Take a guess!
I'm waiting for embark results to come in, but I thought it would be fun to see what other people think. I'm guessing something like Lab/Chihuahua/Boston. She has a wicked under bite and used to have snaggle teeth. Those broke off during a biking accident. 45 pounds.

2024.05.16 22:23 yaqu3 What bike to get?

I now live a 20 min walk from school in a hilly area of Boston. I have no clue where to start looking. I need something mainly for the roundtrip to school. Ideally something compact (which I imagine means folding bike, but I don't know anything about these either lol). Would appreciate any recommendations.
I was looking into folding ebikes with 26" wheels and they looked good? My budget is up to $1000 for a bike that will last me a long time and is nice.

2024.05.16 19:06 dhonis8 First Service - 2023 MT09

I’m coming up on 700 miles on my new bike and I’m wondering if anyone has any places in the greater Boston area that won’t charge $380 for first break in service? That seems like a total rip off for an oil change/filter change/chain check. I would do it myself but I don’t wanna void any warranty.

2024.05.15 20:42 Gmartnz New England Summer Trip Advice

Hi all! I live in Texas but work for Dartmouth. I will be up in Hanover for a few weeks starting at the end of June into July. After being in Hanover, I would like to take advantage of my work flexibility and stay in New England longer. I thought about taking the Dartmouth Coach back to Boston and going to the Cape or possibly Newburyport. The biggest hurdle I am facing transportation logistics. If renting a car will be worth it for a mini road trip of sorts to multiple places, I would consider it, but I am also not against simplicity if there is a great summer destination I can get to without a car and just walk or bike when there. I am not needing a crazy night scene, but outdoors, shops and decent food would be good. Any suggestions on worthwhile destinations or tips for logistics would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

2024.05.15 14:50 Falzon03 Dirt bike tuning/shop

I'm looking for a shop that can tune my carbed bikes. They are far from stock so I'd need someone who has experience with modded/race bikes. I don't need anything other than the carbs dialed in. I can get them close but never have been good at getting them perfect.
I'm in the epping area but work in Boston so anywhere from Boston through Manchester would be fine.

2024.05.15 07:54 blbrd30 External Cabling Endurance Bike

Your level of experience with cycling
Most of my life, although not consistently
What's your price range, and have you considered second hand?
<$1k preferred, can reasonably do up to $2.3k. yes I'm up for a used bike
What's your intention with the bike - commuting, fitness, touring, sport, etc?
commuting, group rides, long event rides, not cycling for time but for fun and fitness
How far will you be riding, and how often?
regularly maybe 20-30 miles. expecting to do 50+ mile rides semi regularly. thinking to prep for the STP 200 mile ride on this bike
Riding conditions: roads, pavement, trails, single-track, off-road? Flat or hilly? Traffic and weather.
roads, pavement, paved trails. initially mostly flat but may move to hilly area. mostly not in traffic, although I may sometimes be in traffic. weather could be anything-sun and rain
Your location (even approximate) can help other locals familiar with your conditions, too.
Boston and DC. May do rides in Chicago and the PNW as well (although PNW is a ways away at this point)
A bit about yourself: height, weight, and level of fitness can all help people understand your needs better.
5'11" 170lbs. pretty low level of fitness for a cyclist. I can usually crank out 30+ mile rides without too much issue, but I'm not the fastest while doing that. for specialized bikes, the recommended size is 56 cm and I'm usually fluctuating between a medium and large frame size depending on the brand
what I'm looking for:
endurance road bike with external cabling. I'm planning to do my own maintenance so caliper breaks would be a plus, although not necessary. my last bike was a gravel bike and I didn't care for it. I would much rather just stick with straight endurance. this bike needs to be able to handle both a panier and a trailer, at the same time. I'm also considering putting mudguards on
Edit: I'll also be carrying this up and down stairs so a lighter frame would be nice. I've used shimano 105's in the past and really liked them, although I know at this budget that's probably a stretch. If there's something just outside the budget that hits everything I'm asking for feel free to send that too. Thanks in advance!

2024.05.15 05:46 Magnetik12 Is it GERD or not GERD

Hey everyone, I’ve finally turned to the Reddit community. I’m not sure where’s the best place to post this but there is an element of GERD and is very likely and a root cause for at least a large portion of it so will try here first. Apologies for how lengthy it is.
I’m a M38, obese through childhood and young adulthood, hypertension since teens that was treated with metoprolol (had palpitations as well) and even high cholesterol that was finally treated with statin in early twenties. Around the age of 25 I took last 2 years to lose about 150 pounds going from 360 to 210, (all natural from diet and exercise).
Shortly after this, I started getting one side numbness and tingling, rate headaches, and sometimes along with or separately bouts of chest pain and palpitations, sweating, hot flashes, left shoulder pain, arm pain, dizziness. This lead to a decade long investigation that lead to no real solution. Countless stress tests, echo/ekg, holters, blood work, head and neck MRIs, dopplers, EEGs, etc, no real diagnosis was made. The only thing that change was about 2 years after switched from metoprolol to losartan, as it was more appropriate now after the weight loss, which a doc thought was just the right thing to do and had no explanation for my symptoms otherwise. No more rate control since 2015.
Ultimately, after 10 years of this… For the neurological symptoms, it was a deemed hemiplegic or basilar migraines, with aura, with or without headache. I was told hey, it hasn’t killed you yet, so that alone tells us at least it’s not fatal. For the cardiac symptoms, anxiety or some type health anxiety, or something in the psych realm was deemed the culprit. I was told it’s best you ignore it, or jump on a medley of different drugs, which I was told likely won’t benefit me. Imagine having to live with all this, and being told by doctors to essentially ignore it all. I asked the crucial question, at least to me, that I’ll go ahead and listen to their advice, but what is my threshold? At what point am I to rush to an ER? Most people would run to one if they had these symptoms, as neuro could be stroke, and cardiac could be heart attack. They had no answer for this. After this decade long hunt, I spent a year in misery, personal issues, my blood pressure medications was doubled in dose after a breakup, then doubled again 2 weeks later (it was stressful), all during Covid year 2020. Unfortunately over the decade I slowly gained back 100 of the weight I had lost. Back 290 pounds. During this year I lost 30 of it again, down to 260 In 2021, I had pretty crazy bout of chest pain, and was offered do a coronary CTA, came back completely clean. No obstruction at all in vessels, and zero calcium score. This was reassuring enough to me at least cardiac wise I can rest easy(to some degree). For the neuro side, CGRP antagonist was on the table to try, but it would just be throwing medications at it, along with gabapentin and topamax as options. The latter were tried, but were not tolerated at all. In 2022, I had my first bout with covid, moderate, it left its lingering symptoms (which are hard to discern as I had a large amount of the symptoms of long covid for years before this too) An endoscopy was done. As a GI doc said since you’ve been having such a long list of symptoms for so long, let’s explore the GI route since you’ve ruled out the rest from what it seems. Endoscopy found a small hiatal hernia. And the trail went cold. Can a small one perhaps cause such symptoms?
Which brings us to the most current situation. March of 2023 I decided to do the stationary bike, high resistance and high effort for 30 minutes with HR at about 130, then 5 more minutes I ramped up effort even more to HR of 150. Towards the last minute or two o started getting chest pain. I obviously should have stopped but I figured hey I get some type of pain like this time to time let’s just hit the 35 minute mark. Big mistake.
When I stopped, the pain persisted. And took a while to get better. Like an hour or so. And it felt different than anything I’ve felt before. Felt radiating to arm and jaw. By nightfall it was fine, next morning it all started again when I got out of bed. I wish I had gone to ER so at least they’d run some tests on the spot. I contacted my cardiologist, who I saw four days later. He said there’s nothing to be done, even though I told him these are different symptoms, and seem to come from exertion. He offered me a repeat of the CT or a trip to the cath lab. I let him decide and he went with CT since it was non invasive.
2 weeks later I got the test done, and this time they found a 10% Non calcified plaque in the proximal LAD, the calcium score still zero. He said this doesn’t explain your symptoms, but since we have evidence of CAD, you have to be put on aspirin 81. Additionally, he offered Ranexa, as he thought maybe this could be microvascular disease. Ultimately he did not believe this to be new and different like I’ve been saying and jumbled it all into the last 15 years or so. No enzymes got tested, which I really wish had been.
*****I now had this exertional left arm pain, wrist pain on the outside, numbness, chest pain, pressure, dizziness, jaw pain, pain behind left ear, left side of neck headache, bouts of nausea and sweating, shortness of breath even. This was all way worse than what I used to deal with. And different too
My pcp advised against his trial medicine, as it has a very little success and plenty of adverse effects. Days past by, no improvement, I’m getting these symptoms on the daily. An incident 3 months later in summer after swift walk to the car after eat a large cookie (I include that because maybe it was GI?). For hours I felt tingly in the chest, light headed, just confused. My girlfriend even noticed I just seemed out of it. Chest felt tight and painful. It eventually got better many hours later.
Mid summer I went for a pulmonary consult, at my doc’s behest, only for this doc to rush me to an er on suspicion of an aortic dissection. They did a full CTA of head neck chest abdomen and pelvis….. nothing but unnecessary radiation and contrast exposure.
Late summer I had a week of sweating and light headed ness, now 6 months out from the exercise incident from March. I went to another cardiologist, who had no idea why my pressure was suddenly 90/60 (literally no changes have been made). I was told to cut my medication dose in half. Could this be due to the contrast from the CT earlier??
He ordered a stress test, my first one since then, which came back subpar 6-7 minutes only but I did hit the target rate. I may have called quits 1 minute or 2 early as I saw my blood pressure skyrocketing. It was considered a normal test regardless. That night I had the worst left arm pain lasting hours, but I was told there’s no explanation. I did start getting very intense headaches, ones that I still get
Interestingly, 1 month later, my blood pressure was suddenly now high, 150/80. Suddenly. no explanation why it was low then, and none for why it’s high now. We went back to regular dose of the medication.
I got a neuro consult again to see if it could all connect, autonomic testing was done for dysautonomia, came back normal. Back to Square 1 again.
In the fall of 2023 I tried a bout of PPI as all docs were pushing for this , nothing changed, but it did help with the occasional heartburn I got. I even gave a month try to benzodiazepine as to rule out psych causes, and then tried an Ssri for 2 months. Nothing, other than sedation.
This new year I caved and started metoprolol again. I was told maybe it will help if it’s microvascular disease. It wasn’t exactly indicated but at this point I was willing OT try it all. Initially it had some benefit I think, then dose was doubled in February but not much changed. I still take it presently, as my base HR had recently been higher than normal anyways.
In these last few months, all of this persists. And subjectively I think it’s getting worse. I’ve been feeling cold for months, but then feel like sweat at the same time (not drenched just clamy). Get bouts of nausea even at rest. All of the cardiac symptoms episodic pain dizziness with chest shoulder jaw back neck ear, etc all still there. Even from left arm it runs down like into the palm and pinky. I even get them during sex I just power through. Stressful moments also incite them. I cannot say for sure, but possibly food or spicy food can do it as well.
My cardiologists still believe nothing is new here, even though it feels completely different to me after that exercise incident. They suggest coping as is, or going in for another coronary CTA, or finally take a trip to a cath lab. Essentially they say objectively they see nothing, but if I keep complaining those are the best routes.( I was offered nitro as well but scared to take it) My neuro says unlikely they are related, but it they could be to the possible migraines. At least the new headaches. There’s some possible link with migraine and chest pain. Only way to know is try a cgrp. He’s going with Qulipta. My GI doc says it could be vagus nerve related, and/or esophageal, so let’s try a TCA, amitriptyline. I’ve also been suggested to try a higher dose of Xan.
——— I have no idea which trail to follow????
My labs are normal, -except CRP (I believe around 40 if I recall correctly) which is often elevated, -hsCRP of 1.8 which was moderate risk category, -and CPK which is often high as well around 400 but my docs blame it on statin use or maybe exercise (idk about that no one entertains it as cardiac but they must have their reasons)
I really don’t want to sit on all this and find out later I didn’t take the action necessary. I’m afraid of something serious happening. And daily this is interfering with my life.
My concern is maybe during that exercise I did something. Initially was concerned about damage from really high blood pressure during, coronary dissection maybe? Something else damaged? Or something missed? Did I make something worse? Does anyone think it’s all related to my past symptoms?
What could have happened with this exercise incident??
Any input, advice, suggestions, similar stories, appreciated.
If you made it this far. Thank you so much for reading. Take care.

2024.05.14 22:37 HRJafael Bike Month event in Greenfield looks at favorite cycling spots, room for improvement

https://archive.is/FHxDY
In celebration of Bay State Bike Month and in anticipation of a new Franklin County Regional Bike Plan, the Franklin Regional Council of Governments (FRCOG) welcomed cyclists to the John W. Olver Transit Center on Tuesday.
With refreshments, giveaways and informational displays, cyclists were able to share their thoughts on biking throughout Franklin County, which will be taken into consideration when the agency releases its Franklin County Regional Bike Plan in October. The previous iteration of the plan was released in 2009.
“We’re looking comprehensively at the region on how we can make it better for cycling and we’re looking for public input on things that would be helpful,” said FRCOG Transportation Program Manager Beth Giannini, noting the plan looks at everything from infrastructure to cycling initiatives.
Transportation Planner Jack Carolan added that FRCOG is “exploring the barriers to cycling.”
The agency also shared a look into some of the data it received in its cycling survey, which recently closed after receiving hundreds of responses. In the survey excerpts, 48.8% of respondents said the biggest issue preventing them from biking more often is they are “uncomfortable biking in the streets with cars.” Other barriers noted by respondents included inclement weather, lack of time to bike and other, general safety concerns.
The Canalside Rail Trail in Turners Falls was by far the most popular bikeway in the county, with more than 60% of respondents indicating they use it. The River Road loop from Deerfield to Sunderland and the Deerfield Upper-Lower roads loop served as the second and third most popular routes. Nearly all survey respondents said they bike for health or recreational purposes.
“People are looking for ways to be healthier and not drive their cars so much,” Giannini added.
While the survey is closed, the public is invited to provide more cycling feedback to FRCOG ahead of the anticipated October release of the Franklin County Regional Bike Plan.
Using the interactive map, folks can highlight specific areas where they have experienced issues or where they would like to see improvements. Areas with a high number of comments include Turners Falls Road in Greenfield, where people are asking for FRCOG to look at how to make the connector between Greenfield and Turners Falls safer, and downtown Greenfield, where people are requesting bike lanes to make the city more bicycle-friendly. Other areas with notes include South Deerfield and near the Sunderland Bridge.
Tuesday’s breakfast served as one of many events celebrating Bay State Bike Month, which is designated by MassBike, a Boston-based nonprofit advocating “statewide for policies that encourage and support community wellness, equity and inclusion, enable sustainable growth, drive economic vitality and tackle climate change.”
Other Bike Month events in the Pioneer Valley include a community bike breakfast at Pulaski Park in Northampton on Wednesday morning, followed by a community ride at Pulaski Park on Thursday, May 16, at 6 p.m. and then a Bike Commuter Happy Hour at The Barb & Olive in Northampton on Friday, May 17, at 6 p.m. Friday also serves as Bike to Work Day.

2024.05.14 17:44 piratebroadcast Shipping process on the refurbished Canyon bikes?

Hi all,
I bought my first proper bike, a refurbished Canyon Grizl 6, last Friday and I am super stoked. My order status still says "Confirmed". After doing some research, it seems that there is a "picked" and a "shipped" status but I am unsure fit hose apply to refurcb bikes.
Anyone have any ideas on what the refurb shipping process is like? I am gone a lot of weekends so I am hoping to figure out how the refurb shipping process works. Its a few days in and no change from Confirmed so thought I'd ask yall.
Thanks!
I am based in Boston if that is relevant.

2024.05.14 15:46 frontierpsychiatric 13 Year Old with rapidly declining health… when to know it’s time?

13 Year Old with rapidly declining health… when to know it’s time?
My dog Soco (13F) has always been a very… independent dog. She always liked pets and attention on her terms, and was always closer to certain members of the family (my sister and brother) over the years, even jumping up on the couch every night to curl up with my brother on “her” spot.
I used to take her on hikes for miles and miles and she still had tons of energy. When I used to go running with her she would be ahead of me the entire time. In fact it was like she HAD to be the head of the pack. When we’d go on walks with my other dog Sammy (12M, boston terrier mix), she would always have to be ahead of him. She would gallop and leap around all the time.
Last year we started to notice her back legs weren’t as strong as they used to be. But still, I’d take her for long walks and she’d be full of energy. She just would have trouble getting up into the back seat of the car (I drive a sedan, so it’s not a big jump).
Within a year however, her health has seriously declined. She can’t even climb the stairs anymore. She can’t jump up on the couch. She basically lives on our main floor and spends most of her time lying in her dog bed that we got her. She’s also become much more aggressive to touch, has trouble seeing, and has had some incontnence issues which are getting more frequent. And her teeth are AWFUL now because we can’t get brush them due to her being more aggressive. She also seems a bit confused sometimes (again, happening more often). She circles around the living room very slowly over and over again before finally lying down in her bed… she can circle for like a half hour at times.
I try to walk her every other day, but our walks are no longer on the hiking trail or bike path, but around our very small block for about 10 or so minutes.
She shows her teeth fairly regularly if you tell her it’s time to eat and if you try to help her up the steps of our stoop from the backyard. It’s 3 steps, but she has fallen off the side and needed help to get back up. And when you try to help her she turns around and snaps at you, often rolling onto her back into a defensive position. Usually it’s just a nip if she does actually get us, but the other day she clamped down onto my hand and broke the skin (barely, but still it’s the first time she’s done what I’d consider an actual bite since she was a puppy).
The thing is… she still has these sparks of energy. In the morning when we come downstairs she’s leaping around. And when we start our walks she’s full of energy again, but then after I’d say a minute she starts slowing down and dragging behind me (something that is not AT ALL like her personality).
And just so you know, she isn’t really aggressive towards our other dog yet and I make sure to keep her far away from other people & dogs when we go on our very short walks (we always have just because like I said… she liked to dictate things on her own terms).
So I guess I’m wondering… is it time to let her go and put her down? Every time I think about euthanizing her the next morning she’s leaping around and seems all happy. But then a week later she’s moving slowly and getting snippy again. I just don’t know what to do. She definitely isn’t the same dog she was the previous 12 years of her life. She used to be so vibrant, the most energetic dog I’ve ever seen. And now she can’t even climb 3 stairs without a chance of falling off the side.

2024.05.14 07:17 Lone_Morde Gastrointestinal Virus Rant

All the kids at the residential facility I work at got sick. Staff refused to hospitalize, or even keep any kids out of school, or even open windows, so 100% of them and about half of staff got it, including me.
14F was cold, but 41F sick was just as cold, and maybe worse. It was last Friday, at 2am when I finally accepted my fate and began getting sick into a plastic bag in my van.
I ran out of bags quickly and felt dysentery coming on so I rushed to planet fitness and pretended I was there to exercise. I got sick 10 times and had other unpleasant symptoms too.
Eventually I was so fatigued and nauseous that I had to roll out a large towel in the handicap bathroom stall and lie down between bouts of getting sick. At other times, I fell asleep with my head on my arm on the public toilet and hoped nobody would notice.
I left PF at 7am feeling like death. I begged my closest friend for help that morning. I told him I would regrettably miss out on mountain biking that day and asked if I could use his bathroom while he was gone. We have a strong friendship and I often watch his place or just hang out when he isn't around. I told him I just needed a safe place to get sick.
I was surprised when he told me no, citing his fear of catching what I have. He's a hypochondriac and caught his first cold in years from me a few weeks prior, so I understand his perspective, but it was heart breaking to see that he was ready to let me shit myself and puke in a bag in a van for 6 hours while I waited for hotel check in. I even offered to only go onside for emergencies. Am I the asshole for expecting he would let me use his restroom while gone?
I spent the rest of the day and all of the next day rotting in a hotel room, married to the toilet. I took a shower and a bath, my first bath in many years. I slept in a bed but slept wrong and trashed my lower back. I watched the Boston Bruins shit themselves as badly as I had earlier that night, and I missed a workshift too after burning $250 on hotel expenses.
Getting sick sucks. Getting sick while homeless is hell. Stay safe out there folks. Avoid alcohol. It trashes our immune systems.

2024.05.13 18:47 Rockabilly_Lily Transit

Hi all, Taking a long weekend to the area and staying at the Hyatt Regency Boston/Cambridge. I was wondering the best ways to get around, closest T stops, or is it just easier to Uber or rent a city bike? Thanks for any help! - L
Edited to add - partner and I were definitely leaning toward Cambridge for some thrifting and Plough and Stars for some dinner and drinks. Other than that, we’re keen to explore, but don’t want to spend our few days walking the equivalent to the Boston Marathon 😁

2024.05.13 16:32 ericd119 Learning Curve

Learning Curve
I splurged and got a Warbird - new to gravel, new to SRAM, new to 1x, new to electronic shifting.
The first few rides were rough - I’m an experienced road cyclist - so I kept trying g to ride the same way. Lots of walking and (maybe some cursing).
The last couple of weekends it had felt better - even more as I learned to laugh at myself as I got splattered with mud. Still not completely comfortable- but that comes with practice.
Definitely not a replacement for my road bike but a really fun complement.
Any tips or tricks - or links to rides / routes in the Boston area are appreciated.
