2024.06.08 22:49 Kelekona My bad day is hilarious.

I slept in this morning, so no adderall because the last thing I need tonight is insomnia. Just now taking the other med at 3:30 pm because it sucks to try on an empty stomach.
Normally I'm the type that can chuck a frozen pork-chop into a running frying-pan and leave the kitchen without it being a disaster.
Today I wanted "we have too much in the freezer" curry. Some red and yellow peppers from a few seasons ago, some diced onions from winter, half of a diced eggplant from last fall, the rice was cooked in old turkey-broth from two years ago, and I threw crinkle-cut carrots in. (I managed to get the veggies thawed and dried-out in the frying-pan just fine, somehow. I almost messed-up the rice-math, but I caught it.) Mom picked out the jar of sauce.
The part I had trouble with, other than asking mom to supervise me pulling ingredients out to make sure she'd like it, was that I got impatient and tried to double-boiler thaw things. I found my phone in yesterday's pant, pocket, narrated putting my wallet on my desk and my keys on the key-rack, and then remembered that I wanted to set a five-minute timer to turn the stove off. (Why I didn't use the stove timer or the mechanical one magnetized to the fridge is a mystery.)
My phone was at 38% and I didn't want to grab the cable from my bedroom. USB adapter was in the power-strip next to the couch, but the cable in the side-table was just a few inches. After the timer went off, I set a new one for two hours and told my mom it was because I stuck my phone under the couch. (It went off while I was typing, fully-charged so I put the cable and charger back in the side-table for next time the flashlights need charging.)
I decided that it was a no-streaming day. I couldn't find Inside Out, so I decided on Firefly and had to ask mom to get me disc one because my eyes aren't working well today. (More like I don't have the patience to cope with it.) Also I had to have her open the DVD-tray with the remote because the buttons weren't cooperating. After ignoring two discs of Firefly, I put in Disney's Dinosaur and almost pulled it back out to switch to Atlantis because of the ads that it was going to come out in theaters in 2001. Man DVD-tech is as wonky as dealing with a Win95 computer. Now to see if that newer-to-us copy of Night at the Smithsonian has a fatal-scratch that's worse than our old copy. (I put a postie in the bad one's case!)
My task for today was to put some of my boxes into my oubliette to make room for me to put boxes from mom's sewing-room into my art space. The shelves were wrong in my oubliette, but I wisely decided to just work around it instead of messing with it. Mom's success is to not worry about knowing where her boxes are because I will give them back when she can put them back into her sewing-room.
(Don't shame me about being an adult and living with my mom. I buy groceries, I cook, and I move stuff like the air-conditioners.)

Hi, all! I checked the group rules and there was nothing about rehoming, so here goes (I'm sorry if there was something I missed - if so, just let me know and I'll delete this! 😬)
TLDR I'm trying to help a lady find a home for her Catahoula / Shepherd cross in Central California. Pooch's name is Winter. She is 18 months and will be spayed and vaxxed to the max prior to rehoming. Full story below if anyone cares to read it.
Note: Winter is not my dog, and I'm just trying to help find the best possible outcome for her.
6 month's ago *Abby (my friend) sent her 17yo son home to visit his dad is SoCal. While there, her son was taken for a ride by a backyard breeder and returned home -$300, and with Winter in tow. Abby was not consulted in this. They tried to send the dog back, but the owners wouldn't take it. Dumb mistake, but we've all done dumb stuff as teenagers.
Abby's son is soon off to college. Mom already works two jobs and has no time. They live in an apartment. I have managed to find a temp foster for Winter, who is willing to keep her indefinitely / help me find a permanent home... which, tbh is fantastic and has really restored some of my faith in humanity in general.
Winter is a kind, loving dog with a submissive temperament. She'll be big; I imagine around 60-80lbs once she's fleshed out. She has little training at the moment (no surprise), but she is extremely smart and willing. She will have the basic buttons insalled before rehoming. Her biggest issue is that she gets scared and defensive, but as with anything, time and consistency is the cure. She is not aggressive by nature.
I've been busy putting up flyers, facebook posts, and ads on rescue sites. On one of my Google research runs, I happened upon this group (yay for reddit!) So here I am dropping another fishing line in the water for Winter and hoping someone might be looking, or know someone who is looking, for a Catahoula / Shepherd mix in the state of California. Again, if this isn't allowed, I apologize profusely and will take this post down immediately.
Also note that I am a working dog owner myself (two Kelpies) and am way more picky with humans than dogs - all potential adopters will be thoroughly and uncomfortably vetted 😂

Roth Arkoth, The Domain of Prophecy, had materialized out of the Void one hundred and forty years before Ustuth Uderib would ever truly be known for anything in her life. She was an early settler in the hamlet of Rashumid Kulet Unol, Deathfallen the Abby of Souls and her luck had not always been the best. In the spring of 133 she was caught out during a goblin raid and had sustained severe injuries before the militia was able to swoop in to save her. Despite still being alive and not locked in the haunted vaults of Nekol the Phantom of Crypts, where all dwarfs of the Gears of Winter eventually spend their eternity, she was never the same after the attack. She had difficulty walking and grasping things, along with severe nerve damage. The medical team was able to patch her up and she continued her days in Deathfallen weaving cloths and training animals. She was left with deep mental scars that would eventually open the spiritual door for a greater evil to reside with her. It started with her appearance becoming gaunt and haggard, she was always winded, and started to get into a lot of arguments. Ustuths work also suffered, for one season she spent time in the dungeon after not completing a work order given by the mayor, later the duchess of Deathfallen. Every so often over the next seven years she would spiral into a state of oblivious rambling, wandering the halls muttering nonsense. Her fellow dwarfs thought this was just a depression brought on by the severe injury and had given her the nickname “Moopsy”. Things were not to stay this way.
In the late summer of 140 Ustuth Uderib was in the drink cellar under the tavern having a drink when other dwarfs around her said they noticed a sudden change in her mannerisms. As the music was playing above and merry making was being had in the tavern a roaring laughter split the sound. This was no mere break of sanity, this had a fell and terrible energy to it, almost otherworldly. The citizens down in the cellar with Ustuth at the time recall her face being twisted into an evil grin as she cackled and murmured in her fell induced state of mania. Soon she had left the tavern, most writing it off to another one of her odd moods. She made her way to the production district of the city, packed with all different types of workshops and proceeded to go to a clothier shop where she was seen choking Zulban Morultaran to death. The citizens in the production district all ran out in search of the city guards, but by the time they made it back to the site of the crime neither Ustuth or the body could be found.
A couple of days passed and reports of muttering and maniacal laughter were reported in the newer section of the district where some new tanner shops had been set up to help facilitate the production of tanned hides. There Ustuth was found, murmuring in a low tone, piles of flesh and meat surrounded her and in her hands was a warhammer. As the guards moved closer she did not acknowledge them, just kept muttering the name “Assogdasnast, Assogdasnast”. As the guards reached out for the weapon she did not react, and to their horror it was made of the bones of Zulban. Despite the perfect craftdwarfship and decoration on the warhammer this could not be excused so easily. Ustuth was shortly found guilty of the murder of Zulban Morultaran and sentenced to 250 days in the lower dungeon. She was also given the new nickname of “The Fiend” by others in the fort.

2024.06.07 18:07 Sisakivrin Across State Lines by Lauren Biel: like riding a rollercoaster that's surrounded by dinosaur-infested jungle.

What I mean to say is, you're safe. It's just a book. But you get to feel some extreme emotions, and that's hella fun!
{Across State Lines by Lauren Biel} knocked it out of the park for me but it is a DARK romance. Emphasis on DARK: Serial killing trucker x hitchhiking sex worker. Both have SA in their pasts. He has dissociative identity disorder (split personalities). There are no children in it. The title doesn't refer to transporting a child.
It is a veritable catalogue of kink. In terms of kink-per-page, mapping this book would look like central Dubai. And none of those kinks make my personal list of favorites. I'm not even a horror fan: Final Girl stories are new to me. I don't really like the MMC(s). Or the FMC for that matter. So why the heck am I raving about this book?
Two reasons.
ONE: Because I admire Aurora Rivelle. She's a FMC for the ages. She survives where I would not. Aurora is both broken and unbreakable, and it's magnificent to watch.
While feeling superior to TSTL heroines has its occasional charm, for me one of the most delightful feelings in romance is encountering a FMC who stuns me, rocks me back on my heels, makes me think 'Holy shit, bravo! You rocked that! I bow down before you!'
I love Bridget Jones. But sometimes I hate the decades of fumbling, bumbling heroines she heralded. On occasion, I want a badass version of Barbara Stanwyk in The Lady Eve (1941, film buffs please don't hate me for making that comparison--she's just the anti-Bridget). I want competence, poise, and a total lack of apology. Aurora Rivelle supplies all three, in unexpected flavors.
It's an all-too-rare feeling, elicited by the likes of Maura Quinn (well, up until the whole surprise pregnancy thing) in {Embrace the Darkness by Ashley N. Rostek}, Daniel Schwartz (yes, a woman named Daniel) of {Taunt by Eve Dangerfield}, and of course Lana Mothermindfucking Myers of the {Mindf*ck series by ST Abby}.
TWO: Because it's an emotional adventure! Admittedly, I have a tendency to giggle-cackle through bananapants plots. For example, {Stranded by Selena Winters} involves stalking, CNC, masks, and primal play. My reaction was continuous hilarity and "I can't believe you went there… does that mean you're going to... oh WOW tee hee hee!" Plus it was hot.
Traveling to crazy-town (I don't mean the kink. I mean the wisdom in engaging in it in those circumstances) within the sheltered confines of an HEA guarantee is like wearing a seatbelt. You can safely navigate otherwise too-dangerous territory.
Across State Lines goes deep into the dark. The plot is detached from reality but the emotional journey that plot entails is real. (Please run, not walk, to watch the ContraPoints video on Twilight, which analyses the psychology of romance fiction and is hilarious.)
Kane and Amelia's story is like sitting down to a 13-course dinner where every dish is going to burn the hell out of your mouth but be oh-so worth it. This isn't just a meal, it's a feast. Possibly with an orgy to follow. It's an experience.
I read a great deal of mostly-dark smut, and this was like inhaling quality moonshine. Though {Then, Earth Swallowed Ocean by Shiloh Sloane} is still the (gorgeously written) titan against which all others must be measured.
This book is more fun, though. The word "whee!" applies. In fact, the author's sense of humor functions as another kind of seatbelt.
It relaxed me, the steady wit a reassurance that this is a smart, mature, sane person at the writing wheel, and that they're going to make the ride comes to a nice, gentle HEA stop. Basically, the humor and excellent prose gave me faith the author was going to pull it off.
(Still laughing about Kane's multiple personalities causing him to be known in prison as the violent masturbator who cries a lot: "Not a good look" as he put it.)
Two notes:
  1. The portrayal of DID is probably imperfect. My not-degree from Shallan Davar University says it's respectable.
  2. The plot includes sex trafficking, which I normally hate as a plot device, but I'm cutting this author some slack because of the small scale of the trafficking portrayed. What sends my blood pressure through the roof is large-scale, Shades-of-Illuminati, 21st Century White Slave Fantasy QAnon Brand™ trafficking, which can be harmful misinformation.

I'm searching for some articles from the Baker Street Journal and was wondering if anyone of you knows, if they are sold separately anywhere? Or if it's possible to buy some journals from the last years? I know that until 2011 you can buy them as PDF on a DVD (btw, has anyone done this? does ist work? getting a DVD for a PDF-file seems weird to me). But after 2011, I don't find any journal anywhere. Not even in a library (at least in Germany).
To be more specific: i want to know what "Watson’s Black Dog" by Michele Jankowski from the Winter 2023 edition (Vol. 73, No.4) is about, because i'm researching about "The Hounds of the Baskervilles". It's not that important to get that specific essay, but i'd still like to read it or just to be able to get a look in some of the articles, because they are often cited in the literature i'm reading about the topic.

NOTE: If you see a SteelBook in my posted pics that is NOT LISTED as for sale in this thread, it has already been sold. I am re-using the pics from my earlier For Sale Threads. All SteelBooks (unless otherwise noted) have been opened and digital copies have been redeemed. While a majority of these SteelBooks are sold out/out of print, my prices reflect that they are opened. I’d say 95% of my collection are “mint”/in good shape. Some have minor dents. As mentioned above, I’m liquidating my collection, which means they are priced low for a quick sale. As such, prices are FIRM. I know most (if not all) of these SteelBooks in my collection are sold-out/OOP and I could ask for more but I’m not trying to price gouge anymore.
RANT: I would prefer to sell to collectors who actually want these SteelBooks in their collection and my have missed out on them the first time, and I believe that most of my past purchasers fall in this category. However, I have seen some buyers take advantage of my low prices and engage in arbitrage (I won’t call out who these buyers are) and are trying to flip them for twice what I sold them for. I know that once I sell an item it is no longer mine and the new owner can do whatever they want with it, but I don’t have to like it. RANT OVER.

2024.06.04 03:06 No_Fox_3788 'Body Heat' but inverted,'The DLS'

This is a true story. In the winter of 2011 I ended up living in a trailer on Olive Street w/ a husband and wife and their 2 children. I had just got kicked out. I was crying the day it happened.They had been my neighbors in Tropical Farms for years.They took me in no questions asked.We were like family.I was 28 years old. The trouble started in June. Scott, the husband, hit a Mexican in this neighborhood called Golden Gate.As in,hit with his truck, a Chevy Blazer. He had no license. He ran. Doing 80 MPH down Evergreen Ave. The cops finally boxed him in on Cove.When he got to court, they offered him a sweetheart deal:1 year in the county jail for felony fleeing and eluding.If you know Florida's legal system,this is essentially a slap on the wrist.He accepted it, with a caveat.He petitioned the court to put him on probation til October, and then he would do the year. The arrangement worked for all of 2 weeks. Before he violated he got in a fight at the beach with his wife, Carrie. Someone I had known for years,but even so,had not communicated with much. She was my best friend's wife. When the fight was over,something strange happened. For one thing, my girlfriend Alisha- a stripper- broke up with me , and took Scott home. The breaking up was not unusual-we did that all the time- but I'm guessing they left together to talk s*** about us,their respective significant others. I'll never forget that- Carrie just standing there in the beach parking lot wearing a blue bikini, in a cloud of dust, staring at me. Like, we've both just been left here. Just the two of us. It had never really happened that we should be left alone. I had a lot to drink that day. We walked back up to the beach. She was talking but I wasn't really listening. I was more concerned about getting home. But I started noticing she was talking about me. Words like 'attractive', 'couldn't say anything' , 'always'. I had never been that shocked in my life. She really did do an incredible job of hiding it. We had already been living together for 6 months and we had not flirted once. I just never picked up on it. We made out, and vowed to each other we would never say a word to anyone. We both knew what could happen. Scott loved Carrie, more than anything. Certainly more than she loved him. It hurts when it's like that. So. Her husband violates the probation. Which means more jail time. Alot more. He gets 3 years in prison. Needless to say, with everything happening, I was relieved. I and Carrie had to do many things to keep the affair from getting out. We called it the dirty little secret- Scott, the kids, his mother-oh yeah, I forgot to mention she lived with us- if any of them found out, something horrible could happen. Which is what made it exciting. I think that's what drives alot of people to have affairs, the adrenaline , how insanely thrilling it is. Despite seeming superficial, we were actually very close. I did love her. I would wake up just feeling like I was the worst person , but I would see her, and I just can't explain it. We talked. We cried together. We loved the children. We took care of them. It was all like some surreal dream. For 2 months that's how it went . One day,while talking to my neighbor Tina in my driveway, a strange man walked by. Staring right at me. His name was Michael. I didn't like him the moment o saw him . I asked Tina if she knew him. She said, " Oh, that's my ex, Mike, he stalks me all the time." Indeed, he had been coming from the dead end of my street, he lived 2 blocks over. Which means he walked thru 2 blocks of private property to get to my street. Instantly I knew this guy was trouble. Me and Carrie continued our affair anyway. Things came to a head on July 30,2011.
In those days,South FL was awash in opiates. Pain clinics. Everyone I knew was using them. So Carrie asked me to get her some. I knew it was Mike's money, but I did it, with honest intentions. It so happens my guy was running late;I met him at the Shell station nearby. As soon as I got them, the phone rang(remember Cingular flip-phones?) He was talking s, saying you piece of s, you're robbing me. I said,well, I wasn't,but I am now. I said if he had any problem meet me at the end of my street. He didn't show. Maybe 4 hours later Carrie showed up -at first she was mad- yelling- and then,somehow, we started getting intimate. We always had the music up loud (2011 was full of food songs) so I guess I never heard them . I look over Carrie's shoulder, and there are 3 people standing in my living room, one had a flashlight aimed at me. It was like they just teleported. I sized up my options. Carrie begged Mike to leave. Ì gave an ultimatum-get out , òr face the consequences. I grabbed a golf club-a putter- one of the kids played with it- off the entertainment center. I lifted it up and down-swinged like I was hitting a railroad spike. The shaft broke. I was holding it. I realized the rest of it was inside this guy's skull.The uncle. He dropped and I looked down and that was a sight I will never forget. So here comes Mike bull-rushing me. It was amateur night. I threw him into a DVD rack, a table, then thru the window. I didn't see him after that. The 3rd one, the girl, grabbed a butcher knife out of MY kitchen. I did take a couple of cuts but grabbed her wrist and grabbed one of her legs. I basically wheelbarrowed her to the floor and when she tried to get up I had enough time to get a running start. I speared her into the sliding glass door. Smash. There were 3 ppl then there were none. The house is destroyed. There's so much blood. All this happened in less than a minute. So I ran. That was a huge mistake. The 'victims' called 911 and told them some bs story. I got tackled by cops thrown into a car and didn't talk to anyone until interrogation. That detective right there was cool af. I swear to god he told me I should've shot them (this is right around the time 'stand your ground' was becoming a thing in FL). Tallahassee has 75 days to file 'formal' charges. They let me go on the 74th. The case simply disappeared. When the detectives got everybody separated they all had different stories. And nobody could seem to explain how they actually got in my house. Things were different after that for me and Carrie but we did hang out.Her husband was getting out soon.We went out one last time around Christmas,just me and her. We cried together. It was over.
I did in fact betray my best friend, who treated me like family. I was hostile, irresponsible, sad, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and alienated people around me. Now, I'm 41, that's all ancient history, I have a job , a daughter, and a whacky family. I can hardly believe the things I did. But they weigh on me. If there is such thing as karma it's winding up. Don't get me wrong, I had already been to prison BEFORE this happened. But it didn't work. I was just an absolute sociopath. I guess that's it. Carrie and Scott actually stayed together which was mind blowing to me. I wasn't the only one who was with her. They moved some time later to NC. It's such a crazy world. My theory is if you live to be 35, you probably have a crazy story inside you...or a dirty little secret.
