"The Sith are not Extremists" : I Call BS!

2024.05.14 00:28 ScorntheOutcast "The Sith are not Extremists" : I Call BS!

While scrolling about on Reddit, I found a post from TMS: https://www.reddit.com/TheModernSith/comments/12k37fu/the_sith_are_not_extremists/
"I would like to clear up some misconceptions that other groups may have on Sith philosophy. Namely, that the Sith are not some kind of extremists or militants in any way like it may seem to some others. Some may assume that because of the "darker" nature of Sith realism and our furious desire to get what we want, we are in league with these extreme ideologies we see today. This is simply not true. Just because we follow our passions doesn't mean that we enforce our beliefs. As human nature would have it this is more the domain of those kinds of proponents of "peace", "love", "benevolence", and "order" who are willing to use any means necessary to impose their ethics on others without their consent. In the end, they accomplish the opposite and are not so much confused on how they became violent as they welcome the opportunity for this kind of corrupted power.
~~~
The label extremist has become as meaningless today, as have terms like bigotry, racism, and something-or-another-phobic. It is more accurate to say that Sith aren't collectivists, which tends to exclude them from serving in militias or bowing down to governments. Also, when you address the matter of extreme ideologies, which do you refer to? The big bad white collectivists who still follow the funny mustache man's ideas? Maybe you mean the other mustache man's ideas, which lead to the slaughter of millions more? No, I know! You're refering to the ones with the big long beards, who bow five times a day? Wait! I'm wrong! You mean terror--- I mean freedom fighters, who claim they fight to stop fascism, meanwhile destroying private property? You must mean them, right? Sith are certainly what I'd label as extremists and no amount of news media, forcibly demonizing the term will change that
~~~
However, Sithism gives us a different path to follow. Our order is not focused on having others submit to our beliefs but rather we focus on how to develop ourselves. We take whatever means necessary to further our own desires, not to force others to behave as we intend. So far I have never seen a member of the order who went crazy and decided to take out his anger on his close friends. Our path lets us hold ourselves in the highest regard, and not be subject to the influences of a mercurial world where people constantly compete for the attention of their brethren. Instead, we focus entirely on ourselves.
~~~
You proclaim that your order doesn't force people to submit to your beliefs, yet this isn't the case in most experiences I've had with Sith collectives. What usually happens is a lot of group think, banning of opinions and people who challenge you, and even though many of you claim it's not political, you continue to force your political views on everyone, no matter where you go.
~~~
We are self centered and proud of it. We don't need the validation of others. We are capable of looking for opportunities rather than forcing others to hand us responsibilities that we don't deserve. This is one of the principal goals of Sithism, which is self realization rather than delusion. The Sith are not violent or bloodthirsty, because we know that conflict and struggle in a way always exists and this is the part that we are ready to master. We welcome change rather than reacting to difficulties by being consumed by pointless fury and hate.
~~~
If you were merely self centered, you'd not be collectivist, nor support collectivist ideas, which serve only to destroy individuality. When you say Sith aren't violent, aren't extremists, won't force their order on others, you're mistaken. Sith can be violent, though the smart ones don't exercise it needlessly. Also, Sith can and do force their order on others, which is their right to do for their might makes it so. Sith isn't some sanitized ideology, which fits neatly into your plastic wrapped commune, which is surely safe for children. Sith is a turbulent, complex, and difficult to apply ideology.
What you're doing here is what many before you have done, which is try to white wash Sithism into something it's not, purely for your convenience and comfort. That, my dear, is the opposite of what Sithism is; comfort and convenience are mind killers.
~~~
Other beliefs of progress and unity eventually lose track of their original goals and eventually welcome some kind of establishment in the scheme of things. The Sith path however, teaches us not to be ashamed of our human instinct.
~~~
SIthism isn't humanism, dear. If you're looking for that, I recommend LaVey's philosophies or if you're not into the Christian baggage, just take up secular humanism instead.
~~~
If someone doesn't find that they fit along the Sith path, they are welcome to leave as it is up to them. Our ideals only deserves recognition among us so much as it is effective. We accept the more potent aspects of our nature and then use it to realize our own vision, not that of the so called masters who want to decide for us.
~~~
Yes, we decide what works for us. What we don't do is let weak little sobs like you, inject your weakening ideas into the mix while you strut around, claiming to be one of us.
~~~
My advice here is, take what you find useful and discard the rest from both our subreddit and the discord. Everyone is welcome to follow their own nature, and this is what makes us more merit oriented than other groups who place so much emphasis on the belief that the practice itself need not be visible. Belief alone won't lend you power as the progressives, baptists, Jehovah's witnesses, or Muslims might claim for their members. We strive for independence, and imagine possibilities. If you are at the hands of some kind of belief or organization that doesn't serve you, then the most that the Sith path really needs to teach you is that you get to decide for yourself. Let your individuality thrive instead.
~~~
Everyone is welcome to follow their own nature, until they quote a banned book, like a cancelled author, or have political views you don't happen to agree with, you mean. Stop being a hypocrite.
2024.05.14 00:02 EJC28 Falcons 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation
Round 1, Pick 8 - Michael Penix Jr., QB, Washington:
NFL: I’m not sure anyone expected Atlanta, which signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million deal in March, to take a quarterback in the top 10, but here we are. Penix is a big-time playmaker who is the top deep-ball passer in this class. He has surgical precision and throws with good anticipation from the pocket.
CBS Sports: B-. They opted to take their quarterback of the future by taking Penix. He has all the tools, but will learn and wait behind Kirk Cousins. I wonder if he can rush the passer. Like the player, but don’t like the pick.
ESPN: Stunner. The Falcons pulled off the shocker of the first round, taking Penix earlier than just about every expert predicted. He was the fourth quarterback taken in the top 10. There's no doubt Atlanta saw something in Penix when watching him on tape and visiting him. The team sent a ton of staff to see him in recent weeks. Obviously, they felt comfortable with his durability, despite four season-ending injuries in college. Penix, a lefty, has an incredible arm, and from a skill standpoint, he's certainly right up there among the best signal callers on the board. And now he's the successor to Kirk Cousins.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Has devoted his life to the church of the flying spaghetti monster.
Round 2, Pick 35 - Ruke Orhorhoro, DT, Clemson:
NFL: Another trade, with the Falcons swooping up. And this is their second curious pick of this draft. Nothing against Orhorhoro, who has some intriguing skills and might be a better stat stuffer in the NFL than he was at Clemson. But with Johnny Newton on the board, this pick felt like a reach when you consider Atlanta's biggest need -- pass rush.
CBS Sports: B. Big, long, powerful interior rusher without many pass-rush moves. But his traits shine against the run and has enough explosion to win between gaps or with bull rushes. Expensive trade up though hurts his grade despite Falcons filling a need with quality prospect.
ESPN: The Falcons needed a pass-rusher, particularly an EDGE. Most of the impact players at that position went in the first round. Atlanta attempted to trade back into the late first, but weren't able to do so. Instead, the Falcons took Orhorhoro, a defensive tackle who has pass-rushing chops from the inside. Since 2021, Orhorhoro had 9.5 sacks lined up as a DT, which were tied for third in the ACC. The Nigeria-born Orhorhoro didn't start playing football until he was a junior in high school, so the Falcons probably like his upside.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: His bright green fanny pack when traveling is a must.
Round 3, Pick 74 - Bralen Trice, LB, Washington:
NFL: Trice was a consistent pressure source the past two years for the Huskies but had a rough pre-draft process when he shed a bunch of weight for the NFL Scouting Combine but failed to display better speed because of it. Trice was smart to bulk back up for his pro day because I think his game is predicated on winning with a combination of effort and surprising pop in his hands.
CBS Sports: A-. Bad testing hurt his stock but this is as productive of an EDGE as there is in this class. Slippery with pass-rush plans galore. Smaller than his listed weight and doesn’t have serious burst. Flashes of bend though.
ESPN: The Falcons got their pure pass-rusher and, boy, did they need it. This is a team that has had 18 fewer sacks than any other franchise in the NFL over the past three seasons. Atlanta's pass rush win rate was dead last in the league in 2023. Trice had 16 sacks over the past two seasons, which was tied for the fourth most among Power 5 players during that stretch. He's had 12 games with five or more pressures since the start of the 2022 season, which leads all FBS players. Trice played mostly outside linebacker at Washington and he had a reputation for being able to get to the quarterback.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Smells like Celestial Seasonings sleepy-time tea.
Round 4, Pick 109 - Brandon Dorlus, DT, Oregon:
NFL: Round 4 is for the Ducks. I haven't followed the Falcons' logic on every one of their selections this year, but I like Dorlus here. He can play multiple spots along the D-line and be a movable piece for Raheem Morris' unit.
CBS Sports: A-. Fun, twitchy and thick “tweener” who can literally win at any alignment along the defensive line. Isn’t the most sudden, nor the best with his hands but is so slippery between blockers. Overall athletic profile is impressive. Rushes can get too high, doesn’t play with much power. Can get washed out vs. the run. Has frame to add more weight.
ESPN: It was somewhat surprising the Falcons didn't take a cornerback here or even a safety. But the team is clearly and rapidly reshaping its defensive line, which already had quality veteran players in Grady Jarrett and David Onyemata. Dorlus is Atlanta's second straight defensive line selection. And Dorlus, who led Oregon with five sacks, is extremely versatile. He can play inside, as a defensive end or even outside linebacker. Pass-rushers were the Falcons' biggest needs and now they have three rookies who fit the bill after not taking a defender with the No. 8 overall pick as many expected.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Wants you to call your family and tell them you love and cherish them.
Round 5, Pick 143 - JD Bertrand, LB, Notre Dame:
NFL: An Atlanta native, Bertrand is a coach's dream in spite of his subpar length and injury history. He's instinctive and tough and carries a hard-hat mentality to work every day.
CBS Sports: C. So active, so smart. Always around the ball. Reads his keys in a flash. Block-avoider. Ascending coverage skill just minimal ball production at Notre Dame. High tackling numbers but also misses many.
ESPN: The Falcons are completely reshaping their front seven in this draft. In Bertrand, they not only get their second collegiate defensive team captain (Bralen Trice was captain at Washington), but also someone with significant physical tools. Bertrand was a three-year starter at Notre Dame, led the team with 76 tackles in 2023 and had 16 tackles behind the line of scrimmage this past season. He's also a former Eagle Scout and was a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy for community service.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Prefers to code in Notepad with the wingding font.
Round 6, Pick 186 - Jase McClellan, RB, Alabama:
NFL: McClellan is a power back who runs with great toughness and exercises great ball security, fumbling only once in college on nearly 400 touches. But he's a one-dimensional runner on a team pretty loaded at running back.
CBS Sports: C+. Jack of all trades, master of none with minimal mileage on his legs. Will run away from some slower defenders but not a true burner. Receiving ability is there. Vision is a strength between the tackles. Elusive but not special in that regard. Classic scatback.
ESPN: The team needed a third running back behind Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier, and that's presumably where McClellan will fit. McClellan was Alabama's primary starter for one year after returning in 2022 from a torn ACL. He ran for 890 yards on 180 carries with eight touchdowns this past season. McClellan, who's only 21, isn't flashy, but Atlanta has been taking upside and translatable physical attributes over flash this entire draft.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Kept calling the NFL at 800-635-5300 to complain about the refs.
Round 6, Pick 187 - Casey Washington, WR, Illinois:
NFL: A strong pro day helped solidify Washington as a draft pick. He looks like a solid, reliable possession receiver with natural route-running skills, but he's not special at any one thing.
CBS Sports: C. Good sized outside WR who plays with a throwback style. Jump balls, back-shoulders, etc. are his speciality. Good speed for his size too. Just doesn’t have the bend or suddenness to separate consistently.
ESPN: Depth at wide receiver was absolutely a need going into the draft, though it's still surprising the Falcons won't pick a cornerback until their final pick, if at all. Washington was sixth in the Big Ten in receiving yards during conference games (589) and finished his career with Illinois very strong -- 218 yards on nine receptions and three touchdowns against Northwestern back in November. Washington is 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, and Atlanta did need size at the position. He'll be tied for the second tallest wide receiver on the roster after top wideout Drake London (6-4).
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Taught his goldfish to play fetch. Not the most exciting game but they’re happy.
Round 6, Pick 197 - Zion Logue, DT, Georgia:
NFL: Logue was a flash player for the two-time champion Bulldogs, often stuck behind a ton of talent in Athens. His length is outstanding, even if his production (1.5 sacks in 50-plus college games) isn't.
CBS Sports: C+. Big, long, thick SEC-tested DL with some above-average burst for his size and a pass-rush move every so often. Production never matched his size or athleticism.
ESPN: This draft, after all the controversy in the first round, was all about front-seven versatility and depth for the Falcons. Logue is a big body at 6-foot-6 and 314 pounds. And the team's fifth front-seven selection of the week. Atlanta has put a premium on length with its defenders so far and Logue has that to go along with his massive frame. The Tennessee native only started one year at Georgia, so he's relatively inexperienced with potential upside the Falcons are once again banking on.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Can eat twenty scones in a single sitting.
2024.05.13 20:31 LevTolstoy Hey guys, if you haven't seen IM John Bartholomew's chess improvement newsletter, I strongly recommend you check it out! They're really good. Here's the first one.
Here's the first one from a two months ago (copied here because I can't find a linkable archive):
Developing Confidence & Self-Belief
...
One of my best-ever chess performances occurred under unique circumstances. It didn’t happen in a rated tournament, and I didn’t even play particularly strong chess. In fact, I don’t think anyone would predict why I consider this result so special!
It happened in London in November 2018. The World Championship between Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana was in full swing (the one where they drew all 12 classical games), and the company I co-founded, Chessable, was hosting a free 3+0 blitz event at the Battersea Chess Club on the evening of one of the rest days. My business partner, David Kramaley, and I were expecting 30-40 participants - mainly Chessable enthusiasts, members of the club, and bored World Championship spectators. So, we were pleasantly surprised and more than a little alarmed when 100+ players turned up that night! Much scrambling ensued as we tried to confirm with Battersea club management whether we could even accommodate that many players. Did we have enough boards? Enough chess clocks? Enough ‘Team Carlsen’/’Team Caruana’ masks (this was the theme for the evening!)? Nobody seemed to be sure, but we rolled with it. The tournament was delayed by nearly an hour. In the end, there were eight sections of 14 players each, for a total of 112 players. Each section was a round robin, with the eight winners advancing to a final knockout bracket to determine the winner. Five GMs and 12 IMs competed, including recognizable personalities such as GM David Howell, GM Simon Williams, IM Eric Rosen, IM Kostya Kavutskiy, and IM Christof Sielecki.
Now, I was tired. I had taken an overnight flight from the US, and I had not slept a wink on the plane. David had picked me up from Heathrow Airport that morning, and we, along with now Chessable CEO Geert van der Velde, had spent most of the day preparing for the event. I was stressed, sleep-deprived, and over-caffeinated from Costa coffee. For a moment, I thought about just assisting the tournament directors instead of participating in the tournament. But in the end, chess players play. So, let’s go!
The tournament lasted several hours, and it was a wonderful mess. With the influx of players, the overwhelmed Battersea tournament directors had no means of digitally pairing the event, so results were chalked up by hand on hastily-made crosstables. The club was bursting at the seams, with players packed arm-to-arm down long tables, frantically flinging pieces and punching clocks, trying to keep pace with the unforgiving 3 minute/no increment time control. Upon completion of a game, many players scrambled to the bar (yes, there was a bar in the chess club - welcome to England!) to grab a pint before the next game commenced. Chess at its finest.
Despite the chaos, I started off well. The atmosphere was competitive, but there was a jovial mood in the air (I think the masks helped with that!). At the board - playing the game I love in another country - my concerns melted away. I felt proud to have helped organize an event like this, and I was profoundly grateful that the attendees took the logistical difficulties in stride. I won game after game, and I eventually won my group, thereby advancing to the eight-way knockout that featured several of the aforementioned titled players. It was getting late, but there were still many players and spectators in attendance.
During the first knockout game (which was now even faster: 2+0), I had a small epiphany: I was in a flow state. Normally, I’m a careful, strategic chess player. I struggle with time management - a consequence of perfectionism and overthinking. That day, I was so tired and relieved that the event had not been a disaster that I simply let my hand do the playing. I was firing out my first-instinct moves, and it was working! I was ahead on the clock in almost every game, confidently executing moves through pure inertia. As a result, I was putting a lot of pressure on my opponents! In the moment, I recognized this flow feeling, but I resisted the temptation to further analyze or “capture” it. That’s the last thing you want to do in an immersive state; it’s crucial to just let it ride.
I won the first knockout game, and I next sat down to face GM Howell. David is an incredible player - a former 2700+ FIDE, three-time British champion who made Grandmaster at age 16 - but I remembered that he was also notorious for time trouble, and two minutes is not a lot of game clock to work with. Why couldn't I beat him? Everything had come easily to me up until that point, and I believed there was no reason why that shouldn’t continue.
We shook hands and started the clock. I played 1.d4, and David responded with a tricky opening, the Grünfeld Defense. I kept driving the pace, sticking mainly to the first move that came to mind. Move, hit clock. Move, hit clock. As a result, I built up a nice little time lead. My memory is hazy as to the game itself, but I recall that at one point, I was on the defensive and opted to give up my queen for a few of David’s pieces. Move, hit clock. In blitz/bullet chess the initiative is at a premium, and you usually want to be the one forcing your opponent to make the tough decisions. I knew that although David had a queen near my king, he was maneuvering this high-value piece in tight quarters, and I had several lower-value pieces I could throw in his way. Move, hit clock. Move, hit clock. In trying to find the best way to continue the attack, David hesitated just a bit, and his clock registered ‘0.00.’ I won the game on time!
Proof of time management: here I am with an extra 14 seconds!
In the final, I faced fellow American IM Kostya Kavutskiy. This game actually closely mirrored the contest with GM Howell. Frazzled but strangely confident, I resolved to continue hammering out the moves (move, hit clock). Feel free to watch what happened:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHeNkMroQCg (thanks to Eric Rosen for recording)
I had a promising position early on, but then I made a couple mistakes, and Kostya sprang to life, grabbing a key pawn with his queen. Although I was down a piece and fighting to defend my king, I held a 2-to-1 lead on the clock. Move, hit clock. Move, hit clock. With 13 seconds versus my opponent’s 6 seconds, I dodged a major bullet, as Kostya had barely any time to register that I had just made a huge blunder (see if you can spot it - 3:39 in the video). Like GM Howell, Kostya’s time ticked down to zero. I had won the game, and with it, the entire event! Needless to say, I slept very well that night in London.
Why do I call this my best-ever performance? Sure, I beat a few strong players, but I was dead lost in the final and probably getting outplayed in the prior game, too. Besides, the tournament was ultimately just a fun event played at a very fast time control. But for me, this was the moment where I fully understood what it meant to trust myself. In entering an event exhausted and stressed, and in giving myself permission to switch off the self-critical, second-guessing part of my brain, I actually achieved the best possible outcome! Performing in spite of adverse conditions felt like a validation of the tens of thousands of hours I had put into chess. It was as if my primal chess brain teamed up with my hand to let me know that even stripped down to solely my instincts, I was already good enough. “Hey John, you’ve put in the time - how about you let us take over tonight? Just trust us.” Autopilot. No fear (fear is a topic for a future post, by the way!). Enormously fun and liberating as well. I still struggle with my clock, but this tournament is always a useful reminder of my natural ability. It showed me that I don’t have to play clean chess under perfect conditions to win. I can win “ugly,” too!
We are all capable of way more than we think, and we often need difficult or even rock-bottom moments to prove that to ourselves. This is why I believe so deeply in my tagline: “Only through our inevitable blunders shall we pave the road to mastery.” But make no mistake: true confidence and self-belief are forged in the work you’re willing to undertake. I’m certain that lightning would not have struck me that evening at the Battersea Chess Club if I hadn’t paid my dues, and this is true of high performance in any pursuit. I love what Michael Jordan had to say on this subject:
"If you have doubt or concern about a shot or feel the 'pressure' of that shot, it's because you haven't practiced it enough. The only way to relieve that pressure is to build your fundamentals, practice them over and over, so when the game breaks down, you can handle anything that transpires."
Eliminate self-doubt through deliberate practice and repetition. If you do that, you’ll be poised and prepared while those around you are panicking and crumbling. And you know what’s interesting? The universe has a way of rewarding those who have done the work and possess the courage to bet on themselves. Jordan’s description of NBA “regular season” performers versus “playoff” performers highlight this sentiment perfectly:
"Some guys in the league right now, their regular seasons are different than the playoffs," Jordan explains. "Why is that? Because it's a different kind of pressure. Those guys, when it gets stripped down, don't believe in themselves. They aren't sure they can hit the big shot, so they can't. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy."
In chess and in life, you should always view yourself as a player in the game. You don’t have to be Kanye West-level irrationally confident, but you should believe that good things can and will happen to you. If you recall, this is what I told myself before that game with GM Howell! So, regularly engage yourself in positive self-talk. Remind yourself that you’re equipped to handle any number of circumstances. Life imposes a great deal of negativity upon us already - if we’re not our own greatest cheerleader, how can we expect others to believe in us? In closing, I’d highly recommend you watch this excerpt from an interview that 22 year-old Magnus Carlsen gave to Charlie Rose back in 2013. The entire 53-minute conversation is worth watching, but I was especially struck by Carlsen’s frank comments on the role confidence and optimism play in his psychology and his ascent to the top of the chess world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1EyeI9ahRg
“...I think you need to be absolutely confident, and I think it’s always better to be overly confident than pessimistic … if you’re not optimistic - if you’re not looking for your chances - you’re going to miss opportunities.”
At 2:35, Magnus reveals that by age 16-17, he realized that he would “...probably become the best at some point” (kudos to Rose for drawing that out of him), and he needed to make a mental paradigm shift towards optimism to drive that reality home. By the way, this interview was conducted several months before Carlsen defeated Viswanathan Anand to become World Champion! It’s clear that Magnus had already hard-wired his unequivocal self-belief. I hope this post inspires you to cultivate/refine your personal convictions. It’s far more than a platitude (“just be confident”); it’s about developing core self-belief through introspection and hard work. And when things get tough (and they will!), lean into those down moments. Be grateful for them. After all, you’re about to discover who you really are!
2024.05.13 16:44 ImaginaryAsk4074 Valdez > Hamilton
I’m sorry, but (outside of pinch running situations) there are ZERO reasons that David Hamilton should be getting big league reps over a guy like Enmanuel Valdez.
And don’t give me any of that “Hamilton is more versatile” crap either…. Hamilton sucks no matter what position you play him at. If you want to tell me that Hamilton is more valuable purely as a pinch runner, fine…. But I do not want to see the word “versatility” in the same sentence as David Hamilton.
With Romy Gonzalez back from injury, the team has depth at shortstop.
I have no use for David Hamilton on this baseball team. They need to send him down ASAP.
2024.05.13 14:57 Western_Arm9682 How Dier Became 1st-Choice CB (Long Analysis)
These are some of my thoughts for the CB situation currently after having watched every single game of the season. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me; this is just my analysis and opinion. In terms of credibility I have a Spain Level 2 (UEFA-2) License.
Tuchel’s view on rankings for CBs according to different skillsets (prediction):
Progressiveness (Becoming an attacking option & line-breaking progressive passes): Upa > Kim > MdL > Dier
Helping out in Midfield (Ability to stop counterattacks starting from midfield): Kim > Upa > MdL > Dier
Backline recovery: Kim & Upa > MdL > Dier
Area/Zone defense: MdL > Kim > Dier > Upa
Commanding Ability: MdL > Dier > Kim & Upa
Press resistant: Upa > Kim & MdL > Dier
Ground-ball buildup: Upa > Kim & Dier > MdL
Buildup (long passes)*: Dier > Upa > Kim > MdL
*To elaborate on the buildup, in football long passes diagonally are easier compared to long passes horizontally up the field. In my eyes Dier has the least discrepancy between the two. Upa & Kim are better than him in line-breaking ground passes, but in terms of long passes Dier takes the cake.
1. Why did Tuchel use Kim & Upa in a high-line tactic in the first half of the season?
Why not use De Ligt - Kim or De Ligt - Upa and why did Tuchel only use Kim & Upa exclusively who have similar weaknesses? This is because of the “progressiveness” and “backline recovery” that both of them excel at. It seems even in a high defensive line tactic, Tuchel wanted the CBs to be attacking. He wanted to increase the number of attacking options the team had not just with other forwards but with the defense.
Reason I think this is because Tuchel used Upamecano up the field rather than Kim. While both of them are pacey and are great at backline recovery, Upa is better than Kim at becoming another attacking option and is the best with his feet, whereas Kim is better than Upa at ball recovery in the midfield after a turnover. This is a matter of the manager’s own preferences.
Using Upa higher up the field increases the offensiveness of the team, but at the same time he is weaker than Kim at pressing players in the midfield. Thus, playing Upa higher means a more offensive team, Kim higher up means a more cautionary approach. Reason why Tuchel didn’t use De Ligt? Because he isn’t as progressive, doesn’t add an attacking threat in the team and isn’t as fast as Upa & Kim in backline recovery.
If Tuchel wanted to use a tactic that uses both CBs to hold up the backline then De Ligt could’ve been used more, but in a hyper-offensive tactic where one CB is involved in the attack — in other words a one-back tactic— he thought De Ligt isn’t as effective.
For this to have been possible, a CDM who is fast at defensive recovery & is a good defender and/or a strong defending fullback would be great to help De Ligt in the back. However Bayern doesn’t have a fast right back and Davies on the left isn’t a good defender nor does he help out in defense as much. Bayern didn’t have a proper 6, much less a fast one.
Therefore the CBs were solely responsible for backline recovery and stopping counterattacks, and Tuchel believes De Ligt wasn’t as suited for this. Again, if Tuchel wanted to play De Ligt while playing a high line, both CBs needed to be defending the line, but it seems Tuchel wanted to increase the number of attackers.
2. Failure of the high line tactic (and Sané’s responsibility)
Some people ask if the absence of a real CDM was the reason that Bayern were so unstable while playing a high line tactic, and while that is true to an extent, a more direct reason why is because of the forwards’ numerous turnovers and lack of high-pressing.
A need while using a high-line tactic is that even if the team fails to score, the play needs to be finished (as in taking a shot & earning a corner or shooting out of bounds), and if that doesn’t happen and a turn-over occurs, the forwards and midfielders should be high-pressing as if the midfield is near the goal post.
One may ask; wouldn’t this be too intensive an approach and cuts down on attacking players’ stamina? In reality, more the ball is lost higher up the field & midfield, the more the overall team loses stamina. While in the moment, high-pressing may be tiring for the forwards & midfielders, but this actually reduces the number of times they recover back down the pitch to help in defense, hence overall saving stamina.
Just using common sense, what would be harder? Running within one side of the half-line, or running all the way up and down the pitch?
This is the reason why Man City, despite having a small squad, gets stronger in the latter part of the season. City is very adept at pressing higher up the pitch and stopping counterattacks, so they use up less of their energy unnecessarily running up and down the pitch overall compared to other teams.
However, Bayern’s forwards attempt less link-up plays and try to get past the defense using skills and dribbling, and when they lose the ball they do not usually participate in pressing afterwards. I’ve noticed this especially in Sané; he contributes most to turnovers and when the opposition steals the ball he rarely attempts to win the ball back. And in addition, in the process of dragging opposition to create space, Sané tends to lose the ball lower down the pitch, which makes it hard for the team as a whole to press and widens the space that the midfielders have to cover. The risk that the midfielders and defenders are subject to increases when this happens.
When this happens, the midfielders are supposed to press up in the midfield to win the ball, but Bayern’s midfielders in general are not great pressers and lack the energy and athleticism I.e. Kimmich. In addition to this, having no proper CDM makes this a bigger issue than it should have been; it’s not solely because of a lack of CDMs that this occurs. Even with a proper CDM, with the forwards & midfielders not attempting to press, the situation wouldn’t have greatly improved since the main problem still persisted.
To summarize, the forwards turnover the ball often and rarely attempt to win the ball back, the midfielders are weak pressers, and the fullbacks aren’t the best at defensive recovery. Thus, the forwards themselves may conserve their own energy while playing like this, but that lack of effort goes back to the CBs who are forced to spend their own energy and sprint back to prevent opposition counterattacks. In return for the forwards conserving their strength (particularly Sané), the CBs were forced to use up their own stamina to stop attacks, and when this happens consistently game after game, the CBs are unlikely to be able to maintain their form until the end of the season.
This is why I disagree with criticisms towards Upa and Kim in the first half of the season; in fact I believe there are very few CB pairings throughout the world who could stop attacks on their own like they did.
3. The change to a low-line tactic (And Dier’s rise to 1st Choice CB)
Tuchel immediately changed to a low-line tactic in the second half of the season after he said in a post-match interview that the level of the players were lower than he expected. When playing a high-defensive line, the space between the opposition defense is tighter hence why it is more difficult to get past the defense using skills, and there is less space to run through. In contrast, playing a low-line defense means that in response the opposition will play higher up the pitch, hence leading to more space between opposition defense and more space behind.
In order to make up for the lack of link-up abilities in the Bayern forwards and midfield’s lack of pressing & covering ability, Tuchel lowered the line to make the space between the midfield and defensive line tighter and switched to a counterattacking tactic. There is always space that results in the opposition backline when one team plays a low-line.
Bayern is more threatening when they get through the central area rather than the flanks, so the opposition are forced to pay closer attention to the space in the center of the field rather than the flanks, hence why when the opposition defensive line space widens, the flank space is empty. Bayern doesn’t have a progressive CDM either. Therefore, in terms of the team structure, the most stable way of building up is the first pass that comes from the CBs to the flanks.
This is where the ironic situation of Dier, who was at best 4th choice CB in Tottenham, rises to 1st choice CB in Bayern. Looking back at the CB abilities I listed above, there is only one area that Dier ranks first in; the build-up (long passes).
There was no midfielder who could progress the ball up the field, hence why it was crucial for a CB who could spray passes from the back. Hence why Dier is even above De Ligt in terms of CB pecking order.
Yes, just because of this one ability (long pass build-up), Dier managed to be 1st choice. And for his partner, since the team was playing a low-line, the remaining spot went to De Ligt, who ranks 1st in area/zone defensive ability. Thus, even if Kim and Upa were in good form, they would be competing with De Ligt for the starting spot rather than Dier, who is a must-choose in this tactic.
Dier’s weakness which is narrow defensive covering capabilities are covered because the low-line results in less space between the players, and Dier rarely is put into a situation where he’s put into a speed race with a defender.
4. Next season starting CB predictions (in the case that players are not moved on)
This depends on the tactical style of the next manager. I believe the player that is most at risk here is Dier. The advantages of a low line is that the lows while playing the tactic are comparably higher, but in return the highs of playing one are lower. This is not necessarily the case in singular matches/tournaments where the team adjusts to counter a team, but in terms of playing throughout the entire season.
This is because, similar to what was said before, a low-line tactic requires the players to move up and down the pitch, which means that the squad overall use up too much energy to play well in the league (in particular the midfielders and fullbacks). In a team like Bayern that aims to win the league and CL each year, this isn’t a tactic that bides well as a main tactic.
The only exception is the Real Madrid squad. Their midfielders and forwards are exceptional at scoring with a single counterattack and rack up goals with comparably lower attempts. However this is not the norm and should be excluded from the conversation.
The board would be well aware of this and are unlikely to aim for a manager that plays a low line. Their plans ABCDEFG all have been turned down (Nagelsmann, Rangnick, etc.) but I believe offensive-minded managers are still being targeted.
And I’m sorry to say this for Dier, but I believe Dier’s weaknesses would show drastically not just if the team plays a high-line, but if they play a half-half line as well. He is just too slow to be usable in basically any high line scenario. This second half of the season Tuchel gave up on a high-line altogether and drastically lowered the defensive line to use Dier’s buildup abilities, so you could say he basically created a tactic for Dier.
Not necessarily even looking at other managers; I believe if Tuchel was promised a 3-year length plan, he would not have utilized a low-line tactic that has comparably lower highs that aims to utilize Dier well.
Of course, if next season the forwards and midfielders don’t improve and new players aren’t brought in, then the team could still play a low-line with Dier as a crucial player. But this in itself is worrying, because Dier is a useful player in a low-line tactic, but a tactic that aims to use Dier as one of the main stars of the team would result in a tactic that already has low highs but also is a tactic that is being used because the players aren’t up to a certain level — in other words the team balance is broken.
Thus, if this is the main tactic for the next season it would signal that Bayern’s forward and midfield problem still hasn’t been fixed.
The remaining center backs are Upa, Kim, and De Ligt. While there is a chance that De Ligt may be pushed back to being a sub again if a tactic where one of the CBs participating as an attacking option is used, I personally think slightly differently.
Even in a high-line tactic there are defining differences, and in a tactic where the manager prefers more of a balance, he could use a combination of a fast-slower player like MdL - Upa or MdL - Kim, and if the manager decides to accept the risks and play a purely offensive tactic he could use Kim - Upa like in the first half of the season.
Personally, disregarding manager appointment, I think MdL - Kim would be the best option for the long term future; one aggressive player that is adept at winning the ball back even while playing a high line in Kim, and one stable player that holds the defensive line together in De Ligt. This would work even better if in the summer a proper CDM and a defensive fullback could be brought in to help De Ligt cover the back line.
Some people may point out that De Ligt lacks the pace to play a high line; however, I disagree. Looking at his time in Ajax, De Ligt was very good at covering the backline and would cover the space that Blind, who was too slow, would leave. MdL also showed great ability to mark one-on-one with forwards entering the box, and almost solely carried aerial duels that Blind, Tagliafico in Ajax and Mazraoui at Bayern would lack. MdL was used similarly to Kim at Napoli in Juventus, with Bonucci/Chiellini covering the back line while De Ligt was an aggressive defender while at the same time covering the back line. A disclaimer is that De Jong did help MdL a lot with midfield pressing, hence why I personally am greatly interested in De Jong rumors to Bayern.
Overall I believe De Ligt shines the most when paired with a fast defender, like Kim, and he played well for Netherlands and Ajax while playing a high line, which is one of the reasons why I found Tuchel’s insistence on not using him at the beginning of then season a bit odd.
In conclusion, many fans tend to berate a player for having poor form, but I wanted to point out that in reality a manager’s decisions on starting players is much more complex than in the perspective of a general fan.
2024.05.13 14:50 Godzillarich League of Legends has a missed opportunity when to come to some of their fantasy races and champ possibilities.
Edit: shit, typo in the title. and I can't edit it that sucks
I'm going to be blunt, I do find it a huge missed opportunity that some races only have one champ representative. Particularly when it comes to three.
Troll, Minotaur and Brackern.
I'm going to preface this by saying I know why they haven't done another champion of either these three races. They're sort of an artifact form when random game designers wanted a troll, minotaur and scorpion champion and didn't really think about their place in the lore. As such, it's understandable why there would not be as much interest and expanding these races with other champion. I still think there's interesting things you can do coming up with new champion for these three groups.
Let's discuss Brackern first. Of the three, it's pretty understandable why we will probably only get one representative (Skarner) anytime soon or ever for that matter. Three reasons.
  1. The rework was a little over a month ago so they just revisited this race, and probably don't want to do it again anytime soon.
  2. They are just scorpions. God scorpions, but still just have the basic body plan of scorpions. It would be hard to make another one a champion that's distinct from Skarner.
  3. Finally and the most understandable reason. Skarner has been a pain to implement into the game since he was first created. Every time the designers have talked about him it always includes frustrations about his design. His vgu especially took a long ass time to finally get down to a state that he was ready to go.
With all these reasons, it's very understandable if they never make another Brackern champion again but I still think you can get some decent ideas out of it.
One interesting tidbit of the new lore are The broodmothers, significant leaders of the race and the ones that raise all the kids. A broodmother champion could be a fun concept, using babies to attack. I also think you can cheat the concept a bit. While they are described as scorpions in the lore, We have not seen what other Brackern look like exactly. They could get really creative with the designs and make it easier to implement them into the game.
Next up is the trolls. Trundle is a fun antagonist, but it's a shame that he's the only perspective we have on trolls. I think it would be cool to have a troll character who wasn't completely aligned with trundle.
I'm going to go a bit fanfic here but it would be interesting to have a troll that's on the side of good. Maybe someone who against trundle in some way and has to align themself, be grudgingly, with humans. Considering ashe, a mostly good alliance character is quite hateful towards trolls, it could be an interesting avenue for character stuff. And before people type in the comments something like. "The trolls in League of Legends are like the orcs in Lord of the rings. They are pure evil creatures." How could you forget the wonder that is Braum's color story TOMB OF THE TROLL BOY where Braums saves a troll boy from an evil trap. This isnt an insignificant story either, this is how he got his shield. Trolls do you have the capacity to be more than monsters and it would be interesting for the designers to come up with something for that.
The minotaurs I feel like is the biggest missed opportunity of the three. Alister story is quite interesting. A man who tried to protect his homeland from Noxus but in the end was enslaved and nearly became a beast before being shown kindness. Now he's travels the countryside fighting against Noxus whenever he can and trying to search for the person who freed him. And that's basically the entirety of alistar story. Besides updating it to remove the parts about the now non-canon League. A problem that is shared with a bunch of champions, but at the very least it seems to definitely be canon considering it matches up pretty well with other pieces of Minotaur lore we have.
Of the three races the minotaurs have certainly got the most exposure outside of our purple cow. Particularly in LOR. There's a huge thing where many freely joined the empire rather than fight them, and have integrated deep into the military. The new Minotaur champion writes itself. In fact, they technically made it a few times in LOR like with Aurok Glinthorn. In fact, put him in the game. He's cool.
There's also minotaurs that fled to Demacia and are now part of their armies, which once again writes itself. Why is LOR much better with the lore. I think of the three I'd be most interested in what they do with another Minotaur champion.
That's all I have to say on this front. Sorry this has been a bit of rambling, but this is always been in the back of my mind and I kind of wanted to vent it out.
Edit: shit, typo in the title.
2024.05.13 14:26 quadrippa The Leagues of Votann during the Great Crusade?
This post is purely for speculation, since we don't have much in the way of answers yet. But it's an important question to ask:
How did the Great Crusade interact with the Leagues of Votann in the Core, if they interacted at all?
We have only a handful of sources that have anything to say about the subject. In the Imperialis Militia rules for Horus Heresy, we see that one of the militia types are "Kinsfolk Helots", that allow you to bring Squats to Horus Heresy. The fact that they're "Helots" and that the flavor text calls them "sub-citizens" makes it sound like these are remote Leagues or some offshoot that have integrated into human worlds.
Secondly, we know that the Ironhead Prospectors were invited to Necromunda in order to help rebuild, and have remained there ever since.
And in White Dwarf 500 battle report, we know that Kin can exist in substantial numbers on Imperial worlds. An imperial mining world of some 3 billion had around 20 million Kin on it.
So the question remains: If Kin were this widespread through Imperial space, and their affinity for machines was well known, what sort of interactions would the Great Crusade have had with the more established Leagues in the Core? Would they have had any at all?
2024.05.13 14:16 aguer0 Dissecting the 115 - What is it all about?
Following on from the BBC article posted recently “explaining” the 115 charges laid at Man City’s feet, I decided to look properly at what the charges are, given that the article barely went further than rehashing that Man City cheated over and over again without any attempt at critical analysis.
What are the breaches?
There are 5 main areas that the breaches fall into:
The actual text of the Premier League’s statement can be seen here: https://www.premierleague.com/news/3045970
Where did the breaches come from?
The original source of the allegations were leaked emails from Portuguese hacker Rui Pinto. Rui Pinto was handed a 4 year suspended sentence last year for attempted extortion, illegal access to data and breach of correspondence with relation to the leaks, which were posted via his Football Leaks website in 2015. Emails from Manchester City were not the only things leaked - players like Messi and Neymar were also caught up in some leaks related to their salaries. In total there were millions of documents.
These leaked emails surfaced via Der Spiegel in 2018 as part of an expose feature which they ran, and spanned 4 articles at the time. You can read the first here: https://www.spiegel.de/international/manchester-city-exposed-bending-the-rules-to-the-tune-of-millions-a-1236346.html
On the back of these leaks UEFA, after launching an investigation in March 2019, charged Manchester City with breaches of their regulations which led, in 2020, to the club being banned from European football for 2 seasons alongside a 30m euro fine.
Alongside that UEFA investigation, the Premier League also opened an investigation. It took until 2023 for them to present their charges - the statement linked above. The case is ongoing.
What about those UEFA breaches?
The club denied any wrongdoing and appealed to CAS, the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Upon hearing the case CAS found no evidence to support UEFA’s conclusions with regards to the allegations. As a result the club’s ban from European football was overturned with immediate effect. CAS sided with UEFA on their non-cooperation charges and stated that the club could have done more to provide UEFA with documents when requested. CAS therefore issued a 10m Euro fine.
You can read the verdict here: https://www.tas-cas.org/fileadmin/user_upload/CAS_Award_6785___internet__.pdf
This was the second time that the club had a run-in with UEFA. They first had a disagreement over potential breaches in 2014 related to the club spending more than the allowed amount in the previous season - the club contested that this was the result of UEFA not allowing deductibles for existing contracts started before FFP was introduced. There were no charges laid at City for this - the club entered a settlement with UEFA and a subsequent monitoring period with specific break even requirements and squad restrictions. That period ended in 2017 with UEFA declaring that the club had complied with all of the agreements within the settlement.
Didn’t City get away with it because everything was time barred?
The CAS verdict did find that the first 2 years of alleged breaches related to the club’s financial statements (the bits referred to as inflated sponsorships) were time barred (a process whereby the time permitted to bring forward the issue has passed and it is no longer possible to pursue the case - 5 years in UEFA’s rules), and so could not be considered. The rest of the years questioned were considered, and ultimately no evidence was found of financial irregularities.
Onto the 115
The Premier League statement lists 5 key areas of breaches, outlined earlier, which I will dive into more now. In total, the number of rules that the Premier League have accused Manchester City of breaching is 130. That is broken down into:
No matter how I try to recalculate it, I never get 115. I'm unsure of the exact place that the 115 number came from, and it certainly doesn't match the numbers when broken down in the BBC article.
I have broken down the list of breaches and cross referenced them with the Premier League’s handbooks for each season from 2009/10 through to 2022/23. With all five areas of breaches I have provided the text of the rule that the League included in their statement, plus a summarised version that tries to give a less legalese or technical reading. The tables are presented for reference and I won’t go into the specifics of them.
Accuracy of financial information
The Premier League stated:
In respect of each of Seasons 2009/10 to 2017/18 inclusive, the Premier League Rules applicable in those seasons that required provision by a member club to the Premier League, in the utmost good faith, of accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position, in particular with respect to its revenue (including sponsorship revenue), its related parties and its operating costs.
Below is the list of breaches taken from the league’s statement, grouped and translated into easier language.
C86, E11 09/10 10/11 11/12 12/13 13/14 14/15 15/16 16/17 17/18 By 31st March in each Season, each Club shall submit to the Secretary in respect of itself (or if the Club considers it appropriate or the Secretary so requests in respect of the Group of which it is a member) future financial information (“Future Financial Information”) comprising projected profit and loss accounts, cash flow, balance sheets and relevant explanatory notes commencing from its accounting reference date or, if it has submitted interim accounts pursuant to Rule E.6, from the date to which those interim accounts were prepared and expiring on the next accounting reference date after the end of the following Season. The projected profit and loss accounts, cash flow and balance sheets shall be prepared at a maximum of quarterly intervals Each club needs to provide the league with projected (or expected) financial statements for the future. These projections include profit and loss statements, cash flow details, and balance sheets.
C87, E12 09/10 10/11 11/12 12/13 13/14 14/15 15/16 16/17 17/18 The Future Financial Information shall: 1. be prepared in accordance with the accounting principles adopted in the preparation of the Club’s annual accounts (except where the accounting principles and policies are to be changed in the subsequent annual accounts, in which case the new accounting principles and polices should be followed); 2. be approved in writing by the board of directors of the company to which they relate; 3. to include in the explanatory notes thereto principal assumptions and risks; and 4. include for comparison profit and loss accounts for the period covered by the annual accounts and interim accounts submitted pursuant to Rules E.3 and E.6, a forecast for the current financial year and a balance sheet as at the date of the interim accounts submitted pursuant to Rule E.6. Clubs must:1. Use the same accounting principles as in their last annual report, unless planning changes for the upcoming year. 2. Get these forecasts approved in writing by the club's board of directors. 3. Include notes that explain the main assumptions and risks involved. 4. Add comparative profit and loss accounts and a balance sheet from their most recent financial reports for clear reference.
E49, E50, E51 13/14 14/15 15/16 16/17 17/18 Each Club shall notify the League forthwith of any circumstances which may materially and adversely affect any of the information or representations submitted to the League pursuant to this Section E, and on consideration of those circumstances the Board may, if it considers it appropriate, amend any decision or determination that it made based on such information or representations. Clubs must immediately inform the league if there are any changes that could significantly impact the accuracy of the financial or other information they have previously submitted
Effectively the Premier League are stating that, for the period of 2009 until 2018, the club have not been filing accurate financial statements. This relates directly to the leaked emails that are presented to show members of staff discussing payment amounts and sources of monies that are paid to the club for sponsorship, namely for the two main sponsors, Etihad and Etisalat, that are referenced in the UEFA trial. As can be seen from the rules above, some of them are more obviously related than others. There has been some criticism of the Premier League for going for such a wide number of charges, as they have not focused on one area.
With regards to this section of breaches, the club claims that the leaked emails are not evidence of wrongdoing, and are not admissible as evidence. CAS found in favour of UEFA’s assertion that the emails were in fact admissible in their case, so the club is unlikely to be able to contest this point further. This section will essentially boil down to whether the leaked emails show enough evidence of wrongdoing, and whether any further context that has been provided by the club (something that was mentioned in the CAS trial as being helpful towards Man City’s case) is sufficient to prove guilt. It is likely that only 1 or 2 of these 50 rules above are actually key. Others, like B13, B15, and B16 which relate to clubs acting in good faith, would not be enough to charge a club without being bundled in with something else.
Manager and Player Remuneration
This section is broken down further into 2 key areas: manager remuneration, and player remuneration.
The Premier League statement:
In respect of each of Seasons 2009/10 to 2012/13 inclusive, the Premier League Rules applicable in those Seasons requiring a member club to include full details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts with its manager
And;
In respect of each of Seasons 2010/11 to 2015/16 inclusive, the Premier League Rules applicable in those Seasons requiring a member club to include full details of player remuneration in its relevant contracts with its players
Grouped and summarised below:
Rules Season Text Summarised
Q7, P7 09/10 10/11 11/12 12/13 No Club shall employ any person as a Manager unless and until: 1 the terms of the Manager’s employment have been evidenced in a written contract of employment between the Club and the Manager 2 the Manager’s contract of employment has been registered with the Secretary. Clubs must not hire a manager unless the manager's employment terms are clearly stated in a written contract, and this contract is officially registered with the league's Secretary.
Q8, P8 09/10 10/11 11/12 12/13 Contracts of employment between a Club and a Manager shall: 1 include the standard clauses set out in Appendix 8; 2 clearly set out the circumstances in which the contract of employment may be determined by either party. Employment contracts between a club and a manager must include mandatory standard clauses and specify the conditions under which either party can terminate the contract. Appendix 8 outlines that the manager must follow the rules of relevant football organisations, obey reasonable instructions related to commercial agreements, and resolve any disputes through arbitration or mediation.
K12, T12, T13 10/11 11/12 12/13 13/14 14/15 15/16 Full details of a Player’s remuneration including all benefits to which he is entitled whether in cash or in kind shall be set out in his contract. A player's contract must clearly list all the payment and benefits they receive
K20, T29, T18, T20 10/11 11/12 12/13 13/14 14/15 15/16 Particulars of any Image Contract Payment in respect of the Player shall be set out in the contract with his Club Any payments related to a player’s image rights must be clearly detailed in their contract with the club
The first two key rules relate to manager remuneration, and this is specific to the contract of Roberto Mancini. Mancini was the club’s manager from 2009 until 2013, and the allegations center around leaked emails that suggest he was paid £1.75 million annually as a consultancy fee for UAE based club Al Jazira on top of his £1.45 million salary at City.
For his part, Mancini has stated “I have paid my taxes, it's all above board. So I don't think anyone will be in touch” when asked about the case.
The second two rules are player remuneration and relate to Yaya Toure. The League alleges, again based on the leaked emails, that the club did not disclose all payments to the player, and that payments were made via his agent, Dimitri Seluk, during his contract with the club.
Seluk has stated “I know what has been said about Yaya's contract with City - and what I can tell you is that absolutely everything was done very cleanly, very honestly and with full transparency. Nothing was done under the table.
Toure was at the club from 2010 until 2018. He originally signed a five year deal, before signing a new contract in 2013 taking him up to 2017. He signed his final 1 year deal in 2017. These allegations relate to his first 6 seasons.
Compliance with UEFA regulations
This section simply relates to the wording of the Premier League rules which state that clubs competing in European competitions must comply with UEFA’s rules in addition to the Premier League’s.
The league states:
In respect of each of Seasons 2013/14 to 2017/18 inclusive, the Premier League Rules applicable in those Seasons requiring a member club to comply with UEFA’s regulations, including UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations
Once again I’ve presented them grouped and summarised below:
Rules Season Text Summarised
B14.6, B15.6 13/14 14/15 15/16 16/17 17/18 Membership of the League shall constitute an agreement between the League and Clubs and between each Club to be bound by and comply with: - the statutes and regulations of UEFA Each club agrees to follow the rules and regulations set by UEFA.
This rule breach seemingly relates to the period of time that was not ruled as time barred within UEFA’s case, and is not related to the original settlement between the club and UEFA, but does include the 3 years of the settlement agreement up until UEFA declared City to be compliant. Presumably the Premier League have included these to link to UEFA’s allegations of financial discrepancies related to the Etihad deal. It is unclear how much this could stick, given that CAS ruled that there was insufficient evidence of wrongdoing.
It feels amiss of the Premier League to charge the club with breaches of a rule that had already been thrown out by CAS, so I can only assume that they feel that the club have either breached other rules related to financial fair play, which doesn’t seem to be the case, or they are using the non-cooperation fine handed out by CAS to bring these charges forward.
Compliance with PSR
The Premier League have also charged Man City with breaching profit and sustainability rules. These are the rules that Everton and Nottingham Forest have been docked points for recently and relate to the annual accounts clubs must file to prove their compliance.
The league states:
In respect of each of the Seasons 2015/16 to 2017/18 inclusive, the Premier League Rules applicable in those Seasons on Profitability and Sustainability
I’ve laid these out below, grouped again, and summarised. It should be noted in the below that any reference to T, T-1 and T-2 refers to the current season, previous and 2 seasons before.
Rules Season Text Summarised
E52 15/16 Rules E.53 to E.59 shall apply with effect from Season 2015/16. The following rules will apply
E53 15/16 16/17 17/18 Each Club shall by 1 March in each Season submit to the Board: 1. copies of its Annual Accounts for T-1 (and T-2 if these have not previously been submitted to the Board) together with copies of the directors’ report(s) and auditors’ report(s) on those accounts; 2. its estimated profit and loss account and balance sheet for T which shall: 2.1. be prepared in all material respects in a format similar to the Club’s Annual Accounts; and 2.2. be based on the latest information available to the Club and be, to the best of the Club’s knowledge and belief, an accurate estimate as at the time of preparation of future financial performance; and 3. if Rule E.56 applies to the Club, the calculation of its aggregated Adjusted Earnings Before Tax for T, T-1 and T-2 in Form 4A By March 1st each season, each club must submit to the League's Board: Their financial accounts for the previous two years, along with reports from directors and auditors. A forecast of their profit and loss and balance sheet for the current year, ensuring it is up-to-date and accurately reflects expected financial performance. If required, a detailed calculation of their earnings before tax for the current and previous two years
E54 15/16 16/17 17/18 The Board shall determine whether consideration included in the Club’s Earnings Before Tax arising from a Related Party Transaction is recorded in the Club’s Annual Accounts at a Fair Market Value. If it is not, the Board shall restate it to Fair Market Value. The Board will check if earnings before tax reported in a club's annual accounts from transactions with related parties are valued fairly according to market standards. If they aren't, the Board will adjust these values to reflect the fair market value.
E55 15/16 16/17 17/18 The Board shall not exercise its power set out in Rule E.54 without first having given the Club reasonable opportunity to make submissions as to: 1. whether the said consideration should be restated; and/or 2. what constitutes its Fair Market Value. Before the Board can adjust any values in a club's financial statements, they must give the club a chance to present their case regarding whether adjustments are necessary and what the fair market value should be.
E56 15/16 16/17 17/18 If the aggregation of a Club’s Earnings Before Tax for T-1 and T-2 results in a loss, any consideration from Related Party Transactions having been adjusted (if appropriate) pursuant to Rule E.54, then the Club must submit to the Board the calculation of its Adjusted Earnings Before Tax for each of T, T-1 and T-2. If a club's combined earnings before tax for the past two years show a loss, after adjusting any related party transaction values as necessary, the club must then provide the Board with a detailed calculation of its adjusted earnings before tax for each of the three years
E57 15/16 16/17 17/18 If the aggregation of a Club’s Adjusted Earnings Before Tax for T, T-1 and T-2 results in a loss of up to £15m, then the Board shall determine whether the Club will, until the end of T+1, be able to pay its liabilities described in Rule E.14.7.1 and fulfil the obligations set out in Rules E.14.7.2 and E.14.7.3. If a club's adjusted earnings before tax for the current year and the previous two years total a loss of up to £15 million, the Board will assess whether the club can pay its debts and meet its obligations through the end of the next season as specified in other rules.
E58 15/16 16/17 17/18 If the aggregation of a Club’s Adjusted Earnings Before Tax for T, T-1 and T-2 results in a loss of in excess of £15m then the following shall apply: 1. the Club shall provide, by 31 March in the relevant Season, Future Financial Information to cover the period commencing from its last accounting reference date (as defined in section 391 of the Act) until the end of T+2 and a calculation of estimated aggregated Adjusted Earnings Before Tax until the end of T+2 based on that Future Financial Information; 2. the Club shall provide such evidence of Secure Funding as the Board considers sufficient; and 3. if the Club is unable to provide evidence of Secure Funding as set out in Rule E.58.2, the Board may exercise its powers set out in Rule E.15. If a club's total adjusted earnings before tax for the current year and the previous two years show a loss greater than £15 million, then the club must: Submit future financial plans and estimated earnings up to two years beyond the current season by March 31st. Provide proof of secure funding as the Board requires. If the club can't show they have secure funding, the Board may take action as outlined in another rule.
E59 15/16 16/17 17/18 If the aggregation of a Club’s Adjusted Earnings Before Tax for T, T-1 and T-2 results in losses of in excess of £105m: 1. the Board may exercise its powers set out in Rule E.15; and 2. the Club shall be treated as being in breach of these Rules and accordingly the Board shall refer the breach to a Commission constituted pursuant to Section W of these Rules. If a club's total adjusted earnings before tax for the current year and the previous two years show a loss greater than £105 million, then: The Board may use its authority as outlined in Rule E.15. The club will be considered as having broken the rules, and the Board will report this violation to a special Commission as per Section W of the rules.
E60 15/16 16/17 17/18 The sum set out in Rule E.59 shall be reduced by £22m for each Season covered by T-1 and T-2 in which the Club was in membership of The Football League. If a club was a member of The Football League in the previous two seasons (T-1 and T-2), the amount mentioned in Rule E.59 will be decreased by £22 million for each of those seasons
A lot of this is not specific to anything the club will have breached, and is again a criticism that has been levelled at the Premier League for not being focused enough on charging the club and instead trying to go for as much as possible. Eg rule E52 in the 2015/16 season isn’t really something that would be up for debate, and rule E60, which refers to seasons spent outside the Premier League for adjusting the £105m 3 season PSR limit.
I don’t believe that the club has breached a lot of these rules specifically, and that the Premier League has just grouped PSR as a category together to hit the club with multiple charges. It is likely that the key rule in this section is E54, which discusses related party income and fair market value. This is an important one for City, as the leaked emails have been presented to show the club receiving money from sponsors with funds that have come directly from ADUG, Abu Dhabi United Group, owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan and with an 81% stake in the CFG (City Football Group) that comprises the club.
City have always argued that these sponsorships are not related parties, something that has been previously accepted by both the Premier League and UEFA in separate agreements related to PSR and FFP under their rules. It is likely that the key here is whether the emails imply that they should in fact be counted as related parties, and therefore whether they represent fair market value.
For the other rules in this section, it is unlikely that anything of substance will be proven or even sought.
Cooperation with the investigation
In addition to the above 4 sections, which all covered rule breaches related to the hacked emails, the Premier League charged the club with non-cooperation with their investigation. This does not relate to the breaches themselves, and so you will notice that the seasons are all after the Der Spiegel investigation.
The charges are:
In respect of the period from December 2018 to date, the Premier League Rules applicable in the relevant Seasons requiring a member club to cooperate with, and assist, the Premier League in its investigations, including by providing documents and information to the Premier League in the utmost good faith
Grouped and summarised:
Rules Season Text Summarised
B16, B15 18/19 19/20 20/21 21/22 22/23 In all matters and transactions relating to the League each Club shall behave towards each other Club and the League with the utmost good faith. Act honestly and fairly towards other clubs and the league itself
B19, B18 18/19 19/20 20/21 21/22 22/23 Without prejudice to the League’s powers of inquiry under Rule W.1, each Club shall comply promptly and in full with any request for information made by the League (including, for the avoidance of doubt, any such request made pursuant to a demand from a statutory or regulatory authority). Clubs must quickly and fully respond to any information requests from the League, even if these are prompted by a government or regulatory body's demands
W1 18/19 19/20 20/21 21/22 22/23 The Board shall have power to inquire into any suspected or alleged breach of these Rules and for that purpose may require: 1. any Manager, Match Official, Official or Player to appear before it; and 2. any such person or any Club to produce documents. The Board has the authority to investigate any suspected or confirmed rule violations. For this, they can: Require managers, match officials, other officials, or players to appear before them. Ask these individuals or any club to provide relevant documents.
W2 18/19 19/20 20/21 21/22 22/23 Any Manager, Match Official, Official or Player who fails to appear before or to produce documents to the Board when required to do so under Rule W.1 shall be in breach of these Rules. Anybody who does not comply with Rule W.1 is in breach
W12, W15 18/19 19/20 20/21 21/22 22/23 It shall be no answer to a request from the Board to disclose documents or information pursuant to Rule W.1 that such documents or information requested are confidential. All Clubs and Persons subject to these Rules must ensure that any other obligations of confidentiality assumed are made expressly subject to the League’s right of inquiry under these Rules. No Club or Person shall be under an obligation to disclose any documents rendered confidential by either the order of a court of competent jurisdiction or by statute or statutory instrument. The Board can request documents or information even if they are confidential. However, clubs and individuals are not required to disclose anything that is legally confidential due to a court order or by law. Clubs and individuals should ensure any confidentiality agreements acknowledge the League's right to inquire.
W13, W16 18/19 19/20 20/21 21/22 22/23 All persons who are requested to assist pursuant to Rule W.1 shall provide full, complete and prompt assistance to the Board in its exercise of its power of Inquiry Anyone asked to help must fully, quickly, and completely help the Board with its investigations.
Three of these are your meat and potatoes non-cooperation charges, which the Premier League will have charged City with for not providing documents when requested. A couple relate specifically to individuals within a club, but otherwise these breaches will be the most likely to stick, similar to how they did at CAS.
Man City have maintained that they do not need to cooperate with the investigation which they state as being based on illegally obtained material and have stated that they do not trust the investigation.
Rules B15, B16 make another appearance relating to acting with the utmost good faith.
When will this hearing take place?
We don’t really know. The panel has been chosen and are presumably deliberating, but as with cases of this size and with so many documents, they take time.
League CEO Richard Masters has recently stated that the case will “Resolve itself soon”, which is badly worded and has led to speculation that the club and league are seeking a way out of the case following the charges being thrown out. This is unlikely, as it would be in the interest of both to end proceedings as quickly as possible.
There have been criticisms towards the Premier League regarding the secrecy around these hearings - it is actually within the Premier League’s rules that these occur in private:
Rules W70 and X25 state: The proceedings of an arbitration convened under this Section (W/X) shall be confidential and shall be conducted in private.
Aren’t Man City just stalling?
Not really, no. The club have been charged with non-cooperation by the Premier League for their initial investigation, but there is nothing the club can do to further postpone the hearing taking place. The time required is simply because of the magnitude and seriousness of the allegations put forward by the league.
The original BBC article alleged that City were “dragging their feet” - but this is not something that stops the league handing out charges, and isn’t something that will change the timeline of the independent panel’s investigation.
Punishments
So let's say that City is found guilty - what are the likely punishments to be? The answer is complicated, as it completely depends on what charges are ultimately determined to be warranted. Talk of points deductions amounting to the thousands are pure hyperbole. The specific breaches agreed by the independent panel will influence the size of any punishment.
Given the seriousness of the allegations - essentially fraud across multiple years involving the club, sponsors, auditors and governing bodies - there must be a high bar of proof. With such a high bar also comes a high punishment if the club is deemed to be guilty. It is entirely possible that a proportionate punishment to such deceit would be expulsion from the league. This would however be the least of the club’s worries, as it brings into question the legality of the breaches with regards to individuals, HMRC and other organisations from which payments may or may not have been withheld or deliberately reported incorrectly.
Some of the above charges do not risk carrying any sort of point based punishment. The non-cooperation charges, for example, would be a monetary fine. It is also very unlikely that the league would seek to remove past titles. The scope and burden of proof that specific breaches directly correlated to titles would be too complicated.
Expulsion from the Premier League would require the club to apply to join another league, the EFL the most likely candidate. It would be at the discretion of the EFL whether they accepted the club into their league structure. Given the size of the club and the need to replace the 20th team in the Premier League, it would be likely that they would agree to include the club in their league system as a space would open up in the Championship.
Can the club appeal a decision?
Yes, there are avenues for appeal. That appeal will not go through CAS, as correctly reported, but would go to another panel. Sections W through to Z of the Premier League rulebook detail different types of appeals and tribunals for varying reasons. Section W is the section specifically referred to in the PSR rules (within section E of the Premier League handbook).
There is no Time Bar though in the Premier League
Well, kind of. There is no time bar specifically mentioned in the rules. The Premier League handbook, which you can read at https://www.premierleague.com/about/publications,does state (Rule A7) that “these Rules shall be governed by and shall be construed in accordance with English law. Strictly without prejudice to the arbitration and other dispute resolution provisions of these Rules, disputes relating to these Rules shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.”.
Essentially this means that any rules follow English Law, which itself does state a time bar for cases. This is typically 6 years for most cases, with some differences based on specific situations.
In the case of fraud this can vary, and may be the avenue that the Premier League tries to go down (which itself makes the evidence required to prove the case more stringent). For fraud cases, English Law states:
Time bar of 6 years from the date cause of action accrued
Or, if the cause of action is deliberately concealed, 6 years from when the fraud is, or with reasonable diligence would have been, discovered.
Should this be the route the Premier League has chosen then there will have to be a discussion to determine what period of time the charges can be applied to.
What about the length of grass?
There was never a charge about the length of grass. Such narrative about what the charges were came from initial analysis by people using incorrect versions of the Premier League handbook (as the rules change from year to year slightly, and those rules shift in their assignment. This is is why I have grouped them as such in the above tables). All charges relate to financial issues and non-cooperation in the league's subsequent investigation.
What about the Cease and Desist?
Rumours began last week that the club had issued cease and desist letters to individuals and organisations within the public domain related to the charges. As of yet there has been no evidence that anybody has received such a letter (although you’d question why they would publicise receiving one in the first place). It should be made clear that any cease and desist that may have been received by anybody would not prevent them from discussing the charges with which the league have brought on City. Any cease and desist letter is a demand that the recipient stops any activity considered to be unlawful - eg. in the case of this case it would be accusations levelled at the club that are not true. Examples would be the club being called cheats because they’ve done specific things that have not been proven to be true like a false statement or libel.
Can’t we just dock points now like Everton and Nottingham Forest?
Not really, no. Cases of this magnitude take time to deliberate and cross examine. There is no quick way of dealing with such a large case. The Everton and Nottingham Forest cases, by comparison, are simple breaches that can be quantified by simply looking at the submitted accounts, which for both clubs show losses that are above the agreed amount in Rule E53 of the Premier League handbook (and Rule E54 in Nottingham Forest’s case due to their recent promotion that reduced their allowable losses).
Neither club claimed to have not breached these rules, but merely tried to argue the case that their losses were due to mitigating circumstances, which the Premier League did not agree with.
Anybody questioning why analysis of so many historical charges takes longer than clear individual breaches shown on a balance sheet needs to consider whether they want a case to be resolved quickly, or whether they want it to be resolved properly, as the two are mutually exclusive.
Who wins?
Ultimately nobody wins. Reputational damage is guaranteed for either Manchester City or the Premier League depending on the outcome. It can also be argued that enough reputational damage has already been dealt to both organisations. This is often why a settlement is seen as a preferred option, as there is no long drawn out saga. The club have remained steadfast and stubborn insisting that there is no grounds for the charges and that they are innocent on all accounts. The league have been criticised for their handling of the matter and for other PSR breaches recently and don’t seem to be keen to back down in this case either.
There was also the accusation that the league had rushed through presenting the charges in order to disrupt the introduction of an independent regulator by the Government and to prove that it can govern itself. That has largely failed as the IFR (Independent football regulator) looks likely to be going ahead.
The best case scenario for the club is being cleared of all charges - unlikely due to the presence of those non-cooperation charges - a win for the club, but there will be large question marks over the Premier League’s handling, the time taken, the accuracy of the verdict and the secrecy involved. The club will also have suffered reputational damage up to this point, particularly from sections of the football fraternity who have already made their mind up.
The best case scenario for the league is trickier - it doesn’t want to be seen to be a light touch, but conversely it doesn’t want to be triggering the sort of chaos that points deductions and league expulsions might have on one of its most successful clubs of the last decade. In some ways, the league has already lost.
Closing Thoughts
There will be details that I have glossed over for brevity - there is a lot more information in some of the linked documents plus the Premier League handbooks that provides a lot more important context.
I hope the above proves useful to anybody interested in the finer details of the situation, but appreciate that it is probably beyond the scope of the kind of person who posts 115 memes and gets agitated by the lack of discussion around the charges.
There may be inaccuracies. If you spot anything then please let me know and I will make a quick amendment.
2024.05.13 08:28 Arathy12 What's the the most hurtful thing the family has said or done to Robert?
Robert was by far the most badly treated character on the show. As a severely neglected child by my parents I actually get trauma with the way Marie treats Robert.
I'll list a few horrible things the family has done.
• MARIE AND HER FAVOURITISM TOWARDS RAYMOND! And her pure negligence and ignorance towards Robert almost every episode. Emotional Incest is what Marie had with Raymond. (It's a wide topic.)
• The family always made fun of his height and made him feel bad when his height is actually so sexy.
•Always getting involved in his personal and dating life and somehow ruining it.
•The "Crazy Chin" episode when Marie openly admits to not caring about what Robert ate or where he was after Raymond was born. He infact got that chin habit due to her negligence.
•Not being excited enough for him when he became liutenant cos Raymond was having a tantrum and they didn't wanna hurt his feelings. Always drove me crazy.
•Making so much fun of him when he had that "bull injury" when it wasn't even his fault.
•Getting all his exes together to judge him.
•Marie ruining his FBI interview for her selfish needs. (Yes it was a sweet motherly moment that she was scared for his safety, but a horrible gesture to ruin his interview and embarass him.)
Even Amy's parents always picked Raymond over Robert.
I am sure there are way more, but these are my main ones.
Robert was genuinely a nice guy and didn't deserve the hate he got.
2024.05.13 08:28 YiMyonSin Belated Mother's Day Post for Amy Adams Strunk
I've been busy as of late moving back home for the summer, but that doesn't mean I haven't thought about an owner that many of us have dubbed "Mom": Amy Adams Strunk. Most outside fans seem to hate her for the whole debacle with the Oilers rights and who owns what colors, but this is not a lecture on copyright. Furthermore, her team's fans don't live in Houston, they live in Tennessee. With that in mind, let's dive into how she's done since she took over in late March of 2015.
NOTE: For this exercise, I will not include 2015 as she was largely stuck with Whisenhunt and Webster as the hiring cycle that year was long over by the time she took ownership of the team. Ergo, I do not think that including a year where she did not have control over her front office and coaching staff is entirely fair to her.
This table below demonstrates how she's done since 2016.
Regular Season Record (Win Percentage) 72-61 (.550)
Playoff Record 3-4
Conference Championship Game Berths 1
Winning Seasons 6
Worst Season by Record 6-11
Bottom 10 Finishes (Seasons w/ Top 10 Pick) 1
This doesn't even do justice to quite possibly the most defining characteristic of her ownership: she doesn't settle for mediocrity. For our team specifically, a massive shock came when Mike Vrabel was fired last January. He had previously led the Titans to four straight winning seasons and three playoff berths but really struggled the last two postseasons he was in despite a pass rush that got 14 combined sacks in the two most recent playoff losses due to offensive ineptitude. This ineptitude was further highlighted in the AJ Brown trade, where we've been the only team in the last two years to never put up 30 in a single game. Jon Robinson was fired midseason following the reunion with AJ Brown the previous year despite creating a roster that got us to the AFC Championship, and Mike Mularkey's deficiencies became too glaring to ignore even for stumbling ass backwards into a playoff win (what let us bring in Vrabel to begin with). Many will claim that she's petty and backstabbing, but I'd be more terrified if these guys were not fired when they were. For instance, the Oilers debacle against Houston last year was the last straw following years of Vrabel chasing after Tim Kelly's mediocrity and saw some of the most braindead playcalling you will ever find, one of myriad incidents of Vrabel losing his touch as a coach in those close games and discipline fraying (top 10 in penalties taken the last two years). Jon Robinson had flunked three straight drafts before facing the axe. All in all, she is only as patient as she needs to be. While Callahan and Carthon still have yet to etch their legacies here, both of their presences demonstrate her willingness to take bold risks to improve her team, the former in the need to correct our lack of a competent passing offense since the days of run and shoot and the latter to bring a modern outlook to a front office that has whiffed hard on several offseasons and many more beforehand.
Houston fans and nfl can claim whatever they want about Strunk. While I would discourage you from trying to argue about the Oilers rights due to how unpopular relocation is in general, especially how this team left Houston and how she's looking for a new stadium instead of trying to renovate the rotting old Adelphia like Bud did for the decayed Astrodome first, that does not diminish what has happened in the eight years that she's been in charge of the league. Ever since 2016, we are the only team in the AFC South to not finish with a top 5 pick that came from our season. Furthermore, this is the first season under her that we had a top 10 pick at the end from our season's efforts. For reference, let's take a look at other teams in the AFC South and see how often they've had top 5 and 10 draft picks from their seasons.
Houston Texans: 4 (2017, 2020-2), 4
Indianapolis Colts: 2 (2017, 2022), 2
Jacksonville Jaguars: 3 (2017, 2021-2), 5 (2017, 2019-22)
In essence, we just don't bottom out under her watch. In this timeframe, only Jacksonville has gone to the AFC Championship alongside us, and we're tied with them and Houston for total playoff wins (Indy hasn't won the division and only one playoff game lmao). The timeframe also has us tied with Houston for most playoff berths at four while Indy and Jacksonville have two apiece.
All in all, there are better owners out there, and our future looks murky. Nonetheless, calling Strunk a bad owner paints an incomplete picture of her leadership. The morality of fighting about the Oilers rights remains dubious put charitably, but we've for the most part been a solid if not outright good team under her ownership, and I would hardly have anyone else owning this team.
2024.05.13 05:55 THEWatson272 Battletech mass transport to space
So I am currently in a campaign where I have over the past 5 or so years set up a massive mining and refining operation capable of producing anywhere between 300,000 US tons, 272,000 metric tonnes, and 800,000 US tons, 725,000 metric tonnes, of fully processed metals ingots every day. I cant seem to find a method to get my newly produced metals into orbit fast enough and was wondering what methods there might be that I could have just overlooked.
I have looked into getting a dropship but even assuming a 1 hour round trip from the surface to my space station, and leaving out the loading / unloading times, even the mammoth could only reasonably transport about 168,000 tons a day.
I have also thought about utilizing a space elevator sense the planets gravity is about .38 or just above mercuries, has a denser atmosphere than Venus, and is as cold as pluto.
for those wondering I have spent just shy of 1 billion cbills on my strip mining project. Edit: I've also spent 2.5 billion on my space assets so far and that number is about to sky rocket.
TLDR: What is the highest tonnage per cbill ground to space transportation method?
EDIT: Well that was more interest than I was expecting. Im going to go over most all of the questions I saw.
what forces are you defending with? Roughly 120 battlemechs and about 240 industrial mechs + an orbital defense platform loaded down with 50 ppc's
How many people live on the planet? Do they require goods or have the abilty to use the ignots? No one lives on the planet they commute to and from the space station using shuttles. Another planet in system is currently providing food and water for everyone in exchange for 5% of my exports.
Can't you just hire a fleet of ships? Technically yes but the only player with a massive fleet is currently at war with me. And the great houses dont normally come this far out.
Would you be able to make products and ship those instead of just raw metal? whats the space station used for? The space station is both a habitation and Manufacturing station as it was cheaper to build my secondary production in space then on this death trap of a planet.
Do you have a buyer lined up? Several.
Are you playing Factorio or Satisfactory or some other factory building game inside the Battletech universe? Factorio. Specifically with ALL of the angel's & bob's mods enabled.
Solar powered rail gun? Solid ingots are perfectly suited for massive acceleration. The atmosphere is to dense and the solar field would be large than the planet thanks to the distance to the sun.
OP is about to become House Watson and by sheer economic might will bring about the next Star League. Or is about to be attack. If I wanted to become one of the House's in the campaign I'm in I would need complete control over the other three planets in the system I'm in. That and the paperwork sucks. I'm much happier being a payed vassal. And the great houses don't come out this far into the peripheries.
Jumping out of system being a bottleneck? From what everyone in the campaign assumed so long as you could physically dock to a jump ship the Upper weight limit was 100,000 tons. Assuming I can make a docking collar with thrusters for around 5,000 tons and just weld it to a massive cargo container with maybe 90,000 tons of materials at most I'd need 10 of these things and one fleet tender dropship for all the crews to restock supplies from and I don't need these things to move quickly so a sub 1g thrust is fine. The jumpships we use in our games have 25 hardpoints and make 1 jump a day (no its not lore accurate but it kept the math and design quirks to a minimum.) So I should always be able to export everything I make.
Not asked yet but "You're at war? with who?" I am at war with the "United Merchant Fleets" a 3 player democratic group but they spend most all their profits on buying more dropships and not mechs so they don't have a ground force as of now and their dropships are all civilian grade with low weapon counts.
And finally. Profit margins? I make back everything I've spent so far assuming a pure cbill price every half a week. Being the only player to go into heavy industry pays well.
2024.05.12 23:38 Away-Advance5047 Should I choose Georgia Tech or Cornell for CS?
Recently got admitted to Cornell off the waitlist for CS. I'm out of state for GT. My parents can comfortably afford either school, but I do have a younger sibling who'll enter college in a few years too.
Georgia Tech Pros:
Cons:
Cornell:
Pros:
Cons:
To be honest, I kind of vibe with GT as a school more. However, Cornell is an Ivy League, and I was wondering if it will open any doors that GT doesn't. I know both schools are great for FAANG too, but I was wondering which has the advantage in terms of entrepreneurial environment as well.
2024.05.12 23:32 Peter_Partyy Max Res Titanium Shield Graveyard
Having a go at CoC DD Inqui before quitting league, I want to craft a titanium spirit shield with life, fire damage, +max chaos and +max res. Is there a graveyard that can boost +max resistances? Or is pure luck with res mod rolls?
Or do I go for a phys reduction, +max chaos shield? (SSF btw)
Thanks
2024.05.12 23:26 Ravel_02151981 Season #3- "Dead Irish Writers"
Continuing my series of occasional posts, where I discuss one episode for each season.
Season #1: "5 Votes Down" Season #2: "Somebodys Going to Emergency, Somebodys Going to Jail."
It is the First Lady's birthday, and POTUS has scheduled a quiet, intimate get-together for her and about 1,000 of their friends. FLOTUS is preoccupied because the New Hampshire Medical Board is about to render a decision on whether or not to discipline her for improperly treating her husband. Meanwhile, Sam helps his old physics professor get a funding bill passed, Toby drinks and debates with Lord John, Josh and Amy spar over the number of female employees in the campaign, and Donna finds out she is no longer American.
Two things that really standout about this episode: First is the glamor. This isn't a gritty look at a typical day, it is beautiful people in beautiful clothes having a party. Second, it takes place over a single evening. I am always a fan of episodes that are in a compressed time-period like a single day or evening.
My thoughts:
  1. As I said, everyone looks glamorous, but Amy just looks OUTSTANDING in the dress she wears in this episode. Talk about making a dog break his leash. My old college roommate and I used to watch TWW and jokingly refer to her as "the hot feminist." (Which I'm sure Amy would love.) Plus, she is as feisty as usual. I don't understand why seemingly everyone on this sub is always down on Amy. I love her mind and I love her shoes (and her dress.)
  2. Speaking of Amy, I love the little touch of the way Amy is playing with Abigail's dress when they are chating and drinking upstairs. Such a nice, subtle way to show their closeness and friendship. It don't know if that was the choice of Mary Louise Parker or the director, but it was a good choice.
  3. Speaking of drinking, I would absolutely love to go drinking and discuss philosophy/politics with Tody and Lord John. I don't know if that is a sound stage or an actual location, but that bar they were at was a great location. It is just my scene too. Not too fancy, not too divey, not too loud. I even tried Lagavulin after seeing this episode. It's not bad, but I am surprised that they are not drinking Irish whiskey in the scene. The way the scene shifts from international politics to general philosophy is just great.
  4. Speaking of international politics, this is one of my favorite episodes, from my favorite season, but the Donna-Canada storyline didn't really work for me. I honestly think Sorkin used it to add filler-time to the story. I'm 99% certain that if Canada and the U.S. adjusted the border, everyone would be granted reciprocity without having to do anything. Also, it wasn't particularly interesting or funny and I don't see how it tied in theme-wise.
  5. Speaking of theme, I'm no Einstein, but my understanding of physics is that there are two types of physicists- applied and theoretical. Theoretical physicists are interested in the "pure" knowledge of the field, while those in applied are conerned with applying knowledge gained to solve real-world problems. Theoretical science is also known as pure science. It seems like Dalton Milgate is a theoretical physicist. ("There are no practical applications, Sam!") He looks at problems purely at their root. Sam, while not a physicist, is more applied. ("I have to find something from this to use against him.") Dalton isnt just "pure" in his science. He wants to cut through all the B.S. and get to the heart of the matter. No hotel, screw the fruit loops, you're wasting time. After a littlr resistance, Sam takes this thinking to heart and is able to advance the bill.
This theme of "pure vs applied" comes up again and again this episode. POTUS wants to make an erudite and witty toast, but Charlie (essentially) says "screw the fruit loops," just tell her you love her. Abigal tries to justify her ethical lapse, when Donna cuts to the chase and says that "you knew what you were doing was wrong." Lord John has to "apply" his government's policy on Brendan McGann to his conversation with Toby, but finds a way to let his true views in ("You can't, you have to invite him.") In the end, those who are pure and are able to "(forget) the fruit loops" and tell it like it is, are shown to be the wiser.
Still not sure what Donna's subplot has to do with all of it.
Thanks for reading. Please let me know what you think of "Dead Irish Writers."
2024.05.12 22:30 lsolophobia 27 [M4F] NA PST/CST/Online - Hoping to find the one for me!
Hello all,
I am looking for an amazing woman who is 20+ in age that is interested in being friends with the intent of an LTR coming out of it if the connection is there. Let's mutually obsess over each other, spend lots of time together laughing, playing pc games, and watching shows/movies along with doing all the “cringe” couple stuff like having pet names for each other, matching pfp, and making everyone jealous with how lovey-dovey we are. Then in the future, we can take it IRL when the time is right so we are not purely online. I prefer if you were on the West Coast or Central because of time zones, and it will be easier to plan visits, but I don't mind if you are in another state as long as you are in NA and are willing to put effort into an LDR with the potential of us seeing each other eventually. I know physical attraction is semi important too, so I have no problem exchanging pictures early and if we end up not vibing, we can be close friends!
Some things about me: ➯ Mixed Asian ➯ Laid-back demeanor & chronic yapping ➯ Currently taking a break from college and focusing on work ➯ Loves music ➯ Naturally affectionate and highly value communication ➯ Loves TikTok/Memes and my humor is broken. I laugh at everything and at the wrong times. I like dark humor as well. ➯ Devoted and fully committed when in a relationship ➯ Loves the “cringe” couple stereotypes. From pet names and mutual obsession to matching profile pictures, we will make others envious of how affectionate and loving we are. I also lowkey like when a girl is clingy/obssessive/possessive.
When I'm not working, I'm playing games. My current main games are Valorant, Fortnite, FF14 (new), and League of Legends (peak masters)/TFT. However, I have many more that I periodically play, such as: Honkai Star Rail, BG3, WoW, Genshin Impact, Guild Wars 2, Eternal Return, Apex Legends (I'm new), Dead by Daylight. There are many games I want to play more of listed here, though. I also have different survival games and co-op games, such as It Takes Two. If you are interested, my DMs are open, and we can move to disc eventually. Please read the post and please only dm if we have main games in common & you want a potential relationship!
2024.05.12 21:19 DarthNayn Should the RLCS have KC and Top Cougars redo their series in case it was a big fluke?
No disrespect to Accro, RelatingWave, and Simas, I'm a firm believer that Top Cougars beating KC is a huge fluke and robs Atow, Rise, and Vatira of truly accomplishing what they're capable of. I've spent the last twenty minutes in pure disbelief and it just doesn't make sense to me. I've spent the entire Double Elimination Stage watching KC play great Rocket League it's just not fair.
If KC lose again I will face that Top Cougars deserved the win, but I am just 100% sure it was a fluke and does a big disservice to KC and the RLCS.
