Christian Mingle (2014),of course this is on Tubi.
Busy ad executive Gwyneth Hayden (Lacey Chabert) has been unsuccessful in love. After a friend's recent engagement leaves her as the only single woman in her group, she sees a television advertisement for the dating website Christian Mingle and decides to sign up. She confesses to her co-worker Pam that she hasn't been to church in years despite having been raised Christian, and before going on a date with Paul, she buys The Bible for Dummies and Christianity for Dummies. After a couple of successful dates, Paul takes Gwyneth to a Bible study group at his friend's house. She meets Jessy and Jimmy, a couple who also met through the site, Gabby and Tommy, who are expecting their first child, and Kelly, a childhood friend of Paul's. Paul asks Gwyneth to go to church and meet his parents, Lacie (Morgan Fairchild) and Bill (David Keith for some reason). After Gwyneth meets with Jessy, Jimmy, Gabby, Tommy and Kelly, Paul reveals that he will be travelling to Mexico with his father's construction company to repair a church in Mexico. Gwyneth is annoyed that she wasn't told but is persuaded to join everyone in Mexico. She takes time off from her job but while there her copy of Christianity for Dummies is discovered and she confesses to Paul that she wasn't a practicing Christian when she signed up to the site. They break up and she returns to America. When Paul and his family returns Gwyneth goes to see him and learns that he is with Kelly. Her boss, Douglas McCarver (Stephen Tobolowsky), has Gwyneth write a campaign to sell a cure for baldness for their client Donny Da Bona (John O’Hurley) but she cannot lie due to her newly discovered faith and quits to go become a teacher at the village in Mexico. Some months later, Paul returns to the village to tell Gwyneth that he has broken up with Kelly, and he and Gwyneth happily reunite. Gwyneth then, hand in hand with Paul, introduces him to her students. Paul proposes to Gwyneth during the end credits. Writed and Directed by legendary Siskel and Ebert nemesis Corbin Bernsen who plays a bike shop kid in the movie.

2024.06.09 03:28 1ch1p1 What was considered "golden" during John W. Campbell's Golden age?

Astounding used to do polls of the fans' favorite stories from every issues, so I thought it would be interesting to look up all the #1 stories. I used July 1939, the issue where The Black Destroyer was the cover story, as my starting point, because that's usually cited as a seminal issue. Since Campbell's preoccupation with Dianetics and other psuedo-science is blamed for ending his greatest period, I made the issue where the original Dianetics essay was published the end of my survey. I should be noted that this isn't a complete representation of Campbell's editorial work during that era. He edited the fantasy magazine Unknown from 1939-1943, featuring alot of the same writers who contributed to Astounding, but as far as I can see, there are no polls in Unknown.

2024.06.09 02:58 MaleficentWear8398 I left America as a Trump conservative AMA(?)

I've read a lot of comments here that hate on Trump, pretty typical of Reddit mind you, and I'd like to say this post is for sharing my experience only. I don't care why you want to leave the US, if anything Trump haters leaving the US would make me more willing to move back. So, please leave, just don't come to where I'm living.
Now, about 1 year ago I moved to Japan on a study abroad with the intention of using that as a launchpad into getting a full residence work permit in Japan for a highly paying (by Japanese standards, anyway) international company. I succeeded in that endeavor as soon as I finished my study abroad, which I didn't realize was statistically exceedingly rare for someone in my situation, but it has worked for the best for me all the same.
The most difficult part for me was switching from my student status to a work permit, which involved going back for graduation from university to move the things I couldn't bring with me on my first semi-temporary move such as my giant PC, TV and sound set into my checked luggage (all of which survived ANA by the way, highly recommend that airline). After that, I had to come back to Japan on a re-entry permission, go to immigration and pick up my new residence card which wasn't possible until my undergraduate degree was officially "conferred" upon me. So I waited around until I was able to do that and successfully picked up my new residence card which activated my new visa status.
In all of this time back home I rented a storage place a block from my house pre-paid for two years for about $1250 and applied for my pistol and semi-automatic rifle permits in New York before I left. The fact that I was claiming to be a "part-time resident" definitely sussed them out, but they allowed the application because I told them if I ever move back full-time I don't want to be waiting around to take possession of my firearms in NY again. Ideally, if I were to move back at all I'd go to Arizona or someplace to own NFA guns instead, but the permit was useful regardless since I visit family there at least once annually now.
Life in Japan has been great, I got to know all of the top government, NPO, business owners and foreign lawyers in Tokyo; my home in based in Tokyo so I get to benefit from JR and Tokyo Metro's extensive railway system, work even pays for my commuter pass (I live intentionally far away from the office which extends its use case and pays for my bus commute to the station which in turn gives me access to the whole bus line) and I live not too far away from Tokyo DisneyLand being on the eastern side of Tokyo.
Everything here is still fairly cheap, I do need to buy a bike and I'm still working on converting my NYS driver's license over to a Japanese license, but I've been able to use my IDP once while I was moving my belongings over to my new apartment across Tokyo. My social life has also been fairly healthy compared to most new expats, dating is a little rough but other than that there is no lack of friends.\
So why did I leave? I had credible-enough threats of violence waged against me back home, and I didn't even recognize the place in which I've grown up in these past twenty plus years. Additionally, I like Asian culture and living in a country where I'm the minority has definitely made me the protagonist in my own little life's story, that isn't me being facetious either, so much good has happened from this move. I still do occasionally help with US-related things. I work with American commerce abroad, I visit the US military bases on special occasions in which my SOFA status friends invite me over and I volunteer for some US charities here in Japan.
Some tricky things that have arisen are the following:
-I run a business in Japan and hold multiple bank accounts worldwide including HK which has caused for a cluster fuck of a tax situation with the IRS. Unless, of course, I want to get my U.S. Passport revoked and be de facto stateless abroad (technically an Italian citizen by descent too but that process is taking forever) I have to put up with this shit.
-Renewals of my NY pistol permit aren't friendly to majority-year non-resident citizens. I lived downstate which results in me not having to just recertify with the state every 5 years for a "lifetime" license, but do a full renewal every 3 years with the local PD. This is pretty simple with a VPN and a credit card by just paying online, but I cannot upgrade to full concealed carry yet until the state rids of the training requirement or clarifies that it is only required to be done once, something neither the state nor the courts have yet done. I'm in no hurry because with the sensitive locations clause, every CCW is effectively just a glorified premises permit.
-Renewal of DL not an issue when renewing online with a credit card again, but every 15 or 20 years I need to submit a new photograph to the DMV and every 8 years since its a REAL ID I need to get my vision checked in NY.
-I apply for a lot of credit cards (over 20 at this point) to churn their SUBs which help fund me flying ANA and JAL in first and business class between JFK and HND. Sometimes, these issuers (aside from Amex) after uncooperative with me having a overseas address which means I need to phone up my parents to receive the card for me and for me to figure out how I am to use it contactlessly so I can meet minimum spend and get my next free flight home.
-I always have to say "I intend to return" on UOCAVA application forms, otherwise I can only vote in federal elections. I still voted in my local school board/budget elections when I last visited so I could write in all of the candidates and vote no on all of the budget proposals. Why would I want to give that up when I can legally say I "returned" so therefore had an intention to at some point in the course of human history? :>
-The biggest issue: my family is getting older and it's not too unlikely that my grandparents could die and I would not necessarily be able to take the time off to visit their funerals. Hopefully, this doesn't happen for quite some time.
Would I move back?
Well, no, not permanently. After I get permanent residency here I may see if I can't go work in the Midwest while on a re-entry permit for a while or look to Hong Kong/Singapore/Shenzhen/Shanghai to expand my cross-cultural lifestyle, but I have no urge to return to the US. Something people who never leave the US will say a lot is the US is the freest, greatest country in the world. I can't agree that it is the freest, but I can agree it is the greatest in the sense I can't go anywhere besides perhaps Russia, China or Afghanistan and other obscure countries to get away from the US' economic pull. Every time I go to open a bank account, brokerage account or make a big purchase or sale the US tax authorities always get involved somehow. We can seriously thank Obama for that one.
And lastly, would I ever renounce my US citizenship?
No, never. Not officially at least. If I happened to become de facto stateless as a political dissident or for tax reasons, etc. I still wouldn't give it up for Japanese nationality because Japanese nationality would cause me to lose Italian/EU nationality as well and my children could never benefit from all that comes with no immigration controls in the US for school and work in the future. If I ever needed to yeet out of Japan in the event of a national emergency like the Fukushima disaster, I would lose that ability immediately. And I would lose my US voting rights. Lastly, renunciation results in a disqualification to ever own a firearm in the US again, not sure how constitutional that remains to be.
I've heard of stories in which some Americans left for Japan, naturalized as Japanese citizens and somehow found their way back in the USA later in life as non-citizens. I know how shit the US legal immigration system is and I never want to voluntarily put myself through that where it is avoidable. The Japanese immigration system while strict and murky in some ways, is pretty understanding of individual circumstances by comparison.

This set is slowly becoming my favorite. For the price point I haven’t been truly disappointed with the three boxes I have picked up. Auto wasn’t the best but the case city variant pack, Jackie Robinson image variant and Griffey /150 made up for it.

2024.06.09 00:32 Polilla_Negra New Alex Murdaugh-related lawsuit may confirm shocking allegations in Mallory Beach case

A new Alex Murdaugh-related lawsuit may confirm shocking allegations uncovered during the Mallory Beach wrongful death and civil outrage cases.
A private investigating firm that says it was hired to uncover inside information on the family of former Hampton attorney Alex Murdaugh and influence the outcome of a pending wrongful death lawsuit involving the Murdaughs has filed a revealing civil suit in Charleston this week that may impact other lawsuits filed in 2019 and 2021.
When Allendale, S.C., attorney Mark Tinsley filed a 2019 wrongful death suit following the now infamous February boating accident that took the life of 19-year-old Beach in Beaufort County waters, he knew his opponents would put up stiff resistance — but he soon suspected something possibly not ethical or legal was happening behind the scenes.
The wrongful death suit, which named now notorious convicted murderer and fraudster Alex Murdaugh, who owned the boat allegedly driven by his son, Paul; as well as Gregory Parker and his Parkers Corporation, who sold the alcohol to the drunken underaged boaters, has since been partially settled for $15 million, but during the course of fighting that legal battle a second, parallel "civil outrage" personal injury suit was ignited.
In that December 2021 suit, Tinsley, on behalf of grieving mother Renee Beach, alleges that the Parkers defendants and their attorneys hired private detectives to mount an undercover campaign to both harass and inflict emotional distress on his clients and sway public opinion in the case. Over the past two and a half years, Tinsley has been filing subpoena after subpoena in an effort to obtain documents supporting his allegations.
The detective's new, related lawsuit, filed May 21 in Charleston County Court of Common Pleas by detective agency Inquiry Agency, LLC against law firm BakerHostetler, LLP and its partner Jason D’Cruz, is a simple breach of contract lawsuit over allegedly unpaid work and legal fees totaling less than $75,000, but it may hold far-reaching implications for Tinsley and the Beach family.
The May 21 civil complaint alleges that Inquiry was hired by D'Cruz and BakerHostetler, LLP and its partner Jason D’Cruz to mount "a shadow campaign used to sway public opinion" in the Beach wrongful death case — allegations which certainly seem to support claims that Tinsley and his Beach clients have been making for more than three years.
"This case exposes years of lies that Parker and his lawyers have been spinning in the conspiracy case to keep me from getting the documents," Tinsley told The Hampton County Guardian/Greenville News. "The revelations contained in this lawsuit are very much contrary to the position taken by the defendants and their lawyers for going on three years. A surreptitious smear campaign is not a part of how litigation is supposed to be conducted."
This new complaint alleges: "On or about February 8, 2021, BakerHostetler, LLP... entered into a contract with Inquiry Agency to investigate Paul Murdaugh and his family in an effort to gain information to be used in a public relations campaign to sway public opinion in favor of Greg Parker and Parkers Kitchens who was being sued for the wrongful death of Mallory Beach."
The complaint adds that when Tinsley became aware of what Parker and BakerHostetler were doing, Inquiry Agency was served with subpoenas from Tinsley and Gooding and Gooding, P.A. for its "entire investigative file," claiming that these documents were not subject to attorney-client privilege and should be released.
As a result of the subpoenas, and the fact that Parker's attorneys allegedly instructed Inquiry Agency not to comply but fight the release of the documents in court, Inquiry has incurred thousands of dollars in legal expenses and its own time, and is demanding to be paid.
On May 23, Renee Beach shared a portion of the Inquiry lawsuit on her social media accounts, commenting, "For years Parker and his lawyers have tried to keep what they did hidden, and now the PI (private investigator) is telling the truth!"
Representatives for Parker and Parker's Corporation declined to comment on the new lawsuit Thursday.
The Beach civil outrage case remains pending in Hampton County Court of Common Pleas, but no trial date has been set as the parties are still engaged in legal arguments over whether the detective files and other documents are protected by attorney-client privilege, or can be released to Tinsley.
S.C. Circuit Judge G.D. Morgan Jr. is now presiding over the case.

ALBANY — The state Legislature has authorized the creation of an authority that could take over the sale of The College of Saint Rose campus.
The Senate passed the act Tuesday and the Assembly passed it later Friday.
Connect and Discover Sale: 25¢.
ACT NOW The Albany County Pine Hills Land Authority could issue up to $80 million in bonds to acquire the former college campus and then maintain it while developing a plan for its uses.

ADVERTISEMENTSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT “The preservation and safeguarding of facilities at risk of being underutilized and becoming blighted is a matter of vital importance,” the sponsors wrote in the bill.
It will require coordinated operation to ensure the Pine Hills neighborhood does not wind up with dozens of vacant or underused buildings, the bill said.
The campus includes about 90 buildings in along Western and Madison avenues in the heart of Albany. Saint Rose had once operated with 22 buildings there. But from 1999 to 2015, the college trustees tripled the size of the campus, purchasing nearly every building in an effort to create an urban campus.
It was expensive: The college spent more than $12 million to buy the properties and $100 million to renovate and build new facilities on that land. Before that work was completed, in 2014 the college reported on its IRS forms that it was operating at a loss. From that point, there were only two years in which the college was in the black as it struggled to pay back more than $48 million in debt while enrollment rapidly declined.

On Nov. 30, the trustees voted to close it at the end of the school year.
That led to immediate crises for students and employees. But now that the school’s work is winding down, officials are focusing on the long-term problem: what to do when several blocks in the middle of the city are vacant this summer.
The bill suggests that parts of the campus that would be hard to reuse — such as the Massry Center for the Arts performing hall — should be kept as they are now.
“The economic well-being of the county and the general welfare of its people require adequate and accessible performing arts centers, athletic fields, educational facilities and residential facilities,” the sponsors wrote in the bill.

The goal of the authority would be to “stimulate and promote a health economy” through developing a plan to reuse the buildings.
The authority would be made up of seven appointed members: four chosen by the Albany County executive, two by the Albany County Legislature’s chair and one by the Albany mayor.
The authority would repay the bond from revenue related to selling or reusing the buildings.

It’s not clear how much the college owes and would need to sell its properties but it refinanced $48 million in debt in 2021. As collateral it used much of the campus, which was assessed at $78 million at the time.

2024.06.08 11:20 MathieuLoutre More people should know about Trinity grades as a learning tool

Trinity College has Rock & Pop music grades for bass which is a helpful tool to rate yourself as a bassist, particularly if you're self-taught. They're quite popular in the UK but maybe not so much in other countries and I thought I'd bring them to attention as they've been quite helpful for me as a reference point and progress tracker.
There are 8 grades (9 if you count "initial") that take you from absolute beginner to advanced (grade 8 is a requirement for a degree course/conservatoire). For each grade, there's a list of songs of that difficulty and to pass that grade, you have to be able to play 3 of these songs (including one "technical focus" one) from start to finish, back to back without stopping or restarting. The transcriptions are sometimes simplified for early grades (or some parts of the song are skipped) but they get more note to note accurate as you go.
If you're struggling to identify where you are / what you need to work on, it's a handy tool to gauge where you are at in your learning journey. You don't have to pass the exams or buy the books (but they come with practice tracks which you can find on Youtube) to rate yourself. I'm not affiliated in any way with Trinity (except that I've recently passed my Digital Grade 4) and there are other exams you can use as reference like Rockschool.
The full syllabus is here which includes what techniques are included/expected in each grade: https://www.trinitycollege.com/resource/?id=7897
They also have Spotify playlist of the songs: https://open.spotify.com/use4rvsnjm0exwg073v5f5ljfk7t But here's a full list per grade including extra songs (TF means technical focus)
