2024.05.15 12:32 Omninemesisx Looking for Friends

28 M EST
I play RPGs and FGs mainly. To give you an idea, the games I've played and beat recently are Dragon's Dogma 2, Lords of the Fallen, Tekken 8, Granblue Fantasy Relink, Baldur's Gate 3.
Other than that, I like to talk about the games industry. I do not nor will I participate in console wars as I own multiple consoles and am doing research on building my first PC.
Games I'm currently playing are Stellar Blade, Elden Ring, Tekken 8, Street Fighter 6, Final Fantasy XVI, Baldur's Gate 3, Dragon's Dogma 2 (NG+), and Granblue Fantasy Relink (the RPG, not the fighting game).
I'm humble, God-fearing, and I respect everyone's point of view even if I disagree with you. I just want to play games and talk and learn about people. Give me a shout if you're interested in chatting sometime.
No Fortnite, CoD, Apex, Overwatch, DBD, Helldivers, etc. I don't play those games.

2024.05.13 11:12 SaphironX Having a single save file in 2024 so if I’m forced to delete my character if I want to start a fresh playthrough is so freaking dumb.

Edit: To be clear I mean a separate save as in a way to keep my existing character and create a TOTALLY new character to play from scratch. Not a second save for my existing guy.
I’m on console so I don’t have a ton of options here. The game offers two races, and even plays a bit different if you choose a small lightweight character instead of a tall heavy one. Even your stamina refresh and movement speed are different.
I want to start a fresh game as opposed to NG+ because it has no difficulty scaling to speak of. I love my dude though. When dlc comes out I want to play it with him. Like I have three Elden ring characters. All unique, all awesome, and they’ll all jump into the dlc when it comes out.
I also want to start from scratch and try a different perspective in DD2.
What possible benefit does having no second save file provide? It’s 2024. This is an insane limitation that’s right out of the 1990s. It’s actually nuts.
Edit: Who would possibly downvote this?
How is this not a reasonable comment when, out of my very very large PS4 and PS5 library, no other title, not a single one I own, has this limitation? From the original final fantasy to morrowind to the Witcher to demon’s souls, no rpg in my entire life does not let me start a game without completely nuking my entire character. This isn’t even QOL. This is the most basic menu option ever made.
Is nobody else playing NG+ and thinking “I wish there was better difficulty scaling so it wasn’t too easy?” 🤷🏻‍♂️
Do we just never have another fight where the enemy can hold its own?

2024.05.12 21:40 pheare_me 3090 vs 4080 super for 1440p triple screen - thoughts?

Hey all,
I currently have a pc with 5600x and a 3090.
I am building out a dedicated triple screen sim rig to be used mainly for ATS, with some BeamNg, FH5 and AC.
Since I will need a pc for the sim rig and also one for my regular desk and gaming needs I have another pc on its way - 7700x with a 4080 super.
I was initially thinking of using the 3090 pc with my sim rig (triple 1440p) and the 4080s for my 'regular' games, played on a 1440p 34" ultrawide. But now I am wondering if using the 4080s on the sim rig would make more sense? I play mostly rpg type games - Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon, Far Cry, Baldur's Gate 3, Yakuza, etc.
I know that 3 16:9 1440p monitors will be harder to drive than a single 1440p ultrawide, but also feel that, generally speaking, ATS is not as demanding to run as some of the other games I play.
Any thoughts on which machine to use where?

2024.05.10 19:31 OneHamster1337 What are some other unique deck builders you’ve enjoyed besides Monster Train?

Imma be honest with you, Monster Train was the first deck building roguelite that actually had me playing it for hours on end. It was the first (that was STS) but it was the first whose core concepts really clicked. The clan system especially, because of how… RPG-y it felt in really special way I liked, and the different dynamic builds you could create. The replayability element felt more present just because of that one thing + the rando events, the different upgrade paths, and logically the NG+ covenant progression.
Now, I’ve pretty much exhausted the game, aside from the multiplayer which I didn’t even bother with (correct me if I’m wrong and it’s worth trying out, I might be being unfair to the game for no reason), and I’m on the lookout for some new ones to fill the niche.
So far, besides the occasional slow replay of Monster Train, I casually dive into Duelists of Eden for a few quick matches just to see if a new deck/character combo I thought of is any good. It’s also a great time killer while I commute to work since the fights are really quick and it’s easy to put down when you’re in a hurry (or are about to miss your stop in my case). It was also interesting because of the hybrid fighting/deck building mechanics. Another cool one, more visually/thematically than anything, is Castle Morihisa. I like the Japanese aesthetic and mob design but can’t comment further until I get deeper into it… The ratings aren’t that great but I had fun in the few hours I spent on it.
So, any other interesting indie deck builders that might’ve slipped past me, and that you think everyone should be aware of? Can be anything that has at latest some interesting design choices that make it stand out.

2024.05.09 23:47 Fullbust-this Mild criticism of the Chosen Undead vs Terrarian (and it’s mistakes with Dark Souls)

Mild criticism of the Chosen Undead vs Terrarian (and it’s mistakes with Dark Souls)
So recently I’ve started looking over the connections of the Chosen Undead vs Terrarian and noticed a fair bit of issues regarding the lore of Dark Souls and misunderstanding its characters to a pretty high degree, so I’m here to make corrections with this response.
Note, I’m only well informed of Dark Souls, so I shall not be analyzing any of Terraria’s lore, I will strictly be looking at Dark Souls here. Also, this is by no means meant to be an insult to the creator or anyone else who happens to like this matchup. I don’t like invoking drama or antagonizing others so I will be as respectful as I can.

Core Theme:

” Both are the silent, customisable, world travelling protagonists of popular, influential, critically acclaimed, open world, boss rush video games of 2011 (Dark Souls/Terraria) that essentially revolutionised their respective video game mediums (Dark Fantasy RPGs/Survival Sandboxes), only to be rivalled by another whom their protagonists are surprisingly similar (Minecraft/Skyrim) “
Dark Souls is not a boss rush game, though it has a lot of bosses the time in between each boss is notable, not every area has a boss and there’s only a single example of having to fight back to back bosses in all of DS1. You technically could skip to bosses but that was not necessarily the developer intent.
Next, Dark Souls and Skyrim never really had a rivalry compared to Minecraft and Terraria, yes both are very popular dark fantasy RPG’s but it only has a legacy under the context of Death Battle, not their individual franchises.
Dark Souls’ rivalry is usually compared to FromSoft’s other titles such as the predecessor Demon Souls, other Souls games and later Bloodborne and Elden Ring, in the communities there’s very little “ rivalry “ between Dark Souls and Skyrim as they aren’t similar games at their core with very different gameplay, world progression and world building, if anything Dark Souls 1 is a Metroidvania.

Core Connections:

“ In the ancient past, an ancient, powerful, reality warping god like being plagued the world, turning the majority of it’s inhabitants to mindless, degenerate, suffering, undead beings along with the environment as well (Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, refused to kindle the First Flame to make way for the Age of Dark which caused the Undead Curse to plague upon the world, eventually turning the majority of it’s inhabitants into Hollows/Moon Lord wreaking havoc to which he did in the past by zombifying the majority of it’s inhabitants as well as helping the diseased spreading biomes such as the Corruption and the Crimson after his “death”) but then comes our combatants who came to a certain land to vanquish this god like being to restore this suffering and dying world (Chosen Undead came to Lordran as he was destined to slay Gwyn as the new Lord of Cinder and kindle the First Flame to prolong the Age of Fire [or become the Dark Lord if he doesn’t kindle the First Flame to make way for the Age of Dark]/The Terrarian came to…Terraria…as he destined to slay the Moon Lord and his return to cause chaos). “
Firstly, Gwyn is not a “ Reality Warping God “ who plagued the world, Gwyn is the Lord of Sunlight, and casts Lightning, and second, Gwyn wasn’t the plague of the world, that was the dragons. Gwyn allied himself with the people who obtained the Lord Souls (Nito, the Witches of Izalith and Seath the Scaleless), he then proceeded to end the dragon’s tyranny, he was by no means a good person and mostly sought power in his own interest, but to say he was the plague that started it all is not true. Plus, Gwyn sacrificed his entire being to prolong the flame, he didn’t refuse, he feared the Age of Dark, it scorched him terribly alongside his knights.
Next, Gwyn did not cause the Undead Curse through the First Flame, that exists as its own force of nature, an inevitable fate that applies for all living things, in fact, Gwyn feared the curse, everyone did.
And finally with this connection, it’s a bit debatable to say that the Chosen Undead specifically came to Lordran to slay Gwyn, the title of “ Chosen Undead “ was created by Gwyndolin to get undead to sacrifice themselves to the flame to extend the Age of Fire, because as far as he knew, Gwyn was dead, hence why he has his own tomb in Anor Londo, he never found out that Gwyn had later just become a hollow, it wasn’t until Dark Souls 3 where you can assume Gwyndolin found out, and by then the idea of the “ Chosen Undead “ had faded.
”Long before our combatants’ arrival and during the era of chaos, said god like being is also responsible for a world wide war against a mythical race (Dragons/Dryads) which then caused their extinction, or so it seemed until there was least one survivor to which they aid both our combatants (Everlasting Dragon/The Dryad). “
The Everlasting Dragon is a covenant leader and doesn’t necessarily provide much to the plot of Dark Souls, the only covenant leaders who are important are Kaathe and Gwyndolin. He aids the Chosen Undead by just giving him items for covenant dedication and not throughout any meaningful part of Dark Souls.
And even then it seems strange to say there was at least one survivor when dragons like the Seath the Scaleless, the Gaping Dragon, Crossbreed Priscilla and even the Undead Dragons. The dragons were not a race nearing extinction, the dragons who ruled the world were killed, we also see MANY more dragons throughout the rest of the franchise.
”Surviving the diseased, spreading wastelands in a already harsh world (The Abyss/The Corruption as well as the Crimson) as well as slaying it’s ruler (Manus, the Father of the Abyss/Eater of Worlds for the Corruption or Brain of Cthulhu for the Crimson) “
The Abyss isn’t a disease, it’s essentially its own dimension that preys upon the very idea of humanity, it slowly seeps through, its absolute darkness, and Manus isn’t necessarily the “ Ruler “ of the Abyss. While yes he is called the Father of it, he did not create the Abyss, he was mutated by it and went berserk because of his extremely powerful soul, his twisted humanity morphed into the creature of Dark and even then, Manus was such a mindless beast and only wanted his pendant back, there’s very little reason to believe Manus wanted the spread of the Abyss or cared for Oolacile.
Even then, it’s far more applicable to just say the Four Kings of New Londo were the true rulers of the Abyss, as they directly were the ones fooled by Kaathe who knew far more about the Abyss than Manus ever did.
” Depending whenever the Chosen Undead joins the Blades of the Darkmoon, both killed a masked cult leader (Dark Sun Gwyndolin/Lunatic Cultist) associated with said god like being (Gwyndolin being Gwyn’s “daughter” despite being biologically male/Lunatic Cultist being the leader of an order whose goal is to revive Moon Lord) of a morally dark order to which our combatants destroy after killing said leader (The Blades of the Darkmoon/The Lunar Cult). “
You don’t have to be a Blade of the Darkmoon to “ kill “ Gwyndolin, and even then the Chosen Undead doesn’t canonically kill Gwyndolin as it’s an illusion. Aldrich in DS3 is responsible for killing Gwyndolin, nor does Chosen Undead disband the Darkmoon covenant and Yorshka in DS3 had always kept it alive in secret, even after Sulyvahn and Aldrich started taking over Irythil and Anor Londo.
And even then, if you kill Gwyndolin in DS1, you can still be hunted by other Blades of the Darkmoon from other worlds (aka other players), they strike the sinners of Anor Londo, and are by no means disbanded even after Gwyndolin “ dies. “
”However in truth, the process of completing their journeys were far from noble because while their intentions when it comes to completing their task are considered to be good, they can be morally dark to an extent, especially when a very major part of it comes to a causing a world to universe wide event that causes eternal tragedy via spiritual means and killing an ancient guardian (Chosen Undead’s purpose is to kindle the First Flame to keep the world or universe from eternal darkness with his very own soul after killing Gwyn who was just trying to do what he thinks is best but actually prolongs a cycle of countless sacrifices [which Chosen Undead can refuse to do, thus prolonging the Age of Dark and becoming the Dark Lord but everything would still be suffering regardless] “
The Age of Dark isn’t necessarily the objective bad ending, Aldia, Scholar of the First Sin, the one true immortal understood the unclear path of the Age of Dark, even in DS3 he convinced Prince Lothric (and soon Lorian) to let the fire fade, you could argue that Kaathe is what makes it seem like the Age of Dark is just eternal suffering, but that clearly wasn’t true as shown by the events of DS2 and later 3. Even then, the Age of Dark is commonly thought of as the “ Age of Man “, it’s a fear created by the gods to prevent their legacy from dying.
Even then, DS2 and 3’s philosophy heavily contradict this, letting the fire fade is accepting the unknown, breaking the cycle and creating your own path. Sure in 3 there was the idea of the Age of Dark being a world filled with betrayal, but the only betrayal we see is with the Usurpation of Fire ending where the Ashen One takes the power of the flame for himself, and even then, in the regular Age of Dark ending, the Firekeeper remains by the Ashen One’s side. Either way. The choice you make doesn’t necessarily matter as someday, the First Flame will “ spark little ashes “, and return someday.
And furthermore I don’t know if I can entirely agree with linking the fire being the Chosen Undead’s “ purpose “, it’s always been a lie created by the gods to maintain their power, despite what it may seem, the story of Dark Souls is about choosing for yourself and what you think is right, even when you are told otherwise. It may be the purpose of the title behind the Chosen Undead, but the person behind it? Not so much.
”Due to their position in the flow of fate, they are linked to the cosmic embodiment of the world itself, which also makes them immortal at any cost to fulfill their destiny (Chosen Undead being a Lord of Cinder, being fated to kindle the First Flame to start a new age as well as canonically fusing with the Soul of CindeThe Terrarian being a Champion of Terraria itself and being guided by it throughout the journey as well as canonically being resurrected similar to the Dryads). “
The Dark Sign is what brands the Chosen Undead, not because he’s a “ Lord of Cinder “ (which mind you only comes after he sacrifices himself to fuel the First Flame) and is what causes the Chosen Undead or other undead like the Bearer of the Curse to respawn indefinitely until they go hollow, the Dark Sign comes from the Dark Soul too.
Also, I wouldn’t say that the Chosen Undead “ fused “ into the Soul of Cinder, the Soul of Cinder is an amalgamation of every single person who’s linked the fire, including Gwyn, Chosen Undead and the other Lords of Cinder, it manifested itself from the First Flame and we can assume that’s why he guards it.

Other Minor Nitpicks:

  • Note: These are nitpicks, small corrections, I do not mean to be petty.
  • There is no literal Hell in Dark Souls, more so areas like the Demon Ruins come from the corruption of Izalith.
  • I wouldn’t call Sen’s Fortress a castle, it’s a death trap meant to test the undead to proceed to Anor Londo, Sen’s Fortress is far from the most infamous area in DS1 too, it’s Blighttown or Lost Izalith with that reputation.
  • The Great Hollow being referred to as a “ mushroom biome “ is not entirely true, while yes there are mushroom platforms and mushroom enemies, that’s only really at the very end of the Great Hollow, in fact it’s mostly just a giant tree with many, many branches and filled to the brim with Basilisks.
  • You don’t really obtain the Sunlight Spear or Gwyn’s Greatsword at the Endgame, you get it nearly immediately at NG+ as that’s the only time you can use Gwyn’s soul after beating the game since DS1 automatically begins NG+ after choosing an ending.

Final Thoughts:

  • Let me just say that I’m well aware of the drama revolving around debunks, I understand that, but my intention is more so to give constructive criticism from what I know of Dark Souls instead of being unnecessarily rude towards the matchup itself.
  • I also know that people will sometimes feel disheartened after seeing their matchup on a post like this, and again I will recite that I have nothing against the user who wrote the connection (who I will choose not to name for the sake of privacy), and I do hope my criticism can help improve the matchup someday. Again, please do not just go and tag the creator of this matchup relentlessly or spam this post either.
And that should conclude this extensive look into the Chosen Undead vs The Terrarian’s connections, a small note is that I did not go over every single connection, some are perfectly fine, rather, I picked out the ones I found the most notable.
One last thing, please be respectful in the comments (if there is any), I’d hate for this post to get locked, this isn’t meant to be a super serious post, just criticism with a matchup.

2024.05.09 17:29 Zekrom369 Do I have to beat the final boss again?

Hey, I’ve been meaning to do a NG+ playthrough of this game at some point. It actually became one of my favourite games of all time and got me obsessed with the Persona series in general. I wouldn’t even consider myself an avid RPG player or nothing like that either.
One thing though, I never registered my Personas again before beating the game. Is it required of me to go back into my endgame save and register them and beat the final boss for the most current version of my Personas to be on the NG+ file?

2024.05.04 04:56 Whoopy2000 Starfield's version of NG+ kills my immersion with the game

I just wanna drop my 2cents about the game.
I LOVE space-sim games and I love Bethesda games. So Starfield is, for me despite it's flaws, 2nd favorite Bethesda game after Morrowind.
But NG+ is kinda bad for me. And I'm seeing a lot of praise for it so I just wanted to give some different perspective.
I enjoy NG+ in games. If done well it can be one of the best features in single player games. I played it in Witcher, From Software games, GoW etc.
But FOR ME (I know it's subjective!) Starfields NG+ is a bit immersion breaking... which is funny because it's literally incorporated into the games story.
The reason for it is - I play Starfield like other space-sims + Bethesda style RPG. I'm here for exploration, faction wars, role playing as a space trucker smuggling goods from abandoned stations, making relations with characters etc.
So NG+ in other games is clean slate for me. A new playthrough with new rules, new character, new approach etc. In Starfield tho it's not - It's continuation of your main character and I feel taken out of the experience because lore wise... Nothing that you do matters. You're just jumping through the gate and the world resets. So all relationships, decisions etc. Didn't matter. NG+ is not "new game". It's " be continued " for your main hero.
If you want to start clean slate playthrough but with already gathered equipment you HAVE to start from scratch with mods.
I know, I know - I'm reading WAY to much into it. It's a game. But still, I like to be immersed in my games and Starfield NG+ is kiling that immersion for me. I wish it was done like in other games tbh.

2024.05.03 07:28 Makenshi179 The only thing missing in Dragon's Dogma 2 is a "Hug" feature - Here's my love letter to a game that blew me away and that I fell in love with

J-RPG gamer here and I just wanted to send out this love letter to a game that needs all the praise it can get.
One of the things I appreciate the most in J-RPGs and one of the main reasons why I'm dedicating my life to them, is the "party member spirit". That love and trust shared between party members/companions/brothers in arms/"nakama" who team up for a common goal, trust each other with their life, etc. It's actually my favorite kind of relationship. In DD2 you have "pawns" and while for the longest time the lore seems to say that they have no heart and they just obey, it was just obvious to me that they had a heart. What with all those wholesome and loving lines such as "I could stare at you all day", "Nothing could make me happier than being in your company", "My scars are a testament of the battles fought alongside my comrades and I cherish them all", "Stay with me forever, I wish for nothing more", "Where have you been? I have felt terribly alone while you were away", "If all world conflicts ended, we would lose our reason for fighting and we could just live happily together in this house", etc etc. So what happened in the true ending with the confirmation that your pawn got a will of their own and use it to sacrifice themselves for you, was utterly emotional and was the climax of that core aspect of the game. But not only that cinematic part, I want to stress on the permanent loving vibes and tenderness that accompany you all throughout your journey, creating a comfy and cozy atmosphere, making the player feel good. A comparison that I made once, is that pawns are kind of similar to pokemons in that regard - they love you and you can love them freely without fear, they won't betray you. Just pure, true love. Like a family. And my pawn literally once told me, "I consider this group like a family" and that's my favorite line of the entire game. It's something genius that they crafted here, because it's more than a game - it's a warm embrace and solace.
When it first happened in my game, I went crazy and teared up. It's not a cutscene, it's perfectly animated in-game as you walk toward them. I never saw this in a game before. The high fives, the celebration animations, the victory applauses, the conditional dialog lines during exploration, the way a pawn gives you stamina back, the way a pawn catches you if you fall, and so, so much more... All that is part of the "next-level J-RPG gameplay" that I long for, and that was initiated notably with FF15. In FF15 the party members would comment if you took a wrong road in a dungeon, would have specific lines for certain situations like "I wouldn't say no to a good drink" after coming back from a day of hunting, would come to you to revive you in battle (including guest members who are normally enemies and that made for extremely emotional and memorable moments), etc etc. That was already the start of what I considered "the future of J-RPGs" (gameplay-wise I mean). And DD2 went even farther than FF15, with so many things and dynamic/conditional interactions and lines with your pawns. It's the next step. The evolution. It's here. And I'm the biggest fan of it. When a high five happened for the first time in my game, I said... "GOTY". And DD2 is still my GOTY so far.
I so wish there was a "Hug" feature, a way to hug your pawns, the same way you can grab them. Considering the ambiant love, it's surprising that they didn't implement it, when they implemented SO many things. Well, I guess they have to fit to the lore of the game and how the pawns are perceived. Still, I think they do want us to nurture a relationship with our pawn and grow attached to them (what with all these lines and the true ending), so no matter what people think and how "sappy/cheesy" it could be seen by some people, I think they should add that feature. Your pawn is just so adorable and you can't hug them. You can't even princess-carry them (even at high affinity), while you can do that with NPCs!! And you can't say anything to them in reply to their cute lines, not even a "thank you" or "I love you too". Maybe someone on PC can make a mod to hug your pawns, so we can finally express our love to them. Well, here's me expressing my love to those who made this wonderful game <3
Never in a game have I seen such freedom and amount of things you can do in gameplay (save for MMOs). You can grab and tackle any NPC and I didn't know that at first (and that made me think a quest was bugged, while in fact I had think "outside the box of your average game" and more like, "what would I do in reality", and this game lets you do it and it JUST WORKS), you can gift flowers to any NPC, you can dusplicate items for crazy alternative results and everythings works and was coded like a charm (I've never encountered any bug), you can climb on monsters, you can ride gryphons who take you to another place, NPCs with maxed affinity can literally fight over you if they meet in your home, you can throw stuff... and a million other things you can do that I could write here. I've never seen such a freedom gameplay-wise in a J-RPG. Not even in any AAA game. This is almost MMO-level of gameplay depth/possibilities (you still cannot lean/sit/crouch anywhere you like, there's no gesture emotes, the crafting/transformation system is very barebones, etc). To give an example I've spent 900+ hours in Black Desert Online and 120+ hours in DD2, and I would spend 900 hours in DD2 as well if it had more content. I seriously hope they're gonna add to it with DLCs, I will gladly pay for them, because they made such utterly solid "foundations", that they could use for more content. Like a new story with new maps, but keeping the systems and the assets. The feeling you get when you discover something you can do that you didn't know of before, "Wait I can do this??", is just incredible and not many games have that, I bet. With DD2 you need to re-learn what a game can be, and it feels amazing. This game is a dream.
You recruit pawns that other players made. They help you and guide you with knowledge they have acquired on their own adventures in their master's playthrough. They show you hidden chests and caves. They give you tips on the quests they know of. You can send items to other players. Etc. While none of those concepts is exactly new, I appreciate the asynchronous aspect, it's not like a MMO but it has its own distinct charm. An enhanced solo J-RPG that takes the best of the two worlds. Also, I found myself getting attached to pawns from other players who I recruited, similarly to party members in a J-RPG but here you have so many of them available and you get to choose. I use to keep my pawns for a while and I don't change them too often, so I have fond memories of adventuring and journeying with a lot of them, especially the first ones who I've recruited, and who stayed with me while I had my biggest and most memorable adventures. The first pawn from another player that I recruited feels special, I'll always remember when and where I met her. She was low level like me back then, now she's level 70+ and changed from a kind modest mage in default clothes to a full heavy armor and helmet warlord!! I can hardly recognize her. She said to me "Your face seems familiar... Did we meet before?" so looks like she still remembers me somewhat lol. And another of my cherished previous pawns is now literally level 100 so I can't even recruit her anymore! But yeah, that whole "emotional attachment" there is to recruiting pawns and travelling with them, is quite well done here. Definitely makes for "party members spirit" and a lot of great gaming memories.
So well animated too. Jumping at enemies as a thief and going for the strong attack with dual daggers stabbing downwards, landing that hit from above and performing a backflip after stabbing the enemy, is such an exhilarating feeling. Each battle is a new memory, you won't remember them all, but it's all part of one huge journey that you're living, totally immersed as the character you're playing...
I love camping in J-RPGs and DD2 did it very well. The pawns will say wholesome and emotional lines around the campfire, you can sit by the fire, you can eat the game that you hunted and it will give you buffs... and the eating animation has got to be the most realistic one I've ever seen!! (lol) Seriously though, that idea of including movie clips of real meat was a GREAT idea! It's so unique and I love it! I do wish that you could do more around campfires. Chat with pawns, cuddle them around the fire, decide to sleep with them and snuggle...
As a mixologist, I'm ecstatic that I can both buy AND brew Newt Liqueur myself by steeping a fresh Saurian Tail that I severed myself in Fruit Liqueur. It is too bad that you can't do anything with it aside from completing a side quest, though. I wish it could give you buffs or something. I also wish that I could craft Fruit Liqueur with the many gatherable fruits, but apparently I can't. Also you can buy a round of drinks in any tavern, however... the animation only lasts a few seconds and it doesn't seem to do anything. Which is too bad. I was a bit let down by that.
This game must have the best hand-fishing animations that I've seen. I love it, however, one thing I noticed, is that fish seems to be useless? You can craft it for usables and eat it as is to replenish a bit of HP, but you cannot eat fish at campfires!! That's a disappointment for me. I love the theme of the sea and fishing, and there's an awesome harbor town with a lighthouse and everything, but you can't grill the fish that you caught at campfires. Also small detail, that guy cutting fish at Harve is cutting... the same 3D model of meat. I wish they would have added in a different 3D model for fish meat. But that's nitpicking. Still, with DD2's amazing level of polish, I was surprised that it was lacking in that place!
At first, the game didn't really shine with its storyline. Aside from its initial twists (with you being the Sovran with erased memories from a curse that Regent Disa cast on you), the story was interesting but it was mostly all the rest keeping me addicted. I would have been ok with an "average" storyline because the game was already so good with so many other things. I have other J-RPGs for an amazing story. Then I met the old man by the sea at Harve. The one who has like 10 different set of dialog lines (and a funny scar on his chest...). And he went 4th wall breaking on me, suddenly increasing this game's story potential by 1000. He was aware that the game's world is not the real world, etc. And there's a whole mystery with the "sea". Then the true ending happened and the potential was used and the rest of the iceberg was revealed. Turns out the world was made by the Great Will (the devs), some Watcher is there ensuring the cycle repeats itself at every new game, the Dragon is a tool of destruction needed for rebirth as part of the cycle, you are a tool in that cycle as well and it is only by killing yourself along with the Dragon while saying "screw this, I'm not playing this game/accepting the normal ending" that you uncover the truth and work toward ending the cycle and creating a world with a real sea, and at the other side of the sea is the real world, or "freedom", part of the core concept of the games... Wow. While such twists and depth are still among the average especially in J-RPGs which are known for complex and deep storylines (looking at you 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim) and it's not like DD2 will impress with its storyline in itself... it IS still quite a feat that they did that at the end and planned for it all along. They could have settled for boring dark medieval fantasy politics and it would still have been an amazing game, but no, this game has soul in its story too (even though it's kind of a late bloomer), and it makes for one complete and very satisfying experience with no single weak aspect. Simply put, this game is a masterpiece.
For me, the game's only flaw is that you can't do the true ending without being forced to do NG+. I personally like to be able to come back to free roam after I cleared the game, explore the world, do more stuff, etc, but I can't if I go for the true ending - I will be forced to start a NG+. So I actually only did the normal ending in my game, and I ended up YouTubing the true ending (which resulted in it being, sadly, way less emotional than it would have been if I had seen my own pawn and the characters I helped in my own playthrough). So my experience of the true ending was far from optimal, and was unpersonal, because I had to YouTube it, watching another player's specific ending. For such a memorable and impactful game for me, it's really too bad that I couldn't have the full experience as intended by the devs. It's like my playthrough can't really end, or is stuck at the normal ending. It leaves an unfinished taste... It's the only flaw or negative thing I can think of about the game. I would give it a 10/10 if it didn't have that. I guess now it's a 9.5/10 from me. With lots of special mentions.
Overall this game hit me in a lot of my soft spots and I've even been daydreaming AMVs (GMVs?) featuring my character and the pawns I've recruited, while listening to music. That's how much I'm into it. I didn't talk about the OST in this review, it's good especially the epic progression of the battle themes (and that victory theme is so addictive!) but it's not the strongest aspect of the game for me.
Thank you for reading and I hope others enjoyed this game as much as I did. I cannot say it enough... I love this game!! Thank you to everyone who worked on it, for your feelings and for the heart that you've put in it.

Tentative Emerald Beyond NG+ and Battle Rank Outline, Guide, and Discussion
As many are noticing, Emerald Beyond allows and defaults to a level of NG+ Carry Over that is atypical of the franchise, with features available on the first NG+ that formerly required beating all four campaigns in SSG. Below are my thoughts based on me experience and testing (onto my 4th campaign, and 3 false starts to verify how things work).
I'm usually not a fan of NG+ in RPGs, and I liked the mechanics that were present in the original Minstrel Song or Scarlet Grace Ambitions. I tend to like early game SaGa with growth and glimmers, and I dislike being pushed towards using same party members. I like it when my party and load outs are rapidly developing. Everybody has their own interests in what makes for a good replay of an RPG, and the SaGa team has accounted for that with relatively granular control over the experience.

The game is using the system save to track the "highest value" you've ever had for character stats, techs, ranks, roles, etc., so you no longer have to worry about making a master save fil. This is a huge improvement that opens up a lot of freedom on a run-by-run basis rather than having to plot out way in advance.
Now that people are finishing their first runs, people are contending with the new NG+ list. A lot of intuition about what to expect from Emerald Beyond in NG+ ends up being wrong due to the elaborate changes to how Battle Rank work. Battle Rank is more granular and dynamic, with some absolutely key differences from how it has worked in the past.
  • Battle Rank increases faster when you performing well. "fewer people falling" is stated, but there may be more.
  • Battle Rank increases faster when you are "more powerful".
  • Your stats can increase more per battle. This is vague, but look at them stat growths in the attached images. A brutal fight late Siugnas, or literally the first Easy fight of a B&F run that carried over BR, has greatly increased growths, including +3 to multiple stats in a single fight.
  • Battle Rank is more gradual (not 1:1 with skill levels as it was in SSG). This means that it may be incrementing in distinct chunks based on performance rather than accruing some hidden meter like it has in previous SaGa games.
  • I strongly suspect that a bunch of limits on how fast or how high it grows are loosened for NG+, or based on how high Battle Rank got in previous runs.
Carry Over for NG+ has many of the same features that we've seen before, but with different recommendations. It recommends carrying over inventory and skill ranks and HP while leaving Battle Rank not carried over. The worry is that this will make your party too powerful and just steamroll things. But if you carry over Battle Rank, you might be in a position where your party is too weak at the start. Isn't that a problem?
The answer to all of this is that most of these nuances just kind of wash out due to new dynamic aspects of Battle Rank. If you're carrying stuff over, you're going to have some combination of "being more powerful" and doing well in battle, so Battle Rank is going to rise faster to match.
The reason why it is recommended to NOT carry over Battle Rank is the major trap of doing Battle Rank but not having the same party members, which could lead to a bricked state. Even with reliable access to easy fights, a new party with good gear might not be able to win any battles against a Battle Rank that has been growing for 40 issues. This is exacerbated by a bug:
Part of the text says you will start stronger when BR carry over is enabled, which you can even see on NG. When a character joins your party, they are scaled up based on BR. My rudimentary testing (three times) seems like the stat increases just do not apply to characters that join your party before you have access to the menu for the first time, or something like that? All of the protagonists will NOT trigger the increased starting stats due to a higher Battle Rank, unless you both had them in a previous run and have chosen to carry over stats. So you're supposed to get a running start for your protagonists and core team that does not exist, like Bonnie and Formina may be 100% unable to beat their very first encounter, but if you succeed you will get the cats that have hundreds more HP because they are properly scaling to your previous max BR. B&F will have 100 HP and level 3 skills, while their cats will have hundreds of HP, and maybe 15-20 skill levels.
Following screenshots were with BR Carry ON and all other OFF. Low-powered Formina is gaining x3 stats off of the first Easy encounter and then getting a 300 HP Cat.

This and other problems could be alleviated if you could choose which previous Battle Rank to use, but, no, if you carry over BR it will use the highest you had ever reached in a previous campign.
Also new to Emerald Beyond is that the game is meant to be played in NG+. Like, subsequent playthroughs have substantially new content, including plot continuation, and likely different final boss forms and extremely like True Final Boss that is yet to be found. However, we have no idea whether there are any challenges that do not scale with Battle Rank. To date, everything I've seen looks like it will be Battle Rank appropriate.
CONCLUSION:
  • A whole ton of relevant history and campaign/quest progression is stored in the hidden system save file, which you have no access to. Any runs you do are inherently going to be NG+ in ways not yet documented.
  • Dynamic Battle Rank is a suitable replacement for the proper Hard mode that was in SSG. Yes, it does a good job of remaining interesting and challenging, and will make repeat playthroughs extremely satisfying.
  • Always select to carry over Trade and Trial Rank. These are multi-campaign mechanics like stuff scene in SSG or Minstrel Song, and the power boost that they offer is fine.
  • When you bring power-level stuff over, your increased power level and performance is going to make NG+ catch up... eventually.
  • Anything works in terms of power-level carry over. You do you. I like the early/mid-game of SSG and this more than late game, so I go lite.
  • Be careful with Battle Rank carry over. I recommend turning it on only when you are continuing with a protagonist you have already beaten before.
  • Due to the system save and Highest Value stuff, you don't need to worry about building up a super save file. Stuff is going to be there waiting for your next run even if you don't activate it for carry over in this run.
  • Carry Over across protagonists is awkward because you might not even end up recruiting the same characters, and are in fact, unlikely. There's no Lute/Rogue/Hawke that is easy to find in each campaign early on. This makes Inventory the most generally useful and powerful of that set of Carry Overs.
Thoughts on each campaign:
  • Mido: This makes the most sense to do a full carry over, including Battle Rank if you've already cleared a version of his scenario at least once. Souls are also of value to bring over, especially if you are going heavy with the puppets.
  • Diva: This is a full-length campaign that can be pretty hard near the end. She gets mechs, and mechs benefit more inventory carry over and relatively less from the stat/tech carry over.
  • Bonnie and Formina: Her trio of cats joining you as Kaiju-level monsters after your first encounter makes this a lot more realistic to do with Battle Rank carry over, but you may need to luck your way through their First easy encounter (via Formina showstoppers?) and their third encounter (Hard) before it stabilizes.
  • Siugnas: Knight status does not carry over. Becoming a Knight disables the ability to use Custom Techs in that specific playthrough, but the character will have access of them when you continue into NG+ with them.
  • Ameya: Magic can be irritating to relearn, but her party is pretty well balanced. Nobody is quite clear on her meta-structure yet. Cat gear does not seem to carry over into Ameya subsequent Ameya runs.
The game needs a lot of patches for the UI stuff, but better Battle Rank options would be appreciated, too.

2024.05.02 18:01 hideandgozeke Question for Beta players - for adjusting traits/appearance in NG+, are you also able to change the character background as well?

Played around 500 hours I think before stepping away for a bit. This update will definitely be bringing me back as I am now super excited to go NG+ again and truly re-do the game with a "new" character without having to start from the beginning with skill point accumulation. Icing on the cake would be the ability to change the character background as well (it's an RPG after all), but I haven't seen anything on this -- can anyone confirm?

2024.04.30 23:39 Funtime_YT237 Need some advice for an upcoming Challenge run

I'm wanting to do a Challenge run where I can only use weapons that are from RE2R, which means that I can only use The Matilda, Shotgun, Marvin's Knife, Heavy Grenades, Flash Grenades and even if the model is different I'm allowing the RPG. This means that I will only have the Shotgun until halfway through the Castle, I plan to do this on NG Pro so any advice on what I could do would be great.

2024.04.28 20:11 FunnyMathematician77 Just beat P5R for the first time

Being a huge smash bros. fan, I was really interested in Persona 5 when Joker was announced. The music and art style was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. A JRPG mixed with Acid Jazz and pop art colors red on black, it looked like a manga come to life. The music, art style and voice acting are a perfect 10. I listen to the OST pretty much every day now, it is that good.
Note: I played the game on Nintendo Switch on Normal mode.
My experience with JRPGs up until now had been your typical Square Enix game. So I thought I knew what to expect going in. Boy was I wrong.
While I wouldn't exactly characterize P5R as a "complex" game in terms of typical RPG mechanics (I think FF7 materia slots would be more complex, for example), the breadth and scope of the game is very large. There are always places to go, things to do, and people to meet.
The story is phenomenal, one that I will never forget. Just about every character in the game has a very compelling story. The game focuses on dark, but very relatable topics. The story is a critique on modern society, and how many of us feel helpless in a life controlled by power craven lunatics (sound familiar?). It is a story about not giving up, or losing hope, even in the face of impossible odds. It's about finding strength through friends, and relationships. It's about coming together to be greater than the sum of our parts. It's an allegory of how, individually, we are all stupified by greed, blinded by lust for power, and how, collectively, we can overcome it.
The time system was something that was also new to me. I was used to typical RPGs with day/night cycle. But having to choose which activities to partake, given the limited time made for an interesting optimization puzzle. I wasn't able to get all confidantes to max level, but I enjoyed the challenge of optimizing my time, planning what to do, and when to do it. It also made relationships more fulfilling because I was prioritizing who to spend time with. It was my decision.
This game is full of decisions. Minor one liners to choose from, which reveal hidden dialogue and cutscenes, to massive game altering decisions. I somehow managed to get the "True Ending", minus Akechi fucking dying ;-; but when it came time to make these decisions, I nearly caved every time to make a deal that sounded good in theory, but would have massively backfired. I very nearly ratted out my team because I thought I could trust Sae Niijima. Luckily I didn't! And when Akechi fucking shot me in the head, I thought I had got the bad ending! My mind raced trying to figure out where I went wrong, until Ryuji's little smirk let me know there was something else going on. Even though I was expecting multiple M. Night Shamalan twists, every time the story did take a turn, I felt my stomach drop, as though I were on a roller coaster of emotions.
Which brings me to Akechi. Initially I hated him, I thought his character was just so extremely bland. But the character development he goes through completely reversed my opinions on him. IMO he was the most interesting character, by far, and fun as hell to play as.
That being said, there some things that irked me about the game. I played on Normal mode, but I found the game to be woefully unbalanced, or maybe that's just how Persona games go? I would run into a Shadow that would just completely decimate me, or was trivial to beat. I was either getting one shotted, or I was just kicking ass (with a few exceptions). Again, I've never played a JRPG like this before, so this might just be my bias. On the plus side, I never felt like I had to grind, and by the late game I was so overleveled that most fights were just easy (I could have bumped the difficulty, but I figured I'd save that for NG+).
Another thing that I didn't like was the Velvet Room. It was just so overwhelming and seemed completely unnecessary (especially with DLC Personas, which are ridiculously strong). That said, I think this was probably one of the most complex aspects of the game. Fusing Personas, leveling them up, figuring out which abilities to keep was a bit of a challenge, especially on a first play through (while using NO guides). I'm not going to lie, I felt overwhelmed, so I largely just ignored the Velvet Room.
I also didn't care for some of the dungeon layouts. Some of them got old after a while, and I felt like getting through them was just work, when what I really wanted was to get to the dialogue and story.
And lastly, for some hot takes.
Overall I give this game 9.5 "for real!?"s out of 10. It's almost scary how good this game is.
