Flooded, forget it.

2024.05.14 11:15 casefilesofVJ Flooded, forget it.

Josh (M,16)
Back in 2011 in the big flood that swept the town (Gympie) we were trapped on the southern side. Because the place is all hills surrounding a river, it turned the town into an almost set of islands.
Our dad worked FIFO and was gone at the time, my older bro (18) had about 4-5 of his mates staying over, the floodwater came up right to our backyard that was usually grazing paddocks.
Home suddenly evolved into a lakeside party house. It was grouse.
We had a tinnie and a couple of canoes so we decided to make the most of the town shutting down and did grog runs and became a little ferry service, bringing friends and family and friends of friends back and forth and what not.
Half the town was submerged, The main street was completely underwater.
It was honestly like a holiday. A mud smelling holiday, but everything shut down and we had an unknown amount of time before things would return back to normal. The town was abuzz with people driving around their little sections seeing where the flood water levels were at now. It was a sight to see.
The cleanups always gross and it's devastating for some townsfolk whose homes and businesses were damaged, but we were young, no responsibilities and no assets lost, so it was fucking awesome for us.
So one night about 4-5 days into the flood, two of my brother's mates and I took the canoe across the ‘lake’ near pengullies bridge which was meters under. There was this weird patch of water that had been bubbling for days, it was around a fossicking field and the town's littered with thousands of abandoned mine shafts, so we speculated it was one of those, or a sewerage line, or a gas vent, but whatever it was the whole time it was flooded the water never stopped it's strange bubbling motion and it was straight up sus.
Now we don't know if that patch of water had anything to do with what we experienced. It could be completely irrelevant, but I wanted to add that in because we were close to that part of the water.
Now, this wasn't just like going through a lake, there were half submerged trees, floating logs/ branches and debris floating around. A time or two before that, logs had seemingly popped up out of nowhere and rammed into us. It was actually pretty dangerous if you weren't careful.
So anyway, it was night time and we were headed across the lake, we were just nearing the weird patch. Our destination was where the water hit the road, where our mates were waiting in their car parked up to the water's edge with a delivery.
So we were about 100 meters offshore when we hit something solid. It jolted us in the boat as we went from fast paddle to stop.
We continued onwards assuming it was just a big branch or something, and we slowly navigated through that area inspecting the depths with our paddles.
Then something between us and the shore thrashed at the surface of the water. Whatever it was, it was big to make that sort of splashing. Our mates in the car turned on their spotties to get a better look as they noticed it too. This in effect blinded us.
The three of us in the canoe stayed dead quiet. The land was so close, yet so far away. The big splash was between here and there.
We very enthusiastically paddled the rest of the way over and had a good laugh with the boys once we got on shore. They said the looks on our faces was priceless, but agreed whatever had jumped had been big and we speculated on what sort of fish it could have been.
We spent an hour or so ‘in town' before we decided to head back. One of my brother's mates bailed saying he was gonna chill this side of the lake and head back over tomorrow. Dog.
So it was Richy and me to brave the floodwater alone after the big splash. The others made sure to bring it up as much as they could to try and freak us out, but they didn't have to. The sort of fear that comes to you on water when you feel uneasy or unsafe is an instinctual primal one. I was honestly terrified but I put on a brave face.
This time we didn't have the headlights pointed over the water so it was darker and the world was turned to shadows, even the house lights on the hilltops were mostly out.
It was so silent, I remember the oars sounded so loud as they splashed through the water and try as you might it's impossible not to get drenched. My discomfort was through the roof to put it mildly.
We passed the weird spot and I began to feel safer. That was the creepy part done, now the other 800 or so meters. Yippee.
We hit another solid thing and did our careful prod and poke method to slowly maneuver away.
My oar touched something and it jolted. I don't know if you've ever felt that feeling before, it's similar to stepping on a fish at the beach. It's happened to me before with big eels during the day but this time I was SHOOK, mostly due to the fact I was in this situation.
I brought my paddle out of the water and began swearing profusely letting Richy know that I touched something and it moved.
We stared around the glass like water around us for a few breaths, then out of nowhere breaking the silence something rammed the canoe… hard. We rocked back and forth and kept it steady somehow. All my wildest nightmares seemed to be playing out.
Richy pleaded frantically for me to paddle. I was honestly just stunned and frozen.
I was reluctant to put my arms anywhere near the water, but staying out here we were sitting ducks.
I joined in Richys paddling, the lights of the varanda were off in the distance, we were getting closer. Then bang, whatever it was collided with the canoe again and it lifted the back of the canoe where I was seated upwards, the hit was hard enough to propel us forward a few metres.
By this point we were shouting out towards the house as we paddled for dear life. One more hit like that and the canoe would capsize and if that happened… It makes me feel sick just thinking about it.
My bro and his mates ran down with torches and were shouting out to us. Communication was intangible at this point. My ears were rushing, I was puffed and felt like I couldn't breath yet all the same I tried to convey that there was ‘a thing.’
On that last leg, nothing else happened except loud scraping and scratching sounds under the canoe, at the time I thought it was ‘the thing’ but later summed that up to the tops of bushes in the shallows. All the same my body clamped up at the sounds and I let out more swear filled wails.
We stood watching the water for a few hours into the night... from a safe distance. After I went to bed, my brother, Richy and another mate said they saw something splash again.
The next morning I still went out on the water, but only in the tinnie. I hate canoes and personally think kayaks are only for the truly reckless.
I was sitting on the veranda the next afternoon when I swear I saw something big bob in the water from very far away, it was probably just a log, but I swear every stick and shadow I came across felt like it was ‘the thing' from that point. I honestly don't even know what it looked like.
Straight up strange. Don't know what it could have been, but I personally think it was a cave monster from one of the old mine shafts and the mysterious bubbling swirl. Richy thinks it was a croc. The ‘Dog’ thinks it was just some sort of fucked up fish, my brother thinks WE were just fucked up. Guess we'll never know.
One thing I do know is… be careful near floodwater. You never know what lies beneath.

2024.05.14 08:54 spaceboys I'm not able to prioritize anything and it makes my life overwhelming

That's pretty it, I got frozen every time I have to make a choice that implies a lot of different options and possible results after making that choice, I analyze everything so I spend hours making a single choice and it steals my valuable time, at the end the choices are less as I spent time choosing and a) end up doing nothing, b) lose big/ unique opportunities or c) end with the worst choice as the time spent automatically left me with that one.
I don't know what the duck is happening to me and everyday is like life is becoming harder to go through as I have bigger, more complicated, more adult choices with more important implications...
Even when I'm embarrassed to admit it sometimes life feels like too much to me, if you know what I mean, I need my mind to stop and become easier or i don't know how I'm going to survive

Just got our first Jeep, a low mileage 2021 Grand Cherokee Laredo. Really like it so far, except the gas mileage. I see little ducks on the dash of a lot of the jeeps around where we live (Arkansas). What is that about?

2024.05.14 04:28 Godzilla-30 Does anyone remember the incident of February 23rd, 2014? [Part 2]

It is a man, old and scraggy. He wears a jacket that lays over the red plaid button shirt and blue jeans. He wears an old baseball cap and a pair of glasses. He yelled something to Dad, holding his hands up like he was pleading, although we couldn’t hear it over the truck engine. They talked, but we couldn’t hear what they were saying.
“Hey, what are they saying”, I asked, while petting Matt’s hair, calming him. The old man then put his hands down and came close to Dad in a cautious way. They seem to start having some kind of conversation.
“I don’t really know, hopefully, something good”, Mom answered. They talked for a little while, with daylight beginning to disappear, giving us a sense of dread, and making me more worried about what weird creature was going to show up. Eventually, the old man turned and pointed toward what I think is the northeast. They then shook hands and walked back to their respective vehicles. “What’s going on”, Mom asked as Dad got into the truck.
“Well, our new friend here invited us to dinner at his farm”, Dad replied.
“Does he have supplies?”
“Well, he says has supplies for us to make the journey.”
“Should we even trust him? We just met h-”
“Relax, he’s just an old man, living alone at his farm, feeding his cows. What could go wrong”, Dad countered. The old man then entered the truck that was running and drove slowly, expecting us to follow him.
“Alrighty then, but we have to be cautious”, Mom said, with her suspicions of the old man. We then followed the old truck along the dark, frozen road. It just feels like something is going to show up along the road, but nothing happened. Matt did eventually stop crying, but he is still upset about the Joe escape thing.
“Where are we going”, Matt lamented, with the prior series of events in mind.
“I guess somebody is offering us dinner”, I answered.
“Why can’t we just go home?”
“It’s only going to be a stop, like a hotel. After that, we go to our new home, I guess”, I said, taking another look at Matt and cradling to comfort him. “It’s going to be okay.” I stared out into the darkness. I looked to the sky from the window and I faintly saw something in the clear, dark sky, lit up by the waning moon. They were brilliant, green auroras that defy the bright moon, dancing across the sky like ribbons in the wind. The truck eventually took a right-hand turn into another road, with us following suit. I can see a bright, orange light emerging from a patch of tree. When we passed by, it seemed it was a house, at a farm, burning in a massive flame.
“I guess those people aren’t so, uh, lucky”, Dad said, taking a quick look at it before looking at the road. Passing by, we went on and continued to follow the old man’s truck. We passed onto another intersection until he turned into a driveway to what I believe to be his farm. Going into the driveway, I can see an old house, along with a dilapidated farm further away, barely visible by the headlights. The old man parked by the house, where there were a few other trucks there. We parked alongside the truck and we got out into the cold, near-silent night.
“Welcome to sanctuary, where all are welcome”, the old man bellowed. This is the first time I’ve heard his voice. Matt was the last to get out of the truck, slowly and clumsily climbing out of the truck.
“What’s your name”, my Mom politely asked the old man.
“Oh, I guess your husband didn’t tell ya. My name is Steven, but you can call me Steve”, the old man said, with some crackling in his voice. “I am very proud to host a dinner for you and your family”, he continued. “What’s your name, ma’am?”
“Oh, my name is Janice”, Mom replied, quite pleased at his politeness.
“Hello, Janice, and what are their names”, Steven asked, pointing to me and Matt.
“That’s my daughter Kate and my son Matt”, Dad said to Mom.
“Oh, what wonderful names for a couple of beautiful children you have”, Steve grinned. “Come, it is dangerous out here.” We followed him to the house, which looked like it had seen better days. He entered through the double-set door, the first a solid door and a screen door behind. Entering the house, it smelled like what you’d expect, old man. Looking onto the floor is made of glossy wood and walls with cracks, likely caused by the earthquake. It is dark in there, lit by candlelight from many candles, yet it’s fairly warm here. I don’t know why we went into the house, but Dad was right, Steve is just a lonely, old man. Matter of fact, there seems to be nothing wrong here, other than the cracks in the walls. “Sorry, the power went out. Had to resort to the candles. I knew my wife would come in handy”, Steve explained as he took his coat off. “Oh, supper will be ready right away. Had to use the fireplace to cook. Also, can you take your boots off?” We took our boots and set them aside. We went into what seemed to be a living room, with dusty old-style furniture.
“So, where do we sit”, Mom asked.
“Oh, well, follow me”, Steve commanded, leading us to the dining room, with a long, wooden table and six wooden chairs, along with their corresponding old-fashioned plates, glasses and cutlery, lit up in the candlelight. We noticed that everything on the table was covered in a thin veil of dust. “My apologies, the recent shocks dropped a bit of dust on the table”, he explained as he noticed us looking at the plates and moved into another room nearby. “Take your seats if you like.” We all settled onto the chairs, and blew off our plates of the dust settled there.
“When will we eat”, Matt impatiently said.
“Once Steve comes out with the food”, Mom answered. Matt sat there with a tired look on his face. Dad seemed to be in a better mood than before and it looked like he wanted to start a conversation.
“Hey, should we talk about something”, Dad asked. I then see Steve with a bowl and a silver plate.
“Here we go, may not be much, but at least it’ll fulfil the soul”, Steve said, smiling when he served us mashed potatoes and meatloaf. “So, shall we pray?” That came unexpectedly, as we are not too religious, but we were in his house and gave us shelter and food.
“Sure, we can do that”, Mom said and we all bowed our heads and put our hands together. Steve cleared his throat
“Thank you, Lord, for this good food to feed the soul in these hard times. I shall pray, in the name of the Lord and Jesus Christ, that these hard times shall be over, so we can get on with our lives. Amen.” We raised our heads and grabbed whatever food there was onto our plates. “Oh, there’s no gravy, so we have to deal with bare potaters and meatloaf.”
“Oh, not to worry. Thank you for the food”, Dad thanked Steve. We began to eat the food once we got it sorted.
“So, what brings you here”, Steve asked.
“Well, there is an evacuation order in effect for this area, so we had to go to Regina”, Dad explained, with Steve taking in every word. “So, we came from Strasbourg, we tried going south towards Regina, but we hit an obstacle in the way and we had to take another route, leading us here.”
“And we encountered a few odd things along the way”, Mom added.
“Huh, interesting. What do you guys think is going on”, Steve inquired.
“By the things we saw, we have no idea. Dinosaurs, devil dogs, hell pigs, the whole deal. I shouldn’t forget the earthquake. They told us a pipeline leak caused by the earthquake”, Dad clarified to Steve.
“Hmm… is that so”, Steve wondered. “Wonder what I think is happening? The Rapture is happening. Do you know how the Bible tells us of the end times? Good people sent to be with God and his kingdom, the rest here to suffer the Hell unleashed by Satan.” By this point, he was beginning to rant, but we couldn't stop it as we all began to feel tired and powerless. “So, the Devil will send his demons in the form of these illusions so that they can torment the sinners. It is happening, it is-” Steve manically continued as I drew towards blackness and his voice becoming less coherent. My vision is now all black.
I saw those same lights, but more rapidly than before. I then emerged onto the same clear sky, but something felt different. I can smell something in the air. I can smell what seems to be chemicals in the air. Looking down, I was terrified. Dark, grey rock in the shape of ropes and folds, similar to those I saw of lava flows on a volcano in pictures. This went on as far as the eye could see. I can see no tree this time, just the cooled lava everywhere. I then walked, feeling every bump and crag. I thought I walked forever until I heard a rumbling sound and woke up.
I am in total darkness. It is cold and it smells like cow manure. I tried to move my hand, but it seemed to be bonded behind my back by a rope. I tried to move my feet, but they were also bound by rope to the legs I tried to speak, only to realise my mouth was agape by a cloth in my mouth. I heard shuffling nearby but I could not see. It was then shone in light when Steve entered the door, holding a candle, revealing all of us in the same situation. I then can see what we are in. We are in that same wooden dilapidated barn we saw earlier and seems to be more damaged than the house, wood creaking can be heard.
“These sedatives are more effective than I thought. Maybe I should use them more often”, Steve smoothly explained, like he’s some kind of agent and began pacing. “Wonder why you are here? Well, I wondered the same thing to myself, why didn’t God take me to his heaven? When I first heard of the government telling us of those evacuation plans, I thought it was that, a leaking pipe. I began to notice things I couldn’t believe myself, at least at first. Earthquakes, weird creatures showing up, people disappearing, the whole spiel. I connected the dots. The Rapture is happening, for sure, but why me? Why was I the one left here on this Earth”, Steve calmly ranted, pacing around the barn, but it seemed to sound crazier and angrier the more he paced. “I thought I had lost my way. I’ve been unfaithful to God and his son. But, I realised that God always has a plan and he left me on this Earth to serve a purpose. I wondered what my purpose was until I had a moment.” He then stopped in place and calmed down. He turned to look at Mom with accusing yet crazed eyes.
“I’m supposed to keep the sinners here in line, to earn a place in God’s kingdom, or suffer in Hell. I know you are a sweet woman, Janice, but your treachery with Satan is over and I am going to do what’s right.” Mom then looked at all of us, with assuring eyes like that of an innocent yet caring mother we all know knew. I began crying and trying to speak through the cloth, but I was helpless to watch by. “Forgive me, Father, for what I am going to do.” He then pulled a knife from his pocket and plunged it into Mom’s neck with no mercy. I looked away once he did that, trembling, with tears pouring out and my vision glazed and I fell limp. I could see my brother tearing up, but he did not look away. I can hear Dad behind me, with his screams of agony and anger covered by the cloth. It felt like I was in slow motion, taking in every moment.
I then heard the chair, screeching as Steve dragged the chair containing Mom’s lifeless body towards the door, leaving behind a trail of blood. I couldn’t bear to see my mother like this. I shut my eyes very hard and hoped it would go away. The door then shut, leaving us alone with a candle, fearing what would come next. I stared at the candle, seeing it dance in the flames like a woman dancing in the darkness. Is this how it’ll end, I thought. End up dying to this sick man? My Mom was killed in front of me. I sobbed with that thought, then I began to think about the inevitable death of me. I hope there’s something after I die. Maybe I’ll see Mom again.
It was silent for a while, nearly no sound other than our moans. Dad seems to be fidgeting at the back of his chair, rocking it slowly. Looking past him, I shuddered at the glistening pool of blood, where Mom was last alive, could be my fate. I then see Dad release his arms from the back of the chair and remove the cloth from his mouth. He silently stood up and bent down to untie his legs from the chair legs. He then went to me and removed my cloth.
“H-h-how did you do that”, I silently wept, fearing that Steve would show up at the door and kill us all.
“My binding is loose. The old man probably took a liking to me”, Dad whispered. “I should remove your binds.” He untied them, releasing me, doing the same for Matt. “Now, we need to be quiet.” We then walked, quietly, along the painfully creaking wood in the near dark, following the blood trail, glistening in the candlelight. We cringed and dreaded each sound we made and watched the door in case it began to creak open. A few silent steps later, we made it to the door and we slowly opened it so as not to make any noise. What was revealed to us is nothing new, other than the blood trail continuing in the snow directing towards the back of the barn. “Okay, Kate, Matt, you guys run to the truck.”
“What about you”, I sobbed.
“Don’t worry about me”, Dad responded, giving me his keys and forcing them into my hand. “If I’m not back in a few minutes, leave. Don’t look back, take care of your brother, okay? I love you, no matter what happens.” He then kissed me on the head and ran to follow the blood trail. We quickly walked towards the black truck, stranded there for maybe hours. Getting closer, freedom is getting closer. When we got to a fair distance to the truck, I heard footsteps behind me and, the next thing I knew, I was knocked over to the ground into the hard snow on my face. A hand turned me over to give me a glimpse of a crazed Steve, his eyes wilder than before.
“Oh, yes, trying to escape”, he bragged. I looked at him, frozen in fear, like a deer in headlights and he caressed my face with his bloodied blade. “You do have a pretty face, but I’m afraid you are just one of Satan's creations, made to pull me to lust.” He then raised his knife in the air when a familiar side emerged, out of the blue.
Joe came and bit him in the arm that was holding the knife. Steve screamed in agony the moment he realised what happened. He shook Joe off and stood up to stand his ground. I stood up as Joe hissed and walked around the crazed being he wounded, not in fear but in aggressiveness. “Is this one of your pets, demon”, Steve screamed as Joe came in for another attack, but Steve countered that with a slash to the snout. Joe then ran away, whining, into the darkness. This sequence of events gave me the chance to enter the truck on the driver’s side. I had some trouble starting it, besides this is my first time driving a truck.
Steve menacelily walked towards the when Dad came barreling and tackled him to the ground. Dad was on top when he went limp. I finally put the keys in the engine turned it on and backed out, with memory serving me the instructions on such a vehicle. Steve pushed Dad’s body and stood up, but by that time, we left the farm.
“Turn back, we have to get Dad”, Matt cried, but I was very emotional, accepting what happened. I felt that, without my parents, I feel… useless.
“Dad’s dead”, I screamed at Matt and he began gagging uncontrollably in tears. I began to feel sorry for him. “Sorry, I, I don’t know.”
“It’s okay”, Matt sniffled. “I guess Mom and Dad are dead anyways.” It was silence for a few more minutes, tears welling in our eyes.
“Hey, our parents are in a better place”, I said, trying to make the situation positive.
“But we are stuck here, without them? Don’t we deserve to go to a better place?”
“Don’t say that”, I huffed and I paused for a bit. “I know we are in the, uh, right place now. Let me tell you something, once we get to Regina, I will take care of you, no matter what life throws at us.”
“What about Joe”, Matt asked.
“He’ll be fine. He probably found his girlfriend already.”
“Hey, don’t you have a boyfriend?”
“I, uh, I don’t have one. That I know of”, I spoke, bringing me back to Sam, remembering that she’s the only friend that I ever knew, and I left her. Without her, I felt alone, no one would ever relate. I began to tear up. “I don’t have any friends. I am alone,” I sobbed.
“What do you mean? I’m your brother!” I looked at Matt, and smiled, happy that he acknowledged that we were in this together.
“Thank you”, I thanked him. I slowly stopped on the road, just to hug Matt hard, crying my eyes out. We then heard what sounded like an elephant in front of us. We looked up to see a walking snow-covered brown fur wall with four pillar-like legs in front of us. Its curved tusks gleaned in the light and the eyes reflected in the light. The furry trunk waved around like a searching snake from a tree. We both knew what it was.
“Hey, look at that, a woolly mammoth”, Matt said, excitement running through him. At this point, we weren’t surprised.
“Yep, that is a woolly mammoth”, I added. The mammoth turned to us on the road, seemingly confused about where it was. It looked at our truck and seemed to growl, like an elephant. We are starting to realise this thing is becoming aggressive.
“Uh, should we move”, Matt asked. I remembered hearing something about standing your ground in case of an encounter with an elephant. I hoped it would work for a bigger, furrier version of one.
“No, we have to stand our ground.”
“But, it’ll attack u-”
“Trust me!” I then honked my horn and it backed up. It then rushed, then stopped, a mock charge. Eventually, it moved out of the road, disappearing into the darkness. We sighed in relief.
“That was close”, Matt sighed. I then continued to drive in the night, headlights leading the way. The road is bumpy, as noticed by every ditch and peak we hit, but surprisingly, Matt was fast asleep. I began to get comfortable driving and used to the road by that point. It was silent for a while until we hit a smaller intersection. That is when the truck shut down, completely and stopped. I tried the gas many times but with no effect. There is no light, nothing. It is near-darkness here, shone only by the moonlight.
“Shit”, I yelled, desperate to turn the truck on without much success. Matt woke up, confused.
“What happened”, he yawned.
“The truck turned itself off. I can’t get it back on”, I fretted and at that moment, Matt was just as panicked as I am.
“Why?”
“I-I don’t know. One moment, we were driving, another it just-”, I quavered, when I heard something rustle in the distance. We stood still, hoping whatever it was didn’t find us. I looked around, hoping to see something in the moonlight. I then see a long, walking animal. It looked like some sort of alligator at first, except for a dinosaur-like head. Once I strained my eyes to the darkness, my fear levels rose as I could see it walk on its hind limbs, with its forelimbs dangling nearly touching the ground.
It was wandering around on the road when I heard a near-crocodilian growl at Matt’s side of the truck. Another of those creatures appeared, seemingly looking into the window like a hungry bear, giving us a chance to see its scaly head. Its exposed alligator teeth gleaned in the light like knives, but more terrifying was the eye. Its serpentine pupil shone brilliantly in the light like eyes in the dark. It then ducked down, gave a hiss, and moved towards the other one. A few more showed up and formed a group.
“What should we do”, Matt asked. “Should we stay?” I looked around, hoping for another way to escape them without them noticing. I further strained my eyes and mentally mapped out the area. There is a cemetery on my right-hand side, a grain bin storage yard on my left and a series of trailers on the other side of the highway, which is ahead of us, from the storage area. There, I see a series of white, storage buildings, something we can go to and wait it out inside.
“Okay, so slowly open the door”, I instructed Matt. The click of the doors opening cringed us. We looked at the group, but there was no response from them. We then, as slowly as we could, opened the door and stepped out. Still no response. Matt then quietly ran to the other side, towards me. “Okay, we are going into the storage yard and go to the other entrance”, I said, pointing to the other right-hand corner. I wanted to get as far away from these things as possible before making a safe crossing. “Then, we cross the highway on the other side, run into the buildings and stay there for the night. Are you ready?”
“I guess”, he whispered, looking at me in fearful doubt.
“We are going to do this”, I whispered back. We then silently ran over, having to rely on our night-adapted eyes, to the corner, walking past the bins. We made it and nothing behind us so far. “We’re good so far.” We then crossed the road and noticed nothing. We noticed a tanker truck, leaking some sort of fluid across the road. I easily recognized it as fuel, based on its distinctive, sickly smell. I wouldn’t be worried about it if it weren’t for a collapsed light pole that is somehow still flickering with electricity near the area where the fuel would be flowing. We quickly avoided the fluid when I froze to see the group of the walking alligators, running towards us. “Run!” Matt tried to run, but one of those things appeared and clamped its jaws at the back of his neck. He yelped in pain and it took him down to the ground. “Matt”, I yelled, helplessly watching as the creature tore into him.
Matt reached out his arm before the others came to him, then a flash of fire came. At this point, I knew what happened, but I couldn’t even think before it exploded. It blew me towards the building, far away. I was knocked out for a few seconds before I regained consciousness, groaning in pain on the ice. I noticed something especially painful just below my chest. I reached towards the area with my hand. I pressed on it, more painful than ever and raised my hand, only to see blood, brightened by the fire. I realised I was wounded, maybe by shrapnel made by the explosion.
I looked toward where the truck was and all I saw was a blaze. Those things weren’t there, at least. I also noticed something else, too, there’s no Matt. I tried to look around for something, some sort of sign of my brother within the fire, but I saw none. I then wept, realising I had failed. I have failed to keep him safe. I have failed to give him a better life. I failed him as a sister. I could’ve done better. The thoughts poured in as tears glazed my eyes. At that moment, I failed to look around me.
I noticed a dark thing beside the blaze. I thought it was Matt, preparing to greet him back, even though I knew he couldn’t survive the explosion. The image became clearer and clearer as I noticed it was one of the walking crocs that, glazed by the fire, was coming towards me.
“Just kill me”, I screamed, preparing to painfully die to meet my maker. The creature was about to attack me when something large, silent as the wind, came charging and clamped down its massive jaws, filled with conical teeth on the hapless creature and raised it. The crocodile struggled before going limp with a crunch within its strong jaws. The big, dark and scaly monster that it is towered over me and is as long as a bus, possibly longer. Its large legs are a contradiction to its small arms that hide beneath its scarred, bulky body.
It turned to look at me with an oddly bird-like expression, revealing in the firelight numerous scars from battles I could never know and looked at me with its beady bird-like eyes, breathing out wisps from its nostrils like a dragon in the cool air. I recognized it as a creature I know too well, a T. Rex. I breathed heavily and sickly, looking at the thing, nearly expecting me to drop the body and go after me. Instead, it simply walked away, carrying its bloody prize with it, and steadily retreated into the darkness.
I then lay down in agonizing exhaustion on my back, thinking of the next step of action like I'm on a suicide mission I would never come back from. I looked in the direction of the graveyard and had one thought. I guess I am dying. a graveyard will do. I struggled to stand up, noticing my blood-soaked clothes and felt a broken left leg. I grasped my wound, limping step by step and enduring the sharp pain while shaking in the cold. Every step I took, I remembered all the memories, good or bad, that I had with my parents. My brother. My friends. My family. I eventually reached the cemetery and slouched at a tree.
“Guess I’m joining you, guys”, I said, speaking to the snow-covered gravestones, only to hear something. A familiar sound of chirping emerged and, lit by the blaze, it was a sight I can hope for. “Joe, what are you doing here”, I depressingly cheered as Joe went to me and curled up in my lap as if he were a cat. I noticed the new-found scar he had on his little snout, but I paid no mind as I petted him. “I guess you came back. Thank you so much for what you did”, I thanked him, not expecting such a loyal creature would be with me, comforting me, to the end, like what my mother used to do when I was a newborn. I heard another noise, this time a deep rumble.
I thought it was another earthquake coming, but it got louder the closer it got to me, becoming more animalistic only felt small vibrations I barely felt. Joe stayed put, oddly enough, as T. Rex, different from the first one, came. It walked towards us until it stopped short of us. It began to produce a low-pitched, bird-like purring, attracting Joe. I realised something, that this T. Rex is Joe’s parent. He joined the rest like him, whom they showed up and all chirped around.
The grown Rex then brought its snout closer to me, not to kill me, but to look at me. It did not reveal its teeth and was still purring. I put my hand out and its nose came close to it. It rubbed it against my hand and started to pet its cold, scaly skin as it breathed through its nose and put it on my chest. I rested my head on it before it pulled away. It gave out a hiss, but I knew it wasn’t that of a threat, but more of a thank you for bringing its small, sometimes immature, child home.
That gave me relief, as it felt like I at least did something for once. They walked away, along with Joe, towards the darkness amongst the gravestones in the cemetery. I glimpsed one last desperate look at Joe before walking beside his parent. I looked up at the sky and I could see all the stars, twinkling, and the dancing green auroras. I began to feel limp and felt the cold embrace of death coming over me, tears pouring out of my eyes. The sky then grew brighter and brighter, the stars faded into the light and I could see my family welcoming me to a new home. It then slowly went black, darker than a cave.
You would think this is the end of me. It wasn’t, or else I wouldn’t be writing this right now. I eventually woke up in a hospital in Regina. I was told I was rescued by a team that transported me while I was in a coma. The doctors said I was very lucky to be alive, as the shrapnel narrowly avoided my vital organs. After that, I was adopted into a new family, but I was only with them for a couple of years before finding a new job and moving out.
As for Sam, I don’t know what happened to her. I would like to think she is safe, somewhere else. As for my family, I think of them all the time. I was in a depressive period right after that. Eventually, over the years, I accepted that they were gone and went to a better place. For Joe, I would like to think he is all grown up, like his parents, and becoming the king of the jungle. I hope we meet again.
As for the evacuated area, it wasn’t some pipeline rupture that caused an evaluation, but an anomaly, with the exact reason not known. There are excuses for the claims of weird stuff going on in there, from disease to chemicals, to eventually a previously unknown geological event, but I saw through it all.
You may ask how, it's because I've been there. Take it or leave it, this is the story I have. As the decade came by, cover-ups were made to hide it, even walls were put around it. Since the incident, the exclusion zone grew from a mere 80 kilometers in diameter to 460 kilometers in diameter, emptying entire cities of the likes of Regina and Saskatoon. I had to move to North Battleford, by the recommendation from the same government covering it up, making me think that time will tell before the floodgates of truth open.
The anomaly didn’t have a name initially, however, over the years, everyone agreed on one name in particular: The Saskatchewan Anomaly.

The expanded version of my previous post. ____________________________________________________ The February Revolution was more brutal than expected. The region suddenly broke away Nicholas II abdicated like in OTL, but dual power was never established, because Petrograd Soviet thought of sudden and fast revolution and getting to power. This plan did not succeed, although they did not proclaim a new state , and the capital was moved to Moscow for security reasons. The civil conflict was frozen until the end of World War 1, when the October Revolution happened the revolutionary forces reached the new capital but Alexander Kerensky successfully defended it and pushed the Soviets back, also he was able to resolve the issues of the state and stop the soviet expansion and lead the war to the stalemate. The revolution did not succeed and resulted in Leningrad Soviet Social Republic breaking away. Also further destabilization of the republic gave other nations a chance for revolt and establishing their own countries(Ukrainian and Belarussian Republics). Which were accepted by international communities. Meanwhile in Germany and Austria the spirits of communist were hardened by the news that Russian revolutionaries reached the new capital and revolted against the Weimar Government, which resulted in formation of a German Socialist State with capital in Stuttgart. Meanwhile the country was so destabilized that people seen hope in Adolf hitler to stablize it again so the Munich putsch succeeded and put NSDAP to power. Because in this timeline the winter war will not happen and communist insurrections were connected with formation of new countries that were oppressed by imperialist rule overall opinion of communism is not negative. _________________________________________________________________ I plan to expand further on the timeline later.

2024.05.13 03:00 I_Drink_Dishsoap I sort of have feelings for one of my friends.

I (15m) have had a friend(16m) who I’ve known for 2 years. The first thing he said to me was “Wow, you’re really pretty for a boy.” We’ve hung out a lot, but we can’t go to each other’s houses or anything like that because his parents are crazy conservative Christians who don’t want him to meet up with anyone. My friend is gay, he’s pretty open about it and he’s told me a few times that his parents are pricks about it. Anyway, I’ve had what I thought might be a crush on him for a while, like maybe a year now? But I’d decided to ignore it because I honestly didn’t want to have to deal with that.
Anyways, this school year he was kind of complimenting me? Hard to explain, but I’ll give examples. One time during our spirit week, I had on a western cowboy-type shirt and He mentioned off hand that “Cowboys are hot.” And one time, a mutual friend of ours asked him what his type was and he said “Green eyes are pretty attractive.” I am the only person in my entire school with green eyes. At one point, he texted me that he liked me but deleted it before he thought I saw it and I let it be because, as I mentioned, don’t wanna cope with this.
About a week after that, I was out to dinner with my brother and mentioned him. My (slightly drunk) brother started bugging me about it and eventually I texted him that I thought he was really cool and did he want to go on a date sometime. He said he would, but obviously his parents. In the end, we both decided that we weren’t in good places for a relationship- him because of his parents, and me because I’m really just not great at romance or managing my feelings (I’m working on it)
It’s been about 2 months since that whole conversation, naturally we’re still friends. We talk a lot about our futures and what we want from life. He’s mentioned that he loves ducks, and has always wanted to raise them, but we live in a city so that’s not possible. I’m leaving school next year, so I’ll probably never see him again. He’s a really good person, and I just hope he’s ok.
In some other universe I would’ve loved to raise ducks with you. They like frozen peas.

2024.05.12 16:46 Formal_Barnacle304 Never take the bullet train to HeiAn

I'm from a relatively small town on the border of Myanmar and China. Lush green mountains surround us on all sides and most people have lived their whole life here. I always saw it as a peaceful farming town, one of thousands like it all over China.
Nothing really special about it looking from the outside in but those who lived here long enough hear whispers of a ghost town.
It doesn't exist on any map, and goes by many names, Hei Shi, Gui Dong, and of course Hei An. Legends say its a town full of cannibals that pick off anyone who gets too close, some say its just an endless field of graves that never lets you leave, and others say its home to the gates to Hell.
They could all be real or all could be fake. Very few people are willing to talk about it but I know one thing.
Hei An exists.
A few years ago I started a job working with the newly built railway station. We have one high speed rail that connects us to the rest of the country and it only has a few stops a day. My job is just making sure people don't wander off where they aren’t supposed to go but one day I was asked to work the night shift next week.
The person who worked the night shift before recently retired and they haven't found anyone to replace him yet. Probably due to not looking if i'm honest. We aren't a large city but people still need work, and this job is pretty cushy.
At the time, I had no reservations about taking up the night shift as it's basically playing your phone and making sure no one breaks in or so I thought.
I arrived for my normal shift around 8 in the morning. It was pretty empty minus a handful of people. A teller who sold the tickets, a younger female coworker who works the metal detector. Lets call her Sandy, and a few passengers waiting on the last train. Some of them seemed familiar but I can't say I know them.
"Hey Sandy, anyone give you any trouble?" I asked half joking
"Same old same old."
"How many chickens did they try to snuck aboard today?"
"Too many," she said, putting her hands to her temples.
For those who aren't familiar with the railway system, certain things aren't allowed to be carried on to the train. Some obvious stuff like knives, explosives, chemicals, and live animals. Though people tend to overlook the live animal part.
To be honest the chickens are probably less troublesome than most children..But rules are rules.
The first thirty minutes of my shift were uneventful till I saw this scruffy guy with a thin leather jacket and a small travel suitcase approach the security desk.
I didn't see him when I walked in and before I could see what he wanted, he swerved and went to the center of the station.
He stared up at the list of departures. A large electronic board over the entrance to the platform where people can see to check for updates. He stood there for several minutes, eyes never looking away from the board.
"Can I help you sir ?" I asked him.
no response.
I stood there a moment before waving my hand in front of his face.
He didn't react.
It was like he was in a trance. I wasn't sure what to do, if this was some kinda stroke or a mentally ill individual?
I put my hand on his shoulder.
Then he started screaming. His face beet red as I stepped back.
"Sir? Sir?! Calm down!".
He didn't even look at me as he tried to rip out one of the chairs bolted to the ground. His screams were incoherent and his movements frantic.
I looked over at Sandy who was on the phone with the police.
"Sir! Sir! Calm down so I can help you."
His blood red eyes looked at made, and he whispered one word
"Hei An"
before bolting and jumping the turnstile out onto the train platform.
"Sir?!" I went out to follow him but he vanished. He wasn't on the tracks, we only had two of them. No train had arrived, it's possible he ran off into the mountains that surrounded the station but he would have to run faster than the train for me not to see where he went.
"Is he gone?" Sandy asked me as I came in.
"I don't see him anywhere"
Sandy went back to talking to the police, and basically what they said was that due to the attack on the Kunming station a few years ago, they advised us to evacuate do to the possibility of a planted bomb and abandoned luggage.
We did just that.
For three days no trains stopped by our local station. They did a sweep of the building, the nearby tracks, woods, and found nothing. The luggage left behind, from what I heard, was just clothes and other normal things.
That kinda makes sense as it was able to get through the scanner but I also wouldn't be surprised if some details were left out. He was definitely mentally unsound, and I even told the state police that.
One weird thing that got me suspicious is when I mentioned he said HeiAn they turned to look at each other like they heard that before. I might be looking at things too deeply, one case in a billion and it just happened here. A not mentally sound individual spooked even more out of his mind by a local ghost story.
Nothing I needed to worry about. Nothing I get paid to worry about.
Things went on as normal and eventually I was scheduled for the night shift.
When I say no one was there, I mean no one. The front door wasn't locked and all the lights were on. The list of departures was empty so it was made since no one was waiting but at least someone who works here can stay so I can come and lock up. Hesh. The younger generation.
I locked up and made my rounds, patrolled around the platform and nothing. It all looked pretty normal lit only by flashlight on a cold windy night. Deep down I felt a sense of uncertainty, maybe even a hint of dread.
Toughing it out and quickly returning inside to see that it was just as empty as before.
A few hours passed and I started to feel at ease. I was just being silly, even if that guy came back. He Is just a man and I'm behind a locked door with a direct line to the police.
I chuckled at myself, I'm a grown man. I can handle myself.
As I told myself those very words the lights flickered. I was in near total darkness for just seconds but the ease I once felt washed away.
When the lights came back on I noticed an arrangement of flowers at the security desk. I walked a few steps forward and swore I heard for a brief moment the echoing laughter of children behind me.
No one was there.
The flowers were still sitting on the desk with a message attached. The message was in Mandarin for obvious reasons, but it was basically a love note addressed to someone I will call Lisa. I don't know any Lisa, and nobody who works here has that name.
The lights flickered three times before turning off completely. My flashlight refuses to turn on leaving me with only the dim moonlight coming through station windows.
Dead silence till a familiar click sounds. The bulletin board of departures and arrivals came back to life with only one city listed in bright red
HeiAn.
The board began to glitch and the words darted across the screen and broke apart. I just stared at it clutching the bouquet in my hands.
The sliding doors to the platform opened by themselves as a distorted voice came over the PA. I couldn't really understand what it said but I heard it. The sounds of the train pulling into the station.
I wasn't sure if I was just losing my mind or stuck in a nightmare I can't wake up from.
The front door slammed open and through the murky darkness I saw several shadowy figures by the door. They poured in one by one like they were waiting in line.
I stood frozen as I watched them shuffle by as if they were undisturbed by my presence. They looked like rotting corpses up close with tattered clothes and blank white eyes.
Almost didn't notice the hand on my shoulder.
I didn't look back. His grip tighten and a deep voice said
"Ticket?"
"huh?"
"Ticket, sir. Where's your ticket?"
I turned to face him. He looked almost normal, a young man in an old train station uniform. His skin was a pale white and his eyes unblinking as he waited for my response.
"I...I don't have a ticket"
His smile stared to waver as he asked "You don't have a ticket?"
"Yeah, I just work here..."
His eyes filled with rage as the skin around his eyes, once smooth, had dozens of crows feet and wrinkles.
"WHY ARE YOU EVER HERE?!" His voice boomed throughout the station.
"I..I work..."
He cut me off "Security!".
From over the door but one, giant jet black dogs with bloodshot eyes came out and snarled. A blood red liquid dripping from their mouths.
"We don't like dead weight here," the man said.
Before I could say anything he whistled and the hounds went loose trembling the walking corpses in their way.
I booked for the only exit. The train platform with the black as night bullet train. It has red stained windows and went on forever in both directions. The doors were open but I ran down the platform hoping to lose these hounds in the mountains.
One hound stood between me and the end of the platform staring me down as the rest ran closer and closer from behind me.
"Train now leaving for..." followed by a ding sound as the door to my right started to close.
I throw my hand in the door to hold it open just enough to squeeze my fat self through without being ripped to shreds. The door quickly slid on the hound's mouth.
The whispering sound it made almost made me feel sorry for it as it fell off from the train.
The train car was filled with empty seats and It was indistinguishable from a normal one. Except, the door leading to the car had a cartoonishly large lock and chain wrapped around it.
"Clearly not going that way" I murmured to myself.
Luckily, the.door to the previous car was wide open.
Peering my head through only to see nothing but another empty car but the door on the opposite side was open.
Slowly walking down the aisle like tip toeing over egg shells. I expected the worse but I found nothing.
one idea managed to creep into my mind.
"Is it endless?"
No... No. I couldn't panic if I start to panic, everything will get worse.
I took a seat as I clutched the bouquet in my hands.
One deep breath, two deep breaths, and three deep breaths as I listened to the shuffling of the train.
I pulled out my cell phone but it wouldn't turn on, neither would my radio. Panic creeped on the edges of my mind but I pushed it back.
Someone must be controlling the train. I couldn't decide if finding the person was suicide or not considering what happened at the station but waiting for whatever happens at HeiAn didn't sound much better.
I tried to get up from my seat but something was pulling at my arm.
the train was engulfed in darkness as a hand came over my mouth.
Struggling was no use as I felt like a fly trapped in a web. A whispering murmur played in my ear.
"sssshhhh".
I stopped and saw red glowing eyes from the window. one pair of eyes quickly became two, four, and then dozens in every window.
"Don't look at them" I heard in a whispering voice.
The windows started to flex with their high pitch shrieks and wails. Sounds that left a scar on my conscience. Sometimes when I close my eyes I still see their piercing red eyes and their shrieks echoing in my head.
When it finally stopped I didn't notice. I heard nothing but them and saw nothing but total darkness clamping around me. Felt like death, maybe even worse than that.
"When did the lights come on?" I asked over a mumbling murmur.
A hand grabbed mine, firmly squeezing. "They are gone now."
"Gone" I repeated as the world around me started to lose its haze.
Sitting in the sit right next to mine was a woman in her early 20s. Incredibly pale, and almost paper thin.
"What were those things?"
Her eyes drifted down from my face to my chest.
"Those are lovely flowers," she said.
"Thanks, but what the hell are those, The HellHounds?"
She looked back up at my face "HellHounds?"
"HellHounds, like demon dogs, dogs from Hell..."
she nodded but her eyes fell back down to the flowers. "Where did you get such lovely flowers?"
"They aren't mine."I said while giving her the bouquet with the card.
She started reading silently to herself. I got to stretch my legs and peer down the empty corridor. Nothing but seemingly endless trains cars.
Looking back at the woman from before I saw that she was crying.
"Are you all.." she sprung up out of her sit and ducked under my arm running down the corridor. She said something through the tears that I didn't hear.
"..Wait" I called out, chasing the only somewhat sane person who knew anything about this place. No matter how fast I ran, the distance between us only lengthened. a few feet away quickly became dozens till she was outta my view completely. Almost like she dropped under the horizon all at once. I ran and ran but never caught up exhausting myself till I sat on a new row of sits.
Panting, and completely out of breath. "the only person that seemed... to know anything about anything gone into the wind"
The train cars disappeared off into the horizon. It was pitch black outside and I couldn't see even a couple of inches in front of my face like I was swallowed into a void.
Those train cars are truly endless, my watch is stuck at 2:13 AM so, I don't know how many hours I walked. I might as well just stand in place. Dehydration would probably kill me in 2 or 3 days if this goes on. I would rather take my chances jumping from a 400 kph train than to die like that. Quick and painless, though my mom always said I was stubborn and that quality of ours kept me going.
All the train car lights started to flicker as the train slowed to complete halt. Taking my chances I tried to pull open the train door but it didn't budge. I was so focused on opening the door that I didn't realize the lights were.off till a pair of red glowing eyes peered back at me.
A loud frenzy of screeches followed as hundreds of red eyes peered through the window. I was too afraid to breathe, let alone move.
The sound of cracking glass echoed from behind me.
"Shit"
They burst through flooding into the room and I never ran faster.
I felt their breath on my neck and their claws at my heels. Never looked back a single time but saw thousands trying to break the windows I ran past. And then my worst fear. A dead end.
"What, how?" It's like the end of a train car just appeared in front of me.
They were at every window and quickly swarming down the passage.
No escape.
I turned around.
These things, I saw them but I can't really describe them. My eyes didn't understand what they were looking at.
Readying my fists as a blinding light lit up the entirety of the train car. I couldn't see anything but I heard them wrath in pain with the clattering of their feet scurrying off.
When my eyes readjusted it was as if they vanished into thin air. All the broken windows were good as new, and no broken glass. The only proof they were here at all was a nasty gnash on my arm. Must have gotten me when I wasn't looking, but at least it wasn't my throat.
I wandered.forward till a hand gripped my shoulder.
"Are you okay?"
When I saw the women.from before I had a mix of spiraling relief, and anger
"Your arm?" she asked
She banadged me up as we sat together in silence. I had a million questions but I couldn't ask them, I guess it was the shock.of what I just went through.
"All done"
I pulled my arm back examining the bandages.
"You're really good at this," I told her.
”I should be, I'm a nurse"
"A train nurse?"
"Certified and everything" she replied, not hearing my dumb question.
I looked at her, really looked at her. Flowers clutched in her hands and not a speck of dirt or wrinkle on her clothes. She looked like she had just left home and got on the train just a few moments ago.
"How long have you been on this train?"
She looked back at me as if she was lost in thought. A few seconds passed before she leaned back and sat forward.
"Do you have a working phone or anything?"
She didn't answer.
"Hey, I just realized I don't know your name. Mine is Tobey. You?"
Her face lit up as she looked at me. "My name is Lisa"
"Well, Lisa...Something about this train isn't right, Lisa. I think we better find a way off but I need your help to do that."
"Okay", she says as the scent of flowers hit my nose.
"Lisa? Like the name on the card?"
"Yeah my boyfriend sent this to me, I guess he really does care. Thank you for delivering them, I was so...Like lost before."
"umm..Yeah no problem. Now we need..."
A familiar ringing sound echoed throughout the room.
"Next stop: Hei An"
At this point I forgot this train ever had an original destination at all. Wasn't sure to stay on the train or risk getting off into what could possibly be Hell on Earth.
Lisa's face was one of muted dread. "Should we hide?"
Hide? I thought. The only place I could think to hide is under the seats and no way am I fitting in 6 inches of space in the most obvious spot ever.
"Where?"
"Anywhere."
I refrained myself from any sarcastic retort as the train speed indicator began to descend.
I ducked behind the row of seats in front of me and Lisa soon crouched beside me. I almost told her maybe she should hide.behind a different row but having another person next to me give me comfort. Probably a false comfort.
The speed of the train dropped and dropped till leveling off at 70 kmh. Everything was silent, even the rustling of the train was barely a whisper. My heart didn't dare beat too loudly.
The silence was soon broken by a slapping sound from the train cars ahead of ours. I couldn't quite place it till Lisa said "Is that footsteps?"
They became louder and louder.till they were almost deafening then it just stopped.
A voice boomed from the front of the car.
"Tobey, it's your stop."
"How did he know my name?" I thought I tried to peek between the seats.
"Tobey, Tobey, Tobey... It's your time to go." smacking the top of a seat with a baton. "You've been marked, and they're waiting."
What's he talking about? Whatever, it was. I bet I rather not find out and with him checking every aisle we did the only thing we could.
Run.
Lisa was the first to burst into a full sprint right behind me. I heard him grumble but I couldn't make any of it out.
We ran and I kept checking behind but he wasn't chasing. Distance just gave comfort. A false comfort.
Lisa screamed and my head snapped back to look ahead. He was standing in the doorway in front of us.
"You can't run away"
The slamming of the door behind us cemented that fact.
"Who are you?" I asked.
He took a few menacing steps forward "The conductor, and my job is too remove the vermin like you"
A few moments of silence "Then talk us home, no way we are going to HeiAn."
His covered his eyes before slamming his heavy baton into the seat several times
"You can't go back!"
He took a few steps forward and he swung at us just missing my head.
Before I knew it his hand gripped around my wrist dragging me closer to the open door. No matter how I struggled he didn't slow down.
Lisa sprung up and kicked him in the back of his knee causing him to let go of both himself and his baton while falling out of the train car.
Lisa extended a hand while another hand gripped around the door frame. Without a second to spare, I bashed the conductor’s head in with his own baton dropping him out of the quickly closing door. He ran alongside the train pounding on the door but it was futile and then he was gone.
Not knowing what to do next and exhausted I took a seat and looked over at Lisa. Her exhausted face lost quickly to my blurring vision.
Everything went dark.
The chirping of birds stirred me awake and my eyes opened to the blue cloud patchy skies.
“Where am I?” I said as I stood up. I was alone and a few dozen feet from the tracks surrounded by empty fields.
With the warmth of sunlight on my skin “I made it back.”
Editor’s note:
I did some research and found out that there was a body found on the tracks on the opposite side of the country. A woman clutching a bouquet of flowers, her name was Lisa Chen.
The article was dated 2021.
I don’t know what to make of this. I couldn’t find any other article and my head has been hurting all day since I got home.
If you can share anything you find about her, I appreciate it and thank you all for hearing me out. I've been feeling tired all day, it's probably nothing but I’m gonna go to the doctor’s tomorrow.

2024.05.12 09:21 calvalryman Childhood paranormal experience

I use to live in Riverside, CA. My mom, grandma, and myself lived in a blue house that was located in a fairly low income neighborhood that was surrounded by dirt roads, ranches, and tightly condensed homes (just to try and paint a picture). In my room upon entering from my door, to your immediate left would be my bed against the wall vertically touching that corner of the room. My room had all carpet flooring and every other night around 11pm-2am, I would hear someone begin to walk from my door, along side my bed, and end to where my head was. They would never pick up their feet so it would sound as if someone was dragging their feet across the carpet the entire way through where every time I would move, the dragging would immediately stop and begin back from my door and make its way towards me in the same path/manner.
Some nights, the air from my setted stationary fan (one of those normal, circular ones that did have the capability to rotate) would abruptly stop as if someone was standing in front blocking it. I would never be able to rationally come to the conclusion as to how that would even be possible considering the fan was stationary and the air had been hitting me just fine prior to it being blocked for approx. 8 seconds at a time. I finally told my grandmother and mom what I had been experiencing a few years after the fact and they confessed to me that one night when I had been sleeping over my uncle's and it was just the two of them, they had been eating dinner in the kitchen when they both heard someone opening and shutting my drawers from top to bottom. They both thought someone had broken in through my window and was one by one going through my drawers trying to gather as much as they could.
When they finally had the courage to get up and check, they opened my door and found everything in tact. No intruder, no mess, no drawers left open, nothing. They admitted they didn't want to tell me out of fear of scaring me which at that point, they didn't know I had been woken up by hearing someone drag their feet across my carpet every other night at 1 in the morning. My grandmother also came forward and told me that while my mother was at work and I was at school, one day she had gone to the kitchen to get some fruit when she looked down the hallway and saw a tall, solid, black figure walk right into my mom's room. She said this was the darkest black she had ever seen and that figure was so tall that it had to duck its head under the door frame to comfortably walk in. She said she immediately rushed to her room, locked the door behind her, and waited anxiously for us to get home. She even waited to use the restroom she was so terrified of walking out of her room.
The last thing we all experienced different times throughout our time staying there was the door bell randomly going off every few months. The problem was that the door bell did not work as the button was non existent with the wiring coming out from the hole where the button should be which is a cliche out of a horror movie. This is the only one where I can possibly think a more rational explanation can be thought of but given the context of what went on in this house, it's difficult to chalk up possible faulty wiring.
I understand there are skeptics and people reading this may not believe me which is understandable. I am someone who has always thought things through rationally i.e. a footstep on the hardwood floor can be the wood expanding through the varying temperature, etc... But there are genuinely somethings that I can not explain nor can I be able to sit there and think of a reasonable explanation as to why this or that happened and that small, blue house in Riverside is a testament to this. I haven't thought about this in years and the only reason why it came back flooding my memories was because my 2 year old son had began screaming bloody murder as I held him while brushing his teeth. He had been staring at something in the corner of the ceiling of my bathroom that wasn't there but I can tell something was there staring back at him just by the way he was frozen looking up at that corner.

Memory Transcription Subject: Hilsfeer, Thafki Immigrant
Date [standardized Earth time]: September 20, 2137
The second half of the walk back home was peaceful, soaked in the calm atmosphere that our little rest on the beach had evoked. I still have the faint taste of the banana on my tongue, with the yellow fruit easily satiating my appetite while also blessing me with its deliciousness. Honestly, I don’t know how Roesh could only find it ‘meh’. Oh well, more for me then.
By the time we got back home, dawn was truly over and morning had arrived. Roesh unlocked the front door and the two of us headed for the kitchen to put our new fruits and vegetables in the fridge. We still have so many to try, and what we’ve got should last us at least a few days, depending on how filling Earth’s produce tends to be.
Right now, the two of us have flopped down on the couch in the living room, recovering from carrying those heavy bags all the way from the store. Roesh is curled on top of one of the oversized pillows, while I’m splayed out on my back across the couch cushions. I let my eyes wander around the room, falling onto the bare, off-white walls. Everything in this house feels very new, and the scale of things in particular makes it all seem quite alien, but I can tell that in due time it will start feeling more and more home-like.
Eventually, my gaze falls down until it rests on the photos we’ve placed on the small table in front of the couch. My tail gives a small happy sway at the sight of not only our wedding photo, but the photos of our family and friends as well. Hold on a moment… we haven’t called anyone since arriving on Earth, have we? Well, I certainly have to rectify that, don’t I? I roll myself over and slide down onto the floor, walking over to retrieve the holopad. Roesh’s ears perk up at my movement.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling our families. Yours first or mine?”
Roesh groans.
“Let's just do my mother first.”
I navigate to our contacts list and select his mother. The pad rings for barely a few seconds before the call connects and Sinash’s face fills the screen. Just like her son, her fur is a faded shade of blue-grey, with relatively thick, black whiskers, although her ears are a little more rounded than Roesh’s.
“Hilsfeer dear, it’s so good to hear from you!”
“Hello Sinash, how are you?”
“Good good, I’ve just been waiting to see if you two got to Earth alright. Everything did go smoothly, didn’t it? How’s my little Ro-ro doing?”
Roesh’s ears flick in annoyance at the nickname his mother uses, but I catch the humoured twitch that soon follows. I turn the pad to face him, and he sways his tail contently behind him as he speaks up.
“Hi mum, we’re both fine. There wasn’t any difficulties with the trip, so we arrived on Earth safe and sound.”
“Well, that’s good to hear. Is everything going alright? Have you eaten?”
The two of us give an affirmative flick of the tail. I’m the first to speak up.
“Yes Sinash, we have. We’ve already tried out some Earth fruits, and they’re really good!”
Roesh tails bumps against the back of the couch as it wags with joy.
“They actually are quite nice. I had what was called a ‘pear’, which I think you’d enjoy, mum.”
Sinash gives a light chuckle. Although, I can’t help but notice something seemed a little… off about it.
“That’s great to hear… So uh, how is your new house? Is it alright?”
Despite her previously joyful tone, a small hint of nervousness creeps in. I shuffle over on the couch so that both of us can be in view of the camera at the same time.
“Oh it’s massive! Obviously, it was made with Humans in mind after all, but hey, we aren’t complaining, are we Roesh?”
He gives a small laugh as his tail bumps against me.
“Certainly not. The doors are a little annoying since we have to reach up to grab the handles, but the size of the couch, bed and bathtub more than make up for it.”
At the mention of the bathtub, Sinash’s ears perk up.
“Huh, so the Humans do have the concept of hygiene. That’s good to hear, I hope you’ve been making good use of it, Ro-ro.”
Roesh’s ear flicks in annoyance once more. We did use it last night… although the hygiene aspect fell to the wayside in favour of just needing some time to calm down after the day’s events.
“Of course mum, just last night.”
For some reason, Sinash seems to be in disbelief at that.
“Last night… You saying you haven’t had one today?”
“Uh, it’s still the morning mu-“
“No excuse! No pup of mine will neglect his own hygiene. Go on, have one now.”
Roesh and I briefly glance at each other.
“Bath, Roesh. Now.”
Sinash’s stern ‘mum voice’ comes out, and Roesh slides off the couch immediately.
“Alright, alright. Goodness, the tide’s got you in a twist.”
He stalks over to the bathroom, and I’m left watching him leave in confusion. A deep sigh from my holopad draws my attention back to Sinash, whose ears are drooping in worry.
“Sorry for that dear, I just… saw the opportunity. I really need to have a one-on-one with you.”
My confusion is replaced with a small swell of nerves. Sinash’s joyful attitude has faded away.
“Hilsfeer, how is he handling it all? The move, and the… neighbours.”
Oh, of course.
“He’s… making progress. We were both a little anxious, but we’re steadily working on that. Today, Roesh even spoke to a Human. He’ll be fine, trust me.”
She stares at me blankly for a moment, eyes slowly falling out of focus as she seems to sink deep in thought. Soon, she sniffles, her eyes beginning to water.
“I’m sorry, it’s just, I haven’t stopped fretting ever since you two got on that ship. There are so many things that can… for stars’ sake you’re on Earth! You are surrounded by predators. Even if they d-don’t eat sapients… I can’t. I just can’t. What if-?”
“Sinash, look at me.”
She rubs at the tears trailing down her cheeks and looks back up to meet my eyes. I hold her gaze.
“Do you remember when Roesh first introduced me to you?”
“…Of course I do.”
“Do you remember what I promised you?”
She stares blankly at me.
“Hilsfeer…”
“Roesh needed me. I needed him. There was nothing you or his father could’ve said, or did say, that would change that. Nothing has changed since then. There is nothing Earth can do to us."
The silence hangs in the air for a moment.
“…When he first brought you home, I couldn’t believe that he… But, when I saw the way he looked at you….”
She lets out another deep sigh.
“Keep my pup safe, please.”
I make sure my ears stand tall, confident and determined.
“You have my word.”
She takes a little while to calm herself down, wiping away the last of the tears. Eventually, she looks back up to me, her ears no longer drooping so much.
“Thank you, Hilsfeer… I’m sorry for breaking down on you like that. I’ll let you get on with your day before Ro-ro gets out the bath.”
I snicker slightly.
“Knowing Roesh, he’ll probably be in there for the rest of the day.”
She giggles slightly, and I’m glad to see her spirits being raised, even just a little bit.
“You’re not wrong. He’s always loved the water more than anyone else in the family. Either way, have a good day, Hilsfeer.”
“Bye Sinash, talk to you soon. Roesh and I are just a call away… and uh- please say hello to his father for me.”
She pauses briefly at my request, but gives ann affirmative flick of her tail anyway. The call disconnects, and I’m left staring at the blank holopad. I sit there for a moment, and eventually notice that the corners of my own eyes are beginning to water too. I wipe them dry, and turn my attention back to the holopad. I decide to call one of my siblings. I’m sure Riskasa would love to hear all about what Earth is like, after all, he’s been a little more… open to the idea of living among Humans than my parents have.
The holopad rings for a little while, and just as I start to think that Riskasa’s busy or something, the call finally connects. Immediately the noise of a chattering crowd and background music comes out loud and clear, revealing that my brother is at some sort of party or get-together. He seems to in the middle of dashing up a flight of stairs in order to get to a quieter area to take the call, his excitement coming out in his voice.
“Hilsfeer! I was just wondering when I’d get a call. How’s everything? How’s Earth?”
His attitude is a nice change of pace after the last call.
“Hi Riskasa. It’s all going well so far, Roesh and I are settling in easily enough. I see you’re already celebrating not having to see me in person.”
“Ha! Not everything is about you, yah narcissist. It’s Sunchi’s birthday, so a bunch of her friends are over.”
My ears flick in curiosity.
“Whose Sunchi? That name doesn’t sound familiar…”
Riskasa’s ears begin to take on a purple hue as he blushes.
“Oh, she is… uh… Well, after you got married… I figured it was time to step up my game.”
“You’re dating someone?”
His blush deepens, accompanied by a joyful wag of his tail.
“Yeah.”
My tail starts to wag alongside his.
“Congratulations Risk'! For how long?”
My brother’s tail falters.
“I uh… it’s been a while, since before the Federation collapsed. We decided against telling anyone in my family yet since she’s uh… she’s a Zurulian.”
My ears perk up in surprise, before sinking back down in sympathy.
“Yeah, I understand why you don’t want to tell mum or dad.”
He gives a dry chuckle.
“I knew you would. Two sons that won’t give them bio-grandpups. They’d be fuming. Though, they might finally get off my case about letting my little brother get married before me. I’m happy for you Hil’, but by the tides, you couldn’t wait a little?”
We both break out into much lighter laughter after that.
“Hey, not my fault you’ve always been too nervous to shoot your shot.”
“Is that so? I could’ve sworn Roesh once told me that he was the one who asked you out first.”
I guess it’s my turn to blush, though I quickly give a dismissing wave of my paw.
“Who cares about the specifics.”
With an annoyingly triumphant look, he readjusts the holopad in his paws as his ears flick in curiosity and whiskers twitch in excitement.
“Anyway, enough of that stuff. I want to know everything about Earth!”
I give another small chuckle at my brother’s fascination with the planet, yet another thing that our parents don’t seem all too fond of.
“I don’t know if I can tell you everything, but I’ll do my best. What do you want to know?’
“Well, last time we spoke you told me that you’d gotten a place by a beach, right? How’s the alien waters treating you?”
“Ah, we haven’t actually been able to go for a proper swim yet. Been a little tired since the move.”
A little white lie won’t hurt anybody.
“Fair, how about the beach itself then?”
“It’s nice, from what I’ve seen. There’s a big wooden boardwalk running along the sand’s edge actually. Humans set up their stalls down the middle of it during the day, and you should see just how crowded it gets.”
“Sounds awesome. I can’t imagine the sort of freaky things some of those Humans sell.”
“Hey now, I know the idea of them eating meat is a little-”
“Oh no, not meat. I’m talking about the frozen milk and stuff.”
My mind takes a second to process what Riskasa said.
“The what?”
“Yeah, weird right?”
I stare at my brother, stupefied as I try to simply fathom what he’s on about. Suddenly, his ears perk up in realisation.
“Oh, sorry. Should’ve probably mentioned that Sunchi joined the Zurulian-Human exchange program back when that started up. Her partner runs an ‘Ice-creamery’ or whatever, so I’ve had some time to come to terms with the concept.”
I pinch the bridge of my snout and sigh.
“Just when I thought Humans were mostly normal people… Well, thanks for talking, Risk’. I don’t want to keep you from the party much longer, so thanks for talking to me.”
“Thanks for calling, it’s good to see you’re enjoying yourself on Earth so far. Say hello to Roesh for me, alright?”
“I will, and you make sure to wish Sunchi a happy birthday.”
“Of course. Alright, talk to you soon, Hil’!”
When the call disconnects, the sudden silence of the house catches me off guard. I guess the sounds of the party had just become white noise. I put the holopad down on the couch as I slide down onto the ground, before heading over to the bathroom. With a thump of my tail against the door to let Roesh know I’m coming in, I open the door and peer inside. My husband’s face peeks up over the rim of the bathtub, looking more relaxed than I’ve seen him in a long time. Sinash and I were right, he really does love water.
“How long have I been in here?”
“Eh, not too long. I called Riskasa, and he says hello. Do you want anything while you’re in the bath?”
Roesh seems to think for a moment, eyes still locked onto me. Eventually, I can see a slight blush forming.
“…You?”
I let out a surprised huff.
“Someone’s in a flirty mood.”
Roesh ducks his head back down below the edge of the bathtub, calling out to me as he does so.
“So, are you going to join me or not?”
“Hmmm… sure. I might as well.”
Just as I take a few steps into the bathroom though, I hear something coming from the hallway. A strange ringing sound, reverberating throughout the house. Roesh swiftly pokes his head above the bathtub again, looking confused.
“The doorbell?”
Doorbell. Right, that’s what it was. That means someone is at our door. I send a questioning look towards Roesh, who meets my gaze. He sinks slightly back down again, looking nervous, but that quickly gives way to a determined gaze once more.
“Can you get that?”
I give him a happy, affirmative flick, and head back out of the bathroom. I close the door behind me, and walk over to the front door.

2024.05.11 01:11 TonySchiavone1 Why I snark

This popped up on my app for some reason and I thought it deserved to be reshared. It was originally posted by u/ daydreamingawaytoo over two years ago but is still very applicable.
www.reddit.com/fundiesnarkiesnark/s/Y8rhtetsoW
Why I Snark
People ask me why I snark. Let me tell you, it’s not for the faint of heart. It takes a special kind of soul, someone with real grit and a fluency in sarcasm, interpreting body language, and sleuthing skills. My kids will say, “Mom, I’m hungry, can you please stop making Duggar FaceSwap edits?” My husband will sometimes tell me, “Oh my god, I don’t know any of these people, CAN WE TALK ABOUT LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE” when I tell him all about Jill Rodrigues overstaying her welcome at Nurie’s. And oh, I’ve seen some eyerolls when I suggested our family take the trek up to Arkansas so we can drive past the Duggar house (for research purposes, of course) so I can snap a picture of the TTH. Maybe they would even see our coexist bumper sticker and reevaluate their ways!
But nevertheless, through all of the judgement and small-mindedness, I persist. Why? Because someone has to do it. Someone has to wake the public up to the absolute HORROR SHOW that are fundies. What I do, I do for the good of the world. When Joy Duggar posts a photo of her son playing barefoot in the backyard, I get a frozen chill in my chest that radiates through my entire body. What if he stepped on a pine cone? What if he accidentally ate dirt? What if the earth swallowed him up whole? If I’m not reminding these brain dead idiots that they are terrible parents, who will? I have the authority. My kids, Soleil, Jude Bader-Ginsburg, and Organica have never tasted cream, sugar, dairy, or gluten. They have never played outside. They don’t even know what a “hairbow” is. I’m not looking for praise, I’m just saying I could easily do the mommy influencer thing if I wanted. Instead, I actually choose to spend my time working and fighting for a cause. It’s called morals, something fundies lack.
It’s almost a full time job reminding these fundie women that they are not as hot as they think they are. Women are not defined by their looks. But let me just say, as a 47 year woman who is naturally thin with no wrinkles and who often gets mistaken for a 19 year old, I know a thing or to about style and looks. Because I don’t agree with their beliefs, they are fair game and not protected by feminism. It’s just the rules. And as a #girlboss, this extends to children too. Whatever it takes to wake these people up. If Feliciteeeeeeee wants me to stop calling her names, maybe she should GET EMANCIPATED and write a dissertation on why LGBT rights are human rights. My son was quoting Gloria Steinem at 8 months old, there are no excuses.
Snarking for the greater good isn’t just about the hilarious witty and clever nicknames, or obsessively following Instagram pages. It’s also a community. It’s a place where a bunch of likeminded souls can spend hours analyzing a smile, using our gifts as empaths to get to the real feelings behind what less evolved people would see as a “normal family picture”. Its the primal rage we all feel when we see someone smiling with their mouth open. It’s going to the grocery store, seeing a jar of pickles, and quickly snapping a pic with a chuckle because you know your fellow snarkers will have a laugh. Its the mutual horror we all feel whenever someone eats a cream based soup. It’s sending Karissa $100 so she knows her baby names are fucking stupid. Sometimes I sit back and think, “This is what it must have felt like at Stonewall”
I’m not an Avenger. I’m certainly not a saint. I don’t wear a cape, but I do wear my heart on my sleeve. Im a proud atheist, liberal, feminist, purple haired “devils grass” smoking “heathen.” My very existence is political. The fundies would hate me and run away screaming when they see me, a WOMAN, showing knees and shoulders, unshaven legs, tattoos, purple hair, and piercings. What about my shirt, that says “Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History?” Yeah, Boob would probably faint on the spot.
I’m a snarker, which means I wear many hats: expert on fundamentalism and religion, psychiatrist, social worker, medical doctor, body language expert, lawyer, judge, jury, parenting expert, stylist, interior decorator, nutritionist, expert chef, private investigator, activist....and warrior.

2024.05.10 19:55 nightmarewoman I'm 28, make $67,000, live in Central Mass, and I struggled this week

ABOUT ME
I wrote a money diary in October 2022. Since then, my boyfriend P. has been upgraded to fiance (we are getting married in July!) and my beloved Trash Cat has had enucleation surgery (we now call the vet “The Eye Snatcher”). I still work as a technology specialist in higher education. In December 2023, I discovered HR input my salary wrong when I first started my current job—the contract I signed stated my salary as $65,000, but they input it as $60,000. I got a hefty portion of back pay. I am currently making about $67,000/year.
P. and I still split expenses 50/50 (somewhat imperfectly) and do not have any combined accounts. We input shared expenses into this spreadsheet and then settle the difference once a month. His salary is about $75,000. He recently cashed out about $15,000 from a 529 plan he never used (he didn’t go to college) and will be creating a CD ladder with this money to save for a down payment.
ASSETS & DEBT
Retirement balance: $6,542.66 in my 403(b) and $2,688.03 in my Roth IRA. In my last money diary, I felt guilty about my retirement balance because I didn’t really start until the age of 25 and for a year my contributions went uninvested. I feel much better about it now. This summer, I’ll qualify for employer-matched contributions to my 403(b), which will improve my progress even more.
Equity: maybe one day????
Savings account balance: $1,291.23 in an emergency fund, $160.32 in a recently-started down payment fund.
Checking account balance: $3,052.37
Credit card debt: $4,651 on credit card 1, $0 on credit card 2. Unfortunately, I’ve had 3 major setbacks in recent months: Trash Cat’s surgery ($2,200), new tires/maintenance on my car ($2,300), and an unexpected hotel stay when P.’s nephew passed away just before Christmas ($1,000). P. and I split Trash Cat’s surgery and the hotel stay, so the total I’ve put on my card in recent months is $3,900. I was down to about $800 in debt prior to all this fun stuff.
Student loan debt: $75,000 in public loans for a bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in English. This was technically a “bad choice” because I did use my loans for living expenses during grad school, but I honestly do not regret it. I LOVED grad school, even though most of it happened online due to the pandemic, and I sincerely believe it made me a better, more thoughtful, and empathetic person. Since the university I work for now is a certified non-profit organization, I will eventually qualify for PSLF if I stay here or within the field of accredited higher education.
Car debt: I owe $2,754 on my Toyota.
INCOME
Income progression: I have worked steadily at part-time jobs since age 16. I’ve been in educational tech for 3 years; my starting salary was $18/hour as a customer service associate, which was around $42,000 annually with overtime. When I started my current job almost 2 years ago, my salary jumped to $65,000 (which ended up being funky, see ABOUT ME above). My current salary, after it was adjusted and I received a 3% raise, is now $67,000.
Monthly take-home pay: $3,355.90 after deductions
Side gig income: None. I quit tutoring because I started taking night classes back in the fall.
Parental Support: As I mentioned in my money diary last year, my parents contributed about $22,000 to rent/car expenses during my “adult” (college) life. My dad is also paying for our wedding “reception,” which is a private dinner at a restaurant for 15 people (estimated cost $5,000). I hinted heavily at Financial Trauma in my last diary, an issue I’ve mostly overcome thanks to my incredible therapist. I might write a more detailed post on healing Financial Trauma and my experience with it…let me know if you’d be interested in reading something like that :)
EXPENSES
Rent: $787.50 (P. and I split rent 50/50; our total rent is $1,575)
Renter’s & car insurance: $1,321/year, which averages out to $110.83/month (not split).
Health insurance: $394.46/month before tax for health and dental. Once P. and I get married, I am hopping on his insurance.
Retirement contribution: $257.50/month pre-tax into my 403(b). I also transfer $50/month into a Roth IRA.
Savings contribution: $200/month to emergency fund, $50/month to down payment fund
Debt payments: $260/month for my car payment, $60/month for my student loan payment (this is wildly low because I am on an income-driven repayment plan. Due to the ongoing Federal Battles, I have not had to recertify my income, so this payment is based on my 2019 income. I also pay at least $500/month towards my credit card debt. Since this is a three paycheck month (and my third paycheck will be a “deduction holiday”), I am paying $1,000 towards it this month. P. does not contribute towards my debt.
Utilities: P. and I split internet, water, electricity, and trash evenly: usually about $175/month for my half, $350 total.
Cellphone: $65/month (we each pay for our own phones).
Subscriptions: Spotify for $10.99/month, Hulu for $7.99/month, Monarch (web budgeting app) for $50/year (this is a discounted price; it will jump to $80/year next year). None of these expenses are split.
Gym membership: $36/monthly for gym membership; $500/quarter for personal training (not split).
Pet expenses: P. and I split this expense; generally $100/month for my half, $200/month total.
Therapy: $25/week (not split).
MONEY DIARY
DAY 1: FRIDAY
😴 7 AM: P. shakes me awake. I reluctantly get up, go to the bathroom, and change into leggings and a sweater dress. After I give Trash Cat his morning medicine, I kiss P. goodbye and I’m out the door. I listen to the Sinisterhood podcast on my drive to work and try to stop for coffee, but the drive-thru line is backed up into the street and causing traffic, so I skip it.
💄8 AM: I put on my makeup in the bathroom at work; this has become my new routine since I was diagnosed with sleep apnea because the extra few minutes of sleep are now a medical necessity. I use Covergirl skinmilk foundation, elf lash and roll mascara, and elf instant brow pencil. Sometimes I use elf lip stain (big elf fan over here) but don’t bother today.
😈 9 AM: I meet with the university’s academic technology team to help them set up a feedback survey for a new grading tool they piloted this semester. We also bitch a little about some difficulties we’ve had this week with faculty. An important thing to know about me is that I am a hater to my innermost core.
🥪12 PM: After spending most of the morning replying to emails, updating tickets, and watching budgeting videos on YouTube, I realize I forgot my lunch at home. Since digging myself back into credit card debt, I’ve made a conscious effort to bring my lunch to work and spend less on convenience food, so I’m pretty annoyed with myself. A quick trip to the library cafe yields a turkey sub, a green smoothie, and a giant cookie ($14.47). I eat at my desk while making some money moves (it’s payday!). $200 goes to my credit card to cover my therapy copay and the pair of Hokas I bought my mom for her birthday earlier this week. I also transfer $500 to my savings account. $214.47
👣5 PM: I pack up and make the short drive over to my friend’s apartment. It was a spectacularly unproductive day; if I’m being honest, I’ve been feeling burnt out and need a break, but I’m trying to save my vacation days for our wedding. My friend and I walk around one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city and catch up. We also go to Whole Foods before she heads to the gym. I grab some specialty canned beans, tofu, tortilla chips, Chomps, and some Poppi sodas ($35.23).
🐱8 PM: I eat one of my favorite lazy meals for dinner—refried beans mixed with quinoa, salsa verde, and shredded cheese with tortilla chips—and watch a few episodes of Home Economics on Hulu. I get sucked into TikTok for a little while before brushing my teeth and taking my meds. I go to bed around 10:30 PM while snuggling Trash Cat.
Daily Total: $249.70
DAY 2: SATURDAY
🚿 8:30 AM: Quick shower before changing into a blue sundress and a white button up. I do my makeup and feed Trash Cat. I’m out the door a little past 9 AM to head to book club.
📚10 AM: This month, we’re having book club at an adorable little tea room. We read Romancing Mr. Bridgerton and obviously love a ✨theme✨ so the four of us spend an hour talking about the book, eating tiny finger sandwiches, and drinking approximately 5 gallons of tea. One of my good friends from grad school, R., started this book club a few months ago and it has been such a joy to get together with awesome women on a regular basis. We also commiserate over family problems—R does a dramatic reading of an outrageous text from my dad before we go our separate ways ($38.10).
💍12 PM: I received an email yesterday from our jeweler that my wedding ring is done and realize I’m much closer to the jewelry shop than I am to home. I call P. to ask if he’d be okay with me picking it up. He is. I swing by the shop and try on my ring; it is so beautiful and fits perfectly! I wear it on my drive home and can’t stop admiring it. P. put down $400 when we met with the jeweler a few months ago, so I pay $821.88 to take it home. P. sends me that exact amount on Venmo. (technically, I pay nothing).
😵2 PM: I eat more of my refried bean lazy meal and watch some episodes of The Rookie on Hulu. The rest of the day is spent fielding calls and texts from my sister, brother, and sister-in-law about my mother’s birthday dinner tomorrow. It is bringing up ✨trauma✨ for all of us.
😴9 PM: A very lazy night routine of brushing my teeth, taking off my makeup with a wipe, take my meds, and drinking water while listening to a podcast as I fall asleep.
Daily Total: $38.10
DAY 3: SUNDAY
🎁10:30 AM: Roll out of bed, make some Kodiak protein waffles, and call my youngest brother, who is 22. He and I are very close, but I still carry a lot of guilt about how much I couldn’t—and can’t—protect him from. I offer to pick out a gift for Mom “from him” since he has to head to the airport to retrieve our parents and he agrees.
🧀12 PM: I go to a gift shop in the next town over and pick out a pair of gold vermeil earrings. They’re $225. I buy them and tell my brother to Venmo me $175 (so technically I spend $50). After, I pop over to Wegmans, which is in the same shopping plaza, and pick up quesadillas, seltzers, fried rice, and spicy chicken for lunch ($41.55 total, $20.77 for my half). $70.77.
🧼1 PM: P. and I eat lunch on the couch while watching YouTube. Afterwards, I channel my irritation into cleaning the apartment. I vacuum, swiffer, put away dishes, and wipe down the bathroom. P. takes out the trash and recycling and starts some laundry.
🍾4 PM: We meet my other brother (I have two—this one is also younger but closer in age to me, 27) and my sister-in-law at a bar to pregame for Mom's birthday dinner. Is this healthy? Probably not. Does it work? Yes. I pay for all our drinks ($112.02)
🙄5 PM: Dinner time. A bunch of my aunts and uncles are there, too, so we sit at the “kid’s table” with my siblings and one of my cousins. I order Jameson and ginger and a fancy cheeseburger. Maybe it’s the liquid courage, or the fact I went into this with extraordinarily low expectations, but I have a surprisingly good time…until my dad starts to fight with the waitress about separate checks for the separate tables. He didn’t mention it at the beginning of the meal, and considering we have 17 people at three different tables, the waitress understandably says no. It gets to the point where my brother just hands her his credit card to put an end to it. He doesn’t tell me how much the total bill is; P. and I venmo him $100 each ($100).
🍋7 PM: The fun isn’t over! We head back to my parents’ house for cake and presents. I eat lemon cake with ice cream and give my mom the Hokas I bought her earlier in the week. She loves the earrings from my brother, and he thanks me for helping him.
💤11 PM: We finally leave. I fall asleep on the way home. I thank P. for being such a supportive partner, take my meds, and promptly fall asleep again.
Daily total: $282.79
DAY 4: MONDAY
🤕8 AM: I make it out of bed and over to the computer. I respond to emails, update a few tickets, and purchase a knee brace from Amazon ($24.01). I LOVE going to the gym and I’m trying to lose weight for health reasons, but the past few days my left knee has been stiff and achy to the point that it hurts to go up and down the stairs. I have a doctor’s appointment this week so I can tell my primary care physician then, but I want to go for a walk to clear my head. I drink a Liquid IV.
🍜11 AM: P. picks up brunch from one of our favorite local restaurants. Their biscuits and gravy bowl is incredible. ($27.58 total, $*13.79 *for my half).
🥟4 PM: I jump in the car and run to Petsmart to pick up pill pockets and food for Trash Cat. Even though he came from a dumpster, he has decided he’ll only eat the fancy cat food. ($64.78 total, $32.39 **for my half). Then I go to Wegmans for some more groceries: tomatoes, cucumbers, frozen dumplings, lettuce, seltzer, onions, brussel sprouts, and turkey burgers. ($68.22 total, $34.11 **for my half).
🍅6 PM: P. and I eat dinner while watching the John Oliver episode on libraries (stop banning books, losers!!!!). It’s one of our other favorite lazy meals: quinoa with fancy canned beans with chopped up peppers, onions, and tomatoes. I drink a seltzer with dinner and then do some chores and take a shower.
🦷10 PM: Stayed up later than I meant to scrolling TikTok and Reddit. Whoops! I brush my teeth and turn off the lights.
Daily total: $104.30
DAY 5: TUESDAY
🧇8 AM: Roll out of bed and walk 5 steps to my computer. After checking email and signing in, I make protein waffles for breakfast and put on my new knee brace that was delivered last night.
💩10 AM: I take a quick break from writing technical documentation to fold some laundry and tidy up the kitchen. I give Trash Cat some treats and clean out the litterbox. He is a stinky boy.
👨‍💻1:30 PM: I run a meeting with my boss and grandboss about the documentation project I’m currently spearheading. We are migrating into a new (and easier) documentation system, which means I need to export, update, and organize all our current documentation. They’re both pleased with my progress and the next goals I’ve outlined. Maybe I am good at my job? Afterwards, I eat some refried beans with tortilla chips and a seltzer.
🤬4:30 PM: I get a very rude email from a faculty member saying he cannot access a file a student shared with him (and grades are due tonight). He sends me a screenshot and it turns out…he’s clicking the wrong button. I explain the correct steps and attach the student’s file, but I’m so agitated that I sign out early and go for a walk. The weather is beautiful, and I try not to think about the email, but I keep stewing over it. The worst part of working in higher ed is the entitlement - I am often treated like “the help” by the Impossibly Busy Big Brained Professors Who Don’t Have Time For Glitches (FYI, glitches do not care whether you have time for them or not).
📱6 PM: P. and I eat leftovers of our fancy canned bean bowls for dinner and feed Trash Cat. I numb out by scrolling for about 3 hours.
🙄9 PM: I go to bed, but keep thinking about that damn email and then beat myself up for being so sensitive and giving that professor so much of my mental energy off the clock.
Daily total: $0
DAY 6: WEDNESDAY
🥯7 AM: Get out of bed, throw some clothes into my gym bag, get dressed, and run out the door. I stop at Dunkin on the way to work to get an iced coffee and some stuffed bagel minis ($5.45).
🧘‍♀️10 AM: I log into my virtual therapy appointment from my office and talk for 40 minutes straight about everything I am struggling with: my routine is out of whack thanks to my mom’s dinner; I’m mad at my parents, my sister, and my job; my knee is killing me so I can’t work out; I have been a shitty partner and cat mom this week; I am scrolling to numb out instead of reading or relaxing in a meaningful way. My therapist helps me come up with an action plan. I put my phone on bedtime mode to turn it to black and white, make plans with P. for a cozy date night at home this weekend, and bookmark a few jobs to apply for. She reminds me I am a supportive sister and partner and relationships are not 50/50 every single day. We end with a meditation about releasing anger.
☁️11 AM: I meet with a staff member in admissions over Zoom to discuss file back-up in preparation for his new computer. He is actually already synced to our cloud system, meaning that all files are backed up, so the meeting is easy. He asks a few questions about the cloud system and how it works and also provides feedback on some of the tools he feels need guidelines or best practices for usage.
📽️12 PM: Lunch is the last of the fancy bean bowl leftovers and a seltzer (I am a creature of habit). While I eat, I watch budgeting videos on YouTube. I get an email that my credit card has been charged for my therapy copay ($25).
🙃3 PM: I meet virtually with a professor who is, technologically speaking, extremely high-need. I watch her rename and organize files for about an hour. Inevitably, she moves them to the wrong place, accidentally deletes the entire file name, etc. On the bright side, she is very sweet and appreciative of my guidance.
💪4:45 PM: I duck out early to drive to the gym. I let my trainer know what is going on with my knee, so we decide to hit upper today. I only started weightlifting in November and I’ve found I love it so much I am willing to shell out for personal training. After doing my best not to side-eye the men with terrible form (if you need to use your knees to complete a bicep curl, the weight is too heavy), I stretch out and grab dinner from Qdoba: a chicken bowl for me and a steak burrito for P ($24.66 total, $*12.33 *for my half).
🤙7 PM: I call my youngest brother while eating dinner. He is the only one living at home with my parents and needs to vent about what’s going on. I do my best to validate his feelings and remind him he can stop by our apartment whenever he needs to. I wish I could do more.
🚿8 PM: I pack my Qdoba leftovers for lunch, take a shower, and crawl into bed with some sleepy tea and a book.
Daily total: $42.78
DAY 7: THURSDAY
🦶5:30 AM: P. wakes me up by tickling my feet. It is not enjoyable, but it is highly effective. I grab my leftovers and head to the gym.
🚲7 AM: I finish up my cardio workout on the bike, take a quick shower, and change into my work clothes. It’s a little unfair that exercise actually does make you feel better. On the way to work, I stop at Dunkin for iced coffee again but resist getting a snack ($3.31).
🥤9 AM: My morning work consists of emails, tickets, and updating some website pages. I also find a job listing on LinkedIn at another university which is a step up from my current position. A quick look at Glassdoor shows it has a higher employee satisfaction rating than the institution where I work now, and the salary range for this position is at least $10k higher than my current salary. I spend a bit of time fine-tuning my resume and drafting a cover letter while researching the university. It has a much nicer fitness center and a smoothie bar? I know, I know, the grass is always greener…
📚10 AM: Quick walk over to the library for an appointment with the archival specialist. We discuss how to back up her files in preparation for her new computer. She gives me a tour of the rare book collection - first editions of Jane Eyre and David Copperfield, plus a copy of the Nuremberg Chronicle from the fifteenth century. Very cool. For about five minutes, I consider going back to school to get a master’s degree in library science.
🌶️11 AM: Early lunch of my Qdoba leftovers, tortilla chips, and seltzer since I didn’t have breakfast.
🖥️2 PM: I meet with my manager to discuss the documentation project and a new hire initiative in collaboration with HR. The spring semester is officially over, so we have more time on our hands to do some maintenance, clean-up, and proactive support.
🧀5 PM: Work is over! I stop at the grocery store to buy brie, crackers, oat milk, toilet paper, paper towels, and a cup of macaroni. My period is coming and I always crave cheese ($49.55 total, $*24.77 *for my half).
🍴6 PM: P. and I eat a dinner of brie, crackers, and brussel sprouts while watching a few cooking videos on YouTube. We talk about how “emotionally charged” I’ve been for the past few days (P. uses the phrase—he never, ever calls me crazy, irritable, moody, etc.). Eating cheese makes me feel better. Trash Cat and I watch a few episodes of Brooklyn 99.
💊8 PM: Quick shower, meds, and podcasts. I start to doze off.
📞9:30 PM: My brother calls me. I’m confused and groggy, so I miss the call but text him immediately asking if everything is okay. He lets me know he will be fine and I promise to call him tomorrow. It takes me a little while longer to fall asleep; P. comes to bed around 10 PM for cuddles.
Daily total: $28.08

REFLECTION
This was an above-average spending week for me with my mom’s birthday. Emotionally, it was also not a great week for me, and I often tend to spend more money when I’m upset, although I’ve apparently channeled that compulsion into grocery shopping. I am also trying to test out if smaller, more frequent grocery trips are better for us, since weekly shopping often means we throw out produce or meat.
I’m working on a) digging myself out of credit card debt and b) regulating my emotions, especially when it comes to my family. This particular stressor, and its effects on my finances, waxes and wanes throughout the year - birthdays and holidays tend to bring out the worst in both. However, even with the debt, I still feel like I am pretty financially stable (definitely more so in comparison to where I was as a kid, teen, and younger adult).
Thanks for reading 😼 Let me know if you have any questions!

2024.05.10 15:35 Glacialfury The Undying

A bonfire roared in the center of a winter-brown field encircled by dozens of canvas tents and a lone blacksmith’s forge.
Men and women and their children filtered in and out of the various shops and food tents, or huddled close to the fire, their souvenir horns of steaming mulled cider clutched close in both hands. For though spring had nearly come to Sagebrook, and despite the budding trees, the breeze held a bitter chill that threatened snow.
“Back again?”
Eldric blinked and gave a start, glancing around at the inside of the blacksmith’s tent. Hadn’t he just been…
“Best steel you’ll ever hold, lad.” The burly, coarse-bearded blacksmith handed Eldric a sheathed sword across a table display of new-forged knives. “Made that meself for just such an occasion. Here, take it. Get used to the feel of it in your hand.”
Eldric took the sword and puzzled over the man’s words as the eerie feeling he’d done this all before passed over him and settled into his gut. Get used to it? Why had the blacksmith said it like that? And what did he mean, just such an occasion? The fair? That seemed the right answer, yet he couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling in his stomach that the man meant something else. “You mean here, at Medieval Times?”
“Eh?” The smith stepped over to his portable forge and worked its bellows. A bed of red coals flared bright orange in the furnace. “What’s a medieval?” The man furrowed his brow, fumbling over the word. “City to the north? Not much for traveling these days, no. What with those Things plaguing the roads and every stick of the wilds, or so I’m told. Wicked times, these.”
Eldric started to frown, then realized the man was in character and covered it with a smile, turning away and slowly drawing the sword. The soft metallic rasp it made was a pleasure to his ears and the splendor of its mirrored shine stole his breath. A marvelous weapon, it was, master crafted, sharp on one side and delicately curved at the end. The hilt was a hand and a half of polished black bone wrapped with gold braided rope to enhance the wielder’s grip. Far finer than anything Eldric had ever held or seen. Finer even than the rare swords in Master Keple’s prized collection.
“Interesting,” he said, studying his reflection in the blade. “This is the same style I train with.”
The blacksmith grunted a response and offered a mysterious smile. The same eerie feeling from before tickled over Eldric, but he shook it off, gently tracing a fingertip down to the sword’s guard. He could never afford something so fine, but he could hold it a little longer and dream. There was nothing wrong with dreaming.
A few years ago, Eldric had taken up fencing and medieval swordsmanship to impress someone he fancied with a unique and roguish skill and quickly discovered a love for the art. Master Keple said he was a natural, a prodigy gifted for the knack of steel who was born a few centuries too late. As the years passed, Eldric’s love for swordplay grew with his mastery of the blade. Funny, he thought, watching the forge light play along the gleaming steel. Of all the bizarre talents to have, this should be his.
The blacksmith took up a heavy hammer and began to speak. “Castles and Holds in the North have been overrun, if a man can believe the tales. Queen’s sending her armies but people’s hope goes the way of the fires consuming their villages. Dark days ahead of us all, I fear.”
“Ah yes,” Eldric said, playing along with the blacksmith’s act. “Dangerous days for anyone. What are we to do?”
“Aye,” the blacksmith said, bringing the hammer down upon a piece of glowing metal fresh from the forge. Sparks leaped off the little anvil in a shower of fiery droplets and died in the dimness of the tent. “Curse on those vile creatures. Not human, I say.”
“And where are the gods, in these dark times?” Eldric asked, absently picking up an oilcloth and running it the length of the blade. “Have they abandoned us?”
The hammer stopped and the blacksmith looked Eldric straight in the eye. There it was again, that mischievous smile, as though he knew a secret Eldric did not. “Perhaps they are watching, eh traveler? Perhaps they have yet to choose a champion?”
A faint rumble issued from the west as the blacksmith smiled, out beyond the thicket of barren trees rising above the fair’s tents, but Eldric did not notice.
“Maybe so,” Eldric said. “But that’s nothing to do with the likes of us simple men, yes?” He was really getting into it now, playing his part. “A wonderful weapon,” he said, slowly sliding the sword back into its sheath and moving to return it to the smith. He wanted to stay a bit longer and play this out, but there was so much more to see and the days were still short this time of year. “Truly a work of art. But I’m afraid a simple man like me can’t afford something so fine, good blacksmith. And I must take my leave.”
“Arevan,” the blacksmith said, glancing up from his work and fixing Eldric with one striking eye. Strange that he’d not noticed the color before, bright blue to match a deep summer sky, so blue it appeared luminous with an inner light. “Names Arevan,” he said, poking a soot stained thumb into his chest. “And yer gonna need that blade for the coming trials, lad. You can be sure of that.”
Another rumble issued from the west, louder this time, enough that Eldric felt it in the ground under his boots. He heard it but was too caught up in the blacksmith’s act to wonder. “Trials? What trials?” Perhaps the man meant the mock battles to be acted out in the center of the green later that day?
Arevan straightened and lifted a thick arm to point his hammer at the tent’s opening.
“Out there, lad. It begins.”
Eldric loved live acting and, more so, an intriguing and compelling story. The fact he was playing a part made it that much better, and held him there though his feet itched to explore more of the fair. “What…” he said, turning to look over his shoulder and blinked. The crowd was gone.
The bonfire, too.
Eldric took an instinctive step forward, and a wave of vertigo swept over him.
He went to one knee.
Sudden snow covered the ground halfway up to his calves, and a fierce wind tugged at the fur-trimmed cloak he now wore over a silver embroidered black velvet vest. But these were distant concerns as he fought his stomach for possession of its contents.
Slowly, ever so slowly, the nausea receded and he wobbled to his feet. The world still swam around him and wind-driven snow whipped his hair but the spell was passing.
“Arevan, something’s wrong…” Eldric started to say and turned back to face the blacksmith.
Snow-swept trees met his gaze.
The tent was gone. Arevan was gone. Eldric felt a stab of panic kindle in the pit of his stomach. What the hell? He turned a slow circle.
It wasn’t just the blacksmith’s tent that had vanished, or the people; it was all gone. The field. The people. The children chasing and playing, the actors in their period dress, every tent and trace of civilization was gone.
He stood in a narrow clearing surrounded by a thick winter forest. Snow fell hard around him, and the only sound to disturb the hush was the low moan of the wind.
“What the hell? Hello?” Steam puffed from his mouth with each word. “What is this?” Am I hallucinating? Dreaming? I was just at the fair…
Across the snow-covered clearing, a figure emerged from the trees, obscured by the falling flakes. It seemed to lurch on unsteady legs, arms held out as if stumbling through a pitch-black maze, and even at this distance and through the storm, Eldric knew it was a man.
“Hello?” he called again, stepping toward the approaching figure. This was all wrong; he wasn’t supposed to be here. What had happened? This can’t be real!
Eldric lifted a hand to his throbbing temple and realized he was still holding the sword. It felt right, like an extension of his arm, light as a feather and strong as a steel girder. How did I get here? What is this place? Where did everyone go?
The falling snow thickened and intensified, whipping around him in dense swirls that stung his face. The wind rose from a low moan to a howl, and his toes felt frozen. The cold crept up his legs, into his limbs, clawing toward his heart. He had to start moving, or he would surely perish.
Eldric trudged through the deepening snow toward the approaching figure. Now he saw there were multiple people moving toward him. Joy blossomed in his heart. Where there were people, there was hope and salvation.
“Hey!” He shouted so his voice carried over the wind and picked up his pace, sludging through the knee-high dunes. “Over here! I’m lost and need help!”
The figures jerked to a stop and turned slightly to face the direction of his voice. There were at least half a dozen, perhaps more. Suddenly, they surged forward as they caught his scent, arms flailing wildly, and an otherworldly keening rose over the wind.
He slowed his pace. Something was wrong here. These people had something wrong with them. He stopped; he listened; he watched, straining his eyes into the storm. A sudden break in the wind as the blizzard held its breath, showed Eldric what approached and he gasped, falling back a step.
They were pale as the snow was pale, gaunt and withered, some showing hints of bone through tattered clothing. Their eyes were clouded and sightless, their jaws working in nerveless hunger.
“My god!” He heard himself say and realized he’d drawn the sword. “Stay back, god damn you!”
They boiled toward him in a rush and he circled left to keep them from surrounding him. Sensing their prey within reach, they came on with sudden fury, nearly taking him by surprise with their speed.
Eldric moved without thought. The blade and his body were one.
His sword flashed, and a headless corpse toppled at his feet. Footwork was one of the key fundamentals of any fighting art, but knee-deep in the snow, it was all he could do to keep the clawing fingers from his flesh. He whirled and ducked, bobbed and weaved a desperate dance of death and all the while his blade was a shard of silver whirring in a blur around him.
The sword flashed again, and another body fell. Again it struck, and again. The years of training were paying dividends and bodies fell around him like the snow.
He spun low under the clawing fingers of what remained of a woman, and his blade bit into her eye, drove through her brain and burst out of the back of her skull. She twitched once and fell boneless at his feet.
And just like that, it was over.
Eldric stood victorious and panting in the snow, surrounded by the storm and a ring of corpses. He was sweating, the cold from a moment ago forgotten in the heat of battle. If this was a hallucination, it was as real as it gets. But somehow Eldric knew, it wasn’t and he was far from home. How do I get back? Can I get back? Christ, I don’t even know how I got here!
A scream ripped through the shriek of the storm, jarring him from his dark thoughts. Eldric’s head jerked up from where he stood with his hands on his knees, panting. Again, the awful cry came—a blood curdling sound that echoed off the winter trees—a woman in trouble in the woods! My god!
Eldric was sprinting before he realized what he was doing, knees flashing like pistons driving him through the snow. Trees streaked past, snow-frosted and cloaked by the deepening twilight. He adjusted course several times to match the direction of the screams and the distant sound of steel on steel, crashing through the underbrush and bouncing off oaks and maples in his desperate scramble through the forest.
Finally he burst out of the wood onto a mud-churned, snowy road and what he saw froze the sweat trickling down his chest—a sight from the devil’s dreams.
The same hideous creatures who’d attacked him swarmed over a long line of wagons, some toppled on their sides and aflame. Eerie shadows danced and flickered over the scene. Men in steel armor battled the horde, but they were outnumbered a hundred to one and falling fast. Blood soaked the sparkling white mantle blanketing the area and where people had fallen, they were torn apart to the screams of the living who bore witness to the fate that awaited them.
A tall man in shining armor and a red cloak with crimson-and-gold plumes sprouting from his helmet, wheeled toward Eldric. Fear burned wild in his eyes, but he somehow held his composure as he and his men battled back the living dead. Abruptly, he screamed in a language Eldric did not understand and pointed his sword.
To late.
A clawed hand seized Eldric by the hair, violently jerking his head back and down.
Pain tore into his neck. Blood spurted crimson in the falling snow. He screamed and flailed wildly, slashing and laying about with his sword, but too many bodies and too many hands piled on top of him. Teeth and nails tore at his flesh. He felt the warmth of his blood flowing into the snow, saw ragged sinews of his flesh torn up in skeletal mouths. Black spots swirled in his vision and he heard the tortured screams of a dying animal; dimly, he realized that it was him.
He felt suddenly detached, weightless, the world falling away like he was drifting down through clouds.
Darkness took him.
“Back again?”
Eldric blinked and stumbled forward, flailing his arms.
“You alright, lad?” Arevan the blacksmith regarded him from behind the wooden table, his heavy smithing hammer paused halfway through a swing.
“I…I don’t know...” Eldric trailed off, his hands rapidly patting his body down then shooting to his neck. But there was only his clothing and healthy flesh—no gruesome wounds. “I don’t understand…”
He ducked his head outside, glancing around with the intensity of a hunted animal. The fair and all its tents and people met his gaze. The bonfire crackled and spit. Actors played at a battle. Downtown Sagebrook rose hazy in the distance.
“I don’t understand,” he said again, backing away from the tent’s flap as though it were the entrance to Hades. Relief flooded him. Had it been some wild daydream? A waking nightmare? The mutton he’d eaten earlier had tasted odd. Perhaps that was the cause? He’d heard of such things. “I'm alive,” he said and threw back his head, laughing. “I’m alive!”
“Aye,” the blacksmith said.
Metal clanged on metal. The sound drew his attention back to Arevan as the man pointed at the sword in Eldric’s hand. He hadn’t realized he was holding it.
“Yer gonna need that blade for the coming trials, lad. You can be sure of that.”
Eldric’s blood ran cold.
“W-What did you say?”
Arevan pointed outside.
“Out there lad. It begins.”

2024.05.10 09:45 Edwardthecrazyman Hiraeth or Where the Children Play: Hell is Waiting and It's an Abyss[11]

First/Previous
The figures began to wave, indicating that they’d seen us just as well as we’d seen them, and I lowered the binoculars to catch the faces of the children. “They know we’re here.”
“They might be able to help us,” said Andrew.
“Doubtful,” said Gemma.
“Doesn’t matter,” I interjected, “We ain’t got the weaponry to fight from a distance anyhow. We could run. We could parlay.”
“Parlay?” asked the boy.
“Like a gamble,” said the girl—she shook her head then spoke to me, “My vote’s no.”
A voice through a bullhorn met us and when we turned to look back up the road to the gathered people there, one of them called more greatly so the words were clear, “We see you. We won’t hurt you.” The strangers, probably wasters, stood between squat buildings on either side of the road.
“See?” said Andrew. The young man rose and took Trouble with him.
Gemma shook her head and me and her both followed the boy and the dog. “Bad idea,” said the girl, “Very bad idea.”
The voice through the bullhorn sounded again, “If you’ve any weapons, tell us now. We won’t hurt you, but we don’t want any misunderstandings either.”
I froze for a moment, called back, “I have a gun!” They didn’t need to know about my knife.
“We have guns too,” called the voice, “Do not be alarmed.”
With tepid steps, nearing Farmersburg’s epicenter, the group there came into greater focus, and I saw three men and a woman. They’d arranged cement blocks alongside the brick buildings on either flank leading into town. One man—the speaker with the bullhorn—stood directly in the center of the street, a man to the right hunkered behind their blockade and the woman and spare man stood to the left, their legs hidden behind the makeshift low wall.
The speaker, once we’d come within comfortable range, chucked the bullhorn to the man on the right and then swiped his fingers through his crew cut. “What’s brought the three of you this way?” Trouble clung to the boy and kept her head low, offering confused eyes whenever she dared look up.
“We’re only passing through,” said Gemma.
“Passing through?” asked the speaker, “There’s not much to pass through. We spent the last week or more picking over this place. If you’re scavving, this place is nothing but bones.”
“Scavvers?” I asked.
The speaker nodded. “This is our boon.” He examined the sky. “Getting dark in a couple hours and you might want the rest. As long as we understand that the bounty we’ve taken is ours, you’re more than welcome to bed down somewhere on the west end.”
The boy tugged on the leash faintly, perhaps from anxiety. “Find anything interesting?”
The scav leader chuckled. “Yeah. Not much in a dump like this, but there were a few overlooked tablets—books and diaries. Stuff those pointy hats might like back in Alexandria.” The man waved his hand, “Besides that? Nothing. Had a few muties that needed clearing out. Previous residents.” His hand came to rest on his holster; the gun there was unmistakably a .44. He noticed me noticing and withdrew his hand from his hip then laughed. “Habit,” said the scavver. He pivoted so that I could look at the gun there. “Pretty thing though, isn’t it?” He narrowed his eyes to my strap. “What’s that old barrel you got there?”
“Shotgun,” I said.
“Sure—what kind?” asked the scavver, gray eyes alight with curiosity.
“B-P-S. That’s Browning.” I adjusted the strap on my shoulder. “What’s that?” I pointed to the gun on his hip.
“Pfft. Some hunk of metal I picked up outside of Golgotha. But those tall buildings? They give me the creeps. Good place for ammo though. What direction are you headed anyway?”
“West,” I said.
“Anywhere in particular?”
“Just west.”
The leader’s eyes traced from me to the children then to the dog then back to me and he smirked. “Fair. Like I said.” He hooked a thumb over his shoulder, “West end and we won’t bother you.”
“Fair,” I said.
The look of the other scavvers was lethargy, an easing as they realized there would be no fight and the man that was ducked below the low wall rose to expose that he’d been perched there with a pistol drawn in his right hand, ready to use it if things became unfortunate.
The leader stepped from the center of the street, to meet his comrades to the left, and motioned us on, and we began to move, but Andrew spoke, “There’s something following us.” The scavvers tensed and even though the poorly hidden gunman had put away his weapon, his shoulders squared, and he spat.
“Following you?” asked the leader.
The boy nodded. “It’s an Alukah.”
I shot a look at the boy.
Andrew shrugged, “I thought they should know. In case it comes knocking for them.”
“A vamp?” asked the scav leader, “Never seen one.” He turned his attention to me, “Alukah though. That’s a strange name you’ve given it. Like those religious fanatics out in Golgotha. That where you come from?”
I nodded. “It’s safe in the daylight.” A sigh escaped me, and I continued, “If it knocks on your door, ignore it.”
The scav leader waved his hand at the notion. “I know about vamps—never seen one, but I know the stories. Besides, if it’s after you, I don’t need to worry so much. You didn’t mention it though.” He rolled his tongue around in his closed mouth, protruding a cheek, then continued, “You weren’t hoping it’d get me and mine and forget about you, were you? Setting us up for it?” The man and woman to the left side of the road reached for their hips, but the leader put out a hand to quell their fighting spirit.
I shook my head, “No. I just didn’t think it was pertinent.”
Gemma stepped in, “Yeah. There’s no reason to start a fight over something so trivial.”
“Little girl,” said the leader, “You planned on feeding us to a monster, I think. Nothing trivial about that.” His gaze went from the girl to me. “That is right though. You were going to let it get us unaware, isn’t that right? Weren’t even going to let us know about it?”
“No,” I said, “We’re just passing through. Don’t let a snap judgement turn this into something it ain’t.”
It seemed an eternity while that man watched us through his slitted, suspicious eyes. Then he shook his head. “I’m not in the business of killing old men and his kids. Dogs neither. Go on.” He once more hooked his thumb west. “Don’t bother us. We won’t bother you.”
We took through Farmersburg at a quickened pace and far spaced houses with low peaks passed us by on either side; the occasional vacant house or brick sundry shop was there too. Downtown was a descriptor that wasn’t befitting of a place so desolate and small. Looking upon the half-destroyed homes, I imagined the excess in space that ancient man had at their leisure, and I was all at once envious and quietly angry.
The roads were worn from rain and age and dipped in places and although we moved on without much issue, I continuously shot glances back the way we’d come till we met a broken rail line; the old tracks stretched northbound and southbound and though the wood had long rotted away to brittle streaks, the metal lines remained. With the scavvers well out of eyesight, I eased, but not much. The potential for them to have someone perched high was a lingering thought and as we passed a half-ruined church on our left, my eyes strayed to its intact tower—there’d possibly been a bell there once (or speaker boxes)—and I could imagine the sight a sniper might have. We’d be easy. Open.
Only once we’d passed the patches of land where vehicles lay strewn about, where houses were closer, where sideline walkways remained, did I let go of the tightness in my stomach. It seemed a curse was lifted from the group as Gemma began to scold the boy loudly.
“You are an idiot,” she said, “How could you? You could have gotten us killed!”
“I didn’t mean nothing by it,” said Andrew, holding onto Trouble’s leash with his only hand; the dog darted in front of our path as much as the line would allow her—it seemed she too had relaxed. “I just thought that I’d want to know if there was something like that out at night. I thought I’d want to know it. Seemed right.”
“I don’t care what seems right,” said Gemma, “It doesn’t matter what seems right to you. You could have gotten us killed! Does that not register to you?”
Briefly, I questioned myself silently how either of them had ever been in love with the other. Then I recalled what the scavver had called us; it was such a moment that I hadn’t even allowed it to sink in. He’d called me an old man. Fair enough. He’d called them my kids.
I shook my head. “Save the arguing for when we’ve found a place to bunk down. Should be listening. Should be watching.”
We walked and shadows grew long with evening, beyond where structures became even further spaced and the scavver’s area was well and from us. Upon coming to a two-lane highway, which stretched from left to right, we pushed to a station; its pumps were dry, and the overhang was dilapidated, fallen away to the concrete square where the station sat, and the glass was gone from the windows entirely so that the thing looked like a creature itself, poised for some unsuspecting travelers to rest there. Night coming, as it was, we went to the building, stepped through the doorless threshold, and took note of its layout. Dusty corroded shelves stood empty save rotted boxes where inventory once sat, and a skylight over the counter exposed an open window to the sky; Gemma braved the recesses further, finding an office and though the door was hollow and thin, we took account of the small windowless room, and the children began unpacking camp while I went to the shelving units in the main chamber with my prybar. After dismantling a few of the rusted shelves, I took two elongated rectangular pieces to the office and boarded us in, hammering salvaged nails through the metal; it wouldn’t stop anything, not really, but seeing the makeshift slats there, across the doorway felt safer.
“You could’ve killed us,” repeated Gemma.
“I didn’t know that’s how they’d react,” said Andrew.
There was a bitterness in the girl’s voice like poison and the boy’s responses came weaker with each thing she said.
“I wanted to see the world,” said the girl, “I wanted to find a place that’s good.” She scoffed. “Ridiculous.” Gemma turned on me. “You were right, Harlan. There’s nothing in this world. Nothing worth saving. A piece of me wishes I’d stayed home, but it’s no good there anyway. My father—” she froze mid speech for a moment then continued, “He wasn’t a good man. Tell me, is there any good in this world? Or is it just travelers on roads, vaguely threatening each other? Is it all vile places? Can’t there be a place? A good one? Or is all this travelling only hiding? Is travelling looking at the dirty walls of the next place we take refuge? Home—I could look on starry skies there. The best thing you could do is use that gun. Shoot me. Shoot him. Shoot the dog. Shoot yourself.” Her voice was like stone; she moved through the small dark room, fell into an old plastic office chair. The object creaked as she rocked on it. She seemed to be thinking aloud, “Maybe Andrew’s right. Maybe he’s good.” She stopped in her rocking, swiveled around so the chair offered a low howl. Gemma looked at Andrew; her brow was angled, and she frowned. “Maybe you’re good. Maybe that’s why you warned them like that. Because you’re good. I’m sorry.”
Andrew took to the arduous task of removing Trouble’s leash with his singular hand and he shook his head in doing it, frustrated. “Since when did you get so hard?” he asked her, “When did you get so—”
“So what?” snapped Gemma, “Evil? You think evil matters here? You think evil matters at home? You’ve seen evil just as well as I have, Andrew, and you know it’s a load. I know what you think. You think I’m some tainted thing—maybe no better than a mutant. You think I’m some heartless monster. What sort of person could kill their own dad?” She cried; tears came abruptly down her cheeks, and she attempted to dry them with the back of her sleeve, leaning forward in her chair. “You knew the man in passing. I lived with him.” She shot a glance at me. “Harlan knew him too. Knew him well enough. He was a bastard.” She choked on her words, catching the sobs.
I pulled my mouth tight and nodded.
She continued on Andrew: “You said you didn’t love me anymore! Okay. Fine.” Gemma dabbed her eyes then pushed her sleeves up to reveal the scars left there by Baphomet and yanked them down again to cover the twisted skin. “Fine,” she pointed at Andew; he’d stood from the dog and Trouble looked on, just as skittish as him, “But I saw it in your eyes when you were sick and hurt. I saw that you couldn’t mean it. I saw those eyes and knew you still cared for me. There was hope maybe.” She sniffed, “Now though I see the way you look at me with those eyes. Since you’ve seen that awful blood on my hands. I know you mean it now. I know you’re good and I’m not and you couldn’t love me because now we can all be certain of how terrible I am.”
“No,” said Andrew, taking the small room in a single stride to hunker beside her, “No, you’re not evil, Gem. You couldn’t be evil. Is that what you think?”
Initially she jerked from the hand he placed on her shoulder then stopped and let him massage the spot.
“She’s not evil, is she, Harlan?” He cocked his head to ask me.
I shook my head. “You’re not a bad person, Gemma.” Suddenly I felt silly trying my hand at wisdom like I was an authority on anything. Then I thought to add something that could be wise—maybe, “Whoever fights monsters should be sure not to become a monster.” It was tough remembering the rest, but it came—the kids looked on quizzically, Gemma with tears frozen in her eyes, Andrew with a look of desperation, “It’s a quote and the rest of it’s the part you should know, ‘If you gaze long enough into the abyss, it’ll stare back.’. Something like that.”
“What’s that mean?” asked Gemma.
“I think, in this instance, I want it to mean that you should remember that if you linger on the bad in the world, it’ll consume you. You’ll make something be that ain’t and it’ll come for you.”
The girl pushed the last cries away, swept a hand through her thinned hair. “Since when are you such an optimist?”
“Optometrist.” I said, removing my pack—my hands shook as I rolled a cigarette and after a spell of silence and smoke, I rubbed the tobacco dead and prepared us some dinner.
Andrew consoled the girl and Trouble sat alongside me, watching the pan as I warmed pickled sausages—I put the last bit of our hardtack to soak; a meal, a sad meal, should sit heavy at least.
The haggard expressions of the children mirrored my feelings, and I could not remember a time I had not felt an ache in my bones—the falter of spirit was greater still. A road, no matter the direction, had not so long ago filled me with curiosity or with the promise of thoughtlessness. All I’d been doing in recent memory was thinking, perhaps staring into that abyss too much.
I watched them while they slept on their bedrolls, keeping the lantern low; Trouble joined me, resting across my lap where I sat on the floor, and I whispered to the dog sweet forgetful things and for a moment I thought of Dave, and I was glad he was kind enough to take in the mutt. Trouble watched through slitted quivering eyes, yawning, stretching, jerking in her slumber. Sleep evaded me and I waited for the knocking.
Surely, it came gently, the great beast, the Alukah (vamp is what the scavver called it) exhausted audible breath from the other side of the door and I scooted nearer it and listened to its pained animal-like protests from the other side the thin barrier.
I need help. Let me in. There’s something after me.
The voice, for all its muffled snarls, retained a surreal quality and I spoke back to the thing, first glancing at the children on their bedding where they remained sleeping. “Leave,” I muttered lowly, nearly kissing the door as the words left my mouth.
Ah, so you speak. A pause followed and a slow scratch, like the creature traced a great clawed hand across the surface on the other side. I’m scared.
“I know what you are.”
Do you?
“I do. I won’t let you in. You can leave.”
But I’m scared.
“I’ve told you already I know what you are. Leave us be.”
I smell you. An inhalation of breath came. Give me that treat of a boy. Give him and I’ll let you go. The voice became like a low growl.
“I don’t make deals with your kind anymore.”
Who says? That intake of breath followed once more—a long sniff. You’ve the stink of Mephisto on you. You say you make no deals, but I smell it. I think you’d deal.
“No more.” Trouble arrived by the door and gave me a curious look then fell onto my shoulder where I sat, putting her head there and licked my cheek and lowly groaned; I petted the dog and she fell onto my lap; it made me feel secure, if only a bit. “You should go on.”
You burned me. I can’t let that go, but I could. The boy was mine rightly. Your interference—that other human man too—you stole him. I remember you. He’s mine; he’s owed to me. You’re lucky I come offering deals.
A shiver touched the base of my spine and went to crawling and even with Trouble there I felt chilled and sweaty, and the sense grew that I could give up Andrew and go on my way.
“Fuck off,” I whispered.
Harlan?
I bit my tongue. Hard.
Harlan, we know you. We’ve friends waiting for you.
With that, the creature left us for the night, but sleep was a near impossibility and even when I curled small and held the dog in my arms and buried my face in the neck of the animal, I could not rid myself of the coolness that’d passed to me.
“Maybe we lost it,” said Andrew, as we packed our things the following morning.
“No,” I said, then followed with, “We should cut hard and straight to Babylon.”
Gemma remained dejected that day, holding her eyes to the ground or the sky and muttered responses to whatever was spoken to her.

2024.05.10 01:26 dj_spanmaster Gifted "some" eggs, and looking for ideas

By "some" I mean four dozen chicken eggs and a dozen duck eggs. (Yes, smartphone, I actually meant to write "duck" this time.) And this was just the first gift of the season, I expect more every other month!
I have some ideas, with blind spots. Definitely on the slate are custards, frozen custards, meringues, pavlovas, quiches, and sponge cakes. As you can tell I lean to the sweet. But I've never used duck eggs, and I could also use some more savory applications.
And if you don't help ... Well maybe I'll just make miso eggs every other day for a few weeks.

2024.05.09 22:01 blingandbling "Love" by Guy de Maupassant

I have just been reading in the paper the account of a crime passionel involving a man who killed the woman he loved and then turned the gun on himself. The personalities do not matter; what counts is the passion. I was interested in the story not because it touched me or because it gave me pause for thought but because it reminded me of something that happened to me once on a hunting trip during my youth. Just as the cross allegedly appeared in the sky to some of the early Christians, so love sailed into my own view out of the blue on this particular occasion.
I was born with all the instincts and sense of primitive man but these have been tempered with time by both the reasoning and the sensibilities of his civilized successor. I am passionately fond of hunting yet a bleeding animal, a bird with blood on its feathers, or even the sight of blood on my own hands often makes me feel faint.
One particular year towards the end of autumn, when the cold had set in really early, I got an invitation from one of my cousins, Karl de Rauville, to go duck-shooting with him down on the marshes by dawn. My cousin was a strapping great fellow with red hair and a huge beard, a very hale and hearty outdoor type, a bit of a rough diamond really, but for all his faults extremely good company. He lived in a kind of country-house-cum-farm in a wide river valley. On the slopes to the right and left of it was ancient woodland with magnificent trees where some of the rarest game-birds in that part of France were often to be found. Sometimes eagles had been shot there, and certain birds of passage which almost never visited our overpopulated regions invariably stopped over among its age-old boughs as if they knew or somehow recognized in it a little vestige of primeval forest remaining there to shelter them on their brief, nocturnal landfall.
The valley was made up of wide pastures irrigated by channels and separated by hedges. The river, itself a channel up to this point, spread out here into a vast area of marshland. This marsh, the best hunting-ground in which I have ever shot, was the pride and joy of my cousin who maintained it with as much care as if it were parkland. Through the great masses of rushes with which it was covered and which endowed it with a rustling, turbulent life of its own, narrow passages had been formed were flat-bottomed boats propelled by poles slid silently on the dead water, brushing against bullrushes, causing fish to dart quickly under the tall grass and moorhens, with their pointed black heads, to dive quickly out of sight.
I am wildly and passionately fond of the water. I love the sea despite its being too vast and uncontrollable ever to be really mastered; I love rivers and their evanescent beauty as they flow out of sight; in particular I love the marsh, where a whole world of invisible aquatic life seethes. The marsh is, as I say, a universe apart, with its own inhabitants, its own migratory creatures, its own voice, its own sounds and above all its own sense of mystery. There is nothing that makes one more wary, more uneasy, nothing more frightening sometimes, than a swamp. What is the fear that hovers over these low, watery plains? Is it the vague murmur of the reeds, the strange fireflies, the deep silence enveloping all on calm nights, the weird mists shrouding the rushes, or is it perhaps the barely audible lapping of the water, so soft, so gentle and yet sometimes more terrifying than human gunfire or thunder from above. Is it all this which makes the marsh a nightmarish spot, a place of fear, concealing perhaps a dangerous and unfathomable secret?
No, there's something else to it. A different secret, even deeper and older, still floats on the dense fogs. Perhaps it contains the secret of creation itself! For was it not in stagnant, muddy water and the heavy humidity of wet land warming in the heat of the sun that the first stirrings, the first movements and the beginnings of life itself were felt?
It was evening when I reached my cousin's house and cold enough to split stone. During dinner, my cousin, wearing a sealskin jacket and looking like some exotic Siberian animal, told me about the arrangements he had made for stating out that very night. We ate in the great hall where every sideboard, every wall and even the ceiling were festooned with stuffed birds - sparrow-hawks, herons, owls, nightjars, buzzards, harriers, vultures and falcons, some with wings outstretched, some perched on branches which were themselves hooked on to nails.
In order to reach the place chosen for our shoot by half past four we were to leave at about three-thirty in the morning. A shelter made of blocks of ice had been built there to keep out the terrible wind of the hours before daylight. It is the sort of wind which is so cold that it cuts into your flesh like a saw, pinches like a pair of pliers, stings like a poisoned dart and burns like fire.
My cousin was rubbing his hands. "I've never known such a frost," he said, "we were down to twelve below zero at six this evening."
Directly after supper I plunged straight into bed and went to sleep by the light of an enormous fire blazing in my hearth. As three struck, I was awoken. I put on a sheepskin and Karl when I met him was wrapped in a bearskin. After we had each drunk two cups of boiling hot coffee followed by two glasses of liqueur brandy we set off, accompanied by a keeper and by out two dogs, Plongeon and Pierrot.
As soon as I stepped outside I was frozen to the marrow. It was one of those nights when the world seems dead with cold. The frozen air becomes an almost tangible presence so badly does it hurt. Not a breath of wind stirs; all is rigid, motionless. The atmosphere bites, cuts, dries up and kills all trees, plants and insects; sometimes small birds fall dead to the frozen ground where they too stiffen at once in its icy embrace.
The pale moon in its last quarter and titled to one side seemed to hang half-dead in space, too weak to go on and itself paralysed by the severity of the weather in the heavens. Casting a weak, mournful light on the world it shed the usual pale glimmer it gives each month at the end of its resurrection.
Karl and I walked side by side, backs hunched against the cold, our hands in our pockets and guns under the arm. Our shoes had been wrapped in wool so that we could walk without slipping on the frozen river. Now they made no sound and as we walked on I watched the breath of our dogs rise as white steam beneath us.
We were soon at the edge of the marsh and turned into one of the pathways of dry rushes leading through this miniature forest. Our elbows brushing against the long, ribbonlike leaves made a soft sound. I was gripped as never before by the very powerful and particular emotion which the marsh produces within me. This one felt stone dead of cold as we trod on its surface through the dried-up reeds.
Suddenly, as we came round a bend in one of the pathways, I saw the ice hut constructed to shelter us. I went in, and since we had an hour to wait before any stray bird might awaken I rolled myself up in my wrap and tried to get warm. Lying on my back I began to look at the crooked moon which, distorted through the semi-transparent walls of this igloo, looked like four horns in the sky. Soon the cold from the frozen marsh together with the condensation coming off the walls and dropping on us from above had got so deep into me that I began to cough. My cousin Karl became suddenly worried.
"Never mind if we don't have much of a bag today," he said. "I certainly don't want you to catch cold. Come on let's build a fire."
He ordered the keeper to cut us some rushes. We piled them up in the middle of the shelter in whose roof a gap was left to let out smoke. When the red flames licked the clear crystal walls within, they began to melt little by little as if in a gentle sweat. Karl, who had remained outside, cried out, "Come and see!"
I came out and was lost in wonder. Our cone-shaped cabin looked now like a diamond with a fire at its heart crystallizing suddenly out of the frozen water of the marsh. Inside could be seen the fantastical shapes of our two dogs as they too tried desperately to get warm.
A strange cry, the cry of a lost wanderer, passed over our heads. The glow from our hearth was beginning to wake the birds of the wild. Nothing stirs me more than that first anonymous clamour of life carrying so fast and so far before the first light appears on the winter horizon. In the icy dawn, to me that fleeting cry borne on the wings of a bird becomes the sigh of the soul of the world.
"Put out the fire," Karl was saying, "here comes the dawn."
The sky was indeed beginning to grow pale, and across it skeins of ducks sketched long, sudden lines, which in an instant disappeared. A flash burst out in the darkness. Karl had just fired a shot and two dogs were off. From then on, every minute or so changing position, one or other of us would aim as soon as the shadow of a flying formation appeared above the rushes. Pierrot and Plongeon, breathless and ecstatic, retrieved for us the bleeding creatures whose eye sometimes looked at us still.
Dawn had broken on a clear and cloudless day. The sun was appearing at the bottom of the valley and we were thinking of leaving when two birds with necks and wings outstretched passed suddenly over our heads. I fired a shot. One, a teal with a silvery breast, fell practically at my feet. Then from the space above my head came the terrible cry of a bird. It was a heart-breaking lament, repeated over and over. The little creature which had been spared began to wheel and circle against the blue of the sky above us looking down at his dead mate which I held in my hands.
Karl, on his knees, the gun at his shoulder and a glint in his eye, was watching, waiting for it to come close enough.
"You shot the female," he said, "the male will never leave now."
Nor did he. He circled and cried around us and never did a cry of pain pierce my heart like that grief-stricken sound, the sorrowful reproach of a poor creature lost now in the heavens above. At times he would flee under threat from the gun trained upon him. Sometimes he looked as though he were about to go on alone. But never could he bring himself to leave. Always he came back for the female.
"Put her out on the ground," Karl instructed. "He'll come back in a while."
Heedless of danger and distraught with love for the mate I had killed, the bird approached again. Karl fired. It was as though a cord holding the bird aloft had been cut. I saw a black object fall and heard it land in the rushes. Pierrot brought it back to me.
I put them both, cold already, in the same gamebag. And that same day I left for Paris.
