startups #tool #api #vc #leaders #event #opinions #release #opensource #update #hardware #major_players #feature #science #paper #scheduled

OpenAI has introduced GPT-4o, a new model capable of reasoning across text, audio, and video in real time. The model is described as versatile, enjoyable to interact with, and a significant advancement towards more natural human-computer interactions [51]. The model can generate various combinations of audio, text, and image outputs, opening up new possibilities that are still being explored [53]. OpenAI has announced that they are making their new flagship model, GPT-4o, available to everyone for free with certain limitations [16]. OpenAI Plus users will receive up to 5 times higher limits and will have early access to features such as a new macOS desktop app and next-generation voice and video capabilities [17].
AssemblyAI showcases how to utilize Postman to interact with APIs, including their advanced LeMUR functionality. They have released a video demonstrating how to use LLMs on spoken data without the need for coding [2]. Ben, a staff engineer at AssemblyAI, created a video for the AWS This is My Architecture series explaining the architecture behind their AI platform for voice data transcription and analysis [1].
NVIDIA has introduced two regional large language models (LLMs) optimized for Southeast Asian countries: SeaLLM and SEA-LION. These models are optimized for performance and available through the NVIDIA API catalog [12]. NVIDIA AI Developer will showcase how AI on RTX on Windows PCs simplifies development and supports a wide range of fast AI applications at the May 22 demo during #MSBuild [11].
The new short course "Building Multimodal Search and RAG" by Sebastian Witalec focuses on using contrastive learning to train multimodal embedding models for building multimodal search and RAG systems [5]. The message provides insights on building a RAG pipeline using NVIDIA AI LangChain Endpoints. It explains the importance of RAG in enhancing generative AI systems by combining information retrieval with system prompts [10].
Satya Nadella announced expanded investments in France to drive AI innovation and create new economic opportunities across the country [4]. The author from a16z highlights the excitement around fast-growing AI tools in categories like music and web creation. They also mention the potential for non-AI companies to emerge due to the productivity gains enabled by AI [3].
Apriora, a startup from Y Combinator, has raised $2.8M in seed funding for its AI technology that conducts live job interviews with candidates. The AI interviewer, named Alex, aims to streamline the hiring process, widen the talent pool, and provide immediate feedback to employers [13].
Groq Inc will be at the Enterprise Generative AI Summit in San Francisco where Santosh Raghavan will speak on a panel about GenAI infrastructure for cost and energy reduction. They will showcase the world's fastest AI inference technology at their booth [46]. Groq Inc is excited to see developers building projects powered by their technology. Omid Aziz recently added voice capabilities to a mobile app, enabling users to utilize Groq's AI Inference infrastructure at high speed [47].
Cohere now officially supports Java. A short video is available to help users get started with Java on Cohere [36]. Cohere is collaborating with buildwithfern to create an up-to-date and well-documented Java SDK. More language support is expected to be added in the upcoming weeks [38].
Yann LeCun has noted that his proposal for AI safety in his 2022 paper "A Path Towards Autonomous Machine Intelligence" overlaps with the "Objective-Driven AI Architecture" proposal [41]. He has expressed a negative view on contrastive methods, despite proposing them in a NIPS 1993 paper on Siamese nets [42].
Google researchers are actively participating in the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2024) as Champion Sponsors. They are presenting over 30 papers and organizing various events, workshops, and courses [45].

2024.05.14 07:30 Level_Prize_2129 CMV: Someone having prejudiced beliefs doesn’t automatically make them a bad person

When I say “bad person”, I mean that they do not consider justice and respect/consideration of others to be important.
When it comes to causing harm by promoting bigotry, someone is of course a bad person if they are aware of said harm and its impacts. For example, people promoting the ban of abortions despite knowing how it would impact women’s bodily autonomy. I also believe someone is inherently a bad person if they are inciting violence, using slurs or advocating for disowning or mistreatment of children/dependants.
But if someone has been raised to believe and does believe that it is sinful to be gay, that being gay is a choice, and that hell is not only a place that exists but is where gay people will end up, I don’t think that makes them automatically a bad person. If they are promoting homophobia with the intent to shame people into heterosexuality, that makes them a bad person. If they are promoting homophobia from a place of true concern - that they genuinely believe gay people will end up in hell, and they are worried for them because of it - then I don’t consider them to be inherently a bad person, I just consider them to be incorrect.
I also don’t think they’re a bad person if they don’t automatically drop those beliefs, because if something has been drilled into you for your whole life you’re going to believe it and you’re probably not going to abandon those beliefs at the drop of a hat. What would make them a bad person, is if they refused to have those beliefs challenged, and if they refused to adapt those beliefs when presented with new information.
It’s the same with any belief really - if someone is a flat earther, and refuses to accept that all of the evidence points in the direction of the Earth being a globe, then they’re an arse and a bad person if they continue spreading the belief that the Earth is flat.

My (English) family got its wealth from India - in the 18th century, my ancestors owned a lot of land in India and had Indian slaves. I’ve been reading the memoirs of my great grandfather, who was born in 1900, where he wrote about how during his time in the First World War, he fought alongside Indian soldiers as a 16-17 year old.
He‘d been told his whole life similar things to what Churchill believed about Indians (that they are subhuman and incapable of governing themselves), and he’d believed them because that was what he’d been taught. But he wrote that during his time fighting with Indians, he thought of them as brave and loyal men, rather than “savages”.
When he went to Oxford university, he spent more time with the Indian people there - there were few, but enough for him to learn from them more about their culture and beliefs, and he eventually became a Sikh. He originally had very prejudiced and racist beliefs, and not because he was a bad person but because he had been told them his whole life by everyone he looked up to and trusted. He then changed those beliefs when presented with evidence to the contrary.

I would also like to mention that I am autistic, which while it is not directly relevant right now is always relevant at least indirectly as it sheds a light onto why the way I speak is the way it is. If it seems as if I am making a personal attack towards you or anyone else, please remember that is was unintentional.

2024.05.14 07:29 No_Pressure_2337 What is causing these symptoms?

26 female, 200 pounds, 5 months postpartum, diagnosed hypertension, vape, no alcohol.
Currently taking: Labetelol 100mg twice daily, and a water pill (cannot think of name and have a sleeping baby)
So since about 8 weeks gestation I started itching.I have been itching since. It’s mostly at night, and it’s worse on my feet. My other symptoms are dizziness, runny nose, sneezing, headache, brain fog, faintness, feeling my heartbeat, skin crawling, blackness creeping at corner of eyes, shaking, joint pain that comes and goes, frequent UTI, heightened anxiety, overall weakness in joints/muscles.
I have cut out detergent with dyes and fragrance, I have took my BP medicine and water pills, I’ve cut down salt intake, I shower regularly, I’m getting enough sleep when I’m not itching. However I am still ill feeling. I am going to the hospital to take more blood work done as my thyroid hormone is low. However I’ve been going to the clinic over these symptoms for almost 10 months and I cannot live like this anymore as well as my insurance runs out soon. I care for a baby primarily all day feeling like I might faint, and itchy constantly at night causing a loss of sleep sometimes.
I recently had blood work done: (I had my gallbladder removed 2 months ago but all of these symptoms were present before.)

2024.05.14 07:29 MedicalTop2032 Need advice on my workout routine and basically everything else + all my questions

I honestly like workouts where I get to choose, and have a choice in what I do. I usually plan them the day before according to what was sore the last session.
Basically, I choose 1-3 big compound lifts, and do 3-4 sets. Then, I build it from there by adding some isolation and stuff. Sometimes I plan the whole thing beforehand, sometimes I go with the flow and just do what my body feels good doing. For example, deadlifting felt weak as hell today, so I did lighter BB RDLs to hit the muscle in a different way that my body felt better doing.
Here's what ended up happening today for the workout, this one was relatively unplanned:
Workout (this includes actual notes from my workout journal) •Deadlift (135x8, 225x5, 315x3) 》Stopped after 315, although my 1rm should be 420, even 315 felt weak as hell today, so I stopped in the midst of the warmup. •BB RDL (135x10, 185x8, 185x8. Next time I plan to try 200 because this felt do-able) •BB Row (135x8, 155x5, 155x3)
Superset: •BB Press: 85lbsx9, 95lbsx4, 95lbsx3 (I'm weak on this lift because I don't often do it, I usually do more dips and pull-ups for my upper body) •Chinups: 8, 4, 2½, 3
Core: •2 sets of Attempted Planche Tucks. •Decline Crunches: 45lbsx20, (use heavier weight, like 65. 65x15, 65x15)
I didn't do any cardio.
Note: I do track my lifts and reps, and I also write down my workout logs. Took 1.5 minutes of rest.
The issue is, there needs to be more cardio. I guess going on a walk on the off days would be alright, or just everyday as I usually walk around to music, my cardio isn't horrendous. Though sometimes when I sleep badly and stuff I do feel winded. I think this is more due to fatigue than being cardiovascularly done.
I need to recover better tbh, I need to sleep.
Anyway, part of me wants to be able to run at least a mile and a half in like 12 minutes because I am considering seeing about the USAF (National Guard) after community College and I wanna make sure my running is locked in, I can already do the sit-ups and push-ups in the alloted time though I could stand to improve at those as well (wish I had someone to compete with for reps). I'd probably just start with a 10 minute light jog before the workout as a requirement, but I'm afraid that'd take away from my strength, but... well, they don't care about strength.
Also, I have trouble getting enough calories lately so I don't want to burn more with intense running and make it even more of a hassle for myself. It's ironic, I gained 15-20lbs in college, we'll call it the "accidental bulk" as I ate relatively healthfully but every 2 hours, lots of protein, but made mistakes when I gained the ability to drive (which seems to have actually kinda worked for adding some muscle to my frame) and then I cut it quickly. Now I'm eating maintenance. (I'm tracking my macros now to prevent anymore things like that, but I doubt it'll happen again at least for the time being because my appetite stabilized. Also, my maintenance is very high due to the physical activity I get so no need to worry about my health that much, probably.)
Anyway, I don't really know what my goals should be: •Just get stronger and try to nourish my body well, and be a fit young man. I mean, I could do this and totally just see what happens. Hell, maybe in like 10 years my physique will look amazing, or maybe I'll just look fit.) •Try to get shredded and get a six pack. (I kinda have one anyway but I have to flex my core muscles for it to be seen due to a tiny layer of fat over it, but I also kind of don't mind due to the previous goal. I could always do that in a few years when I'm more built up and less confused.) •Bulk and build more muscle. •Try to increase my endurance in calisthenics and running to see if I should actually be in the air force.
Man, I also have so many questions and confusion on goals and the first one just seems the most simple and attainable. Also, I'd be attempting to eat maintenance during that and adjusting it to my activity. (IE: I go back to Community College and move less, so I calculate my maintenance for less calories. That, or I could just keep eating the same and bulk on less activity while still training, I just have so many ideas!)
As you can see, my head is in like 20 different places and I have no idea what to do. Having someone to train me might not be a terrible idea because then I'd have some of this managed for me instead of trying to do it myself, but I don't know if I really need one.
I don't exactly know what to do. Someone recommended me to just keep training for strength and listening to my body because it seems to be the best. But part of me wants to look more asthetic, or something else.
I do actually enjoy at home bodyweight workouts but I use a weighted backpack, not just my pure bodyweight. I really have considered doing more bodyweight stuff for upper body training due to the simplicity of it. Like: weighted/unweighted pull-ups, banded push-ups, dips, chinups, archer pull-ups, core exercises, etc.
I don't know, sorry about endlessly ranting. But, anyway, I do think the first goal is good because if I really try at it, I could probably transition to one of the other goals when I gain more of an idea of what I want to do. I'm too young to really know fully what I want, anyway. Also, what about the routine?
I feel like I actually have a lot of knowledge but need more direction, which... sounds like me.

2024.05.14 07:23 Available-Subject-33 An Honest Critique of Prey (2017)

Prey is a game that's garnered a strong fanbase over the years, with many immersive sim fans hailing it as one of the best games in the subgenre. I remember playing this game on release and being somewhat disappointed by it, but given the recent news of Arkane Austin's closing, I decided to do a replay to see if my experience would be different.
I'm disappointed to say that my experience replaying Prey was not any better, although now I feel that I can articulate why.
Prey falls short of the classic games that it imitates, and unfortunately some of the things that it tries to innovate with it fails to do so meaningfully. This comes down to essentially three critical issues that the game has:
1.) The Story: This is where Prey falls the most short of other immersive sim games. Ken Levine may catch a lot of flack for dumbing down gameplay systems in the BioShock games, but people keep coming back to Rapture to hear Andrew Ryan wax philosophy. They come back to the Von Braun to hear SHODAN. And they come back to Deus Ex for the rich world of conspiracies.
Prey's biggest (and well-presented) twist is over in the first 30 minutes, and while it's not a bad story per say, the game makes it very clear that you can't trust anyone and then from there you just take everything with a grain of salt. But what is really disappointing is that the story wants to borrow from touchstones like The Matrix and Moon without really adding anything to the deeper themes that those films engage with. There are no philosophical themes and memorable characters like BioShock or Deus Ex.
2.) The Combat: Immersive sim games seem to frequently struggle with good enemy design because of the vast array of options that the player has to be able to engage with them. Prey is no exception here, and pretty much all enemies from the Phantoms on up are frustrating to fight. Prey's combat never stops feeling sticky and unwieldy, and the Typhon powers never feel powerful enough to give you that sense of eventually becoming death on two legs that you get from other immersive sim games. There's no good flow, and I found that most combat encounters are determined by whether or not you have the right gear going into the fight rather than any amount of tactical or reflexive skill.
Now you could argue that that's an intention of the game's design, but if the designers really wanted to deemphasize moment-to-moment combat, then they should have added in meaningful stealth mechanics. This would have been especially useful in light of the other major gameplay issue, which leads me to point #3...
3.) Enemy Behavior: Prey is really fucking proud of its Mimics. They were all over the promotional campaign, and after playing I can't for the life of me understand why. Yeah, they're unique, but they're not fun to fight and they stop being a threat after the first 2 hours. After that, they become annoying.
Speaking of annoying, the Nightmare system is... interesting. The Nightmare is a difficult enemy to fight, but the fact that it (and most other enemies) infinitely respawns, while resources don't, artificially increases the difficulty and discourages revisiting areas, which is kind of against the point of having a game designed around a large interconnected space station.

That said, the game's art direction is still breathtaking, and the outrageous attention to detail across Talos I is staggering. The zero gravity space sequences are really unique and cool. And I actually thought the game was pretty good at being scary, with the enemies' undefinable shapes and jumpy movements being unnerving as hell (especially the Poltergeist, Weaver, and Nightmare).
Ultimately though, the gameplay never felt quite right and the story didn't leave me with much to remember. While I don't think that it's worthy of being held up with some of the classic immersive sim games, it is still a decent, perhaps 6/10 game in its own right.
What baffles me though is why Prey has received such a glowing reappraisal in recent years, while I don't see the same level of affection for games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution/Mankind Divided; which while not perfect, are much better immersive sims and better games all around.

The project includes 120 units, with a mix of affordable units for households earning between 30% and 80% of the area median income, including 20 rapid rehousing units. The Developer faced a $36 million funding gap due to high construction costs and insufficient state funding. To address this gap, they proposed securing tax credits and bond financing, modifying project plans to reduce costs, adjusting unit income levels, and adding units for intellectually and developmentally disabled persons to qualify for additional County funding. Additionally, to defer more of the cost, staff is recommending council approve a temporary street closure on Bryant Street during construction and a city contribution of $5 million.
6.2: Potential Revenue Measure for 2024 General Election Ballot The Council is considering a revenue measure for the November 2024 ballot to improve infrastructure, fund affordable housing, and mitigate climate change. The Revenue Measure Ad Hoc Sub-Committee recommended a property transfer tax initiative based on polling results showing initial support above 60%. This tax would apply to property sales over $5 million, raising approximately $9.5 million annually for the City.
6.3: AB 481 Military Equipment Annual Report and Policy Adoption As part of police reform efforts, AB 481 aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and oversight regarding the funding, acquisition, or use of military equipment by state or local government officials. Law enforcement agencies are required to prepare an annual military equipment report and hold at least one community-engagement meeting for public discussion. The bill also mandates that local agencies must review and renew the ordinance and report at a regular meeting of the City Council.
If you have any questions or comments about the upcoming meeting, please email me at emily.ramos@mountainview.gov. You can also email the entire council at city.council@mountainview.gov.

2024.05.14 07:18 _jamesbaxter Why did my therapist do this?

Hello. I am an adult survivor of child neglect and abuse. Like many of us, I had no idea how bad what I was experiencing was at the time it was happening.
Part of the abuse was scapegoating and playing the role of identified patient. I was put in therapy around 8/9 years old due to “behavioral issues” which I now understand was normal behavior for a neglected and abused child, but my parents were of the mindset that there was something horribly wrong with me and took me from doctor to doctor to do every possible test because my parents were not satisfied that the evaluations I had were always pretty much inconclusive. I’ve even looked back at the notes I could get from a therapist I saw in high school and they paint a portrait of a generally normal kid who was unhappy because of instability at home.
Now here is my question: when I was somewhere between 9 and 12 years old, I saw a child psychologist/psychiatrist (she did therapy and not strictly meds) for 2 years (she was a med resident) who just played card games with me every session. I’m sure there was some minimal dialogue sometimes maybe for the first 5 minutes, but often she just asked me what game I wanted to play and then we played uno or other similar games for an hour. I loved this therapist, but I have no idea why she took this approach.
Part of me asking is I’m not sure if my therapists knew that I was being neglected and abused? The only thing I can think of is perhaps that therapist just wanted to give me that hour of respite and pleasant interaction with an adult, but that would mean she knew, no? I’m bewildered why it was never reported, I had teachers that I know for a fact knew because they pulled me out of class to ask me about things at home.

2024.05.14 07:14 ScholarGrade Juniors - NOW is the time to start brainstorming essays

There have been an increasing number of juniors visiting this sub asking for advice about writing essays. Below are some tips and advice for making your essay stand out as excellent. Feel free to ask questions because I will answer every single question in the comments.
I know from experience that many of you are struggling to identify a good topic for your essay. Conventional wisdom says to start by brainstorming a list of potential topics, and chances are, you have already started a mental list of ideas. You might think you only have a few choices for topics, based on your activities or experiences, or essay examples you read, or the rough draft you already started (or worse, that GPT started...). I advise, however, that you put down your list of topics and back away from it. Forget that exists for a moment. Seriously - thinking about this initial list tethers you to certain ideas that might not actually be your best options.
Now you can begin brainstorming with a clean slate.
Start with thinking about what you want to show in your entire application, not just one essay. Every single component in your app has one purpose – to tell more about YOU. Filling out the rest of the application by rote and focusing solely on the essay is short-sighted and will leave so much potential untapped in your application.

It's About You. Tell Your Story - And Be The Protagonist

An admissions officer’s goal is to understand you fully, in the context of your background and the rest of the applicant pool. They will begin this with assessing your academic abilities and potential. Then they will evaluate how you will fit into the student body they’re trying to curate. All of this can be somewhat broad and diverse and touch on several institutional goals. But they will dig deep to find out what each applicant is like, what your core values and motivations are, what kind of student you will be, how you will contribute to the vibrant and intellectual campus community they’re building, etc.
Your goal with essay brainstorming is to ascertain how to powerfully tell your story in a manner that will fit these criteria. The entirety of your application (again, not just one essay) aims to showcase your abilities, qualifications, and uncommon attributes as a person in a positive way. Before you begin outlining or writing your application, you must determine what is unique about you that will stand out to an admissions panel. All students are truly unique. Not one other student has the same combination of life experiences, personality, passions, or goals as you do. Your job in your application is to frame your unique personal attributes in a positive and compelling way. How will you fit on campus? What personal qualities, strengths, core values, talents, or different perspectives do you bring to the table? What stories, deeper motivations/beliefs, or formative experiences can you use to illustrate all of this?
It is always helpful to start with some soul-searching or self-examination. You might not immediately know what you want to share about yourself. It’s not a simple task to decide how to summarize your whole life and being in a powerful and eloquent way on your application. Introspection prior to starting your application takes additional time and effort rather than jumping straight into your first draft. But it is also a valuable method to start writing a winning application that stands out from the stack.
You'll see the advice everywhere that all essay prompts are really about the same thing - you. The goal of each essay then is to showcase who you are, what matters to you, and how you think. I guarantee if you're on this sub enough, you'll hear the advice to "show, don't tell" when writing about yourself. But what does this mean really, and how do you do it well? How do you even get started on an essay that does this?

Introspection Questions

It’s often easiest to start thinking in terms of superlatives, especially those related to personal insights -- what are the most meaningful things about you, and what do you value the most? Here is a list of questions to help you brainstorm broadly before you narrow down your focus for writing:
I have a free introspection worksheet with over 100 questions like this designed to help you find ideas worth exploring in your essays. You can find it on the A2C Discord or download it directly here.

Find Your Story And Arc

Think of a small anecdote or story from your life that you could share that serves as a microcosm of who you are and what is important to you. It will massively help you narrow this down and find a gem of a story if you first start by thinking about your application arc or theme. This is the one-phrase summary of your entire application. It could be "brilliant entrepreneur who started her own successful business" or "talented athlete who wants to study economics and finance as they pertain to sports", or even "avid baker whose hobby sparked an interest in chemistry". It doesn't have to be related to your intended major, but it can help your arc be stronger and clearer if it is.
Once you have an arc determined and a story to share, think about what you want that story to say about you. This is where it can help to think of this as something you would share on a date - what impression does it make about you to the reader? Once you know this, start showing, not telling this attribute of yourself through your story. For example, instead of saying that you're compassionate toward others, you show an example of a time you were compassionate, then elaborate on why, and what it means to you.

Essay Brainstorming Techniques

If you are having trouble finding a story, or simply have writer’s block once you have picked your topic, here are some ideas to get your juices flowing:

Why Essays Matter

Here's the thing a lot of people don't realize about college admission: it's not an award for being the smartest, most accomplished, or most impressive. It's an invitation to join a community. Far too many students think that if they can just show that they're smart enough, they'll get in. Yale even says right on their admissions website that 75% of their applicants are academically qualified to succeed at Yale. But only ~4% are getting in. That should tell you that they're looking for more than just top tier test scores and grades. To be perfectly clear, you will need top tier grades and (optionally) test scores to show that you're qualified, and the vast majority of my students come to me with this part already in the bank. But what sets the admits apart? It's personal insight - sharing who you are, how you think, what matters to you, and how you engage community. You can't just say "/IAmVerySmart, please admit me," or even "I did a cool thing guys! Isn't that neat!" You need to go deeper and show them your core values, personal strengths, motivations, aspirations, character traits, foundational beliefs, personality, etc. And you need to do it in a charming, winsome way that makes them like you and want to invite you to join their community.
So how do I get students to do this? All of my students complete that introspection worksheet. We go through it and find the stories, examples, anecdotes, conversations, memories, relationships, and other things from their life that will help us craft a strong and personally insightful narrative. We also make lists of the values, strengths, and key personal qualities we want to showcase. Once we have some topics, outlines, abstracts, or rough drafts, we talk about which stories to tell where, how to tell them well, and what details to include to present the best they have to offer. Then we refine, edit, polish, and enhance over and over until the story sings, but more importantly shows their heart and soul. We also go through all the other application components to ensure consistency, quality, and distinctiveness.
Here's why this works so well: at most highly selective colleges there is a primary reader (or 2-3) who will review everything first and then present it to the admissions committee, who then votes on whether to admit you. That presentation typically goes one of three ways:
  1. Total enthusiasm, energy, and excitement. They strongly advocate for admission and paint a clear picture of how you will contribute to their goals and community. Everyone in the room picks up on that energy and is leaning forward in their chairs, looking for reasons to admit you. This is quite rare, generally less than 5 out of every 100 applications, even among those which are "fully qualified." When you do this right, you show depth, meaning, and valuable personal insights so the reviewer is learning about who you are and how you might engage the community they're curating. You come alive off the page as a person, not just another file.
  2. Business as usual. You're another great applicant in a pile of great applicants. They share a basic review of the facts, your profile, stats, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Maybe someone on the committee finds something they love, and they really push for admission. More likely, not and you get deferred/waitlisted even though there wasn't anything "wrong" with your application. They just didn't love you enough to commit.
  3. "Here's a stack of 20 applications that I didn't find all that compelling, so we won't present them individually, but you guys are the committee and you make the decisions. So let me know if there are any you want to talk about." In this case, unless there's a letter of endorsement from an athletics coach or your last name matches several buildings on campus, you're probably not getting additional consideration, much less admission. They will regret to inform you.
Everything we're doing is designed to help them get to know themselves, present the best they have to offer, and land in that first group. Having top tier essays is the single best way to get there. Get started on brainstorming in the next few weeks so you'll have time to get a few essays completed over the summer.

2024.05.14 07:11 Diligent_Ad2380 How to be a horrible manifester

Before anyone gets mad at me for writing this post, I'll say this; the point of this post is not what you think it is, it's not to discourage you or belittle you. It's quite the opposite actually, and you'll see it reading this post.
So here is a tongue-in-cheek, guide on how to be a terrible manifester, using the principles of Neville Goddard's teachings:
Step 1: Dwell Obsessively on What You Don't Want
If you want to fail miserably at manifesting your desires, the first crucial step is to hyperfocus on what you currently lack or don't want in your reality. Spend all your waking hours fixating on your limitations, inadequacies, and unfulfilled wishes. Replay mental movies of all your disappointments, losses, and perceived injustices on a continuous loop. The more you saturate your consciousness with thoughts and feelings of lack, the better. This lays the perfect foundation for ensuring that the unwanted circumstances persist indefinitely.
Step 2: Entertain a Perpetual State of Doubt and Uncertainty
Absolute faith in your ability to manifest is kryptonite for bad manifestors. Thus, you must diligently undermine any stirrings of belief by constantly questioning whether you truly deserve your heart's desires or possess the necessary skills to actualize them. Relentlessly poke holes in any evidence that conflicts with your doubts. Tell yourself that manifesting is only for special people, not regular folk like you. The more unworthy and incapable you feel, the less power you grant your fantastic reality-molding imagination.
Step 3: React Drastically to Every Contrary Appearance
The road to failed manifestation is paved with obsessive reaction to every temporary appearance that seems to contradict your intended desire. Approach each setback as an apocalyptic, permanent condition rather than a natural ebb in the cycle of periodic data fluctuations. Treating each contrary sight as an impassable roadblock prevents you from persisting through the requisite periods of mental re-patterning. The more derailed you become at the first sign of turmoil, the less traction you allow your new manifestations to gain.
Step 4: Accumulate an Endless Stream of Rationalizations
To undermine your creative powers entirely, make sure to develop an endless reservoir of rationalizations as to why you cannot manifest your wishes. Tenaciously cling to carefully-curated reasons - whether based on your personal history, perceived limitations, societal circumstances, or universal laws - that justify your inability to favorably reshape your world. The more unbudgeable your rebuttals against possibility become, the more you stunt the transformative influx of creative energies.
Step 5: Dismiss Any Encouragement or Clashing Perspectives
Should you receive inspiration or witness someone else's manifestation success, immediately insulate yourself by invalidating or explaining away their example. Undermine the plausibility of their results through meticulous deconstruction of their methods, advantages, or circumstances that you allegedly lack. Doggedly reject any acceptance of your own empowered nature so as to uphold your identity as an impotent dreamer. Doing so sustains the mentality that makes manifesting impossible.
Step 6: Give Up at the First Sign of Turbulence
The pivotal juncture in any creator's journey is the point when previously unseen patterns erupt into their reality. This is your signal to cease and desist all efforts if you wish to seal your fate as an ineffectual dreamer. Treat the inevitable chaos and creative friction produced during gestation periods as cosmic signs that you've failed. Relinquish your mental reins at this first testing point, slipping comfortably back into your well-worn reality trail. The more promptly you demur, the less ground your new manifestation can gain.
Step 7: Judge Your Process and Results Incessantly
While focusing on judging each step of your manifestation process is generally frowned upon, as a skilled failed manifestor, you should judge constantly and overanalyze every minute aspect. Ceaselessly track, scrutinize, and lament any lack of moment-to-moment physical results as evidence of your inadequacy. Neglect to appreciate the creative insights and realizations unfolding along your journey. The more you treat manifestation as a sterile input/output process, the less aware you become of the profound interior shifts preparing your new world.
Step 8: Seek the Path of Utmost Struggle and Complexity
Any sane person will advise you to follow the path of least resistance - the Royal Road of effortless, delightful, creativity. Clearly, as an aspirant of anti-manifesting, you must listen to the advice of these courses and manifestation gurus and you must do the opposite by choosing the most arduous, complex approaches requiring supreme effort and metaphysical acrobatics. Dismiss all simple, organic processes in favor of elaborate rituals, formulae, and visualizing regimens that leave you physically and mentally depleted. The more you mystify manifesting into an ascetic gauntlet, the more elusive your desired results become.
Step 9: Compare Everything to Societal Norms and Consensus
Reality creation occurs most potently at the scale of personal consciousness. However, to derail your manifestations entirely, you must routinely defer to cultural mass beliefs and assumptions about what is possible or permitted. Undermine any deviations from the conventional by scrutinizing their divergence from commonly accepted norms. Doubt anything overreaching beyond the safe confines of popular consensus realities. The more you validate society's belief codes over your own visionary impulses, the more you extinguish your outrageous generative capacities.
Step 10: Continually Postpone Taking Any Decisive Actions
The culmination of any manifestation process necessitates embodying the state you wish to realize more fully through corresponding actions. To guarantee manifestation failure, you must perpetually delay or avoid taking any decisive steps that could reshape your world accordingly. Endlesslyplan and prepare while refusing to commit wholeheartedly through outer behavior changes. The more inertia you cultivate through infinite contemplation rather than execution, the more you suffocate the vitality required for your visions to materialize.

NATO Military Chief on How Countries Can Prepare for War, a Second Trump Presidency and More
Published on Youtube last week, the following 35 minute video interviews Rob Bauer (no relation lolz), NATO's top military officer.
Around the 8 minute mark, Bauer notes that for the last 30 years we have been imagining the world as we'd like it to be - now we must see the world for what it truly is - a world overrun with giant and puny consumers, bitter geopolitical rivalries and an increasingly uncertain future.
Bauer also mentions the concerns growing in the west over critical resources for advanced/green technology. China and her "allies" control most rare earths and they do a ton of material processing as well (Zeihan has talked about this at some length). This will absolutely lead to conflict with higher and higher stakes - here Bauer is forecasting 5 to 10 years before the new cold war starts to warm up as fast as the Earth...

2024.05.14 07:10 FirstThru How do I (30M) progress this potential relationship with the woman (30F) I am talking to?

There is more to it than the title. I was engaged to be married to a woman I was with for almost four years. In our last year together, she pretty much treated me like a ghost, ignoring messages, not wanting to go on dates, and the last straw was blocking me on social media. I did everything to keep the relationship alive, working long hours, going to visit her in her city every month, trying to talk to her, but she kept pushing me away. Eventually our last conversation was over the phone, at night, and her last words to me were "I don't love you now," "I am seeing someone else," and "I need you to back off." This was after Valentine’s Day, after a hard day of work, after I sent her a valentine gift. I was devastated and pretty much cursed out God, blamed the world, blamed myself for the relationship ending after I did everything I could to keep it. To this day I have doubt I am worthy to be a child of God, that I failed my family, I failed myself, and I failed at life. I was severely depressed for a long time. I am still depressed, but I have a better handle on it now.
A few months after the relationship ended, I have mixed feelings of love and hate towards my ex. I cannot forgive her, no matter how hard I tried. I have tried deeply and daily to forgive her, but I do not believe I can. I have not spoken to her since Feb 2023. I have blocked her on all social media. The only way she can contact me is by email, letter, or by going to my parents’ home. I have already told myself, if she ever wants to talk to me, it must be in person, no other way. I will not talk to people solely through social media anymore, it must be face to face or on an actual voice call (no voice messages) if we live in the same city.
In June 2023, I move to China and am working as an English teacher. I wanted to get far away from the past and I did. My family are supportive of my decision.
In July 2023, I met this sweet and intelligent woman through a language exchange app. We simply wanted to help each other practice English, Spanish, and Chinese. After a week or so she asked to have dinner with me as friends and I thought nothing of it. I was still recovering from the last relationship and wanted nothing to do with a new one. She chose a cool restaurant, had a bar, Mexican food, and great drinks. I expected the meetup to be about 30 minutes. It ended up being 3 hours. We had no idea that time flew quickly. The conversation we had was fun. The day we had dinner was the last day I was staying in her city, I had to move to another Chinese city in China for work. I never stopped thinking about her.
Few months pass by and its December 2023. I told myself “Screw it." I went online and ordered a bouquet of flowers to be delivered to her home. Once the order was made, I thought nothing of it and continued my routines for the next few days. The flowers were going to be delivered on Christmas. Christmas is not a big holiday in China. I got anxious as the day got closer. I thought “what am I doing? I only met her once in person, we are language partners, I live in a different city, she and I are full time workers… blah blah blah.” At this point there was nothing I could do; I could not cancel the order. Christmas day comes, its dinner time, I am chilling with other foreigners, and I got a notification from the woman saying, “thank you for the flowers, they are beautiful.” I asked if we could chat, and she said of course. I do not know what came over me, I was scared but I wanted to be honest with her.
She told me “This is not a gift for a friend.” I responded in honesty “I have been thinking about you since the night we had dinner and I want to know if you could give me the chance to impress you and become your partner.” She said, “I had been waiting for you to do that, I do not know if it is romantic, but I do like you and would like to know you more.” This was a great feeling. I was happy and thankful. I thanked God and myself for doing it.
We met up a few weeks ago in her city and we had a wonderful dinner, we spent the entire day together, talking, walking, exchanging ideas, enjoying each other’s company. We even challenged each other to be healthier. Next time I see her, I must do 30 pushups and she has to do 1 pushup (not fair, but if I win, she has to ride a bike with me around a park). We have given each other cute nicknames; she calls me “Winnie the Pooh” and I call her “Honey.” She asked me why I call her “Honey” and I told her because, “Winnie the Pooh likes Honey.”
We kept our language exchange schedule, and we understand that we are both busy with work and taking this relationship slow is good for us. She has told me multiple times that she wants me in her city. Whether she wants me or not, I have always planned to go back to that city. The weather is nice, there are more things to do, it’s closer to other major cities.
There are so many times I want to talk to her, but the fear and past experiences shake me to the core. I TRULY want to talk to her, about anything. Hearing and listening to her speak about her passions and hobbies is joyous to me. We always exchange ideas in our weekly exchanges. I do not want to say, “I love her,” I am too scared to say that. However, I want her as my girlfriend. I just do not know what to do to overcome this fear and progress our relationship further.
Note: If anyone is wondering, yes, she is Chinese. I am American but my appearance is Hispanic.

2024.05.14 07:05 Draft-Formal Odd request

I know this may see kind of odd, but I have an English paper on subcultures and am doing it on Mormons. One of the requirements for this is to do an "interview" with someone who is currently or used to be apart of it. I was wondering if any of you would be interested in doing this. It wouldn't last long it would just be a normal text convo. If you'd be willing to please let me know quickly, it's time sensitive as I may or may not have procrastinated till the last minute. Thanks you.

2024.05.14 06:58 EnglishmanInHell tokyo resident here, visiting osaka

made a Tennoji osaka apartment booking off booking.com the other day. got there, decent place, separate shower toilet, deep bath, sat in the room and drank beer. browsed the intraweb and my recent online credit card statement. there were two new charges from another major travel booking site, let’s call it Ted, for about the same price give or take a few yen that I paid for the tennoji spot. hadn’t used Ted in 5 months though. it set off fire bells. I moved to nara on another booking.com booking in the meantime. it was a typical business hotel with no separate shower toilet. the next morning a third payment from Ted came through. I found Ted’s complaints site off Reddit. You can usually find stuff like this quicker on Reddit than anywhere else off the net. Nice one for that, Reddit 👍 I mailed Ted and within minutes I got semi-automatic shitty responses from Jill and Pradat and John asking for my Ted booking number, well duh, there’s no fucking Ted booking number that’s why I’m belling you guys. I got off the iPad, pulled a hundred grand out from the nearest atm and cancelled my credit card. it started raining hard ( yesterday ) grim cold May rain. I called up SMBC, my bank. they said a new card wouldn’t be sent automatically to my address after I cancelled which is contrary to what they said on the internet when I did it. I really need a card asap. so I went to nara SMBC branch in the pissing rain. a middle-aged broad at the door, with a mask on and eyes that communicated she’d dealt with too much of life’s shit already said credit cards and cc fraud weren’t their problem. I went back to the business hotel with no separate shower toilet and called SMBC again, spoke to a helpful lady, then went back to nara SMBC at her instruction in the pissing rain. Nara got on the boat this time and a new card is being sent to my Tokyo address as we speak. one hopes. the next day a nice lady from the SMBC fraud department came through on the phone with a very clear and affirmative voice.. perfect English, straight to the point, syrupy voice, intelligent, some bonafide jason borne executive clearance on my part. she said, “we will cancel these charges, don’t be in any doubt about that. but you won’t be able to use your TED account again, is that ok ?” “Yes that’s more than fine.” “Ok good, that’s all for now then,” she said, “goodbye. “
It wasn’t even Ted’s fault, it’s some advanced scamming shit crawling through our web at pace so do be careful , again,

2024.05.14 06:57 anon200409 My (f19) husband (m19) left but wants to know if we can fix things in the future. What do I do?

This is going to be a long one so heads up.
A bit of back story; I started dating my husband when I was 15. I chased this boy thorugh hell and back just to get a chance. Problems between us were immediate but didn't seem significant at the time. A few months into our relationship he had an adult "friend" that was telling him he needed to get control of me or "put me in my place" (referencing he should hit me). He didn't but the ego it gave him was a hard battel. 8 months into our relationship my mother forced me to move states because I was starting the process of emancipation and she didn't like that. I was still going through with it, it was just a buffer. 2 weeks after I left he was flirting with my friends. We were on and off for 3 months long distance before I said I had enough. When my emancipation was complete (6 months after I moved and about 3 months after we officially split) I let him know because we were still in touch. It was a few days after that he decided he wanted to try things again and came to me. Just a few days of being with me he decided he wanted to go home, with or without me. I reluctantly agreed to go with him even though I was comfortable where I was. We stayed in a trailer for months in the snow with no power or heat but I toughed it out. Eventually we moved in with his family. During that time he broke up with me multiple times to mess aground with other girls. We ended up moving again and he would be gone all the time hanging out with his friends. There were nights I would beg him, crying, for him to just come home and he would refuse We ended up moving again and spent some time with my family (i was 17). 3 days in he called his mom to have someone pick him up. He regretted it and I went and picked him up and brought him back. A few months after that he decided to leave again. 3 days later I was feeling weird. I just had an odd feeling, I didn't miss my period or anything but I had a friend get me a pregnancy test anyway. It came out positive. I didn't want kids, I never did. But I decided to keep the baby because he wanted to. He promised a better life. So he comes and picks me up and we move back in with his family. Everything was going great. Then I miscarried. After the miscarriage he was upset, he was really excited about having a kid. We talk about it and he talked me into trying for one on purpose, his family agreed with this. He promised to drop the weed, drop the beer, get a job and work his ass off for us. That never really happened. So here I am 17, and 5 months pregnant, he has 3 tall cans of beer in his system and starts being an ass. We get into it and he lays his hands on me. I locked him out of the room that night. So he finally drops the alcohol for good. We end up moving again. We got married the day I turned 18 because of his religious family. We fought about the weed and he "quit". But in reality he was just doing it behind my back. He would get mad at me for calling people out on their fake service dogs (I have a service dog and the fakes put me at great risk). He held a job for a really long time, making good money, and spoiling the shit out of me. Eventually we argue about the weed again. I almost left but he said he wouldn't be doing it anymore. Then again we argue about the weed, this time I agree to let him have dab carts. 2 a week. He ended up with between 3-5 a week. Things were really good for a long time after that.
Keep in mind everything I listed was not the entire relationship. Between all these bad moments there are lots of great ones. I have thousands of happy pictures and videos of us.
Now to recently. We moved back to our hometown. He spent a lot of time hanging out with his buddies and leaving me with the baby. He started smoking flower again and had the sudden urge to drink again. I was alone 90% of the time. So where do I go? I have a boy best friend that has been through hell and back with me since the first day of middle school. So I spent a lot of time hanging out with him while my husband was off fucking around like a child. Then the weird questions came in. "Are you doing anything with him while I'm gone?" "Your not cheating on me right?" Ect. No I wasn't. About a week ago I told my bsf I was picking him up from work. While I was in the parking lot waiting my husband calls insiting I pick him up first. I told him no because I didn't have room in the car for both and I was already there waiting. Well that started this whole fit about how asking him to wait 10 minutes was prioritizing my bsf over my husband. Eventually we get to my friends house, and my husband was waiting for us. He was just talking shit and being an ass for 20 minutes before he decided to leave in MY CAR. We argue over text for a while and then he tells me he's done with me. Fine. I give up. I don't care anymore. Then 30 minutes later he's accusing me of cheating with my bsf. He has told all his friends and family that I'm a hoe (my body count is 2 including him and the other one is NOT my bsf). My bsf has been doing his best to take care of me and help me out. Feeding me, taking over the baby, putting gas in my car, letting me stay the night. He's been a life saver for me.
Now it's a week later and he's asking if there is a chance we can work things out in the future... I love him I really do. He has lots of issues tho but so do I. My BPD makes me hard to handle sometimes as do my other mental and health problems.
I'm sure I know what the answer is already but what do I do? I'm a mess.

2024.05.14 06:51 LeftLiner My review: HW3 - An okay game but the worst HW game ever.

Homeworld 3 is on track to becoming my least favorite HW game. Is it terrible? No. Is it great? Also no. Is it *good*? Eeeh... also no, not really. But it's also not bad. It's very mid.
Homeworld 3 *definitely* does not have the original’s gripping story or sense of mystery and player freedom.
It also does not have Cataclysm’s incredibly rewarding rags-to-riches feeling.
It also also does not have Homeworld 2’s polished gameplay.
And it also does not have Desert’s of Kharak fresh new take on the genre and franchise.
It’s okay. That’s about it.
Visuals and UI
It's stunningly beautiful, like every HW game. Space is gorgeous, filled with visual spectacle and lovingly detailed ships and environments (though frankly, space battles in this game are visually far less impressive than any previous installment). I'm not a sound guy so I have very little to say except that for my money the sound design is actually more impressive than the graphics. Everything from explosions to weapon effects to the background chatter sounds lovely.
UI is clunky as hell, I'm about six hours in and I'm still not friends with the camera and I can never orient myself quickly. Ships often feel like they're not responding to orders – I might be wrong, but I find myself going back to double-check that I definitely ordered those corvettes to guard that frigate etc. It feels much more micro-managey than previous installments.
Gameplay
Lots of features introduced in HW2 are gone: Fighters and corvettes no longer belong to squads, you’re back to each fighter being an individual unit. Modules are gone – you don’t build certain types of sensors or research modules or cloaks or fire control modules etc. I’ve not played around with carriers much yet but it seems they also come out of the construction bay completely finished, without any additions you can make, unlike in HW2 where you could specialize them. If there is an equivalent to the Research Module from HW1 or any other way to affect research speed or to give you more options the game hasn't introduced it yet (I'm on mission 8).
The number of units in the game also seems a little disappointing. I've unlocked three types of fighters, four types of frigates and at least one capital ship but only one type of corvette? Leads me to believe there only is one type, which would be very disappointing.
Minor detail but the ship design is for the most part really dull, too. Even quite closely zoomed in it's hard to distinguish one ship from another - their silhouettes just blend together.
In short, HW3 has less choices you can make and much more to keep you constantly busy.
The game takes a lot of liberties with player agency: They've opted to remove the option to let you decide when you’re done with one level and proceed to the next. Unlike previous games (at least unlike HW1 and Cata) once you complete the last mission objective you enter a cutscene and the level ends. No time to gather resources or replace casualties taken.
One of the missions also takes a break for the Mothership to be repaired off-screen and when you are put back into control the game gives you a bunch of mine-laying corvettes, defense turrets and a carrier - units you've not researched, not built and that the game decided you should have for the next mission. The mission after that provides you with a small fleet of ships to conduct a raid – you have no hand in selecting these ships, they’re not taken from your own fleet, they’re just magicked into existence because the game decided you needed them for the story. I've been told there's a custom difficulty setting that changes this - why in the hell you make that setting the default is beyond me.
Disappointing for a game series that used to let you build your own fleet more or less uninstructed and make it work (or not) on your own terms.
In 1998 this gameplay was fine (although better executed) and in 2003 the sequel gave it a much-needed polish that honestly holds up OK to this day, imo. But HW3 has regressed back to what HW1 did in ’98 and then stripped off some of the polish so beware this plays like a very dated game.
Story
The story is a bit messy - though this isn't entirely its fault. HW2 already made a mess of the story of this world. The motivation for you being in control of *another* mothership and once again being given a mighty starting host of a Resource Collector and five scouts despite the Hiigarans by now being major galactic player is no more or less ham-fisted than it was in HW2. HW2 was the game who leaned fully into mysticism and Chosen One prophecies and muddled up the genre, can't really blame HW3 for not course-correcting.
However the game is *way* too in love with exposition dumping. One mission involves navigating the Mothership through an asteroid field and am not kidding when I say that playing through the mission only took marginally longer than the cutscene once I reached the end. It was five minutes if not more. The cutscenes are gorgeous and the voice acting great, but they end up becoming more distracting than rewarding. They also do not go at all for the classic Homeworld look, nor do they attempt for a twist on them like Deserts of Kharak; they’re just pre-rendered full-on cutscenes with people carrying out full conversations to advance the plot.
Honestly I half-expected for there to be a dialogue wheel after a while. The plot is fairly unsurprising so far. Everything is just very predictable and uninspired.
The story focuses on Imogen S'Jet, a descendant of Karan S'Jet. I didn't mind this switch in narrative to follow single individuals so clearly in Deserts of Kharak because that game felt so different overall (in a good way, I very much enjoyed DoK); a prequel not set in space exploring Kushan society rather than Hiigaran society like Cata did. But in a full-blown 'proper' Homeworld game I much prefer the inner workings of the ships to be a little more mysterious and up to the imagination, and for the story to follow the epic tale of *a people*, not of *persons*.
Conclusion
I backed this game on Fig years ago and I’m glad I did – if I’d paid €59 for it now and gotten it in the state it’s in I’d have felt cheated. I can’t comment on the Multiplayer or the War Mode – I only really play HW for the Singleplayer Campaigns.
Fans of Homeworld *might* enjoy it if they go in with low expectations. New players will probably find this game enjoyable enough, if a little basic and clunky to play. Neither should pay €59 for it, though.
Presentation - stunning. Gameplay – disappointing. Story - meh. 6/10

2024.05.14 06:46 AsleepChemist1199 My MA experience from start to finish

Hey! I have been spending a lot of time in this subreddit reading other people’s experiences to comfort myself through my own abortion process, and I wanted to share my story for any other uterus-havers out there that were in the same boat as me and need a little reassurance and honesty about the process. For reference, I’m 19F and 5’4/115lbs, and I’ve been with my partner (20M) for almost three years.
I took a pregnancy test on the 40th day of my cycle (so I was five weeks four days along, my period was a week and a half late) and got a very quick positive result. I had a suspicion that I was pregnant because I had some weird spotting in the middle of my cycle and the week my period was supposed to start (no clotting), odd cramps, random nausea from strong smells, needing to pee way more than usual, random sadness and aggression from ovulation onward, extreme breast swelling and sensitivity (they were agonizing to even touch) and an ever so slight bloat that appeared right around ovulation and never really went down. I live in a southern state and knew that going in for procedure was going to be a goat rope despite the fact that I live in a decently sized city- I knew that if I was pregnant I wanted to have the medical abortion at home with my partner.
I ordered pills from AidAccess and it couldn’t have been any simpler, all I had to do was fill out a short survey and they guided me through email on how to pay for the pills. They were delivered about three days after I ordered them in an unmarked mail envelope with directions on how to use them inside. I ordered them a few days before I took the test because I was pretty confident it was going to be positive. They sent me 1 Mifepristone and 12 Misoprostol.
I took the test on a Friday night and told my partner I was pregnant, and he insisted I take another test just to be sure before I took the medication. Once again, another strong positive. At 9pm that night I took 800mg of Motrin (4 pills) and ate a bag of microwave popcorn and drank some water so I’d have something on my stomach. At 9:30 I took the Mifepristone orally and immediately inserted 4 Misoprostol vaginally- I’m terrified of throwing up and told my partner that if we had to get medical help to make sure there weren’t any remnants of the pills left inside. I know it’s NOT OPTIMAL to take the Miso at the same time as the Mife, but it was Easter weekend and I couldn’t be prolonging this process to when I would be going back to my extremely Christian and conservative parents’ house for the holiday.
I was extremely terrified and shaking when I got back into bed with my partner, and he rubbed my stomach to calm me down and put on a movie as a distraction. After about an hour I felt some light cramping and discomfort but nothing serious. At 12:30am, I inserted the next 4 pills vaginally- there was no bleeding at this point and I was worried, but I decided to give it time. My partner and I fell asleep around 1am and I woke up at about 3:15am to some discomfort but no real pain, and at 3:30am I inserted the last 4 pills and had bloody fingers after. I slept until about 10am the next morning and woke up feeling normal and not in any pain. I went to the bathroom to pee, and as soon as I sat down I had about a solid thirty seconds of chunks, clotting, and blood pouring out. I called my partner in and we ultimately determined that I had probably passed the pregnancy with the size of the chunks in the toilet.
Saturday and Easter Sunday were fairly normal, I stayed taking Motrin and bleeding ever so slightly throughout the weekend. The worst part was the hormonal comedown, I felt like I had been hit by a bus emotionally and didn’t really compute actual feelings. Monday morning I got up and went into work feeling pretty normal, and at about 9:30am I got hit with the worst abdominal pain I have ever felt in my life (I’m prescribed opioids for my cramps as a result of how many times I’ve been hospitalized from sheer pain, so this was a big deal) and clung to the toilet bowl for about 45 minutes at my research firm before just calling it a day and going home. I took 800mg of Motrin and it took about two hours to kick- those were probably the worst two hours of my life up to that point. Nothing would shake the pain, I was taking hot baths and putting microwaved bags of rice on my stomach and nothing was alleviating it. I also started bleeding heavily and clotting severely again. By about 2:30pm that afternoon I was feeling okay enough to get myself some food and felt like I would be able to go into work the next day.
I was so wrong. I was so entirely wrong. I woke up at about 8:00am the next morning and immediately vomited from the antagonizing pain I was in. This was the first time I actually threw up during the whole experience- thankfully my partner was there to hold my hair back and try to make me eat toaster waffles so I could take some more Motrin before he went to work. I was somehow able to choke it down and fell asleep shortly after as I did NOT want to be awake. Wednesday was a little crampy and bloody but I went to work and took breaks sitting on the cold bathroom floor for about 15-20 minutes at a time through the day- but by Thursday we were smooth sailing.
The uterine swelling, needing to pee, and breast tenderness went away after about a week and a half, and the bleeding stopped after about two weeks. I took two more pregnancy tests exactly four weeks from that Friday and they were both negative, and my first period was exactly six weeks after the abortion- it started this Friday. Emotionally, I’m still recovering- Mother’s Day kinda sucked for me I won’t lie, haha. I definitely couldn’t handle a baby right now as I’m a research scientist and my career is on the incline, but it’s fun to dream.
I’ll put any resources I used in the comments as this post is getting very long, and I’ll try to answer whatever questions anyone has to the best of my ability. The buildup was definitely scarier than the actual thing, as it was just like having a heavy period drawn out- and if you’re pregnant, you’ve probably had a period before, so just look at it as something you already experience once every 4 weeks, just ever so slightly amped up. Nothing new. You got this!
