Hey guys, so I have obviously been living under a rock, i loved using my bearcat to listen into authorities frequencies and weather channels, but my area went to digital some time ago, never really wanted to spend big money on digital equipment so just didn't really worry about it, I have since discovered the sdr and am led to believe this device can listen to digital frequencies, was wondering how it would go with encrypted frequencies, would love to get into tinkering around with this device, I live in Australia just for the record lol but I just wanted to ask the community for a good starting device, should I buy of ebay or another site ? Any advice or opinions, possible links to noob friendly videos, your knowledge will be muchly appreciated. Any other cool things this can do ?

2024.04.29 08:20 Annual-Ad-3061 Uniden HomePatrol Scanners: A Hobbyist's Review (After a Year of Use)
Hey Reddit,
I'm writing this post to share my experience with Uniden HomePatrol scanners
(See Price on Amazon), after using them for a good year now. I've always been fascinated by radio communication, and scanners seemed like a cool way to listen in on what's going on around me – police chatter, fire emergencies, maybe even some air traffic control (though that's a bit more restricted).
Check the Price of Uniden HomePatrol Scanners on Amazon Unboxing and Setup I opted for the Uniden BCD495: URL uniden bcd495 scanner. It seemed like a good balance between features and affordability. Setting it up was pretty straightforward. The scanner itself is built well, feels sturdy, and has a clear display. Programming can be a bit daunting at first, but there are plenty of online tutorials and forums that helped me get the hang of it.
Scanning in Houston Living in Houston, there's always a lot going on. It's been interesting to tune into police scanners and hear about what officers are responding to in my area. I've also picked up on fire department dispatches and even some ambulance calls. It's definitely not an everyday thing, but it's given me a new perspective on the city and the work these services do.
Beyond Public Safety The scanner picks up more than just public safety channels. I've been able to listen to some aviation frequencies, which is pretty cool. You can also program in railroad communications or even some business channels, though those can get a bit dry.
Check the Price of Uniden HomePatrol Scanners on Amazon Overall Impressions Overall, I've been really happy with my Uniden scanner. It's a great way to learn about radio communications and get a sense of what's happening around you. It's not going to replace your daily news feed, but it's a fun hobby that's given me a new appreciation for the different radio frequencies buzzing around us.

2024.04.22 20:00 soylent_geek Trying to rekindle my youth and spark interest with my kids.
Hi,
I remember the fun I used to have as a kid listening in on the various emergency calls in my area. I wanted to spark some interest with my kids and give it a whirl again.
Just purchased an old Bearcat BC80XLT and would like to use it to scan my area.
Every time I try to put a frequency in, it comes back with ERROR.
Is this just way too old of a scanner to work anymore or do I need to find a different source for frequencies?
I am located outside the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area if that makes a difference. (Halton)
I am very new to all of this, so be gentle
At this point, it would just be great to hear "something" from this radio.

2024.04.10 20:09 Legal-Excitement4432 Purchased my first Ham HT - Wouxun KG-Q10M
I am currently studying for my Technician exam. I have been monitoring Ham frequencies for years on my Uniden scanner. Currently I have a Uniden SDS100 Handheld scanner to monitor Ham as well as public service. So I promise I won't transmit until I have a Ham license.
I decided on my first HT to be the Wouxun KG-Q10M and I purchased it on BuyTwoWayRadios. I like that I can import repeater data into RT Systems software for easy programing and less searching and manual software entry. I plan to get a mag mount for the car.
Who has experience with this radio? All the reviews I read were positive and I see they fixed the "dirty radio" problem with early editions.
I hope to be talking to some of you soon.

2024.04.01 17:38 MobileElephant122 Break one 9 for radio check please….
I have four cobra 29LTDs and a newerish Uniden bearcat and another brand I’ve never heard of and will have to go check and fill in the answer in the comments section, it’s starts with an S like submarine or superior or something, anyways a Wilson 36”ish magnet maybe a Wilson 2000 antenna which I’m told is the best of the two I have, the other is a fiberglass magnet mount with a red tip. A really nice Astatic old mobile mic and a 2013 Chevy pickup truck with regular 12volt computer charger type “cigarette lighter” style power ports.
Im reaching out loud and clear by all reports but the only people I can hear clearly are the guys pushing big wattage. Everyone else sounds like they are talking on a tin can and wet string from the bottom of a deep well.
I used to run a CB back in the 70s and had zero trouble hooking up and fine tuning to get out a couple miles or so. And that’s all I’m looking to gain now, maybe 5 miles clearly without a bunch of poppin and crackling cause my ears are crap after five decades of abuse from chain saws and dirt equipment.
I need to hear with my window down and trucks going past.
I don’t yet have an external spkr but that will definitely be my next purchase.
Im just trying to adjust the gains and noise blanker and ASL crap and I just can’t remember how to do it.
All advise is appreciated and yes I’m considering going to some kind of hard power source rather than the power point cause that seems to be an issue for some.
I have no idea which of these radios are Best but they are all crap if I don’t set them up right.
Again, your feedback is most appreciated, thank you
