"THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" (2022) Commentary

2024.05.19 17:26 SmoothBarnacle4891 "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" (2022) Commentary

During the height of my high regard for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), among the movies of which I had been a major fan were the Captain America releases. At least two of them. The third film in this mini franchise - 2016's "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR" proved to be a major disappointment for me. However, when I heard that Disney and Marvel Films had plans to air a miniseries about the characters Sam Wilson aka the Falcon and James "Bucky" Barnes aka the Winter Soldier, I must admit that I felt a renewed interest in the franchise again.
When I said a renewal of the MCU franchise, I meant it. Aside from a few movies like "ANT-MAN", "BLACK PANTHER", "CAPTAIN MARVEL" and "ETERNALS"; the MCU had become a major disappointment for me ever since the release of 2015's "THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON". One might ask . . . what about the MCU television productions that aired on the Disney Plus streaming channel? Aside from one production that I somewhat liked and one that I loved, most of them have been disappointing to me. Unfortunately, I have to include this follow-up to the Captain America movies, "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER".
Set six months after 2019's "THE AVENGERS: ENDGAME", "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" followed former war veteran/Avenger Sam Wilson, who has resumed working the for the U.S. government, while using his role as the Falcon. When the government recruits Sam to track down and deal with a group of enhanced anarchists known as "the Flag Smashers", former World War II veteran/HYDRA tool/Avenger James "Bucky" Buchannan aka the Winter Soldier decides to join Sam in his mission, due to his lingering guilt as a former HYDRA assassin and their shared experiences as Steve Rogers' close friends and battling Thanos and his army.
Since "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" had aired on the DisneyPlus channel in six episodes, I had seriously considered ranking the episodes. But like Season three of the Marvel Netflix series, "DAREDEVIL", the more I watched "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLIDER", the more it disappointed me. Aside from complaints about its pacing, the limited series had received a great deal of praise from critics and fans alike. Because of this, I believe it was one of the most overrated productions in the MCU history. People had seemed so focused on little moments and scenes that very few had noticed how the series' narrative seemed to be all over the map. For example:
~\Sam Wilson~* - This limited series is supposed to be a follow up to the events of "ENDGAME" in which Sam had received the Captain America shield from an aging Steve Rogers, a sign for him to take up the latter's costumed role. Was this an attempt by Marvel Films/Disney to make Sam a more relevant character? If so, why? Why did a MCU character have to replace Steve as the new Captain America to be more relevant? Why not allow Sam to continue as the Falcon, only push his role to the forefront as one of the franchise's new leading characters? Some might accuse me of not wanting a black man as Captain America, a topic that was brought up in the series. Frankly, I never wanted another character - regardless of race, gender or ethnicity - to become the new Captain America. That includes Bucky Barnes. Allow Steve Rogers to fade into the background and let Sam (as the Falcon) shine as one of the franchise's new leads. However, the die has been cast. One can only sit back and see if moviegoers are willing to accept Sam as the new Captain America.
Perhaps the MCU had to make Sam the new Captain America in order to make him more relevant. Why would I say that? The showrunner for "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER", Malcolm Spellman, came dangerously close to shoving Sam into the role of the second lead or worst, a role he has been since his debut in 2014's "CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER" - a supporting character. During the series' first three or four episodes, someone other than Sam (either Bucky Barnes or Helmut Zemo - two white men) made decisions that allowed the plot to move forward, not Sam. He was simply regulated to being an observer or reactor. The series even managed to undermine Sam's decision not to support the Sokovia Accords in "CIVIL WAR". In thee 2016, Sam became the first Avenger to speak out against the Accords and declare his intentions not to sign it. Yet, according to Bucky in this series, Sam had merely followed Steve's example in rejecting the Accords. And Spellman did nothing to allow Sam to correct this misconception.
~\James "Bucky" Barnes~* - One of the few aspects of "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR" I found enjoyable proved to be the interactions between Sam Wilson and Bucky Buchannan. Despite their lingering jealousy and competition over the role as "Steve Rogers' best friend", the pair's interactions proved to be very entertaining, thanks to the screen chemistry between Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. Unfortunately, Mackie and Stan could not save "CIVIL WAR" for me. Nor could they save "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER", due to its problematic writing. A good deal of that writing surrounded Bucky's character. I have so many questions about his role in this series. For example:
-Why would any official of the Joint Counter Terrorist Center allow Bucky to visit and question Helmut Zemo, the man responsible for the U.N. conference bombing in Vienna, in "CIVIL WAR"? That made very little sense to me. Surely the JCTC authorities remembered how Zemo managed to brainwash Bucky into making his own prison break in "CIVIL WAR"? Also, Bucky was on parole for his activities as a brainwashed HYDRA assassin. Yet, the JCTC had allowed him to visit Zemo? Surely, the showrunner could have allowed Sam, who was serving the U.S. government again, to be the one to visit and question Zemo?
-How on earth did Bucky managed to evade being arrested and charged for helping Zemo escape from the JCTC? The U.S. and other governments should have been suspicious of Bucky after learning about his visit to Zemo.
-Bucky came off as an arrogant school jock, who thought he was entitled to get his way - especially in his interactions with Sam. I found it hilarious that many fans had criticized John Walker aka Captain America aka U.S. Agent for such toxic behavior. Yet, they had turned a blind eye to Bucky's own behavior. And so did the series - up until the last two episodes. Why did the showrunner allow Bucky to get away with this behavior toward Sam for so long without any complaints from the latter?
-I did not care how Bucky had bullied his way into Sam's mission without the latter's consent. What I found even more annoying was the U.S. government's decision to allow Bucky to join Sam's mission after that ludicrous "therapy session" they were forced to attend together.
~\Racism -~* A good number of MCU fans had complained about the inclusion of racism in "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER". I had no problems with this direction, considering the story was about Sam, an African-American man, becoming the new Captain America. However, I had a good deal of problems with how the production explored the topic of racism.
The story of Isaiah Bradley, Marvel's second Captain America, had originated in the comics. In the MCU, he was a Korea War veteran whom the United States Army used as one of several unwilling African-American test subjects for their version of the Super Soldier serum. I realize that both Marvel Comics and the MCU had attempted to use Bradley's experience as a metaphor for the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The problem is that I cannot see the U.S. government and the Army - both racist organizations in the early 1950s - be willing to risk the possibility of creating a non-white super soldier. Despite the recent desegregation of the Armed Forces in the late 1940s. And both the government and the Army had been more than willing to use white soldiers in other experiments.
After saving a group of black American super soldiers from a prison camp, Bradly was imprisoned by the U.S. government for thirty years. I saw nothing wrong with this twist in the character's narrative, until I remembered two things - Bradley had been able to free his fellow soldiers without anyone's help; and nearly sixty years later, Steve Rogers managed to break into the Raft and free those Avengers who had refused to sign the Sokovia Accord. Why was Bradley unable to free himself from prison? This is the man who had defeated the Winter Soldier by breaking the latter's metal arm. And he was not powerful enough to make a prison break, let alone evade capture?
I had assumed Sam's difficulty in becoming the new Captain America would stem from the government's reluctance to recruit a black man for the position. That would explain their decision to recruit the blond-haired John Walker instead. But the series never really made it clear whether political racism had played a role in Walker's recruitment. The series also had James "Rhodey" Rhodes had paid Sam a visit, emphasizing the importance of the new Captain America being black. As it turned out, Sam's own insecurities about becoming Captain America had more to do with him not initially assuming the role. There was also that interesting scene outside Bradley's Baltimore home where the police arrested Sam during verbal argument with Bucky. Although the cops backed away when they recognized Sam as an Avenger, they ended up arresting the parolee Bucky for missing his required therapy appointment. This scene was supposed to be a case of racial profiling. But . . . we might as well be honest. In the real world, the police would not have backed down from hassling Sam. What I found more disturbing was the production's handling of Bucky's arrest. Once the police discovers that Sam was an Avenger; they turned to arrest Bucky for failing to show up for his missing his therapy session. Not only did the police arrest Bucky with a more gentle behavior, they did so, accompanied by Henry Jackman's mournful score, something that did not accompany the moment of Sam being arrested. Were the audiences expected to notice the hypocrisy and racism in the police's handling of the two men? Expected to feel sympathy for Bucky? Or both?
The last episode featured a scene of two black kids playing with toy Captain America shields. Someone had commented that the shields (especially in the hands of non-white children) represented hope to the future of race relations in the United States. Why? How? This country had a biracial president for EIGHT YEARS. Yet, U.S. racial policies have remained problematic even to this day. I can say the same for other countries. The so-called symbolism of this scene only reminded me of how human beings put so much faith in imagery and symbolism. And this strikes me as a FALSE FAITH. Why was taking up the mantle of a costumed hero that had been previously occupied by a white man, the only way for Sam Wilson to become relevant within the MCU franchise? What was wrong with him being "the Falcon"? Sam becoming the next Captain America was not going to save the U.S. in regard to race relations - not in real life and not in the fictional world of the MCU. Looking back on the series, the series' only scenario that seemed to expose racism in a realistic manner, proved to be Sam's failure to acquire a bank loan for his family's fishing boat in Louisiana.
~\Sharon Carter~* - I am certain many MCU fans are aware of this. One of Marvel Comics' most iconic couples happened to be Steve Rogers aka Captain America and Sharon Carter aka Agent 13. She also happened to be the great-niece of Peggy Carter, Steve's love interest during World War II. Portrayed by Emily VanCamp, Sharon was first introduced as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in "CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER" as a potential love interest for Steve. Despite Sharon's appearance in the following Captain America movie, "CIVIL WAR", their romance never really developed. Many blamed the lack of chemistry between VanCamp and Chris Evans. I never had a problem with their screen chemistry. I had a problem with the lack of relationship development between Sharon and Steve. And I blame Kevin Feige's decision to transform the third Captain America film into a third (and badly written) pseudo Avengers movie. The change in the film's narrative, along with Sharon's failure to appear in "THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR" and "ENDGAME", left no opportunity for Sharon and Steve to become the romantic pair they had been in the comics. Instead, Sharon became a fugitive from the U.S. government after helping Steve and Sam hunt down Bucky, moved to Madripoor, a city-state with no U.S. extradition and became an embittered criminal known as "the Power Broker".
After "CIVIL WAR", nearly five years had passed before Sharon appeared in another MCU production - namely this series. And what happened? The franchise, with Spellman, ended up completely destroying her character by transforming her into the villain known as Power Broker, the criminal leader of an Indonesian city-state called Madripoor. After helping Steve and Sam acquire their suits and equipment in order to go after Bucky in "CIVIL WAR", Sharon lost her job with the C.I.A. and became a fugitive. She eventually moved to Madripoor, a city-state with no U.S. extradition, to evade capture, survived Thanos' Snap and became an embittered criminal nicknamed "the Power Broker" in order to survive the new world.
What really pissed me off about Sharon's arc between "CIVIL WAR" and "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" is that her development into a major villain all happened OFF SCREEN. Off screen. Apparently, screenwriters for "INFINITY WAR" had written a draft that included Sharon in the movie. But according to Christopher Markus, he and Stephen McFeeley could not imagine scenes featuring Steve and Sharon trying to make it work in an apartment, because the 2018 movie did not have time to focus on their personal life. Why did Marvel simply fail to allow Sharon to be part of Steve's vigilante team - like Sam and Natasha Romanoff? I mean . . . good fucking grief! And why did Malcolm Spellman believe the only way Sharon could be interesting was to become a villain in "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER"? This was his idea of improving Sharon's character?
~\Helmut Zemo aka Baron Zemo~* - Why did Malcolm Spellman, Kevin Feige and the MCU thought it necessary to bring back Helmut Zemo, the Sokovian-born villain from "CIVIL WAR"? What role did he play in "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER"? I realize that Bucky, of all people, visited the incarcerated Zemo to acquire information on who had created the super-soldier serum that empowered the Flag Smashers. But why did he believe Zemo could provide the answer? Because he thought HYDRA was involved? Bucky or Sam could have searched for information from sources other than Zemo, who had been incarcerated for . . . what? Eight years? Eight years. Zemo managed to become something of a crowd-pleaser, thanks to Daniel Brühl's performance. Otherwise, I found his presence in this series unnecessary.
~\The Big Bad~* - Why on earth did it take this series so long to finally reveal the main villain's identity? At first, the series hinted the Flag Smashers, led by Karli Morgenthau. However, the series tossed other potential candidates for the Big Bad before viewers - John Walker, Helmut Zemo and yes, Sharon Carter. But in the end, Morgenthau and her group proved to be the main villains.
The Flag Smashers were a group of empowered people who believed the world was a better place between Thanos' Snap and the Blip (resurrection of those who had died during the Snap), when Humans around the world managed to unite and form a borderless society, one in which people helped others without any thought to nationalism and bias. Thanks to the Avengers, the world resumed its conflicts between nationalities and other groups. In other words, the borders returned.
Frankly, I have nothing against this ideal. Only Ms. Morgenthau and her followers resorted to violence and terrorism to achieve their goals. Does this sound familiar? It should. The Flag Smashers proved to be another example of characters with a progressive goal, resorting to extremism and becoming villains. This seemed to be a growing trend within the franchise, which I believe began with Erik "Killmonger" Stevens aka Prince N'Jadaka in 2018's "BLACK PANTHER". Since then, the MCU has not looked back at its growing roster of progressive villains. Perhaps I should not have been surprised. The franchise's ambiguous portrayal of an unconstitutional document like the Sokovia Accords, should have been the wake-up call. It seemed as if Kevin Feige, Marvel Films and Disney Studios had finally exposed themselves for the faux progressives they pretend to be. Frankly, this form of villainy has become tiresome to me.
After writing this article, I had considered ranking the six episodes featured in "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" anyway. But I decided against it. My dislike of the series made it impossible for me to even bother. Being a fan of the first two Captain America movies, I had truly hoped this series would redeem the franchise. Unfortunately, it proved to be just as disappointing as "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR". Pity. Perhaps the fourth film, "CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD" will do the trick. I hope so.

2024.05.19 14:27 AporiaParadox What are some examples of characters, costumes, and/or concepts being oddly prominent in an adaptation because of what was happening in then recent comics?

I was thinking about how the only reason Jubilee is in X-Men '97 is because she was in the original X-Men animated series, and she was only in that series because at the time Jubilee was still a prominent member of the X-Men. If the show had been made a few years earlier or a few years later, Jubilee probably wouldn't have been in it because she hasn't been a prominent member of the X-Men in a while (to the point that she lost her mutant powers for over a decade). The same applies to lots of adaptations of superhero comics, they'll take inspiration from all of comic book history, but there is a strong tendency to adapt either the origin or the most recent stuff.
Other examples are how in the 2000s lots of Marvel adaptations took a lot of inspiration from the Ultimate Universe, or how Wally West was the Flash and John Stewart was Green Lantern in the DCAU because Barry Allen and Hal Jordan were dead in the comics at the time, or how Adam West Batman seems goofy and quaint now compared to the Dark Knight we now know Batman as but that's just what the character was like in the Silver Age. The most blatant one to me is how during the mid-2010s, the Inhumans were blatantly being shoved everywhere in cartoons and games, and the X-Men were completely absent from all adaptations, even sequels to games they'd previously been in like Marvel vs. Capcom.
What other examples are there of adaptations doing things that seem strange in hindsight but make sense because of the context of the comics at the time?

2024.05.19 07:23 Eastern-Ability-2894 John Kreese is the most tragic character in the whole Karate Kid/Cobra Kai Universe.

John Kreese is the most tragic character in the whole Karate Kid/Cobra Kai Universe.
In the Karate kid and Cobra Kai Universe, John Kreese has the most tragic life story ever. In my opinion he is also one of the most tragic characters in film/tv history.
Kreese grew up without a father and had a mentally ill mother who sadly killed herself when he was a young man of only 19 years old, leaving young Kreese to fend for himself. To add more tragedy to an already tragic loss, he was constantly bullied by others because of his mother's actions. Eventually things in life started to look more promising for Kreese as one day in 1965 he met a beautiful young lady named Betsy while working as a bus boy at a diner. After witnessing Betsy's then boyfriend David abusing her, Kreese stepped in to save her, beating up David and his friend, Kreese then offered Betsy a ride home which she happily accepted with a big smile to Kreese.
For the next couple of years Kreese and Betsy dated, they adored each other so much and were madly in love, eventually he left her and headed to basic training for the US Army. Kreese said his goodbyes to the love of his life, Betsy, along with a few kisses, promising to not only return home to her but also that he'll come back a hero. By 1968 Kreese was already in Vietnam serving, he quickly gained a reputation for basically having a death wish, a reputation which caught the attention of Captain George Turner who was putting together a Special Task Force Unit, after meeting Turner, Kreese joined his unit, choosing his good friends Ponytail and Twig, aka Terry Silver to also join the group. Captain Tuner was a Korean War veteran who learned Tang Soo-Do from Master Kim Sun-Yung of South Korea. Turner taught Kreese, Silver and Ponytail many aspects of warfare including hand to hand combat. During that time though Turner would often berate Kreese for his inability to shed his humanity during physical confrontations, as Kreese was still fighting with mercy. During a sparring match with Turner, Kreese landed a good punch on him, but he briefly lowered his guard which Turner immediately took advantage of, sending Kreese to the ground. Turner went on to explain that it's either kill or be killed and that you never have second thoughts or hestiate and you show your enemy no mercy.
Soon after Kreese pulled out a picture of Betsy, a photograph which she had sent him earlier on and while looking at her photo, Kreese said that he'll be home soon, but tragically that would never happen as Betsy was already gone by that point, passing away in a fatal car accident. Though Captain Turner did receive a letter that said she had tragically passed away but he never told Kreese or even gave him that letter. Later on during a mission to eliminate a Viet Cong encampment, Silvers radio erupted, giving away their position to the enemy, Turner ordered Kreese to detonate the explosive charge which Ponytail had just set but Kreese hesitated as Ponytail was still in the blast radius. Ponytail tried to run away but was caught by some Vietnamese soldiers who knocked him to the ground. The rest of the unit was then captured as well with Ponytail being executed right in front of them soon after. For the next year or so Kreese, Silver and Turner plus the rest of the unit were subjected to numerous methods of torture including being locked inside a bamboo cage and being forced to fight one another to the death on a platform suspended above a pit full of snakes, all for the amusement of the Vietnamese soldiers.
Sometime in 1969, Captain Turner and Terry Silver were chosen to fight each other but Kreese decided to take Silver's spot and fight their Captain instead. Turner who still hadn't forgiven Kreese for his actions in getting all of them captured cruelly revealed and even mocked that Betsy had died in a car accident. The news of her death profoundly impacted Kreese as he was clearly so devastated, initially dropping to one knee in pain, trying to process what he had just heard. Captain Turner early on in the fight had the upper hand on Kreese who was still very distraught by the news of Betsy's tragic death, but Kreese then became very enraged and defeated Captain Turner. Kreese showed his Captain no mercy by stomping Turner's hand as he was hanging by the platform suspended above the snake pit, Captain Turner fell to his death in a pit full of snakes. After the Captain's demise and still standing on the platform, Kreese immediately closed his eyes and let out a breath, in that moment Kreese was reborn, the kind hearted man with compassion and mercy had died with his love Betsy and now Kreese was starting to embrace a much darker side of himself, This is where Kreese first adopted his Strike First, Strike Hard and No Mercy moto. Kreese then freed the rest of the unit including the young Terry Silver who hugged Kreese and promised him a life long debt for saving his life. Kreese would also go on to save Silver more times between 1969 and 1975.
After his victory over the snake pit, Kreese and the other surviving members of the unit earned berets as well as battlefield commissions as officers in the US Army. Kreese would continue to Serve in the US Army Green Berets, earning the rank of Captain himself before leaving the military in 1975. Kreese also became the US Army's Karate Champion, a title he held from 1970 to 1972. He returned home to the valley very hardened and embittered by the numerous bereavements he suffered during the war, especially with the loss of his beloved Betsy. Soon after returning home in 1975 Kreese would co-found Cobra Kai Dojo alongside Terry Silver, teaching new generations the way of the fist and the same creed that Turner had once taught him, and the rest is history as we know it.
So Kreese is definitely the most tragic character in all of Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. He was a very good and kind hearted man that was twisted by unfathomable amounts of pain, loss, suffering and extreme violence from war. All Kreese wanted was to live a normal life, to serve his country and be a hero, to marry and have a family of his own one day with the only woman he ever truly cared about and really loved, Besty, but all Kreese got in the end was losing everything and everybody, leaving him with absolutely nothing. So Kreese shredded his humanity and buried all emotions deep, he stopped feeling when his Besty died, overtime building himself into the completely merciless, heartless and vicious karate sensei he is today.
His very sad and tragic backstory also helps us understand why in Kreese's mind, there is no middle ground, that survival has to mean the absolute defeat or death of your enemy, whether it's on the streets or in competition, even in the dojo, survival in life depends on that kill or be killed mentality which was psychologically engraved into Kreese through the brutality of war, his Captains cruel teachings and the very tragic/ profounding losses Kreese suffered in his life, the most impactful and damaging of all being the death of his sweetheart Betsy.
Though today John Kreese is a very cruel, vicious, merciless and cold hearted person, i still feel a great pity for him.

Howdy! Before getting into todays sale, I want to briefly address the ongoing security concerns with the current scam.
  1. I will never disclose my password to anyone.
  2. Not only does my reddit account have 2FA, all my emails associated have 2FA. In general, every account I possess, has 2FA.
  3. I will never accept Crypto for any reason.
  4. And lastly, just take precaution. Always ask for proof pictures, check the Ban List, middlemen are worth every penny for the protection it provides to both parties.
Now for todays sale, finally back for another sale. Most groups have a picture with all the items together to better organize my post. I apologize for the lengthy post.

2024.05.19 03:00 Retroid69 [lyrics] still working on the title, looking for any feedback/constructive criticism

verse 1:
keep the mind flow like rain fall in Big Bog,
how i eat words is none your business, sick smog
spiral out like a Stereolab cover, the emperor hovers,
viral as smog from two bars ago, remember her color
tomato for ketchup, making dots and loops on his signature,
cash checks to catch up, taking shots to shoot for no ligature
marks on the wrists like Shinola glitter, ain’t fish scale,
singing that lovely figaro, hit her once, forget Ishmael
hail from the ash of the smog, no coughs for the sickness,
exhale the cash from Prague where i sought my richness
fitness for the hogs, seek to trash my name, send em running,
slick is the way i clog up their cache, could say i’m stuntin’
evil like knievel, flashy as his jumpsuit,
weasel out illegal lassies, he’ll stump soon
dump deliveries down, done decent dros,
dojo done dime a dozen, diesel dropped in dirty doses
hook:
dump that diesel in the tank,
pump the easel full of dank
make the word art pop like a magazine collage,
take a third off the track, save for the montage
jump over the needle covered in swank,
bump the eagle off his flank,
my words strike you like a verbal barrage,
making your peace with a good mirage
verse 2:
cloaked the dagger, i croaked your jagger,
then i toked the shwagger, cuz i smoked the blabber
choked the tagger, pressed his cannon to the wall,
blew a couple puffs out before he dropped the ball
lost his marbles while he struggled and gargled,
sloshed like the marshall, but he smuggled the cuadro
new coke, all interest lost, don’t tell the bank,
you broke, simplest cost, go to hell, thanks
shit sewed so simply, set sale so small,
tricked and towed, taught to tell tenacious tales tall
short attention spans, like Gen Alpha on 60 Seconds,
export pension grands to Valhalla, no shifty weapons
Odin puts rings on all the bitches’ fingers, infinite,
show them wings on all his riches, ringers intimate
wings like Hermes, don’t shoot the messenger,
don’t give him a Red Bull, remember the pensioner
hook:
verse 3:
i’ll paint your body with blood from your exit wounds,
faint for a John Doe from the hood, doc says it’s doomed
rained like a monsoon, Big Bog came back full force,
he trained the storms to hit hard, named them Bull Horse
hull of the ship cracked, sink deeper than your love life,
skull and ribs cracked by bones of leaders of strife
the structure more rigid than the beat, meat under heat,
puncture with the thermo probe, no repeat defeat
pleated Homme jacket, soaked in rain water,
heated in the placket, smoked the main talker
greeted thirty maggots, doped brain not stronger,
cheated curvy black chicks, revoked a million dollars
treat you like a junky at Thanksgiving, cold turkey,
i’ll leave you shook worse than methadone, lone journey
verses so cold, gotta give you the OJ, no gloves,
turkey noodle soup out of stock, okay, low doves
bridge:
hey blud, we need to liquidate our assets
no duds, the sweeper intimidate the brassets
lost my head, cost my friend, all alone,
dropped the bread, tossed the lead, call Ramone
i think it’s safe to say the story’s gone off the rail,
like the tall tale from bar thirty four, soft and frail
always wear a ski mask when the ugly mug rob the bank,
reclaim your assets, unless you wanna walk the plank
verse 4:
pirate my music, cuz i don’t give a fuck about my label,
irate, i’m too sick, i won’t live to duck another cable
tables turned like a lazy susan Marantz, food for thought,
cradle learned how to make my gats, screwed a lot
i’ll facetime ya momma, funeral’s closed casket,
no base line for commas, numeral’s composed tax cuts
can’t afford to bury ya, leave ya to the elements,
absurd to carry a beaver for no emphasis
no emphasis on your life, less worth than a common seven inch,
no nemesis is less than this, you’re nobody, don’t question this
the doctor said i’d die lit if i kept the spliff tucked ‘tween my lips,
hit the cherry in the pit til i’m fit to spit a crit, clean my rips
you puff the blunt like a one hit wonder, call you Afroman,
take me out cuz i swiped the lean back, call it my bad day, agro clan
plan to take my methods, i’ll make sure you’re threw aside,
cuz when i’m through with you, you’ll contemplate suicide

2024.05.18 23:48 MagicHour91 Fixing the Action Movie Scene Draft

While I still enjoyed listening to our favorite podders talk action flicks, I think the action movie scene draft was a bit of a misfire. Particularly, the categories didn’t lend themselves to much debate, and the system of drafting with the multiple picks get disjointed. I do think it’s a great concept, so I came up with some different categories that would make it more interesting. So away with the two picks per decade, and in with the following:
Firefight Scene (Anything with guns that be a shooting, i.e. John Wick in the club, Neo & Trinity in the lobby)
Martial Arts Scene (Hallway fight scene in Oldboy, Rama & Andi vs. Mad Dog in Raid: Redemption, anything Jackie Chan does in Drunken Master)
Western Shootout (Climax of the Wild Bunch, climax of the new 3:10 to Yuma, final standoff in the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly)
Chase Sequence (Car chase in the French Connection, Nice car chase in Ronin, Butch & Cassidy evade posse to the waterfall, the entirety of Fury Road)
Heist Sequence (Downtown LA in Heat, the Nun heist in The Town, even the opening scene of The Dark Knight)
Comic Book Scene (Elevator fight in The Winter Soldier, Joker’s escape in The Dark Knight, vampire club scene in Blade)
Sci-fi Action Scene (Marines first encounter xenomorphs in Aliens, Arnold vs the Predator, Darth Vader in Rogue One)
Period/Sword&Sandal Movie Action Scene (Opening scene of Gladiator, village raid in The Northman, ambush scene in Last of the Mohicans)
War Scene (This one might be a little tricky, because they’re not always “fun” BUT Omaha beach scene in Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawks go down in uh Black Hawk Down, beach bombing in Dunkirk)
WILDCARD (Trinity test in Oppenheimer perhaps? Titanic sinking, maybe?)
10 categories, one pick per round like normal. There’s definitely plenty of wiggle room with categories, like where to put the heist sequence in The Dark Knight. I’d also say movies should only be selected once, but whatever I’m not God, pick how you want.
And finally, put Van on this pod. And Shea Serrano if he’s willing to make a quick reunion.
What do you all think? Would you add any categories? And let me see the picks of the people, please share!

2024.05.18 22:12 pipecito2112 2024, just wondering, WOLVERINE will back to his blue&yellow threads?

Just wonder about it, saw some art from upcoming marvel comics events and previews of summer issues about x-men and all that stuff.
So, the brown & yellow costume krakoa themed will be gone? that one, and the John Romita Jr's Enemy of the state are the best costumes for Logan, in my opinion.
Oh, 1st post here, btw!!

2024.05.18 20:54 Yarbles The Official Report of the April RVA Reddit (no we haven't) Bookclub

We met up on a rainy Sunday about a month ago and talked about some books. Our pick this month was Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn, because Assaulty wanted to read a story from an elderly perspective. The characters in this one were not really elderly - they were maybe 60 - but that's an advanced age for an international assassin. It seemed like most people liked it, though it's not everyone's preferred genre. It did resolve itself really well. I thought there were maybe too many main characters stuffed into a shorter book. The_OG_Bert liked the cold hearted professionalism the ladies conducted their business, they really leaned on their experience to their advantage. At one point they compared notes about the best vein to open up for a discrete kill.
Asterion7 brought a bunch of books he had read to pass out including The Wolf Den by Elodie Harper Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention—and How to Think Deeply Again by Johann Hari, and Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel. He also had The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories, which someone had brought to a previous meeting. Maybe that guy will get it back some time. He's finishing and really liked Menewood by Nicola Griffith, the second of the Light of the World series. He and Skyverbyver talked visiting Pompeii and going to museums there that really made The Wolf Den that much more interesting.
Assaulty did the same thing - brought a bunch of books in an attempt to declutter a bit. She shared Still Life with Bones by Alexa Hagerty, No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy, The Moor's Account by Laila Lalami, and The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. These are all exceptionally good books. She spent the most time on Ruth Ozecki's The Book of Form and Emptiness, and it sounded interesting enough for us to add it to our list. She also talked about other Ruth Ozecki books including My Year of Meats.
The Book of Form and Emptiness is about a neurodivergent kid, and Ozecki weaves in pop references and talks about education and mental conditions. But she approaches these conditions not as tragedies, but as new opportunities for perspective. It has themes about hoarding and decluttering, and even has a positive things to say about schizophrenia. She read Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton, Richmond's Unhealed History by Benjamin Campbell, and The Hundred Years' War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi, saying that the Ottoman Empire part was particularly interesting; and recommends In Memorium by Alice Wynn, about a couple of gay friends who bonded over a shared love of poetry going off the fight World War Uno.
Aimee tends not to pick up a lot of Contemporary Fiction, so she was not likely to get much from Killers of a Certain Age. She talked about The Fig Tree by Goran Vojnović with Olivia Hellewell translating, and a few other books like The Power by Naomi Alderman and is reading the Silo compilation by Hugh Howley. Coconut_sorbet read the three books in the Remembrance of Earth's Past series starting with The Three-Body Problem, and said while they are incredibly heavy and hard to wade through, it's totally worth it. Apparently the fourth book is a fan fiction that someone sent the author and he supported it enough for it to be published.
The_OG_Bert read The House is on Fire by Rachel Beanland, which is about a Richmond Theater kinda near where MCV is now that apparently burned down, and has been working through The Lord of the Rings. He's finding the audiobooks to be a really good way to experiencing the story, but found that the library doesn't always provide the narrator that you like, and that can ruin the flow. Skyver read Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole, a romantasy that leaves you hanging at book 3.
Aurora has mostly been reading award winning books and we talked bout the differences between Hugos and Nebulas. One basic difference is that fans vote for Hugos while professional panels select Nebulas. Besides Killers of a Certain Age, she knocked out The Tower at Stony Wood by Patricia A. McKillip, which she says is YA but really good. Unfortunately the author passed away and Aimee brought this one in last time. She read The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez unique but dense, saying it's possibly a best book she ever read candidate. The themes are more about the oral tradition and how stories are told, and includes first-, second-, and third-person narratives. What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher; The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera , calling it a great Sri Lankan story but a little hard to explain; Translation State by Ann Leckie; The Water Outlaws by S.L. Huang, which is like a classic Chinese novel but with LGBT characters; The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz, saying the book had great ideas, but she didn't love the execution.
She liked Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh, saying it was the best novel she'd read in a while, so that could be literally out of hundreds of books; and Starter Villain by John Scalzi, who is a lot more popular than I thought. Muffin and Kim both liked this one, saying it was a popcorn read, but hilarious, and none of them wanted to ruin the experience by giving away the plot. There was also Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon by Wole Talabi which sounded like a lot of fun, being a heist story about deities working as independent contractors with the main character being minor nightmare god.
She told us about Palimpsest by Catherynne M. Valente which she read for a book club bingo contest, which both Skyver and Asterion loved. It's very weird, about sexually transmitted passes to parts of a city. The book has a lot of sex in it, but Skyver said it's not sexy or titillating at all, it's mostly a metaphor for addiction. We talked about In the Night Garden and several other Catherine Vallente books, like Comfort me with Apples, Space Opera, and In the Cities of Coin and Spice.
Incorrigible_Muffin read a few books: Recovery Dharma: How to Use Buddhist Practices and Principles to Heal the Suffering of Addiction, which teaches a series of quick, practical techniques; This is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone and Amal El-Mohtar; two John Scalzi books: The Kaiju Preservation Society and Starter Villain; The Other Significant Others by Rhaina Cohen, a series of case studies of deep friendships and platonic soulmates, trying to refocus of what society values to community and friends. She recommended a memoir by Rachel Willis The Risk it Takes to Bloom. The last one talks about becoming a woman, but missing those most important milestones in your life like your body developing through puberty.
She told us about You Dreamed of Empires by Álvaro Enrigue with Natasha Wimmer (Translator), describing it like a Bridge to Tarabithia but with time travel about anti-colonial uprisings; The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard, which she said was a mindfuck, but with interesting bureaucracy; and Lilith by Nikki Marmery, calling it lush and sexy and suggested you read it in a natural environment like a garden. I had brought in The Violence by Delilah S. Dawson for Assaulty to borrow, and Muffin said it is an excellent follow-up to Brutalities: A Love Story by Margo Steines. Aimee said it reminded her of The Power by Naomi Alderman. The author of The Violence Dawson got her start by writing Star Wars novels; I thought that was pretty cool.
We talked about Friends Don't Fall in Love by Erin Hahn, which is a sizzly slow burn, but funny; and A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid. But I didn't catch who brought those up.
We talked about the new series Fallout. I thought that someone who hadn't played the game might not be able to get into the series, but Coconut hadn't played it and absolutely loved the show - some of the scenes are right out of the game, and the nostalgia of the experience was the most exciting part of it. The show was set in LA, and I played Fallout 3 and 4 and New Vegas, and the composition of the scenes in the show looked like they were right out of parts of these games. Coconut also said that the Bad Batch star wars cartoon was straight up good storytelling. I've heard really good things about it, but then I look at the art and am immediately turned off. To me it looks like complete ass. Coconut agreed, saying that's the worst part of the experience, but it still manages to impress. I definitely need to give it a try. Asterion7 said the same thing about Xmen 97. Skyver is particularly excited about it, saying that the animated series is the only media that really follows the comics, and the comics were pretty awesome. She used an example: Mystique is Nightcrawler' father in the comics, but Marvel cowardly ran away from that gender fluidity in all their other media content.
Muffin was excited about Walter Goggins being in Fallout because of his work in Righteous Gemstones. Aimee is reading the Silo compilationand respects what the show did. Of the written series, Asterion7 didn't like Dust, and Coconut didn't like either of the second or third books, but both loved the first one. Most people who have seen it have good things to say about Star Trek - Discovery. I keep confusing it with Voyager. I'm not sure why, but I've always avoided it because of that.

2024.05.18 20:34 Prometheus321 The Most Buffyesque Show That Nobodies Heard Of

Having just wrapped up my umpteenth rewatch of Buffy but still seriously jonesing for more of that monster-slaying, high school drama fix, I started searching for something with similar vibes to scratch that itch. I went through the usual suspects like Angel/Chuck/Agents of Shield, but recently I've found something thats both radically different but also in the same boat . . . Fantasy High!!
Now, hear me out. Fantasy High isn't a Buffy clone (its literally a tabletop RPG improv session rather than a live action show), but it totally scratches that same itch. Here’s why:
Both shows are set in high schools, but not your typical ones. Buffy had Sunnydale High on a Hellmouth, attracting all sorts of supernatural chaos. In Fantasy High, we’ve got Aguefort Adventuring Academy, where magic and wild adventures are the norm.
Both shows nail the whole coming-of-age vibe. Buffy uses monsters to represent all those teenage struggles like figuring out who you are and dealing with relationships. Fantasy High does the same thing with its fantasy elements. While the characters are fighting fantastical creatures, they’re also dealing with real-life stuff like friendships, insecurities, and the occasional existential crisis.
And can we talk about the characters? Buffy had the Scooby Gang, each member bringing their own unique skills and personalities. Fantasy High has its own quirky crew, the intrepid heroes, and they’re just as diverse and lovable. We've got Fig Faeth, a half elf with a rebellious streak a mild wide whose going through a punk rock phase ; Fabian Seacaster, the swashbuckling son of a famous pirate whose cocky persona hides overwhelming insecurity; Kristen Applebees, a cleric whose having a crisis of faith; Riz Gukgak, an amateur sleuth Sherlock Holmes impersonator who can't crack the case of how to make friends; and Gorgug Thistlespring the half orc adopted by gnomes pm a quest to find who his birth parents. Thats not even mentioning the incredibly diverse and vibrant side characters brought to life by the fantastic Game Master.
Genre-wise, both shows are a perfect mix. Buffy is known for blending horror, action, comedy, and drama, with some killer one-liners. Fantasy High does this too, mixing the structure of a D&D game with sharp humor and some genuinely touching moments. It’s got that same witty, clever vibe in large part because the cast is filled with professional improv comics.
Both shows also love to flip the script on traditional tropes. Buffy is famous for turning horror clichés on their head. Fantasy High does this with fantasy and high school stereotypes, keeping things fresh and surprising. Its John Hughes 80's movies meets high fantasy which is similar to Buffy's 90's teen high drama meets the supernatural.
Balancing is key: slaying by day, cramming for finals by night? Fantasy High captures that whole struggle perfectly.
So yeah, Fantasy High might not be Buffy, but it totally captures that essence of slaying monsters, saving the world, and maybe even finding some high school romance... all while freaking out about exams!!
Anyone else binge Buffy and then immediately need a new adventure? Then check out Fantasy High!! Season 1 is on Youtube for free!

Bridgerton’s Jessica Madsen Beats the Villain Edit Vulture Devon Ivie

Like the loose swan in Hot Fuzz, Cressida Cowper and her long, slender neck have been gliding through ballrooms, wreaking havoc while trying to find a mate, for three seasons of Bridgerton. At first, the well-dressed pain in the ass seemed destined to be the show’s ultimate villain, honking at everyone while edging closer to spinsterhood with each failed year of marriage. But, as this current season reveals, our girl’s got some unpleasant emotional baggage that helps us better understand why she acts like this. Jessica Madsen’s character is the product of familial circumstances: an icy mother and unforgiving father who have no other children on which to fixate and have probably never said the words “I love you” to their daughter. “Getting away from her family is something that she really, really wants to do,” Madsen says. “And the only way she can do that is by marrying someone.”
Thanks to a new friend, though, Cressida begins to change her self-described “unkind” ways a little bit at a time. She and Eloise (Claudia Jessie) bond during a summer in the countryside, a relationship which continues back in London at the season’s various promenades and balls. Madsen believes their friendship, while unexpected, is genuine and one of the best things to happen to the insulated Cressida. It might even be transformative. “You have to be confident and in a safe place to be open,” she explains, “and it’s not safe around her apart from when she’s with Eloise.”
One of my favorite TV tropes is “let’s humanize this bitch.” Now that we’re privy to the circumstances around Cressida’s personal life, did it align with what you had assumed?
In some ways it did, and in some ways I had wonderful surprises. I remember stepping onto the set of the Cowper house for the first time like, Whoa. It really sunk in what was going on with her. I thought her house was going to be quite lavish, bright, and filled with velvet. I felt the seriousness of the situation. Both women in the house are controlled by a man. That was a wonderful contrast to what we’ve seen of the Cowpers the first two seasons, where they’re out and about and looking amazing and dressed in the best fabrics. There’s a sadness to their reality. It’s a heavy atmosphere.
I believe Cressida describes her house as a mausoleum.
We see her nursery and bedroom in the second half of the season, too, and they’re very dark and heavy spaces. It was a cool thing to see on Bridgerton, because, well, Queen Charlotte had some heaviness and reality to the darker side of things, and now we see that weight with the Cowpers. It reflects the time. These women were limited in what they could do and who they could be in life, and we see that in the family. I feel very sorry that she’s gone through this. I’m grateful there’s less of that in today’s world.
We see a lot of large families in the show’s universe; the Bridgertons have eight siblings and the Featheringtons have three. How does being an only child affect the way Cressida’s parents see her?
She’s alone. She doesn’t have another sibling who shares her family experience — she’s never had somebody to confide in or talk with. She doesn’t have any warmth with her parents. She grew up with coldness, hence why she’s cold to others. I do have other siblings, but they’re much, much older than me. I essentially grew up as an only child. I understood Cressida’s world when it came to that. But I had an awful lot of friends around me and I was very lucky.
There’s a lot of silence around her, so she’s not great at engaging with debutantes. You’re a product of your environment and sadly that’s what she has become up until this point. She puts on a sharp mask because a mask keeps her safe. She starts to shift because Eloise gives her so much kindness, and she feels safe. It’s not a shameful space. I think Cressida has a lot of shame, and when we hold shame, we can’t face ourselves or give ourselves grace, so we fight back. We don’t know how else to protect ourselves.
What does she feel ashamed of?
Any step she takes that’s a wrong step in her mother’s eyes makes her feel shameful of herself. Like, she failed her mom. Even that short moment in the second episode, we see a young lady bow in front of the queen and Cressida’s mom says, “If your bow had been lower and better, you might be married now.” You carry that. I didn’t do the thing I was supposed to do. You want to please your parents. We grow up and they’re our main caregivers. We want to please them because that’s how we survive — by having their love. It’s a toxic environment for her to be in.
Her sense of self has come from her mom and dad’s expectations. She’s really focused on trying to do the best for herself and what they would be happy with. She hasn’t thought much about herself and what she can do. We see her start to think about herself more with the friendship she has with Eloise, which shows she has the hope to start questioning things. When Lord Debling says, “I’m not fond of my family,” she’s like, Oh, wow!
It’s a turn-on!
A total turn-on. Let’s go! I can find someone who feels the same way I do! It’s an opportunity for Cressida to find somebody where she can be happier. That excites her and that’s what Lord Debling represents. My life can actually be different. I don’t think she has a full understanding of what love really is, because she’s never seen love between her parents. Love isn’t necessarily in her vocabulary. She grows a love for Eloise as a friend, so hopefully, in her future, there’s a chance for her to find love.
Why do you think she’s had such a difficult time finding a husband?
She’s not genuine. She’s going by the book and putting on a front in the first two seasons. Her mom’s in her ear all the time, metaphorically and literally. She’s following and performing that narrative, and not opening up herself and properly connecting with people because of it. There’s a fault in her way of connecting until she has this friendship with Eloise. If Cressida had this type of friendship years ago, I’d like to think she’d be in a completely different place.
Bridgerton often presents romantic relationships in the dichotomy of head versus heart, but friendships aren’t allotted the same level of analysis. Cressida admits to Eloise that it’s been a greater challenge, even above romance, for her to find female friends.
It’s true. As it progresses, things happen between them, but I find their friendship to be a genuine one. These girls are pitted against each other because they’re in a race to find a husband. They’re racing each other for the win. This is Cressida’s third season out because she hasn’t come close to winning. We see more and more weight put on these girls as time goes on. They’re in competition with each other, which is a really hard place to be. If you think you’re in a competition with someone else, it’s hard to have a friendship. That goes for any day and age. Women need to open up and connect with each other and be on each other’s sides.
Does Cressida even want to marry? Is she secretly self-sabotaging?
She wants to marry because that’s what she sees as the next step in life. You grow up, you marry, and that’s how it is. She hasn’t questioned any other options like Eloise and Penelope have. All she knows is what her mom has fed her into believing is the right step for her. When she does marry, it opens up a new world for her. She’ll get out of her house. That’s the first step: Get me out! She doesn’t want to end up with someone who’s her father’s friend, but she wants to get out. With Lord Debling, she sees she could find someone who’s like-minded.
Where does Cressida sit on the spectrum of villains for you? Is that a fair characterization?
I’ve always loved a villain. Look at the Disney villains. Give me Cruella de Vil or the witch in Snow White any day. They’re fascinating characters. But Cressida isn’t a villain in my eyes by any means. She’s a young girl trying to do her best with very limited information about life and a difficult childhood. She’s doing her best with the blueprint she’s given. It’s so complex what Bridgerton has done — I mean, there’s always movement with Cressida and she fluctuates; her sharpness and softness is part of her character. This season we’ve caught her during a time when she’s letting go of her toughness, that exterior is melting away, and she’s opening up. There’s a huge vulnerability under there. She’s struggling to balance the two.
Cressida has some of the most rigid and strangely contoured clothes on the show. Were you given deeper meaning to her sartorial preferences?
They’re amazing costumes and bring her to life. Putting them on is such a gift. They have a beautiful structure this season. We see her in this very dark house with a pink dress and roses around her neck, but she still has a sadness to her. I found the juxtaposition quite funny. Did you notice how she has beautiful coats this season? She’s maturing and getting older. I always envied Adjoa Andoh’s coats, and Cressida finally got to wear some. I felt like she’s coming into being a woman, growing up, and developing in a cool way. That’s shown in the clothes. I kept the corset this season because I love it. A lot of people didn’t wear corsets this time around, but for Cressida, I feel like she is a corset. She gave me a lot to work with.
That’s a lovely analogy.
She totally is. She’s a corset for herself, she’s corseted by her family, and society is a huge corset for all of the women on the show.
The neck corset was spectacular. You know Zara will be producing a knock-off in a few weeks.
Why stop there? Go couture. John Galliano.

2024.05.18 19:17 testeralex Fave moments in the show (Season 3)?

This season had me giggling and laughing at time.
My top 5 favorites in no order:
1, Penelope almost comically dying because she was too busy staring at Colin being a hero
2, The Featherington sisters and all the their talk of pregnancy (especially the insert!)
3, Franchesca and John just sitting together in silence... I had to pause because I was giggling in bed.
4, Their first kiss... when I say I teared up a little because of Pen! I didn't think it was demeaning for her to ask as I've seen some say so. Was it desperate? Sure but given her circumstance I'd say it's also empowering that she actually asked for something she long wanted!
5, Carriage scene (bonus someone pointed out that Colin used his thumb with his two fingers up when he fixed her dress because of yknow aaaaaah)
Honorable mention: Lord Basilio's dead horse, Pen and Colin talking under a tree in public (they're adorable, those leaves aren't hiding you guys)
Additional mention: They made me like Cressida
