2024.05.14 21:04 aerovistae Switched from League to Dota after 3 years, felt like writing up a comparison between the two
After playing League for ~3 years I decided to stop and learn a new game and now have been playing Dota for about 8 months. As I've been learning I've been comparing and contrasting them, and I felt like writing up my thoughts.
I'm not a high ranked player; I was emerald in League and I don't really played ranked in dota. It doesn't matter, since this post isn't about tactics/strategy or how to win-- I'm just talking about the differences between the mechanics of the two games and their clients.
Disclaimer, this is all about Soloqueue. Pro play is a different environment and many things are different. I'm just talking about the average player's experience.
In Dota's Favor:
- Much better tools for learning. The tutorial is better. You're able to click other heroes to see their abilities in-game. The guide system to tell you what to buy and how to use it, as well as how to use your abilities. League does have recommended items and recommended order for ability-leveling, but the fact that you can choose between different guides for different roles in dota is huge, and the user-written text telling you when and how to use specific items for a hero is also majorly helpful.
- The game is less punishing to learn than league, for a multitude of reasons. Don't get me wrong, it still has an enormous barrier to entry and a steep learning curve, but it's just less painful. If you haven't played both it's hard to relate. League has two 1v1 lanes and very little sustain - there's no couriers to bring you tangos and mangos. You have to walk, but missing even a little XP can be devastating, so leaving lane at all can end your lane for you. If you're new and you're laning against someone who isn't new, it is absolutely brutal and you basically cannot play the game. Everyone who ever learned League without prior moba experience remembers what it was like in those first couple months being alone in lane against people who have been playing for years - especially in top lane or mid lane - and just getting fucking demolished 1v1 and not even being able to play. That can happen in dota too, but it just doesn't happen as much by comparison. And while there are roaming supports in dota, there's no jungler role, a very stressful role which in league which often leads to that player being blamed for everything that goes wrong in a match.
- Way, way, way more interesting items. There are so many active items in Dota, and they feel much more impactful. Having a tool like orchid malevolence or eul's is just enormously powerful. By comparison nearly every item in league is just a statstick. The only comparable items in league are Zhonya's Hourglass (kind of like a self-only Eul's) and Guardian Angel (literally Aegis - the resurrection effect isn't as game-changing in league as it is in dota). There's also a couple of items that give shields (damage barriers), but pretty much everything else is just....more damage, more armor, more health, more attack speed, etc. The item selection is just downright boring by comparison.
- Way more beautiful map. It's not even close. Dota's map has so much going on. There's so many different places and different entities and landforms, and it's just beautiful. Trees, high ground, outposts, trails through the woods, a radiant side and a dire side, day/night cycle....League's map feels small, empty, and stale by comparison.
- Fights are slower and longer in Dota. You last longer. You don't get one-shot as much. It's nice. It can be very frustrating in league being killed in a half second before you can do literally anything, over and over, game after game (if you get a bit unlucky and are playing a squishy champ/role and they have one or more assassins).
- More team-oriented. Due to the prevalence of long-lasting debuffs from both items and hero abilities, no one person can really just solo carry to the same extent as in League. In my experience it's much less common to see someone 1v9 in Dota, and usually it's because the enemy team is just making stupid choices. In League it happens close to every other game.
- Built-in voice chat. This actually does come in handy a lot. Hate not having it in league.
- Turbo mode. This mode is just great. Wish league had it. Great for learning and testing and playing casually when you don't have time or interest in a serious game.
- Not having to recall (teleport to base for hp/mana) is nice. More time spent out on the map playing. Having teleport constantly available lets you take part in more plays. Couriers are great. It's awesome having items shipped out to you instead of having to spend time retrieving them.
- Better demo tool by far. League's practice tool is notoriously shitty. Being able to open the demo tool while you're waiting in queue in Dota is amazing. Can't do that in league.
- The backpack is sick. Love being able to hold 3 additional items. Just gives you nice flexibility with consumables and components.
- Neutral items. This just doesn't exist in league and I wish it did because these are really fun and cool.
- Agh's shard and scepter, and the talent tree. None of these things exist in League and they add so much and make the game much more fun to progress through.
- More late game avenues to spend gold. Buybacks, Agh's shard and blessing, edible moon shard, boots of travel 1 & 2, item sharing, etc etc. I realize it's fairly rare to reach that level of full build in ranked, but in low level games it's more common and especially in turbo and honestly it's just great to have stuff to spend the gold on. In league you hit the 6 item cap and that's it, any gold beyond that is mostly wasted. It feels bad.
- On a related note, it's also really nice how the dota items are useful already at their not-yet-fully-built stage, like how Eul's is a crucial item that doesn't really NEED to be upgraded to Wind Waker, but optionally CAN be later when you have the gold and nothing of higher priority to spend it on anymore. In League you don't get effects like the active on Eul's until you've completed it into its final form (i.e. Wind Waker). This means that in League, with rare exception, you don't really have much choice but to fully finish items one by one, whereas in Dota it's the norm to only build the intermediate item and not FULLY complete it until super late game if at all.
- The announcer saying "Holy SHIT" when you go on a 10 kill streak. I find this hilarious.
- Better ability tooltips. When the talent tree adds +40 damage to a skill, that skill's text is updated to reflect that. I love this. League has a lot of little issues with incomplete tooltips that don't tell you the full story of how an ability works. You have to reference the wiki constantly. I have to reference it SOMETIMES in dota (like I had no idea why Pudge's E could completely block the damage from his W until I read on the wiki that the rot damage is divided into 5x per second, not 1 instance once per second), but in League I have to reference it pretty much...uh....ngl, constantly. Even as someone who has played it for thousands of hours. Feelsbad.
- Better cosmetics store. League's just has a splash art image of a skin and a purchase button. You have to go to youtube to see how it actually looks, and you cannot try it out at all without buying it. The fact that Dota allows you to launch into the demo tool with any cosmetic is amazing and something League players would literally trade sexual favors for.
- Cosmetics for things other than the heroes/champions themselves. In League you can only buy champion skins. In Dota you can buy cosmetics for the ancient, the towers, the creeps, the map, etc. None of that exists in League. We fucking WISH we could buy that kind of stuff. Riot are you listening?
In League's favor:
- Better lore. It's not a contest really. League's champions all have names and stories that are placed front and center, whereas Dota hero names are kind of buried and infrequently referenced. They're more like archetypes than individuals with their own identities. I mean...there's LITERALLY a dude called "Anti-Mage." There's a dude on a bat and his name is Batrider. The videos and media around champion releases in league are just way cooler. Check out the fiddlesticks rework video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNn2F39G-6s
- WAYYYYY better champion animations and sound design. This is for me where League blows Dota out of the water. Go ult someone as Axe - he does a little hop and swing animation. Then check this out, the corresponding ultimate in League from Darius, at the 3min mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRu0IznjCSc There's really just nothing in Dota that feels like Jhin, or Ekko, or so many others. With rare exception, almost all the champions in league have aspects that FEEL amazing - great sound design / animations / feedback delays that are incredibly rewarding. Dota's heros are really fun to play and I'm having a great time, but if you put them side by side with a pretty large percent of League's cast, the animations of many of their abilities and movements just feel kinda flat and low-budget by comparison.
- Cooler duels. Dueling is a big part of league and it doesn't seem to be such a big part of Dota by comparison. Whenever a fight starts, people teleport in and it becomes a teamfight, or someone disengages and gets away somehow using one of the many items like force staff or eul's. In league, two lanes are 1v1 and the jungler also often 1v1s, so there's a kind of constant dueling and it really lets you find fun ways to express skill and mastery. There's only one item that will get you out of a sticky situation instead of many, and only a portion of champions can reasonably build that item in the first place.
- More 1v9 potential. Because there's so much less CC by comparison to dota, and champion counters aren't as hard as in dota, a single player can completely take over a game and win versus multiple opponents at once single-handedly. This can be really, really exciting and it's one of the high points of League that makes the game addictive.
- Having to recall (teleport to base for mana/health/buy items) actually can be kinda nice too, by comparison. It lets you take a breather and just look over the state of the game while you walk back to lane.
- Being able to see on the tab scoreboard what items and creep score people have is really, really nice. It's really fucking annoying in Dota having to click champion portraits to see what items they have, and if you click ANYTHING else it hides it again so you have to do it while standing still or moving in a straight line. Probably dota loyalists will say this is part of the skill of the game, but honestly imo it's just annoying/bad UI design that people sort of just got used to and became convinced was "part of the game."
- Skillshots! In Dota most abilities are just unit targeted or AOE, while disjointing does exist, aiming isn't really as big a mechanic. There ARE abilities you have to aim, which in league we'd call skillshots, but they're far fewer. In league skillshots are kind of the norm, and aiming them and dodging them is a huge part of the game and it's fun to do so and makes you feel cool when you land them or dodge them. Having nearly everything be unit targeted isn't bad, it's just different, but it is something I enjoy a lot in League.
- You can buy as many wards as you want. I hate having to share wards with the team in dota, and the store being out of them. I understand it's part of the game and managing that is part of the skill of dota, but I find it tedious and don't really enjoy it as a mechanic. Similarly, in League basic wards don't take up an inventory slot and instead get their own special slot like TP scrolls in Dota, which is really nice. It's pretty frustrating losing an inventory slot to wards.
- Manaless champions. There are a couple dozen champions in League that don't use mana, and many people enjoy playing them. Dota doesn't really have that.
- Simplicity. League has a smaller and simpler map, fewer mechanics, FAR fewer active item abilities, and more rigidity to its champion roles and how the game is played in soloqueue. Dota is kind of intimidating to learn from the sheer amount of stuff it has going on. Not everyone has the time or interest for it all.
- Rotating game modes. ARAMs (all random all mid: a constant 5v5 teamfight on a map that only has one lane in the form of a bridge connecting the two teams' bases and nowhere else to go) are pretty great. Dota's modes seem to be a bit more static and homogenous, but idk, it's possible I just haven't been playing long enough yet?
- Better champion skins, frankly. Some of League's skins are just amazing, and they ALL come with complete visual makeovers for all of the champion's abilities. While you can buy individual ability effect cosmetics in Dota, the options are somewhat limited by comparison. Any skin purchase in League will redo all the abilities to varying extents. Sometimes it's a small change, but higher-end skins make very significant changes. Dota does have some cool skins and a ton of cool minor cosmetics, but I would say League wins here.
Conclusions:
On the whole I'd say there's more things to like about Dota than about League just in sheer quantity of bullet points, but I love both games and I think they're both really fun. If Dota improved their lore, their animations, and their tab screen and League improved their cosmetics store and their map and added neutral items, the talent tree, and agh's shard & scepter, I wouldn't really have any major complaints about either of them.
I think anyone who loves one game could potentially love the other one too and it's totally worth learning whichever one you don't already know, if you have the time. Obviously these games take a ton of time and most people barely have time for one let alone two. But if you're young especially, they're both really fun.
It's pretty hard for me to see eye-to-eye with the people who love one game and ferociously hate on the other - it seems childish and kind of empty. To not find one as fun as the other, sure, that's normal, but to expend energy hating the other one and constantly shitting on it, that just confuses me. You can have a favorite while still acknowledging the other as a comparably enjoyable game.
One final note - one of the things I found most interesting about comparing them is seeing which mechanics are normal in one game that would be overpowered in the other game.
In League there is a champion named Zilean whose ult is to enchant an ally such that if they die in the next 5 seconds they're resurrected - basically Aegis, but on a one minute cooldown, for anyone on your team who needs it. Zilean would likely have a >90% wr in dota.
But then in Dota Nature's Prophet's teleport has a 90s/60s/30s cooldown and he can access it from level one if he chooses to, and eventually has a talent that removes its cooldown completely. Meanwhile this exists in League as one of the strongest ults in the game and with one of the longest cooldowns of any champion ability. Nature's prophet would have a >90% wr in League.

2024.05.14 18:11 azuredota The case for Eul’s Viper.
High 4k mmr player here (Ancient5) and I’ve been having a ton of success playing Viper. I feel there is a case to be made that Eul’s might be an absolutely core item on this guy after pike/shard.
Viper is one of the strongest tower melters in the game with his shard, however at 24 mana per shot, this will leave him powerless if a skirmish could break out. Eul’s has 10 int and 2.5 mana flat mana regen. This is a great QOL improvement for farming up with W but also making sure your mana is up while sieging which is super important for high ground.
How do people escape Viper mid game? With enough HP, it’s an easy TP away after getting viper struck. Eul’s has an easy no animation TP cancel.
Viper is slow. Eul’s has some nice added move speed which is rare for items.
One of the harder things to deal with is getting dragged into a fight with meat hook for example. Viper is very susceptible to this because he is slow and large. I’ve found getting gone on and then popping Eul’s on yourself can give teammates (in my bracket) just enough time to setup for a nice counter initiate around Viper who is a nightmare to deal with if you don’t take him down asap. This may be less useful in higher brackets due to higher skill.
This item builds into Windwaker which almost cures Viper of all mana problems. I already feel Windwaker is one of the most busted items in the game but not a ton of late game cores get Eul’s. Viper can get a lot of use out of this item. A nice little gimmick I found for taking hg is just spraying down the Tier3/racks with my shard and Wind wakering back to safety. There’s only one real answer to this which is Nullifier.
Hope you guys consider this in your next Viper game and dominate.

2024.05.14 16:46 RealRockaRolla How Important is Series Lore to You?
As TOTK has just celebrated its 1-year anniversary, there have been a lot of reviews, retrospectives, and discussions on the game and how it holds up. One criticism that has existed almost from the very beginning is the series' supposed disconnect from Zelda lore and history. Theorizing is obviously a very big part of the Zelda community, particularly among content creators on YouTube. It seems that a lot of folks were either let down because the game either didn't expand on existing lore or didn't do enough to explain the lore that was established (i.e. the Zonai). Some have even said it tarnishes and disrespects the legacy of what came before.
For me personally, the series' lore and history has always been fascinating but never the end all be all. Don't get me wrong, I really like a good deal of the series' stories. I used to love watching theory videos of how time travel works in OOT and how each game fits into a supposed timeline. When Hyrule Historia came out, I treated it as the ultimate Zelda bible. But as time has gone on, I've understood that the timeline is messy, full of inconsistencies, and subject to at least a few retcons. Certain games, even if they have a place in a timeline, also seemingly exist in their own universe and are never mentioned elsewhere (particularly the Four Sword games). To put it in further perspective, I think Wind Waker has the best story of any Zelda game but it's personally not even a top 5 Zelda game for me (I still love it though). I've always put more emphasis on gameplay, mechanics, exploration, and dungeons.
So for all the talk of how it was lazy there wasn't a better explanation for why the Sheikah technology is gone or what happened to the Triforce, I find myself wondering if it really matters? Should a Zelda game be judged on how it connects to previous history? Can it be judged on its own merits? I've always felt the biggest flaws of TOTK's story were logic gaps in learning Zelda is the light dragon and not telling anyone or the ending being too deus ex machina.
However, please don't take this post as a criticism if you consider lore to be a very important part of the series. What matters to me may not matter to you and vice-versa, and that's totally OK. If you were disappointed by TOTK's lore implications or lack thereof, I get it. I'm just genuinely curious as to what others think.

2024.05.14 16:46 HolyPierogi N64 Rom Hacks – Awesome “New” Experiences for Retro Handhelds & My Favorite Ways to Play Them
2024.05.14 16:12 bicebird Stock looking consoles with complete romsets?
Very much a thought experiment as don't have anywhere near the disposable income needed lol but wondering if it's possible to store the entire rom/iso sets for every retro console (up to 7th gen?) in a playable form without any externally obvious hardware changes
So flashcarts are fine because they use cartridge slots as intended but no optical disk emulators that remove the original drive or usb hard drives sticking out the back. The idea of being able to take them back in time to when the console was released and the average player wouldn't notice until they boot it up and see a list of every game is pretty cool, like if your friend's uncle actually did work at Nintendo this is the magic console they'd bring back from work
It seems the cartridge based systems are pretty straight forward, everdrives exist for all the popular ones and support SD cards which can easily store more than enough, i.e NES ~1.5GB, ~SNES 4GB, N64 ~16GB, although file system and folder limits might complicate things a bit?
Optical media is where storage sizes start to get too big for the 2TB max size for current SD cards, Dreamcast is <1TB but OG Xbox is >16TB so you'd have to swap to HDDs/SSDs, most of Sony's and Microsoft's had support for HDDs and there's tons of complications with ide/sata support and bios limitations but feel like you could mod your way around them?
The Wii seems bit more difficult as it's >6TB so too big for SD cards and not much space internally but especially if you removed the case for a 8TB 2.5 SSD you should be able to, possibly with some hardware mods but going by the amount of DIY portables that's definitely an option
Kind of pointless to include releases for every region and revision but guess you could argue there's plenty of games no one will bother playing so the whole thing is just for bragging rights. I just really like the idea from a preservation point of view of having like a museum where you can interact with the consoles the same way as when they were released but also play every game?

2024.05.14 14:19 Wonko___the___Sane A Rereading of the Havens Birthing Saga
Note: I posted a parody comment yesterday on one of Kelly's birth saga posts and some people kindly asked me to keep going. So, I wrote some more. Hope it raises a smile or a puff of air through the nose! Let's get into it...
Part 1: Shadows in the Candlelight
It was 8:20 PM, and all was peaceful. Geppetto was at his place by the fire, whittling a puppet—a simple fancy for my little Atticus, fast asleep in the hayloft above.
I sighed, laid down my hoop, and gazed through the rain-streaked windowpane at the impetuous treetops. Suddenly, my babe gave a violent kick, and I was flung upon the kitchen flagstones. A mighty gust tore through the room, pressing candle flames flat and ripping at the pages of my Bible.
“Geppetto!” I cried in alarm, but he was lost in his work. I gasped, staring at the candle Moonfawn had bought me that same afternoon (how we had laughed at its comical scrollwork and, as mirth subsided, danced with naked exaltation in the deep pools of our eyes). Despite the buffeting gale, it had remained lit with a steadfast flame where the others had snuffed out!
With throbbing, passionate conviction deep inside me, I knew it was the hand of the Lord who had stayed the cursed wind. And then I saw the blood-slicked stones, scarlet as an accusation, red and obscene like a harlot’s lolling tongue. Had Geppetto cut his thumb? Was this blood … mine?
“Go hence to the healer’s house,” Jesus said into my heart with a silvery laugh. “Find you there a surgeon, for your wound lies beyond a midwife’s skill to mend.” And at once, I was overcome with serene certainty that come what may, Moonfawn’s love would guide me through this hour of darkness.
“Geppetto,” I grated harshly, and he looked up in astonishment. “Saddle the mare and hitch the buggy. The hour has come, and we have a long mile to step this night.” Oh, Moonfawn! Where are you?
(To be continued)
Part 2: Ships in the Night
Geppetto lashed reins against the mare’s flanks, shielding his eyes against the driving rain and guiding us through the slow-moving I-80 traffic. I lay propped against a pile of macrame-bound decorative gourds in the buggy, wrapped in a periwinkle towel, though the clean straw Geppetto had forked in to soak up the blood was quickly turning red.
Floating in and out of a lucid dream, I could see Moonfawn’s haunting visage in front of me, but when I leaned in to kiss her pale face, she faded from my sight. Oh! You promised me, my dearest heart! You promised to be with me here at the end! Bitterly, I left another message on her machine, and tossed the phone over the side of the buggy.
“Easy now,” chuckled Geppetto, over the sound of screeching brakes and breaking glass. “That phone cost me three copper shillings! And see, we’ve arrived at the inn.”
He hoisted me from the buggy and thumped heavily on the iron-banned door with his gloved fist. I noticed he was still holding the half-finished puppet. Jesus again. It had to be, who else?
“Open up, in the name of Yuaha, Pentach of the Golden Isles!” he cried hoarsely. The din inside subsided, but the door remained shut fast. “Please,” I whimpered. “In the name of J.C. Penny, leaders in affordable home decor!” The door swung inward, light spilling over the street.
And there, in the doorway, stood Moonfawn.
I dashed headlong into her arms, relief and joy overwhelming me. I drank in her perfume, kissed her neck, and knew no more.
The door swung shut.
(To be continued)
Part 3: An Unexpected Guest
Moonfawn swept an arm over a table of the smoky inn, sending dishes of stew and tankards of ale crashing to the floor. She laid me on the tabletop and ripped the bodice of my maternity corset wide so that I might breathe. She laid a spring of palest winterfrost blossom twixt my breasts, to aid my breathing and share the poignant sorrow of the last day of spring. I whispered a silent prayer I had on my cleanest camisole. Jesus again. It had to be.
And so, at 10:50 PM the surgeon-general swept into the room. “What is the meaning of this?!” he roared. “This woman is dilated half a crown! And the babe is crying for brandeh, is there no one in this rom without cloth for ears?? I can see its wee face peeking out from here. Nurse! Attend me at once, this instant!”
Nurses appeared bearing silvery trays forceps of cold steel and several large bottles of brandy. I shivered, yet was not afraid. Somewhere close, I felt Moonfawns cool hand slip into my own.
Shrugging into his white coat, the surgeon general turned to me. “I’m dreadfully sorry about all this,” he mumbled. “Now, where on earth is that chloroform?”
“Not so fast,” someone drawled from a darkened corner of the inn. A figure rose, casting back a deep hood.
The room gasped in shock.
“Fraulein Fännyfärhht!”
(To be continued)
Part 4: Showdown at Dan’s Bar & Birthing Center
“Step aside, doctor,” the matronly lady commanded. Her hair was swept into a bun of iron, hard and cold like the flat planes of her face. “I have tended to this woman in eons past! I know the petals of her flower better than her own husband here,” she gestured towards Geppetto, and paused. “Though perhaps not so well as some.”
Beneath my swoon, I felt my face burn crimson in sweet shame, remembering again that night at Henley Manor, on the beach, when I was named Starchild in the light of the sacred candle. I gripped Moondawns hand tightly.
The surgeon general made a lunge for the door, but the Fraulein’s booted foot shot out and tripped him up, sending him sprawling to the floor.
“Let’s see who you really are, doctor!” I watched aghast as the midwife reached down to the hapless doctor’s neck and with one smooth motion, whipped off the indiarubber mask.
“Jesus Christ!”
There on the floor, grinning weakly, was Jesus, the son of God. A nurse moaned and slid to the floor, and lay there, twitching. Through the fog of chloroform, I gazed on his face in utter rapture.
“Hi, guys,” he said into the shocked silence. “I’m back. Uhhh… sorry, I got kind of held up.”
Standing up awkwardly, Jesus stepped to the table and faced Moonfawn. “I think the jig is up,” he murmured, reaching out to her neck. Moonfawn held her head proudly, eyes glittering with tears, as Jesus slipped off her mask.
“Marmee!”
Another nurse slumped to the floor, brandy glass shattering.
“You know,” said a small piping voice from between my legs. “I’ve been out for the last 10 minutes, and I could really use a drink.”
And that, my dearest friends, is the story of the birth of Tess Stickle, at 12:09 PM.

2024.05.14 13:53 JanitorOPplznerf Patch 1.09 is LIVE
Yellow Legacy Version 1.0.9 Bugfix Patch
We have a new 1.0.9 bug fix update for Yellow Legacy now live!
Old saves SHOULD work fine, however please save in a POKECENTER before updating. Not the League, not Mom’s house. A POKECENTER is carries the least risk in corrupting your save. You should again patch your own legally acquired CLEAN BASE YELLOW ROM, do NOT apply the patch to an already patched Yellow Legacy ROM. Please be smart, take a backup of your save before updating just to be safe.
New Patch:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ZIWtHvyn51snAM4lFJEyuDyLrLt-TF-i?usp=drive_link Github:
https://github.com/cRz-Shadows/Pokemon_Yellow_Legacy Patcher:
https://www.marcrobledo.com/RomPatcher.js/ PSA: Before you get started patching anything, load your base yellow ROM into rom patcher js (or a hash checker) and check the SHA-1 hash. The base yellow hash should be SHA-1: cc7d03262ebfaf2f06772c1a480c7d9d5f4a38e1. If it is not exactly this, you have a modified or bootleg yellow ROM and you will have to find a real one. Similarly the hash of your 1.0.9 patched ROM should be SHA-1: 5cedd531b157ccebc74dbaae25f7945711975624, again if this is not exactly this, you have done something wrong and should repatch.

2024.05.14 02:28 Shadenotfound [fanart] Wind waker painting by me
| The wind waker painting I’ve been doing to pair with my BOTW and Twilight Princess paintings. I might do another of them above the surface since this is technically BELOW ocean level in Hyrule. It’s one of my favorite parts of that game when you go there with Tetra. I also thought it’d be cute if the King was making sure they stay safe while they play in the castle gardens (which I just kinda made up) PORT IT NINTENDO AND TWILIGHT PRINCESS More proof on insta: https://www.instagram.com/p/C67bqcyszh7/?igsh=eW1lMG9vcDJ6YTZp submitted by Shadenotfound to casualnintendo [link] [comments] |

2024.05.14 01:22 piggychopchop [WWHD] I finally understand the love of wind waker
I’ve always loved the zelda series, and I have always seen people loving wind waker and it never made sense to me because on paper it didn’t seem that good. Never played it though, so I never judged it. Recently got it and am kinda deep into the game and I understand now. This is peak gaming. The dungeons are some of the coolest honestly

2024.05.13 17:00 Birdinhandandbush N64 Ports coming hot and fast
Ok so some modder has created a tool that takes the process of recompiling the N64 rom source code down from years to hours, so we can expect lots of lots of polished N64 ports to be hitting the retro scene. I'm a big fan of the Mario64 port already.
In the link below theres a windows and linux version of the newly released Majoras Mask port.
It'll be a while before I get to run this on my R36s as I'm travelling, but if anyone else gets a chance report back and let us know if it works.
Great news for the N64 retro scene though, the ports run much better than the emulated versions. Could be a major game changer for how we play N64 games, especially on lower powered devices

2024.05.13 13:17 GammaPhonic Anyone else think it’s really odd that they never made a Link to the Past Link amiibo?
| They did Link amiibo for the original Zelda, Link’s Awakening, Ocarina, Majora’s, Wind Waker, Twilight and Skyward. But nothing for Link to the Past, arguably the most influential game in the series. I can understand why they never did one for Zelda 2, Minish Cap and the Oracle games. Good as those were, they aren’t quite as fondly remembered by most. But Link to the Past? C’mon. submitted by GammaPhonic to amiibo [link] [comments] |
2024.05.13 11:18 sbourwest Will we ever see faster turn-arounds for AAA Open World Game sequels?
Whether you love them or hate them, open world games have built a huge audience of gamers, and we seem to be now existing in a vacuum where there's simply not enough open world games to satisfy this demand. As technology has progressed, it also seems to take more and more time to create these massive games. Many devs have said as much, saying that these big worlds take time to develop and create interesting content for. Yet the consistent criticism of many open world games is they are wastelands devoid of content, bigger with less stuff to do, more copy-paste formulaic quests and points of interest, the same building or dungeon stamped across the world, the same unique number of biomes or tilesets as the previous game, but now it's bigger so there's more of it. Also as technology has marched on, so have dev toolsets, where they can easily produce assets that used to take a lot of time, placing clutter, painting shadows, building dungeons, scripting events, it's easier than it ever has been.
The bottom line though is that AAA open world games have slowed dramatically. Look at some of these franchises by release year:
- Grand Theft Auto - 1997
- Grand Theft Auto 2 - 1999
- Grand Theft Auto III - 2001
- Grand Theft Auto Vice City - 2002
- Grand Theft Auto San Andreas - 2004
- Grand Theft Auto IV - 2008
- Grand Theft Auto V - 2013
- Grand Theft Auto VI - 2025 (projected)
- The Elder Scrolls: Arena - 1994
- The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall - 1996
- The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - 2002
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - 2006
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - 2011
- The Elder Scrolls VI - TBA
- The Witcher - 2007
- The Witcher 2 - 2011
- The Witcher 3 - 2015
- The Witcher 4 - TBA
Only including 3D mainline games for brevity
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 1998
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - 2000
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - 2003
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 2006
- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - 2011
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 2017
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - 2023
Even when we look at series which used to be nearly annual releases like Assassin's Creed have slowed down noticeably, with their newer titles often suffering from the most notably from lackluster content (wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle).
If you count in that certain studios like Bethesda or CD Projekt Red only ever handle a single AAA game at a time, the situation is still rather bleak, with the time between projects growing longer and longer.
The undeniable fact is that many beloved franchises which used to grace us every 2 - 4 years with new entries have become once in a generation entries (meaning console generations), with some skipping entire console generations.
The real question though is the demand for these games to be bigger, better, and prettier really the reason for this prolonged drought in many of our favorite franchises? People are still playing Skyrim, GTA:V, Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3, nearly a decade or more later, because nothing new has come to replace them.
While there's been some notable attempts by smaller studios or indie devs to make open world games, they simply fail to capture the mass market appeal that AAA Devs can manage to pull off with a large team making an open world game. Yet is it reasonable to expect fans to wait 10+ years between releases? While the next Witcher, the next GTA, and the next Elder Scrolls may be visible on the distant horizon, should we, as mere mortal beings come face to face with the horrible truth that we'll likely not live long enough to see another entry beyond that? More appropriately, can any game truly live up to the level of hype (that hasn't evaporated) that someone waiting a decade would have for a game?
