 | Hi all. New gardener here in southern California zone 9b where we've had much more rainfall than normal this year (nearly doubled from last year). submitted by bree3333 to gardening [link] [comments] I built four raised beds 4x8 and filled them with soil and compost in January. Tested the PH level with a home test kit in February, results were around 6.5. I planted the beds throught March and set up drip irrigation system. I noticed that my butter head lettuce and spinach (the first seeds sown) have not really grown at all in 30 days. The seeds germinated quickly but the plants seem to be stunted and yellowed. I started pulling them yesterday and added compost with the intention of resowing the same seeds. Then I thought to run another home soild test. Results: PH levels are at 8.5. Nitrogen is depleated. Potash sufficient k3 or possibly surplus k4. Phosphorus surplus p4. How can the PH level be so high when I ran a test 6 weeks ago with a good result? I used bottled water in my first test versus distilled water in the second test, could this have impacted the results? Although I have done some reading about nutrient levels in soils, I know little to nothing about fertilizers or how to approach the problem of high PH levels. Nearly all the space in my beds have already been planted. Bed one- (mentioned above) lettuce, spinach, carrots. Bed two broccoli transplants, artichoke, garlic and onion. Bed three- strawberries and various herbs. Bed four- tomato and pepper translants, basil. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading. |

"How calm I feel; how peaceful. As if something inside me--some knot, some tangle of fear and anger and so much more... has finally been untied. All these years: Fleeing Russia, suffocating in America, finding release... finding honor... in the jungle. All these years--and I've never known peace or calm or that elusive thing called happiness. But I feel as if I can know it now. That it's nearby. Just outside perhaps... hidden in the patter of the rain, the drumbeat of the thunder. Peace, calm, happiness. An ending."Sergei Nikolaevich Kravinoff was born a few years before the Russian Revolution, in the early 20th century. His father, a duke to Czar Nicholas, fled to America with his family to avoid execution or imprisonment. Sergei found solace in the honesty of primitive living, of jungle life. As an adult he found his way to Africa and lived there for years, eventually becoming acquainted with a mix of jungle herbs that together formed a potion granting him immunity from age and disease, with a host of superhuman physical attributes. He made his name as a prolific hunter, eventually focusing on Spider-Man as the ultimate specimen, the one he could hang his hat on. This obsession has resonated soundly in Kraven's life, and he killed himself after he defeated Spider-Man.
Soon.
Resurrected by his family, though, he was made unhappy. He had achieved all he wanted in life. Everything afterward was not something he had wanted. Nonetheless his family's unpracticed hand left him unable to die except if he were killed by Spider-Man. Kaine eventually obliged him but then resuscitated him. A while later, Kraven organized a hunt of dozens of animal-themed people, hero and villain, which ended with Kraven allowing his last son to defeat him.

Kelton was very fascinated by the propellers. I tried my damndest to make out what she was saying from the second screenshot on, but it was so loud. This year marked my first foray into the world of Japanese knives. Until recently I had been using a 16cm Wusthof classic and an even smaller(!) robert herder k4, sharpened badly on a ceramic rod.
I had read the subreddit a little bit, but not absorbed the information properly. The hobby was intimidating to a beginner and I held off on buying a knife for a long time. So keep in mind this is a beginner's perspective on the knife.
Until one day I finally bit the bullet.
This knife is my second knife, my first carbon knife, and my favourite knife.
First of all, pics
The album contains pictures of the knife as it is now, with a very stable patina and when it arrived, clean and fresh. It was very reactive at first, browning upon its first interaction with an onion and quickly built up a nice stable patina.
In tandem with me learning about the knife, and how to use it I also learned to sharpen. For reference this knife is sharpened on a Shapton pro 1k, Naniwa Pro 3k and stropped between sessions. I've sharpened it more often than needed as I've been using it to learn, but I find it keeps an edge very well. I got this knife in October, so that's almost three months of everyday use.
I use the knife around twice daily and I cook quite a lot, and often plant based/prep heavy meals.
Initial thoughts: Fit and finish is fantastic on this knife. No sharp edges where they shouldn't be. The handle and box are pretty different and I understand not to a lot of people's tastes - but I quite like it. The knife is rather short, mine coming in at around 42mm. This is not an issue for me as I have smaller hands, but absolutely would be for anyone with larger than "medium" hands. Distal taper is nice, reasonably thin at the tip.
P - Printer paper is no challenge at all. Push cuts fine, no tearing.
N - My sharpening ability is not yet at this level, I can pull cut thinner paper - usually kitchen towel.
O - https://i.imgur.com/QPoD2OP.mp4 Onions pose absolutely no challenge. A fine dice is easy, and if I've done a good job sharpening the horizontal cuts offer little to no resistance. (The resistance in the video is more due to camera nerves).
C - Carrots are also a non-issue. A little wedging is to be expected on larger pieces but absolutely no steering. The thinness of the tip allows for nice controlled cuts for julienning carrots for a fine dice.
H - I've done a few prep heavy meals with the knife and I find no discomfort at the end of it. As long as I stand up straight and let the knife do the work I'm more than comfortable chopping away. No real loss in edge after a long session too - its more gradual over the weeks. Here it is powering through a lasagne prep.
I - I'm pretty gentle on the knife when it comes to impact. I was experiencing microchipping for a wee while but that was due to my sharpening rather than the knife. I did drop it once, which led to a tiny chip at the heel which has now disappeared as I've sharpened the knife over the months.
O - As mentioned above the F&F is fantastic on this knife. Aesthetically its quite particular too, and I really like it. The knife is straight, handle is nice and grippy and it makes me happy every time I use it.
A brief comparison to a Wusthof classic: F&F on the wusthof is poor in comparison. Sharp corners and edges, flat spine, some of the handle scales are not always flush with the tang (I have a big set). Factory edges are inconsistent and a little rough often. The wusthof is much harder to sharpen, takes a while to raise a burr in comparison to the Kagekiyo. However I still get out the wusthof to cross chop herbs, break down squash, butcher chicken. Final thoughts: This was a huge upgrade over my previous knives, but it is not objectively better. It requires wiping down during and after use, careful drying. It is delicate and got chipped from a drop, I had trouble with microchipping and it doesn't particularly like my cheap bamboo board. Since buying it I've spent money on stones, strops, and spent far too much time playing with it. It is a hobby, not just a good knife.
I love this knife. I look forward to using it every day, and I look forward to expanding my collection and giving it a break!

General stuff:
Disclaimer: everything's subject to change
- Basically a completely new tier for many professions across the board, from gathering mats to consumables to new crafted gear (see next few bullet points).
- However, currently, only herbalism, mining, and fishing received new gathering mats (1 each).
- Looking at the consumables, there is a completely new tier of enchants, potions, gems, food. War scrolls, battle flags, drums untouched so far (so consider saving mats for those; dump the rest of the lower tier stuff).
- Enchanting may not get a new mat so it MAY be wise to stock up on dust / shards / crystals
- New reps will probably be required for many new recipe ranks (get / sell those contracts when the patch hits!)
- New notorious combatant gear (ilevel 370) will probably require marks of honor again
- Also stock up on Expulsom if you're gonna make the BoE gear
- Looks like BoP gear is returning, though we don't yet know what the new currency will be as it's currently using a placeholder
Notable Profession-specific changes:
- Again, there are currently three new mats: a new ore, a new herb, and a fish. That means many of the new BS/JC (gems)/ENG, ALCH/INSCRIPTION/COOKING recipes will require them.
- Enchanting: 4 new weapon enchants: force multiplier (str, agi dps), machinist's brilliance (int dps), naga hide (tank), Oceanic restoration (healer)
- Engineering: casting-interrupting and damage consumable, new ub3r spanner modules, blingtron 7000, new wormhole generators, super-charged engine (used for part of the Xiwyllag ATV mount, but now has ranks which is kind of weird, and mat requirements are very low for a mount, could be placeholder)
- Blacksmithing also has a new chassis originally intended to be part of the Xiwyllag ATV mount
- Inscription: new contracts for new reps, new Vantus rune (says NAZJATAR instead of Azshara's Eternal Palace; could it be zone-wide?)
- Alchemy: new potions, completely new tier of Flasks that are a direct upgrade from the previous set
- Jewelcrafting: new gems across the board from epic (primary stat) to rare (secondary stat), probably prospected from the new ore.
- Cooking: new food across the board from secondary stat-boosting ones to a new Feast.
- There will likely be profession-crafted mount equipment but the recipes have yet to be implemented
Other changes
- new expansion (timewalking?) & holiday-themed missions (rewards not yet implemented)
- new pet battle dungeon: Stratholme
- new BoE highborne trinkets: source not yet determined

Let's say you're from a country that's about to hold a Winter Olympiad. You generally do okay in the medal count, but there are a few sports you're not great in. Hockey's one of them. All the best countries in the game will be at your doorstep soon, and for the first time, they'll be bringing professionals; the cream of the crop.
What do you do?
That's the decision the Japanese Ice Hockey Federation had in the mid-1990's, before the 1998 Olympics in Nagano.
Before we get going here, I'd like to explain a sociological concept to you. Don't close this article; I promise you it will be short.
Throughout Asia, dignity and a sense of honour have always been of utmost importance. In English, that strange mix of honour and self-identity has been called, rather simply, 'face'. In many aspects of culture, especially in sports, 'face' is vital. When somebody is embarrassed, they 'lose face'. When somebody redeems themselves, they 'save face'.
There, that's sociology done. Let's talk hockey.
Japan first joined the IIHF in the 1930's, and for many years, they lost face quite often. In fact, the only noteworthy thing Japan did in Olympic hockey was Teiji Honma being the first Olympic goalie to wear a mask in 1936.
The last time Japan played in the Winter Olympics before Nagano was in 1980 – yep, the Miracle on Ice games. Only one player, Canadian-born captain and former NCAA star Herb Wakabayashi, had ever played hockey outside Japan. Herb's brother, Mel, another former college player, coached.
Once the tourney got underway, Herb got hurt in the first game. They tied one game, and lost four, scoring seven goals and giving up 36 of them. They finished dead last. Japan got wiped.
Japan, being the host nation for the 1998 Olympics, were automatically qualified for the Olympic hockey tournament. The kind of weak showing they had in 1980 wasn't going to fly on home soil. Losing face in Japan was simply not acceptable.
The thing was, in the time since 1980, Japanese hockey really hadn't advanced much. Japanese players weren't even making a small impact in the international hockey world. Before the 1998 Games, only two Japanese players had ever been drafted by NHL teams, and one of them wasn't even a real person.
It was time to bring in outside help.
In 1994, the JIHF scored big – they hired Dave King, the former coach of the Calgary Flames, to run the country's national team. That move was huge.
King's coaching resume was impeccable; he coached Team Canada in three Olympic games. He won three World Championship medals, two World Junior medals, and an Olympic silver. He just spent three years behind the Flames' bench, taking a middle-of-the-road team to the playoffs each season.
The JIHF had a big idea to make their team great; take young players with Japanese heritage from more established hockey-playing countries, like Canada, the US, and Sweden, and recruit them for the national team. King started hitting the phones, calling his connections back home and abroad, looking for any hot prospect or solid pro player with Japanese ancestry.
King recruited seven foreign-born players to play for the team; goalie Dusty Imoo and forwards Ryan Fujita, Matt Kabayama, Ryan Kuwabara, Shin Larsson-Yahata, Steve Tsujiura, and Chris Yule.
Each player had their own story; Imoo was a skilled goalie stuck in the minors; Fujita was coming off of a season off the ice after a solid WHL career, Kabayama joined after two seasons off the ice; Kuwabara, a second-round pick of the Habs, was stuck with their AHL team in Fredericton; Larsson-Yahata was coming off an underwhelming season in Quebec; Tsujiura, a late-round pick of the Flyers, was a career minor-leaguer; and Yule, the youngest of the bunch, left a junior A team in Alberta and a shot at a college scholarship behind to join up.
The group was quickly given a name by the media; the “Seven Samurai”, a reference to a classic film by Japanese master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.
In the mid-90's, all seven players moved to Japan, and signed contracts with teams in the Japan Ice Hockey League, a six-team loop with teams like the Seibu Bears Tokyo, Kukudo Bunnies, and the Nippon Paper Cranes. The plan was that the players, after spending a few years in the country, would be granted citizenship, and be able to represent Japan in Nagano.
For the seven, it was a culture shock. The seven were variously acquainted with Japanese culture; Kuwabara, for one, had never been to Japan before and didn't speak Japanese. Nonetheless, they caught on quick, and ran train on the league. Imoo was named the league's MVP in 1995, his first year.

Starting in 1997, they switched up the qualification process for the World Championships; instead of countries from Asia following the promotion/relegation system, they would play for a single, reserved spot in the top division tournament called the Far East Qualifier. The tournament would start in 1999, but for 1998, the top ranked “Far East” team would be sent directly into the top division.
The top-ranked nation in the Far East was Japan. In the course of a couple years, Japan had gone from being in the third-rate tournament to the top.
Meanwhile, hockey hype was building in Japan. In October 1997, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the Vancouver Canucks started the NHL season with two games played at Tokyo's Yoyogi Dome. It was the first time the NHL held regular-season games outside North America. Organizers had to turn people away at the door. The Canucks and the Ducks, led by Japanese-Canadian Paul Kariya, split both games. The games were a success; later games in Japan were planned.
In addition to that, the new venues for hockey were starting to take shape in Nagano. The two main arenas, the 10,000 seat Big Hat arena and the smaller 6,000 seat Aqua Wing arena were fully completed months before the games. While Aqua Wing was planned to be converted into an aquatics centre after the games, Big Hat was purpose-built for hockey.
Everything was suddenly coming up roses for Japanese hockey, but there was still a problem. A big problem. Not all of the Samurai were eligible to play. While Kabayama, Tsujiura, and Yule all received their passports and citizenship papers in December, papers hadn't come in for the other four.
Besides that, there was some controversy with their IIHF eligibility; Imoo and Kabayama had both played in international tournaments for Canada, and whether or not they were clear for the tournament was up in the air.
After looking into the matter, the IIHF ruled that Imoo and Kabayama could play for their adopted homeland, provided their paperwork was in order. That was good news for Kabayama; Imoo was left in limbo. Meanwhile, the team had to weather a big loss; the team's top defenseman, American-born Dan Daikawa, got his papers in time for the Games, but got hurt and wouldn't be ready for Nagano.
In mid-January, a package arrived at JIHF headquarters. Inside were a handful of Japanese passports, and a note that said “Sorry for the delay.”
All the Samurai were in.
A couple days later, the seven stepped on the ice with their new teammates, ready for a series of tune-up games to get them ready for the tournament. A visiting team from Canada had come to Japan for a five-game series. One of the games, in Kobe, ended in a bench-clearing brawl. In a news story from February 1998, Kuwabara was quoted as saying, “I couldn't believe it. It was crazy. I thought I was back in Canada.” The same article described the brawl as “Japanese hockey's defining moment”. The five game series ended with Japan losing two games, but tying two more and winning one. The Games were weeks away, and it looked like things were finally on track.
The Olympics kicked off in Nagano on February 7th. Under the Canadian flag, stars like Wayne Gretzky, Eric Lindros, Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic, and others marched for their country. A little ahead of them, as part of the host delegation that always leads off the opening ceremony, was a ragtag-looking bunch of guys under the Japanese Hinomaru; the Seven Samurai were among them.
The team didn't begin and end with the newcomers, though; some players on the Japanese team had some solid credentials. Taka Koburi, a top defenseman, attended training camp with the Flames, and the first actual Japanese NHL draft pick, Hiroyuki Miura, suited up on the blueline.
The Nagano tournament format had an odd format; instead of a simple round-robin followed by a medal round, teams were split up into several groups, and played in a series of rounds; smaller teams played in the first round, the qualifying round.
Japan was drawn into this round, along with three other teams. The winner of the group would advance to the final round; going from playing guppies to great white sharks. The losers would play another game against each other to see who would finish in 9th, 11th, and 13th.
In a New York Times article about the team, King was quoted as saying, 'This is a huge jump for our team, a colossal jump. This is the third year for the program. We've made strides, but they haven't been that big.'' That article paraphrased King as saying 'that winning a preliminary-round game would be a significant achievement for his team'.
King also gave his new team a nickname; "We call ourselves Team Tiny," King said. "It's impossible for us to high-stick anybody else in hockey." He added, "We scored a goal against Canada, and I distinctly remember seeing this group of our players congratulating each other, and behind, you could see these shoulders and heads of the Canadian players rising above them. It was like a little cluster of flowers under big trees."
Belarus, France, and Germany were drawn into Japan's group. Things didn't start well for the Japanese squad, as they lost to Germany 3-1. The next day, they lost to France 5-2. Imoo played well in the Japanese net, seeing tons of shots each game, but still only had two losses to show for it.
The second loss wiped out their chance of advancing. The Japanese hockey dream, the dream of seeing their team play against the best in the world while proudly sporting the country's red and white, was gone. At most, they'd get to play two more games. Finishing dead last on home ice was a real possibility.
Japan tied the pool's leaders, Belarus, in their final game, 2-2. It was a moral victory. The stage was set; Japan would play in the 13th place game, against the Austrians. If they lost, they'd be in last.
The Austrian team weren't pushovers; they featured an eventual NHL draft pick in net, Reinhard Divis; and two former WHL stars, Gerhard Unterluggauer and Martin Hohenberger.
The two teams played at each other hard. At the end of regulation time, the teams were tied at 3. Overtime solved nothing.
Shootout time.
Eight rounds passed. Each goal was met with another goal. Each save was met with another save. Finally, in the eighth round, Shin Larsson-Yahata, one of the Samurai, was up against Divis.
Larsson-Yahata cut straight down the ice at the goalie. The two got close.
Backhand shot.
The puck fluttered.
Red light. Goal.
Japan won, 4-3. They saved face on home ice.
You may be asking, “Okay, that's...something. Why are you telling me this?” Hear me out.
In 2018, the Winter Olympics will be held in South Korea. Much like Japan's team before Nagano, South Korea's national team right now isn't that hot. South Korea, also like Japan, has taken the route of giving foreign players passports after playing a few seasons in the country, in the hopes they can “save face” against the Canadians, the Americans, Russians, Swedes, etc. They've been bringing in hotshot coaches, like former South Korean-born NHLers Jim Paek and Richard Park, to whip their boys into game shape.
Over the next two years, we're likely going to see some pretty interesting moves, by the Korean Ice Hockey Association, the IIHF, the NHL, the South Korean government, or any other possible actors, to keep South Korea from embarrassing themselves on home ice.
Just like Japan in Nagano, the goal isn't to win. It's to not lose face.
We've seen it work before. Maybe it'll work again.

King also gave his new team a nickname; "We call ourselves Team Tiny," King said. "It's impossible for us to high-stick anybody else in hockey." He added, "We scored a goal against Canada, and I distinctly remember seeing this group of our players congratulating each other, and behind, you could see these shoulders and heads of the Canadian players rising above them. It was like a little cluster of flowers under big trees."
The second loss wiped out their chance of advancing. The Japanese hockey dream, the dream of seeing their team play against the best in the world while proudly sporting the country's red and white, was gone. At most, they'd get to play two more games. Finishing dead last on home ice was a real possibility.
The Austrian team weren't pushovers; they featured an eventual NHL draft pick in net, Reinhard Divis; and two former WHL stars, Gerhard Unterluggauer and Martin Hohenberger.
The two teams played at each other hard. At the end of regulation time, the teams were tied at 3. Overtime solved nothing.
Shootout time.
Eight rounds passed. Each goal was met with another goal. Each save was met with another save. Finally, in the eighth round, Shin Larsson-Yahata, one of the Samurai, was up against Divis.
Larsson-Yahata cut straight down the ice at the goalie. The two got close.
Backhand shot.
The puck fluttered.
Red light. Goal.
Japan won, 4-3. They saved face on home ice.
In 2018, the Winter Olympics will be held in South Korea. Much like Japan's team before Nagano, South Korea's national team right now isn't that hot. South Korea, also like Japan, has taken the route of giving foreign players passports after playing a few seasons in the country, in the hopes they can “save face” against the Canadians, the Americans, Russians, Swedes, etc. They've been bringing in hotshot coaches, like former South Korean-born NHLers Jim Paek and Richard Park, to whip their boys into game shape.
Over the next two years, we're likely going to see some pretty interesting moves, by the Korean Ice Hockey Association, the IIHF, the NHL, the South Korean government, or any other possible actors, to keep South Korea from embarrassing themselves on home ice.
Just like Japan in Nagano, the goal isn't to win. It's to not lose face.
We've seen it work before. Maybe it'll work again.

Nickname: The Commodores
Vanderbilt was named after shipping and railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, known as the Hustler and the Commodore due to his business dealings. He donated $1M to help found a school with the goal of helping bridge the gap between the North and the South after the Civil War, and in return it was named after him. Our sports teams are known as Commodores and our school paper is The Hustler. (No, not that Hustler. Get your mind out of the gutter.) Fun fact: Cornelius never visited the school.
Live Mascot: Mr. C. Mr. C (as in Commodore, for the Vols in the room) is a representation of Cornelius. Yes, we know he looks creepy. Don't mess with Mr. C, kids.
Unofficial Mascot: George the Basset Hound. George was originally just a player's pet, but quickly won over Vandy fans: "George the basset hound, owned by Vandy halfback Toby Wilt whose fine run set up the only touchdown, inspired the Commodores before the opening kickoff. When Ebony Masterpiece, the Tennessee walking horse which has become the university's mascot, pranced up and down the sidelines, George darted across the field and appeared to challenge him in animal jargon." George chased the horse from the field and Vanderbilt won the 1964 game against UT 7-0. After his death in 1966, George would prove to be irreplaceable.

Band: Vanderbilt’s marching band, The Spirit of Gold, is a roughly 200 member organization that performs pregame and halftime routines at all home football games, in addition to playing in the stands. It is one of the largest student organizations on campus. The band is unique in that it is made up of Vanderbilt students from a variety of majors, as well as students from other Nashville colleges and universities, including Belmont, Lipscomb, Trevecca Nazarene, and Volunteer State. This allows students from those schools the opportunity to participate in a collegiate marching band, while also helping to supplement the overall size of the ensemble. The Spirit of Gold is home to one of the largest chapters (Eta Phi) of the coed national band service sorority, Tau Beta Sigma. On gamedays, the Spirit of Gold will parade through campus, as well as greet the players as they enter the stadium through Star Walk. In recent years, the band has had a tendency to get a little rowdy, causing one reporter to equate the group to a drunken circus troupe.
The band also plays at home basketball games, but that’s another subreddit.
Fight Song: Francis Craig, class of 1924, was a successful composer and band leader. The musical director at WSM (famous for the Grand Ole Opry), he wrote "Dynamite" in 1922 while still an undergrad, and it would become our fight song.

With a capacity just under 40,000, Vanderbilt Stadium is 15,000 seats smaller than the next smallest SEC venue (Davis Wade). Undergraduates receive free admission (with student ID) to the student section, first-come-first-serve, until capacity is reached. Visiting SEC teams have a history of outnumbering Commodore faithful, although this may begin to change as the team improves. The school has also begun a series of stadium improvements, adding new lights, a new jumbotron, artificial turf, and raised berm seating in the open end of the horseshoe. The stadium (nestled alongside the baseball field and basketball arena) is within a 5-15 minute walk of all dorms, which results in a different approach to tailgating [discussed below].

Rodgers, Stacy, and Matthews combined to lead one of the most explosive offenses in recent school history, while Wilson, Lohr, and Garnham led a defense that ranked 6th in the country for passing efficiency and 15th for scoring defense. Vandy also developed one of the statistically best special teams, with Spear perfect inside 40 yards and Kent routinely pinning opponents deep in their own territory.

Senior WR Jordan Matthews - Matthews is the core of the team both on and off the field. A member of Kappa Alpha Psi (along with fellow WR Joshua Grady), his work ethic and leadership will likely earn him captain status in the upcoming season. Matthews rose from a two-star recruit to a top SEC playmaker with 94 receptions for 1323 yards and 8 touchdowns last season. He and his tandem, Chris Boyd, are both on the Biletnikoff Award watch list. Coaches have nicknamed them the Biletnikoff twins (the make a great team) and the whole receiving corps is referred to as the "Flyboyz". We are excited that Matthews chose to return for his senior season because he was predicted to be a third round draft pick last year. Here is a video of him being fast as hell and then making a neat one-handed catch. and "jumping" a TE's route against Wake (Matthews was the target).
Senior DB Andre Hal - Hal enters the season with high expectations, being named to the Thorpe, Bednarik, and Nagurski award watch lists. Last year he was second among SEC DBs with 16 passes defended, including three against drafted quarterback Mike Glennon in the Music City Bowl. He had two interceptions in the Tennessee game. He is from Port Allen, LA, and his dialect is fun to listen to.
Senior OT Wesley Johnson - Johnson is on both the Rotary Lombardi and Outland trophy watch lists. He is both versatile and seasoned, having played every OL position over the course of 38 consecutive starts. He has never been called for holding in his career and he did not give up a sack in the 2012 season. Offensive Line Coach Herb Hand is outspoken about Johnson's importance to the team. Johnson has spent most of his time at LT, making him the lineman to watch in the early season matchup with .
Senior DE Walker May - a co-captain in 2012, May tallied 10.5 TFL and 3 sacks. An SEC Defensive Player of the Week, May will be needed to bring game experience to a line trying to replace Johnell Thomas and now-KC Chief Rob Lohr.

Michigan 0, Vanderbilt 0: Fielding Yost brought his 1922 Michigan team to Nashville to play Vanderbilt, coached by his former player, assistant coach, and brother-in-law Dan McGugin. The game marked the dedication of Dudley Field, which was the first stadium in the South to be used solely for college football. It was a defensive struggle, and would turn out to be the only game neither team won that season - Michigan would finish 6-0-1, while Vanderbilt posted an 8-0-1 record. Vanderbilt would go on to be considered the best team in the South and one of the best in the country, allowing only 1.8 ppg.
Vanderbilt defeats #8 Florida in 1974.
Vanderbilt loses to #13 Florida in 2005. A great comeback stifled by a stupid penalty.
Vanderbilt defeats Tennessee in Neyland Stadium, 2005. Game winning TD and game sealing INT Jay Cutler went 27-39 for 315 yards and 3 TDs while Earl Bennett hauled in 14 catches for 167 yards and a TD, which was enough to overcome a 223 yard performance by UT's Arian Foster. First Vanderbilt victory over Tennessee since 1982.
Greatest Plays: There aren't a lot available on youtube, but:
Warren Norman vs. Arkansas, 51 yards: the best example of how a running back at Vanderbilt was able to break Herschel Walker's freshman all-purpose yardage SEC record in 2009. 2009 was Norman's only full season, suffering knee injuries afterward and choosing to end his career earlier this year over health concerns.
Chris Boyd makes Sportscenter for the first time: up 7-6 over rival Tennessee just before halftime, Boyd hauled this pass in right in front of the Vandy student section. One of two Vanderbilt plays to make the Sportscenter top plays for the weekend.

Dan McGugin: 1904-1917, 1919-1934; 197-55-19; 1 losing season, 4 undefeated seasons. While McGugin was a member of Yost's Point-A-Minute teams at Michigan, he made his name as a defensive coach. During his first season at Vanderbilt, his team beat opponents 452-4. He set an NCAA record as the only coach to win his first three games by 60 points, and won his first 11 games by 20 points. The Vanderbilt athletics office was named after McGugin. He was a charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1951, the inaugural year. Journalist Fred Russell [see below] had this to say about McGugin: "For years he ruled supreme in Dixie, and his teams won many glorious intersectional victories. More than any one man, he was responsible for the progress of southern football.... He was the first coach to successfully work the onside kick. He was among the first to bring out guards in the interference.... His name will never die."
Red Sanders: 1940-1942, 1946-1948; 36-22-2. Sanders had a short stay in Nashville, but achieved the second victory over a ranked team (#7 Alabama, 1941) and the first Top 20 ranking in school history. He finished his last season at Vanderbilt with an 8 game single season win streak, which still stands as the second longest in school history. Sanders would then leave Vanderbilt for UCLA, where he would win a National Championship and become famous for his quote on competition: winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.
James Franklin: 2011-Present; 15-11. In late 2010, Vanderbilt lured a young coordinator and head-coach-in-waiting away from Maryland. While Franklin was untested, athletic director David Williams and Chancellor Nick Zeppos saw something they liked. Since then, Franklin has put in major efforts to change the culture of the school and the mindset of students, athletes, and fans. He took a team that was coming off of back-to-back 2-10 seasons and turned them into a bowl eligible team, playing big name teams close and almost knocking off Tennessee in Neyland Stadium in the process. 2012, however, was a year that involved re-writing record books and returning the team to levels last seen in the Sanders and McGugin eras. Perhaps his greatest strength has been in the work he and his assistants have done - most of them came from small programs and were chosen because they didn't have pre-existing prejudices, and they've not only stayed, but done an amazing job at developing the talent they had. DC Bob Shoop, in particular, has turned the Vanderbilt defense into one of the best squads in the SEC, and country, in terms of efficiency and scoring. How long Franklin stays and how far he takes the program remain to be seen, but he has made it clear that this isn't "Same Old Vandy" anymore.
Greatest Rivalries:
This rivalry stretches back to 1892, when Vanderbilt dominated the Leather Era of Football in the South, earning 11 wins before first losing to Tennessee in 1914. They notched 8 more wins before 1926, when Tennessee hired General Robert Neyland and gave him the Prime Directive: "Beat Vanderbilt." That he did, giving rise to the modern Tennessee program while losing to Vanderbilt only three times in the years he coached, before retiring in 1952. Since Neyland's departure in 1952, Vanderbilt has only notched SEVEN wins against the Program from the East, despite playing them every year.
It's hard to understate the hatred that emanates from Vanderbilt fans towards Tennessee, especially the older generations. Parents and grandparents of current Vanderbilt students can't remember a time when the in-state, intraconference archrival wasn't an almost-guaranteed loss on the schedule, and living 365 days a year surrounded by orange and fans stuck in 1998 is enough to drive anyone a little mad. It is a horrible color, isn't it? But there have been two recent victories over Tennessee that give Vanderbilt fans hope: 2005 was the first victory in Neyland Stadium in 30 years (Jay Cutler and Earl Bennett for the win), and last year the Commodores thrashed the Volunteers at home, 41-18. The crowd in this video is enough to give me chills every time.
Ole Miss: [Overall Record: 38-47-2] This rivalry stretches back to November 10, 1894, and it is one the SEC's oldest and most protected rivalries that you've probably never heard of. The first game between the two teams was played on would later be named Currey Field on Vanderbilt's campus, where the Commodores beat the Mississippi Flood 40-0 (no Rebels or Black Bears yet!). These two teams are permanent cross-divisional opponents in the SEC, and they have played every year since 1970. These two schools have the smallest student bodies in the SEC and a reputation for frattiness and different approaches to gameday celebrations.
Vanderbilt has won 6 of the last 8 meetings, which has frustrated Ole Miss fans to no end. Still, this is an understated Gentleman's Rivalry, and the fans on both sides feel like they have a chance to win this game so it's always competitive.
Kentucky: [Overall Record: 40-41-4] A couple of years ago, Kentucky and Vanderbilt would play most every year for the dubious distinction of "penultimate worst team in the conference." The first game was played in 1896, but it wasn't until 1939 that Kentucky first beat Vanderbilt. The two teams have played every year since 1953.
Current Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is 2-0 against the Wildcats, by a combined score of 78-8. While Mark Stoops may be able to turn Kentucky around, for the time being it looks like Franklin has the Wildcats' number.
Wake Forest: [Overall Record: 9-6-0] This has been, in a sense, an arranged marriage between the SEC and ACC; two black-and-gold private institutions with historically mediocre football teams and a reputation for academics. The recent series, played on ACC/SEC rivalrybeatdownweekend, has been relatively even, but there just doesn't seem to be much animosity or even excitement on either side. Still, Wake has been a good match for Vanderbilt, for the time being. Wake's BB&T Field also served as inspiration for Vanderbilt, who used turf from the field to create berm seating in the open end of the horseshoe.
Northwestern: [Overall Record: 1-2-1] Ahh, the Rivalry That Could Have Been. Following a trend of scheduling "academic schools" like Duke, Rice, and Army, this matchup had a lot of promise. The two schools have only played 4 times, and the Wildcats have escaped with wins in the last two years. At the beginning of this year's off-season, Vanderbilt cancelled games with Northwestern and Ohio State with a couple of Dear John letters, due in part to post-expansion conference scheduling and the addition of a four-game home/home with newly FBS UMass. Despite the odd breakup that was Lettergate, both schools' fans seemed to enjoy and wished to continue this rivalry; perhaps as Vanderbilt's program grows more and more consistent in the rough-and-tumble SEC, the game can be reinstated.

If you're staying Downtown near the capital, Varallo's is a neat place. Oldest restaurant in Nashville, famous for their chilli, and good, quick, cheap breakfast. Demos' is also downtown and has really good steak and spaghetti for a very reasonable price.
Dessert: Las Paletas - Mexican style popsicles made from whole fruit - delicious, available at Fido's in the Village or at the main store. Jackson's - fried ice cream, deep fried Twinkies, etc., also in the Village. There are a ton (seriously, like 7 to 10) frozen yogurt places near campus, as well.
GREATEST RESTAURANT IN NASHVILLE: Monell's in Germantown. Amazing, all-you-can-eat Southern food served family style. Great experience. Sunday brunch is a great combo of breakfast and lunch, and Saturday breakfast will leave you absolutely stuffed.
Another Southern food place that's slightly out of the way, near the Gaylord Opryland Hotel: Cock of the Walk has fried chicken and fish, cornbread, etc. and you'll get plenty of food. Celebs sometimes show up there, kind of like a less-well known Loveless.
Plus, there's the more well-known stuff: Loveless (pretty far out, but good food); Stockyard (not worth it, in my opinion - interesting atmosphere but the steaks are better, and possibly even cheaper, at Ruth's Chris), but it is a "Top 10 in the US" type place - warning: no prices on the menus; Prince's Hot Chicken Shack (only go if you like it hot; neighborhood is a little sketchier than the others listed); Pancake Pantry (it's pancakes - people seem to get really excited about this place, not sure why), and there's a huge line during peak breakfast hours; best to go at about 10AM or so midweek); Bluebird Cafe - famous for its live music (I think a replica of it is featured on the show Nashville).
Bars: Patterson House is more expensive and fancier, but they do have things like bacon-infused bourbon, special runs of Four Roses, and good desserts; was listed in GQ's list of top bars in the country. Look for the sign for The Catbird Seat. If you like karaoke, Printer's Alley is the place to go (I usually go to Lonnie's). Lower Broad is the heart of Nashville, with places like Tootsie's, Robert's Western World, and a gazillion hole in the wall honky tonks and piano bars. Just wander around till you find one with a live band playing that you like. There are also the chain places downtown - BB King's, Wildhorse, and Coyote Ugly, and Margaritaville has live music, too. For cheaper, more college-type bars, Demonbreun is the place to go. Tin Roof, Dan McGuinness, and Red Rooster are pretty popular, and the beers should be cheaper.

2012 followed up where 2011 had left off - instead of losing 5 games by a TD or less, the team won three close games and, perhaps even more importantly, learned how to finish out games competitively (sometimes resulting in embarassingly high margins of victory - sorry UK, Presby, and UMass). It was a record breaking season:
In terms of team records, 2013 presents several opportunities: in 2011, Vandy had 0 winning records against SEC teams. This season, Vandy has the chance to build upon its new winning record against Auburn by taking the lead in series against Mizzou and Texas A&M while tying the record with Kentucky. The biggest opportunity, however, will also be the hardest to achieve - if the team has 5 or more wins than losses, the school's overall record will be at .500 or above.

Nickname: The Commodores
Vanderbilt was named after shipping and railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, known as the Hustler and the Commodore due to his business dealings. He donated $1M to help found a school with the goal of helping bridge the gap between the North and the South after the Civil War, and in return it was named after him. Our sports teams are known as Commodores and our school paper is The Hustler. (No, not that Hustler. Get your mind out of the gutter.) Fun fact: Cornelius never visited the school.
Live Mascot: Mr. C. Mr. C (as in Commodore, for the Vols in the room) is a representation of Cornelius. Yes, we know he looks creepy. Don't mess with Mr. C, kids.
Unofficial Mascot: George the Basset Hound. George was originally just a player's pet, but quickly won over Vandy fans: "George the basset hound, owned by Vandy halfback Toby Wilt whose fine run set up the only touchdown, inspired the Commodores before the opening kickoff. When Ebony Masterpiece, the Tennessee walking horse which has become the university's mascot, pranced up and down the sidelines, George darted across the field and appeared to challenge him in animal jargon." George chased the horse from the field and Vanderbilt won the 1964 game against UT 7-0. After his death in 1966, George would prove to be irreplaceable.

Band: Vanderbilt’s marching band, The Spirit of Gold, is a roughly 200 member organization that performs pregame and halftime routines at all home football games, in addition to playing in the stands. It is one of the largest student organizations on campus. The band is unique in that it is made up of Vanderbilt students from a variety of majors, as well as students from other Nashville colleges and universities, including Belmont, Lipscomb, Trevecca Nazarene, and Volunteer State. This allows students from those schools the opportunity to participate in a collegiate marching band, while also helping to supplement the overall size of the ensemble. The Spirit of Gold is home to one of the largest chapters (Eta Phi) of the coed national band service sorority, Tau Beta Sigma. On gamedays, the Spirit of Gold will parade through campus, as well as greet the players as they enter the stadium through Star Walk. In recent years, the band has had a tendency to get a little rowdy, causing one reporter to equate the group to a drunken circus troupe.
The band also plays at home basketball games, but that’s another subreddit.
Fight Song: Francis Craig, class of 1924, was a successful composer and band leader. The musical director at WSM (famous for the Grand Ole Opry), he wrote "Dynamite" in 1922 while still an undergrad, and it would become our fight song.
Stadium: Vanderbilt Stadium at Dudley Field

With a capacity just under 40,000, Vanderbilt Stadium is 15,000 seats smaller than the next smallest SEC venue (Davis Wade). Undergraduates receive free admission (with student ID) to the student section, first-come-first-serve, until capacity is reached. Visiting SEC teams have a history of outnumbering Commodore faithful, although this may begin to change as the team improves. The school has also begun a series of stadium improvements, adding new lights, a new jumbotron, artificial turf, and raised berm seating in the open end of the horseshoe. The stadium (nestled alongside the baseball field and basketball arena) is within a 5-15 minute walk of all dorms, which results in a different approach to tailgating [discussed below].

Rodgers, Stacy, and Matthews combined to lead one of the most explosive offenses in recent school history, while Wilson, Lohr, and Garnham led a defense that ranked 6th in the country for passing efficiency and 15th for scoring defense. Vandy also developed one of the statistically best special teams, with Spear perfect inside 40 yards and Kent routinely pinning opponents deep in their own territory.

Senior WR Jordan Matthews - Matthews is the core of the team both on and off the field. A member of Kappa Alpha Psi (along with fellow WR Joshua Grady), his work ethic and leadership will likely earn him captain status in the upcoming season. Matthews rose from a two-star recruit to a top SEC playmaker with 94 receptions for 1323 yards and 8 touchdowns last season. He and his tandem, Chris Boyd, are both on the Biletnikoff Award watch list. Coaches have nicknamed them the Biletnikoff twins (the make a great team) and the whole receiving corps is referred to as the "Flyboyz". We are excited that Matthews chose to return for his senior season because he was predicted to be a third round draft pick last year. Here is a video of him being fast as hell and then making a neat one-handed catch. and "jumping" a TE's route against Wake (Matthews was the target).
Senior DB Andre Hal - Hal enters the season with high expectations, being named to the Thorpe, Bednarik, and Nagurski award watch lists. Last year he was second among SEC DBs with 16 passes defended, including three against drafted quarterback Mike Glennon in the Music City Bowl. He had two interceptions in the Tennessee game. He is from Port Allen, LA, and his dialect is fun to listen to.
Senior OT Wesley Johnson - Johnson is on both the Rotary Lombardi and Outland trophy watch lists. He is both versatile and seasoned, having played every OL position over the course of 38 consecutive starts. He has never been called for holding in his career and he did not give up a sack in the 2012 season. Offensive Line Coach Herb Hand is outspoken about Johnson's importance to the team. Johnson has spent most of his time at LT, making him the lineman to watch in the early season matchup with .
Senior DE Walker May - a co-captain in 2012, May tallied 10.5 TFL and 3 sacks. An SEC Defensive Player of the Week, May will be needed to bring game experience to a line trying to replace Johnell Thomas and now-KC Chief Rob Lohr.

Michigan 0, Vanderbilt 0: Fielding Yost brought his 1922 Michigan team to Nashville to play Vanderbilt, coached by his former player, assistant coach, and brother-in-law Dan McGugin. The game marked the dedication of Dudley Field, which was the first stadium in the South to be used solely for college football. It was a defensive struggle, and would turn out to be the only game neither team won that season - Michigan would finish 6-0-1, while Vanderbilt posted an 8-0-1 record. Vanderbilt would go on to be considered the best team in the South and one of the best in the country, allowing only 1.8 ppg.

Game winning TD and game sealing INT Jay Cutler went 27-39 for 315 yards and 3 TDs while Earl Bennett hauled in 14 catches for 167 yards and a TD, which was enough to overcome a 223 yard performance by UT's Arian Foster. First Vanderbilt victory over Tennessee since 1982.

Warren Norman vs. Arkansas, 51 yards: the best example of how a running back at Vanderbilt was able to break Herschel Walker's freshman all-purpose yardage SEC record in 2009. 2009 was Norman's only full season, suffering knee injuries afterward and choosing to end his career earlier this year over health concerns.
Chris Boyd makes Sportscenter for the first time: up 7-6 over rival Tennessee just before halftime, Boyd hauled this pass in right in front of the Vandy student section. One of two Vanderbilt plays to make the Sportscenter top plays for the weekend.

Dan McGugin: 1904-1917, 1919-1934; 197-55-19; 1 losing season, 4 undefeated seasons. While McGugin was a member of Yost's Point-A-Minute teams at Michigan, he made his name as a defensive coach. During his first season at Vanderbilt, his team beat opponents 452-4. He set an NCAA record as the only coach to win his first three games by 60 points, and won his first 11 games by 20 points. The Vanderbilt athletics office was named after McGugin. He was a charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1951, the inaugural year. Journalist Fred Russell [see below] had this to say about McGugin: "For years he ruled supreme in Dixie, and his teams won many glorious intersectional victories. More than any one man, he was responsible for the progress of southern football.... He was the first coach to successfully work the onside kick. He was among the first to bring out guards in the interference.... His name will never die."
Red Sanders: 1940-1942, 1946-1948; 36-22-2. Sanders had a short stay in Nashville, but achieved the second victory over a ranked team (#7 Alabama, 1941) and the first Top 20 ranking in school history. He finished his last season at Vanderbilt with an 8 game single season win streak, which still stands as the second longest in school history. Sanders would then leave Vanderbilt for UCLA, where he would win a National Championship and become famous for his quote on competition: winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.
James Franklin: 2011-Present; 15-11. In late 2010, Vanderbilt lured a young coordinator and head-coach-in-waiting away from Maryland. While Franklin was untested, athletic director David Williams and Chancellor Nick Zeppos saw something they liked. Since then, Franklin has put in major efforts to change the culture of the school and the mindset of students, athletes, and fans. He took a team that was coming off of back-to-back 2-10 seasons and turned them into a bowl eligible team, playing big name teams close and almost knocking off Tennessee in Neyland Stadium in the process. 2012, however, was a year that involved re-writing record books and returning the team to levels last seen in the Sanders and McGugin eras. Perhaps his greatest strength has been in the work he and his assistants have done - most of them came from small programs and were chosen because they didn't have pre-existing prejudices, and they've not only stayed, but done an amazing job at developing the talent they had. DC Bob Shoop, in particular, has turned the Vanderbilt defense into one of the best squads in the SEC, and country, in terms of efficiency and scoring. How long Franklin stays and how far he takes the program remain to be seen, but he has made it clear that this isn't "Same Old Vandy" anymore.

Tennessee: [Overall Record: 29-73-5] To put another team here, despite how lopsided the overall record suggests this rivalry is, would just be wrong. Sacrilegious. Scandalous. Downright perverse.This rivalry stretches back to 1892, when Vanderbilt dominated the Leather Era of Football in the South, earning 11 wins before first losing to Tennessee in 1914. They notched 8 more wins before 1926, when Tennessee hired General Robert Neyland and gave him the Prime Directive: "Beat Vanderbilt." That he did, giving rise to the modern Tennessee program while losing to Vanderbilt only three times in the years he coached, before retiring in 1952. Since Neyland's departure in 1952, Vanderbilt has only notched SEVEN wins against the Program from the East, despite playing them every year.
It's hard to understate the hatred that emanates from Vanderbilt fans towards Tennessee, especially the older generations. Parents and grandparents of current Vanderbilt students can't remember a time when the in-state, intraconference archrival wasn't an almost-guaranteed loss on the schedule, and living 365 days a year surrounded by orange and fans stuck in 1998 is enough to drive anyone a little mad. It is a horrible color, isn't it? But there have been two recent victories over Tennessee that give Vanderbilt fans hope: 2005 was the first victory in Neyland Stadium in 30 years (Jay Cutler and Earl Bennett for the win), and last year the Commodores thrashed the Volunteers at home, 41-18. The crowd in this video is enough to give me chills every time.
Ole Miss: [Overall Record: 38-47-2] This rivalry stretches back to November 10, 1894, and it is one the SEC's oldest and most protected rivalries that you've probably never heard of. The first game between the two teams was played on would later be named Currey Field on Vanderbilt's campus, where the Commodores beat the Mississippi Flood 40-0 (no Rebels or Black Bears yet!). These two teams are permanent cross-divisional opponents in the SEC, and they have played every year since 1970. These two schools have the smallest student bodies in the SEC and a reputation for frattiness and different approaches to gameday celebrations.
Vanderbilt has won 6 of the last 8 meetings, which has frustrated Ole Miss fans to no end. Still, this is an understated Gentleman's Rivalry, and the fans on both sides feel like they have a chance to win this game so it's always competitive.
Kentucky: [Overall Record: 40-41-4] A couple of years ago, Kentucky and Vanderbilt would play most every year for the dubious distinction of "penultimate worst team in the conference." The first game was played in 1896, but it wasn't until 1939 that Kentucky first beat Vanderbilt. The two teams have played every year since 1953.
Current Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is 2-0 against the Wildcats, by a combined score of 78-8. While Mark Stoops may be able to turn Kentucky around, for the time being it looks like Franklin has the Wildcats' number.
Wake Forest: [Overall Record: 9-6-0] This has been, in a sense, an arranged marriage between the SEC and ACC; two black-and-gold private institutions with historically mediocre football teams and a reputation for academics. The recent series, played on ACC/SEC rivalry
Northwestern: [Overall Record: 1-2-1] Ahh, the Rivalry That Could Have Been. Following a trend of scheduling "academic schools" like Duke, Rice, and Army, this matchup had a lot of promise. The two schools have only played 4 times, and the Wildcats have escaped with wins in the last two years. At the beginning of this year's off-season, Vanderbilt cancelled games with Northwestern and Ohio State with a couple of Dear John letters, due in part to post-expansion conference scheduling and the addition of a four-game home/home with newly FBS UMass. Despite the odd breakup that was Lettergate, both schools' fans seemed to enjoy and wished to continue this rivalry; perhaps as Vanderbilt's program grows more and more consistent in the rough-and-tumble SEC, the game can be reinstated.
- The Anchor: Vanderbilt football began using the anchor as a symbol of strength and support in 2004 under Head Coach Bobby Johnson, who wanted the anchor to symbolize unity and strength throughout the program. The anchor is also taken to all road games.
- The Admiral: The naval horn has resided atop the pressbox of Vanderbilt Stadium since 1993. It is used to remind fans of upcoming pre-game activities as well as being sounded when the football team takes the field and after every Commodore score. Since its inception, the honor of sounding the horn has always been the responsibility of Vanderbilt's Navy ROTC. The horn also sounds after road victories to let those on campus know that Vanderbilt has won.
- Victory Flag: Following each football team victory, a solid black flag with the Vanderbilt Athletic mark is hoisted above the west side of Vanderbilt Stadium, where it remains for seven days. This tradition began in 2004. Students and fans alike know to look for the Victory Flag after every conquest.
- The Star Walk: The Star Walk tradition began in the 1990s after athletic department officials had stars, representing the athletic logo, painted on the sidewalk and Jess Neely Drive from the football team's locker room facility in McGugin Center down the tunnel leading into Vanderbilt Stadium. The team's walk to its stadium locker facility was quickly dubbed Star Walk in reference to the star logos painted along the route. Over the years, it has grown in interest through participation by the marching band and better communication with the fans. The best attended Star Walks have flooded Jess Neely Drive with Commodore faithful hoping to see and encourage their favorite player or coach.
- Alma Mater: following home games, players gather at the edge of the field nearest the student section. The band then plays the alma mater, pausing for the line "conquer and prevail" to be shouted, while students, players, alumni, and fans lock arms and sing along.
- "Tailgating:" Since ~90% of students live on campus all four years (when major dorm renovation projects aren't on-going), Vanderbilt students don't participate in normal SEC-style tailgating. Instead, they dress in their frattiest attire and make their way towards the stadium early on gameday, but stop for a few hours at their fraternity of choice. Once there, they proceed to rage until gametime. Things can get a little rowdy. Traditionally, these parties have continued until halftime, before inebriated students staggered across the street to the stadium to see the final touches put on another Vandy loss. The fraternities now shut down a half hour before kick-off, at Coach Franklin's request. He had more success controlling the festivities than some "missionaries" who tried it.
- Running onto the field: every year, the incoming freshman class gathers for a special ("alcohol-free") tailgate before the first home game and then proceeds to run onto the field, led by the chancellor.
- The Commodore Creed: posted in the locker room and a key aspect of our team culture.
- VU hand sign: while this hand sign was popular under previous coaches, it has now come into its own as a simple reminder of school pride. Coach Franklin has incorporated it into his "Six Seconds" philosophy - worry about the present and focus on giving 100% for the next six seconds (the average length of one play). Fans and players alike now raise the VU with both hands, six fingers denoting the six seconds.
- Undefeated each week: the team begins each Sunday 0-0, focusing on the opponent they play that week in an attempt to go 1-0 before starting back with a clean slate the next day. While some journalists have been frustrated by the team's unwillingness to discuss the season's record or refusal to look ahead to future games, the tone has been set: prepare for your opponent, win, celebrate for a few hours, and then get back to work.

- Vanderbilt currently holds winning records against teams like: Penn State, Clemson, Texas, Maryland, and Purdue.
- CFB coaches Watson and Mack Brown both attended Vanderbilt, and Watson would later return as head coach. He isn't as good as his brother. Mack only stayed for a short period of time before transferring to Florida State. Like Mack, model Molly Sims also studied at Vanderbilt for a short time before leaving for career reasons. Those aren't really related, I was just looking for an excuse.
- While Vanderbilt does not offer a journalism major, it has developed a reputation for sports journalism. Grantland Rice, the Dean of American Sportswriters and possibly the greatest American sportswriter, was a Vanderbilt alumnus. Many others have followed in his (giant) footsteps: protege Fred Russell, ESPN writer Buster Olney, Dave Sheinin at The Washington Post, SI's Mark Bechtel and Lee Jenkins, and Tyler Kepner of the NYT, and others. If you've never heard of any of these people, maybe you've heard of The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame, the blog Grantland, or this line: "For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name— He marks—not that you won or lost—but how you played the game."
