2024.05.12 20:03 Efficient-Forever341 In memory of... (Do You remember who died on May 13, 2014 in Chicago Fire?)
In memory of Leslie Shay 10 years ago, on May 13, 2014, Leslie Shay (played by Lauren German), the fan-favorite character of the NBC studio's series Chicago Fire, died in the finale of the second season. True, viewers only learned about this when the third season started. The death of the character was followed by an uproar from the audience, the popularity of the series (which had been on the rise until then) and the number of viewers decreased, because many people stopped watching the series due to Shay's death, including the author of this post (I reached the end of the third season).
Due to the anniversary, I started researching on the Internet to better understand why Shay's character was destined for this fate, and using quite a few references and also abundant with
spoilers, I will share with everyone what I came up with in this post. I will also write my own opinion.
(I apologize for any grammatical errors, I did not write the post in English and I created the English version with the help of Google Translate) Shay's character probably doesn't need to be introduced to anyone, but if you do, this link nicely summarizes why everyone loved her so much.
https://screenrant.com/chicago-fire-leslie-shay-lauren-german-best-traits-facts-trivia/ When I started researching the topic, I read that despite the fact that Chicago Fire is already in its 13th season, Shay remains one of the most loved and most missed characters to this day. However, later, when I wrote the post, I could not find the source again, if anyone can send a link to this topic, please do so.
It is clear that if the series loses such a popular character, it will have an impact and will shake the viewers. Well, it turns out, more than anything in the show's 13 seasons. I found a lot of sources to prove this:
1) People's Choice Awards, USA, 2015 / Favorite TV Character We Miss Most
In the above category, Shay made it to the top 5, which no one else did later.
https://www.imdb.com/event/ev0000530/2015/1?ref_=nmawd_ev_1 2) Most shocking TV deaths of all time
https://tvline.com/lists/shocking-tv-deaths/leslie-shay-chicago-fire/ Shay is also included in the top 100 list above, as well as two other characters from the entire One Chicago franchise, Elias Koteas as Alvin Olinsky and Yuri Sardarov as Otis. Thus, Shay was on a list with the likes of Teri Bauer (24), Lance Sweets (Bones), Bobby Ewing (Dallas) or Ned Stark (GoT)
3) And this is what ChatGPT answered when it was asked which of the characters in Chicago Fire had the most heartbreaking death (short quote from the answer):
"The most heartbreaking character death was definitely Leslie Shay. Oh, it was gut-wrenching! Shay, played by the incredibly talented Lauren German, was such a beloved and integral member of Firehouse 51....."
https://onechicagocenter.com/2023/07/24/heartbreaking-chicago-fire-death-according-ai-not-otisi/ 4) If I use the Google Search service, the answer to this search will also be Shay:
Question: "chicago fire most heartbreaking death"
Answer: "Leslie Shay died in a fire"
Searching the internet, it became clear to me that it wasn't just Shay's death that shocked viewers, but also the fact that the show's creators made the decision to get rid of Shay's character. This decision raised many questions and problems, which I will go through below. There are a lot of posts and articles on the internet about why Lauren German left the series, but in fact they were all based on a single, otherwise amazingly short interview that was made with Matt Olmstead. I found this at this link:
https://tvline.com/interviews/lauren-german-leaving-chicago-fire-shay-killed-off-549958/ If anyone has seen or read other interviews or other information, please share them.
I read a lot of comments under the link above, and I would like to thank everyone for expressing their opinions there. I read a lot of things in the comments that I didn't even think of at first, but it's good that they brought them to my attention, because I completely agreed with them.
- The creators of the series killed off the third female character in 2 seasons, who was also one of the main characters.
- Killing a character directly just for the sake of dramatic effect is already quite a boring solution
- Olmstead praised Lauren German's talent a lot in the interview, but then why didn't the producers try to keep the actress?
- Olmstead stated that there will be no flashbacks involving Shay. But in the first episode there were 4 (from Severide, Dawson and Boden)
- The LGBT community also received a slap in the face, as an openly lesbian character was killed off. This is also a solution that has been seen many times and is boring.
- Shay and Severide's relationship was one of the prominent aspects of the series, which made it worth watching, in fact, according to many, it was such a novel and well-constructed thread that the creators of the series were praised for this. After Shay's death, without the dynamism of their relationship, the series became boring.
- Opinions also suggested that perhaps the goal was to attract the right target audience with Shay's lesbian character, but they no longer wanted to retain this group of viewers, so it was a harsh decision made from a business point of view by the creators
- Olmstead defended the decision by saying that they could bring more and more storylines into the series, while without Shay's character, the exact opposite was true.
- He also claimed that all the characters were assessed on equal footing when the decision was made. In comparison, they immediately replaced Shay with a new character who looked like her, was not a lesbian like Shay, and was 10 years younger. Because Lauren German was born in 1978, Kara Killmer in 1988. The message of this change was extremely bad in the eyes of the viewers
- There was a commenter who suggested that the change was made so that the new character could be romantically involved with one of the male characters, and this actually happened during the third season when Brett and Cruz got together
- If the purpose of Shay's death was to show how unpredictable life is, they should have paid much more attention to the details. The first part of the third season is full of mistakes and unrealistic solutions
- It is strange that the interview only mentions in a few sentences what Lauren said to the fact that the creators of the series essentially fired her. In connection with this, it occurred to me that something else could have been behind the decision, which was never made public, but of course this is just a hunch.
- As far as I know, Lauren German was the only main character in the history of Chicago Fire who did not leave the series by her own decision
There were many other strange things about Shay's death that could be found by searching the internet. I will also go through these in order.
A) Let's return briefly to the fact that the popularity of the series decreased during the third season. This can be checked here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_(franchise))
Based on this, it can be definitely stated that whoever made this decision, for whatever reason, caused damage to the series.
The data:
First season, ranking 51, number of viewers 7.78M Second season, ranking 31, number of viewers 9.70M Third season, ranking 47, number of viewers 9.65M The first season brought good numbers, and it can be seen from the data that its popularity increased for the next season. However, the ranking of the series dropped almost to the initial level by the third season, and although the number of viewers did not decrease so significantly, the reason for this is probably that, in addition to the viewers who left, there were still those who only joined at that time. Another interesting fact is that the third season is the only one where Dick Wolf is mentioned as showrunner. It is possible that during the third season he wanted to be more involved in the development of the story, and it was his decision to pull something unexpected in the series, so Shay's death is due to him. Here is a show-like interview with the whole team, in which I found it strange that Dick Wolf was given the central place on the stage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2tCrma7t5o&t=2s It was as if they suggested that he was the most important person. It can be imagined that he always had the final say in making decisions. As a counter-example, I saw an interview with the actors of The Avengers, where one of the directors was present, and the Russo brother remained nicely in the background, since everyone was interested in the actors, Iron Man, and Thor, etc. However, this was not the case in this interview. Obviously, I'm not a behavioral researcher, so I can't draw important conclusions from a single interview.
Of course, it is also easy to imagine that the writing team made an independent decision, but did not count on how much the omission of Shay's character would turn fans away from the series. Thus, Dick Wolf was the savior when he was forced to intervene personally in shaping the story to mitigate the damage. Of course, it is also possible that these events and what I wrote about the video above have absolutely nothing to do with each other.
B) It's also strange how many storylines with negative outcomes were connected to Shay's character during the first 2 seasons. She was seriously injured several times (the ambulance accident in the first season, the hospital bombing in the second season), and she went through several crises in her personal life. Her first love, Clarice, left her, and months later she broke Shay's heart a second time. Devon tricked and robbed her. When Severide and Shay wanted a baby, she failed to conceive. A patient of her, Daryl, whom she sympathized with, committed suicide in front of her eyes, and Shay also fell into depression after that, while her paramedic partner and friend, Dawson, did not care about Shay's mental breakdown at all. During the two seasons, she was almost hit by a car, almost shot, stabbed with a syringe, which could have been contagious, and there must have been other cases that I left out of the list. Then came the third season, where basically the firefighters who were inside a huge explosion were not hurt at all, while Shay, who was on the ground floor of the building, died in this explosion. On the part of the writers, this amount of negativism was perhaps already excessive and quite unrealistic (like the case of Doctor Romano in ER, who was hit by the helicopter). It's like the creators didn't really like the character, or didn't want to do anything with her other than build viewers' empathy / sympathy for Shay so they could switch it to a dramatic twist when the time was right. But that's the opposite of good storytelling in my view. My opinion is that the reason for Shay's popularity is not to be found in the "grateful" storylines written for her, because we will find it only and exclusively in the fantastic performance of Lauren German
C) It's very strange that Leslie Shay was a main character in the first 2 seasons, but if you look at the Instagram page of the series (more specifically, the entire One Chicago franchise), you can see that Shay's character received very little attention.
https://www.instagram.com/nbconechicago/ At the time of writing this post, there were 3588 posts on the site. I took the trouble to check if my hunch was right and scrolled through to the posts about the first 3 seasons.
Number of pictures where Shay is clearly visible among many people in a group picture: 15
Number of photos where Shay is with 1-2 other people: 27
Number of photos featuring only Shay: 6 Yes, I didn't write a bad number, among 3588 pictures a total of 6 individual photos were given to one of the main characters of the first 2 seasons of the series, perhaps the most popular character of the series to date. Although Lauren German is a famously reclusive actress, she even has more selfies on her Instagram than that
D) It's also very strange that in the third season they introduced a storyline that says Shay's death was caused by arson. Unfortunately, the execution of all this was extremely clumsy and illogical for me. It was already revealed during the first 2 seasons that Shay's parents are divorced, they live in two separate cities, and that she has no sisters. You could tell this from the fact that when Severide and Shay talked about who would take care of their baby if something happened to both of them, Dawson's name immediately came up. It's illogical that Shay wouldn't have said her sister. In fact, the whole thread felt more like a readjusting to placate fans who would channel their frustration and anger over Shay's death onto the arsonist in the story - instead of the show's writers.
E) It occurred to me that maybe Lauren's relationship with her colleagues was not good, and for the sake of peace, the creators got rid of the character. This suggestion is probably the furthest from reality, I have a lot of hits that prove that Lauren maintained a very good relationship with her co-stars even later. Here are some examples of this

"I miss her like crazy," he said about Lauren German. "She was a great scene partner. Great actor. Someone to work with and someone to confide in. It was an honest relationship. We hung out off the stages, too. I didn’t take that too easy.”
F) It's also interesting that I've been able to find almost nothing online about what Lauren thought about what happened to Leslie Shay's character. What we do know from Matt Olmstead's interview is that she joked that she wasn’t going to miss the Chicago winters (she’s a California girl). Other than that, this is the only reaction from Lauren that can still be found, it's completely professional and polite, and perhaps it's no coincidence that she thanked the fans the most for their support
https://cartermatt.com/133627/chicago-fire-season-3-lauren-german-speaks-shay-premiere-shocke "Hello beautiful people! I want to say thank you to NBC, Dick Wolf and the entire team for letting me be a part of such an amazing experience. I have to say I've never been around a more gifted, special, heartfelt, funny and loving cast and crew as with the CF gang. The show gave me so many priceless gifts. I'm forever grateful. I mostly want to thank the fans for their support and love on this journey. You all are so beautiful. It was a great honor to portray Shay. I love her: her spirit, her flaws, her honesty. And most of all she brought me the most genuine & meaningful interactions with you all, the fans, & my heart swells with gratitude. Thank you, thank you! So much love to you all.”
F) UPDATE I just found this article, which for some reason didn't come up amongst the search results for the past few weeks.
https://chicago.suntimes.com/2016/1/22/18408021/chicago-fire-alum-lauren-german-having-devilishly-good-time-on-lucifer In this article, Lauren told a sweet story that I believe happened during the filming of the pilot episode of Lucifer:
Given her time on “Chicago Fire,” guest starring on “Chicago P.D.” and now on “Lucifer,” has German changed the way she reads about or watches crime stories in the news?
“I think so, but mainly I think my experiences have made me have even more respect for first responders than I did before I went to Chicago. Sure, I always respected them and paid attention when I’d see a fire truck going by or hear about the cops getting the bad guy.
“But after the training we went through with the firemen and paramedics in Chicago — plus now having worked with homicide detectives to prepare for ‘Lucifer’ — I can’t tell you how much I respect these guys and women.”
German found herself the butt of a few jokes during the filming of a huge scene in Los Angeles near the Dolby Theatre — the site of the annual Oscars show.
“There were helicopters flying overhead, there was all this commotion, but we also had real firemen there. It wasn’t too long after I left ‘Chicago Fire,’ so they were yelling at me, ‘You went to the dark side!’ They were really kidding me about going from playing a paramedic to playing detective.
“Of course the cops on the scene were yelling just the opposite — telling me, ‘No! You’ve come to the bright side!’ I loved that, because that’s the fun friendly competition between the firemen and police officers. It’s kind of like Army vs. Navy.
“But of course, at the end of the day, everyone’s on the same team. These people are my heroes.”
In addition, she also talked about her previous work here, based on which it can be stated that the rumors that she wanted to quit are completely unfounded (I considered this suggestion so unfounded that I didn't even include it in my post). She also confirmed what was also discussed in point E).
German did admit she misses “the whole Chicago crew I worked with — and the wonderful fans in Chicago too. Everyone in your town is so great.”
The actress said she considers co-star Monica Raymund “my best girlfriend” and also keeps up with fellow “Chicago Fire” castmates Taylor Kinney and Jesse Spencer “quite a bit.”
“In fact just the other day, Monica asked me that after I wrap [the initial 13 episodes of] ‘Lucifer’ to come over [to Chicago] for a few days and hang out with those guys. So I may do that around the end of February.”
If so, it’s likely German and her “Chicago Fire” pals will make a beeline to the Palm restaurant on East Wacker Drive.
“Taylor and Jesse and I lived in the same building [on the New East Side], and we’d go to the Palm like three times a week. It was so cozy there. We even had our own regular little booth!”
End of update
In regards to the oddities above, I can even imagine that Lauren's agent or agents had a hard time agreeing on a possible contract extension, and because of this, the creators preferred to get rid of the character of Shay. If that was the case, we will never know. However, if the decision-making really took place in the way and according to the criteria as stated in the Matt Olmstead interview, then it can be seen in retrospect that this was an extremely bad decision by the studio and that the writing team made a huge mistake
I am slowly coming to the end of my research, but before that I would like to discuss the mistakes that the writers made in the first part of the third season - perhaps these mistakes could indicate that they were very hasty during the implementation, or that they did not think through at all how to put together such an episode well. When an average viewer saw this episode for the first time, the shock was guaranteed by it (believe me, it HITS HARD), in this way the creators achieved their goal, but it was enough later to think about what happened, and the shock was already replaced by completely legitimate indignation of the viewing public.
Regarding the mistakes, for the sake of fairness, I also have to say that I consider 4 things to be extremely outstanding from the first 2 seasons of the series:
1)
The visual implementation of the series was amazingly fantastic, as if you were watching a 45-minute movie, and it still stands today. I don't know if this changed after the third season, but I assume not, since the series is still active today
2)
Atli Örvarsson's music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ABsDFMJr2E&list=PLXT2pBWM8DxfN4znwe3esSqg4LtBzlQz8
3)
The actors Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund, Lauren German, Charlie Barnett, David Eigenberg, Eamonn Walker, Joe Minoso, Yuriy Sardarov, Christian Stolte were all fantastic in their roles
4)
The writers did something really brilliant when they built Severide and Shay's relationship. The way these two people moved mountains just out of love as a friend to help the other was simply wonderful. The relationship between the two of them was central to the show, which is why it was so painful and infuriating at the same time that the writers didn't think it was important enough to keep it going after 2 seasons. So I didn't consider the series important enough to continue watching after the third season either, or to start anything else from the One Chicago group.
Mistakes in S03 E01:
Devon's character:
- In the last 2 episodes of the second season, it was revealed that Devon might not be as a bad person as we thought. The writers hinted at the possibility that maybe Shay could finally find her happiness with her. Whether Devon had really changed, whether she was telling the truth, was never revealed after Shay's death.
Shay's death:
- Why didn't the paramedics wear helmets when they entered a potentially dangerous building? In other episodes, the characters paid attention to this, but here they generously forgot about it
- During the first flashback, we saw that they started to treat an injured person. When the explosion occurred and Shay was lying on the ground, the injured person was disappeared.
- The firefighter (played by Preston James Hillier) who ran into the building before the explosion also disappeared
- In the flashback, we saw that Dawson was thrown backwards by the shock wave of the explosion before the ceiling collapsed. Shay, on the other hand, sat still, unaffected by the shock wave
- The firefighting team was in the middle of the explosion, the only injury in comparison was a broken leg. Andy Darden died instantly in the Pilot episode, according to the script, when a house fire started in a similar way.
- Shay's CPR was interrupted to take her to the ambulance. At the same time, the one who could have taken care of her was Dawson, who was next to her, and Shay herself, maybe even Mills, who had a broken leg. So why was it important to take Shay to the ambulance, if not because it gave the scene a dramatic, albeit illogical, ending?
- Several people (e.g. Cruz, Otis) in the episode did not behave like those who recently lost a friend, and this could not be the fault of the actors, but rather of the script. The situation was similarly strange in the Pilot episode after Darden's death
- Shay said that she has a good relationship with her parents, so it's very strange that they didn't apply for Shay's things, but Casey and Severide collected them a month and a half after Shay's death. Not to mention the later invented sister
- When Severide looked at a photo of Shay before playing the video, it can be seen that the creators did not bother to take a real photo, but instead used a screenshot from the first season.
- It's quite unlikely that Dawson would pick up a diary a month and a half later that still had Shay's signature on it, and the signatures were completely different
Again, in the interest of fairness, Severide's flashbacks, Severide and Shay's video were flawless. Just like the gesture of putting Shay's name on the ambulance door in the middle of the season was a great idea from the writers
Final thoughts:
This is how far I've come in my research. Unfortunately, I didn't find any reassuring answers, only strange things. If there was something else in the background why Shay's character had to die, it will probably never be revealed. If the whole truth was told in the Matt Olmstead interview, then in my opinion the creators of Chicago Fire made the biggest mistake of their lives by firing Lauren and letting the Shayveride friendship vanish. Plus, Leslie Shay's character didn't deserve such fate. Anyway, the first 2 seasons were a fantastic experience for me.
Although Lauren couldn't have known it at the time, she was doing very well, because after being unemployed, she auditioned for the role of Chloe Decker in the series Lucifer. Here she joined the team that involved Tom Ellis, Kevin Alejandro, D.B. Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Rachael Harris, Scarlett Estevez, and later Aimee Garcia, Tricia Helfer, Tom Welling, Inbar Lavi, Rebecca De Mornay, Dennis Haysbert and Brianna Hildebrand. The rest, as they say, is history. Lucifer was the biggest series of 2021 by racking a whopping 18.3 billion minutes of streaming across the year making the series the most-streamed show not just on Netflix, but among the entire crop of streaming originals. Lucifer was voted the best fantasy series of 2021 also, and Lauren German became very, very worldwide-famous.
https://netflixlife.com/2022/01/26/lucifer-best-netflix-show-2021/
After Lucifer ended, Lauren retired from acting, making her last appearance in November 2023 at an event in Chicago, the Heaven and Hell Convention. Here, of course, she was hilarious again, or to put it stylistically, funny as hell, and she simply proved why she was the actress who played Leslie Shay back then

2024.05.09 07:25 le09idas Apt Situation Question
I moved to Brooklyn last October for an apt I thought was a steal. At that moment in time, I got a slightly basement apt around the corner from a train station and a bunch of restaurants and other useful places. The deal was a 12 month lease for 1900 a month with all utilities included.
But the first few weeks were rough. I had to pay out of pocket for new cabinets for the bathroom because the ones left were heinous and old. That was around 300 bucks.
Supposedly the exterminator came but literally the second day a big Bertha cockroach was in my kitchen. I had to get my own spray which I use once a month in the bathroom and kitchen.
Winter wasn’t too bad for me but I had company over and the heat didn’t work too good and my gf was so cold. I needed to talk to a neighbor who controls the heat to ask if the heat was on and she said that it was. And then there sprung a leak in the steam pipes that nearly ruined my computer. I ended up moving my whole setup to the opposite wall.
Now comes the more imminent discomfort: summer. I am a big, hairy dude and if there is anything I need, it’s AC. Fans won’t cut it. I ask about that and I am not really allowed to used window ACs. I needed to buy a big portable Black and Decker AC, around 400. I try to run it and a whole side of the apt loses power. I tried this about a month ago and the old both the landlord and her henchman, her brother, about this. The brother says he’ll find someone to take a look at the circuits and help figure out how to run the AC. I have been waiting a month and still no response.
I am most definitely overpaying for the actual value of this apt. I understand that back then, in Oct 2023 1900 was on the lower end but then again I dont even have laundry onsite. My lease was for 1 year but I seriously can’t afford any longer to remain in this place. I have about 6 months left.
I have found plenty of places worth less but seemingly have more perks that are beneficial to me like onsite laundry and at least heat and hot water included in rent.
But I am still at the mercy of the lease. And a seemingly unconcerned and faraway landlord that is pretty much ineffectual unless you borderline harass them. I maybe had the luxury of semi decent maintenance at previous apt I live at but there isn’t even a person to clean up the place, that is on me and my neighbors.
I even sucked it up and asked the landlord if she’d be willing to bump my rent down if I offered to pay electric and gas and extend the lease to a couple of more years. She responded by noting that electric is included but I know from experience that during winter time I definitely don’t use as much electricity. And she asks me if I am unable financially to afford the apt and I attempted to explain that that wasn’t issue it was literally what I was paying for. We ended the conversation with her saying she had to ask her husband. This was about a week after my AC debacle and I haven’t heard from the landlord since. I would try to keep in touch with either landlord or her brother but I have been dealing with other matters as of late.
I read over the lease agreement and looked for anything to at might help me but it seems to just chalk up to the landlord decides what you need to pay and you must pay it within the length of the lease.
I saved describing my landlord last because I feel that if they are the main source of my problems. She always answers my texts and takes my calls. She is ok to get a hold of. But she literally hires creeps to maintain the property. Or at least to come and check whenever they want. And on top of that, no one ever comes around to clean up the litter or trash. Mind you, I understand this isn’t maybe usual but I mean for an apt where each tenant is at least paying 1900 a month in rent I would like someone to at least come rake the leaves and make sure the garbage cans are usable.
I am not sure if I should just bite the bullet and take a hit from my security deposit for ending the lease early or wait it out and find someplace a month or two before moving out. I would really like some help on this. Is there anything I can do that I am not aware of in this situation to not suffer too much financial loss and to peaceably end the lease so that I can start looking for a new apt?
Tl;dr
I moved in to a Brooklyn apt with a crappy landlord that overcharges for the apt and I need to know what options if any I have to break the lease and move to a new apt.

A tale that tells you about the roles and sacrifices of the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the establishment of the Islamic community. reef Listed below are some of the most important places you should visit inside Masjid Nabawi while keeping their history in mind on your next trip to Medina, the city of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Rowdawrasool (SAW) Also known as the “Tomb of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” Roda Rasool (SAW) literally means the garden of the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT. Located on the south corner of the Ottoman prayer hall, Roda Rasool (SAW) is the oldest part of Masjid Nabawi. Houseoffatima (RA) As you walk forward, the door located on the eastern side of the Roda Rasool (SAW) marks the House of Fatima (RA), the dearest and youngest daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The House of Fatima (RA) is considered a very sacred and essential place to visit inside Masjid Nabawi. Mehrabtahajjud In line with #Babejibrail and right behind the Roda Rasool (SAW) is the sacred location where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to offer #Tahajjud Salah. The Praying Spot of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) The fifth one, down from the #pillar_of_Aisha (RA), there is a pillar in line with Bab Jibrail, which marks the exact spot where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to perform Salah. Riyadhuljannah Situated between the Pulpit and Roda Rasool (SAW) is ‘Riyadhul Jannah,’ also known as the #GardenofParadise. Mimbar (Pulpit) While delivering long sermons, #Prophetmuhammad (PBUH) would get exhausted. And so, to feel a bit relaxed, he (PBUH) would lean against a palm tree that was located near the spot. Mehrabenabawi Mehrab-e-Nabawi marks the location from where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to lead the congregational prayer after the #Qiblah was changed to #Masjid-Al-Haram. Mehrab-e-Nabawi was built by Umar bin Abdul Aziz. Abuhurairah (RA) The House of #Abdullahbinumar (RA) Son of Umar bin Khattab (RA), Abdullah bin Umar (RA) was one of the most devoted companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and a prominent authority in hadith and law. His house is located inside Masjid Nabawi on the eastern side of the Mehrab. The #Houseofabubakr (RA) Abu Bakr (RA) was a very close friend and companion of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He was one of the first people to accept Islam. During the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the door of Abu Bakr’s (RA) house was situated adjacent to the western wall of Masjid Nabawi. Houseofothmanan (RA) Usman (RA) was the third caliph of Islam and the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The land of his house can be located in the open area within the boundaries of Masjid al Nabawi. It is the same house where Egyptian rebels assassinated Usman (RA). 2024.04.26 21:37 ThrowItAllAway9799 Planning for Double Decker? Baby changing stations? Scheduling?
I'm trying to plan for Double Decker with a baby. Ideally would like to stay until the last show but having a baby in tow makes that significantly harder to plan.
My questions are:
1.) Best place to park? I'm not opposed to taking the shuttle. I just can't remember where it is.
2.) Are there changing stations around the square? This is a huge factor for going or not.
3.) Can you bring a cooler? Is there any quick place to get a beer or are they all sit down restaurants or bars with covers?
4.) Any other factors I'm not considering?
Can any of you help me plan the day?

2024.04.24 13:22 SuccotashOwn1716 Worst Restaurant In Greenpoint?
What is the worst restaurant in Greenpoint that you are surprised hasn’t closed yet? My vote is that Raizes place on Nassau & McGuinness. I’ve eaten at or ordered from there at least 3 times, and each time the food was dry or flavorless (or both) and definitely not worth whatever I paid. The place never looks very busy, except maybe for Euro soccer. I guess that is keeping them afloat.
Second prize to the Manhattan 3 Decker. How is that place so popular now? The food still sucks.

2024.04.13 01:29 Mister_BovineJoni Camp shows in the vein of Batman (1966-1968) and V.I.P. (1998-2002).
TLDR: V.I.P. is a great fast-paced entertaining show, it's not really "quality" tv, and not a 100% comedy, but the embraced intentional campiness makes the show fun, it's campy the way Batman was campy, even though there are many campy shows I can't seem to recall any that are fairly similar to these two (besides some sitcoms/100% comedies), maybe you could suggest some?
...
Hi, so I was thinking what makes a given show so entertaining to me, and a lot of examples share some form of campiness. Think about it - basically every live audience sitcom is filled with aspects that wouldn't fly in non-comedic show (sets, characters, situations etc.). But that's all sitcoms' convention, so I'm not asking about any show that can be described as campy, I'd specifically love to know what people who know/like Batman and/or V.I.P. can recommend as being similarly campy.
Batman was basically an archetype of camp in live-action tv, flashing "bam!" cards on screen when Batman punches a thug, colorful sets that don't try to pass as real places, characters that are more cartoony than an actual cartoon characters, or situations like in one of the earlier episodes when Batman goes to a night club wearing ofc full-on Batman clothing and claiming that he doesn't want to draw attention to himself, at the same time dancing and looking like he found Cheech&Chong's weed-van. Yes, it was a comedy/lighthearted adventure, but the campiness adds another layer to the show's humor.
V.I.P. was a mix of action and parody, but never full-on comedy, I actually like this example a lot more than Batman, as the show is generally fast-paced, while Batman's episodes, I don't mean to offend the fans, feel really stretched, it dates the show a lot, as many other shows from that time were also lacking "dynamics" that is much needed in comedy and/or action genre. Anyway - V.I.P. was trying to appeal mostly to male teenagers (hence Pamela Anderson as MC, loads of bikini shots etc), there were guns, chases, explosions, stunt action etc., but no blood, swearing or nudity, and with the camp aspects the show being cartoony it was a rare mix that worked really well, well... not for everyone, as the show isn't known as "quality" tv (4,2 rating on imdb) and somehow many hate the series. Describing the show in one sentence - it was like a mix of Burn Notice and Sledge Hammer, plus loads of fanservice (a lot of uncanny, over-the-top elements that make the show one of good camp examples, so one-liners, colorful outfits and sets, Baywatch-style montages at times...). Hell, in the fourth episode, even before the series went on full-camp, Pamela saves Bill Maher hiding him in a bubble bath with her... Then there's a bomb in the restaurant, and totally straight-faced conversation between waitress and one of the MCs: Waitress: "Is everything all right, miss?" MC: "Yeah. There's just a small bomb on the underside of my chair. Have to diffuse it before it takes out half the block. No biggy.". Or another conversation that is even more ridiculous: MC1: "Do you know how easy it is to change an interpol file? I change an interpol file more often than I change my underwear." MC2: "Really?" (...) MC2: "Hacking into c.i.a." MC1: "Use F4. I have it on a script.". It's not even 24's "open the socket", in V.I.P. it literally works: press F4 = hack into cia. It is comedic, but it's mostly an action procedural, and ridiculous campy aspects makes me laugh like "wth am I watching" (but in the good way).
There are many other examples, some in older posts here, some on tvtropes... But really haven't found one close enough to those two shows, many campy shows are aimed at kids (Lazytown, Pee-Wee's Playhouse etc.), which is apparent in the dialogue/humor, I'm looking for "normal" series, not a kids' show. I think Atlantis High is a cross of both worlds, it's camp, but different kind of camp. I love camp aspects in True Blood, like in season 2 there was Jason's Fellowship of the Sun subplot, or the craziness in town, which led to big laugh when some of the main characters came back from a trip unaware of what was happening, can't remember but it was like "we leave for a month and this is what happens". But that's just one part of the show, it's mostly not as humorous unfortunately. Gotham is similar in that, some aspect fit perfectly to what I'm looking for, but the show overall don't. Doctor Who, Red Dwarf etc. are quite theatrical shows and there lies the camp aspect, but these shows are not similar to these I mentioned above. Riverdale is way closer, but I just couldn't stand the CW melodrama/romance aspects, while at it - many CW shows can be described as campy, but none are campy the way I'm looking for. Insatiable, Scream Queens or even Desperate Housewives can be called campy, though I wouldn't call them that, I could explain why, but it wouldn't be interesting (even if anyone is reading this, and not the first paragraph only). Lexx became very campy at some point, Childrens Hospital and its spin-offs, or Decker are different type od camp, they're certainly not what I'm thinking of when thinking "camp" (it's like an imitation of camp). Baywatch was campy, but it was also quite not-good tv, it doesn't keep me entertained, though I'd agree that it's in the ballpark of my examples... Yeah I know it's very specific "request", but tried to provide as much info as possible, so maybe someone who also loves camp could give more detailed suggestion.
Feel free to recommend anything that might fit, even if it won't fit my taste then the comments could help someone else looking for similarly camp shows in the future. Thanks in advance.

2024.04.04 19:20 mancmadness So, including venues that are open or long gone, describe your ideal 24 hours in Manchester.
Mine would be: Classic triple decker breakfast toast from Lou Macari's and a nice walk around Dunham Park.
Lunch from the sadly closed Cocotoos Italian restaurant on Whitworth Street. Amazing lamb and lemon meringue pie and guided walking tour around the city.
Dinner at 63 degrees.
A snooze at Hotel Gotham before a night at The Boardwalk or The Limit.
Over to you.

2024.04.02 14:40 Intelligent-Toe-8340 Dinner party. Run idea.
The new fixer for the group hires a crew to film the evening where the political elite of Neo-Tokyo will gather. The thing is, they're serving dinner... Panda. There are few of them left in the world, and for the organizer it is a way to demonstrate their power and resources, as well as to make a small show. And since the event will bring together many prominent figures, including those from the Big Ten, the fixer sees it as the perfect compromise and blackmail material.
(Yes I stole the idea from Helium-3, you can kick me if you want, I thought it was a cool idea).
Details:
Mr. Tanaka is a waiter from (Plug since The golden place is the only known prescribed restaurant in Neo-Tokyo, but it's Chinese and that's unacceptable for obvious reasons, I think it's quite possible to come up with your own, say Misano's as another michelin starred place. However if you write your own ideas I'd be very pleased) who is due to be sacked soon and so he has decided to arrange a getaway by selling the information to a ficer. The fixer would only give his contacts if absolutely necessary or if the runners were very eloquent. All he knew he told the fixer, the place, the dish, and a couple of those who would be there. However, if he could be persuaded, he might try to arrange to have someone from the crew serve.
The dinner itself will not take place in the "Placeholder "Misano" VIP lounge as one might expect, but in the penthouse of one of the residential towers in Minato, bought out in advance and remodeled for the highest level of service. It's a B district, and done so to not attract much attention, unlike the regular meeting places of the top brass. (And so that runners have a chance ;D). Before starting, the neighborhood will be cordoned off under the cover of a police raid against local criminal elements, the abundance of police should provide some level of passive security. Fixer will easily organize admittance inside the cordon, but beyond that the runners are on their own.
In case of an emergency, there is a VTOL HTR brigade patrolling nearby, ready to show up at the first signal literally within a minute. There are also a couple of undercover snipers, drones, and mages on duty at the buildings nearby. The bigwigs are gathered here, and they think this place is safe, so it really should be. If there's even the slightest threat to their lives, all that power will fall on those running, so that's not an option.
There's supposed to be no electronics or recording devices inside, that's an arrangement between the guests, in practice it's... more complicated. Someone will have something for sure. In addition there will be area and directional jammers, with a couple of spiders on duty walking undercover through the local grids, and rigs ready to drop drones to intercept. (but until the signal is sounded, no birds in the air.)
Another level of security and service is organized by the yakuza, they have provided a staff of bunraku dolls with recorded personfixes and the best waiters, dancers and singers, all to be disposed of after the end of the event, some guests will even be asked to do it themselves, for control of course. Yakuza men patrol the streets looking for suspicious elements, they know the local neighborhood very well.
The chief cook and his assistant are the only "normal" people among the puppets, and he doesn't like what he's being forced to participate in, pressured with money and subtle threats. He's supposed to be able to help those running, as long as it doesn't involve risk to him.
Panda - from the local imperial palace, a local amateur and star that according to official reports passed away suddenly the other day, but in reality was secretly taken out and replaced with a grown chimera. Before dinner, she is guarded as a "princess" by the Yakuza. Those running up to the day before can take her away from them with no problem. This will earn them a lot of karma and she'll be bought by the Western Tiggers or the Triads. But there will be no dinner, Fixer will be extremely unhappy. On the other hand, the organizer will lose influence, the runners might feel good that they screwed some big shot.

Planning of the run
Here is the basic question, how would you plan a run, and what aspects and points should I as a mastermind prepare to make the task interesting in execution? Any ideas are welcome.
So far I have very little
- The fact that the deckers can get information that the Yakuza will do most of the organizing work, and that it is the Bunraku dolls will be in the service, so you can replace one of her with someone from the team.
But the thing is, I have Decker, Decker-Rigger, Mage, SteetSamurai. I don't know how to divide the tasks between them yet.
- Take any crazy team plan and improvise with a smile.
- Well, as said, the team just might fight off the panda.

Would you emphasize what's going on inside, the talk of politicians and top managers? Ideas?

2024.04.01 02:05 Inevitable_G Crocs Stock - Ticker CROX
Earlier today I saw a post asking if Crox was a good investment. I had started typing a reply, but it ended up being so long that I thought I should just make it a post, so more of you can see it and maybe use that info to further look into the company. Or critique me on it.
Please note I wrote this while on lunch with my family so please excuse my typos or if there seems to be a lack of structure.
As we’ve heard from many of our mentors, gurus investing is an art form, not science. I feel like many posts on this sub has been just focusing on the math and not the intricacies of a business. My goal is to balance both.
So I’ll start by saying the margin of safety for Crox has definitely shrunk due to the recent run up, but I still believe it can be a great compounder in the coming years.
It checks pretty much all the boxes for me that I look for in a quality company.
Great management - They’ve successfully turned the brand around and have had great execution. Year after year they’ve done what they said. The CEO holds about $100m worth of shares. Good to see him having skin in the game. And I think this is pretty much all of his net worth. Don’t believe he’s one of those billionaire CEOs.
Great margins - Gross margins of around 55-60%. Operating margins are 25%+. Both are industry leading.
FCF - It’s a cash flow monster. They’ve easily been making $700m plus in free cash flow and growing.
If debt is what’s holding some investors back, I think thats just lazy due diligence. Look at how much they’ve paid back in a short amount of time ($666m in 2023). And their cash generating abilities. Debt is not an issue whatsoever.
Their marketing scheme is A1. Checkout all the collabs they do. Barbie, Shrek, Cars, Buzz Lightyear, Naruto, Post Malone the list goes on and on. And It def seems to be working as it creates hype about the brand and brings new customers in. Once they buy a pair doesn’t matter if the reason was just a specific collab, they get sucked in. Because the comfort they feel is outstanding. And thats when the brand perception for the consumer starts to shift. Also, recently I saw Skechers make a similar product to the crocs classic clog and did a collab with Snoop Dogg lol. If the competition is blatantly copying you, you must be doing something right. Btw I don’t believe the Skechers thing has been a hit.
The biggest question for this company is that it’s a fad, but till I see signs of them slowing down, I have zero issues holding this stock. It’s not that difficult to do a heat check on these types of brands or products. Though it’s not a foolproof plan in any way, but you can still gauge the health of the brand, somewhat. 1. Look around you. I’m sure you can see more n more ppl wearing crocs. I see em at grocery stores, malls, gym, restaurants. They’re everywhere! 2. Social media - follow their Instagram and Facebook pages. The collabs that they do are extremely successful. To the point some of em sell out in mins/hours. Is this sign of a brand that might be losing customers or slowing down? I read soo many comments on their posts and ads that they do, and you know what I’ve seen to be a common comment on all? “I’ve never been into crocs but I can see myself rocking this ‘fill in the blank model’ ” referring to some new collab or model they’ve made. 3. Following their Website - I follow products that they have on their website and “track sales”. You can easily see which models are selling out quickly by seeing certain sizes being sold out and which are just sitting there. So far the new products they are coming out with are performing pretty well as many of the sizes are sold out. Another one are the reviews. Most products have near perfect ratings. Mostly because of the comfort factor.
Valuation This is my fav and what attracted me to the company in the first place. For a brand to be making currently around $750-800M in FCF, with industry leading margins, to be trading at valuation of $8.7b is not bad at all. In fact, it should be considered rather cheap.
Though the margin of safety has shrunk (btw my cost basis is around $82) the reason I think it still might be a good investment for ppl at its current price is because it’s still not valued fully (around 11 PE) and on top the potential for growth that everyone seems to be ignoring.
The potential I am talking about is their move to the sneaker industry and international growth. Crocs have recently come out with a shoe called the Echo Storm. It has been met with very positive reviews and has already been sold out in my sizes. Keep in mind this is no collab or anything. Just a shoe that they designed and that is selling extremely well. Seeing moves like this from the management gives me reassurance that the team is onto something big. And making the right moves. There are a lot of other things I can point out, for example their signing of Salehe Bembury, a designer who’s in with the “cool crowd”. Major celebrities/athletes have been seen rocking his Salehe Crocs. I’m talking Lebron, Travis Kelce etc. Salehe has also teased a new Sneaker silhouette with crocs. What about international growth? It’s in Double digits everywhere. China? Triple digit growth. Though we can say the lockdowns in previous year helped. Still amazing nonetheless, because look how Nike did their last earnings in China 🙃. Is Wall St. overlooking all this? Of course. But I can see once that sentiment starts turning that ok crocs isn’t a Fad, but not only are they not a fad, they are expanding into sneakers and now appealing to an even bigger market it’ll be no stopping the stock price. Being a $8.7b, how easy is it to be trading at $20-25b? Deckers currently trades at multiple of 34 and is valued at $24b. Crocs is currently making more money than them, and has better margins than them yet is trading at $8.7b.
For me it comes down to owning a company that is cheaply valued, that has great margins, awesome management, great cash flow generation, and they believe in buying back shares. On top the potential it has is tremendous. So it def seems like one of those situations where heads I win, tails I don’t lose much.
Oh and guess what? I didn’t even talk about HeyDude. You’re getting that company for free. I have full faith in management, because if they can take such an “ugly” and hated product like the Crocs and turn into a hit, imagine what they can do with a “normal” looking shoe and applying the same marketing playbook to it.
P.S. I like holding a concentrated portfolio. So def less than 10 stocks; more likely to be holding no more than 5-6. And crocs is a major part of my portfolio. If someone out there has a similar style and is interested sharing and bouncing off ideas please msg me. But only ppl that are serious and passionate about this stuff.

2024.03.28 21:58 FireGAPP TWIN RIVER COMMONS 2 BEDROOMS W/ PARKING RELET
Hi everyone! My roommate and I are looking to relet our apartment at Twin River Commons (45 Washington Street) in Binghamton for the Fall 2024-Summer 2025 school year (September-August). Keep in mind you may take over the lease for our apartment that I talk about or you could lease an entirely different unit the relet is for any position in Twin River Commons. For instance if you wanted a studio or 4x4 bedroom, that option is available as well through this relet opportunity and you would maintain the parking space associated with our lease. Also note there are NO MORE parking spaces in Twin Rivers for this coming year so our leases coming with parking spaces is vital. Our apartment is a 4bd/4bath with 1 roommate who is established and has a dog which he only keeps in his room and one random roommate TBD on your preferences on the roommate application. One of the rooms is cheaper at $1040 a month with a private bathroom but its directly across the hall from you and the other is slightly more expensive at $1100 a month but with its own private bathroom in your room, both room leases come with gated parking on site. All amenities are included within the rent, and the apartment has an in unit washedryer, central AC and heat, large windows that bring in a ton of natural light, and a shared kitchen/common area, and a view of the river and sunset. The apartment complex itself has many amenities to offer which include:
- All utilities included
- Two on site fitness gyms
- Free Starbucks coffee for residents
- Close to downtown restaurants and nightlife
- Next door to University Downtown Center and Blue bus stop
- Less than 10 mins from Binghamton University, Binghamton’s School of Pharmacy, and BU’s Deckers School of Nursing
- Onsite resident events and giveaways
- Study room equipped with free printing and whiteboards
- Multiple BBQ grills located in outside terrace that can be utilized at any time!
- Pet-friendly apartment complex
- Amazon lockers

2024.03.27 23:56 SnooDoughnuts785 London Trip Report
| Points | Cash | Value | Notes |
UA SFO-LHR RT - Mixed Y/J x2 | 143k | $657.28 | $9777 | Booked via ANA |
HR Churchill - 5 nights | 122k | $0 | $5,342 | Suite upgrade, 3k earned from bonus journeys |
HR Blackfriars - 3 nights | 51k | $0 | $1,489 | Upgrade to Club Access Room, 3k earned from bonus journeys |
Total | 316,000 | $657.28 | $16,607 | |
Dates: 3/16-3/25
Flights: UA SFO-LHR Y, UA LHR-SFO J
We booked close in and had a somewhat fixed outbound date so could not find any good J options on a Saturday. Luckily, I remembered the mixed class option on ANA, which allowed us to book the entire roundtrip for around the same price as the J return alone with Aeroplan (and slightly lower fees). Amex to ANA transfer took slightly more than 48 hours this time. I also called ANA to change the date of the return after flying the outbound. The hold time was crazy (3+ hrs) but the change process itself was very easy - took the agent less than 5 min and it was done.
Economy - Maybe it's bc I had low expectations but the outbound economy flight was surprisingly pleasant despite being completely full. FAs were friendly and food was much better than I remembered. 10 hrs is probably my limit in flying long haul economy, but it went by relatively quickly with wifi (paid with stranded UA miles that I would never use otherwise) and no annoyances around us.
Polaris - First time flying this product and after much research, I chose the bulkhead seats 9D and 9G in the mini cabin as row 1 was not available. The extra leg room was nice but can confirm that it gets a bit noisy with food prep/clean-up, chatty crew, and bathroom traffic. The seats were comfortable, and it was nice to be closer to my partner compared to reverse herringbone seats, but otherwise felt like a pretty normal business class seat - not sure what I was expecting lol but maybe it got overhyped in my mind from all the praises I've read/heard of the Polaris hard product. In contrast, I wasn't expecting much of the soft product but was pleasantly surprised. The Saks bedding is super comfortable, esp the amazingly soft pillow. The FAs were friendly and attentive. And the food - wow, I think United is truly stepping up their catering game bc it was so so much better than I was expecting. We had the egg/bacon/cheese souffle, french toast, white wine risotto, and wellington burger. The souffle was ok (a little too rich for me) but the other 3 were delicious. No ice cream sundae cart for breakfast service but did get a raspberry cheesecake and banoffee tart - both very good despite the latter being a bit too sweet for me. Overall a great first Polaris experience. I imagine I will be flying this again (looking to book for SYD-SFO later in the year) so I'm curious to try other seats and menus.
Lounges: - LHR United Club
There is no Polaris lounge at LHR, so you get access to the United Club and other *A lounges like Air Canada and SQ. United Club is the largest of the 3 with an open floor plan, lots of seating, a huge bar, a decent breakfast buffet, and a separate area with more drinks. Nice view of the apron. The breakfast food we had was pretty basic - hot foods, pastries, cold cuts, cereal, etc. It seems like they don't have enough bathrooms bc all were occupied when I tried to go before our flight. Overall a fine lounge but nothing amazing.
- LHR Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge
Smaller lounge but with really nice modern decor. The different areas are sectioned off in a way that makes them feel more private (compared to the very open floor plan of the United Club). It was also much quieter and emptier than the United Club. Breakfast buffet is similar but slightly smaller. However, the quality of the food is noticably worse - I've never had such chalky scrambled eggs and tough canadian bacon. There is an interesting waffle and croffle station, and the croffle was pretty good - but the wait can be long as the staff making it is not the most attentive and burned the first batch for us. Overall, a nice lounge to relax in but I wouldn't recommend eating here.
- Singapore Airlines Krisflyer Lounge
Tried to go but it's closed due to renovations.
Hotels: - Hyatt Regency London, The Churchill
Well established property in an upscale area of West London. It's about 15-20 min walk from Covent Garden, Buckingham Palace, etc. The closest tube station is about a 10 min walk away. The decor gives classic, traditional, old money vibes, similar to the clientele. Lots of older couples, businessmen, and some families. The service is polite and reserved but very efficient. I booked a regular room but was lucky to score a complimentary suite upgrade. However, it did take a lot of tracking on my part and messaging with the hotel to make it happen. They initially upgraded me to a club access room only for online check-in. I saw that a standard suite was available and messaged them to switch and they obliged. The Regency Suite King is not a true suite as the sitting area is not fully separated from the bedroom - there is only a partial divider. But as a couple, it was more than enough. The walk-in closet was really spacious and one of my fav parts of the room. Least fav part was the outdated bathroom with a comically low toilet, but it was sufficient. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was very quiet. Housekeeping was on point, and the room was always well stocked with like 10 bottles of water in the room at any given time. They also sent up these delicious chocolate wafers as a welcome treat. There are 2 club lounges - one for business purposes (no kids) and the other is for general use. There is a continental breakfast in the morning, afternoon tea with different cakes everyday (so good), and evening drinks with canapes (a staff member comes around with a tray of these for you to choose) plus a buffet selection of cold cuts, bread, cheese, and salad. Globalists can also have breakfast in the restaurant downstairs, which has a much wider selection of hot foods and made to order eggs. The gym is fully renovated and very nice. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. This is not the type of hotel I typically gravitate toward (I prefer new) but I was pleasantly surprised. We were so comfortable, well fed (I love cake), and the place is just a well-oiled machine with absolutely no hiccups in service. The only downside is that it's not the most convenient to get to/from the airport if you have a lot of luggage or there's bad weather. We ended up taking an Uber which cost $55 GBP or $70 USD.
- Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars
This hotel is really the opposite of the Churchill in every way. It's brand new with modern decor and very friendly staff. The clientele is younger and more diverse with perhaps even more families. The area feels like a business district with a lot of office bldgs. There's a tube station right across the street, and also lots of construction nearby. I was upgraded to a club access room as no standard suites were available, but it's relatively spacious for London with a small sitting area. They sent up macarons as a welcome treat and called to make sure the room was ok. There is no true lounge at this property so they alternate between the lobby lounge and the back of one of the restaurants as the lounge. Happy hour food comes out as a canape board of 3 appetizers + 1 dessert per person - the quantity was small but the food was delicious. Breakfast is served in the restaurant and is a standard spread with no a la carte items included.
Unfortunately, I started to notice issues pretty quickly. While new, the furniture seems flimsy and cheap. I normally would not care as long as it's functional, but the bed shook with every move, which made it difficult to sleep with a partner who tosses and turns a lot. The soundproofing is also poor, as we could hear street noise very clearly despite not facing the main street. There were also loud clanging sounds every morning between 5:30-6am - not sure if it was a garbage truck or construction. Hallway noise is also loud and clear. The thermostat is dysfunctional and requires setting at 5 degrees higher than what you intend but will randomly reset to a lower temp (echoed by another FT user so I'm pretty sure it was not limited to our room). While the staff are nice and well-intentioned, there are clearly staffing and workflow issues. Despite happy hour being very busy, there's only 1-2 staff members managing the entire area, and it could take up to 30 min before someone comes to take your drink and canape order. The staff working this area seem visibly overwhelmed. On our last evening, we witnessed a front desk manager apologizing to a guest for the long wait followed by a tense conversation between him and a staff member managing the lounge. While I couldn't hear the exact conversation, she gave off an exasperated vibe like "Yes I know guests are waiting but we're doing the best we can. What do you want us to do?" Housekeeping also has issues. On our first night, we came back to find the room mostly cleaned but the dishes and napkins from the welcome treat still on the table and the trash not taken out. We were also not given additional waters. A supervisor did come by to ask whether our room had been cleaned. We told her the issues, and she had someone come to address them. That person apologized profusely, took the trash in the trash can, but still left the empty water bottles beside it - very odd. On our second evening, we came back to find the room untouched. Since we were leaving early the next morning, we just let it be.
At checkout, the manager (Francis) asked me for feedback, and I briefly mentioned the lack of staffing during happy hour. He was very receptive and acknowledged that they are indeed struggling with staffing issues, requiring staff to do a lot of cross coverage. The happy hour workflow is also complicated by the fact that they don't have a real lounge. We ended up having a really interesting conversation about the state of the hospitality industry in the UK. He told me that the majority of hospitality workers are from EU countries, and tens of thousands left in the aftermath of Brexit (new visa restrictions) and the pandemic. Therefore, many hotels and restaurants are left with inadequate staffing, and, not surprisingly, the impact is even greater on new properties. It was very eye-opening and helped to make sense of my experience here.
Overall, I think this would be a fine choice for most casual travelers, esp someone who doesn't have status and will be out and about most of the day. But I think Globalists who expect a high level of service might be disappointed.
Misc Logistics: - Transportation
Uber is alive and well but expensive. Going between LHR and central London is about $55 GBP during non-peak times. It was $17 GBP between the 2 hotels, and we got to experience how bad traffic can be during rush hour.
Both tube and bus are convenient with contactless payment using US credit cards. We especially loved the double decker buses for the scenery and affordability - once you pay for a bus ride, any addl bus rides within the next hour are free. The tube lines on the west side are stuffy, small, and kind of dirty, but the lines toward east London are newelarger.
- Credit cards
We didn't need/use any cash while in London, which was amazing. All restaurants took credit cards, including the stalls at Borough Market. Chase was accepted everywhere but Amex was 50/50. For public transit, Chase codes it as travel so we earned 3x points on CIBP (would be the same with CSR or 2x with CSP). Waiting to see what my Amex biz gold codes it as (will update when it's posted)...

The video replay cut out for the first few minutes of the meeting so I wasn't able to capture everything that was said during the Invocation or Commission and Board Reports.
REGULAR MEETING
INVOCATION AND PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The invocation was led by Councilwoman Cole and the pledge of allegiance was said by all members.
COMMISSION AND BOARD REPORTS
- Board of Zoning Appeals (Cole):
- Destination Hilliard (Betts): Had a successful Bunny Hop over the weekend
- Environmental Sustainability (Vermillion):
- MORPC (City Manager Crandall):
- Planning and Zoning (Cole): No report
- Public Arts (Vermillion):
- Recreation and Parks (Cottone/Hale):
- Shade Tree Commission (Teater): No report
- Aging in Place Committee (Cottone): Gave a presentation to someone
RECOGNITION AND SPECIAL GUESTS
- Nick Gill, Transportation Director, MORPC:
Mr. Gill presented the 2024-2050 Draft Metropolitan Transportation Plan on behalf of the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission. He noted that the population in central Ohio is expected to grow to over 3 million people by 2050, up from 2.4 million people today, and that residential and job density is expected to increase as a result. Demographics and transportation needs are expected to change as well, and MORPC hopes to enhance transportation planning using a mix of federal, state, and local financial assistance. In addition to providing safe mobility options, MORPC want's to create sustainable neighborhoods that protect natural resources and reduce energy consumption.
Mr. Gill spoke about the current
LinkUS initiative and explained that they are currently planning for bus rapid transit corridors along West Broad Street, East Main Street, and along Olentangy River Road to Bethel Road and Sawmill Road. They are studying future routes to the airport and between south Columbus and downtown Columbus, and have plans for transit improvements along East Broad and Cleveland Avenue. MORPC desires to study potential connectivity between Hilliard and downtown Columbus which could include some combination of (1) the planned expansion of the Heritage Rail Trail and future connectivity to
the (paused) expansion of the Scioto trail, (2) inter-city passenger rail service (Amtrak), or (3) expanded and enhanced COTA bus service.
Mr. Gill said that MORPC was in the process of presenting this information to municipalities across central Ohio and is looking for public comment on the draft plan before its potential adoption in May.
Councilman Carrier asked about how much money would be going into studying transit to/from Hilliard, and noted that Hilliard has always seemed to receive less than other communities in the region (Dublin, Grove City, etc.) and had more gaps to fill when it came to transportation. Mr. Gill was unable to give a clear dollar amount. City Manager Crandall mentioned that Hilliard did receive some federal dollars through MORPC to complete the bike/pedestrian bridge over I-270 which will link Hilliard to Mill Run.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
- Mohammed "Mo" Museitif (5316 Wabash River Street, Dublin): Wanted to address "the elephant in the room" of the "illegal occupation happening in our homeland" of Palestine by Israel. He noted that Israel's blockade of the Gaza strip prevents supplies and food from reaching the people in that region, and spoke about the demolition of homes in Gaza due to lack of proper permits. He mentioned the loss of life and general poor treatment of family members in the region.
- Mazen Rasoul (5517 Brixston Court, Hilliard): Mazen came to speak on behalf of someone else who could not make it. He spoke during the prior City Council meeting on March 11th. He noted that Columbus City Council and Cleveland City Council passed ceasefire resolutions without using the term 'ceasefire', a fact that he criticized. He said that the moral thing to do would be to "become pro-Palestinian" and be against the "occupation" and "apartied regime". He said that "an ethnic cleansing campaign is ongoing". He asked council to adopt a ceasefire resolution.
- Reyann Askar (no address given): Said that she is an Ohio State student and lifelong Hilliard resident. She mentioned that she was surprised that "it was so controversial for the people in my own community to at the very least acknowledge the murder of newborn babies, children, and innocent civilians in my country." She acused council of "denying me my humanity as well as that of my Palestinian brothers and sisters." She said "we feel unsafe because our representatives are actively harming us by finding excuses to deny our requests", and that "you have the priviledge of [being uncomfortable with the word 'ceasefire']". She thought that council feared being labeled as anti-semetic and said "somewhere along the way the definition of antisemiticism, Judaism, and Zionism have been misconstrued." She accused council of being afraid to call for a ceasefire because it would fuel anti-semetism, but "what fuels anti-semetism is murdering children by the thousands in the name of Judaism while adamently insisting that your actions are inseparable from all Jewish people." "Zionism is a transformation to nationalism, its a colonial settler ideology and a political movement started by people who are non-religious." "Zionists use the word antisemetic as a weapon to shut down any and all criticism of Israel's policies." She accused the Israeli government of stealing land, starving people, and killing tens of thousands of others.
- Bayan Shalash (no address given): Said that she is a Hilliard Bradley graduate and an Ohio State medical school student. She mentioned council members by name as she spoke about happenings in Gaza. Said that she was moved by stories of medical professionals (Councilwoman Hale and Cole), as well as the impact to children through the disrupted education system (Councilman Teater). She said that children are being starved (calling out President Vermillion and Vice President Cottone for their dedication to feeding vulnerable citizens in Hilliard), and that it was clear that Israel was guilty of war crimes (calling out Councilman Carrier's expertise in legal affairs and Councilman Bett's military background).
- Kay Coghlan(??) (Galena): "I identify as a white woman and I am a Christian". Said that she was "here in solidarity with people of good conscience from around the world...to demand a permanent ceasefire in Gaza." She demanded liberation for the Palestinian people "who have been living with the Israeli government boot on their necks for 76 years." She went through a list of grievances against what was going on in Gaza, noting how Jesus would react to these actions.
- Nas(?) Rasul (no address given): Said that he graduated from Hilliard Davidson and Ohio State. Said that as a disabled person in America, he gets treated as inferior, but it would be nothing compared to the disabilities faced by people in Gaza. Asked council to support a ceasefire resolution. Said that they would be here every meeting until they do.
- Jessica Pohlman (Hilliard): As a nurse at Nationwide Children's, the impact of violence in Gaza affecting children has impacted her greatly. Asked council to support a ceasefire resolution, and show support for the Palestinian people.
- Sarah Abu-Rayyan (Hilliard): Spoke about her full name (which she doesn't have memorized), and the tradition of honoring each ancestor by mentioning them in a full name. She can trace her family to Palestine up to 14 generations. Spoke about some of the history of the region including the 1917 Balfour declaration and the creation of the Jewish state of Israel. Lamented that supporting the ceasefire in Gaza is considered antisemitic. Accused Israel of asking us to see Palestinian people as non-human and not deserving of basic rights.
- Erin Neese (3336 Brendan Drive, Columbus): Spoke about the international concerns for famine and starvation in Gaza. Mentioned issues that were noted by the Mennonite Central Committee with getting supplies into Gaza, and said that the Israel authorities are arbitrarily preventing trucks of supplies from entering Gaza. Asked council to pass a ceasefire resolution.
- Ameera Rasul (?) (Hilliard): 2023 graduate of Hilliard Davidson who mentioned the collective genocide murder of children in Gaza and noted that the UN Security Council just passed a two-week ceasefire resolution. Expressed confusion that the term ceasefire was considered controversial.
- Eric Schottenstein (Columbus): Worked in housing development in and around Hilliard. Condemned the loss of innocent life in the middle east and advocated for peace in the region. Quoted Golda Meir (Israeli Prime Minister and advocate for the creation of Israel) by saying that if Israel puts down their weapons, there will be no more Israel; but if the Palestinians put down their weapons, there will be peace. He expressed shock that the calls for a ceasefire don't mention anything about hostages or the actions of Hamas on October 7, 2023. While sympathizing with the "real concerns" expressed by residents today, he said that he doesn't recall ever seeing local governments called upon to denouce an international conflict.
- Stephanie Bisca (4921 Hawkstone Road, Hilliard): Asked council to consider a situation in which the invasion of a music festival by Hamas on October 7, 2023 had happened in Hilliard instead, and ask how they might feel about that. Further drew the analogy with hostages being taken. Said that it is up to the people of Palestine to remove Hamas from their elected positions. Denounced the 1988 Hamas charter, defining their struggle to be against the Jews, and called this genocidal. Someone from the audience spoke out while she was talking, which she called very disrespectful, and she was gently escorted out
- Wayne Genter (4272 Stream Bank Lane): Noted that since Council carries a responsibility to serve Hilliard, public comments during City Council meetings are only of value if the comments directly impact this community. He said that no resolutions, statements, or actions with impact outside the jurisdiction of Hilliard should be considered. He said that the current conflict in the middle east began with the Hamas invasion of Israel on October 7th and noted the atrocities committed by Hamas on that day and those that have continued since the attack. He noted the theft of funding by Hamas meant for humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.
Mr. Genter's three-minute time limit was reached and Vermillion attempted to move on with the business portion of the meeting. Hale said that others were given additional time to finish their thoughts, and that he should be given the same. There was a small outcry of disagreement from the audience. Vermillion said that she tried to stop everyone close to 30 seconds after the timer went off, and she heard Mr. Genter pause at the buzzer. Hale suggested that Mr. Genter was being polite by pausing unlike the other speakers, and was now not being allowed to finish because of it. Hale moved to give Mr. Genter another 15 seconds to speak, seconded by Carrier. On the Hale motion: Three in favor (Hale, Carrier, Betts), four against (Cole, Vermillion, Cottone, Teater). Motion failed. As people exited the chamber before the business portion started, there was a slight back-and-forth between Hale and Vermilliion with a suggestion to talk about it later.
ORDINANCES
Ordinance 24-06: AMENDING THE ZONING CODE OF THE CITY OF HILLIARD TO ADD HEALTH AND FITNESS FACILITIES AS A CONDITIONAL USE WITHIN THE OH-RD AND OHMD ZONING DISTRICTS - Summary: This proposal would allow “Health and Fitness Facilities” as conditional uses within the Old Hilliard zoning districts.
- Background: In January, an applicant submitted an application to request an amendment to the permitted and conditional use table for properties within Old Hilliard. The applicant is considering the use of an existing industrial site that would accommodate a use that is currently not anticipated by the Code. The positive recommendation of the Planning and Zoning Commission is being forwarded to City Council for final consideration.
- Votes: Seven in favor (Vermillion, Teater, Hale, Cottone, Cole, Carrier, Betters), none against.
- Status: Passed 7-0
RESOLUTIONS
Resolution 24-R-23: APPROVING EQUITY LLC'S APPLICATION FOR A COMMUNITY ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT GENERALLY LOCATED ALONG TRUEMAN BOULEVARD, SOUTH OF DAVIDSON ROAD, AND CREATING SUCH COMMUNITY ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT - Summary: This legislation will allow for additional liquor permits to help attract restaurants to the TruePointe development.
- Background: A Community Entertainment District ("CED'') is defined as an economic development tool that is important for revitalizing or activating neighborhoods and development areas, creating jobs, and allowing new businesses to open and operate within a bounded area that includes or will include a combination of entertainment, retail, educational, sporting, social, cultural, or arts establishments within close proximity to some or all of the following types of establishments within the district. When a CED is established, it creates a new "pool" of available liquor permits that can only be issued to businesses located within the CED. These additional liquor permits fall above the normal mandated quota, to be issued in the defined CED area -the CED may have one such permit for every five acres of the CED, up to a maximum of 15 permits.
- Votes: Motion to adopt by Teater, seconded by Hale. Seven in favor (Teater, Hale, Betts, Vermillion, Cole, Carrier, Cottone), none against.
- Status: Passed 7-0
Resolution 24-R-24: AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO ENTER INTO A CONTRACT WITH DECKER CONSTRUCTION COMPANY FOR THE 2024 SIDEWALK MAINTENANCE PROGRAM (CIP T-160); AUTHORIZING THE EXPENDITURE OF FUNDS; AND AUTHORIZING THE TRANSFER OF FUNDS - Summary: This legislation authorizes the City Manager to enter into a construction contract with Decker Construction Company and modifies an existing professional services contract with Prime AE Group for the annual Sidewalk Maintenance Program. The estimate for the 2024 Sidewalk Maintenance Program was $945,450 but the lowest bid from Decker Construction was $1,003,800.
- Background: Subdivisions subject to sidewalk maintenance this year include Avery, Colonial Lakes, Luxair, and Conklin.
- Votes: Motion to adopt by Cole, seconded by Cottone. Seven in favor (Cole, Cottone, Hale, Vermillion, Betts, Teater, Carrier), none against.
- Status: Passed 7-0
Resolution 24-R-25: AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO ENTER INTO A CONTRACT WITH MCCROMETER INC. FOR SANITARY SEWER FLOW MONITORING SERVICES (CIP S-20) AND AUTHORIZING THE EXPENDITURE OF FUNDS - Summary: This legislation would approve a professional services contract with McCrometer, Inc. to supply and maintain equipment to conduct sanitary sewer flow monitoring at various locations in the City's sanitary sewer system. The cost of five flow monitors and the rain gauge for twelve (12) months is $56,100, and the cost to relocate each of the five meters once is $7,000. This results in a cost for 2024 of $63,100, and $56,100 in 2025.
- Background: The City has previously contracted with Hach (now “McCrometer”) for successive two-year contracts over the past fourteen years. These contracts have always been less than $50,000 annually, and therefore, did not require additional Council authorization. Hach's costs for monitoring services have risen only slightly for each successive contract. Flow monitors produce 24-hour, 7-day-a-week measurements of flow in the City's sanitary sewer system. The advantage of McCrometer's flow monitoring system is it produces data that can be viewed on-line by the City or any engineering consultant working for the City. In addition, McCrometer monitors and maintains the meters as part of their contract.
- Votes: Motion to adopt by Carrier, seconded by Teater. Seven in favor (Carrier, Teater, Vermillion, Cole, Hale, Cottone, Betts), none against.
- Status: Passed 7-0
Resolution 24-R-26: CONFIRMING THE INTENTION OF THE CITY OF HILLIARD TO JOIN THE CITY OF COLUMBUS AS A CO-PLAINTIFF IN LEGAL ACTION CHALLENGING SECTION 9.681 OF THE OHIO REVISED CODE PROHIBITING LOCAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS AND ALTERNATIVE NICOTINE PRODUCTS - Summary: This Resolution declares Council’s intention that the City join as a co-plaintiff in legal action to be filed by the City of Columbus challenging Section 9.681 of the Ohio Revised Code, which would prohibit local administrative regulation of tobacco and alternative nicotine products, as a violation of the Ohio Constitution’s Home Rule Amendment.
- Background: In January, the Ohio General Assembly overrode the Governor’s veto of Section 9.681 of the Ohio Revised Code, which was adopted as a rider in the State’s biennial operating budget. Section 9.681 would prohibit local governments, including municipal corporations such as the City of Hilliard, from adopting and enforcing administrative regulations of tobacco products and alternative nicotine products. This law, if it takes effect, would prohibit the City’s existing tobacco retail licensing and enforcement.
- Votes: Motion to adopt by Betts, seconded by Cole. Carrier moved to amend the resolution to include a statement stipluating that any related expendatures for the legal challenge be brought back before the body for approval, seconded by Cole. On the Carrier motion: seven in favor (Carrier, Cole, Teater, Cottone, Vermillion, Hale, Betts), none against. Motion to amend passed 7-0. On the resolution as amended: Seven in favor (Betts, Cole, Cottone, Vermillion, Carrier, Hale, Teater), none against.

Not all Americans, manual transmissions are becoming uncommon here) at the airport. The trip is during winter so weather could be an issue. This is my tentative itinerary:
Saturday - arrival, drive to time share, shop for incidentals, rest Sunday - drive around Lake District get familiar driving on the opposite side of the road, seeing some sights but no strict agenda Monday - Drive to Scotland, attempt to visit Glasgow and Edinburgh...Maybe just Glasgow. Maybe take a train instead? What do you think? Tuesday/Wednesday - Husband and I are driving to Polperro Cornwall for hotel stay overnight. Train to Bodmin Parkway/Taxi to Polperro instead? Kids make their own plans. Thursday - Take a train to and from London. Got tickets for GoldenTours 1 Day hop on hop off bus tour. See what we can, try to make it to the most iconic stops. What are the basic things about traveling in England that I should before I get there. Thanks!
E
dit for update after reading through posts: Who would have thought my most popular, and controversial, post would be a travel post! Thank you for everyone who took the time to share their thoughts. So many cautions about driving conditions, I'm definitely considering that as a bigger impediment. Weather will play the biggest role in some of these decisions, Polperro hotel and bus tour in London are refundable up to a week before the visit so I'll watch the weather. Definitely reserving Sunday, Monday, and Friday as open to whatever, making a list of possible destinations. Jet lag, weather, etc will determine. When we get to our destination, we'll ask some locals for their advice. I tried responding to as many comments as I can but I keep getting relentlessly downvoted no matter what I say. Time will tell, the plan will work or it won't. We're going to stay flexible and try to maintain a sense of humor and sense of wonder. I'm looking forward to the adventure, hoping for the best but accepting of the reality it won't go to plan and we'll have to adjust. Update to Penrith/Polperro trip March 17, 2024 (5 months later) I have to admit, I really wasn't looking forward to this. Sat down to do it a few times but I have to admit, I didn't enjoy my last submission to this sub so I decided to forgo it hoping everyone had just gotten on with their lives. I did put a basic update on my profile hoping that would satisfy any die hards but having received a couple replies recently, it's obvious there are those who won't let it go. Here's a link to the original post:
https://www.reddit.com/uktravel/comments/16wf0jh/penrith_cumbria_family_of_4_7_days_at_a_timeshare/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 Caution: this will be a long post. Trip was amazing! Unbelievably, and perhaps despite ourselves, everything went damn near perfect in England. The flights there were kind of a shit show due to some guy boarding himself in Minneapolis before the gate was open, causing us to nearly miss our connecting flight in Paris to England. Fortunately the plane broke down in Paris so we didn't "/s". Flying into the Newcastle airport was exciting experience due to very high winds, truly a wild ride which we were told by locals is common.
So here was our trip, it was early February.
Day 1: Drive to
Penrith from Newcastle airport. Our rental was a Mercedes, which in the US is high end car which was neat. The first drive was terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. Sat nav put us on A686 which was a narrow, winding road in mountain passes, not easy for first time UK drivers. Thank god we opted for the automatic, even my husband expressed over and over how grateful he was we changed our minds about that. It was windy and cold, but no precipitation thankfully. Once we got over our anxiety about it, we all enjoyed the ride marveling at everything.
Our lodgings: 3 bedroom, 2 bath, full kitchen country cottage in Northern England. There was a bar and restaurant in the main house, which we frequented a couple times. I had the the fish & chips, which were delicious and my 18 y/o daughter loved ordering drinks at the bar since legal drinking age for us is 21. There was a pool and hot tub, the hot tub had a panoramic view of the English countryside with sheep grazing. Loved it and not one of us experienced any jet lag on our trip there. The long trip over the pond lined up perfectly with our sleep schedule, slept the whole flight.
Day 2:
Lake District. We decided to let the road take us and it did. We made a few stops but navigating parking was very difficult. Traffic moved at a pretty good clip and by the time you saw the sign for a car park, it was behind you. Trying to double back on narrow roads or pull over seemed treacherous. We made some stops to look at scenic views, waterfalls, and took a long tour of Wray Castle. Lake District is indeed a special place, though February I suspect is not the ideal time of year for all its glory. However, it was nice for keeping down crowds. Other than London, we often had places all to ourselves.
Day 3:
Hadrians Wall, Northern England, Dumfries Scotland. We made quite a few stops along Hadrians Wall, absolutely gorgeous countryside. Our longest stop was at
Birdoswald Roman Fort, got some amazing pictures. We laughed about visiting Hadrians wall since England is teeming with stone walls, but I don't regret doing it. The quaint countryside was more my interest anyway.
Caerlavrock Castle in Dumfries was my kids favorite stop for sure. We had the whole castle to ourselves, and the gentleman at the gift shop came out and gave us a private tour for a bit (benefits of visiting off season). The neat part is being so close to history. In the US, you're generally corralled though everything, kept at a distance from anything important. Here we were right there, up close, able to touch it.
Day 4 & 5:
Polperro. Yes, of course we did it! Drive down was uneventful, drove through the early morning hours, got there around 8 am. Spent the morning exploring the harbor, beach (it was low tide so we got to go into the cave), the footpaths on the netloft side. Not much was open but we went to every store that was. Had lunch at a cute little diner, husband got a Cornish pasty, I got a traditional English breakfast. By this time, exhaustion was catching up with us so we went back to the hotel to take a nap. Later we walked back down to the harbor to have drinks at the Blue Peter Inn and Three Pilchards. The next morning before sunrise, we did Reuben's Walk to the lighthouse and spent some time watching the beacon as the sun rose. Oh, and why Polperro: My husband and I bonded over an old point-and-click video game called
The Lost Crown A Ghost Hunting Adventure set in Saxton (AKA Polperro). Won't go into all the details but Saxton is kind a supernatural world between life, and after life, or that's how we interpreted it in the game. Last February, my husband was diagnosed with leukemia. Won't go into everything but a trip to Saxton just seemed like the right thing to do after you get news like that. Drive back was uneventful other than it may have been the one and only time the sun came out during our 7 days there. Not complaining though, cloudy and drizzly was exactly what I envisioned.
Day 6:
London. Took the train, which was fun tbh. I wish I had a nickel for every time the lady said "See it, Say it, Sorted" over the intercom. We got off at Euston and took the tube to Waterloo to pick up the bus tour. There was no reason to take the tube to Waterloo as I found out but it was fun anyway, we don't have a subway where I live. I have to admit that London was my least favorite part of the vacation. It was wildly crowded for a cold, rainy random Thursday. And it turns out I get car sick on double decker buses. Still it was worth it to see those iconic sites with our own eyes. Got back to Penrith at nightfall and it felt like home. By this time the train station, Morrisons, the main circle by Morrison's was starting to feel so familiar. It snowed that day, white covered the sides of the road.
Day 7, last full day in England. Explored Penrith more, went to the post office to mail some post cards, shopped at stores outside the city center. The hills looked beautiful snow capped. Never got to the Scottish highlands but I'd like to think they look a bit like that if I did.
Trip home was ok. Spent a few hours in Amsterdam airport, felt like we saw the whole world of people there.
We absolutely loved our England trip. The countryside, castles, people, driving on the opposite side of the road, yes even the gas stations on the freeway...were amazing. Fun fact, either England doesn't have pay at the pump or none of the stations we visited did. Sat nav/Google maps correctly predicted all drive times whether M, A, or B roads. I really don't know why so many people predicted outrageous drive times, not true at all for us. I imagine driving near or in London would have been terrible, so we didn't. The circles were wild, scary at first, fun by the end. We watched lots of Youtube videos about English driving, definitely paid off. Yes it was expensive but it was a trip of a lifetime for us and worth every dime.
RELEVANT COMMENTS MACHinal152 @LBusername what a belta frisk reading this, this is why I love Americans, it’s the can do attitude, this country’s full of moaning miserable people, you can’t post online saying I’ve climbed a mountain with out someone pointing out that there are people who can’t climb mountains so it’s offensive. Love the pioneer spirit, more people should be like you guys. Only thing I’d complain about is you flew into my hometown and yet no mention of it, you missed some of the most beautiful streets in Europe like pilgrim street/Grainger street/dean street
OOP Newcastle will always hold the special distinction of being our first, and last, image of England. That said, you're right, it was only the place to start and end our visit and that's probably a shame. Flying in, as we got closer to the ground, we saw a lighthouse and remember thinking how much I'd like to visit it. I took a picture of it, it's not very good for sharing, but it encompasses the excitement and awe I felt finally making it there. https://imgur.com/a/2oDmkD5
~ hakshamalah I can't believe you stayed in the lakes and went to London and Cornwall but not Scotland! Ya daft wotsits!
OOP Dumfries is Scotland! We didn't go far into Scotland but we definitely made it. Had arguably one of our best days at Caerlaverock Castle.

2024.03.18 18:43 jiaco516 What is a Jumbo Mortgage?
A Deep Dive into Jumbo Mortgages: Are You Ready to Super-Size Your Home Dreams?
Welcome, mortgage mavens and prospective palace purchasers alike, to a no-nonsense, all-about-jumbo-mortgages prowl! Grab your favorite caffeinated drink, because we're plunging into the deep, sometimes intimidating, and oh-so-fascinating world of jumbo home loans.
What the Heck Is a Jumbo Mortgage Anyway? (
https://themortgage.app/mortgage-tips/b/jumbo-loans)
You've heard the term bandied about in certain circles – usually the kind where a triple-shot espresso and designer suits are standard issue. But what makes a mortgage "jumbo" and why should you care? Well, strap in, because we're about to reveal a secret that could change the landscape of your home investment strategies.
A Jumbo Mortgage Defined
A jumbo mortgage is like the emperor of loans – it's the big guy, the heavy hitter, the leader in square footage and cost. It's a loan that exceeds the limits set by government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. If you're looking to purchase a home that exceeds these dollar thresholds, you're officially in jumbo territory.
Who Needs a Jumbo Mortgage?
This isn't just your average Joe's loan. It's for those looking to buy a home that's a slice of heaven, and for whom a regular mortgage just won't cut it. We're talking about high-net-worth individuals, move-up buyers with swanky tastes, and yes, even first-time buyers who dream big.
Navigating the Unknown Waters of Jumbo Domains
Now that you're armed with the knowledge that jumbo mortgages are not, in fact, loans for buying overly large elephants, it's time to get into the nitty-gritty.
Loan Amount Thresholds
What makes a mortgage jumbo?
It's not just the catchphrase; it's the dollar amount. Jumbo loans kick in where conventional mortgages fear to tread, generally starting at $766,550 (but this varies by location), reaching up to several million smackers.
Interest Rates and Terms
With great power comes great interest rates, or so the old adage sort of goes. Jumbo mortgages often have slightly higher rates, given the higher risk to lenders. This isn't always the case, but it's a good rule of thumb. The terms can be more flexible since they don’t fall under the same umbrella as conventional loans.
Note: Just because the house is "jumbo priced" doesn't mean you have to get a Jumbo Mortgage! If the conventional loan limit where you live is $766,550, and you were planning to put down 20%, you could be in a conventional loan still as long as the sales price isn't higher than $958,000. Planning on 25% down? That takes your max sales price to $1,022,000!!
Who Should – and Shouldn't – Take the Jumbo Plunge?
Jumbo mortgages aren't for the faint of heart or the thin of wallet. Yet, they offer opportunities that traditional mortgages cannot.
High-Net-Worth Individuals
For the elite looking to invest in prime real estate, jumbo mortgages could be the golden ticket to property portfolios that make jaws drop – and property values soar.
Move-Up Buyers
You've lived one dream house; now you want your next one. A jumbo mortgage can bridge the abyss between selling your last turreted castle and buying your next one.
First-Time Homebuyers
Wait, what? Yes, jumbo loans can be for first-timers, too. If you're in an area with high property values and this is your genuine home market, a jumbo mortgage might put that white picket fence in arm's reach.
The Art of Nailing the Jumbo Mortgage
The key to harnessing the power of jumbo lending is not just money; it's strategy, collaboration, and approach.
Realtors' Role
For real estate agents, understanding jumbo mortgages is like navigating the off-menu items. It sets them apart as the go-to guides for clients aiming for the stratosphere in home buying.
CPA and Financial Planner Involvement
Bringing in the pros early, think of it as laying the groundwork for a mansion. CPAs are like architects, designing finances to meet crazy (elongated) loan requirements.
Jabbing at the Pros and Cons of Going Jumbo
Here’s the juicy beef – the triple-decker jumbo loan sandwich with extra pickles. (Yes, we’re hungry and using food analogies now.)
Benefits of Jumbo Mortgages (
https://themortgage.app/jumbo-loans)
You get the house of your LinkedIn dreams — the kind that gets likes, shares, and possibly an influencer hashtag of its own. Plus, you’ve got more leverage in negotiations when you walk in with a jumbo check for your jumbo loan.
Challenges of Jumbo Mortgages
Like any menu at a Michelin-starred restaurant, the choices can be overwhelming, and the expectations hefty. Jumbo mortgages often come with strict requirements, higher down payments, and a dedicated MRI of your financial health.
Are You Ready to Sign the Jumbo Dotted Line?
Jumbo mortgages aren't the stuff of myths; they are real, often critical vehicles for securing the luxury home of your dreams. Whether you're a seasoned property gazelle, a high-flying entrepreneur with a taste for marble entryways, or a newbie just wanting that life sized Monopoly house, the jumbo mortgage can be your doorway into the next chapter of your residential epic.
Ultimately, the choice to pursue a jumbo mortgage isn't just a numerical decision; it's a lifestyle consideration. It’s about balancing ambitious home aspirations with fiscal responsibility.
Take the plunge into jumbo mortgages like you would a heated pool in your backyard – with preparation and gusto.
And remember, the only thing larger than the loan might just be the feeling of walking into the super-sized house that loan built.
Welcome home to your jumbo-sized life!

2024.03.17 13:31 LBsusername Update to Penrith/Polperro trip
I have to admit, I really wasn't looking forward to this.
