spiral alice is my Roman Empire: the story of a very weird little playlist we may have forgotten about too soon.

On December 1, 2023, a very weird little playlist came into existence and I don't think it was talked about enough. It has become my Roman Empire.

At first, I thought I'd shake it off a la niceboy ed, but I have many, many questions about spiral alice, some of which I've included at the end of this post. Please also note the multiple connections to conversations we've had in Gaylor spaces recently, especially when it comes to overarching themes and symbolism.
So please, come down the rabbit hole and spiral with me because I would love to discuss!

Who or what is spiral alice?

This is the rundown on how spiral alice came to be a topic of conversation, so start here if this is new to you or you need a refresher.
November 29, 2023
  • “You’re Losing Me” (YLM) is released on all streaming services to celebrate Taylor Swift being named Spotify’s Global Top Artist of 2023.
December 1, 2023
  • Fans notice that YLM lists a third person in the songwriter credits, “spiral alice,” on Apple Music.
  • Spotify credits for YLM only list Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff.
  • Searching for “spiral alice” on Spotify returns no artist by that name.
  • However, there is a Spotify radio playlist titled “spiral alice Radio.”
What is a Radio playlist? According to the Spotify Community page, “Spotify Radio is a feature that creates a playlist based on any Song, Album, Playlist or Artist you select. The playlist also updates over time to keep fresh.”
  • On both Apple Music and the Spotify radio playlist, “spiral alice” is stylized in all lowercase.

Not Logged In vs. Logged In

Users not logged in to Spotify see there are two songs listed by artist spiral alice: “Error Track” (4:38) and “The Binding of the Pearl Girl” (2:21), from the album “The Binding of the Pearl Girl.” “Error Track” is one second longer than YLM. Both are greyed out on the playlist preview and appear as either track 1 or track 7.
From the Spotify spiral alice Radio page, as long as the users aren’t logged in to Spotify, it is possible to select the songs from spiral alice but they can't be played. The release date for both tracks is listed as June 7, 2023, and the copyright is listed under the name “Alice terreal” (last name not capitalized).

https://preview.redd.it/x1ytvbjudl5d1.png?width=6000&format=png&auto=webp&s=362da6291c57f355b7e3b86dc613eb1166cbf05b

What's on the playlist?

Users reported the following about their individual spiral alice Radio playlists:
  • Users didn’t have all the same songs, but there was significant overlap.
  • Users asked friends who do not listen to Taylor Swift to see what kinds of songs were included for them; there was also significant overlap between those playlists and the playlists of frequent listeners of Taylor Swift.
  • When logged in to Spotify, there are no songs by a “spiral alice,” or an artist page for that name.
  • The playlist featured a very small preview image at the top of the playlist that showed the Taylor Swift video “canvas” for the song Mastermind.
Normally a Spotify Radio station starts with the artist whose song, profile, or album the station is based off of. This playlist started with a Taylor Swift song for all users (although the song itself varied).
  • All users reported that the playlist followed the pattern of the first song being a Taylor Swift song, as well as every 6th song after that. This pattern has since changed.

The Themes are Theme-ing

Throughout the playlist, several striking recurring themes and potential Swift references stand out.
Some recurring themes include:
  • Ashes
  • Battle / War / Fighting
  • Broken / Damaged / Blinded / Hurt / Healing
  • "Daylight"
  • Doors
  • Fire / Smoke
  • Flying / Falling
  • Growing Up / High School
  • Home / Going Home / Hometown
  • Hypnotized / Mesmerized / Spellbound
  • Light / Dark
  • Memory / Nostalgia
  • Ocean
  • Past Love / Passage of Time
  • Poets / Poetry
  • Prison
  • Roads
  • Stars / Moon
  • Storms
  • Yellow / Blue / Gold
Some striking coincidences/themes in the spiral alice Radio playlist:
  • A song called "florida" by mxmtoon was featured on the playlist when it was first released. This was months before the TTPD announcement.
  • Songs called "Labour," "Ceilings," and "Tunnels" were included prior to the TTPD release ("Years of ~labor~, locks and ceilings," "Gray and blue and fights and ~tunnel~s" are lyrics from "Fresh Out the Slammer").
  • A song called "Wild Winds" was included prior to the TTPD release ("Wise men once said 'Wild winds are death to the candle'" are lyrics from "The Albatross."
  • Several songs from The Greatest Showman were featured, again prior to TTPD which features a lot of circus references.

The Lyrics are Lyric-ing

More Lore

Shazam YLM, Get “Error Track” - A TikTok user made a video (reportedly in June 2023, but it gained traction in December) to say that she heard You’re Losing Me on the radio and wanted to know what it was called so she could buy it. She used Shazam to identify the song and was taken to “Error Track” by spiral alice, with the same black and white profile image as appears on Spotify. She tried three times to Shazam YLM and was brought to Error Track all three times. The screenshot in the user’s video showed that “Error Track” had been Shazamed 18,872 times by the time the screenshot was taken.
Google spiral alice, Get YLM - In December, when users searched “spiral alice,” several reported that they got hits related to YLM.
“Capillaries” Anagram Fan Theory - An article published by Just Jared on the evening of December 1, 2023 titled, “Who Is Spiral Alice? Taylor Swift Fans Think They've Decoded Mystery Songwriter on 'You're Losing Me'” explains that the fan theory behind spiral alice is that it is an anagram for capillaries, since Swift used her heartbeat in the background of YLM. The only other song in Swift’s catalog to use a recording of her heartbeat is “Wildest Dreams” from the album 1989, where she credits the recording as “Heartbeat - Taylor Swift.” Some fans criticized the interpretation of “spiral alice” as capillaries, saying that despite being part of the vascular system and connecting arteries to veins, “capillaries” isn’t synonymous to a heartbeat.
Is It an Alice in Wonderland Reference? - A lot of people noted that “spiral alice” could be a reference to Alice in Wonderland. Imagery surrounding the Alice stories, from original book illustrations to the Disney film retellings, classically include spirals to symbolize disorientation and whimsy.
spiral alice Album Art - The album art image for spiral alice is a black and white illustrated silhouette of a person with both hands on their head and one large eye for a face. They appear to be looking up at or being looked down upon by an evil eye symbol, surrounded by seven smaller evil eye symbols. A reverse image search suggests the image may be related to various holy symbols. As of June 2024, there are several uses of this image as a profile picture, but no notable use that credits the original artist.
Background Color Changing - In late May 2024, the background color of the spiral alice Radio playlist changed color from a coral pink to a periwinkle blue. For a short period of time, the cover of the playlist mentioned Taylor Swift as a featured artist on the playlist.

Swiftian Spirals

The spiral alice of it all made me wonder where else spirals may have been referenced in Taylor's work and I found the below. Although a clear throughline is a little hard to see, I think it's still interesting.
  • 2014 (?) - The Manhattan apartment where many of the 1989 Polaroids were taken featured a spiral staircase.
  • August 24, 2017 - The Look What You Made Me Do lyric video is released. Created by the design firm ODD, the video’s look is inspired by the unique style of designer Saul Bass, who designed the iconic movie poster for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 thriller Vertigo.
  • According to the Academy Museum Store, “In 1989, Vertigo was one of the first 25 films selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” We do know she loves a callback to 1989 pop culture events.
  • February 24, 2019 - Taylor posts a pink-filtered photo of her on a spiral staircase as promo for Lover.
  • August 22, 2019 - The Lover music video is released. In the center of the Lover house is a spiral staircase.
  • November 23, 2021 - Swift posted a video of her singing Champagne Problems from the base of a spiral staircase, wearing the wedding gown from the “I Bet You Think About Me” music video.
  • November 11, 2021 - “If you want to go down a rabbit hole, jump in, the water’s great. We’re all mad here.” - Taylor Swift on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Adding this here because spirals are a visual motif in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo and the Disney animated Alice in Wonderland. In both films, spirals are a sign of falling, disorientation, and dreaming.
  • October 21, 2022 - Talk your talk and go viral / I just need this love spiral. - Lavender Haze
  • August 4, 2023 - Taylor promoted a single by an artist called griff titled “Vertigo,” with the caption “damn griff I love this one” and an image of griff, pictured with her hair styled into braids and a single spiral curl in the middle of her forehead, as well as a small spiral under the track name. I do believe this imagery is a reference to the Hitchcock film.
  • December 2, 2023 - There is a tie-dye shirt in the TS merch store called “Taylor Swift Midnights Spiral Tie Dye T-Shirt.”
  • February 5, 2024 - Taylor Nation posted a story to Instagram with a red carpet photo of Taylor at the Grammys, captioned: "Pictured: The Chairman of the Tortured Poets Department making Swifties spiral."

Lyrical Swiftian Spirals

  • You lift my feet off the ground / You spin me around /You make me crazier, crazier - Crazier
  • Spinning like a girl in a brand new dress / We had this big wide city all to ourselves - Holy Ground, Red
  • We're a crooked love / in a straight line down. - I Wish You Would, 1989
  • Spinning out of control / Didn't they tell us don't rush into things? - Wonderland, 1989
  • Talk your talk and go viral / I just need this love spiral. - Lavender Haze, Midnights
  • All those nights you kept me goin' / Swirled you into all of my poems. - Fresh Out the Slammer, TTPD
https://preview.redd.it/w9ns7q35fl5d1.png?width=6000&format=png&auto=webp&s=7561081be308977598baaac8ded5f197d4a4f6df

Can I ask you a question (okay, more than one)?

  1. How is it possible to have a Spotify Radio playlist for an artist that doesn't exist?
  2. Why did the playlist start with Taylor Swift for everyone who originally looked at it, when the first artist of a Spotify radio playlist should be the artist the playlist is based on?
  3. Why/how was the Mastermind canvas featured on the spiral alice playlist?
  4. Are there technical explanations that would explain all the coincidences surrounding this playlist, and what are they? For example, how are the themes of the songs so consistent/consistent with Taylor's (especially recent) work? How did the playlist's creation coincide so well with the release of YLM?

2024.06.09 20:09 Kalinbro There should be a better standard for "indie" app executables

There should be a better standard for
I'm a Vtuber making the jump from Windows to Linux, been around here for a bit testing games and hanging out discussing stuff.
I hit a major road block yesterday and today when I wanted to stream, first my microphone was a headache to install, it's the ElGato Wave:1 by USB and for some reason it didn't work OOTB, I had to fiddle with the settings in Linux Mint Pavucontrol.
After 30 minutes I got it working and everything looked okay.
Then OBS didn't had the option for Game Capture so I had to resort to just window capture for now, I guess it's just the standard for now for streaming/record on Linux.
Okay, so far so okay... now the Vtubing programs. I hit the road block here, most if not all apps have a Linux counterpart but were hard to install or just run OOTB, your average Joe doesn't know how to make a file an "executable" on Linux and you have to go to the terminal and hope you are inputting the correct command.
Shouldn't there be a better standard for executables? something like an .exe or maybe even an .elf for applications downloaded from indie devs like from Itch.io or other places. Maybe we can come up with something universal for being able to execute programs without having to go through multiple hoops? Or is it not possible due to how Linux (or Unix) essentially works?
Making the emphasis here because if "we" ever want to be the "desktop OS" for "everyone" we need to make life easier for average Joes or just your non techy person that would instantly fear the terminal.
Or "we" could come up with a graphical tool to just... click the file and make it executable or simplify the process of chmod +x blahblahblah so people don't get instantly discouraged.
This is the only file you get sometimes when downloading stuff from Itch.io and you cannot just double click and run it
Not only for tools but for games even, what if there's a tiny dev selling their games on Itch.io and they offer a Linux version but that version can only be downloaded there and needs those steps to be set up as executable AND you also need to install other dependencies.
Just a tiny rant and my grain of salt, now that Windows 11 is paving the way for people to join the Tux Side we should receive them with open arms and embrace the idea that Linux could be mainstream and not just the "Server OS"
Side note: I eventually got it working, had to use an alternative like Gazo Vtuber since VeadoTube didn't work OOTB and I couldn't get the Windows version to work correctly with OBS. Since there is no game capture option. PNGTuber Plus works too and you can also do the Discord Reactive way.
Finally working with Gazo Vtuber but missing VeadoTube features.
Thank you for reading! Looking forward to your thoughts!
Cheers!

2024.06.09 18:18 zoorocks Appreciation for The Manuscript

I remember commenting on a post about TTPD songs stream numbers how no one was showing love for The Manuscript (with the fewest streams). This included myself, and I wasn't complaining that The Manuscript got no love either, but noted that maybe it'll resonate with me at some point in the future.
Well apparently, karma is that last cathartic track on a TS album, and it came back to bite me in my soul sooner than I had given it credit for. It's a beautiful end to the double album, thematically, emotionally, and personally.
The Manuscript serves as an epilogue when we reach the end of the double album the first time after having heard these insights into moments of her life. But, you can also place it as the first song of The Anthology (or listen in reverse order), and then it serves as a proem/foretale/prologue for when we use some of the album's songs in our own individual stories.
I cannot wait until she sings this as a surprise song. I feel its resonance will become more felt and thus appreciated.

I have a problem (title). My system is 12700h 3060m 32gb laptop. Screen is lg 55oledb3. The way I start a video is: ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 mpv --vo=gpu-next --target-colorspace-hint --gpu-api=vulkan --gpu-context=waylandvk "LG New York HDR UHD 4K Demo.ts"
Output: [ffmpeg/demuxer] mpegts: start time for stream 1 is not set in estimate_timings_from_pts [ffmpeg/demuxer] mpegts: stream 1 : no TS found at start of file, duration not set [ffmpeg/demuxer] mpegts: Could not find codec parameters for stream 1 (Audio: aac ([15][0][0][0] / 0x000F), 0 channels): unspecified sample format [ffmpeg/demuxer] Consider increasing the value for the 'analyzeduration' (0) and 'probesize' (5000000) options (+) Video --vid=1 (hevc 3840x2160 25.000fps) (+) Audio --aid=1 (aac) [HDR Layer] wayland compositor lacking color management protocol.. The problem is not a cable, have tested 3 of them, one of which in a shop, result is the same. If I open a video in normal mode - it plays great. GPU utilization between 90-100%, doesnt overheat (70-75 Celsius).
Any help is appreciated.

2024.06.09 03:42 Zhentharym Salvation's Edge 4th Encounter (Verity) Guide

Warning, this may not be entirely correct, in which case I will update it where possible. This is based on a combination of information gathered from people's streams and Reddit comments. Hopefully this will help point people in the right direction.

General Encounter Info

At the start of each phase, three random players will be teleported into separate arenas that are replicas of the front of the main room (each person solo). The three other players remain in the main room. The solo rooms all have three statues (left, mid, right), representing the three solo guardians. The order is random but it will always be those three players, and they are identical in order across the three solo rooms. Each statue also has a symbol above it. Each statue has a different symbol, and it again identical across the rooms.
The main room will also have the three statues at the front of the room, but with 3D shapes above it instead of 2D symbols. These 3D shapes represent a combination of two 2D symbols (eg, cylinder = circle + square). The main room also has 6 statues in the back, where you initially spawn.
Knights spawn in both rooms and drop symbols when killed. Killing all three knights in the main room will spawn an unstoppable champion, which will respawn the knights when defeated.
There are 4 mechanics that happen during the encounter. 1st and 2nd are the completion of the main room and solo room statues. These are independent of each other, save for the initial callout, and happen simultaneously. 3rd is the freeing of solo people. This occurs after 6 symbol interactions, regardless of room, and is just a 'timewaster' to slow you down. Do this when it occurs. 4th is freeing the fireteam. This happens after both statue mechanics are complete.

Completing Main Room Statues

The goal of this phase is to give each main room statute the shape corresponding to the two symbols NOT above that statue in the solo rooms. For example, if the left statue has a triangle above it in the solo room, the goal is to make the main room statue have a cylinder (circle + square).
This is done by swapping symbols between two statues at a time. Dissecting a symbol from a statue primes it, and once two symbols are primed, they swap positions.
For example, if your calls are STC, and your main room shapes are SC, TS and CT, the goal is to make them TC, SC and TS. Start by dissecting an S into left and T into mid, which swaps them and results in TC, SS, CT (left is now correct). Next dissect an S into mid and C into right, swapping them and making TC, SC, TS (all correct).

Completing Solo Room Statues

The goal of this mechanic is for each solo player to pick up the two symbols NOT above their statue. For example, if player 1 has a circle above theirs, they want to pick up the triangle and square symbols.
Each solo room has two giant, alternating symbols on the far wall. These can be any combo of two symbols (circle, square, or triangle) including two of the same. This corresponds to the buffs that knights in that room will drop.
You can deposit a symbol in a different player's statue to add that symbol to that player's possible symbols. However, each player cannot have more than two symbols, so the additional symbol will only take effect if that player sends one of their symbols away (to a different player). As an additional difficulty, you cannot end this phase with any of the symbols you started with in order to proceed, so you need to trade at least twice. First you'll trade so that you have two copies of YOUR symbol, then trade again twice to get rid of both of those. If you are lucky and start with two of your symbol, you can skip the first trade.
For example, if the players have S, T and C above their statues and begin with TS, CT, and SC respectively, player 1 will deposit T in player 2's statue, player 2 will deposit C in player 3's statue, and player 3 will deposit S in player 1's statue. Each player now has two of their respective buff (SS, TT and CC). Now each player will deposit each buff into both statues, one at a time (do not pick up both at once as they will combine into a 3D shape). This will result in all players no longer having any of their statue or original symbols.
Once this is done (or if you got lucky with the initial symbols), each solo player then grabs those two symbols and can exit their room through the close wall, teleporting back to the main room.

Freeing the Solo Guardians

When all three solo guardians become ghostly, they will be able to see the statue of one of the other solo players glowing in the spawn statue area. They must take it in turns to call out which position each of them is in. The three main room guardians must take each solo player's ghost (which are just randomly around the room - make sure you know what everyone's ghost looks like) and deposit it at the corresponding statue in the spawn area to free them.

Free the Fireteam

Once all 6 players are back in the main room, a wave of enemies will spawn. Once all enemies are defeated, five players will become ghosts (like when you die). Each 'ghostly' player will be able to see one of the six spawn statues. They must call out which player the statue corresponds to and which location it is at. Whichever player isn't ghostly must go up to each player, grab their ghost, and deposit it in their corresponding statue to free them. Once all 5 players are freed, the round ends.

2024.06.08 07:03 IrreliventPerogi Things to do in lieu of being able to SKONG

So, this sub needs a serious reality check. I'm not defending TC, they've been dumb, but at worst they've made a series of poor business decisions. Your mental health doesn't need to hinge on what Industry Insider Skung McFindel speculates or whether or not Silksong will get a release date in the upcoming X Station premier event. But instead of being an old man yelling at clouds, here's a series of things you can do in the meantime. None of these lists are ordered and are all purely stream of consciousness, I can't even confidently call this a best-of:

Games:

Outer Wilds - Tiny Physics Sim Solar System, wide as a puddle, deep as an ocean. You get used to the ship controls within an hour, I promise. Don't look anything up, go in blind. If you need help, ask outerwilds This game will hurt you, then heal you. My personal favorite game, and quite possibly the tightest blending of ludic and narrative elements yet achieved in gaming.
Environmental Station Alpha - A Metroidvania in the very old school Medroid (as good as people thought the OG Metroid was back in '86.) Very good before the credits, extraordinary in the post-game and post-post-game.
Baba is You - Made by the same guy as ESA and is the game he's best known for. A block slide puzzle game where some of the blocks are actually words that spell out the rules of the level. Don't worry it's actually far more confusing than it sounds. If Skong arrives prior to the heat death of the universe, this game will see you there.
Balatro - The current deck builder roguelike indie darling. No gambling is involved but it will occupy the space in your brain responsible for gambling addiction.
Celeste - "Hey, what if the White Palace was an entire game, and the Path of Pain was just the back 2/3ds of that game's content?" Weirdly chill for how that pitch made it sound.
Tunic - Isometric Zelda with a tiny pinch of soulslike. Mysterious puzzles abound. Progress is marked by unlocking bits of the (gorgeous) diegetic game manual. Stupidly rewarding brain teaser.
What Remains of Edith Finch - Walking Sim/Area exploration done right. Tragic tale of the collapse of the once great Finch family, potentially the result of a curse. Worth a playthrough for the Fish canerychapter alone, but it's all great stuff.
Disco Elysium - Pinical of CRPG design. Phenomenal writing and I say that without the need to add the for a game apology tag. One note, this game is communist, like "the head writer allegedly had a bust of Lenin on his desk," communist. I am aggressively not communist by any stretch of the imagination, which should stand as a testament to this game's quality that I am full-throatedly recommending it.
Return of the Obra Din - Mystery game by the Papers Please guy. (Screw it, Papers Please is on the list as well). You're an insurance agent trying to discover what happened to the disappeared and now returned-abandoned Obra Din passenger ship. Go in blind, because mystery game.
Steam World Dig 2 - A really good Metroidvania with some novel mechanics. I honestly don't remember much about this game other than it's gas.
The Beginner's Guide - A game from The Stanly Parable guy. Go in blind.
SOMA - From the Amnesia people. Gameplay is whatever but it's a fantastic horror story that makes you think some rather philosophical thoughts.
Untitled Goose Game - I will find your house and emulsify your dog if you try to have any philosophical thoughts about this game.
OMORI - Wierd RPG maker game. I dig it.
Wandersong - A disgustingly pleasant puzzle platformer with one of the more criminally underrated OSTs in gaming. There is a dedicated dance button that serves no mechanical purpose.

Movies:

Captain Phillips - "Based on a True Story" of the eponymous Captain Phillips as his ship is taken hostage by Somalian Pirates. Opens with the worst exposition scene I've ever seen and ends with quite possibly the single best scene of Tom Hank's career. This was the head pirate's first time acting... ever, and the guy honestly steals a few scenes from TOM HANKS. It's great.
Arrival - Did you know Dennis Villenvue directed things before Dune? This is one, a first contact film that you're better off knowing as little as possible going in.
Margin Call - Like Wolf of Wall Street but nothing like Wolf of Wall Street but exactly like Wolf of Wall Street. Better? Probably. Warning: Kevin Spacey is in this one.
The Negotiator - An obscure one in Samuel L. Jackson's filmography, all things considered. I like it but your mileage may vary. A hostage negotiator takes hostages to clear his name for murder and solve the conspiracy actually responsible for the murder. Warning: Also KS, this is the last Spacey flick.
Rain Man - The archetypical Hollywood Autist Savant film, yet somehow manages to be a thousand times more touching and careful with its subject matter than most of its niche.
Upside Down - A rather bad YA dystopia love story that I will not spend one breath defending. It may well have only one fan and that fan is me.
Lemonade Mouth - Disney Channel Original Movie but they decided to make a good one.
Ford vs Ferrari - Fast Cars 👍great cast 😎
Top Gun - This isn't a recommendation for the film itself so much as a recommendation you rewatch it and realize it's secretly a sports movie. Now that I think about it, they both are.

Books:

Mistborn - You may have heard of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere, a series of fantasy worlds in a shared setting. Innovative (but contentious) approach to magic, renowned for his depiction of mental illness. The first Mistborn trilogy is the best segway into his works, with The Final Empire being the first entry. A victorian dark fantasy heist novel.
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell - Also Victorian Fantasy but in that it is literally set in Victorian England. English Magic is thought lost until a genuine magician shows up, the dreadfully dreary Mr. Norrell. But even he may well be more than England and the world are ready for, and Norrell himself is woefully unprepared for what his arrival will produce. If the prose and wyrd magic speak to you but the (deliberately) dry and stuffy victorian setting doesn't, maybe try the author's other work, Piranisi.
Empire of Silence - The first book in the Suneater series. The memoir of Hadrian Marlowe, Halfmortal, Savior of Humanity and Genosidal Despot, explaining exactly how the Sollan Empire came to be short a Sun the the galaxy of the Cilicin scourge. Openly derived from things like Dune, Book of the New Sun, and a dozen other places, but it does some really cool stuff with all of its borrowed toys.
Malazan - Where to start with Malazan? Epic Fantasy on a scale that makes all other Epics need to resend their claim to the title. There are two "main" series that form the core of the Malazan mythos, but the Malazan Book of the Fallen is the one that gets the most hype. It begins with Gardens of the Moon. It's complex stuff, but pay attention and be okay with not knowing everything in the moment. The authors (two of them) are anthropologists and archeologists by trade, and so reading an ancient document without most of the context is something they are deliberately simulating. You will know what literally is occurring, but the road from concussion and even mild derision to heartfelt understanding is deliberately the Malazan experience.
Out of the Silent Planet - So, C. S. Lewis' Narnia books are probably his weakest fiction, tbh. Out of the Silent Planet, and the Space Trilogy is weird in ways I really dig. Yes, it's Christian allegory and that stuff is very present, but if you aren't utterly put off by it I recommend it.
The Screwtape Letters - More C. S. Lewis Christian Propaganda. Probably Lewis at his most overt, and yet, weirdly, this is the one that often gets the most praise even outside Christian circles. A series of letters from an arch-demon to his nephew on how to corrupt a particular human. There is genuinely a ton of great anti-advice in here irrespective of one's faith.
Blindsight - A science fiction novel detailing a group of post-humans engaging in first contact on behalf of Earth with an alien vessel. I won't say anything more because Idk if I can do it justice without spoiling. Linked a PDF version because the author put it out on Creative Commons.
Moby Dick - The Great American Novel. Not nearly as hard as people make it out to be. The key is to know that the Narrator is iamverysmart and that's the joke. Most of it's extensive whale science and tortured whaling metaphors were nonsense even in Meilville's day. This is a very, very funny book that all of a sudden makes a good point every once in a while. Also genuinely epic. The key is to not have it be your main book or media intake, just read like one chapter or ~20 pages of chapters (whichever is less) a day and reread the previous day's reading before reading on. It absolutely can support that, and letting it marinate in your head is a delight.
Collected Fictions of Jorge Luis Borges - Borges is just on a different level. Space out reading like with Moby Dick. Very short stories, yet somehow with more worldbuilding than half the Epics I've mentioned here and yet its all perfectly paced. His work helped spawn the Magic Realism genre. Writing the magical mundane and the mundane magical. An SCP writer could probably quit on the spot if they wrote a single article half as good as the weakest Borges story. Described once as "better than food" and I agree. (If you're familiar with the "Library of Babel," that's one of the stories in here.
Worm - A web serial rather than a traditional novel. A reconstruction of the Superhero genre with some phenomenal character work, action, and a stupendously thought-out world. Praised for its escalating stakes. Follow Taylor Hebert, a teenage girl recently gifted the ability to control bugs, as she does the wrong things for the right(?) reasons. Unreliable narrator, not in being false but deeply biased. Opens with some high-school YA drama but it quickly fades away and is used well enough to justify it's presence. Has some rough edges and a slow arc or two (web serial) but is a shining example of its mediumAlso there's KaijuCheck out Twig as a second stop in the author's bibliography if you like this.

Shows:

24 - The escipades of Special Agent Jack Bauer, each season is 24 1-hour episodes spanning a single crisis in "real" time. The first season is the best by any objective metric, but it's a good show through season 5. Season 5 is what a show looks like when it jumps the shark and it somehow works. (This isn't my usual trash taste, that's literally the fan consensus) You can safely drop it after that.
Fringe - The FBI has a special division that deals with anomalies, called the Fringe division. Crisis of the Week weird science stuff with an over-arching plot. If God well and truly has abandoned humanity, it is because John Noble never received an Emmy for his performance as Walter Bishop. Shares the dubious honor of being a J. J. Abhrems piloted Mystery Box show with a nebulous threat of cancelation and several half-endings with Lost, but it manages to end 78% better off than Lost did.
Parks and Recreation - So, this thread has been mostly mainstream, but now we're in straight up normie territory. But there is at least one person reading this who hasn't watched Parks and Rec and you should fix that before I feed you the Untitled Goose Game Philosipher's emulsiphied dog.

Music Albums:

Neon Theater by Their Dogs Were Astronauts - I mean, there isn't much reason to give a detailed rec of music... just listen to it!
The Trick to Life by The Hoosiers
Four Winds by the Oh Hellos - Technically a cycle of four albums, sue me.
Wandersong OST by A Shell in the Pit - Genuinely, this stuff is great.
There's more but idk how close I'm getting to Reddit's character limit with all these embedded links. This post is mostly an affectionate jab at the community's hysteria, hence the flair, but if any of you are genuinely at a loss of how to spend your time without thinking about Silksong, here's a place to start.
Also, Reddit is screwing with my Grammarly and there is no way I'm SPAG editing this manually so have fun with that.

How IPTV is Changing the Entertainment Industry

Introduction

Internet Protocol Television, or IPTV, is a disruptive technology that is revolutionizing how people consume entertainment content. By delivering television services over the internet, IPTV Trends offers a versatile and personalized viewing experience that is reshaping the entertainment industry.

The Evolution of Television

Traditional TV vs. IPTV

The traditional television model, characterized by cable and satellite services, is being challenged by the emergence of IPTV. Unlike traditional TV, IPTV leverages internet protocols to deliver content, offering viewers greater flexibility and control over their viewing experience.

The Decline of Cable and Satellite TV

With the rise of IPTV Trends, there has been a noticeable decline in the popularity of cable and satellite TV services. Consumers are increasingly opting for IPTV subscriptions due to the wide range of content options and the convenience of on-demand viewing.

How IPTV Works

Internet Protocol Explained

IPTV operates by transmitting television content using Internet Protocol (IP) networks. This allows for the delivery of high-quality video and audio streams over the internet, enabling viewers to access their favorite shows and movies on various devices.

IPTV Infrastructure and Technology

The infrastructure behind IPTV includes servers, content delivery networks (CDNs), and user-end devices such as set-top boxes and smart TVs. These components work together to ensure seamless delivery of content to viewers, regardless of their location or device.

Advantages of IPTV Over Traditional TV

Flexibility and On-Demand Content

One of the key advantages of IPTV is its flexibility. Unlike traditional TV, which follows a fixed schedule, IPTV allows viewers to access content on-demand, enabling them to watch their favorite shows and movies whenever they want.

Cost-Effectiveness

IPTV subscriptions are often more cost-effective than traditional cable or satellite packages. With IPTV Trends, viewers can choose from a variety of subscription plans that suit their budget, without compromising on the quality or variety of content available.

Interactive Features

IPTV offers interactive features that enhance the viewing experience. Viewers can pause, rewind, and fast-forward live TV, as well as access additional content and information through interactive applications.

IPTV and Consumer Preferences

Personalized Viewing Experience

IPTV Trends provides a personalized viewing experience by offering recommendations based on viewers' preferences and viewing history. By analyzing user data, IPTV services can suggest content that is tailored to individual tastes, ensuring a more enjoyable viewing experience.

Accessibility and Convenience

IPTV allows viewers to access content on multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs. This flexibility enables viewers to watch their favorite shows and movies wherever they are, providing a convenient and accessible entertainment solution.

IPTV Providers and Services

Major IPTV Providers

Several major providers dominate the IPTV market, offering a wide range of services to subscribers. These providers include industry leaders such as AT&T's U-verse, Verizon FiOS, and international providers like BT TV and Orange TV.

Types of IPTV Services

IPTV services can be categorized into three main types: live TV, video on demand (VOD), and time-shifted media. Live TV services offer real-time broadcasts of television channels, while VOD services provide access to a vast library of on-demand content. Time-shifted media services allow viewers to watch programs that have already aired at their convenience.

The Role of Streaming Services in IPTV's Rise

Comparison with OTT Services

Over-the-top (OTT) streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video have contributed to the rise of IPTV. While OTT services operate independently of traditional TV networks, they share many similarities with IPTV, including internet-based delivery and on-demand content.

Integration of Streaming Platforms with IPTV

Many IPTV providers have integrated popular streaming services into their offerings, allowing subscribers to access a wider range of content through a single platform. This integration enhances the viewing experience and provides added value for subscribers.

Impact on Traditional Media Companies

Shifts in Advertising Revenue

The rise of IPTV Trends has led to significant shifts in advertising revenue for traditional media companies. Advertisers are increasingly allocating their budgets towards digital platforms, including IPTV, as they seek to reach targeted audiences more effectively.

Adaptation Strategies by Traditional Broadcasters

To remain competitive, traditional broadcasters are adopting new strategies to adapt to the changing landscape. Many are launching their own IPTV services or partnering with streaming platforms to reach audiences on digital channels.

IPTV and Content Creation

Opportunities for New Content Creators

IPTV Trends has created new opportunities for content creators to reach global audiences. With lower barriers to entry and the ability to distribute content online, independent creators can produce and distribute their content more easily than ever before.

Influence on Production and Distribution

The shift to IPTV has also influenced how content is produced and distributed. Content creators are focusing on high-quality production values and innovative storytelling to capture viewers' attention in an increasingly competitive landscape.

Challenges Facing IPTV

Technical Issues and Internet Dependency

Despite its many benefits, IPTV Trends faces technical challenges such as buffering and latency, particularly in regions with slower internet speeds. Additionally, the reliance on internet connectivity means that service quality can be affected by network congestion and other factors.

Legal and Regulatory Challenges

IPTV Trends also faces legal and regulatory challenges, including issues related to content licensing and copyright infringement. Governments and regulatory bodies are working to address these challenges and ensure fair competition in the market.

The Future of IPTV

Technological Advancements

The future of IPTV looks promising, with ongoing technological advancements expected to enhance the viewing experience further. Innovations such as 5G connectivity, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality are likely to play significant roles in shaping the next generation of IPTV services.

Predictions for Market Growth

Market analysts predict substantial growth for the IPTV industry in the coming years. As more consumers recognize the benefits of IPTV and as technology continues to improve, the number of IPTV subscribers is expected to increase significantly.

Global Adoption of IPTV

Regional Differences in IPTV Adoption

The adoption of IPTV varies across different regions, depending on factors such as internet infrastructure and consumer preferences. Countries with advanced broadband networks, such as South Korea and Sweden, have higher IPTV penetration rates compared to regions with less developed infrastructure.

Case Studies of IPTV Success

Several countries serve as success stories for IPTV adoption. For example, South Korea's widespread high-speed internet access has made it a leader in IPTV usage. Similarly, in Europe, countries like France and the UK have seen significant growth in IPTV subscriptions due to robust broadband networks and consumer demand for flexible viewing options.

IPTV and the Consumer Market

Demographic Trends

The consumer market for IPTV Trends spans across various demographics, with younger generations being early adopters due to their familiarity with digital technologies. However, older demographics are also increasingly embracing IPTV Trends as they recognize its benefits and convenience.

Consumer Behavior Insights

Understanding consumer behavior is crucial for IPTV Trends providers to tailor their services effectively. Data analytics play a significant role in identifying viewing patterns, preferences, and trends among users. This information helps providers optimize their content offerings and user experience to better meet the needs of their audience.

IPTV and Advertising

Changes in Advertising Strategies

The rise of IPTV Trends has prompted significant changes in advertising strategies. Traditional TV commercials are being supplemented or replaced by targeted ads delivered through IPTV platforms. These ads can be personalized based on user data, allowing advertisers to reach their target audience more effectively.

Benefits for Advertisers

IPTV Trends offers several benefits for advertisers, including improved targeting, measurement, and flexibility. By delivering ads to specific demographic groups or individual users, advertisers can maximize the impact of their campaigns. Additionally, IPTV platforms provide detailed analytics that enable advertisers to track the performance of their ads in real-time and make adjustments as needed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, IPTV Trends is reshaping the entertainment industry by offering a more flexible, interactive, and personalized viewing experience. With its ability to deliver content over the internet, IPTV Trends is challenging traditional TV providers and reshaping consumer expectations. While there are challenges to overcome, such as technical issues and regulatory hurdles, the future looks promising for IPTV Trends as technological advancements continue to drive innovation and market growth.

2024.06.07 03:28 JetPackFuture104 Lucky Boys Confusion write-up and why you should listen to all their work.

I talk a lot. Deal with it.
Since 2022, I've been listening to and absolutely swooning over the Chicago band, Lucky Boys Confusion. Currently consisting of lead vocalist/lyricist Kaustubh "Stubhy" Pandav, vocalist/lyricist/guitarist Adam Krier, bassist Jason Schultejann, and drummer Ryan Fergus. Lead guitarist Joe Sell passed away in 2012.
So here's a guide through into their main discography.
But really quick, if you're not up to read all of this, if you have to listen to only one album to be converted into an LBC shill like me: try 2001's Throwing the Game. It gives you the most variety of what these guys are known for: hip-hop/reggae influences with fast and punchy punk. Your second best option is Commitment, which is more overtly pop punk.
1. Growing out of It (1998)
-their independently-released debut album. Featuring material from their harder to find debut EPs.
-guitars can be very clean, but there's still an energy to the songs.
-Ska influences can be found on "Deja Vous" and "Slow Down"
-they get heavier on "Keep Talking" and "One to the Right"
-It's a requirement for every LBC fan to have the chorus of "Dumb Pop Song" ingrained into their memory.
-the most hip-hop tinged of their catalog ("Gwendolyn B. Sings Sin," Stubhy and Adam rapping on "LBC", the record scratch effects on "Keep Talking," etc.)
-a whopping 19 tracks.
-You can clearly tell they were just messing around in the studio and that sense of young fun shows throughout the record.
-"One to the Right" I remember Stubhy saying is a very personal song for him. It's the closer (minus an untitled, hidden track cover of "Do you miss me?")
-The music video for "Arizona (stand)" is introduced by Jim Adkins, which made me smile like an idiot.
2. Throwing the Game (2001)
-this was their major label debut (on the rather infamous Elektra Records).
=produced by Howard Benson, who'd later go on to produce Three Days Grace's "One-X".
-"40/80," "Fred Astaire," "Do you Miss Me?," "Child's Play," and "One to the Right" were re-recorded for this album. Most of them being shorter, faster, heavier, and with better production/mixing. This version of Dumb Pop Song doesn't have a horn section, for example, and this Child's Play is more grittier.
=with One to the Right, the "but I'm growing out of it" part is used as the bridge, whereas in the original GOOI version, it's used as the outro, with a different bridge.
-Other highlights are "Saturday Night" (very pop punk, save for the reggae-tinged first two choruses which I love), "3 to 10" (which is them just blasting for three minutes), "City Lights," "One to the Right," and "Slip+Perfect (hidden track)"
+Hell, it just dawned on me: there isn't really a single skippable track on this thing! It's that solid. Maybe the acoustic interlude "Never like this" but aside from that, every damn song has something special about them. This is probably their overall best record.
-The two singles were Fred Astaire (also a fan favorite) and "Bossman [feat. Beenie Man]". The latter of which is a personal favorite as being pretty anthemic.
-Joe gets to flex his guitar skills (40/80). The man always looked incredible with his HH strat.
3. Commitment (2003)
-I think I'm going to "spoil" this album (even in music, spoilers are possible).
-produced by Miguel Happoldt, who worked with Sublime.
-their second and final album under Elektra. As well as their most successful (it didn't take over the world, but it was definitely more than TTG's numbers).
-the album that contains the song "Hey Driver" which is their biggest hit.
=fun fact: there exists an alt. universe where LBC could've been certified mainstream. Elektra sent Hey Driver to a Denver radio station, and if it broke the top 10, it'd be sent to 38 more stations. Hey Driver made it to number 1. But unfortunately, Warner music was going through some restructuring at the time, and because LBC weren't at the top, they ended up getting dropped (like Third Eye Blind). Oof.
=Thus, LBC joins the league of turn-of-the-century one-hit wonder bands like the Marvelous 3 (who were also signed to Elektra), and Caviar (another Chicago band I utterly adore) that had major label backing, and legitimately deserved to be more huge than they were.
=on the flip/bright side of that however, Elektra's been infamous for not treating their bands super fairly, so it was more "good riddance" as Stubhy put it. Less pressure and more creative freedom.
article here: https://illinoisentertainer.com/2017/09/cover-story-lucky-boys-confusion/
+Anyway: Hey Driver was how I discovered LBC. Specifically, in 2017 when I watched the Looney Tunes: Back in Action movie, and this played during the car chase scene. I was in middle school at the time, going through my Blink-182 phase, and this sounded similar enough to their hit Enema -> Untitled era. Ryan's drum tone during this time has that iconic, really cranked up, high pitched Travis Barker-esque snare sound of the time. This would be the only LBC song I knew for the next 5 years.
-The first LBC album I listened to (in 2022, which was the year I graduated high school, so there's a lot of sentimental value here).
-This is them at their most pop-punk. (I cannot stop listening to "Beware." It's an evergreen track for me. Though it does take a lot of cues from Green Day).
=though "Sunday Afternoon" is a straight ahead reggae song. Same with the verses on "Blame."
-And like TTG, it's hit after hit after hit.
="Closer to our Graves" is one of their live staples, "Something to Believe" tackles religion, "Mr. Wilmington" is about a man grieving over his son's suicide, and "Broken" gives off Linkin Park vibes, ngl, and "You Weren't There" is the only one reason the album has its advisory sticker.
=The title track shows off Stubhy's vocal abilities. I'm by no means a great singer, but when I do, I'm basically pining from him.
=The final three tracks (not including the hidden track, "Champions"): "South Union," "Ordinary," and "Medicine and Gasoline," I adore with all my heart. The first is an acoustic interlude, the 2nd an acoustic track that's the band at their most introspective, and the third/closer is an anthemic, uplifting, empowering yet bittersweet ode to yourself, and the people in your life (the band wrote it while feeling sick and tired on tour, remembering the other bands they're playing alongside). Probably their single best song, and one that I try not to listen to often because of how much it moves me. Gives me chills and tingles all down my face (and it's in the Key of D, which is my number 1 favorite note).
-Fun fact: "Hey Driver" features backing gang vocals from the Popoff Brothers (Lit) and some of the guys from Yellowcard. "Ordinary" features backing vocals from, of all bands, the Plain White T's (pre-Delilah).
-My one hot take is "Atari," which was the other single I believe, as well as another fan-favorite, is the one track I often skip, for some reason. Not bad at all, but idk, it kinda feels like it should've been a bonus track or B-side.
+In conclusion: LISTEN TO THIS RECORD IT IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY YOU WILL THANK ME LATER.
4. Red Tape Outtakes [compilation album] (2005)
-currently only available on Bandcamp
-Demos, unreleased, and miscellaneous songs from this time. A lot of them sound like they could've easily been off of Commitment (namely, "Straight from the top" and "Hey."). Both those songs are produced and mixed as though they were good to go for that album. And they offer some great crispy clean pop punk power. "Le Chanson De Soldat" (Soldier Song) was a Japanese bonus track for Commitment.
-"One More Chance" is a more dancy, chill, hip-hop track. Don't know who the guest feature is.
-features official recording of fan-favorite "Rolling Rock," with lead vocals by Adam. Currently, the only version of the song you can stream is the live acoustic version.
=random fun fact: there exists a cover of Rolling Rock (youtube it) by once again, the Plain White T's.
=tangent: the T's are also from the Chicago suburbs, and have been one of LBC's good friends since they both started at the same time, and the T's were friends with Swizzle Tree beforehand, whose lead singer is Stubhy's brother. Which surprised me, considering the T's obviously come off as more accessible and I guess, "family-friendlier," whereas LBC has more of an edge to them. Tom Higgenson has gone on record saying he idolizes Stubhy. Unfortunately, I hear Stubhy can be a bit of dick, so that sucks. Then again, as much as I worship Caviar, Blake Smith comes across as someone I don't know if I'd want to meet in real life.
5. How to Get out Alive [EP] (2006)
-includes a well-received cover of "Anything Anything." I haven't listened to the original yet, but I hear some people prefer this over it. On the live acoustic version, Stubhy is noticeably wailing more than he is on the recording, and it's awesome.
-"When Bad News Gets Worse" has a chorus that's utterly earwormy. Hell, that whole song is one I can have on repeat.
-"Cigarettes" and "Like Rats from a Sinking Ship" further showcase their ear for hooks. Especially in choruses.
-Ryan's snare tone gets dampened, but I still f with it.
6. Closing Arguments [compilation album] (2009)
-like Red Tape Outtakes, this is a comp. album full of rarities, b-sides, demos, and other miscellaneous material that never got properly released. Though the opener, "This Town ain't big enough for both of us" is new. The album also features an original, rougher and longer version of When Bad News Gets Worse (most notably, with a different chorus).
-The album has more alternative and even indie tinges. Adam brings his piano out more.
-"Should've been me" has them embracing more jazzy elements, while "Hedonist II" is more punkier.
-last one to feature Joe Sell. Making "Leave on the Light" feel more emotional.
7. Stormchasers (2017)
-the band's most recent, and triumphant record.
-considered by the band members to be their best album.
-the title track, iirc, is inspired by Joe. And as expected, it's a fairly emotional ride about living dangerously. The kind of song you want to listen to while driving fast at dusk. Very re-listenable.
-My least favorite tracks are probably opener "I slept with the devil," "It's After Midnight," and "Insomniac," though they're all still good enough as they are.
+The best song is probably "Sun in my Eyes." It only grew on me more with time, and it's another anthemic LBC song that when it gets me in the right mood: sends chills all throughout my body. The verses are very uplifting, but the triumphant chorus brings more bittersweetness ("how did we go from getting so high to being shallow?".....we're making it up as it goes away."). An introspective rocker about growing up and moving on in an ever-changing life. And again: D major. Automatic win.
+"Name in Lights" comes right after, and it's also a highlight. One of the more heavier songs of their career, to where it fully feels more like crunchy alternative. One nitpick I do have is it features the "millennial whoop" that's almost ripped straight from the T's "Our Time Now." But if you can look past that: grade A.
+Among other greats are "Burn a Little Brighter" and "Good Luck" which touch on nostalgia.
+"White Collar" is another endlessly re-listenable Drop D ripper, and "A Candle in the Window" closes the album out on a similar note to "Leave on the Light." Where you're realizing "oh shit, this is really over now. Don't leave, stay...." And props to Adam's noisy, almost psychedelic guitar solo in that track.
+Overall: a moving comeback release that's full of life.

-They haven't released any new music since 2017, but they've still given us plenty of great material over the decades. Stormchasers is as satisfying of an album as I think a fan could wish for.
They never really stopped playing shows, though it's clearly become more of an annual thing for them rather than touring. I think the one show they did in 2022 was Riot Fest.
They also have a Live & Acoustic album they recorded at Beat Kitchen if you're interested. It contains material from all their pre-Stormchasers stuff. Including "Selectively Antisocial," a song from Stubhy's pre-LBC band, Farmboy, whom he was in alongside Ryan. Haven't listened to the original yet, but this version is extremely jazzy and I love it. That's the great thing about LBC that they've recieved praise for: a band with eclectic tendencies.
Check them out, love them forever. You'll thank me later.
In conclusion: they are the number one band I associate with Gurren Lagann. Their music fits that anime like a glove for me.
