff repeatedly.
Innovation is what they really need.
Since you mentioned that you used to work in the PH entertainment industry, I'm sure you understand how important it is to listen to the viewers' feedback, right?
Paano tayo matututo kung naglalaro tayo palagi ng bulag-bulagan at bingi-bingihan?
Fact: maraming missed opportunities and lapses sa story and plot ng Can’t Buy Me Love — na ginamit kong example sa case study ko — na dapat sana nai-ayos man lang bago mag-roll ang camera.
Hollywood indeed operates on a whole different level, with sky-high budgets for everything from production to marketing.
But you know what? We shouldn't use that as an excuse for poor writing.
Instead, hindi masama na gawing inspiration ang creativity nila for the betterment of our industry.

Our creative folks should really dive into the nitty-gritty of storytelling and plotting in those shows.
I mean, they've won over hearts not just in the US and SoKor but also right here in our own backyard.
Here's another tip: When outlining, throw in lots of "What Ifs and Why Nots."
The crazier, the better. Best believe me.
And you know what?
Reading fiction books is a killer way to sharpen the skills of our local creative writers.
You don't need a fat budget — just crank up the creativity.
So hindi budget ang problema.
My first 'case study' post might be incomplete, but it's harmless — na may kaunting snide remarks. Sorry na! Couldn't help it.
Most of the comments on it are just wishing for some serious upgrades in our mainstream media.
I hope nobody takes it the wrong way.
