2024.04.07 16:26 xoanjali Challenge Nine: Aphrodite’s Gala

Challenge Nine: Aphrodite’s Gala
Welcome back to the Temple of Divines, my exceptional top five! I’m sure you can all taste the crown and title of Deity Supreme - and the finale has never been closer! Let’s get into the prompt…

  • Challenge: Aphrodite’s Gala
    • Focus: Aesthetic & Cohesion

Prompt:
We’ve judged your storytelling, we’ve judged your creativity, we’ve judged you in pairs, we’ve even judged your ability to write - but now it’s all come down to your looks and ability to create a collective vision! For this challenge we are hosting Aphrodite’s Gala - a three look ball!
Like I stated earlier, this challenge is all about your looks as a collective! You should not have to write an explanation for any of your looks so that the panel understands - we should be able to clearly and concisely understand what you are selling solely on the looks themselves. While we are still asking you to write descriptions of your looks we should not see comments such as “I chose this shoe/wig/dress/top/bottom so that xyz showed through in my look” - you should not have to provide a reasoning for your choices.
For this challenge you are tasked with creating three looks;
  1. The Pythia: Pythia was the name of the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. She specifically served as its oracle and was known as the Oracle of Delphi. You must create your own version of ‘Pythia’ for a god or goddess of your choosing.
  2. The Titan: The Titans were the pre-Olympian gods who ruled the cosmos in ancient Greek mythology before the Titanomachy War. For this look you are tasked with creating your own Titan - what are you the Titan of? Which cosmos do you rule? Are you benevolent or malevolent? This look should transcend divinity! This should not be your average run of the mill ‘goddess’ look.
  3. The Nymph: In Greek mythology, a nymph is any member of a large class of female nature spirits, sometimes bound to a particular location or landform. They are often sought after by lustful satyrs. This look should draw inspiration from the different elements, incorporate lustfulness/seductiveness, and put extra emphasis on youth and beauty.

Challenge Rules:
  • You are not allowed to resubmit for this challenge! Stasha, if you wish to use your vial of Anjali’s Ambrosia, you must message me before the submission window closes.
  • All submissions must be turned in Tuesday, April 9th by 12:00 PM EST.
  • You are allowed to recolor two pieces of your look though you may not recolor your skin or your top. This means you are allowed to recolor two pieces in each look, totaling six pieces.
  • If you wish to hoard pieces, please comment a list of which items at which levels you’ll be using them. If this list changes, please update your comment quickly!
  • Along with your main submission (s) please submit a look for this challenge’s looksync to ‘Saturn’ by SZA. As a formality, you are all required to submit a look.

Oh…and one more thing! If you are not in the top this week, you are in the bottom. We’re down to our final five queens and there is no room for a safe placement - especially given the quality of submissions we’ve received. Now is the time to step on the gas and claim your spot (s) in the finale!
As always, much love and stay blessed 👑☁️☀️

Previous Next First

---Lifeboat---

I look at the planet, below, through the Bridge’s front window, which forms the ‘eyes’ on the ‘head’ of the ship.
Victor stands at my side, his arms folded, his brow furrowed in consideration.
On my other side stands Twila’s projected form, using the window to display photographs and other visual aids, as she explains “The ship was called the UTCS Leonidas. It was wrecked, in the Battle of Takynv, around 2 and a half years into the War. All hands were thought lost, since the ship itself was reduced to a fine debris cloud without sufficient time to evacuate. However, it seems that, before the ship was destroyed, the AI, named Atlantiades, had just enough time to evacuate a handful of personnel, already located nearby to the lifeboats, along with a copy of themselves, before ejecting and making their way to the nearest Terran survivable planet… This one.”
Mimicking the upward flicking hand gesture that a biological would use, she brings up twelve photos along with names and ranks.
“These twelve are the ones the AI indicates they were able to get on the lifeboat with them…” five of the pictures are defaced by blue Xs “…the landing was uncontrolled and these five didn’t survive it, the other seven managed to repair themselves with the onboard first aid equipment but this one…” one more blue X appears “…is reported killed in the first year and this one…” another blue X “…died after 4 years… All deceased personnel are recorded as being interred beside the wrecked vessel. 10 years after landing is when the onboard power generation failed and the AI was forced into hibernation. So, these five; PO Thaleia Theodoropoulou of the UTC Navy, Seaman Ilir Boshnjaku of the UTC Navy, Maj Artemas Leandros of the UTC Marines, Cpl Nemir Bulut of the UTC Marines and Dr Dimitris “Demeter” Markopoulos of the Humanitarian Corps., are unaccounted for. We know they were alive as of 23 years ago… but that’s a long time we don’t have information for…”
Victor considers this before asking “What can you tell us about the system? About the planet?”
Twila dismisses the information from the screen, replacing it with the information Victor has just requested.
“Not much, I’m afraid… it’s a temperate Class 11.8. The star has a few different names, in a few different languages of species whose skies it’s visible in, but the planet has never been named, just given an alphanumeric designation, the nearest inhabited world, where the battle was fought, is 237.1 lightyears, in that direction…” she points to what, I’m sure, must be its precise point in space relative to us “…nearest thing of any note is the lane we just came from, 33 lightyears behind us, the last visit to the system, recorded by the in-system GU buoy, was an 8.4 hour long, degaussing stop, made 1,178 years ago (which is surprisingly recent for a deathworld system to have been visited by anyone except the UTC)!… Oh, and… here are some pictures of local fauna graciously included by my fellow AI!”
Victor takes a moment to inspect the photos before sarcastically declaring “Oh, great(!) I always wanted to die at the teeth of shaggy, plum coloured t. rexes(!)”
“I have not authorised you to go down at all yet, Victor… If I do, you are certainly not authorised to die(!)”
He chuckles… but I can also see a mild look of concern pass over his face at the implication that he might not be sent down.
I turn to Twila “Twila, what are my legal responsibilities with regards to this signal?”
“None, Captain… Well you do have the responsibility to make the ODR or UTCM aware of the location of Wartime remains and the Wartime AI, if you don’t retrieve them yourself. In that case, the UTCM would send out a dedicated team to retrieve them. It’s been so long since the last record of the survivors that you have no obligation to attempt to mount a rescue. Though, likewise, you have a responsibility to make the ODR or UTCM aware of unresolved evidence of survivors. I’ve already added alerting them to my list of pending tasks. You could simply say the word and we could be on our way.”
I nod, considering for some moments, before asking “And, if I chose, would I be permitted to order a retrieval of the AI and remains?”
“You would, Captain.” confirms Twila.
“And attempting a rescue of any potential survivors?” I ask.
“That’s also permitted, Captain.”
“*Hmmm*, *hmmm*…” I say, mulling over what she’s told me.
I consider asking Victor his opinion but, from how he spoke and the look on his face a moment ago, I think it’s a fairly safe conclusion that he thinks attempting a rescue and recovery is the obvious course of action.
“Victor, I would like to attempt to bring those people home, living and dead… Can I ask you to help me in that?”
He grins “Course, Cap! Bringin people homes almost exactly my job!”
---Victor’s perspective---
I walk through Triple M, to the room that my guns are locked up in.
I enter to see Tuun, Samus, Thran, Xon, Tymancha, Leon, Ziva and Steve all standing ready.
I look at the love of my life and, grimacing at what I’ve obviously got to do, say “Baby, I cant let you come down!”
She looks at me like I’ve just backhanded her, full across the face!
Her mouth falls open, revealing the tips of her long canines.
She stares at me dumbstruck for a few moments, seeming to be waiting for me to say I was joking or something.
Eventually she manages “You don’t think I can…?”
“It’s nothin’ to do with your capabilities, Tuun…” I interrupt, earnestly “…It’s to do with what the mission is… If there’s anyone alive down there, they’ve been there since the War!… I know Don never fought for the GU but they prob’ly won’t!… They may not give you the opportunity to explain things to ’em!… War veterans who’ve spent the last three decades as castaways aint the kinda people you wanna fuck around and find out with!… For those reasons, you aint coming on the expedition.”
She just looks at me like I’ve ripped her heart out of her chest and crushed it in my hand before violently hurling it to the floor… but she seems not to be able to fault my reasoning.
Wordlessly, she storms past me, leaving the room.
I really regret having to risk playing into her insecurities but… leaving her up here is definitely the right choice… I’d prefer her upset and alive to satisfied and dead!
I look at the group, their faces giving me various mixes of sympathy, concern and, in the cases of Tymancha, Leon and Ziva, seeming indifference.
Then I realise something.
“Anyone here know anything about preWar or Wartime tech?” I ask.
Tentatively, everyone except Thran and Tymancha puts their hand up.
“Anyone reckon they can remove the parts of a Wartime lifeboat that an AI would’ve transferred themselves onto?” I add.
Everyone’s hand goes down.
“Does anyone reckon they could identify those parts?” I ask, not sure exactly what I’m hoping for.
No one’s hand goes up.
Fuck, this is really going to rub salt in the wound when Tuun finds out but “Samus, get Mouse… tell her she’s needed.”
---later---
The ground team make our way through the shuttle bay.
Mouse looks very out of place being surrounded by the eight of us, all wearing some mixture of durasteel, conventional metals, skin-hugging utility clothing (except Tymancha in his leathers and Steve in his khakis) and all being armed.
Her tool box, a stretcher and a dozen hermetic containers (each bearing a label for us to write names on) along with digging tools are following behind, strapped to a hovertrolley. The chances of all twelve of those boxes getting filled are not great. The last person to die won’t have had anyone to bury them and their remains will almost certainly have been scattered to the four winds… just in case, though.
We board the shuttle and take our seats.
The hovertrolley follows us in, physically locking itself in place, on the floor, just for if there’s a failure of the grav plating. That addition was my suggestion, which I managed to convince Cap of by demonstrating on a watermelon what happens when loose, hard, flying objects strike organic matter!
“Twila?”
“Yes, CSS Taylor?”
“Am I right in thinkin’ that the operational language of the Leonidas was Greek?” I ask.
“That is correct.” she states, professionally.
I think before asking “And is Greek the mother tongue of all five of the possible survivors?”
“No: Boshnjaku’s mother tongue would be Albanian and Bulut’s Turkish.”
I mull that over.
On the one hand, I know there’s a language everyone we’re looking for will speak. On the other, there are two people who might have gone 23 years without speaking it…
I decide “Alright, Twila… take us down. Once you’ve dropped us off at the crashsite, I want you to circle, at a distance of 5km out from that location, at an altitude of 1km, and give the following announcement, first in Greek, followed by a high pitched, alert tone, then Albanian, followed by another tone, then Turkish before cycling back to Greek; ‘Survivor’s of the UTCS Leonidas, we are here to recover you, if you are able, please rendezvous at the lifeboat you arrived on. If you are not, please do as much as you possibly can to flag your location to us. This message will repeat in X seconds.’ Can you do that for me, Twila.”
“Certainly, CSS.” she answers before sealing the door and jettisoning from the Bright Plume.
I’m able to see out of the window as the flamboyantly technicolour planet seems like it’s rushing towards us.
We level out as we approach, flying over multicoloured forests mixed with wide flat plains where giant dinosauroid fauna, all covered in flashy, shaggy fur, graze.
I see a plateau, looming over the forest in front of us that reminds me of the Maiden Castle earthwork. Though, unlike Maiden Castle, this one’s clearly natural.
Perched on top of the landform, I see the harsh, angular lines of a small ship, even if the metal underneath has been covered by 33 years of native lichen and moss analogues.
Behind the craft is the, still visible, impact scar, beside it is a small collection of stone cairns.
My heart sinks as I count them.
“Eleven graves…” announces Xon, as we come in to land, clearly having gone through the same train of thought as I just did “…maximum of one survivor.”

2022.10.11 18:28 Fabianzzz Is the transflormation of Orkhis an actual Greek myth?

In Greek mythology, Orchis was the son of a nymph (a female nature deity typically associated with a particular location or landform) and a satyr (a rustic fertility spirits of the countryside and wilds).
During a celebratory feast for Dionysus, Orchis committed the sacrilege of attempting to rape a priestess.
His punishment was to being torn apart by wild beasts. From his death arose Orchids which are a testament to the male reproductive organs (the testis). Today, the orchid means refinement as well as beauty. The origin of the plant name comes from the word orkhis, a word to describe part of the male genitalia, because of the shape of the bulbous roots.
The above I found here, however I have never been able to find a source for this. Is anyone aware of an original source? If it's not from Greek antiquity, any idea on when/where this comes from?

2022.04.28 01:10 _Boodstain_ Some Faction Ideas/Locations For Bannerlord

So Bannerlord has a massive map like Warband but it feels incomplete. Like if civilization has existed and continues to expand why does the south, east, and west feel like it has empty land. (The river to the south, the plains to the east, and the isles to the west.) I want to throw some ideas out there and see if anyone likes them or if any devs see and have their thoughts on them as I feel like more factions would be incredibly amazing to the enrichment of the already great lore and history of the game. (To include them or add them the lore can just say that they never involved themselves with the old Calradian Empire but were apart of the local history, and now that the civil war has erupted and old factions emerge, they have come out to test the strength of these old Empires and Kingdoms.)
Kingdom of Ionia:(Made up of the Western Islands)
The name of this kingdom is a reference to the Ionian sea or the sea in between the many Greek Islands and Isles.
This "kingdom" would act as a confederation of city states, lords, kings, and republics which unite under a common leader when the independence of the Islands of Ionia are under threat of Invasion. Each Island will get it's own city with coastal villages and will be included after naval and ship warfare are introduced to Bannerlord.
Armys/Navy: The Ionians are defined by the sea. They will have the largest navy at the beginning of the game and have the best ships, Tiremes (Triremes being the largest ships with 3 rows or rowers below deck.) they get the option of 2 ship types, being assault ships and skirmisher ships. With their armys comprising of Heavy Infantry "Hoplites" which are similar to the modern day hoplites but suffer from low armor below the waist and low morale save except for the "Sparti" Hoplites which will be the best and most tanky Spear-Infantry in the game.
Navy:
Assault ships will be made of of Ionian Marines, carrying short spears and short swords with large roundshields their aim is to ram enemy ships and have their Infantry board the enemy ship (Unless they split the enemy ship in half ramming.) They wear Spartan/Hoplite like helmets and attire and are particularly tanky with high armor but are vulnerable at the thighs and upper arms.
Skirmishers comprise of harpooners on top of a lightefaster Bireme (A ship with 2 rows of rowers) this ship is fast and nimble with their harpooners wearing light infantry tunics and launching harpoons at the enemy. Should they be boarded they will brandish a shortsword and/or Tridant depending on distance however they are about as armored and weak as archers in melee combat.
Army: The Ionian army are comprised of lightly armored Javolineers, "Creato" Archers and Hoplites.
Hoplites: These units will be heavily armored above the thigh but due to their attire they will be exposed at the upper arm and thighs. They wield large bronze roundshields and leaf spears with short swords for backups when the enemy breaks through.
Javolineers: These units are the lightest armored in the game but wield 3 stacks of 10 Javs and have the fastest running speed in the game. Allowing them to quickly hit and run against enemy armies or using their superior mobility to outmaneuver an enemy being held in place by the Hoplite lines.
"Creato" Archers: (Names after Creatian archers which was considered the greatest archers in the ancient world) these archers are lightly armored archers who have the greatest range in the game, however they are considerably less accurate than Fians and do only 2/3 the damage at their max distance, with their power scaling based on distance.
Ionia will be a kingdom plagued by internal issues as they cannot be easily invaded, yet civil wars are more easily to erupt. Choosing an Ionian culture as your characters will grant you a 25% speed boost and less food consumption when moving with a navy/in water. But grant your armies a 10% slower movement speed across all landforms.
The Kingdom of Aegyptus: (Along the river to the South)
Named after how Homer refers to Egypt as in the Odyssey, Aegyptus is ruled by the Pharaoh who serves as the divine head of religion and head of state, a living god. They will be introduced with the religion and chariot expansion. Of which will add religions which increase influence based on each lord (And city) which follow that religion and chariots which act as highly tanky shock cav and/or skirmisher cav.
They will be located along the river to the south of the Asrai, what they refer to as the Niale. (The Nile) Which is the heart of their lives with all of their major cities running along it. They will follow the Pharaohs commands as if they were from a god and take issue with any not following their religion.
Their army will comprise mostly of mass Infantry backed by hard hitting cav/chariots to make them terrifying on open plains but easy in forests and/or sieges. And their navy being fast and mobile.
Army:
(All Chariots take up 5 Unit spaces for balancing purposes.)
Chariot Riders: These are the large bulky chariots who hit like literal trucks. Having the hardest hitting charge damage of any unit spears are the only effective way of stopping them or to slow them down by surrounding.
Chariot Skirmishers: These chariots are lighter and skinnier with one of the two riders firing a longbow which does devastating damage to single targets and can fire in a 360 degree angle thanks to not having to face in any single direction as when on horseback.
Slave Infantry: Unbelievers armed with short swords and light armor; they have low morale but only take up .5 of the space as any other unit allowing mass spamming of this cannon fodder-unit.
Pharoah's Gaurds: These units are the heaviest in the game, with all being at the max height and strength for units, however being vulnerable to blunt damage and cavalry charges. They carry massive tower shields and are armed with both a 1 handed Khopesh and a 2 handed Khopesh depending on what is needed.
Aegyptian Bowmen: These short-bows have short range but high piercing damage and high accuracy making them perfect for hiding behind massive lines of Infantry or Bulky lines to pepper down the enemy's numbers through them.
Navy:
Eye of Horus: This ship is the lightest and most shallow boarding ship, this makes them vulnerable to damage but the fastest ships on rivers and any shallow water, easily able to take advantage of rivers and lakes.
Anhur's Arrows: This ship is armed with dangerous Aegyptian short bowmen who can pepper down other ships from long short distances with accurate fire.
Choosing Aegyptian as your starting culture grants you a +1 Influence on every city/noble/companion that is in your clan/in your clan's possession monthly. And granting you a +10 movement speed on rivers. With a -10% weekly relationship decrease to all others who don't follow your religion and a -10% speed in forests.
The Qin Empire: (Beyond the Eastern Mountains)
Based off of the Chinese Qin Dynasty this faction is about defense and numbers. Their walls are much higher than other factions and they have built a great wall to prevent the Khuzait from entering their homeland in which a grand fort-city stands as the gate that must be taken to attack them directly, otherwise having to go around. They are masters of seigecraft and will be introcuded when artillery/mobile siegeweapons are introduced. (Ballista's being recruitable costing 10 unit spaces, Onogars being 15, etc.) With their own unique artillery piece the Hwacha.
Their nation will work with a imperial system where lords are ranked into 3 positions, Emperor, Highlords, and Lowlords. With the higher they are gaining massive bonuses to government, army size, and unit morale, quality, and recruitment. With the highest rank being achivable being Highlord unless you directly rebel and overthrow the Emperor, Low lords gaining -10% to taxes, soldier exp, tribute gain, and influence gain. Highlords gaining +10% to taxes, soldier exp, tribute gain, and influence gain. And Emperor receiving +25% to taxes, soldier exp, tribute gain, influence gain, and settlement loyalty.
The Qin Army is backed by large numbers of foot troops, medium armored with relatively large square-shields, heavy Glave wielding cavalry, and a backline of Hwacha's and artillery and their navy having thick, stocky warships.
Army:
Qin Warriors: These warriors are the main force of the Qin army, carrying a Jian straight sword (Jian being what Chinese double edged straight swords are classified as), a short spear and a wooden square shield, with medium armor.
Qin Dynasty Warriors: These warriors are guardians of the Emperor and wield massive Pole-Blades (Much like Glaves but the blade being longer), one handed Dao curved swords (Dao being what Chinese curved single edged swords were classified as.) and ride on armored horses. They are a melee cavalry who want to charge and then get stuck in for a long fight.
Qin Crossbowmen: These crossbow men have the fastest reload and aiming time of any crossbows, although they are still slower than archers they pack a punch for less range than other crossbowmen.
Hwachas: These are large artillery pieces which cost 20 Units per Hwacha but carry 100 arrows for a single AOE ranged attack much like the Onogar but more precise. Able to tear apart any line or column of Infantry these replace Onogars for the Qin giving them less damage against structures but more effective against units. They can be reloaded when used defensively on sieges but their reload time takes 3:00 during sieges so shoot carefully.
Navy:
(ALL Qin ships will be the slowest in the game)
Qin Galleon: The Galleon can hold more troops than any other ship but the marines are significantly weaker due to weight limitations for the ship, requiring they wear lighter armor. Allowing them to swarm other decks at the cost of less health.
Qin Hwacha Galleon: This Galleon places a Hwacha crew in place of soldiers allowing them to fire 1 volley of a barrage at 1 ship, destroying whatever is hit.
Choosing Qin as your culture grants you a +10% engineering build speed and -10% food consumption of armies. However, you suffer a +10% increase in price of tier 4-6 Soldiers and units and a -10% persuasion chance with lords of a different culture.
Let me know what you think of these as I personally love them and loved writing them! Let me know of any factions you'd like to see as well as writing about this is fun for everyone.

2022.04.28 01:07 _Boodstain_ Ideas For More Factions and Locations

2022.04.26 07:05 iTsRoboWasTaken Another Day, another post! Today, I'll be showing off the best cards for rainbow decks!

Firstly, I hope you all know that the best rainbow deck features 6 arts and culture cards, and 2 from every album. (The best ones at least)
Staples(Must haves):
Eros (obviously)
Color Spectrum(Obviously)
Renaissance (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, SINCE IT WILL BUFF YOUR ARTS AND CULTURE CARDS WHO DON'T BENEFIT FROM EROS/COLOR SPECTRUM)
Arts and Culture:
Heimdall - Definitely add this. This is way too overpowered to not add, plus, this is one of the few decks that actually triggers it, so it would be a staple if it wasn't so hard to get lol.
Stradivarius - If you have enough energy to play it, strad is one of the best cards, as long as you remember to play it in the middle slot...
The Tower (XVI) - This is one of the greatest tarot cards in the game. When played, it buffs a random card in either player's hand by 100, and if you're winning, that card is guranteed to be yours. This is definitely a great card. You can even tell which card it buffs by playing it and then taking it back, meaning you can control the card it buffs if you wait some turns.
Agamemnon - You probably won't be running other greek mythology cards in your rainbow deck, so this card is definitely good for its energy cost, buffing itself by 90 power when played.
Hel - Probably one of the most OP cards in the game, Hel is definitely a must have for rainbow decks, if you can afford it... Buffing +55 to all cards near the end of the game, you certainly are putting your opponents in Hel
Archangel - This card works similarly to the Tower, but instead, it uses "until played" and "permanently" buffs.
Honorable Mentions: Burrito, Kronos, Charles Dickens, Brothers Grimm, Nazca Lines, Art Deco, Ghost (if energy is needed DESPERATELY), Ouroboros, Japanese Yen, Loki/King Midas (league rule dependent).
Now this list would be longer, but I don't wanna spend all night writing, so yeah. Next album
Oceans and Seas
Payara - Enough said. Payara is a great card to keep in your hand until the end of the game, as its +20 per turn and eros benefits stack up perfectly.
Flying Cloud - Yes, the most overpowered-for-its-rarity card in the game. This card can end up as 5/200 if you cycle it properly, but watch out for shinigami!
Sea Sheep - As a fusion, its relatively easy to obtain. It is also one of the best fusions, as it works similarly to arthropleura.
Flying Dutchman - Why are there so many flying boats? Eh whatever. Read the card for yourself. Dutchman is OP.
Honorable Mentions: Hammerhead shark, Bobbit Worm, Yangtze River (small decks), Electric Eel, Goblin Shark,
Space
Hypernova - If you don't put hypernova in your deck, you simply are uneducated. There are so few space cards to add into your rainbow deck, that hypernova is a must have.
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) - This card costs only 3 energy, and does a LOT of damage. If you cycle it properly, it will lose a minimum of 24 power from its start ability, and when played, will gain up to +96 power! Talk about value!
HD 189733 B - Okay, this is an underrated card, but if you have a lot of energy, certainly worth playing! The turn it is drawn, it has a whopping 9/160 base power, which a lot of players certainly don't seem to remember!
now there aren't many good space cards, so lemme know in the comments if you have any good space cards to put in your rainbow deck.
Honorable Mentions: Cydonia, Nostradamus, Tunguska Event, Olympus Mons, Rogue Planet
Life in Land
Pika - Obviously. Pika debuffs your opponents cards permanently, and gains +35 permanently, meaning that each time it is played, there is a net difference between you and your opponent of 70. Permanently.
Yellowjacket - The newest member of the life on land gang, Yellowjacket has a powerful start ability, and an even more powerful play ability. This is an extremely useful card to keep in your hand, that also can be played at any time whenever you need to clear up some space in your hand.
Chupacabra - Not a bad card ngl. This card's draw ability is super annoying, and with a 5/70 base power, it's not too bad of an attacker either.
Praying Mantis - Yeah, if you've played against it, you get what I mean. The card is actually better than it sounds, especially if it locks up payara in the final round of the game.
Honorable Mentions: General Sherman, Mosquito, Aye Aye, Mosquito, Arabian Horse, Elf, Phoenix, "The Tree" (for stradivarius), Lithops
History
Shinigami - Read the card. Too OP. Just too OP. Best. Card. In. The. Game.
Andronikos II Palaiologos - This thing buffs your cards by 26 for NINE turns... meaning many of your cards can get +52 power at one time! The -10 perm debuff is worthwhile, as long as you don't cycle it in twice in the last two rounds.
Testudo Formation - This is a very important card in big energy decks. Be sure to use it wisely and don't trade a single testudo away. This is also way too overpowered.
Kumamoto Castle - One of the easiest to get starter cards and debuff card, just make sure you have enough energy to play it!
Bonnie and Clyde - Severely underrated card that has a crazy good draw ability, but you just need to make sure you have enough energy to play it!
Honorable Mentions: Taj Mahal, Jade Emperor (deck dependent), Amber Room, Foo Fighter
Paleontology
Dire Wolf - This is too good to be true. If you have enough energy, you definitely want to have this card. When played, the effect isnt too good, but buffing your cards by +16 upon draw and until played is pretty sweet if you ask me.
Arthropleura - This card is too valuable, and a must have for almost any deck featuring paleo cards. It is a great debuff card and insanely useful (and valuable).
Attenborosaurus - This card works well in rainbow decks, since it buffs life on land, oceans, AND paleo. Just make sure you can afford it, since it is pretty valuable at times!
Loch Ness Monster - This is annoying to play against, especially if played on the second last turn of the game. Fortunately, with the new lock change coming, you may be able to combat it slightly, but otherwise, good luck staying sane with this one!
Honorable Mentions - Arsinotherium, Peking Man, Hatzegopteryx, Akylosaurus, Unicorn
Science
Chronophotographic Gun - Probably the most valuable limleg in the entire game, Chronogun is definitely very valuable for your deck. It's basically a knockoff shinigami! What else could you want?
Door to Hell - If this card doesn't immediately come to mind when thinking about science cards, idk what will. Door to hell is overpowered, and actually overpowered. Just read the card.
The Brain - This card is... well.... damn... uh pretty good! It locks itself, but gives great benefits, and even locks an opponent's card when returned! Not a bad deal, if you ask me! Just be prepared to go through a lot to get the fusion ingredients, because people recognize it's value.
Giant's Causeway - Pretty good card. Even if you lost the turn, this card debuffs your opponent's cards for the next turn. Perfect for playing on a final round to catch a headstart for the next round!
Siege Tower - If you have enough energy, put this card in your deck. Trust me, you'll feel the benefits for yourself.
The Multiverse - Not a bad card for small rainbow decks, but during big leagues, the number 11 will barely do anything. unless 11 energy... but thats another story lol
Honorable Mentions: Virtual Reality, Zhangye Danxia Landforms (VERY SITUATIONAL), Hippocrates, Kettering Bug, Simulation Theory, Cloaking Device

ok that did take too long. enjoy. good night.

2022.01.07 12:26 potato_cucumber On the Primordial One, the Moon Sisters, Enkanomiya, and beyond.

0. Preface

Exploring Enkanomiya was such a delight. Honestly, I expected a lot of lorebombs about Celestia and learn a little more about the world like when Dragonspine dropped, but I never thought they'd go this hard. We even got vague and totally unexpected Venti crumbs!
With that being said, this post is my attempt to sort through information we have to piece some semblance of a timeline together, and maybe interpret a few other things, with the help of existing in-game lore and some real world connections. Hope to hear your thoughts too!
Edit 02/23: Added some additional thoughts and details pointed out by other users! Edits will be written in bold.
Note 02/23: I just wanted to add that just like real-life history, Teyvat's lore is written by victors, individuals who were not there to see either the actual event they're writing about and/or the aftermath, and people adding their own personal or religious biases to their accounts. While this is an interpretation of what we have so far, please take this (and any other in-game books/item lore) with a grain of salt until 100% confirmed by the story itself.

I. The Primordial One, the Orphic Egg

The Primordial One may have been Phanes. It had wings and a crown, and was birthed from an egg, androgynous in nature. But for the world to be created, the egg's shell had to be broken.
- On Phanes, or The Primordial One (The Byakuyakoku Collection, Before Sun and Moon)
Phanes, the Primordial One, is the central character of the version of the creation story that we have so far. Like their counterpart from Greco-Roman Mythology, they were born from a world egg. I'll not deep-dive into it because that probably needs an entire post itself, but some versions of the real-world Phanes myth attributes the hatching to two gods: Khronos and Ananke, giving them a link to Time and Fate (Necessity or Inevitability) — just like Genshin's own version of Phanes.
With this in mind, this passage makes a little more sense:
The Primordial One may have been Phanes. It had wings and a crown, and was birthed from an egg, androgynous in nature. But for the world to be created, the egg's shell had to be broken.
Phanes was born out of necessity. For the world we're currently playing in to be created, the egg had to hatch. It was necessary. It was inevitable.
And again, like the Greek source, the egg was split into two. But unlike in real-life myths where it was split into Heaven (Ouranos) and Earth (Gaea), Phanes himself used the egg shell to separate the "universe" and the "microcosm of the world."
This "microcosm of the world" may mean humanity itself. According to Plato, the world, or the macrocosm, is alive and sentient, and humanity as its microcosm reflects this. If you want to learn more about what Plato has to say, you can read more about it here.
Back to Genshin!
Take note that Phanes using an egg to fashion the universe and humanity might not be entirely accurate, and could be the in-story writer's attempt at interpreting the world's creation. After all, unreliable narrators exists, due to reasons such as lack of information and historical distortion, even in worlds like Genshin where gods walked — and still walk — among humanity.
Regardless, there must be some truth to what the in-game stories say. After hatching from their egg and doing other eggy things, what did Phanes do next? They descended to the world we'll eventually know as Teyvat and spent the battle the seven dragon sovereigns who are the ancestors of modern-day Vishaps (which makes one wonder where the Anemo and Electro Vishaps are).
Edit: While it could be interpreted that the world outside of Teyvat (such as the Dark Sea) are outside the metaphorical egg's shell, and Teyvat is inside, I also offer another explanation: Phanes separated the world from the universe with the firmament (more on it later) acting as the shell.
To accompany him, he created four shining shades. Three of them remain unnamed for now, but the fourth is Kairos, also known as Tokoyo Ookami and her divine name Istaroth, the enigmatic God of Time, who would eventually find her placea in two very different nations. But let's talk more about her later.
What are these four shades, exactly? Are they merely new gods created by Phanes to help them in their tasks? Are they clones of Phanes that embady certain aspect of the Primordial One? Or are they, in a way, considered Phanes' own children? We don't know for now, but I'm inclined to believe the first option.
Now, in-game text says that "forty winters entombed the flames, and forty summers churned the seas," but let's take the exact numbers with a grain of salt. Perhaps the number was meant to by the author to be symbolic. Regardless, Phanes waged a brutal war against the Seven Sovereigns that certainly lasted for a while.
Edit: As pointed out by u/RubyN2, the number 40 is a symbolic way for many religions to depict a long period of time.
Note: I'm not sure where to squeeze this in, but Greek Phanes is associated with creation and light. This might will be an important detail for something I want to delve further into later.

II. Creation, Humanity, The Moon Sisters, and the Seelie

The Seven Sovereigns were vanquished, and the seven nations submitted to the heavens.
Here's where things get interesting. It seems like the importance of the number seven, and even the seven-nation system, predates the rule of Celestia. Perhaps it has some sort of importance that we don't know about yet.
Regardless, with the Seven Sovereigns out of the way, the seven nations of the world bowed to their new ruler who then indulges in the joy of creation in earnest. (But could it really be called creation if the world existed prior to it?) Phanes creates mountains and seas, with the latter becoming home to those who refused to bow to their rule. With the help of one of their aspects, they created the flora and fauna of the new world, before creating what must have been their magnum opus: humanity.
Our ancestors, numerous as the stars in the sky, uncountable as the sand on the shore. From that time, our ancestors made a covenant with the Primordial One, and so entered into a new age.
Entering a contract, or should we say, a covenant, humanity prospered under Phanes' rule. Humanity's happiness was Phanes' happiness, and everything this deity did was for the prosperity of humanity. And prosper, humans did. They worked the land and mined the mountains, and even learned how to write poetry!
Edit: Adding to this, it's also possible that Phanes or their shades did not create humans. The use of the term "ark" and an implied opening may even mean that Phanes arrived in Teyvat specifically to bring humanity there. Are they survivors of another lost civilization? Are they a product of Honkai's Project Ark? Ah, the endless possibilities.
And this is where we start entering the realm of theory.
Without any proper timeline to draw on, it's easy enough to make conjenctures from other in-game lore content that we have. To make it easier for all of us, I'll also cite my sources whenever they pop up!
Aside from humans, it's clear that there are other creatures in the world during Phanes' rule. Aside from their four aspects, there were also the defeated Vishaps who retreated to the seas — at least to the people of Enkanomiya's knowledge. Others, as we know from Azhdaha and his own people, retreated to the mountains.
But this must also be the time when the Seelies and the infamous Moon Sisters fluorished, the Seelies, perhaps, even belonging to the original seven nations that bowed to Phanes' might. They may have even been tasked to guide humanity as elders of sorts, and humasn may have even seen them as angels — an imagery that Celestia may have stolen for themselves later.
"A song of the Seelie," Replied the pale young maiden in a soft voice. "Long, long ago, we wrote this song for the human savages. Yet now, we sing it to mourn our own fate."
- A Drunkard's Tale Vol. 3
Edit: The Seelies had palaces in the Dark Sea. But as guides of humanity, they definitely had a presence in Teyvat too, as evidenced by the existence of Seelie courts all over the place.
As for the Moon Sisters, I believe that they may be the other three shades that Phanes created at the beginning. The Solomon Knots we find all over Teyvat could represent these four shades, and the Triquetra could represent the moon sisters themselves, with Istaroth acting as a force independent of them. Edit: To add to this, the "moon" part of the moon sisters lore might not even be accurate, and could have been added by humanity as the real events behind their stories eroded with time.
While Istaroth spends her time, well, being the God of Time, the Moon Sisters (known as Aria, Sonnet, and Canon edit: in the surviving stories, at least. Perhaps they had their own divine names.) could be in charge of something more offensive — that is, to keep any outside threats at bay.
The moons were daughters of prose and song, sovereign over the night sky. They navigated the heavens above in their silver carriage, alternating with one another thrice a month. If the reign was not promptly passed from one sister to the next, a terrible disaster would occur that very day.
- Moonlit Bamboo Forest Vol. 3
Whether it's the three sisters standing guard, or as part of an ancient ritual, the three sisters must symbolically pass the carriage between each other thrice a month to prevent a terrible disaster. But what could this disaster be?
Edit: I have another interpretation for the moon sisters/Celestia connection, but that's for another post.

III. Celestia

Exactly what it says on the tin.
Phanes and his shades were aware of Celestia's existence, and perhaps even its true nature. And with Phanes intent on keeping humanity happy and prosperous, everything had to be done to keep the threat of Celestia at bay.
Back then, no gods walked the earth, and the whole land belonged to a single civilization.
- Enjou, The Subterranean Trails of Drake and Serpent
It's true that this passage could speak about the time before Phanes' arrival. After all, even Phanes, the Primordial One, came from outside of the world. But with the mention of seven nations in the book that Enjou was looking for itself, I'm more inclined to believe that the single civilization he was talking about was from Phanes' time. Enkanomiya's architecture and language may have even been an offshoot of this old civilization as they were the only ones who survived the deletion attempt of Celestia.
Note: Enkanomiya's Greek naming schemes and (as pointed out by a friend) its architecture are similar to the Twins'. But more on that later, I'm getting too off-topic now.
As long as the Moon Sisters managed to switch places in the night sky three times a month, all was good in the civilization below. But like in many stories (and even in Genshin lore itself) destruction often follows prosperity.
According to Records of Jueyun Vol. 4, a Seelie met and fell in love with a traveler from afar, and wed them in the halls of the Lunar Palace itself. Under mysterious circumstances, the three Moon Sisters failed to switch places and disaster struck, allowing Celestia to enter the world, with the Seelie and their lover possibly suffering a curse of separation for attempting to flee during the event.
Just as Phanes conquered the world from the Seven Sovereigns, Celestia conquered the world from Phanes.
But what could have stopped the Moon Sisters from switching? Could it have something to do with the Seelie wedding, hence the curse on the Seelie and their lover? Or is there some truth to Moonlit Bamboo Forest, where the sisters engaged in infighting, perhaps due to their shared lovea for the morning stars?
There many theories already floating around that Teyvat has a firmament, or that it IS the firmament, with all the various interpretations involved. But What if I tell you that this firmament already broke, and that this may be why there's a fake sky?
In its most basic description, a firmament is a tangible heavenly dome that divides the primordial sea so that dry land could exist below. This means that aside from the sea many of us know, there's also a sea beyond the heavens, surrounding the firmament.
Edit: As pointed out by various comments, the firmament is confirmed to be exist, as according to the Chaos Oculus. (Apparently Reddit won't let me add links when editing so, eh.)
In the ancient past, these ruins were once part of a civilization mighty enough to almost touch the dome of the firmament, while "ruin" still waits in the deep places of the earth, awaiting the order to arise and tread all kingdoms underfoot.
Would be a shame if it the firmament breaks, doesn't it?
The second throne of the heavens came, and war was rekindled, as it was in the world's creation. That day, the heavens collapsed and the earth was rent asunder. Our ancestors and their ancestral land fell into this place during that conflict. The era of darkness had begun.
- The Funerary (The Byakuyakoku Collection, Before Sun and Moon)
And break it does, just like in many flood myths, allowing Celestia to enter the world that Phanes painstakingly cultivated and wage a war where the conquerors eventually emerged victorious. Enkanomiya was submerged in the subsequent attack, but it was not the only place that would sink in what would eventually become Inazuma.
Sometime in the ancient past, the mountains rose higher than the skies, and the earth was larger than heaven's dome. But one day, the mirror shattered, and the oceans arose. In these legends, this caused the court of the primeval sakura to become sundered from the other islands.
- Violet Court description
They say that in antediluvian times now lost to history, there was once a foolish ruler who dreamed of building a high garden in honor of the white sacred tree over the primordial sands. Now, dead silence fills the kingdom built on sand, but the obsessions of the past remain.
- Court of Flowing Sand description, do take note that "antedeluvian" means "before the flood."
Even later (still ancient) civilizations would call back to these antedeluvian times, such as the priests in the Prayers for Illumination.
To antediluvian ruins and long-buried altars of sacrifice, to seek answers and enlightenment...
The Violet Court isn't the only placea that mentions a broken mirror, however. I want to also bring attention to an unreleased weapon which may also point towards Celestia's identity as an outside threat.
A weapon fragment from the epic battle waged by ancient extra terrestrial conquerors. It once had the power to extinguish moonlight.
- Mirror Breaker
The land around Inazuma itself took a huge blow. The place we now know as the Violet Court was "sundered," or separated from other islands, and other landforms could have sunk at this time period too. Enkanomiya itself, geographically part of Inazuma, sank to the realms beneath the sea, never to be seen for years and years. For reasons unknown, Kairos remains with them during this ordeal, though she eventually disappears from their histories too.
Edit: Now, as the actual text in Before Sun and Moon says, the scribe that wrote it believes that Phanes and their shades won. But why exactly haven't they answered prayers since then, save for Istaroth/Kairos, whom we know is still active in her own way?
Just like other lore content, especially those written from a biased point of view, we shouldn't take the supposed victory at face value. After all, the people in Enkanomiya have been thrown underground for ages and were isolated from the outside world until Orobashi arrived. They do not have any means of knowing whether Phanes really won. Given the way Teyvat is right now, it's highly possible that Celestia is the second throne, and the victor in the war.

IV. The Aftermath and Other Last Thoughts

The humans who were left behind on the surface dwindled. Perhaps Celestia's attack that cost them their civilization also took away their history, their technology, and all the knowledge their old god provided to them. In fact, they may have even been plunged into an Ice Age, kickstarting the Prayers artifacts we've all been milking for all they're worth.
The envoys of the gods walked among benighted humanity then. In those days, life was weak, and the earth was blanketed in unending ice.
- Prayers to Springtime
We do know that Celestia is capable of such weather manipulation, as we've seen in Dragonspine. And they're capable enough of plunging people into chaos until they forget knowledge their own old civilizations, as was the case in Tsurumi Island.
With the humans subdued, Istaroth stuck underwater, and the Moon Sisters dead, that leaves Phanes unaccounted for. However, the Traveler's own lore may offer an answer for that.
The keeper is fading away; the creator has not yet come.
- Traveler's Character Details
As the creator of the world, it's easy to see this descritption being about Phanes. Perhaps they fled after their defeat in Celestia's hands, biding their time until they can meet the Traveler. Or perhaps they've been taken by the powers-that-be in Celestia, waiting for the Traveler to rescue them near the end of their journey. Or maybe, just maybe, they have left, or slept, even before the war began, and it is all up to the Traveler and their friends to set right what once went wrong.
And that's it for now! I had a lot of fun infodumping here and sharing my thoughts, but it has grown kinda long (way, way longer than I expected) and no one wants a boring read! Thank you for reading despite the abrupt, and I hope you gained something from an old hag's rambling. I want to hear your thoughts too before I proceed with Part 2!

The World of Avowed - Abydon, god of crafting and the forge

Read first: For those who aren't aware - Avowed takes place in a fictional fantasy setting called 'Eora'. Eora is also the setting for two other Obsidian-created games: Pillars of Eternity, and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Using the lore from the two Pillars games, we can explore this world called Eora, meaning we can learn more about the world of Avowed. I've already posted some lore about the races and deities of this world. This post will be about a specific god of Eora, called Abydon, aka: the Iron Arm. Let's dive in!

WARNING - there will be minor spoilers for the Pillars of Eternity game in this post - WARNING

Ten of the Eleven gods of the Eoran pantheon
BRIEF PREVIEW OF THE GODS OF EORA (the spoiler-free version)
In Eora there is a pantheon of eleven gods: Abydon, Berath, Eothas, Galawain, Hylea, Magran, Ondra, Rymrgand, Skaen, Wael, and Woedica. Each of these gods is formed around a set of ideals, and as such are driven to live by those ideals. Often each god will have favoured dispositions, which is a personality type or a way of living that each deity prefers (both for themselves and their followers). In-game, this mechanic serves as an added layer of role-play. The gods, at times referred to as the gods of the Engwithans (Engwith was an ancient society of peoples, long died out by the time of Pillars of Eternity I + II), have a very peculiar history. In an effort to keep this section spoiler-free I will redirect people to my older post about deities, or to the Pillars of Eternity wiki - OR to play Pillars of Eternity themselves; if they wish to learn the history of the Eoran gods. If one has a careful eye, you can spot the symbol of one such deity in the Avowed reveal trailer.

ABYDON (AH-bee-don) - god of crafting and the forge
\"Restored\" Abydon
OVERVIEW Also called the Iron Arm, the Golem, or the Smith of Magran; Abydon is patron god of industry, machines, golems, smiths, skilled trades, apprenticeships, strengths, mining/metals, hope, and aspiration. As well he is the patron deity for a faction called the Knights of the Crucible (deserving of their own lore post). According to the Pillars of Eternity Guidebook, Vol. 1, Abydon is allied with Magran; being the god of war, Magran has close ties to Abydon because of his influence in creating tools for war. Abydon is foes with the deity Skaen, this is due to Abydon's passive surrender towards Magran, which Skaen despises.
We do not learn of his official dispositions in-game, but one could wager his favoured dispositions are passionate and honesty; with his hated dispositions being deceptive and cruel. Followers of Abydon should work hard, value the work of others, and teach students their craft.

RELATIONSHIP TO MORTALS
In the Pillars of Eternity Guidebook, Vol. 1 Abydon is described as follows:
"To many in the working classes, Abydon is a comforting god, demanding nothing of his followers beyond a hard day’s work and forthright service to their employers, customers, and lords.
He is also an aspirational deity, representing hope for a better future by honest labor instead of plots or machinations. He encourages his followers to remake themselves by learning new skills and trades, just as he “remade” himself in his new artificial form.
All of his clergy are expected to master a practical skill such as smithing or carpentry, and to teach that skill to those who are eager to learn. As such, Abydon has become quite popular, despite his unusual form"

HISTORY (spoilers for the White March DLC in Pillars of Eternity)
\"Unrestored\" Abydon
Abydon is one of the eleven Engwithan gods. Some have referred to him as the god of duty, industry, progress or preservation - though the latter of the four may no longer be the case (at the time of Pillars of Eternity).
Bestiary image for \"Eyeless\"
Abydon had founded the White Forge (located in an in-game area known as the White March) where he created an army of mechanical vessels called the Eyeless. The Eyeless were created by Abydon as assistants for his work on Eora. In the DLC for the first Pillars game, we encounter Eyeless as a looming and enigmatic enemy. Throughout the playthrough of the DLC we learn about the history of the Eyeless as well as their transition of ownership to a new god, the one the people of Eora all believe created and own the Eyeless: Ondra.
In-game scripted event; sketch of Eyeless' portrait on right
Truth be told, even Abydon does not recall that the Eyeless were his own creation. At some point in the past the goddess, Ondra, took hold of the smallest of Eora's moons and flung it at Eora in an effort to wipe the Engwithan race from existence. Abydon, being a deity driven by preservation, intervened, costing him his corporeal life.
Screenshot of player characters inside the maw of Abydon's skull
Before the moon would impact Eora, Abydon smithed a great hammer in the White Forge and hurled it toward the incoming moon. Destroyed, most of the pieces of the moon plummetted harmlessly into Eora's oceans and remote mountains; however, the largest portion of the moon remained on course, and so the god of duty did what he felt he must - the placed himself in the trajectory of the moon shard. The god's body now lay dead in the White March. Ondra, who loved Abydon, wept for him. She erected a place of Ondrite worship at his body, calling it the Abbey of the Fallen Moon; as well she took the Eyeless for herself. Abydon would eventually return anew since only his body was destroyed, but Ondra (the deity of forgetfulness) would remove Abydon's memories of the conflict and distance herself from him entirely. Eventually, Abydon's body is re-made, as a golem, made of metal - his memories and will to preserve, gone.

SCRIPTURE - daily affirmations of focus and efficiency
Scriptural tome
In the Pillar of Eternity game there is a book one can find which outlines 9 tenants of Abydon, which worshippers of the deity behold themselves to. They are as such: (bold words are my own comments)
1. All errors can be reforged into lessons. Abydon rebuilt himself from ruin. No setback is insurmountable, not even death itself, so long as the soul is dedicated to the task. (not so much focused on overcoming any setback, but reforging setbacks (errors) into something good (lessons))
2. Work hard, work well, Abydon demands only honest labor and forthright service. All errors can be reforged if your first intentions are pure.
3. All ignorance can be reforged into knowledge. Master your craft, excel at what you have been trusted to do. Do not offend your teacher by remaining a student forever. (close to the second affirmation, this is more so about increasing in your ability, whereas affirmation #2 is doing well at your current level)
4. Each generation must forge its successors. Teach your trade to all who are willing to learn, and in doing so, multiply the fruits of your knowledge. (to disobey this affirmation would be to break affirmation #8 - value the work of others; for if you purposefully do not pass on your trade, then your work was about valuing yourself alone)
5. All difficulties can be reforged into triumphs (by now we see a consistent motif of "all _______ can be reforged"). Meet strife with humility and acceptance. Let adversity temper the ingot of your will and you will never shatter.
6. Embrace your station, fulfill the duties of your rank and meddle not in the affairs of your betters. All guilds fail at their weakest link. (if everyone were all weapon smiths we would have no armor, or tools, or horseshoes, etc. To elevate one station of work over another is a societal view, as Abydon would likely view all work as valuable)
7. All loss can be reforged into strength. Profitable work heals all emptiness. So long as you have the tools of your trade, you will always be able to forge wealth anew.
8. Value the works of others and they will value your works in return. Share the harvest with the hungry and your tools with the destitute.
9. All souls can be reforged into whatever we will. Hard work is not exclusive to life, death is no time for complacency. Commit yourself to excellence in this cycle and the next. (here we can see the metaphor of forging extending beyond the blacksmith's forge; affirmation #9 allows you to re-read the previous affirmations in light of the soul).
Abydon is one of my favorite deities, simply because of the tenants outlined above. WHICH AFFIRMATION DO YOU CONSIDER THE MOST 'VALUABLE'? For me, it is #8: "value the works of others".

ITEM DESCRIPTION & LORE
In many video games item descriptions contain flavour text which reveals much lore about the game world (for example, nearly every item in the FPS: Destiny). Pillars of Eternity (and likely Avowed) is no different. Here are some items which speak about Abydon.
Gauntlets of Greater Reliability
The Gauntlets of Greater Reliability have the symbol of Abydon stamped on them. Their item description reads: (bolded words are my comments)
Stamped with the sigil of Abydon, these cleverly-crafted gloves feature fully articulated joints. The weight of the armguards seems specifically designed to help counterbalance that of a weapon.(while each smithee is dedicated to their own trade/workstation, a product of work like a sword, is made better by a complementary product of work, like a gauntlet. Collaborative work would likely be pleasing to Abydon - perhaps that's worth noting if Abydon appears in Avowed***).***
Abydon's Hammer (unrestored)
Abydon's Hammer is a quest item in Pillars of Eternity. It reads: (bold words are my own comments)
Despite being topped by a mere fragment of Abydon's original hammer (meaning Abydon's hammer is quite large, and thus so is his corporeal form), this weapon, now sized for kith hands, is still an instrument of awesome destructive force. The faces of the great hammer's head still bear the toolmarks of their creator. Not even the fires of the White Forge could erase Abydon's work. (Abydon, being the god of crafting, cannot be 'out-crafted')
In-game Tome icon
There is a, in-game lore book entitled Abydon's Hands which tells a folk tale about small creatures called Abydon's hands that do his work throughout Eora (such as sculpting mountains and creating natural archways). This little tale shows the deity's affinity towards creativity. Its in-game text reads: (bold words are my own comments)
"Of all the stories of all the gods, no doubt one of the most charming is the legend of Abydon's Hands.
In some cultures, Abydon's Hands are tiny, cheerful creatures (these creatures, being workers for Abydon, are considered metaphorical extensions of his person) that hide in the walls and in the cracks between paving stones. In others (cultures, that is), they are silent men of stone who roam distant lands. In all such tales, however, they are Abydon's constructs, built in his image to continue his good work of creating strong and wondrous things in this world. (so, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to say that you could be considered "Abydon's Hands" as well).
Thus, upon spying a mighty mountain peak, or a row of adra pillars, or another natural marvel, parents and nursemaids will tell young children that these are the work of Abydon's Hands.
Such is the appeal of Abydon as a deity, as it is through his legend that we recognize familiar shapes in the natural world. Thus, when we see a landform that resembles a colonnade, or an arched gate, or a mighty home, we see a hand and a purpose at work that is not unlike our own.
And while Abydon's own identity as a construct is alienating to some, to many of us, his crude yet practical shape is comforting. While the other gods take the form of birds, beast, and sea, Abydon takes the shape of our most common tools and constructions (indeed, some may wield a forge hammer and say they hold Abydon himself in their hands). His debasement in a body of iron elevates our own works and labors, and it offers us a grand hope. For if a god could rebuild himself out of iron, what wonders might kith create with their own hands?"
Journal entry
Another book featuring Abydon: Precepts and Proverbs of Abydon. This is a journal acquired in the DLC of the first Pillars game. The text reads: (bold words are my own comment)
"For every work there is a practice. Arm yourself with skill and temper your labors with patience.
Strike only when your medium is ready. Do not cold work plate.
Brittle steel is worse than a treacherous friend. Temper your work lest it shatter like glass. (here the quality of the steel is contrasted with the quality of a friendship; and so the 'work' of steel-smithing is also the 'work' put into relationships)
Fools praise appearance, but the master praises strength.
True virtue lies in work well done. Pattern-welded steel shall be folded no fewer than seven times.
The finest smith cannot shape poor metals. Set your hand to steels that have been properly treated with charcoal.
Like a room full of discord is a forge with uneven heat. Do not let it pervert your metal.
As the blows of the hammer speak to the steel, so the color of the steel speaks to the smith.
Like a babe is heated steel, fragile and easily corrupted. Handle it gently, lest your haste twist and warp it. (as well, how you form steel in its heated stage will determine the form it takes when it hardens - much like how a person's childhood will form a majority of their adult lifestyle/personality)
Do not neglect work that lies hidden and unseen, for a shoddy tang can break the blade.
The wise smith works carefully and anneals but once. The careless smith weeps to find flaws after the steel has been hardened and tempered.
As a blade drawn in multiple heats is work done in its proper time."
Bronze Abydon Statuette
The last item I will feature here is simply a little trinket known as a bronze Abydon statuette. It is simply a small statue that civilians within the White March would have in their homes that was created in the White Forge itself.

PERSONAL NOTES / REFLECTIONS
Abydon is one of my favorite deities to study in the game, as I value the nuggets of wisdom the Obsidian game writers put in his lore. There is a large emphasis on work using smithing/forging as the main driving illustration. Players in Avowed who wish to follow Abydon will do well to adhere to his tenants. Good work of one's craft and the valuing of another's work may lead to his approval. If Abydon is a followable deity in Avowed, perhaps this would a backstory choice for players wishing to do well in a smithing build (if such a build will be possible in Avowed).

TRIVIA
  • "Abydon" sounds similar to "Abaddon", a Greek equivalent for the Hebrew word "Apollyon", which appears in Revelations, a book of the Bible, meaning both (1) a place of destruction as well as (2) an archangel of the Abyss

CLOSING QUESTION:
Since Abydon was the god of preservation, he was driven to intervene with Ondra's attack on the Engwithan society (to preserve them). If he had not acted as such, could he even be considered a god of preservation? Did he have the freedom to do otherwise?
If Abydon were to learn of his death at Ondra's hands, there is fear within the deity's that this would collapse the tense peace that currently exists between them. Why would this be the catalyst to losing peace amongst the gods?
Is Abydon a patron god you would follow? If so, why or why not?

THANKS ALL! BE SURE TO UPVOTE AND COMMENT. I LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING BETTER WITH THESE POSTS. :)

2020.07.26 00:57 Genprey Symbolism of Magia Record: The Silence of Iroha

Previous: The Past and Future of Yachiyo
Here we are at the main heroine of the game. As mentioned in Yachiyoy's section, Iroha's part is a bit of a continuation from that, so if you haven't already, I'd suggest reading Yachiyo's section before this one as there will be a few things I'll be recalling from there.
Starting with a bit of a character profile, one of Iroha's themes is that of "silence", which is very broad, but when applied to Iroha, I feel the writers are referring to these aspects of her character:
Iroha is a rather meek girl, and something that's very important to understand is that meekness is not synonymous with being weak--infact, the personality trait has its share of both positives and negatives. A person who is "meek" is often passive, humble, and more apt at listening to others/more willing to follow the example of a leader-figure. These traits are a bit of a double-edged sword, in that those associated may lack confidence in themselves or be too dependent on others to guide them. The difference between someone who is "weak" is the ability/willingness to act. Despite being a passive girl, Iroha never hesitates to step in and help others, even at the expense of her health/life.
When we are introduced to Iroha, she immediately comes off as being somewhat shy and shows difficulty expressing herself, particularly to her peers, in which she feels distant to. Silence here would refer to Iroha being soft-spoken, but also her lack of presence, in general.
"To be silenced" broadly refers to...well, being forced to keep quiet through threats, force, or coercion. In Iroha's case, not only is she unable to recall her wish, but Ui, in general, seems to be absent from the minds of most everyone. Looking at the room the siblings share, Ui's side has been wiped clean, leaving Iroha's stuff awkwardly cluttered all on one side.
Iroha's motivation, while mostly noble and highly understandable, basically has her running around like a chicken with its head cutoff/looking for a golden goose. Throughout her adventure, Iroha faces several things that raise questions about the existence of Ui/Iroha's memories, but despite this she proceeds with her search. Likewise, Iroha ignores Yachiyo's warnings/protests during their first encounteafter initially approaching the Wings of Magius, Mifuyu's indoctrination, and Touka and Nemu's denial. Given all this, we can say that Iroha silenced anything that goes against her chase, but also any potential risks, dangers, and protests associated with her being involved with the issues that burden her friends.
Iroha's name is actually the same as a poem written by Buddhist Monk, Kobo-Daishi, which is translated as such:
Although its scent still lingers on the form of a flower has scattered awayFor whom will the glory of this world remain unchanged?Arriving today at the yonder side of the deep mountains of evanescent existenceWe shall never allow ourselves to drift away intoxicated, in the world of paper dreams.
Doing my best to break this down, the first 2 lines describe the permanence of flowers which, even upon death, remain beautiful and leave a fragrant smell behind. At the same time, this is also a reference to the fleeting nature of all living things, where even something so beautiful can suddenly disappear before our eyes. This thought is carried on to the 3rd and 4th lines, as the poem questions if anything is capable of keeping its preciousness forever. "Evanescent" refers to something that gradually vanishes, and as put in lines 5 and 6, "mountain" doesn't necessarily refer to the landform you might be thinking of, rather, one's deeds throughout his/her own life. In the last line, a "paper dream" are those that are shallow or of little meaning. Put together, the poem ends by stating that one should never let his or herself get stuck on the the little/ephemeral things in life.
Applied to our pink heroine, the first 2 lines could refer to Ui, who would disappear, leaving Iroha with only faint memories of her. Upon seeking her out, Iroha becomes a different girl, particularly as she develops and commits to helping her friends as she moves from point A of her journey to point B. The last lines are up for a lot of different interpretation; they can represent Iroha's resilience to the temptation and promises of the Wings of Magius, her forward momentum as she sets off away from home into a brand new territory, and likely quite a bit of things I can't think of.
Likewise, "Iroha" is also the fundamentals to the Japanese writing system, with "i" being "A", "ro" as "B, and "ha" as "C". This is a bit of a weird reference, but if I were to take a stab in the dark, I'd say it's referring to Iroha ultimately being a normal/typical girl, put aside the whole Magical Girl thing.
When transformed, Iroha's appearance becomes similar to that of a hunter, sporting a hooded cloak that, if not for being so dang bright, would be effective at concealing her presence. Underneath, she wears a skin-tight outfit of a darker tone, but then a bright pink skirt. Putting aside all the conspicuous colors, Iroha is dressed for stealth, while her weapon, a small arm-mounted crossbow, is best suited for silently dispatching targets.
Taking a break from Iroha's fashion sense, we have the opening to the anime, Gomakashi, or "Deception" when translated to English.
Nowhere, nowhere could that heart be found.
It slipped by me and blinked.
We can interpret this as being Iroha's PoV, with her referring to Ui 's disappearance being so sudden. In this scene, there are an abundance of sakura petals, which are known for being very beautiful, but also short-lived. The scene transitions to Iroha sitting in her and Ui's room, most notable being the fact that Ui's side has been completely cleaned out, as if someone cut the room in half and replaced it with a blank side.
The world in a play knows nothing about pains. How unfair.
Following the title card, we see an image of a single drop hitting a body of water, creating ripples as it lands. As we learned from Yachiyo's section, ripples are associated with the concept of cause/effect, or, in this case, how a single action sets other actions in motion. As Iroha laments how the world around her moves on without knowing of her plight, Iroha walks up a set of stairs, signifying the start of her journey. Once she reaches the top, rain begins to pour as we see a blend of normalcy and the un-ordinary, where a variety of rumors/familiars appear in the city buildings in the background. Iroha then stumbles down the stairs, finally landing in a puddle. These scenes are designed to foretell the difficulty of Iroha's quest to find her sister, promising that she will, at times, slip and fall through conditions beyond her control.
Once you let in the noise, you might hear a faint voice.
This scene is actually pretty neat, as it allows room for one's own perspective. As Iroha shrugs off her fall, Yachiyo helps her up, letting her under her umbrella. Given Yachiyo's outfit, the opening scene here could actually take place sometime after the final moment of the last part, as Yachiyo begina walking off-screen. This caused me to check back and made me realize that she is actually carrying two umbrellas in both scenes: the black one she uses and another white one she has looped around her hip. Unless Yachiyo loves to switch around umbrellas during her walks, this would imply that she knew she was going to meet someone (likely Iroha) on her way.
In the foreground, we see a bush of, what appears to be, blue hydrangea flowers, and this is where things get a bit tricky. Flowers, even those of a same type/family, have specific meanings attached to them based on color. One meaning attached to blue hydrangea is female frigidity, and while I usually do not like to disregard anything in these analysis, I have to say I'm about 100% certain that is not what the designers were going for. The other is apologetic-ness, such as where a husband would gift his wife these flowers as a way to ask for forgiveness for an oopsie. This manages to make more sense than the former interpretation and is also funny when you apply it to Yachiyo and Iroha, but I'm also not certain about this.
Looking at hydrangea, in general, there are a few things to note:
Looking at the lyrics, we see another reference to Iroha's major theme relating to silence. This time, it implies that opening yourself up to accepting the hard truths ("noise") is the way to accomplishing your goal, or in Iroha's case, finding clues that'll lead her to her sister.
The flawed wish, like a glass marble, became more beautiful in turn.
I'll hold it from getting damaged.
Glass marbles, specifically, refer to the round, toy balls, which are known for being used in games, but also become more valuable over time, depending on such things as antiquity, condition, and design. You can probably interpret the wish here as a few things, but I, personally, see it as Iroha's own. Seeking to cure Ui of her illness, this desire would eventually end up being for naught, as Ui vanished, leaving little but cryptic dreams that beckons Iroha and other magical girls to come to Kamihama. As a result of this wish, Iroha is granted the ability to heal the ailments of others, a power that would become important to support her friends. Alternatively, this could also refer to Iroha becoming a magical girl, where Iroha gradually sees her own worth throughout her journey. If the video is any indication, this is supported as, when these lyrics are sung, we see Iroha embrace and become whole with her magical form.
Not understanding tears, bewilderment, or anything, where, where am I straying?
If, just a slight bit, can the present moment be wrapped delicately,
I'll just scoop up and present the truth inside your eyes and move towards the today that I believed.
In the first line, Iroha refers to the unknown as she seeks out Ui's whereabouts, but also her faint memories that originally serve as her only point of reference. We get 2 familiar bits of scenery, first being the visage of Madoka, and the next being that of a bird that flies past Iroha, creating ripples in the puddle before her. Using what we know from earlier, this, of course, refers to all that happens as Iroha embarks on her journey. Something we might be able to note about these scenes is the order they play in, which varies in meaning depending on how you perceive this scene. We first see Madoka speaking, followed by a surprised Iroha turning around as a bird flies past her. You can interpret this as Iroha reacting to Madoka's message or the bird.
This doesn't have anything to do with this analysis, but Felicia here is absolutely adorable. Something about the little jig she does with a serious face really makes her look like a kid. Which is strange to say, since she is a kid, but it's nice to see her unconsciously bob her body around like a normal kid who is getting excited/happy. I just really want to lift her on my shoulders and carry her some local cow farms.
Getting back on track, the last line in this part is much more hopeful, referencing the joys Iroha experiences as she meets people she legitimately likes/who love her back, as opposed to her old peers who Iroha never really clicked with. The main purpose of these last scenes is to present and establish our main party.
Continuing with Iroha's anime transformation (which is actually one of many, but I feel this one is more notable), Iroha jumps off a building before gearing up. What's remarkable about this scene is its resemblance to how young birds learn how to fly, where their parents just up and toss them off a cliff or tree. That's right, in the last mini-episode of my Nature Channel special, we learned about cows, but this time, we're looking at birds. Putting aside the ruthlessness of the method, learning to fly, as a baby bird, requires one to step off the nest, followed by learning how to spread and flap their wings. This can be metaphorical to Iroha's transformation and development, where she is required to leave the comfort and safety of her home and jump into the unknown. As she falls, Iroha sees and equips her cape/cloak, which we can interpret as being her "wings", especially as it spreads feathers around as Iroha puts it on. This sequence ends with a 10/10 landing and a pose that'd bring Hirohiko Araki to a fit of applause.
As you probably have guessed by now, Iroha has a lot of references to birds, and this is most likely referring to, not just their association with freedom and ascension, but transition from a fledgling that is stuck in mom's nest to a mature bird that takes it upon itself to soar the vast and unknown world. Likewise, birds are often seen as "givers", usually in a spiritual sense, being known to drop feathers to those below them, much like Iroha's nature as seen, especially, with Yachiyo, Sana, and Touka. There's a bit more to describe here, but I'll come back to it as we go over Giovanna.
For now, we're going to look at Iroha's character, comparing it to Madoka and contrasting it to Touka's. As mentioned earlier and as pushed heavily through promotions, Memoria, and the various openings we have, Iroha is pretty much intended to be Madoka's spiritual successor in Magia Record. Both follow a similar, pink-oriented color scheme, are adored/have a deep connection with specific individuals (Yachiyo and Homura), and, if we consider Goddess Madoka, are linked to feathers as a symbol of hope for others to receive.
Iroha almost completely represents the opposite qualities of Touka. While Touka is a girl of many merits and is extremely intelligent, Iroha is depicted more modestly. We can assume that she is smart and with her own series of talents, but for a main character, she really doesn't stick out all too much above her fellow cast members. What's also different is the way the two girls use their abilities, where Touka originally uses it for her own self and Iroha for the sake of others.
This is something that is referenced toward the end of Touka's MGS, where it is stated (as the girls are playing a game) that Iroha lacks the ability to command others (due to her being a meek individual) and, instead, excels at biding her time and making her move in conjunction with others. Specifically, Iroha brings up Shogi, a Japanese board game that involves slow and steady movements to ascend your units and, eventually, conquer your opponent--Chess, basically.
Finally, applying the bird, as a symbol, to both girls, we can interpret Iroha as a free bird based on her design that includes a free-fluttering cape (wings) and Touka as a caged bird, given her style of dress and being confined to her hospital room.
Additionally, Touka likens Iroha to the "Beta Pegasi", which, in short, is her way of acknowledging Iroha as being (almost) as bright as herself (Touka being the "Epsilon Pegasi"). The Beta Pegasi is second only to the Epsilon in terms of being the brightest star in the Pegasus constellation. Being similar to that of a bird, Pegasus is a greek entity that takes the form of a flying horse that is associated with the highest form of freedom. That is: the ability to decide and pursue one's own fate. Pegasus is remarkable for bringing to others water springs by striking the land with its hoof, inspiring and encouraging others as a result.
As a counterpart to Yachiyo's, Iroha's Doppel is Giovanna, The Doppel of Silence:
The Doppel of silence. Its form is a cuckoo. The master of this emotion is aware of how pitiful her Doppel is, and refuses to look at it. This Doppel wordlessly wraps around and strangles anything it doesn't want to hear as it continues its search for something to fill the hole in its heart. While it should be calling for someone, it is cowardly and afraid of acknowledging the reality it has concealed, and so it remains, silently covering its ears.
This is where everything comes together. With no offense to Iroha, Giovanna is a really pathetic-looking Doppel. It's "beak" appears to be partially damaged, while its ears are drooped, implying passivity. On the side of its body are what appears to be a small set of wings that don't appear to be very functional for flight, while the rest of its appearance is stitched up and ragged. This is, of course, a source of shame to Iroha, who starts off as self-conscious of her weaknesses, and if you look at the top of Giovanna's head, you'll see what looks like a crown of thorns, which, in Christian religion, was placed on Jesus during his crucifixion as a means to inflict pain, but also mock his image and the messages he delivered. Taking away religious context, if a normal crown were to represent the might and authority, this crown would, instead, be the inverse, representing Iroha's self-deprecation and the pain she feels when referring to her flaws.
As a side-note, I wasn't sure about the object on the back of Iroha's, Nemu's, and Touka's doppel at first, but now I'm more certain it's supposed to be a perch. Curiously enough, it doesn't seem to be present in the anime adaptation, which I'd chalk up to issues with animating it. Given how narrow the area is where Iroha's Doppel manifests, it looks as if it'd get caught on one of the bridges while ascending, which would make a pretty funny blooper reel, thinking about it now. However, the headpiece it sports in the game is also absent from the anime, which I don't really have an explanation for.
Giovanna in-game and as it appears in the anime attacks by wrapping its enemies up in cloth, suffocating it before, in the anime, violently pecking at it. This is a pretty frantic motion due to, as the description states, Giovanna's and, by extension, Iroha's desperation to find Ui, even despite her only having faint memories and visions that indicate Ui's existence.
Taking the form of a cuckoo bird, you might instantly think of a cuckoo clock. If not, then then here you go, I won't apologize for the headache you might get after watching a short compilation of clocks. Given how they pop in/out when the alarm on the clock sounds, you can interpret the makeshift birds as being shy or a bit of cowards. There's also a bit of irony here, as neither cuckoo clocks or cuckoo birds are very silent, rather, males have a very peculiar call that most us are familiar with, while females, instead, sound as if they're chuckling. Fitting for Giovanna, cuckoo birds have a pretty weak appearance, particularly with their small head/beak and exhausted appearance as they shallowly flap their wings when in flight.
One final note is that cuckoo birds are famous as being brood parasites due to mothers infiltrating the nests of, usually, predator birds. Their eggs resemble that of certain species of hawk, allowing mother cuckoo to securely have stronger birds raise their young. This babysitting job, of course, does not pay off for the acting parents, as young cuckoo then push the other eggs/baby birds out of the nest. I'm pretty sure this is a coincidence, but I can't help but compare this nature to Iroha's parents, as it always bothered me how they just up and go on vacation without their teenage kids and, by the end of arc 1, seemed to have accepted Ui and Iroha as being raised in Yachiyo's old and crotchety humble "nest". Again, I'm not going to push this as being relevant to Iroha until it is confirmed that Iroha has a habit of pushing Ui/Felicia/Sana out of bed mid-sleep.
Going back to Night on the Galactic Railroad, Giovanna was a soft-spoken boy who would often remain silent when called on to answer questions during class. At the end of their journey, Campanella gets off the train, implying his passage into heaven. It is then where Giovanna wakes up from his "dream" denying the passage of his best friend until he discovers that Campanella had drowned in order to save a child who had fallen into a river. Much like how Giovanna, the doppel, covers up everything it finds to be unpleasant, Giovanna, the character, at first denied the death of Campanella.
Yachiyo's doppel is referred to the "ticket puncher", referencing the part in the story where Giovanna had acquired a special train ticket that allowed entry to any part of the galaxy. Likewise, the tail of Doppel Campanella resembles that of a ticket puncher, and there's a few things we can take from this. Given the purpose of the tool, it, of course, is used to mark the tickets of those who board the train, confirming their trip. Combined with the tail of a scorpion being one of their primary weapons and their nature as being deceptive, we can take this as Yachiyo's original belief that Iroha befriending her would lead her down a path to ruin. As it turns out, thankfully, this is not the case, and Iroha starting her journey with Yachiyo would lead her to a better life.
Wrapping things up, we have Yachiyo/Iroha (Final Version), which represents the girls' true connectivity. Visually, Iroha and Yachiyo maintain their normal appearance, but both sport an individual wing that, when the girls come together, becomes a pair that embodies protection, love, and harmony and serves as a symbol of hope for those who view it. Their connect, "Let's Become a Circle Together", refers to the concepts of wholeness, perfection, and eternity as it is applied to their bond, while "anima" in their first Magia "Duo Anima" refers to the part of one's mind that works naturally/automatically.
In essence, Yachiyo and Iroha fight together in a way that's beyond anyone's observation. There's no explanation, be it through scientific method or even by first-hand accounts/observation, rather, this synergy is one that is fated between two girls who have come to fully understand and accept each other.
And with that, we reach the end of arc 1's main cast. What started out as a smooth writing ended up being pretty rough, as Reddit somehow didn't save my draft the one time I decided not to type it out on Word first. This lost me over half my progress, hence the delay (I had intended to post this 2 days ago), but no use crying over spilled milk.
Next up is Ui, followed by Hinano and then our lovable Mito Burrito. It really has been a pleasure making these, and I'm always glad to see others as enthusiastic as I am, even if I'm unable to respond to comments (either due to farming in Magia Record/FGO or playing something on console).
